5 Unique Places You Need To Visit In Xilitla, Mexico

  • Himanshi Shah
  • Published: August 8, 2022
  • Updated: August 8, 2022

Xilitla ( pronounced hee-lit-laa ) is a small pueblo magico in Mexico located in the Huasteca Potosina region of San Luis Potosi. The town gets its name from the Nahuatl word  zilliy which can be loosely translated as  “a place of snails”  or  “a place of shrimps” .

The town is known for its dense greenery, the aroma of fresh coffee, rainy skies, clear waterfalls and rivers that form tiny pools for a refreshing dip. Xilitla has largely remained untouched by modern industries, and this only adds to its old-world charm.

Besides walking in the main square and eating cheesy enchiladas potosina , there are five unique places you must visit during your trip to Xilitla, Mexico.

1. Las Pozas – Xilitla Mexico

Tourists mainly visit Xilitla, Mexico to experience the magic of Las Pozas – a surrealist garden hidden in the subtropical rainforest of Sierra Gorda mountains.

Sir Edward James and His Inspiration

Born out of the vivid imagination of surrealistic Edward James, Las Pozas sits at 2000 feet above sea level and are spread across 80 acres. This hidden gem is one of the absolute must see places in all of Mexico.

While creating Las Pozas, Edward James drew inspiration from the surrounding jungles of the Huasteca region. He fused these motifs with his lifelong passion for the surrealist movement and his love for orchids. With these creative ideas, Edward James designed a garden unlike any other. What he liked to call his own version of the garden of Eden.

Edward James’ Garden of Eden

The garden feels like a sleeping concrete creature inspired by cathedrals, with intertwining plants and winding staircases that lead to nowhere – all while being surrounded by waterfalls and pools.

Several trails leading toward the main structure are made of steps, bridges, and walkways. The entire route is peppered with symbolic elements like a pool designed like the human eye, and snakes made out of colourful mosaics.

Travel blogger Himanshi Shah walking in the steps of a structure in Las Pozas, Xilitla México

The foundation for Las Pozas was laid in 1962 and was constructed for two decades until the death of Edward James. That’s why some pieces look unfinished, but this only adds to the appeal of this surrealist garden.

Previously, visitors could pay for the entrance to explore the garden and bathe in the pool at leisure. This changed and direct access to many structures is now off-limit due to tourists destroying them in the past.

  • Tickets to wander the garden in a group tour can be purchased online or at the town centre in Xilitla
  • It costs 125 pesos for the ticket + 25 pesos for a mandatory tour guide
  • Arrive 5-10mins before the time slot you picked while purchasing the ticket. You may be denied entry if you’re late
  • Each tour lasts one hour and 30mins
  • Tours are available in English & Spanish
  • You have the option of booking a private tour. Email  [email protected]  for the prices and availability
  • Bring drinking water or beverages for the tour as the garden tends to be hot most of the year

2. Posada El Castillo Xilitla

📍 Xilitla 💴 From $75 USD per night ($1570 pesos) Check Availablity 🧳 For Solo Travelers, Couples, and History Lovers 🤝 Check-in: 02:00 PM 👋 Check-out: 12:00 PM 📱 Contact: +52-489-1135-858 | www.elcastilloxilitla.com  🛎 Amenities: Free breakfast + Toiletries + Game Room

Locals often refer to Las Pozas as Edward James’s Castle, but the real gothic castle of Xilitla is Posada El Castillo. The former Gastelum house that Edward James called home during his time in Xilitla.

tours a xilitla

Edward James met Plutarco Gastelum in Cuernavaca in the early 1940’s. Gastelum served as Edward’s guide in his quest for the perfect region to build his surreal garden.

During their search, they found themselves in Xilitla. Plutarco soon got married and had four kids, for whom he built a mock gothic castle home, which now runs as a hotel called La Posada El Castillo.

Edward James was close to the Gastelum family and the kids fondly referred to him as Uncle Edward. He spent many days staying at the house as a family member. In fact, the bedroom he stayed in — now known as Don Eduardo Room — is now a room in the hotel that is so popular it is constantly booked out.

Family Home Turned Into Hotel

Plutarco Gastelum’s granddaughter Luisa and her family currently run the hotel.

“Many people think Edward James built this hotel, but it was actually all my grandfather’s work,” says Luisa beaming with pride.

This boutique hotel has unmistakable surrealistic inspirations in its design and decor. There are just eight rooms on the property, each decorated uniquely with art and antiques.

I had the pleasure of spending last New Year’s Eve in the Don Eduardo room, the one that Edward James stayed in during his time at the Gastelum home.

Posada El Castillo’s beautifully distinctive architecture includes a watchtower on the topmost floor. The views from this tower are breathtaking, and on a clear sunny day, you can see the Siera Gorda Mountains of San Luis Potosi.

As a guest at El Castillo, your mornings will start with a warm breakfast of your choice, with juice, sweet bread and bottomless coffee. On days when you don’t feel like getting out, you can spend time playing foosball in the game room or relaxing on the swing. And if you’re a good human, the hotel’s resident cat might just let you sneak in a cuddle.

While it’s definitely not the cheapest option, Posada El Castillo is the best guesthouse in the area abundant with historical significance.

But, if you’re staying somewhere else, you have the option to tour this landmark hotel. Tickets to the tour cost $100 pesos per person and take place every day at 1 pm and 7 pm. Each tour lasts about 40mins. Call or Whatsapp +52-489-1135-858 to book one.

3. Museo Leonora Carrington

Carrying forward the theme of surrealism in Xilitla is Leonora Carrington’s art gallery, located near the centre of the town. Haunting bronze sculptures of otherworldly entities will welcome you as soon as you walk into the gallery.

These strikingly beings that look like they came straight out of an artistic horror film are signature masterpieces created by Leonora. Besides the sculptures, the museum also houses one-of-a-kind lithographs and drawings created by the surrealism master.

Leonora Carrington Museum in Xilitla, Mexico

WHO WAS LEONORA CARRINGTON?

England-born Leonora Carrington had artistic tendencies from an extremely young age. She had a deep passion for self-expression through art and chose the surrealistic style to give her imagination a tangible form.

tours a xilitla

She had turbulent adulthood that involved fleeing the Nazis and a short stint in a psychiatric hospital. These experiences left a mark on all her future art pieces — as Leonora describes in her book .

Further complications in her personal life led her to move to Mexico in the 1940s.

By then, her fellow surrealist artists had already laid a foundation for the art movement in the country. Her connections with these artists opened doors to countless opportunities and exhibits for Leonora.

If magical realism and alchemy are some of your interests, the museum is a must-visit during your trip to Xilitla, Mexico! The art gallery will give you a peek into Leonora’s vivid mind.

4. Sótano de las Golondrinas ( Basement of the Swallows )

About an hour’s drive away from the centre of Xiltila is the town of Aquismón. There lies an enormous 512 meters deep and 60 meters wide open-pit cave. This Basement of the Swallows is among the largest caves in the world.

To experience this natural wonder, you need to be in good shape and be able to climb up and down the 1500 steps, starting from the entrance to the basement.

Thousands of birds live in the limestone walls of the cave. Each morning at sunrise, these birds leave their nests in a flock in pursuit of food. After a full day of searching, they head back homeward at sunset. Both these sights are worth seeing for all bird lovers.

Keep an eye for parakeets, and white-collared swifts, and If you’re lucky, you will spot swallows. Because despite what the name suggests, swallows are rare to see here.

For all adrenaline junkies, you have an exciting option of rappelling down the cave for 8000-12000 pesos (568 USD).

Even though the cave is technically outside Xilitla, it’s worth witnessing the glorious flight of the birds if you’re in the Huasteca region.

How To Reach The Cave Of the Swallows

To get to the Basement of the Swallows from Xilitla, you can either drive yourself, hire a taxi or group book a tour. You can find these tours at your hotel’s front desk or the city centre’s tourist kiosks.

  • Entrance tickets are priced at 100 pesos
  • The entrance opens at 6 am, so arrive by 6:30 so you don’t miss the birds’ flight
  • Remain quiet to not scare off the birds
  • The best month to see thousands of birds is in August
  • During the months when birds are nesting, the number of them flying out will be noticeably low
  • If it’s cloudy or rainy, the birds won’t fly out
  • Bring a blanket to sit on while you wait for the birds as the rocks are pointy and not comfortable to sit on
  • During both sunrise and sunset, the cave is dark. Carrying a torch is a must
  • The route to the basement is not wheelchair friendly

5. Cascada Los Comales, Xilitla – Mexico

Right next to Edward James’s surrealist garden is the secret waterfall called Los Comales. This was the last piece of construction that Edward James designed. The entrance to the waterfall and the decor on top of it were all created by him.

The crystalline waterfall itself is impressive and loud. For the adventurous, you have the option to rappel down the waterfalls for 250 pesos.

If you’re like me and prefer relaxing over sports, head to the Temazcal near the waterfalls. For 250 pesos, you will experience a prehispanic detox ceremony like no other.

Immerse in Surrealism in Xilitla, Mexico

Besides these things to do in Xilitla, the town’s main square is lovely to walk around. There’s an evening market which is an absolute treat for shoppers looking to purchase inexpensive souvenirs, unbelievably delicious flavoured coffee and snacks from the Huasteca region.

All of this makes Xilitla the perfect town for the adventurous, coffee-addicts, art and nature-loving travellers.

Is Xilitla Mexico Safe?

As a solo female traveller, I found Xilitla to be extremely safe in the early mornings and even after sunset. The town centre is bustling with local families most hours of the day. I would avoid walking lonely streets after dark and practice general care of personal belongings in public places. If you decide to stay in a hostel, make sure to purchase backpacker’s travel essentials such as an anti-theft bag or even a sturdy lock for your bag to avoid any petty robberies.

How To Go from Mexico City to Xilitla

If you’re going on a road trip from Mexico City, you have two route options that will get you to Xilitla in about 6-7 hours. Route 1 : Make your way towards Pachuca and go to Tamazunchale and from there, to Xilitla Route 2 : Drive towards Queretaro, passing by Bernal & Pinal de Amoles to reach Xilitla. Both the routes have winding roads. If you aren’t used to driving in Mexico, take the flight or bus instead.

A Guide to Visiting Xilitla, San Luis Potosi | Mexico 2023

One of the most magical places I visited in Mexico was the village of Xilitla, tucked away in the lush forests of San Luis Potosi state. It is part of the stunning region of Mexico known as La Huasteca Potosina, and home to one of my favorite places I visited in Mexico. Although very popular among Mexican tourists, it is still a bit of a hidden gem among international travelers. Actually, you may have seen Xilitla before and not even known it. There are music videos, commercials, and more all using the famous surrealist garden as their backdrop.

edward james garden xilitla mexico

You don’t want to miss out on Xilitla. It’s easily one of my favorite  pueblos magico s in all of Mexico . Few international travelers make it to the region of La Huasteca Potosina . For those that do, they are rewarded beyond their wildest dreams. Because seriously, this place feels like a dream sometimes.

How To Get To Xilitla

Despite its popularity, Xilitla is still quite difficult to get to if you don’t have your own car. It’s a small village and deep in the heart of La Huasteca Potosina. I spent a lot of time on public transportation while I was exploring this region. Thankfully, Xilitla is just one bus ride away if you decide to use Ciudad Valles as your home base. The bus ride from Ciudad Valles takes about two hours. You can go with the company Grupo Vencedor, which leaves Ciudad Valles’ main terminal pretty frequently.

The landscapes were reminiscent of South East Asia’s lush landscapes, and it brought me back to the rural areas of Laos. Once you get to Xilitla, you’ll be dropped off on the main road just outside of the city center. From there, your accommodation should be within walking distance, unless you decide to stay in one of the coolest places I’ve stayed at in Mexico.

Oh, and before you go, make sure to have good travel insurance handy whenever you’re out adventuring. I use  SafetyWing  to keep me covered throughout my travels.

It is about a 20-minute walk from the center of Xilitla, but right across from the Edward James Surrealist Garden. The property is peaceful, beautiful, and affordable. If you want to have an unforgettable experience in Xilitla, I’d recommend staying in one of their beautifully-decorated teepees. They are basic on the inside, but for the price, you receive great value. You’ll want to be spending most of your time outdoors anyway. Casa Caracol is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature and get yourself in the right mindset for visiting Edward James’ castle.

If you want something a little more central and in town, then Sukha Hostel is a good option. I stayed at Sukha Hostel in San Luis Potosi city, but opted for Casa Caracol while I was in Xilitla. If the Sukha in Xilitla is anything like the one in San Luis Potosi, then I know it will have a great and welcoming vibe for travelers.

As an affiliate of Hostelworld, a portion of any bookings made through these links will go towards supporting my blog and future adventures, at no extra cost to you.

What To Do in Xilitla

Obviously, the main draw to Xilitla is the otherworldly Edward James Surrealist Garden . Who is Edward James? Well, let’s just say Salvador Dali himself called Edward James “crazier than all the surrrealists put together”. This is located about a 20-minute walk from the center of Xilitla. You can also take a taxi there, since the walk is mostly along muddy roads and some steep uphill and downhill stretches through town. The walk is quite scenic though, and you’ll stumble into a waterfall here or there along the way. Once you start to run into the vendors selling their wares outside of the garden’s entrance, you’ll know you’ve arrived.

tours a xilitla

Keep in mind that you might have to buy tickets in advance. I was able to get last-minute tickets through Casa Caracol, although it was more expensive as it was through a private guided tour. When I went, people were given time slots. I’m not sure if that was a COVID-precaution or how they normally operate, so try and double-check a few days in advance to make sure there’s a time slot for you to visit when you’ll be in Xilitla.

The garden itself is absolutely breathtaking. It often feels like another planet, a mix between Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland. If you have access to some psychedelic substances, I can imagine it would augment the experience to inter-dimensional levels. The garden is beautiful and nonsensical, but one of the most picturesque places you’ll ever roam through. Along with the array of wacky sculptures and structures, you’re fully immersed in stunning natural beauty. The lush green forest will surround you every step of the way, but you’ll also stumble into waterfalls, rivers, and the occasional colorful bird or snake. I won’t post too many pictures, because I want you to experience the wonder and awe fully on your first visit to Edward James’ sculpture garden.

There are other things to do in Xilitla, mostly revolving around the natural scenery in the area. You can use Xilitla as a home base to check out some waterfalls or do some more adventurous activities. La Huasteca Potosina has no shortage of outdoors adventures. Although Xilitla is a can’t-miss destination in La Huasteca Potosina, it might not be the best home base to use for exploring the area. Although Ciudad Valles might be the ugliest city I visited in Mexico, it has everything you’ll need and has a more central location to get to places like Tamasopo, El Naranjo and beyond. Here’s my full guide to La Huasteca Potosina .

Within the town of Xilitla itself, you won’t find too much. It is picturesque in its own way, with the lush green mountains serving as a beautiful backdrop to the colorful city. However, it is definitely not as clean or as modern as Mexico’s more internationally-known destinations. I didn’t have any food that really wowed me, and as far as I know, nightlife isn’t a big thing here. There are a few museums, and the can’t-miss one is the Leonora Carrington Museum right in the city center. If you haven’t had your fill of surrealist art from the garden, then you can indulge in the renowned Mexican artist’s work. She is perhaps the most famous female artist from the surrealism period.

Xilitla is truly an otherworldly experience and remains one of my favorite places I ever visited in Mexico . It is a bit of a detour from the more popular destinations of Mexico, but if you can make it here, do not pass up the opportunity.

How to Visit Las Pozas, Edward James’ Surrealist Garden (Jardín Escultórico Edward James) — Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, Mexico

I stumbled upon the most whimsical, dreamlike sculpture garden nestled in Mexico’s rainforest by chance (or algorithm, rather). When planning my trip to the Huasteca Potosina region of the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí, Edward James’ Surrealist Garden came up as a related image. I had spent hours researching hidden waterfalls in the region, but Las Pozas was perhaps the most intriguing. Named Las Pozas for the series of pools formed by the waterfalls running through it, Edward James Surrealist Garden in Xilitla is a feast for the eyes, and a perfect example of nature taking over.

Las Pozas is a figment of imagination come to life by English writer, Edward James. Originally painted in vibrant color, whimsical concrete structures and staircases to nowhere find themselves intertwined with the rainforest’s floral and fauna. The sculpture garden is full of symbolism. When the paint wore away from the concrete, management decided not to restore the color as the rainforest had become overgrown with the sculpture garden, forming something entirely new and romantic in its own way. Now, visitors who manage to make the trip to the remote mountain town of Xilitla can take guided tours of the property for just a small fee.

Of course, when I came across images of Edward James’ Surrealist Garden, I had to add it to my Huasteca Potosina itinerary. To this day, it’s still one of my favorite attractions in Mexico , and one of the most unique attractions I’ve been to in the world. I’ve yet to see any other place in the world that could truly be called similar.

As beautiful as this destination is, it’s almost equally as confusing to get to. These days, it seems like most of the places I end up are. The most stressful trips usually make for the most gratifying final destinations, and Las Pozas is no exception. I’ve made the journey and worked out the biggest issues you’ll encounter. If you’re looking to learn more or make the journey for yourself, keep reading!

HOW TO GET TO LAS POZAS – EDWARD JAMES’ SURREALIST GARDEN

Driving to las pozas.

Like most attractions in La Huasteca Potosina, renting a car and driving is the best way to reach Las Pozas is by far. We picked up our rental car at the San Luis Potosí airport, and kept it for the entire duration of our trip. Click here to view rental car options at SLP. For the Huasteca Potosina region as a whole, I strongly recommend trying to rent a high clearance vehicle or SUV such as a Jeep, if possible. There’s a lot of off road driving with very rough road conditions. Our little economy car managed to make it through, but not without some tense and uncertain moments.

I stayed in Ciudad Valles, the largest and most central town in the Huasteca Potosina region. Most of the drive between Ciudad Valles and Las Pozas is very straightforward and on the highway. When you begin reaching the sculpture garden, the road narrows and eventually turns into dirt. It goes without saying, but when this happens, drive slowly and with caution. The dirt road is filled with tons of potholes. Large stones and roots emerge from all over the road, making it easy to get into a less than optimal situation.

Edward James’ Surrealist Garden is located just a few minutes from the mountain town of Xilitla, however, and I can’t emphasize this enough, both are very remote. When I describe Xilitla as a mountain town, I really mean it. Think Positano on steroids, with rougher roads.

seven deadly sins stone snake sculpture rain forest edward james surrealist garden xilitla mexico stone pathway las pozas huasteca potosina san luis potosi

Most travelers to Las Pozas will never need to go all the way to Xilitla if they’ve purchased tickets online. I, however, did not do that, so we ended up on a topsy turvy, rollercoaster of a drive to the top of Xilitla, where the ticket kiosk is. My friend, as the driver, was less than amused. Me, as the passenger, who did not need to navigate the absolute wall of a road we drove up, found Xilitla incredibly charming.

I’ve honestly never seen a town with such extreme roads. Roads in Xilitla are crazy narrow, are steep enough to be the incline on a rollercoaster, and are filled with tight turns. The roads are paved (thank goodness), but are still really bumpy. When you reach the center of town, it’s worth it. The town is really cute and I recommend that any traveler to Edward James’ Surrealist garden takes the time to walk around there before or after.

Keep an eye on gas during this drive. Xilitla doesn’t have a gas station to my knowledge, and gas stations are few and far between while driving between Ciudad Valles and Xilitla.

edward james surrealist garden concrete structure in rainforest xilitla mexico las pozas san luis potosi la huasteca potosina

Planning on staying in Ciudad Valles ? If you don’t have a rental car, taxi, private driver, or tour might be your next best option. I wouldn’t recommend taxi compared to rental car, as it will likely end up being much more expensive. Taxis are scarce outside of Ciudad Valles. For that reason, if you take a taxi anywhere in La Huasteca, I strongly, strongly recommend that you hire the taxi for the full day, and request that they wait for you at your destination. I cannot stress enough that if you don’t arrange for a taxi to wait during the day, you might find yourself stranded and unable to find another.

While researching online, you might find that private tours and drivers in La Huasteca Potosina are few and far between. As San Luis Potosí is still an under-the-radar destination for many international travelers, many local tour agencies still do not have online listings. I recommend reaching out to your reception at your hotel, as they likely know of local tour operators who can assist you.

If you are more comfortable arranging a tour in advance online, click below to explore your options!

JARDÍN ESCULTÓRICO EDWARD JAMES HOURS

Edward James’ Surrealist Garden is currently open from 9 am to 6 pm, Wednesday through Monday. The garden is presently closed on Tuesdays.

LAS POZAS ADMISSION FEE AND TICKETS

Admission to Las Pozas can be purchased in advance online, or in person in Xilitla. Locating the ticket kiosk in Xilitla is simple in theory, stressful in practice. The ticket kiosk is in Xilitla’s town square at the top of the town. Sounds simple, right? In actuality, not so much. As previously mentioned, Xilitla’s roads are narrow, and extremely vertical. Add an extra half hour to your drive time if you’re trying to reach the town square, because you might need it.

When you reach the ticket kiosk, you’ll be asked for which time of entry you would like. The entrance fee at Las Pozas is $125 pesos ($6.15 USD) per person. Included in the cost of admission is the mandatory guided tour.

It’s important to know that you cannot purchase tickets at Jardín Escultórico Edward James itself. Speaking from experience, if you reach the entrance to the sculpture garden without purchasing admission online or in person, they will turn you away and point you towards Xilitla. Reaching the garden requires driving through some bumpy, pothole filled dirt jungle roads. You definitely don’t want to have to drive down those roads more than you need to!

LAS POZAS GUIDED TOURS

If a third party tour group tries to get you to book a tour for Edwards James’ Surrealist Garden, don’t do it. The sculpture garden has their own tour guides, who are incredibly knowledgeable about Edward James, Xilitla, and the history and construction of the sculpture garden.

The only way to view the garden is to go on one of Jardín Escultórico Edward James’ official guided tours. Previously, free exploration and swimming in the waterfalls and pools was allowed, however due to the global situation, this has changed. The tour is included in the price of the admission, and is a group tour. Groups can be up to 25 people, however we only had 10 or so on ours.

Tours are offered both in Spanish and in English. Keep in mind that Spanish tours are offered much more frequently than English tours, so if an English tour is a must for you, you may end up waiting a few hours for one. The tour itself is an hour and a half, however the tour I was on ran longer.

As only elementary, barely conversational Spanish speakers, we definitely should have been on the English tour. However, our tour guide easy to understand (meaning that I picked up about every third word, enough to piece together a narrative). We got lucky enough to meet a few other people who spoke English on the tour. All in all, we ended up having a laugh and making friends with some really wonderful travelers.

WHAT TO BRING TO LAS POZAS

There really isn’t anything near Xilitla for miles, so it’s important to come prepared for the full day! Here’s your must haves for Las Pozas:

It goes without saying that as a sculpture garden, Jardín Surrealista de Edward James is completely outdoors. Although overall it is heavily shaded, I do still recommend bringing sunscreen , especially if you plan on walking around Xilitla, which is full sun! When in Mexico, I highly recommend using a biodegradable, reef safe sunscreen to product the local environment and aquatic life. Although this isn’t relevant to Las Pozas directly, as presently swimming isn’t allowed (although it has been in the past), the Huasteca Potosina is filled with water attractions where it’s important to be mindful of this.

Being in the rainforest, bugs are inevitable. When packing, make sure to throw in the bug spray ! If packing it isn’t an option, I recommend picking it up at the Chedraui in Ciudad Valles. Chedraui is similar to Walmart and is my go-to for essentials that I may have forgotten to pack, such as a beach towel, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.

Las Pozas’ dirt and cobbled paths are not ideal for heels or sandals. I did wear flat sandals, which wasn’t awful, but given the hilly terrain and the fact that you’re in the rainforest, I definitely think sneakers are the way to go. The garden is known to get a bit of rain, which can make the stone paths slippery. As a general rule of thumb, always have a pair with you in the car when in La Huasteca Potosina, as many attractions require a short hike or climbing over rocks! Regardless, you will be doing some walking, stairs, etc. so plan accordingly. My sneaker of choice is always the APL Techloom Pro . These lightweight tennis shoes are like walking on clouds. I wore these all through Mexico with no issue.

There are some concessions stands and restaurants outside of the entrance to Las Pozas where you can buy bottled water if needed. However, with a long drive to and from Ciudad Valles, you may want to pack some extra. If you want to go a more environmentally friendly route, buy large water jugs to refill a reusable water bottle , or bring a personal water purifier. Note that for Mexico, your water filter needs to be able filter out or purify bacteria specifically, not just dirt and particles. Officially, the garden does not allow any food or beverage into the premises, with the exception of bottled water.

Whether on your phone or a DSLR, you’re definitely going to want to bring a camera ! Edward James’ Surrealist Garden is one of the most interesting photo locations that I’ve been to in Mexico. I shot this garden on a Sony A7III with a kit lens. Leave the drone and GoPro at home. When I went, drones were not allowed at Las Pozas, and frankly, there’s so much tree coverage that it would be difficult to fly one well anyway. Despite Las Pozas translating into “The Pools,” there’s no swimmable water at Edward James’ Surrealist Garden, also negating the need for a GoPro.

Be mindful that the garden does not permit videography at this time. The garden also does not allow the use of tripods.

Cash is king in La Huasteca Potosina. Whether you need to refill on gas, purchase entrance tickets, or stop for a snack, you’ll need cash. When withdrawing cash in Mexico, I always recommend using an ATM at an actual bank, or at a Chedraui to avoid being scammed. Chedraui stores are guarded with armed guard, both periodically throughout the day, and all night, making them a safe bet for ATM use. In the region, I recommend withdrawing cash in Ciudad Valles at Chedraui before going anywhere. The towns surrounding Huasteca Potosina attractions are very small and do not have bank locations or big box stores.

WHERE TO STAY FOR LAS POZAS IN LA HUASTECA POTOSINA

Posada el castillo.

Although many tourists to La Huasteca Potosina know of Las Pozas, few realize that Edward James’ place of residence in Xilitla still exists, and is now operating as a hotel . The house was built by Plutarco Gastélum, who was Edward James’ collaborator in building the garden. Originally, El Castillo was Gastélum’s family home. The Gastélum family still maintains and runs the property today. Guests will notice that the beautiful home has some of the same architectural features as Las Pozas. Being in Xilitla, the house also has stunning views of the Sierra Gorda mountains.

For those staying elsewhere, Posada El Castillo does offer tours for $100 pesos per person. Tours last approximately 40 minutes, and are available between 1 and 7 pm.

HOTEL TAPASOLI

Looking for a hotel in Xilitla that’s nestled in nature with beautiful views? Look no further than Hotel Tapasoli. This charming boutique hotel is known for its nest style rooms, and cozy, den style villas built into the mountain. Unlike Posada El Castillo, this property is surrounded by rainforest and right in nature.

HOTEL CASA ORTIZ

Edward James’ Surrealist Garden is one of the furthest destinations from Ciudad Valles, however if you’re interested in exploring other Huasteca Potosina attractions, Ciudad Valles is the best city to stay in. Ciudad Valles is central to many attractions, so even though you’ll still have a bit of a drive, you won’t be driving more than three hours any direction.

I stayed at Hotel Casa Ortiz in Ciudad Valles. This charming boutique hotel is located on a safe, quiet residential street just a couple blocks from the main road. The hotel’s intimate restaurant is just across the street. At $40 a night, Hotel Casa Ortiz is a fantastic value for the price, and one of the best hotels in Ciudad Valles.
