5 Best Packing List for Vacation Apps: Travelers Over 50 Approved

Packing for a travel - easier with one of the best packing list apps

Have you ever forgotten an essential item on your trips? Or come home with a heavy suitcase full of unworn clothing? Using a packing list app will be one the best travel tools you’ll find to make your trips easier. Whether you are going on an around the world adventure, or off to visit family, using a packing app takes the worry out of what to pack and what to RE-pack at the end of your trip. And over time, use of an app will help you to eliminate those extras that you lug around unworn, which will be better for both you and the planet!

Travel suitcase with camera, headphones

As a lifelong list maker, I’ve enjoyed putting together packing lists for my adventures. But as my traveling increased after becoming an empty nester, I realized a master packing list would save me a lot of duplication. Since finding a packing app for my master list (and the trip lists I’ve refined from the master) my travel life is so much easier. I don’t have to worry about forgetting those little extras – charging cords, medication, etc. And as I use the app I’m able to see what clothing worked on my trip and what didn’t. I can keep track of what I need to replace or repurpose for my next trip and ultimately create a collection of travel-friendly clothing.

Using a packing list app consistently will make your packing more efficient. And packing efficiently is one step towards being a responsible traveler!

So… what is the best packing list app? That will depend on you! How you travel, what you’re comfortable with, and how much depth you want in a travel checklist. I’ve tested several of the best travel checklist apps for Apple devices (iOS) and recommend them below from easiest to use to most challenging .

Table of Contents

Best Packing List Apps for Ease of Use

The simplest packing lists all use a packing ‘wizard” system. These apps open with a screen of travel options for the user to select – who’s traveling, how many days, where you’ll be staying, and on most, what activities you plan on doing. From the options selected, a packing list is generated.

You can use this list immediately or customize it a bit by eliminating or adding items. Swipe to remove an item and use the + option at the bottom of each category to add anything not listed.

The catalog options generated – casual shirt, long pants – are very basic. This might be enough for you. But if you’re looking for more detail, add customized options. For example, I was told I’d need “7 casual tops” for my test trip. If I wanted to specify long sleeved merino tops, a tunic, or a graphic tee, I’d manually add those. Good news is that once I’ve created a list that worked for me, I was able to duplicate it for my next trip.

All of the packing list apps below are reliable and easy to use. But each is slightly different with extras that might appeal to you. I’ve tested them for short family trips and longer adventures and give you pros and cons below.

🌱 PackPoint

PackPoint one of the best packing apps, especially for older adults

Cost: $2.99 Ease of Use: easy

Google Play Editor’s Choice Award Winner

This is probably the most popular travel checklist app. It’s intuitive, stable, and customizable with an upgrade to the pro edition.

My favorite thing about this app is the ability to pack light by checking the boxes for ‘repeat basics’ and ‘laundry’. Most of us older travelers have learned that packing light is essential to being able to travel comfortably. Avoiding heavy luggage makes cobblestone streets, and hotels without elevators, much, much easier.

And most all of us know that reducing the weight of what we carry on air travel reduces the amount of fuel needed for the flight.

With PackPoint the number of items to be packed is ideal for light packing

  • Pack light!
  • Very easy to use
  • Weather info given for destination
  • Set up for one person only
  • No ability to specify where item is to be packed
  • No values for travel items can be added
  • Baggage weights are not calculated

Packr packing list app - screenshots

Cost: first list free, additional lists and options with full purchase $3.99 Ease of Use: easy

Packr is a great app for short trips. It syncs with TripIt, lets you add family members to the list, and is very intuitive. Upgrade to the paid version to add multiple destinations to your list.

The multiple destinations option is ideal for long trips, i.e., 2 weeks in NYC, followed by a weekend in Miami. The app will suggest clothing and travel for both destinations. But you will need to do a bit of editing if you want to pack light! In my test case, the app suggested I pack 15 tops, 15 socks, and 4 pairs of shoes for a 16 day trip!

Fun Fact: this is the app used by SpaceX travelers!

  • Ability to add multiple destinations
  • Syncs with TripIt
  • Includes weather forecasts, and nearby attractions (from Get Your Guide)
  • Can’t select for traveling light – too many items!
  • No baggage weights calculated

Cost : 3 lists free (with ads & limitations)

  • Remove ads – $2.99
  • Additional 5 lists – $.99
  • 3 basic trip options included, for more options, I.e. city trip, business trip – $.99 each.

Packtor packing list app screenshots

Ease of use – simple

Another good option for keeping track of your packing. Again, you enter information about your trip to generate your list. Tick the checkbox on the bottom if you want to pack light. Chose this option if you’re comfortable re-wearing outfits and/or plan on doing laundry. Once again, add and subtract items to make the list fit your travel style.

This app suggests items that should go in your carry-on bag – very helpful!

Packtor is the only app on this list that has the option to prepare packing lists for more than one person. You can opt for a couples list, or a family list. I like that the family list includes some items specific to a child’s comfort, like a nightlight, toys, or water wings.

  • Easy to use immediately after downloading
  • Option to create couple or family packing lists
  • Extra costs for full app options (annoying ads on free version)
  • No preset category for travel activities
  • Can’t add monetary value for items

Number of Items Generated for a 16 Day Trip

As a test case, I imagined a 16 day trip to Aruba, where I would be enjoying the beach, as well as hiking, taking pictures, and having one or two fancy dinners. Both PackPoint and Packr gave me extensive suggestions for the beach, hiking, and photography. The big difference that I found in comparing the three easy-to-use apps was the number of clothing items suggested for the trip. As an almost minimalist packer, I know I’d never pack the 10 tops suggested by Packtor, let alone the 15 Packr specifies. But it’s easy to adjust the numbers of both apps to more realistic numbers.

Best Packing List App for Detail Oriented Travelers

On some trips – safaris, camping, etc.- there is a limit put on luggage size and weight. After our first safari when I ran afoul of carry-on rules , I began using a packing list where I could record the weight of each item and know, in advance of arriving at the airport, what my luggage would weigh. I put together a spreadsheet with approximate weights of all the items included. And after ALMOST losing my luggage on another trip, I added the monetary value of my items to the spreadsheet. Finding an app that could take the place of this spreadsheet made my life so much easier! Most people are not as… um, detailed oriented as I am, but if you are, I suggest you take a look at Packing Pro.

Packing Pro

Cost : $2.99. Ease of Use : average to challenging

Packing list generated by PackingPro travel checklist app

Packing Pro is one of the original mobile device packing list apps. It is not as streamlined or as intuitive to use as others but once set-up, gives the user fully customization options and the ability to generate totals for all the trip items.

When you first begin using this app you can choose items from the pre-loaded catalog. You can leave it there, just using the basic list items, or you can specify what bag each item goes in, and/or who it belongs to. This is incredibly helpful when you need to find something quickly without rummaging through all your bags.

Total luggage weight and values from Packing Pro

As you become more familiar with the app, you can begin customizing the catalog. In the example shown, I’ve added a favorite pink button down blouse, and quick dry convertible pants. I like knowing exactly what I’ve decided to include for my capsule wardrobe before the last-minute packing.

Note: it’s not necessary to add a completely new item to the catalog to remind you of what you’ve decided to pack. There is an option on every item for a note. Use this field to note the color or style of the items you’ve decided to pack, and you’ll see those notes when you’re prepared to pack. In the list above I’ve added a note to my shorts that I want my ‘fitness’ shorts.

Again, it takes a while to customize this app for your very specific lists. But once you’ve done this, you can duplicate the lists you create and use them over and over. I have lists for when I visit my Chicago family – one for the summer and one for the winter. When I’m traveling to Chicago in the Fall, I can edit one of these lists to suit the weather and activities. There’s no limit on the number of lists I can have.

  • Can specify what bag to pack your item in (including option for items to wear on travel day)
  • Calculates weight of luggage
  • Details value of belongings
  • Can download list to a CSV spreadsheet
  • Requires intensive set up to get the most out of the app

Add a Style App to Your Travel Tools

I admit to being a packing nerd – constantly in search for the perfect bag and the ultimate travel capsule wardrobe. Having a capsule wardrobe greatly reduces the number of clothes I have to pack, and then carry along the way. This is good for me and for travel sustainability. (Each pound of luggage weight adds to the fuel needed for air travel) When I’m preparing to travel, I use one app to visualize my capsule wardrobe, and another as a travel checklist.

A Quick Refresher on Packing Light with a Travel Capsule

  • Choose neutral, lightweight, easy care clothing as your base.
  • Add one or two lightweight items in coordinating colors.
  • Plan outfits using the clothing you’ve chosen. Ideally, every top should match every bottom so mixing and matching is easy.
  • Winnow down your list until you are sure you have all you need but nothing more.
  • Add a lightweight signature item to add some interest to your wardrobe – a scarf, shawl, or piece of (inexpensive) jewelry.

And my favorite travel wardrobe tip s

A week before your trip, try on your planned outfits. First look for anything that needs mending but, most importantly, look for outfits that don’t flatter or are uncomfortable. Take photos, if possible. This is helpful as sometimes you see yourself better in a picture than a mirror!

Choose ‘travel friendly clothing’ – lightweight, odor resistant, and easy care – and you can travel for two weeks carry on only! Some of the items in your closet will fit these criteria. But as items wear out, think about replacing them with travel friendly clothes .

Use an app like Stylebook to visualize the combinations you can create with the items you’ve chosen!

Cost : $3.99 Ease of Use : time consuming customization required to use as a packing list app.

Planning outfits with Stylebook app

This app is not designed specifically for packing but I’ve found it very useful to visualize my travel capsule wardrobe. It takes some time to set up the app. You will need to upload images of your travel clothes (or use generic images from the web) and use these images to make outfits. But once you’ve created your ‘closet’, you can use it for every trip. ( AND you can use the app to track the outfits you wear daily or for special occasions. Add notes to your outfits to keep from repeating looks for similar events or company. )

For my Bike and Barge trip to the Netherlands –

  • I chose black and white as my base colors with blue and pink accent colors
  • A signature item – a Diane Kroe carry-on cozy which can serve as a scarf, skirt, or cardigan, was in my carry-on. My cozy is in a limited edition print that coordinates with all my colors.
  • I used Stylebook to mix and match my items into outfits
  • I tried on the outfits, took a few selfies, and discarded items that were unflattering.
  • Settled on a perfect combination – 8 tops, 4 bottoms, 2 sweaters, a fleece, and my carry-on cozy [note: 8 tops is more than I usually pack, but as this was a cycling trip with no laundry available, I needed extra tops]

packing list infographic from Stylebook

I added versatility by choosing two tops and bottoms that offer multiple styling options. And chose fabrics that are quick drying and odor resistant. (Lesson learned from the humid barge – avoid cotton as it takes forever to dry!)

Stylebook does have a built in packing checklist, but I used a different app (Packing Pro) once I’ve settled on clothing.

Here is a view of my Amsterdam Stylebook packing list infographic. I found this helpful not just for packing, but for eliminating a lot of wardrobe decision making when getting dressed in my tiny barge cabin.

  • Visualize outfits
  • Good as home closet organizer too
  • Lots of setup required
  • Only for clothing, not gear

Tips for Getting the Most From Your Packing List Apps

  • Once on the trip, reset your packing list (uncheck all the items on the list) and check off items again as they’re used. At the end of the trip you can clearly see what wasn’t needed. Add notes to your travel checklist indicating what was needed and what was superfluous. Pack lighter on your next adventure!
  • Or use the app again before heading home to make sure you’ve left nothing behind.
  • If you’d like to try tip #1 and tip #2, duplicate your travel list! It’s easy on the best packing apps!

Make travel easy: The best packing apps for every type of traveler

Packing is always the worst part of traveling. find the best packing app to help you stay sane for your trip.

Someone packing their suitcase for a trip.

Let’s be real: Packing for a trip is tedious, stressful, and time-consuming. For most of us, it just plain sucks. If you’re not the sort of masochist traveler who actually enjoys packing, smartphone technology is here to help. There’s an app for everything, and they have come up with the best packing apps so you don’t have to cry while putting things randomly into your suitcase.

For almost anyone: PackTeo

For the minimalist traveler: onebag, for the globe hopper: packr, for the list lover: easy pack, for the ultimate lazy traveler: packpoint, for the control freak: packing pro, for the every man traveler: packking, for the outdoorsman: trekpack.

There’s a huge selection of travel apps out there, including packing apps for every flavor of traveler. From control freaks to those who want a dead-simple wizard to hand-hold them through every step of the packing process, these mobile packing apps make the process as quick, painless, and even mindless as possible. These are the best packing apps for travelers who seriously hate to pack.

PackTeo promises to be all things to all people. Whatever your packing style, the app’s user-friendly design makes it a snap to use. For those who like to be in control, it allows for adding specific details about everything in your luggage, like weight and which bag you plan to put each item in. Alternatively, the built-in templates mean you’ll pick from typical lists (say, “ Camping ,” “Cycling,” or “International”) without having to create your own from scratch. Then, it’s just a matter of customizing it to fit your style of travel.

OneBag is arguably the most streamlined travel packing app, aiming to keep the process easy and quick. It encourages packing light (hence the name) with a focus on the weight of each item, ensuring you’re keenly aware of how much stuff is in your bag. As any long-term traveler will tell you, light luggage — only packing your travel essentials or even being a carry-on-only passenger — makes for easy traveling. Knowing the total weight of your luggage also helps to avoid oversized baggage fee surprises at the airport.

Packr has one thing going for it that’s lacking in most other packing apps: Multi-destination trip planning. It seems like a strange oversight, but most of its competitors don’t offer this feature. For that reason alone, it’s the best on this list for landhoppers who typically plan medium or long-term, multi-country trips. It’s otherwise similar to the others on this list, with a solid lineup of features, including auto-generated packing lists, the ability to share your lists with others, and weather forecasting for your next destination .

Easy Pack isn’t the best packing app overall, but there’s a lot to like about it. First, it’s lightweight, and its creators promise it’ll be free forever. Second, while its competitors rely on trip-centric list creation, Easy Pack takes a unique bag-centric approach. So, for example, if you take the same messenger and duffle bag on every trip, it’s easier to create several listed “bags,” and then re-use them for each new trip.

The app takes into account unique points about upcoming trips, like whether you’re traveling with pets, the type of stay, and any transportation concerns. Lastly, it doubles as a daily planning app to help prep for mundane activities closer to your home base, like packing for a day at the beach or taking your dog on a hike.

For travelers who are seriously packing averse, it doesn’t get easier than PackPoint. It’s clear a great deal of thought went into the user interface. The streamlined design offers a simple, wizard-like process to handhold users through every step of packing. Just launch the app and enter a few basic details like the date of your trip, where you’re heading , any activities you plan on doing while there (e.g., hiking , swimming, beach-going, etc.), and whether it’s for business, leisure, or both.

  • This is now the best airport in the world, according to travelers
  • The government just banned this airline practice every traveler hates
  • When is the best time to visit Italy? This is when you should go

PackPoint checks the weather forecast and pre-populates a packing list with a best guess of everything it thinks you might need. It’s just under $3 to buy for either smartphone platform (iOS or Android), but the long list of great features — like TripIt integration, forecast-checking, and list-sharing with friends and family — make it worth it.

If you’re not keen on packing but still appreciate being in full control of the process, Packing Pro is your jam. The app lacks the polish of the others mentioned here, and it could feel a bit confusing on first launch, but it makes up for it with extreme versatility. Every item on your packing list is customizable with options like which bag it goes in, the item’s level of importance for your overall trip, weight, monetary value (for insurance purposes) — the list goes on. Users create specific templates (say, one for business and one for leisure) and you could even create templates within templates if you really want to drill down. This is an app designed for serious “power-user” type travelers.

PackKing’s user interface is simple and streamlined like PackPoint, although it lacks some of the panache. The free version offers a few more features than the former, which is why we like it for most travelers. It offers a long list of preloaded activities, like Hiking , Photography, Beach, Dog, and Mobile Office. All of these include their own related items, so it’s easy to fine-tune your packing list no matter where you’re going or what you’re doing . It also asks if and how often you’ll be doing laundry while traveling, which will seriously lighten your clothing load.

We said there was an app for every type of traveler, and we’re not leaving out the outdoorsy one. TrekPack is for the hikers and trekkers who will do the bulk of their traveling with their feet. You could use one of the other apps for your non- hiking days and make sure to use TrekPack for the adventuring days.

Put in what kind of terrain you’ll encounter, where you’ll sleep, how you’re going to cook your food, and the total weight of your bag to create your ultimate packing list. You’ll be able to make multiple lists for the same trip if you want to find the one that fits best. You could even share your lists with others to see if you forgot something you’d need or might have overpacked.

However you travel and wherever you travel, if you have to pack a bag to get there, make sure you find the right app to help you on your journey. Take one thing off your plate so you don’t wind up screaming into an empty bag. You won’t want to leave your packing to the last minute once you figure out which of the best packing apps is the one for your travel needs.

When traveling, you don't want to throw your stuff in a duffel bag and call it a day. You want luggage that will keep your items organized while adding a quiet sophistication to your look. German company Rimowa is the luggage brand to trust your travels to. Rimowa has been in the luxury business for over 100 years, but you won't have to wait that long to check out their new Hammerschlag collection. Rimowa blends old and new We love it when a brand takes a vintage piece and modernizes it. The Rimowa Hammerschlag line combines elements old and new without skimping on the craftsmanship the brand is known for. Behind-the-scenes details

Originally called Gortz & Morszeck, after the two men who started things in 1898, Rimowa was forced to switch production to aluminum-only luggage when the factory burned down in the 1930s, wiping out the other materials. Now, the signature aluminum grooves are a sleek companion for your trip. The vintage features What makes the Hammerschlag collection unique is its homage to the 1966 archival piece. It starts with the handle, which might be leather, but the look and design are based on the classic metal version. Rimowa takes things back even further, with each of the limited cases given a Cognac leather tag with an 1898 stamp as a nod to the origins of the company and the city of Cologne, Germany, where Rimowa still keeps headquarters. The Rimowa Hammerschlag collection The Hammerschlag collection consists of the Hand-Carry Case, a standard-size suitcase, and the Cabin, your rolling luggage piece.

As travelers, we are accustomed to meticulously planning what we can and cannot bring in our carry-on luggage, ensuring compliance with airline regulations and security protocols. However, amidst the focus on carry-on restrictions, it’s easy to overlook the limitations imposed on checked baggage. Surprisingly, there is a long list of TSA prohibited items that are strictly banned from being stowed away in the checked compartment of a plane. So, before you zip up your suitcase and bid farewell to your checked bag, let’s explore what items must remain out of sight during your journey.

What can you take on a plane? TSA prohibited items When it comes to packing for a flight, we are often well-versed in the restrictions placed on carry-on items, particularly the infamous 3-1-1 liquid rule. Yet, as we organize our carry-ons, it is crucial not to ignore the contents of our checked baggage. While it may seem like a convenient place to store bulkier or less essential items, several objects should never be put in your checked baggage. From flammable materials to certain liquids to popular foods, the restrictions are broad and varied. These are just a few of TSA prohibited items to consider before packing your suitcase. 1. Wrapped presents Wrapped presents always run the risk of being flagged by security. These wrapped gifts can trigger suspicion or require additional screening, leading to delays and potential damage to your wrapped items. Additionally, if security officials cannot identify the contents of a wrapped gift, they may need to unwrap it entirely. 2. An abundance of cash Packing an abundance of cash in your checked baggage is ill-advised for several reasons, particularly concerning security and potential legal complications. While no specific TSA regulations limit the amount of cash you can carry domestically, travelers entering the U.S. must declare amounts exceeding $10,000 to customs officials. However, regardless of the amount, carrying a significant sum of cash can attract attention from TSA agents, who have the authority to question you about the source and purpose of the money.

Amid the fallout from the Boeing 737 MAX crisis, there is a looming possibility of airline tickets becoming more expensive. Incidents like the door of an Alaskan Airlines 737 MAX detaching mid-flight have prompted Boeing to slow down the production of this aircraft.

With airlines facing potential delays in receiving their ordered Boeing planes and some carriers like United even halting orders for certain models altogether, the industry braces for a reduction in available aircraft. These delays, compounded by intensive federal investigations into Boeing’s manufacturing processes, may limit the number of planes available to American carriers. Consequently, this reduction in aircraft availability poses a risk of driving up airline prices for travelers.

1. PackPoint

Website: packpnt.com

Download: Google Play | App Store

If you are looking for one of the best packing list apps available, PackPoint is the first to be mentioned.

PackPoint considers your final location, departure date, length of stay, and activities when creating your packing list. It also considers the forecast when suggesting how many shirts or pants you will need. This takes the guesswork out of packing and ensures you have enough clothing for your trip.

The app also offers a streamlined design and user-friendly interface, making packing a breeze. It's available for both iOS and Android platforms, and its integration with other travel apps like TripIt and list-sharing with friends and family makes it a comprehensive solution for your packing needs.

While the paid version costs $2.99 annually, the app's long list of great features makes it a worthwhile investment for frequent travellers who want a customised packing list.

Website: onebag.app

Download: Google Play

OneBag is hands down the best packing list app for minimalist travellers. It understands the importance of packing light and keeping everything in one bag, just like we do!

You can easily create custom packing lists for different types of trips. It's super convenient because you can add items to your personal inventory, allowing you to build your packing list effortlessly every time you travel.

But here's the real advantage: OneBag lets you input the weight of each item. That means it automatically adds everything for you, so you can easily check if you exceed your airline's weight limit. No more last-minute surprises at the airport !

Even better, your items are neatly categorised, so you can see which part of your packing list can be lightened to stay within the baggage limit. It's like having a personal packing assistant right in your pocket.

If there's room for improvement, users have suggested a search function, decimal grams, and the option to create inventory templates. But even without these features, OneBag is already a well-thought-out and well-designed app that'll make your travel preparations a breeze.

Website: packteo

Regarding packing list apps, PackTeo is a great option that deserves consideration for the title of the best. It has 4.32 stars out of 5 based on customer reviews on Google Play.

First, it allows you to add items in multiple ways. You can pick items from a general catalogue, type them in yourself, or use a list generator that creates lists based on your travel details. This makes creating a personalised packing list tailored to your specific needs easy.

Moreover, its user-friendly design makes it easy to use, regardless of your packing style. The app's pre-made templates let you select from categories like "Camping," "Cycling," and "International" and then modify them to fit your needs.

You can also write out your packing list by hand and include as much information as you like, such as the quantity and weight of each item and the specific bag they will go in.

Plus, the app will inquire as to the number of products, their total weight, and the type of bag you want to use. This way, you'll be able to see what you're bringing at a glance and plan accordingly.

Website: packr.app

Download: App Store

Another great packing list app to consider is Packr. It is perfect for multi-destination trips, as it allows you to select as many destinations as you like.

We recommend Packr Premium (which will cost you $2.99 per month) has several powerful extra features that are well worth the investment. Here's the breakdown.

First, it gives you a detailed 10-day weather forecast for your chosen locations. The app's "family mode" is another selling point. It allows you and your families to plan over 25 activities and lists together.

Ah, don’t forget to make use of its “nearby attractions” as well. Packr will show you museums, parks, and other sights in the area when you enter your travel plans into the app. Simply browse through the list and add any attractions that interest you to your itinerary.

Its flexibility is also a plus. You can create unlimited lists for different needs and trips and reuse them over and over again. This makes it easy to stay organised and prepared for any type of trip, whether it is a quick weekend getaway or a long-term adventure.

5. PackKing

The next name on our list of the best packing list apps is PackKing. It is easy to use and offers automatic recommendations based on your gender, mode of transportation, expected weather, and planned activities.

You can scroll through different lists, such as "Gadgets," "Hygiene," and "Clothing," to find what you need quickly. One of the app's best features is its "To-Do's" section, which helps you prepare for your trip in addition to packing.

PackKing supports various activities, including international travel, outdoor activities like hiking, and even self-providing trips. The app also offers packing recommendations for different modes of transportation and climates, making it a versatile and valuable tool.

6. Packing Pro

Website: packingpro.asp

For those travelling with a large group, Packing Pro is an excellent packing list app you might want to check out. You should take advantage of its extensive list of items covering everything from clothing to electronics to toiletries.

The app also offers a "Master Catalog" with over 800 items, so you can easily find what you need and add it to your list. You can customise your lists with images, alerts, and a list of priorities. Once you have completed your list, you can print or email it, sync it to iCloud, or export it into Excel, Numbers, or Google Docs.

The only downside of Packing Pro is its overall design, which some users may find unattractive and outdated. However, this app might be perfect for you if you prioritise functionality and features over form.

7. Easy Pack

Download: Google Play

Easy Pack is listed as one of the best packing list apps for those wanting a lightweight, free solution. It considers unique details about your upcoming trips, such as whether you are travelling with pets , the type of stay, and any transportation concerns.

Moreover, the app doubles as a daily planning app that can help you prepare for mundane activities closer to home, like packing for a day at the beach or taking your dog on a hike.

Easy Pack's "Assistant" section accommodates digital nomads and long-term travellers. You can create a generic "bag" not tied to any particular destination or timeline but based on more general travel details like who you're travelling with, the types of transportation you'll use, and the activities you plan to engage in.

How To Make Most Of Using Packing List Apps

And that’s our selection of the best packing apps. Now come the tips and tricks to make full use of their features.

1. Create Lists for Different Types of Trips

Depending on the type of trip you're going on (e.g., vacation, business, camping), create different lists or templates to cater to specific needs. A beach vacation will require different items than a ski trip . Ask yourself these questions:

  • Where am I travelling?
  • What’s the weather at the destination like?
  • Who am I travelling with?
  • Will there be young children in the group?
  • How long am I going? A week? A month?
  • What bag/suitcase am I using?

For instance, if you are going to travel for a month, you will need to pack a 40L backpack full to the brim. Are you going to a winter wonderland ? Throw in more layers and a jacket! Is your destination warm and sunshine all year round? Don’t hesitate to pack more sunscreen . Create as many lists as you need and make the appropriate changes.

2. Categorise, categorise, categorise

best packing list apps

Categorising is the bones of every packing list app. By breaking down all your belongings into categories and sub-categories, it’s easier to keep track of everything.

Passports, ID, medicines, etc., anything you can’t live (or travel) without, throw them into a dedicated "always in the bag" list. Make this checklist stay at the top of your packing app list. That way, you won’t ever forget them. Here’s what our packing list would look like:

  • The Essentials
  • Personal Care And Hygiene
  • Medications And First Aid
  • Electronics
  • Additional Supplies
  • Miscellaneous

Here are some ideas for sub-categories you may need to add further:

  • If you are camping:
  • Outdoor Gear
  • Foods And Drinks
  • Cooking And Kitchen Gear
  • Campsite Setup
  • Navigation And Safety
  • If you are travelling with someone:
  • Anything that you two could share, e.g. toothpaste, sunscreen, etc.
  • If you are on a business trip:
  • Formal attire
  • Work Supplies
  • If you travel with children:
  • Feeding Essentials
  • Entertainment And Comfort Items
  • Diapers And Diapering Supplies
  • Child Health And Safety
  • Baby Carrier And Infant Essentials
  • If you travel for photography:
  • Camera Equipment
  • Storage and Memory
  • Lighting Equipment
  • Photography Books and Resources

3.  Review and Refine

You can take advantage of packing list applications by keeping your lists up-to-date depending on your past trips. Think back on what you used and didn't use on past journeys. Pack only the necessities, consider any requirements of your destination, and ask other travellers for advice. The key here is packing neither too much or too little.

1. Are Packing List Apps Only Suitable For Long Trips?

No, packing list apps are beneficial for all types of short or long trips. These apps help you stay organised and ensure you don't forget any essentials, regardless of the duration of your journey. Everything could be tailored to your liking.

2. Can I Customise The Packing Lists In These Apps?

Yes, all the featured packing list apps in this guide allow customisation. You can add or remove items, create separate lists for different occasions, and tailor the lists to your specific needs.

3. Can I Use These Apps Offline?

Many packing list apps offer offline functionality, allowing you to access your lists even when you don't have an internet connection. However, checking the specific app's features and requirements is essential before relying on offline access.

4. Do These Apps Have Reminders or Notifications?

Yes, many packing list apps provide reminder and notification features. You can set reminders for packing specific items or receive notifications for upcoming trips, ensuring you stay on top of your packing game.

Bottom Line

Packing for a vacation can be a breeze with the help of packing list apps. From creating custom lists to tracking your progress, these apps simplify the entire process, ensuring you don't forget any essential items.

Printable Travel Packing List

Check the weather at your destination.

This seems intuitive, but you’d be surprised how many people are stuck traveling in rainy season without a raincoat.

Note how many days/nights you will be away.

This will help you decide the number of necessary outfits. Obviously, how often you prefer to wear the same clothes plays a part in this as well.

Note any special activities/events you may partake in.

Traveling for a birthday? You don’t want to forget that heartfelt gift you bought weeks in advance. Going to a wedding? It’d be a shame if you showed up without your suit. Hiking in Hawaii? Your water-shoes won’t get much use if you leave them behind.

Packing List

Make a packing list early and review it at least twice. (Yes, twice.)

You can easily find printable vacation packing lists online (like ours above), or you can write out your own. There are also a number of apps you can utilize if you prefer something more tech-based. Read about several of these below!

Timing is key here. If you jot things down or review your printed list in advance, it gives you the opportunity to take a second look with a fresh mind. All too often you’ll remember something you didn’t yesterday when your brain was thinking about pizza instead of packing.

If you’re printing a list that’s not trip specific, review it first and immediately cross off items you won’t need. Why bring a winter coat to the beach?

Take items you can grab at your destination off the list.

If you’re planning to travel with only a carry-on, this tip is especially important as it will save space (at least for your outgoing journey!).

Most times when traveling, your hotel will provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, etc.; why waste space packing them? If you’re a little picky about your toiletries or you’re not staying at a hotel, you’ll probably still encounter a drugstore where you can buy anything you might need.

Purchase travel-sized containers or toiletries if you plan on bringing your own.

Remember regulations for the amount of liquids you can bring in a carry-on for a flight. You’ll want travel-sized containers if you plan on carrying liquids this way.

Even if you’re flying with a checked bag and are allowed more liquids, do you really need that 16oz bottle of shampoo for a weeklong trip? Cutting it will save you room for other essential items.

Choose the right luggage.

Luggage Choice

Yes, different airlines have different restrictions on sizes for carry-ons and checked bags but stick to some general guidelines and you should be safe.

For carry-ons, you’re generally accepted at/under max linear dimensions of 155cm/45in. For checked bags, you’re generally safe under 158cm/62in max linear dimensions. However, be sure to check the airline you’re flying with prior to packing, as some can be stingy!

You also want to seriously consider the type of bag you enjoy traveling with – shoulder bag , backpack , roller bag, hard shell , soft shell, etc. There are definitely loads of options so just remember, your bag shouldn’t stress you out, it should make traveling easier.

Hot Tip:  We’ve done tons of research on this topic so don’t miss our articles on the best carry-on bags and the best checked luggage bags for any type of traveler.

Essentials first.

Gather your most important items first. This includes all travel documents such as your passport, ID/driver’s license, boarding passes, hotel reservations, etc. This also includes anything you’ll seriously regret forgetting and can’t purchase while traveling: wallet , credit cards , camera , cell phone, etc.

This being said, there are a number of apps that can assist with itinerary management and decrease the number of printed documents you’ll need to carry. See our list of helpful packing apps at the end of this post.

Choose an appropriately sized suitcase.

If you only have 1 suitcase, then you’re set. If you’ve got more options, attempt to use the smaller one – most people tend to overpack when their suitcase is too large for their trip. You don’t really need an extra sweater, 2 more t-shirts, and another pair of boots just because they fit! Plus, your baggage will be a lot easier to handle if it’s smaller and lighter, which will cut your stress level significantly.

Lay everything out.

Lay out Clothes

Laying all of your items out allows you to plan outfits and account for your days/nights away. When everything’s laid out, you can clearly see how much you’re bringing and spot missing items easier. This also includes shoes, accessories, toiletries, etc.

Dividing items into sections based on where they’ll be packed is also helpful.

Lastly, don’t forget to lay out your plane/travel day outfit and consider it with your other pieces.

Pick simple mix-and-match pieces to prevent overpacking.

In general, choose simple tops and bottoms that can be mixed and matched to make multiple outfits. Did you know that just 3 bottoms (pants, shorts, skirt, etc.), 4 tops (tee, tank, etc.), and 2 outer layers (sweater, coat, or cardigan) can make up to 24 different outfits??

Depending on the reason for your trip, you might need to pack a special item that can only be worn once (suit, bridesmaid dress, etc.), but try to keep these to a minimum! This step is key if you’re pressed for space.

PUT STUFF BACK!

Once you’ve laid out all your items, really consider the number of days you’ll be on your trip. Chances are you could stand to put a few things back in the closet in order to pack more efficiently. Remember, no one wants to pay a fee for overweight baggage or lug around extra clothes for no reason!

Pack it up.

You never thought we’d actually get to this step, did you? There are a number of recommended packing tips when it comes to getting everything neatly in the suitcase. This can be overwhelming, but if you pick up the right habits packing will seem much less stressful.

Check, double-check, and triple-check your essentials.

Put a checkmark next to each item you’ve packed and DON’T TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR BAG. If you’re not ready to pack an item, do NOT check the box! That’s exactly how you leave your phone at home on the charger next to your bed. “But the box was checked!!!” you’ll say…

(Note: this rule actually goes for everything, not just essentials.)

If you’re notorious for leaving essentials at home, print an extra travel checklist just for those items and tape it to your front door the night before you leave. Make a promise that you can’t walk out without reviewing the list one final time.

Fold, Interfold, Bundle, or Roll?

Fold or roll

By now you’ve probably heard that old-fashioned folding isn’t the best method to use when it comes to packing, especially in tight cases. If you have the room to spare, virtually any of these methods will do.

Interfolding involves layering clothes on top of each other in a top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top format, then interweaving them as you fold them together. If you fold the items in accordance with the size of your suitcase, you’re left with a neat little bundle that will fit right in. Additionally, this style of folding will leave your clothing virtually wrinkle-free.

Bundle packing is very similar to interfolding, but you are tightly folding or wrapping your clothing items around a soft core (like a dopp kit , stack of underwear, cloth zippered jewelry bag , etc.). Bundle packing is also said to reduce wrinkles and save space.

Many people also recommend rolling when packing your clothes – at least for softer items and jeans. Again, this method tends to save room and reduce creasing in the process.

If none of the above methods are doing the trick and you don’t have the option of a hanging garment bag , it may be beneficial to learn the proper way to fold nicer items (like a dress shirt or suit coat ) for the best results.

Pack liquids in secure bags.

Toiletries that can leak will leak. These should be placed in a plastic zippered bag or another secure bag of your choosing. Some travelers even encourage cutting small squares of plastic wrap to cover the opening between bottles and their lids in attempts to prevent further seepage.

Utilize shoe space when you can.

Rolled-up socks, belts, gloves, stocking caps, and other small items can easily fit into shoes (as long as they’re relatively clean and not smelly!). This also helps the shoe hold its shape throughout your travels. Rolled-up belts can also be used to keep a shirt collar stiff if needed.

Prevent dirty shoes from soiling clothes.

Pack them in a separate space or utilize plastic bags/shower caps to cover the bottoms and prevent dirtying the rest of your clothing. Have a delicate pair of dress shoes or heels? Pack them in their own bags if possible, or clean the bottoms and wrap with a durable garment.

Toss a dryer sheet into your suitcase to keep things smelling fresh.

While you’re at it, grab a stain pen or stain wipes for your carry-on. If you happen to spill on one of the only tops you’ve brought and don’t have laundry facilities, you’re cutting your number of outfits drastically. If you know you’ll have laundry facilities or need to wash your clothes by hand, you can purchase individual detergent packets.

Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on.

Change of clothes

By packing a change of clothes and undergarments in your carry-on , you’re covered for at least a day if your baggage gets delayed or lost. Some travelers may want to pack an extra pair of shoes just in case.

Similarly, if you’re heading to a beach locale, pack a swimsuit and sandals . If you have to wait to check into your hotel, you can head to the pool while the concierge keeps your luggage.

Keep expensive/irreplaceable items on your person.

As a general rule of thumb, you should leave irreplaceable items at home. This includes objects such as expensive jewelry and heirlooms. If you must travel with them, these items should be kept with you at all times. Do not trust them to be safe when placed in checked baggage; if your suitcase is lost, delayed, or stolen, you’re out of luck.

Similarly, if you must travel with official documents such as birth certificates or social security cards, check to see if a certified copy will suffice. Or maybe take a photo on your phone for less hassle. Otherwise, the same rule applies to these irreplaceable documents.

Follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule for liquids in carry-on baggage.

3 – Travelers may carry liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in containers of 3.4oz (100ml) or smaller.

1 – These items must fit into 1 clear plastic quart-sized bag.

1 – Only 1 bag per passenger is allowed.

Remove this bag from your carry-on and place it separately in the screening bin. This is meant to slightly expedite passing through security .

Packpoint

The following apps can be ultra helpful for those who prefer a mobile device to the standard pen and paper methods.

Evernote: While Evernote isn’t technically travel-oriented, it’s all about lists and can be a big help for packing. With Evernote, you can sync your packing list across all your devices, making it easy to keep track of things no matter where you are…even out at the store buying items from your list!

Evernote also enables sharing notes with others, which is especially helpful for group trips. Need reminders? No problem, you can set alerts in Evernote to keep you on top of your game.

Packing Pro: This app is everything you ever wanted if you’re a list maker, and everything you didn’t know you needed if you’re a forgetful person. Packing Pro helps travelers get organized via packing lists. From templates and suggestions to customizable designs, Packing Pro has options for every type of traveler. Users are allowed an unlimited number of packing lists of an unlimited length, and you can even add images, alerts, and mark “need to buy” items.

It also has iCloud support and the ability to share your lists via email, AirDrop, Dropbox, etc. You can also export and edit your lists with Excel, Numbers, or Google Docs. If you’re the type that physically needs to cross things off, you can send directly to a printer too.

The Expert List-Making Assistant is a cool feature if you’re low-maintenance: it will take your parameters (number of people, destination, weather, etc.) and automatically create lists for you.

PackPoint: PackPoint’s purpose is to take the guesswork out of packing. The app pretty much tells you what to pack based on how long you’re traveling, where you’re going, the weather when you get there, and any activities you have planned (chosen from a pre-defined list in the app). With PackPoint Premium, users can connect to TripIt, share their lists across devices, and add customizable packing items/activities.

Travel List: Travel List seems to have fewer bells and whistles. You can do many of the same things as with Packing Pro and PackPoint: create customizable packing lists, sync across your devices, share with other people, and create alerts/reminders. One nice component is their calendar view, which gives a different type of visualization that some people really prefer. And this one is compatible with Apple Watch, which can be a huge organizational perk.

Lists To Do: This app keeps things simple for general to-do lists and is super easy to use. See your list’s percentage progress for a clear visual on how much you have left to do/pack before jetting off and set yourself reminders and share lists with your travel companions.

Tripit

The following apps are helpful for keeping all your travel information in one place. From flight itineraries to hotel confirmation, event tickets to dinner reservations, they’ve got you covered. Plus, this means fewer printed travel documents you need to worry about carrying with you.

Google Trips: In a nutshell, Google Trips seamlessly integrates reservations (flights, hotels, rental cars, etc.) from your Gmail and creates a specific “trip” in the app. These trips are like folders of information including some basic categories like Reservations, Things to Do, Saved Places, Day Plans, Food & Drink, Getting Around, and Need to Know.

It also provides opportunities for travel inspiration, traveler reviews, dining/drink options, and encyclopedic information on several hundred top cities and attractions around the globe.

Also good to note: when you download your trip, everything is available offline in case you’re stuck without WiFi or data.

Kayak Trips: Part of Kayak’s main app includes a platform called Trips, which acts as an itinerary management app to keep all your pertinent travel information together. With Trips, you can forward your booking confirmations to [email protected] , where your itinerary is managed for you in a nice timeline format with maps and important info all on one screen.

Kayak Trips gives you the ability to send other people access to your travel plans through sharing options, link to your calendar app for planning consistency, and receive SMS and email flight alerts.

TripIt: TripIt is one of the most popular travel organization apps on the market. The app automatically imports flight, hotel, rental car, and other booking confirmations ( concert tickets from StubHub, dinner reservations from OpenTable, etc.) from your e-mail. If you don’t appreciate the e-mail scan, you can always forward your emails to [email protected] or manually input all the information into the system.

TripIt then creates an itinerary in an easy-to-read format, including space for directions between airports, rental car pickup, and hotel details. TripIt also allows for calendar syncing and makes it easy to send your travel info to family/friends by sharing via text, Evernote, LinkedIn, Slack, or WhatsApp.

With TripIt Pro, users get real-time flight alerts, help to find alternative flights, an airline seat tracker for better seats, reward program points tracking, and interactive airport maps.

In this section, we list some steps you might forget to take when you’re in a hurry to leave for vacation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to fold or roll clothes in a suitcase.

Whether it’s better to fold or roll clothes for your suitcase may depend on a number of things. If you’ve no concern about saving space, folding could be just fine. However, if you’re trying to fit a lot of clothes into a small bag, there’s no shortage of youtube videos out there which prove rolling clothes can help with this task.

Additionally, interfolding and bundling are other techniques that could be helpful space savers. However, to save the most space, vacuum bags will be your best bet – just keep in mind your weight limit when packing a lot of things into one case!

Do packing cubes really save space?

Packing cubes don’t necessarily save space but they definitely help you stay organized when packing.

They can also help by keeping items separated — who wants smelly gym clothes next to their fancy dinner outfits?

How do I maximize space in my luggage?

To maximize space when packing, try using these methods for your contents: roll, bundle, or interfold (explanations above). Each has its own special technique but all can help you save space and fit more into your luggage of choice.

Another quick space-saving tip? Utilize typically unused space. For example, pack socks or belts inside your shoes.

How to I pack clothes without wrinkling them?

Here are a few quick tips to decrease wrinkling when packing your clothes into a suitcase: iron first, use a roll or interfold method, pack wrinkle-prone items in garment bags or utilize tissue paper between folds and layers, and/or choose fabrics that are less likely to wrinkle in the first place (wool, Tencel, knit, cashmere, polyester, nylon, spandex).

How should I pack toiletries in my suitcase?

When packing toiletries, you’ll want to be sure they’re kept separate from your clothes in a special bag or case. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy — a Ziplock baggie will do — but this will prevent the leaking of liquid onto your clothing items.

Additionally, you can place a small piece of cling-wrap between the bottles and lids of your liquids to prevent leakage.

If you’re bringing them in your carry-on, you’ll want to be sure you’re adhering to the 3-1-1 rule (use 3 oz containers max, in 1 quart-sized bag, with one bag per traveler) in order to pass easily through security.

Should I pack valuable items in my suitcase?

Always keep valuable items on your person while traveling. This includes identification cards, passports, visas, money, credit cards, jewelry, important medications, etc.

Packing has been an integral part of travel for centuries. From the early explorers who packed their belongings in trunks to the modern-day traveler with a carry-on suitcase, the art of packing has evolved over time. In the past, packing was a meticulous process that required careful consideration of every item. Today, with the advent of lightweight luggage and travel accessories, packing has become more streamlined and efficient.

The goal of packing is to bring everything you need while minimizing the weight and bulk of your luggage. A well-packed suitcase can make your trip more enjoyable by reducing stress and ensuring you have everything you need at your fingertips. With the right approach and a comprehensive packing list, you can master the art of packing and become a travel pro.

Now that we have explored the background of packing, let’s dive into the ultimate packing list. We will cover everything from choosing the right luggage to packing techniques and essential items for your trip.

When it comes to choosing the right luggage, there are several factors to consider. The size, weight, durability, and functionality of your luggage can make a significant difference in your travel experience. Here are some key points to keep in mind when selecting your luggage:

  • Size: Consider the length of your trip and the amount of stuff you need to bring. A carry-on suitcase is ideal for short trips, while a larger suitcase may be necessary for longer journeys.
  • Weight: Lightweight luggage is essential to avoid exceeding weight limits and to make it easier to maneuver through airports and train stations.
  • Durability: Look for luggage made from durable materials that can withstand the rigors of travel. Hardshell suitcases offer better protection for fragile items.
  • Functionality: Consider features like wheels, handles, and compartments that make it easier to organize and access your belongings.

Once you have chosen the right luggage, it’s time to master the art of packing. Let’s explore some packing techniques that will help you make the most of your available space.

Packing efficiently is all about maximizing space and minimizing wrinkles. Here are some packing techniques that will help you make the most of your available space:

  • Rolling vs. Folding: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and minimize wrinkles. This technique works especially well for t-shirts, jeans, and other casual clothing items.
  • Packing Cubes: Use packing cubes to organize your clothes and accessories. These lightweight organizers help you separate items and make it easier to find what you need.
  • Compression Bags: Compression bags are a game-changer when it comes to maximizing space. These bags allow you to remove excess air, reducing the volume of your clothes and creating more room in your suitcase.
  • Layering: Layering your clothes can help you save space and stay organized. Start with heavier items at the bottom and layer lighter items on top.
  • Shoes and Accessories: Utilize the space inside your shoes by stuffing them with socks or small items. Use small bags or pouches to store accessories like jewelry, belts, and scarves.

By using these packing techniques, you can make the most of your available space and ensure that everything fits neatly in your suitcase. Now, let’s move on to the essential items you should include in your packing list.

When it comes to travel essentials, there are a few items that should always be at the top of your packing list. These items are essential for a smooth and stress-free trip. Here are the must-have travel essentials:

  • Passport and Travel Documents: Your passport is the most important document when traveling internationally. Make sure to pack it in a secure and easily accessible location. Don’t forget to bring any necessary visas, travel insurance documents, and copies of important documents.
  • Money and Credit Cards: Bring enough cash for your trip, as well as a credit card for emergencies. It’s also a good idea to have a small amount of local currency on hand for immediate expenses upon arrival.
  • Travel Adapter: Depending on your destination, you may need a travel adapter to charge your electronic devices. Research the electrical outlets at your destination and pack the appropriate adapter.
  • Portable Charger: A portable charger is a lifesaver when you’re on the go and need to charge your phone or other electronic devices. Make sure to fully charge it before your trip.
  • Medications and First Aid Kit: If you take any prescription medications, make sure to pack enough for the duration of your trip. It’s also a good idea to bring a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.

These travel essentials are the foundation of a well-prepared traveler. Make sure to pack them in a secure and easily accessible location in your luggage. Now, let’s move on to clothing and accessories.

When it comes to packing clothing and accessories, versatility is key. Choose items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Here are some essential clothing items to include in your packing list:

  • Tops: Pack a mix of t-shirts, blouses, and sweaters that can be layered or worn on their own.
  • Bottoms: Include a variety of pants, skirts, and shorts that can be dressed up or down.
  • Dresses: Pack a few dresses that can be worn for both casual and formal occasions.
  • Outerwear: Depending on the weather at your destination, pack a lightweight jacket, a sweater, or a coat.
  • Shoes: Bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes, as well as a dressier pair for evenings or special occasions. Don’t forget to pack socks and any necessary shoe accessories.
  • Accessories: Include accessories like scarves, belts, and jewelry that can add variety to your outfits.

Remember to pack clothing items that are appropriate for the weather and activities at your destination. Layering is key, as it allows you to adjust to changing temperatures. Now, let’s move on to toiletries and personal care items.

Toiletries and personal care items are essential for maintaining hygiene and staying fresh during your trip. Here are some must-have toiletries to include in your packing list:

  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste: Don’t forget to pack a toothbrush and toothpaste for maintaining oral hygiene.

  • Body Wash or Soap: Bring a small bottle of body wash or a bar of soap for showering.
  • Deodorant: Stay fresh throughout your trip by packing your favorite deodorant.
  • Skincare Products: Include your essential skincare products like moisturizer, sunscreen, and lip balm.
  • Haircare Products: If you have specific haircare needs, pack travel-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and styling products.

Remember to pack these toiletries in travel-sized containers to comply with airline regulations. If you’re not sure what size is allowed, check with your airline before your trip. Now, let’s move on to electronics and gadgets.

In today’s digital age, electronics and gadgets have become essential travel companions. Here are some must-have electronics to include in your packing list:

  • Phone and Charger: Your phone is a versatile tool that can be used for navigation, communication, and entertainment. Don’t forget to pack your charger and any necessary cables.
  • Laptop or Tablet: If you need to work or stay connected during your trip, consider bringing a laptop or tablet.
  • Camera: Capture your travel memories with a camera. Whether it’s a DSLR or a smartphone with a high-quality camera, make sure to pack the necessary accessories like memory cards and chargers.
  • Headphones: Block out noise and enjoy your favorite music or podcasts with a pair of headphones.
  • Portable Speaker: If you enjoy listening to music or podcasts with others, consider packing a portable speaker for shared entertainment.

Remember to pack these electronics in a secure and easily accessible location in your luggage. Now, let’s move on to documents and money.

When it comes to documents and money, it’s essential to keep them secure and easily accessible. Here are some key items to include in your packing list:

  • Passport: Your passport is the most important travel document. Make sure to pack it in a secure and easily accessible location.
  • Travel Insurance: If you have travel insurance, make sure to bring the necessary documents and contact information.
  • Visas and ID Cards: If you require a visa for your destination, make sure to pack the necessary documents. Additionally, bring any ID cards that may be required for identification purposes.
  • Cash and Credit Cards: Bring enough cash for your trip, as well as a credit card for emergencies. It’s also a good idea to have a small amount of local currency on hand for immediate expenses upon arrival.
  • Copies of Important Documents: Make copies of your passport, travel insurance, and other important documents. Keep these copies in a separate location from the originals.

By keeping your documents and money organized and secure, you can have peace of mind during your trip. Now, let’s move on to health and safety items.

  • First Aid Kit: Pack a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.

  • Insect Repellent: Depending on your destination, you may need insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other insects.

  • Why Trust T+L

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

No matter what type of trip — or transportation — you’re taking, your personal item just might be the most important bag you’ll ever pack. Since it remains close by for the whole ride, you’ll want to make sure it’s got everything you need, including your absolute essentials like money, cards, I.D., phone, and medication. This is also where you’ll want to pack those comfort extras and anything you’ll want to keep within arm’s reach, like snacks, headphones, lip balm, and a power bank.

Being smart about what you pack in your personal item will not only make your trip smoother, but it can also help to assuage any anxiety when it comes to losing your bags; you’ll know you’ve got all the necessities, plus a few comforts, right at your fingertips, whether you’re stuck on a long layover, on the tarmac, or in traffic. There are a few basics that you should always pack (and you should always consider the size and weight of each item), but the extras are all up to you — though we wouldn’t be doing our due diligence if we didn’t recommend a few things.

Arrive to thrive as comfort during your travels is nothing to put in the backseat. Packing the right items in your personal item can make the journey as fabulous as the destination so you arrive rested, relaxed, and ready — whether you’re coming or going. I always like to make sure I’ve got the basics (and a little beyond) within arm’s reach because, well, why not? If you can be more comfortable, why would you settle for anything less?

Given the unpredictable state of travel timetables, we always suggest packing a water bottle , lest you get stuck on the tracks or runway with no beverage service. Plus, we’re always a lot more comfortable if we aren’t parched. Additionally, prioritize the items you know will upgrade your experience, and toss in a few extras as space and weight allow. For me, being able to exist and sleep in my seat is top on the list. For others, it might be keeping yourself entertained or maintaining your preferred beauty routine. Decide what matters most, and add those things in your personal item first.

Best Compression Socks

Levsox compression socks.

Keep tired, swollen feet at bay with these knee-high compression socks from Levsox. We love that these offer snug support to promote blood circulation without feeling too tight or constricting. Providing gentle compression all the way up to the knee, these are made with a silky-smooth material that won't rub or irritate throughout the day. They also slip on and off easily, so you can change into a different pair at the airport without struggling in a bathroom stall. We're also big fans of the design selection — choose from quirky animal prints, bright tie dye colors, and more.

Best Cozy Socks

Dr. scholl's low cut soothing spa socks.

Traveling can be tough, so we’re big advocates of taking the transit time to do a little pampering. We love keeping a pair of these Dr. Scholl’s Soothing Spa Socks in our personal item so we can treat our feet at a moment’s notice. These ultra-soft socks are infused with vitamin E and lavender to help moisturize your soles and relax your soul . They make a great pick to wear on flights when you want to slip off your shoes (as they look like regular fluffy socks) and can even be worn inside shoes or when padding around a hotel room later. Depending on where you shop, you’ll either get two or three grippy-bottom socks per pack, and a choice of several colors. When you’re back home, toss them in the washing machine to clean and re-fluff.

Best Neck Pillow

Cabeau the neck's evolution s3 (tne) neck pillow.

The Cabeau TNE S3 travel neck pillow fastens around your seat’s headrest and is designed with an extra-high pillow rim and chin strap. This extra attention to stability helps to prevent sore or kinked necks, and the chin strap also works to keep your mouth closed while you snooze. The soft, machine-washable cover is comfortable against sensitive neck and face skin while remaining breathable. We love being able to throw it in the wash and start fresh after a long, grubby trip. This thick memory foam pillow rolls up and fits into a compact carrying case, so it won’t take up all the space inside your personal item either, though it can also be hooked on the outside as well.

Best Blanket

Rumpl nanoloft travel blanket.

Prone to feeling cold on planes, trains, or buses? We’ve all seen a pic or two where an airline has passed out soiled blankets to passengers — even when they are folded and packaged inside plastic. Skip the scandal by packing your own blanket in your personal item. Rumpl’s Nanoloft Travel Blanket is made from 30-denier ripstop, post-consumer recycled polyester and has a down-like fill to keep you cozy. What’s great about this travel blanket is that it rolls up and fits into a carrying case roughly the size of a portable water bottle, making it a cinch to keep on hand. When unfolded, it measures 38 x 52 inches and weighs just 0.7 pounds. We also love the included “cape clip” that holds together two edges of the blanket so you can use your hands without worrying about the blanket slipping down while you’re wearing it, and the clip that lets you hook it on a bag’s strap instead of packing it inside.

Best Sleep Eye Mask

Manta sleep mask.

If you’re truly looking to get some quality sleep while traveling, the Manta Sleep Mask is a must for your personal items. This sleep mask straps around your head with padded eye cups that rest around the edges of your eye area to cover them. We like that this design doesn’t put pressure on the eyes and that we can open and blink our eyes normally with no interference. Plus, it won't wreck your falsies or smudge your eye makeup either. You’ll get a 100 percent light-proof blackout seal, regardless of the time of day and the comfy foam eye cups adjust so you can find the right fit for your face, eyes, and nose.

Best Earplugs

Loop quiet ear plugs for noise reduction.

Stash a pair of these Loop Quiet Earplugs in your personal item so you can grab them whenever you want to turn down the background of your travel environment without completely blocking sounds out. Unlike headphones or noise-masking earphones, these won’t add noise to take it away either. The silicone earplugs reduce sound up to 27 decibels and fit snugly inside your ear — and they look good, too. They are great for when you want to create your own space while still being somewhat cognizant of your surroundings. They’re available in seven colors and come with four ear tip sizes to find the best fit for your ears. Store them in the included keychain carrying case to keep them close by and free of debris when you’re not wearing them.

Best Reusable Water Bottle

Nomader collapsible water bottle.

We love a good packing hack, and this 25-ounce collapsible water bottle from Nomader feels like a sneaky secret we have to spread. The genius water bottle has a soft silicone body that is rigid enough to keep its shape and stand upright even when empty. But, when it’s not in use, it simply rolls up and tucks into the cap, saving tons of space in any bag. It’s dishwasher safe, leak-proof, and has a solid plastic twist cap with a fat flip-top-spout mouthpiece to control water flow and prevent spills. There’s also a plastic grip ring and a strap to fasten the bottom to the cap when tucked away.

Smart and economical organization hacks will give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to fitting everything in your personal item, no sweat. I find that the best approach for organizing the contents of your personal item is to use the Russian doll technique — where you pack several smaller bags with category-specific things and then toss them in your main bag. This way, you’re keeping things you’ll use together or associate together in one place, making it a lot easier to locate and store these things in a larger personal item (and prevents you from having to dig deep for something small that may be hiding in the crevice of a zippered side pocket). It’s also a bonus hack that’ll help you keep track of your belongings as it’s easier to notice when one item of three or five is missing versus one item out of 25.

Best Belt Bag

Westbronco belt bag.

We like the Westbronco Belt Bag for its compact size, gender-neutral style, and well-organized pockets that make it easy to store and find items in a jiffy. Two main zippered compartments are large enough to hold most mobile phones, a passport, travel medicine , cables, earbuds, mini toiletries, snack bars, and more. There’s also a smaller front zippered sleeve where you can stash receipts, credit cards, your license, or notes. It’s great for grabbing and clipping on while you go through security and transportation hubs, or for snatching out of your bag and wearing comfortably during overnight journeys on public transportation. Plus, it’s made from water-resistant fabric, and features a sturdy, quick-release plastic buckle that’s accessible whether you’re wearing it on your waist or as a crossbody.

Best Toiletries Organizer

Dagne dover mila toiletry organizer.

Dagne Dover

The 5.5 x 5.5-inch Dagne Dover Mila Small Toiletry Organizer is the perfect size for packing necessary toiletries into your personal item. We appreciate the cylindrical design, which can be identified quickly by touch among everything in your bag. Plus, it’s easy to pull out thanks to the wide top-grab handle. The customizable interior organization makes it a no-brainer — fill the whole compartment or use the removable dividers to divvy up space into six individual compartments. There’s also a mesh zip pocket and triangle carabiner clip on the interior top lid. The whole thing weighs about six ounces and has an overall interior of 2.7 liters, so it holds a lot without taking up a lot of space. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s made from water-resistant recycled materials and is vegan, too.

Best Tech Organizer

Bagsmart universal travel cable organizer bag.

If you couldn’t tell already, we’re big fans of organization that has organization, especially when space is limited. This tech organizer seemingly has a place for all your gear: there are five open storage slots with a thick elastic band (great for all your cords), five small mesh slip pockets (think memory cards, power connector bases, or even rolls of film), one larger mesh pocket (for a phone or power bank), and two tall pockets with elastic loops. All of this zips up nicely into a 1.4-inch thick, 6.7 x 9.8-inch carrying case that lays relatively flat in your personal item. This particular case comes in five solid colors, each with gold zipper accents and a stylishly textured exterior.

Best Pill Organizer

Amoos pill organizer 2 times a day.

Use this colorful, convenient weekly pill organizer to pack essential supplements and pills in your personal item. The Amoos Pill Organizer 2 Times a Day features seven translucent flip-top containers, each labeled with a different day of the week and featuring an AM and PM compartment. Take stock of interior contents with a glance, and easily differentiate days by each different color. We especially appreciate that each compartment can hold multiple larger-sized pills and that you can remove any of the daily containers and slip one in your pocket. Discretion is the key for some, so we like the nondescriptness here. Plus, it comes with a wristlet loop and has a handy interior mesh slip pocket for holding prescription information or other notes.

Having the right tech and entertainment items on hand while traveling is a simple way to make being in public feel a bit more like home. This can also help us stay connected, no matter how far away we may be.

Keeping these picks in your personal item will limit the number of times you’ll have to get up from your seat, making for a more seamless travel experience, too. There are an endless amount of options out there, so we’re just including the basics — and these are the items I personally reach for most frequently in transit from headphones to portable chargers.

Best Over-ear Headphones

Sennheiser momentum 4 wireless.

After extensive testing by the T+L team, these wireless over-ear headphones from Sennheiser snagged our overall best pick for the most comfortable earphones . We were smitten with the whopping 60-hour battery life — and that it only takes two hours to reach a full charge (or five minutes' charging for four hours) — so we know we can rely on these headphones for the long haul. They are notably lightweight, which makes them ideal for lugging around in your personal item, and we found the ear cups and headband are even comfortable if you’re sporting glasses or earrings. The sound is crisp and clear, and there are a number of built-in features, from active noise-canceling and equalizing to different sound profiles and customizable sound personalization. Plus, they fold flat and fit in a compact carrying case and are compatible with both Android and iOS.

Best Earbuds

Bose quietcomfort ultra earbuds.

As the newest iteration of the beloved Bose QuietComfort earbuds, the Ultra improved upon the second generation pair we already loved by adding more immersive audio so the music moves with you, switching between still and motion modes automatically. Of course, we still appreciate the ANC and spatial awareness filters that block out environmental noise, and that this can also be adjusted to allow background noise to filter through without distracting us from whatever we’ve got playing. You’ll get about six or so hours of battery life, depending on your chosen settings, and they work with iOS or Android, connecting quickly via Bluetooth.

Best Headphone Adapter

Twelve south airfly pro bluetooth transmitter.

If you’ve ever been on a plane faced with wireless headphones or earbuds and a corded headphone jack, this product is a personal item essential. Twelve South Airfly Pro connects wireless headphones to any device with a 3.5-mm jack whether you want to play movies on an older tablet or connect your phone to a rental car’s stereo system instead. Its slim, travel-ready profile easily slips into a bag pocket, tech organizer sleeve, or even on your keyring. One charge gets you up to 25 hours of battery life, and it’ll work within 33 feet of your target device with Android or iOS. Extra points for being able to connect up to two sets of headphones at a time.

Best Power Bank

Anker powercore 13000 portable battery.

This popular portable power bank charger has a compact design that easily slides into slip pockets and pant pockets. You’ll get a 13,000 mAh capacity that will work to charge your cell phone, iPad, or iPod several times — and two USB-A output ports means you can charge more than one item once. This is our go-to charger for those quick pick-me-up charges to get you through the travel day, but isn’t ideal if you’re looking for a heavy-duty brick charger to completely power up multiple devices. Keep in mind you’ll need to pack your own charging cords to use with this product.

Best Phone Mount

Urtry travel phone mount.

With the Urtry Travel Phone Mount, there’s no need to hand-hold your phone for long periods of screen time. The adjustable clamp mount and folding stand design allow this to be set up on flat surfaces or pinched onto the edge of what’s around, whether that’s the tray table in front of you, your suitcase handle, a bar countertop, chair backs, or even the metal adjustment bar of a car headrest. The clamp mount is sturdy, can be affixed to anything 1.5 inches thick or less, and is strong enough to hold up against bumpy rides. Best of all, it folds down into a compact 1.7 x 1.5 x 3.8 inches, making it extremely portable. We love pulling this out for a good series marathon or flick in transit and when we’re waiting at the gate or in a passenger lounge.

Best Charging Cord

Deego usb type c charger cable 15ft long.

The necessity of a long charging cord is not talked about enough. When you’re traveling, having a few extra feet of cord to work with can mean the difference of getting a boost of juice when electrical outlets are scarce or located in inconvenient locations. This Deego 15-ft Long USB-C Charging Cable will give you plenty of slack — and it’ll work with most devices, including the new iPhone 15 — so you can plug in and chill out while your device recharges. In a hurry? This cable is also fast-charge capable, as long as you have your phone’s fast-charge wall adapter. We love that the nylon-wrapped cord is tangle-free, too.

Even a short commute is enough time to show yourself a little love. Along with a few treats to nibble on, I always make sure I’ve packed things like moisturizer, lip balm, and odds and ends to help freshen up after travel; a little face spritz and a quick brush of the teeth can do wonders for refreshing the body and mind.

When it comes to keeping healthy, staying hydrated is a must, along with having a few anti-bacterial wipes (you never know when you’ll come across a suspect surface) and always, always, always, a little bit of sun protection. Again, you’ll want to keep these items to small, travel-friendly sizes so you can get past security efficiently. And while you want to keep your personal item light, you won't regret including a few key wellness travel essentials .

Best Moisturizing Sunscreen

Dermalogica dynamic skin recovery spf 50.

This Dermatologica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 Moisturizer is a 3-in-1 moisturizer that tackles broad-spectrum sun protection and fights dryness and dehydration at the same time. If you forgo everything else from this section, this is one we recommend giving a spot in your personal item, no matter what.  It works on all skin types and has a non-greasy finish that can be worn alone or under makeup. It’s a pricey pick, but it’s worth its weight in gold, especially for frequent travelers who like to sit by the window. And we like this specific one because it feels more like a moisturizer than a heavy sunscreen.

Best Dental Kit

Boka fresh on the go.

Boka Fresh On the Go is a top-notch dental kit that covers all of your bases in three travel-sized products. The plastic toothbrush comes in four colors and features Binchotan-activated charcoal bristles, and we love that you can choose between three 1.3-ounce toothpaste flavors — coco ginger, ela mint, and lemon lavender. Each flavor swaps out fluoride for nano-hydroxyapatite to help strengthen and remineralize your teeth. But the real clincher in this set is the jar of 90-count probiotic mouthwash tablets. Just pop one in your mouth and chew — no extra water needed — to freshen your breath and add some helpful probiotics to your mouth’s busy biome.

Best Lotion

Burt’s bees milk and honey body lotion.

This fast-absorbing body and hand lotion from Burt’s Bees is our go-to for soothing dry skin while traveling. Coconut and grapeseed oils pair up with milk and honey to deliver lasting moisture, and it goes on easily without feeling greasy with a mild odor that won’t cause seatmates to gripe. For travelers who are just as cognizant of what they put on their bodies as what goes in, this lotion is 98 percent natural, one of our favorite things about this brand. And the 2.5-ounce size is ideal for popping inside a small toiletry case inside your personal item, or the bag itself, so it’s close by.

Best Lip Balm

Goop beauty clean nourishing lip balm.

Goop Beauty Clean Nourishing Lip Balm is a lip-saver with its soft and silky moisturizing base containing shea butter, plus coconut, jojoba, argan, sunflower, and castor seed oils. It’s dermatologist-approved, and even has a slight scent that makes it feel extra lush. Presented in a sleek yet casual rose gold tube, this balm looks as good as it makes your lips feel, even if they’re already chapped or dry when you first apply. Go with clear for a low-key look, or snag one of the four sheer tints for a barely-there bump of color.

Best Anti-bacterial Wipes

Wet ones sensitive skin hand and face wipes.

These travel packs of Wet Ones Sensitive Skin Hand and Face Wipes are gentle enough to use on delicate baby’s skin for a quick wipe down while still being effective when used on grubby surfaces. We may be out of the thick of the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean keeping a pack of anti-bacterial wipes in your personal item won’t come in handy now and then (as we’ve all seen how in frequently surfaces in public spaces are cleaned ). We like these because they are hypoallergenic and unscented, and the packaging is resealable, so you can take only what you need and feel confident in placing them back in your bag without having them dry out or leak.

Best Face Mist

Josh rosebrook face mist hydrating spray.

Don’t feel like applying moisturizing face lotion throughout your journey? Spray two pumps of this Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator facial mist to give your skin a little drink. Not only does this non-aerosol spray mean you won’t have to fuss with cleaning your hands before or after moisturizing, but you’ll also be fortifying your skin with botanicals to help reduce water loss and skin irritation. It also works as a base layer amplifier for any serums or creams you put on top, making your products work harder and better. This convenient 3.4-ounce travel size fits easily into a makeup organizer or your bag’s pockets, too.

What is the best way to pack a personal item?

Pack your personal item in a way that keeps everything as accessible as possible so you can limit the number of times you’ll have to physically remove your personal item from wherever it’s being stored during your trip. This can mean grouping like-minded things together (like tech cords and adapters), using a bag with easily identifiable interior compartments, or packing several smaller items inside a single, easily grabbable organizer bag so you won’t have to fish for them. You may also want to consider packing anything you know you’ll frequently access (like earbuds or your phone) in a separate bag that will comfortably fit in your lap or somewhere within easy reach.

Keep in mind that many forms of transportation have rules about what you can bring in a personal item. Always look up any possible restrictions and remember it’s key to keep things travel-sized, not just for passing through places like TSA but to save on the overall available space and weight of this bag as well.

What is the best size for a personal item?

Your personal item should be about the size of a backpack — this way, it’ll almost always fit under the seat in front of you, in a storage compartment above the seat, or on your shoulder or back without issue. Regardless of your mode of travel, be sure to check if you’re even allowed a personal item and, if so, if there are any measurements or sizes you’ll need to follow . Remember not to overpack your personal item — it’s not a carry-on — because you’ll have to schlep it around during transit.

Key Takeaways

  • Use built-in apps like Notes and Files to store important information and offline copies of documents for quick access anytime.
  • Translate foreign text and conversations with your iPhone's text scanner and Translate app.
  • Stay safe by setting up Location Sharing and Emergency SOS, and enable Low Power Mode to help your iPhone's battery last.

The unknown variables that come with traveling can be both exciting and anxiety-inducing, but your iPhone can help you in many ways. Below, I'll list some handy iPhone features I use to help put some of my traveling worries to rest.

1 The Notes App to Keep a Packing Checklist

I often worry that I might forget my fast charger or even my jacket, especially when I'm staying in more than one hotel. To avoid this, I tend to re-pack everything a few times during my trip.

I use the Notes app to keep a handy packing checklist because my iPhone is the one thing I definitely won't accidentally leave behind. Before checking out of a hotel, I'll review the list on my iPhone to ensure I have everything.

To start a checklist in Notes , tap the checklist icon (next to Aa ) while typing in a note. Any time you want to add a new item to the list, tap Return on your iPhone's keyboard.

Tap the circle next to your listed item, and a checkmark will appear. Tap again to uncheck it so you can reuse the list again.

When organizing your items into different categories, double-tap the category title to highlight it, then tap the Aa icon to access and apply either the Heading or Subheading style.

2 The Files App to Store Copies of Documents

While Wi-Fi is widely available, and I do buy data roaming packages when I travel, phone signals can sometimes be unreliable. So, I find it more reassuring to have an offline copy of tickets and booking receipts in case I can't access my emails to retrieve those important files.

I usually use my Mac when going through emails, and I AirDrop those PDF files from my Mac to my iPhone . To access these files, all I need to do is launch the Files app and navigate to On My iPhone > Downloads .

In some cases, if I have a physical copy of a receipt or voucher, I scan a copy of it in the Notes app instead.

3 Built-In Text Scanner to Translate Menus and Signs

When traveling to a country's less touristy cities and I don't know the native language, it can feel intimidating because things like food menus, signs, and notices are often written in words I don't understand.

Thankfully, iOS has a feature that helps me scan and translate text on my iPhone . Your iPhone's text scanner works while you're pointing the camera at the text and also when you've taken a picture or screenshot of it.

4 The Translate App to Converse With Locals

Language barrier is a common issue when you're traveling. Not all situations allow visitors and locals to communicate solely with body language and limited vocabulary, and typing everything to translate takes too long.

In such cases, I find Apple's Translate app immensely helpful. In Translate , go to the Conversation tab and select each person's preferred language in the text bubbles. Then, tap the microphone icon every time one of you speaks. The app will automatically capture the language spoken and translate it accordingly.

As an extra tip, if you're using an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max running iOS 17.2 or later, you can use the Action button to translate spoken words as well.

5 Low Power Mode to Save My iPhone's Battery

Although I include a power bank in my packing checklist, I always prefer to save my iPhone's battery as much as possible. This way, I can rest assured that my device will always have power and won't run out of battery in critical situations like when I need to call a ride at night to return to my hotel or when I need to use Google Maps to navigate an unfamiliar city.

One easy setting that saves battery life on my iPhone is Low Power Mode. It automatically reduces my iPhone's screen brightness and visual effects, blocks email pushing, and more so I can get more juice out of my iPhone's battery. To use it, go to Settings > Battery and toggle on Low Power Mode .

6 Location Sharing to Keep Loved Ones Updated

As a young woman, when I travel solo to a new city, I periodically share my location with trusted friends and family. A simple update on where I am at certain points of the day provides reassurance and a sense of security to both me and my loved ones.

There are several ways to share your location on an iPhone . I usually share my location via iMessage or WhatsApp, where I'll also type a quick message about what I've been to along with a snapshot of a nice meal I just had.

7 Emergency SOS and Medical ID in Case of Accidents

Last but not least, I have set up Emergency SOS and Medical ID on my iPhone to be extra safe during a trip.

Knock on wood, if I find myself in a dangerous situation and need to call and share my location with local emergency services, I can simply press the Side or Volume button to do so. Also, if emergency responders require my medical information, they can access it on my iPhone via Medical ID.

To set up Emergency SOS, go to Settings > Emergency SOS , toggle on Call with Hold and Release and Call with 3 Button Presses . I also recommend enabling Call Quietly so you can call emergency services discreetly.

If you're using an iPhone 14 or later, you also have the option to enable Call After Severe Crash . Crash Detection senses if you have been in a car crash. If you're incapacitated and unable to respond to the on-screen check-in, your iPhone will proceed to call emergency services automatically.

After turning on Emergency SOS in Settings, you can head to the Health app to set up Medical ID on your iPhone . I also use a few third-party apps to make my travels as safe as possible .

It's always good to be well-prepared for an upcoming trip. Although hiccups are not entirely avoidable, utilizing these iPhone features has helped me feel more at ease during my trips. I'm truly ready to relax, explore different cultures, and enjoy my well-deserved break.
