Domaso – Touring the towns of Lake Como

Domaso on Lake Como is one of the places we visit regularly.  The beautiful harbor, a good choice of eating places, a bike shop and great gelateria are the things that keep us coming back.

This time though, we wondered a little deeper into the town, taking small alleys and streets as we came across them and aiming for some of the landmarks we’ve often seen but never gone in:

What we found in Domaso on Lake Como

We somewhat expect the elaborate when we go inside an Italian church; floor to ceiling paintings, statues galore, amazing stained-glass windows and beautiful gilded and painted ceilings.  We were not disappointed, there was scarcely a patch of wall or ceiling that wasn’t adorned with something.  My favourite…the fake window gallery painted on the ceiling.

Villa Camilla

This is a municipal building so not for touring, however the building itself and the view through it to the lake are beautiful.  We did spot a sign for an art exhibit and have found out too that they have music nights, so we’re hopeful to go inside on one of those occasions.  The grounds are worth a wonder through as they have an unusual stone ‘grotto’ you can walk around.

Wandering the alleys of Domaso

When we got off the main road, we found smaller streets and alleys, coloured houses and a maze of stairs and alleys winding around the local homes.  We even spotted a poster of Marcello Mastroianni from ‘La Dolce Vita’ – advertising an optician’s shop.  It doesn’t get much more Italian than that.  Iconic.

Domaso has a pebble beach with a tree lined street above and the old harbor – definitely worth a walk out on the wall for the amazing views of the lake and back at the town.

The food in Domaso

On the lake front there are several other eateries that we have tried and enjoyed.   Ristorante da Mario – the lady who runs this place is really friendly, loves to talk and gives out the specials of the day as if it’s a forgone conclusion (it’s difficult to refuse, but as it goes the lake fish was a good choice – “caught this morning, you want it with potatoes or rice”). Enoteca Del Porto is super quaint and the lady who runs the front of house is adorable.  There’s a huge wine selection and a few local dishes to choose from.  When we went it was a cold day and the ambiance inside was like being in somebodies home; cosy, warm and friendly.

Literal translation – In the small barrel, there is the good wine (UK saying – good things come in small packages).  One of the things I love about living and eating out in Italy is the wine.  Not just the fact that Italian wine is some of the best in the world, but in a restaurant you have more than the usual choice of a glass or a bottle.  It’s possible to order the house wine by the quarter, half or full litre, which comes in a carafe.  This is not the equivalent of a glass of house wine from a UK restaurant.  This wine is really good!  And a fraction of the price of a bottle…bonus.

Ristorante, Trattoria, Osteria...what's the difference?

There are ristorante, trattoria, osteria, enoteca and even crotto to name a few.  Each of them in the past meant a specific type of eating place; large and official service, smaller and more casual, family run– but we’ve found that the name doesn’t always match the original meanings.  This is what we have found in our (quite extensive and ever increasing) experience:

Trattoria / Osteria – These are smaller establishments, usually tucked away in a small street.  The menus are smaller and tend to be local dishes.  These are our favourite places to eat and we will always try to seek one out.  They always feel more personal, less touristy and more unique.

Enoteca – this is actually a place for wine which will often do cold plates (meat and cheese typical of the area).  Enoteca del Porto in Domaso also sells local hot dishes…an added bonus.

Crotto – I mention this last as it’s quite typical of the area we are in (as mentioned in our original  Lake Como post ).  A crotto serves traditional food, young wine poured from the barrel and meats and cheeses stored in the naturally cool caves of the establishments.  Definitely worth a visit if you find one.

Where next on our tour of Lake Como

We’re off to our most local town, Gravedona.  We’ve been there a lot, but still haven’t wondered around the back streets or visited their beautiful church and villa.

We’ve also been a little further afield to the Valtellina valley.  We’re very familiar with the wine from this region and that was our main reason for going.  What else did we find?….

Italy This Way review: Domaso is a small town with not a great deal to see, but is pleasant and well placed for exploring the northern part of Lake Como. There are not many towns of great interest to tourists in this part of Lake Como, and if you are travelling slowly around the lake we suggest that Domaso is probably the best town to spend a night in the north of the lake.

Domaso is quite different in character when compared with the famous towns around Lake Como a short distane to the south, such as Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio. The town is quieter, and more of a town where people go about their everyday business without hundreds of tourists in every direction.

There are two parts to Domaso: the area along the lake and a small historic centre. Your visit will mostly consist of a walk along the side of Lake Como. The houses here are attractive, and some painted in bright colours. It is the views of the town here and the viewsa across the lake to the mountains that is the principal attraction in the town.

It is also here that you will find most of the restaurants in Domaso: there are several to choose from including a restaurant right on the edge of the lake (restaurant Ajo) where we had a good meal while watching the ducks below, which was very pleasant!

In the old town there are some narrow streets to explore, a few more restaurants and several shops. The church is the main historical monument here and is dominated by its tall belltower.

Domaso is one of the ferry terminals on Lake Como, so useful if you are planning to explore by boat. You can also rent boats in the harbour if you prefer to explore yourself.

Attractions nearby

To the west of Domaso at Gravedona the Church of Santa Maria del Tiglio is a charming 12th century church on the edge of Lake Como where you an see medieval frescoes. The other side of the lake from here, the abbey at Piona is also from the 12th centuy and in a lovely lakeside setting.

North-east of here, just beyond the top of Lake Como there is another lake called the Lago di Mezzola - the two lakes are separated by the Natural Reserve Pian di Spagna.

Located on the western shore of Lake Como, at the mouth of the Livo torrent and at the foot of Sasso Pelo, the picturesque town of Domaso has kept the characteristics of its past history intact through the years. Of Roman origin and crossed by Via Regina, the ancient road that connected Como to Rezia (now Switzerland) passing through Valchiavenna, Domaso developed into a small fishing village, with brightly coloured houses leaning against each other, porticoes and arches. An urban structure still visible today, with steep cobbled streets called “strecc” that from the lakeside porticoes go up to the top of the mountain where you can admire the devotional Renaissance frescoes and family coats of arms painted on the facades of the houses. Over the years, the town went from being an ancient fishing village to one of the liveliest tourist places in  the Alto Lario, full of campsites, residences, restaurants, clubs and modern sports facilities, which have made it internationally famous. Enjoying a particularly mild climate and constantly ventilated by the Breva wind, it is considered a paradise for sailors and surfers. Domaso is a perfect holiday destination for those who love water sports and outdoor activities. There are numerous walking paths and mountain bike trails in the surrounding woods and the long and beautiful beach offers the opportunity for stunning walks along the shore or relaxing under the sun. During the summer season, the resort comes alive with events and festivals, the perfect way to end a day spent in the water or in the mountains. Domaso is also the main wine producing area of the Alto Lario, appreciated since Roman times. The grapes are harvested in the vineyards that rise on terraces in the hamlets of Pozzolo and Gaggio.   From an artistic point of view, the parish church of San Bartolomeo, built in the 13th century but renovated in the late Baroque period is definitely worth visiting. It houses numerous art works, including 18th century frescoes by Ligari, a Pietà from the school of Rodari, a painting depicting the Madonna and Child by Procaccini and the chapel commissioned by Luigi Panizza, governor of Forte di Fuentes. The Church of San Giovanni Battista (St John the Baptist) was originally part of a lost convent that has now been deconsecrated, and features a 13th century bell tower and frescoes on the life of St John the Baptist. On the lakeside there are some villas that bear witness to the historical importance of Domaso. The 17th century Villa Camilla, built by the noble Ghezzi family and now the Town Hall, has a neoclassical structure with frescoed ceilings and a beautiful park with artificial caves in tuff and many varieties of camellias, cedars and conifers. Villa Miani, erected at the beginning of the 19th century once belonged to General Miani, conqueror of Libya.

The Antico Cantinone di Domaso

The celler, Antico Cantinone di Domaso, was built in 1600 and renovated in 1850. It was formerly used as a wine-growers’ cooperative of Domaso. After years of neglect, the celler was given new life as a winery producing Spumante Domasino and as a tasting location in order to propose a sensory journey through the flavors of Domaso and Lake Como.

In this extraordinary mid-1600s location,  the Sorsasso Farm Holding offers to all wine lovers the possibility to taste its products and various specialties from Lake Como in this unique premises in the center of the ancient village of Domaso. Domaso and its splendid beaches

Domaso is located in the so called “Alto Lago” , the most northern part of Lake Como. Domaso is an ancient town of Roman origins. The old village is located along the axis of the the Roman Regina Road. The facades of the houses are embellished with votive frescoes, stone portals and noble coats of arms. Steep lanes lead to the arcaded houses on the lake.  For ages Domaso has maintained an economy based mainly on fishing before becoming an important tourist resort.  Domaso is known for its beautiful beaches and the presence of constant winds, makes it a true paradise for lovers of windsurfing and other water sports. A  splendid cycle-pedestrian path directly on the lake connects Domaso with the northern tip Lake Como, while to the south you can reach Gravedona .

Description

From the Domaso’s boat dock, cross the main road and continue to the right under the splendid arcades until you arrive in Piazza Ghislanzoni. Here you enter the historical centre along the “Contrada” , the name the inhabitants of Domaso have always given to the “Antica Strada Regina,” the ancient Roman road that connected Milan and Como to the Alpine passes.

You reach Piazza della Chiesa and the San Bartolomeo church which conserves rich baroque decorations and art works (usually open). Follow Via Roma in order to arrive in Piazza Trento where the church of Sant’Antonio stands. You continue along via Roma and you arrive at the gates on the back side of Villa Camilla . Enter the small public park and then walk to the front of the villa that faces the lake.

Cross the main road and proceed to the left. You reach Piazza della Madonnina where the tourist office stands. Just past the bridge over the river Livo, on the right,there is a street that leads down to the beach. The beach of Domaso is one of the longest beaches of the lake . Here you will find many water sport facilities such as sailing and wind surfing. From here you can follow the splendid cycle-footpath that leads along the lake from Domaso to Sorico or to the south to Gravedona

We highly recommend the scenic walk from the historic centre of Domaso to the village Pozzolo (about 20 minutes on an easy muletrack). Here stands the small church of the Madonna delle Grazie from where you have a spectacular view of the lake.

By public transport

Boat tickets can be bought on-line www.navigazionelaghi.it or  at the Navigazione ticket office at Menaggio During the tourist season there are several boats per day from Menaggio to Domaso. On the way they touch Varenna, Bellano, Pianello del Lario, Dongo and Gravedona.  Off season Domaso can only be reached by hydrofoil.
