The nine islands that make up the Azores mark the westernmost boundary of Europe.
Just a 4-hour flight from the UK, this nature-rich Portuguese archipelago spans the Mid-Atlantic Ridge around 900 miles west of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, nestled in the heart of the ocean.
The islands' volcanic origins are clear – deep craters or calderas dominate the landscape, making holidays here a walker’s paradise .
Although summers are not stifling, the temperature averages an exceptionally pleasant 23°C. Due to the year-round sub-tropical climate and volcanic soil, the islands are covered in lush, green vegetation and vibrant flowers.
An Azores holiday to any of the islands in the archipelago invites you to its own unique cultural heritage. But they all share unspoilt nature and a traditional way of life. Travel between each island is easy, with regular short flights and ferry journeys connecting nearby neighbours.
Car hire is available everywhere and roads are open, traffic-free and boast spectacular countryside or ocean views, making an island-hopping fly-drive holiday the perfect way to explore three or more of the islands.
Islands of the Azores
Discover São Miguel , the ‘green island’ with its landscape packed with volcanic lakes, rugged coastlines and steaming thermal hot springs.
Terciera with its UNESCO World Heritage Site and historic city, Angra do Heroismo.
Pico , the 'black island' is dominated by its impressive mountain and known for its whaling history and excellent whale and dolphin spotting opportunities. A favourite island of our travel specialist Emma, Pico makes an excellent day trip from nearby Faial Island.
Santa Maria , the most temperate island and Christopher Columbus’ first stop on his voyage back from discovering the New World.
If you are not sure which Azores island to go on holiday to , why not call our travel specialists to discuss.
Whale Watching on an Azores Holiday
The Azores sit on the migration route of many species of cetacean, making it one of the best places in the world for whale watching (although there are many other sights and sounds ). For the best opportunity to see humpback or blue whales, visit between February and April when they are migrating through the islands.
Between May and August, the countryside comes alive with colour, as the famous hydrangeas bloom in bold pinks and blues - Ideal for a romantic getaway .

The Azores holiday FAQs
Make the most of your azores holiday.
The Azores is brimming with beauty and island adventures, with its wealth of cultural diversity. São Miguel is swathed in emerald forests as well as volcanic remnants. Terceira is slightly smaller, but makes up for it with its countless festivals.
Where is the best place to stay in the Azores?
São Miguel is part of the eastern group of the Azores and is the largest of the nine archipelago islands. It is surrounded by lush vegetation, turquoise lagoons and breathtaking mountains, waterfalls and volcanic landscapes. Its capital, Ponta Delgada, displays an eclectic mix of the island’s past that has subtly merged with contemporary life. The ancient city gates welcome you to white-washed houses, ornate churches, forts and an array of delightful shops and restaurants. Visiting the old town, Praca de Gonalo Velho, is a must, with its famous 16th Century baroque church of St Sebastian, which has the tallest clock tower in Ponta Delgada.
Terceira, otherwise known as the 'purple island' due to the flourishing lilac hydrangeas growing all over the island, is the third largest of the archipelago islands and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is recognised for its forests, greenery and vivid houses. The island offers an array of incredible hikes, with the best view found at Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano with breathtaking viewpoints across the historic city of Angra do Heroismo. Discover the old colonial city of Angra with its baroque architecture, shops, galleries and restaurants, which serve up mouthwatering Portuguese delights. The most popular being the Cake Dona Amelia, a delicate pastry filled with custard, raisins and cider.
What are the best things to do in São Miguel?
- Visit Terra Nostra Park, botanical gardens and thermal pools. Make sure you don’t wear your best swimsuit though, as the orange mineral water does not wash out.
- Sip tea at Gorreana, Sao Miguel’s famous tea estate.
- Take a trip to Furna, to explore the vivacious volcanic mud pools and geothermal springs.
- Explore the ancient capital, Ponta Delgado, and sample traditional Portuguese delicacies at local market stalls.
- Spend a day at Vila Franca Islet, a small circular bay with calm waters – ideal for swimming with children, or take a boat trip whale watching.

Introduction, a year round destination, frequently asked questions, about the climate, about the food, flight information.
Sunvil discovered the Azores in 1990 and since then we have been one of the leading promoters of responsible tourism to this, one of the last paradises on earth. We invite you to step into the past and discover the beauty and tranquillity of these fascinating islands.
The Azores form an enchanting archipelago of nine emerald green islands set in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal (1,500km) and North America (3,900km). At one time thought to be part of the legendary lost continent of Atlantis, the islands were discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese navigators en route to the New World and became the link between Europe and the Americas. In fact, they belong to Portugal and are part of Europe.
The Azores are accessible and rewarding all year round due to their favourable climate.
April is a peaceful time on all islands and the month for Azaleas, especially in Furnas (Sao Miguel). The area around Furnas Lake is wonderful at this time of year. May sees the second largest religious festival in Portugal take place in Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel). The ‘Festas de Santo Cristo dos Milagres’ (Christ of Miracles) takes place between 02-09 May and includes many cultural events, celebrations and a street procession through the capital city.
A profusion of hydrangeas can be seen throughout the archipelago during early summer (Jun-Jul) creating colourful natural hedges along roadsides and small pastures. Flores, literally named the island of flowers, is a perfect example and best seen in July when the hydrangeas are in full bloom.
August is the month of festivals across the nine Azorean islands. Two of the main festivities take place on the central islands of Pico and Faial. Sea Week on Faial brings the island to life with musical performances and a number of regattas (August).
Whaler’s Week (August) on Pico pays homage to those who worked within the whaling industry and includes musical performances and celebrations. Other festivals include the musical ‘Festival of the Sea’ on Santa Maria (3rd week of August), and the festival of Praia Vitoria on Terceira (August).
July-September can also be a lovely time to visit the Azorean beaches (weather dependent). The Azores is not a traditional beach destination with most beaches made of volcanic black sand and shingle. In addition to the small beaches and coves, all of the nine Azorean islands have a host of natural rock pools, filled with ocean water and heated by the sun. Swimming in these pools whatever the weather is a delight.
One of the best ways to explore this mid-Atlantic paradise is on foot, and each island offers a variety of marked trails to suit all abilities and interests. Walking can be enjoyed all year round due to the mild temperatures of the archipelago but, we love walking during the autumn months when the landscape is ever-changing in colour and the trees turning from lush greens to reds, oranges and yellows.
We operate our own guided walking holidays on Sao Miguel. We also offer individual guided walks on Santa Maria and Pico. We feel that these walks are the most scenic routes that the islands have to offer. Our walks can also be incorporated into a tailor-made holiday, designed to meet individual requirements.
The autumn months of September and October play host to a variety of festivals including the Holy Ghost festivities (April-September). October is also the peak of the bird watching season on the island of Corvo, when North American vagrants pass by.
During the winter months, with average temperatures of 14°C – much warmer if you’re sitting in the sun, unsettled weather means that the islands do not attract a large number of tourists. This is the time to see the real Azores, meet local residents and truly experience their way of life.
Christmas is a relatively low key and traditional affair. This is a religious community and nativity scenes are prevalent in Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel) and many towns and villages throughout the islands. On New Year’s Eve in Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel), there is a popular firework display in the main square with brass bands, sometimes rock bands, and free food and drink dispersed amongst the crowds. Similar celebrations, on a lesser scale, can be enjoyed in Angra do Heroismo (Terceira), Horta (Faial) and many smaller towns and villages across the archipelago.
In February (04-12 February) Carnival is celebrated throughout the islands. In Ponta Delgada, grand balls are held and a matinee masquerade ball takes place on the 12th February (Sunvil Discovery can pre-book tickets for clients wishing to attend these events); and on the last day of the festival an entertaining water battle takes places at the marina.
1. Where are the Azores?
The Azores archipelago comprises of nine unique Portuguese islands located in the mid-Atlantic between Portugal (932 miles) and North America (2,423 miles).
2. When is the best time to travel to the Azores?
Ideally the answer would depend on what your interests are, but in general the peak time would be between April and October when the weather is at its most settled. The Azores is particularly beautiful in the Spring (Apr-Jun) when the archipelago erupts into vibrant colours with the bloom of hydrangeas, agapanthus and ginger lily.
Enjoy beautiful nativity scenes in Ponta Delgada, plus classic choral concerts and celebrations throughout many towns and villages across the island for Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, see communities welcome in the new year together with street parties, live music, drinking, dancing and, of course, fireworks. The festivities also expand into the hotels, with many offering gala dinners and other activities, to ensure it’s the most wonderful time of the year.
January is an excellent time to try something new and get active. São Miguel is blessed with dramatic volcanic scenery – giant crater lakes and hissing hot springs – so it is an ideal destination for increasing your daily step count. Many of the islands’ hiking trails pass around, or even through, some of the once-active volcanoes, which have made this fertile landscape what it is today. Walking Inside Volcanoes is a flexible self-guided trip, offering the chance to see the best of São Miguel – from the steaming holes (fumaroles) where traditional ‘Cozido’ is cooked (a stew with multiple meats, plus potatoes and vegetables, that’s all cooked underground by heat from the volcanic steam vents in Furnas) to the stunning lakes formed in volcanic craters.
3. Is there a direct flight from the UK?
See details for flights here
4. Which island(s) would you recommend for my first trip to the archipelago?
We would recommend the island of Sao Miguel as an ideal island for an introduction to the Azores. There is plenty to see and do during a week long stay. Take a drive to see a fabulous volcanic crater lake; visit a pineapple factory and tea plantation; bathe in a thermal hot pool in Furnas' botanical park; swim with dolphins; play a round of golf – the list goes on. For a multi-centre holiday the islands of Sao Miguel, Faial and Terceira are popular combinations for first time visitors.
5. Which island(s) are particularly good for walking?
All the islands are good for walking but some of the most scenic walks can be found on Sao Miguel, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico, Flores and Santa Maria.
6. What wildlife am I likely to see in the Azores?
24 of the planet's 80 species of whales and dolphins have been sighted off the coast of the Azores. During the summer months (Jul-Aug) migratory species including pods of baleen whales, pilot and beaked whales, Atlantic-spotted dolphins, striped dolphins and turtles pass the islands. Whereas, in winter and spring (Oct-Jun), species of baleen whales such as fin whales, sei whales and blue whales are likely to be seen.
7. Can I travel between the islands by boat?
Travel between the islands by boat is possible but not always recommended as the distance between most of the islands would mean that the majority of your day is spent travelling. The exception would be the central group of islands, Faial, Pico and Sao Jorge which, due to their close proximity, are only a short ferry crossing from one other (between 30-90 minutes). For connections between other islands we would recommend inter-island flights.
8. What is the weather like in the Azores?
The Azores has a mild climate year round (15 degrees in the winter and reaching 25C degrees in the height of summer) making it the perfect destination for outdoor activities such as walking, whale watching, kayaking and jeep tours.
9. What are some of the highlights of the Azores?
Sea activities such as whale and dolphin watching excursions and swimming with dolphins; guided island tours with plenty of photo stop opportunities; colourful festivals including the Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (Christ of Miracles) – the second largest religious festival in Portugal which takes place in Ponta Delgada on the fifth Sunday after Easter; bathing in a thermal pool; walking through the botanical gardens of Furnas; visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angra do Heroismo (Terceira); ordering a gin and tonic at Peter's Cafe (Faial) – a must for any visitor to the island; and a climb up Mount Pico, the highest point (2,351km) in Portugal.
10. Is it expensive to eat out?
The cost of living in the Azores is extremely reasonable. A coffee is about 60p; a draft beer from 90p and a two-course dinner including drinks approximately £32.00.
The weather in the Azores is mild and quite changeable. The average temperature ranges from 14 to 22 degrees centigrade. Sea temperatures range from 15 to 23 degrees centigrade. It is not uncommon to experience four seasons in one day! If it is overcast in the morning, by early afternoon the sun will be shining. By late afternoon it may rain and be windy late evening. Be prepared for mixed weather on walks. Disruption to flight schedules and ferry crossings may occur, especially in winter, due to adverse weather conditions. Should flights/ferries be delayed or cancelled our local agent would be on hand to assist with alternative arrangements and overnight stays (if required).
Portuguese cuisine: delicious soups are popular as a starter; main course is either fish (including excellent seafood dishes) or meat (mainly local beef, spicy sausage or pork) accompanied by potatoes and vegetables. Salads are not very exciting and vegetarian dishes rare (although the Aldeia da Fonte in Pico does offer more choice than others). The desserts are mainly fruit (exquisite pineapple), flavourful cheeses, mousse and sweet cakes. Average cost of a 3-course meal with wine is 20 Euros per person.

Best of the Azores: 7 days in São Miguel
Adored this tour. Can’t wait to go back to São Miguel. Recommend to everyone looking to explore the island without the hassle of hiring a car etc, everything was taken after and the guides were great in all of the days.
- Hiking & Trekking
Hiking the Azores
The hikes and info were great, even though some last minute changes were necessary due to trail closures. We had a fun, varied group of 13 and the logistics all worked well. The only disappointment was Hotel Zenite on Terceira Island - it was an aging hotel with poor service and should be replaced with a different hotel in the same area.
Highlights of the Azores
A very beautiful place with wonderful landscapes, thermal baths, cheese and wine. Our guide Sasha was lovely and very informative as well as delightful to talk too. I enjoyed all the activities but do ensure you were good shoes for the home. recommend that a visit to the cheese factory is added the morning you arrive on Sao Jorge.
- Walking Adventure
Walking in the Azores
Overall good itinerary and opportunity to see quite a lot from Azores. I would however prefer if more hikes were included in base package. Otherwise it was a bit of a mess and not so clear alternatives (and information materials on them seem to be a bit outdated). In any case, e.g. in Horta there is not much to see on our own, so would be nice to include a couple of hikes and highlights already in base package. Other than that very thoughtful logistics with 5 islands in 2 weeks. The first hotel in Ponta Delgada is a bit basic - no pool, basic breakfast, but the others were good. I think reservations for group dinners are good every now and then, but it should be as an option and better to be asked first whether people actually want them instead of presenting it a a big favour and literally making feel ashame if you don't go or cancel too late. You don't want to be pressured in time and sometimes it is more interesting to explore smaller places on your own rather attending a group dinner with preset menu lasting for 2-3 hours. Maybe it was miscommunication from the guide though. Overall Tania was very caring and tried to do her best, her organizational skills are very good. However, communication should be more clear, it was not transparent where exactly we go, what are the alternatives and how much do they cost (a table with all the options, required time and approximate cost can be even prepared in advance and included in information materials - we had 3 sets of materials, sometimes contradicting to each other). Also we would like more clear and timely information on what to expect of the hikes (hard or medium are very subjective words, one would like to know what is the soil, what are the views etc). Tania was eager to listen and adjust, but it was still hard to follow, especially when asking a question, she was not really answering it but telling something else.

Best of Porto & Azores in 9 days
Second time in Portugal and we decided to go on this trip as we´ve been in Algarve and Lisbon before. While Porto and Ponta Delgada were busy we felt lucky to repeat Portugal as we would be missing out tremendously. Hotels again really well located, clean and comfortable. We loved Douro, the guide was so knowledgeable and concerned on how we were feeling. Getting into and out of the flights was fast so not much time lost on airport time. Sao Miguel island was a highlight of our last decade travel for sure and I recommend everyone to take the trip.
Best of São Miguel Island
Overall the tour was good. The response coordinating the trip was great. They did change 1 item on the itinerary but it was no problem. I didn't like the location of the hotel. There was nothing close by (shops, restaurants, etc.). This also wasn't a tour where you were with the same group of people. It was more solo where you met different people on different days and no one stayed in the same location so very little group bonding. It was nice on the days I had the rental car so I was able to get out to stores, restaurants and sights. The last day there was a dinner but it was so far from the location of the hotel, I didn't even bother going. Note: the canyoning was well worth it!

This was an amazing tour! So well organized from start to finish. We were extremely happy with our accommodation and every single one of our daily tours and each tour guide. Nice small groups of max 6-8 people for each tour. I cannot recommend this tour enough.

Azores Attractions & Landmarks Guide
Where are the azores.
The Azores seem a little bit hidden on the map, but if you zoom in on the coast of Portugal, you’ll see the archipelago of nine islands. The islands are located around 1,000 miles off of coastal Portugal . The nine islands are divided into three groups. San Miguel and Santa Maria make up the eastern islands.
The central islands consist of Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico, and Faial. Flores and Corvo are the western Islands. The Azores are a great happy medium for those who want to visit Europe without the long flight. This is also a great option for those heading to Lisbon, France, or elsewhere in Europe who want to break up the flight. Leave from the east coast (Boston or New York), break up the trip with a stop in the Azores, and continue on to other parts of Europe, or vice versa.
Outdoor travel activities on the Azores
The Azores has plenty of outdoor activities for anyone and everyone in your group. Different islands offer various activities, but here, we’ll list some of the must-dos:
- Whale watching – the Azores is often part of the migration route, and some sea life choose to make this their permanent home. On good days, you can see a combination of turtles, dolphins and whales.
- Diving – get underwater and see some more marine life! Diving provides the opportunity to see stingrays, turtles, sharks, and mantas. The best time to go diving is June-October.
- Paragliding provides a different view of the islands. Deep canyons, high peaks, and great views are offered, and this provides a birds-eye view that other viewing points can’t reach. There is a reason why there is an annual international paragliding festival on the island of Sao Miguel.
Islands of the Azores
As many of us would like to visit all nine islands, sometimes, it’s just not possible. Pick a few for this adventure – you’ll be craving more). Regardless of where you go, there’s beautiful scenery and opportunity for adventure. Here’s a quick island guide to help you decide which Azores islands you should visit:
- Pico island : Looking to climb the tallest mountain in Portugal? Head to Pico island for some great hiking, and make sure to visit the volcanic vineyards at the bottom of the mountain.
- Terceira : The second largest island, this is a popular visit for those wanting to learn about the history of the Azores and want to visit UNESCO sites.
- Sao Jorge has some of the best landscapes and outdoor adventure options in the Azores. Mountains, fjord-like lakes, cliffs, and vineyards are all found on this island.
- Faial is a popular destination for people hoping to see marine life.
- Santa Maria is a great option if you’re looking for great sandy beaches and warm swimming water.
- Flores – filled with waterfalls, lagoons, crater lakes, and florals, some of the best nature is found on Flores island. Combined with activities such as canyoning, caves, and lava tubes, anyone looking to spend tons of time outdoors should consider a visit to Flores.
- Sao Miguel – The biggest island, and the most popular among tourists, Sao Miguel is usually the island most people visit. Some of the best features of the Azores (nature, community, plus the tea plantation!) is found in Sao Miguel.
- Corvo – the island of Corvo is one big community, with a little over 400 people living there. If you’re looking for an escape and some alone time, consider visiting Corvo island.
- Graciosa is calm and quiet, and offers some awesome whale-watching opportunities.
Must try food in the Azores
One of the best parts of traveling is trying the local cuisine, and the Azores has some special dishes! Because of the location and climate of the Azores, they have a unique opportunity to produce ingredients that can’t be grown in other parts of Europe . Make sure to try these foods when you’re in the Azores:
1. Cheese – not a commonly expected item on the list, but it’s the most well known local product on the island. Around 50 percent of the cheese found in Portugal is from the Azores. One of the most popular types of cheese is the trangy three-year Sao Jorge cheese.
2. Tropical Fruit – Passion fruit, pineapples, and oranges are some of the delicious fruit you can find on the island. Fruits in the Azores have high acidity because of the climate and the soil. Visit a pineapple plantation on the island of Sao Miguel.
3. Seafood – Traditional seafood is found here. Fish and tuna are popular ones. The real treat is the rare seafood, such as leopard-print eels, cracas (barnacle) and/or lapas (sea snails). Different islands have different sea creatures you can crack into (literally, like the caracas you crack into on Terceira Island). Whether you want to go with something familiar or something exotic, sea food options are plenty.
4. Drinks – wine, coffee, and tea. Surprisingly enough, the Azores grow all three! Visit the vineyards on Pico Island and see the unique pattern the wine grows in. The island of Sao Miguel is where Europe’s only tea plantation is found. Also grown in the Azores, found on the island of Sao Jorge, is coffee. Arabica beans grow in the village of Faja dos Vimes, one of the only places where coffee beans can grow in Europe.
Getting to the Azores
The Azores are located in Europe, but it’s actually an easy destination trip for visitors traveling from both the United States and Europe. A quick four or five hour flight from Boston or New York via Delta airlines or SATA airlines (the airline for the Azores) can get you to the islands sitting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
For those departing from Europe, the Azores are a quick two-hour flight from Lisbon . Thanks to low-cost airlines, such as EasyJet and RyanAir, the trip is also affordable! Visitors can fly from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada International Airport on the island of Sao Miguel for just $40. For those who want to visit multiple islands, many tour options allow the opportunity to island hop, taking care of the need to figure out how to get between islands. Some tours include accommodations as well.
Flights : Each island in the Azores has its own airport, so whether you’re visiting one island, three islands, or all nine, it’s easy to transport yourself. Most international flights fly into San Miguel, and connecting flights are offered to other islands. If you’re flying in from Lisbon, there are more options of which island you can fly into, including Horta, Terceira, and Santa Maria.
This is helpful for those who are traveling in the off-months, as some islands don’t offer ferry service in the colder months. SATA, the Azores islands airline, makes it easy to hop between different islands. The airline actually offers an Azores Air Pass, that allows nonresidents to explore multiple islands.
There are a few guidelines : the pass allows you to make three stops on different islands, but you must spend at least 24 hours on each island before departing for the next. An international/domestic flight ticket to the Azores must be combined with the Azores air pass while checking in for the flights. This is a pretty cool offer for those who want to jump around to different islands!
Boats : While the option to fly is there, nearly every Azorean island is connected through a ferry boat. Some routes are only available in the warmer months. The ferry system makes it possible to easily tour any of the islands.
Traveling around the Azores
1. Car rental
Renting a car while visiting the Azores is an ideal option. The freedom that comes with the car rental gives you full potential, that a tour or public transportation may not allow. You can stop wherever and whenever you want (in a safe pull-off location, of course) to snap photos of the incredible scenery, or to just sit and soak in the views.
Want to wake up early and drive somewhere for sunrise? You’re able to do it! Want to spend some time at home between your morning and afternoon adventure? A rental car allows that. Local rental car services usually have better pricing than large well-known rental car agencies. Whichever route you go, don’t skip out on the car insurance though.
The windy roads and “off-roads” may contain dirt and gravel that may scrape your car. No one wants to arrive home with a pricey bill for a scratch that happened. Adding CDW or super CDW can make sure you’re covered without liability for potential damage. This isn’t meant to scare you or dissuade you from renting a car, just some smart traveling tips!
2. Tour group
A tour group is a great medium for someone who wants to explore all the best spots, but may not have the opportunity (or desire) to rent a car. When exploring a foreign area, car rental actually isn’t such a bad idea. You don’t have to worry about trying to navigate the road, and you get the opportunity to just sit and stare out the window, enjoying the landscape.
Another perk – not having to deal with parking. Popular attractions can lead to sometimes difficult parking situations. With a tour bus, you just jump off and go. Tour groups usually hit all the best spots, and allow times to get out, stretch, and take photos. Some tour guides may know hidden spots that you may not find if you rented a car and drove around the islands yourself.
Options include half-day trips and full day trips, or a tour from the start of your trip to the end. Inexpensive options often have larger groups, usually 30+ people on a bus. If you want a more intimate experience, look for a company that offers small groups to give you a more personal experience.
3. Public transportation
Public transport in the Azores isn’t usually targeted for tourists, but it does exist! The routes serve the locals who are heading to work, so most buses don’t run often or frequent enough to solely rely on jumping around the island. Some routes only run a few times per day, if they run at all.
Again, not the best way to get around and visit the island, but if you’re on island time and staying in the main villages, the local buses may work for you. Taxis aren’t really an economical choice either. They’re expensive and if you’re going somewhere off the beaten path, it may be hard to get a taxi to return you home.
If you do find one, taxi services sometimes charge passengers the fare it takes to reach the destination from where they are retrieving you.
