The 5 As of Tourism

If you’re undertaking a geography qualification or are just an avid traveller, then you may well have heard of the “5 As” of tourism. These are five factors that create the perfect travel destination and draw in thousands of visitors every year. They are fundamental to the success of the growing tourism industry.

  • Accessibility
  • Accommodation

Each of these components is essential to creating an enjoyable and successful trip.

Let’s take a look at each individually.

1. Accessibility

Accessibility is the ability for tourists to get to where they need to go. This means having efficient airports, transportation, and roads. It also means having convenient access to restaurants and other services. Tourists need to be able to get to their desired destination easily, whether it’s by plane, train, car, or boat. If a holiday destination is difficult to get to with long travel times and many swaps in transport then they may choose a different location. Easy access to transportation is essential for a successful trip.

2. Accommodation

Accommodation refers to the type of lodging available for tourists. No one wants to stay in a dirty, crowded and rundown hotel when they have paid so much money in travelling to their destination. The growth in all-inclusive resorts has prompted many tourists to set higher standards for their accommodation. In order for a destination to be successful in drawing in and retaining a steady stream of visitors they must offer lots of different accommodation options. Hotels, resorts, motels, vacation rentals, and other lodging options should be available. The rise in Airbnb has given many a luxury choice of opting for a “home away from home”.

3. Activities

This one is a pretty clear factor of tourism. Tourists want to be entertained while on holiday and participate in activities they may not usually undertake. These could include: swimming, hiking, sightseeing, shopping, and dining. It’s important to have a wide range of activities available to appeal to a variety of tourists. Travel companies often provide access to these activities from hotels, providing transport to nearby national parks, theme parks or towns. These are known as excursions.

4. Amenities

Amenities are the little extras that make a trip even more enjoyable. These include things like Wi-Fi, pool access, spa services, and more. Having great amenities can help make a tourist’s trip even more enjoyable. Tourists like to make sure that they are getting their money’s worth and so when searching for a holiday they will often opt for package options that give them the most amenities within their budget.

5. Attraction

Attraction is the most obvious aspect of tourism. Tourists are drawn to places of beauty, unique culture, and interesting history. Whether it’s a beach, mountain, city, or countryside, attractions are what draw tourists to visit a certain place. Countries that have economies that rely heavily on tourist income will ensure more funding is pushed towards improving the attraction of the area. Improvements to the landscape and infrastructure are made to make it more appealing to guests.

Bonus A : Affordability

Affordability is not typically counted in the 5 As but is sometimes substituted in. Affordability is a very important component of tourism. Tourists want to find affordable options when it comes to all of the above. Whether it be transport, accommodation, activities or amenities. Finding great deals and sometimes even discounts can help make holidays more affordable and remove stress – making them more enjoyable too.

The five As of tourism are essential for a successful trip. Attraction, Activities, Accessibility, Accommodation and Amenities are all important components that need to be taken into consideration when planning a vacation. The tourism industry must also take these factors into account when advertising holidays to help draw in tourists. Affordability is also an important component of tourism and is often the deciding factor in whether a person will choose a certain destination. Finding the perfect balance of the components helps make a trip more enjoyable and successful.

What are the 5 A’s of Travel? A Guide to Essential Travel Elements

The 5 A’s of travel are a set of principles that have been developed to help travelers make the most of their experiences. These principles are designed to help travelers plan their trips, make the most of their time, and have a more enjoyable and rewarding experience overall. The 5 A’s of travel include anticipation, arrival, adventure, adaptation, and appreciation.

Anticipation is the first A of travel and involves the planning and preparation that goes into a trip. This includes researching destinations, booking accommodations, and making travel arrangements. The second A is arrival, which involves the journey to the destination and the first impressions of the new surroundings. Adventure is the third A and involves the exploration and discovery of new places and experiences. Adaptation is the fourth A and involves adjusting to new environments, cultures, and customs. Finally, appreciation is the fifth A and involves reflecting on the experiences and memories made during the trip.

Accessibility

Table of Contents

Accessibility is an essential aspect of travel, and it involves the ease of getting around and finding suitable accommodation. Travelers with disabilities or mobility issues need to consider accessibility when planning their trips.

Transportation Options

When it comes to transportation, it’s crucial to consider the accessibility options available. Many cities have public transportation systems with accessible buses, trains, and subway stations. Additionally, ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft have options for wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Travelers should research transportation options before arriving at their destination to ensure they can get around comfortably.

Accommodation Accessibility

Accessibility in accommodations is also essential. Hotels and resorts should have accessible rooms with features like wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and accessible bathrooms. It’s important to check with the hotel before booking to ensure that the room meets the traveler’s needs. Additionally, some vacation rentals may offer accessibility features, such as ground-level entrances and accessible bathrooms.

Overall, accessibility is a critical factor to consider when planning a trip. By researching transportation options and accommodations, travelers can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

When it comes to travel, one of the most exciting aspects is the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities. From cultural experiences to adventure and recreation, there are endless possibilities for travelers to explore.

Cultural Experiences

For those who are interested in immersing themselves in local culture, there are a variety of activities to choose from. This may include visiting museums, art galleries, and historical landmarks. Travelers may also choose to participate in local festivals and events, try traditional cuisine, or take part in cultural workshops and classes.

Adventure and Recreation

For those who are seeking more adventurous experiences, there are plenty of options available. This may include hiking, biking, or rock climbing in scenic locations. Water sports such as surfing, kayaking, and snorkeling are also popular choices. Travelers may also choose to participate in extreme sports such as skydiving or bungee jumping.

No matter what type of activity a traveler is interested in, there are plenty of options available to suit their interests and preferences. It’s important to research and plan ahead to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

When it comes to travel, amenities can make or break a trip. The 5 A’s of travel include amenities, and for good reason. Amenities can make a traveler’s experience more comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable.

Dining Options

One important amenity that travelers look for is dining options. Whether it’s a quick snack or a full meal, having a variety of dining options can enhance a traveler’s experience. Many hotels and resorts offer on-site restaurants, cafes, and bars, while others provide room service or delivery options. Some even offer cooking classes or food tours to give travelers a taste of the local cuisine.

Shopping and Services

Another important amenity for travelers is shopping and services. Many hotels and resorts offer on-site shopping options, such as gift shops, boutiques, and convenience stores. This can be especially convenient for travelers who forgot to pack something or need to purchase souvenirs. Additionally, some hotels offer services such as laundry, dry cleaning, and concierge services to make a traveler’s stay more comfortable and stress-free.

Overall, amenities play a crucial role in the travel experience. From dining options to shopping and services, having access to these amenities can make a trip more enjoyable and convenient for travelers.

Affordability

When it comes to travel, affordability is a crucial factor that determines the feasibility of the trip. The cost of travel includes various expenses such as transportation, accommodation, food, and activities. Proper budget planning and cost-saving techniques can help travelers manage their expenses and make their trip more affordable.

Budget Planning

Before embarking on a trip, it is essential to create a budget plan that outlines all the expenses. This plan should include transportation costs, accommodation expenses, food costs, and any additional activities that the traveler wishes to participate in. By creating a budget plan, travelers can get a clear idea of how much they can afford to spend on their trip and avoid overspending.

Cost-Saving Tips

There are several cost-saving techniques that travelers can use to make their trip more affordable. Some of these include:

  • Travel during the off-season: During the off-season, prices for flights, accommodations, and activities are generally lower than during peak season.
  • Use travel rewards: Many credit cards offer travel rewards that can be used to pay for flights, hotels, and other travel expenses.
  • Stay in budget accommodations: Hostels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals are often cheaper than hotels and can help travelers save money on accommodation.
  • Cook meals: Eating out can be expensive, so travelers can save money by cooking their meals or buying food from local markets.
  • Use public transportation: Taking public transportation is often cheaper than renting a car or taking taxis.

By using these cost-saving techniques and proper budget planning, travelers can make their trip more affordable and enjoyable without breaking the bank.

Key Elements of a Destination, Part 5: Amenities

Key Elements of a Destination, Part 5: Amenities

In the final installment of this series, we take a look at the role amenities play in shaping the visitor experience and how your DMO can leverage them to encourage return visits and positive word of mouth. Read time: seven minutes

This blog has been updated here.

Regardless of why visitors have chosen your destination for their next trip — whether for business, leisure or bleisure travel — tourism experts agree that there are fundamental expectations your destination must meet in order for visitors to recommend their experience to others and to return with friends or family. These key elements are known as the 5 A's: Access, Accommodation, Attractions, Activities, and Amenities.

In the final installment of this five-part series, we will address the fifth A — Amenities. You can catch up on the first four articles in this series here:

Access Accommodations Attractions Activities

Key Element — Amenities

Amenities include (access to) basic facilities and services that help a visitor feel comfortable and secure in your destination. Sometimes referred to as the “pleasantness” of a place, they play an important role in shaping the visitor experience and include things like public restrooms, signage, connectivity, emergency services, postal facilities, roads, sidewalks, safe drinking water, etc. And while it can be tempting to take these elements for granted, ready access to them plays a major role in determining whether visitors will plan a return visit or recommend your destination to others . While providing all of these visitor amenities is certainly not solely the role of DMOs, collaborating with local service providers, city officials, stakeholders, and support personnel to ensure they are well-equipped to meet these expectations is absolutely within the purview of today's DMO ( Destination Management Organization ).

Let’s start by discussing the amenities in your destination that your DMO can impact directly.

Visitor Centers

If you have a visitor center in your area, ensure that it’s staffed with people who are both hospitable and knowledgeable about your destination. They are sometimes a visitor’s first interaction with your destination, and what they say matters. Regarding the visitor center itself, what are the conditions of the parking lot? How about the bathrooms? Is it well-lit?

I recently visited a small town for a half marathon, and one of the first things we did following the race was find the visitor center for more information about the city. Unfortunately, the center was closed that day. I was a bit surprised since this event was widely publicized and clearly drawing many visitors to this destination. It is certainly understandable that keeping your center open for longer hours on slow days in your market can be expensive. But dedicating a small, well-lit, weather-proof area outside the center for a map, visitor guides, even lists of recommended restaurants, activities and attractions is worth the investment to help visitors that do arrive outside of business hours feel welcome.

Your Website

An attractive, user-friendly, easily navigable website is another important amenity that your DMO should offer to visitors. No doubt your site already has information for travelers who are planning a visit, but what about for visitors who are already in town? Featuring weekly articles on your homepage that suggest a list of the top 5 things to check out that week is a great way to make visitors feel valued while they’re in market. Also, make sure your content calendar is up to date and easy to filter according to interest. Offering sample itineraries can also help visitors make the most of their time by suggesting attractions, restaurants and local shops that are in close proximity to one another.

Partnering With Local Stakeholders

City officials.

Work to be sure your DMO is at the table for city planning meetings, and always attend prepared to represent the visitor’s perspective. The conditions of the roads and sidewalks in the most trafficked areas of your city should be on your agenda so local officials can (hopefully) prioritize them when it comes time for maintenance and repairs. And, in the same way you are keeping your website content up to date, the wayfinding signage in your destination can likely always be improved upon. Be sure this signage is on your agenda with this group, and voice the value of wayfinding to the visitor experience so regular updates and major upgrades can be included in the city’s planning budget.

Law Enforcement

Think about the last time you visited a new place. Do you recall seeing law enforcement out and about? On foot, car, horse, motorcycle, bicycle, standing scooters, etc.? Did you see them only at night? Or only as security at the big events in town?  Residents might not notice when they see police out and about, but knowing they are close by can create a sense of safety and security for visitors who may be unfamiliar with your town.

Local law enforcement are also brand ambassadors for your destination. Consider scheduling some time to meet with them and discuss the role they play in representing your destination’s brand, mission and values. They are vital in shaping your destination’s image as a safe, friendly city where visitors feel welcome, relaxed and secure.

Hotel Partners

Hotel staff are some of the first people visitors encounter when they arrive in your city. Their professionalism and ability to accommodate visitor requests play a crucial role in shaping overall perceptions of your destination. Help your hotel partners anticipate and stay one step ahead of guest requests by educating them on who your target markets are and what they expect during their stay.

For example — some travelers prioritize exercise before their day begins. While for some that may mean utilizing gym facilities, for others it means an early morning run. Talk to your hotel partners about offering options beyond traditional amenities, such as maps that outline the various mileage of different jogging routes to simplify the process for their guests and offer them safety and peace of mind.

At the end of the day, every interaction visitors have in your destination matters. Your DMO works hard to promote brand awareness and positive associations among potential visitors. By evaluating and improving the amenities your destination has to offer, you are that much closer to ensuring visitors leave having had a good experience, intending to return AND most importantly, recommend your destination to others in their (real or virtual) social circles.

Travel and Tourism Industry Components (5A’s in Tourism )

Travel and tourism components captivate travel aspirants and grab them to your travel agency. These are the ingredients that add flavor to your agency’s offerings and allow you to lead the way in an ever-competitive industry.

Perhaps, you may already offer these paramount travel components, however if you miss to highlight them on your travel website, you’ll lose many significant opportunities.

To ensure that you’re maximizing the potential of these key components, let’s quickly delve into the advantages of the six components of tourism, and some ideas for weaving them seamlessly into your website.

Being a travel website development company should recognize the fundamental 5A’s of tourism. Understanding these components enables a comprehensive approach to designing and developing travel websites that cater to the dynamic needs of modern travelers. As a dedicated travel digital marketing services provider, recognizing the intricate dynamics of these components is crucial in crafting engaging and user-friendly travel platforms that effectively highlight the unique offerings of various destinations.

Table Of Contents

Components of tourism, 1. attraction, 2. activities, 3. accessibility, 4. accommodation, 5. amenities, 6. affordability.

Travel and Tourism Industry Components (Attraction) - ColorWhistle

Today, people seek attraction in everything – the food they eat, the clothes they wear, etc. Why attraction is important for the Travel & Tourism industry?

According to Phocuswright , 36% of people rated travel as an important priority for spending their time and money. The NYU states that 68% of tourists pay more attention to attractive places to travel. Today, different groups of people are traveling and exploring a lot around the world.

Though all people travel, their reasons for traveling might differ from person-to-person. Some people travel,

  • To write novels, epics, short stories. Usually, writers have the habit of traveling to get new ideas
  • To spend their vacation, this is evident from the study by Travel Agent Central stating that around $101.1 billion is spent by Americans on summer vacations.
  • To relax from the depressions caused by the outer world. The Global Commission on Ageing and Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies in partnership with the U.S. Travel Association stated that traveling actually keeps you healthy.

How will travelers know about the services you offer?

According to Facebook , 87% of people get inspired to travel from social media. Therefore, you can post charming images and virtual reality videos on your page and impress your viewers.

Typically, people get closer to things that attract them. Therefore, you can grasp the attention of many people through your attractive travel sites.

Travel and Tourism Industry Components (Activities) - ColorWhistle

Actually, how can you make an ordinary trip an extraordinary one? The answer to this question will be activities. Other than anything else, activities like hiking, biking, trekking actually impress your travelers.

  • According to Short Term Rentalz 2019, 85% of families said that their priority for travel was outdoor activities.
  • TripAdvisor’s latest analysis stated that snorkeling activities have gone up to 64% since last year and sailing trips have gone up to 55% within the last year.

For instance, if a person goes for a trip to a beach spot, there should be boats, lifejackets, emergency kits, etc so it would be possible for a traveler to actively go for a boat ride.

You can use technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality to design videos on your websites and create awareness about the available travel activities.

Travel and Tourism Industry Components (Accessibility) - ColorWhistle

Accessibility to a place is the most important thing in travel as it helps a person to reach that place of attraction. Some of the most visited areas by tourists are France, Singapore, Rome, Italy, China, Mexico, etc.

Each tourist place in these countries follows various terms and conditions. Some rules would be like,

  • In Singapore, if you spit chewing gum in public places, you will have to pay $1000 as a penalty.
  • Traffic rules are strictly followed in Mexico that everyone on the road should know in which direction to move.
  • Both men and women are supposed to follow the dress codes while visiting the holy places in Rome.

Another difficulty of a traveler in accessing a place would be transportation. Based on the regions, transport also varies

  • The gondola is the mode of transport used in Italy.
  • People of France use Trams for moving from one place to another.
  • The Turkish countrymen have underground funicular railways as their transport.

It would be more interesting for tourists if they are already familiar with these transport mediums, rules, and regulations.

Travel and Tourism Industry Components (Accommodation) - ColorWhistle

When a traveler goes on a trip, he/she wishes to have a good place to stay with all amenities and luxuries. A place with lots of comforts attracts travelers even more.

  • The Short Term Rentalz says that 60% of family travelers like to accommodate in hotels, while 21% prefer to resorts.
  • The Booking website gives an analysis that 73% of travelers yearn to stay in greenish accommodation at least once in their lifetime

In the olden days, travelers used to book the rooms through a travel agent or by contacting the hotel accommodations team.

For instance, what would be the first thing that a traveler who is planning for a trip does? The traveler searches for the availability of rooms in the net along with many queries like – Are there any local affiliations near to the Hotel? What about the food menu provided? Am I entitled to any exclusive amenities inside my room?

At that time, if your website acts as an answer key for the tourist’s questions, then you will be able to stand out from your competitors.

You cannot easily win the heart of your traveler unless you provide the required amenities.

Interesting statistics about amenities of a Traveler,

Sockets – According to PR Newswire Association, 81% of people agree that they take smartphones during travel as their primary accessory. You can provide sockets to charge these electronic devices like tablets, gadgets, laptops.

Personalized lavatories – Cornell University states that 86% of travelers used the available toiletries. Therefore, you can provide amenities like personal-sized shampoos, conditioners, body washes, hand soap, etc.

When travelers get impressed by the facilities you offer during their stay, even for their next trips they will come again to your travel agency. Also, they will start recommending your services to others. Therefore, the amenities you provide will bring greater promotions to your travel business!.

  • According to travel statistics by Google, 57% of travelers feel that travel websites should customize information based on their past bookings and personal preferences.
  • HubSpot states that 61% of users are unlikely to return to a site if they had trouble loading it on their mobile device and 40% of users are likely to jump ship to a competitor’s site if the mobile site of their preferred brand takes a long time to load.

This is the sixth ‘A’ but nonetheless very important to attract tourists to the destination. Tourists should be able to afford the trip in terms of transport costs, accommodation charges, entrance fees at attractions and the number of days, which need to be spent on travel and stay; i.e. they should be able to afford the holiday in terms of time and money. Tour operators prepare package tours keeping affordability in mind. These group tours work out cheaper than individuals booking their own tickets and making itineraries for themselves

A successful destination would have a good balance between these six ‘A’s and ensure that there is something to see and do for people of different ages and backgrounds so that a large number of tourists visit the place.

Drive Conversions and Boost your Business with Expert Travel Website Development.

Apart from the classic five ‘A’s of tourism, we suggest a sixth ‘A’ which is vital to the tourism agency’s success, Affordability.

The travel expenses like transport costs, accommodation charges, entrance fees, and many more should be at an affordable price for travelers. For this reason, tourist agencies are coming up with new projects on package tours. This is because, those who are traveling on package tours do not have to book tickets, plan itineraries on their own because the tour operators themselves plan everything for travel at a cheaper cost.

Thus, if the destined touring spots should have more visitors, then the above mentioned A’s should be balanced equally, and also travelers of different age groups and backgrounds should have some things interesting for them to explore.

Generally, in the tourism industry, attraction and activities go hand in hand. Even though the 5 components are important for trips, in recent years, attraction & activities have become the heart and soul of successful tourism!

Thus, travel aspirants should be aware that your agency provides all these 5 A’s. And the travel agents can reveal it to travelers via the website. If you are in the travel & tourism industry and are looking to create an attractive travel website to improve your brand image, get partnered with a professional website development company . By comprehensively understanding the 5A’s in tourism, we can skillfully leverage travel digital marketing services to create engaging platforms. Such adept integration of travel website development services ensures a seamless and immersive user experience.

What are the 5 A’s of travel?

geographic-faq

As a Digital Nomad, I have had the opportunity to explore various destinations and experience different aspects of travel. One concept that I find particularly interesting is the 5 A’s of travel. These key elements, namely Access, Accommodation, Attractions, Activities, and Amenities, play a crucial role in shaping the tourism experience.

Access refers to the ease with which travelers can reach their desired destination. It encompasses transportation options, such as flights, trains, or roadways. Access also includes visa requirements and the overall infrastructure in place to facilitate travel.

Accommodation:

Accommodation plays a vital role in providing travelers with a comfortable and enjoyable stay. This includes hotels, resorts, vacation rentals, and any other form of lodging that caters to the needs of tourists. The quality and variety of accommodation options can greatly influence a traveler’s decision to visit a particular destination.

Attractions:

Attractions are the key motivators that inspire travelers to visit a destination. These can range from natural wonders such as beaches, mountains, or national parks, to cultural landmarks, historical sites, or theme parks. A destination’s attractions are its unique selling points and are often the primary reason why tourists choose to visit.

Activities:

Activities refer to the experiences and things to do that are available to travelers. This can include adventure sports, guided tours, culinary experiences, or cultural activities. The range and diversity of activities at a destination contribute to the overall satisfaction of travelers.

Amenities are the facilities and services that support the needs of travelers during their trip. This includes amenities such as restaurants, shopping centers, spas, and recreational facilities. The availability of amenities enhances the overall experience and ensures that travelers have access to essential services.

While the 5 A’s of travel provide a comprehensive framework to understand the various aspects of tourism, there are additional factors and questions that can arise. Let’s explore some frequently asked questions:

1. What is the significance of the 5 A’s of tourism theory? The 5 A’s of tourism theory help in understanding the essential components that contribute to a successful tourism experience. By focusing on access, accommodation, attractions, activities, and amenities, destinations can better cater to the needs and preferences of travelers.

2. How do the 5 A’s of tourism contribute to marketing? The 5 A’s of tourism serve as a foundation for tourism marketing strategies. They help destinations identify their unique selling points and develop targeted marketing campaigns that highlight their access, accommodation options, attractions, activities, and amenities.

3. Are the 5 A’s of tourism applicable to all destinations? Yes, the 5 A’s of tourism can be applied to all destinations, regardless of their size or location. However, the specific elements within each category may vary depending on the destination’s characteristics and target audience.

4. What are the other important aspects of travel besides the 5 A’s? In addition to the 5 A’s, other important aspects of travel include safety and security, sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and the overall hospitality provided by locals. These factors can greatly enhance the travel experience and contribute to the long-term success of a destination.

5. How can destinations improve their access and transportation options? Destinations can improve their access by investing in infrastructure projects such as airports, ports, or roadways. They can also establish partnerships with airlines or transportation companies to increase connectivity and provide convenient travel options for tourists.

6. What role do local communities play in developing tourism activities? Local communities play a crucial role in developing and promoting tourism activities. They can offer authentic cultural experiences, organize community-based tours, and engage in sustainable practices that preserve their heritage and benefit the local economy.

7. How can destinations ensure the availability of amenities for tourists? Destinations can ensure the availability of amenities by developing robust hospitality and service industries. They can also collaborate with local businesses to provide a wide range of amenities, including restaurants, shopping centers, healthcare facilities, and recreational options.

8. Is sustainability an important consideration in the 5 A’s of travel? Yes, sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the tourism industry. Destinations need to balance the economic, environmental, and social impacts of tourism to ensure long-term viability. Sustainable practices can be integrated into each of the 5 A’s to minimize negative effects and promote responsible tourism.

In conclusion, the 5 A’s of travel provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the essential components of tourism. Access, accommodation, attractions, activities, and amenities collectively shape the tourism experience and influence travelers’ choices. By considering these elements and addressing additional factors such as safety, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity, destinations can create unforgettable experiences for visitors while benefiting their local communities.

How the 5 As of Tourism Often Miss the True Meaning of 'Accessibility'

5 a's of tourism ppt

For a long time, there has been a wide academic theory to support tourism development, which has given us a basic framework known as “ the 5 As of Tourism .” If the framework is to be believed, by fulfilling these five basic requirements, you should be able to create a successful tourist industry in your area. These 5 As are: Attractions, Accessibility, Accommodation, Amenities and Activities. However, it could be argued that many places have completely forgotten about one of the most pivotal As: accessibility .

In its simplest form, many would say accessibility covers basic transport structures. For a location to be a tourist hub, we need to be able to move visitors from their home to their physical destination. One might assume this means planes, boats, buses and trains. While I can agree with that simplistic overarching definition, I believe it shows the lack of thought that seems to have taken hold of the tourist industry. Many appear to be serving a generic customer and haven’t thought about individual needs. Sure, an international customer would need a plane, whilst a domestic might need another mode of transport, but this is a broad way of thinking.

If we look at a simple definition of what “access” actually means, it is the means or the opportunity to approach or enter a place. If this is the actual definition, then why does this framework only refer to access as transportation? It would appear the definition needs some work. If more tourist agencies and providers took the time to provide for each and every customer, then we might be looking at a completely different tourist landscape currently. Instead, we have a demographic of our society that isn’t being considered: travelers with disabilities .

You could ask a range of people with disabilities if they believe they have the ability to travel, and many would say it isn’t truly possible for them. Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that we have the freedom to move, to be able to travel within our own country and to others. We are also guaranteed these freedoms under the Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities. But is this human right truly being met if we aren’t able to access locations or premises? It appears as if an entire sector of our economy has been consistently getting away with the bare minimum. They seem to believe if they have a plank of wood they can put over some steps, they are meeting this human right. If we are to protect the human rights of people with disabilities, shouldn’t this framework be revisited?

I ask scholars that pride themselves on understanding the 5 As of Tourism, where do you stand? I ask those who are involved in the tourist industry, is your establishment accessible? Is a location accessible just because an able-bodied person can arrive in a car or by plane? Shouldn’t the accommodation need to be accessible to people with disabilities, or the attractions? We are here to say no to places that are advertising accessible rooms when they really aren’t. A disclaimer in the small print that it isn’t sure if it can cater for all isn’t enough. All areas of our society need to be accessible to everyone if we are to truly be a fair, equal, democratic nation and world.

The purpose of this study was to investigate some key characteristics of resorts in Australia with particular reference to size, location and star rating. The data referred to 291 properties which either describe themselves as resorts or are so classified by the various Australian State and Territory motoring organisations. All properties listed in the Australian National Touriguide, Winter 1991, which satisfied either of the two criteria were studied. A further group of 120 properties, identified as resorts in the brochures of the six major domestic airlines and/or tour operators were also examined. The study concluded that, despite the efforts of the motoring organisations, there is a lack of consistency in the use of the term resort. The authors suggest that a mismatch exists between consumer understanding of the term, as used by the motoring organisations, and the way in which it is used for marketing purposes by tour operators and by the properties themselves. Typically, a resort in Australia is a three and a half-star property, a thirty five room motel style operation located in Northern New South Wales or Southern Queensland. It is postulated that the existing ad hoc use of the term resort is a recipe for confusion and that this confusion will reign until consumers, property operators and those responsible for informing and advising consumers have a clear and common definition of the term resort.
