4 Prayers for Safe Travels and Journeys

As we have the ability to move from place to place easily by car, plane or train for business or pleasure, we may think traveling is a modern-day phenomenon. However, a closer look at Scripture shows us that travel and journeys are major themes in the Bible. Throughout both the Old and News Testaments, individuals such as Abram, Jesus and Paul, for example, regularly traveled.

We can learn much from Scripture for our journeying, whether for pleasure or purpose. In particular, the theme of travel and journeys can be applied to our spiritual lives as the Bible has much to say about our spiritual journeying.

Use the prayers below for your physical journeys, but also for the spiritual journeys of yourself and others.

Preparation for the Journey

The Hebrew verb nasa can mean to set out on the beginning of a journey. The verb is used primarily in this way in the Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible. It refers to the journey of the Israelites — the start of their journey from Egypt, and the different stages of the journey when the pillar of cloud or fire indicated they should move on.

Most of us have time to prepare before we set out on a journey. But the picture of the Israelites waiting in Egypt for Pharaoh to let them go is of suddenly leaving with no preparation. Exodus 12:39 says: “...they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.”

Numbers 33 outlines the stages of the Israelites journey and the 42 times they packed up camp and set out again. It may be hard to imagine what it was like to pack up all one’s belongings — deciding what to take or leave behind, organize children, round up animals, pack food and water, and not be too exhausted to leave at the allotted time. They even had an alarm to get them going ( Numbers 10:2-6 )! We often find packing a suitcase for a few days to be tiring, and need to set an alarm when our journeys begin early.

Maybe you have never had to leave on a journey without any preparation, although perhaps at short notice. Or perhaps the only time you have had to pack up everything is to move house. Many people in our world have to set out with no preparation and leave everything behind. In particular, we think about those who flee because of war.

In all these situations, whether you are preparing for a pleasant journey, or have to suddenly leave because of dire circumstances, you can be reminded that God is watching over you as with the Israelites ( Exodus 12:42 ). This prayer is for you.

I thank You for watching over me as I prepare for all my journeys whether it is to take a vacation, travel for business, move house, or one which is thrust upon me unexpectedly. Thank You for Your constant vigil while I sleep, when I awake, and as I pack my suitcases. Give me the strength to prepare well for my journeys. When I feel fraught and tired, help me to stay calm knowing that You care for me.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to watch over men, women, and children who have to flee their homes with no preparation — those who are running away from harsh situations and from war, just like the Israelites had to run away from Egypt. I thank You that I can choose what to put in my suitcase, but I pray for those who have to put their whole lives in a suitcase, choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I ask You to care for these people who are destitute.

The Route for the Journey

The word for “road” or “way” in both the Old Testament ( derek ) and New Testament ( hodos ) can refer to a physical road ( Numbers 21:4 , Matthew 21:8 ) but also figuratively to the actions of a person and the direction they are taking.

In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were instructed to walk in the ways ( derek ) of the Lord ( Deuteronomy 10:12 ; 11:22; 19:9). Jesus used the word hodos in the following verse “I am the way ( hodos ) and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” ( John 14:6 ).

We usually do not set out on a journey without knowing the way we are going — having directions, planning the route, purchasing tickets, or other details. Even though we are careful in planning our journeys, they often come with obstacles. Delayed flights, inclement weather, and unwanted detours can present challenges and frustrations. It was the same in biblical times. The Israelites became impatient because they had to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4 ). Jesus “had to go through Samaria” ( John 4:4 ), an unwanted route for most Jews who tried to avoid contact with Samaritans.

However, Jesus’ journey through Samaria gave Him the opportunity to share the truth of who he was with the woman at the well , and through her witness many more came to have faith in Jesus.

Use the prayer below as you plan your way for any physical journey you are taking and for opportunities to show the goodness of God. Pray over your spiritual journey as well. The prayer below is based on Psalm 119:26-32 . I have paraphrased it for you:

Heavenly Father,

As I plan the route of my next journey, whether for business or pleasure, I ask that each stage of the trip will go smoothly so I can get to my destination easily. When it does not, help me not to get frustrated and annoyed, but to see the opportunities you have given me to show Your goodness and kindness, just as Jesus did.

Lord God, just as I carefully plan the physical routes for any journey I am taking, teach me the importance of being intentional with Your ways for my life. Help me to understand Your instructions so I can meditate on and follow Your wonderful teachings. Keep me from going the wrong way, or making wrong decisions. In Your goodness, gently guide me. Today, I choose to be obedient and faithfully follow You.

The Journey

Journeys such as road trips, flights, train rides, and more often give the opportunity to talk and share with those with whom we are traveling, and with strangers. They also provide teaching moments, especially for children. Deuteronomy 11:19 says we are to teach God’s words to our children “when you walk along the road...” Our trips provide a chance to focus on and speak about spiritual things, but not just with children.

Jesus took the occasions of journeys to instruct his disciples and others during his ministry and after his resurrection . In particular, we are reminded of Jesus walking with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as He “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” ( Luke 24:13-32 ). There are many other occasions, too, when Jesus used His travels for instruction — not limited to Mark 2:23-28 , Mark 9:30-34 , Luke 19:1-6 .

Journeys also present the opportunity to show compassion and love to others, as with the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:25-37 ).

Use this prayer for your upcoming journey, to look for chances to show kindness to others, to share the Gospel and your faith with family or friends traveling with you, and even with strangers you meet.

Help me to see the journeys I take as opportunities to show kindness, compassion, and Your mercy, just as Jesus did. I want to bring glory to You by sharing, encouraging, and teaching about Your love and goodness. Give me the chance to talk about what You have done for me and in my life. Help me to share my testimony and my faith with those I am in the car with, sit next to on the plane, and walk with on the road.

I thank You for the example of Jesus, who did so much of His teaching and healing while He was on journeys. Thank you that it is not just about the destination, but all that we can experience on the way. Just as You have walked with those through history who placed their trust in You, be with me and those I am traveling with today.

The Destination

When we travel and arrive at our destinations we are, in a sense, sojourners. We make a temporary stay in places that are foreign to us, whether they are other countries or different areas of our own country.

To sojourn is a familiar theme throughout the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham, for example, was a sojourner when he lived in Canaan. He sojourned in other places too: Egypt due to the famine ( Genesis 12:10 ), Gerar ( Genesis 20:1 ), and the land of the Philistines ( Genesis 21:34 ).

All of God’s people were sojourners until they arrived in the Promised Land . Then God reminded them to respect the sojourners among them because they were once foreigners ( Exodus 23:9 , Deuteronomy 10:19 , Leviticus 19:33 ).

Jesus, too, lived like a sojourner when on this earth. He said: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” ( Matthew 8:20 ). He also relied on the hospitality of others to provide a bed and food for him.

The Bible tells us we are foreigners when we don’t know Christ, but as Christians, we have become members of God’s household ( Ephesians 2:11-19 ). Even though we are considered strangers in this world ( Hebrews 11:13 , 1 Peter 2:11 ), we are to treat non-Christians well.

As you travel and take up temporary residence in different places, pray that you will be given good treatment and that, likewise, you can show God’s love and goodness to those who are strangers in your own communities and homes.

As I think about temporarily staying in another country, area, or someone’s home, not only do I hope to be treated well, but help me to be respectful to those around me who have different customs and behaviors than myself. I want to be a good witness for You in the way I behave, the actions I take, and the words I say. I also ask for Your continued protection and safety, remembering that Your concern for sojourners was not just for biblical times, but it extends to me today. Keep me and my traveling companions safe. May we be shown the hospitality that we want to extend to those who come into our homes or into our communities and country.

Traveling Mercies Meaning

The term “traveling mercies” does not appear in the bible, but there are hundreds of examples of God showing mercy for others. Mercy is God’s compassion or concern for us even though it is within His power to punish or harm us.

A traveling mercies prayer is said for someone who is going on a trip or starting a big journey. In the 19th century, these prayers were commonly said for missionaires, preachers, and volunteers who were traveling on behalf of the church. During those times travel was dangerous and unpredictable.

Today, prayers for traveling mercies are said for anyone that is embarking on a journey, whether that be by plane, train, car, boat or even on foot.

While it is easier and faster to travel than it was in the 19th century, when this term became popular, there are still many dangers in foreign lands. We need God’s protection now more than ever and we ask for his mercy through prayer.

Father, I am full of anxiety because of the possibility of an airplane crash with another airplane in the crowded skies, or an airplane malfunction. Within my heart, I know that you are the one that is in charge of my life. I know that you will protect me from danger. Let your righteous right hand be on the pilot and the entire crew. Protection against Accidents Prayer Dear God, as I start this journey today, I ask for protection against any accidents that the enemy has planned for me. I take refuge under your wings. Your faithfulness is my shield and rampart. Lord, protect me and my fellow travelers against any and all dangers we might encounter. Send your angels before us to go and crush any harm that the enemy has planned in our path. Take control of the pilots and drivers so that everyone follows the rules and pays attention while they are in charge of the vehicle. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good Weather Prayer Father, you are the maker of everything in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.  As we start this journey today, Lord, give us good weather.  May the weather be clear from our starting place to our destination, and may it continue being good even when we come back. Lift away every strong wind, storm, heavy rain, flood, and any other adverse weather element not just in this place but across the world so that every traveler can have a safe journey. The sun will not harm us by day, nor the moon by night as we travel. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Traveling Anxieties Prayer Dear Father, I present my request for safe travels to you today. I am full of anxiety because I am about to embark on a long journey. But I refuse to let anxiety rob me of this chance you have given to me to explore the world and its beauty. Instead of fear, fill me with peace. In our own personal times of prayer, however brief they might be, and wherever they take place, it can be good to start with our own walk with God and spread out to encompass our fellow travellers throughout the world, their joys, concerns, and needs.

The vast majority of these prayers do not appear elsewhere on the pages of this website.

For this new morning; its joys and sorrows, highs and lows, triumphs and failures, laughter and pain. But more than this; your presence with us, grace and peace, wholeness, freedom to speak your name. For this new morning we give you thanks.

Gracious God, may you be found not only in quietness of prayer, ocean’s edge or mountain peak, but in the bustle of everyday life; in children’s laughter, conversation, a beggar’s bowl, a busker’s song, market hall or production floor, sparkling eyes, a smile, a tear, lover’s embrace, high five, a hug, the struggle of increasing years. May you be found in pain and joy, gain and loss, for you are there, around, within, if we have eyes to see.

You are the potter, Lord, and in your skilful hands even the unlikeliest of clay becomes a thing of beauty and useful, bringing glory not to the pot, but its creator. So take these lives, this clay, and in your loving hands transform and make us into what we long to be; made useful, Lord, for you.

May your voice be heard, a sharp blade cutting through the wisdom of a world that struggles to separate truth from lies. May your voice be heard, not just from pulpits but on factory floors where potential prophets await your Spirit’s empowering. It was meant to be a Christian utopia. Now this Nigerian community is helpless against rising seas.

The coastal Nigerian community of Ayetoro was founded decades ago and nicknamed “Happy City,” meant to be a Christian utopia that would be sinless and classless. But now its remaining residents can do little against the rising sea .

Buildings have sunk into the Atlantic Ocean, an increasingly common image along the vulnerable West African coast. Old timber pokes from the waves like rotten teeth. Shattered foundations line the shore. Waves break against abandoned electrical poles.

For years, low-lying nations have warned the world about the existential threat of rising seas. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, struggles to respond. Some plans to address shoreline protection, even for Ayetoro, have come to nothing in a nation where corruption and mismanagement is widespread.

Prayers against the rising sea are “on the lips of everybody” in the church every Sunday, according to youth leader Thompson Akingboye. But they know the solution will require far more.

Even the church has been relocated away from the sea, twice. “The present location is now also threatened, with the sea just 98 feet away,” Akingboye said.

Thousands of people have left. Of those who remain, Stephen Tunlese can only gaze from a distance at the remnants of his clothing shop.

Tunlese said he lost an investment of eight million naira, or the equivalent of $5,500, to the sea. Now he adapts to a watery future. He repairs canoes.

“I will stay in Ayetoro because this is my father’s land, this is heritage land,” he said.

The Mahin mud coast where the community is slipping away has lost nearly four square miles, or nearly 60% of its land, to the ocean in the past three decades.

Researchers studying satellite imagery of Nigeria’s coast say a number of things are contributing to Ayetoro’s disappearance.

Underwater oil drilling is one reason, according to marine geologist Olusegun Dada, a professor at the Federal University of Technology in Akure who has studied years of satellite imagery. As resources are extracted, the ground can sink.

But he and colleagues note other reasons, including the deforestation of mangroves that help anchor the earth and the erosion caused by ocean waves.

“When we started coming to this community, then we used to have fresh water,” Dada said. Today, the freshwater ecosystem is transforming into a salty, marine one.

The transformation is enormously costly in Nigeria. The World Bank in a 2020 report estimated the cost of coastal degradation in three other coastal Nigerian states — nearby Lagos, Delta and Cross River — at $9.7 billion, or more than 2% of the country’s GDP. It looked at erosion, flooding, mangrove loss and pollution, and noted the high rate of urbanization.

And yet dramatic images of coastal communities slipping away only capture Nigeria’s attention from time to time, as when the annual flooding occurs — another effect of climate change .

But Ayetoro residents can’t turn away.

“Ayetoro was like a paradise, a city where everyone lived joyfully, happily,” said Arowolo Mofeoluwa, a retired civil servant.

She estimated that two-thirds of the community has been slowly swept under the waves, along with some residents’ multiple attempts to rebuild.

“This is the third house we are living in, and there are some living in the fourth house now, and we do not have enough space for ourselves again. Four or five people living in a small room, you can just imagine how painful it is,” Mofeoluwa said.

“If you look where the sea is now, that is the end of the former Ayetoro.”

For the community’s traditional leader and head of the local church, Oluwambe Ojagbohunmi, the pain is not only in the loss of land but also “what we are losing in our sociocultural and religious identity.”

Some residents say even burial grounds have been washed away.

Early this year, the Ondo state government announced a commitment to finding “lasting solutions” to the threat to Ayetoro. But residents said that’s been vowed in the past.

It might be too late for efforts to be effective, Dada said. For years, he has hoped for an environmental survey to be carried out to better understand what’s causing the community’s disappearance. But that’s been in vain.

The Niger Delta Development Commission, a government body meant in part to address environmental and other issues caused by oil exploration, didn’t respond to questions from The Associated Press about efforts to protect the community’s shoreline.

The commission’s website lists a shoreline protection project in Ayetoro. A photo shows a sign marking the feat with the motto, “Determined to make a difference!”

The project was awarded two decades ago. Project status: “Ongoing.”

Residents say nothing ever started.

“Help will come one day, we believe,” youth leader Akingboye said.

Colorado news | “christian privilege” in colorado mountain town’s amphitheater fuels church-and-state storm, access for a religious group has been temporarily halted while dillon considers its next steps.

They now face potential lawsuits from pressure groups. Freedom from Religion Foundation attorneys are demanding an end to any preferential treatment for the Dillon Community Church . The rival First Liberty Institute sent a countervailing letter urging continued use, warning that recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions favor greater mixing of church and state.

Town staffers hit with multiplying requests from a diversity of religious groups to rent the amphitheater had proposed to shut down access by all outside groups and allow only town-sponsored events such as rock concerts. But town council members on June 11 rejected that approach and voted 5-1 to allow continued use by the church. Two members derided Dillon’s Denver-based contract attorney Kathleen Kelly for creating roadblocks after she raised constitutional concerns. Kelly resigned the next day.

The drama lit up chat sites — Friendly Athiest commenters decried “Christian privilege” — and led to a special meeting Wednesday night where town leaders faced a cacophony from residents. Then leaders accepted advice from a new attorney and back-tracked, temporarily prohibiting the use of the amphitheater by all groups until leaders set a legally defensible policy.

“There needs to be a separation of church and state. We cannot favor one denomination over another,” town manager Nathan Johnson said in an interview. “Now with the popularity of the venue we have more and more people reaching out. Everybody wants to be down there,” he said.

“If we are going to open up the amphitheater, we have to open it up for everybody.”

For more than 40 years, Dillon leaders have let the Dillon Community Church, a non-denominational Christian organization that owns a building a few blocks away, run evangelical “outreach” events appealing to Colorado high country visitors.

The amphitheater was built in 1993 as a low-key community band shell. Town officials have transformed it into one of the nation’s trendiest concert venues by investing $10 million, including a $1 million grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs , for an overhaul completed in 2018. Seats on a grassy hillside look out on the blue waters of Lake Dillon, a Denver Water reservoir, and majestic snow-splotched mountain peaks. Town officials charge a $25,000 fee for promoters of town-sponsored concerts. The venue holds up to 3,656 people. Town-sponsored activities also include country line dancing and yoga.

But religious worship is now canceled.

Dillon Community Church officials had lauded town leaders’ initial stance. “We are grateful that the council voted down the new policy that would limit all non-profit organizations that are not city-sponsored,” their posting said.

Senior pastor Jim Howard said Friday he’s confident town council members will sort out future access. “If they say we can’t use it while they figure out the legalities, we’ll stay in our building. We definitely don’t want a lawsuit,” Howard said.

The church paid a $1,100 annual rental fee, town officials said, and Howard said his 220-member church draws 300 to 800 people to the Sunday worship events.

Church members have mobilized. “Dillon Community Church should be grandfathered into whatever contract. They’ve been here for over 40 years,” church representative Wendy Myers told leaders at the packed special meeting. “It attracts an incredible number of our visitors who come to the county every single summer and love coming to church.”

She and others advocated opening the amphitheater to all religious groups. Former council member Tim Westerberg supports that but also spoke out against new council members’ political tactics. “They don’t seem to care about what the community thinks. They don’t seem to care about what their attorney says. They don’t seem to care about what the Constitution says. It’s just damn the torpedoes full speed away, bulldoze ahead our agenda.”

Problems around prayers in the amphitheater arose earlier this year when other religious groups, including a Jewish synagogue, Native American tribes, and people of various faiths planning weddings asked to rent the facility, Johnson said. “Everybody is attracted to the lake, the natural beauty of the lake,” he said.

“It’s a dilemma because an expectation has been set” in allowing the Dillon Community Church events.

When other religious groups requested access, “we put them on hold,” he said. “That’s what started this conversation. We haven’t told anyone ‘no’ – at least that I’m aware of. We want to have clear and definitive direction from the town council on what is allowed and not allowed in this setting.”

If Dillon officials excluded any other religious group, members of that group could file a civil rights lawsuit, said Madeline Ziegler, staff attorney for the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation, which has filed a legal petition seeking town communications with the Dillon Community Church and other groups to explore a possible lawsuit.

Dillon’s practice has sent “a signal to the town residents that their government prefers Christianity and that Christians will be treated better than other people in this town. That’s not a message that the people’s representatives should be allowed to send,” Ziegler said.

Dillon could avoid a lawsuit by setting a formal policy that includes “a welcoming and inclusive message that all are welcome and equally allowed to use the town’s facilities,” she said.  Otherwise, town leaders would be acting to ensure “the continued dominance of one church that has the backing of the town over all other religious organizations.”

Attorneys with the Texas-based First Liberty Institute, a conservative Christian legal organization devoted to”restoring religious liberty,” have prevailed in cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, where justices have decided that “history and tradition” must be considered in determining whether government is too intertwined with religion.

Senior attorney Lea Patterson, in her letter sent Tuesday, encouraged Dillon leaders “to continue to allow the church to rent the amphitheater” so as not to invite a lawsuit.

Finding space for religion in Colorado increasingly presents challenges. Soaring real estate prices mean church groups can be hard-pressed to afford buildings, said Jon Stavney, director of the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments , which supports local leaders. “Look at the cost of housing. If you are a church, it makes sense to use public space at a reduced cost,” Stavney said.

In the Eagle Valley west of Vail, the Redeemer church rents space for Sunday worship at the public Brush Creek Elementary School .

For elected leaders, deciding to end a longstanding public worship tradition such as the Dillon Community Church’s use of the town amphitheater can be politically perilous because leaders in small towns typically have to face down residents in grocery aisles, he said.

“If I were in their shoes, and this entity had been using a public space for a long time, I would have some loyalty to the history of that group using that facility.”

Here’s what the Christian right wants from a second Trump term

Religious conservatives see opportunities for fresh gains after a series of victories during Trump’s first term. Rights advocates see a dangerous blurring of church and state.

Donald Trump’s presidency delivered to Christian conservatives some of their most coveted goals: Hundreds of sympathetic judges joined the federal bench. The U.S. Embassy in Israel moved to Jerusalem. And the center of gravity on the Supreme Court shifted firmly to the right.

Since Trump lost his reelection bid, they have claimed additional successes, with Republican-run red states enacting legislation that restricts transgender care and limits the books that can be taught in school or borrowed from the library. The Supreme Court in 2022 ended the legal right to abortion . Last year, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), an evangelical Christian who has said his worldview is the Bible, became speaker of the House.

But far from declaring victory, those who advocate for a more pronounced role for hard-line conservative Christian doctrine in American public life are actively planning to enact a fresh wave of changes in a second Trump term. Should Trump reclaim the presidency in November, they say, it would represent a historic opportunity to put their interpretation of Christianity at the center of government policy.

To advocates for civil, women’s and gay rights, the proposals represent something else: a threat to basic freedoms and a dangerous blurring of boundaries between church and state.

Among the proposals being pushed by the Christian right’s various groups and leaders:

• Removing the words “gender” and “abortion” from federal program documents, as well as the related funding.
• Imposing new restrictions on abortion pills, perhaps through the authority of the Food and Drug Administration.
• Carving out greater exemptions to antidiscrimination laws intended to protect LGBTQ+ people.
• Establishing a more visible role for Christianity in public schools, including more prayer led by both teachers and students.

Trump advisers have stressed that outside groups and allies do not speak for the campaign and its policy plans. But Trump has made politically conservative Christians a bedrock of his base and has signaled he remains attuned to their priorities, even as many in the community appear prepared to back him no matter what specific promises he makes.

In 2016, Trump had to overcome the suspicion of conservative Christian leaders that came with being a twice-divorced celebrity who had publicly backed abortion rights and had never exhibited any particular religiosity. He picked Mike Pence , the evangelical Indiana governor, as his running mate in part to assuage worries he wasn’t sufficiently committed to their cause.

In 2024, Trump — who was convicted last month of falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to a porn actress and director — is considered a proven protector and champion of conservative Christians. He has been afforded wide latitude even when he breaks with their cause, as he did this spring when he declined to endorse a national abortion ban.

“This is not a naive trust — it’s a trust based on a track record,” said Texas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress, an enthusiastic Trump supporter. “I think what evangelicals agree with is his general narrative that America would be better off if we return to our Judeo-Christian roots. What that looks like — people are willing to give him great leeway on how it would be implemented.”

This year, there is no single issue that galvanizes the Christian right in the way that overturning Roe v. Wade once did, some community leaders said. But Trump has aggressively signaled to conservative Christian voters that their policy preferences remain a high priority.

Trump has said he will create a special Justice Department task force for investigating anti-Christian discrimination cases. He has vowed to halt federal programs deemed to promote gender transition and has threatened to pull federal funding from schools that do so. He has also told evangelicals that he would enable them to wield “power at a level that you’ve never used it before.”

“We have to bring back our religion,” he told an association of religious broadcasters in February. “We have to bring back Christianity in this country.”

In April, Trump referred to Election Day as “Christian Visibility Day, when Christians turn out in numbers that nobody has ever seen before.” The phrase was a play on President Biden’s acknowledgment of Trans Visibility Day, which this year fell on Easter.

The former president recently went so far as to personally advertise a $59.99 King James Bible, saying, “All Americans need a Bible in their home. … We must make America pray again.”

Asked about Trump’s election-year message to conservative Christians, a campaign spokeswoman accused Biden of waging “a years-long assault on Christianity.”

“President Trump will restore and respect the Christian conservative values of faith, family, and freedom, end Biden’s discrimination against Christians, and stand up for religious freedom, as he proudly did in his first term,” Karoline Leavitt told The Washington Post in a statement.

Biden, a practicing Catholic who regularly attends Mass, has vowed to protect religious freedom and pointed to some of Trump’s policies — especially a travel ban on people from several majority-Muslim countries — as violations of that value.

The Biden campaign said in a statement that Trump and his allies would “rip Americans’ rights away.”

“In Trump’s America, women will live in fear of having their pregnancies monitored or facing punishment if they have an abortion; teachers are told what books they can teach in the classroom and grown adults who they can love and marry,” said Biden campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa. (Prominent Christian conservatives said in interviews that they did not expect action from Trump to roll back the legality of same-sex marriage, even though they remain deeply opposed.)

Analysts say the political advances of the Christian right in recent years mask broader declines for the movement.

Stephen Prothero, a scholar of religion’s role in American politics and society, said Christian conservatism has become in many ways indistinguishable from the secular MAGA political movement, leaving few clear leaders and many divergent goals.

If Trump wins and the policies conservative Christians seek are enacted, Prothero predicted a decline in Christianity in the United States at a time when the nation has been rapidly secularizing. Partisan politicization of religion is driving Americans away from it, he said, and that will continue.

“The religious right is the pawn, and MAGA is the king,” he said.

Sixty-two percent of Americans say they are Christian , Pew Research found last year, down from 90 percent in the 1970s. Conservative Christians, experts on U.S. religion and politics say, are not defined by any one denomination or group but can include everyone from Christian nationalists to social or theological conservatives.

The biggest and most reliable core of the political religious right are White evangelicals, who Pew in 2023 found are 14 percent of the U.S. adult population. Of that group, 76 percent told the research firm PRRI last fall that they would vote for Trump if the election were that day.

In some cases, the policy aims of the Christian right are laid out in lengthy and specific policy papers by groups populated by former Trump administration staffers and confidants. In others, their aspirations are imprecise, more about asserting what they see as lost cultural power.

Among the policy documents compiled by prominent Christian conservative groups is Project 2025 ’s “Mandate for Leadership.” The document is the product of dozens of well-known groups and was published by the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Since its publication, Trump spokespeople have repeatedly said groups including Project 2025 do not speak for the campaign and its policy plans. Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, said the goal of the project is “building a governing agenda, not just for next January but long into the future.”

The document, compiled with multiple people and groups who worked in and with the Trump administration, calls for erasing terms including “abortion,” “reproductive health,” “gender” and “gender equality” from “every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists.”

“The next conservative President must make the institutions of American civil society hard targets for woke culture warriors,” reads the mandate, which says promotion of “transgender ideology” is akin to pornography and should be treated as a crime.

Project 2025 suggests closing the Gender Policy Council that Biden established in 2021 to advance gender equity and equality in areas including health, gender-based violence and education. The mandate also calls for Trump to reinstate the ban he established on transgender people in the military, which was overturned by Biden. And it calls for the next administration to “rescind regulations prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, and sex characteristics.”

Gillian Branstetter, spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union’s Women’s Rights Project and LGBTQ & HIV Project, said the approach is aimed at undermining protections for people who are discriminated against based on their sexual orientation or gender.

“They don’t want to affirm the existence of gender or gender identity,” Branstetter said. “It’s about our access to health care that protects our lives, protections at school, protections in the workplace.”

Roger Severino, head of the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services under Trump and a contributor to Project 2025, said in an interview that a top priority is reversing Biden moves that he argued are forcing religious conservatives to support or participate in activities that “violate their beliefs.” Examples he cited include federal agencies that require honoring people’s pronouns of choice or federal rules that say transgender people must be allowed to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity.

On abortion, Severino wants the FDA to collect more data on the health outcomes for women who use abortion drugs.

Project 2025 calls for the FDA to reverse its approval of such drugs. It also says a long-dormant 19th-century federal law called the Comstock Act, which makes it illegal to mail anything “intended for producing abortion” — including advice on how or where to obtain one — can be enforced. GOP lawmakers have written court briefs this year saying the act shouldn’t be disregarded and threatening pharmacy chains with enforcement if the chains keep selling abortion drugs.

The “Dobbs decision,” Project 2025 says, “is just the beginning.”

Trump campaign spokeswoman Leavitt said Trump “supports the rights of states to make decisions on abortion” and backs exceptions to bans in cases of rape and incest and for the life of the woman. Trump said this spring that he would make a statement on abortion drugs in a couple of weeks, but never did.

A priority of a segment of the Christian right surfaced this week when representatives of the Southern Baptist Convention, the country’s second-largest faith group, approved a resolution condemning in vitro fertilization . Trump has said he supports access to IVF.

Speaking at a Washington Post Live event last week, longtime conservative Christian lobbyist Ralph Reed warned the GOP and Trump not to weaken their antiabortion efforts.

“Look, President Trump is my friend and I’ve strongly supported him,” said Reed, who leads the Faith and Freedom Coalition. “But I would encourage the Trump campaign to proceed with great caution in sending a message of retreat when it comes to treatment of the unborn.”

Conservative Christian leaders stressed that they share other GOP voters’ top concerns, especially on immigration, and support Trump’s call for the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants and ideological screening of newcomers.

“If you don’t like our religion — which a lot of them don’t — if you sympathize with the jihadists, then we don’t want you in our country and you are not getting in,” Trump said in a speech in New Hampshire last fall.

In addition to policy changes, some Christian right leaders say they are looking to Trump for his rhetoric, which they say stands out for his willingness to speak about Christianity with praise and exceptionalism.

“He didn’t make any secret [when he was president] about the fact that he believed Christianity to be probably the premier religion in America,” said Darrell Scott, an Ohio pastor and former member of Trump’s informal White House evangelical advisory group. “I would just hope that he continues that outspokenness.”
