By Kristie Parker

9 Travel Websites with Stellar Color Schemes

We’ve compiled a list of 9 travel agency websites that brilliantly use color to match their brand and make their content pop. We even included one from our own portfolio .

All of the examples include hex codes so you can use them as inspiration for your own website.

Pack Up & Go

Why we like this color palette:.

The standout orange brings a burst of energy, which fits perfectly with the brand’s spontaneous vibe. The clean white offers a fresh, open feel. The calming mint green paired with the deeper green balances things out, giving a sense of diverse landscapes and well-rounded adventures. All in all, it’s fun and adventurous, but still feels grounded – matching the brand perfectly.

The warm terracotta shade is instantly evocative of Italy’s rustic charm and sun-baked streets, pulling you into memories of quaint towns and Tuscan sunsets. The soft greys serve as a neutral backdrop, allowing that beautiful rustic color to truly shine. Then there’s the rich, earthy brown, which feels like a nod to Italy’s deep-rooted history. Combined with the clean white, it feels like a well-curated photo album – some highlights, some understated moments, but all undeniably Italian.

The primary olive green immediately connects with the essence of exploration and nature, perfectly aligning with the adventurous spirit of the brand. The softer shades of cream and muted beige evoke a sense of calm and sophistication. Paired with the deep forest green, it gives a rich, earthy feel, which speaks to Niarra’s commitment to impactful and meaningful travel. With a foundation of clean white, the palette collectively feels purposeful and fresh, mirroring the brand’s travel experiences.

Together, these colors combine the urban sophistication of New York with the contemporary flair that draws travelers to the city.

Travel Local

The standout teal resonates with the idea of fresh adventures and new horizons, aligning with the brand’s emphasis on authentic experiences. The deep navy adds depth and trust, emphasizing the reliability of the local experts.

The soft, near-white hue offers a neutral background, allowing the bolder colors to pop. All together, these shades capture the essence of connecting with genuine, on-the-ground expertise while embarking on global travels.

420jamaica tours

The vibrant yellow, reminiscent of Jamaica’s sun-soaked beaches, partners well with the deep green, channeling the island’s lush landscapes and rich cannabis culture. The striking red injects energy, echoing the vibrant music scene.

Together, these colors not only capture the essence of the all-inclusive cannabis vacation tours but also subtly nod to the iconic Jamaican flag, grounding the brand in its roots. The palette perfectly balances relaxation, cultural immersion, and the unique ganja-themed experiences that 420jamaicatours promises.

Alpaca Your Bags

Why we like this palette:.

The soft blush pink immediately resonates with romance, perfect for those looking to plan weddings and honeymoons. The different shades of muted blue convey intimate tropical beach intimate getaways. The clean white backdrop provides breathing space, much like the company’s approach to stress-free wedding planning.

Overall, the palette feels romantic yet clear-cut, aligning perfectly with the brand’s specialty in crafting memorable wedding and honeymoon experiences without the fuss.

The sophisticated gold hue speaks directly to luxury, giving an immediate sense of premium, bespoke travel experiences. The dark, grounding greys and blacks resonate with the brand’s depth and vast offerings, from Polar Regions to the South Pacific.

The light neutral provides a serene base, aligning with the travel agency’s commitment to responsible travel. Together, this palette perfectly balances luxury with responsibility, showcasing Jacada’s unique approach to travel.

The Concierge Group

The soft peach and blush tones scream romance and luxury, fitting for couples looking for that dreamy honeymoon getaway. The subtle aqua blue reminds us of pristine waters and tropical escapes, aligning perfectly with the luxurious overwater bungalows and beachfront stays mentioned.  Altogether, the palette feels dreamy and upscale, encapsulating the promise of an unforgettable honeymoon journey.

The Impact of Color Choices on Travel Websites

After diving into these 9 travel agencies, we’ve seen how each palette, with its careful blend of neutrals and standout shades, can set the tone for a user’s experience.

The world is filled with bright, vibrant and eye-catching destinations that can make any trip a colorful experience, both literally and figuratively. With that in mind, Lonely Planet is proud to celebrate them in a brand new book called Travel by Color , the first and only travel guide by color palette, which features 400 stunning photographs of amazing destinations and events across all different shades. From the deep reds of Tambopata National Reserve’s scarlet macaws to the verdant greens of the Peak District’s Rolling Hills, the book charts rich and diverse places to make any traveller feel alive. Here’s a selection that will allow you to travel through every color of the rainbow.

Autumn morning at the Cathedral

Red: Red Square, Moscow, Russia

An iconic symbol of Russia built by order of Ivan the Terrible, St Basil's Cathedral stands proudly at the southern end of Moscow's imposing Red Square. Constructed from 1555 to 1561, the building's idiosyncratic colorful domes sit atop amber-red towers. It's a rich, colorful display, and elsewhere, the square truly lives up to its name, with the dominating color of red showing up in the fortress-like structure of Lenin's Mausoleum, Kazan Cathedral, the State Historical Museum and The Tsar's Tower. Red Square is often closed for celebrations and rehearsals, something to note if planning a visit there.

New England tree

Orange: New England, USA

The destination for autumn leaf-peepers, New England's fall foliage is a vibrant display of nature at its most breath-taking. Scarlet and sugar maples, birch, beech, dogwood and oak all contribute to the parade of captivating colors, and for outdoor enthusiasts, it’s the perfect place to visit . Top spots include Smugglers Notch in  Vermont , and Crawford Notch in New Hampshire, protected forest areas where glaciers came through during the last ice age, providing spectacular viewing.

glória funicular

Yellow: Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s yellow funiculars are a pleasurable and practical way to explore different areas of the picturesque city, and they sure beat walking up all those steps. Connecting Restauradores Square downtown with Rua San Pedro de Alcántara in Bairro Alto, the Glória Funicular (or Elevador da Glória) is the most popular of the city’s three funiculars, and offers astounding views of the surrounding area. As well as what they offer, the vehicles’ distinct, vintage look with their bright yellow exteriors have become iconic.

kamakura

Green: Kamakura, Japan

Much more than a day trip from Tokyo, Kamakura is a laid-back, seaside town that offers tranquillity and peace of mind. Hokokuji Temple boasts a lush forest of 2000 moso bamboo that lie just behind the temple’s main hall, which houses an impressive Buddha beyond the Zen temple gate. Kyoto’s Arashiyama grove is equally enchanting, as is the Sagano Scenic Railway route to it – also known as the Sagano Romantic Train.

Blue lagoon hot spring spa. one of main tourist attraction in Reykjavik, Iceland

Blue: Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa with warming water that is supplied by the nearby Svartsengi power station. While popular with tourists, it is an essential stop when visiting the country, and soaking in the hot nurturing water contrasted with the crisp, fresh air in winter is a truly calming experience. With a combination of 70% sea water and 30% fresh water, the Blue Lagoon is a perfect 38°C and includes natural mineral salts, rich blue-green algae and silica mud. You may even be lucky enough to catch a light show in the sky while there.

berber man in Sahara

Indigo: The Sahara

Along with camels and water, clothing is an essential detail for the Tuareg people when crossing the Sahara, and over time indigo blue has emerged as a popular choice for tagelmust turbans and veils. Protecting wearers from wind, sun and sands, the headwear is exclusive to Tuareg males on reaching maturity. There are many ways for visitors to immerse themselves in experiences across the Sahara , with each one proving to be a rewarding and unique experience in its own right.

lavender fields provence

Violet: Provence, France

It’s no wonder photographers flock to Provence and the Côte d'Azur every summer to capture the stunning fragrant fields of purple and violet lavender that the area has become famous for. One of the best places is along the D8 road in the direction of Plateau de Valensole, where you can see lavender fields and sunflowers right next to each other. The flowers are also found in numerous places in Drôme, such as Saou et Montbrun-les-Bains as well as in front of the famous Abbey of Sénanque . As well as that there’s ancient olive groves, clifftop roads and even snow-capped mountains.

Holi in India

Rainbow: India and Nepal

One of the world's most vibrant and powerful displays of color, the hindu festival of Holi is a celebration of spring and love beautifully expressed with tonnes of color each year throughout India, Nepal and, increasingly, parts of Southeast Asia too. If you want to take part, be prepared to be covered head to toe with colored paint, be it in powder or liquid form – the latter usually delivered via water guns and balloons.

The Best Four Colors to Have in Your Travel Instagram

Having these colors in travel photos can draw the most engagement — here's why.

color tour traveling

Certain colors have the ability to draw viewers in, particularly when it comes to travel photography .

To identify which of these colors are drawing the most interest, the Pantone Color Institute , influencer marketing platform Fohr , and Visit Carlsbad , teamed up to analyze the most engaged photos from 75 different influencers who had a following of 50,000 or greater, finding the four most common colors as part of their 2019 Colors of Travel Study.

The hues have been named according to the images they draw reference to and the emotions they evoke, with Visit Carlsbad creating a range of activities where visitors to the California beach stop can experience the shades.

They are: Rose Dawn (described as a soft and dusty pink), Ethereal Blue (an expansive blue hue often seen in open skies), Ocean Depths (a calming shade resembling the color of the sea and deep lagoons), and Harvest Gold (a warm yellow reminiscent of fall flowers and sunsets).

Rose Dawn was given its name thanks to its association with the dawn and early morning sunrise, when a comforting sense of peace and quiet can be felt. The color, which is also found in florals, is associated with natural elements and a natural healthy glow, tying in thoughts of wellness, according to Laurie Pressman, Vice President of Pantone Color Institute.

Ocean Depths is a teal color that fuses green and blue, showcasing hues often found in the ocean, on coastal shorelines, and in deep lagoons. The color combines attributes from both blue and green, including the feelings of calm often associated with blue and the feelings of soothing and healing attributed to green.

Ethereal Blue is reminiscent of clear blue skies, giving the feeling of endless opportunities to get outside and explore nature. The color is one we often see daily, which is why Pressman says the color also produces a sense of calm and tranquility when viewed.

Meanwhile, Harvest Gold is a shade often seen when fall arrives and golden leaves and florals abound. The color also draws reference to sandy beaches and images of spices used to create culinary delights.

"Color has always been a part of why we travel; the desire to 'see' a new place is rooted in a mental image we've already conjured." Grace Murray, Vice President at Fohr, said in a statement. "We are drawn to land and cityscapes that look drastically different to our own."

In celebration of the findings, Visit Carlsbad has created an interactive map showcasing new culinary offerings, wellness treatments, and outdoor experiences offering the new Colors of Carlsbad palette.

These include everything from spa treatments like a red algae body scrub at Ocean Crest Spa and a facial incorporating Patagonian seaweed at The Spa at Omni La Costa , to culinary offerings like golden scallops at Jeane et Jolie and cocktails and beer offerings in pink, blue, and yellow tones at locations like Jeane et Jolie , Chandler's , Ocean Pool Bar and Grill at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort and Spa , Barrel Republic , and Park 101 .

Visitors can also see these colors in the flower fields and lagoons found in Carlsbad, in addition to the beaches where water activities like jet skiing and kayaking await.

Travel info, the u.s.a.’s best fall colors are here.

Marvel at our seven million acres of autumn brilliance.

See the Upper Peninsula’s stunning fall colors

Ask fall color seekers about their favorite destinations in the United States and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is on their lists. (Our fall foliage repeatedly makes USA Today’s 10Best.) Seven million acres of tree coverage, the pristine shores of three Great Lakes, picturesque historic lighthouses, mirror-calm inland lakes, tree-lined rivers and streams and roaring waterfalls make the U.P. a fall getaway no other U.S. destination can match.

When to see the best fall color

The leaf show begins when our daylight hours get shorter and the night air grows crisp in mid-September. First, there’s a splatter painting of scarlet reds and sunny yellows amid acres of green. Then, almost overnight, the hardwood forests explode in reds, oranges, yellows, purples, browns and greens. The colors intensify and peak by mid-October. But this breathtaking show continues for a couple more weeks, especially along tree-canopied roads near the shorelines of Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior.

Check our weekly color reports

To help plan your trip, check our weekly color reports here for our eastern, central and western regions.

Drive these top 10 fall color tours

Below are 10 of our favorite fall color routes across the U.P. (nearly 1,500 gorgeous, leafy miles). Hop in your vehicle, and prepare to stop repeatedly to take photos. The views get more spectacular with every turn.

Tour 1 | Tour 2 | Tour 3 | Tour 4 | Tour 5 | Tour 6 | Tour 7 | Tour 8 | Tour 9 | Tour 10

Tour 1: Keweenaw Peninsula

Western U.P. | 100 Miles | Fill a full day with stops

The Keweenaw Peninsula is an incredible destination all four seasons but it is positively WOW! during the fall. The foliage will take your breath away.

Start your tour in Houghton/Hancock. Home to Michigan Tech University, these two towns have a college vibe with a choice of eating and drinking establishments, outdoor recreation and lodgings. Crossing the Portage Lake lift bridge marks the beginning of your Copper Country adventure.

Follow US-41 north to historic Calumet, once the center of the booming copper mining industry. Take in the Victorian-era architecture, and stop by the Calumet Theater , a National Historic Landmark. While downtown, go to the Keweenaw National Historical Park visitor center to learn the location of over 20 heritage sites that tell the stories of the men and women who came to mine copper in this northernmost Michigan peninsula.

Continue north on US-41, taking time to stop at Eagle River Falls and Eagle Harbor Light Station and Museum Complex . The next stretch east on M-26 to Copper Harbor is one of the most scenic in Michigan. Winding up Brockway Mountain Drive brings you to some of the most photographed fall vistas in the U.P. If you can spend the night, this area offers some of the best stargazing, including the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park .

From there, make your way south on US-41, stopping for a Delaware Copper Mine Tour . Then, enjoy lots of fall colors as you wind your way to the pristine beach at Bete Grise you will arrive in 11 minutes). Take Lac La Belle Road east then make a slight right on Bete De Gris Road. After time at the beach, make your way south along the Keweenaw Bay coast following Bete De Grise Road. Take a sharp left and follow Gay-Lac La Belle Road to Gay. From there, follow Traprock Valley Road west, turn right onto Bootjack Road, then left on Calumet St. Hop on M-26 at Lake Linden and enjoy the scenery as you return to Hancock/Houghton for a restful overnight stay.

Tour 2: Porcupine Mountains

Western U.P. | 225 miles | 4.5 hours minimum

Houghton is your launch point for this popular fall tour. Head southeast on US-41 to Baraga County . If you treasure fall color, a side trip east of Baraga will take you to Point Abbaye. Follow US-41 east to L’Anse then north on Skanee Road to Townline Road. Locals will tell you that this drive up the Abbaye Peninsula rivals any “leaf peeping” drive in the nation.

Return to Baraga and make your way west on M-38 to Ontonagon County . It is home to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park — the Midwest’s “last great wilderness.” It’s 60,000 acres of gorgeous vistas of Lake Superior’s stunning shores, roaring waterfalls, miles of rivers and streams, 35,000 acres of untamed old-growth forests and 90 miles of hiking/backpacking trails. If you can’t stay for more than a day, visit at least one of these three lookouts — Lake of the Clouds, Copper Peak and Summit Peak.

From the Porcupine Mountains, go south along CR-519. See Manabezho , Manido and Nawadaha Falls on the far west of the Porcupine Mountains near Wakefield Township. Go east from Wakefield on M-28 to Bergland on the northern tip of Lake Gogebic , the largest natural inland lake in the Upper Peninsula. If you can arrive at Bruce Crossings at nightfall, you can decide if the ghostly Paulding Mystery Ligh t is real or legend. If you prefer to complete this tour in daylight, take M-45 to see Rockland’s Victoria Hydroelectric Dam , the Old Victoria Restoration or  Minesota Mine . From there, go north on M-26, jogging west on M-38 to Greenland to visit Adventure Mining Company , where you can take an easy walking tour, rappel down a shaft or sign up for a drilling and blasting workshop. Return to M-26, enjoying the foliage in the Baraga State Forest and arriving in time for dinner and resting for tomorrow’s adventures in Houghton.

Tour 3: Iron Country

Western U.P. | 221 Miles | 4 hours minimum

Start at Ironwood, at the far west of the Upper Peninsula. If the weather is coolish, stop by the Stormy Kromer factory for a free tour and pick up a cap and other Stormy, stay-warm U.P. gear. Then head east on US-2 to Bessemer. If you have time, extend your tour by going north on the National Black River Scenic Byway Waterfall Tour . This will be a highlight of your Western U.P. travels. Along the approximately 14-mile Black River Road, you can see five impressive waterfalls: the Great Conglomerate Falls , Gorge Falls , the barrier-free Potawatomi Falls , Sandstone Falls ’ rock formations and Rainbow Falls . This byway will also take you to Copper Peak for an incredible, 360-degree leaf-viewing experience.

If a waterfall trip doesn’t work into your schedule, continue east on US-2 to Watersmeet. Four miles west of Watersmeet, explore the Ottawa National Forest’s Sylvania Wilderness on CR-535. The old-growth forests and 34 named, pristine lakes are home to a wide variety of animal and plant life. Return to US-2, and go east to Watersmeet jogging north on M-45 to see Bond Falls then backtracking to Watersmeet.

When you reach US-2, continue east to Iron River. Hikers and ORVers both claim the best way to see fall color is on Iron County ’s hundreds of miles of trails. Nearby Caspian is home to the Iron County Historical Museum . This is the U.P.’s largest local museum with over 100 iron mining and logging exhibits, 26 buildings, two art galleries and a gift shop. Return to US-2, taking it to Crystal Falls where you will head north on US-141 to Covington, then west on M-28 to Bruce Crossings, then Bergland at the northern tip of scenic Lake Gogebic . Take M-28 southwest to Wakefield then follow US-2 west. You will be back in Ironwood in less than a half hour.

Tour 4: Marquette

Central U.P. | 177 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

A good basecamp for this tour is Marquette with its vibrant downtown, dining, entertainment and recreational choices and a variety of lodgings. Start your adventure following Deutsch St. northwest for a half hour along the Lake Superior coastline to Big Bay. Nearby, the 9 miles of Big Bay Pathway trails and Big Pup Creek Falls give you close-up views of autumn’s magnificence.

Return to the junction of US-41 and go southwest to Negaunee and Ishpeming, where you can catch lunch or a craft beer. Mountain bikers can see fall colors from an exciting singletrack RAMBA trail between the two cities. For a less strenuous leaf-viewing experience, visit Black River Falls when you’re in Ishpeming.

From Ishpeming, go east on BUS M-28, taking several small jogs until you reach County Road 480 then south on M-533 to Gwinn. From there, go east on M-94 through Chatham and within minutes, you will enter the Hiawatha National Forest for your fall color feast. Turn right to follow M-28E/M-94E to Shingleton. Once in Shingleton, turn around and take M-28W/M-94W. Take M-28W into Munising, your gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Some of Munising’s fall color highlights include Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises until mid-October, Miner’s Castle and seeing the 16 waterfalls in Alger County . For an unforgettable wilderness adventure, take the ferry to Grand Island (it runs until Oct. 10) and go hiking, mountain biking and kayaking surrounded by jaw-dropping beauty.

On your return trip from Munising to Marquette, prepare to see some of the most stunning Lake Superior scenery going west along the coast on M-28.

Tour 5: Wild River & Lake Michigan Bays

Central U.P. | 127 miles | 2.5 hours minimum

Start this fall adventure in Iron Mountain by making your way to Pine Mountain Ski Jump , where you can take in some of the best fall vistas in the U.P. At the base of the ski jump is the free Upper Peninsula Veterans Memorial . If you have the stamina, walk up the 500 Pine Mountain Steps . This half-mile vertical climb is the largest outdoor staircase in the U.S. It brings you to the ski jump — the largest artificially made ski slide in our country, too.

From Iron Mountain, take US-2 east to Norway, then go south on M-8 to Piers Gorge Road and park. There is a 1.5-mile trail that offers spectacular views of the Menominee River , its churning rapids, ledges and waterfalls.

Return to US-2 and go east to Hermansville where you can get out of your vehicle and immerse in the colorful woods. The Hermansville to Escanaba multi-purpose rail trail traverses 25 miles. Choose how far you want to go hiking, mountain biking, horseback or ATV riding. Highlights along the trail are three bridges with photo-worthy overlooks.

Go back to US-2 and take it east to Spalding. Turn south on US-41 and go to Menominee, a historic town on Lake Michigan’s Green Bay at the Michigan/Wisconsin border. Catch lunch, then go north on M-35 along Lake Michigan to Escanaba. On the way, you will pass through Escanaba River State Forest where you can enjoy plenty of leaf viewing. Once in Escanaba, stay a day or two and enjoy these local fall color tours .

Tour 6: Lake Michigan

Central & Eastern U.P. | 144 miles | 2.5 hours minimum

Some fantastic pull-offs along this Lake Michigan coastal tour will bring you back again and again. In Escanaba, pick up some Swedish Pantry Bakery cardamon bread and to-go coffee or tea, a bag of Sayklly’s chocolates or Dobber’s pasties for the road. Then take US-41 north to Rapid River on US-2. Visit Rapid River Knifework s, and learn about the craftsmanship of their sports and kitchen knives.

Continue east on US-2. At Garden Corners, take M-183S to Fayette to explore an iron-smelting boom town turned ghost town, Fayette Historic State Park & Townsite . You can easily spend a half-day here walking the 3.5 miles of scenic trails through hardwood forests, along the bluff and the townsite. Kayakers will enjoy Snail Shell Harbor and its scenic limestone bluffs.

Another don’t-miss side trip is visiting the “Big Spring,” Kitch-iti-kipi in Palms Book State Park north of Manistique. Nicknamed the “Mirror of Heaven'' by the Ojibwe, Michigan’s largest natural spring reflects its surroundings on crystal-clear waters. It takes approximately 16 minutes to go west on County Highway 442, north on County Road 455 and then north on M-149.

Return to US-2, and continue east to Epoufette and the Cut River Bridge/Roadside Park . The scarlet red, amber and brilliant orange leaves are only rivaled by the Lake Michigan waterfront.

Just when you think you can’t be awed anymore, US-2 will take you to St. Ignace, the second-oldest, continuously inhabited city in Michigan. Steeped in Native American and European history, this is a good stopover destination. But what will amaze you is the Mackinac Bridge that spans 5 miles over the Straits of Mackinac connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. You must stay to see the sunset and the bridge gleaming with lights at night.

Tour 7: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore/Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Central U.P. | 160 miles | 3 hours minimum

Fall Color Tour 4 gives you a taste of how spectacular the scenery is along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , but take this tour for the full-blown experience. Motorcyclists rank County Road H-58, from Munising to Grand Marais, one of the top rides in the country. In the fall, it is off-the-charts beautiful whatever vehicle you are driving.

From Munising, take County Road H-58 to E. Munising Ave. Continue on Adams Trail to County Road H-58E/Au Sable Trail. Go north to Sullivan’s Landing on the shores of Lake Superior. For the next few miles, take time to visit the picturesque Au Sable Light Station , the Log Slide Overlook and the Grand Sable Lake Scenic Overlook .

Once you arrive at the quaint village of Grand Marais, enjoy the shops, hunt for agates on the beaches and walk the Sunset Boardwalk. A unique attraction is the Pickle Barrel House Museum , a 16-foot-tall barrel that was once a summer home for a well-known illustrator, William Donahey, creator of the famous Teenie Weenie characters. In the fall, it is open on weekends in September or by appointment.

From Grand Marais, go south on M-77 to Seney. If you are up to more wilderness sightseeing, continue south on M-77 to Germfask’s Seney National Wildlife Refuge . You will find many places to hike and paddle, but the Strangmoor Bog National Landmark is part of the Superior Birding Trail. This time of year, you are likely to see American Bitterns, Northern Saw-whet Owls and Blackburnian Warblers among many other migratory birds as you meander through.

Complete the tour by returning to Seney, taking M-28 west to M-94 and north to Munising. If you want to end your day stargazing or seeing the Northern Lights, the mile-long Miners Beach on Lake Superior, off County Road H-28 near Shingleton, is one of the top picks.

Tour 8: Tahquamenon Falls/Whitefish Point

Central and Eastern U.P. | 172 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

This is a tour where the scenery gets better with every turn. Plan to add extra time for frequent photography stops!

Start the adventure in Grand Marais and take M-77 south to Seney. If you haven’t seen the Seney National Wildlife Refuge , continue south to Germfask to hike, paddle and watch for wildlife . From Seney, take M-28 east, then north on County Road 405 to Newberry.

If you have the time, take the six-and-a-half-hour Tahquamenon Falls Train and River Boat Tour from nearby Soo Junction. The boat captain will talk to you about points of interest few people can see from their vehicles. You can also hike to a private viewing area to see the mighty Tahquamenon Upper Falls, one of the largest falls east of the Mississippi River.

From Newberry, continue the fall color tour, driving northeast on M-123 through Newberry State Forest and the Tahquamenon Falls State Forest to Paradise. There you can visit the Tahquamenon Falls State Park to see the Upper and Lower Falls. For another only-in-the-UP experience, stop by for a craft brew and a snack or meal at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub at Camp 33 , the only brewery housed on Michigan state land.

From Paradise, continue north on Whitefish Point Road to Whitefish Point . This is one of the premier places to see hundreds of varieties of migrating birds following their ancient flight paths south in the fall. It’s also the site of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum with its emotionally powerful exhibits, light station, lightkeeper’s quarters and rock-strewn beach. Open until Oct. 31, you will leave with a deeper respect for Lake Superior and those who have sailed it.

Make your way back to Paradise, then south on M-123 to County Road 407 and north to Deer Park. Then take Deer Park Road west until it becomes County Road H-58. Pull over often to catch the Lake Superior views.

Tour 9: Whitefish Bay

Eastern U.P. | 81 miles | 1.5 hours minimum

This is one of our shortest fall color tours, but there are lots of staggeringly beautiful trees in the Hiawatha National Forest and along the Lake Superior shoreline to enjoy. Begin in Paradise and go south on M-123, then left on M-28 and left on M-221. Stop in Brimley or Bay Mills Point to take in the ever-changing landscape of Lake Superior. Brimley State Park has an observation platform to watch the passing freighters going and returning from the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. You also can see Canada from there.

After a jaunt up to Bay Mills Point, turn right onto West Lakeshore, travel 19 miles along Whitefish Bay then another 9.4 miles on Lake Superior Shoreline Road to the M-123 junction, and drive north to Paradise.

Tour 10: Lake Huron to Sault Ste. Marie

Eastern U.P. |168 miles | 3.5 hours minimum

When people cross the Mackinac Bridge from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula, they feel a sense of freedom and carefree adventure. This tour brings out the explorer in you! Start in St. Ignace at the base of the 5-mile-long suspension bridge, and continue north on I-75 to historic Sault Ste. Marie , the oldest city in Michigan and one of the oldest in the United States. Be sure to visit the Soo Locks , the ultimate international and Great Lakes freighter-watching destination. This is also a good place to catch a meal or ice cream snack, visit shops and historic museums, and get outside and play on recreational trails.

Continue the tour, leaving Sault Ste. Marie by going south on M-129, then left on M-48E to DeTour Village on the St. Marys River. While in the village, stop by the DeTour Passage Historical Museum and Maritime Park . Learn about the area’s rich maritime history, and get front-row-seat views of giant freighters.

If you can extend your visit, catch a ferry across to Drummond Island , the second-largest island in the Great Lakes. This island is an adventure waiting for you to join in on the fun. It is renowned for its ORV trails, kayaking, hiking, golfing and peaceful relaxation amid the changing trees.

As you continue your fall color tour, take M-134 west from DeTour Village to I-75 along the northern shores of Lake Superior. Stop frequently at the beaches, and catch a meal in Cedarville or Hessel. Paddling around the Les Cheneaux Islands , an archipelago of 36 small islands, is a fall treat — especially at sunset. Both Hessel and Cedarville are replete with shops and art galleries featuring a variety of locally made crafts and gifts!

When you reach I-75, go south to St. Ignace. Stay over. There are lots of things to do in this historic town tomorrow.

Where to stay to take in the U.P.’s brilliant forests

Throughout the U.P., you can find lodgings, resorts and campgrounds with the rates and amenities that fit your fall color tour plans. September to mid-October are popular times to visit, so to get the dates you want, book your stay ahead. We can’t wait to share this beautiful peninsula with you soon!

14 Inclusive Destinations That Are Exceptionally Hospitable To Travelers Of Color, According To People Who Have Made The Trip

As a woman of color, I know not all destinations are welcoming to people who look like me. These places are *not* that.

Michelle No

BuzzFeed Contributor

I love traveling (and appreciate it all the more after a year of not being able to do so!). But as a woman of color, I know that not all places are hospitable to people who look like me.

Author with trekking poles standing on a mountain trail

I have the bad travel experiences to back it up. 🙃

So recently, I've started wondering: Which destinations are safe* for travelers of color?

*I define "safe" as destinations that are queer-friendly, fat-friendly, religiously tolerant, and/or welcoming to people of color and women. Of course, I know not all destinations can tick off all boxes, but I am seeking the most all-encompassing and intersectional definition of "safe" as possible.

To get the best answers, I turned to four travel experts who have all traveled extensively and have first-hand experience visiting these destinations.

View this photo on Instagram

I spoke with:

 • Kareemah , a  YouTube Travel Content Creator  and founder of the  Hijabi Globetrotter .

 • Marinel de Jesus , founder of Brown Gal Trekker and Equity Global Treks .

 • Annette Richmond , founder of From Annette With Love and Fat Girls Traveling .

• Tomiko Harvey , founder of Passports and Grub and VP at the Black Travel Alliance .

It's important to note that none of these experts can speak for everyone reading this — their recommendations are based on *their experiences alone*, and traveling to the same destination might feel different for you.

If you've had a traumatic travel experience, I know how hard it can feel to feel safe venturing out into unknown places. My hope for this list is that it serves as a helpful jumping-off point for anyone researching for their next travel adventure.

And if your future travel destination isn't on this list, don't let it deter you from taking that trip! Other people's opinions never stopped me from having fun, and it shouldn't stop you either. Just remember to do your research before you go.

And one last note: We can all be better about making travel a positive experience for everyone. As Tomiko Harvey reminded me, people across the travel industry have a responsibility to watch out for their own prejudices. "The onus is on the tourism board, the hotels, and the restaurants to ensure the employees have bias training. Because we all have [bias]," she says.

Without further ado, here are 14 of the best safe destinations for travelers of color:

1. cusco, peru.

A tourist in Peru

Apart from hosting Machu Picchu, one of the world's New Seven Wonders of the World , Cusco is also one of the most hospitable places to travelers, according to Kareemah . "The first place that's ever made me feel safe is Cusco, Peru," she said. "I was wearing a headscarf, and I never felt people staring at me rudely."

The sights here range from hiking Rainbow Mountain and trekking to Salkantay to trying world-class Peruvian cuisine and experiencing the ancient ritual of a coca leaf reading.

2. Istanbul, Turkey

View of Istanbul with the seaside in the background.

Historically, Istanbul served as a center of trade along the Silk Road and played a big role in East-West relations. Today, the city is known for its astounding architecture, a cosmopolitan population, a thriving nightlife, and of course, historical sites — like Hagia Sophia — that harken back to its days as Constantinople, the capital of a huge empire.

"They're used to people visiting; that's the history of their country," said Kareemah . "There's a mix of people from Europe and Asia, so you won't get weird looks if you look 'different.'"

3. Chefchaouen, Morocco

Man walks up the blue steps of a narrow street in the blue-washed Chefchaouen, Morocco. This town is known for being painted in exclusively one color (blue)

Known as the "blue city," this visually striking destination will have you living behind your camera the entire time you're there. Everything from the roads, doors, and buildings are all colored blue, and it's worth taking at least a day or two to wander around and take it all in.

As a small Moroccan village situated in Northern Africa, it's again a locale that's frequented by a huge mix of global travelers, and as long as you can remember to dress conservatively, it's a safe place for women to travel to, says Kareemah .

4. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

When the pandemic started, Marinel de Jesus found herself unexpectedly stranded in Mongolia. She ended up staying there 294 days, but didn't once feel unwelcome. "As a nomadic people, Mongolians have an interesting perception of travelers," she said, referring to the fact that a third of Mongolians practice seminomadic herding . "They take care of you; they don't want you to be alone. It's almost like they join you on your journey back home." Even as the only Filipina and foreigner in her region, she said she was greeted with kindness everywhere she went.

Start your adventure in this pastoral country in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and then head to the mountains as quickly as you can. In the summer, you'll find a beautiful, remote landscape, tons of hiking opportunities, and amazing horseback riding.

5. Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia

Man with hiking backpack climbs the mountains of Tbilisi

From the majestic mountain views and magnetic Black Sea beaches to the hearty comfort food, what's there not to love about the country of Georgia ? Apparently, you can add warm hosts to that list. As de Jesus puts it, "I was told by someone in Georgia that here, they see travelers as sent from heaven. You're like a good luck charm. And I felt it. I felt very welcome." She said the level of trust between her and the locals felt mutual, and that that's what led her to moments where she almost "forgot her skin color."

While de Jesus admits that being Asian might have made her experience in Bhutan a bit easier, she says that this country on the edge of the Himalayas is generally pretty welcoming. Perhaps, she explained, it's because Bhutan is difficult to visit. (In fact, Bhutan charges a hefty $200 per day entrance "fee.")

In addition, Bhutan is considered one of the happiest countries in the world — if not the happiest country in the world. A Buddhist peace-loving attitude might have something to do with that.

If you're willing to pay, you'll find surreal Buddhist monasteries hanging on mountain cliffs, amazing vegetarian food, and Himalayan trekking.

7. Mexico City, Mexico

When the pandemic started, Annette Richmond left Thailand in a hurry for her home country of the US, thinking it would be safer. "That was a mistake," she said, citing the continued police brutality against Black people.

In Mexico, Richmond says she's found a home base for the first time. "There's a huge Black community here," she said. "It was really nice to be around beautiful Black people. You don’t often get that when you’re traveling abroad."

Besides the sense of community, you'll also find elegant architecture, some of the best food in the world, historical archeological sites, and a world-renowned art scene.

And there's another priceless pro to being in Mexico: "If I ever see the police here, I am not fearing for my life. You can’t put a value on not fearing for your life when you see the police."

"As a fat person, I love India because you'll see all types of women — thin women, older women, fat women — wearing crop tops; various sizes are more accepted," said Richmond . She did get a few requests for photos, but never with a negative intent. She also said she never experienced microaggressions — like the catcalls she received in another city in Europe.

She recommends that anyone touring India try authentic cuisine and dancing. "The music makes you want to dance, and I learned some moves during a local cooking tour. Bollywood films will keep you in the theater for a few hours (intermission included), but the dancing and singing make it worth it."

Home to the Taj Mahal, incredible religious monuments, delectable Indian cuisine, and fine beaches, India is a vast country that'll appease athletic mountain climbers and food tourists alike.

9. Thailand

A street food-vending woman smiles broadly at the camera. She is surrounded by various ingredients and holds a serving of noodles

Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for novice or beginner backpackers, beach lovers, and street food aficionados. It's got everything from world-class beaches and picturesque islands to ancient ruins and a thriving night life — all at budget prices. "I love the metropolitan city vibe and the Black community here. Thailand can be fatphobic, but it's actually more inclusive for me than the States," Richmond says.

Overall, it's a place where many will feel at home. "Thailand has a welcoming reputation," de Jesus sums up. "The people are kind and friendly."

10. Tokyo, Japan

Japan has one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the world, and gun violence is extremely rare ( in 2014, the country had just 6 gun deaths, compared to 33,599 in the US ). This fact alone makes the country safer to visit for some travelers, notes Richmond.

For her, the biggest roadblock was a language barrier, but with the help of a pocket Wi-Fi router , she was able to enjoy the country's many spoils, including the freshest seafood, Tokyo Disney, the Harajuku district, and friendly locals.

11. Amman, Jordan

A woman floats along the Dead Sea facing up, and reads a magazine as she floats

Jordan is an accessible point of entry to this part of Western Asia (referred to by some as the Middle East). There are desert landscapes and the Dead Sea, but for history buffs, there's also the world’s oldest continuously inhabited place (the Amman Citadel ), the Temple of Hercules , and tons of hikes.

"I was nervous because as a woman, I dress pretty liberally. So I went into Jordan thinking I'm going to be oppressed, but it didn’t feel that way at all," says Richmond . "Black people: Get out to Jordan. It’s beautiful; it’s lovely. And women: Don't be afraid to go."

12. Praiano, Amalfi Coast

"Amalfi Coast is the first destination that I fell in love with that is absolutely stunning," said Tomiko Harvey . "Everybody was so friendly, and I didn't feel unwanted or unwelcome."

Often referred to as one of the best destinations in the world , the Amalfi Coast is truly a postcard come to life. It's got mountain cliffs that are sure to inspire, boat rides that'll have you feeling like a million bucks, and seafood and Italian cuisine that'll make the whole trip worth it.

13. Olomouc, Czech Republic

Aerial view of Olomouc, showing a grand plaza with various charming architecture on show.

This charming, walkable town is pretty unknown outside of Czech Republic, but it's the epitome of a quaint European city. It's known for its architecture, baroque fountains, delightfully smelly cheese, beautiful churches, and its many breweries.

Harvey loved the respite Olomouc offered from the touristy areas of Czech Republic. "If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Prague and still see the architecture and beautiful scenery, it’s absolutely gorgeous." She also said the only time she felt that being a foreigner was a challenge was in the train, when she couldn't get by just on her English.

14. Turks and Caicos Islands

Located southeast of Florida and the Bahamas, this set of islands is known for its crystal-clear blue waters, scuba diving, snorkeling, and luxurious resorts.

For Harvey , it's also her favorite family-friendly destination where she celebrates her daughter's birthday every year. "Everybody is just so welcoming and friendly. The people that live there — they really want you to have a good time at their destination."

How Color Affects You When You Travel

By Cassie Shortsleeve

seaside resort at the adriatic coastline in Italy between Ravenna and Rimini

Whether or not you realize it, color is a huge part of your psychological makeup. As humans, we have emotional reactions to the crackling oranges and reds of a roaring fire on a ski trip , or to the still blues of the sea—color can make us feel calmer, angrier, or more energized. It also provides important cues about our surroundings: Even in a new city, the red of a stop sign tells us to stop; the pigment of a fruit can inform us as to whether or not it's ripe.

“We constantly have neurons firing off when we see different colors,” says Jill Morton , director of the International Color Research Institute, based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

And travel provides a unique way to look at color, too—a break from places you're so used to seeing that you might, by now, overlook. In many ways, color could also be considered an entry point to travel. In a new environment, you might be more attentive to color, spotting sights others—even locals—might miss, says Bevil Conway, Ph.D., an expert in the neuroscience of color at the National Eye Institute . This could give you a sharper eye on a safari or a more thrilling experience upon touchdown in a tropical locale. As you spend time somewhere new, you’ll eventually adapt to your environment, expanding your visual repertoire, helping you to see a place differently as you once did as a newcomer, which could in turn lead to a deeper understanding of it. "There are adaptation effects that take place within a few seconds, other effects that take place over minutes and hours, and other effects that take place over years," Conway says.

Of course, it’s naive to think that one color in all of its many shades and hues, existing both naturally and artificially, will affect every person the same. After all, color associations are often built into us and vary based on age, gender, location, and life experience—a food you ate and disliked as a child, say, or a memorable orange sunset . But there are some somewhat universal reactions to certain hues. Here's how color affects you when you travel, and how to get the most out of the scenes around you—anywhere on the planet.

Jodhpur the Blue City.Rajasthan India

Jodphur is known as India's "blue" city.

The hues of Iceland's Blue Lagoon , Santorini's bright shores, the Maldives' turquoise waters: The cool color of the ocean or the blues of the sky can be calming, partly because of the associations we have with being outside, says Donald Hoffman, Ph.D., a professor of cognitive science at the University of California, Irvine. Evolutionarily, a source of water is key to survival, too, potentially triggering positive emotions.

Seek it out: When a travel bucket list leaves you stressed, take a break and swim in the ocean on a sunny day. You’ll get a double dose of blue’s serenity paired with the physiologic relief that being submerged in water— without the force of gravity —provides.

Traditionally associated with everything from fire and blood to danger, hunger, and lust, Conway says “red is unquestionably the most salient color out there.” In languages with only a few words to denote color, red is almost always one of the colors with a word . In its brightest forms, as is true for any vivid color, red could also have an energizing effect, says Morton.

Seek it out: Look for red in your travels, and strike up a conversation about the hues you're most interested in, whether it's present in ceramics and pottery throughout Beijing's art district , street art in Berlin , or a vibrant pepper at a food market in Nice. “Red is the color that, reflected in language, we care the most about,” says Conway.

Palouse WA

Green is often seen as restorative.

Found in places like botanical gardens , rainforests , Lowcountry waterways , or the leaves of palm trees, green is often seen as a restorative color. Even 40-second “micro-breaks” of green can increase attention, leaving you feeling refreshed, research finds .

Seek it out: Visit a city park or a national one , or head to a nearby forest. Up your enjoyment by doing something that reminds you of positive experiences— running through a tallgrass prairie or a shrubby oceanfront path, if you have fond memories of destination road races, for example. Do this sans your cell to truly soak in the experience. (To really lean into the whole mindfulness-in-nature thing, see if your hotel offers forest bathing .)

The brightest color of the visible spectrum is often found in things that want to be seen, like the taxi cab . Specifically, optic yellow—the color of a tennis ball—is one of the most visible shades out there, says Hoffman. “In contemporary culture, yellow is also associated with the sun and happy faces,” says Morton. But it’s a love-hate color, too, she notes, with a high proportion of people who dislike the color, perhaps due to associations (bananas, if you don't like them).

Seek it out: Plan a leaf-peeping trip: One study that tracked people’s color preferences throughout the season found that while dark yellow is one of the least preferred colors overall, come autumn, preference for the color peaks—especially among aficionados for the season, says Karen Schloss, Ph.D., the study’s author, who researches color cognition. Seeing those colors might conjure up positive feelings about other fall-related activities that make the season so special.

Historically, purple has been associated with royalty and authority, perhaps because it is exceedingly rare. “Purple is an extra-spectral color, so there is no purple in the spectrum,” says Conway. (Even violet is a slightly reddish blue, he points out.)

Seek it out: Look for it in nature— purple sands in Big Sur, California , seashells at beaches worldwide, bluebells in Belgium’s Hallerbos Forest . “Purple requires both long wavelength and short wavelength simultaneously, and in nature, statistically that’s just not going to happen very frequently,” says Conway. Because it's so rare, seeing it in nature could make you feel rewarded, making for a richer travel experience and potentially cementing the experience in your mind.

7 Travel Inspired Color Palettes

Sunflower Yellow Color Palette

Wish You Were Here

Curating my Wish You Were Here Print Collection has been such a fun experience for me. Most importantly, it brought me back outside – visiting new places and photographing scenes for fun. And, it has also re-ignited my desire to create (which is an unexpected happy by-product of this journey).

During one of those little creative bursts, I thought it would be fun to create color palettes that pull tones from some of the beautiful scenery I’ve come across so far.

Below, you’ll find 7 travel-inspired color palettes utilizing all kinds of fun bold colors for you to incorporate in your own designs.

SUMMER SANDS + COOL BLUES

This cool coastal palette is inspired by the Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica I Print. With refreshing, clean tones, this palette would be perfect for a welcoming entryway or a relaxing bedroom retreat.

This color palette is the last we’ll be sharing today but it’s easily the most interesting and unusual one. Travel & Tourism Colour Schemes within Web Design

Colour is such a fundamental part of the way we perceive the world that we often take it for granted. As professional designers, we understand the importance of using the correct colours – whether it’s for marketing or even a web design in Manchester .

Vivid impressions are what every person on vacation is seeking. That’s why within the travel industry, the aim is to amaze consumers online and create a colour palette that conveys brightness straight to a visitor.

This is why one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s arsenal is colour. It can either make or break a design; it can be the determining factor when engaging online viewers.

Travel and Tourism Colour Scheme

There are specific colours that are universally liked across the board. They can be great for building brand loyalty and positive brand sentiment, which will help you close more business down the line.

Yellow: The colour of sunshine, yellow is associated with happiness and joy, which is what most customers experience when booking or researching a holiday. Super cheerful and accessible, it is ideally what you want your audience to feel.

Blue: The most versatile and universally liked. Blue has been shown to inspire feelings of trust, making it a heavy favourite among brands. This is also another factor you want to achieve if you’re a business within the Travel and Tourism sector, you want customers to trust you, but also get excited. Excitement = good business.

Colour Schemes that Increase Brand Sentiment

Some colours can be easily incorporated into any website as they are universally liked across the board. A light blue colour palette or a navy blue colour palette are some of the examples of colours that are appealing to all generations and audiences. Some companies choose to match customer expectations by using their industry’s common colours; others have found that going against the grain is an effective way to make an impression.

Contrast in colours

Every shade of colour has a set opposite — an “arch-nemesis.” You can use the colour wheel to do this, locate the colour on the opposite end of the circle.

Yellow is often a part of modern colour schemes and while it can be incorporated into almost any website, it is particularly appealing to younger audiences. It should be used as an accent colour to highlight certain elements and to add some personality to your website design .

Vibrancy of colours

Each colour evokes specific moods: the brighter warm colours (red, orange, yellow) tend to energise a user and make them more alert, while darker cool shades (green, blue, purple) tend to be more relaxing and tranquil. The contrast between the vivid blue background and yellow-orange accents immediately draws the eyes to the right places of a web page.

Website colour schemes that increase trust

Do you want to be viewed as a stable and trustworthy brand? Then use blue; it has been shown to increase feelings of trust and means your consumers can put their faith in you. That’s why it’s such a heavy favourite as over 53% of corporate logos feature the colour blue. Many business websites use blue because the colour naturally makes us think about things that are safe, secure, and comforting

Your website colour palette should not only reflect your brand but also appeal to your audience. When it comes to designing a website and creating maximum impact for your business, there’s more to the colour palette chosen than meets the eye

3 great fall color tour destinations.

color tour

Even though autumn means the end of consistent sun and warmth in Michigan, at least we have the changing leaves and their breathtaking vistas of color to enjoy as we say so long to summer. In fact, Michigan is routinely one of the most-ranked states for “best-of” color tours by such sources as Fodor’s Travel, USA Today, and others. To help you choose the perfect path for your fall color tour charter, here are three exceptional areas in the state for fall color and more.

1) The Upper Peninsula

In autumn, every road you drive down in the U.P. offers eye-popping color. To narrow down the options, UPtravel.com has mapped out great tours ranging from 90-220 miles. For example, Fall Tour 10, the tour nearest the Mackinac Bridge, begins in St. Ignace and moves north to Sault Ste. Marie , which celebrating its 350 th anniversary in 2018 and has plenty to see and do in the fall.

Next, it’s south to the picturesque towns of Pickford, Goetzville and Detour Village at the most eastern tip of the U.P. where the St. Mary’s River connects with Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac. From there, head west through the Great Waters region of the U.P. Make some stops in Cedarville and Hessel, home of the nationally-known Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat Show, before returning to St. Ignace.

This 150-mile color tour is just one of many U.P. color tours to choose from. Keep in mind that peak color in the U.P. is dependent on weather and temperature conditions.

2) Manistee County

Manistee County knows how great its autumn is and folks there have already prepared fall tours your charter group can take, complete with detailed, downloadable maps. Check out each of the four self-guided fall color tour options that await.

The always-popular and breathtaking Lake Michigan Coastal Tour along M-22 was named the Best Scenic Autumn Drive in the USA by USA Today in 2015. The tour takes you north along the Lake Michigan coast from Manistee through Frankfort, Empire, Glen Arbor, and Leland, all the way to Northport near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, then south through beautiful Omena and Suttons Bay to wonderful Traverse City. You will see some of Michigan’s best through every one of the 150 miles and enjoy many opportunities to stop, shop, eat and enjoy autumn’s splendor all around you.

For a shorter tour, try The Manistee River Valley Quilt Tour, a picturesque trip that winds its way for 30 miles through the countryside past historically significant quilt patterns displayed on the sides of barns and other structures amongst the glory of the valley’s autumn leaves. Or maybe you’d prefer the Inland Fall Tour that travels Manistee County for 150 miles through towns like Wellston, Mesick, and Thompsonville, with potential stops at wineries, distilleries, and historic spots where you can learn more about our state.

Finally, for a blend of coastal and inland sites, the 125-mile Coastal Fall Tour offers a little bit of everything from farm markets to Arcadia Bluff’s overlook to cideries and wineries. If your group wants a beautiful and fun color tour, you can’t go wrong with Manistee County.

3) Southwest Michigan

One of Michigan’s most beautiful and bountiful areas is the southwest corner, from New Buffalo to historic St. Joseph and north to quaint South Haven. Thanks to swmichigan.org , your group can enjoy a preplanned three-day color tour starting out on the West Michigan Pike , the state’s first continuous paved road; it was completed in 1922 and stretches all the way from the Indiana state line to Mackinaw City at the tip of the mitten.

The area not only has Lake Michigan shoreline and beaches with massive dunes and bluffs, but also a long history of hospitality manifested in the many shops, bakeries, restaurants, fairs, and festivals. The entire area is full of fruit, from rolling hills of apple, pear, and peach orchards to vineyards brimming over with grapes for a variety of wines. There is also plenty of natural splendor to enjoy at parks, gardens and nature preserves along the way. Check out Michigan’s great southwest and have a wonderful trip.

No matter where you want to go or what you want to do there, Indian Trails wants to help you make it the perfect trip for everyone. Learn more about our charter bus services and amenities and request a quote today .

Which Color Represents Travel and Tourism?

By Michael Ferguson

Travel and tourism are industries that are all about capturing the imagination of people. One of the best ways to do this is through visual representation.

Colors play an essential role in creating an emotional connection with the audience, and they can be used to convey a particular message or mood. In this article, we will explore the different colors that represent travel and tourism.

Blue – The Color of Serenity

  • The logo of Carnival Cruise Line has yellow elements
  • The branding for Club Med resorts includes yellow accents

Purple – The Color of Luxury

Purple represents luxury, elegance, and sophistication. It’s a great color for high-end travel companies that offer luxury vacations such as cruises, private jet tours, or five-star hotels.

  • The branding for the Ritz-Carlton hotels includes purple elements
  • The website of Silversea Cruises uses purple in its design

Red – The Color of Adventure

Red represents adventure, excitement, and energy. It’s a great color for travel companies that offer adventurous activities such as bungee jumping, skydiving, or white-water rafting.

a house with a large front yard

This Stunning 1920s Birmingham Home Is a Love Letter to the Joys of Travel

Architect James Laughlin teamed up with Heather Chadduck to restore his Philadelphian Georgian home to its original glory.

The architect has an affinity for all things Federal and Colonial architecture and knew before stepping inside he wanted to restore the home to its original 1920s spirit and Philadelphia Georgian elegance. However, before he could get to the cornice restoration and create period-appropriate millwork, he was forced to split the renovation into two parts with the first to simply bringing the home back to basics in nearly every way.

“I came in knowing the home had been derelict for about 15 years and had fallen into a state of disrepair because the owner had relocated,” Laughlin says. “When we walked in, it was full of debris practically up to the ceiling.”

There ended up being 67 dumpsters worth of garbage, which had caused the floor to sag through the years, requiring foundational repair and plaster restoration. But his love and vision for the home endured, and partner in crime Heather Chadduck Hillegas was with him from the moment the house was purchased to help bring it back to life for the modern age on the inside as Laughlin reimagined its next era of architectural prominence.

a bedroom with a bed and a mirror

“We took a very reverent approach to the architecture to breathe new life into it, from custom doors that were milled in profiles of the originals and all the hardware was missing so we had solid brass hardware put in,” says Laughlin. “All of the selections we made were of quality and in the style of the '20s. Really, the goal was to have it be a new-old house.”

Chadduck, a longtime friend and colleague of Jimmy’s, came into the project with a strong sense of his aesthetic preferences and lifestyle. She knew he prefers a more neutral color palette and his decorating philosophy was more about celebrating a home’s architecture through its interiors, rather than treating the architecture as a hand that had been dealt. The first design feature Chadduck brought to the home was the dining room’s swoon-worthy sepia-toned Gracie wallpaper that evokes a well-traveled atmosphere, which became the perfect common thread for the rest of the home.

“I personally find so much inspiration in travel and there’s something really lovely about bringing your experiences back home,” says Hillegas. “Jimmy and I have traveled a lot together, and we went to Egypt a few years ago and had the most amazing time. We were on this boat seeing the Great Pyramids buying rugs off its deck and had to drag them home in tote bags, but now they are layered throughout this house. Every room reminds you of something special or hilarious that occurred on a trip.”

Relics of the dynamic design duo’s Egypt trip can be found throughout the home in the art, alabaster, and other decor such as obelisks and pyramids. However, the most transportive space in the home is the primary bedroom suite, as it was designed to evoke the feelings and textures of a five-star hotel from the linens to the florals and state-of-the-art bathroom (Laughlin’s favorite space). It manages to feel properly suited for a bon vivant on a grand tour a hundred years ago—or today.

a living room with a large window

While this home is certainly well traveled, it’s a far cry from being cluttered and maximalist. While Laughlin leans towards a clean, refined design scheme, it strikes a pleasant balance of formality and warmth. It also feels collected and peaceful to the eye, while boasting plenty of delightful contrasts. Hillegas packs an impressive design punch by leaning into texture, patina, and juxtaposition to create visual interest for one-of-a-kind spaces that are, as both Hillegas and Laughlin found of the utmost importance, “trend-averse” with an appeal to the most discerning of globetrotters in need of a respite.

In fact, Hillegas says she spent as much time thinking through what not to place in a room as much as how to fill it in order to create the symmetry and balance Laughlin was craving. The end product is a home rich in personal history, his fondest memories abroad, and joy from day one, while honoring the home’s 100-year legacy, allowing both property and owner to shine through. What more could you ask for?

“All of the house tells its own story and relates in some capacity to travel,” Laughlin says. “I give Heather so much credit for the styling, because no room feels staged. Every piece tells a story, and there is a meaning and spirit behind each item.”

While Laughlin has since sold the home (love can’t always last forever), he credits one of his favorite spaces, the book room, as an endless source of inspiration. Full of warmth and coziness thanks to the wood paneling and antique brick floor, the tiniest room of the house is a workhorse for the architect’s creative brain, as it houses 800 books on art, architecture, and travel, leading one to wonder what his next great undertaking may be.

The Best Colorado Snowmobile Tours

The same weather and terrain that make the Centennial State a skiing destination also make it a popular place for another winter activity: snowmobiling. With the help of traveler input and expert opinion, U.S. News identified the following Colorado snowmobile tours – all of which have knowledgeable and skilled guides – as the best available.

Like Colorado ski resort season, snowmobiling season typically runs from November to April, but specific tour companies' schedules may differ. Be aware that age restrictions for snowmobile operators and passengers vary among tour companies. And be sure to dress for the cold as most companies do not provide boots, scarves, neck gaiters, goggles or other gear beyond helmets.

In addition to private tours, Sage Outdoor Adventures also offers a Performance Snowmobile Tour, which travels a longer distance and costs more. Sage Outdoor Adventures encourages tour-takers to use their own transportation to reach their base lodge in Wolcott (about 30 miles west of Vail), but can provide pickup service in Avon, Beaver Creek or Vail at an additional charge. Note: Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Why South Dakota's Wind Cave National Park is a marvelous two-for-one special

color tour traveling

Wind Cave National Park may not be the only national park with a cool cave , but that doesn’t make it any less special.

“I think the caves are a little bit like people,” said Tom Farrell, chief of Interpretation at the park. “They're all a little different. They have their own story to tell.”

Wind Cave, for instance, is the sixth longest cave in the world and among the most complex.

“Larger caves (are) spread out over a larger area. We’ve got 167 miles of cave crammed under 1.2 square miles on the surface,” he said.

And that's not all there is to see at the Wind Cave. Here’s what else travelers should know about the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .

What is so special about Wind Cave?

“We have the best example of boxwork found anywhere in the world,” Farrell said. “I like to brag we had the best boxwork in the solar system because the Mars Rover sent back some pictures that kind of look like crude boxwork, but ours are better.”

He compared the honeycomb-like calcite formations hanging from the cave’s ceilings and walls to fragile peanut brittle.

“Unlike a stalactite and a stalagmite that could continue to grow if they had more water dripping on them, these things, once you break them, they're broken, so they’re very rare and very delicate,” he said.

How much does it cost to get into Wind Cave National Park?

It’s free to enter Wind Cave National Park, but there are fees for ranger-guided cave tours . Most tours cost less than $10.

Can you go into Wind Cave without a tour?

No. “It’s too dangerous,” Farrell said. “Either people would crawl off trail and get lost,or people could vandalize the cave, so to protect the cave and protect the visitor, you’ve got to go with a ranger.”

Guided tours range from the 30-minute Accessibility Tour to the Wild Cave Tour, “where we give you a hardhat, elbow pads and knee pads and take your crawling in the cave for three to four hours,” he said.

How big is Wind Cave National Park?

Wind Cave National Park spans roughly 34,000 acres above ground. Below the surface, its namesake cave extends at least 167 miles. Farrell said there are around 3,000 leads still waiting to be explored.

“We're gradually expanding and learning a little bit more about the cave,” he said. “It's an exciting place to be.”

Just don’t follow your GPS to get there.

“You will get lost,” the park’s website warns in bold letters. “Many GPS units locate the park visitor center north on South Dakota Highway 87. The coordinates for the Visitor Center are N43 33' 22" W103 28' 38".

The park is about 11 miles north of Hot Springs, South Dakota. The nearest commercial airport, Rapid City Regional Airport, is more than 60 miles away in Rapid City.

How long do you need at Wind Cave National Park?

“If it's just going to explore the cave, you could do it in half a day,” Farrell said. “If you're going to go hiking or whatnot, you definitely need at least a day.” There are more than 30 miles of trails in the park.

Travelers should note that the cave itself is closed this summer to allow for elevator updates. Instead of guiding visitors into the cave, rangers will lead interactive virtual tours in the park auditorium, allowing visitors with mobility impairment or claustrophobia to view parts of the cave they may never experience otherwise.

There’s plenty else to see above ground, including black-footed ferrets, prairie dogs, elk, and “a very unique bison herd.”

“This time of year, it's great because they have new calves that are cinnamon-colored,” Farrell said.

Additionally, new exhibits are expected to open at the park’s visitor center later this summer, sharing more of the Native history of the land.

“If you can't find something that you're passionate about here, you're just not trying,” Farrell said.

Who are the Native people of Wind Cave National Park?

More than 20 Native American tribes are historically tied to the land, according to the park:

  • Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation
  • Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe
  • Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma
  • Crow Creek Sioux Tribe
  • Eastern Shoshone Tribe
  • Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe
  • Fort Belknap Indian Community
  • Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma
  • Lower Brule Sioux Tribe
  • Lower Sioux Indian Community
  • Northern Arapaho Tribe
  • Northern Cheyenne Tribe
  • Oglala Sioux Tribe
  • Ponca Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma
  • Ponca Tribe of Nebraska
  • Rosebud Sioux Tribe
  • Santee Sioux Nation
  • Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate
  • Spirit Lake Tribe of Fort Totten
  • Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
  • Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation) Fort Bethold
  • Upper Sioux Community
  • Yankton Sioux Tribe

What are some fun facts about Wind Cave?

Farrell shared these five facts about the park:

  • For the Lakota people, this is their origin site where they emerged from underground and where bison were born into Lakota oral history.
  • Wind Cave National Park played an important role in helping save bison from extinction with the reintroduction of 14 bison from the Bronx Zoo in 1913.
  • Esther Brazell was hired as a park ranger at the cave in July of 1916, making her the first female park ranger in the National Park Service.
  • Wind Cave National Park is the sixth-oldest national park in the system and one of the oldest caves in the world, making it a place where one can be fully immersed in ancient earth.
  • This national park is still being explored. Cave explorers are continuing to find more rooms and passages.

I’m traveling to a taylor swift concert. do i need insurance.

Taylor Swift performs during the Eras Tour at Estádio Olímpico in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2024 Summer Olympics. The UEFA European Football Championship. Taylor Swift's European tour.

It's the summer of big events. And if you're traveling, big events can be big trouble.

"You may want to consider insurance for a concert, festival, sporting event, or other large-scale event," says Michael Giusti, an analyst with InsuranceQuotes.com.

A new survey by Faye Travel Insurance found 21% of summer travelers are attending a concert and 14% are traveling for a sports event like the Olympics or a soccer championship. Another study by Squaremouth.com revealed that 27% of respondents are traveling to a concert this summer and 25% are attending a sporting event. With people spending thousands of dollars to travel to a venue — and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars for an event ticket — you don't want to lose everything because of a delay or mishap.

Insurance can help, and when it comes to this summer's big events, there are actually several types of insurance worth considering.

"For special events, there may be some ticket insurance options available through specific ticket vendors," says Scott Adamski, head of global product development at Travel Guard . "But in the case that someone is traveling some distance to an event venue, a comprehensive travel insurance plan may provide additional protection."

In other words, there's insurance for your ticket and insurance for your trip. Let's review each of them.

What is event protection and how does it work?

If you're headed to any event this summer, you can get insurance that covers the event.

For example, Allianz’s Event Ticket Protector , which is offered through several ticketing platforms, can reimburse 100 percent of your ticket price, including taxes, convenience fees, shipping charges and other fees such as parking if you have to miss your event.

Event ticket protection, like travel insurance, only covers certain occurrences. They include an illness or serious injury, traffic accidents, airline delays, jury duty, mechanical breakdown, loss of job, and military duty.

"So if you come down with the flu before the Taylor Swift concert or jury duty delays your trip to the Olympics, you can at least find solace in being able to recoup your ticket costs," explains Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.

You can also get optional event ticket coverage when you buy travel insurance, says Angela Borden, a marketing manager at Seven Corners .

But there are important restrictions. Some event ticket coverage is only available through a ticket seller, and only at the time you purchase your tickets. And even if you buy travel insurance later, there are limits.

"You must add that coverage during what’s called the time-sensitive period, which is typically within 20 days of purchasing your ticket," explains Borden.

And the other biggie is that event ticket insurance doesn't cover everything. The cancellation or interruption must be for a covered reason as outlined in your plan. This includes unexpected events like an illness that prevents you from traveling or a natural disaster, notes Borden.

But there's another option that might offer you more coverage.

Does travel insurance cover special events?

Travel insurance can also cover special events. Trip cancellation and trip interruption coverages that are included in most comprehensive travel insurance policies typically offer coverage for tickets for concerts, festivals, excursions, retreats, theme parks, and other event tickets that you've paid for in advance.

"Travel insurance can absolutely cover the cost of nonrefundable tickets for events," says Jenna Hummer, a spokeswoman for Squaremouth.com . "You simply need to include the nonrefundable cost of those tickets as part of the trip cost that you enter when you’re searching for a travel insurance policy."

For example, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s (BHTP) ExactCare policy provides reimbursement for nonrefundable trip payments, including concert and sporting tickets, should a covered emergency such as illness, injury or a natural disaster force you to cancel. (ExactCare also protects you against common pitfalls including medical emergencies, flight delays and cancellations, and lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage — so you're protecting more than your Taylor Swift tickets.)

"Travel insurance can help protect your prepaid, nonrefundable vacation investments," says Carol Mueller, vice president at BHTP. "But I always recommend purchasing insurance as soon as you put your first nonrefundable dollar down on your trip."

That's good advice. The sooner you insure the trip, and the event tickets, the better you'll be able to insure. Some travel insurance policies will even cover pre-existing medical conditions if you buy the policy at the time you book your vacation.

What's the best insurance to buy when I'm traveling to an event?

If you're headed abroad for a special event, experts say you should strongly consider some kind of insurance.

"Getting the right insurance can give you peace of mind and protect your money when you go to considerable events like the Olympics or Taylor Swift's European tour," says Joe Cronin, president of International Citizens Insurance .

Here's some buying advice:

Read the fine print

Always a good idea with any consumer purchase, but now more than ever. Make sure you read the terms and conditions of your policy. And don't assume the policy covers everything. Ideally, it would at least include coverage for nonrefundable trip-related expenses. Also, pay attention to the criteria that must be met for the coverage to apply, says Adamski of Travel Guard.

Be careful who you buy your event ticket from

Remember, you can buy travel insurance that would cover an event up until the day before your departure. But where you buy the ticket matters, says Dan Skilken, president of TripInsurance.com . "Make sure you are buying from a ticketing agency or the actual event," he says. "If you purchase from a scalper, you may not have adequate receipts or fall under the general definitions of a travel supplier in the plan."

You can cover bad weather, too

One common misperception is that travel insurance covers loss of enjoyment, such as when your event gets rained out. It doesn't — but don't worry, there's coverage that can help. A company like Sensible Weather allows you to get protection for events such as golf tournaments or live shows and get reimbursed if rain or high temperatures are present during the experience. "We don't require customers to cancel or file a claim to be reimbursed," adds Nick Cavanaugh, CEO of Sensible Weather. "Everything is automated."

Bottom line: There are at least two ways to cover your summer events. But you have to be smart and read the terms and conditions of your policy if you want to be fully covered.
