How to Get a Job on a Cruise Ship: Step by Step Tips from a Crew Member

Wondering how to get a job on a cruise ship but don’t know where to start?

Say no more.

After working on cruise ships for three years, I’m here to break it all down for you, step by step, so you don’t have to spend painstaking hours researching.

With so little information online about working as a crew member on cruise ships, I know how frustrating it can be to try to break into the industry with no guidance.

But I’m here now and I’ve got all the answers for you.

In this guide, you’ll learn not only how to get hired on a cruise ship, but which websites to apply to and which recruiting companies are available in your country.

All aboard– full steam ahead!

About Me and How I Can Help You

A cruise ship crew member sits on a platform next to the ship's sign that says "Mariner of the Seas"

A quick intro about me: Hi, I’m Michelle, and I’ve worked all over the world since 2013.

With three years of onboard experience working on cruise ships , I know what it takes to land a job in this unique industry.

My time at sea has given me insight into the hiring process, onboard life, and the skills needed to excel in various roles aboard.

Besides my experiences with ships, I’ve been fortunate to come across job opportunities that have taken me to every continent, even working in Antarctica .

Needless to say, I’m quite familiar with securing travel jobs abroad .

10+ years ago when I began this journey around the world, there wasn’t much information online about how to get paid to travel .

Now, with nearly 70 countries and all seven continents under my belt, I’ve taken the guesswork out and am here to tell you exactly how, step by step, to turn your dream of working on a cruise ship, into a reality.

How to Get a Job on a Cruise Ship

An infographic/step by step guide for how to get a job on a cruise ship. 1- learn what working on cruise hips is like. 2- meet basic qualifications. 3- assess your skills and find the right onboard position. 4- research different cruise lines to find your best fit. 5- tailor your resume. 6- apply. 7- ace the interview. 8-receive offer of employment. 9- onboarding. 10- bon voyage.

Step 1: Know What Working on a Cruise Ship is like

Working on cruise ships means you get paid to travel.

Who wouldn’t want a job like that?

In my time working on ships as a cruise ship crew member, I got to visit 35 countries.

But it’s important to know the reality of what life onboard entails.

I’ve seen new hires come onboard only to realize– after leaving their former jobs, saying goodbye to family, and packing up their lives– that life on ships just isn’t for them.

So what’s working on cruise ships really like?

I’ve put together all the pros and cons of working on cruise ships , which is a great place to start in your cruise ship job search.

To sum up ship life:

  • You get paid to travel
  • Accommodations, meals, and medical care are covered during your contract
  • International work experience and connections
  • Potential to save the majority of your salary with few expenses
  • Work hours are long with no days off
  • Contracts can be 4-9 months long
  • You’ll probably have a roommate in a small cabin
  • The crew food options may be different from what you typically eat
  • You won’t always get to go into port every time the ship is anchored
  • You might have to pay for ship Wi-Fi

💡 Want to hear more about what life on ships is like? Check out this interview I did with my friend Charmaine.

Step 2: Meet Basic Qualifications

Once you’ve researched life on ships and decided this is still the right path for you, you’ll need to meet the basic qualifications that most cruise lines will require.

A sunset photo on the top deck of the Mariner of the Seas in port. The photo of the deck incudes empty lounge chairs under a pink and orange sunset with two other ships docked in port to the right.

Between Ages 21-50*

“*” because there are exceptions to this.

It is possible to get hired outside of this age bracket, but it can be more difficult.

The only crew members I’ve seen under 21 years old are usually entertainers.

But at the bare minimum, you need to be at least 18 for legal purposes.

For most other positions, there are educational and work experience requirements that typically aren’t found in adults any younger than 21 years old.

Now if you’re on the other end of the age spectrum, it’s just a matter of how healthy you are.

Another requirement for working on ships (which I’ll talk about later) is that you pass the medical exam.

The further away from 50 you are, the harder it usually is to not only pass the medical but also fulfill your role in onboard emergencies as a crew member.

I will say that I know many people over 50 years old working on cruise ships– so don’t lose hope.

You just need to make sure you are physically healthy enough, both in real life and on paper, to live and work on cruise ships.

Language Fluency

For most cruise lines, you’ll need to have a high fluency of English as this is the international language of the seas.

You should be able to not only communicate politely with guests in English, but also able to report emergencies clearly and quickly.

Some cruise lines also require a second or third language ability due to the itinerary or guest clientele.

Keep this in mind when you are applying for cruise ship jobs as you may be better suited for certain companies depending on your language skills.

For example, Italian cruise line Costa vs German cruise line AIDA.

Clean Criminal Background

The cruise line will do a background check either before or after your offer of employment.

You’ll need to pass this check before you’re given a contract.

Valid Passport

You need a passport to work on ships as you’ll probably need to leave your country to join the ship and you’ll also be docked in other countries during your contract.

It’s best to have a valid passport before you start applying for cruise ship jobs as some applications may have a filter question that asks if you have one.

If you don’t have one, your application might not pass the initial screening.

💡 Tip: Getting a passport can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. If you don’t already have a passport, you can apply to cruise jobs that don’t inquire about your passport status, take note of the ones that do, and apply to those after you have a passport.

Medically Healthy

As I mentioned before, you need to pass a medical exam before you are officially given an onboard contract.

The requirements vary by ship, but most will include a general physical exam, blood work, vision test, and chest x-ray at the bare minimum.

Being in good health is more important while working at sea compared to working on land for a few reasons:

  • If you have a medical emergency, the closest hospital can be hours away
  • Living quarters and passageways onboard are crammed and narrow
  • Most jobs on cruise ships require you to be on your feet for most of the day
  • Crew members are required to assist in the event of emergencies
  • During emergencies, crew members need to be able to reach their muster stations within several minutes and without the use of elevators

Job-Specific Certifications

Some shipboard positions may require you to have specific certifications.

This is something to keep in mind when you’re deciding which jobs to apply for.

Examples include:

  • Lifeguard: First Aid/CPR certification
  • Youth Staff/Counselor: Degree in teaching or childcare
  • Food and Beverage: Food handler’s certification

Ship Certifications

Not all cruise lines expect you to have the required certifications to work at sea.

In fact, some cruise lines– like Royal Caribbean– train and certify you once you’re onboard which saves you time and money before your contract.

However, if you want an advantage over other prospective crew members and want your application to stand out, getting the following certifications ahead of time so that you can put it on your resume is a great idea:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training
  • First Aid/CPR

The Navigator of the Seas docked during sunset.

Step 3: Assess Your Skills & Find the Right Onboard Position

What cruise ship jobs can you do or have experience in?

Assess your skills and pin point which jobs are the best fit for you.

If you’re not sure what roles are available on cruise ships, think of these marine vehicles as floating resorts, hotels, or even a small village.

Any job that is needed to keep a remote town running will be found on a ship.

Jobs Available on Cruise Ships

So exactly what jobs are available on cruise ships?

Ship Jobs by Rank (Stripes)

Crew members are split into three categories/ranks: officer (highest), staff, and crew (lowest).

The jobs that come with these ranks reflect the amount of education and experience needed to fulfill these roles.

Here’s an example list of shipboard positions in each rank:

  • Officer: Captain, chief officer, safety officer
  • Staff: Entertainer, activity staff, youth staff, sports staff, shore excursion, future cruise sales, guest service officer
  • Crew: Stateroom attendant, cleaner, restaurant host, bartender

Ship Jobs by Department

Positions on ships are also categorized into three general departments: hotel/entertainment, marine/technical, and crew services.

The hotel department can be seen as the ship’s front-of-the-house, or more guest-facing services.

The marine and technical departments are mostly behind the scenes and their purpose is to safety navigate the ship to each destination.

Crew services are just a few members onboard who provide assistance to crew members such as HR and admin positions.

Step 4: Get to Know the Different Cruise Lines

Doing as much research about the cruise industry will help prepare you when you finally get a contract offer.

The more you know and the earlier you know it, the easier it will be to adjust once onboard and the fewer surprises you’ll run into.

One of the most important things I found after working on ships that most people don’t think about is that each cruise line has its own reputation and serves a different demographic– and these things can affect your experience as a crew member.

For example, Virgin and Royal Caribbean are often considered the best cruise lines to work for among crew members.

Regarding guest demographics, Carnival offers many budget-friendly cruises that can attract a rowdier crowd, especially the shorter the itinerary is.

Similarly, any affordable family-friendly cruise line (Disney, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian) means you’ll have to deal with upwards of a thousand children onboard during high season.

Working for a luxury cruise line like Silversea or an adults-only line such as Virgin might relieve you of kids running amok, but these cruises also mean you may get an older/elderly demographic that’s more entitled or demanding.

Regarding itineraries, smaller ships typically have better options because smaller ports can accommodate their size.

As a crew member on these ships, you’ll be able to visit more unique ports of call.

However, smaller cruise lines mean fewer crew positions.

Mega cruise ships on the other hand offer a better chance at employment, but their itineraries may be limited to only larger ports.

While you don’t usually have much of a choice when it comes to which cruise line that hires you, these factors are something to keep in mind.

Step 5: Tailor Your Resume

While you may be tempted to send the same resume you have saved on your computer to every cruise ship job posting– don’t.

As a former hiring manager, I can tell you that many– if not all– of these application programs automatically filter out resumes and CVs that don’t match basic requirements or keywords.

This means that if your resume/CV doesn’t include certain words or phrases, a human hiring manager will never see your application.

So make sure you do the following before you send off your resume:

  • Read the job description and take note of key phrases and requirements
  • Incorporate these words into your resume
  • Make sure you show that you meet the requirements in your resume

Some other general resume tips:

  • Name the file something simple and professional that makes sense (ex: John Smith Resume)
  • Don’t write in paragraphs; use bullet points
  • Keep the resume as short as possible (2 pages max)
  • Edit for grammar and spelling

Step 6: Apply (and Where to Apply)

There are generally four ways to apply for jobs on cruise ships: either directly on the company’s career page, through recruiters, via contracting companies for certain positions, or on cruise job boards.

Applying Directly to Cruise Lines

Here’s a list of the main cruise lines and their hiring pages for onboard positions:

  • Holland America
  • Regent Seven Seas
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Virgin Voyages

A woman in a floral yellow romper sits on a rock at Timothy Hill in St. Kitts overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Between the waters are small green hills separating the two.

Applying Through Recruiters & Hiring Partners

Recruitment companies and authorized hiring partners are probably the best way to get a job working on cruise ships.

I never head back about my application when I applied directly on the cruise line’s hiring pages, but ended up with my first ship contract due to a recruiter.

Recruitment companies have the time and resources to place you, and often there are recruiters hired specifically to work with your nationality.

Be Aware of Scam Recruiters

However, be aware that scam recruiters are, unfortunately, rampant.

If you are contacted by a recruitment agency, do your best to ensure that they are legitimate.

A real hiring manager or recruiter will NEVER ask you to pay to apply for a position.

You can also find a list of each cruise line’s official and authorized hiring partners at the bottom of their career’s page.

Applying Through Cruise Ship Job Boards

There are job boards similar to Indeed that are specifically for the cruise industry.

Here, companies and recruiters will post vacancies so that you can find openings in one central location.

This is how I eventually got in touch with a recruiter (I had no idea about her recruiting company; never head of it before I saw the job positing) and eventually ended up onboard with Royal Caribbean.

These are the top cruise ship job boards:

All Cruise Jobs

Cruise Ship Jobs

Step 7: Ace the Interview

Most interviews will be conducted virtually, either via video (Zoom or Skype) or phone.

Be prepared to show you’ve researched life as a crew member and your prospective position.

You’ll also be asked questions that demonstrate your personality and professionalism.

While challenging, the questions asked in the interview are pretty standard and shouldn’t be anything surprising.

Some additional interview tips:

  • Test your tech (audio, video, internet connection) before your interview
  • Triple-check your scheduled interview time and time zone
  • Be in a quiet room with an appropriate background if on video
  • Dress as if you’re going to an in-person interview if on video

Step 8: Check E-Mail Regularly for Offer of Employment

Don’t forget your spam folder!

After your interview, keep a close watch on your email so you don’t accidentally miss your offer of employment.

When you do receive one, be sure to respond as soon as possible.

If you wait too long, you could lose the offer.

Step 9: Onboarding

After you have your offer, your hiring manager will take you through the onboarding process.

This may include getting/submitting the following documents:

  • C1/D visa if you’re not Canadian or American and have a port in the U.S.
  • Valid passport
  • Medical exam
  • Background check

They should also send you a basic uniform list that will let you know what you need to come onboard with and what will be provided or purchased by you once you get on the ship.

If you need more insight about what to bring, you can also check out my post about what to pack for working on cruise ships .

The onboarding process can be quick for some and drag on for others– be prepared for anything!

If you haven’t heard back from your hiring manager after a couple of weeks of getting your contract offer, make sure to get in touch with them to guarantee you don’t fall through the cracks.

This happens on occasion, unfortunately, so be the proverbial (professional and friendly) squeaky wheel that gets the grease.

Step 10: Bon Voyage!

The last and final step to becoming a cruise ship crew member is receiving your official contract.

This will tell you your ship assignment, dates, and travel information to join the ship.

All that’s left is packing, saying your goodbyes, and getting ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

FAQ: How to Get a Job on a Cruise Ship

Is it hard to get a job on a cruise ship.

Cruise ship jobs are pretty competitive, so it may take some time before you get an offer of employment from a cruise line.

In order to give yourself the best chance possible at getting your application seen, be sure to follow all the steps and tips listed in this article.

What qualifications do you need to work on cruise ships?

Some basic qualifications required to work on cruise ships include:

  • Typically between ages 18-50
  • Language fluency
  • Pass a medical exam
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Job specific qualifications

How much do cruise ship jobs pay?

Cruise ship job salaries depend on your position.

For those of us in highly developed countries such as the United States, UK, and Australia, cruise ship jobs pay significantly less than minimum wage in our home cities.

For example, the minimum wage in my home city of San Francisco, California in 2019 was $15.59 an hour.

When I worked for Royal Caribbean in 2019 as a Youth Staff/Counselor, I was paid $2150 per month (before taxes).

With no days off, this broke down to approximately $77 per day.

If I worked an atypical 14-hour day during high season, this meant I earned $5.50/hour.

If I worked a shorter 8-hour day, this meant I earned $9.60/hour.

My position on ships was mid-tier (staff), so my pay wasn’t the lowest, but it was also far from the highest (Captain, officer, cruise director, etc.)

Generally speaking, a salary earned on cruise ships will go further in developing and less developed countries.

Keep in mind though that while onboard, crew members rarely have any bills as the following are covered during their contract:

  • Accommodation
  • Meals on ship

Also, for most crew members, the mandatory vacation time between contracts (6-8 weeks) is unpaid.

Can I work on a ship with no experience?

Yes, it is possible to work on ships with no experience.

But just keep in mind that these positions are the most competitive because of the low barrier to entry.

These positions are also typically the lowest paid jobs on board yet the most physically demanding.

Some of these ship jobs include:

  • Laundry assistant

“CLIA membership has taken my travel business to another level! It has given me the confidence to offer my clients the best in cruises, from family-oriented to luxury. CLIA Professional Development has provided me with in-depth knowledge of cruise lines, ports of call, and so much more. Most importantly, CLIA has taken my commissions to another level. After all, it is true, “the more you learn, the more you earn.” Speaking as an ACC, nearly complete with the Master Cruise Counsellor (MCC) program, it truly is the best investment that I could have ever made in my business. Onward and upward!” — Ferne C. Sapp, ACC

I am so grateful for CLIA, and everything you all do to make sure agents are equipped with the knowledge and tools to provide the best service in the cruise industry. I have enjoyed all of the classes I have taken so far, and I look forward to working toward my MCC. It’s not just important to me to advise clients, but I also want to be knowledgeable in all aspects of the cruise business. Even after three college degrees, the training with CLIA has been my best education yet! Thank you all for being great trainers, leaders, and advisors. — Tonia Sanders, ACC

Earning my CLIA Master Cruise Counselor certification nearly 20 years ago provided me with the core knowledge to get my career off the ground. I am grateful for CLIA’s continually evolving training offerings both digitally and in person that enhance travel advisors ability to understand the complexity of the cruise market. — Daniel Genung

“CLIA training has given me the competence and confidence to sell cruises. When I started as a travel advisor 11 years ago, I had sales experience from my previous job, but I had no cruise sales or personal cruising experience. The first place I started was enrolling in Cruising 101, and eventually on to more advanced CLIA online courses. I eventually earned my ACC and then my MCC. I tell my clients that I have a PhD in cruising and that I earned that level of expertise from CLIA training. CLIA Professional Development has helped me to become an expert in cruising!” — Barbara Ballard, MCC

I've worked on cruise ships for years. I always see passengers make these 13 mistakes.

  • I've worked on cruise ships for over six years, so I've seen many passengers make mistakes.
  • Missing the ship at port or booking excursions with outside operators could be costly and risky.
  • If you don't set your phone to airplane mode, you may rack up overseas roaming charges.

Insider Today

After over six years working on ships for a major cruise line , I've witnessed tons of travel blunders that prevent guests from having the best possible experience.

Here are 13 common mistakes I see travelers make:

Not reading the fine print can lead to conduct issues later

Passengers usually come on the ship excited for a good time, and for many, this involves a drinks package . And with lots of drinks can come rowdiness.

I've come across a few troublemakers who had no idea that smashing Champagne glasses in the hot tub could get you booted off the ship.

Every passenger consents to a hefty conduct policy when they book the cruise, so make sure to read through it to know what's prohibited on board.

Make sure to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges

Cellular rates at sea can sneak up on you, and you can easily rack up a $500 roaming bill.

Even if you're not actively on your phone, most are still using data, so make sure to put yours on airplane mode to avoid roaming charges.

Really, just turn your phone off unless you're using it to take photos or access the ship's WiFi.

Many passengers don't take advantage of the different dining options on board

I often see passengers eat all three meals at the buffet every day. I know some people just really love the self-serve option, but it surprises me how many guests have no idea what's included with their trip.

Many times, the biggest shock to most first-time cruisers is that the dining room is included on most ships. Yes, this means a sit-down meal where you can order seven appetizers, five entrées, and 12 extra cookies for a midnight snack.

There are also so many spots with free food around most ships, like a pizza station, 24-hour ice-cream machine, and small cafés. Just be aware that specialty dining, like the steak house , might cost extra.

Leaving your room key behind is more of a hassle than you'd expect

It is not just a room key — it's your onboard credit card, ticket on and off the ship, and identification for the week.

Everything is connected to that card, so make sure to set up your information online ahead of time so you can start swiping the moment you get on board.

Security will scan it when you pass through the gangway to know who is on or off the ship, so it's especially important to have it on port days.

If you lose it, report it to the service desk immediately to ensure that no one else spends your money.

Many guests don't know they can bring their own wine on the ship

While many people think no outside alcohol is permitted on the ship, many major cruise lines allow passengers over the age of 21 to bring a bottle or two of wine on boarding day, so you can stop smuggling drinks in empty mouthwash bottles.

Some terminals will even sell wine to boarding travelers. If you buy alcohol in a port, you'll usually have to check it upon reentering the ship, and it'll be delivered to your room on the last night.

Missing the all-aboard time on port days is an expensive mistake

In my years of working cruises, I have seen more than a handful of guests miss the ship.

Although this is a huge fear for most passengers, it usually happens to avid cruisers — people who have been to the port many times before sometimes assume the all-aboard time is always the same.

But this time varies by cruise, and it's stated on multiple signs at the exit gangway, in the daily planner, and in the captain's announcement.

Also, always triple-check whether the all-aboard time is based on the ship's clock or the local time.

If you miss the ship, you'll often have to get yourself to the next port, which can be very pricey.

Passengers miss out on discounts by not booking their next cruise while still on the ship

Booking a future vacation while on a ship can get you bigger discounts on cruises , access to new itineraries not open to the general public yet, and a lot of onboard credit.

These booking appointments are usually filled up by the last few days of the cruise, so head there at the beginning of your stay for more deals and no wait.

Booking a tour with an outside operator can be risky

Although it might be a lot cheaper to book your tours independently, it's also a lot riskier.

Excursions booked through the ship are with verified operators. Most cruise lines will wait for the ship's tour to return before leaving the port, even if it's hours late.

But this is not the case if you book on your own, and running through the port to find the ship sailing away is probably not the excursion you're looking for.

Immediately removing the automatic gratuity affects many staff members

On most cruise ships, there is a preset daily gratuity charged per passenger unless it's removed at the guest-services desk.

I see so many people come on board and immediately remove the charge, but this fee is usually split between your housekeeping, dining, and cleaning staff. It is essential to their jobs and affects their livelihoods.

I'd recommend waiting until the end of the cruise to make sure you're happy with the service instead of removing it on day one. You can also increase or decrease the amount instead of cutting it.

Packing prohibited items can lead to a headache

As confident as you are that you can sneak on your portable iron, I seriously advise against packing anything that's not allowed on board.

Security scans your bags on embarkation day, and if a prohibited item — like an iron, a bottle of vodka, or a candle — is found, they will hold your bag.

Your luggage won't be delivered to your door, and you may have to wait several hours until security contacts you, brings you to the holding area to search the bag, and confiscates the item until the end of the cruise.

Prepare your necessary travel documents to avoid trouble at ports

Cruise ships travel all over the world, so check if you need specific visas or documents based on your nationality.

You are responsible for knowing and bringing your own paperwork. If you don't have the right documents, you might not be able to get off at a port or, even worse, be allowed back on the ship.

I saw this happen when traveling to India with many American guests, a handful of whom didn't realize they needed a visa.

Dressing down on formal night can limit your dining options

Even though walking through the promenade in shorts is your choice, many guests aren't aware that there's usually a formal evening on most cruises.

Most passengers don evening gowns and suits on formal nights, and I've met cruisers who wished they would've packed at least one nice item — besides their Margaritaville shirt, of course.

Passengers not formally dressed on this evening usually aren't allowed to eat in the ship's main dining rooms, though the buffet is open to everyone.

It's worth learning the difference between port and starboard

Different announcements will direct passengers to either the port side or starboard side of the ship, so it's best to brush up on the jargon before your vacation.

Port is the left side of the boat and starboard is the right, always configured facing the front of the ship.

Just remember that "port" and "left" are both four letters. You'll thank me later.

Can you Retire on a Cruise?

C an you retire on a cruise? The thought might have crossed your mind. It makes sense because after all, isn’t living on a cruise similar to living in a senior home? Below we will compare what it’s like to retire on a cruise versus a senior home.

I’ve Been on over 25 Cruises, Here are 17 Things I’ll Never Do on a Cruise

Pros of Retiring on a Cruise

You get to travel.

One of the best things about retiring on a cruise is that you get to travel. You get to see the world and go from port to port which is better than staying put at home or in a retirement home.

Retiring on a cruise ship has its perks, one of which is the convenience of having all your meals included. You don’t have to worry about grocery shopping or meal planning like you would at a retirement home.

At some retirement homes, food might not even be included or only breakfast and dinner are, leaving you to prepare your lunch. A cruise ship is definitely the way to go for a hassle-free experience.

The quality of food also differs between a retirement home and a cruise ship. On a cruise, you’re spoiled for choice with a diverse range of cuisines such as Asian, Indian and Italian. Whether you’re feeling like a sit-down meal at the Main Dining Room or a quick bite at the buffet or poolside grill, there’s bound to be something to satisfy your craving.

Retirement homes, on the other hand, typically serve cafeteria-level food that cannot compare to the fancier options on a cruise ship. You won’t find shrimp cocktails or Baked Alaska on the menu at a retirement home!

There’s no denying that a cruise ship is a hub of entertainment. There’s an endless list of activities to do, from Bingo, Art Auctions, Learn to Dance, Trivia, to Karaoke.

While if you compare that with the activities at a senior home, they are not on the same level as those on a cruise ship. You might only come across a few activities a day, such as Bingo, arts and crafts, and free transportation to the local Walmart.

The difference between the caliber of activities on a cruise ship versus a senior home is like night and day.

10 Food I’ll Never Eat at a Cruise Buffet

Level of Service

On a cruise ship, you can expect a higher level of service compared to a retirement home. For one thing, you get daily housekeeping service, which may not always be the case in a retirement home.

Additionally, mealtimes on a cruise ship are a fancier affair. You get to enjoy a sit-down meal that includes all the works – a white tablecloth, a dedicated server with an assistant, a sommelier, and the maitre’d. In contrast, meals in a retirement home are not as fancy.

One nice thing about cruising is that you get to watch Broadway shows or at least Broadway-quality musicals. It’s amazing the type of shows and the caliber of performances on the ship.

For example, some Royal Caribbean cruise ships even have Aqua Theaters where you will watch Cirque de Soleil-type shows with high divers, synchronized swimmers and acrobats!

And if you ever feel like breaking the monotony of watching the same shows every week, you can always hit up the lobby or piano bar for some live music.

While in your retirement home, you have to make do with watching TV. If you’re lucky, your retirement home may organize an occasional field trip to watch a show at a local theater.

Meet New People

One good thing about cruising is that you get to meet new people every week! If you’re going on back-to-back cruises, a new set of cruise passengers will join you every week. It makes cruising interesting while if you’re in a retirement home, you’re seeing the same people every day, again and again.

10 Cheapest and Safest Places to Retire in Florida

Cons of Retiring on a Cruise Ship

You’ll be far from family.

The one main disadvantage of retiring on a cruise ship is that you won’t get to see family and your grandkids very often. They will either have to come to join you on your cruise ship or you have to get off the ship and go visit them.

While if you’re living in a retirement home, it’s easier for your family and you will get to spend more time with your grandkids.

Health Care

A major hesitation that I have for retiring on a cruise ship is the lack of medical facilities on board. If there is a medical emergency, the ship may not have the personnel or equipment necessary to handle it.

Even for routine checkups, you will need to leave the ship to see your doctor for a checkup. This means you won’t have access to prescription medication on the ship either.

If you have a serious medical issue, the cruise ship may ask you to disembark, leaving you stranded without a place to stay. It can be quite unsettling to be uprooted like that.

10 Ridiculous Time Wasters to Avoid on a Cruise

Health Insurance

When you retire on a cruise, you will have to pay for international health insurance. This is because Medicare does not cover you when you’re outside the country.

You also need to make sure that your insurance policy includes emergency evacuation coverage since this can be exorbitantly expensive. It can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 to be transported to a US facility in an emergency situation!

Most cruise ships don’t allow pets onboard. If you have a cat or dog, you can’t bring it with you on the ship. You will have to make do living without your furry friend.

Small Cabin

Living on a cruise ship may seem appealing at first, but as time goes by, the small cabins with limited storage space might start to feel cramped. Even if you choose a balcony room or a suite, you’ll eventually find yourself wishing for more space.

You might start yearning for a larger bathroom with a tub, a more spacious balcony, and additional storage space, not to mention a more sizable cabin overall. The novelty of retiring on a cruise ship is bound to wear off, leaving you longing for the comforts of a larger living space.

Seasickness

Retiring on a cruise ship may sound like a dream come true, but it does come with its own set of challenges. One of the downsides is the possibility of seasickness.

Even if you’re not usually affected by it, choppy waters could trigger nausea. Even if you select a cruise itinerary that avoids rough seas, you never know when a storm could unexpectedly hit.

Not Connected

One of the drawbacks of living on a cruise ship is the limited connectivity. You might not always have reliable wifi on board, and phone calls can cost a lot. You also have fewer options for entertainment, such as TV shows and channels. Even streaming Netflix can be tricky, because of the slow speed or the data limit. It’s not easy to stay in touch with the world when you’re cruising.

The 12 Best Cities to Retire in America

How Much Does it Cost to Retire on a Cruise?

Let’s compare how much it costs to go on a cruise versus living in a senior home. For example, if you go on Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas and do back-to-back cruises from the Mediterranean to Transatlantic to the Caribbean, you are looking at approximately $195 per person per day for an inside stateroom with a view of the promenade. That comes out to just under $6000 a month. This will be less if you choose an older ship.

Compare that to living in a senior home where the median cost of senior independent living is approximately $3000. But it can be a lot more expensive than that. I know where I am in Connecticut, for example, I’m looking at closer to $7000 a month!

It really depends on where you live and the type of cruise you find. Don’t forget to add extra health insurance to your total plus other expenses like shore excursion, airfare and hotel. Living on a cruise is going to come out more expensive than living in a senior home.

Is retiring on a cruise doable? Yes, for sure it’s doable. I think it could be a lot of fun. But it’s definitely not a long term retirement solution due to the lack of medical staff and facilities onboard the ship.

I do suggest giving it a try by doing a few back to back cruises for a month. Be on the lookout for Cruise Deals – you never know what you find.

River Cruise Moscow To St. Petersburg

By rajawali July 30, 2007 in Traveling with Celiac Disease

Recommended Posts

Hello dear Celiac suferrers,

My wife and I (I am a new celiac) plan to do a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg in Sept/Oct. I am very concerned about my situation and would like to learn from you who have been on a trip similar to this. This trip is organized by Viking River Cruises.

From reading the comments in this forum, I understand that I need to talk to the cruise line, to the people managing food on board the cruise ship, to the tour guide, etc. I was also thinking about bringing my own food (very cumbersome), rice, rice cooker, etc.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

My friend and her husband did that cruise in the opposite direction (St Pete to Moscow). They had a great time. I don't envy you trying to do it with celiac disease. She said most of the food was gluten based.... I hope that someone in the know listens to your concerns. I don't mean to sound negative but I would sure think about bringing along as much food as my suitcase will carry. Not only are you dealing with people who might not have knowledge about celiac disease but there is a huge language barrier unless you are fluent in Russian.... BUT like they say, where there is a will there is a way. I would count on myself to make sure I have the kinds of food I can eat. Hopefully, there will be markets along the way where you can get fresh fruits and veggies.

Just an add on to the above comment. I saw my friend today and she was showing me pics of the trip. It looked wonderful. They did travel on the Viking Cruise. She suggested that you get as much in writing (Russian) about your food restrictions as there were few people (I think she said NONE) on the boat who spoke English well enough to understand your situation. One of the stops on the trip was to a home of a Russian woman. She cooked a traditional meal. My friend showed me the pic of the table..... loaves and loaves of bread. She said that homemade bread (even on the boat) was a staple at every meal. I know that this is probably a downer but you will probably just have to figure out a way to be creative in your eating. My friend said that the meals on board were traditional Russian foods.... She said that there didn't seem to be any kind of meal substitutions offered to the guests on the boat. She suggested that you will probably want to get this taken care of before the trip. Again I know I sound like a "nay sayer" but best you prepare ahead for the trip rather than be taken by surprise. I would be anxious to find out how everything turned out. Like I said before the pics looked wonderful!!!!!

Dear Sparkles.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I will post my experiences after I get back from our trip in September.

Many readers suggested bringing such things as gluten free bars that you can get from Whole Foods, Trail Mixes, etc. Unfortunately, I found out that I am also sensitive to dried fruits. I tried dried appricots, dates (beautiful, large and delicious ones from California) and got into big D.

Recently I found out that I seem to develop lactose intolerance. Loved cheese and yogurt, but, can't have them anymore. I was diagnosed with Celiac in Nov 2005. Had no problem with lactose until recently.

I also found that I cannot tolerate certain nuts, such as smoked almonds. I understand many bars use nuts and dried fruits. I plan to try some of them shortly.

Is this unusual, or are there readers with the same problem ? This makes it difficult when flying long distance.

  • 8 months later...

Dear fellow Celiac sufferers,

My wife and I did the Moscow - St. Petersburg river cruise with Viking River Cruises. We had a fabulous experience, not one accident. The cruise ship crew was fantastic looking after my diet.

Here is what I did:

1. I went into MENUDATA.com and get a free translation in Russian of the stuff I cannot have.

2. As soon as we got on board, I went to see the dining room's maitre d' and gave him a copy of the printed the translation.

3. He identified me as #5 (lactose intolerant) and #6 (gluten free) from his mater list. Told me to tell the wait staff of my numbers each time I came for a meal, and promised to make a special meal.

4. True to his word, I never had an accident. Even the box lunches that they prepared were gluten free. After a couple of days, they all knew me.

Naturally I tipped them generously for their detailed attention.

We brought a lot of Lara Bars, Jerky (only Oberto as it is MSG free), etc. Didn't touch them too much.

We flew Lufthanza and requested a special diet. They faithfully provided me with the fruit platter meals that I requested.

That was my pleasant experience, and the river cruise ? It was fantastic.

I hope this experience is helpful to those who wants to go to Russia.

Ursa Major

That sounds excellent, I am glad you had a good time without getting sick! And it is also so much more enjoyable if you get good food, too.

  • 5 years later...

So glad to read a positive report about a river boat cruise in Russia.  I do note that these posts are rather old.  Does anyone have updated information on the availability of gluten-free in Russia - specifically Moscow and St. Petersburg?  I've had one tour company tell me that gluten-free food may not be available, even in the big cities.  I'd appreciate any updated info.  BTW, I posted on Fodor's Russia forum over a month ago and have had no responses.  Sigh.....Thanks much.

cyclinglady

I hope others respond. I too will be in St. Petersburg for two days as part of a port stop on a cruise ship this summer. I am hoping the ship might provide some food for me or I will have to dine on food I am bring from home. I have not even started to research yet. Your post might get me going!

You will be taken on a city tour and see Moscow's most interesting sights and learn about this amazing city's past and present. You will also have a chance to do some light shopping and there will be time to relax aboard the ship in the evenings. One of the highlights of your time in Moscow is a visit to  Red Square  and the  Kremlin . You will also visit one of the Kremlin's famous cathedrals. The Kremlin as we know it today was rebuilt as a stone structure during the beginning of the 14th century but the actual site has been inhabited and used as a fortified city wall for centuries before this period. The Kremlin is truly a fascinating structure - at the same time it is an ancient tower, the city's former military fortification, a palace and the workplace of the Russian President. The Kremlin is the center of Russia's political life and State power and has been home to Tsars, General Secretaries of the Soviet Union and Russian Presidents.

Moscow  is Russia's political and financial capital as well as a major world class cultural center. The city includes many must see attractions from the Kremlin and Red Square to the Assumption Cathedral. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is unique in that it blends the ancient with the modern. See medieval structures among modern office buildings, walk down crooked old city streets opening up to wide, busy boulevards. It is a fantastic city and truly a site that shouldn't be missed.

Uglich : You will be taken on a walking city tour with visit to the  Kremlin , the  Church of St. Demitrius on the Blood  and the  Transfiguration cathedral .

Uglich  was founded in 1148 as a small princedom bordering on Muscovy and is one of the most beloved towns in Old Russia. The view of the town as you approach it from the Volga River is breathtaking with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John's Church rising on the horizon. The history of the town is fascinating; At the end of the 16th century, Maria Nagaya, seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in honorary exile at the Kremlin in Uglich. It was here in her garden that the 10 year old Prince Dmitry of the Rurik Dynasty, heir to the Russian throne was murdered by Boris Godunov who wanted to seize power for himself. On the spot of his death, the Church of St. Demitrius of the Blood was built and still stands today. The death of Prince Dmitri brought on the start of the Time of Troubles, a dynastic and political crises and one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history which ended 15 years later after the election of a new Tsar, Mikhail Romanov (the first Tsar of the Romanov Dynasty). Inside the Kremlin the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry also stands. During your time in Uglich you will learn more about the town's past and walk along the paths of Russian history.

Arrival in the ancient village of  Goritsy . Tour of the  St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery  and the  Museum of Icons .

Goritsy  is a tiny settlement 7 kilometers from the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery. The remains of the Nunnery of the Resurrection that sits on the banks of the Sheksna River can be visited and is within a quarter of a mile of where the ship stops. Goritsy is definitely a site to see for anyone with an interest in Russian history. St. Cyril on the White Lake was founded in 1397 by Kirill Belosersky on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. The monastery had wide trade in the 15th to 17th centuries and was used as a fortress to protect Russia's nobility during the Times of Troubles.

After the tour you will return to your ship and set sail in the direction of St. Petersburg along the Volga Baltic Canal. The Volga Baltic Canal is a series of canals and rivers that connect the Volga river to the Baltic Sea.

You'll cruise along Europe's second largest lake,  Lake Onega  and arrive on the island of  Kizhi . Here you will visit a fascinating open-air museum containing numerous examples of elaborate Russian, wooden architecture.

Kizhi Island : Via the Volga Baltic Canal, our cruise takes us to the tiny island of Kizhi, located at the northern end of Lake Onega. The island is renowned for its open-air  Museum of Architecture , which is assembled from over 80 monuments of wooden architecture from various areas of the country and restored to form a glimpse of the past. The most impressive site on the island is the  Church of the Transfiguration or Preobrazhenskaya  (the church of twenty-two wooden domes). This masterpiece of architecture, featuring five tiers of 22 domes, was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail, only an axe and pine trees. The church magically changes color as the day grows old, it is certainly one of the most interesting things you will see during your time in Russia.

We will have a fantastic barbeque picnic on the banks of the river featuring one of Russia's favorite specialties - shashlik (meat shish kebab prepared on an outdoor fire). You will love it!

Mandrogui  is really more of a living museum than a live-in village. One of the features here is the Vodka Museum, which contains thousands of different brands and types of Russia's favorite pastime.

One of the highlights of your entire cruise will be a visit to the  Hermitage , Russia's premier museum containing one of the largest art collections in the world. The museum consists of five historical buildings including the Winter Palace - the residence of the Russian Tsars. The museum contains over 3 million pieces of art with dates ranging from high antiquity to the present day. Among the Hermitage's treasures are artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens and many others.
