Mont-Saint-Michel, an exceptional tourist site

The Mont-Saint-Michel can be discovered during a day trip from Paris. It is one of those timeless sites cut off from time that offer you their most beautiful face with each visit. It is a moving dive into time, the confrontation between men and nature that gives an impression of the end of the world.

A fortified rock between Brittany and Normandy

Only 360 kilometers from Paris, the second most visited tourist site in France welcomes more than 3 million tourists each year, with an influx of up to 20,000 visitors per day during the summer season. Sometimes an island, sometimes a rock erected in the middle of a sea of sand, it is the central character of a picture that is recomposed from hour to hour.

Going to the Mont-Saint-Michel with Paris City Vision is the assurance of a quality guided tour even on a busy day. You will not miss any of the place's curiosities, you will learn more about the history of the abbey, its cloister, and contemplate the high tides that occur in the bay every year. Your coach will take you to the parking lot where you can take a shuttle that spans the sands along a surprising road or go on foot to enjoy a more progressive discovery. Parking lots, shuttles, footbridge, these works have saved this natural wonder from silting up and allow you to continue to enjoy this magical place

The abbey, between tourist attraction and spiritual life

As far as the memory of men goes, spirituality has always been very strong in these wild and isolated lands. Its geographical situation, between sky, sea and earth, already fascinated our distant ancestors: it would have hosted, a very long time ago, druidic cult practices and a pagan stone would have been pulled out by Aubert on the Mont Tombe.

But the notoriety of the place, well before the arrival of tourists and organized trips, is based on its very lively spiritual life. As early as the Middle Ages, the old Mont-Tombe welcomed a first oratory dedicated to the archangel who gave his name to the place and took the name of Mont-Saint-Michel-au-péril-de-la-Mer. The prestige of this first religious monument is reinforced by the legend that surrounds its construction: the Christian implantation on this exceptional site would have been wanted by the archangel in person, appearing in a dream to the bishop Saint-Aubert and marking him on the forehead to testify to the mystical character of his dreams.

If, among the innumerable visitors who go on excursions and visit Mont-Saint-Michel, they go there for religious reasons, the majesty of the abbey, based on successive constructions spread over several centuries, contributes very strongly to the popularity of the site. The statue of Saint-Michel slaying the dragon, gilded with fine gold and more than 4.6 meters high with its wings, still rises more than 156 meters above the sea.

More than just a rocky island

Its geographical location, which places it on the border between the duchies of Normandy and Brittany, has made this rocky islet a strategic issue of primary importance. Its ramparts were built in the 13th century, strengthened and reworked several times, protecting it from attacks. Besieged in 1424 during the Hundred Years' War, it resisted attacks for ten years, the battle led by Montois Louis d'Estouteville in 1434 putting the Mount definitively safe from the English assaults who gave up trying to take this stronghold by force.

From these troubled times, you will appreciate the fortified enclosure and will probably take a picture of it during your visit. The architecture as a whole participates fully in the medieval identity of the place.

Mont st michel day trip from paris.

Mont Saint Michel in Normandy is the Wonder of the Western World , and one of the most spectacular sites in France.

The area is known for its high tides, which make the abbey inaccessible for some hours and give Mont Saint Michel a picturesque setting.

The amazing Mont Saint-Michel Benedictine Abbey is set on a rocky island at the mouth of the Couesnon River, where the regions of Normandy and Brittany meet. Since medieval times, Mont Saint-Michel is a renowned center of pilgrimage and an important learning center thanks to its rich library.

Can I visit Mont Saint Michel from Paris in a day?

Although Mont St Michel is best explored on a weekend getaway from Paris or, even better, as part of a Normandy road trip , Mont Saint-Michel tours from Paris are possible and very popular. A Paris to Mont St Michel day trip usually takes 14 hours in total, along with traveling to and from Paris. This gives you enough time to explore Mont St Michel and take beautiful shots.

Mont Saint Michel Opening Hours

From 1 May to 31 August – open daily from 9 am to 7 pm.

From 1 September to 30 April – open daily from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.

1 January, 1 May, and 25 December – Closed.

Best Time to Visit Mont St Michel

The best time to visit Mont St Michel to avoid the biggest crowds is in November, early December, late January, February, and March. If possible, visit the Abbey first thing in the morning or late afternoon (after 3 pm).

The downside of visiting Mount St Michel during the low season is the light, which is not ideal for taking pictures. We visited Mont St Michel from Paris in February, and I missed the blue sky typical of summers in France! You also need to check the weather forecast before picking a date.

TIP: Plan your Mont Saint-Michel from Paris day trip with the Tides in Mind . If possible, plan your Paris to Mont Saint-Michel day trip during the highest tides for the most spectacular view of Mont Saint Michel. During high tides, the island seems to float above the blue water and creates a perfect reflection. Click here to view the tides calendar around Mont Saint Michel.

Best Ways to Visit Mont Saint-Michel from Paris

Paris to Mont St Michel by Car

Time needed: 4-5 hours (one way)

Of course, this is the best option to visit Mont St Michel on a day trip from Paris, but if you don’t have a car, we don’t recommend renting one only for visiting Mont St Michel.

For those arriving by car, there is a dedicated car park on the mainland, 2.5 km away from the island, to preserve the maritime beauty of the place. Once you have parked the car, you must walk to the Place des Navettes and board the free shuttle to the island. Place des Navettes is 800 m from the car park, and the shuttles stop 450m away from the island itself, so there is a fair bit of walking involved too. The shuttles operate every day from 7:30 am to midnight.

Paris to Mont Saint Michel by Train

Time needed: 3,5 – 4 hours one way (depending on the train)

Take a TGV from Paris’ Gare Montparnasse to Rennes , from where Keolis buses travel to Mont St. Michel up to four times a day (follow the signs “Exit North”, and “Bus Station”).

You can also change trains at Rennes and take a local train from Rennes to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel train station.

Once you arrive at the edge of the mainland, you can either take a shuttle or walk across the 900 meters-long causeway ( Pont Passerelle ) that connects the mainland to the island. The shuttle will cost you €2 shuttle one way.

Mont Saint Michel Tours from Paris

Usually, a Paris to Mont St Michel tour is the most comfortable way to get to Mont Saint-Michel. Sit on the van and enjoy the landscape without worrying about directions, transfers, or train connections.

Nowadays, Mont Saint Michel tours are not ‘follow the umbrella’ tours. You will be exploring the abbey and the fortress at your own pace with the help of an audio guide, and you can decide where and when to have lunch.

This small-group Mont St Michel tour from Paris by minibus or van comes with skip-the-line tickets and a special stop to taste some of the famous Cider Pommeau, and Calvados drinks so typical of Normandy.

And why not extend the fun? Book this 2-day guided tour from Paris and visit two of the most famous areas in France, Mont Saint-Michel and the Loire Valley Castles.

History of Mont Saint Michel

day trip paris mont saint michel

In the past, the island was called  Mont Tombe . Most probably, this name referred to a stone or a megalithic monument on the island for a pagan cult.

In the 8th century, the bishop of Avranches constructed an oratory in honor of the archangel St. Michael after having a vision.

In the 10th century, the Benedictine monks settled on the island at the request of the Duke of Normandy, Richard I, and they started to build an abbey.

Very quickly, the abbey became a major place of pilgrimage for the Christian West but also a center of medieval culture where a large number of manuscripts were produced, preserved, and studied.

Mont Saint Michel’s strategic fortifications (13th – 16th centuries) helped the island to survive The Hundred Years’ War, the French War of Religion, the French Revolution , and the hard times under Napoleon I.

Mont Saint Michel and its bay are listed as Unesco World Heritage since 1971.

Things to Do on a Day Trip to Mont St Michel from Paris

1. visit the abbey.

The  Mont Saint-Michel Abbey  is a fine example of French Gothic flair architecture with a Romanesque touch. It is a construction built over the centuries on a very particular topography, so it isn’t easy to compare it with other abbeys or cathedrals in France.

day trip paris mont saint michel

Take the time to admire the beautiful structure, with its pointed arches and narrow windows, sculptures, and other details that decorate the building.

day trip paris mont saint michel

TIP: Visit the abbey at your own pace with this  guided audio tour on your phone . And if you want to skip the longest lines,  buy your Mont Saint-Michel tickets online .

2. Wander around the Streets of Mont Saint Michel

day trip paris mont saint michel

The island is the permanent home to around 50 people (including the monks in the abbey). Medieval houses and narrow cobble-stoned streets wind up their way up the rocky island, and there’s a magical atmosphere (when there are no crowds).

The Grand Degré is the name of the iconic set of stairs that lead up to the abbey from the Grande Rue. Take your time to climb up the stairs to the abbey, and admire the abbey’s grand architecture perched on the top of the hill, as well as the beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding bay and countryside.

Book this insightful private walking tour  with an enthusiastic guide and explore the area on a custom journey. Learn about its changes over the centuries and the most fascinating histories – the better and less known – of Mont Saint Michel.

TIP: we always recommend spending one night on-site, within the island walls. When the day crowds are gone, the atmosphere at Mont Saint-Michel is magical. Check out the best hotels in Mont Saint-Michel for a memorable trip.

3. Taste Mont Saint Michel’s Famous Dishes

Your day trip from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel wouldn’t be complete without tasting some local specialties. And there’s no need to worry about food in Mont Saint Michel, there are places to eat within the walls for everybody!

Mère Poulard’s fluffy omelet is the most famous dish to eat at Mont Saint Michel, and it is supposed to be the best omelet in the world! La Mère Poulard has been around since 1888, located close to the King’s Gate and in front of the Tourism Office. Book your table well in advance and be ready to pay around 30 € for a traditional omelet (but hey, it’s an experience!)

day trip paris mont saint michel

Another must dish in Mont Saint Michel is the Lamb (AOP) Prés salés du Mont-Saint-Michel . These are the lambs that you see eating the salty grass around the island. The lams are carefully selected to resist harsh climatic conditions, the risk of getting bogged down, prolonged walking, and halophilic vegetation. The meat is very tender and has an exquisite, slightly salty taste.

To taste the authentic, best lamb of the pré salé (AOP), book a table at  Le Pré Salé  (Route du Mont Saint-Michel | Bp 8, 50170 Mont-Saint-Michel).

4. Explore the Bay with a Local Guide

day trip paris mont saint michel

For your day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel, consider exploring the bay with a local guide.

Low tides in Mont Saint Michel are also interesting. It will let you explore the island’s surroundings and admire the medieval fortress and the abbey from another point of view. Close to Mont Saint Michel is another granite islet, Tombelaine, which also has a rich history directly linked to that of Mont Saint Michel. The bay is home to a wide variety of birds and seals.

During the summer, you can walk around the bay barefoot, but in winter (November to February), the tours are with boots.

For this tour, make sure to take a  local guide  along to be safe in the sand and the marshes. Tides in this area rise very quickly and not at a constant speed, so you cannot really know…

Please, don’t save money on this and take this tour with a local guide . Get this tip from somebody who was rescued in Mont Saint Michel!

5. Take a Night Stroll (Sound & Light Show, Seasonal)

If you decided to visit Mont Saint-Michel from Paris by car, don’t miss this Abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel Night Stroll , a magical experience only available this July and August 2023.

Plug into the audio guide for a magical and poetic perspective of Mont-Saint-Michel at the all-new Millennium, Elevation.

Walk around the atmospheric abbey by night; it’s a totally different feeling without the crowds! The visual and audio tours will take you beyond the stone to discover the abbey’s many symbols and the meaning behind them.

The gates open at 19:30, and the last entry is at 23:00. You can take this audio tour whenever you want during this time period – Click here to buy your tickets to this Mont Saint-Michel Sound & Light Show

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

Mont Saint Michel Day Trip From Paris

By: Author Christine Rogador

Escape the bustling city and visit a place that’s a fortified village, an imposing abbey, and an isolated island rolled into one. Taking a Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel day trip from Paris makes for a unique (and somewhat magical!) experience.

Mont Saint Michel, a tidal rock island capped with a tall medieval abbey, is located in the expansive harbor where Brittany and Normandy meet and is surrounded by some of the fastest tides in the world.

It was an inspiration for the visual style of The Lord of the Rings and is one of France’s Top Ten Icons.

The enthralling Mont-Saint-Michel, or Saint Michael’s Mount, is an absolute must-visit when you get to France. Plus, there is more than enough to do and see at this enormous abbey and monastery to fill a whole day.

The islet was originally called Mont Tombe and was founded by an Irish hermit.

The bishop of Avranches, according to legend,  got a visit from the Archangel Michael in 708 and was instructed to construct a church on the island. Its impressive fortifications kept it from being conquered even by the powerful English.

William Longsword, the second king of Normandy , formally annexed the mount into Norman territory in 933.

By the time the French Revolution began, there were so few monks living at the abbey that it was turned into a jail.

The prison was shut down in 1863, and by 1874 it had been designated a historic monument thanks to the efforts of people like Victor Hugo.

For centuries Mont-Saint-Michel was supported by French Royalty , survived the English Armies, and drew in pilgrims in search of religious knowledge.

Now, Mont Saint Michel is an icon of France and one of its most breathtaking destinations.

To help you visit this enchanting islet with less to zero hassle, we have put together a guide to visiting Mont Saint Michel day trip from Paris so that you can get the most out of your trip.

From the different ways to get there to some practical tips, this guide has got you covered.

You can either take a shuttle from the mainland or walk across the 900-meter-long Pont Passerelle causeway to reach the island. A single ride on the shuttle will set you back €2.

Mont Saint Michel

The Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel is a magnificent abbey that pays homage to the Archangel Saint Michael.

It stands proudly, offering visitors a breathtaking glimpse into the world of medieval religious architecture.

No visit to Mont Saint Michel is truly complete without immersing yourself in the rich history and spirituality of The Abbey.

This magnificent structure has stood as a beacon of worship and pilgrimage for countless centuries, captivating the hearts and minds of all who venture within its walls.

Step into this architectural masterpiece and be transported back in time to experience the captivating world of monastic life.

The Abbey is a captivating place that encompasses various areas designed for both daily activities and spiritual practices. Among these spaces are the scriptorium, refectory, and cloister.

Bay of Saint Michel

Mont Saint Michel, like numerous medieval cities worldwide, boasts impressive ramparts encircling its majestic structure.

These fortified walls served as a vital defense mechanism, safeguarding the city and its inhabitants from potential threats.

The scenic trail gracefully winds around the perimeter of the mountain, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn.

From the ramparts, you can see the charming village nestled below. Look upwards, and marvel at the majestic abbey perched high, seemingly touching the heavens.

And as your eyes extend further, behold the magnificent Bay of Saint Michel, stretching out in all its grandeur, inviting you to explore its mystical waters.

Prepare to have your omelet-making knowledge turned upside down! When it comes to a “Normandie omelet,” one particular place in Mont-Saint-Michel is a must-visit.

Nestled along the charming Grand Rue, just a stone’s throw from the city’s entrance lies the renowned culinary gem known as La Mère Poulard.

This esteemed restaurant has garnered widespread acclaim for its mastery in crafting omelets using time-honored techniques.

Since 1888, the art of crafting mouthwatering omelets has been perfected by La Mère Poulard.

Visitors are not only invited but encouraged to witness the mesmerizing process unfold before their very eyes. Witness the mesmerizing process unfold before your very eyes through their open kitchen.

If you’re in the mood, take a moment to relax and savor a sample of this culinary creation. Note that the prices inside the Mont can be quite high, as it is a popular tourist destination.

Musee d'Orsay

Mont-Saint-Michel is also home to some interesting museums. The Maritime and Ecology Museum provides the opportunity to learn about the tides, which are an essential part of the way of life on the island.

You’ll also learn about the efforts being made to bring back the maritime atmosphere of the Mount, which will be explained to you.

At the Musée Historique, you’ll find items that give you a look into the life of the monks and prisoners who have called Mont Saint Michel home over the ages.

Archeoscope is a multimedia show that dives into the history of hamlet.

Guided Tours to Mont-Saint-Michel

  • If you don’t want the hassle of renting a car or using public transportation to visit Mont-Saint-Michel, join a guided tour instead. You may expect a long day because the journey from Paris takes four hours, but you will have a guide, tickets that allow you to avoid the line, and parking will be taken care of for you. Here are some of the highly-rated Paris to Mont&Saint-Michel day tours to consider:

This is a full-day excursion to the remarkable UNESCO site, the Gothic Abbey, at Mont-Saint-Michel and to see the medieval monuments located there. You can choose an option that allows you to go at your leisure, such as an audio guide, a guided tour, or just a ticket.

Relax in an airconditioned bus that will take you to the mount, and take in stunning views of the French countryside on the way.

Once in Mont-Saint-Michel, discover the amazing structures that make up the walled city, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a world-historic site since 1979.

Take your time to explore the rocky islet at your own pace. You may reach the abbey that is located at the very top of the town by climbing along the ramparts. Before departing Mont-Saint-Michel in the late afternoon, take in the beautiful views of the bay that surrounds the island.

To book this tour click here.

In this day tour, you’ll explore the winding alleys of Mont-Saint-Michel and take in the sights of its historic buildings. Discover its towering spires, massive walls, and winding alleyways.

Learn more about the community of Mont-Saint-Michel and its fortified abbey dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel with the help of an audio guide. This tour also includes tastings of Pommeau and Calvados, two of the best ciders in the world, produced in this town.

The roughly six-hour tour’s duration and order are both affected by the tides. You’ll go on a tour of a tidal flat, learning about its fascinating ecosystem and the dangerous quicksand that once trapped pilgrims. Then you’ll visit the village and the monastery, and the guide will provide an entertaining account of the area’s past.

You’ll be exploring the abbey’s Gothic architecture and rich history after lunch. Relics of the abbey’s usage as a jail following the French Revolution, such as a “hamster wheel” built to fit a human, are on display for tourists. You will take the train back to Paris after your abbey visit, arriving in time for dinner.

Practical tips for the day trip

  • November and early December are the best months to visit Mont Saint Michel because of the lack of tourists. Fewer tourists also show up at the end of January, February, and March.
  • If you really want to visit Mont Saint Michel in the summer but don’t want to deal with the throngs of tourists, we recommend going either very late in the day (after 3 p.m.) or very early in the morning (before 9 a.m.).
  • If you are visiting Mont-Saint-Michel during the summer, make the most of it by staying until around 7 pm for the stunning light and sound show, which usually has an extra charge.
  • Keep in mind that Mont Saint Michel has a lot of stairways and steps. Those who use wheelchairs or have mobility issues will find it challenging to get around here. It’s best to have a companion when you visit.
  • To fully enjoy your exploration of Mont-Saint-Michel, it’s essential to equip yourself with a reliable pair of walking shoes.
  • It is advisable to avoid carrying a large bag. The bustling streets are filled with narrow passageways and a sea of people. When considering purchasing souvenirs, it’s a great idea to invest in a practical and versatile item like a foldable tote bag.
  • If you want to buy souvenirs, it’s best to steer clear of the stores in Mont-Saint-Michel. Instead, visit Maison Pélerin, conveniently located just a short 5-minute drive away. Here, you can buy MSM items such as caramels, black garlic sourced from the bay, and a heavenly collection of cookies, lovingly baked by the talented sisters of the Abbey.

DISCOVERING MONT SAINT-MICHEL

The architecture of Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay are the most popular tourist sites in Normandy . Mont Saint Michel was listed an historical monument in 1874 and the site has been named since 1979 as UNESCO World Heritage .

Mont Saint Michel was one of the most fabulous achievements of the Middle Ages. You will be amazed by the prowess of its monastic architecture seeming to emerge from the waters of the bay. You will discover during this tour the medieval city and the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.

Legend of the Origin of Mont Saint-Michel

According to legend, Mont Saint-Michel was founded in 708 after the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, the bishop of Avranches, and commanded him to build a church on the rock then known as Mont Tombe. The archangel insisted three times, even going so far as to pierce the bishop's skull to prove his seriousness. In response to these divine visions, Aubert built the first sanctuary on this isolated site, thus marking the beginning of the transformation of Mont Tombe into Mont Saint-Michel. This place quickly became an important pilgrimage center and a major monastic complex, famous for its impressive architecture and spiritual significance.

Magical Atmosphere

Mont Saint-Michel exudes a magical and timeless atmosphere that captivates the imagination of its visitors. Whether wandering through the paved alleys of the medieval village, exploring the underground galleries of the fortification, or watching the sunset from the ramparts, every moment invites contemplation.

Delicious Cuisine

The restaurants and cafes at Mont Saint-Michel offer delicious regional cuisine that highlights local products, including fresh seafood from the bay. Visitors can enjoy traditional dishes such as Mère Poulard's omelette or the famous Breton galettes, all while enjoying the breathtaking view of the bay.

With its impressive architecture, captivating history enriched by legends, or its enchanting ambiance, a visit to Mont Saint-Michel promises a memorable experience that will remain etched in the memory of visitors.

Enjoy your visit and discover Mont Saint-Michel : admire the bay , stroll on the ramparts , and browse through the tinny shops of the village.

Fun & Knowledgeable, English Speaking Guide

The Adventure Begins

Rise early to reach your meeting point in front if the Church Notre-Dame de Compassion, and board your private bus from Paris. Once you’ve settled into your seat in the early-morning, you’ll have the chance to catch up on sleep, before we stop for a mid-route pit stop during which you can stretch your legs and pick up some breakfast should you wish.

As we approach the magnificent island, which depending on the tides is either encircled by water or by mud flats, your knowledgeable guide will prepare you for what is to come by providing some background information on the awe-inspiring UNESCO-listed island. Listen to interesting anecdotes about the history of this abbey, the island and the surrounding region of Normandy, whose stunning scenery should be visible through the windows of the bus.

Medieval Island Mont Saint Michel

The island is strategically placed between Normandy and Brittany. Due to the hundred years war between England and France, the island's importance became even more prominent as a stronghold and defensive structure. The island would serve as a military stronghold for the region, warding off British attackers during recurrent sieges.

Upon arrival on the island, your guide will show you around during an orientation tour that will ensure you manage to see all the most important attractions, leaving you outside the most famous of them all, the hilltop Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. After getting to grips with the layout and major points of interest, you will have a few free hours to explore by yourself at a sightseeing pace that matches your desired speed and stamina. You might want to soak up the splendor of the abbey interior with an audio guide tour or simply stroll the wonderfully picturesque streets in search of the perfect photo opportunity.

Mont Saint-Michel Abbey

Mont Saint-Michel abbey began humbly enough in the eighth century, when – citing orders from Archangel Michael himself – bishop Aubert built a church on this small and secluded rock island. The church was later expanded during the medieval era, becoming more and more vertiginous with every addition, and attracting an increasingly large number of pilgrims.

During the French revolution, the monks were kicked out of the monastery and the area became a prison for refractory priests. In 1811, a decree declared that the abbey would hold common law prisoner and some political prisoners like Armand Barbés and Auguste Blanqui.

You might want to soak up the splendor of the abbey interior using our convenient self-guided audio app or simply stroll the wonderfully picturesque streets in search of the perfect photo opportunity.

Please note that your self-guiding app should be download on your smartphone prior to tour. Credentials and download instructions will be provided on your voucher upon booking.

Sit-down or Lunch on the Go

You may also want to sit down for lunch at an establishment of your choosing. Options range from wooden rafter-adorned dining rooms serving rustic meat-focused fare to sophisticated restaurants with bay-view terraces where seafood from the surrounding waters takes center stage. For a more casual and characteristically Breton meal, stop by one of Mont Saint-Michel’s crêperies and feast on galettes (buckwheat pancakes) paired with Normandy cider. Your guide will recommend restaurants to quell your cravings and match your budget.

In late afternoon, re-board the bus for the return journey to your original meeting point in Paris, which will see passengers back in the City of Lights well in advance of bed time. This fabulous tour of Mont Saint-Michel offers a hassle-free way to explore the island during a day trip from Paris with plenty of free time ensuring you don’t have to adhere to a rigid sightseeing schedule.

We only got 2 hrs there what wasn't enough time to explore the Abbey and to something to eat.

Wonderful Day

Years ago, I saw a picture of a fairytale-looking castle that was built on an island surrounded by water. After doing some research about France, I discovered that this picturesque island is Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France. It is so surreal-looking that the Disney movie Tangled modeled their fictional kingdom off of this real life fairytale castle. Being a four hour drive away from downtown Paris, this is definitely pushing the limits of a Paris “day trip.” But I really wanted to see this mythical looking tidal island in person, so we booked a Mont Saint-Michel day trip with The Tour Guy. The coach bus was really comfortable and made the trip seem short. Our guide did a great job explaining France and Mont Saint-Michel’s history on the bus, and we were very thankful to have transportation provided for us because the island feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere! In the abbey, we had an audio guide that explained the church’s history. Throughout the day we learned that Mont Saint-Michel became a place of worship all the way back in 708 AD! Over the centuries, it withstood several sieges and became a prominent place for religious pilgrimages. The island itself is actually an entire village stacked onto a relatively small area. Like most places in medieval times, the working class occupied the lower areas, the knights lived in the middle, and the church was built all the way at the top. It was amazing getting to wander the narrow streets, stroll through the abbey, and walk on the tidal ground surrounding the island. Walking around the grounds, I felt like we were transported back in time. It was an amazing experience getting to see this magical island – I’m so glad The Tour Guy offers a day trip so that we didn’t have to worry about the details of getting there and could just fully enjoy it!

by Claire ROBINSON , Region Lovers | January 31, 2023 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)

A trip to France may seem incomplete without a visit to the wonder that is Mont-Saint-Michel. Here is our complete guide to plan a 1-day trip from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel: your options for car, train, organized tours, private tour… And all our tips to have a good day!

Excursion from Paris to Mont Saint Michel 1 day tour

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices, and paying all our bills in full.

Excursion from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel

Can we visit the mont-saint-michel from paris in 1 day.

Yes. It is possible. The day will be long, very long. You should plan to leave early and return late. But it is quite feasible. And you must realize that you will spend more time in transportation than on site.

Arrival on the Mont-Saint-Michel

Is it worth it?

It depends. If you only have 3 days in Paris and it’s your first time visiting the French capital, there are enough great places to see there. We do not recommend it. If you are staying in Paris for a week, then taking a day trip to discover the unique place that is the Mont-Saint-Michel is worth it.

However, you should know that it is a very touristy and small place. If you don’t like crowds, you may find that it’s not worth it. In this case, we recommend you to spend a night there, because the experience is exceptional. Read more about this.

Unique village of Mont-Saint-Michel

Where is Mont-Saint-Michel in relation to Paris? How far away? Card

Beware, on a map, it may look close but it is not next door.

  • West of Paris, almost in a straight line
  • On the border between Normandy and Brittany
  • Distance as the crow flies = 284 km (177miles)
  • Distance by road = 360 km (224 miles)
  • Driving time from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel = 4h to 4h30 (depending on traffic jams)

Map of the Mont-Saint-Michel

How long does it take to get from Paris to Mont Saint Michel?

Travel time depends on your mode of transportation:

  • By car: 4h to 4h30
  • By bus (organized tour): 4h to 4h30
  • by train: 4h to 5h depending on the options – but you have to add the waiting time between trains and buses (that can make it 5 to 7h). We warn you right away, it’s not easy

It takes a 14 hour day to have some time to explore.

How to visit Mont-Saint-Michel from Paris: best options

The top 3 options are:

  • On an organized tour the road is still faster and with a driver, you will not be tired. This is the option we recommend when you only have one day. See the options on Viator or on Getyourguide .
  • By car to have as much freedom as possible and more time on site – but you will have to drive a lot Book your car on our preferred platform
  • By train the best option is the TGV to Rennes and then the bus, but you have to make sure you get there because there are a limited number of buses during the day. There is no direct train. Book your train ticket

We clarify each option in detail in the following sections.

And for even more tips, check out our full article on visiting Mont-Saint-Michel .

Mont-Saint-Michel road

How long to visit Mont-Saint-Michel

If you go alone without a guide, we advise you to plan a minimum of 3 hours on site, but 5 or 6 hours will be more comfortable. We saw people leaving after 2 hours but it was impossible to get the atmosphere, to visit the abbey and the whole village in 2 hours. Don’t forget that once at the parking lot you still have to take the shuttle (15 min) or walk to the village (50min).

Be careful though, if you have difficulty getting around, Mount Saint Michael will be a difficult place for you. There are many slopes, uneven pavements and stairs.

Opening hours

The Mont-Saint-Michel remains open at all hours. It is a village. The shuttle operates from 7:30 a.m. to at least 11:00 p.m. in summer and from 8:30 a.m. to at least 10:00 p.m. in winter. The abbey is open at least from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm – reserve your entryslot The museums are open at least from 10 am to 5 pm.

Option 1 – Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel in an organized tour

organized bus tours to Mont-Saint-Michel

  • Easy – no headaches to plan
  • Possibility to sleep in the bus
  • No fatigue from doing a lot of driving
  • You can look at the scenery or do something else on the way
  • Lots of additional information provided by the guide to learn more about the place

Disadvantages

  • The noise of the group
  • Less freedom in planning – limited time on site (about 3 hours), you have to leave when the bus leaves!

arrival on the island of Mont-Saint-Michel

If you are traveling in the summer, we advise you to book early to make sure you have a seat. This is one of the most popular excursions in France.

Choose one that includes the entrance ticket to the abbey. It would be a shame to come and not visit it at the top of the island.

See all options on Viator or on Getyourguide .

Our additional tips

We advise you to sit on the right side of the bus. That way, on the road, as you approach Mont-Saint-Miche, you will see it in the distance.

We advise you to take without the lunch option. Grab a sandwich, and make the most of your time there

Be sure to choose a tour that lasts about 14 hours so that it includes enough time on site.

The bus does not take you to the foot of the village. It stops at the parking lots and you have to take the free shuttle bus or walk to the fortifications.

We recommend this tour , which lets you choose how to visit the abbey part (audioguide, guide or entrance ticket only) – See details and availability

Path and shuttle to Mont-Saint-Michel

Option 2 – Paris Mont-Saint-Michel private tour with driver

To have the advantages of the organized tour without the disadvantages, you can choose the private tour version. It’s a bigger budget but:

  • The trip is more comfortable
  • You have privileged information
  • You adapt a little more to your needs
  • You can customize the tour

We recommend this tour with transportation in a luxury vehicle, private guide, visit of the village and the abbey and information on the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel in general. See details, price and availability .

Option 3 – How to get from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel by car

  • All the flexibility on the program
  • You can come very early to avoid the crowds
  • You can come late to see the sunset
  • You can also drive around the bay for more views
  • 4h to 4h30 of driving in each direction, that’s a lot
  • No guide to give you more explanations
  • Toll prices for the fastest route (otherwise it takes 1 hour longer each way)
  • Parking prices (per car with free shuttle included)

Highway to Mont-Saint-Michel

You must reserve 2 items. Remember to do this early if you are traveling in the summer.

  • Reserve your ticket slot in the abbey – see here for availability
  • Reserve your rental car
  • Think there will be a toll cost

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
  • Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
  • There is a lot of demand, book it early .

day trip paris mont saint michel

The nearest train station is Pontorson-Mont-Saint-Michel. But you still need a shuttle to reach the Mont-Saint-Michel parking lots.

There is no direct train to Mont-Saint-Michel out of season (you have to go through Caen or Rennes). In summer (end of June to beginning of September), there is one round trip per day. This is very limiting. This is not our preferred option.

  • Train from Paris Montparnasse station to Pontorson station by TGV (high speed train) Duration 1h45
  • Bus In summer, the company Kéolis Armor makes 3 round trips per day The journey takes 1h10

Book your train ticket

Option 5 – The Mont-Saint-Michel train (via Villedieu-les-Poeles – in summer)

Regional trains in France

This is a fairly quick option, and usually the cheapest.

  • Train from Paris Montparnasse station to Villedieu-les-Poêles station by Nomad train Duration 2h50
  • Bus In summer, the SNCF (French train agency) has a shuttle that connects with the trains. The journey takes 45min

The TGV and buses can fill up in summer, we advise you to book early. Book your train ticket

Option 6 – Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel by TGV and bus

TGV in France

The fastest option is the TGV high speed train to Rennes and then the bus. This is the fastest option, but high-speed rail can be expensive.

  • Train from Paris Montparnasse station to Rennes station by TGV (high speed train) Duration 1h45
  • Bus In summer, the company Kéolis Armor makes several round trips per day (more in summer than out of season). The journey takes 1h10

Alternative

You can continue by train to Pontorson-Mont-Saint-Michel station and then take a shorter bus. We do not recommend it.

You can rent a car in Renne and drive the rest of the way (1h15 drive).

Option 7 – Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel by train via Caen

This is a longer option but I still put it if you want to combine it with the Battle of Normandy museum in Caen (with a night at Mont-Saint-Michel or Caen).

  • Train from Paris St Lazare station to Caen station
  • Train from Caen station to Pontorson station
  • Bus Shuttle service of less than 30 minutes between Pontorson station and the Mont-Saint-Michel parking lots.

Tips for your Paris – Mont-Saint-Michel tour

What day to visit.

If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, don’t visit on a weekend. On weekdays, it’s about the same in attendance but still with quite a few people. Don’t think you’re alone!

What is the price of the Mont-Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel is a village in France. This is a non-paying venue. You can enter for free. Its access is free. Stroll through the narrow streets, climb the ramparts, admire from the dam… it’s free. The shuttle from the parking lots is also free.

  • parking as close as possible to the mountain – then you have to walk or take the shuttle
  • the visit of the Merveille (the abbey), a must – see our article – reserve your entry slot
  • entrance to the museums – there are 4 museums in the village. They round out the experience a bit with history and artifacts. But these are small private museums… Buy a combined ticket
  • And of course the restaurants that have higher prices, given their location in a tourist area.

How to dress and what to bring

stairs in the Mont-Saint-Michel

The most important thing is to have good shoes. It is an old village, on a small rocky island. Therefore, there are old cobblestones, steep slopes and many stairs. Heels are strongly discouraged. Choose stable and comfortable shoes.

Moreover, the mountain is located in a bay open to the English Channel. The weather is therefore changeable (and not tropical). It can be sunny, then rainy and then be shaken by strong winds. Bring different layers of clothing for wind, heat and rain

And if you are crossing the bay, boots may be necessary. Follow the instructions of your guide.

What to see at Mont-Saint-Michel

Here is an overview to help you find your way around. It includes the different sections of the village: Grande Rue, abbey, ramparts…

See our complete article on what to do in Mont-Saint-Michel .

Map of the streets of Mont Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel in 2 hours – not to be missed

2 hours is really limited. We recommend:

  • take the shuttle
  • admire the island from the footbridge
  • go up through the ramparts to the entrance of the abbey
  • go back down the main street
  • take the shuttle back

Mont-Saint-Michel in 4 hours – not to be missed

  • take the shuttle (or walk if you are good walkers to enjoy the views of the mountain)
  • go up to the abbey by the ramparts
  • visit the abbey (1h to 1h30)
  • take the main street and explore the alleys and stairs around

Cloister of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel in 6 hours

  • archer if you are good walkers to enjoy the views on the mountain: with the fields and the sheep, with the footbridge, with the sand of the bay / or the water
  • visit the abbey (1h to 1h30) – see our guide
  • take the main street and explore the alleys and stairs around (see our article on the streets of Mont-Saint-Michel )

Recommended Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip

Today, we’re diving into the captivating history and beauty of Mont Saint-Michel.

Picture this: a rugged island rising dramatically from the misty waters of the Normandy coast. That’s where our journey begins. Legend has it that this rocky haven was chosen by Archangel Michael himself, a divine inspiration that led to the founding of the first chapel here in the 8th century. Fast forward through the ages, and Mont Saint-Michel has evolved into a symbol of resilience and spiritual devotion.

Mont Saint-Michel Day Trip

History of Mont Saint-Michel

Walking through the cobblestone streets of the village, it feels like stepping back in time. Each building whispers secrets of the past, from the bustling medieval markets to the quiet cloisters where monks once roamed. But it’s the abbey perched atop the island that truly commands attention. Imagine the sweat and toil of craftsmen as they carved stone and raised spires towards the heavens, creating a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that still stands strong today.

Inside the abbey, the air hums with the echoes of ancient prayers. Every corner holds a story, from the soaring arches of the nave to the peaceful solitude of the chapels. And when you step out onto the terrace, prepare to be spellbound. The vista unfolds before you like a painting – the shimmering waters of the bay, the patchwork of salt marshes, and the distant horizon where sky meets sea. It’s a view that has inspired pilgrims and poets for centuries.

Mont Saint-Michel is a historic island commune in Normandy, France. Its story spans over a thousand years:

  • Early Beginnings : Mont Saint-Michel was initially settled by monks in the 8th century.
  • Abbey Construction : In the 11th century, construction began on the iconic abbey that dominates the island’s skyline.
  • Spiritual Center : It became a major center of religious pilgrimage during the Middle Ages.
  • Military Role : During the Hundred Years’ War, it served as a stronghold, showcasing its strategic importance.

  • Includes : English speaking guide, transport to Mont Saint-Michel, and entry to the abbey

If you’re interested in medieval monuments, you’ll love this day trip to Mont Saint-Michel. You also benefit from the wonderful views of the Normandy countryside along your way.

The ancient ramparts guarding the island are inspirational. Many invaders have attempted to take these walls without success. You get great views across the sea and toward the French mainland.

The winding streets leading up to the monastery are lined with amazing medieval buildings. Over 60 buildings on the island are listed historical buildings. There are more historic buildings than people who live on the island!

Explore the fascinating abbey at your own pace or take an audio tour for more detailed information. The ancient cloisters, monks’ dining hall, and Romanesque abbey church are beautifully preserved. Admire the medieval architecture that has stood so strong for almost a thousand years.

4. Best Value Tour: Full-Day Mont Saint Michel Tour From Paris

  • Departure Point : The Palais de Chaillot Architecture Museum
  • Departure Time: 7:00 AM
  • Includes : English speaking guide, transportation to Mont Saint-Michel, and tour of the island

This is a great day trip from Paris for anyone interested in French culture and history. Mont Saint-Michel has featured in key parts of France’s long history.

The fortress island has associations with William the Conqueror who invaded England from Normandy. It served as a symbol for French defiance against English tyranny during the Hundred Years War.

During your journey to Mont Saint-Michel, your guide will entertain you with stories from the history of the abbey. Before you even reach the island, you’ll be familiar with its history and enthusiastic to see the stones that match the images in your head.

On the island, your guide will lead you around to point out interesting structures and landmarks. There is so much on the island that this will only be an introduction.

You’ll then be free to explore the places you’re most interested in on your own. If you wish, you can take an audio-guided tour of the abbey or explore it by yourself at your own pace.

5. Best Small Group Tour: Small-Group Mont St Michel Tour & Cider Tasting From Paris

  • Departure Point : 6 Avenue de Wagram, Paris
  • Includes : English speaking guide, transport to Mont Saint-Michel, cider tasting, and tour of the abbey

If you’re interested in medieval history, you’ll love this excursion to Mont Saint-Michel. During the Hundred Years War, the English knights failed to capture this formidable island fortress. Today, all are welcome to climb its quaint winding streets to visit the ancient buildings above.

Enjoy a comfortable minibus transfer through the Normandy countryside from Paris. Normandy is renowned for its apples, and during your journey, you’ll make a stop to sample the local cider—Calvados and Pommeau.

When you reach Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll be greeted by the familiar sight of the ramparts of the island standing brave over the waves…or the sands, if the tide is out.

But don’t worry about access. In recent years, a road bridge has been built to improve transport to the mainland. On the island, you’ll be mesmerized by the charm of the medieval structures and narrow streets.

The low population of the island combined with continuous use has left its beautiful Gothic structures in remarkable preservation. It is a tangible reminder of the feudal philosophies of its age. The Church sits atop the hill just as God is above all.

The surrounding grand halls are representative of the noble classes, and the lowly fishermen’s huts are at the base of the settlement.

You’ll be transported from Rennes Railway Station to Mont Saint-Michel by private minibus. On the island, you’ll experience a 45-minute guided tour of the village and enjoy a walk out into the bay. Your naturalist guide will help you understand the unique ecology of the surrounding sands.

A further 2-hour tour of the fortified walls and Medieval city streets will help you understand the rich history of the island. It was once an important fortification which the English failed to capture despite several serious attempts during the Hundred Years War.

The highlight of your visit to the island will be a visit to the famous 11 th -century abbey on top of the hill. Inside, you’ll be impressed by the well-preserved Gothic architecture of one of the most beautiful churches in France.

Paris Travel Guide

In TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards 2019, Paris was ranked as the #2 Top Destination in the World. This is no surprise for a city famous for its food, art, and architecture.

Whether you’re looking for gourmet meals, a romantic getaway, a place to immerse yourself in fine art, or a family vacation, France’s capital city is a great destination for you.

Airports & Entry

The two best ways to travel to Paris are by air and by train.

Paris boasts 3 busy international airports which together form the world’s 5 th busiest airport combination and a major transport hub for Europe. Paris’ three international airports are Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris-Orly, and Beauvais-Tillé.

Paris is well served by a selection of budget airlines including Easyjet, Ryanair, French Bee, Transavia, and Norwegian. You can secure better deals by booking at least a month in advance and using a ticket price comparison website, like Omio . You can literally save hundreds of dollars by choosing the right flight. Because Paris is such a major transport hub, flights are very competitive.

Usually, you will find flying both the most affordable and easiest way to reach Paris. However, if you are traveling from a neighboring country, it is worthwhile checking into high-speed trains.

Paris is linked to neighboring countries by a network of high-speed rail links operated by SNCF . Although these trains take longer than flights, they transport their passengers from city center to city center. Flying, of course, usually requires a transfer to an airport some distance away from the city.

For example, if you’re traveling from London to Paris, a Eurostar train that passes through the famous Channel Tunnel will provide a relatively hassle-free journey when compared to flying. Also, in most cases, that journey will be quicker than flying because of the extra time taken up waiting for connections at the airports. And it also gives you bragging rights for using one of the world’s most famous undersea tunnels.

When planning your journey, compare the costs of flights and high-speed trains and decide which is the best option for you. Often flying will be cheapest, but if the cost isn’t too much more, the train will be relatively more comfortable and involve fewer complications.

Planning Tips

Paris is an amazing destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Here are 5 tips to help you on your way. On your first day, taking a guided tour of the city will help you zero in on areas you would like to spend more time in will help a lot.

Tip #1: Watch out for Mondays and Tuesdays

When planning your itinerary for your stay in Paris, note that many major attractions, such as the Palace of Versailles and the catacombs, are closed on Mondays. A few attractions are closed on Tuesdays instead, including the Natural History Museum and the Pompidou Center. There are various major attractions open every day, like the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris, so go there on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Tip #2: Buy unique souvenirs and gifts

Paris is, of course, the center of fashion. However, there is one relatively unfashionable item of dress that you might want to pick up during your stay in France’s capital city. The béret is the cliché headwear of France, and you’ll see cheap versions “made in China” in every souvenir shop you pass. But, if you want to buy the real thing, look out for clothing stores that sell bérets made in France. La Cerise Sur Le Chapeau is a well-known chain store around Paris that stocks French bérets.

However, if you’re looking for something distinctly Parisian that few people will own, how about a piece of the Eiffel Tower? Victor Lustig once sold the Eiffel Tower twice in an elaborate con, but this opportunity isn’t a scam like that. During repairs to the tower, inevitably some parts need to be replaced. The removed rivets are turned into unique souvenirs only available in the Eiffel Tower’s official gift shop.

Tip #3: Stay safe while visiting Paris

Although Paris is considered a relatively safe city, don’t forget that Kim Kardashian had all her bling stolen while she was staying in a vacation apartment there. Just like any other busy city, you will find purse-snatchers and pickpockets in crowded locations, especially around tourist hotspots.

Just use common sense. Keep your passport and other valuable documents in a hotel safe. Keep your money in a money belt. Don’t wear ostentatious jewelry in public places.

If you see abandoned packages or luggage in a crowded public place, especially a Metro station, distance yourself from the package and call 112. Paris is not a stranger to terrorist attacks.

Tip #4: Book in advance, especially during the summer

Paris is a popular destination in summer and during Christmas and Easter. Ensure you book your hotel rooms and any tours you wish to join well in advance of your vacation. You often get better air flight deals when you book in advance, and that is especially true during the summer.

The best time to visit Paris for bargain prices and fewer crowds is during the shoulder season—just before or just after summer. The weather is still fine, but there are simply fewer tourists.

Tip #5: Learn a few French phrases before traveling to Paris

The French are a proud people, not least of all Parisians. They are rightly concerned about the dilution of their native tongue by English words and phrases from Hollywood movies and internationally popular songs. So, if you’ve ever heard someone say that French people are rude, it’s probably because the person telling you expected them to speak English.

Almost all French people you’ll meet speak English. But if you greet them in French and use a few words and phrases like “merci” and “s’il vous plaît”, they will be more likely to treat you with respect in return. You don’t need to speak more than a handful of phrases, and you don’t even need a good accent. Parisians will appreciate your effort.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Paris is recognized by many as the heart of the culinary world. Many internationally-acclaimed chefs trained there, and the terms used in gourmet kitchens worldwide originate in Paris. You won’t have any problem finding good food in the capital of France.

Traditional croissants are a great breakfast treat in any Parisian café. The best area for traditional cafés is the Boulevard Saint-Germain, a tree-lined avenue in the 6 th Arrondissement. The Neo Café is highly rated. But if you’re in a hurry and want your breakfast on the go, grab a fresh pain-au-chocolat from one of the family bakeries (patisseries).

Bo&mie in the 2 nd Arrondissement is the top-rated patisserie in Paris and close to attractions such as the Louvre and the Pompidou Center. In the early morning, you’ll often see Parisians walking out from patisseries with freshly baked baguettes. They do love freshly baked bread rather than long-life bread found on supermarket shelves.

If you want to find the most exclusive, Michelin-stared restaurants, explore the area around the Champs-Elysées. That’s where you’ll find many of the oldest restaurants in Paris. But, if you have a less discerning palate, the same area is where you’ll find McDonald’s, Burger King, and Starbucks. The top-rated French gourmet restaurant here is Pierre Gagnaire on Rue Balzac. Be prepared to spend at least €200 per person and you will require a reservation.

While in Paris, you should try at least one distinctively French dish, like coq au vin or ratatouille. If you’re feeling courageous, you could opt for snails or frogs’ legs…just so you can say that you did.

You should consider taking a French cooking class while you are in Paris. Learn from the best and make the dishes you love at home!

Snacks & sweets

For traditional street food, try the amazing crepes that you can buy from many street corners. You can eat these tasty pancake treats while you walk with savory or sweet fillings.

Before you leave Paris, ensure you sample some of its amazing desserts. The Crème Brulée is a delicious traditional sweet, and meringues are sweet and satisfying but also very messy.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Paris is famous as a getaway for romantic weekends, so of course you’ll find a rich variety of nightlife.

The most famous nightspot in Paris is undoubtedly The Moulin Rouge in the area of the 18 th arrondissement known as Pigalle. This historic cabaret club is where the Can-can dance was created and a favorite haunt for many famous celebrities over the past century, from Toulouse-Lautrec to Frank Sinatra. You can enjoy a cabaret here for around €145 ($160).

However, be aware that Pigalle is regarded as the red-light district. Watch out for overly friendly ladies and gentlemen inviting you into dance clubs in this district.

Champs-Elysées

The most exclusive nightclubs, restaurants, and live music venues are found in the 8 th arrondissement, around the Champs-Elysées. Many of the clubs here are impossible to enter unless you are a recognizable celebrity, royal, or billionaire.

You’ll need to dress up smart to get into any of the decent clubs here. And if you do enter, be careful whose drink you nudge and spill! But a word of caution — the exclusive clubs in this area also include a few strip clubs! They’re very different from the strip clubs in Pigalle, but still strip clubs. One to watch out for is the famous Whisper Club .

An example of a bar in palatial settings where you might be concerned about scuffing the silverware and smearing the crystal is simply called Le Bar in the George V Four Seasons Hotel.

This same area is also home to more touristy haunts which you won’t find so difficult to enter. However, these often contain more tourists than locals, so don’t expect a uniquely French experience. The club with the most laid-back reputation is the Dogstar Club . You might get past the bouncers without a $10,000 watch on your wrist and a designer cocktail dress.

Place Vendome

The 1 st arrondissement is literally the center of the city around the Louvre and where you’ll find boutique hotels with historic bars frequented by celebrities and the beautiful rich. Most of these hotels have strict dress rules to enter the bar, and you’ll need a healthy income to survive the night.

The area around the Metro Bastille, on the borders of the 4 th , 11 th , and 12 th arrondissement, is where the younger and more relaxed crowd hang out. You’ll find decent nightclubs, cafés, live music venues, and dive bars frequented by local 20-somethings.

Check out the Niki Club on the Rue de Lappe for a casual night, or maybe the Black Star Club in Passage Thiere if you enjoy live rock music or jazz.

If you enjoy the LGBT scene, the Marais district in the southern part of the 3 rd arrondissement and northern part of the 4 th is where you’ll find welcoming cafés, bars, and live music venues where all genders and sexualities are made welcome. Café Cox is one bar legendary for its welcomes.

Getting Around

When you’re trying to find your way around, you might get confused by the way addresses sometimes emphasize the arrondissement, sometimes the name of the area, and sometimes the zip code. To simplify this a little, the last two digits of the zip code are the arrondissement number. So, the Eiffel tower is at 75007, meaning it’s in the 7 th arrondissement.

You might be surprised to discover it’s not in the 1 st arrondissement since it’s so central to the city. However, the way the arrondissements work is beginning in the Louvre — the 1 st arrondissement and true center of Paris (where the king’s palace is) — and then radiates out from there. The first layers are numbered from the north clockwise and wrap around the central arrondissements. The arrondissements get larger as you get further from the center.

Most of the main attractions are found in arrondissements 1 through 8, which form the core of the city. This means that it’s possible to walk from attraction to attraction. But if you want to go a little quicker, Paris boasts an affordable and efficient public transport system. And the best way to get around is on the Metro.

With 300 Metro stations, everywhere in Paris is within a 10-minute walk of a station. A Paris Visite Travel Pass provides unlimited Metro travel within a specified zone for a set period of time. The Travel Pass may also be used on trams, buses, and the RER underground train system. A 1-day ticket for Zones 1 to 3 costs €12 ($13).

There are even more bus stops than Metro stations and bus services run every 5 to 7 minutes. This means that buses are often more convenient for shorter journeys than the Metro. Since a Travel Pass allows you to swap between the Metro and buses, you can simply take the bus when it’s most convenient but use the Metro for longer destinations. To learn which would be most convenient for your planned journey, you can check the route maps on the RATP (Regie Autonome des Transports) website .

Hire bicycles

Like many capital cities in Europe, Paris has a public bicycle hire scheme. Around the city, you’ll find 1,800 Velib bike stations with 24,000 bicycles. You simply require a credit card with a chip to rent a Velib bike.

There are over 16,000 taxis in Paris. Taxis are an expensive but convenient mode of transport. You can take a taxi from a taxi rank or hail one down in the street.

While you can opt to hire a car in Paris, be aware that Parisian drivers have a bad reputation for safety. Also, the congested roads are difficult to navigate and parking places rare. If you really want to enjoy your time in Paris, walk or use public transport.

Accommodations

When choosing where to stay in Paris, you should consider why you’re there. If your main interest is in taking your family to Disneyland, Paris, then you’ll find accommodation near there more spacious and much more affordable than most places in the city.

However, if you want to visit the historical and cultural attractions, then you should confine yourself to the central areas between the 1 st and the 8 th arrondissements, where hotels are within walking distance of the main sites.

Below, I’ve divided the kind of accommodation by area. However, this is only a rough guide. You’ll find 5-star luxury hotels in the budget and family areas, and I’ve previously stayed in a very cheap family guesthouse about 2-minutes-walk from the Arc de Triomphe.

You’ll find a lot of budget accommodation around the 5 th and part of the 6 th arrondissements simply because these areas are a little further from the most popular tourist attractions and famous streets.

But if you don’t mind a little more walking, the area of Montmartre is still pretty central and boasts character-filled, winding streets. And with Metro stations dotted all around the area, it’s as convenient as any other central location if you plan to get around on public transport.

An example budget hotel in this area is the Hotel Marignan  on a quiet street in the Latin Quarter. This historic hotel has hosted many famous guests, such as EE Cummings, and is within walking distance of Notre Dame.

The Rive Gauche area of the rest of the 6 th and the 7 th arrondissements is an easy walk from places like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. This makes the affordable hotels there perfect for families with young and impatient kids who just want to get there quick. Many of the hotels in this area vary between small boutique hotels and cozy, family-run hotels.

The aptly named Eiffel Rive Gauche Hotel is super close to the Eiffel Tower and would provide a great base for your family to explore the French capital.

While a few of the most exclusive hotels are in the 1 st arrondissement, the main selection of high-class hotels is found along the Champs-Elysees in the 8 th arrondissement. You’ll notice this coincides with where the most Michelin-starred restaurants and high-class bars and clubs are, many of which are attached to or inside the luxury hotels.

In terms of distance, the 1 st and 8 th arrondissements are neighbors, with the Champ-Elysees running between the Louvre area in the 1 st and the Arc de Triomphe in the 8 th . Government officials and important people have long made their home in the 8 th arrondissement, and it is considered the cultural heart of the capital.

A great example of a luxury hotel in this area is the Hotel de Crillon , which looks more like a palace or museum than a working hotel.

Although it’s fairly inland, Paris still benefits from an oceanic climate with cool but mild winters and pleasantly warm summers. Generally, the city sees light rainfall distributed evenly through the year, though sudden heavy showers can occur.

Paris gets coldest in January, with an average daily high of 45 0 F and a low of 37 0 F. During spring, the temperatures warm so that by April it reaches an average high of 60 0 F and low of 45 0 F. Spring is a great time to visit Paris because the flowers are blooming all around the city and the summer crowds have yet to descend upon the city.

The hottest month of the summer is July, with an average high of 77 0 F and low of 60 0 F. That’s when the city becomes crowded with visitors from all around the world. By October, the average high drops to 61 0 F and the low to 49 0 F. The fall is another great time to visit because the weather isn’t too cold but the crowds have diminished and the trees have donned their beautiful autumnal cloaks.

Attractions

The main attractions radiate out from the center of the city, which is the 1 st arrondissement.

The Louvre Palace in the 1st arrondissement was the main residence of the Kings of France from the 14 th century onward. Today it is much better known as the home of the world’s greatest art museum, the Musée du Louvre . If you want to see such world-famous masterpieces as the Venus de Milo sculpture and the Mona Lisa painting, then you should head straight for the glass pyramid in front of the grand palatial building.

The great cathedral of Notre-Dame in the 4 th arrondissement is so spectacular and famous that I cannot justify leaving it out of this list. However, please note that the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris is closed for at least the next four years and maybe more.

After the devastating fire of April 2019, the cathedral and nearby surrounding area were closed to public access until sufficient repairs can be made to make the area safe once again. You can still admire its amazing Gothic architecture from a distance and maybe catch a glimpse of some of the restoration work in progress.

Eiffel Tower

The most visited attraction in the center of Paris is the Eiffel Tower in the 7 th arrondissement. Although this renowned iron tower was erected as a temporary structure in 1889, it is still standing strong and looks good for another few centuries of service. The fact that it was the world’s tallest building when built is eye-opening when it is compared to the Empire State Building in NYC or the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, but it is still the best place for a panoramic view in Paris.

Arc de Triomphe

This triumphal arch in the 8 th arrondissement was commissioned by Napoleon but wasn’t built until 1836, long after his death. It stands on a huge roundabout at the northern end of the Champ-Elysees and is one of the most recognizable and photographed monuments in the capital. The Arc de Triomphe is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Flame of Remembrance that is kept alive in daily ceremonies.

You have to leave the city and travel 12 miles southwest to reach the Palace of Versailles , where Louis XIV moved his court in the 17 th century. Now this famous palace is a grand museum full of amazing reminders of the power of the great Sun King. Look around the interior and exterior of the palace for the many sun-emblems reminding visitors who lived here. But the true highlight for many visitors is the beautiful formal gardens that surround the palace.

Disneyland Paris

Also outside the city, despite its name, is Disneyland Paris, 20 miles to the east. This famous theme park is the most visited attraction in France. If you’re visiting Paris with children, you’ll probably want to devote two days to Disney because there are two separate parks here: Disneyland Park opened in 1992 and Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002. Inside both, you’ll find thrill rides for all ages as well as classic attractions, like actors dressed up as your favorite Disney characters and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. The easiest way to get to Disney Paris is with a shuttle and entrance ticket deal .

Day trip from paris to normandy and mont st michel.

  • Post published: 11 April 2015
  • Post category: Europe / France / Normandy / Paris and suburbs

A day trip from Paris to Normandy and Mont St Michel is the most popular itinerary in France. Indeed, after Paris , Mont St Michel is the most visited site in France with more than one million visitors per year. And it’s easy to understand why it attracts many people. The Mont St Michel is fascinating, unique and mysterious . Very close to shore in the English Channel, it is a rocky island with an 11th-century abbey built on it . This historical masterpiece is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list .

Mont Saint Michel

Read more about why I love it so much and scroll down for the tips to organise a day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel.

My memories of the mont st michel.

I have been to the Mont St Michel many times as I used to spend my summer holidays nearby when I was a kid. The last time I went, there was in February 2006 . These are my memories of this unforgettable and extraordinary place.

From the car park, it is already quite  impressive to see the rock standing there with nothing around it but sand or the sea… It is unbelievable how they managed, at that time, to build such a magnificent monument in this environment. Indeed, the scenery highly depends on the tides, which are the biggest in Europe. They are reputed to be very dangerous because they change very quickly in the bay, and the mount is surrounded by quicksands as well! Nowadays, we can access the Mont Saint Michel at any time, but it has not always been the case!

The place can be visited on foot only. I find it fun to explore the medieval streets with narrow passages and stairways that can lead you to a  beautiful view of the bay .

I have always been there during the off-peak season, and it was always busy, I cannot even imagine how it is during peak season as it is quite small. I would not allow more than one day for the visit ; I believe it is perfect to enjoy the site and the surrounding beautiful landscape thoroughly.

Tip : Book your ticket online before your visit to skip the queue! *

If you want to make a weekend out of your visit to Mont Saint Michel , I highly recommend you to check out the beautiful  Saint-Malo nearby!

How to organise a day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel

The Mont Saint Michel can be visited on a  day trip from Paris by joining a tour . If you don’t have much time, I believe that’s the best option for a day trip from Paris to Normandy and Mont St Michel. According to your budget, there are private day tours (click here for more info*) or tours by coach (click here for more info* ) that will take you from Paris to Mont St Michel.

I would not recommend going from Paris to Mont St Michel by car just for a day trip  as it is a 4-hour return trip, and that’s not including the queue when you try to reach the car park ( you can book your ticket online to skip the queue *).

It is possible to do a Mont St Michel day trip from Paris by public transport. Unfortunately, it’s not one of these easy day trips from Paris by train . You’ll need to take the high-speed train going from Paris to Rennes  in two hours (book it in advance to get the best prices – it can be as cheap as 16 euros if you’re lucky!), and then you’ll need another 90-minute trip (depending on traffic) by coach to reach the Mont St Michel  (15 euros). Pontorson, Saint-Malo and Dol are other stations nearby that you may want to check when planning a trip.

There are also airports nearby: Dinard is 70km away, Rennes is 75km away, and Nantes is 180km away. If you are in another European city, this can be a good way to land closer to Mont St Michel. However, taking a flight from Paris to Mont St Michel is not a good option.

If you decide to stay for one night , click here to view available accommodation nearby* .

Where is Mont St Michel?

Mont St Michel is located on the border of Normandy and Brittany , in the northwest of France. It’s on the English Channel, approximately 350km from Paris .

A lovely road trip around France could take you from Paris to the Loire Valley , then going back up via Saint-Malo and the Mont St Michel and back to Paris via Normandy and Rouen .

It takes about 45 minutes to walk from the parking lots to Mont Saint-Michel. Strolling across the bridge offers the chance to admire fabulous views of Mont Saint-Michel.

The Passeur (shuttle bus) picks up visitors at the Place des Navettes (near the Tourist Information Center) for a quick shuttle ride to Mont Saint-Michel. This free shuttle service runs frequently on a daily basis (between 7:30am and midnight) and takes less than 15 minutes to arrive at Mont Saint-Michel. The shuttle drop-off point is about 450 meters outside the ramparts that enclose the medieval village and abbey of Mont Saint-Michel.

2. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Car

Road to Mont Saint-Michel

The drive from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel takes between 3.5 and 4 hours. One route is to take the A13 motorway in the direction of Caen , then merge onto the A84 motorway towards Avranches in the direction of Rennes. This is the most direct and quickest driving route from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel.

Another route is to take the A11 motorway to Le Mans , then connect to the A81 motorway towards Fougères . This way takes slightly longer, but would be a good route to choose if you want to make stops in Chartres (to see its UNESCO-listed cathedral) and/or Le Mans (to wander its captivating historic center) in the Loire Valley or in Fougères (to visit a fairy-tale castle) in the Brittany region.

The real advantage of having a car is that you can extend your vacation itinerary and visit tourist attractions near Mont Saint-Michel in the Brittany and Normandy regions. For instance, Saint-Malo, Dinan, and Fougères in Brittany are all within a one-hour drive from Mont Saint-Michel. About a 1.5-hour drive from Mont Saint-Michel, Caen in Normandy is a good starting point for tours of the D-Day Landing Beaches and Memorials .

It is also helpful to have a car if you want to spend the night in Mont Saint-Michel. This is the ideal way to experience Mont Saint-Michel without the mobs of visitors, so that you can appreciate the serene tranquility and mystical ambience of the island in the morning before day-trippers arrive and in the evening after they leave.

There are only a handful hotels on Mont Saint-Michel (the most famous is the La Mère Poulard ). Keep in mind that you need to carry your luggage up the hill when you arrive at Mont Saint-Michel. Other accommodations are available on the mainland; these hotels feature parking lots, which makes things much easier if you have a car.

Renting a Car in Paris : Travelers can rent a car at Charles de Gaulle Airport or at one of several locations in central Paris. Convenient places to pick up a rental car in Paris include Europcar at the Gare Saint-Lazare in the 8th arrondissement; Europcar, Alamo, or Virtuo at the Gare Montparnasse in the 15th arrondissement; and AAA Luxury & Sport Car Rental in the 16th arrondissement, which also offers chauffeur services.

Parking Information : There are several paid parking lots for visitors near Mont Saint-Michel on the mainland in Beauvoir. You have to park in a specific lot, depending if you are visiting for the day or staying overnight at a hotel. All the parking lots are near the pedestrian path and bridge.

Crossing the Bay of Saint-Michel by Foot : If you wish to cross the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel by foot, you must take a guided walk led by an accredited guide . Taking an official guided walk ensures that you will cross the bay safely (when the tide is low enough).

Tourists should keep in mind that it is dangerous to walk across the bay at certain times, because the mud flats can have quicksand, and tides can rise quickly. An accredited guide knows the tide schedules and will only lead guided walks when it is safe to cross the bay.

3. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Bus

Bus heading to Mont Saint-Michel

There are several companies that provide public transportation by bus to Mont Saint-Michel. This is often the most affordable way to go, although a bus ride takes longer than driving.

The BlaBlaCar Bus is an excellent option for getting from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel on a budget. The bus departs from the Gare Routière Bercy-Seine in Paris and takes five hours and 45 minutes to arrive in Beauvoir. There are two stops (in Courbevoie and Caen) on the way.

The bus drops you off in Beauvoir near the pedestrian paths and bridge to Mont Saint-Michel. You can either walk or take the Passeur shuttle bus from there.

BlaBlaCar offers this bus service Thursday through Sunday, with one bus route a day (leaving Paris at 9:20am and arriving at 3:05pm). Taking the BlaBlaCar Bus only works for travelers who are planning to stay overnight in the Mont Saint-Michel area.

Transportation by bus also makes sense for travelers who are visiting Mont Saint-Michel as part of an itinerary through the Brittany region and/or the neighboring Normandy region. Top tourist destinations nearby (in Brittany) include the fishing village of Cancale, the beach resort of Dinard, and the medieval walled seaside town of Saint-Malo.

4. From Paris to Mont Saint-Michel by Train

Train tracks and Mont Saint-Michel

In terms of affordability and travel time, the train is a great choice of transportation from Paris to Mont Saint-Michel. The train ride is several hours quicker than the bus. However, the train is less convenient because you need to make multiple transfers. Travelers can check train schedules at the official SNCF site .

The most efficient SNCF route is the 2.5-hour TGV train (rapid-velocity train) from Paris Montparnasse station (in the direction of Saint-Malo) to the Dol-de-Bretagne station , which is 30 kilometers from Mont Saint-Michel. This route usually does not require making any connections (unless you take the train that stops in Rennes or Saint-Malo). From Dol-de-Bretagne, you can take a (30- to 45-minute) taxi ride to Mont Saint-Michel.

Another TGV train route option is from Paris Montparnasse station to Rennes in Brittany, which only takes 1.5 hours. In Rennes, you then take the TER Train (in the direction of Saint-Malo) to Dol-de-Bretagne, which takes 45 minutes. Once in Dol-de-Bretagne, follow the above instructions to get to Mont Saint-Michel.

The SNCF offers a direct train route, once daily, from Paris Montparnasse station to Mont Saint-Michel with a connection (10-minute stop) in Villedieu Les Poeles . The train departs from Paris Montparnasse station at 9:19am, and the entire journey takes three hours and 50 minutes, arriving at Mont Saint-Michel at 1:09pm. This option is best for an overnight stay in Mont Saint-Michel because of the limited number of trains returning to Paris.

The Olympic torch will finally enter France when it reaches the southern seaport of Marseille on Wednesday. And it’s already been quite a journey.

After being lit on April 16 in Ancient Olympia, the torch was carried around Greece before leaving Athens aboard a three-mast ship named Belem, headed for Marseille.

The Belem was first used in 1896, the same year the modern Olympics came back. It will be accompanied by more than 1,000 boats as it parades around the Bay of Marseille, before arriving at the Vieux-Port, or Old Port, and docking on a pontoon resembling an athletics tracks.

Torch bearers will carry the flame across Marseille the next day, the last stretch running on the roof of the famed Stade Vélodrome, home to Marseille’s passionate soccer fans.

After leaving Marseille, a vast relay route will be undertaken before the torch’s odyssey ends with the opening ceremony of the Games on July 26 in Paris.

Here’s a look at where the torch goes before reaching Paris:

MONT-SAINT-MICHEL

The torch is due to reach the famed and visually stunning site of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy on May 31.

Located in an area of raised land surrounded by water, the island fortress looks like it was created for a Game of Thrones film set. But it’s real, and very old.

The Pride House is pictured in Paris, Friday, May 17, 2024. The boat, moored between the Grand Palais and the Place de la Concorde in the city center, is meant to be a safe space for LGBTQ athletes and visitors during the Olympics and Paralympics this summer. (AP Photo/Tom Nouvian)

So old that it already existed during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France, from 1337 to 1453. An English attack was even fended off. Later it became a prison, and in 1979 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Every years swarms of tourists are in awe of its raw and haunting beauty.

ACROSS THE OCEANS

The torch travel route is even more unique considering it takes a detour through France’s overseas territories called the Relais des Océans, or Ocean Relay. Riding the waves of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, it will be in French Guiana on June 9 before hitting New Caledonia on June 11.

Next is the island of Réunion at Saint-Denis — coincidentally the same name as the Paris suburb with the Olympic village — before reaching Papeete in the surfing realm of Tahiti , then Baie-Mahault in Gaudeloupe and finally Fort-de-France in Martinique.

The torch comes back to France on June 18 in the southern city of Nice.

FROM SEA BREEZE TO HEAVY CHEESE

Just five days after landing on French shores, the torch heads up the Alpine mountain pass of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc for Olympic Day on June 23 .

The Haute-Savoie region is known for its outstanding Chamonix ski resort, which hosts World Cup races, for sweeping views across glacier fields to nearby Italy, and — some would say more importantly — as a producer of fine cheese .

A Cheese Olympics, should it be invented, would feature a sturdy crew of eight competitors from Savoie: Abondance, Beaufort, Chevrotin, Emmental, Reblochon, Tome, Tomme and the heavy-duty Raclette.

HEADING FOR PARIS

After leaving fromage-friendly Savoie, torch bearers will digest in the Doubs region of eastern France, and then visit the Alsace city of Strasbourg in the northeast.

Three days later the torch will reach Verdun, the site of one of the most horrific battles of World War I . From February to December 1916, more than 700,000 French and German soldiers were killed or wounded at the Battle of Verdun .

BASTILLE DAY ARRIVAL

The torch is to arrive on the streets of Paris on July 14 — hardly surprising, considering it’s Bastille Day, France’s national day.

The torch will stay the following day in Paris, then exit again before snaking back to the French capital via Versailles — home to the resplendent Royal Palace — and the suburbs of Nanterre on July 24 and Seine Saint-Denis on July 25.

From there, it’s to travel a very short distance back to Paris on July 26 for the grandiose opening ceremony where athletes will parade on more than 80 boats at sunset on the Seine River.

FINAL DESTINATION?

After the nearly four-hour ceremony ends shortly after 11 p.m., the cauldron will be lit at a location that is being kept top-secret until the day itself. Among reported options are such iconic spots as the Eiffel Tower and the Tuileries Gardens outside the Louvre Museum.

FLAME PROTECTION

A total of 10,000 people will carry the torch along its route. Local police forces on each section of the relay will help to ensure security is high, providing a security bubble around the torch and its carrier.

ECO-FRIENDLY

The torches have a lower environmental impact than those used at previous Games. They burn biogas instead of propane and are recharged when fuel runs out.

Around 2,000 torches will be used compared to more than 10,000 before, according to Georgina Grenon, the director of environmental excellence at Paris 2024. The torches are made with recycled steel and not new aluminum.
