The Douglas Channel

British Columbia is renowned for its mesmerizing landscape, biodiversity, and wildlife. The Douglas Channel, nestled in the central coast of BC, is one of the most unique and diverse ecosystems of the province. From lush forests to rugged mountains to waters teeming with life, the Douglas Channel presents a rare sight for anyone who values nature and its tranquil beauty.

The region is also known for its abundant marine life, such as humpback whales, killer whales, dolphins, seals, and sea lions, making it a hub for eco-tourism and research purposes. Unfortunately, the Douglas Channel is under threats from various human activities, and a comprehensive solution is needed to protect this valuable natural resource.

History of the Douglas Channel

douglas channel tours

Without counting smaller side-inlets, the total waterway length of the fjord dominated by Douglas Channel is around 320 km, which makes it longer than Norway’s Sognefjord (203 km) and rivalling Greenland’s Scoresby Sound at 350 km.

The Douglas Channel has been home to Indigenous communities for thousands of years, and it holds great cultural and spiritual significance for them. The Indigenous communities that live there include the Gitga’at, Kitasoo/Xai’xais, Haisla, and Gitxaala Nations. They have been instrumental in advocating for the protection of species, traditional hunting practices, and the sustainable use of marine resources. As a result, the region has seen an increase in tourism centred around cultural practices and Indigenous heritage, supporting local economies and conserving the area’s cultural integrity.

Marven Robinson, a Gitga’at Guardian Watchman and Councillor for the Gitga’at First Nation, sits on the snow-covered ground as he attempts to film a group of wolves circling him.

Aside from Indigenous communities, there are also various non-Indigenous settlements along the coast that heavily rely on the Douglas Channel for their livelihoods. These include fishing villages, logging towns, and tourism-based communities. The natural resources found in the region provide employment opportunities and support local economies. The well-being and sustainability of these coastal communities are intricately tied to the health of the Douglas Channel.

However, industrialization has led to increased ship traffic, threatening the waters and delicate ecosystem of the Douglas Channel. The region has also been a focus for LNG development, further intensifying concerns about its protection.

The Magnificent Fauna of the Douglas Channel

A pof of orcas frolicking in the water

The Douglas Channel is home to a diversity of unique species, making it an essential habitat for the biodiversity of British Columbia. The region provides critical feeding and breeding grounds for various marine mammals, fish, and birds.

Some of the marine animals found in the Douglas Channel include humpback whales, killer whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, Dall’s porpoises, Steller sea lions, and harbour seals. The region is also home to a diverse range of seabirds, such as bald eagles, tufted puffins, and marbled murrelets.

douglas channel tours

In recent years, the Channel has witnessed a dramatic recovery in pods. One study found that the humpback whale population in this region doubled from 67 in 2004 to 137 in 2011. Latest estimates from BC Whales in 2019 put the number of individual humpbacks identified in the Caamano Sound to Douglas Channel region at 426. One key factor that has contributed to this is government regulation on whaling that started in 1966. But it’s not the only reason. Researchers postulate that krill and juvenile herring are schooling in the upper Douglas Channel, attracting more whales.

Nevertheless, several species found in the Douglas Channel are still listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern, including the southern resident killer whales and humpback whales. While the whale population has grown, the risks they face are also increasing. Whaling may have stopped, but other human activities, such as pollution, overfishing, and disturbance from vessels are on the rise. Protecting the Douglas Channel is vital for the protection of these species and for maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem.

Flora of the Douglas Channel

The Douglas Channel is not only home to magnificent fauna but also boasts a diverse array of flora. The region’s temperate rainforest is characterized by towering trees, such as western red cedar, sitka spruce, and western hemlock. These old-growth forests provide important habitat for wildlife and play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. The region also includes intertidal and subtidal habitats, which support a variety of marine plant life, including kelp forests and eelgrass beds.

douglas channel tours

In addition to providing food and shelter for wildlife, the flora of the Douglas Channel is culturally significant to Indigenous communities. Many plants are used for traditional medicine, weaving, and spiritual ceremonies. Protecting these diverse plant species is crucial for preserving Indigenous cultural practices and maintaining the region’s ecological balance.

Potential Threats to the Douglas Channel

Despite the cultural and ecological significance of the Douglas Channel, there has been a rise in activities potentially harmful to the region’s ecosystem. The construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, pipelines, and other industrial activities poses significant threats to the area’s biodiversity and marine life. These activities can lead to spills, noise pollution, habitat modification, and interruptions of migratory pathways which can cause negative impacts on the region’s natural resources. The impacts can be far-reaching, from affecting the ecosystem to communities that rely on these resources for their livelihoods.

The LNG facility in Kitimat, BC, under construction.

However, the most pressing threat is the increase of ship traffic. A recent study published in Endangered Species Research highlights the alarming impact of increased shipping traffic related to the LNG export terminal in Kitimat. This $38 billion project, set to open in 2025, will escalate shipping in the lower Kitimat Fjord System, dramatically increasing the risk of fatal collisions between ships and the recovering populations of fin and humpback whales.

The humpback whale known as Moon shown here with her crooked spine after being hit by a boat.

The study forecasts a potential thirtyfold increase in whale fatalities by 2030. These estimates were informed by data that was collected by the SWAG (Ships, Whales, & Acoustics in Gitga’at Territory) Project, which was collaboratively developed by the Gitga’at Nation, North Coast Cetacean Society, and WWF Canada. The potential number of deaths due to ship strikes could rise to two fin whales and 18 humpback whales annually, a stark contrast to the current rates. This increase could reverse the recent recovery of these species, which are listed as “Threatened” and “Special Concern” under Canada’s Species At Risk Act.

A dead whale's body stuck to the front of a ship after the whale was hit by said ship.

In addition to the impending threat from LNG-related shipping, the area has already witnessed a high number of whale strikes. Recent incidents involving various vessels have highlighted the vulnerability of these marine giants, particularly humpbacks, which lack the biosonar capabilities of orcas and are often unaware of nearby ships.

The study advocates for immediate action to mitigate these risks. Proposed measures include seasonal restrictions on shipping during peak whale months and the implementation of slowdown zones to reduce vessel speeds, which could significantly decrease fatal whale strikes. The project is also expected to contribute significantly to carbon emissions, further intensifying environmental concerns.

A humpback whale with its fin emerging out of the water - the fin has a deep gash across it after the whale was struck by a boat.

Another threat to whale populations is noise pollution , which can significantly disrupt their communication, behaviour, and health. It interferes with their vital acoustic signals, leading to communication breakdowns and altered social interactions. Chronic noise exposure induces stress, potentially causing behavioural changes like altered feeding and migration patterns, and can even lead to hearing loss. Additionally, noise pollution impacts prey species, further challenging whale survival.

Without effective and prompt intervention, the study warns of “unsustainable losses” to the fragile recovery of these magnificent creatures. The call for action is clear: it is crucial for industry and communities to heed these warnings and implement protective measures to safeguard the delicate balance of life in the Douglas Channel.

Defending the Douglas Channel

Active involvement of Indigenous communities, environmental groups, and policy-makers is necessary to ensure the region’s biodiversity and cultural values are preserved. There’s a need for the establishment of marine protected areas, proper monitoring, and surveillance of activities that threaten the region’s integrity.

Kitimat village

The Douglas Channel presents a rare and valuable natural resource that requires sustainable protection. The region’s biodiversity and cultural heritage embody the essence of British Columbia and play an important role in the province’s economy. Through innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, we can achieve a healthy and resilient Douglas Channel that can continue to be a thriving economic engine for current and future generations. Establishing the Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area Network is an important component of making this happen.

Testimonials.

Took my family out in Sept. 2023 with Dustin. Had a blast! Successful full day of fishing multiple species. Dustin is very knowledgeable and professional. Amazing day!

Dustin took us on a hotspring and crabbing charter early in the season and it was an absolute blast. Very professional and we got a pretty decent haul! I look forward to booking again during Salmon season.

I had an absolute blast, Dustin knows his boat and the area. We caught the best tasting fish I've ever had and seen some of the coolest stuff nature has to offer. Thank you so much Dustin you made my first trip to BC a very memorable one. I can't wait to see you next year, I'm running out of halibut.

Enjoyed a 3 Day Charter with Dustin. Absolutely incredible fishing trip. This was my 2nd year fishing with DC Charters and both trips were a huge sucess! Your arms will be sore from all the fish! We caught our limits of Halibut, Salmon and Lingcod. Very knowledgeable and friendly atmosphere on board. Book your next fishing trip with DC Charters, you wont be disappointed!!

Well, our second trip this season with Dustin at DC Fish Charters is one for the books. We didn’t think it was possible to top the last trip but Dustin never failed to raise the bar. We had the opportunity to stay 2 nights out on the water, anchored in a secluded quiet bay right next to the fishing grounds in Dustin’s very comfortable King Fisher. All 3 mornings were filled with chaos and excitement when we ended up limiting out on Salmon while trying to cook breakfast. The high continued throughout the day as we switched to bottom fishing and caught a wide variety of fish alongside the targeted Halibut and Ling Cod. Overall it was another amazing experience and we already can’t wait to get back out on the water with Dustin next season!

Group of us had been planning a West Coast Father/Son Fishing trip for years and in July 2023 we finally made it happen. Had an amazing trip out of Prince Rupert with Dustin at DC Charters! 😁 Dustin was an awesome guide and a key part in making our trip such a memorable, fun adventure. He put us on fish all day, often having fish on 2 lines at a time, making for some good chaos and action on the big water! He even made time and set a couple traps and treated us to a fresh feast of prawns 🦐 one evening! Enjoyed Dustin’s interactions with us - his stories, humour and teachings. His boat is amazing - it’s clean, organized and his gear is top notch which all made for an experience we’ll remember. Dustin knows his fishing - he’s very professional, knowledgeable friendly and accommodating and it’s easy to see that he truly loves fishing 🎣 Highly recommend Dustin at DC Charters for everyone’s next fishing adventure! Thanks again Dustin!

July 26, we went fishing with DC Charters. The trip was excellent, from the time the hooks hit the water until we were limited out we had a fish on and sometimes even 4 at a time. The boat is excellent and top of the line gear makes a difference. Dustin is a great guy and knows how and where to fish. Top shelf, thanks again Dustin, we will book again!!

Amazing Day out of Rupert we limited out on Halibut, got a few Cod and had a great time bringing in the coho. Followed by a bbq in the calm of one of the channels watching the whales playing in the distance! Highly recommend, very knowledgeable and helpful to those of us who aren’t a seasoned fisherman. Can’t wait to book again for next season!

Highly recommend DC charters! We had a blast fishing with Dustin for two days. If your looking to go fishing in Rupert I would give DC charters a call. We will definitely be going back. Dustin's knowledge on fishing and his boat were top notch, one of the best charters in town.

We had an amazing trip with Dustin! Boat is perfectly organized and Dustin knows the right spots!

Dustin at DC Fish Charters went above and beyond catering to the exact style of fishing we were looking for. He was very knowledgeable and put us on 8 different species of fish on the first day. He is an outstanding Guide and all around genuine and friendly Captain. He blew our expectations out of the water. Thanks Dustin for the great experience, already looking forward to our next charter this summer!

Dustin is professional, friendly, and most importantly knows how to catch fish!

From the onset of booking the trip to boarding the ship she was friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating and a ton of fun! The food was amazing! We were a group of 6 and 2 of us are vegan. Angela went out of her way to source out and prepare 3 delicious meals as well as vegan snack options. The city was planned and built by the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) during the 1950s and is now an integral part of the Northwest Corridor connecting North America to the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Rim.

"Kitimat" in the Tsimshian language refers to the Haisla First Nation as the "People of the Snow". Before 1950 the Kitimat township was a small fishing village at the head of the Kitimat Arm of the Douglas Channel, a deepwater fjord.

The municipal town of Kitimat came into existence in 1951 after the Provincial Government of British Columbia invited Alcan to develop hydroelectric facilities to support the aluminum smelting industry. The company built a dam, tunnel, powerhouse, transmission line, a deep-sea terminal, and smelter. The company also designed, laid out and assisted with the initial construction of the city. At the time, the combined development was considered "the most expensive project ever attempted by private industry."

Alcan employed the services of city planner Clarence Stein in order to ensure the community design facilitated an environment that would attract and retain workers, although Alcan intended it to not be a company town. Today, Kitimat benefits from the quality of planning resulting from the Garden City design concept. Stein's design kept industry well separated from the community with large areas for expansion. He also created looped streets surrounding an urban city centre mall and linked by over 45 km (28 mi) of walkways connecting to all areas of the community.

The only access by car is a by taking Highway 37 from Terrace , which is about a 40-minute drive.

Finlayson Channel to Douglas Channel: The Inside Passage continues across Mathieson Channel, through Perceval Narrows and into Finlayson Channel. The next supply centre is Klemtu where you can stock up on gasoline, diesel fuel, lubricants, and water. Klemtu has a store, cafe and post office. Mary Cove across the channel from Klemtu offers some protection and anchorage for small crafts. Make your way up Tolmie Channel, Graham Reach and Fraser Reach, where the north coast main land is on one side and Prince Royal Island on the other. This is a pleasant area with many waterfalls cascading into the deep waters. Both reaches are straight and wide, meeting cruise ships and other large vessels is an everyday occurrence in this region. Butedale in Fraser Reach offers protection and anchorage. This once thriving cannery has fuel and primitive dorm camping. When you reach Angler Cove, you can take Ursula Channel, Devastation Channel or Sue Channel into Douglas Channel. Continue going north and by-pass Douglas Channel, by way of McKay Reach, Wright Sound and into Grenville Channel. Douglas Channel: The side trip into Douglas Channel is well worth your time. Soak in the hot springs and visit the city of Kitimat at the head of the channel. The Gardner Canal that branches from the Douglas Channel leads to Kitlope and the Kitlope Valley. Enjoy the tranquility of the Kitlope Valley and the Haisla People. This protected valley is known as the world's largest undeveloped coastal temperate rain forest. In Ursula Channel, are Bishop Bay and the Hot Springs. This is a very popular stopping spot and the wear and tear on the environment is showing. Weewanie Hot Springs, in Devastation Channel are not as developed as Bishop Hot Springs, but a great place with moorage at the two buoys in the cove. Coghlan Anchorage, between Douglas Channel and Wright Channel is well used by pleasure crafts and fishing boats. Grenville Channel: This 72 km (45 mi.) channel looks like the classic fjord It is narrow and the snow-covered mountains seem to start in the water and reach for the sky. To see waterfalls cascading for hundreds of feet down the mountains is a sight you will never forget. Grenville Channel can become crowded with ferry boats, cruise ships, fishing boats and pleasure crafts, always be alert and careful. Many places in Grenville Sound have sheltered anchorage. Popular with most pleasure boaters is Lowe Inlet and Nettle Basin. This is a pleasant place to spend time and stretch your sea legs. Hike to Lowe Lake and photo opportunities of Verney Falls at low tide. Next is East Inlet, with plenty of room and protection for small pleasure crafts. Kumealon Island and Kumealon Inlet offer good anchorage with shelter from the chop and winds. To avoid the waters flowing in from the Skeena River , take Arthur Passage where Lawson Harbour and Kelp Passage provide anchorage. Approaching Chatham Sound, waters can become choppy, due to the Skeena River, preplan your trip before crossing this stretch of open water. Chatham Sound and Prince Rupert: The currents can be strong and waters choppy in Chatham Sound . If uncertain about crossing the sound, call the Prince Rupert Coast Guard for weather conditions. Should there be any reservations about nasty conditions turn back and find temporary shelter. The city of Prince Rupert , on Kaien Island, has the third deepest natural harbour in the world and is BC's northern port for the exporting of grain, coal, lumber, pulp, minerals and fish. Prince Rupert is served by air, road and rail and has facilities for all types of pleasure and commercial crafts. This is your first port of entry heading south from Alaska and Canadian Customs is open twenty-four hours a day for clearance. There are two moorage facilities, one is the Prince Rupert Rowing and Yacht Club in Cow Bay, the other is the public floats at Rushbrooke. Spend a few days here by taking in the sights and learning about the history and culture of the area. Visit the Museum of Northern British Columbia and the Mariners Memorial Park both are very interesting and entertaining. Stock up on necessary groceries, fuel, water and boat parts. Enjoy eating out and take in the night life that makes Prince Rupert a special place to visit. North to Alaska: Portland Canal, north of Prince Rupert, serves as the border between Canada and the United States. If heading north beyond this point, non US residents must have permission to stop or anchor in US waters. The distance between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan is 137 km (85 mi.) and can be a hard trip to make in one day, telephone Ketchikan Customers for permission to make anchorage along the way. Pleasure crafts reentering Chatham Sound often do so by way of Metlakatla Passage (Venn Passage). Near or ahead of high water out of Prince Rupert means favourable current to Green Island. On the island is an important weather station you should monitor when crossing Dixon Entrance. Whether heading north or south Brundige Inlet on Dundas Island offers needed protection and good anchorage. Take care when crossing Dixon Entrance, it is open water that can be nasty and demanding. Monitor both US and Canadian weather forecasts and depart early in the morning. This is American water. Portland Inlet and Portland Canal (Stewart and Hyder): A longer but more scenic and a smoother route is to stay close to the mainland coast where the coves, bays and inlet offer shelter and anchorage. You might want to put in at Pearl Harbour or Port Simpson before crossing Portland Inlet and into Tongass Passage. Cruising up the Portland Inlet takes you by the Nass River entrance, into Observatory Inlet, up Alice Arms and into Hastings Arm. Along the way there are spots that offer shelter and good anchorage such as Kumeon Bay and Somerville Bay. Khutzeymateen Inlet is very scenic and deep. This area is home to the largest concentration of grizzly bears along the BC coast and is a designated sanctuary. To view the bears, you must take an authorized guide service. At the mouth of the Nass River is Kincolith, Mill Bay, Iceberg Bay, Nass Harbour and Echo Cove, where there is limited anchorage and protection from Portland Inlet. Observatory Inlet takes you to Eagle Cove, Perry Cove, Alice Arm Settlement, Hastings Arm and the abandoned mining community of Anyox.

Portland Canal: This is a long and narrow canal that goes to Stewart BC and Hyder Alaska. The sides are steep and rugged. Places to stop and enjoy as you head into Portland Canal are Whiskey Bay, Reef Island, Halibut Bay, Maple Bay, Hideaway Lodge, Fords Cove, and Glacier Bay. Stewart is a small settlement that has a hospital, doctor, RCMP, a pharmacy, liquor store, post office, several stores and hotels, craft shops and airfield. Anchorage and mooring are available at the public wharf or at the Stewart Yacht Club. Hyder in Alaska has two floats. The settlement advertises itself as the friendliest ghost town in Alaska. Hyder connects to Stewart by road and a paved highway to Prince Rupert and Prince George . Portland Inlet and Portland Canal both have excellent fishing and crabbing. You are now in American waters and on your way to Ketchikan. Rest spots and sheltered anchorages along this route include Gilanta Rocks, Foggy Bay, Kah Shakes Cove, Bullhead Cove, Mary Island Anchorage, Ham Island Bight, Hassler Harbour and finally Ketchikan. The Inside Passage continues north from Ketchiakn to Wrangell, St. Petersburg, Juneau and onto Haines and Skagway. Exploring and cruising the Inside Passage takes time. It can be grueling and challenging, but an unforgettable experience. Be prepared for all types of weather and ocean conditions. The warm and sunny days offer scenery that is breath taking and unbelievable. When rain and fog set in, find a well-protected anchor spot and wait it out, not even bad weather lasts forever in this remote part of the world. Along the way, take time out to meet the locals and learn about their history and culture. Whether you make it all the way or only part of the way, always remember that safety comes first. Enjoy your Inside Passage cruise. Be safe, have fun! Queen Charlotte Islands: The Queen Charlotte Islands is a boating experience that can be challenging and rewarding. The I50 islands are an archipelago across Hecate Strait from the mainland of British Columbia. Queen Charlotte Islands have a very diverse ecosystem. One of the best remaining old-growth rain forests is here, and the islands have an extreme amount of sea birds, eagles and falcons. A cruise to Gwaii Haanas/South Moresby National Park Reserve offers exceptional scenery and quiet beauty that is mystical. Enjoy misty inlets, mountains with snow-covered peaks that reach for the sky, abandoned Haida village sites, and rugged wilderness. Hecate Strait: This strait separates Queen Charlotte Islands from the mainland. Never take the crossing lightly. The most direct route is from Browning Entrance. Monitor the weather forecasts and when seas are calm be prepared to leave early in the morning. Wait for favourable weather at Larsen Harbour or at Beaver Passage. Make sure your boat is sea worthy and you can be self sufficient when cruising the Queen Charlotte Islands. Graham Island: Skidegate is where BC Ferries dock and where there is a small public float and moorage facilities for pleasure crafts. Farther into Skidegate Inlet is Queen Charlotte City, the administrative hub for the Queen Charlottes. The town has needed facilities such as fuel, grocery supplies, post office, car rentals, RCMP Office, and guided tour services. Lina Island and Kanga Bay both offer sheltered anchorage. Gwaii Haanas/ South Moresby National Park: You must have permission to visit Gwaii Haanas. Boats and their crews must make reservations and complete an orientation course in Queen Charlotte City before cruising this section. After leaving Skidegate Inlet, Beattie Anchorage on Louise Island in Cumshewa Inlet offers safe anchorage. Gordon Cove has a public mooring buoy and float. Trotter Bay and Cecil Cove have some protected anchoring. Your last spot for emergency communications and transportation connection is Pacofi Bay, and Thurston Harbour has excellent public buoys that offer good safe anchorage. You are now cruising in Gwaii Haanas/ South Moresby National Park. Find protection and good anchorage on Moresby Island at places such as Crescent Inlet, Anna Inlet and Echo Harbour. Stock up on fresh water at Hoya Passage Cove. Tie to a float and stay overnight or for a couple of days. A very interesting and enjoyable place to visit is Hotspring Island. Anchor your craft between Hotspring and House Islands or at Ramsay Passage Cove. Haswell Bay is sheltered from all weather and by cruising deep into the bay, anchorage is excellent. Heading south along South Moresby there is anchorage and protection at Hutton Island Cove, Matheson Inlet, Section Cove, Skaat Harbour, Bag Harbour, Slim Inlet, and Jedway Bay. Continue your boating trip by way of Houston Stewart Channel, which is the protected route between Moresby and Kunghit Islands. Protected Rose Harbour is a good place to stay when visiting Anthony Island. Anthony Island and Ninstints (Sgan Gwaii): The creme de la creme for boating this part of British Columbia is Anthony Island (Sgan Gwaii) and the abandoned Ninstints village. UNESCO has designated this a World Heritage Site. When visiting here, walk carefully, stay on the paths, do not touch or remove any items from this site. Anthony Island Cove has room for a few small crafts on the east shoreline and more anchorage room is available in the northeast corner of the bight. Enjoy boating in British Columbia. Be safe, have fun!
