Cycle Around Brisbane in Style And Comfort
Cycling is a fantastic way to see the sights of Brisbane. And now you can do it in more comfort on an electric bike. Whether you’re after a relaxing tour around Brisbane City or a more challenging ride to catch the stunning views at the top of Mt Coot-tha or want to experience our wonderful rail trail network further afield – we have quality ebikes for hire for all types of riders.
Really happy with the ebikes we hired and the service provided by eBike Hire Brisbane. We wanted to test the ebikes out for a week to see if we liked using them. We did and my wife and I are now the proud owners of a pair of BH Emotions. Thanks guys!
I was without a car for a few days and really glad I heard about your ebike hire service. Bus wasn’t an option for me and I thought I was going to have to hire a car or catch taxis. You saved me a lot of money.
I had some overseas visitors and I wanted a fun way to show them around Brisbane. We had a blast and even made it up Mt Coot-tha. Thanks eBike Hire Brisbane. I would definitely do this again.
I had a few hours to kill after a business meeting in Brisbane, before my flight home so I hired an electric bike. I had a blast exploring around South Bank and Kangaroo Point. Electric bikes are really fun to ride and I covered quite a bit of ground in a short time. Thanks for the ride guys.
Our store is conveniently located in Milton just minutes away from the popular Bicentennial Bikeway. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here to answer your questions and help you with your e-bike hire.
My first e-bike challenge - Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane
By Bruce Robertson
Cycle Tours Global
A gorgeous spring morning heralded an auspicious start to my e-bike experience. I had heard amazing things about these uniquely Australian-built e-bikes and the upcoming soft launch of the AVE brand – exciting stuff.
However I won’t attempt to review the bike I rode as: I’d never been on an e-bike before so had no benchmark and I don’t know much about the technical side of bicycles - I just like to ride and experience the world on two wheels. What I can say is that my bike had a Bosch motor and a 500Wh battery. It was a much ridden demonstrator and forerunner to the production model SH11.
Ok, that’s my technical knowledge exhausted. I was given the choice of a leisurely ride alongside the Brisbane River or over the city’s highest point, Mt. Coot-tha. I thought I should put the e-bike to the test so opted for the latter – however as you will see I ended up doing both!
My companions were Nick Willis, of Electric Bikes Brisbane , and Gary Corbett, the e-bike cycle tourist who, together with his wife Rachel, holds the world e-bike touring record of over 27,000km (you can read about it on their blog ). Our starting point was the shop at Milton which was only a short distance from the amazing Brisbane Bicentennial Bikeway along the river. However we weren’t on there for long as we headed away from the river for a couple of kilometres to the Botanic Gardens, at the bottom of Mt Coot-tha.
So far it had been a breeze in the recommended ‘tour’ mode. The bike had four modes of pedal assist – eco, tour, sport and turbo. You still have to pedal to get the assistance but can choose the appropriate power level. It was very easier to master, as were the gears which were a variable shift twisting control – selecting a lower gear, as the climb got steeper, showed a pictograph of a bicycle going up an increasingly steeper hill!
The 7km climb up Mt Coot-tha is a very popular training ride for road cyclist among some very beautiful scenery. The TV signal is obviously very strong here too with all three of Australia’s commercial networks having imposing studios on the way up – as well as the distinctly lower budget studios of the public broadcaster ABC. I powered the bike up into sport mode for most of the climb but still had to pedal and work for it – however I wasn’t out of breath and could enjoy the eucalypt forest and uniquely Australian vegetation and scenery. At times I did choose the turbo mode just to see what it could do, and I sailed almost effortlessly past Nick and Gary.
The lookout at the top hadn’t changed much since I last visited almost 20 years ago but still had stunning views over the city and surroundings. We bumped into a former e-bike customer of Nick’s (also on an e-bike) who, as a self-confessed average and rather unfit rider, was delighted to have ridden to the top and she had done so without being unduly sweaty and exhausted.
At that point Nick had to leave for a business meeting so Gary and I rode back down to the river – no power assist needed on the way down so no battery used either. Back at the Bicentennial Bikeway we headed the other way to the leafy suburb of St. Lucia and the University of Queensland. I was chuffed to ride past the building I lived in all those years ago.
From the Uni there was a bus, bike and pedestrian bridge across the river (that wasn’t there in my day) which made the river route so much easier. No bike paths on that side but close to the river was mostly quiet roads, ironically getting quieter and more pleasant the closer we got to busy Southbank.
Most of the way along the river I switched down to eco mode as that was sufficient and was easier on the battery which by this stage was down to three bars (from five). Finding our way was pretty easy although signs in a couple of spots would have helped (e.g. leaving the bikepath to Southbank). There was a bit of a buzz in the air at Southbank where we stopped at a café under the ABC’s city studios – the Queensland state election was on that day. It was still sunny and warm making Southbank a great place to hang out and enjoy the greenery, open spaces and even a man-made city beach – all the while seeing the busy city centre (and ugly expressway) across the river.
There was a shared path along the river here so we continued on to, and crossed, the Goodwill Bridge which is a pedestrian/bike bridge. Back on the main city side we re-joined the Bicentennial Bikeway and by the time we were back at Milton we’d probably done about 45km (I missed the first few kilometres on Strava). The battery was now down to two bars – although my earlier testing wouldn’t have helped battery usage. Gary said on their e-bike tour they often achieved up to and even over 100km in one day – albeit with trailers in tow and spare batteries on hand.
I had ridden the Brisbane riverside before and enjoyed it just as much this time. But would it have been so pleasant after having slogged over Mt Coot-tha without power assistance? Almost certainly not. This was only a half day tour, so a full day, or several days, riding would most likely not be too taxing and exhausting while still giving a reasonable workout so you can tuck guilt-free (well, mostly) into the local cuisine!
Would I switch from a non-powered bike for touring? No, as I’m lucky enough to not need the assistance, although if the time and terrain called for it, I’d certainly ride an e-bike. I saw many people of all shapes and sizes on e-bikes (usually passing me) on my Lake Constance tour last year so it’s great that e-bikes are introducing so many people to the wonderful world of exploring the world on two wheels.

Tour/Bike Hire Damage
I, Ben Forbes am fortunately a professional bicycle mechanic so in most situations there will be no labour charges and I have a partnership with Kenmore Cycles for much lower prices on parts. In the unfortunate case of a rental bike sustaining damage, I will access and quote the damage as cheap as it will cost me and email an invoice for the damages to be paid for.
Wording from policy which is signed at time of booking
1) I accept full responsibility for all equipment hired by myself, partner, third party or child if (under the age of 18 years) and agree to pay for any equipment damage incurred during my hire period and agree to damage costs being withheld from rental bond to cover repair costs.

Rail Trail Rides Close to Brisbane
If you live in South-East Queensland there are a surprising number of rail trail rides within a few hours drive of Brisbane.
Some are short’ish day and weekender trips. Some are longer, offering top multi-day riding holiday options, particularly if you link up with country roads and state forest trails. There are also some exciting rail trail projects in the pipeline which will offer even more choice.
Here is a list of rides close to Brisbane. For inspiration :)
What are Rail Trails?
Rail trails are shared-use paths from abandoned railway corridors that are now being used for horse riding, running, walking, and, of course, cycling.
Free from cars and busy traffic they are excellent, easy-riding trails that help us explore some of our history and enjoy our beautiful countryside safely and peacefully.
Plus they are helping breathe new life into the small country towns and rural communities they link up by providing cyclists like us with safe and interesting riding destinations.
With a rail trail you can expect graded gravel and dirt surfaces most of the way, and some have paved sections too.
On occasion you might need to cross through creeks or embankments and take side roads. Just to add a bit of adventure to the day!
On the whole though these are great trails for everyone - from beginner to experienced riders, and are suitable for many types of bikes.
Our list of rail trail rides close to us in South-East Queensland is grouped as follows:
- The classics – long sections of trail that have helped pave the way for the rail trail movement. Perfect for a multi-day tour or just choose sections for a day or weekend ride
- Shorter rides to ease you into it, or that can be linked up with local roads and other trails for longer riding routes
We also take a peak at some exciting new projects in the pipeline.
Classic Rail Trail rides close to Brisbane
Brisbane valley rail trail.
Length km: 161km Distance from Brisbane: Approx 1 hour drive Start / End Locations: Wulkuraka (Ipswich) to Yarraman Trail Type: Compacted Earth, Coarse Gravel, Fine Gravel, Sealed Attractions and Support Services:
- Old Church Gallery Moore
- Esk Caravan Park
- Out there Cycling
- Tour de Vines
- Outbike Australia
- Blackbutt Bakery
- Linville Hotel
- Roy Emerson Museum
- and many more...
The BVRT is currently the longest section of rail trail in Queensland. You can ride it end to end over a few days or there are some popular sections often done over a day ride or with an overnight stop.
The first 23km leg is from Ipswich to Fernvale and has minimal facilities. However the Fernvale to Lowood leg has ample, including a visitor information centre, bakeries, cafes, ATM, filtered water, toilets, and accommodation.
Riding from Lowood to Esk will pass through native bushlands, so there will be limited support facilities. This leg will pass through the town of Coominya.
While there is no potable water available in town, bikers can purchase supplies from the supermarket or the pub. The station park has toilet facilities, and the Bellevue Hotel can offer accommodations.
Esk to Toogoolawah will take bikers through farmland with a few facilities and undulating trails. Toogoolawah to Moore will shift to a gravel surface, and Moore has several places to go eat, along with a B&B.
From Moore, the next stop will be Blackbutt that offers cafes, supermarkets, and a visitor information centre. The Old Country Style pub offers accommodation, as do several B&Bs along the trail.
Yarraman, which is the end of the line, offers two pubs, two motels, a caravan park, and a bakery.
If you are keen on riding the next trail then its just a 45-minute drive from this location to Kingaroy, the start of the South Burnett Rail Trail.
Alternatively, if you want to keep riding, there is a fantastic 55km link road which rolls along quiet back roads and quite a rugged stock route.
For more information on the trail and support resources including accommodation and shuttling see the BVRT website.
Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail
Length km: 89km Distance from Brisbane : Approx 3 hour drive Start / End Locations: Kilkivan to Kingaroy Trail Type: Coarse Gravel, Fine Gravel, Sealed
This is another long trail that can be done over 1-2 days or in a day. The first half (Kingaroy – Murgon) is 44km and known as the South Burnett Rail Trail. This is mainly paved surface and suitable for just about all types of bikes.
The next section to Kilkivan if rougher though and will be better if riding an all-terrain or mountain / trail bike.
If you are really adventurous (and ok with country roads) you can continue riding through Kilkivan to Gympie, where you can pick up a train back to Brisbane!
Most of the towns the trail passes through have good facilities and interesting historical facts. Goomeri, Murgon, Wondai, and Kingaroy all have visitor information centres and BNB accommodation is readily available, with camping also available in Wooroolin, Tingora, Goomeri, and Wondai.
If you want some ideas, here is the South Burnett Rail Trail route that Bill and Lesley rode on a weekend away: Murgon to Kingaroy
Day or Overnight Trips
Rail trails need not necessarily be that long to enjoy. Here are some shorter routes that offer a great day trip or overnight trip for you and your bike.
Mary to Bay (Fraser Coast) Rail Trail
Length km: 18km Distance from Brisbane: Approx 3 hours drive Start / End Locations: Maryborough to Hervey Bay Trail Type: Fine Gravel, Sealed
Caboolture to Wamuran Rail Trail
Length km: 10.5km Distance from Brisbane : Approx 1 hour drive Start / End Locations: Caboolture to Wamuran Trail Type: Sealed
Fassifern Rail Trail
Length km: 6km Distance from Brisbane: Approc 1.5 hour drive Start / End Locations: Boonah Visitor Information Centre to a Return Loop Trail Type: Coarse Gravel
Something to Look Forward to
There is currently a proposal to open the Northern Rivers Rail Trail , which will connect Murwillumbah, Byron Bay, Bangalow, Lismore, and Casino. When completed, the trail will span for 128km, and will take bikers through some beautiful scenic northern New South Wales countryside. ( More info here )
Construction on the Tweed Valley section of the Rail Trail is almost complete with this 23 km section from Murwillumbah opening in early 2023.

Between Wulkuraka and Yarraman in southern Queensland is the remnants of the Brisbane Valley rail line, constructed over 29 years between 1884 and 1913. The steam locomotives have long gone, replaced by cyclists following the same path. The conversion of the rail line to a cycle trail took a little less time, about 11 years with completion in 2018, only possible through the dedication and hard work of locals keen to showcase this special region of Australia. At 161km in length, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) qualifies as the longest rail trail in the country. Our cycle tour starts at the top of the range, giving you an easy start downhill to the plains of the Brisbane Valley and back to Wulkuraka over three days. The cycling is on mixed surfaces of gravel, dirt and asphalt and is achievable for anyone of reasonable fitness and cycling ability. Along the route you'll pass through prime agricultural land, a rugged mountain range and forests of Blackbutt, Hoop Pine and Cedar. Stops at historical townships with good coffee and bakery treats, interesting museums and friendly pubs are all part of the BVRT experience. At night, stay in comfortable accommodation and soak up the atmosphere of country Queensland towns. With all your logistics taken care of including transfers, bike hire, luggage transfers and accommodation bookings, all you need to do is enjoy the cycle day and take in the expansive scenery of this truly outstanding route.

The 'magic' of Brisbane extends beyond the footy field
By Liam O'Loughlin | 8 hours ago
NRL's Magic Round, one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar, is something that brings fans from across Australia and New Zealand into the city of Brisbane for eight games of footy across three-action packed days.
The showcase event, which started in 2019, has been an overwhelming success for the NRL and at the same time, has also helped build Brisbane's reputation as a tourist hotspot.
Rugby league fanatics are quite often simple in their approach to this type of weekend – watch the footy, drink a few beers and head to the world-renowned Caxton Street.

It's the best place in the world to be a rugby league fan, with pubs and restaurants located just a short walk from the stadium and the nightlife is always pumping.
But if you're planning on making the trip to Brisbane next year for Magic Round, why not make it a longer stay and explore the region.
Brisbane has some of the most vibrant hotels, from the state-of-the-art Emporium in Southbank, to the boujee and eco-friendly Crystalbrook Vincent at Howard Smith Wharves.
The latter is one of the great spots in the city to grab a bite to eat or catch up with friends for a few drinks at the wonderful and buzzing Felons Brewing Co, who boast a wide array of craft beers and seltzers and have been in business for over 75 years.

Located directly underneath the Story Bridge, the entertainment complex is home to one of the best Greek restaurants you will find in Greca, which overlooks the water and has a mix of traditional and modern meals to choose from. Their wildly-popular saganaki is a must!
Speaking of the city's famous Story Bridge – adrenaline junkies or tourists would be silly not to make the trip up to the top and overlook the city. It's not an overly strenuous climb by any means and even those with a fear of heights can be put at ease by the friendly guides.
For those who prefer to stay closer to sea level, a scenic kayak tour around the Brisbane River will take you directly under the bridge and all throughout the city.
The team at Riverlife – who also host rock climbing and abseiling activities – take you around the river as fast or slow as you like, pointing out all the nooks and crannies you might otherwise miss if you were hanging out in an Uber or your hotel room.
But for one of the best adventure experiences in the country, an hour-long ferry trip from Brisbane to Tangalooma Island Resort is the best possible way to spend a day - or longer.
From a scenic helicopter flight around the island to a fast-paced quad bike session, this place is truly phenomenal and has activities for travellers of all ages.
There's also the opportunity to feed wild dolphins every afternoon in a region that is famous for the ocean's most beloved creatures, as well as some lowkey and family-friendly bars, restaurants and accommodation on the island for those looking to unwind a little longer.
If action or adventure isn't your cup of tea, you can always relax and unwind at the magical Soak Bathhouse, located in the ever-growing West Village complex.
The venue has massage and infra-red sauna available to customers, as well as a high-quality outdoor spa setup that includes a plethora of 38-degree spas, a mineral bath, a cold plunge pool, steam room and sauna. Soak even gives you the perfect routine to get your body feeling on point, going through a full cycle of relaxation.
It's one of just two venues of its kind in Australia and could be the perfect remedy for footy fans to shake off the weekend at Magic Round and bounce into vacation mode.
Just a quick walk from Soak is one of the highest-quality steak restaurants you will find, Rich and Rare, which is affordable and offers a wide array of cuts for the meat lovers out there.
Another brilliant option for the foodies is in the south Brisbane area, right in the heart of Fish Lane - a modern inner city urban renewal precinct bustling with bars, restaurants, cafes, art, galleries, music and events.
One of those restaurants is Southside, which brings the best east Asian flavours to life and boasts some amazing dumplings and their must-try Sichuan fried chicken.
So if you're a rugby league fan planning on attending Magic Round in 2025 or beyond, don't just go for the weekend and be done with it – make the most of your time and get the full Brisbane experience.
The city has something for everyone and with so many pockets - each with its own flavour or individuality - there's no question a longer stay means you will get the best out of Brisbane.
