The 10 best cafés in Zurich

One of Kingly Court's many hidden gems, Disrepute celebrates its debaucherous history amid the swinging sixties. Cocktails with individual stories and a lengthy list of wines are all served promptly. You'll need to be a member to enter, but not in the formal sense - jsut download their app.

At Con Gusto, the pizza Napoletana is as it should be: an airy, soft, tasty dough, topped with the best ingredients. No wonder the small restaurant is considered one of the best addresses for Neapolitan pizza in Zurich and is always well attended.

Celia is a Zurich institution - not least because of the pizza served there until late in the evening. It comes out of the wood-fired oven, has a crispy, not too thin dough and is gladly customised to the guests' wishes. The restaurant is open daily.

Bar Le Hall is located in the impressive entrance hall of Zurich's luxury hotel Baur au Lac. This "living room of Zurich" serves fine coffee, a large selection of fine teas and selected dishes, in a special atmosphere all day long.

At Café Sprüngli, locals and tourists meet for coffee and cake, lunch or aperitifs. The quality of the house creations is known far beyond the city limits. At the same time, you can watch the hustle and bustle on the Paradeplatz.

This classic Italian restaurant has been around for almost 30 years; it is still very popular. If you want to enjoy the delicious wood-fired pizzas and authentic pasta dishes on weekends, you should definitely reserve a table.

The Arcade at the Wiedikon Train station is simply furnished, with nothing to distract from the quality of the pizza. Fortunately, this is high because it is prepared according to the Neapolitan model: a smooth dough with a thick edge, topped with the best Italian ingredients.

La Stanza is an Italian-style café - whether for an espresso at the bar, a cappuccino with brioche, lunch, aperitivo or digestivo, the smart dining room is busy all day. In summer, people try to get a table on the terrace.

Thanks to its location in an old industrial hall next to the railroad tracks, Rosso still looks cutting-edge even after more than ten years. The cuisine on the other hand is timeless; guests come mainly for the pizza from the wood-fired oven with crispy dough and excellent toppings.

The Grande is suitable for any time of day or night as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Centrally located, it serves excellent coffee, plus cakes, rolls and croissants. If you have no time to sit, the espresso is drunk at the bar.

Our Travel Report: A Coffee Tour of Zurich [Old Town & Münsterhof Square Areas]

' src=

Zurich does finance. And chocolate. And a pretty magical display of lights if you’re there around the holidays.

They also do some pretty decent coffee. Though, you may not find it where you’re expecting it.

If I were to sum up Zurich’s coffee scene in a single word, that word would be intimate.

We can’t tell you where to find the best coffee in Zurich, since taste is subjective, but we did visit several coffee shops in two areas of Zurich where many tourists will be spending some of their time – around Zurich’s Old Town and Münsterhof Square .

For the most part, we taste-tested the same standard espresso drink, a cappuccino, to compare.

And, since Zurich is the most expensive city in the world, we’ve also included prices.

Schwarzenbach Teecafé

european coffee trip zurich

Located on Münstergasse, a main thoroughfare through Zurich’s Old Town, Schwarzenbach Teecafé is part of the Schwarzenbach store that has been selling bulk foods, like dried fruit, coffee, and tea for over one hundred years.

It’s a beloved Zurich coffee shop.

The beans might be freshly roasted, but that didn’t make the espresso good. What we tasted was a cappuccino that was impressively strong, but terribly bitter.

It was nigh on undrinkable without sugar. Luckily, it was served with water, which was desperately needed to cleanse our palates.

We got this cute little chocolate treat. The pastry name wasn’t on the case, so I don’t know what to call it.

It was a little cup of a thing – the tiniest treat they had – and incredibly rich, but super tasty. Better than its coffee counterpart for sure.

The Ambiance

european coffee trip zurich

Though it’s situated on a tourist street, this place is undeniably a local. The tables were full of people reading or lingering to chat.

There are four main seating areas with bench-style seating, so unless you’re a large party (and if you are, plan to wait quite some time seats), you’ll almost certainly be sharing a section with strangers.

Which isn’t a bad thing.

The décor is nice. Very charming.

One (teensy) cappuccino + one mini chocolate treat = 8.60 CHF

The exchange rate was just about even while we were there, so all these prices are pretty close to what they would have been in USD.

  • Cute local décor
  • That chocolate treat was pretty scrumptious

Rathaus Café

european coffee trip zurich

For us, the cappuccino at Schwarzenbach Teecafé was so tongue-torturingly bitter, we still needed coffee when we left.

So, we hit Google maps and went straight to the Rathaus Café on the Limmat River. It was a great by-chance find.

european coffee trip zurich

Our cappuccinos came out big, hot, strong, but very, very smooth. Bit foamy, which is, you know, a cappuccino.

But these might have been a tad-touch too foamy, given the price – 6.50 CHF a piece – and the size of the mugs.

They had a very limited assortment of pastries. We didn’t order anything.

But the cappuccino was served with a simple butter cookie. Basic, but better than nothing.

Plus, that typical European cup of water alongside your dehydrating joe.

Of all the coffee shops we went to in Zurich, this one was, by far, the most charming.

It’s a coffee shop/bar with a lodge-like interior and an amazing view of the river.

european coffee trip zurich

There’s also plenty of outdoor seating if you’re not there in December or enjoy shivering like some crazies who arrived after us.

There were blankets on the backs of the outside chairs, though, so…

It was close to Christmas, and the fireplace channel played on the TV.

There was also music. Playing at a perfectly reasonable volume.

Or maybe it just seemed like it because it was in excellent taste. The guy working there clearly dug Creedence.

And he was a super nice guy. Friendly and playful and unobtrusive.

When I went up to pay, he took the coffees he was making out to the two crazies sitting outside in the thirty-something degree (F) temps before taking my money. And, having had my own coffee sit for several minutes on a counter before it was served to me, I thought this was a proper decision.

ViCAFE Rösterei & Espresso Bar

european coffee trip zurich

ViCAFE has one of the finest reputations for coffee in all of Zurich.  They roast their own beans, hence the Rösterei in their name.

Their Facebook page is full of love. It’s hard to find a bad review on the Internet.

Everyone loves them.

Everyone, apparently, but us.

We ordered a flat white since there were no cappuccinos listed on the hand-written menu. They could have made one, I’m certain.

And we probably should have asked. But in a city where espresso drinks cost upwards of 6.00 CHF for a small (which means VERY SMALL), one doesn’t just go blindly ordering.

As far as fruity espresso goes, this one wasn’t that bad. If you like a fruity espresso, it would probably be a real find.

The flat white was smooth, though. Not too strong. Not too bitter.

The aftertaste was a little rough. But, then, we don’t like fruity espresso.

It was also pretty chilly. I know flat whites aren’t supposed to be as hot as other espresso drinks (and I do like a hot drink), but we’ve had flat whites in Australia. They were warmer than this.

We read about ViCAFE online before we went there. (A lot of people think it’s one of the best espresso bars in the city, if you’re looking for varied opinions.)

Our research uncovered a fruity bread that people rave about. So, that’s what we wanted to try.

But we were there in the last half hour they were open, and they only had croissants left.

There were a few crumbs of fruity bread on a tray if any eager mice happened by.

There are six Zurich locations of ViCAFE. We went to the one in Münsterhof square .

The place is tiny. Teensy-teensy tiny. There is one shared seating section in the back and a few stools by the door. It’s not a place to relax.

Plenty of outside seating, though, that probably would have been lovely at any other time of year.

And this was almost certainly a random “just the wrong time” sort of thing, but it didn’t smell great in there. I won’t try to describe the smell – that seems like a bad idea – but it certainly didn’t smell like a coffee shop should.

1 Flat White = 4.50 CHF

But flat whites are supposed to be small – about 5.5 ounces. And this one was. Very, very small. Hardly a bargain.

  • For fruity espresso, it was drinkable

Café Presse Club

european coffee trip zurich

Since our visit to ViCAFE didn’t go as expected, we left hungry and still in need of an appropriate amount of coffee.

So, once again, we turned to Google Maps and hop-skipped the 150 feet to Zurich’s Café Presse Club, also in Münsterhof square .

We went a bit rogue when we got to Café Presse Club. There was a man sitting across from us with a fancy, whipped cream-topped concoction that was difficult to ignore.

So, we had what he was having. Well, one of us did.

Turned out the man was indulging in a chocolate café mélange. We ordered one chocolate café mélange and one straight-up café mélange.

The Café Melange

The coffee was strong in this one. Would it have been drinkable without that hulking dollop of whipped cream?

Probably not without a spot of sugar. But that whip was scrumdiddlyumptious and a heck of a palate pleaser.

Came for the coffee. Stayed for the cream.

Moral of the story: When having kaffee in Zurich, do as the locals do.

The Chocolate Café Melange

There was supposed to be coffee in this somewhere, but it was deeply hidden beneath the cocoa-y flavor and the mound of whipped cream. The chocolate was the star of this show.

But it was a darn fine (ultra-rich) hot chocolate.

When we were there (around 6:30 p.m.), there were also plenty of people having a glass of wine.

Plum pie doesn’t go with hot chocolate. Or coffee really.

Most fruit pie doesn’t go with coffee. Fruit pie and black tea, that’s a winning combination.

But plum pie was such a desirable offering – one we don’t see served up many places – that it was impossible to resist. We didn’t even try. And we were glad we didn’t.

This “pie” was pretty tasty. I put pie in quotes here because what a lot of European countries call pie is not what we’re used to calling pie. Yes, it’s filling in a crust, but that crust is really more cake-like than crust like.

It was good, though. And they didn’t skimp on the plums. Two and a half plums total. I can say that with authority, because the plums were just cut in half and there were five pieces.

european coffee trip zurich

Yet another Zurich cafe in a tourist hotspot that was filled with locals.

No one was on a device. Half the people were reading the newspapers and magazines on-hand or books they’d brought with them.

The waitress was friendly, there was plenty of seating (both indoors and out). It was relatively quiet.

The sort of place that just invited you to read and relax.

1 Café Melange + 1 Chocolate Café Melange + 1 Piece of Plum Pie = 21.80 CHF

  • The calm vibe

european coffee trip zurich

Location: Münsterhof 15, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland

Starbucks Zurich

I know. But there were an oddly limited number of coffee shops near our hotel. Starbucks was the closest.

Plus, it’s worth mentioning for comparison purposes. Because if you walk into a Zurich Starbucks thinking it’s gonna be about the same price as it is everywhere else in the world, you are in for some serious sticker shock.

The good news is our morning cappuccinos were good.

Like any coffee shop chain where the drinks are made by hand, Starbucks isn’t always consistent. This location was, though.

Our coffees were delightful every day.

No oatmeal. That’s common at Starbucks in Europe. They don’t even just call it porridge. They simply don’t have it.

That means it’s either a pastry or a breakfast sandwich. These pre-packaged foodstuffs are all right in a pinch, but there are other, realer breakfasts out there.

Think of any Starbucks you’ve ever been in. Now, transfer it to Zurich.

Do you know how to say “Yikes” in Swiss? Pretty sure it’s “6.95 CHF for a grande cappuccino.”

And that ain’t with any trimmings, folks. That is just straight-up two shots with steamed milk topped with foam.

However, our Starbucks grandes were twice as big as any of the other cappuccinos we got in the city, so it was actually the best value for the money.

2 cappuccinos = 13.90 CHF

  • Savings? Sort of?
  • Good baristas

Great Places For Coffee And Cake In Zürich, Switzerland

european coffee trip zurich

Zürich is home to some of the world’s best chocolate, and also some of the best coffee. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find great coffee houses here in which to enjoy them all throughout the city. We list the best places in Zurich to grab coffee or cake on your next trip.

Coffee

1. Kafi Dihei

Kafi Dihei ’s interior is full of antique furniture and lamps set among old-fashioned tapestry, all part of the owner’s attempt at making his customers feel at home. Kafi Dihei has recently been voted one of the best brunches in Zürich and its menu offers a great selection of local dishes. The cakes, as well as the bread, are homemade and the sandwiches and omelets are recommended. Eat in the small garden area in summer; an ideal setting for breakfast on a sunny morning.

Zurlindenstrasse 231, 8003 Zürich, Switzerland , +41 44 557 43 48

2. Café Sprüngli

Café sprüngli.

Café Sprüngli is a landmark place to buy sweet treats in Zurich. The company dates to 1836, and is especially renowned for its Luxemburgerli macaroon . The café is located on the Paradeplatz, a vast square lined with Swiss banks. Visitors can choose from a range of chocolates and cakes or enjoy a light lunch. The interior has been designed in a classic style, with a selection of colorful sweets greeting the customer on well-lit, polished shelves.

3. Café Peclard

Café peclard.

Café Peclard is part of the Conditorei Schober and renowned for its sweet treats, coffees and teas. Entering the café feels like a step back in time; generations of families have come here to indulge in the wonderful sweet treats. The homemade pastries and cakes are unsurprisingly outstanding. The café itself charms the visitor through its high Baroque ceilings and enchanting features such as the old-fashioned cash register.

8. Café Chez Andy

Café Chez Andy

Café Chez Andy is a small, but cosy place with a charming garden area. It is one of the more secluded cafes in Zürich and an ideal retreat for an afternoon coffee and a book. The outside reminds the visitor of a building from a fairy tale, while in the warm interior the cafe serves an all-day breakfast, brunch (try the charcuterie and cheese plates) and a variety of baked and sweet goods. The homemade cakes fill the place with mouth-watering smells and contribute to the peaceful ambience.

10. Les gourmandises de Miyuko

Les gourmandises de miyuko.

This quirky mixture of tearoom and confectioners draws its influences from Japan ‘s popular anime culture. Inside the café, there is a light interior with pink accents, which contributes to Miyuko ’s cute atmosphere. The cakes are arguably the most beautifully decorated in the city and certainly taste just as sweet, with vegan, lactose and gluten-free options; wash down with one of a selection of authentic Japanese teas.

In recent years, the Zürich coffee scene has dramatically improved, with passionate coffee purveyors sourcing their own beans and roasting them locally. Below are the best specialty coffee shops in Zürich where you can try a wide variety of flavors and styles.

3. Stoll at COFFEE

4. miró manufactura de café, 5. café noir, 6. bean bank coffee & co, 8. rent-a-barista, 10. about coffee, honorable mention: collective bakery, map of zürich specialty coffee.

During our research, we tried a cappuccino at each one for a fair comparison and ended up with a few clear favorites. Your experience may vary depending on your preferences, the selected beans, and coffee drink of choice. So we encourage you to visit all of the shops to try new flavors and find the one you like the best.

Tip: Some of these coffee shops have multiple bean varieties but don’t list it on the menu. So if you want a particular flavor profile (fruity, nutty, etc), make sure to ask before ordering.

MAME was started by award winning baristas, who won the World Brewers Cup Champion 2018. True to their motto “The best coffee is the coffee you love,” the staff are great at helping you find a flavor you’ll love or something new to try.

Beside the coffee, our favorite part about MAME is the “Flavor Wheel” on the wall that displays different flavor profiles matched with currently available coffees.

european coffee trip zurich

They offer an espresso trio, where you try three different espressos. Or a coffee trio, where you have the same beans as espresso, cappuccino and filter coffee.

european coffee trip zurich

We usually go to their Seefeld location, which is a short walk from Stadelhofen. They have another location near the Markthalle am Viadukt. At both locations, the modern interior is welcoming and roomy, so you feel like your conversations are your own. They offer sweet and savory snacks, including croissants from John Baker.

MAME Seefeld: Seefeldstrasse 19, 8008 Zürich Mon – Fri 8:00 – 17:30  Sat – Sun 9:00 – 18:00

MAME Josef: Josefstrasse 160, 8005 Zürich Mon – Fri 8:30 – 18:00  Sat – Sun 9:00 – 18:00

Oat milk: Oatly

The owner of this little coffee shop comes from Indonesia, one of the biggest coffee producing countries. They serve excellent coffee with a personal touch, a real neighborhood feel. They source their single origin beans and have them roasted locally by Henauer to their specifications.

european coffee trip zurich

It’s mostly a takeaway business with a few pastries and treats to go along with your drink. But they have a small counter inside, if you prefer to drink out of a reusable mug (I do!). They offer barista classes for home enthusiasts and professionals.

european coffee trip zurich

Omnia is one of our very favorites on the list. We like to stop there before visiting the farmer’s market at Helvetiaplatz one block away.

Omnia Stauffacherstrasse 105, 8004 Zürich Mon-Fri 7:30 – 16:00 / Sat 9:00 – 16:00 / closed Sundays

www.omniacoffee.ch

From what I’ve read, COFFEE was started by the Stoll coffee company, whose beans are featured here. The menu board says which bean variety is being used as filter coffee and espresso drinks that day. They also have pour over coffee, which is meticulously done with a scale and timer.

european coffee trip zurich

During the week, they have croissants, a few cakes, and usually banana bread. According to their Instagram page , they do brunch on Saturdays – “all sides no meat.” They have indoor and outdoor seating, never crowded when I’ve been there.

european coffee trip zurich

Stoll beans are used and sold at many several cafes and bakeries around Zürich, including Echo Park, Babu’s Bakery , Bank , John Baker , Globus , and Buchmann .

Oat milk: Minor Figures

I read that the Swiss founder of miró was inspired by his time in Australia and wanted to offer Melbourne-style coffee here. He started with a coffee truck back in 2013. Now miró has a coffee shop in the Aussersihl neighborhood and a takeaway counter in the Zürich HB main train station. A few cafes around Zürich use miró beans including Nude Café and Monocle and also by SWISS airlines .

european coffee trip zurich

If I’m catching an early morning train at the Zürich HB, miró coffee is my first choice, delicious and conveniently located near the upper level tracks. If I need an excuse for a stroll, their Aussersihl cafe is a good excuse to explore a neighborhood you haven’t visited before.

european coffee trip zurich

We primarily come here for coffee, but they often have tempting treats that we can’t resist. Last time we had their lemon tart and pistachio cake, both delicous! They also serve Gar ç oa hot chocolate, which gives them extra points in my book.

european coffee trip zurich

You can purchase their beans in their shops and online. They also offer a subscription service, sending you their featured espresso or filter coffee on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.

miró Roastery, Café & Shop Brauerstrasse 58, 8004 Zürich Mo-Fr 8:00 – 18:00 / Sa 9:00 – 18:00 / Sun 9:00 – 17:00 mirocoffee.co

See coffee truck locations

Oat milk: Gutsch

Their primary business is their gourmet coffee roastery, near Binz in Zürich (next door to MAME’s roastery). The beans are sold online and in their tiny café, of the same name, near Langstrasse. Other cafes in the city service their coffee, including Kafi für Dich .

european coffee trip zurich

Their café is a happily relaxed locals place that surprises you with excellent coffee if you didn’t know where you were going. The barista was super friendly and told us lots about their coffee and process.

They usually have a featured bean, in addition to the “easy drinking” house blend, but it’s not listed on the menu. So ask if you’re interested (it was our favorite of that round!). They have assorted pastries and cakes and also serve Gar ç oa hot chocolate .

european coffee trip zurich

They also offer barista and roasting workshops.

Cafe Noir Neugasse 33, 8005 Zürich (short walk from Limmatplatz tram stop) Mo-Fr 7.00 – 21.00 / Sat 8:00 – 18:00 / closed Sundays cafe-noir.ch

This coffee shop prides themselves on curating a wise selection of specialty roasters worldwide and in Switzerland. In their café, you can try their house blend and a rotating guest espresso.

While my general policy is to start with the house blend, the friendly barista was so convincing that I tried the guest beans for my cappuccino and really enjoyed it.

european coffee trip zurich

It’s takeaway at both locations. But at Europaallee, they have benches outside the shop. If you plan to stay, let them know so they can give you a ceramic cup instead of disposable.

european coffee trip zurich

If you want to shop for beans and equipment, best to visit the Europaallee location, which has more stock. They also offer workshops.

european coffee trip zurich

Europaallee address: Lagerstrasse 18c, 8004 Zürich Mon-Fri 7.30 – 18:00 | Sat 9.30 – 17.30 | closed Sundays

Paradeplatz address: Bärengasse 29, 8001 Zürich Mon-Fri 8:00 – 15:00 | closed Sat & Sun

Vegan milk: Sproud Pea Milk

This coffee shop was born in Geneva in 2009 and now has two shops in Zürich. They work directly with coffee bean farmers to ensure both high quality product and ethical, sustainable practices.

european coffee trip zurich

Unlike the others on this list, their beans are roasted near Geneva and delivered regularly to their Zürich locations. Of course, you can also order their beans online.

european coffee trip zurich

We go their comfy cafe at Talacker near Paradeplatz, just a couple mins off the busy Bahnhofstrasse shopping street. The baristas are always friendly and chatty (in English).

european coffee trip zurich

Website: www.borealcoffee.ch

Zürich center Talacker 41, 8001 Zürich Mon-Fri 7:30 – 17:00 / Sat 9:00 – 18:00 / Sun 9:00 – 17:00

Oerlikon cafe Thurgauerstrasse 34, 8050 Zürich Mon-Fri 7:30 – 14:30 / Sat-Sun closed

Milk options: lactose free, skimmed oat, almond and hazelnut

Per the name, this business is focused on good equipment and excellent barista skills, renting out both for events. They have a small selection of specialty coffee beans sold online and in their shop. Per request, they offer workshops in barista basics, latte art and filter coffee.

european coffee trip zurich

You can enjoy their coffee at two Zürich cafés: Chez Nous in Wipkingen and Helvi Kafi near Stauffacher. We went to the later, which has a charming view of St Jacobs church from the outdoor tables (no indoor seating here). It has a friendly, relaxed vibe but definitely more of a takeaway place with steady stream of customers filing in and out. They don’t list the beans on the menu, which is a shame because they actually do have multiple beans on offer for espresso drinks if you know to ask.

european coffee trip zurich

Website: rentabarista.ch

Helvti Kafi at Stauffacher Kasernenstrasse 1 , 8004 Zürich Daily 7:00 – 17:00

Plant-based milks: Oatly , Sproud

ViCAFÉ is probably the most popular specialty coffee roaster in Zürich, with many takeaway espresso bars around the city. Their house blend is a crowd pleaser, but we like trying their other beans on occasion.

european coffee trip zurich

If you want to sit with your coffee, we suggest their Europaallee location at the Bridge food court, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. We suggest pairing it with a SERI croissant from the bakery counter. The prettiest location is at the Münsterhof, overlooking the Fraumünster cathedral, a nice place to enjoy an affogato in summer.

Despite the odd location in a little strip mall next to a grocery superstore, we were won over by quality coffee and stylish, roomy interior. I heard they use Henauer beans but roast it themselves on site to their preference.

european coffee trip zurich

They usually have a featured roast in addition to their house roast. I had the winter special, which was a little on the toasty side for me but still good. The café is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks and does a Saturday brunch once a month. I was also happy to see they serve Gar ç oa hot chocolate – well done!

european coffee trip zurich

Their extensive menu/encyclopedia includes a bio of every coffee they sell, menu of food and drinks for every time of day, and coffee cocktails if you’re starting your evening early. In the shop, you’ll find a wide variety of coffee equipment and accessories, which you can test with their professional guidance. They also host coffee workshops and events in their event space.

Oat milk: Dryk

Although their main business is fantastic baking, they bring that same passion to coffee, roasting their own beans in house. So you get the best of both worlds here. We like that their menu has a few creative coffee creations and delicious non-coffee drinks like their spicy latte.

european coffee trip zurich

I could talk more about the coffee, but the real reason to come here is all the yummy pastries that are coming out of the oven all day long. If you go on weekends, you have a chance to eat one of their seasonal treats like this cruffin filled with lemon cheesecake.

european coffee trip zurich

The only downside is their location, which is far outside the city center in a somewhat deserted commercial area. We make the trek out there every few weeks and are always glad we did. Since they don’t take reservations, come early for their popular weekend brunch .

european coffee trip zurich

Collective Bakery Förrlibuckstrasse 160 , 8005 Zürich (tram stop: Fischerweg) Mo-Fri 8:00 – 15:00 / Sa-Su 9:00-15:00 collectivebakery.ch

Note: If you drive, there’s no street parking but a parking garage right under the shop.

Did your favorite specialty coffee shop not make the list? Tell me all about it in the comments.

We’re also writing a post on cozy cafés around the city that also make great coffee. So maybe your favorite will be on the list.

How you could’ve forgotten about the best Oat Mylk Cappuccino in town is a mystery to me- Bro’s, Beans &Beats it is!

I didn’t include them because they are primarily a cafe, not a coffee shop. They also do not roast their own beans.

Great Coffee In Zürich

Best coffee in zürich.

My friend and I spent an afternoon at the Kunsthaus Zürich and sandwiched our visits with stops at two coffee shops.

Boréal Coffee Shop Talacker 41, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland 7:30 am – 5:00 pm (Tuesday – Thursday) 9:00 am – 5:00 pm* (Friday – Monday) *open until 6:00 pm on Saturday

The barista here was very friendly and we enjoyed a nice chat about coffee and travel. What prompted the travel element of the chat was a cool promotion next to the coffee bar: send a postcard to Boréal and enjoy a free coffee next visit:

a group of postcards on a white wall

I intend to do that!

I ordered a flat white and my friend had a mochaccino (a chocolate-flavored drink that is a variant of a caffè latte).

a black menu board on a wall

The coffee was excellent. Next time, I’d order orange juice and a croissant as well…

After a lovely visit to the art museum, we stopped for another coffee at MAME.

MAME Coffee Seefeldstrasse 19, 8008 Zürich, Switzerland 8:00 am – 5:30 pm (Monday – Friday) 9:00 am – 6:00 pm (Saturday, Sunday)

MAME is a coffee chain with a trio of locations in Zurich. I ordered another flat white and my friend had a cappuccino. Both tasted almost identical (the flat white is supposed to have less milk foam), but both were very good.

two cups of coffee with a heart design on top

Although it was a bit nippy with scattered showers outside, our visit came during a break in the rain and we sat outside, enjoying the crisp afternoon air.

I love the coffee culture in Zurich and was happy to find a pair of lovely coffee shops that I will return to. Nothing is particularly cheap in Zurich, but a good coffee will not break the bank (though at $7-8/cup, it must be one of the most expensive cups of coffee in the world outside fancy hotels).

Most things are more expensive in Switzerland because they have to import it via trains and trucks, which is more expensive than shipping it through freighter boats, and it’s a landlocked country.

If you’re interested, you should try the Grand Cafe Odeon that’s across the Limmat. That’s the cafe Einstein frequented a century ago when he was living in Zürich

' src=

Nice. Was in Geneva last year and had a great cortado at “Oh Martine”, just a few blocks from the Natural History Museum. Check it out next time you are there- not quite as expensive at the spots you visited in Zurich, I think around 5CHF for similar drinks.

' src=

It’s interesting to me that the signage in both of those coffee shops is entirely in English.

' src=

Typical in Zurich, where it seems everyone speaks excellent English.

Here are some additional coffees worth visiting in Zurich for the coffee lovers. Keep in mind that new coffee shops often open, so it’s always good to do additional research to not miss a gem.

– Miró (coffee roaster, great choice of filter coffee and milk based coffee) – Monocle (coffee shop, great milk based coffee) – Bean Bank Coffee & Co (coffeeshop, selection of multiple coffees to buy, also serve a cup of coffee) – MAME Josefstrasse (coffee roaster, At the Josefstrasse branch you can try MAME’s competition coffee. If you’re into Grand Cru coffee. Best light roast filter coffee in town)

Thanks for these suggestions, Tim.

You missed out the best place – not specifically coffee but chocolate too:

Confiserie Sprüngli on the corner of Paradeplatz and Bahnhofstrasse – walk out of Zurich Hbf along Bahnhofstrasse and it’s on the right after about seven minutes walk. You can’t beat it.
