Garbett point trek ❤️this plateau is beautiful heaven in matheran.
Images may take 30s to load, else refresh
First time I saw photos of Garbett plateau trek OR Garbett point trek I couldn’t resist looking at the photos again and again. That moment itself I planned that this was going to be my first monsoon trek that year. And here i was standing on Garbett plateau imagining how come such a beautiful place went unnoticed from me for so long. During monsoon clouds constantly cross Garbett plateau playing hide and seek with rain. This plateau view from the Garbett point of Matheran is what dreams are made of. Every once in a while clouds clear up to show beautiful views with Morbe dam on one side & Dhom lake on the other. In this Garbett point trek blog you will get all the information to plan this Garbett plateau trek yourself. More adventures like Garbett at the end of the post.
Matheran is one of the most famous hill stations in India where vehicles are not allowed. Normal tourists reach Matheran via the Neral toy train or just drive on the normal road to reach Dasturi Naka ( which is the entrance point of Matheran). These tourists then visit different view points of Matheran by walking or on a horse. However adventure lovers like me love to reach Matheran by trekking from base village to these view points. There are more than 10 Matheran trekking routes . Garbett point is such a beautiful view point in Matheran & this trek is a way to reach it from the base village. The namesake Garbett point provides a beautiful view of the Garbett plateau as seen by my friend Vicky just before monsoon.
Is Garbett point trek difficult for beginners ?
What is the difficulty level of Garbett plateau trek? Garbett trek is one of the easy sahyadri treks with perfect views in monsoon. You will need to have basic stamina to do this trek but trust me the views are so beautiful that no one will feel tired.
How long is the Garbett point trek ?
Niraj, how much time does it take to complete Garbett plateau trek ? It will take about 2.5 hrs to reach Garbett point and another 30 minutes to reach the main Matheran area. But make sure to have buffer time as you will click photos. Even the khadoos people who dont like to click photos turn into a photographer after reaching here. If you are planning a descend trek you will need 90 minutes to get down.
Khane me kya hai ?
Many hotels are available at Matheran & Diksal which the two end points of the trek. However i would suggest to support locals of Sagachiwadi which is at mid point for the trek. You can get tasty home made food here. ( checkout my trek food & trek gear )
Stay & Camping at Garbett Plateau
Hotels are available in Matheran which as you know is a famous hill station. Camping can be done on Garbett plateau in winter. In monsoon winds are too powerful for tents at Garbett point as well as Garbett plateau. Camping near Dhom dam seems to be a feasible option.
How to reach Garbett point trek from Mumbai and Pune ?
Garbett point trek to Matheran starts at Diksal, one walks through Diksal to reach Dhom dam. Walking around the dam we reach the Diksal waterfall . After a small stream crossing & a small climb we reach a big tree & further to a village called Sagachiwadi which is surrounded by paddy fields. From here walking pass a well we climb to reach the Garbett plateau.
Once we reach Garbett plateau we need to climb to the Garbett point where the trek is officially complete. From here one can reach Dasturi Naka ( entrance point of Matheran) take a shared taxi to Neral railway station and head home.
Nearest Railway Station is Bhivpuri Railway station (Diksal) & Neral Railway station ( For Moving to Matheran)
These two railway stations are very well connected with Mumbai and Pune. From Mumbai one can catch a Karjat local and get down directly at these stations. While coming from Pune one also get on a Karjat train and change to local trains at Karjat to get down at these stations which are 10-15 minutes away.
From Matheran to Neral station there is plenty of connectivity with shared taxis charging Rs 70 per head.
Route for the Garbett trek: Bhivpuri Railway Station > Diksal > Dhom Dam > Sagachiwadi > Garbett plateau > Garbett point > Matheran > Neral railway station

Garbett Point Trek to Matheran : TheFreeBird’s Story
As part of my #ProjectMatheran I am covering all the trekking routes to Matheran. Since the time I had seen photos of Garbett plateau I was counting days till monsoon. As soon as it started raining I took the first train to Bhivpuri road railway station. From station one needs to walk through the Diksal city (15-20 minutes) to Dhom dam from where the Garbett trek starts
Dhom dam has a huge expanse. The size of its banks changes through the year with the amount of water . During monsoon the water rises more and we need to walk more as backwaters rise in certain areas. Once I started walking past the dam I could see the Diksal waterfall & the BIG tree on its right side. The first target was to go near this waterfall
As I reached near the waterfall the sound of a near by water stream became louder and louder. I was enticed to take a plunge in this stream but the water was too cold. I didnt want to wet my shoes at the start of the trek hence I took them off for stream crossing.
The stream though not that big got me excited for the actual trek i.e climbing which starts from here. Taking the route on right side we reach this BIG TREE where we had out first snacks for the day. This tree’s shadow would be a blessing during a summer trek . With a small brunch we were once again on the trail.
Gradually climbing higher we first reach Sagachiwadi. The trail passes through many paddy fields before reaching here. With proper sunlight this would be a sight to behold but that day it was very cloudy . We made out way through the village. There are few food options available in this village. If not for the brunch 10 minutes back I would have definitely had something here. #SupportLocals
Many kids were excited to see us in full trekking gear. Some took fancy to my friends DSLR. He took many photos which no one ever got to see again. Classic DSLR guy !!! Passing through the village we reached a well where we filled our bottles
Just after the well is a sign directing us to start climbing the short hill to reach the Garbett plateau. The cloudy climate had started to clear up and the view was getting better & better with each step. Soon the weather cleared up & Dhom dam became visible.
I was finally going to reach the Garbett plateau after waiting months for monsoon to start. But as fate would have it, it was a huge anticlimax as clouds gathered all over the plateau minutes before I reached it. I was praying for the nature god to clear the climate and give me a sneak peak for the view around. We waited for some time in vain and started to walk towards the Garbett point. The clouds did clear up a bit but not as much as a photographer would have wanted..
How to get time & money to travel ?
Niraj, I love traveling but I dont get leaves. How can I work from mountains. Should I quit my job to travel? Sounds tempting, but then what about money. Savings only last so much. How to make money while traveling? I have tried trek leading, vlogging, and freelancing, but nothing worked till I found trading. This needs only 2-3 hours of work and has advantage of taking days off without asking anyone. If you can learn trading , you can earn from anywhere & travel everywhere while living life on your own terms, being your own boss.
Be it a village in Himachal, or an island in the Andamans you can earn from any corner of the world. Instead of wasting time on social media learn trading in your free time & all your dreams will come true. With just an internet connection and a trading account , you can escape the modern day slavery of 9-7 jobs to your dream life.
For freedom & income learn trading open account now!
The clouds continued to play with the mountain. The trees & Garbett point disappearing within clouds every now & then did provide a unique experience. We walked towards the Garbett point which was mostly hidden behind clouds untill we reached near it .
As we started climbing towards the Garbett point the clouds were back in action. Wind speed increased drastically making it even difficult to walk. I mean come on Nature God do you really want me not see anything on this Garbett trek ??
But even the darkest cloud has silver lining . The wind picking up speed bore unexpected fruits as the the clouds started to clear up & soon I was shocked to witness this Garbett plateau unravelling its beauty in a magical way.
This magic show lasted for couple of minutes before the clouds took over and we were walking through clouds again. As the wind picked up speed I kept my camera inside and slowly moved towards the Garbett point. The famous view from Garbett point Matheran had disappeared today and only railings were visible to identify the view point
Above is what Garbett point view of the plateau looks like without clouds but I feel the cloud experience is a hundred times better. Since no view was visible we moved ahead towards Matheran market. Its about 2 kms of walk to reach the main market. Even the inner trails in Matheran were cloudy.
We passed under many trees to finally reach the main road of Matheran which runs besides the railway track. This Garbett trail meets the Matheran railway track at this point which conveniently happens to be a tea stall. A cup of tea always tastes good when you been trekking for hours completely drenched.
With the hot tea in our systems we walked over the railway track to reach Matheran railway station where the toy train was parked for the monsoon season. The train service is stopped in monsoon due to constant landslides. We went to the main market area, moved around a bit before calling it a day
Next move was to reach Dasturi Naka, get into a shared taxi to Neral railway station. A day well spent in sahyadris
Till next time.

I saw similar pre monsoon clouds just yesterday where we couldn’t see scenery at all. We waited for half an hour for the clouds to clear up but they didnt go away. Got no photos 😓
Garbett is always covered in clouds. Sometimes you dont get to see much due to cloudy weather. But trust me its equally beautiful & be sure it would be much more memorable than the photos

Garbett Plateau: About the trek
Garbett Plateau is a famous trek in the Matheran region of Maharashtra and one of the best treks for beginners. July-September is the best time to do this trek, as the entire area is lush green & the climate is also pleasant.
The main Garbett point is at an altitude of 2625 ft.
The trek starts from the beautiful Dhom lake, a sight in itself during the monsoon season.
If you want to enjoy a day away from the hustle-bustle of city life, this should be your go-to trek in the monsoon.
Best Season: Monsoon (July-September)
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate (Endurance: Moderate)
Base Village: Diksal ( Google Map Link )
Altitude: 2625 ft.
How to reach
This trek is easily accessible via public transport if you are from Mumbai or Pune. Diksal is the base village which is near Matheran.
Public Transport:
The best way to reach Diksal is to take a train to Bhivpuri via Dadar or CST; you can download the M-indicator app on your phone for the train schedule.
It will take around 1.3 hours to reach Bhivpuri via train & will cost INR 40 for a return ticket to Dadar.
After finishing the trek, you can go towards Matheran & then take a shared cab or rickshaw to Neral station & take the train to Dadar. The taxi will cost INR 80 .
If you come from Pune, you can take t rains coming towards Mumbai & get down at Neral & take another local train or taxi to Bhivpuri .
Private Vehicle:
Distance from Mumbai is around 70 kms & will take around 1.5-2 hours to reach.
The distance from Pune is about 110 kms & takes around 2.5 hours to reach.
Trek Route & Difficulty
It is a good trek for physically fit beginners who can run 5 kms in under 40 mins or are moderately active.
The hike is around 10 kms long , but after reaching Garbett Point, it is a straight walk towards Matheran.
It will take about 4 hours to get the top from Diksal .
During monsoons, you can also enjoy the season Diksal waterfall just when you start the trek .
In recent years, the trek has become pretty famous, and now the trail is appropriately marked & hence you do not require a local guide to do the hike.
The first part of the trek from Dhom lake to Sagachiwadi is easy and doesn’t require much effort.
Sagachiwadi is almost at the 50% mark of the trek; one can take a break for some time because the climb to Garbett point from this village is steep & will require 1.5 hours to reach the plateau & another 30-40 mins to get to the end.
The final patch from Garbett point to Dasturi Naka (Matheran) is approximately 3kms, a gradual walk.

Garbett plateau trek guide, abdullah alam, 11 jul 2021.
Garbett Point and Garbett Plateau are situated at the top of one of the several mountains in the Matheran range. It it is at approximately the same altitude as Matheran, but having an open vista all around, with very few tall trees, it offers incredible views of the range all around. Here's how to get there.
Route #1: Bhivpuri
The route from Bhivpuri is the longer of the two. It is more scenic and beautiful, but also longer and slightly more difficult.
Here are the details -
Arrive at Diksal village. Bhivpuri railway station is located at the edge of Diksal, making it a convenient access point for the trek. From here, walk up to the reservoir of Dhom dam. The reservoir is near Diksal, and takes barely a couple of minutes to walk there.
Once at the reservoir, look for a trail that begins along the left bank of the reservoir. The trail is quite scenic, and runs at ground level along the bank for quite some distance, crossing streams and waterfalls. After walking some distance you will come across a river that runs into the reservoir. Cross this river to find the trail that leads up to the next village, Sagachiwadi. The trail leading to Garbett Plateau skims around Sagachiwadi. Follow the trail to reach Garbettt Plateau.
Garbett Point is another point a small climb up from the plateau, the highest point of that particular mountain.
Route #2: Matheran
This route is the easier one. Along the winding road upto Matheran, there is an opening in the wall on the left side, from where a trail that directly leads to Garbett Plateau begins. The local drivers there know where this is, and will drop you off at the right spot. The route is straightforward and well-made, and leads right to the plateau. A lot less challenging, it is perfect if you just want to visit the plateau to chill out for a while.
The Bhivpuri route is tricky to climb down in monsoons; the last leg of the trail is steep, with water trickling over the rocks. Easy enough to climb up, but trickier to climb down. Doable, but difficult. Here is an itinerary that I would advise to follow -
- Train to Bhivpuri
- Bhivpuri -> Dhom
- Dhom -> Sagachiwadi
- Sagachidwadi -> Garbett Plateau
- Garbett Plateau -> Matheran
- Matheran -> Neral
- Train back home from Neral
The route to Matheran from Garbett Plateau begins on the right side of the hillock on which Garbett Point is situated.
View from the end of the plateau
Cloud Formation
On one end of the plateau, lies Garbett Point. On the other end, the plateau ends into a cliff that forms a ridge with another mountain a little distance ahead (pictured above). That ridge, along with Garbett Plateau itself, form ideal conditions for orographic lift; a phenomenon where air moves up a sudden rise in the topography, either due to anabatic wind or simply horizontal winds being pushed up against a mountain.
This rising air cools down adiabatically, resulting in the rapid formation of clouds. If you are lucky, you might be able to see this happen up close.

Our Summer Trek to Garbett Plateau!
Home » Our Summer Trek to Garbett Plateau!
Travel is never a matter of money but of courage – Paulo Coelho.
A break is what every individual needs and deserves from the mundane lifestyle and the hectic Mumbai life. The best way to get away from this chaos is by making peace with nature. This is what we decided and zeroed down to Garbett Plateau trek. I wouldn’t say it was all bed of roses because we decided to go Superhero mode in March when the sun was blazing hot, but it was just what we needed #muchneededbreakpoint.
Avid trekkers will be aware of Garbett Plateau which offers 360-degree views of the Matheran range as you reach the top. The breath-taking views are something that gives you the satisfaction of the hard climb. Starting from Bhivpuri, the trek has ups and downs from flat to steep patches, which make your trek challenging yet exciting.
A Little Bit about Garbett Point
Located beautifully on the south-west of Matheran, Garbett Point trek is something no trekker or nature lover should miss. The panoramic views are just icing on the cake. While you trek on this plateau, did you know the story that goes behind it?
Well, let me tell you.
This beautiful and breathtaking spot was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the district collector of Thane district in 1850. He used this place for relaxation and leisure. Furthermore, foundations of it were laid as a future hill station by Lord Elphinstone – The Governor of Bombay. Indeed, Garbett Point is a beautiful spot that offers mesmerizing views.
About the Trek
- Trek Difficulty level: Medium
- Trek endurance level: High
- Region: Matheran
- Approximate time required for Garbett Plateau trek: Maximum 4 – 4.30 hrs from Bhivpuri road.
- Duration: 1 Day
- How to Reach – Karjat fast train (06.35 am) from CSMT
- Get down at Bhivpuri Road
- You will reach the station by 07.56 am
We started this long, challenging yet fun journey at 06.00 am by taking the Karjat Fast train from Ghatkopar at 6.35 am. We reached Bhivpuri station by 07.56 am. It is walking distance from the station to the Garbett Point. You will find rickshaws that will charge you around INR 200 – 300, but trust me, I would suggest you go walking to witness the beautiful Bhivpuri Lake. The rickshaw drops you near the Dhom Dam, which is quite closer to Garbett Point and the climb is not that much. There is also another way to reach the Garbett Point from Neral. So, you get down at Neral, take a toy train to Matheran and go on your adventurous journey.
Well, we decided to ditch the rickshaw and go walking. The walk was long and challenging, but it was worth it! The mesmerizing views and the crystal clear water of the Lake will just cool you off. The land was barren, but it was something we were expecting because it was March! The famous and pretty Bhivpuri Lake was just simply serene, calm and mesmeric. You are advised to not go deep inside the lake if you are planning for a dip because the mud is mushy and can just pull you inside. We had a word with a villager there, and she suggested us to not venture above knee-length water.
We started with our climb to the Garbett Plateau, and it was everything we expected. The hills were barren and hot. Here and there we found trees and made sure we took our break. For me, those shades were blessing to hide from the blazing sun. It was 9.00 am, and yet the sun was blazing hot. But there was no way we were going to give up because – “Life is a climb, but the view is great.”
You have to cross Diksal Village to reach the Garbett Plateau. The villagers are kind and helpful. We came across this guy named Balu who was kind and helped us take the right route to reach the Garbett Plateau. Since it was just us and no one else for the trek, the guy stood there guiding us till we reached halfway.
If you are planning to for Garbett Plateau trek, you can contact him on – 9011222804 . You can find his house in one corner as you walk through the village. He has a small shop near his house where he sells water and stuff for your trek. He is happy to help any trekker and offer right directions.
The breath-taking views of the surrounding region was the reason that kept us going. But the climb was worth! It was everything we had imagined. The views atop the hill were just enthralling. The view of the lake when you reach the top was something I cannot explain in words. We were glad we made it!
While at the Plateau, you have two options – You either take the longer route to reach Dasturi Naka or climb the steep section or make your way to Dasturi Naka. Since it was too hot; we decided to go with the latter one. It took us around 30-40 minutes to reach Dasturi Naka. Once we reached Dasturi Naka, we took a cab to Neral station and then headed to Matheran. Thereon, we had our mini vacation in Matheran.
My suggestion would be you go for this amazing trek during monsoon when the nature plays its part by offering you greenery, drops of enthralling rain and cool breeze. We decided to go for this trek only to get away from the mundane life and it was worth it!

Mumbai to Garbett Point Trek
Mumbai and its weekend trek stories are common to hear. But it is unusual when it is your first weekend in Mumbai and in spite of going shopping to Colaba or a stroll at Marine Drive and Chaupati you head down to the Sahyadris. And when you have a friend as a trekker who goes to trekking every weekend what else you need to ask for.
It was on him to decide the location, only condition was it should be beautiful and less crowded and that's why we chose to trek on Saturday as Sundays be much crowded. Every place is beautiful in monsoons he exclaimed. With the list of essentials to carry and time and place to reach he messaged me. 2 days before i landed in Mumbai and was down with cold and cough, not sure if i should go this weekend or postpone it but i didn't want to postpone it so lets go for it.
Bhivpuri Road
First local in the morning, I headed to Bhivpuri road, we started out trek at 7:30 after a quick poha breakfast. I initially wore the wind cheater but whats the feel of monsoon trek without getting drenched so took it off.
After passing through the green walls of houses there came a point, where he suddenly blind folded me, said the movie is about to start. I just couldn't stop myself shouting and jumping in excitement with the beautiful sight and there was not a single person. Beautiful and less crowded was the condition. Less crowded may be because we started early and it was Saturday.
The path was lush green offering views of several waterfalls flowing through the mountains and streams of water crossing by. It was already raining while we started.
Crossing the lush green fields.
The waterfall at the back turnout to be the huge one.
I was so terrified seeing it close but i went even more close and sat for nearly half an hour almost feeling like inside the water.
Initially i couldn't see the top from where it was falling downwards due to the heavy flow but after a time when i sat close to it it was the most beautiful sight to look at.
My friend exclaimed this being the first time when there was not a single person near the waterfall otherwise its very crowded.
When on one side we see the walls covered with algae and on other side this building being a school at this height is itself a luxury for the kids.
We reached a village and wave the kids.
Even if i hate khakhara but having it with this view is a treat .
Still a hill left to climb to the top .
The thought which always wanders in my mind seeing them is how they manage to trek upto this height.
The view from the top .
Garbett Point
Neral - Matheran Road
We headed down via Matheran which is down trek for another hour and took the shared taxi for Neral. My empty stomach couldn't wait for another second and so we had lunch and boarded the local from Neral.
Trek 1: Less crowded and beautiful. Check .
Basic information
How to reach
Route from Pune: Pune- Bhivpuri Road
Route from Mumbai: Take local for Karjat. Step down at Bhivpuri Road
Best time to trek
Monsoons are the best time to visit here as you can see waterfalls and streams of waters flowing.
Difficulty Level
It is beginners trek .
Time to Reach
It takes 4 hours to reach to the top and then you can trek down to matheran in an hour .From matheran you take sharing taxi for neral station which takes another half an hour.
Its a weekend / Day trek. One can return the same day or if you wish to stay at the top you need to stay in village or carry a tent.
What to carry
Make sure you wear something light and loose because sometimes you might have to take the big steps to climb and jeans won't allow to do that.
Carry sufficient water - Make sure you carry water specially when if you are not doing monsoon trek.
Food - Carrying snacks, fruits and energy bars is always the good idea while trekking. You never know when you might need them.
Sunscreen - If you don’t want to get tanned.

Overview :
How do you determine your fitness?
Trekking requires good cardiovascular fitness. One can improve this by going for a run on a regular basis and breathing exercises also helps. Smoking also hampers lung capacity, avoid smoking if you want to improve your cardiovascular health.
Even though trekking requires full body strength but strong lower body helps a great deal. Hamstring, Glute and Calves are main muscles that are put to test on treks to name a few. Gym goers often pay less attention to lower body workouts and hence sometimes struggle on trek.
Some treks have less elevation gain (height gain) but are long treks, those trek require good endurance. Endurance can not be built overnight, it takes a long time and constant active lifestyle.
Just because you take long walks, do yoga or go to the gym does not necessarily mean that you are in good fitness. The type of workout you do and your cardiovascular fitness is what matters on treks.
If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 25 then you should only start with Easy treks.
How do we grade our treks ? Easy: Ideal for first timers but if you are not in good fitness or have a less active lifestyle then select treks which have less than 2 hours of climbing.
Easy Moderate: Ideal for first timers, but requires good endurance as these treks may have longer duration of climb even though terrain may be easy. Moderate: These trek require good fitness and the terrain can be challenging, like constant climb or tricky patches. These are usually recommended only if you have done a few treks before and have done well on them. Fit and active beginners can also do these treks but we always suggest to start with easy treks. Moderate-Difficult: These trek are only for trekkers who have done few moderate level treks before and have good fitness and endurance.
Difficult: These treks either have long trekking hours or have technical climb or both. Only suitable for people who trek regularly.
