Happy Pushkin Hotel

A charming small hotel in St. Petersburg's historic centre, the Happy Pushkin owes its somewhat peculiar name to the fact it is housed in an early-19th century apartment building where Russia's greatest poet, Alexander Pushkin, spent the first year of his marriage - presumably one of the happier periods of his turbulent life. It was here that Pushkin began the composition of his epic poem The Bronze Horseman, inspired by the famous equestrian monument to Peter the Great nearby. Featuring attractively decorated and very spacious guest rooms named after important figures in Pushkin's life, the Happy Pushkin Hotel offers accommodation rich in historic details, while providing a good level of contemporary comfort and convenience, including complimentary Wi-Fi access throughout. Aimed mainly at tourists, the hotel has little in the way of extra amenities or facilities, but offers an extensive range of concierge services. There is no restaurant at the hotel, but breakfast is served in-room. The Happy Pushkin Hotel is located on Galernaya Ulitsa, within comfortable walking distance of several major visitor attractions, including the Mariinsky Theatre and St. Isaac's Cathedral but some distance from the bustle and bright lights of Nevsky Prospekt. This makes it one of the best places to soak up St. Petersburg's historic atmosphere, although the downside is the lack of a metro station in the immediate vicinity. Nonetheless, for visitors most interested in St. Petersburg's rich history and culture, the Happy Pushkin Hotel is definitely worth exploring.

2024 rodeo queen marks a milestone for the Pendleton Round-Up

At 1:15 p.m. Sept. 15, 2021, a loud boom signaled the start of the rodeo in the Pendleton Round-Up arena . Round-Up Princess Kayla Fossek entered on a sorrel horse wearing red leather chaps and matching red roses on her hat. She had dreamed of this moment since childhood.

Galloping over 30 mph, Fossek jumped the rail, then raced around the track with one hand on the reins and the other waving to thousands of spectators.

“Sailing over the rail quite literally feels like flying,” says Fossek.

Practicing for the Grand Entry requires more than 100 hours, but the whirlwind event itself ends within minutes. It’s a once in a lifetime experience that Fossek will get to live out again when she enters the arena Sept. 11 as the 2024 Round-Up Queen.

Her reign marks a milestone for the Round-Up . A member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation , Fossek is the first Native American Round-Up queen since the last All Indian Round-Up Court ended in 1953 and the first to hold the three titles of Happy Canyon princess and Round-Up queen and princess.

“Kayla has grown so much in her ability to be confident in who she is and what she represents,” says Round-Up Court coach Toni Minthorn, who is also a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation. “She’s a great leader. She has high expectations of herself and those around her.”

Founded in 1910 to celebrate its Wild West roots and showcase the skills of cowboys across the Northwest, today the Pendleton Round-Up draws around 50,000 spectators every second week of September. The event is famed (and feared) for its large grassy arena and is a seven-time winner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year award.

From its beginning, the Round-Up has been characterized by its Native American participation. Umatilla, Walla Walla and Cayuse people from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation, located next to Pendleton, and other regional tribes set up over 300 tipis in the same spots that their ancestors camped in over 100 years ago. In the evenings, Native people and cowboys join to put on the Happy Canyon Night Show, Oregon’s official outdoor pageant, which reenacts life before European settlement and tells the story of how Pendleton came to be.

Representing the night show and the rodeo are the Happy Canyon princesses (established in 1956) and the Round-Up princesses and queen (established in 1910). Together, they travel to other rodeos and events across the country to promote the show throughout the year. During Round-Up week, the courts make appearances before the Happy Canyon show and for the Grand Entry.

While the Happy Canyon princesses are affiliated with local tribes, the Round-Up Court positions are open to anyone who can represent the Western lifestyle and rodeo culture.

Fossek held the title of Happy Canyon princess in 2019. She is the fifth person to hold both the titles of Happy Canyon and Round-Up princess after Minthorn (Happy Canyon 1978 and Round-Up 1982), Debra Weathers Croswell (1985 and 1988), Katie Harris (2010 and 2012) and Marissa Baumgartner (2014 and 2015).

One of Fossek’s hopes as queen is to encourage more Native American girls to apply to be on the Round-Up Court. She notes the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation’s long ties to horses and the emphasis on horsemanship on the Round-Up Court.

“This tribe’s culture is so enveloped in horses, and they’re so deep in the blood of this area,” says Fossek.

The Cayuse people were especially known for their skilled horsemanship and the development of the Cayuse pony. A wealthy Cayuse family would own upwards of 2,000 horses, according to tribal history .

“With modern times a lot of that history has been lost,” says Fossek. “With such a big platform like Round-Up, I really want that side of the culture to be shown.”

Though Fossek was born and raised on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation next to a big rodeo town, her family didn’t always ride or own horses. Growing up, she remembers seeing wild horses roam while hunting on the reservation with her dad.

“I was always horse crazy,” says Fossek. “I spent years and years begging for one.”

When the tribe conducted a wild horse roundup, her father decided to adopt two of them. Minthorn recalls meeting Fossek there.

“She was kind of shy then, but she wanted a horse,” says Minthorn, who breeds horses. “After that, she started taking lessons and working [for me].”

With a Round-Up poster on her bedroom wall, Fossek spent hours every day watching YouTube videos about horses.

Soon, Minthorn began taking Fossek to training sessions with the Round-Up Court, where Fossek helped to line up the horses. If there was time, Fossek would practice jumping.

“I idolized the girls. They were my role models as a little girl,” says Fossek. “Being able to train with them before I even tried out was awesome.”

Many court members spend their childhoods ranching and competing in rodeos. Lacking that background, Fossek knew she would have to work extra hard to hone her riding skills.

Preceding her years on the courts, Fossek began volunteering at the Round-Up sorting steers and selling souvenirs at the FFA booth. She also acquired her paint horse, Billy, that she competed with in the American Indian Beauty Pageant during Round-Up.

While Fossek had grown up immersed in tribal culture it wasn’t until she became the 2019 Happy Canyon princess along with her cousin that she learned about her family’s long connection to the court. Fossek was surprised when she discovered that 18 of the women on her father’s side had served as Happy Canyon princesses.

“When I started working for Toni, she told me. My dad didn’t even know,” says Fossek. “There’s so much history that I truly just did not know. Being involved in Happy Canyon has taught me more of my Native American culture than anything.”

Fossek’s paternal grandmother had passed away before she was born, and her mother is not a tribal member, so much of the knowledge that would traditionally be passed down between generations of women was lost.

During her Happy Canyon reign, Fossek carried a purse beaded by her grandmother, the only beaded item Fossek’s family retained. Fossek’s regalia, including a fully beaded cape, and horse trappings were made by her aunt and previously worn by her other cousin who served as a 2018 Happy Canyon princess.

Buckskin dresses, traditional clothing worn for formal occasions, are often passed down through several generations and can take years to make. Wing dresses, made of a lighter fabric, are often used for more casual events.

“If it’s raining or really hot out or you want to be festive, wing dresses are really fun because you can go with any color and they’re fairly quick to make,” says Fossek.

Participating in Happy Canyon has also given Fossek’s family the opportunity to create new heirlooms.

“God bless my mother,” says Fossek. “She made regalia and had no clue what she was doing just so my kids could have heirlooms.”

After the 2019 Round-Up week, Fossek transitioned from Happy Canyon to Round-Up princess and from high school to college student. (She graduated from Pendleton High School in 2019 and from Blue Mountain Community College in 2024.) Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Round-Up was canceled in 2020 for the third time in its history (the other years were 1943 and 1944 due to World War II).

During the pandemic, public appearances were conducted in the open and large parties turned into small private gatherings. A new tradition was started when the court decided to host its kickoff party in the middle of the Round-Up grounds. Though the rules normally prevented court positions from being held multiple years, Fossek and the others were given the opportunity to continue their reign into 2021.

“It was like a fever dream now that I look back,” says Fossek.

The two years in between Fossek’s reign as a princess and queen allowed her to grow as a person and rider. As a mentor to the princesses, the key qualities that the directors look for, besides having served as princess, are maturity and leadership.

Though the princesses have referred to themselves as Fossek’s entourage, Fossek is more than happy to give them the spotlight.

“I’ve had my time, so this is an opportunity to be like, these are my girls and to show them off to the world,” says Fossek. “The experiences you get from being in a position like this are awesome, and I just want to help them experience that in the best way possible.”

The court traveled to Canada this year for the world-famous Calgary Stampede (the court’s last attendance was in 2014), a highlight for the group. In the final two months before Round-Up, the court stays closer to home, making appearances in Joseph and Sisters.

“You feel the energy building,” says Fossek. “When they see us, they know Round-Up’s coming. Especially when we do school visitations, it’s like Santa’s coming to town.”

To Fossek, being the first to hold all three court titles feels like a culmination of all the hard work put in over the years, not just by her, but also by her family and mentors.

“So many people worked hard to get me to the point where I could ride and speak well,” says Fossek. “This year I want to use this platform to give them the recognition they deserve and help them reach their goals ‘cause I’m big on taking a step back.”

Jason Hill, a Round-Up director, says that family support is essential for members of the court.

“I don’t know if a girl could do it without that,” Hill says. “Their families will travel in front of them, and it’s their responsibility to get the horse ready for the princesses and queen.”

For Fossek, having her parents along on the road with her has been a highlight of this year.

“It’s like they’re little kids again, being able to travel and have fun, and that’s so fun for me to watch,” says Fossek.

On her mother’s side, Fossek hopes to inspire her cousins who don’t have a connection to Happy Canyon to try out for Round-Up Court. For both Happy Canyon and Round-Up court applicants, having a family legacy is an asset.

“I’m still half white, and so I do have a lot of family that aren’t enrolled [tribal members],” says Fossek. “I never had the cowboy side, so being able to give them that history to get a step in the door will hopefully make it easier for them.”

Fossek’s family has already seen several changes. A few years after the adoption of her first horses, her family acquired a wheat farm with enough land for a herd, which today includes nine horses. Fossek’s cousins now ride in parades, and her brothers use the horses for everything from camping and hunting to performing prescribed burns.

“The dream of Round-Up and just that love for the horses and Western lifestyle, it has completely transformed not just my life but my whole family’s,” says Fossek. “If I wasn’t a horse crazy little girl nagging my parents, I couldn’t imagine us having all this.”

For her final year on the courts, Fossek is focused on savoring every moment.

“I’ve just been amped for months to hit Round-Up and do it all, but at the same time I’m really trying to take every second in,” says Fossek.

After Round-Up is over, Fossek plans to continue her studies in biology and explore career options. However, she sees herself staying close to home where she’ll be able to stay involved in the Round-Up whether that’s through working at a booth or mentoring her younger cousins who aspire to be court princesses.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Fossek. “Growing up not knowing that I would be able to do this and going as far as I have, I still can’t believe it some days.”
