Then visit the Kiwi Wildlife Centre to learn about their efforts to save New Zealand’s iconic bird. Continuing our journey down the coast, we stay in the remote outpost of Haast.
  • Day 6 – Start the day with a spectacular jet boat up the Haast River before driving up and over the Southern Alps via the Haast Pass. Get back on your bike for a fabulous ride from Lake Hawea to Wanaka. We then drop you off at your Queenstown accommodation in time for dinner.

We pick you up bright and early for the drive up to Mt Cook/Aoraki National Park – with some of the most dramatic scenery in New Zealand. • Day 11 – Today the landscape changes from alpine high country to a braided river valley. The fabulous section of riding takes you past 3 huge lakes  where you’ll learn about the hydro power stations. Enjoy a wine tasting in Kurow, followed by dinner at a fabulous lodge.
  • Day 12 – Follow the river as it crosses 3 small creeks. After morning tea, visit the Elephant Rocks and some amazing limestone outcrops before you get your first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. Through Raki’s tunnel you’ll cross a patchwork quilt of farmland to reach your luxury accommodation.
  • Day 13 – Enjoy the last few kilometres of pasture and botanic gardens to reach the Pacific Ocean in Oamaru. Celebrate with some wood-fired pizzas at a local brewery. Then you can choose to take a bus back to Christchurch (included) or return in tour van back to Queenstown.

Tour Aotearoa, NZ South Island, Te Waipounamu

Leave a review

  Tour Operator   Escape Adventures NZ

    New Zealand

  20   days   (Bike: 16 days)

  1410   km   (~ 88 km  per day)

  Mixed on/off-road , Hilly

Adventure awaits you, biking the Tour Aotearoa, South Island - Te Waipounamu Cycle Tour

This is a stunningly diverse bike ride from the Marlborough Sounds to Bluff in the deep south. The ride takes in the historically mysterious Maungatapu track, Nelson Lakes National Park, and as we ride down the wonderful west coast of New Zealand we encounter a fabulous combination of wild coastlines, rain forest, cows, cowboys and possibly cow seals? The ‘Tour Aotearoa’ South Island – Te Waipounamu is a 1410km cycling route created by the Kennett Brothers exploring the length of the South Island from Picton to Bluff and riding on as many of New Zealand’s off road cycle trails and quiet back roads as possible. We have created a fully supported version of the Tour Aotearoa so that you you can ride a full island or indeed the full length of New Zealand knowing that we have got your back! Our Tour Aotearoa – South Island closely follows this classic route and also includes plenty of quirky extras, stop-overs and special places in the true Escape Adventures’ style.

Whether you choose to ride the full length of New Zealand or just one Island at a time – we’ll sort the nitty gritty. Before your tour begins, we will organise all the logistics and book all accommodation.

We will give you daily digital route maps, that you can follow on your phone or GPS, and route cue notes so that you can ride at your own pace, stop when you like to smell the roses and grab a coffee when the opportunity presents, while always knowing that we are there if you need us.

On tour, your awesome Escape Adventures support crew will have your breakfast ready for an early start and provide snacks for you to carry with you. They will provide daily ride information and ride sweep with first aid and mechanical support. Our support vehicle will carry your luggage, and on most days set up a ‘floating picnic lunch’ on route so that you can dine’n’dash and top up on water and snacks. The support vehicle is also there if you need first aid or mechanical support, or if you need a break from the saddle.

31-124km riding per day on wonderfully remote and scenic riding route. Approximately 64% sealed roads / 21% quiet gravel roads and 15% cycle trails. There are some big climbs, big downs, undulating coastal terrain and of course there is also some flat terrain. Cycle trails have variable terrain and generally slow riding speed. Dirt/gravel road biking experience will add to the enjoyment of your tour.

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

In order to access the most scenic routes and significant points of interest on this trip, strategic shuttles are incorporated into several days of our itinerary. Most will be limited to an hour or so at a time, but on some days you can expect to spend a bit more time in the shuttle—though always to reach a worthwhile destination!

Due to a significant rise in tourism in New Zealand, the South Island has seen an increase in car traffic along its western coast.  While our shuttles are often along these busier roads, we ride on scenic bike routes off the main highway to ensure your safety while still delivering as much of New Zealand's grandeur and stunning scenery. Keep in mind that even on quieter roads, vehicles may move at faster speeds than you might expect.

While our hotels are some of the finest in New Zealand, the relaxed Kiwi approach to service is reflected in the hotels on this trip—they are down-to-earth, without a lot of bells and whistles, and may not offer the level of customer service that you might be used to.

Adventure-Ready Hotels

Ideally located with ready access to trip activities, our Casual hotels are also known for their character and charm.

Hotels may vary based on departure. Any variations will be displayed when selecting a departure under Dates & Prices.

Scenic small group tours of New Zealand

Our group of 11 loved the tour through the iconic Molesworth and beyond. Hosts very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and responsive to individual needs. Food and accommodation top class. Scenery fantastic and our group (half using e-bikes and half mountain bikes) all loved the daily rides. Some who wanted to do more were able to which was much appreciated. A big thank you to our tour leaders for making this one of our best NZ cycling experiences

It was a really great ride made all the more enjoyable with all the interesting stories told by Geoff and Phil and the great food presented beautifully by our “hostess with  the mostest” Sue, aka bus driver. She’s a multitasker extraordinaire!!!

The meal at Kelly’s farm was lovely. It was neat to have her and her wee girls join us for lunch and being able to ask her questions about the farm made it really interesting. The stay at the shearers quarters was cool. We loved the meal there too. Great  to have the support of Phil riding with us encouraging everyone and the bus to collapse in if you wished to.

All in all a wonderful experience which I would highly recommend to anyone.

Just to say thank you to you both for a really great holiday! For all the necessary background work and admin required for a tour like this you do a wonderful job Lee so much appreciation! Geoff, you were an excellent tour guide, really well informed and great company, all the details which help to make a very special experience. To add to it all, your baking was delicious Lee and also much appreciated! Thank you again

Thank you for organising the new trip to the West Coast and White Heron Colony. We know that under our own steam we could never have seen and done as much as we did in the time your trip took. So thanks to your planning and the excellent driving, we were both able to relax and enjoy everything on offer.

Of course the highlight was the visit to the White Heron nesting site – an experience to stow away in the memory bank! Having said that there were so many other memorable experiences and I’ll never forget that wonderful garden at Walter Peak Station.

We had a FANtastic trip, Phil and Sue were both amazing and I have to say that I honestly have not enjoyed an organised trip more ever (and I’ve done a few ). The food was unbelievable, the scenery stunning and I really enjoyed staying at the station and even got to see a bit of mustering. An added bonus! I would highly recommend this company and would do another tour with them for sure!

We had the best tour ever far exceeded our expectations from the guides Sue and Phil to the food prepared by Barb and the hosts at the stations were amazing. Sue and Phil were outstanding …so down to earth and friendly nothing was too much bother.

The scenery was spectacular and the ride exhilarating…loved it.

It was an amazing experience, allowing us the opportunity to see some of the vast countryside and scenery up close and talk to some of the locals. You cannot appreciate the landscape and lifestyle when you “fly over the area at altitude”.

This trip was on our bucket list and we can now add the memories to our life experience, (some of which was a bit out of my comfort zone) but well worth it! But, don’t forget the yarns, and great company along the way too

The best of New Zealand by bike

Cycling new zealand is among the best cycling in the world.

Cycle across the Southern Alps, in the rain forest or along the seacoast all in breath taking scenery. From the far north of the North Island to the far south of the South Island, we offer the best cycling tours throughout New Zealand. The two islands are dramatically different, each deserving a separate leisurely biking tour.

To the East of the North Island lies the  Coromandel Peninsula .  It is renowned for magnificent natural beauty and being an outdoor haven where rugged terrain is contrasted by an idyllic coastline. These natural features provide inspiration for the local artisans and you’ll find unique attractions hidden around each corner and tucked into every bay. The laid back culture, locally known as ‘Coromandel time’, encourages a relaxed atmosphere.

We have something for everyone from a leisurely two-day bike tour to a spectacular 21-day cycle tour in New Zealand.

new zealand bike tours south island

An island nation of 3.8-million—1200-miles across The Tasman Sea from its next closest country—New Zealand consistently ranks in the top tier of quality of life, health and education studies.

Queenstown (pop 15,000), in particular, aspires to be the most cycle-friendly region in New Zealand.  Suffice to say, we’re at one with their goal, stoked to do our part to support a community defined by this admirable vision. As such, we’ll wholeheartedly sample the extraordinary mountain biking throughout South Island. From glaciated mountains, distinct for their biodiversity, our South Island tour will traverse landscapes that change dramatically over relatively short distances and provide the most amazing mountain bike tour in the world.

Day 1-2: Meet in Christchurch. Heading north, to the alpine village of Hanmer Springs we ride forested singletrack.  Unwind in the Hanmer thermal pools to closeout the day. Next day, ride the challenging Wharfedale Track. Layover in Arthur’s Pass National Park: amidst snowcapped peaks and clean-swept ravines of the Waimakariri River Valley. Day 3-4: A relaxed drive to Craigieburn Forest taxies us to a ski resort; a half-day of rides. Shuttle to Geraldine: take in a night of small-town New Zealand. Ride over Dansey’s Pass, a high country tussock land in the Kakanui Mountains. A day of stellar singletrack concludes with dinner, then a relaxing night at a privately run bed and breakfast. Day 5-6 : Spend the day riding trails on the Lord of the Rings’ filming location: the “Land of Rohan”.  Shuttle to the top of Dunstan Mountains for the epic Dunstan Traverse from Leaning Rock. Spend the night in the outdoor adventure mecca of Queenstown. Day 7: Optional Heli-biking (a separate charge, based on the number of riders) or singletrack riding around Queenstown; wander around Queenstown, a handsome bayside community. Shuttle back to Christchurch.

All-Inclusive Prices

All internal land expenses and services are covered in the cost of your tour. This means from the time we pick you up at our meeting point, until we drop you back off to head home, all transportation, food preparation, meals (except where noted on itineraries), snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, group supplies and community gear (portable chairs, large awnings, coolers, utensils, etc.) are included. Backcountry permits, licenses, park fees, reservations, and accommodations (lodging) are also included, along with at least two professionally trained trip leaders, a mobile first aid and mechanic station, spare bikes, and a support vehicle(s). Trip price does not include airfare, lodging prior to trip start or bicycle rental and/or camping gear (if on a camping tour) unless otherwise noted on itinerary or website.

Renting Bicycles

Not only do we run an international bike tour business, but we also own and operate two premiere bicycle stores –  www.LasVegasCyclery.com  and  www.MoabCyclery.com . We have learned over the years that every cyclist is different and prefers different types of bikes for different types of terrain. That is why we offer the best bicycles for rent in the business. If for some reason you are not happy with the quality of your rental, we will refund the cost of your entire bike rental. If you are bringing your bike with you, check with your airline’s baggage policy in advance and be sure to pack your bike accordingly. If you are shipping your bike to your destination, confirm the address with our office and allow enough time for your bike to arrive. We’re happy to help you ship your bike. Whatever you need to get the most out of your tour, we are here to make it happen.

Our commitment to you.

For over 25 years, the hallmark of an Escape Adventures tour is personalized, hands-on service. Before, during, and after each trip. We are a company of honesty and integrity and we stand behind our product 100%. From the moment you learn of our trips, to the time you return home and start planning your next trip, we are here to bring you the best possible experience. From our Guaranteed Trip Departure Confirmation Policy, making sure your trip is never cancelled*, to our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee Policy, backing the unrivaled consistent quality of all our tours, our commitment to you is never compromised.  * Scheduled Domestic trips only.

Our Commitment to the Environment

Our environmental commitment is second to none. We run our tours the same way we run our company, with an eye on the triple bottom line: People, Profit & Planet. At Escape Adventures, we elected to pursue a more comprehensive approach to actually reduce our carbon footprint, rather than just offset it. We overhauled our entire operation — from our vehicles, to our buildings, to our procedures — to become an outdoor industry leader in the charge to help our people and our planet.

Exceptional Service and Exceptional Guides

Leading tours naturally followed from our passion of exploring our favorite places with our friends. Our support staff includes our reservation team who is there to answer your questions about the tours, our service team who prepares your bike and gear for the tour, and our guide team – the ones who take you into the great outdoors. The highest level of responsibility, good nature, integrity, and dedication are standard traits of all those who work at Escape Adventures. We our proud of it and we think you should know it.

The Best Support Vehicles

Having custom-made vehicles allows us to take you to places few other outfitters can, or will go. Every Escape Adventures tour is accompanied by at least one support vehicle, trailer, and in some cases a second and third transfer van. After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. For example, certain trucks are specifically designed for The White Rim and The Maze, while others are designed for The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Each of our guides is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced guides make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, and plenty of drinking water to a remote location.

The Best Bicycles and Gear

Make your trip as comfortable as possible on the body, as simple as possible for traveling, and hassle-free on tour. By choosing to rent a bike from us, we will fit you with the newest, highest quality gear in the industry. Escape Adventures provides only high-end bicycles from Santa Cruz and Specialized. We replace our rental fleet each season to ensure all our rentals meet our standards. All of our mountain bikes are equipped with full suspension frames and disc brakes designed for a smooth, comfortable ride. For those who are touring with a companion who may not be as fit or need a little help up the hills, we now have eMountainbikes (electric pedal assist) available on select tours.

The Best Food

Our food isn’t just good, it’s good for you.

Food is a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. Most dinners and breakfasts are served at local restaurants on our inn tours. We also have energy snacks aboard our support vehicles. Don’t be surprised if your guides purchase fresh fruits and healthy snacks throughout the day while you are out riding. They may just show up on the trail with a local treat! Many of our guests are vegans or vegetarians, whom we are more than happy to accommodate. If you have special diet requirements or limitations, just let us know when you sign-up and we’ll work with you to meet your needs.
