25 Off-The-Beaten-Path Places in India to Chill & Relax

India is such a rat race! It’s not uncommon to sit in traffic for an hour to just go across a big city like Chennai. I grew up in a small forest in Michigan though and I still enjoy beautiful natural quiet places where you can get away from people and bask in silence.

I’ve been lucky to spend a lot of time in relaxing places here in India and I’m researching what are some other good places to chill. Here are the top 25 places to chill and relax in India:

Table of Contents

25. Auroville, South India

auroville dome

It’s an experimental community that strives to be free of government, money, religion, and violence. It’s set on a 20 sq km of beautiful property not far from the beaches of Pondicherry.

The highlight is the Matrimandir, the central meditation dome which is the largest optically-perfect glass globe in the world.

Many people come to live a quiet life together, others come for workshops, and others come to take pictures with the beautiful dome. Check the visitor center to learn about seeing the dome, the rules are strict and it may take 2 or more days for you to be allowed inside.

Auro Beach is considered one of the best beaches on India’s Eastern Coastline, although I wouldn’t expect it to rival the beaches in Goa or the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

There’s also plenty of organic farms. The inhabitants make organic food and coffee. You can find a Tibetan Centre as well.

24. Neil Island, Bay of Bengal

Neil Island

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are little-known islands to Westerners which have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island has been called “Asia’s best beach” by Time Magazine. It has soft white sand and turquoise blue waters that might be perfect for your beach vacation.

Neil Island is less touristy, smaller and has a cozier feel than Havelock Island though.

If you’re looking to escape from other tourists, then you can take a government ferry from Port Blair to this quiet island. The beaches are NOT great for swimming since there is a lot of coral nearby. But you could spend your time relaxing on the beach or rent a motorbike or bicycle and cruise around the island.

23. Marina Beach, Chennai

Marina Beach Chennai

Chennai is one of the most popular tourist destinations and is a big crazy Indian city. The city lies on the Bay of Bengal though and is home to the second-largest beach.

If you go in the evening there are hundreds of families and couples riding ponies and flying kites. You can find lots of stalls and foods and it’s a popular place to hang out at sunset.

However, if you go in the morning at sunrise, you can find the place mostly deserted.

I walked with my feet in the waves and spoke with the few locals and tourists that were there as well. You can walk for miles and meet very few people in one of the largest cities in India. It’s a great place to take photographs as well!

22. Agonda Beach, Goa

Goa Sunset Beach

Goa has some of the most beautiful beaches in India and has about 78 miles of coastline. About 2.29% of all foreign tourists in India head to Goa (according to data from 2011).

In the 2015 – 2016 tourism season, over 100,000 Russian tourists visited Goa and over 30,000 English tourists visited.

If you want wild crazy beach parties and raves, Goa is the place. However, you can also find quiet secluded beaches like Agonda Beach .

Agonda Beach is an isolated stretch of beach just outside of Goa with soft warm sand and clear blue waters where you can enjoy listening to the quiet sound of waves lapping. It’s not entirely deserted as there are accommodations and restaurants and souvenir stalls though.

21. Jawhar, near Mumbai

man under waterfall

Mumbai is the second most populated city in the world. It’s a whole experience in and of itself, but you’d want to be ready to be rubbing elbows with people most of the day.

However, just over 100 miles from Mumbai is the hill town of Jawhar that is known for the beauty of the rustic hills and waterfalls.

The Dabdaba Falls are gushing waterfalls not far from the center of town in a lush forest. There’s also the Jai Vilas Palace which is one of the most prominent historic sites in the area. It was home to the kings of the Munke Family. The architecture of the Shirpamal palace is known for tribal culture and Warli art.

Sunset Point is where you can look out at beautiful views of nature that is great for couples.

20. The Beatles Ashram, Rishikesh

beatles ashram

Rishikesh has been called the Yoga Capital of the world. It’s a spiritual town known for having a number of ashrams and many tourists looking to find their bliss.

If you want to get away from the crowds, this ashram was where the Beatles went to find enlightenment in 1968.

It’s tricky to find but worth the effort. Turn right after Ram Jhula bridge then follow the busy street along the Ganges. You’ll then see a muddy path, follow that to end. You’ll know you’re heading in the right direction if you see a Last Chance Cafe (grab a chai!) and a small sign that reads Beatles Ashram. You’ll walk almost to a dried up river bed that leads to the Ganges, then walk up it ~150 meters and the gates of the ashram should be right in front of you.

It costs 100 rupees as a donation.

Inside you’ll be happy you made the effort. Ringo compared the ashram to “a kind of spiritual Butlins” (a low-cost British holiday camp). There are stone buildings and a beautiful path and some really cool graffiti.

What will strike you the most is the solitude of the place and the feeling you’re not on at a typical tourist destination.

19. Sarnath Deer Park, near Varanasi

sarnath deer park

Varanasi is a well-known Hindu holy city where you can watch sadhus bathe in the Ganges. It also has a lot of tourists so if you want to get away, you could go ~7 miles away to the deer park.

Sarnath is known as the spot where the Buddha first taught his Dharma after he became enlightened. It is one of the four holy Buddhist sites that the Buddha himself said would be good to make a pilgrimage too.

Sarnath or Sarangantah means “Lord of the Deer” and is related to the classic Buddhist story about the Buddha being a deer and offering his life to a king instead of the female deer he is planning to kill. The king then creates this park as a sanctuary for deer.

You can look at beautiful white-spotted deer in a natural setting with temples.

18. Warwan Valley, Kashmir

warwan valley india

Kashmir has been called a ‘paradise on Earth.’ Warwan Valley is one of the least explored places in Kashmir. It is between Kashmir and Ladakh and has captivating waterfalls, majestic forests and other naturally beautiful spots.

The Warwan Valley is a Himalayan sub-valley that could only be reached by hiking in the past. There is now a road that goes over the Margan Pass and takes you into the heart of the main village of Inshin.

The local people are descended from ancient Kashmiris and their language is the purest form of Kashmiri.

This is a beautiful place to take photos of mountains and also meeting the local people who have inhabited this remote region for generations.

17. South Park Street Cemetery, Kolkata

Kolkata has a population of over 4 million people and is the second largest city in India. However, if you want to get away from the crowds, you can step into a quiet cemetery that will take you back into Kolkata’s colonial past.

The South Park Street Cemetery will send chills down your spine. Time seems to stand still as you walk through the graves and tombs. There are flower-lined avenues but you can feel the past and it’s eerie!

You can’t take a DSLR camera into the cemetery but you can take photos with your phone or a smaller camera. There are also informative plaques to take you into what life might have been like in an era that is no longer with us.

Come to ponder your death and the pieces of wisdom that might hold for you. 🙂

16. Gingee Fort, South India

This is a small town in Tamil Nadu less than 100 miles from Chennai. As you approach it the rocks jut up from the plains in a majestic way and you’re surrounded by huge boulders and a wall that stretches off into the distance.

There are very few tourists here and the fort is an ancient wonder that makes me feel as if I’m an Indian ruler protecting the countryside from invaders.

The Fort has been called Troy of the East, because it was built as an impregnable fortification.

To reach the top you must be in pretty good shape as it is quite a workout that takes a few hours. There are many places for photo opportunities with the views, a temple, and small caves.

15. Arambol Beach, North Goa

goa beach

This traditional fishing village has become a spot for people who want a chill hippie hangout. It is the most north of all beaches in Goa near the Maharashtra border.

There are a number of cafes but you won’t find the luxury resorts or commercialized hotels that have come so popular in Goa. There are rustic guesthouses and huts on the beach you can rent though.

You can also find drum circles, yoga classes and local sellers hawking their wares.

For photography, you can find plenty of traditional fisherman for subjects, or even cows chilling out on the beach.

14. Yarada Beach, East India

Unlike Goa, on the East coast of India north of Chennai you can also find exotic beautiful beaches, just with fewer tourists and hippies.

Yarada Beach is an unspoiled less frequented beach known more for natural beauty and peace , than for all-night rave parties and water sports. You also won’t find the five-star hotels lining the beach.

What you will find is the second-largest coast and the longest beach road in the country. Ten miles from the Visakhapatnam, the largest city in the state of Andhra Pradesh, you can find this beach. There’s a village nearby and this beach is a well-kept local secret.

13. Ganpatipule Beach, near Mumbai

South of Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra, you can find almost 500 miles of beaches leading eventually to Goa’s border.

Here you can break free from the tourist trail and find a place like the beach of Ganpatipule Beach.

There are an abundant number of flowers, mangroves, and palm trees with coconuts. Nearby is the temple of Swayambhu Ganesh and this does get a number of pilgrims. But you can find fewer people on the beach and is a nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle.

12. Pangong Tso, Ladakh

places to visit for relaxation in india

Ladakh is famous in North India for Buddhist monasteries and outdoor adventures. If you want to head into the Himalayas and become enlightened, this might be a good place to start. You can also find tourists looking for authentic Pashmina shawls.

Pangong Tso is a pristine lake in the mountains located on the border with Tibet, in fact, two thirds of the lake are actually in Tibet.

The lake sits at an elevation of 14,270 feet (4350 meters) so it’s not exactly the place for a warm swim. Instead you come for the solitude and the beautiful shades of blue in the lake and sky.

The lake is ~100 miles from Leh one of the main cities in Ladakh so the drive can take over 4 hours with the windy mountains roads.

Great place for landscape photography!

11. Kamshet, near Mumbai

Less than 70 miles from the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, you can find some quaint villages with mud thatched houses. You can also find a paraglider’s paradise.

Kamshet is an offbeat place where beginning-to-experienced paragliders can take off over the beautiful forests and hills and you can see for miles . You can also go hiking through mountain passes and explore first and third-century caves like Karla caves, Bhaja caves, and Bedsa caves.

10. Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Delhi

Delhi is one of the largest and most populated cities in India, and many people will want to see the historic Red Fort in Old Delhi. However if you want to see the even more ancient origins of the city then take a walking tour through the Mehrauli Archaeological Park.

Here you can find 440 monuments from as early as the 10th-century up until the British colonial times. You can find secret tombs, abandoned mosques and ancient stepwells that were once the drinking and swimming holes of the people.

Bring your camera and come early in the morning for the best photos!

9. Gavi, near Kerala

Kerala is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India, known for peaceful houseboat rides through the backwaters. However, one of the most unexplored places in the beautiful village of Gavi.

Gavi is a part of the Ranni Reserve Forest and has many natural wonders to delight you . You can find local flowers and trees. You can also see the Periyar Tiger Reserve and take a jeep through a thick forest to see elephants, bears, sambars, barking deer and elusive tigers.

Come in November to mid-January for the best climate.

8. Majuli, Assam

majuli assam

Taking a houseboat in Kerala is such a popular tourist attraction, and many people recommend it. However, if you want to try something with less tourists, you can check out a world within a world on Majuli.

Majuli is the world’s largest inhabited river island and sits on the commanding Brahmaputra River in Assam in North India. Come to ride a bicycle through the lush green landscape, visit the Hindu Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries, or go bird watching.

7. Pichavaram Mangrove Forest, Tamil Nadu

Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal is the largest mangrove forest in the world and it also gets a large number of tourists each year. However, what most people don’t know is that the Pichavaram mangrove forest is the second largest mangrove forest and is also very beautiful.

Pichavaram mangrove forest has over 3,000 acres, with 4,400 canals that you can explore by boat. It’s like entering another world as you are surrounded by thick mangroves for as far as you can see.

6. Maheshwar, Central India

maheshwar

If you’re looking forward to visiting the bustling spiritual city of Varanasi, yet you want a place that’s more off-the-beaten-path, then try Maheshwar.

Maheshwar is known as the Varanasi of Central India and is situated along the banks of the Narmada River. The temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer or transformer in Hinduism, and there is an active spiritual life here.

You can walk along the mountain passes or ghats, take a boat ride on the river, or head to a Baneshwar temple. The area is also known for weaving and you can buy some beautiful crafts here for gifts.

5. Pondicherry, South India

Pondicherry

The locals call it Pondy, and it’s a unique city in South India along the beach. It is a former French colony and has an Arc de Triomphe-style memorial, a Place de la Republique, and a statue of Joan of Arc.

Pondicherry has elegant architecture and laidback beaches. You can find French foods like baguettes and games like boules.

It’s a wonderful place to get a guesthouse near the beach and relax. For digital nomads: They also have a computer store that can fix your Macbook 🙂

4. Kalap, North India

There are many beautiful villages in the Himalayas that attract adventure seekers and spiritual pilgrims. However, most tourists will not venture as far as the tiny village of Kalap, which is almost 300 miles from New Delhi.

Kalap has been called India’s Most Remote Village , which is saying a lot. It is in the upper Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and sits at 7,500 ft altitude. You can find the homes nestled in deodar forests and virgin pine trees, and overlooking the gorge of the River Supin.

You can’t drive a car into Kalap, you must park at Netwar and then hike for either 6 hours in the summer or 4 hours in the winter. The terrain is not difficult but please watch out for falling rocks. 😬

It’s a wonderful place to meet local people who have lived away from the comforts of the modern world their whole lives. You can also enjoy the pristine beauty of a village in the mountains.

3. Kannur, Northern Kerala

theyyam

Kerala has a number of beautiful populated beaches but if you’d prefer something more secluded, then try the small town of Kannur.

Kannur is known for quiet beaches, handloom weaving, and mysterious maxed spirit possession theyyam rituals. It’s the perfect place to rent a room in a laidback beach house and explore the interesting local culture. Or spend your time at the beach or driving along the beach on a motorcycle.

2. Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu

Tiruvannamalai

Within a 4-hour taxi ride of Chennai, you can find an ashram where the modern sage Ramana Maharshi used to teach. He actually came here as a boy, had an experience of his true nature, then wore a loincloth and sat around on Mount Arunachala for the rest of his life 🙂

Tiruvannamalai is a Hindu pilgrimage town, yet the Sri Ramana Ashram draws a significant number of spiritual seekers . The town is built around the beautiful Mountain Arunachala and every month people come from around India to walk around it during the full moon.

If you want a quiet spiritual experience, it’s a great place to come because you can rent a cheap room, eat delicious foods and be left alone. There are enough tourists that there are plenty of accommodations and services and retreats, yet it’s a small enough place it doesn’t have the typical tourist frustrations.

1. Kartik Swami Temple, North India

The Kartik Swami Temple is located near Kanak Chauri village in the state of Uttarakhand which is in North India. To get to the temple, you must hike less than 2 miles from the village where you will be witness to the stunning beauty of the remote Himalayan mountains.

The temple is dedicated to the Lord Kartikeya, the eldest son of the Hindu God Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati. Bring your cold weather gear because this temple is among the snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas and is set on top of a ridge at over 10,000 feet (3050 meters).

Pilgrims do come to visit the ancient shire but the path is tricky. If you persist, you will be rewarded with temple bells, mantras being chanted and a whole lot of peace.

Whether you've seen enough of India's most popular destinations  or are simply keen to discover some less-touristy spots , there are some remarkable places to visit in India that are off the beaten track. Read on to find out lesser-known alternatives to well-trodden places.

Instead of Rajasthan: Kutch Region of Gujarat

Sharell Cook

The vast Kutch region of Gujarat is sometimes described as India's "Wild West." Much of Kutch consists of seasonal wetlands known as the Great Rann of Kutch (famous for its salt desert) and smaller Little Rann of Kutch (famous for its Wild Ass Sanctuary ). The region's handicraft villages are also a highlight.

Plan your trip with this comprehensive Kutch travel guide .

Instead of Leh and Ladakh: Spiti in Himachal Pradesh

Spiti/Getty Images

When it comes to high altitude desert in India, you've most likely head of Leh and Ladakh. But what about lesser-known Spiti? Bordered by Ladakh in the north, Tibet to the east, Kinnaur to the southeast, and the Kullu Valley to the south, Spiti has an average height of around 12,500 feet above sea level. This stark alpine desert land is scattered with small villages and monasteries, and enclosed by soaring peaks crowned with snow.

Find out the details in this ultimate Spiti travel planner.

Instead of the Kerala Backwaters: Majuli in Assam

Amar Grover/Getty Images

Majuli, the world’s largest inhabited river island, sits amidst the imposing Brahmaputra River in Assam. A world within a world, ride bicycles through the fertile green landscape, go bird watching, and visit Hindu Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries.  La Maison de Anand is a quaint bamboo stilt house homestay there, designed by a French architect who fell in love with Majuli. The Majuli Ras Mahotsav festival, held in mid-November each year, celebrates the life of Lord Krishna with plays, folk dances, puppets, masks, songs and dance.

This Majuli Island travel guide has more information.

Instead of Darjeeling: Kalimpong in West Bengal

PRABHASROY/Getty Images

Kalimpong is the perfect solution for escaping the crowds at Darjeeling . This peaceful town is perched on a remote ridge in the Himalayan foothills, about two-and-a-half-hour hours away from Darjeeling, near the Sikkim border. It offers a diverse mix of attractions—Buddhist monasteries, historic churches, local markets, villages, nature trails, tea gardens, and a superb view of Mount Kangchenjunga (the third highest peak in the world).

Plan your trip with this complete guide to visiting Kalimpong.

Instead of Varanasi: Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh

Often referred to as the " Varanasi of Central India", the small holy town of Maheshwar is set along the banks of the Narmada River and is also dedicated to Lord Shiva. Stroll along the ghats (steps leading to the water), watch local life, and take a sunset boat ride along the river and out to Baneshwar temple. If you want to splurge you can be a guest of the royal Holkar family at their Ahilya Fort hotel , which they've established in part of their palace. Maheshwar is also renowned for its weaving industry.

Read more in this essential guide to Maheshwar

Instead of Hampi: Mandu in Madhya Pradesh

Mandu can be visited in conjunction with Maheshwar, as it's only a couple of hours away. This abandoned city from the Mughal era is commonly labeled the Hampi of Central India because of its treasure trove of ruins. They're spread over a 2,000 foot-high hilltop and enclosed by a 28-mile (45-kilometer) stretch of wall. In recognition of its importance, in 2018, the Indian government jointly named Mandu as Best Heritage City in India (along with Ahmedabad in Gujarat ) at the National Tourism Awards.

Read more in this essential guide to Mandu .

Instead of Fatehpur Sikri: Champaner-Pavagadh in Gujarat

These days, the abandoned 16th century Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri near Agra is overrun by touts. A lesser-known, short-lived, capital that's also a UNESCO World Heritage site is Champaner-Pavagadh , situated about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Ahmedabad. Notably, it's the only unaltered and complete Islamic pre-Mughal city in India. Its historical treasures, dating back to between the 8th and 14th centuries, include a hill fortress, palaces, places of worship (Jama Masjid is one of the most spectacular mosques in Gujarat), residential areas, reservoirs, and step wells.

Instead of Jaisalmer: Osian in Rajasthan

 iannomadav/Getty Images

Osian is perfect for those who want to avoid the commercial desert tourism in Jaisalmer and have a peaceful camel safari experience. This small town is situated about an hour and a half north of Jodhpur , on the way to Bikaner. Its surrounded by several sand dunes. Intricately carved stone temples, dating from the 8th to 11th centuries when Osian was an important trading center, are an added attraction. The main one is a Sun Temple dedicated to Surya the Sun god. Stay at Osian Sand Dunes Resort and Camp or Reggie's Camel Camp .

Instead of the Sundarbans: Pichavaram Mangroves in Tamil Nadu

You can be forgiven if you didn't know about Pichavaram mangrove forest, despite it being one of the world's largest mangrove jungles (the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal is the largest). After all, it's not on the tourist trail. However, this remarkable and fascinating place is definitely worth visiting. Spread over nearly 3,000 acres, it has 4,400 big and small canals that can be explored by boat. In addition, Chidambaram Nataraj Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva in his dancing form) is not far away.

This guide to visiting Pichavaram mangrove forest will help you plan your trip.

Instead of Varkala Beach: Kannur in Kerala

The small town of Kannur, in northern Kerala, is known for its secluded beaches, mysterious masked spirit-possession theyyam rituals , and hand loom weaving. The theyyam season runs from October until May and Kerala Tourism has a comprehensive calendar of theyyam events . There are some delightful, laid back (and inexpensive) beach houses in the Thottada beach area, such as Kannur Beach House , Waves Beach Resort, Chera Rock Beach House , and KK Heritage Homestay . Kannur district is also home to Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach. You can drive all the way along its vast stretch of sand.

Instead of Kanha National Park: Kawardha in Chhattisgarh

Courtesy of Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat

Thinking of visiting famous Kanha National Park but want to avoid the crowds and prefer nature over tiger spotting? Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat is a few hours drive away and has three atmospheric cottages nestled in the Maikal Hills, close to the ancient Bhoramdeo temple complex. The owner is a native of the area and has an excellent rapport with the indigenous villagers, who belong to the Baiga and Gond tribes. Guests can visit their tolas (villages) and colorful weekly haats (tribal markets). Treks into the jungle are offered, and the butterflies, birds and wildlife are exceptional. It's also possible to go on longer treks into the Maikal Hills, staying in villagers' homes.

Instead of Manali: Kalap in Uttarakhand

Anand Sankar

Manali in Himachal Pradesh attracts plenty of adventure seekers, who come to enjoy its surrounding village trekking trails. However, to go where very few tourists have gone before, head to Kalap, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of northern Uttarakhand. This tiny village is not accessible by road or rail (you'll need to trek, and porters and mules are provided). A responsible tourism project was started there in 2013 to help the villagers generate an income. You can stay with them and experience their way of life, as well as spend time in the pristine surroundings.

Instead of Nagarhole in Karnataka: Pollachi in Tamil Nadu

Vinod Kumar M/Getty Images

Nagarhole National Park is one of the top national parks in India . It gets its name from the snake-like river that winds its way through it. However, the government-run minibus safaris through the park tend to be rather disappointing and noisy and private safaris are costly. Alternatively, Pollachi in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu is an unexplored place teaming with wildlife, plus Anamalai Tiger Reserve is in the area. The annual Kongu Nadu Cattle Festival, held in January, is also a highlight. Thadam Experiences offers customized trips including bird watching, nature walks, boat rides, village and farm visits, and tea tours. Grass Hills Tours and Travels is also a reputable company that specializes in local nature and wildlife tourism. Stay at Coco Lagoon Resort , or the cheaper Coconut County Farm Stay.

Instead of Hyderabad and Golconda: Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh

Aleksey Gavrikov/Getty Images

Golconda Fort near Hyderabad is one of the top forts in India . However, about seven hours south of the city are the ruins of another fort that hardly anyone is familiar with, despite the fact that it was possessed by many powerful rulers including the Chalukyas, Pemmasani Nayaks, Golconda Sultanate, Mughals (under Aurangzeb), and the British. Gandikota is a fort on a gorge in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The gorge is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of India. It's possible to kayak along the Penna River, hike along the gorge, and enjoy spectacular star-lit nights and sunrises over the canyon. Accommodations are limited in the area. If you don't want to stay at the Haritha hotel run by Andhra Pradesh Tourism or camp by the canyon, Royal County is the best option although it's an hour from Gandikota.

Instead of Goa: Maharashtra's Konkan Coast

North of Goa, across the border in Maharashtra, the Konkan Coast offers a bounty of beautiful beaches that are among the most pristine in the country. Delightfully off the tourist trail, they are devoid of much development and many are practically deserted. Inexpensive beachfront homestays are popping up in many places, and you'll get mouthwatering home-cooked coastal cuisine. If you'd prefer somewhere with more facilities yet still noncommercial, Gokarna in Karnataka is ideal.

places to visit for relaxation in india

India’s astonishing variety of sights has to be seen to be believed. Travelers have devoted lifetimes to exploring the famous places and forgotten corners of this incredible country, driven onwards by the certainty that there’s always more to see.

Mughal palaces, towering Hindu temples, mountain monasteries, lost kingdoms, cultured cities, and genteel hill stations in the foothills of the Himalayas all jostle for attention in a country that is proudly shaking off the legacy of colonialism and repositioning itself as a global superpower. With such incredible diversity on offer, there’s just one question – where do you start?

Well, our advice is to not take on too much during a single visit. Pick an area – the tropical south perhaps, or the northern plains, or the mountain valleys of the Himalayas – and give yourself time to pause and soak up the atmosphere as you work through your must-see list .

Wherever you go, you’re guaranteed a mind-expanding and exhilarating blast of color, soul-soaring splendor, earth-shaking history and moments of pure serenity. Equal parts magic and mayhem, this mix is what makes traveling to India such an intense and addictive experience.

While this was no easy list to compile, we’re proud to present our pick of the ten best places to visit in India.

1. Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Best for romantics and fans of Mughal history

At the top of everyone’s bucket list, the Taj Mahal is as glorious as people imagine it would be – a magnificent monument to lost love, executed in pearl-white marble. Views of the world’s most beautiful building framed by a Mughal archway or floating above the misty Yamuna River will be one of the defining moments of any trip to India.

But there’s more to the former Mughal capital than the Taj. Add on a couple of days so you can visit the architecturally stunning tomb of  Emperor Akbar , his rose-red sandstone former capital at Fatehpur Sikri and sprawling Agra Fort , one of India’s most epic fortifications. Thronged by millions of visitors, Agra is not always relaxing, but it’s eternally fascinating.

Close-up of a boatman holding oars on the Ganga River at night, Varanasi, India

2. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Best for intense spirituality

There are few places as beguiling and bewitching as the sacred Hindu city of Varanasi . Millennia-old death rituals play out daily at the cremation ghats that line the bank of the sacred River Ganges, while the maze-like alleyways of the nearby old town reveal dizzying surprises at every turn. We defy anyone to visit without experiencing some internal soul-searching about their place in the universe.

Be ready for some challenges. The hard-edged realities of life and death and the inequalities that continue to cause hardship for many in India are obvious on the streets of the world’s oldest living city. But there are also moments of gentleness – rise at dawn and wander the ghats (riverside steps) and you’ll see Varanasi at its most spiritual, with its attention focused on the sacred river, before the tourist bustle changes the mood.

Planning tip: The best way to appreciate Varanasi’s famous ghats is from a rowboat. Boatmen offer their services from first light at boat stations along the west bank of the Ganges, providing views of a riverfront that has changed only superficially in seven centuries.

3. Mumbai, Maharashtra

Best for urban explorers and Bollywood hopefuls

Mumbai is the perfect place to take the pulse of modern India. The most densely populated city in the subcontinent is home to Bollywood film stars, enterprising market vendors, bankers and executives rushing to work in offices, and fishing families who can trace their origins back to the days when this mighty metropolis was just a humble village.

To understand more about the disparities of life in contemporary Mumbai, take a socially responsible tour through the city’s huge and disadvantaged Dharavi district with Reality Tours & Travel ; 80% of the profits go back to social projects providing opportunities for those left behind by Mumbai’s push for success.

The city’s can’t-miss excursion is the boat trip to the 1500-year-old, UNESCO World Heritage-listed rock-cut temples of Elephanta Island , but fantastic street food is the city’s great leveler. Don’t leave without sampling Mumbai's signature snack, bhel poori – puffed rice and fried dough with lentils, onions, herbs and savory chutneys, best sampled on the beach at Chowpatty or Juhu.

Detour: With time to spare in Mumbai, head to the northern suburbs, where Sanjay Gandhi National Park protects a sprawl of dry forest, home to leopards, deer, monkeys and serene Buddhist cave temples.

View of Thikse Monastery and prayer rocks in Ladakh India

Best for an extraordinary taste of Tibet

In the far northwest of India, sheltered from the monsoon by the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the former Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh is culturally and geographically closer to western Tibet than anywhere in India. In this high-altitude moonscape, towering Tibetan monasteries melt into a landscape of barren rock and wind-sculpted hoodoos (don’t miss fabulous Hemis and Thiksey on the road linking Ladakh to Himachal Pradesh ).

Most visitors start in the atmospheric capital, Leh , before roaming to neighboring valleys for homestay treks and trips to view turquoise salt lakes and colorful masked dances at ancient monasteries. Ladakh wasn't touched by China’s Cultural Revolution, so this is perhaps the closest independent travelers can come to experiencing the original culture of Tibet.

Planning tip: Getting to Ladakh is half the fun. Flights run to Leh even in the depths of winter, but the most enjoyable way in is overland, by road from either Srinagar in Kashmir or Manali in Himachal Pradesh. Buses and shared 4WDs run as long as the passes are open from June to the end of September, or you can tackle the route on a rented Enfield motorcycle.

5. Kolkata, West Bengal

Best for culture vultures

The capital of colonial British India until 1911, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is India’s third-biggest metropolis and the country's intellectual and artistic capital. Spend a few days exploring the energetic bazaars, cultured museums and British-era landmarks, and you’ll soon fall in love with Kolkata’s irrepressible energy.

To really get to know Kolkata, sign up for a Bengali cooking course and visit the revered temple at Kalighat , where the goddess Kali is appeased with sacrifices. With more time to spare, book an overnight wildlife-watching tour to the nearby Sundarbans Tiger Reserve , a legendary stalking ground for royal Bengal tigers.

Planning tip: Try to time your visit to coincide with the festival of Durga Puja in September or October, when vividly colorful effigies of the goddess are displayed in pandals (ceremonial tents) all over the city.

6. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Best for desert drama

The desert state of Rajasthan shows India at its most romantic and soft-filtered. Expect a mirage of camel caravans, ornate palaces, mighty forts, turbaned traders and intense colors, set against a backdrop of shifting desert sands. It’s unbelievably photogenic, but also firmly on the tourist map, so expect to share the experience with a crowd.

The pink-sandstone monuments of Jaipur , the ice-white lakeside palaces of Udaipur , and views of blue-hued Jodhpur from its lofty fort are all stunning experiences, but the city that delivers the biggest jolt to the senses is Jaisalmer , seeming sculpted from the living rock of the desert.

Its tangled lanes, towering fortress and beautifully ornate haveli (traditional houses) could have been plucked from the pages of One Thousand and One Nights , and the surrounding desert is the evocative setting for overnight camel safaris.

Planning tip: While it is possible to stay inside the fortified city, visitor numbers are having an impact on Jaisalmer’s historic heart. We recommend staying outside the walls instead – there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses within strolling distance of the fort.

A traditional rice barge on the backwaters of Kerala (between Alappuzha and Kollam)

7. The Kerala Backwaters

Best for lovers of slow travel

After the dusty, densely populated northern plains, tropical South India offers a lusher, more laid-back travel experience. The quintessential trip here is a slow-paced canal cruise through the emerald-green backwaters of Kerala , a 900-mile network of languid, coconut-fringed waterways, offering views of an ever-changing tableaux of South Indian life.

Hire a traditional houseboat in Alappuzha for a multiday trip, then settle in for a succulent Keralan seafood curry prepared by your personal chef as the sunset blushes over shimmering waters and silhouetted palm fronds. Post-cruise, it’s just a short hop up the coast to historic Kochi (Cochin) , with its cantilevered fishing nets and Kathakali dance theaters.

8. Bodhgaya, Bihar

Best for budding Buddhists

As the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism (plus countless smaller faiths), India is defined by sacred geography. Even here, however, few places resonate more powerfully than the Bodhi tree where Prince Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment to become the Buddha (Awakened One).

The town that has grown up around this sacred spot is home to dozens of Tibetan and Southeast Asian–style temples and monasteries, with a busy program of Buddhist teachings and courses. It’s the ideal destination for any spiritual explorer.

To get a feel for Bodhgaya ’s rhythms, come early to the Mahabodhi complex and settle in beside chanting Tibetan pilgrims to meditate on the nature of impermanence. Travel experiences don’t get much more profound than this.

Planning tip: Bodhgaya is just one stop on the so-called "Buddhist circuit," taking in key locations from the life of the historical Buddha. Local buses run to nearby Rajgir, the site of one of the first Buddhist monasteries, and Nalanda's ancient Buddhist university complex.

9. Darjeeling, West Bengal

Best for a premium cup of tea with a view

Fanned by the cool breezes of the eastern Himalayas, surrounded by manicured tea estates and basking in front of epic Himalayan views, Darjeeling is easy to fall for.

For a perfect day, watch the dawn break over 8586m (20,169ft) Kangchenjunga, learn the difference between first-flush and white teas on a plantation tour, linger over an afternoon cuppa at the  Windamere Hotel , then learn about the Tibetan experience at the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre .

The classiest way to arrive is via the nostalgic, narrow-gauge toy train ; book tickets in advance and check to see if the steam service is running (the diesel train follows the same route, but has less charm). Don’t miss the Buddhist gompas (monasteries) dotted around the city. Below Darjeeling on the fringes of Ghum, historic Yiga Choeling Gompa has a special magic.

Planning tip: Darjeeling isn’t the only interesting stop in the area. Shared 4WDs buzz from Darjeeling to Kalimpong , another historic township with colorful Buddhist monasteries, Himalayan views and pretty flower nurseries.

Virupaksha temple view from Hemakuta hill at sunset in Hampi, Karnataka

10. Hampi, Karnataka

Best for a full immersion in history

Between the 14th and 16th centuries CE, the capital of the Vijayanagar empire at Hampi was home to half a million people, but this ancient metropolis was almost completely abandoned, leaving 3700 stone monuments scattered across a surreal plain of boulders.

This is a place to linger, strolling between the boulders to find carved masonry, forgotten shrines and the handsome remains of some of South India’s most dramatic stone temples.

Glance up as you wander and you’ll see rock climbers tackling bouldering routes using chisel marks made by ancient masons. Rent a motorcycle or scooter and you can roam further afield, taking in the hilltop temple marking the spot where the monkey god Hanuman first met Lord Rama.

Planning tip: Hampi is a short bus ride from the town of Hosapete – get here by overnight train from Goa’s beaches, historic Hyderabad or the cosmopolitan southern city of Bengaluru .

11. Arunachal Pradesh

Best for stepping off the map

Tucked away near Bangladesh, the eight Northeast States – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim – are India’s wild frontier. Until the 1990s, this region of rugged mountain valleys was mostly off-limits to foreigners, and visitor numbers are still small – people who travel here earn the right to call themselves proper explorers.

Sikkim is the most famous destination in the Northeast States, but we’d encourage you east towards the forested foothills and jagged mountains of Arunachal Pradesh , where tribal communities follow a diverse range of traditional belief systems, from the Buddhist Monpa people of Tawang to the animist Apatani people of the Ziro valley.

Planning tip: Travel takes a bit of effort in Arunachal Pradesh; you’ll need to apply for a permit to enter the state, and local transport is patchy. By far the easiest way to explore is with a chartered 4WD and driver (easily arranged in Guwahati in Assam).

Women sitting beside the sacred tank at Amritsar's Golden Temple

12. Amritsar, Punjab

Best for experiencing the power of devotion

India has pilgrimage destinations to spare, but few come close to the vibrant energy of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The most sacred site for the Sikh religion is a gleaming jewel box, floating in a mirror-like sacred pool, thronged day and night by an unbelievable mass of pilgrims. You don’t have to be spiritually inclined to feel its powerful rhythms.

Joining devotees at the Sri Harmandir Sahib – the gold-paneled shrine at the heart of the complex – is incredibly moving. Staying overnight in the pilgrims' hostels that flank the temple compound only adds to the intensity. A donation is much appreciated for accommodation if possible, though pilgrims of all means will be accommodated if space is available. You can also sit down for meals at the temple langar (kitchen), which provides cost-free nourishment to a staggering 100,000 people per day (again, a donation is appreciated if you have the means).

Planning tip: Don’t limit your explorations to the Golden Temple – the surrounding bazaars buzz with energy and atmosphere, with vendors selling everything from embroidered chappals (sliders) to brass and polished steel pots and pans.

13. Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka

Best for feeling like a Maharaja

The atmospheric South Indian city of Mysuru has multiple charms: towering temples, one of India’s most evocative marketplaces, and the almost impossibly extravagant crib that is Mysuru Palace , the ancestral home of the Wadiyar maharajas. No building conjures up the extravagant lives of India’s royal rulers quite so vividly – every room is a fantasy, every ornament an heirloom.

Around the palace are busy bazaars, rewarding museums and a string of Hindu temples in the classic Dravidian (Southern Indian) architectural style. Devote several days to wandering the streets, hiking up to the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hill and feasting on fiery vegetarian  thalis (plate meals) in Mysuru’s restaurants.

A large tiger walking over rocks in Bandhavgarh National Park

14. Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

Best for tiger encounters

The national parks of Madhya Pradesh are some of the best places on the planet to get close to royal Bengal tigers. Seeing one of these striped superstars loping out of the jungle will stay with you for a lifetime – as well as leaving you heartbroken at the thought of how few tigers still survive in the wild.

Everyone has their favorite tiger reserve, but we rate Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve near Jabalpur for the density of wildlife in its central Tala range. Around 70 tigers roam these dry forests, alongside leopards, monkeys, deer and gaur – India’s gigantic wild buffalo. There’s a high likelihood of sightings if you devote several days to 4WD safaris (elephant safaris should be avoided as riding can be harmful to these vulnerable animals).

Planning tip: The best time to see tigers is first thing in the morning – safaris start at 5:30am to catch tigers before they stake out a shady spot in the undergrowth to sleep through the heat of the day.

15. Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Best for religious splendor

South India's Hindu temples are a joyous celebration of the divine, decorated inside and out with vividly colorful depictions of deities and supernatural beings, both fearsome and sublime. In the southern city of Madurai , the towering gopurams (gateway towers) of the Meenakshi Amman Temple provide a three-dimensional guide to the main deities of the Hindu pantheon.

The current temple was constructed in the 17th century, but the site has been sacred to Meenakshi, the queen of the Pandya kingdom and an incarnation of the goddess Parvati, for at least 2000 years. Come early in the morning to watch sunrise bring the temple to life, then pop to the nearest branch of Murugan Idli Shop for some of the south’s best idli (steamed rice and lentil cakes).

Detour: A short bus or train ride from Madurai, Tiruchirappalli – aka Trichy – is another top spot for temple enthusiasts. The looming Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the world’s largest Hindu shrines, covering 155 acres (63 hectares) and topped by 21 deity-encrusted towers. More temples crown the rocky outcrop at the heart of the city, offering epic views over the rooftops.

Top 10 wellness destinations in India that create healing for mind, body and soul

Wellness destinations in india are synonymous with mental relaxation and peace and figure among the topmost priorities for people electing to travel in 2022..

Wellness revolves around a sense of well-being that results from tending to the needs of your body and mind, with several different touchpoints that ease the mind-body complex with a sense of rejuvenation.

Wellness destinations in India - Langza Himachal Pradesh

So what goes into the selection of good wellness destinations in India? It appears that rich nature, water bodies, pleasant weather, peace and tranquility, yoga, spiritual practices, outdoor activities, good food, and wine are reasons that help travellers select a wellness destination.

While spas and fitness were important in the past in deciding on a wellness destination, the current approach is definitely more holistic and healing therapies like nature, water bodies, tranquility, and outdoor activities are an important consideration in 2022, post-pandemic, in considering a wellness destination.

City lights, pollution, and noise also disturb the emotional balance of people. When surrounded constantly by such an urban ambiance, life in cities gives off a negative aura. This aura affects emotions making people more pessimistic or aggressive and people like to take a short break to rejuvenate and feel well balanced.

Some of India’s best wellness destinations in India to heal your mind and body are:

Langza, himachal pradesh.

Langza is one of the most beautiful villages not in Himachal Pradesh but in India. The name means the village of the Gods. One would give up everything just to live here. Residing here is truly a gift from the Gods.

Langza is situated on a plateau at an altitude of 4400 metres. One of the most notable attractions is the Buddha statue just watching over the valley silently each day and night. The beauty of this village cannot be captured by any camera, nothing can do justice to what the human eye captures. It is completely another world.

Rishikesh, Uttrakhand

Rishikesh is the spiritual capital of India. The sacred river Ganga embodies energy and tranquility as it flows over rocks and riverbeds. The next day goes to Kaudiyala which is only a few km from Rishikesh to indulge yourself in some outdoor activities like river rafting. Heartbeat races and adrenaline rush are yours for the taking – just like the river. Next, relax your mind and body as you sit by the banks of the river, do some yoga, visit an ashram or experience an Aarti and watch the sunset over this ancient land.

Go on an excursion from Rishikesh to Chilla. In Chilla visit the Rajaji National Park. Stay alert for warning calls given by Sambhar Deer, this means a tiger is nearby. If you spot a tiger, then keep an eye out for elephants too. The magnificent beast goes at a steady pace enjoying eating shoots along the way. After that try some north Indian cuisine in Chhottivalas for a hearty meal.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Wellness destinations in India - Varanasi Uttar Pradesh

Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest living cities. It is a fascinating and colourful place, where many small alleys hold surprises for all. It is one of the holiest cities and the sacred river “The Ganga” passes through this city. At more than 100+ ghats the pilgrims come and wash away their sins by bathing in the Ganga.

Why is this place is so significant and auspicious? It is believed that people who die here are offered Moksha ” liberation from the cycle of life and death”.

Manikarnika Ghat is one of the most famous ghats but is not for the faint-hearted. Thousands of dead bodies are given last rites and burnt on wood pyres. Every night a ritual takes place, where many pilgrims come and watch. The night is lit up by the thousands of candles, held by the priest offering their prayers to the river Ganga.

When it’s time for the city to wake up, there is a sense of peace and calmness sitting near ghats, and watching the river flow forever and ever.

Kovalam, Kerala

Wellness destinations in India - Kovalam Kerala

Kovalam is perhaps the best spot to carry comfort to your body, psyche, and soul. Because of the development of plenty of restorative plants and spices, you will get credible Ayurvedic treatment here. Focus on your psychological and actual wellbeing, and book yourself a loosening-up Ayurvedic session in God’s own country.

This National award-winning Ayurveda town is the supreme spot for you to rejuvenate. Encircled by rich green vegetation and close to the well-known Kovalam Beach, this town offers Ayurvedic massages and healing therapies including restoration treatment, detoxification, weight reduction, and relieving stress in a serene climate. You can likewise practice yoga, meditation or go for a long stroll to partake in the wonderful scenic views around.

Divar Island, Goa

Divar Island is one of those destinations that we all strive to go to with our friends in our lifetime, and we should make it a reality. The charm of the island is as authentic as it was in the 16th century when it was discovered. This pint-size place will fill your body with energy and joy because of its serene calm and raw beauty.

There are plenty of beach activities and water sports to take part in. Goa also offers lots of retreats and spas which give you a relaxing time, soothing your mind and body. The most beautiful sites lie on the soft sandy beaches lined with coconut and palm trees.

Divar Island is one of the most beautiful places in Goa. To think that such a place exists in this state, where clubbing is a major activity is a surprise. This place is pristine with dense forests and a small crystal clear lagoon. It is a great getaway place from the hustle-bustle of the mainland.

Built on an island on the Betwa river, the Orchha Fort is an architectural wonder that holds several beautiful temples and palaces like Jahangir Mahal, Raj Mahal, and the famous Rai Praveen Mahal.

This medieval town situated along the Betwa river is less crowded and is a great gateway to the state. As the sun sets the whole town feels like it belongs to another time and that at any moment its historical figures can come alive.

The reflection of the sun just adds to the golden glow of the ancient castles and you can choose to just sit on a nearby hillock and imbibe the evening charm. Even if you don’t indulge in any activity you will get lost in your thoughts. The surroundings are such that you will feel refreshed. As you enter the night you can listen to the silence speaking of the new tomorrow.

If you want to step into the healing of the great outdoors, go for a thrill and a spill as you experience river rafting in the Betwa river or go for a wildlife safari at Orchha wildlife park or take a stroll in the tranquil Phool Bagh, an ancient garden which holds the Badgir Sawan Bhadon towers built to provide a cooling effect to the gardens.

The water ventilation is further enhanced by a beautiful fountain and another palace called Chandan Katora.

Hemkund sahib and valley of flowers, uttrakhand.

This beautiful place is one of the holiest Sikh shrines, one would understand that the 10th Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh meditated on his past birth in this heavenly place. Imagine seeing your reflection into the pristine “Hemkund” lake at the base of Saptshringi lake.

Wellness destinations in India - Valley of flowers, Uttrakhand

A legend that goes by is that Lord Lakshamana regained his vitality by meditating near the banks of the lake after the war. A temple has been said to have been built at the place where Lakshmana meditated.

If you want to see something you can’t forget, prepare for a trek to the Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Blessed with beautiful rare alpine flowers and exotic Himalayan flora, in the West Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, the trek through the Valley of Flowers winds its way through dense forests, along the flowing waters of the fresh Pushpawati river, and one can traverse meadows and valleys, as one crosses charming wood and stone bridges, waterfalls and even glaciers along the way.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts

F rom the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.

“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”

Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”

While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting.

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."

Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits.

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day.

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms.

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins.

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.

Since their settlement headed by Dalai Lama, McLeod Ganj has become a vibrant dwelling resonating the Tibetan culture the ancient religion of Buddhism.

Discipline is a key factor in getting the most success out of such retreats. The retreat aims at avoiding all sources of distraction that one faces in daily life. This is why the visitor is made to distance themselves from TV, mobile, WiFi and help the person in understanding their true self and finding inner peace.

3. Vipassana International Academy, Igatpuri

Vippasana

Vipassana means “to see things as they are” and it differs from mindful meditation. While meditation usually focuses on awareness using a mantra, Vipassana demands non-reaction.  Vipassana enables us to experience peace and harmony by purifying the mind, freeing it from suffering and the deep-seated causes of suffering.

At Igatpuri, one can learn this by attending a 10-day course formulated by Dr.S.N.Goenka at the world’s largest Vipassana Meditation Centre. With a rigorous schedule and a will to gain inner peace, one can find themselves truly transformed after the retreat. Usually with a 2-month waiting list, if you are planning to make a visit here, planning well in advance in much encouraged.

During one of the days of the retreat, there is a discourse held which explains the science behind Vipassana and stresses on the fact that it does not have any religious association; contrary to popular belief.

4. Dhamma Bodhi, Bodh Gaya

Dhamma Bodhi

It is well known that Gauthama Buddha first obtained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, Bihar. Hence, visiting the Dhamma Bodhi can also be fascinating to history buffs. At Dhamma Bodhi, Vipassana meditation is widely taught under the guidance of S.N.Goenka. 10-day courses generally on the first and the 16 th day of every month and the classes can consist of 80 students at a time.

At Bodh Gaya, the MahaBodhi Temple Complex houses a Bodhi tree where one can escape from the hustle-bustle of the city life and find peace and tranquillity at the same place as once, the Buddha did.

5. Ashiyana Yoga Retreat, Goa

Ashiyana

Widely popular for its nightlife and party scenes, Goa also houses one of the country’s best yoga retreats at the untouched and pristine Mandrem Beach. Those with a penchant for beaches, luscious greenery, hammocks with the added advantage of learning yoga professionally should pay a visit to this retreat. Its tranquillity has consistently left its guests coming back for more regardless of a variety of other options to choose from.

Unlike other meditation retreats where strict vegetarianism is prevalent, at Ashiyana, chicken and fish are served few times of the week and the vegetarian food is not bland. Visitors can also indulge in the spa services and relax at a number of quiet spots within the locale. The rooms are eco-friendly and one can choose accommodation from their three choices; the tree houses, eco-lodges and stone houses.

Osho

The one place in India where meditation is combined with the teachings of Buddha and the luxurious state of the art infrastructure is at the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune . Retreat visitors can choose between living at the Osho Guesthouse and different Living In programs; suitable to their choices. At the Osho Multiversity, one can be found in the company of several others seeking to gain inner peace while being within a remarkable architectural structure. Apart from mediation, the resort offers its visitors an array of activities which encourages a cultural syncretism. Getting here has become easier as visitors can choose between flying to Pune, embarking a train journey and getting there by bus/car; thanks to an efficient transport system within the city.

7. Art of Living Ashram, Bangalore

Artofliving

Enclosed within a 65-acre sprawling green land at the top of Panchagiri Hills, Bangalore with organic farms around the area, The Art of Living ashram is the perfect place for anyone who wants to take a few days or even hours away from the humdrum city life.

Offering courses based on a visitor’s knowledge of yoga/meditation, the entry-level programs are Sudarshan Kriya. “Happiness” programs and the Sri Sri Yoga & Meditation. Sri Sri Yoga is a 10-hour workshop that is spread over five days and is especially useful for beginners. This is different from Vipassana as the participant is encouraged to focus on a mantra and upon doing so the mind and the nervous system are made to reach a moment of relaxation.

Guests can also truly experience the ashram by using its facilities like the Ayurveda Hospital, Radha Kunj (a beautiful garden), Sumeru Mantap and for a unique experience of taking care of cows by visiting the Goshala.

8.  Dandapani- Enstasy

places to visit for relaxation in india

Kerala’s most coveted tourist spot is its backwaters. One of the best places for this is Kumarakom where India’s longest lake, Lake Vembanad, is located. Enstasy, the luxurious meditation retreat is scheduled to be held at the Kumarakom Lake Resort. It is an eight-day10  program for people from around the world to learn and experience meditation while living amid a lush tropical scenery. At the treat, one will study meditation based on ancient Hindu teachings and is a two part breakdown. The first four days will be spent in studying and practising meditation and the following four days are aimed at reflection, relaxation and excursions to carefully selected hideaways.

9. Isha Yoga and Meditation

Isha FOundation

On the foothills of Velliangiri Mountains, Coimbatore at the Isha Yoga Centre is a dedicated area for mediation called Dhyanlinga. The architecture of this structure has been carefully planned to keep in mind ancient traditions and using modern technology at the same time. An excerpt from their website will show readers what they can expect from this retreat.

“ It does not ascribe to any particular belief or faith. It does not require any pooja or worship. Just sitting silently for a few minutes within the sphere of Dhyanlinga is enough to make even those unaware of meditation, experience a state of deep meditativeness….”

An interesting architectural feature of the dome in which the meditation is to take place, is that it was built without the use of steel, cement or concrete but with brick and mortar which were then stabilized with lime, sand, alum and herbal additives which are meant to last for more than 5000 years without any dissipation.

10. Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry

Aurobindo Ashram

Set up in the year 1926 by Aurobindo Ghosh, one of India’s greatest philosopher poets, Sri Aurobindo Ashram has been one of the most famous meditation destinations in South India. The philosophy of its founder which was deeply rooted in yoga inspired a number of followers including a Parisian musician called Mirra Alfassa. Under her guidance, Auroville or the ‘City of Dawn’ was set up and witnesses hundreds of disciples meditating around the Matri Mandir every month. This Ferrero-rocher shaped building requires a prior booking in case one wants to meditate inside the building. The architecture of the building is one of its key attributes; there is a crystal in the centre of the meditation area upon which a lone ray of sunshine passes through and gives a spectacular visual display. It is advisable to make a trip to Auroville for more than one day and not club it with your trip to Pondicherry because the experience in Auroville is one of its kind.
