Luggage and Baggage Rules for Taking a Cruise (How Much Can I Bring?)

If you’re a first-time cruiser, you might have a number of questions about what you can — and can’t — bring for a cruise. The good news? The rules surrounding cruise luggage are far simpler and more straightforward than what you’ll find on a flight .

Luggage carts with bags

In fact, you can think of the rules surrounding your luggage as more similar to traveling to a hotel versus traveling on a flight.

Still, if you’re taking a cruise, chances are you’re going to pack a little more than a toothbrush. So you no doubt have a few questions about luggage and baggage on the ship.

We’ve rounded up answers to some of the most common questions…

In This Article...

How much luggage can I bring on a cruise?

The best news about packing is that there is no (reasonable) limit on how much you can bring on a cruise . Most cruise lines “encourage” or “suggest” each passenger to limit luggage to two suitcases, each one less than 50 pounds. In addition, you can also bring carry-on luggage (more on that in a moment). We’ve never seen or heard of people being turned away for bring too many suitcases.

While there are no strict restrictions on your checked baggage, you should keep a few common sense items in mind.

First, know that you have to get all your luggage to and from the cruise ship. If you are flying, that may mean extra fees for extra bags. And even if you are driving to the cruise terminal, you still have to carry (or arrange for someone else to carry) all that luggage.

We encourage people to pack reasonably. There is no harm in wearing the same thing twice during a cruise — many others will be doing just that. As well, every ship has laundry service if you need it.

If you are taking more than one piece of luggage and one carry-on to take a week-long cruise, then you are likely overpacking.

Are there baggage fees on cruises?

Unlike airlines, there are no baggage fees for the luggage you bring on a cruise. Bring what you want, as there is no extra charge.

That’s good news, but if you are flying to the port, remember that you could be charged by the airline for bags you bring on the plane. That’s another reason it’s smart to pack light if you can.

Are there restrictions on what I can bring?

Two bags taken on a cruise

Of course there are rules about what you can’t bring. You can’t bring weapons such as guns or long knives on board. If it’s even questionable (such as pepper spray), it’s best to just leave it at home. Scissors are also restricted.

More importantly, except for lighters, you can’t bring anything dealing with fire. Fire is the biggest risk on board a ship. For that reason, irons are restricted, as are candles and incense. Flammable liquids are also prohibited. If you think it could start a fire, it’s best to leave it at home.

Cruise lines also have restrictions on alcohol that you can bring on board. Most will let you bring some sort of wine or champagne, but only in small quantities. Beer or hard liquor are almost never allowed. Click here to read more about bringing alcohol on a cruise .

Here is a general list of things you can’t bring on the cruise that you might be wondering about:

  • Drugs (including marijuana and CBD , even if legal in the state you are sailing from)
  • Explosives or fireworks
  • Flammable items
  • Beer/liquor
  • Heat-producing appliances (curling irons/hair dryers are ok)
  • Blades longer than 4″
  • Hoverboards

What happens if I bring something that I’m not supposed to?

Accidentally pack something that’s against the rules? Expect it to be removed from your bag when found — that includes alcohol, weapons, or other items.

Depending on the cruise line policy and what the item is, it may be held and returned to you at the end of the cruise or it may just be confiscated. For that reason, we suggest being very careful about what you pack to avoid running afoul of the luggage rules.

If it’s an illegal substance that’s found, you may be getting a visit from law enforcement.

Can I bring a curling iron, hair straightener or a hair dryer?

In the humidity of a cruise, some people have hair that goes wild. We understand.

The good news is that while clothes irons aren’t allowed, you can bring things like a straightener, hair dryer or curling iron. You should definitely be careful, and not forget to unplug them when not in use (in fact, room stewards may do so if they see it left unattended when servicing your room).

As for hair dryers, you can bring one from home, but cruise cabins have these built in, similar to a hotel. They are small, but can get the job done for a few days of vacation. There is no real reason to take up the luggage space, unless you just can’t live without your specific hair dryer.

Can I bring food on a cruise?

If you have special dietary restrictions and want to bring special foods, then it’s best to contact the cruise line to get all the ins and outs of how to bring your food. One nice thing is that cruise lines can meet almost any dietary restriction you might have.

If you’re simply wanting to bring some snacks, then you are welcome to do so . One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a cruise will go to several different countries. That means customs officials worry about things like foreign pests and disease.

For that reason, any food you bring on board needs to be pre-processed, packaged, and unopened . You can’t bring homemade items. You also want to avoid fresh fruit and vegetables.

Does the “3-1-1” liquids rule apply to cruises?

The “3-1-1” rule is ubiquitous in airports. It’s the rule that you can only bring liquids three ounces or less in a one quart plastic bag, with one bag per passenger. The rule is a thorn in the side of many travelers.

For everyone’s sanity, this rule does not apply to cruise ships.  Bring shampoo from home or a bottle of hairspray or a full-sized tube of toothpaste. Just keep in mind that if you have to fly to the port, then you’ll still have to meet the guidelines on liquids for air travel.

Can I bring alcohol in my bags when boarding?

If you want to bring beer or liquor on your cruise, then the bad news is that these aren’t allowed to be brought on ships. If they are found, they will be removed and discarded. (You can buy alcohol in ports of call and bring it home, but it’s held for you until the end of the cruise.)

The good news? Most cruise lines do allow you to bring a bottle or two of wine or champagne .

The amount varies among cruise lines, but it’s usually one bottle (750 mL) per adult in a cabin. When you bring this on, just keep it in your carry-on luggage. You don’t want to put it in checked luggage where it can possibly be broken.

Can I bring non-alcoholic drinks on a cruise?

Yes, but only on some cruise lines. Major lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean have more relaxed rules that allow you to bring small quantities (usually 12 or fewer) drinks on board with you. Norwegian does not allow you to bring aboard drinks.

So if you want to have a Coke or juice and don’t want to buy it on the ship, then you can bring it with you as you board.

Note that not every cruise line allows this, so you’ll want to see if the specific rules for your line. We have a list of cruise line policies around non-alcoholic drinks here .

What about rules for carry-on luggage for my cruise?

When you arrive at the port, you will check your large luggage (unless you want to carry it all on). This luggage will be carted off, X-rayed, put aboard the ship, and then delivered to your room later that day. That entire process will take several hours.

For that reason, passengers are encouraged to bring some sort of carry-on that has anything you might need for the first few hours on the cruise ship — travel documents, passports, medications, allowed alcohol, toothbrush, your swimsuit, and maybe even a change of clothes for dinner.

This carry-on bag will stay with you and be run through an X-ray machine in the terminal, similar to an airport. You will then keep it with you as you board the ship.

Do I have to check bags over a certain size?

Luggage for a cruise

No. There is no rule that you have to check luggage. However, keep in mind that you will have to lug your carry-on items around the ship until your room is ready. If you check in early, that could be a couple of hours. Even a small bag can be a nuisance after that long.

There are some “official” restrictions on carry-on sizes, but we’ve found them to be less strict than with an airline and rarely enforced. As long as you can safely and easily move your bag, it should be ok to board with.

Will my bags be searched on a cruise ship?

All baggage brought on board the ship will be X-rayed. When you go through security you will set your carry-on bags on the x-ray machine like you’d find at an airport. Checked luggage is also X-rayed behind the scenes. Usually further inspection isn’t required unless the security staff finds something dangerous or prohibited.

If something is found that’s against the rules you may have to meet with ship security or find a note in the back saying it’s been removed.

When will I get my bags after checking them?

When you check your bags at the cruise terminal, they are taken, X-rayed, and then loaded onto the ship.

From there, the cruise line staff delivers your luggage directly to your stateroom the evening of your first night. Usually this will take a few hours. Often bags are delivered before dinnertime, but not always.

That’s why it’s important that you bring anything you might need for your first night in your carry-on, including what you plan to wear to dinner. While most people will have their bags within a few hours of boarding, it may be until later that you get yours.

Can I bring CBD or marijuana in my luggage?

CBD is now seemingly everywhere, and rules around marijuana have relaxed tremendously (including full legalization in a number of states).

That said, these items are not allowed on cruise ships . Cruise lines follow federal law instead of state laws. As well, the items are prohibited in a number of countries, so the cruise line restricts you from bringing CBD or marijuana to comply with rules in any port you might visit.

It’s not a good idea to try and sneak them on either as we’ve seen stories of local law enforcement in some countries detaining passengers for these items. As well, some lines like Carnival have started to use drug sniffing dogs to find smuggled items.

Where do I put my suitcase in the cabin after I unpack?

There’s no arguing that cruise cabins are small and you might be wondering where to put an empty suitcase so that you aren’t constantly tripping over it. Fortunately cruise cabins do a great job of maximizing space.

There are closets in every cabin that can hold a suitcase or two. You can also store them under the bed so that you don’t have to worry about it taking up valuable space.

hello, my wife and I are going on our first cruise after 15 years, can we bring alcohol on the cruise and if so how much? and should we put it in our back pack or secured well in our suit cases. we are going Carnival. thank you

Carnival allows one regular sized bottle of wine or champagne per person.

Check out this article for more details: https://www.cruzely.com/cruise-line-alcohol-policies/

Does norweigian accept wheelchairs

Can you bring a miniature blender on board?

I don’t know where it would be against the rules, but it might get some funny looks.

Is locking your suitcase a bad idea?

I’d suggest not locking it just to keep things simple. If there is something valuable, just bring it as a carry on.

If I wanted to keep my luggage with me and not check it can I do that? I just want my items when I get to my room. Also can I roll it off at the end of the cruise so I do not have to wait for my luggage?

I will be on a Carnival cruise

Absolutely. In fact, that’s what a large portion of people do as they are the first to debark.

Can I bring a skateboard to use when on shore trips?

Do they have free water bottles on the cruise , Will I need to bring them or order them before I get on ship? I will be going on a carnival ship. Size of luggage to bring

Not free, but you can order them. It’s $10 for a 12 pack of water.

Can my carry on be a rolling bag? If my memory serves me right, Carnival didn’t allow rolling bags as carry ons. (It’s been a few years.)

Yes, I do it every cruise!

Hello: can I travel with 2 guitars, a suitcase and a carry on for a transatlantic cruise?

That shouldn’t be a problem.

Are cruise allowed to break security seals on my shampoo etc?

I’m still unsure about the allowed dimensions of the carry on bag. We would each like to carry the traditional size case allowed on flights as cabin luggage which fits in the overhead lockers. Is this ok

Absolutely. There is no real limit on carry-on. You can bring on a full-sized suitcase. Most people just check large bags because it’s much easier than having to carry them onto the ship.

can we check in 2 pieces of luggage and a garment bag? Also, can we bring a handheld steamer for clothes?

Yes, you can bring the luggage and garment bags. Steamers are typically prohibited. There is laundry service on the ship if needed.

I need to take two largish boxed items with me to Florida on Sky Princess from Southampton on 29 Oct 2022. As normal we also have two suitcases. The boxed items weigh 15pounds and 36 pounds respectively. I have phoned Princess and was reassured the bit of boxed extra luggage would be ok. Please reassure me it is!!

If the cruise line says Ok, then that should be plenty of assurance. I see no reason to worry.

What are the limitations on a one way cruise/relocating to a new home? Can you just bring whatever will fit in your room? Musical instruments? Snorkeling equipment? Martial arts gear?

Well there are some reasonable bag limits. If it looks like you’re packing up for a move, then expect the cruise to ask about all the bags.

Is rubbing alcohol allowed on carnival cruise ship

We’d think that if it were sealed and unopened (and a small amount) it should be fine.

Am I allowed t take paracetamol caskets in my cases along with voltrrol and rubbing creams ,I have Rhumatoid Athritis and need extra over the counter meds to add to my prescription meds

Not sure what those are, but OTC medications are fine.

My husband and I both use CPAP machines. We will be driving to embarkation port, doing a cruisetour (land portion after ship) and then flying home. Can we bring the gallon of distilled water on with us? I would not need to take it back on the plane. Thanks!

Yes, that should be fine. Cruise lines make exceptions for the distilled water for this and for baby formula.

Thank you. I will be sure to take it along then.

I have a large framed shirt that someone is taking on a cruise ship toAuckland for me is this allowed ? Thanks Cushla

Should be fine. After all, cruise ships have art sales on the ship.

Can and much water can we bring on the cruise ship???

Depends on the cruise line. Carnival and Royal Caribbean allow 12 bottles. See more here: https://www.cruzely.com/bringing-water-or-soda-on-the-ship-carnival-royal-caribbean-princess-and-norwegian/

Can we bring pop on a cruise? Sone say yes some say no…. some say carry on some say luggage. We’re travelling on holland cruises

Holland America is a little confusing because we found nowhere that it says you can or can’t bring on soda. Anecdotes on the Internet make it sound like bringing a reasonable amount on board with you is ok.

When it’s time to leave the ship at the end of the cruise what do you do with your larger checked bags? Do you just carry them out with your other belongings?

If you want, you can place them outside the cabin the night before you ship gets home. The crew will take them and they will be brought to the terminal for you. Many people, however, choose to carry them off themselves because passengers carrying all their belongings (and not waiting on luggage) are allowed to debark first.

Hi, any idea if we would be allowed to bring a gallon of soymilk (for our dairy allergic kid to eat with cereal as the ones they stock on ships are always sweetened already) on the boat? Thanks!

Typically you aren’t allowed to bring items that large. However, since it’s for dietary needs, then they will likely say it’s fine. I would call the cruise line and explain the situation. They will point you in the right direction.

where can you place your wine bottles

We suggest bringing those in your carry-on to avoid any breaking and leaking.

I read that on Princess you are allowed 1 750ml bottle of wine per person. What about those small, single-serve 187ml bottles? 750ml is about the volume of a regular bottle. Is the limit for “number” of bottles or the “amount” per person? 750ml is about 4 of those small ones. So, can I bring 4 small ones per person?? Thank you.

That’s a good question. It’s not something we’ve tried before. It will likely depend on the security staff at that particular port. We’ve found many are fairly relaxed on rules; they just want to make sure you aren’t bringing anything dangerous.

This is an odd question, but being an introverted crafter I would like to bring supplies to help me decompress during down times. I was wondering if pliers are acceptable – I make chains similar to rosary chains (no cutting, just bending and twisting; no waste). Is there a length limitation or just not allowed.

Pliers are fine. In fact, knives up to 4 inches are allowed (but we’d suggest leaving those at home).

Pliers that were in his carryon bag were taken away from my husband when we boarded Norwegian Breakaway February 2020 in New Orleans.

Hello I was wondering if it would be acceptable to use a water bottle as a container? My hair conditioner comes in a very large jug so I was thinking about pouring it into a water bottle. But, it seems there could be a few misunderstandings in doing this. Would it be alright?

There’s no rule against the type of container, but as you mention, it would likely be questioned. What about travel bottles? Those that hold a few ounces are perfect for a cruise.

I was wondering if carry on luggage is checked? Like do they just put it through the x-ray machine or just be like “oh it’s carry on, you’re good to go.” Do they x-ray it just like they do with the other checked luggage?

Yes, everything is x-rayed just like at the airport.

Can you take CBS oil tablets on ship

We assume you mean CBD oil? We’d leave it at home. There are a quite a few complications about the legality and it’s not worth the risk.

This will be my first cruise, and I was wondering if you can check a duffle bag as luggage, or am I going to have to treat it as a carry on?

You’re going to have a blast. On a cruise, you don’t have to “check” any luggage. You can if you want so that you don’t have to carry it, but you can also just carry it on yourself. It’s not like a plane where there is only a certain amount of room.

Will items be pulled out of carry on such as vapes and e liquid?

Vaping and e-cigarettes are allowed on ships, but like regular smoking, it’s limited only to certain areas. So there’s no real reason for the security team to pull out the items. That said, they do have the right to inspect anything you’re bringing on the ship.

Are contact solutions allowed

Yes, they are.

Where should I pack the water bottles I’m allowed to bring? They will be unopened and still sealed in their plastic. Also- should I put my cigarettes in my carry on or luggage? I am driving down so I won’t go through airport.

It’s usually best to carry these items on with you if you can. That way they don’t have the potential to bust and soak other people’s bags.

Is the carry-on allowed along with a purse? In other words, they don’t count a woman’s purse to be the carry on?

Carry-on is simply what you bring on with you. You can bring every bag with you if you want to carry it. There are no real limits like there are on airlines. For instance, we always “carry on” a full-size suitcase and backpack.

Can I have my splash, perfumes, lotion and accessories on my carry in bag??

Absolutely.

Am I able to bring a hair dryer, straightener and curling iron

Yes, although hair dryers are already provided in cabins.

What if your luggage is over 50 pounds what will happen to it

On a cruise? Nothing. The baggage rules are pretty lax. However, keep in mind that you will still need to carry it around on your way to the ship, so the lighter, the better!

Are people allowed to bring their scale on a cruise?

Like a bathroom scale? Sure, but keep in mind it might make you sad. There will also likely be scales in the gym if you don’t want to bring one.

Thank you very much!

Hello, was wondering where the best place to store my vape pen when going through cruise security would be. Can I put it through my checked luggage? Travelling with older relative that would disapprove and would rather not have to pull out my vape pen in front of her when going through security. Can i leave it in my bag without taking it out? Flew with an epi-pen and had to take it out of my bag and put it on the tray seperatly. Will that occur? Side note- old enough to smoke, young enough to be publicly chastised by elder. Thank you for you’re help! -Grace

Yep, you can put it in your checked luggage. Smoking is allowed only on certain parts of the ship… but it is allowed. Surprised you had to take it out at all — even in a carry-on. Edit: I see you had to take it out when you flew. Cruise security is more accommodating. If you don’t want to risk it, however, just toss it in the checked baggage.

Alaska Cruises on Princess – Everything you need to know about baggage

Alaska Cruises on Princess - baggage needs

It’s finally time to pack for Alaska cruises on Princess! But there are so many websites to search for luggage detail limits: domestic airlines, Alaska Railroad, Princess ships, and motor coaches. Where do you begin? We have simplified the process by telling you about popular sizes to use for air, rail, ships, and motor coaches. Detailed guidelines for luggage sizes and other suggestions are outlined below.

Luggage sizes for Alaska Cruises on Princess including Land Cruisetours with Alaska Railroad

Most passengers pack three bags per person — one for the cruise, one for the land cruisetour portion, and one daypack. We suggest the three sizes below in order to meet your needs for all carriers.

  • BAG 1: Domestic Airline Checked Baggage Size: Most airlines will allow you to check one bag and have one carry-on bag. There is normally a maximum weight limit of 50 pounds per checked bag as well as a size restriction. A common size bag for checking through is: 27″ x 21″ x 14 “. Check with your airline before making a final decision. Wheeled bags are recommended.
  • BAG 2: Domestic Airline Carry-On Baggage Size: A common sized bag for carry-on luggage is 22″x 14″x 9 “. Most airlines have a carry-on weight limit of 40 pounds. Wheeled bags are recommended.
  • BAG 3: Alaska Railroad Personal Item Bag Size: One Personal Item/Day Pack item is allowed per person. Personal item bags may not exceed 15” x 14” x 6”. Please remember to take your medications, cameras or other items that you will need during your train ride.

Princess Cruise Ship Luggage

Although Princess does not limit the number of bags allowed on board, we would strongly suggest no more than three bags total: One for the cruise, one for land, and one personal item/backpack, all as listed above. Note: Check with your specific carrier.

If you are going on the cruise-only portion of a cruise, the 27″ bag and the 22″ bag will carry enough for several weeks. Packing for a seven-day cruise can fit easily into a 27″ and a daypack.

Baggage for land cruisetours with Princess

  • 27″ LUGGAGE: A 27” bag going to the ship rendezvous point will receive a “Join Me Onboard Ship” tag at your arrival airport. This bag will travel with Princess from the arrival airport to your ship. If you have a land cruisetour first, you will not see this bag until you arrive at the ship. Be sure to consider these things when packing and selecting your suitcases: Airlines often charge for checked baggage and for any bag weighing over 50 lbs. You should strive to be five to eight pounds under that weight limit going to the destination, so you can have room to tuck souvenirs in on the way home and still be underweight with no penalty charges.
  • 22″ LUGGAGE: A 22” Carry-on bag going with you to your hotel destination receives a “Travel With Me” tag at your arrival airport. To take your cruisetour, you simply disembark off the airplane with a daypack, meet the Princess representative at baggage claim who will give you instructions about luggage and transportation. This 22″ bag will travel with you to the hotel, or Princess will deliver it to your hotel. Princess will store this carry-on bag while you’re in transit between locations of the Cruisetour, and deliver it to your room the first evening. Note: This size bag COULD be checked with your airline. We try to keep this bag with us for medications, a change of clothes/pajamas, cameras, laptops, etc. It’s our emergency bag in case the airline misplaces the checked bag. So if you decide to check it, keep items needed in your daypack.
  • 15″ DAYPACK: For your personal item, we suggest a lightweight daypack that you have the ability to tuck a small purse, water bottle, medications, and camera inside as needed.

Cruisetour Guidelines

On the Princess.com website, answers to most of your questions will be under FAQ:

  • Select Cruisetour Questions
  • Alaska Cruisetours (click here)

Cruisetours for land and sea have specific guidelines regarding the size bag you can bring. Because of the types of transportation used, such as trains and motor coaches, you will not be able to bring a full-sized suitcase, only a 22″ carry-on sized bag, and a 15″ daypack/personal item.

Alaska Cruises on Princess - everything about baggage

What should I pack in my Daypack?

Keep all necessities with you.

During the day, while in transit, you can bring one 15″ personal item/daypack, such as a tote or backpack, with all of your daily necessities, e.g., water bottles, cameras, billfold, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hat. You will not have access to your 22″ carry-on bag which will be in storage during the day.

Alaska Cruises on Princess - everything about baggage

Pack all daily necessities, such as medicine and travel documents in your 15″ personal item/daypack that you keep with you. That bag could double as your daypack for excursions, such as a tote or backpack.

Once onboard the ship, your room will be equipped with a safe where you can leave some of these items. Your land hotels during the cruisetour may also supply a safe in your room. If not, be sure to carry valuables with you. When checking out of hotel rooms and ship cabins, make sure nothing is left behind. Once you check out, you might not have items returned.

Plan your luggage to meet cruise, rail, and motorcoach guidelines.

In summary, think of the Cruisetour luggage as the guidelines for air travel. You’re allowed to bring one carry-on suitcase (22″ or less) and one personal item (15″ or less). The personal item can stay with you at all times, fitting under a seat while you’re in transit on trains and motor coaches. The 22″ carry-on suitcase will be accessible when you reach the first night’s stay.

If you pack light enough, you MIGHT be able to fit all of your items into one carry-on suitcase for the entire trip.

Laundry Facilities are Onboard

There are laundry facilities available on the ship and in some of the lodges. They are typically self serve machines, and the typical rates are $3 per load for wash and $3 for dryer.  You can purchase laundry soap on board or bring your own. On the ship, they use tokens which you can purchase from your cruise card/medallion out of your onboard credits.

When it comes to packing for a Princess Cruise, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure you have all the essentials for a comfortable and enjoyable cruise vacation. Secondly, you’ll want to be mindful of the luggage restrictions set by the cruise line.

Generally speaking, most cruise lines allow passengers to bring two pieces of luggage per person. However, there are some size and weight restrictions that vary by cruise line. For example, Princess Cruises requires that each piece of luggage weigh no more than 50 pounds and have dimensions no larger than 62 inches (length + width + height).

If you’re planning on bringing more than two pieces of luggage, you’ll need to contact the cruise line directly to make arrangements. In most cases, you’ll be able to bring an additional piece of luggage for a fee.

So, how many suitcases can you take on a Princess Cruise? The answer is two, plus one additional piece of luggage for a fee. Just be sure to pack light and check the luggage restrictions before you set sail.

Besides this, When packing for a cruise, it is important to consider the different types of activities you will be doing. Princess suggests that you bring one bag for the cruise, one for land activities, and one personal item/backpack. This will help you to be prepared for anything and not have too much luggage to carry around.

What Size Suitcase Can You Take On A Cruise?

This is a common question that people have when they are packing for a cruise. There are a few things to keep in mind when you are packing for a cruise. First, you will want to make sure that you check the luggage restrictions for your particular cruise line. Each cruise line has different restrictions, so it is important to make sure that you are aware of them before you start packing. Second, you will want to think about what you will be doing on your cruise. If you plan on doing a lot of activities, you may want to pack a larger suitcase so that you have enough room for all of your belongings. Finally, you will want to consider the weather. If you are cruising during the summer, you will likely need to pack lighter clothing. However, if you are cruising during the winter, you may need to pack heavier clothing to stay warm.

An additional, When going on a cruise, it is important to make sure that your bags are the right size. Your carry-on bag should be no larger than 24” x 16” x 12” and your checked bag should be no larger than 28” x 22” x 14”. Each checked bag should not weigh more than 50 pounds when full. This will ensure that you are able to bring everything you need on the cruise and that your bags fit in the storage areas on the ship.

Can You Carry Your Own Luggage On A Cruise Ship?

This is a common question that we get asked a lot here at CruiseClub UK. The answer is that it really depends on the cruise line and the size of the ship. Some cruise lines allow you to bring your own luggage on board, but they may have restrictions on the size and weight of the luggage. Other cruise lines don’t allow you to bring your own luggage on board and will require you to use their luggage handling services.

If you are planning on bringing your own luggage on a cruise ship, we recommend that you check with the cruise line beforehand to see if they have any restrictions. We also recommend that you pack light, as you will have to carry your luggage on and off the ship each time you disembark.

Also, Most cruise lines allow passengers to carry their own bags onto the ship. However, there will be no porters to assist with manhandling bags up and down narrow hallways and multiple stairways. Additionally, elevators may not be available as the crew completes embarkation day tasks.

Do Cruise Ships Check Your Bags?

One of the most common questions we get asked is whether or not cruise ships will check your bags. The answer is: it depends. While most cruise lines do not require you to have your bags checked before boarding, some do recommend it.

For example, Carnival Cruise Lines states on their website that, “For the safety and security of all our guests, we recommend that you have your luggage inspected before you board the ship.”

Similarly, Royal Caribbean also recommends that guests have their bags checked before boarding. They state on their website that, “For the safety and security of all our guests, we recommend that you have your luggage inspected before you board the ship.”

While it is not required, we recommend that you have your bags checked before boarding a cruise ship. This will ensure that you and your belongings are safe and secure during your cruise.

An additional, Before you board your cruise ship, your luggage will go through security. There are some things you can’t bring on the ship, so it’s best to leave them at home. Make sure you don’t pack your passport in your checked luggage either! You’ll need it to get into the terminal.

How Many Carry-On Bags Are Allowed On A Princess Cruise?

Most airlines have a weight limit of 50 pounds for carry-on luggage, but some have lower limits. For example, American Airlines allows carry-ons that weigh up to 40 pounds.

If you’re planning to bring a carry-on bag on a Princess Cruise, make sure it meets the size and weight requirements set by the airline. The average size of a carry-on bag is 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, but some airlines have smaller size limits. For example, Southwest Airlines only allows carry-on bags that are 21 inches by 10 inches by 5 inches.

The weight limit for carry-on bags can vary by airline, so be sure to check the limits for the airline you’re flying. For example, United Airlines has a limit of 50 pounds for carry-on bags, while Alaska Airlines only allows carry-on bags that weigh up to 40 pounds.

If your carry-on bag is too big or too heavy, you may be able to check it at the gate. However, there is usually a fee for checking a bag at the gate, so it’s best to check the size and weight limits before you pack.

How Much Does It Cost To Check A Bag On A Princess Cruise?

How Much Luggage Can I Bring on a Cruise?

Cruise lines aren’t very strict about how much luggage you can bring, however they do have some suggestions and guidelines. A good rule of thumb is to pack 1-2 pieces of luggage per person, with a maximum weight of 50 lbs or 22.5 kg.

A carry-on bag for embarkation day is recommended. Remember to your carry-on bag or backpack with your cruise essentials for the day, medications, valuables and travel documents.

Something to note is that it can be tempting to overpack for a cruise, especially if you enjoy dressing up for dinners and formal nights . However, many cruise ships have a self serve laundrette or laundry services at an additional charge that you can use, if needed.

If you’re trying to pack light for your cruise , you can rewear and repurpose some clothing as well, and no one will notice!

Some cruise lines have specific luggage limits posted on their website:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line

The luggage allowance for Norwegian Cruise Line is two pieces of checked luggage with a 50-pound maximum each, per passenger. Luggage should be clearly labelled with your name, address and contact number.

NCL suggests bringing a small carry-on bag or backpack when boarding, as can take a few hours after embarkation for your luggage to be delivered to your stateroom. This bag should also be used for the last night of your cruise, when luggage is collected before disembarkation .

  • Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line suggests the following:

  • 3-5 day cruises: maximum one bag per passenger
  • 6 days and longer: maximum 2 suitcases per passenger

According to the Carnival website , “each checked suit case and carry-on suit case should not weigh more than 50 pounds, and when lying flat, bags must not exceed 16 inches high by 24 inches wide (the length of the bag is not a factor). For security screening purposes, all luggage should be unlocked. Oversized luggage and locked luggage may cause delivery delays.”

Large coolers are not permitted onboard Carnival cruise ships. However, you can bring small quantities of soda in small, personal-sized cooler bags, no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches.

Cruise suitcases & carry on bags

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises does not impose luggage or weight limit. However they do point out that “many domestic airline carriers now impose excess baggage fees for one or more bags and bags weighing over 50 lbs.” and advise cruise passengers to check with your carrier regarding weight restrictions.

  • Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean advises that each passenger “is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property (including luggage) aboard the vessel; however, for your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take. Each guest has the option to carry their luggage on board or check-in luggage prior to boarding. Luggage may include suitcases, trunks, valises, satchels, bags, hangers containing clothing, toiletries and similar items.”

MSC Cruises

If you’re cruising with MSC, the cruise line posts the following luggage allowance per person:

  • two suitcases per person (maximum size 90x75x43 cm and 23 kg in weight per piece of luggage)
  • two pieces of hand luggage per person (maximum size 56x45x25 cm in size and 23 kg in weight per bag).

No matter which cruise line you are sailing with, it’s a good idea to keep the number of bags you bring with to 1-2 suitcases a person, 1 piece of carry on luggage (a backpack or tote bag is fine), and a personal bag (ie. purse). Always check the airline restrictions.

Prohibited Items on a Cruise

clothing steamer

Prohibited items on cruise ships include:

  • weapons and sharp objects (including knives)
  • irons and clothes steamers
  • candles (or items with open flames)
  • surge protected power bars
  • drugs (including cannibus products)

Hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons are allowed. You may also bring a non-surge protected power bar .

Depending on the time you board your cruise ship on embarkation day, you may not be able to go to your cabin to drop off your luggage right away. Having a small carry-on bag and/or personal bag will be manageable, but having many pieces of luggage would be difficult.

Are There Baggage Fees on a Cruise?

Thankfully there are no baggage fees or additional charges on cruises at this time. Most cruise lines have suggestions for how much luggage to bring for a cruise, however we have never seen these allowances being monitored or enforced.

That being said, you do want to be careful when flying to and from your cruise port. Most airline carriers have strict luggage allowances and will change for excess baggage and weight or luggage.

Tip: Pack an electronic luggage scale for your cruise , to ensure your luggage is not overweight.

How Much Should I Tip Porters at the Cruise Terminal?

Porters at luggage drop off

Tipping luggage porters at the cruise terminal is not mandatory. However it is customary to give a small tip per bag.

The amount will vary based on your discretion, however many cruise passengers say they tip between $1-5 per bag. It’s a good idea to have some small bills ready as you approach the cruise terminal luggage drop-off zone.

Something to note is that luggage porters work for the cruise port terminal, and not the cruise line.

How many bags can I bring on my cruise?

Airlines and other carriers restrict the size and weight of bags, have limits on the number of carry-on bags, etc.  What about cruise lines?  There is no shortage of advice about how to pack for a cruise , and we have a great cruise packing list you can use, but how much you can bring onboard?  Let's look at how much of your world you can bag up and bring on a cruise and what various cruise line policies say about how lightly you need to travel.

Bringing Luggage on a Cruise - The Basics

First know that you can easily fit all of your cruise luggage into two categories: carry-on and checked.  Cruise lines make this distinction quite easy - if you plan to carry a bag on with you (which means you'll be holding onto it until your room is ready) it's a carry-on.  Simple stuff, huh?  Any of your bags you wish to leave at the curb at check in, and not see again until later on your embarkation day are checked bags.  You should know however, that beyond the obvious (keep valuables and breakables in your carry-on), any alcohol you're bringing onboard (in accordance with cruise line policies - here are our thoughts on bringing alcohol onboard) should be hand-carried or placed in a carry-on bag.  You should also carry on anything you'll need the first few hours of your cruise, such as medications, a change of clothes.  In fact, this is one of our 12 embarkation day tips .  Sometimes less is more, and we have a list of things you should bring on your cruise that will save you money , and potentially space.

How Many Bags of Each Type Can I Bring?

We've outlined some popular cruise line policies below, but in general, there aren't enforced restrictions for either category so we'll try and summarize.  Know that at times, embarkation day can see crowds in buffet areas and such, and no one wants to lug around a bunch of bags their first few hours on the ship - so try and limit your carry-ons to what you can comfortably keep with you in a crowd.  Unlike checking in for a flight however there will be no bins your bag needs to fit in or gate agents ensuring your bag or bags fall into specific parameters.

Quick Tip: Check out CruiseHabit Ric's free Luggage Contact Sheet  to make sure you and your bags don't spend too much time apart, and look at our cruise packing list for tips on what you should put in your bags.

For checked bags several lines have no restriction on the number of bags, others have suggestions based on the length of the cruise, and you can bet that no line wants their crew to have to move around your 100 lb suitcase.  The real restriction on the amount of baggage you bring is how much space is in your stateroom.  While rooms have become larger over the years, and offer more storage than ever, you still won't have space for your favorite piano or steamer trunk.  Another limiting factor may have to do with you getting to and from the ship.  Any baggage fees assessed by airlines or other common carriers still apply.

You should remember that if you're planning on checking bags, you will want to arrive to the port at least three hours before sail-away unless otherwise indicated by the cruise line.  It takes time to load up all those bags, and at some point the porters who get them to the ship go home - you want to be sure to get to your vacation before they get to their car.

Everyone has different gear and techniques, but we have an whole series of articles to help you pack .

Cruise Line Baggage Policies

Policies on this matter vary by cruise line, and we've only listed a few below though they're reasonably standard across the board.  If you have a cruise on a line not listed, let us know and we'll be glad to help you find the right information.

To help you plan, we suggest you limit your luggage to a maximum of one bag per person, if traveling on cruises of 3-5 days duration, and no more than two bags per person, for cruises of 6 days or longer.   ...  Each checked suit case and carry-on suit case should not weigh more than 50 pounds, and when lying flat, bags must not exceed 16 inches high by 24 inches wide (the length of the bag is not a factor). For security screening purposes and to avoid any delivery delay, all luggage should be unlocked.

The full policy can be found here . Note that Carnival does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof Carnival cruise bag tag holders .

Royal Caribbean

Each guest is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property (including luggage) aboard the vessel; however, for your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take. Keep in mind that airlines may charge for excess or oversize luggage. Charges incurred for excess or oversize baggage are the sole responsibility of the passenger. Each airline has a different limit on the amount of luggage they allow. Check with your air carrier for specific restrictions, such as allowance of pounds and any additional charges.

Note that Royal Caribbean does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof Royal Caribbean cruise bag tag holders .

Each passenger is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property (including luggage) aboard the vessel; however, for your comfort and convenience, it is recommended that you limit the number of pieces you take. Guests who have made air arrangements on their own or with Celebrity Cruises should check with their air carrier for specific baggage policies related to the following: Number of bags allowed, baggage weight restrictions, baggage size restrictions, special conditions for sports equipment, or additional restrictions, as the air carrier may impose additional fees for some or all of these items. Celebrity Cruises will not be responsible for any additional fees incurred as a result of carrier baggage restrictions.

The full policy can be found here . Note that Celebrity does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof Celebrity cruise bag tag holders .

Princess has no policy around baggage restrictions online.  We spoke with their team and they informed us that for cruises (land-cruise packages may be different), they have no restriction on the number of bags you can bring, they only ask that no single bag exceeds 50 lbs (~22.5 kg).

Note that Princess does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof Princess cruise bag tag holders .

Each person is allowed up to two pieces of personal luggage on board, with each piece weighing a maximum of 50 pounds. However, if passengers are traveling by air, they need to check with the airline for specific restrictions.

Note that Norwegian does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof Norwegian cruise bag tag holders .

Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Mom's Panel (which is an "official" voice of Disney) has this to say about baggage allowances:

According to your Disney Cruise Line contract, guests can bring two suitcases per person on board plus a carry-on bag which can not exceed 22" wide, 14" high and 9" deep. These dimensions are meant to be a guideline. More than likely, there won't be anyone at the terminal with a measuring tape making sure every guest's bag complies. However, if someone tries to carry on an enormous piece of luggage, a Disney Cast Member at the Port Terminal may say something or ask the guest to check the luggage on. Embarkation Day tends to be busy and congested in some areas and at some times. Therefore, making sure that guests are traveling as light as possible helps to alleviate a lot of issues.

Guests may bring a reasonable amount of luggage onboard an Oceania Cruises vessel. No baggage of items heavier than 70 lbs. will be loaded onto or off-loaded from our vessels. Please refer to your Guest Ticket/Contract for all applicable Terms and Conditions.

The full policy can be found here .

Holland America Line

Holland America Line 's website does not indicate any specific restriction with regard to the size of weight of bags.  Speaking with them on the phone, they indicated that you can bring as many bags as you want, keeping in mind that you'll have to fit them in your stateroom and that airlines may charge fees as well.

Note that Holland America does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof Holland America cruise bag tag holders .

Guests are encouraged to limit their checked luggage to two suitcases per person (not exceeding 90x75x43 cm in size and 23 kg in weight per bag), and two pieces of hand luggage per person (not exceeding 56x45x25 cm in size and 23 kg in weight per bag).  On all MSC Grand Voyages to/from The Caribbean, South America, South Africa and The United Arab Emirates, the above mentioned guidelines represent the maximum limit allowed per person. In any case, the maximum amount of luggage in each cabin must not exceed 100 kg and/or 8 pieces among all passengers in the same cabin.

The full policy can be found here . Note that MSC does not provide bag tags.  You must print, fold, staple, and tape your own.  We recommend saving the time and ensuing your bags arrive to your stateroom by using metal and PVC waterproof MSC cruise bag tag holders .

Virgin Voyages

Virgin's policy is among the most simple: they don't limit your bags, but remind you to check with your airline.

While we have not placed restrictions on Sailor luggage, we recommend limiting the number of bags you bring on board so that we can accommodate all Sailors and ensure a smooth embarkation. We also recommend checking airline restrictions if you're flying.

This comes from their FAQ, linked here .

Virgin doesn't generally provide luggage tags ahead of time (via mail or online), you'll get them at the port if you need to check bags.  If you want to check our Virgin, please chat with our travel parterns , or support the site and get extra help by using this link to book with Virgin.

Have you ever brought too many bags to store, or ruined your porters back with your brick collection?  Maybe you just have a question?  Let us know in the comments below or reach out on Facebook or Twitter .

Weight limit on luggage?

I don't ever remember reading about a weight limit on luggage for the ship. I know the airlines do it, but are there any restrictions on a cruise?

I'm trying to limit the number of bags that I take on the ship because we have to carry them off the ship ourselves.

No weight limit on luggage if you aren't flying.

Just make sure it's not too heavy for you to carry! ;)

I don’t think the cruise lines have bothered to put a weight limit as the airlines do a nice job keeping those things under control for them.

Actually, Royal Caribbean does have a published 200-lb weight limit. Of course, it would be pretty difficult to exceed that limit.

Don't be so sure. You should see what I take on our long cruises. I usually carry an extra case just for reading material. Good thing we're Elite and get free laundry. :)

I stand (sit) corrected. Keep in mind that RCI's policy is 200 pounds PER PERSON. Would that still be a problem for you?

The "Princess Cruises Passage Contract" states in section 15, "You may take a reasonable amount of luggage on board containing only Your personal effects, but may not carry any bulky items. A charge may be payable by Passenger for any excess baggage."

They do not give any guidance as to what is reasonable, what is bulky nor do they provide any indication as to what the charge may be if you exceed reasonable. I am sure that this makes it perfectly clear as to how much luggage you can bring.

I am so glad someone asked this question...I had been wondering if the ships had luggage weight limits. My husband and I want to share one large suitcase.

I think we can manage with a 400 lb allotment :D

Reasonable is in the eye of the beholder. We have a friend who must travel with a scooter and an air mattress, as well as their sundry other items. Then come the suitcases. Princess nor any other line has ever questioned them about overage.

My hat's off to you. I couldn't do it. :)

NCL also has a 200 pound weight limit

I can't imagine bringing that much luggage on a cruise. I have one 25" suitcase and a rolling backpack that I've used for 21-day cruises. For my Golden cruise in February, I'll be bringing my 25" suitcase and a 18" suitcase because I'm flying to CA for a week after the cruise and will need different clothes.

For the March cruise we will most likely have 2 large cases and a wheelie carryon. One of the cases will have a king size comforter in it which will have been "vacuumed" down to practically nothing. When we leave the ship the comforter becomes a gift to the room steward or whomever else wants it. Or not. Of course my baby Melitta will be there too. But that's a whole other thread. :)

Arlene... I have to laugh. On a Royal Princess cruise several years ago, I had taken the Princess transfers from the hotel in Rome to the pier. A older couple had NO suitcases but had several cardboard boxes, taped up and beaten to death by the airlines -- they were literally falling apart with clothing coming out. I didn't see the couple again but maybe they were planning to leave everything behind! :):)

LOL. I'm not that bad. I do know folks though who live in Texas and when their kids were small would buy skiing clothes at Good Will and then leave them after their trip. No need for parkas in Texas.
