Safari Not Working on Your iPhone? Here’s How to Fix It

Ojash Yadav

Although iPhones and iPads support other apps to reach the Web, Safari remains the most favored and frequently used browser for iOS users. Troubleshooting on Safari can be frustrating, especially if its issues prevent you from searching for a solution online. Here are a few common reasons why Safari may not be working on your iPhone and how to fix the problems.

Turn on Mobile Data for the Safari App

Disable experimental features, change your network settings.

Test Your Internet Connection

To begin with, ensure that the problem is with Safari and not with your internet connection. For this, open, say, a non-Apple app like Facebook or Chrome, and see whether the website or the feed loads. If it does, then Safari is at fault. Otherwise, your internet connection is at fault. If it’s the former, move on to the next step.

If you’ve been exploring your iPhone’s data-saving features, which let you specify which apps have access to your phone’s mobile data, then there’s a chance that you turned off mobile data for the Safari app. That means Safari will work when you’re connected to Wi-Fi but not to mobile data. (Try running Safari over Wi-Fi to test this.)

If that’s the case, then to turn mobile data back on for Safari, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data,” and then in the “Mobile Data” list, make sure the slider next to Safari is in the green “On” position.

You may not know about this, but Safari for the iPhone has a whole load of experimental features that you can disable and enable as you please.

The problem with these, as the name suggests, is that they are indeed experimental and subsequently don’t all work properly. Disabling them one by one can fix Safari if it’s not working and help you discover which exact feature was causing the problem,

On your iPhone, go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced -> Experimental Features.”

Turn On Cellular Experimental Features For Safari App

If you have more than one feature enabled here, disable just one, then check to see if Safari works normally again. If it doesn’t, re-enable that feature (if you want it) and disable the next one. Keep repeating this procedure until Safari starts working again.

Try resetting your Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting to the network.

  • Go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi” and turn it off, then turn it back on after a few seconds.

Turn Off And Turn On Wifi

  • If you’re using mobile data, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data” and turn “Mobile Data” off and back on after a few seconds.

  • If neither option works, go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi,” connect to a different Wi-Fi network, and try loading the web page again.

If the problem persists, try restoring your network settings to their original configuration.

  • Go to “Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset” and choose “Reset Network Settings.”

Common Problems With Safari And How To Solve Them

By following the fixes we’ve mentioned above, you should be able to revive Safari and make it work normally again. However, there are some specific issues that commonly come up with Safari. Here’s how to solve them.

Problem: Safari Crashed and Won’t Open

If you’ve ever panicked after Safari closed unexpectedly and couldn’t get the app to start, you probably encountered a bug that affects Safari’s search engine suggestions. This issue can cause the app to crash, freeze, or fail to start altogether. Although the bug usually plagues devices running iOS 10, it can affect just about any iPhone or iPad.

How to Fix It: Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Go to “Settings” and choose “Safari” in your list of apps. Here, find “Search Engine Suggestions” and turn it off.

Turn Off Seqarch Engine Suggestions

This feature offers suggestions for what you can search for as you type into Safari’s search bar. Disabling it gets rid of the problem for many users.

Problem: Safari Is Gray (and Won’t Open)

Sometimes when you update your iPhone’s iOS to a newer version, you may encounter a bug that turns some apps gray and prevent them from opening. This bug causes Safari to stop working and turns its icon gray when you switch to another app while Safari is running in the background.

How to Fix It: Update Your Software

To solve this problem, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. Apple includes important bug fixes in each software update, so it’s important to keep your iPhone or iPad up to date. iOS 11.1 fixed this bug for most users, so be sure to update to 11.1 or greater if you’re running an older version of iOS.

Go to “Settings -> General,” choose “Software Update,” and install the latest update.

Problem: Safari Is Slow

As powerful as your iPhone can be, it can get bogged down with all the extraneous information that it processes. If you notice that Safari takes longer to load pages or graphics, it may be time to do some housekeeping. Try clearing your browser history, website data, and cache to make Safari run more smoothly.

How to Fix It: Clear Your Data

To delete your cookies, cache, and browsing history, go to “Settings -> Safari,” choose “Clear History and Data,” and confirm that you want to go ahead. Safari will remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Clear Website Data Safari

To keep your browsing history but clear your cache and cookies, first go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced.”

Safari Advance Settings Menu

There, choose “Website Data -> Remove All Website Data” and tap “Remove Now.” Note that Safari will not remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Remove Website Data Safari 2

To remove only a portion of your browsing history, cache, and cookies, start by opening Safari and tapping the Bookmark icon. Here, open your history and tap “Clear.” Now Safari will give you the option to clear your history, cookies, and browsing data from the past hour, the past day, the past 48 hours, or from your entire history. Pick the relevant option.

Delete History Safari

Problem: Safari Still Isn’t Working

Although it sounds cliche, turning your phone off and back on again can be the solution to any number of Safari-related issues.

How to Fix It: Restart Safari or Reboot Your Phone

If none of the previous fixes help solve your problem, try restarting the app or rebooting your phone.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and press on the screen when your finger is near the center to open the multitasking view, and then swipe up on Safari to close it. This will reset Safari.
  • To shut down your phone, press and hold the sleep/wake button until a slider appears. Slide to the right to power off your phone. For iPhone X and above, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the slider appears. Then slide it to the right to power off your phone.

I've Covered iPhones for 11 Years: Here Are My 6 Favorites of All Time

8 tips and tricks to quickly master the photos app on your iphone, i curated the perfect list of free adobe software alternatives.

Safari is the native browser for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. It comes pre-installed on almost every Apple device, and it's designed to be fast and efficient for them. However, there are times when Safari doesn't work.

When this happens, it usually means there's a setting or software issue. There are even cases where you might not be able to access the internet at all on your iPhone or iPad. Luckily, there are a variety of things you can try to get Safari working again.

1. Restart Your Device

You hear it all the time—turn your device off and on again. While this may sound too simple to work, restarting your iPhone or iPad has been known to clear your usable memory, which can speed up Safari.

If Safari is frozen or just a blank white screen, restarting your iPhone or iPad can also fix these problems. Before you try anything else, just make sure you cover the basics.

If you're new to Safari or Apple devices, you might want to check out our beginner's guide to Safari for iPhone and iPad users .

2. Turn Off Safari Suggestions

Turning off Safari Suggestions is one of the simplest and most common fixes for Safari not loading or crashing on an Apple device. While we aren't sure why this works, many users have reported that turning this off fixes the problem.

To turn off suggestions, head to Settings > Safari > Safari Suggestions and turn this off. You can also turn off Search Engine Suggestions while you're there too, as some users reported this also fixes the issue.

Some users have also said that blocking Safari popups on your iPhone can improve the memory usage of Safari. So, you may also want to give this a try.

If this fixes your issue, then you're all set. If not, try the following steps.

3. Turn On Cellular Data for Safari

If you're frequently connected to Wi-Fi, you may have cellular data off for Safari to save internet data. While helpful, if your Wi-Fi isn't functioning right, connecting to cellular data could fix your issue.

To do this, head to Settings > Cellular > Safari and turn this on. If it was off, this was most likely the cause of your issue. Alternatively, you can turn off Wi-Fi if you're connected and just connect with cellular data. If you can connect this way, that means there's a network issue with your Wi-Fi network.

4. Edit Your Screen Time Settings

If you've ever changed your Screen Time settings or blocked certain websites through Screen Time, try turning these settings off. To block websites, you need to enable Content Restrictions which can inadvertently block websites you still want to use. If you can't load a link from an email or text message, this could also be a sign that content restrictions are on.

To fix this issue, head to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn this option off. If it was on, then this was most likely your issue. If it was off already, proceed to the next fix.

5. Clear All Safari's Data

If you frequently use Safari, you might have a lot of data stored within the app, making it fail to load correctly. This is especially true if you're using an iPhone or iPad with a lower storage capacity. If you get low storage notifications, this fix could resolve your issue.

To clear Safari's data, head to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data . This will erase all extra data in the Safari app. Some users report this works, but you'll need to do it often if you can't eliminate storage space elsewhere on your iPhone.

6. Update iOS to the Latest Version

Some users have reported that updating iOS resolves issues with Safari. Whether Safari isn't loading, is crashing, or just isn't connecting to websites, try updating iOS on your iPhone .

Apple does a great job of fixing widespread issues with iOS updates. So, if there is an issue that Apple is aware of, it could get fixed by a subsequent update.

7. Reset Your Network Settings

If you've had issues with your network before, like not getting service or pages timing out, resetting your Network Settings could help.

To reset the Network Settings on your iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Reset > Reset Network Settings . This will reset only your Network Settings and won't erase any other data on your iPhone.

After you finish this, try opening Safari to see if it's working again. If not, proceed to the next fix.

8. Reset to Factory Default Settings

If all else fails, you can try resetting your iPhone to the default settings. This will erase all the data on your iPhone, and you'll have to set it up from scratch. However, this is also a very effective way to resolve all kinds of software problems. To do this, head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Erase All Content and Settings .

After resetting to the default settings, test out the Safari app before you install your usual apps. If Safari is working then but stops working when a certain app is installed, that means the app installed is interfering with Safari.

If Safari isn't working when you have a fresh install, make sure you didn't restore a backup of your iPhone or iPad . If you restored a backup, there could be something interfering with Safari that transferred over. If you reset your device without a backup and Safari still doesn't work, you can try one of the two last troubleshooting steps.

9. Turn On JavaScript

JavaScript is on by default on most iOS devices. However, if you're having issues with Safari, it's likely that JavaScript is off. Sometimes, one might turn JavsScript off as some websites might not support it.

If you've turned JavaScript off or want to check if it's off and turn it back on, head to Settings > Safari > Advanced on your iOS or iPadOS device.

10. Use an Alternative Browser

If the above fixes didn't work, then unfortunately, there might be an iOS bug with Safari, and you'll need to wait for the next update and hope it's patched. Until then, you can try using an alternative browser to access the internet on your device. There are many great browsers available in the App Store that can cater to your needs.

Be sure to check back for iOS updates and see if Apple has addressed the bug. You can also start a new discussion in the Apple Discussions Community to see if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.

Safari Not Working on Your iPhone or iPad? It's Most Likely a Software Issue

Cracked screens and broken buttons are easy to diagnose as we can instantly see what's wrong. But when Safari or other apps on your iPhone stop working, that usually means a software issue is at play.

You can usually fix these issues by updating iOS, changing your settings, or resetting your device. However, if the issue still isn't fixed after trying everything above, you might need to post in the Apple forum about your issue for more help.

You should also try disabling various Safari experimental features one-by-one. For that, go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Experimental features.

12. Change Wi-Fi DNS

Sometimes, the issue happens to a wrongly configured DNS server. You should change it to Google DNS and see if websites open in the Safari browser.

Step 2 : Tap on the (i) icon next to the problematic Wi-Fi. Tap on Configure DNS.

Safari is the go-to web browser for many iPhone and iPad users. Although the latest iOS 14 allows you to change the default web browser and mail app on the iPhone , Safari remains the most favored web browser for a majority of iPhone users. This is because of its powerful built-in privacy features, enhanced system integration, less power consumption, and other useful features.

Having said it, it’s equally important to know that like any other app, Safari may also behave unexpectedly sometimes. Many iOS users have reported Safari not working issues on their iPhones. Sometimes, the Safari app becomes unresponsive, loads slowly, or shuts down unexpectedly.

If you too are facing trouble in accessing Safari on your iPhone, here’s our troubleshooting guide that will help you fix Safari not working, not opening a page, or crashing issues. You can follow this guide to fix Safari problems on any iPhone model, including the older

iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone XR to the latest iPhone 12, 12 Mini , 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max . Plus, if you’ve got an iPhone 7, 7 Plus , or any other older model, the mentioned steps will work for them too.

Before we start with the list of solutions, let’s get to know some possible reasons why Safari is not working on your iPhone.

Why is Safari not working on my iPhone?

Some of the most common reasons when Safari is unable to load a page, crashes unexpectedly, freezes randomly, or lags include:

  • Poor network connection
  • Incorrect network settings
  • Software glitches
  • Running an older version of iOS.
  • Excessive data in the cache

Now, when we know the common reasons for Safari not responding or working properly on your iPhone, let’s get started with the list of solutions.

Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk, TechieTechTech will not be responsible if anything goes wrong with your device.

11 ways to fix Safari not working on iPhone

1. relaunch safari.

Relaunch Safari

If Safari is not working properly after an iOS update or if the app is not loading a page on your iPhone, you must quit Safari, and launch it again. It could be a system issue or some minor app glitches that are causing trouble in the smooth functioning of the Safari web browser on your iPhone. Such issues can be generally fixed by re-launching the app. Also, if you’ve got an older model like

iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone 8 Plus , it’s very common to face such issues with apps after you’ve updated iOS on your device. Re-launching the app is one of the easiest methods that can help you fix Safari not working problems on any iPhone.

Close tabs

It can be possible that you’ve opened too many tabs in the web browser, and this usually results in Safari crashing on your iPhone. If this happens to be your case, it’s extremely important to check the opened tabs in Safari. If you see multiple tabs, we recommend closing the tabs that you don’t need to release space.

Go to Safari, open the tab icon on the bottom-right corner, and click ‘X’ to close the tabs that you don’t need.

In short,  a reboot can wipe off any minor software glitches that are interfering with your iPhone or the apps.

Reboot iPhone X or later:

  • Press and hold either of the Volume keys and Side button until you see the power off slider.
  • Drag the slider, and wait for 30 seconds, to allow your device to turn OFF completely.
  • Now, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

5. Disable Experimental Features

Apple has several Experimental features that are designed for developers to debug web experiences within their apps. As these features are experimental, they may work properly and can cause minor software issues too. A regular user might not be familiar with these features. Apple also allows you to enable or disable these features as per your needs. Therefore, it’s better to disable the features that you don’t need. If you’ve enabled Experimental Features on your iPhone, you can disable them to figure out if they were the ones responsible for Safari crashing on your iPhone.

Here are the steps to disable Experimental features on iPhone:

1. Head to Settings

2. Scroll down and tap Safari

3. Go to the bottom and tap Advanced > Experimental Features

Disable Experimental Features on iPhone

4. Now, for all the features that are turned ON, try disabling them one by one, and check if Safari is working properly on your iPhone.

6. Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Search Engine Suggestions feature in Safari will ask your selected search engine for suggestions based on what you’ve typed. This feature is designed to offer better suggestions based on your usage patterns. Some users may like the Search Engine Suggestions feature, but if Safari keeps on crashing, or if you’re unable to open Safari on your iPhone, you can try disabling this feature. Sometimes, Search Engine Suggestions can also slow down Safari’s performance.

7. If you’re using a Wi-Fi network

If Safari is not working on your iPhone and you’re using a Wi-Fi network, there can be some issues with the Wi-Fi network and not your iPhone. To double-check, follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Toggle Wi-Fi

If you’re unable to access Safari on your iPhone, and you’re using a Wi-Fi network, just toggle the Wi-Fi switch to clear away any minor bugs that may be causing Wi-Fi issues on your device. If your iPhone can’t detect or connect to a Wi-Fi network, or your Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping, you may face issues with the Safari app. To fix these issues, toggle Wi-Fi on your iPhone.

Toggle Wi-Fi

Swipe down from the top-right of your screen to access the Control Center and tap the Wi-Fi icon . Wait for a few seconds ( around 5-10 seconds), then tap the icon again. Alternatively, you can go to

Settings > Wi-Fi

2. Re-connect to the Wi-Fi network

Sometimes, the connection parameters get changed on the wireless access point or the Wi-Fi network information gets corrupted on your iPhone. This can cause Wi-Fi issues on your device, which in turn, could leave you with Safari not working on Wi-Fi. To deal with such situations, you must delete the network information to refresh your device’s Wi-Fi connection. This will re-establish the connection between your iPhone and the Wi-Fi network. Plus, it also clears away the saved information on your phone that might be causing trouble with the authentication.

Make sure to remember the Wi-Fi password as you would have to enter that again to re-establish the connection to your Wi-Fi network.

1. Head to Settings > Wi-Fi

2. You get a list of all the Wi-Fi networks that you’ve added to your device.

3. Find the name of the Wi-Fi network you’re facing trouble with.

Re-connect to the Wi-Fi network

4. Tap the small info-icon.

5. Select Forget This Network

3. Restart Wi-Fi Router

Disconnect the Wi-Fi router and other networking equipment from the power source for at least 15-20 seconds. This will eliminate all the bugs in the network and give a fresh restart to the Wi-Fi router. In many cases, rebooting the Wi-Fi router can help fix the Wi-Fi issues on the iPhone and iPad, which ultimately resolves the issue of Safari not loading or unable to open page problems.

4. Use a different Wi-Fi network

If restarting the Wi-Fi router didn’t work for you, call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to fix the internet problem. Just for the time being, you can connect to a different Wi-Fi network or use a Wi-Fi hotspot from your family member’s or friend’s smartphone and check if you’re able to access Safari or not.

8. If you’re using Mobile Data

Follow the steps mentioned to fix Safari not working on cellular data on your iPhone:

1. Check if you’ve turned ON Cellular Data for Safari

If you’re using mobile data to access Safari on your iPhone, make sure that you’ve allowed Safari to access data on your device. There can be instances when you’ve mistakenly disabled mobile data for Safari. If you’ve done so, Safari will only work when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, and not on mobile data.

Check if you’ve turned ON Cellular Data for Safari

Head to Settings > Mobile Data , scroll down, and check if you’ve turned the slider ON next to Safari .

2. Toggle Mobile Data

This super-quick method works really well if you’re facing any internet-related issues on your device. It also helps fix Safari not loading issues on your iPhone. When you toggle mobile data, it will wipe off any minor network errors on your iPhone. It has helped me fix Safari not working issues on my iPhone 11 quite a few times, therefore, make sure that you try this method as well.

Follow either of the methods to toggle Mobile data on your iPhone.

1. Swipe down from the top-right of your screen to access the Control Center . Now, tap the Mobile Data icon . Wait for 5-10 seconds, then tap the icon again.

Toggle Mobile Data

2. Go to Settings > Mobile Data and turn the slider OFF for Mobile Data. Wait for 5-10 seconds, then turn the slider ON.

3. Check your data plan .

It can be possible that Safari is not working on cellular data because you’ve run out of data. To be on the safer side, check your data plan on your mobile carrier’s official app or try to open WhatsApp, Instagram, or any other app on your iPhone. If

Instagram or WhatsApp is not working on your iPhone , there are high chances that you’ve run out of mobile data. In case you’re sure that you have sufficient data, it’s time to check for cellular network issues.

4. Check for Network issues

Network or Data issues could be an underlying cause for Safari not opening or working issues on your iPhone. To double-check, you can ask your family member or a friend who’s on the same network, and verify if he/she can use Safari or not. If they are also facing the same issues, there could be some network issues. In such a case, you can either wait for some time and then check if the issue has been fixed or switch to a Wi-Fi network (if available).

5. Check if APN Settings are configured properly on your iPhone

APN (Access Point Network) defines the network path for all mobile-data connectivity. If you’ve checked everything and are still not able to use mobile data on your iPhone, then you must contact your service provider and verify if the APN settings are properly configured on your iPhone. It’s worth-knowing that the users who’re using an unlocked iPhone or a prepaid SIM card might need to adjust the APN settings for their SIM card. If this happens to be your case, don’t forget to contact your service provider and ask for the details.

6. Switch to a Wi-Fi network

If a Wi-Fi network is available, you can try switching to it, and check if Safari is working on your iPhone. If you’re still facing the same problem, follow the other methods to fix Safari not working, opening, or crashing issues on your iPhone.

9. Clear Cache, History, and Website data

When you don’t delete cache files for a long time, they can pile up, and cause problems on your web browser. If Safari is taking too long to load a page on your iPhone, or if it gets unresponsive, you must clear cache, history, and website data on your device. It will eliminate errors, make Safari run smoothly, and also improve the overall performance of your iPhone. It’s an effective solution in fixing many Safari-related issues on the iPhone.

Once you reset all settings on your iPhone, your device will load up the default settings. The  iPhone's  Safari browser is usually fast and reliable but problems can arise even with  Apple's  best flagship smartphone. Few things are as frustrating as trying to open a webpage for a quick search and have something go wrong at the moment it's most needed. Thankfully, there are several solutions to try that might get the iPhone's browser working again quickly.

The mobile Safari browser has evolved greatly over the years and the locations of various controls have changed recently. The basics remain and it is usually quite easy to open any website with a few taps. Every new tab opens with a customizable selection of shortcuts and favorites appear when tapping the search bar. Of course, that ease is spoiled if web pages aren't loading correctly.

Related: How To Easily Find Safari Tabs On Your iPhone

If Safari isn't working right on an iPhone, a website might not load or the browser could crash unexpectedly. If the app stays open but webpages never load, it could be an internet problem. A quick fix might be to toggle Airplane mode on and off again to disconnect and reconnect to the internet. This can be done by swiping down from the upper-right and tapping the Airplane icon in the Control Center, pausing, and tapping again.  Apple  suggests trying a different Wi-Fi network and for more serious problems, like Safari crashing, turning the iPhone off and on to give it a fresh start might help . For an iPhone X, 11, 12, or 13, pressing and holding the side button and either volume button will power it off. For other iPhone models, hold the side button or top button to turn it off.

More iPhone Safari Fixes

Clearing website data might help with iPhone Safari trouble if the problem is with a particular website. The user should open the Settings app, scroll down and open the Safari tab, then tap  Clear History and Website data . This will delete any corruption in the data that might be causing a problem. If the problem persists, the issue might be with that website and not something that is related to the iPhone. Checking several other websites and trying again later will help verify if it is a temporary website issue.

Over time, iOS needs to be updated and if it hasn't been brought up to the latest version for quite some time, that could result in several problems, including websites crashing or failing to load properly. In the Settings app, the user should open the General tab, tap  Software Update  and install any that are available. The latest version of Safari is included in new iOS software and the iPhone needs to be updated regularly to install important security updates and bug fixes.

Safari Not Working On iPhone? Here’s a Complete Fix

Many iOS users prefer using Safari for browsing and web surfing. It’s because this web browser drains the least resources as compared to other browsers. However, fixing the Safari not working on the iPhone issue might be challenging when you don’t know the actual problem.

That issue doesn’t allow you to browse anything on Safari. Also, sometimes you can’t even open the app.

Therefore, this post will guide you on how to fix “Safari not working on iPhone” issues.

Table of Contents

Why is My Safari on My iPhone Not Working?

There are several reasons why the Safari browser is not working on your iPhone. The most common ones might be

  • Weak Wi-Fi Network
  • Full Browser’s Storage
  • iOS Device Outdated Software

No doubt, there might be other reasons behind Safari not working on iPhones. Unfortunately, you can’t diagnose the actual problem every time. We’ll try several methods to fix your iPhone’s Safari browser.

Ways to Fix Safari on iPhone

First, you should know whether the issues reside in your iPhone, internet connection, or Safari browser. To diagnose that, let’s perform a test.

Reboot iPhone

It resolves minor bugs when you soft reset, restart or reboot an iPhone. These bugs impede the connectivity between the mobile device, apps, and the Wi-Fi network.

Therefore, let’s begin with restarting your iPhone.

Normal Restart iPhone

  • Press and hold the volume up OR down button with the side (lock screen) button until a slider appears.
  • Drag the “Slide to power off” slider. You will iPhone will instantly shut down.
  • Now, wait for at least 30 seconds until internal settings refresh.
  • After that, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  • Wait again till your iPhone ultimately starts.

Force Restart iPhone

If you can’t restart your iPhone in the usual way, try the force method.

  • Press the volume up button and release it.
  • Then, press the volume down button and release it.
  • Keep pressing the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen. That means your iPhone is getting restarted.

Besides, the iPhone restart methods vary with different iPhone models. You can check the detailed Apple guide  here  on iPhone restart.

Once your iPhone is ready, launch the Safari app and try loading web pages. If the problem is fixed, that means your iPhone was at fault.

However, perform the next test if the issue persists.

Test Internet

Sometimes your internet service provider (ISP) encounters a server issue and stops providing you with an interrupted internet connection. That’s when you can’t load pages on the Safari browser.

Therefore, you have to check whether you are getting stable internet.

Check Router

  • First, check the status of the internet from the router. Make sure the internet LED is solid green/blue (depending on the router.)
  • If the router is not transmitting internet to your devices, perform a power cycle on it.
  • Unplug the router’s power cable.
  • Wait for 10 seconds.
  • Plug back in the power cord.
  • Now, test rerunning the Safari app on your iPhone.

If the issue persists, try connecting your iPhone to a different Wi-Fi connection.

Connect to Different Network

  • Connect to any other Wi-Fi network by selecting a different SSID.
  • Enter the password.
  • Try loading web pages.

If the Safari app is working, that means your router is faulty. Therefore, please take it to the networking hardware repair shop and let the experts fix your router.

Run a Different App

Another internet connection test you can perform is by running an online app other than Safari. For example, launch Facebook or YouTube on your iPhone. The internet works fine if these apps successfully load feeds and stream videos.

Therefore, now you have to fix Safari by making tweaks in some of the default settings.

Mobile Data for Safari App

You can try running Safari on your mobile or cellular data. That will confirm if the Safari app is at fault or not.

However, you must ensure that you have allowed Safari to use mobile data. iPhone and other smartphones have a data-saving feature enabled by default. Unfortunately, that feature doesn’t allow the apps to work unless you connect to a stable Wi-Fi network.

This feature undoubtedly helps you save data and extends the time reaching the data usage limit. But if Safari is not working on the iPhone issue that is bothering you, give permission to this browsing app and check whether it’s working now on cellular data.

Allow Safari App for Mobile Data

  • Open Settings.
  • Go to Mobile Data.
  • Turn on Mobile Data. On the same page, you will see a list of apps and a toggle in front of them.
  • Find Safari and turn that toggle on. That means you have granted permission to Safari to use mobile data.

safari browser not working on iphone

Besides, make sure you have enough cellular data on your iPhone. Although browsing doesn’t utilize much data, the Safari app will not work if you have reached the monthly data usage limit.

That’s why it’s recommended to recharge your mobile data and then perform this method.

Experimental Features of Safari

Apple launched new experimental features in Safari with the latest updates. These features give access to:

  • Use New Web Tools
  • Adjust Web Behavior
  • Test New Features

Moreover, changing the Safari experimental features is good only if you are associated with the web development team and working on such a project. Also, you can change the experimental features if you use a particular web application that needs such modifications.

Since most users are not concerned with such technicalities, it’s recommended to one by one disable these features.

Disable Experimental Features

No doubt, disabling any Safari feature can either solve the problem or make it worse. So the easiest method is to disable one feature, run Safari and check its performance.

If disabling that one feature solves the problem, you don’t need to enable/disable any other feature. If it doesn’t, repeat the same steps with the other features.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Safari.
  • Go to Advanced.
  • Tap Experimental Features at the end. You will see a list of features. Some of them are enabled, and some are disabled.
  • You must enable/disable each feature and keep repeating the step unless the Safari app starts working properly.

safari browser not working on iphone

This method is critical because you don’t know what each experimental feature is capable of.

Besides, be careful while performing this method. Don’t rush because a small mistake can worsen the situation.

After completing this method, the Safari issues are supposed to get resolved. However, you might have to reset the network settings if the Safari app is still not working properly.

Reset Network Settings

Before resetting the network settings, you have to try the following step:

  • First, turn off the WiFi on your phone and turn it back again.
  • Next, launch Safari and check if the issue is resolved.
  • Next, connect your iPhone to any other Wi-Fi network and try running Safari.
  • Again, turn off mobile data and then turn it on. Now, run Safari and check if it’s performing okay.

After that, it’s time to reset the network settings.

Reset Network Settings on Your iPhone

  • Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  • Select Reset Network Settings.
  • A confirmation prompt will show up. Tap Reset and let your iPhone reset its network settings.

Remember that when you reset a phone’s network settings, all the network data will be lost.

For example, all the saved WiFi passwords, Bluetooth connections, VPN, and will be reset. Therefore, you have to pair your iPhone with particular connections again.

What will you do if Safari is not opening on your iPhone?

Safari Keeps Crashing

When you open Safari on your iPhone, it shows the logo screen and instantly crashes. That usually happens with other apps as well. But why?

It’s because the browser or the website data has almost reached its limit. Therefore, you have to perform the following action:

  • Clear Safari History
  • Disable Search Engine Suggestions Feature

Clear History and Website Data

Browsers tend to save data to enhance user experience. No doubt, that’s not a huge amount of data. But if you don’t frequently keep clearing the website data, it will clutter the Safari storage. So when you open Safari, it will crash.

Therefore, let’s clear the Safari app’s browsing history and website data.

  • Find and select the option “Clear History and Website Data.”
  • Next, tap Clear History and Data.

safari browser not working on iphone

This method will remove the entire history and website data from the Safari directory.

Now, if you want to keep the browser history and remove only website data, follow these steps:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Now go to Advanced > Website Data.
  • Tap Remove All Website Data.
  • Tap Remove Now.

safari browser not working on iphone

If you want to remove only a specific period of browsing history , follow these steps:

  • Open Safari.
  • Tap the History Tab (Bookmark icon or a clock icon at some places.)
  • Now, select the period from when you want to clear the Safari browsing history, cache, and website data.

safari browser not working on iphone

Now run Safari on your iPhone and check its performance.

However, it’s possible that clearing Safari browsing history might not have resolved the app crashing issue.

That’s why let’s try the next method.

Disable Search Engine Suggestions

You can use the Safari suggestions feature to enhance your search engine’s performance. These search engine suggestions help you browse more efficiently.

But since this feature utilizes more resources, you might have to disable it.

Therefore, follow these steps to disable the Safari suggestions feature:

  • Open Settings
  • Go to Safari
  • In the Search section, turn off Search Engine Suggestions

safari browser not working on iphone

Now launch the app, and you will not see any Safari suggestions.

Update iOS Device

Many users complained that Safari is not working properly even after trying all the above fixes. Therefore, you have to check for software updates on your iOS device.

Follow these steps to update your iPhone:

  • Tap General.
  • Tap Software Update. If the latest version of iOS is available, you will find it here.
  • Select Install Now.

After your iPhone has installed the latest iOS, launch Safari and check its performance.

Why Has Safari Suddenly Stopped Working?

That might happened due to

  • Full Device Storage
  • Safari App Crash

How Do I Reset Safari on My iPhone?

  • Uninstall Safari.
  • Reinstall it from Apple Store.

However, contact Apple support if you face the same issue after trying all the methods. They will fix Safari for you.

Why is My Safari Not Responding?

Some features of Safari (Safari suggestions etc.) are making the app slow or unresponsive. So you have to try enabling/disabling them.

Try all the above methods to solve the Safari not working issue. Also, you can get help from Apple support to fix Safari. That way, you can enjoy a seamless browsing experience again with the Safari app.

How to fix websites not loading in Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad

Learn what to do if you can’t open all or any specific website in Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. These tips will also help if you can’t visit a site in other browsers like Chrome or Firefox.

Safari not working and failing to load a website on Mac

1. Turn off Safari’s advanced tracking

Hiding your IP address and preventing tracking in Safari may not play well with all sites. For instance, Twitter’s login page recently kept refusing to load in Safari on my Mac. Similarly, some web pages might refuse to load in Safari on iPhone, and you would see a Reduce Protections button on top.

Reduce Protections alert in Safari on iPhone

If you’ve enabled all Safari protections, it may be time to disable them temporarily. To do that, open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. Next, go to the Privacy heading and stop hiding your IP address from websites by unchecking the “ Hide IP address ” box or setting it to “ from Trackers only .”

Hide IP address from Trackers Only in Safari on Mac

After that, go to the Advanced tab and set “Use advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection” to “ in Private Browsing ” (instead of “in all browsing”) or uncheck Privacy altogether.

Turn off Privacy in Safari Advanced settings on Mac

You will also find these options in iPhone/iPad Settings > Safari > Hide IP Address . After that, tap Advanced at the bottom of the Safari settings screen and set Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection to “ Private Browsing ” or “ Off .”

2. Switch off iCloud Private Relay

Private Relay is offered with an iCloud+ or Apple One paid subscription, and it’s there to secure your browsing. However, it can sometimes cause issues. For instance, certain websites or specific pages of a site may not load.

If find yourself in such a situation, head over to Settings / System Settings > your name or Apple ID from the top > iCloud > Private Relay and turn off Private Relay  temporarily.

Private Relay turned off on Mac

3. Check the URL

If you are trying to go to a website and you type the URL completely wrong, then your web browser will probably fail to load the site. For example, make sure you use three Ws ( www ) in the URL where relevant, and also make sure you only use https:// where relevant, as some sites only use the basic http:// instead. Also, make sure the meat and potatoes of the URL are correct, as a wrong URL can direct you to an incorrect website or to no website at all.

Tip: Take proper caution if you’re visiting a site that has an address like 192.168.1.7:88 . Usually, these sites have http:// in the beginning. For example: http://192.168.1.7:8888/

4. Refresh the page

Sometimes, a hiccup in the loading process occurs. If the page doesn’t load the first time, try refreshing it one, two, or maybe three more times. Website host servers aren’t always as stable as you’d like them to be, and you can sometimes get through after the second or third try.

5. Revisit the page

I have noticed this several times on my iPhone. When you tap a web link in some app, it will open Safari but won’t load the website. To fix this annoying issue, simply go back to the other application and tap the link again. This time, it will load in Safari.

6. Use Safari instead of the in-app browser

When you tap a link inside apps like Twitter, it doesn’t open Safari but loads the site inside its integrated Safari browser. Sometimes, a website may not load here properly. To fix this, tap the tiny Safari button to open this link in the actual Safari browser.

Use Safari instead of the in-app browser

7. Try loading another website

Check if you can load a different website other than the one you’re having issues with. If the second website loads, it could mean the first is experiencing maintenance, heavy traffic, or some other fluke. This would mean the problem is the website itself, and there’s nothing you can really do to fix the problem besides wait a little longer before trying again.

8. Try another web browser

It’s also possible that the web browser you’re using is incompatible with the website you’re using. In some cases, some web browsers will render HTML or CSS in different ways than others, and such can actually break websites in some browsers. Try another web browser, such as Chrome or Firefox , and see if the page loads properly this time.

9. Check that you’re connected to Wi-Fi

You should always check to see whether or not your internet connection is working because a website will never load if your computer can’t establish a line of communication. You can go to the Wi-Fi icon in your Mac’s Menu Bar to see if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. Obviously, if you aren’t, you’ll have to connect to one before the page loads.

Also, remember that moving too far away from the network you were just on will drop the connection. This is common around school campuses where you’re walking around or moving from room to room quite often.

10. Make sure your internet is active

By clicking on the Wi-Fi Settings… or Open Network Preferences… button in Mac’s Wi-Fi menu, you can see whether or not your computer has an IP address on the network you’re on, as well as whether or not it has established a successful connection with the internet.

If you see a yellow or red dot instead of a green dot, you have a problem that needs to be fixed before you can access the internet. This could be with the network itself or your computer. Continue through the steps below if the dot next to Wi-Fi isn’t green.

Green dot for Wi-Fi on Mac

11. Enable and disable Airplane mode

On Mac, if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network and are still unable to load a page, try turning your Wi-Fi off and on again from the Wi-Fi settings in your menu bar.

On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center and tap the Airplane mode button to enable it. After 10 seconds, tap the same button to turn it off.

Airplane mode on and off on iPhone

Once done, try visiting the website, and it should work.

12. Check the Ethernet cable

On Macs that have a wired connection via Ethernet, make sure the cable is plugged in and that it didn’t get knocked loose. Try another Ethernet cable, if you have one, to see if your current cable has gone bad. If you’re using a USB-C hub, make sure it isn’t too hot. And if it is, stop using it until it cools down.

13. Restart your device

It’s possible that a piece of software on your computer or iPhone is bugging out, so you might want to try rebooting your computer if none of the above steps worked. After it restarts, attempt to connect once again.

14. Restart the wireless router

If possible, reset the wireless router and modem. By doing so, any problem that might have been related to the source of the internet should be fixed.

15. Renew your DHCP lease

Sometimes, your IP address could get messed up and conflict with another device on your network. When this happens, you will be unable to load web pages. We have a detailed tutorial for how to renew your DHCP lease to fix this problem.

16. Remove all website data

If you have corrupted website data stored in your web browser, then Safari might be trying to load information that will lead it into a loop of failures time and time again.

Here’s how you can remove all Safari data:

  • Open Safari and then click the word Safari from the top menu bar and choose Settings or Preferences .
  • Go to Privacy and click Manage Website Data .
  • Finally, click Remove All .

Remove all Safari data on Mac

  • Open the Settings app and go to Safari .
  • Tap Clear History and Website Data .

Clear History and Website Data for Safari on iPhone

This will delete all saved website data you have and let you re-load fresh data.

17. Turn off ad blockers or browser extensions

I’ve seen many cases where a website refuses to load until you disable your ad blockers. Try disabling any ad blockers or other browser extensions that might be hindering the web page from loading, then attempt to load the page again.

18. Disable security software

Some security software and firewalls have been known to block access to certain websites because they think they’re malicious. In some cases, this is true, but in others, false positives make the software block access to these websites even when you don’t want them to. If you trust the website you’re trying to visit, you can attempt to disable your security software and load the page again.

19. Disable VPN software

A few VPN s, just like security software, block access to some websites. If you have a VPN running, try disabling the VPN and try again.

20. Sometimes, you’ll have to use a VPN

If a website is blocked in your country by the authorities, you’ll have to use a VPN to access it.

21. Use a different ISP

I have also noticed this situation a few times where a particular website won’t load on my specific cellular network. But if I switch to a different cellular network (I use dual SIM on my iPhone), then it loads.

In most cases, you can also access that website using a VPN (without changing to a different internet provider).

22. Change your DNS server settings

If you haven’t already changed your stock DNS server settings to a better one, we have an excellent tutorial on how to do that .

Google’s DNS server always works quickly and has nearly no downtime, so switching to it could fix your problem or help the website load more quickly on your machine.

23. Still not working? Contact the website admin

If after everything above, and after waiting a little while to rule out that it was a website-based problem, try contacting the website administrator to see if there are any underlying problems that could be fixed.

safari browser not working on iphone

Safari is an outstanding web browser that renders a seamless experience to Apple users. It has been top-notch, fast, and efficient since its launch in 2003! However, does it mean you are unlikely to face any glitches with the same? Not really!

In fact, Safari not working on iPhone 13 is a common issue among users. There can be multiple reasons behind it, starting from technical glitches to network issues. Fortunately, you can fix them!

If you are encountering a similar problem with your Safari on iPhone 13, then stay put. As today we will be discussing some troubleshooting methods that worked like a charm for other users. We will also talk about the reason behind these issues to familiarise you with its root cause. So, let's start:

Part 1: Why is Safari not working on iPhone 13?

Part 2: 11 tips to fix safari not working on iphone 13.

Before solving the issues, it's important to identify the reason behind its cause. Once you recognize the root cause of the problem, solving them will be like a piece of cake. Make sure to check what error messages you are encountering while using the browser. Generally, users face issues where their iPhone 13 Safari does not connect to the internet or crash/freeze. Once you know the error, go through the list below and see whether any of these can be the reason:

  • Bad WiFi connection
  • Incorrect URL input
  • Websites blocked by DNS server
  • Incompatibility with a cellular data provider
  • A restricted page (if a page is not loading)
  • Too much cache memory.

Now that you know the reason behind these issues let's get solving. Keep note that not every method will work for your problem. Thus, if a particular method does not work; try the next one:

#1 Check WiFi Connection and Change DNS Server

WiFi connectivity and unstable internet connections are the most common reasons behind Safari issues on iPhone 13. It may cause glitches and result in page loading failures. Thus, check for the WiFi connection and see if the internet is strong. You can open a website and check whether it's loading fast. If the speed seems slow, try modifying the DNS server setting on your iPhone 13. That's because the DNS server on your iPhone 13 can revive the speed and ensure better connectivity. Here's how you can modify the DNS server on your device

  • Navigate to Settings and then WiFi.
  • Look for the ' i ' button near your WiFi network connection.
  • Select the "Configure DNS" option and then tap on Manual.
  • Now, go to the "Add server" option and enter the Google DNS server (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4).
  • Save your changes

wifi connection and dns server

#2 Check for Data Plan Run Outs

Safari is unlikely to work if you are out of your data plan. That's why it's always recommended to use WiFi when using Safari. To check for data run out, see whether applications (like Whatsapp or Instagram) are working fine on your iPhone 13. If it does not, you may be out of your mobile data. To resolve this issue, wait for some time and try again. If the problem persists, switch to a WiFi network (if available).

#3 Check Content Restrictions If the Page Is Not Loading

You should also check for content restriction placements if a particular page is not loading on your iPhone 13 Safari. That's because iPhone 13 renders features where you can block websites. This may cause page-loading issues in the future. Follow the below steps to resolve the problem:

  • Go to Settings and then navigate to Screen Time.
  • From there, select Content & Privacy Restrictions and then tap on Web Content.
  • Look for the list of websites in the "Never Allow" section. If you see the same URL that isn't loading, then it's restricted. Make sure to remove it from the list.

#4 Clear Cache Files and Cookies

Unnecessary cache files can take memory space and cause Safari issues on your iPhone 13. Thus, remove all the cache memory and cookie and see if it works for you.

  • Go to Settings and then select Safari.
  • Now, choose the "'Clear History and Website Data" option.
  • This will delete all the cookies and cached memory from Safari.

#5 Check if You Have Opened Multiple Safari Tabs

Check your Safari browser for multiple tab openings. If you have opened too many Safari tabs on your browser, it's likely to crash. Likewise, it can also fill up your memory storage and cause slow browser performance or sudden shutdowns. You can check for opened tabs on Safari by following steps:

  • Navigate to Safari and select the tab icon on the bottom-ride side of your screen.
  • Click on the "X" or close option to close the unnecessary tabs.

check for multiple safari tabs

#6 Turn Off Experimental features

Safari offers experimental features that can cause page loading issues. These features can interfere with the working principle of the device and can generate errors. Thus, try turning them off and see if it works for you:

  • Go to Settings and then the Safari menu.
  • Press the Safari option and then tap on Advanced (lower side of the page)
  • Tap on the "Experimental Features" option and turn them off.

#7 Restart Your iPhone 13

Sometimes iPhone 13 Safari issues may occur due to temporary glitches that fade away after a quick restart. So, restart your device and see if it works for you:

  • Press and hold both the volume down and side buttons together, unless the "Slide to Power Off" button appears.
  • Once it does, slide the button to the right. This will shut down your iPhone 13.
  • Now, wait for a few seconds and then hold the side button. Let the Apple logo appear. Once it does, release the side button. Your iPhone 13 will restart.

restart iphone 13

#8 Restart Wi-Fi Router

If the issue is related to connectivity, make sure to restart the WiFi router. For that, disconnect the WiFi router from the networking equipment. Now, wait for some time and connect it again. This method can remove all the bugs from the network and ensure a fresh start. It's also effective in resolving page loading problems of Safari.

#9 Toggle Mobile Data on iPhone 13

While this may seem ridiculous, the method has been effective in resolving Safari issues for cellular data users. It can eliminate any technical glitches and ensure a smooth running of Safari. You can follow the below steps to toggle mobile data on iPhone 13:

  • Navigate to Settings and then tap on the Cellular option. Turn off the toggle for Cellular data. Wait for some seconds, and then turn it back on.

#10 Force Quit Your iPhone 13

You can also force quit your device if a simple restart does not work. It's recommended to try this method if Safari stops responding. By following this method, all the glitches will vanish and you can start afresh. Follow the below steps to force quit your device

  • Press and release both volume up/down buttons.
  • Now, press the side button of your iPhone 13 and hold it for a while.
  • Do not respond to the "Slide to Power Off" option. Keep pressing the side button unless the Apple logo appears. Once it does, release the side button and let the device restart.

#11 Enter the correct URL

If you are facing problems while accessing a site, check whether the URL is entered correctly or not. This is recommended for those who enter the URL conventionally. An incorrect or incomplete URL can prevent a page from opening and cause Safari issues on your iPhone 13.

Safari's Reader mode is improved in iOS 18, even without Apple Intelligence

William Gallagher's Avatar

The new Reader options on iPhone

safari browser not working on iphone

Apple has announced that Safari 's Reader mode, where all website distractions are removed so that you can read articles more easily, will be getting two specific updates. They are an automatic summary of an article, and also a contents page for longer ones — both done by Apple Intelligence.

There is no Apple Intelligence in the first developer beta of any of Apple's OSes, but Safari's Reader mode has been improved. While AppleInsider will revisit Reader after Apple Intelligence arrives, there are already new benefits to the feature including quicker access to options.

What Reader does in Safari

On a website that chiefly has articles or text on it, you can turn on Safari's Reader mode. This switches to a view of the web page that aimed to provide solely the text and images, no ads or videos, no pop-ups, and so on.

What hasn't changed, and can't, is that this is Safari's best attempt at cutting out distractions for you. Depending on the site, it may fail to work at all, for instance.

Or commonly it will show what appears to be a complete website page, but the site has really split its article up over many more pages.

The Apple Intelligence summary and contents page is going to be an attempt to address some of these issues.

But for now, Apple has made going into Reader mode quicker, and made it easier to customize what you see when you're in it.

What's new in Reader on macOS Sequoia

  • Browse to a website in Safari
  • Click the new icon to the left in the address bar
  • Click on Show Reader from the short pop-up menu

That short menu also includes the ability to change the zoom percentage on text, and to alter some website settings. It's also got the option tofind items on the page, though it's not clear why this is Find where the same function on iPhone and iPad is Search .

Webpage displayed on Safari browser, showing an article about Apple Intelligence. Reader mode prompt is highlighted, with options for text size, find, and website settings.

Once you've chosen Show Reader , you can click again on that new icon in the address bar. This now gives you a longer drop-down that adds font and page color options.

What's new in Reader on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

  • In Safari for iPhone or iPad, go to any primarily text-based website
  • Tap the new icon in the address bar
  • Choose Show Reader
  • Tap the same address bar icon again
  • Use Reader's new controls for font, size, color
  • Or use Search within Reader

The font option is a further drop-down list on iPad and iPhone, while as with the Mac , the choice of color is a series of four buttons. There's white, sepia, gray, and black, and tapping on any of those changes the whole look of the page.

Also in this dropdown, there is now a Listen to Page option. Tap that to hear Siri read out all of the text.

Reader search and settings

Search and font size controls are now buttons in the top row of the drop-down menu on the iPhone and iPad. There's also an ellipses icon in that row, which gets you many more options.

Most of those are to do with Safari features, such as adding to favorites. But if you scroll toward the bottom, there is also an option called Use Reader Automatically .

If there is a site that you are forever turning to Reader mode to escape an ad barrage, turn this on. Whenever you visit this site, it will solely show you articles in Reader mode.

Note, though, that it does this with articles. You'll still see the normal view of a page like a news site's headlines one.

The last option that is always available, is Hide Reader . This turns off the feature and returns you to the original view of the site.

There is one more thing, which is only on the iPhone. It's called Manage Extensions, and will allow you to turn on or off an Safari extensions you have installed.

Those could include ad blockers, for instance, which might make a page more readable without going into Reader mode.

All of this sounds like a brute-force way to stop websites being paid by advertisers. When the site is so overloaded with pop-ups that it's hard to read, though, this will help.

It should also help with screen-readers for visually impaired readers.

Plus the forthcoming Apple Intelligence features like summarizing the page will mean you can determine quicker whether this is a site you want to read.

iOS 18 will let you use Apple Pay on any browser on any PC

lance-31.png

Apple Pay has always been limited to just Apple mobile devices and Safari on the Mac. With iOS 18, however, Apple is expanding its popular payment process so that you'll be able to use it in a lot more places.

In a WWDC 2024 developer session on Thursday spotted by MacRumors , Apple revealed the latest upcoming updates to Apple Pay on the web. With iOS 18 installed on your iPhone, you'll be able to use Apple Pay in non-Safari browsers such as Chrome, Edge, and Firefox both on Macs and Windows PCs.

Also: The best MagSafe wallets you can buy: Expert tested

Here's how this will work.

Let's say you're purchasing items at a retail website using a non-Safari browser. You see the Apple Pay button at the checkout page, but you can't directly use it to pay for your items. Clicking the button will display a code that you scan with the camera on your iOS 18-enabled iPhone. You can then finish paying directly on your iPhone.

Of course, the website needs to support Apple Pay as a payment method. This means the website's developer will have to work with the latest Apple SDK to set up the process, which the WWDC session explains in detail.

Since iOS 18 is currently available as a developer beta, this type of support is likely to take a while to catch on. Once it does, however, you'll no longer be restricted to where and how you can use Apple Pay.

Launched in 2014 , Apple Pay has become a popular and ubiquitous form of payment among Apple users, both online and at physical stores. Over the years, Apple has added new Apple Pay features and expanded support for additional countries, banks, and retailers.

Also:  How to use Apple Pay in stores and online

As an iPhone owner, I use Apple Pay in most situations where I would've otherwise used cash or a credit card. I find it especially handy to use it with Apple Wallet to pay for subway and other transit fare , both in the US and in Europe.

Apple plans to release iOS 18 sometime in the fall, at which time we should see more websites set up access for the new Apple Pay on the web.

Apple kills its Apple Pay Later service, but has another option in the works

Ios 18 makes this once complicated iphone feature much more user-friendly (and i'm a fan), every iphone model that will support apple's upcoming ai features (for now).

Update your iPhone, iPad and Mac! New patch fixes nasty Safari issue

By Kim Komando

apple iphone ios update

You’d like to think your browser prioritizes privacy. Unfortunately, sometimes our search providers let us down. Tap or click here to take a free, fast test that reveals how much private data our browser is leaking .

Last week, security researchers discovered that Apple’s Safari browser could leak your data to websites you visit. It all comes down to an implementation bug in IndexedDB, designed to hold user data.

Put simply, the bug lets websites see databases they shouldn’t. It also lets them search those databases for information like your browsing history, personal data and even your Google avatar. Luckily, Apple released a new update that fixes this privacy-endangering bug.

Patch the bug ASAP

Don’t wait to update. There’s a lot of personal information at risk. Not only is this bug an invasion of your privacy, but it also lets hackers see your browsing activity in real-time .

If you want to go into the weeds and get a technical understanding of how this works, check out this short video from FingerprintJS , the folks who blew the whistle on Jan. 14.

Fun fact: Someone reported the issue to the WebKit Bug Tracker on Nov. 28, 2021. Apple didn’t take action until Jan. 16 — after FingerprintJS shone a spotlight on the issue. (How curious.)

You can even run a quick test to see the problem in action

Head to  Safari Leaks and see if the site can grab your Google User ID. You can even check out one of its test websites in a new tab. Return to the site and you’ll see that browsing history. It can be creepy to see the surveillance in real-time.

RELATED : Is someone spying on your cellphone?

Typically, this shouldn’t be possible. When Safari is working correctly, Safari Leaks would have no way to find this information. That’s because sites are only supposed to access data from their databases. (Or to be super technical, databases its domain created.)

How to fix the bug

To protect yourself, update your Apple devices. Apple released a few updates:

  • iPhone: iOS 15.3
  • iPad: iPadOS 15.3
  • Mac: macOS 12.2
  • Apple Watch: watchOS 8.4

Install the latest OS onto whichever Apple device you’re using. To do this, follow these steps:

How to update iPhone, iPad or iPad touch

  • Open  Settings .
  • Tap  General .
  • Select  Software Update .
  • Tap  Install Now .

Instead of  Install Now,  you might see  Download and Install . If so, select that option to download the update. Then, enter your passcode and select  Install Now .

How to update macOS

  • Click on the  Apple menu  in the corner of your screen.
  • Select  System Preferences .
  • Click  Software Update .
  • Select  Update Now .

How to update Apple Watch

  • Open  Settings  on your  Apple Watch .
  • Tap  Software Update .
  • Tap  Install .
  • Open the  Watch  app on your iPhone and agree to the Terms & Conditions.
  • On your  Apple Watch , tap  Download &   Install .

Good news: You’re doing a lot of good when you download the update. Not only are you fixing this bug, but you’re also downloading security updates for iCloud, Crash Reporter, ColorSync and more. Here’s the complete list of updates you’re getting when you download iOS 15.3 .

I'm glad someone else is having this problem. For some reason a few days ago Instagram won't load my profile page or and other pages/searches, all I see is the home page. It would be good if I could find a solution. I've tried different browsers, removed cookies and re-booted my Mac all with no effect.

  • iMac: some websites won't open in Safari after Big Sur 11.3 update I started a similar thread already and marked it "solved" because I was having the same issue on both my MacBook Air and my iMac running Big Sur 11.3. In Safari certain websites weren't opening, most notably is Facebook. The suggestion was made to reboot in Safe Mode and try the websites, and if they worked in Safe Mode, reboot and they should then work. This method worked for my MacBook Air (so I marked the last thread "solved" as I assumed wrongly that this would work with my iMac also), but it did not work for my iMac. So for the iMac I reinstalled the system (Big Sur 11.3), then, after realizing those websites still didn't work, I again rebooted in Safe Mode, and they still didn't open. Strange because they work fine in Opera. Any suggestions? 451 2

I can't make it go back to the desktop site even when I change the user agent, or go in private mode. I've tried clearing history, cache, data, and rebooted many times. How do I fix this? Also, it's not a problem for other users on this mac. Also not a problem with other browser like Chrome. 357 1

Has anyone found a solution?

Mar 1, 2024 6:04 AM in response to iamlahila

Hi Yes, my issue is that I can see the main page of instagram but can not load my profile, search or see any reels. I've tried different browsers, Safari, Firefox, Duck Duck Go all did the same. Google Chrome was the only browser that fully worked for me, which whilst it works I'd prefer to stay with Safari.

Mar 3, 2024 6:43 AM in response to krysta1996_

Same problem here, noticed at about the same time several days ago. I can access the main Instagram home page in safari, but can't do a next step like looking at any stories, my profile, etc. - it just hangs. I tried everything (clear cache, restart mac, restart router, etc.). It works fine on the Brave browser.

I'm using Safari 15.6.1 on Mac OS Catalina v10.15.7 on a MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2012).

Mar 2, 2024 2:14 PM in response to krysta1996_

It's a relief to know I'm not the only one. Have been going nuts the last 3 days trying all the prescribed fixes...nothing. I discovered it will work on Chrome, as someone else mentioned, but taking that extra step to use one app is not a long term solution.

Yep, I'm getting that colored line too whenever I try to open my profile or someone's story, profile, or hashtag search.

Mar 1, 2024 5:44 AM in response to krysta1996_

Same. Only JUST happened in the last few days. ONLY safari. No issue in Firefox. This has happened before with Safari, randomly dropped off for maybe a week and then came back online. I can see main wall page with menus down the side and suggested etc, inbox is fine, but my profile doesn't show.. nor do any stories load via my mac. Actually, via my iphone the last three days has been problematic with stories too. And quite glitchy in business page backend in the "followers" "who liked your posts" "verified" tabs too. I bet there's more changes ahead that's glitching everything yet AGAIN. Yay.

Mar 2, 2024 2:29 PM in response to krysta1996_

Sometime between Feb. 23 & Feb 28 something happened. I was able to use IG no problem 2/23 then I was away for 5 days and upon return it was not working. Older Mac PowerBook running Catalina 10.15.7 and Safari 15.6.1. Very strange that there aren't more people asking about this. Was on the chat with Apple support yesterday but got disconnected when I rebooted routers. Cleared history, cache, checked network but nothing resolved the issue. iPhone is fine and newer MacBook Air is fine. Very annoying but I suppose first world problem so there's that.

Mar 4, 2024 4:33 PM in response to krysta1996_

The exact same thing is happening to me. Started with not being able to see my page or anyone else’s, but could see scroll my feed. Now I can’t even do that. If I go to instagram using safari, it just loads a blank white page with a pink insta icon in the middle.

Mar 12, 2024 9:06 AM in response to youarenot

Wow, yours is not old at all! C'mon Apple, fix Safari!

Mar 2, 2024 10:58 AM in response to DAAkers

LITERALLY SAME!! In the past few days nothing loads. No stories no searches. So odd. Glad I found this. Maybe it’s a glitch and they’ll fix it soon.

Mar 3, 2024 8:29 PM in response to krysta1996_

I've had the same issue, as well, where all that I can see is the IG home page, but then NO other page or profile will open up. In addition, I'm not even able to forward a page (say, a recipe that I've seen) to anyone. Is there a fix or has IG even acknowledged this? It's been like this for a few days now. So frustrating.

WebKit in Safari 18 beta">News from WWDC24: WebKit in Safari 18 beta

Jun 10, 2024

by Jen Simmons, Jon Davis, Karl Dubost, Anne van Kesteren, Marcos Cáceres, Ada Rose Canon, Tim Nguyen, Sanjana Aithal, Pascoe, and Garrett Davidson

Web apps for Mac

Safari extensions, spatial media, web inspector, deprecations, bug fixes and more, help us beta test.

The last year has been a great one for WebKit. After unveiling Safari 17 beta at WWDC23, we’ve shipped six releases of Safari 17.x with a total of 200 new web technologies. And we’ve been hard at work on multiple architectural improvement projects that strengthen WebKit for the long-term.

Now, we are pleased to announce WebKit for Safari 18 beta. It adds another 48 web platform features, as well as 18 deprecations and 174 bug fixes. Test it today on iOS 18 beta, iPadOS 18 beta, visionOS 2 beta, and macOS Sequoia beta.

Safari 18 for visionOS 2 beta adds support for immersive WebXR . Now you can create fully immersive experiences and deliver them on the web to people using Apple Vision Pro . Safari on visionOS 2 beta supports immersive-vr sessions. WebXR scenes are displayed using hardware-accelerated graphics driven by WebGL .

A beautiful garden rendered in created graphics. There's a tree with bright red leaves. A blue sky full of puffy white clouds. Bright green grass, with a path leading by plants and garden sculpture. It's a world created in WebXR.

Safari for visionOS 2 beta supports the new WebXR transient-pointer input mode. It lets you make the most of natural input on visionOS, and allow your users to interact with a look and a pinch.

We are in a rendered 3d environment, in a garden. We look at a chess board, with a real human hand lifting a rendered chess piece to make the next move in the game. A floating panel has two buttons reading "Leave garden" and "Reset game".

If you want to animate a 3D model of the user’s hands, Safari for visionOS 2 beta also includes support for WebXR hand tracking . To ensure privacy, permission to allow hand tracking will be requested from users at the start of their WebXR session.

Learn all about WebXR on visionOS 2 beta by watching Build immersive web experiences with WebXR at WWDC24, available Wednesday June 12. And learn more about transient-pointer input mode by reading Introducing natural input for WebXR in Apple Vision Pro .

View Transitions

WebKit added support for the View Transitions API in Safari 18 beta. It provides an optimized browser API to animate elements from one state to another. Safari supports the CSS View Transitions Module Level 1 specification that adds new CSS properties and pseudo-elements for defining transition animations, along with a new browser API to start transition animations and react to different transition states. It works by capturing the current (old) state of the page and applying an animated transition to the new state. By default, the browser applies a cross-fade between the states.

Call the document.startViewTransition() method to initiate the capture. You can pass a callback function as the first argument to make DOM state changes between the old and new captures. The method returns a ViewTransition object which contains promises that can be used to track when the view transition starts or ends.

Once the states are captured, a pseudo-element tree is built which can be targeted with CSS, allowing you to modify the CSS animations used for the transitions. The animations out of the old page state and into the new page state can be modified via the ::view-transition-new(*) and ::view-transition-old(*) selectors. You can also ask the browser to independently track state changes for a specific element by naming it with the CSS view-transition-name property. You can then use the pseudo-element to customize animations for it.

The example below demonstrates state management with tabbed navigation. Each tab view has a custom transition animation out and a subtly different animation in, while the tabs themselves rely on the default page transition.

Style Queries

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for Style Queries when testing CSS Custom Properties. Similar to how developers can use Sass mixins, Style Queries can be used to define a set of reusable styles that get applied as a group.

Here, if the --background custom property is set to black, then certain styles will be applied — in this case to make the headline and paragraph text color white.

Don’t forget to pay attention the HTML structure. By default, Style Queries reference the styles on the direct parent element. You can create a different reference through the use of Container Query names.

currentcolor and system color keywords in Relative Color Syntax

Support for Relative Color Syntax shipped in Safari 16.4 . It lets you define colors in a more dynamic fashion, creating a new color from an existing color. The value lch(from var(--color) calc(L / 2) C H) for instance uses the lch color space to take the variable --color and calculate a new color that’s half its lightness, calc(L / 2) .

Now, starting in WebKit for Safari 18 beta, you can reference the currentcolor or a system color keyword as you define the new color. For example, this code will set the background color to be the same color as the text color, only 4 times lighter, as calculated in the oklch color space.

Being able to reference system color keywords opens up another world of options. System colors are like variables that represent the default colors established by the OS, browser, or user — defaults that change depending on whether the system is set to light mode, dark mode, high contrast mode, etc. For example, canvas represents the current default background color of the HTML page, while fieldtext matches the color of text inside form fields. Find the full list of system colors in CSS Color level 4 .

Relative Color Syntax lets you define dynamic connections between colors in your CSS, lessening the need to control color through variables in a tightly-regimented design system. Learn more about Relative Color Syntax by watching this portion of What’s new in CSS from WWDC23.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for transition animation of the display property.

Many developers are excited to use @starting-style along with transition-behavior and display: none interpolation. WebKit for Safari 17.4 added general support for transition-behavior , including transition-behavior: allow-discrete . WebKit for Safari 17.5 added support for @starting-style , letting you define starting values for transitioning an element as it’s created (or re-created). Now in WebKit for Safari 18 beta, you can use these features together to transition the display property.

Shaping interaction regions on visionOS

As a web developer, you’re very familiar with how link styling works on the web. For decades you’ve been able to use CSS to style text-decoration , color and more for :link , :hover , :active , and :visited states. You’ve also been able to adjust the size of the invisible tap target through use of padding.

Apple Vision Pro adds a new dimension to how links work — tap targets are visible on visionOS. Anytime a user looks at an interactive element, it’s highlighted to let them know that it can be tapped. And you as a designer or developer can intentionally design how an interaction region looks. You may want to add padding, for instance, or even a rounded corner to the otherwise invisible box.

Now in Safari in visionOS 2 beta, when you use CSS clip-path to change the shape of tappable area of a link, the visible interaction region will change shape as well. Interactive UI elements built with SVG will also be highlighted with the proper shape. Learn more by watching Optimize for the spatial web at WWDC24, available Tuesday June 11.

Backdrop Filter

Originally shipped in Safari 9.0, backdrop filter provides a way to apply graphics effects to the content behind a particular element. You can apply backdrop-filter to a headline, for example, and everything behind the headline will be blurred, or have decreased saturation, or increased contrast. Any of the filter functions from SVG can be used — blur() , brightness() , contrast() , drop-shadow() , grayscale() , hue-rotate() , invert() , opacity() , saturate() , and sepia() .

For many years, backdrop filter only worked in Safari. It was available when you prefixed the property with -webkit-backdrop-filter . Now, starting in Safari 18 beta, you don’t need the prefix. We also improved our implementation, fixing bugs and boosting interoperability.

This demo shows eight different filters and what you might do with each one alone. You can, of course, combine filters to create even more interesting results. With backdrop filter supported in Safari since 2015, Edge since 2018, Chrome since 2019, Samsung Internet since 2020, and Firefox since 2022, this is a great time to consider the kind of graphic design possibilities it enables.

safe in Flexbox

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the safe keyword for alignment in Flexbox. This provides a mechanism for refining how flex items overflow. Let’s look at an example of a simple navigation menu — a classic use of Flexbox.

The following CSS creates a simple layout that wraps when there’s not enough space on one line for the menu, while centering the items in the available space.

A simple menu of links, each represented by a word, laid out in two lines of centered text.

By default, justify-content: center will always keep the items centered, even when the content is overflowing the containing box. You might prefer, however, that the content not be centered when it overflows — being centered cuts off both the beginning and end of the word, making the content harder to understand when the overflow is not visible.

Diagram showing the difference between safe and default layout of the same menu, when the space for it is so narrow every word in on its own line, and some of the long words start to get chopped off.

The safe keyword lets you change how alignment works when content overflows. The justify-content: safe center rule will instead start align any item that is overflowing, while continuing to center the items that are not overflowing.

If you want to override the safe keyword, you can use unsafe . The justify-content: unsafe center rule will do the same thing as justify-content: center . The unsafe keyword has been supported in WebKit for Safari for quite some time.

Content visibility

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for content-visibility . This property controls whether or not an element renders its contents in a fashion that’s useful for making performance optimizations. It lets you communicate to the browser that certain portions of the page will likely be initially offscreen, and suggest they be omitted from layout and rendering. This can make the page load faster.

Last year , we added support for web apps in macOS Sonoma. You can add any website to your dock — whether or not it was built with a Manifest file, Service Worker, or other technology to customize the web app experience. Go to the site in Safari, then File > Add to Dock… where you can customize the icon, change the name, and even clean up the URL. Then, just click on the web app icon in your Dock, and it will open as an app.

This year brings two improvements to web apps on Mac.

Opening links

macOS Sequoia beta adds support for opening links directly in web apps. Now, when a user clicks a link, if it matches the scope of a web app that the user has added to their Dock, that link will open in the web app instead of their default web browser.

For example, imagine you have added MDN Web Docs to the Dock. Then a colleague sends you a link to an MDN page in Messages, Mail, Slack, Discord, IRC, or any non-browser application on your Mac. Now when you click on that link, it will open in the MDN Web Docs web app instead of your default browser.

Clicking a link within a browser will maintain the current behavior. This feature only affects links opened elsewhere. (When a user is in Safari, clicking on a link that matches the scope of a web app that is added to Dock, they will see an “Open in web app” banner, unless they have previously dismissed the banner.)

By default, this behavior applies when the link matches the host of the web page used to create the web app. As a developer, you can refine this experience by defining the range of URLs that should open in the web app with the scope member in the web app manifest .

Extension support

Now you can personalize web apps on Mac with Safari Web Extensions and Content Blockers. Navigate to the web app’s Settings menu to access all your installed Content Blockers and Web Extensions. Any enabled in Safari will be on by default in the web app. Each web app is uniquely customizable, just like Safari profiles.

Safari 18 beta also adds support for Mobile Device Management of extension enabled state, private browsing state, and website access on managed devices. This means schools and businesses that manage iOS, iPadOS, or macOS devices can now include the configuration of Safari App Extensions, Content Blockers, and Web Extensions in their management.

One of the amazing experiences you can have on Apple Vision Pro is looking at spatial photos and panoramas. When you open the Photos app in visionOS, you see a montage of your photos. Tap an image, it appears alone in a floating frame in front of you, while the rest of the app disappears.

A family blows out candles on a birthday cake in a photo — that's floating in a frame in midair, in a living room. This is a still from the WWDC23 Keynote that introduced Apple Vision Pro. It's an example of how spatial photos work.

A spatial photo appears at just the right height and viewing angle to make it feel like you’ve gone back to a moment in time. A second tap of the UI breaks it out of the frame, as it grows and becomes even more immersive. Similarly, a panorama floats in a frame on first tap. Then on second tap of the UI, it expands to wrap all around you, creating a fully immersive experience.

Now in Safari 18 for visionOS 2 beta, you can use the Fullscreen API to create the same experience on the web. You can embed the photo in a web page, and provide the ability to tap. The photo will pop into a floating frame as the Safari window disappears. Then when the user taps on the spatial photo or panorama UI that visionOS provides, the photo will further expand to create a fully immersive experience. When they exit the image, the Safari window will return.

Let’s walk through how to support experiencing a spatial photo or panorama on the web using Fullscreen API. First, include the image on your web page using any of the techniques we’ve used on the web for years. Here, we can embed a flattened panoramic photo into the web page using simple HTML.

Then using JavaScript, we’ll trigger .requestFullscreen() on tap. Perhaps like this.

You could, of course, create your own UI for the user to tap, rather than making the entire photo the tap target.

Spatial images work just the same, although it’s likely we want to provide fallbacks for browsers that do not support HEIC files . We can do so with the picture element.

Spatial images are stereoscopic, with both a left and right channel. In Safari, when the image is embedded in the web page, the browser will show the left channel. And there’s no need to worry about providing a fallback of any sort for Safari on macOS, iOS, or iPadOS — the stereoscopic HEIC file works great.

This technique will also cause images to go fullscreen in any browser that supports Fullscreen API. Learn more about adding panorama and spatial photos to your websites by watching Optimize for the spatial web at WWDC24, available Tuesday June 11.

Writing Suggestions

At last year’s WWDC, Apple unveiled inline predictive text on iOS, iPadOS, macOS and more. It helps users input text faster by predicting what they might be typing and finishing the word, phrase or even a whole sentence when the user taps the space bar. Now, WebKit for Safari 18 beta on iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma brings inline predictive text to the web.

While inline predictive text makes for a fantastic, personalized user experience, there might be specific situations on the web where it’s better to not have predictions. WebKit for Safari 18 beta on iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma gives web developers the opportunity to disable inline predictions through the writingsuggestions attribute. By default, writing suggestions is set to true. You can turn off the capability by including the writingsuggestions="false" attribute on any type of text input field.

WebKit for Safari on iOS 18 beta adds haptic feedback for <input type=checkbox switch> . This means, now when a user taps a switch control on iPhone, a single tap is felt — just like how toggling a switch feels in Settings app on iOS. Try this demo to see what it’s like.

Date and time inputs

WebKit for Safari 18 beta on macOS improves accessibility support for date and time input field types. Now <input type="date"> , <input type="datetime-local"> , and <input type="time"> elements work properly with VoiceOver.

Usually elements have the labels they need, but sometimes there is no text label for a particular button or UI. In this situation, ARIA can be used to provide an accessible label. The aria-label attribute provides names of labels while aria-roledescription provides the description for the role of an element.

On very rare occasions, you may need to override aria-label or aria-roledescription to provide different names or descriptions specifically for braille. The aria-braillelabel and aria-brailleroledescription attributes provide such an ability. They exist to solve very specific needs, including educational contexts where the site needs to render the specific braille table dot pattern. If you do use braille-related ARIA attributes, be sure to test them using a braille reader. If in doubt, relying on the accessible name from content or aria-label / aria-roledescription is almost always the better user experience . WebKit has supported these ARIA attributes for years.

Now, WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the ariaBrailleLabel and ariaBrailleRoleDescription element reflection properties. These make it possible to get and set the aria-braillelabel and aria-brailleroledescription ARIA attributes on DOM elements directly via JavaScript APIs, rather than by using setAttribute and getAttribute .

Watch video without distractions in Viewer for Safari 18 beta on macOS.

A video playing in a Safari window, where the video is enlarged to fill almost all of the space. The rest of the web page content is mostly hidden behind a dark translucent overlay.

When you play in Viewer, the video fills the Safari window, while providing full access to system playback controls. Then it automatically enters picture-in-picture anytime you switch tabs, close the window, or occlude the web page with another window. Look for Video Viewer in the new page menu in Safari whenever you are on a web page with a prominent video element.

Managed Media Source

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds Workers support for both Managed Media Source (MMS) and Media Source Extensions ( MSE ). This can be especially helpful on complex websites that want to ensure continuous and smooth video playback even when other site activity (such as live commenting) causes a very busy main thread. You can see the performance difference in this demo .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the WebRTC HEVC RFC 7789 RTP Payload Format. Previously, the WebRTC HEVC used generic packetization instead of RFC 7789 packetization. This payload format provides a new option for improving videoconferencing, video streaming, and delivering high-bitrate movies and TV shows.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for MediaStreamTrack processing in a dedicated worker. And it adds support for missing WebRTC stats.

Two years ago at WWDC22, we announced support for passkeys — a groundbreaking industry-standard way to login to websites and app services. Passkeys provide people with an extremely easy user experience, while delivering a profound increase in security. To learn more, watch Meet Passkeys or read Supporting passkeys .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for three new features as we continue to improve passkeys. First, Safari 18 beta adds support for using mediation=conditional for web authentication credential creation. This allows websites to automatically upgrade existing password-based accounts to use passkeys. Learn more by watching Streamline sign-in with passkey upgrades and credential managers at WWDC24, available on Tuesday, June 11.

Second, WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for using passkeys across related origins. This lets websites use the same passkey across a limited number of domains which share a credential backend.

And third, WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the WebAuthn prf extension. It allows for retrieving a symmetric key from a passkey to use for the encryption of user data.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for secure HTTPS for all images, video, and audio by upgrading passive subresource requests in mixed content settings. This means that if some files for a website are served using HTTPS and some are served using HTTP (known as “mixed content”), all images and media will now be auto-upgraded to HTTPS, in adherence with Mixed Content Level 2 .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for Unicode 15.1.0 characters in RegExp. Unicode 15.1 added 627 characters, bringing the total of characters to 149,813. Now, these new characters can be used in regular expressions.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta also adds support for the v flag with RegExp.prototype[Symbol.matchAll] . providing more powerful ways to match Unicode characters, as specified in the ECMAScript 2024 standard.

For example, you can now specify to only match on Latin characters, while avoiding matching on Cyrillic script characters.

Or split a string matching on Emojis.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for URL.parse() , a way to parse URLs which returns null rather than an exception when parsing fails.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta expands Declarative Shadow tree support by adding the shadowRootDelegatesFocus and shadowRootClonable IDL attributes to the <template> element. It also adds the shadowRootSerializable attribute and shadowRootSerializable IDL attribute to the <template> element, enabling those using Declarative Shadow roots to opt into making them serializable. Serializing can be done through the new getHTML() method that has been added at the same time.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for PopStateEvent ’s hasUAVisualTransition , indicating whether the user agent has a visual transition in place for the fragment navigation.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for subresource integrity in imported module scripts, which gives cryptographic assurances about the integrity of contents of externally-hosted module scripts.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the bytes() method to the Request, Response , Blob , and PushMessageData objects. This replaces the need for web developers to call arrayBuffer() , which can be difficult to use, and wraps the result in a Uint8Array . Calling bytes() is now the recommended way going forward when you need to access the underlying bytes of the data these objects represent.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for feature detecting text fragments by exposing document.fragmentDirective . Note that the returned object (a FragmentDirective ) doesn’t provide any functionality, but it’s helpful if you need to know if Fragment Directives are supported by the browser.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for the willReadFrequently context attribute for the getContext() method. It indicates whether or not a lot of read-back operations are planned. It forces the use of a software accelerated 2D or offscreen canvas, instead of hardware accelerated. This can improve performance when calling getImageData() frequently.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta extends 2D canvas support for currentcolor . It can now be used inside color-mix() or Relative Color Syntax. Here currentcolor will default to the computed color property value on the canvas element.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for six new WebGL extensions:

  • EXT_texture_mirror_clamp_to_edge
  • WEBGL_render_shared_exponent
  • WEBGL_stencil_texturing
  • EXT_render_snorm
  • OES_sample_variables
  • OES_shader_multisample_interpolation

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for fuzzy search code completion in the Web Inspector’s CSS source editor.

WebKit for iOS 18 beta, iPadOS 18 beta, visionOS 2 beta, and macOS Sequoia beta adds support for two new API — the Writing Tools API and an API to control adaptive image glyph insertion. Learn more about these API by watching Get started with Writing Tools and Bring expression to your app with Genmoji at WWDC24, both available Tuesday June 11.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta adds support for Apple Pay funds transfer.

While it’s rare to deprecate older technology from the web, there are occasions when it makes sense. We’ve been busy removing -webkit prefixed properties that were never standardized, aging media formats that were never supported in other browsers, and more. This helps align browser engines, improve interoperability, and prevent compatibility problems by reducing the possibility that a website depends on something that’s not a web standard.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for OffscreenCanvasRenderingContext2D ’s commit() method.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta deprecates support for a number of rarely used -webkit prefixed CSS pseudo-classes and properties — and even one -khtml prefixed property.

  • -webkit-alt and alt properties
  • :-webkit-animating-full-screen-transition pseudo-class
  • :-webkit-full-screen-ancestor pseudo-class
  • :-webkit-full-screen-controls-hidden pseudo-class
  • :-webkit-full-page-media pseudo-class
  • :-webkit-full-screen-document pseudo-class
  • :-khtml-drag pseudo-class

WebKit for Safari 18 beta also deprecates support for the resize: auto rule. Support for the resize property remains, just as it’s been since Safari 4. The values Safari continues to support include : none , both , horizontal , vertical , block , inline , plus the global values. Early versions of CSS Basic User Interface Module Level 3 defined auto , but it was later written out of the web standard.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta also deprecates support for non-standardize WEBKIT_KEYFRAMES_RULE and WEBKIT_KEYFRAME_RULE API in CSSRule .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for the JPEG2000 image format. Safari was the only browser to ever provide support.

If you’ve been serving JPEG2000 files using best practices, then your site is using the picture element to offer multiple file format options to every browser. Safari 18 beta will simply no longer choose JPEG2000, and instead use a file compressed in JPEG XL, AVIF, WebP, HEIC, JPG/JPEG, PNG, or Gif — choosing the file that’s best for each user. Only one image will be downloaded when you use <picture> , and the browser does all the heavy lifting.

We have noticed that some Content Deliver Networks (CDN) use User Agent sniffing to provide one file to each UA, offering only JPEG2000 images to Safari — especially on iPhone and iPad. If you expect this might be happening with your site, we recommend testing in Safari 18 beta on both macOS Sequoia and iOS or iPadOS 18. If you see problems, contact your SaaS provider or change your image delivery settings to ensure your website provides fallback images using industry best practices.

If you notice a broken site, please file an issue at webcompat.com .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for non-standard VTTRegion.prototype.track .

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes the last bits of support for AppCache.

When AppCache first appeared in 2009, in Safari 4, it held a lot of promise as a tool for caching web pages for use offline. It was imagined as “HTML5 Application Cache” back when HTML itself was being further expanded to handle more use cases for web applications. A developer could create a simple cache manifest file with a list of files to be cached. Its simplicity looked elegant, but there was no mechanism for cache busting, and that made both developing a site and evolving the site over time quite frustrating. AppCache also had security challenges. So new web standards were created to replace it. Today, developers use Service Workers and Cache Storage instead.

WebKit deprecated AppCache with a warning to the Console in Safari 11.0. Then in 2021, we removed support for AppCache from Safari 15.0, with a few exceptions for third-party users of WKWebView . Now we are removing those exceptions. This change to WebKit will only affect the rare web content loaded in older third-party apps that have JavaScript code which relies on the existence of AppCache related interfaces.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes the SVGAnimateColorElement interface.

WebKit for Safari 18 beta removes support for four non-standard Web APIs:

  • KeyboardEvent.altGraphKey
  • AES-CFB support from WebCrypto
  • KeyboardEvent.prototype.keyLocation
  • HashChangeEvent ’s non-standard initHashChangeEvent() method

In addition to all the new features, WebKit for Safari 18 beta includes work to polish existing features.

If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac

If Safari doesn't load a webpage, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or otherwise doesn't work as expected, these solutions might help.

These solutions are for issues that can affect Safari on Mac, including issues such as these:

A webpage is blank, doesn't load all of its content, or otherwise doesn't work as expected.

You can't sign in to a webpage, despite using the correct sign-in information.

A webpage asks you to remove or reset cookies.

Safari slows down, stops responding, or quits unexpectedly.

If you're using an iPhone or iPad, learn about solutions for Safari on iPhone and iPad .

Reload the page

From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload Page. Or press Command-R.

If Safari doesn't reload the page, quit Safari, then try again. If Safari doesn't quit, you can press Option-Command-Esc to force Safari to quit .

If Safari automatically reopens unwanted pages, quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. Learn how to control which windows Safari automatically reopens .

Install software updates and restart

Update macOS , which can include updates for Safari. If your Mac didn't restart automatically, choose Apple menu  > Restart. Some important background updates take effect only after restarting.

Check Safari extensions

If you installed any Safari extensions, turn extensions off. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Click Extensions, then deselect each extension to turn it off. Learn more about Safari extensions .

If you find that an extension is causing the issue, make sure that the extension is up to date.

Test with a private window

A website can store cookies, caches, and other data on your Mac, and issues with that data can affect your use of the website. To prevent the website from using that data, view it in a private window: From the menu bar in Safari, choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift-Command-N.

If that works, use the following steps to remove the website's data, including its caches and cookies. The website can then create new data as needed. If it's a website that you sign in to, make sure that you know your sign-in information before continuing.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Privacy.

Click Manage Website Data.

Select the affected website from the list shown.

Click Remove.

Click Done.

Open the website again in a non-private browser window.

Check Safari settings

The webpage might not be compatible with one or more browser settings, which you can turn on or off as needed. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Then click Websites, Privacy, or Security to access these settings:

Privacy settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you allow cross-site tracking, show your IP address, or allow cookies.

Security settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you enable JavaScript.

Websites settings . These settings can be configured for specific websites. For example, a website might require that you allow pop-up windows, allow downloads, allow access to your camera or microphone, or turn off content blockers.

Check iCloud Private Relay

If you subscribe to iCloud+ and are using its Private Relay feature, try reloading the page without Private Relay: From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. This menu item appears only when Private Relay is turned on for your network. Learn more about iCloud Private Relay .

Check VPN or other security software

If you installed VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with your network connections, that software could affect your use of the website or the internet. Learn about network issues related to VPN and other software .

Check network settings

Certain network settings, such as custom proxy settings or custom DNS settings , can affect access to content on the internet. Even if you haven't changed these or other network settings yourself, you might have installed software that changed them for you.

To find out whether the issue is with the network settings on your Mac, try viewing the page from a different web browser or different device on the same network. Or reset your network settings by setting up a new network location on your Mac.

If the issue affects other devices and web browsers on the same network, the issue is probably with the website, and you should contact the website developer for help.

If the issue continues to affect only a particular webpage, contact the website developer for help.

Please read our suggestions… small feature! Plz

It would make a WORLD of difference for someone like me who has hundreds of tabs & windows open (IPad & laptop) at any given time…... a small timeline view/hint when you’re scrolling through all open tabs in that window - like when the tab was first opened/created or modified last , or something similar. Another addition - To Name/title any open Chrome window. Not only folders of open tabs like Safari allows (bc that syncs to any open window) or bookmarks folders. But the windows themselves. I like to have multiple windows open at a time so this would be a small help when sorting through all my shhhtuff. Hope y’all read this soon, otherwise great work!

App getting worse and not listening to the community

I honestly switched to this from safari cause the middle search bar button allowed you to type on the search bar a lot easier. Now it's a new tab button, the community has expressed time and time again about how stupid this is and it has made reaching the search bar at the top hard especially on bigger phones. Despite the fanfare, the team working on this app has never done anything to solve this issue and my experience with this app has been going down ever since. As of now I'll stop using this app and new features that they push out for this app has negligible gain while they don't solve the issues that users feedback. I don't want to use a product where the team doesn't listen to their community and do what they want to do instead of what consumers want. I have feedback this issue time and time again on their support page to no constructive response so it's finally time I switch to other browsers like Firefox with the search bar at the bottom.

They removed the ability to log in iPad & sync across devices

In classic Google fashion, they inexplicably made a horrible decision and removed the Settings menu option from the browser entirely, leaving no way to log in and sync passwords, bookmarks, etc across devices. This is one of the key features that has kept me using Chrome and it’s gone now. I would recommend using a different browser entirely because you might Chrome will keep working in the way it has been and then their insanely tone-deaf UX team will remove a key feature that you depend on, without even updating the documentation. If you check the support page for the iOS version, it still says the Settings menu option is there. It even highlights this feature in the app description above here in the App Store! This is extremely misleading. Now I have to embark on migrating all of my bookmarks and other information over to a different browser because Chrome is an unreliable waste of time.

Is it safer to use an app or a website on your phone?

And steps you can take to be safer and more private online.

safari browser not working on iphone

A Tech Friend reader asked that deceptively tricky question.

While experts I spoke to weren’t unanimous on whether websites or apps are the better choice for your security and privacy, most of them picked the web — with caveats.

That shouldn’t discourage you from using apps. But if you’re doing something on your phone only occasionally — buying from an unfamiliar shopping site or browsing for home insurance — it’s probably smarter and safer to use the company’s website rather than its app.

Why websites generally beat apps

The mobile app stores from Apple and Google inspect apps for safety. Their vetting is good but not foolproof .

Too broke to join a wedding party? You can say no.

Once you’ve downloaded an app, though, app makers have latitude to collect information that websites generally cannot easily obtain, including your approximate location, your battery level and what other devices, like an Xbox, are connected to your WiFi. Apps might pass on the information to advertising companies and data brokers .

Apple and Google require apps to ask your permission for some location collection and information sharing. (In 2021, my colleagues investigated iPhone apps that found ways to track you even if you said no.)

Well-designed apps generally do a great job protecting your security and privacy, but you can’t always tell the good apps from the ick ones.

Compared with apps, websites “cannot spy or track you as easily nor access confidential information without permission,” said Chester Wisniewski, a digital security specialist with Sophos.

Shira Ovide

He also said the top web browsers — including Google’s Chrome, Apple’s Safari, Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft’s Edge — have “some of the best security engineers in the world.” Their security measures apply to any website you visit. Each app might be responsible for its own security updates.

Websites definitely aren’t perfect. They have security flaws and tricky ways to follow your activity. You can also be fooled by websites pretending to be your bank or favorite retailer.

An experienced web browser technologist said browsers are “paranoid by default.” Compared with phone apps, he said, browsers give you more options to dial up privacy, including by blocking targeted advertisements. Outsiders can also verify websites’ security and information-sharing activities in ways apps don’t permit.

(This person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he didn’t have permission to talk to a journalist.)

Nicholas Weaver, a researcher at the University of California at Berkeley’s International Computer Science Institute, said “it depends” on whether a website or app is safer.

If you’re using Firefox or Safari, he said, a website is probably better than an app because those browsers automatically block many technologies used to build dossiers of your interests and activities. Weaver said a website is probably worse if you’re using Chrome because Google’s browser generally allows those tracking technologies.

Google said people have options in Chrome’s settings to turn off a common tracker technology called cookies . The company said Chrome is also experimenting with phasing out many cookies .

Frédéric Rivain, chief technology officer for the password manager company Dashlane, went against the crowd and said mobile apps are generally safer than websites.

He said it’s easier to create an impostor website than an impostor app, and that Apple and Google put solid restrictions on app coding while websites have less supervision.

What should you do with this information?

Particularly for services you don’t use often, consider whether you need to download an app to your phone or if you can use the website instead. Also consider deleting apps you don’t use regularly.

Those of you with Android phones are probably using Chrome. If you’re concerned about what Weaver said, follow these instructions to change your phone’s standard browser to Firefox or something else.

For iPhones, you can go to the Settings app, pick Privacy & Security and then App Privacy Report . That will give you a week’s worth of analysis of how often apps collect your location, phone contacts or other information.

The safety question also spotlights the downsides of smartphone apps, including giving Big Tech control over what you do on your phone and potentially increasing costs for subscriptions . That’s why I want us to be open to the promise of potential alternatives to 15 years of the smartphone app status quo .

Also, let me know if you were the reader whose question sparked this exploration of apps vs. websites. I can’t find your email!
