Sacred Journey to Peru

Our next sacred tour will be in 2024

Upcoming Events

The q’ero indians 5 elements trail & more, holistic jungle retreat: manu national park, visit the valley of cacao: illapani waterfall.

W e have begun a very deep and profound awakening – awakening to true life and what truly is available to us on this beautiful earth. In this time of great change there is much upheaval – many confusions, doubts, and illusions – that are being broken down, refined, so we can ‘see’ the truth, feel it, experience it, hear it, and live it. The walls of illusion are dissolving with light and beauty. If you are ready to live your truth, if you are ready to see with new eyes, then come join us on the next journey in Peru. The time to live out your destiny is now on this earth, to live from your power center, your life force…

I offer these tours and retreats in Peru as a place to feel, experience, express, in whatever shape of form that takes, to get where you need to be, to heal, to laugh, to cry or simply sit in the simplicity and beauty of silence. These sacred tours and journeys are a time to find you, a place of freedom, of truth, in a supportive, loving and caring environment, to be all that you are and want to become. We will all be there to learn, to grow, and allow ourselves just to ‘be’. Bringing healing and balance to transform the world is what we know is needed. Bringing balance starts with ourselves, when we become balanced and in tune with our heart’s desires and we’re living in the flow of life we become beacons of light – for others to ‘see’, to ‘feel’, and to be inspired by.. We heal the world when the world within us is healed.

shaman tour peru

Take this time to rest, integrate, love, rejuvenate, and become all that you are. In the company of your sisters and brothers, in your own individual way you will get where you need to be. There is no set criterion for these tours, come with an open heart and find the way within. Join me on the next journey in Peru for an initiation of the Feminine.. or sign up for the next Manu Jungle retreat.. dream your world into being and awaken your Divine Feminine / Masculine power.. it’s what the world is waiting for….

Please email me to know more about the up coming Sacred Tour to discuss your suitability for this Transformational Opportunity in September 2023: [email protected]

A select group of travelers will explore, heal, journey and transform together – there are very few spaces available. To join us in September and to secure your place contact me at: [email protected]

“When I signed up for the Shamanka tour, I instinctively felt the trip would be the start of important changes in my life – a new chapter so to say. The ‘energies’ in the many and beautiful sacred places we visited, the profound work with Andean Priests (and our tour guides) along with the everyday magic of the Peruvian people and their lifestyle, helped my world change. I visited amazing places, made friendships, learnt new healing techniques and had personal healings and revelations, all of which made the person returning from Peru very different to the one who left.”

shaman tour peru

I attended a five-day retreat at Etnikas in the summer and it was worth both the journey and the wait (wait due to covid restrictions). They have a great new premises which is secluded and peaceful. The management of the entire operation seamlessly transcends the different levels of formality and care as and when required; whilst being a generally self sufficient person, there were of course moments of fragility throughout the experience and the team were on hand every step of the way to make sure support was given.

Infinite Love ❤️

Etnikas Ayahuasca Retreats exceeded my expectations in every way. The place location is breathtaking, the level of care is superb, and the Spiritual holiness is in the air.

Thank you Etnikas, I am forever grateful ️ Till we meet again

THE MIRROR EFFECT TO CREATE PEACE

Peacefulness.

Through many years of experience, we have discovered that the most suitable accommodation for an experiential mystical journey is a Retreat Center. The Retreat Centers we work with are very private and safe. They are nestled around magnificent landscapes that reflect back mysticism and quietness. Greatly expanded areas for retreating, walking, meditating or just process and integrate the ceremonies received. Accommodations are usually double occupancy, but single occupancy is also available. Our centers are owned by well-respected shamans. They have been designed and built with the intention to provide a safe haven for individuals interested in expanding and advancing spiritually. Relax, Reconnect and find Inner Peace.

Perú Sacred Tours designs, organize and coordinates all the activities for a group, couples or a person interested in working with the Herbalists Shamans of the Rainforest, the Q’ero Inca Priests of Cuzco and/or the Moche San Pedro Shamans of Chiclayo.

Peru Ayahuasca Retreat Reviews

Absolutley LOVED my time spent at Kapitari. Don Lucho and his family were extremely hospitable I only wish i spoke more spanish so i could of expressed my gratitude fully. The place is amazing and was the perfect back drop for my first experiences with Ayahuasca and would definitely recommend this retreat to anyone. Kapitari and the souls that I met there will forever be etched in my heart!

“When Aya calls, Kapitari is where I go to marinate in pure love. It’s where Nature finds my shoes as abhorrent as I do, and quickly, creatively, reclaims them—turning them into a termite mound overnight, or conspiring with mud puddles to gobble them off my feet. There is no need of shoes at Kapitari. There is no need of anything. There are no “trappings”…simply wee thatched huts for sleeping in, nurturing mud/fruit baths, giggles with the locals, reinvigorating swims, parrot greetings, cosmic night skies, global kindred spirits, simple nutritious meals, and the breathing, stirring aliveness of Mother Jungle. It will move you. Don Lucho and his family are open, kind and loving healers. For those who come seeking answers, healing, or to do the hard-hard-gritty-hard soul work, Don Lucho will safely and beautifully move you through each healing and journeying ceremony. His relationship with our many plant allies and teachers is exquisite.”

What Makes Kapitari a Magical Experience?

We’re a Peruvian & Family Owned Center

Did you know that many Peruvian Ayahuasca centers are actually owned by Westerners? We’re not saying that’s always a bad thing, but there are a few making big profits from this ‘business’ and not always giving anything back.

But hey, let’s introduce you to a different kind of place – Kapitari!

Kapitari is different because it’s owned by the shaman Don Lucho and his family. It’s not just a money making business for them; they genuinely care about their community and fellow Peruvians. 🌿✨

So, if you’re looking for a meaningful adventure that gives back, consider Kapitari where healing and community come together, and let the magic of Ayahuasca unfold in a down-to-earth and heartwarming setting. 🍃🌟

Amazing Shamans

Meet Don Lucho, the wise owner and main shaman at Kapitari! His ancestors trace from the Cocama tribe near Iquitos, Peru, and his incredible connection with Mother Nature began at a very young age. At just 12 years old, he delved into the mystical world of Amazon jungle plants and spirits. Instead of relying on second-hand knowledge, he chose the path of his ancestors, learning from nature itself.

With well over 50 years of experience in ancestral medicine and Ayahuasca ceremonies, Don Lucho is a true maestro. Beyond healing, he passionately safeguards Mother Nature and has an awe-inspiring permaculture project admired by global environmentalists.

As Peru’s Brand Ambassador, he represented shamans on a captivating journey across Europe. His knowledge of plant medicine and sustainable agricultural methods earned him admiration from experts and scientists worldwide. Don Lucho is not just a shaman; he’s an earth-loving visionary with an incredible gift for healing and nurturing nature. 🌿✨

Our accommodations are traditional jungle tambos made from natural jungle materials but protected by mosquito netting.

We like to think of our tambos as wildly charming hideaways in the heart of the untamed jungle. These delightful havens offer an adventurous escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, where nature’s embrace becomes your cozy companion.

Embracing the jungle’s wild beauty, tambos provide a perfect blend of simplicity and serenity, where you can immerse yourself in the lush greenery and dance to the rhythmic symphony of exotic wildlife.

Get ready to trade Wi-Fi for fireflies and city lights for starry nights! 🌿🏕️✨

Testimonials

When you are called to Ayahuasca it is so important to choose the right setting in which to truly experience this other Worldly spiritual adventure. I couldn't imagine doing this anywhere other than Kapitari. Unlike most other white linen and white smile retreats, Kapitari is a place for real people, run by real people and in the most idyllic setting, all for a very fair and affordable price.

Kapitari is a wonderful retreat center. The facilitators are genuine, the location is beautiful, and the staff truly make you feel like family. Most importantly Don Lucho and his son Wagner, the shamans, were amazing! So in touch with the medicine and great at guiding you through the ayahuasca experience.

Amazing, wonderful, and enchanting! I departed on my journey to Kapitari in the jungle with an open heart and mind and both were filled with beautiful people, ideas, and messages. My experience at Kapitari was awe-inspring and I believe it was the people and spirit of Kapitari that made it so.

After breakfast, flight to Cuzco. Arrival to Cuzco, reception and transfer to your hotel, the 5 star deluxe Monasterio Hotel. Free morning. In the afternoon, a guided visit of the four ruins nearby, Sacsayhuaman, Kenko, Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay, with our Shaman and guide who will explain the spiritual significance of each site and will perform a ritual and cleansing and offer personalised spiritual guidance for each participant. Return to your hotel.

Monasterio Hotel   |   Meals: B

After breakfast, a trip to the Sacred Valley with our Shaman and guide. The trip will include a visit to Pisaq. The village of Pisac was founded during Colonial times. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays the Indians barter their products, and artisans from all over the area sell their woven alpaca wool blankets and ponchos, engraved gourds, antique reproductions and jewellery. On Sundays, it is also the meeting place for the local Mayors of the region, who come dressed in their traditional costumes, to attend morning mass. After the market, a visit to the ruins above Pisaq where our Shaman will perform a plant ceremony for all participants. Medicine, personalised attention during the ceremony, cleansing and explanation of the site will be offered. Lunch box provided. Return to your hotel in Cuzco in the afternoon.

Meals: B & Box L

Transfer to the railway station in Poroy for the Luxury Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu. Arrival and transfer to your hotel, the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. After check-in, a guided visit of the most spectacular ancient city in the world. This fabulous city contains houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square; and all connected by narrow roads and steps that are surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, free time to enjoy this spiritual wonder. Opportunity for a guided trek (approx 1 hour) up to the sungate (Intipunku), which is a part of the Inca Trail, for a magical view of the sanctuary or alternatively an unguided climb to the top of Wayna Picchu, with a magnificent view of the whole Sanctuary (recommended for fit individuals only). Lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge. Return to the site for free exploration before returning to your hotel for dinner and accommodation.

Meals: B, L & D

After breakfast, you will meet with your Shaman who will conduct a very different tour of the site and will explain the mystical aspects of Machu Picchu. Return to your hotel for lunch. Afternoon tea before returning in the evening by Hiram Bingham train to Poroy. Enjoy dinner and cocktails aboard the train. Arrival and transfer to your hotel located in the Sacred Valley, the Rio Sagrado.

Rio Sagrado Hotel   |   Meals: B, L & D

Today a private trek to the ruins of Huchuy Qosqo. Transfer to Piuray Lake from where you will start this 9 hour trek. You will be rewarded with the beautiful morning sunshine on Mount Veronica and the entire Vilcabamba Range. After a brief uphill start you will begin to descend over the altiplano, to the ruins of Huchuy Qosqo. These well-preserved ruins are characterized by double jamb doorways, three-storey houses and mixed constructions of stone and adobe. Sprawling over the mountain top and surrounded by spectacular views of the Sacred Valley and Urubamba mountain range, this is a less popular trek and requires good physical strength. After enjoying a delicious picnic lunch under the shade of the Queñua trees (Andean Oak), you will continue hiking across open country before zigzagging down a steep trail on the face of the mountain. Transportation will be waiting in the village of Lamay to take you back to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Meals: B & L

After breakfast, return to Cuzco and accommodation at 5* Monasterio Hotel. Free day at leisure.

After breakfast, transfer to the archaeological site of Tipon with our Shaman who will explain the spiritual significance and will perform a ritual and cleansing of the spirit. Return to Cuzco and accommodation at the Monasterio Hotel.

A visit to the Moray Inca terraces located close to the Urubamba valley. These four fabulous terraces resembling an amphitheatre are incredible examples of early agricultural experimentation. As each level of terrace exhibits a marked temperature variation, several different microclimates are formed allowing for the growth of a wide variety of crops. Many types of cereals and products were grown here including corn and potato. The tour continues to the bizarre landscape of Maras, site of over 3000 separate salt pans. Of pre-Inca origin, these salt pans form from an underground source. Return to Cuzco and accommodation at Monasterio Hotel.

Free day in Cuzco. Accommodation at Monasterio 5* Hotel.

After breakfast transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

Peru Retreat 30 July-20 August 2023

shaman tour peru

..A spiritual journey..

Spiritual journey means that you discover why you came to this planet, what is your mission in this life, what you are doing wrong, why you got sick and what you can do, etc. When the shaman is a professional, he can help you change your destiny, remove life’s blockages, remove negative programs.

Participating in a retreat produces a 180-degree change in the person, especially at the inner level after participating in the magical ceremonies of the shamans. It’s like a restart that someone who has reached a deadlock needs.

Enjoy a Retreat Experience

Special spiritual Retreat:

From 30 July 2023 to 20 August 2023

Location: Peru,

A special Shipibo master Shaman: Master Asencia

´´I met master shaman Asencia in 2014 when I needed the help of a shaman and I turned to a person who knew real shamans from the Amazon jungle. A few days later, at a distance of thousands of kilometers I felt how this person worked on me building an energetic protection, something I needed at that time. Because I saw with my own eyes and felt with my body the shaman’s work, I gained great interest in this field, but above all I was interested in getting to know Asencia personally. There are certainly other real shamans, and others are reincarnated all the time, master Asencia remains for me the master permanently kept in my soul, always thanking heaven for their existence, of these people who keep the link between our world and mother nature. With a vast life experience in shamanic ceremonies, Asencia is actually an extension of a spiritual being that exists beyond this world.

I continue to keep in touch with master Asencia and her family and I learned many important things from her.

Master Asencia’s husband returned to the world of spirits a few years ago, she continued to work with her helpers and sons to whom she shared the secrets of her work.´´

*Before any registration, please read the entire text below to inform you about what shamanism is, about the conditions for participation in retreats or ceremonies. Click here..

*Peru foto and video gallery… * The importance of Icaros…

Discover who you are

Ceremonies in a retreat, guided by a shaman whose spirit has a high frequency, become very effective, because on high frequencies (of light) they can help and work effectively the beings of nature and those of the higher spiritual worlds that are behind the creation of our world .

Participating in this type of retreat in Peru, with master Asencia, is necessary when you want to change something in your life, or have an important decision to make, or when inexplicable blockages are manifested, or when you have been a victim of black magic, or when you have to elucidate situations in your life that you have not succeeded in using other methods.

During a retreat, living conditions and food are precarious, so participants must know that they must adapt to jungle conditions. Also, during the retreat from Peru with master Asencia, the diet will be very simple and sometimes severe depending on how the shaman considers it necessary. A simple diet and little food helps the body to cleanse itself of toxins when the cleansing process takes place (Purge) with the help of plants.

The retreat and ceremonies in Peru guided by master Asencia will be special and the participants will benefit from the life experience of this wonderful maestro, a noble and ancient soul of light in the universe.

The group will be picked up from the airport by the people who work for maestra Asencia and they will be transported on the Amazon to the jungle where the Wasan Yaka health center is.

Accommodation will take place in rooms with 5 beds each (5 people in a room). The food will be vegetarian, but white meat (fish or chicken) is also allowed if there is someone who cannot give it up. Water and fruit will be available all the time. For washing and toilet there are conditions in the garden, in typical rural conditions.

The center is guarded during the ceremonies and there are no problems with insects inside, everything is already arranged.

The retreat of the Shipibo tribe in Peru does not receive more than 10 people, and during the retreat you can visit the nearby surroundings, including the area with dolphins and the jungle. Every second day there is a ceremony after which the group sits and discusses what they experienced.

The rest of the details regarding the trip and the daily schedule will be communicated to the participants after registration.

The average annual temperature is 25 degrees, even if it rains the temperature remains warm and pleasant. During the retreat, Spanish and English are officially spoken. We have translators with us.

Participation costs and conditions

Cost 150$/Day/Person

See the ´´terms and conditions´´ section..

On July30, he will leave by plane from Europa to Lima. In Lima we all meet and take a small plane to Pucallpa. On July 31, 2023 very early in the morning the group meets at the Pucallpa airport and we meet the guide who will take us to the means of transport and start the journey to the health center, which will take another 6-7 hours. In order not to have an extremely long journey, it is recommended to arrive from Lima to Pucallpa at least one night before and stay at a hotel/motel.

In this type of plane (to Pacallpa), only hand luggage is allowed, so it is preferable that you only have a backpack with simple clothes for the jungle.

On the August: 2th, 4th, 6th, 8th (every second day) we have ceremonies and in the following days we discuss the experience we had, we can visit the surroundings, the jungle and the place where the dolphins come, and we will have workshops with themes explaining where we come from, about our families cosmic, about karma and the reason for reincarnation, about what energy vampires are, about the role of life on Earth and why this planet was created.

On the return on the 10/20 August in the morning, the group leaves the jungle for the airport crossing the Amazon, accompanied by the employees of the Wasan Yaka health center. So don’t buy a return ticket with a departure earlier than 8pm. The people in the group who are staying a few more days in Lima, and want to visit other destinations in Peru, can communicate this before the trip.

Detailed details about the program will be given to registered participants.

Prices include airport pick-up, round-trip Amazon transportation to the jungle, food during the retreat, accommodation and ceremony services, security services, help with the integration experience during the retreat.

* The price does not include transport to and from Peru, medical or travel insurance for each participant and he personally insures them as he wishes.

Embark on a Soulful Expedition: The Ultimate Guide to Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

Introduction to an Ayahuasca retreat in Peru

Peru has become a popular destination for seekers of ayahuasca experiences, offering an opportunity to explore the depths of consciousness. An ayahuasca retreat in Peru gives an opening to probe the innermost depths of one’s being and explore unknown planes of awareness that could lead to a meaningful transformation.

From preparation before attending an ayahuasca healing center to understanding the role shamans play during the ayahuasca retreats and ceremonies, this article will guide you through all aspects of planning to attend an ayahuasca shamanic healing center so that you can make sure it’s as safe and successful as possible.

What is Ayahuasca?

The ayahuasca vine is a powerful traditional plant medicine native to the Amazon rainforest. For centuries, indigenous populations have used the ayahuasca plant for spiritual and medicinal rituals; this practice is still in use today, with traditional ayahuasca ceremonies dedicated to preparing ancient medicinal plants for the consumption of people in need of deep healing.

The Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Psychotria viridis shrub are combined to form ayahuasca, a powerful traditional plant medicine. When consumed, ayahuasca induces intense visual and auditory hallucinations, emotional insight, physical purging (vomiting or diarrhea), altered states of consciousness, and profound spiritual experiences.

Peru and Ayahuasca

Peru has seen a surge in the popularity of ayahuasca retreats over the last decade as individuals look to these potent plant medicines for personal transformation and healing.

These retreats typically involve spending several days or weeks at an ayahuasca center, where participants participate in multiple ayahuasca ceremonies with experienced shamans guiding them through their experience.

During this time, they also participate in other activities such as yoga classes, meditation sessions, and workshops on shamanic practices like energy work or lucid dreaming techniques that help prepare them for their journey with ayahuasca.

What is it like to be in a retreat?

At an ayahuasca retreat in Peru, you can expect to be immersed in a supportive environment surrounded by like-minded individuals, all seeking transformation through this ancient healing practice with the sacred plants themselves. The atmosphere is usually one of openness and acceptance, where everyone feels safe enough to share their stories without judgment or criticism from others.

You will likely be staying at a comfortable facility that provides meals throughout your stay, so you don’t have to worry about preparing food yourself during your ceremony days when it is important not to eat anything heavy before drinking the sacred medicine.

Additionally, while enjoying your stay, you will have plenty of opportunities to explore nature walks, nearby riverside hikes, cultural excursions, visits to local villages, music events, etc..

Safety First

Ayahuasca, a potent and ancient medicinal remedy used by various cultures globally, is accessible to experience in Peru’s secure atmosphere. Attending an ayahuasca retreat in Peru can be life-changing, so let’s explore why it may be beneficial.

Grow and Heal

Ayahuasca retreats in Peru offer a unique opportunity for personal and spiritual growth and healing, with experienced shamans guiding participants through powerful ceremonies while allowing them to explore the local culture. By immersing themselves in this supportive environment, individuals can gain profound spiritual insight and transformative experiences as they journey toward self-discovery.

Embark on a Soulful Expedition: The Ultimate Guide to Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

Why attend an ayahuasca retreat in Peru

An ayahuasca retreat in Peru offers just that. The Ayahuasca experience, a time-honored custom of Amazon Basin natives, has been gaining traction with globetrotters looking to expand their horizons and undergo a profound alteration.

Attending one of the many ayahuasca retreats in Peru provides access to traditional healing practices, cultural immersion, and learning some of Peruvian Shamanism’s extensive shamanic healing knowledge while connecting with nature in a safe, legal environment.

Who guides the ceremonies?

When attending an ayahuasca retreat in Peru, you’ll gain access to traditional healing practices from the curanderos, indigenous healers, or local village shamans who have been using the ayahuasca vine and other medicinal plants for centuries.

Before participating in one of the many ayahuasca ceremonies, you can prepare yourself mentally by learning about the spiritual aspects of taking ayahuasca. You can also take part in long hikes through the Amazon rainforest, exposing you to various plant medicines integral to traditional ceremonies.

In addition to gaining knowledge about ancient traditions related to ayahuasca use, attending one of the many amazing ayahuasca retreats allows for deep personal exploration and transformation while immersed in a beautiful natural setting.

The remote location of many Peruvian centers provides peace and serenity away from everyday stressors allowing visitors time away from their regular lives to focus on self-discovery without distractions or interruptions. It is also beneficial because it gives people a chance to connect with other like-minded individuals who share similar interests, which often results in forming strong friendships that last beyond the duration of one’s trip

Finally, when choosing an ayahuasca destination such as Peru over other countries such as Costa Rica or Colombia, there are certain advantages, including safety due to its legal status within certain regions (ie, Iquitos, the Sacred Valley, or Cusco). This means participants won’t have to worry about getting into trouble with authorities if caught taking part in some of these ayahuasca retreats, which often occur when visiting places where regulations aren’t clearly defined.

Additionally, those traveling abroad get insight into indigenous cultures, such as the Shipibo healers, by interacting directly with locals during their stay, making for more meaningful experiences than reading books about them back home.

Whether someone is interested in exploring ayahuasca shamanism, spirituality, connecting deeply with nature, or having transformative experiences – attending one of the Ayahuasca ceremonies In Peru offers all this and more. With its combination of physical beauty, rich culture, profound teachings, and connections made along the way – it truly stands out amongst other destinations around South America.

The ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru may offer a transformative journey for those seeking to delve deep into their inner and spiritual well-being. With that said, it’s essential to know what to expect when attending such a retreat so as not to be taken off guard by any surprises.

Attending an authentic ayahuasca retreat in Peru provides a unique chance to connect with ancestral healing rituals, experience the surrounding culture and landscape, and undergo a life-altering journey – all within legal parameters. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that offers something for everyone.

What to expect at the ayahuasca retreats in Peru

Ayahuasca tours in Peru are becoming a more frequent way to partake of the age-old healing rituals of native tribes through the use of the ayahuasca brew. Before attending a retreat, it is important to understand what you can expect during your stay.

Overview of the Retreat Experience:

Ayahuasca retreats allow participants to explore and gain insight into their spiritual self through shamanic rituals, plant medicine, and meditation practices used for centuries by Amazonian tribes.

At a retreat in Peru, guests will be guided through several days of ceremony with shamans and partake in activities such as yoga and breathwork.

The Role of Shamans During the Ayahuasca Ceremonies in Peru

Shamans are integral to ayahuasca retreats in Peru, as they are the ones who guide participants through healing ceremonies.

Shamans possess expertise in using ancient healing practices and herbs and are well-versed in their spiritual potential. They provide an essential link between physical and spiritual realms, allowing for powerful experiences that can help heal physical and emotional issues.

During an ayahuasca retreat, shamans will lead participants through rituals that involve chanting, drumming, singing, dancing, and more.

These activities aim to create a safe space where individuals can open up spiritually and access deeper levels of consciousness.

By facilitating healing on both a mental/emotional and physical level, shamans guide participants to gain insight into how their life circumstances can influence them.

The personal shamanic treatments aim to guarantee a secure ayahuasca ceremony, providing assistance and monitoring for any likely risks of emotional trauma or adverse effects of the intense experience.

Shamans often act as mediators between humans and nature spirits or deities during these sessions; they may call upon certain energies or entities to help bring about transformation within individuals participating in the ceremony.

The shaman’s role doesn’t end with leading ceremonial activities at an ayahuasca retreat center in Peru; they also provide one-on-one consultations to participants before and after the ceremony.

This allows them to address any questions or concerns about the experience, reflect on what happened afterward, and get advice from a seasoned expert in plant medicine work.

Ultimately, this ensures that everyone involved gets something meaningful out of it – whether it was a one-off event or part of a series – by providing an opportunity for further integration into everyday life following the ceremony.

The role of shamans during an ayahuasca retreat in Peru is essential for creating a safe and meaningful experience, providing guidance and insight throughout the journey.

Moving on to the next heading, we will explore how best to integrate your newfound knowledge after an ayahuasca retreat in Peru.

Shamans are an essential link between physical and spiritual realms to facilitate healing experiences at ayahuasca retreats in Peru.

Shamans lead retreaters in ceremonial activities, like vocalization, the beating of drums, singing, and moving around; additionally, they offer one-on-one conversations before and after the ceremony to enable a more effective transition into regular life.

Integrating Your Experience After an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

After an ayahuasca retreat in Peru, integrating your experience can be challenging yet rewarding. It is essential to remember that the revelations and curative benefits from ayahuasca rituals should be incorporated into daily life. This can be done by focusing on developing practices that will support your spiritual growth and transformation.

One way to do this is by creating rituals or activities around self-care. Incorporating yoga, or meditation classes, journaling, and breathwork – or any other activity that helps one feel connected to themselves – may be advantageous for assimilating the revelations from an ayahuasca ceremony into everyday life. Additionally, engaging with nature and spending time outdoors can help ground your energy after a powerful experience with plant medicine.

Connecting with those who have had similar experiences can be beneficial when reintegrating an ayahuasca retreat into everyday life, as they may provide much-needed support. Being part of a community of individuals who understand what you’ve been through and have gone through similar journeys can provide much-needed support during this transition period back home.

Joining online forums or attending workshops led by experienced shamans or facilitators may also offer helpful guidance for navigating post-retreat integration challenges, such as managing emotions or dealing with reintegration issues within family dynamics.

Finally, one key element of successful integration after spending time at one of the many ayahuasca retreat centers in Peru is honoring any commitments made while under the influence of the ayahuasca medicine itself – whether they were verbalized out loud during the ceremony or kept internally as intentions set forth at the start of each session.

Taking action towards achieving these promises serves as a reminder and reinforces our capacity for transformation, which was so powerfully revealed during ceremony time in sacred space. This may involve changing certain habits (e.g., diet), making lifestyle adjustments (e.g., career change), or committing more deeply to spiritual practice(e .g., prayer).

Integrating your experience after an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru is essential for long-term healing and growth. It’s important to consider safety when planning a day ayahuasca retreat, which we will discuss further in the next heading.

Integrating the teachings gleaned from a Peru ayahuasca retreat can be tricky, yet by engaging in self-care activities such as yoga or meditation and connecting with those who have experienced comparable journeys, and one can fulfill any pledges made while under the sacred plant medicine that’s effected. Ultimately, this helps reinforce your capacity for transformation.

Safety Considerations for an Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

Safety should be a top priority when considering an ayahuasca healing retreat in Peru. Due to its long-standing cultural history, the ayahuasca healing ceremonies are widely practiced today; however, knowing the safety precautions necessary for a successful ayahuasca healing retreat, is essential.

It is essential to research any retreat or healing center you plan on attending thoroughly before making your decision. Read reviews from past participants and ensure that the facility is clean and well-maintained. Ensure all staff members have received proper training and certification in their respective areas of expertise, such as shamanism or plant medicine healing. Additionally, inquire about the experience level of shamans leading ceremonies at the retreat center.

Before engaging in an ayahuasca brew ritual, it is essential to grasp the journey and how to prepare oneself mentally and physically. This includes abstaining from certain foods like dairy products or processed sugars, which can interfere with digestion during a ceremony, and avoiding recreational drugs, including marijuana which can interact negatively with the ayahuasca brew’s effects on consciousness. Participants should also arrive rested after getting plenty of sleep before arriving at a retreat center. Hence, they can better focus on their journey through altered states of consciousness while under its influence.

The role of shamans in an ayahuasca ceremony is critical; they act as guides throughout each individual’s journey, safeguarding against any negative energies or entities which may arise during deep meditation. Experienced practitioners both ayahuasca are particularly adept at this due to their extensive knowledge base gained through years of studying plant medicines like Ayahuasca.

Furthermore, with proper preparation and understanding of what will be expected during the experience, participants can maximize the potential benefits of a retreat while minimizing any associated risks.

It is essential to thoroughly research any ayahuasca retreat center before committing, ensuring that all staff members are trained and certified in their respective areas of expertise. Why Choose Our Ayahuasca Retreat?

  • Safety is our first priority – Ayahuasca Retreats at our center are done within a format that has been developed and practiced since 2009. Our operational model prioritizes participant safety and has proven to be both safe and tremendously effective
  • Personalized treatments – Our retreats offer numerous plant medicine treatments outside of ceremony. These include cleanses of the digestive system, nervous system, circulatory system, respiratory system, and immune system. Individualized treatments are also administered for each participant according to their specific needs.
  • Complimentary practices – In addition to the ayahuasca ceremonies, the plant remedies, and personalized treatments, our retreats also offer complimentary practices like guided meditation, yoga, breathwork ceremonies, cacao ceremonies, ecstatic dance, music workshops, and Shipibo culture lessons.
  • Small group sizes – We know that the bonds formed within the group are of great value to the healing experience and the amount of personal interaction with the staff is directly related to the outcomes of the retreat. We keep groups to a maximum of twelve people to keep the retreats manageable and ensure each participant receives more than enough attention.
  • Family style accommodations – We designed our lodge to be like a home, fostering the level of support for one another that exists in family. So much of the healing work involves our family experiences and memories, and the environment of our center as well as the community within which it is located enhances the healing potential of each group and individual.
  • Community support – Our retreat center is located inside the Mishana jungle community, inside a national reserve, and nearly all of the staff are from that community. Participants can see the benefits of their financial contributions in the community when they walk around and interact with the community members.
  • A paradise location – The center sits on the bank of the Nanay river, which is a great place for swimming, and is surrounded by over 100,000 acres of pristine forest. The center itself is completely off the grid yet offers electricity for fans in the rooms, hot water in the showers, and a level of comfort that is rare to find in the jungle.
  • Rainforest preservation – In collaboration with the organization One Million Acres, a portion of the cost of our ayahuasca retreat goes to support the preservation of the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous cultures, as well.

Spiritual Growth

Our aim is to provide you with the optimum environment for you to replant your spirit. All treatments and activities are optional, so go at your own pace. Two or three weeks is a relatively short period of time in a human being’s life, and we really see this process not as a complete and final solution to your problems, but rather as a new beginning, a foundation on which to build over time, providing inspiration for your spiritual growth. We are also here to let you know that anything is possible . What we have found is this: the people who take responsibility for their own healing, put their trust and faith in the plants and in us, let go of expectations and truly commit themselves with intention to their process. These people always get what they need , unfolding into the most profound depths of inner transformation possible for them, and are then gratefully ready to continue the work of integrating their experiences for the rest of their lives.

Focus on Care

Regardless of which retreat you choose, the Ayahuasca Foundation ensures that the highest level of care possible will be provided to you. Our staff is comprised of dedicated students who are always striving to learn more, do more, and be more. Even our curanderos who have decades of experience are always trying to improve and learn, but especially our assistant healers who manage the day to day activities during the programs. There is no end to what can be learned and improved upon, as there is no end to the depth of the ayahuasca healing tradition. It is truly limitless .

What can be treated on an Ayahuasca Retreat?

While a great deal of attention is given to the healing effects of ayahuasca in treating anxiety and depression, when combined with the use of a wide variety of other plants and natural plant remedies, there really is nothing that cannot be treated on an Ayahuasca Retreat.  Below is a listing of conditions and the effectiveness of treatment.

MENTAL & EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS

Depression is definitely the most common condition we treat and also the condition we have the most success in treating. With both the two and three week ayahuasca retreats we have a 100% success rate of improving depression, but improvement is only lasting if lifestyle changes are made after the retreat. We offer methods and practices for integration during our programs, as well as counseling afterwards, but it is ultimately up to each person to follow through.

Anxiety is a condition we treat very often and always with positive results. The tradition’s combination of treatment methods is ideal for treating both depression and anxiety, as well as a number of other conditions. Our ayahuasca retreats have a 100% success rate for improvement with treatment of anxiety, but again, it is up to each person to follow through on making and maintaining lifestyle changes after the retreat.

PTSD and the negative effects of emotional trauma are helped tremendously by treatment with the indigenous healing tradition during our ayahuasca retreats in the Amazon. Using a series of remedies that help to release pent up emotions, unlock buried memories, and reroute unhealthy neural pathways, the tradition provides a path towards acceptance, self-love, and optimism for a bright future.

Our ayahuasca retreats have a very high success rate treating Insomnia, as its causes are typically related to depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma. Simply from a chemical perspective, the effect ayahuasca has on the production of serotonin in the brain is very helpful, but finding balance at the root of the condition is key, and that is often achieved through the combination of several treatment methods.

In the treatment of OCD and other similar disorders, it is not so much about alleviating the condition, but rather discovering a more preferable manner of thinking and acting, and even more so, remembering self-love in an unconditional form. Accepting ourselves is an important step in any healing process, but most especially with conditions like these, and the Ayahuasca Foundation’s ayahuasca retreats in Peru can provide tremendous benefit.

Our ayahuasca retreats have had success in helping people struggling with addiction. It is certainly more challenging because the roots of addiction are so varied, although in general relate to emotional trauma and a lack of self love. With treatment for addiction, integration and a commitment to lasting lifestyle changes is essential. Turning the corner is achievable, but following the new path in life is more important. We do everything we can to assist with those processes.

DIGESTIVE CONDITIONS

Acid reflux.

Acid reflux has become one of the most common afflictions of the Western world. Poor eating habits combined with increased emotional stress create systemic enzyme imbalances that are difficult to treat, and, unfortunately, present an opportunity for pharmaceutical companies to take advantage of a maintainable condition. Particular plant treatments and a regimented diet can provide tremendous benefit. We have had great success during our ayahuasca retreats with the treatment of acid reflux.

Leaky gut is a different expression to similar roots as acid reflux. The treatment is also very similar. We have had very good success on our ayahuasca retreats with helping people who suffer from leaky gut, and many other digestive issues.

Candida is a troublesome condition for western treatment because it is an intelligent living being, aware and capable of learning. Therefore, treatment with unconscious chemicals is limiting and often causes adaptation of the being rather than eradication. Treatment with plants, however, which are also intelligent living beings capable of their own learning and adaptation, significantly increases the chances of success, which we have observed on numerous occasions with the treatment methods used during our ayahuasca retreats.

The treatment of ulcers goes beyond just the physical. Although the roots of the affliction are similar to acid reflux, the emotional aspects usually go deeper. A complete treatment is necessary. Our ayahuasca retreats have had very good results with the treatment of ulcers, but important lifestyle changes must follow. We assist with the maintenance of those changes.

Most people from the Western world don’t consider parasites a possibility unless they have traveled to a third world country, but parasites are everywhere. They go undetected due to a lack of proper testing within the western medical industry, and are often mistreated as a digestive issue. Our ayahuasca retreats have had tremendous success treating parasites, often times when participants did not know they had them.

All food allergies are a sign that something is not right. People don’t ‘just have’ an allergy to a normal food. Celiac disease is complicated by the current modification and distortion of gluten in the food industry, most especially in the mass production of bread (at least it’s called bread), but there is more going on within the immune system as well, which is compromised in various ways. While we have only had a handful of cases on our ayahuasca retreats, we have had great success with the treatment of all of them.

Crohn’s Disease

Like most digestive issues, Crohn’s disease is also linked to emotional trauma, stress, and improper diet. During our ayahuasca retreats we have only treated two cases of Crohn’s but both were successful treatments, with one of the participants being healed after 35 years of suffering. In both cases, after many years of chronic diarrhea and the other digestive issues associated with the disease, the participants were able to return to normal digestive processes, free from suffering.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

Allergies are nearly as prevalent in the people who attend our ayahuasca retreats as depression and anxiety, although most cases are not very serious. Our immune systems should naturally be able to defend against natural elements of our environment, but again, when compromised by toxicity, trauma, stress, and diet, there are obstacles in the way of health being achieved. We have had very good results treating allergies, but lifestyle changes are necessary as well.

At our ayahuasca retreats we have treated numerous cases of arthritis with good success. Only in the most extreme cases were we not able to achieve significant improvements, but even in those few cases, there was improvement. A number of treatments are involved, and there are some fantastic natural remedies employed in the process.

Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue can be a complicated condition to treat, for it is most likely a combination of various factors, including toxic environmental influences, emotional stress and/or trauma, depression, energy blockages, and poor diet/lifestyle. The treatment during our ayahuasca retreats involves heaving cleansing, which can be challenging because it requires effort on the part of the patient. Participation correlates directly to effectiveness.

The cleansing process involved in treatment coupled with the dietary restrictions during ayahuasca retreats make for a successful weight loss plan. It is very common to lose weight during a program, nearly guaranteed, but especially excess weight. We recently had someone lose 37lbs in three weeks (2lbs per day). Because the digestive system is rebalanced in the healing and the emotional issues at the core of the condition are addressed, weight usually continues to drop and stay off.

Sleep Apnea

We have only had a handful of participants on our ayahuasca retreats receive treatment for sleep apnea, but 100% found it very helpful, including two participants who were healed completely. Of course, like all other treatments, continuing with lifestyle changes after the retreat is necessary to maintain the health achieved during the programs.

We have successfully treated both glaucoma and cataracts with plant medicine during our ayahuasca retreats. There are clearly emotional and mental factors contributing to the conditions that are effectively addressed with this healing tradition. However, participation and faith in the process is imperative for success.

ILLNESS & DISEASE

While we have not had great success with treating type 1 Diabetes, we have been able to help nearly every participant treated for type 2 diabetes. Obviously, type 2 is influenced much more by lifestyle habits and diet, and so following our program helps tremendously, especially with the specific remedies used to control blood sugar levels. After the ayahuasca retreat, maintaining the healthy habits practiced during the program is very important.

We’ve only treated three cases of Hepatitis, and only one case of Hep B. All participants were helped significantly, along with anyone else suffering from liver or kidney problems. Cleansing the organs, boosting the immune system, and purifying the blood are parts of the physical aspects of treatment during our ayahuasca retreats, along with addressing mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis can be treated naturally using a number of healing traditions. The Amazon traditions, while beneficial, may not be the best choice, simply because the climate and environment is typically very uncomfortable for anyone suffering from MS. We have helped a few people with medicine brought back from the Amazon by another participant, but we usually recommend considering a tradition like San Pedro, which takes place in a more comfortable climate.

Cancer is a very broad category, but treatment methods all follow similar principles. Purification of the blood, boosting the immune system, and addressing the emotional roots of the condition are the methods that make up the core of treatment for most diseases. We have only treated three ayahuasca retreat participants for cancer. While one person was healed completely and remains cancer free over seven years later, the other two people were not healed, although their cases differed greatly as well as their attitudes and engagement with the process.

We have only treated three patients for AIDS/HIV but each participant benefited tremendously. All three reported that their lives had been completely transformed. One was totally healed and is still HIV negative after seven years, while the other two test negatively, but continue to take medication as a precaution. It is important to note that all three had profound faith in the process and engaged very well with the treatment and medicine.

Do the Ayahuasca Retreats feature Additional Activities?

Apart from the ayahuasca ceremonies and daily treatments, participants always have some free time each day.  They also have some options for how to spend that free time.  The Assistant Healers offer additional complementary activities to enhance the healing process and optimize the potential for healing with ayahuasca, plant medicines, and self reflection and discovery.  Below is a listing of additional activities.

Ayahuasca Retreat Reviews

Comments from Previous Retreat Participants

This place is just amazing.  Everyone here has been so great and so supportive.  It’s just a beautiful place to be, surrounded by nature, so much green, so many animals everywhere, not big animals, little ones.  And just having the river nearby, that was pretty glorious, and there’s this mud you can put all over yourself and let it draw all the toxins out and it just feels so great.  And the food was great, lots of good food.  Everything was just awesome.  It was a really good experience and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of coming down here.  Just do it.  It’s definitely worth it.  Life changing.  Thank you Ayahuasca Foundation.

I would say if you’re looking for a life changing experience, something that’s gonna have a positive significant effect on your life, then it’s definitely worth considering.  Almost words can’t describe… it’s been a clearly unique experience, something which I’ll value all my life, highly recommended.

What I’ve more or less accomplished and what I’m really grateful for is that I had a really strong, firm belief that something was wrong with me which prevented me from fully accepting myself and I really feel that I have been able to get over it so I’ve been able to let go of this limiting belief and replace it with self love. I’m not saying that I’m there, I still have a long way to go as everybody, but that the roots of this negative belief are gone, which opened the way for me to actually love myself.

It’s been great. It’s felt like I’ve lived a lifetime in three weeks. I’ve really been able to almost reprogram myself and undo a lot of negative habits and a lot of negative ways of thinking about myself and my life and my past. It’s really brought a lot of healing and closure in many aspects of many lingering issues. It’s great. It’s fantastic. It’s been really lovely. It’s very comfortable. The location with the Mishana community is fantastic. Being able to interact with people and being on a reserve is lovely, being able to go hiking and experience the indigenous nature. It’s also great that there are no mosquitoes here.

You should come.  Absolutely, hands down, yes please.  It’s gonna put some perspective in your life, bring you back to faith, strength, courage, and happiness and healing that’s perpetuated by myself, and that is wicked.  It’ll make you whole and a big part of it is the plants as well, not just the ayahuasca.  Absolutely do it.

Shamanic Tour of Peru

Shamanic Tour of Peru

  • Apr 25, 2021

February 21-March 2nd 2022

This is a guided Shamanic Tour of Peru. Before you go any further you should understand that there is a liability with traveling in Peru alone, or without someone who knows these areas. One can wind up being stranded without a taxi at many of these sites or without accessibility to Uber. We are experts, I myself am an American that speaks English as my first language and mi Novia is a citizen of Peru that speaks Spanish as her first language, she is an architecture student, we are both spiritual and have mapped out the journeys very well. We will also be taking you for some of the best food you have ever had in your life, near these locations. If you are vegan or don’t eat fish, good luck explaining that to the locals. Kidding, not kidding. We will help to get something to satisfy you. We will be visiting many different sites depending on weather conditions and any applicable Peruvian laws. These sites include:

There will be one group that travels on the western coast of Peru. Cusco is a separate trip and is not the purpose of this exploration as there is many systems already set up to assist travelers in Cusco (Machu Picchu). We will also have a different comprehensive expedition for this, far beyond just Machu Picchu (expert level).

The hotel of choice for this exploration will be the Selina Miraflores because of its location both in terms of safety and accessibility to food and other necessities in Peru. Further, the cost of lodging and the different types of lodging to accommodate all visitors. For the price, you will not be disappointed. If it is your first time visiting Peru it is a humbling experience, it is very different in terms of architecture and style of living than in America or Europe. The food is tasty but do not try to eat one day old food, they do not use preservatives. The journey will be for many days and we will do the best to accommodate everyone. We will assure ,you using our own spiritual guidance and knowledge of the areas, that you will get to see pyramids (Waccas) and you will get a very good value from our tour. We are not here to gouge foreigners, everyone can use google. But this trip is not as simple as renting a car and driving. The roads in Peru are very different than in America and the trips do come with a degree of caution in some areas, as safety is always our main priority. We hope to help you have a magical trip of a lifetime

10 Days: Transportation to all sites is our responsibility. The hotel is yours. Our transportations pickup destination is the Selina in Miraflores. Delicious meals included on full day trips to Caral and other distant locations at local restaurants, the food is very tasty and authentic. Trips in Lima will require you to get your own food which is very simple; we can get you any food you would like with our Rappi for about $20; but this is not included. We will accompany requests as some are more adventurous than others and there are many possible locations. Some prefer to see one huaca or pyramid and relax others want to see many in a day. Some energies are more intense than others.

Both packages include 2 flexibility days to accommodate for rain, change in plans, possible water illness, or a pool trip. If we have an ambitious group we will go 10 days nonstop- its up to you. We will keep going until you feel you got your moneys worth :)

Professional pictures at all sites included.

*You will be visiting many spiritual vortexes in a short time period, if you are energetically sensitive please prepare yourself well before arrival.

*If you are really adventurous I will even take you overnight camping at an open Wacca (Ruins/Pyramid/vortex), bring a machete and a friend it is not for the faint of heart.

Things to know about Peru:

-Do not drink the water

-TAXIS DO NOT RUN EVERYWHERE without proper planning you can get stranded

-You need a different GPS Software called Waze

-You need to speak some Spanish or be with a translator to navigate most locations (provided)

What I Learned From A Shaman In Peru

shaman tour peru

  • Machu Picchu

When I went to Peru, seeing a shaman was on my “must do” list, and taking ayahuasca was on my “maybe do” list. The culture of mysticism in Peru is both alluring, and something to do your research on.

I ended up seeing three shamans during my month in Peru . Two were in Cusco, and one was in Aguas Calientes, the small town where I spent a night before climbing Machu Picchu .

Aguas Calientes, Peru, where Heather Markel considered seeing a shaman.

During my travels, I’ve been fascinated at how, when I have a question on my mind, I end up meeting someone that has the answer for me. I traveled to Huacachina , wondering whether I should try ayahuasca while in Peru.

I’ve heard that people have amazing epiphanies and soul-enriching experiences with ayahuasca, but it’s still a plant-based psychedelic, and I felt unsure whether to take it. I met two people, one a local who had used it in the past, and both of their descriptions made me rethink the wisdom of me drinking this brew. I decided it would be something I could speak about with the shaman I’d be working with.

Center of Cusco, Peru.

My Experience

The first shaman I saw was recommended to me by the guide of my free walking tour in Cusco. She worked in a medicinal herb and plant shop in Cusco, which sadly closed during the pandemic. I walked up a steep hill, which, with the high altitude, had to be done in stages because I was so winded! After what felt like hours of effort, I arrived at the shop, only to find that the shaman wasn’t there until the next day. I booked an appointment and returned the following day, breathless, and eager.

We sat at a private table outside the shop. She opened a cloth and spread coca leaves on top. She chose five of them, which she said were representative of me, and explained what she saw before even asking me what I wanted to know, or getting any information about me. I was pleasantly surprised when she told me that the world is my home, and I must continue traveling, at which my heart leaped with joy. Having chosen a life of full-time travel, it felt wonderful to be validated. She also told me my head and heart must work in harmony — this is something I’ve begun working on since quitting my “normal life” to travel, and again, made me feel seen and acknowledged.

One thing I was uncomfortable with was getting a bottle of San Pedro cactus plant drops which she said would help my head and heart work together. I tried the drops a couple of times and felt strange. Reading up on it, I learned they are hallucinogenic. I stopped taking them, and the bottle coincidentally spilled in my bag, so there goes that!

The second shaman I saw was somewhat disappointing. I found her through a shaman shop on one of Cusco’s main streets. The price was almost as much as it would be in America and too expensive. I complained and got a discount, at the very least. She seemed a bit exhausted, and I didn’t feel the same connection to her that I had with the medicine woman. Nonetheless, she also confirmed that I was on the right path with my life, after so much anxiety about changing it.

Train in Aguas Calientes, Peru.

The third shaman, in Aguas Calientes, was my favorite. A friend told me about him, but I had trouble finding him. I walked up the street I was directed to, but couldn’t find the shop he worked in. I tried on 2 separate days, looking right and left, very carefully and slowly the second time. Still, I couldn’t find it. I resigned to give up, turned around, and found the store right in front of me. Once inside, I immediately loved the energy and learned the owner made most of the jewelry there. I purchased a necklace representing Mother Earth, and still wear it today. I inquired about the shaman, Ignacio, and the owner called him. Ignacio arrived 10 minutes later. He spoke only Spanish. I could have had an interpreter, but decided to wing it.

The other two shamans focused more on readings, but Ignacio did a healing energy cleansing with me. His energy was so strong that when he placed a stone in my hand, I felt its pulse. I hadn’t told him anything about myself, and he made a point of doing some work on my back and neck, after which the pain from the herniated discs I hadn’t told him about eased.

Ignacio taught me that I must spend more time in nature and listen to it, and we agreed ayahuasca is not the path for me. (How ironic that I was later gifted 2 years in New Zealand, mostly surrounded by nature and learning from it.)

I was intrigued that three different shamans had such similar things to tell me about my life path without knowing anything about me. Now, 2 years since meeting them, much of what they told me still rings true. I was also happy to be guided by Ignacio not to take ayahuasca. It made my decision feel right. If I were to repeat the experience, I would put more faith in my intuition, which would have meant not meeting with the second shaman. Otherwise, I would absolutely go back to the plant medicine woman and see Ignacio again, who truly felt like he was part of ancient Peru and in integrity with the land and his practices. I love that, to my knowledge, you can’t find him on a website, only by recommendation. I’m glad I worked with different types of shamans, so I got to experience both a reading and a healing energy experience.

If you plan a trip to Peru and want to do ayahuasca or meet with a shaman, make sure to do your research. As in any country, there are honest people and less honest people.

Here are a few tips:

Ask For Recommendations

Speak with people you know who have been to Peru and worked with a shaman to find someone trustworthy.

Don’t Do Ayahuasca Alone

Especially if you’re a solo, female traveler, you want to make sure you have a buddy with you. When you do ayahuasca, you have no control over your body (that includes physical waste). You’ll also be in a euphoric state for a while, and need to make sure you’re working with someone who doesn’t take advantage of you.

Realize That Ayahuasca Is Sacred, But Not Everyone Treats It That Way

I learned that the true way to use this plant is by undergoing a strict 2-week cleanse that gets your body ready for the experience. You should ideally work with a shaman who gets to know you personally to understand what dosage is right for you, as an individual. Unfortunately, a market has been created for westerners who want to fly in for their weekend ayahuasca fix. Though many people have amazing insights from the experience, it’s still a substance that not everyone does well with. Make sure to carefully research before you choose who to put your trust in.

The Andean tradition in Cusco shows us one of the innumerable paths that we can find for evolution and personal awakening, self-knowledge, and the release of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual burdens, that is, it shows us traditional forms that have transcended in time, through Andean ceremonies.

Like many other cultures around the world, the Incas followed the laws of Nature, which they summarized in meetings or "Ceremonies", the representation of the cosmos, alchemy typical of the evolution of beliefs, traditions, and rituals of pre-Columbian societies in Peru.

Today the inhabitants of the "Qeros" community maintain this ancestral knowledge, these shamanic ceremonies inherited today by Danilo, who will give us the opportunity to learn to connect directly with Nature, seeking a better quality of life.

Ancestral Ceremonies Peru

WE RECOMMEND YOU TO:

- Use boots or athletic shoes during walks. - Drinking lots of water on long excursions, especially at Lake Titikaka. - Always take an umbrella or rainwear.

The tap water in most of Peru is potable, but the chemical content varies from place to place. To avoid problems, we recommend that you always drink bottled water, which is readily available everywhere for purchase. Do not drink any tap water, even to brush your teeth. Do not eat any raw salads, raw fruits or raw vegetables. If you want to purify your water before drinking it, your can either bring a 220-volt heating coil for boiling water, or you can use water-purification tablets or a water purifier, which is available at any camping store.

Pickpockets abound in crowded areas and muggings in Cusco are on the rise. Therefore you are advised to leave all valuables in the hotel safe, including passport, credit cards, and other identifying papers. You are advised to leave valuable clothing, precious jewelry, valuable papers, and all unnecessary items at home and not take them to Peru.

Because you are visiting Andean areas, take precautions to avoid altitude sickness if you are prone to it. During your first day move slowly and eat lightly, resting the first couple of hours. Drink lots of bottled water. We recommend that you get CELL FOOD from a health food store. This product, created by NASA, has components to produce oxygen in a liquid form.

Please consult the CDC website for health information, and please keep in mind that we will not be visiting any tropical regions in Peru: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/peru.htm

NOTES ON WALKING:

Some visits involve a lot of walking at very high altitudes. A walking stick can be helpful, and is available to purchase in Peru, if you don't want to bring one.

*Machu Picchu, from the entrance, we will walk uphill to a viewpoint above the city, about one mile steep walk. Within the city, many stairs to climb.

*Amantani Island, from the port on the island we will walk a distance of one mile steeply uphill to get to the houses where we will be lodged. The next morning, the ones who feel ready will climb to the temples, which are one more mile uphill from the houses. In none of these place we are running; we are walking and taking our time. The difference altitude from the port to the temples in the next day is about 1000 feet. If some feel that they can not make to the temples can wait in the lower part of the island.

*Ajayu Marka Dimensional Door Way, from the bus we will walk a few meters to the first stops, not very far to walk. For the second part, we need to walk half a mile to get to the Dimensional Doorway. This is flat.

*Sillustani, here we will do a walk of about half a mile, with some little climbing, but accessible.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

At the airport in Cusco, as long as you have booked your hotel through us and have notified us of your flight itinerary, you will be met by our representative with a placard that has your name on it, and you will be transported to your hotel. At the time of your departure from Juliaco, our representative will take you to the airport. If you sent us your detailed flight information, you will be all set.

Weather and loading and unloading can cause more than usual wear and tear to luggage in Peru. Accordingly, all luggage should be capable of withstanding rain and rugged treatment. For your flights within Peru, the total number of free checked bags is 2, and the TOTAL combined weight limit for those 2 bags is 20 kilograms (44 pounds). If you exceed this weight, you will have to pay a penalty. The maximum size of each checked bag is 158 cm (60 in) length x width x height.

Generally as you arrive at the hotels, you do not need to handle luggage from one place to another. You have to identify your luggage to the porters of hotels so they can carry your luggage to your room. We recommend that all bags have your identification name in order to bring to your room or to the places you need.

Carry-On Allowance: 1 Bag + 1 Personal Item

Each passenger is allowed to carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse or briefcase. Assistive devices and outer garments do not count as personal items. All carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you and adhere to the following requirements:

     - Maximum Weight of Carry-on Luggage for first and business class: 16kg/35lb*      - Maximum Weight of Carry-on Luggage for economy class: 8kg/18lb      - Maximum Dimensions of Carry-on Luggage: 46 linear inches/115 cm (22x14x10 in/ 55x35x25 cm)      - Maximum Dimensions of Personal Item: 21in x 16in x 8in (length x width x height) * In addition, first and business class passengers may take a folding garment bag.

Checked Baggage Allowance for domestic flights within Peru

     - First class: 88lb/40kg      - Business class: 66lb/30kg      - Economy class: 44lb/20kg

Excess, overweight, and oversize baggage fees vary by route.

Excess baggage is defined as:      - An extra piece in addition to the two check bags permitted.      - Any piece exceeding the permitted dimensions.      - Any piece weighing 50 lb/23kg - 70lb/32kg: $50      - Any piece weighing 70 lb/32kg - 99lb/45kg will be charged according to the route.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

One U.S. dollar = approximately 2.58 PEN Perun Nuevo Sol (subject to fluctuation). One PEN = approximately U.S. dollar $.38. You may experience difficulty in exchanging traveler's checks outside Lima or in exchanging currency other than U.S. Dollars. Please consider changing your money in Lima. There is usually a currency exchange bank at international airports such as in Lima. That would be a good option for changing money.

Important: If you bring U.S. Dollars to exchange for PEN, or to pay for any goods or services in Peru, the locals will not accept any tears or damages in the currency notes. So bring crisp new notes from the bank.

Be sure to get travel insurance in case you need to cancel for any reason. Divine Travels carries no travel insurance. Please go to: [email protected] .

There are laundry services at the main towns, and the hotels are also doing this service. In Cusco, after returning from Machu Picchu, you can use laundry at the hotel or at the different houses in town. Of course the hotels are always more expensive.

Internet cafes abound in Peru. You will have the opportunity to connect via the Internet in many places. There is Internet service all over the main towns and in some little ones. There are Internet cabins or Internet cafes in many places, but if you prefer, you can bring your own laptop with all the accessories to plug in some of the hotels or even Internet cafes with wireless. In nearly all the hotels you find some internet services. Some are charging US $2 per hour, and others offer for free. In towns you pay US $1 per hour.

Be sure to bring an adapter for Peru/South America so you can plug in to the 220 voltage system in Peru. Usually the wall sockets look the same as in the USA. But on occasions, you might find a socket for rounded plugs rather than flat USA-style plugs. Nearly all laptops and cell phone adapters are already built for dual voltage (110 and 220), so you would not need a transformer unless you are plugging in something that is 110 volt only. But if your appliance or device is 110 volt only, you will need to bring a transformer. Otherwise you will burn out your appliance or device within seconds.

PHONE CALLS

There are call centers in all the towns where you can make international phone calls for about 30 to 50 cents per minute. If you wish to use your cell phone, you can make arrangements with your phone carrier to make international calls while you are in Peru.

REMEMBER TO BRING:

-Passport (and visa, if required from your country). -Airplane tickets or E-Ticket page with confirmation number and/or ticket number. -Camera and camcorder, and extra batteries, to photograph interdimensional lights or beings. -Clothing for Winter (June to Sept.): Temperature can get down to below freezing. -Clothing for temperatures listed in chart above. Please note low temperatures. -Gloves, scarf. -Warm jacket. -Hiking shoes or athletic shoes. -Warm socks. -Warm hat or cap. -Swimming suit (in case there's a clean pool available). -You can buy alpaca sweaters in Peru. -Sunscreen. -Sunhat. -Toilet paper for emergencies. -Antiseptic wipes for emergencies. -Binoculars, if you enjoy them. -Sunglasses, if needed. -Seat cushion for rocky or wet ground, if you feel you need it. -Rain poncho or other rainwear (it may rain, even during dry season) -Gifts for children, such as boxes of crayolas, boxes of pencils, toys, or clothing. -A few crystals, sage, or sweetgrass, to give to Pachamama in ceremonies. -Alarm clock. -Do not bring expensive jewelry or perfume. -Plastic bags for dirty and wet clothes. -Flashlight and extra batteries. -Backpack, fannypack, and secret pack for valuables. -Prescriptions, vitamins, and medications. -Wash kit, water bottle and water purifying tablets. -Personal first aid kit. -Immodium for diarrhea. -May consider bringing oscillococcinum, aspirin, CO-Q10, E-mergen-C, L-Tyrosine, DMG. -CELL FOOD: A product for high altitudes, created by NASA, that produces oxygen in a liquid form.

GIFTS FOR CHILDREN

About the gifts, we recommend to bring colors, crayons, pens, notebooks, pencils, toys, clothes, or others, but not candies or chemical products. The quantity is never easy to say. For sure, children will love to receive more than one piece--at least two or more. There will be at least three or four places where we meet children from communities or little villages in the Lake Titikaka area.

Dengue fever, once confined to the tropics, now threatens the U.S.

Meg Norris was traveling in Argentina in April when the first signs of dengue fever hit her. The weather in Salta, just south of the Bolivian border, was warm, but Norris, a 33-year-old from Boulder, Colorado, zipped a fleece sweatshirt around her body to stop herself from shivering.

“I thought it was sun poisoning,” she said.

She woke that night in a sweat and spent the hours alternately burning up then freezing. In the morning, her eyes were sore and her lymph nodes were swollen. For the following week, there was nothing to do but sleep, stay hydrated and wait for the body aches that give the illness the moniker “break-bone fever” to pass.

Meg Norris traveling in northern Argentina in April 2024.

Latin America is experiencing its worst dengue fever outbreak on record. Case numbers in the first 4 ½ months of 2024 are already 238% higher than they were by this time last year, which itself ended with a record 4.1 million cases, according to the Pan American Health Organization . Cases are more than 400% higher than the five-year average.

An unusually wet and warm summer season brought by the El Niño weather pattern has created ideal conditions for the mosquitoes that spread dengue to hatch en masse and carry higher amounts of the virus.

Experts warn this could be a preview of what dengue fever will look like in the future. Climate change is creating unusually balmy conditions, which are already expanding the range of mosquito-borne diseases.

“That’s concerning for places where dengue hasn’t occurred before in recent history: North America and Europe,” said Dr. Albert Ko, a professor of epidemiology of microbial diseases at the Yale School of Public Health.

Dengue is a viral fever caused by four different viruses and spread through mosquito bites. It’s common in many tropical regions across the globe, but has begun to appear in more temperate climates. The mosquitoes that carry dengue fever, Aedes aegypti are now regularly found in the southern parts of the U.S., but recently, the insects have been found as far north as the Bay Area and Washington, D.C. One 2019 study predicted an additional 2 billion people will be at risk for dengue fever by 2080.

“We are definitely worried,” Ko said.

Why are dengue cases rising around the world?

Dengue outbreaks have historically occurred in the Americas every three to four years, said Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, dengue branch chief in the division of vector-borne diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “But now we are seeing them every year,” she said.

Part of the reason for that is tied to climate change.

A warming climate expands the mosquitoes’ habitat and allows them to breed all year long, rather than only in the warmer months. The hotter temperatures also cause the viruses to replicate faster, meaning mosquitoes end up carrying many more viral copies, increasing the likelihood that a person will become infected if bitten.

“We are also seeing dengue cause outbreaks at times when they usually don’t occur,” Ko said.

South America’s dengue cases weren’t just unusually high this year, but they also came unusually early in the season. Similarly, Puerto Rico, a place where dengue outbreaks can occur in the summer and fall, declared a public health emergency in late March after the U.S. territory was overtaken by dengue fever cases and more than 400 people were hospitalized .

In recent years, the epidemic has spread to parts of southern Brazil and northern Argentina, where dengue hasn’t previously been a big problem, Ko said.

“That gives us a snapshot of what we may see here in North America in the coming decades,” Ko said.

How would dengue get a foothold in the U.S.?

The fact that Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are found in places outside their normal range doesn’t mean the mosquitoes are carrying dengue viruses, but those first insects are a warning of what may be to come, Ko added

Locally transmitted dengue fever infections — meaning the infected person didn’t get sick abroad — are still rare in the continental U.S., but have recently been seen for the first time in some states. Last October, California health officials reported the state’s first case of locally transmitted dengue in Pasadena. Local transmission has also occurred in Arizona, Florida and the southern coast of Texas. Last summer brought record-breaking heat waves to Europe, where cases of local dengue transmission were seen in France, Italy and Spain.

“I think this means dengue will become more common,” said Paz-Bailey, adding that the main concern is still the significant increase in cases where the virus is already endemic.

This summer, she does not expect to see significant dengue outbreaks on the U.S. mainland, but she said there is likely to be some people who travel to regions that have higher-than-usual cases and bring the virus back home.

“Travel-associated cases do result in small chains of outbreaks,” Paz-Bailey said.

Humans are reservoirs for dengue, so in order to have widespread transmission, enough people must be infected for the mosquitoes to reliably bite someone with the virus so that they can spread it to another person.

“That’s why we’re seeing an outbreak of dengue in Puerto Rico right now,” said Michael von Fricken, director of the One Health Center of Excellence at the University of Florida in Gainesville. “They’ve reached this tipping point where there are enough infected humans that they’re subsequently infecting other mosquitoes that are continuing to transmit disease.”

Florida has logged 176 dengue cases so far this year, the vast majority in people who were infected in other countries, most frequently Brazil or Cuba. The Florida Health Department has recorded only seven cases of locally transmitted dengue transmission in the state so far this year. In all of 2023, the department documented 173 locally transmitted cases, most of them in Miami-Dade County.

What are the symptoms of dengue fever?

Dengue fever is caused by four viruses, so a person can be infected four times in their lifetime. Only about 1 in 4 people are symptomatic the first time they’re infected, according to the CDC.

Ko said a person’s initial symptoms are usually a fever and headaches. Fatigue, nausea, vomiting, a rash that looks like measles, as well as the extremely painful body aches.

Most people recover in a week or two, but about 1 in 20 people develop severe dengue, which can be fatal. The more times a person is infected with dengue, the higher risk they are for complications.

“After you’ve had your first exposure, your risk of having dengue hemorrhagic fever or severe symptoms increases exponentially,” Von Fricken said. Dengue also becomes deadlier with each infection.

While the U.S. does have a dengue vaccine, it’s approved only for children ages 9 to 16 who live in places where dengue is endemic, including Puerto Rico, American Samoa or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

What’s more, children can get the vaccine only if they’ve previously had a dengue infection. That’s because if a person were to get vaccinated and then get their first dengue infection, they still run the risk of getting very sick, just as someone gets sicker from their second infection. Since most Americans have not had dengue, “that vaccine is not very useful” for most, Ko said.

There’s no specific drug to treat dengue. Instead, doctors just aim to treat the symptoms and keep the patient comfortable until the virus runs its course. That means resting and drinking a lot of fluids. Ko said people should try to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain and fever if they can, since nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include ibuprofen and aspirin, can make bleeding worse if someone develops hemorrhagic dengue, in which their blood vessels are damaged and become leaky.

Paz-Bailey said it’s important for people traveling to places with dengue to stay in places with air conditioning when possible, use insect-repellant and wear long sleeves and pants to avoid mosquito bites.

Bed nets can be helpful, but the mosquitoes that carry dengue typically bite during the day, so they may be less helpful than they are at preventing other mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, Ko said.

At home, people can make their yards less appealing to mosquitos by reducing the amount of standing water, especially after a bout of rain.

“It’s difficult to control the mosquito population, so we need to hit it with all we have and layer our strategies,” Paz-Bailey said. “No single strategy will be good enough.”
