What to Wear on a Safari in Africa

When you’re on safari, you want to blend into nature as much as possible. Sure, you’re going to be in a big truck and clearly not a part of nature, but you still want to be hard for the animals to spot. For example, sometimes guides won’t want you to stand up in the vehicle because some animals will run when they see the outline of a human (at least that’s what I heard).

Safari Clothing Colors

Certain colors work best on safari. You want to wear neutral, nature tones, like olive green and beige . You can even get away with browns and very neutral colors and still look the part, but avoid white (too bright in the sun), black or dark blue. These dark colors attract Tsetse flies which have a painful bite, so if nothing else, just avoid dark colors.

You also want to avoid wearing anything camouflage on safari, just to be safe. Many African countries actually prohibit wearing camo.

Truthfully, I’m not sure how much it matters what color you wear as far as the animals are concerned. Like I said, you’re in a truck the whole time so it may or may not really make a difference if you wear the classic safari outfits. For me, it was really important to get the full safari experience, clothes and all. And I imagine you’re reading this because you feel the same. 🙂

Choosing the Right Fabrics for Your Safari Outfits

You’re going to be spending hours outside (maybe even your entire day for full-day safaris), so you want to choose lightweight, breathable fabrics that will be comfortable through heat, sweat and wind.

Man-made performance fabrics that are breathable and sweat-wicking will work great, as well as quality cotton, linen and even wool.

Keep in mind you want to be able to protect yourself from the sun and easily add/remove layers for when it’s cold in the morning and evening.

Safari Clothes Comfort

When on safari, you need to be comfortable more than anything . You’re going to be sitting in a truck bumping up an down for hours on end (don’t worry it’s way more fun than it sounds) and it’s so important that your clothes don’t take away from your experience.

Another thing to know is that you may be using the bathroom…in the bush. Yes, I mean outside. Behind the truck. So you definitely want to wear clothes that you can quickly squat down in and do your business.

Skip the jeans and find comfortable pants in a neutral tone like olive green or beige. You could wear cotton pants, leggings, a jumpsuit or even shorts. Just make sure to check the weather of your destination and how bad the mosquitos are so you’re covered up enough for the conditions.

Remember, you’ll likely be starting your safari around 6:30am and many African countries get pretty cold. On my recent safari in Masai Mara, Kenya in October, the mornings were around 60°F. I’d wear a sweater over my outfit, then wrap up in the traditional Masai wraps our safari guide gave us.

For tops, you want to keep sun protection in mind as well as comfort. Even though you’re in a vehicle, you still get a decent amount of sun.

A thin button up shirt with sleeves that can roll up is perfect for sun protection. However, I recommend wearing a lighter top, like a tank top or lightweight t-shirt, and bringing the button up along. That way you’re comfortable at the warmest part of the day, and you can put on a layer if you get cold or need sun protection.

You could even wear a dress for the day as long as it’s long enough to keep you warm in the mornings. I didn’t bring a dress on my trip, but I wish I did! It would have been so comfy and convenient.

Pack a good sun hat with a neck strap, a scarf to protect your neck (even better if you can use it as a shawl for sun protection) and a lightweight sweater or jacket to get you through chilly mornings.

On safari, you can wear pretty much any shoes you want, including tennis shoes, boots or sandals. If you do go the sandals route, I recommend wearing a sturdy pair like Birkenstocks or even Rainbows, versus thin rubber flip flops. You don’t do too much walking on safari, except when stopping in the bush to eat lunch or use the bathroom. The Masai Tribe people all wear sandals, if that helps convince you. 😉

I was DEAD SET on wearing boots on my safari in Kenya. I just couldn’t see the perfect safari outfits in my mind working with anything but boots. After searching high and low for bougie leather boots and returning THREE pairs of $175 boots that didn’t fit, I ended up getting chic, simple rain boots for under $35!  I absolutely love the boots because they’re waterproof, stylish and extremely comfortable.

How to Find Affordable Outfits for Safari

Your African safari trip is going to be expensive enough. There’s no reason to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe for it. By combining new and thrifted items with that you already have, you can create amazing safari outfits that look killer in pictures, without breaking the bank.

I got all the pieces I needed to complete my safari wear for $100 by shopping used at Goodwill and a local boutique. Here’s how I did it.

Find the Safari Clothes in Your Closet

Go through your closet and pull out anything light colored and comfortable that you think could work on safari. Think tees, tanks, sweaters, scarves, pants and leggings. It doesn’t matter how much or little you have, you’re going to build on whatever you need when shopping.

Once you have a pile of safari-type clothes, make a list of the pieces you need so you know what to look for when thrifting.

Finding Safari Clothes at Goodwill or a Thrift Store

If you’re in the United States, it’s likely you have a few Goodwill stores in your area. Head to the one that’s in the wealthiest area near you and plan to spend around three hours shopping.

Once you get to the store, grab a cart and go up and down every single aisle for women’s clothing. Look for olive green and beige clothes specifically, and grab anything in those colors that looks like it might fit you. If your Goodwill is anything like the one in my town, you’ll be shocked at how many cool pieces you find!

Once you have a cart full, head to the dressing rooms. Trying clothes on is *the key* to finding gems at Goodwill or any thrift store, so definitely make time for it. When I tried on all items in my cart, I was shocked at what fit and what didn’t. Sometimes the item that looks like it’s impossible ends up being the best find of the day after you’ve tried it on!

Finding Safari Clothes In Stores & Online

If you don’t find everything you need second-hand, look for safari clothes online. Once you’ve gone through your closet and determined the items you still need, it’s much easier to shop online because you can search for each specific piece. Pinterest is amazing for inspiration (of course!).

I know this post was about wardrobe choices and while i searched for promised upcoming posts, there weren’t any. I am heading off to So Africa in june w a group of somewHat adventurous ladies (ages 20 to 72) and was looking for Sites/articles to point them to where they might find some useful info. . While i safari annually, they are all safari virgins. With that in mind, i might suggest a few additions that may help for a 1st trek into the bush should you post again:

1. Insect repellent. Yes. All camps provide bug spray (some even providing coils to burn in your tent), but i always brIng deet. Never spray 100% on your skin. The best way to use DEET is to spray it on any cotton Clothing or scarf you are wearing. A drop or 2 on the shoulder and sleeve edges and on your socks works miracles For the pre-sunrise drive and for the sundowners. I also bring bandanas. Spray then twist tightly and tie loosely around Your neck.

2. While cotton tees or leggings may seem like a good idea, i prefer fabrics that are easily hand washed and can dry quickly inside your tent. (You haven’t laughed until you hear that obnoxious “affluent” poseur with the LV duffel screaming bloody murder as you catch a glimpse of a huge male baboon scampering away with her undoubtedly expensive red brassiere because she left it on the deck chaise to dry.) it may seem that portland-based columbia sportswear is distributed gratis as you go through immigration because it is omnipresent but its my go to garb.

3. Travel insurance is an absolute must. Full stop. Not just for missed flights but it also came in handy earlier this year when i was thrown out of the land rover after bouncing into and out of a collapsed warthog burrow – and who knew warthogs lived in burrows! The airlift flight to the hospital in lusaka, Zambia, was also covered. American express also replaced the brand new MIRRORLESS canon and the 100-500mm lens since they were both 4 days old.

4. Side trip suggestions are always helpful. The Blixen house, of course. The Sheldrick sanctuary as well. For other locations – Robben island…victoria falls… the wineries…the delta… the only thing i would wave off is the migration. Who really needs to see what can only be DESCRIBED as the world’s LARGEST buffet for the top of africa’s Predatory food chain?

All suggestions are just my two cehts. Enjoy.

Fiona

Finally! someone who gets that it’s not about spending $400 on a jacket or $300 for a pair of pants! Like you, I picked out of my wardrobe first and hit goodwill and a favorite thrift store for the fill-ins. 3 columbia shirts (2 brand new) total $20. Tuesdays are 25% off for seniors! my local thrift store had a gorgeous exofficio brand new dark green button up shirt that feels like silk for $8..boots from a consignment store (where I had a credit)..cost $0!!! i’d rather have the money to do other things..half the fun is planning and looking for cool items. 🙂 looking forward to my trip this year!

Exactly! I totally agree. Have an amazing trip!!

1. What to Wear on Safari for Women: Packing List

I’ll give you a quick packing list on what to wear on safari for women and then give you plenty of tips and outfit inspiration below! Here are some essentials to include on your packing list:

  • Lightweight Pants
  • Long-sleeve tops (bonus points if they have UPF protection)
  • Tanks/ T-shirts to wear under your long-sleeves
  • Trail runners (or some kind of sturdy closed-toed shoe)
  • Accessories (bandana, scarf, hair scarf)

What to wear on safari for women: olive green pants, khaki shirt, and sun hat.

2. Choose Neutral Colors

When it comes to what to wear on safari for women, neutral colors are your best bet. Avoid bright colors, which can attract unwanted attention from animals and make it more difficult to blend in with your surroundings. Stick to earth tones like khaki, light grey, light blue, and olive green. The good news is these colors all hide dirt pretty well and safaris can get quite dusty. I include a ton of example outfits in my post for inspiration, so keep on scrolling!

I would definitely avoid bright blue and black, as these colors attract tsetse flies. Also avoid camouflage in some countries since it is designated for military use.

3. Pick Clothing Made of Breathable Fabric

When packing for a safari, it’s super important to prioritize comfort. The African sun can be intense, and the dust can be a lot to handle. Go for lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and dry. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, as you’ll want to be able to move easily in your clothes (and lounge in your safari vehicle). On some days, we spent 12 hours bouncing around on safari, so I was incredibly grateful for my comfy attire!

4. Footwear for Safari

While you may be spending most of your time in a vehicle during game drives, you’ll still need a sturdy and comfortable pair of shoes for walking around camp, any guided walks, and bathroom breaks during game drives. Trail runners are a great choice for safari because they offer excellent support, traction, and durability. The uneven ground, animal poo, and prickly bushes can make walking a challenge, so it’s important to have shoes that can handle the terrain. Plus, trail runners are relatively lightweight, making them a comfortable choice for long days in the bush. We mostly stayed in the vehicle, but even for quick bathroom breaks, I definitely preferred sturdy closed-toed shoes.

5. Bring a Hat & Sunglasses

Sun protection is crucial on a safari, and a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential. Choose a hat with a wide brim that will protect your face and neck from the sun, and sunglasses with polarized lenses that will reduce glare and help you spot wildlife. When planning out what to wear on safari for women, both of these items are must-haves. Plus, how cute is this hat?

6. How to Look Cute on Safari

Who says you can’t look cute on safari? While comfort should be your top priority, there’s no reason you can’t add some style to your safari attire. Accessories are a great way to add some personality to your outfit. Bring a hair scarf or a pair of earrings to dress up a simple outfit in the evening.

For the daytime, try a scarf or a bandana . A scarf comes in handy keeping you warm on chilly mornings. Plus, bandanas are great for protecting your neck from the sun and keeping dirt out of your face during particularly dusty drives! Go for a lightweight and breathable fabric, and choose a neutral color or pattern that complements your outfits.

7. Consider Wearing a Sports Bra

Safari vehicles are incredibly bumpy, and the last thing you want is to be bouncing around in an unsupportive bra. Not only will a sports bra keep you comfortable on your off-road adventure, but it will also provide support during any walks or hikes you may take. Plus, if you’re in a hot climate, a sports bra made of moisture-wicking material can help keep you cool and dry. When considering what to wear on safari for women, this is an absolute must-have.

8. Dress in Layers

Temperatures can vary greatly throughout the day on a safari, so it’s important to dress in layers. Start with a lightweight base layer, such as a moisture-wicking tank top or t-shirt, and add a long-sleeved shirt on top. Bring a lightweight jacket or fleece for cooler mornings and evenings, and a hat and scarf for sun protection.

For me, it was much cooler than expected in the mornings, so I’d also recommend packing a beanie or something to keep your ears warm. Fortunately, this doesn’t take up much room in your luggage, and it keeps you nice and toasty!

what to wear on safari for women, Safari outfit for women olive green fleece, khaki pants, and sun hat

On the other hand, it can get pretty warm during the day. If you feel the heat, you may want to invest in zip-off pants or pack a spare pair of shorts in your bag. However, depending on how bad the bugs are and if you are getting out of the vehicle and doing any walking, you may want to keep those long pants on all the time despite the heat. I only wore shorts a few times – mostly around camp and for short drives during the day when I knew we would be staying in the vehicle.

9. Pack a Swimsuit

Many safari lodges have pools, so it’s a good idea to pack a swimsuit. You’ll be able to cool off after a hot day on safari and relax in the pool. This is an absolute must-pack on your list of what to wear on safari for women (if you have a pool). If you don’t have a pool, you can probably take a miss on the swimsuit because trust me…you do not want to jump in any watering holes on the Serengeti. You never know where a family of angry hippos may be lurking beneath the surface!

10. Prepare for Rain

Even if you’re traveling during the dry season, it’s always a good idea to bring a rain jacket on safari. Weather can be unpredictable, and a sudden rain shower can leave you feeling pretty soggy. Plus, a rain jacket can also double as a windbreaker on cooler mornings or evenings. On some of the super chilly mornings, I definitely doubled up with my fleece and rain jacket just to cut down on the wind.

Pick a lightweight and packable rain jacket, so you can easily stow it in your backpack during game drives. Our safari vehicle had rain jackets available, but I’d recommend bringing one just in case. I actually ended up using the rain jacket much more than expected…the Serengeti had a surprising amount of downpours in September! A rain jacket definitely ranks high on my list for what to wear on safari for women.

11. What to Wear in the Evening

This was one of my biggest questions…do people dress up in the evening on safari? Do I need to bring a different wardrobe? I’m here to answer all of your burning questions on safari eveningwear. The answer? You can wear the exact same thing that you do during the day – though you may want to switch it out for a clean version! Since there are pretty strict baggage allowance requirements on bush planes, this was definitely a relief for me to hear. Deciding what to wear on safari for women is already difficult enough before trying to plan out eveningwear!

twirling in an army green dress in Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp in Northern Tanzania - what to wear on safari for women for evening time to look cute

My recommendation? Throw on a clean outfit after safari that you can wear on your next day’s adventure. Switch up your footwear for sandals instead of hiking shoes. Bring one dress if you’d like to look pretty one evening, and bring a few accessories to mix it up. I brought a scarf, a pair of earrings, and a couple hair scarves to make myself feel a little more girly some of the evenings. The good news is – it is pretty chill and nobody is going to be judging what you’re wearing!

Safari outfit for women around camp in the evening for dinner: olive green pants, white shirt, cute scarf, sandals, and olive green fleece. what to wear on safari for women.

The one caveat I’d add is that if you are staying in a super high-end lodge, I’d check in and see if there are any requirements. The photo above is from a 5-star lodge, and you can clearly see that my version of “dressing for dinner” is pretty low-key.

12. What NOT to Wear on Safari

While jumpsuits may be on-trend and super cute, they’re not the best choice for a safari. Jumpsuits can be difficult to get in and out of quickly, which is a problem if you need to use the bathroom during a game drive. Imagine having to literally take off the majority of your clothing while standing behind a termite mound (the most common place to use the bathroom) on the Serengeti, and you’ll see why this is a very serious recommendation. Hard pass! Instead, opt for separates for maximum comfort and ease of movement.

Finally, remember that a safari is an adventure, so don’t be afraid to dress for the occasion. Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t be afraid to add a touch of style. After all, you never know what kind of epic photos you’ll be taking on your safari!

What to Wear On a Safari: Safari Outfit Ideas & Inspo

what to wear on safari

As I attempted to pack for my trip to Kenya a few years ago, I was STRESSED. WHAT TO WEAR ON SAFARI:

Most people will tell you to avoid navy blue or black clothing on safari, since dark colors attract tsetse flies (an insect native to tropical Africa.)

You’re better off with neutrals, like green, khaki, white, or light blue—especially because it gets hot. I’d recommend cute khaki trousers , lightweight lounge pants , breathable joggers , light sweats , or even leggings (but remember to avoid black.)

Also remember you’ll be sitting in whatever you wear for hours on end, so make sure you’re comfortable in whatever you choose.

One thing I read over and over again was the importance of layering. And it’s true: in the mornings and after sun down, the temperatures get fairly chilly, and you’ll want to be bundled up—but during the day, it gets oppressively hot.

The best advice I can give you is to start with a base layer (like a t-shirt or tank top ), then add a second layer (like a button-up shirt or light sweater), and finally, top it with a jacket or puffer vest + scarf.

This will depend on the type of safari you’re doing, but in my experience, hard core hiking boots (which I initially thought I needed) would have been totally unnecessary.

For the most part, you’ll be spending your game drives inside the vehicle and doing very little walking, so my advice is to wear whatever you’re most comfortable in.

Boots or high-top sneakers are great because they’ll cover your ankles, but I honestly saw one girl wearing sandals—and she was fine. (I wouldn’t wear sandals because of all the dirt/dust/insects, but you get the point.)

DUFFEL BAGS

Most safaris have strict weight restrictions on baggage because of the size of the plane you take into the desert. (More deets on that in my Safari 101 masterpost !) These duffels all fit way more than you’d expect and will meet the requirements.

WHAT TO WEAR AT NIGHT DURING SAFARI

This was one of the things I was most confused about. Do people dress up for dinner? Is it cold? What aesthetic should I be going for?

The answer: pretty much anything goes. Sanctuary Olonana , where I stayed, is considered on the “fancier” end, but there definitely wasn’t a dress code.

Some nights I wore a casual dress with a scarf, other nights I wore jeans and a blouse, and one night we decided to go straight to dinner from a drive, which meant I showed up in my safari clothes.

I wouldn’t buy anything special to wear at night—just work with what you have.

ACCESSORIES

what to wear on safari outfit

Temperatures tend to fluctuate dramatically on safari, so layers—and scarves—are key.

Plus, if you find yourself engulfed in a dust storm, you’ll be grateful to have something to cover your face. I’d recommend something warm for the morning, and a lighter alternative during the day and at night.

I wore a heavier blanket scarf (similar to the below) over my shoulders in the mornings and late at night, and a lighter silk scarf by Cuyana wrapped around my neck during the day.

This bandana scarf is IDEAL for safari — plus it’s under $40 and is a light color.

These deet wipes were a godsent. Super easy to toss into your bag, and unlike a large can of insect repellent, they barely took up any room.

Bonus: they come in a resealable packet. These are the exact ones I bought, and I only got bit once.

I wouldn’t have survived without this genius brush-on sunscreen , which I kept in my bag during game-drives and re-applied constantly.

Because most of your time is spent driving through dust and dirt, the idea of putting liquid sunscreen on felt kind of gross to me. This little brush was the perfection solution.

I’m a huge fan of Ray Ban aviators, but more recently I bought these $15 dupes on Amazon and I’ve been LIVING in them. If you’re the kind of person who constantly misplaces your sunglasses – I would highly, highly recommend.

MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

After a few days of being in the desert, my hair literally felt like straw. Luckily I’m a PSYCHO and anticipated that the arid climate would require a super hydrating shampoo and conditioner, so I packed the travel-sized version of this super moisturizing Briogeo shampoo and conditioner.

simple safari outfit for ladies

My husband and I both wore our hats every single day. Having the sun beat down on you for hours can be a killer, plus, you KNOW how I feel about wrinkles. Don’t be a dummy. Bring a hat.

This one from Madewell is PERFECT. Had I seen it before my trip, it’s definitely what I would have bought.

PACKING CUBES

best packing cubes for long trips

Set of 7 packing cube s, $21

Space is often limited on the small charter flights to the Masai Mara and other Kenya safari destinations, which means that every inch counts.

Packing cubes were a game changer for me. They not only keep your belongings neatly organized, but they also compress items to help maximize space. (Another one of my top space-saving travel hacks ? Use contact lens cases to store liquids like foundation and moisturizer. It frees up SO much room in your toiletry bag .)

Calpak and Stoney Clover both make great ones, or you can find them on places like Amazon (the ones I linked here are perfect and reasonably priced .)

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU ON GAME DRIVES

  • Blanket scarf
  • Hairbrush (the wind really does a number on your hair & you obviously want to look FRESH for pics)
  • Lipbalm/Chapstick
  • External battery & charging cord
  • Bottle of water
  • Powder sunscreen (to reapply during the day)
  • Fanny pack (perfect for storing your must-haves)
  • Jacket (for early in the morning and after the sun went down)
  • Hand sanitizer or wet wipes

What to Wear on Safari • Ultimate Safari Outfit Packing List

Woman smiling and walking toward the camera while walking through the Serengeti on safari

You’ve booked your dream trip; an African safari. And now, the slight panic sets in because… what do you wear on safari? You’ve seen in documentaries people in head to toe tan, with dirt-covered boots and mosquito nets, but is actually what the ideal safari outfit looks like? I’m going to help you put together multiple safari outfit ideas so that you are dressed in a safe, functional, and maybe even cute way for this safari trip! So settle in and let’s look at some Africa safari outfits.

I specifically went to Tanzania for my 7-day safari, but these rules for a recommended safari outfit are pretty applicable to almost any safari in Africa (aside from gorilla trekking).

Use my affiliate code AMANDAWANDERS to save $100 on any safari with Shiri Adventures

Rules for what to wear on safari.

And before we get started,  I may receive commission  if you make a purchase from some of the links in this list. However I promise I would never recommend something to you that I didn’t personally love. So these items are all vetted through yours truly and are 100% perfect for a safari outfit.

Colors Matter in Safari Outfits

The first time I typed “what to wear on Safari” in Google was because I wanted to know what colors and patterns I could get away with on my first safari. Turns out, not many! You see mostly earth tones from guides and naturalists because that’s what you need to wear to not stick out to the wildlife.

Here are some no go safari outfit colors:

  • Don’t wear black or dark blue because these colors attract tsetse flies
  • Don’t wear white, it doesn’t blend with any terrain
  • Avoid loud colors and patterns for the same reason as white
  • Avoid camouflage, this is reserved for military only

What colors are good to wear on safari?

  • Light earth tones; tans, browns, forest greens, and colors in that same vein
  • Either solid print or very minimal patterns aregoing to be ideal for your safari outfit

Dress in Light Fabrics and Layers

The mornings and evenings can be cool with warmer to hot afternoons, so you’ll definitely want to pack safari outfits that can be layered. It’s easiest to layer light fabrics, and you’ll definitely want things that are breathable so you don’t overheat. A safari outfit made of sweat-tastic fabrics is no good!

What fabrics to wear on safari?

  • Anything lightweight and breathable

You’re going to be traveling between lodges or camps almost every day on your African safari, and you’re not going to want to be packing up a ton of clothes every time. So, I HIGHLY recommend you pack 2 or 3 outfits that you can mix and match items between.

I also packed using my Peak Design backpack and the Away Bigger Carry-On luggage, and these were easy to move with every day.

Keep Your Safari Outfits Simple

I know we’re all sort of convinced from movies we need these extravagant safari outfits, but I promise simple is better here. Form and function over fashion for sure; you’re going to be getting in and out of vehicles, standing up and down all day every day for however many days you’re on safari. But the best thing about some of my outfit recommendations below is that they’re still cute!

Wear Long Sleeves and Pants

You’re going to want to protect yourself from the sun, the dirt/dust, and the elements, so I highly recommend wearing pants and for one of the layers of your safari outfit to be a long sleeve shirt of some sort. Not every layer needs to be long sleeves, but at least one.

Comfortable Shoes

If you’re not doing any sort of hiking or trekking on safari, your shoes won’t really matter as much. Our safari consisted of game drives for the most part, so I really just recommend something comfortable and neutral in color. This can be hiking boots or a sneaker; whichever would work.

But you will want something that isn’t going to get ruined by a little mud. Depending on what time of year you go on safari you may be walking in a little bit of mud at your hotel/camp site, lunch spot, or any other stops you make along the way.

Bring a Raincoat

Again, because of the weather I highly recommend a raincoat for your safari outfit. Because not only is it a light jacket that acts as a great outer layer should you need it, it’s also great in case you’re going on safari during the shoulder or rainier seasons.

Safari Outfit Ideas

Looking for outfit ideas and inspiration for what to wear on safari? I’ve got you. Here are the outfits I wore during my safari:

Safari Outfit Idea 1 • Wayre

Woman on safari looking out to zebras walking in the distance

Wayre is a brand that sells sustainable and ethically-made travel clothing, and I found these outfits to be perfect for safari. They’re lightweight, they had great neutral colors, and they’re stink-proof!

Recommended products:

  • Wayre Cruiser Pant
  • Wayre Button Up Crop

What to Wear On Safari Inspo 2 • Wayre

Another outfit from Wayre ; this brand is a perfect solution for what to wear on safari.

African Safari Outfit Idea 3 • Patagonia

Woman walking in Serengeti National Park on safari

This romper/jumpsuit was amazing. It was SUPER lightweight and very cute. I loved it as a cuter safari outfit, but as always remember that when wearing a jumpsuit you basically have to completely disrobe to use the restroom. I didn’t find it much trouble, but important to keep in mind!

  • Patagonia button up shirt
  • Patagonia jumpsuit/romper

Safari Outfit Inspiration 4 • Patagonia + Amazon

Woman standing on a rock looking out to the Serengeti

This button up shirt was an absolute must and I wore it multiple times in multiple ways. I loved it. And I also paired it with these Amazon pants in addition to the previously mentioned jumpsuit.

  • Patagonia shirt
  • Amazon crop
  • Amazon pants

What to Wear On Safari • Shoe Ideas

Like I mentioned before, I would just go with comfort and color preference here. Find something earth toned that’s comfortable to wear. If you’re in the jeep all day for your safari, this won’t matter as much, but I would definitely steer clear of black and dark blue for the tsetse flies I mentioned before. And if you go with white, pick a shoe that is easy to clean mud and dirt off of.

  • Baabuk Sky Wooler in Oatmeal – these are the sneakers I wore
  • My all-time favorite hiking boots – Timberland Chocorua Trail Boot
  • My all-time favorite white sneaker (and they’re leather so you can clean them) – Adidas Stan Smiths

So there you go, all the rules I learned around what to wear on safari. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out . To learn more about my safari, definitely follow me on socials, because I’ve got TikTok playlists and Instagram highlights saved! I hope you have the absolute time of your life on safari, I know I did!

Table of Contents

What Do You Wear On A Safari?

Safaris are generally pretty warm and dusty, and an easy way to get the best experience is to lay low and not draw a ton of attention to yourself through patterns and colors.

Loose fitting and neutral colored is the name of the game on a safari, to keep you cool and keep from attracting the wildlife… Wild cats and Tsetse flies alike! We don’t want any of them coming after us.

The cargo trend is still going strong, so check out these safari outfit ideas to give you some inspiration while you go shopping for your adventure.

Thinking of rocking a safari friendly jumpsuit? Here are some types to style jumpsuit outfits.

What Shoes To Wear

This might be a no-brainer, but it’s nice to know what’s recommended while you’re packing.

Even if you’re in an off road vehicle on your excursion, there will likely be plenty of walking too. So plan for it by wearing some sturdy sneakers or light hiking boots.

These won’t be too hard to toss in your suitcase, but you want to make sure you’re okay with these getting dusty! It’s not too clean out there, (it is the wilderness after all!) so don’t wear any sneakers that will get permanently dirtied up by the environment unless you’re okay with it.

You also want to make sure they’re actually good walking shoes. While sneakers are so trendy for any outfit, not all of them are actually functional. So it’s time to test out your faves and make sure they’re ready to walk in.

Safari Outfit Ideas – What Not To Wear

Every location and safari company has different do’s and don’ts about what not to wear, but likely, there are some staples you just simply don’t want to wear that apply to any and all excursions.

First, let’s discuss the colors you want to avoid on your safari adventure. You’ll want to avoid both ends of the light and dark spectrum. White will get dirty in the dusty air, so I would steer clear of any white and creams! Sure, it will wash out, but it will show while you’re out on your excursion. If you want to hide any dust you collect while out and about, go ahead and lean towards some darker colors. But! Not too dark!

Black and navy are said to attract certain bugs and flies that you don’t want to see while out in the wilderness, so maybe go ahead and ditch your darkest items!

Jeans, flannels, and animal prints will cause issues for you on a safari as well.

Animal print is banned by many safaris, simply because you don’t know how animals will respond to you wearing the same coat as their prey! It’s generally just not a great idea so save your leopard print for another day!

Jeans and flannels simply attract Tsetse flies and you don’t want that… So go ahead and plan for leggings instead of jeans and a solid colored layer if you need something for cooler weather.

Something else to note about African countries as a whole: camouflage is usually reserved for strictly military wear. In the US it’s a cool and trendy piece and pattern to wear on the streets as well as while out in the wild, but it’s not so accepted abroad. Make sure you know what the culture is around this print before you break it out, or better yet just rule it out of your outfits over all.

Safari Outfits For Women

Alright ladies, here are some of the best safari outfit ideas for you. These are all pretty trendy pieces, so if you’re looking for a good social media picture while you’re out there too, you’ll be ready.

Cargo, lightweight fabrics, and neutral colors are the move, so that’s a lot of what you’re going to see in these outfit ideas. Pair them with your favorite sneakers or hiking boots (that pass the walking test!) and you’re good to go.

  • Linen And Khaki
  • Cargo Jumpsuit
  • Brown Leggings

There are so many cute trends circulating that fit the safari vibe, so you’ll find something that’s a combination of on theme and on trend and look cool doing it. What to Wear on Safari in Africa? 8 Tips for the Best Safari Outfit

Searching for practical tips about what to wear on safari in Africa for a safari outfit that is both fashionable and functional? Embarking on a safari adventure promises thrilling encounters with wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. As you plan for this unforgettable journey into the African wilderness, one crucial aspect to consider is your attire. Your safari outfit should strike a balance between comfort, functionality, and style, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wild wonders of the safari world while remaining practical for the natural environment you'll be exploring. In this comprehensive safari clothing guide you will learn more about the safari dress code and clothing essentials.

Game Drive in Africa with private guide and landcruser

So what is a good safari outfit? A good outfit for safari helps you deal with Africa's environmental conditions like heat, moisture, dust, and insects. It’s important that they offer sun and anti-insect protection, dry quickly, and don’t wrinkle fast. There is a safari clothing rule of thumb that says: ‘Dress in layers for all activities & wear shades of the African bush’.

Your clothing choices and safari wardrobe can greatly impact your comfort and overall enjoyment during your safari. Here are 8 essential safari clothing tips for crafting your perfect neutral safari outfits :

1. Neutral Earth Colors for your Safari Outfit

4X4 photography vehicle for safari in Africa

Neutral-colored tones like khaki, beige, brown, and olive green work best to help you blend in with the natural surroundings of the African wilderness and are less likely to attract insects. Another tip to keep insects away on safari : avoid applying strong smelling perfume. Instead, use essential oils with citronella or lavender to repel insects like mosquitoes. Wearing a safari outfit in earth tones also demonstrates respect for the natural environment and its wildlife. It aligns with the principles of responsible and ethical wildlife viewing.

Dark clothes for safari like black and blue attract heat, biting tsetse flies, and other insects, so these colors are better not to wear on safari. Also, avoid bright colors and neon colors that may startle or attract animals; especially when you go on a walking safari . Although white colors often look nice and stylish on the safari photos across the web, I wouldn't recommend wearing white clothes on safari drives as the  roads can be extremely dusty, especially if you're allowed to go off-road in for example the conservancies around the Maasai Mara .

In summary, what colors to wear on safari and what not to wear on safari :

  • DO wear on safari: Khaki, brown, sand, beige and green hues are the best colors to wear on safari
  • DON'T wear on safari: bright colors, pale and neon hues, black and blue colors, busy patterns and military camouflage clothing (in African countries, camouflage attire is only worn by the rangers and military).

2. Wear Layers on Safari for Protection from the Cold

Reasons to visit Limpopo South Africa

Layer Up! On safari in Africa, weather in certain seasons can change quickly and temperatures can vary significantly, especially during early morning and late afternoon game drives . In the mornings, it can be cold and windy, while in the afternoon it can still be very hot. Sometimes, Mother Nature may surprise you with a heavy rain shower; all part of your Africa safari adventure. That's why it's a good idea to wear layers when you go on a game drive or a walking safari. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing accordingly and stay comfortable in changing weather conditions.

Now, what does wearing layers mean? In the morning, when you start your game drive before sunrise, it can be chilly. So start by wearing for example a lightweight khaki short-sleeve shirt, then a beige long-sleeved blouse, and an olive-green warm fleece jacket to keep you warm in the mornings and on exciting night drives to spot nocturnal animals. When it gets hotter during the day, you can take some layers off. Simple as that. For rainy days, it's handy to have a rainproof jacket, for example a soft shell or poncho that you can easily put in your daypack.

3. Wear Breathable Fabrics on Safari

Safari destinations often have warm climates, so prioritize lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to stay cool and comfortable throughout the day.

You can wear lightweight pants, shorts or long outdoor pants that can change into shorts (zip-offs). Choose long-sleeve neutral colored blouses made of light fabric. These best clothes for safari not only keep you cool but also protect you from bugs and the sun. If it gets hotter during the day, you can roll up your sleeves or change your convertible pants into shorts.

4. Consider Safari Clothes that offer Protection

Tracks and Signs with EcoTraining instructor Sean

Safaris means exposure to the sun, insects, and potentially (lots of) dust. Long-sleeve shirts and pants will protect yourself from the sun an other elements like dust, wind, rain, and insects. Opt for outdoor clothing with built-in UV protection or safari clothing with  insect-repellent  for added defense and to minimize pesky insect bites.

Also, don't forget to bring a hat and a scarf. A wide-brimmed safari hat and safari sunglasses protect your face from the sun, and a scarf keeps you warm when it's chilly or it can protect you from rain or dust. This safari clothing with sun protection and protection against other natural elements will help you have a better time on your safari.

other safari gear to bring along on safari game drives or walking safaris is rain gear. Even during dry seasons, unexpected rain showers can happen. Packing a lightweight, foldable raincoat or poncho can keep you dry and comfortable. So, be prepared for all kinds of conditions on your safari adventure.

5. Pack Lightweight and Versatile Safari Clothing

Field Guide Training and Wildlife Courses

On safari, it’s smart to pack efficiently because you often travel around. Minimize your luggage by selecting versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Pack items that can easily be washed and dried overnight.

If you choose lightweight clothes, you can travel with a lighter bag. This is especially important when you travel around with charter flights , as most small planes used for moving between safari destinations have rules about how heavy your bags can be (often max. 10kg). Many African lodges offer laundry services, so you don't need to pack too much.

One clever trick is to bring safari clothing for hot weather and safari clothing for cold weather that can be mixed and matched and used as layers. Earth tones, like khaki and green, are not only great for blending in with the surroundings, but they also make it easier to put together your safari outfit.

Maasai Community in Enonkishu Conservancy

Moreover, leave valuable jewelry at home. Minimal jewelry is the way to go. It does not only enhance your comfort but also ensures your safety. Instead, by some colorful beadwork from the ladies that make beautifully handmade jewelry, like bracelets.

6. Wear Comfortable Footwear on Safari

Veldskoen Shoes Safari Footwear

Make sure to bring along a comfortable pair of shoes to complete your safari outfit. Opt for sturdy, closed-toe shoes, boots, or vellies with good traction. You'll likely be walking on uneven terrain, so prioritize comfort and support to avoid discomfort and potential injuries.

The type of closed shoes you need depends on the type of safari and activities on your safari trip. For example, if you go on walking safaris, or if your safari involves gorilla trekking through muddy forests or hiking dusty terrain, it’s advisable to bring high-quality safari boots or hiking shoes with good grip worn with hiking socks and impenetrable soles, which can be useful to protect you from sharp objects like snares or thorns and from reptiles like snakes.

Some even wear gaiters for better protection from snake bites or ants. Depending on the terrain, I wear short olive-colored gaiters when encountering wildlife on foot in East Africa. For Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda , I wear higher gaiters as you trek through dense vegetation than can be thorny and slippery with biting ants along the way.

If you're mainly going on a game drive in a vehicle, basic stable shoes, like lightweight trail shoes, are fine. If you're in an area with lots of bity insects and reptiles, it's wise to consider higher-rise hiking boots for added protection on safari. I prefer closed shoes on walks because of the insects and thorns but I'm also someone who loves to wear slippers on game drives. If you decide to wear sandals or slippers, please make sure to apply sunscreen on your feet.

One of my preferred safari shoes choices is the authentic South African Veldskoen boot. These shoes are handcrafted, comfortable, durable, and have a stylish touch. Many local field guides in Africa wear these boots too.

7. Respect Cultural Sensitivities

Get to know the Maasai in Enonkishu Conservancy

Respect local customs and traditions by dressing modestly , particularly if you'll be visiting communities or cultural sites during your safari. In (rural) communities, revealing clothing, such as short shorts or low-cut tops, can be considered disrespectful or offensive. If your safari includes visits to local communities , opting for clothing that covers your shoulders, arms, and knees is advisable.

If you have the opportunity to participate in local festivals or ceremonies, wearing clothing that aligns with the traditional attire of the community can be a sign of respect and can enhance your cultural experience.

8. Check the Camp or Lodge Dress Code

Safari clothing for evening dinners in the African bush

Most safari lodges and camps have a casual safari-style dress code . In that case, formal (evening) wear is not necessary to pack. If you prefer, you can change your safari outfit for formal evening wear, but in reality, most people go straight to dinner after arriving from the evening game drive.

On my first African safari , I used to go back to my room to take a shower and change my safari clothes . But I quickly learned that most people prefer to stay by the fire after the game drive while sipping on a glass of wine or cold beer as an after sundowner . From gazing into the fire and talking about your sightings with other guests, you go straight to dinner. Most safari days don't end extremely late as you have early morning game drives.

Some lodges or camps may have specific dress codes for certain activities or dining areas, so it is advisable to check the clothing guidelines of your lodge or camp in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about what to wear on Safari

Can i wear shorts on safari.

What to pack for safari in Africa?

While shorts can be comfortable, long trousers are recommended for better protection against insects, thorny vegetation, and the sun, especially on safari walks.

Should I Wear Camouflage Clothing?

It's best to avoid wearing camouflage clothing as safari attire, as it's often associated with military or hunting activities, which may not be appropriate in wildlife conservation areas.

Are Hats Necessary on Safari?

Safari Guide Training Kenya

Yes, sunhats are essential for sun protection. Since most African safari destinations are located around the Equator, the sun is fierce! I therefore recommend wide-brimmed styles to shield your face and neck from the sun's rays. Additionally, I always recommend applying sunblock between 30 and 50 spf.

What is a stylish Safari Hat?

Rogue Hats are a popular choice to wear on safari. These safari hats are not only stylish, but also practical for protecting yourself from the African sun. They are known for their quality and durability. Many safari-goers appreciate the wide brims of Rogue Hats, which offer excellent shade and sun protection. If you're looking for a blend of fashion and function during your safari, Rogue Hats are a fantastic option to consider.

What are the Best Safari Clothing Brands for Women?

photography safari Maasai Mara Kenya

For women, it can be tough to find a stylish women's safari outfit as most affordable safari clothing is designed with men in mind (sold as unisex). The best safari clothing for women is also very subjective, but I love to wear for example the "Tayla Jane Range" of RuggedWear, designed by and for women. RuggedWear is among the most popular safari clothing brands, especially in South Africa . Another brand I love is Fjällräven. This is not a safari clothing brand and doesn't fall under the category cheap safari outfits, but a great outdoor clothing brand with sustainability in mind.

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park Mangroves walk

One of my favorite safari essentials is a lightweight green jacket made of thermal and water-repellant material. It's from the luxury Italian clothing brand Colmar. The side pockets and a practical adjustment drawstring make the jacket feminine and functional for safari.

Safari Outfit Ideas to Pack When You Finally Take That Dream Trip

Packing for a safari is a science: You need to be prepared for changing temperatures, high sun, and plenty of dust, as well as cocktail hour and a dip in the pool—and all of your safari outfits, plus toiletries and gear, have to fit in a soft-sided duffel with a strict weight limit. We polled our resident experts and trusted specialists for safari outfit ideas, whether you're staying in a luxe tented camp on the Okavango Delta in Botwsana or traversing the Sabi Sands game reserve in South Africa . Note that most safari outfitters will provide travelers with an itemized packing list, so check with yours about specifics (as well as any vaccines or medications you might need) before you go.

Getting there

Most safari camps are only accessible by small propeller planes, which don’t allow hard-sided luggage. Pack everything in soft duffels that can be easily tossed into the back of the plane or the back of a Land Rover (weight limits are strict, too, so make sure you check with the outfitter before you go). Our advice: bring along some low-tech entertainment and have your camera handy for the views. Go Pro's Hero 9 has built-in tech to help keep any footage you shoot looking steady, making it perfect for bumpy rides.

On a game drive

Specialists disagree on the details, but you’re generally advised to avoid red and white clothing (as well as anything Day-Glo) while on game drives because it can attract insects or make you more visible to certain animals. Instead, go for clothing in shades of khaki, brown, and olive, which help you to blend in with the environment and hide dust and dirt, and pair it with some sneakers with a decent tread (on most safaris, you don’t need serious hiking boots). You’ll also want to pack plenty of layers since it can be chilly in the early morning, and blazing hot a few hours later. Don't forget a hat to help keep your skin protected under the harsh midday sun.

Around camp

You’ll want casual, cozy clothes to wear while you’re lounging around camp in between your daily excursions. A durable sandal with some grip will work just fine, and don’t forget a bathing suit —many lodges or tented camps have gorgeous pools.

Safari chic dinner

Some travelers like to have a more dressed-up option for cocktail hour and dinner back at camp—think flowy, breezy dresses, flats that can withstand a little dust, and a warm scarf to wrap yourself up in. Jumpsuits are a great option since it eliminates having to pack both tops and bottoms for evenings. In terms of accessories, leave any really blingy jewelry at home and opt for a more simple, pared down look.

  • Best Safari Clothes for Women: Outfit Examples + Where to Buy

by Nichole | Last updated May 7, 2024 | Safari Packing List , South Africa

Images of khaki pants and an Australian outback hat immediately come to mind when I think of the safari outfit. As a first-time safari-goer, I had no idea what to wear. Now that I have done two safari experiences, one at Lion Sands in South Africa and one at Chobe National Park in Botswana , I can now share my travel pearls of what are the best safari clothes for women.

OPTION A : Ahh, too much khaki! Please tell me there are other options.

OPTION B : Gorgeous, but are you seriously going to wear this sitting in a jeep in the heat with dust and bugs flying around you?

When I first started my search for the ideal safari clothes for women, I thought there has to be more choices than options A and B as seen from the photos above.

I despise khaki (and I’m fair-skinned which does not mix well with skin-toned colors), and I crave feminine, well-fitted, PRACTICAL clothes (that do not look like you are only wearing them for a dramatic Instagram shot).

Is there an option C?

But it took me a lot of purchases and returns later to find the best safari clothes for women. I hope my trial-and-error clothing discoveries can help you as you pack for one of the most epic experiences of your life … the African safari!

By the way, if you are still trying to figure out what to pack, don’t miss my ultimate safari packing list below (#23 will surprise you!).

There are three features you want to look for when selecting a safari shirt:

→   Lightweight

→   Breathable fabrics

→   UPF 40+ rating

All these features are discussed more in detail at the end of this blog post. Click here if you want to read more about these features and tips first.

You do not have to stick to beige and browns for your safari drive that look like the color of your skin. Instead, I opted for colors such as light blue, grey, olive green, white, rust, and soft pink.

Here are my top recommendations on the best safari shirts for women that are stylish and feminine but also practical.

Orvis Open Air Caster Shirt in White

WHY I LOVE THE ORVIS OPEN AIR CASTER SHIRT :

  • Lightweight
  • UPF 40 rated
  • Built-in Odor Control
  • Roll-tab sleeves
  • White is a versatile color that will pair with any pants

Orvis Chambray Shirt in Alpine Lake

WHY I LOVE THE ORVIS CHAMBRAY SHIRT :

  • Dries quickly
  • Super breathable
  • Wrinkle resistant

Kuhl Arriva Shirt in Olive

WHY I LOVE THE KUHL ARRIVA SHIRT :

  • Ultra lightweight

Quick drying

  • UPF 50 rated

Moisture wicking

I admit it.

I overpack and like to plan for all possible outfits I may need. If you are taking a small plane to your safari destination, you will likely have a weight limit for your luggage.

That means you have to make smart choices of what clothing to bring.

Pants take up a fair amount of space in your luggage, so it’s very important to pick pants that are LIGHTWEIGHT and versatile.

Let’s go through some of my favorite picks to make your trip enjoyable and comfortable.

Prana Halle Pant in Sedona Fields

WHY I LOVE THE PRANA HALLE PANT :

  • Stretch performance with durable water-repellant (DWR) finish

UPF 50+ rated

  • Roll-up leg feature
  • Comes in a lot of great colors

Kate Skinny Cargo Pants in Army Green

WHY I LOVE THE ANATOMIE KATE CARGO PANTS :

Stretchy material

  • Quick-drying

Anatomie pants vs. Jeans

L.L. Bean Vista Camp Pants in Granite

WHY READERS LOVE L.L. BEAN VISTA CAMP PANTS :

  • Durable (made from rugged nylon)

* I haven’t tried these pants yet, but I had to include them because readers keep raving about how great these pants are for safari drives. I can’t wait to try them out on our next trip!

Kuhl Freeflex Roll-up Pants in E ucalyptus

WHY I LOVE THE KUHL FREEFLEX PANTS :

Roll-up pants

Water-resistant FREEFLEX

Women’s Safari Outfit Examples

My husband hates taking personal photos, so you’ll only see a few personal safari photos of us in this blog post.

Since I did not have photos of every single safari outfit I wore while in South Africa and Botswana, I took a few photos back home to demonstrate what I wore on our 4-day trip.

Safari Outfit Day 1

Safari Outfit Day 2

Safari Outfit Day 3

Safari Outfit Day 4

I strongly advise wearing pants on your safari drive because of the dust, sun, and bugs.

However, back at the safari lodge, you may want to slip into something clean and comfortable to walk around in.

Here are my recommended versatile performance shorts:

Prana Double Peak Short in Mud

WHY I LOVE THE PRANA DOUBLE PEAK SHORT :

Prana Elle Short in Rust

WHY I LOVE THE PRANA ELLE SHORT :

Comes in fun colors

4-way stretch

Lots of pockets

Wearing a safari hat and taking photos of elephants in Chobe National Park in Botswana

Bring a hat!

The African sun is strong and hot. If you want to avoid skin cancer and wrinkles, be sun smart. This saved my skin!

One other feature you may want to consider in a safari hat is a chin strap.

It was not very windy when we were in Sabi Sands in South Africa. I can imagine though if you are traveling by jeep on an open plain in Tanzania, there may be more wind that could steal your hat away.

Orvis Women’s Saddle Packable Felt Hat

WHY I LOVE THE ORVIS PACKABLE FELT HAT :

  • Super packable!
  • Water-repellant and stain-resistant
  • Adjustable interior band

J.Crew Packable Straw Hat

WHY I LOVE THE J.CREW PACKABLE STRAW HAT :

  • Super squishy and packable!

Depending on the time of year, you will need a light to medium jacket.

Remember, those mornings can be chilly!

Layer, layer, layer!

Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket

WHY I LOVE THE ANATOMIE KENYA SAFARI JACKET :

Super stylish and slim fit

Versatile- wear it on safari by day and city by night

Performance stretch

Wrinkle AND wind-resistant

Machine washable!

REI 650 Down Jacket in Saragasso Sea

WHY I LOVE THE REI 650 DOWN JACKET :

  • Water resistant
  • Great for layering up on a safari and for city exploring

Wearing my light down jacket on a safari drive

A lot of the blogs will suggest hiking boots. I strongly disagree IF you are only doing game drives.

If you are doing a walking safari, then please bring those heavier mid-rise hiking boots! You may be walking in tall grass, navigating around rocks, or accidentally stepping in lion poop. Sturdy boots are essential for protection and keeping those dainty ankles away from biting insects.

Otherwise, lightweight trail runners work perfectly. They provide a little grip just in case you jump out for a quick walk or to enjoy a sundowner.

Plus, remember those little planes taking you to your safari destination have weight limits. Pack light!

Saucony Peregrine Trail Runners

WHY I LOVE THE SAUCONY PEREGRINE TRAIL RUNNERS :

  • Lugs for good traction
  • Variety of fun colors to choose from

Rothy’s Slip On Sneakers in Sand

WHY I LOVE THE ROTHY’S SLIP ON SNEAKER :

  • Doubles as a great “transit” shoe for travel days on/off the airplane
  • Do not wear on a walking safari but perfectly fine if sitting in a jeep for 3 hours
  • Super comfotable
  • Machine washable

Blundstone Chelsea Boots in Cocoa Brown

WHY I LOVE THE BLUNDSTONE CHELSEA  BOOTS :

  • Cushioned midsoles
  • Leather uppers are weather-resistant
  • Vibram Megagrip outsoles
  • Immediately comfortable
  • Great for walking safaris

Swimming in Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls on the Zambia side

Athleta super soft sweatshirt

Remember the mornings and evenings in Africa can get chilly. Layers are so important!

My favorite is my Athleta sweatshirt due to its super soft material.

Anatomie Louisa Skinny Jean Pant in Black

I had brought a few dresses with me because prior to the safari portion of our trip, we had the opportunity to dine at some of the best restaurants in Cape Town including The Test Kitchen!

We had also visited numerous wineries in South Africa wine country , so I did end up bringing a few “dressier” items.

I love wearing dresses, but I found a safari lodge is really not the place people wear them. Everyone was super casual.

Of course, wear what you want, but I would have felt a little out of place wearing a dress.

If you do wear one, a long maxi dress probably makes the most sense to keep your legs protected from mosquitoes.

So instead I opted to wear my Anatomie Luisa Skinny Jean Pant in black with a flowy top and sandals.

Then I just alternated tops since black goes with everything. Remember, there are no tsetse flies in South Africa, but if you are in another country that has them, no black or dark blue!

Sorry, no photo from the safari trip, so I took a photo of the Anatomie pants I wore for dinners at the safari lodge when I got home.

Best Women’s Safari Accessories

Wearing a multi-colored scarf at Chalkley Treehouse at Lion Sands River Lodge

Morning safaris can be chilly depending on the time of the year you go. Layer up.

One way to do that is to bring a scarf. Not only does it provide warmth, but it also fends off the sun and dust.

I opted for a multi-colored scarf I could wear with multiple outfits. Orvis usually has some great colorful options.

Wearing my Ray Ban sunglasses in Chobe National Park in Botswana

They reduce eye strain and cut down the glare and help as you are staring into the distant bushes trying to make out if you just saw a leopard.

I did not care for all the khaki boxy clothing options I was discovering when I Googled where to buy safari clothing.

I found the best clothing for a safari is from travel, camping, hiking, and fishing stores. They sell clothing that is performance-performing, lightweight, and durable. My favorite stores include the following:

→    Anatomie

A lot of the safari lodges will offer laundry service. However, if you need to wash an article of clothing by hand, pick something lightweight that dries quickly.

By far, my Anatomie pants are the quickest-drying clothing I have ever encountered.

There have been a few occasions where I have had to wash them in the sink with a little soap, and they literally air-dry within a few hours.

Pretty impressive!

According to Anatomie’s website, they can be dried in under 8 minutes using a hairdryer (but I have not tried that yet).

Wearing breathable fabrics is so important especially when you are sitting in a jeep underneath the scorching African sun!

Cotton, rayon, and linen are very breathable but not moisture-wicking.

Nylon and polyester wick moisture, but the breathability depends on the weave.

Merino wool is not just for winter but is also used for summer clothing because it breathes well and wicks moisture. For me, it’s a little itchy even with the fine weaves, but I have super sensitive skin.

For shirts, specifically look for a vented back with mesh lining, which allows for breathability. Also, another great feature to look for is roll-up sleeve tabs.

To stay cool, some pants are convertible where you can zip off the pant legs or roll them up and snap them in place.

Most people know what an SPF number means for sunscreen, but they may not be familiar with UPF ratings for fabrics.

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF)   number shows how much UVA + UVB radiation a fabric permits to penetrate your skin.

Look for a UPF 50, which blocks 98% of the UV radiation.  Also, look for shirts where you can pop the collar up. Your neck will thank you.

For some reason, Americans always think (myself included!) to wear less when it is hot; whereas cultures in Asia and the Middle East tend to cover up in the heat.

I know it seems counterintuitive to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, but you will be glad you did when you are baking in the sun and fighting off mosquitos and tsetse flies.

Tsetse flies love black and dark blue, so do not wear those colors while on safari. Otherwise, you can get a nasty bite and possibly African sleeping sickness if the fly has been infected with a parasite.

I asked my safari guides about the tsetse fly while we were in South Africa, and they had no idea what I was talking about. I found out later that is because this fly is not present in South Africa!

If you are in Tanzania or any other country, do not wear dark blue or black clothing/shoes and keep those ankles covered.

South Africa though has NO tsetse flies, so it is okay to wear black and dark blue there. However, dark colors absorb heat, so you may feel hotter if you choose to wear them.

Never wear camouflage since that type of clothing is identified with the military.

Also, a lot of guides will say not to wear white because it will get dirty quickly.

This may be true in other countries when driving out on wide-open plains, but honestly, I wore a white shirt twice while in Sabi Sands in South Africa and had no problems with getting really dirty.

I would avoid white though on a walking safari because it does make you stand out.

When we went to Sabi Sands at the end of September, the weather was VERY cold for the morning safari (I was layered up) and hot for the afternoon safari (I was stripping down).

If you are like me whose body does not regulate temperature very well, you will be happy you have layers to account for all temperature situations.

You really do NOT have to wear khaki for your safari outfit  UNLESS you are doing a walking safari, and then by all means wear those browns/tans to blend in.

Most lodges offer laundry services. Take advantage, so then you can pack less. I’ll be honest, I am horrible about “packing light.”

That is one reason why I love Anatomie clothing! I can bring more because it weighs hardly anything.

Remember you need room for all of that lovely South African wine you are going to bring back! We toured multiple wineries in the Cape Winelands before we headed to Sabi Sand and stored them in wine sleeves in our luggage.

Wine or clothes? Wine always wins.

There you have it.

My top safari clothes for women.

Most articles I have read just provide another generic list. I hope my more detailed explanations of what I personally wore will make your safari experience more comfortable and memorable.

Planning a safari or overland tour through one of Africa’s incredible game parks? This is the best womens safari clothing for your trip. Read our complete guide to find out exactly what to wear on safari!

Women Safari Clothing

Table of contents.

An African safari is one of the most exciting trips you can take as a traveler. Roughing it in the wilderness surrounded by the Big 5 is truly a thrilling experience. There are several things to keep in mind when you choose safari clothing for this type of adventure.

How should I dress for an African safari?

The focus of your safari attire should be on comfortable safari clothing in neutral colors and light fabrics. If it’s not something you would feel comfortable wearing something on an overnight flight, it’s best to keep it out of your safari gear.

Safari clothes for Africa should be relaxed, so you can enjoy the experience to the fullest. The drive time on overland trips can vary anywhere from 6 to 12 hours each day. Making comfort key on those long-haul journeys — the distances in Africa are massive!

Expect your safari clothing to be covered in dust and keep in mind that you won’t have much time to do laundry. Your safari clothes should feature synthetic fabrics that are hard wearing, quick-dry, easy to wash, and won’t show dirt or dust.

What to Wear on Safari

When it comes to options for what to wear on an African safari, womens travel brands tend to feature technical fabrics focusing primarily on khaki and olive colors. But unless you’re planning to live in the bush or are taking a Gorilla trekking trip to the jungle, it’s likely that this type of clothing isn’t necessary.

The majority of Africa safari tours will see you viewing animals within the confines of a vehicle, whether a giant overland truck or 4×4 car. This means that the khaki safari shirt or safari pants that you purchased will tragically go to waste.

What is the Best Women Safari Clothing?

Whether you’re looking for what to wear on safari in Kenya or are camping in the Serengeti, you need the best of the best when it comes to your safari clothing. Our selections offer you a nice range of safari pants, tops, dresses, and even safari jackets. That way you can be confident and comfortable on your jaunt in Africa!

Best of all? You can avoid the head-to-toe khaki safari outfits that somehow became the must-have on an African safari. Here are some realistic clothing pieces you’ll love carting along with you:

Shop Sizes XS-3X: Eddie Bauer Resolution T-Shirt

Best Safari Shirts for Women

As you plan what safari clothes to pack, make sure to bring a variety of tops and include sleeveless tanks, short sleeve tees, and long sleeves that you can layer!

The best safari shirts for the day time and warm weather are sleeveless or short sleeved breathable, moisture wicking tees in neutral colors.

For really hot days or to layer underneath warm items if cold, add a couple of casual tees. These also will be beneficial for those long safari travel days (read more on this in the Pants section below).

Stay cool with these moisture wicking shirts !

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-4X: Smartwool Merino Short Sleeve

Merino wool tops are some of the best safari shirts because they are both practical and can be re-worn without washing. This is particularly important on longer safari trips when you won’t have access to laundry for extended periods of time.

However, If you plan to hand wash your merino wool tops you’ll have to wait until you spend two or more nights in one location to allow time for the clothes to dry. This is why either quick-dry or long-lasting items are the best as safari clothes.

While merino wool is more expensive, you can get away with bringing just a few tops and then re-wearing them every few days. This is key for packing light!

Merino wool Icebreaker tops like these have a higher price point but are excellent for safari trips because they’re practical and you can rewear them (for weeks) without washing.

Learn more about how to hand wash while traveling !

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-XL: Icebreaker Merino Women’s Siren Tank

If you are traveling in hot weather, you might prefer a sleeveless top like the Icebreaker Merino Women’s Siren Tank  one pictured above (perfect safari shirt). Like the short sleeve tops, the ideal fabrics are from performance brands with quick dry 100% cotton, merino wool, or synthetics.

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-XXL: Columbia Cades Cape Tank

If you’re looking for a sleeveless safari shirt that’s less body hugging, then one like the Columbia shown here is perfect.

A sleeveless top not only helps to keep you cool on your safari days, but it can also be dressed up when you’re visiting the city! Pair it with a cute skirt and you have an instant evening outfit. Double-duty top!

Plus, it also looks the part of an African safari shirt!

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-3X: Columbia Quick Dry Sun UV Protection Convertible Long Sleeve

For the sunny days you’ll want to bring one light but practical womens long sleeve safari shirt to protect you from the sun’s beating rays. This will be a piece you’ll want to re-wear, so we advise choosing a quick dry fabric so that when you wash it, it will dry relatively quickly!

The dark khaki convertible womens long sleeve safari shirt (pictured above) is not only quick dry, but it’s specifically designed for UV protection. Plus, with it being convertible you can make the sleeves longer and shorter based on your preference.

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Columbia Silver Ridge Lite Long Sleeve : Amazon | Columbia (Sizes XS-3X)

Can you wear grey on safari? Grey is a great color choice for safari clothes along with other medium to dark neutral colors like khaki. These colors are good choices due to the fact that your clothes are likely to collect a lot of dust, especially the ones you use for the outer layers, and the darker neutral colors are able of masking it.

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-XL: Unbound Merino Long Sleeve

When you’re planning what to wear on a safari, make sure to bring at least one warm long sleeve or thermal top . You should also include a long-sleeve blouse you can use to cover you from the winter sun and to wear in the cities.

Depending on the time of year you’re headed on your safari and the region in Africa that you’re going to, you might need to add a few extra long sleeve tops to your safari wardrobe to layer at night. It can get pretty cold!

Safari Packing Tip : You’ll want to keep your safari attire as light as possible. To keep your packing light, make sure to include six to eight safari shirts. Any more and you’ll be overpacking!

Best Safari Pants for Women

When you are actually on a safari, you are much more likely to be going inside of a vehicle — walking safaris aren’t the norm. Being inside a vehicle allows for the undisturbed observation of the wildlife in a natural setting. Perfect for safari adventurers!

Of course, it’s best not to assume. So if you aren’t sure that you’ll be in a vehicle, double-check with your tour operator (if you have one).

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XXS-XXL: Zella Live In High Waist Leggings

It might surprise (and excite you) to find out that some of the best pants for safari are leggings. Seriously! This is specifically the case when you are taking a driving safari tour, NOT if you are getting out of the vehicle and walking in the bush.

Leggings are the perfect safari pants choice for comfort. Avoid choosing thick fabrics that will take too long to dry if you are hand washing them.

Leggings are also great for travel days. If you’re looking for leggings to take on your safari, TFG readers voted for the best leggings for women , so you’re bound to find a pair you like! We also really love these leggings from Zella (which are also available in plus size ).

Leggings are the most comfortable, packabe safari pants. So they’re definitely a good choice to wear on safari. While you can easily wear a pair of black leggings when you’re inside the vehicle, you might want to consider a lighter color to wear outdoors by the campfire (you’ll thank us later).

Safari Packing Tip : Make sure to choose a legging color that you can easily re-wear in-between washes!

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-XL: Scuba Mid-Rise Pant

If leggings aren’t your thing, a good alternative is casual joggers. Lululemon — a much-loved brand by yogis and travelers alike — makes a great pair of chic joggers which are great safari pants. They also make some pretty nice leggings too!

The travel-friendly fabric in these safari pants makes them easy to clean and de-wrinkle. Plus, with four-way stretch and a drawstring waist, you can wear them comfortably on the longest of overland safari rides!

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes 2-24: Amazon | Columbia  |  Zappos

When you first think about what to wear on African safari, you might imagine an outfit consisting of a khaki button down shirt and convertible trousers. But generally speaking, convertible pants are not a necessary item to add to your safari attire (unless they make you comfortable and confident, that is).

We recommend a modern-yet-functional pair of travel pants like Saturday Trail Pants by Columbia . Not only are these safari pants versatile, but more importantly they’re comfortable! They also pack light, dry quickly and don’t stain easily — what more are you looking for in your safari pants?

As an added bonus, they have a stretchy pull-up waist band that’s sitting down for long periods of time. It’s also easy to remove for quick bathrooms stops on an overland trip.

Here are 16 best hiking pants for women that are lightweight and practical!

womens-safari-clothing

Shop prAna Halle Pant: Amazon | prAna

If you’re looking for both more traditional and budget-friendly safari pants, these prAna travel pants are for you! Both safari pants are ideal for walking safari tours or trips that will incorporate both extensive time outdoors and inside a vehicle.

If you are going to be trekking through the bushes, we highly recommend making technical womens safari clothing part of your wardrobe.

When you’re planning on what to wear on safari, make sure you always pack a pair of safari shorts! Safari shorts are casual and easy-to-wear on hot days.

You might also want to consider including a breezy long skirt or sarong. Both make it easier to “pop a squat” on the side of the road without baring it all to your tour mates!

Travel Tip : There aren’t usually bathrooms along the long roads, and stops are typically infrequent.

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes 26-40: Levi’s Classic Straight Jeans

Can you wear jeans on safari? Jeans are a must, especially if you’re traveling in the winter! Sometimes the best women’s safari clothing isn’t necessarily the most technical travel gear. Jeans are not only practical, but they’ll provide you with warmth disguise dirt, and also give you a bit of style if you make a top in a major city like Cape Town!

But make sure not to hand wash your jeans! They’ll take way too long to dry. Denim is practical because you can re-wear it constantly without washing it. Denim designers make them specifically for multiple uses, and it’s one of the main reasons that modern travelers pack jeans. Jeans are a must-have when it comes to what to wear on safari !

You’ll also want to have a comfortable pair of pants that you can wear around the campsite at night.

Safari Packing Tip : Make sure you’re packing light. You should need no more than 5 pairs of safari pants.

Best Safari Dresses

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Columbia Freezer III Dress: Amazon | Columbia (Sizes XS-3X)

A dress may sound like the exact opposite of safari clothing. But, it’s always good to have at least one dress that you can sport on the beach in Zanzibar or wear out to a nice dinner at Victoria Falls.

The best safari dress is a little black dress that you can dress up for restaurants or a fun night out in the city. This one by Columbia features wicking, cooling, and sun protection fabric. Plus it’s available in sizes up to 3XL.

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes S-3X: Riviera Sun Tie Dye Summer Dress

When it’s hot, a loose and lightweight safari dress is also ideal for those long overland trips. In fact, dresses are more practical than pants — especially when you need to stop on the side of the road for a quick bathroom break in the bush along with your fellow tour mates!

When it comes to picking the best safari dress, choose something both versatile and comfortable. When it comes to choosing what to wear on safari, you’ll want a dress that can be worn on the beach and doubled for dinner and night on the town!

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Sizes XS-3X: WEACZZYLoose Trapeze Dress

If you aren’t a person that’s comfortable in dresses, you simply don’t like them or you’re going to be traveling when it’s colder, a long tunic top that covers your backside cans also do the trick for those safari roadside bathroom stops.

Long tunic tops can be versatile just like a safari dress — you can wear it in the camp after a shower, on the beach over your bathing suit, loosely over a comfy pair of safari pants or tick it into your shorts for a cute but casual safari outfit!

womens-safari-clothing

Shop One Size: ToBeInStyle Strapless Dress

REALLY IMPORTANT TRAVEL TIP : WHEN PLANNING WHAT TO WEAR ON SAFARI, AVOID ROMPERS. ESPECIALLY ON AN OVERLAND TRIP FOR TRAVEL DAYS . YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO PULL OFF YOUR ENTIRE ROMPER TO USE THE BATHROOM ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. NOT COOL .

If you’re something that has the same comfy and lightweight feel as a romper, opt for a strapless sundress like the ToBeInSty Strapless (seen above). You can wear it as a safari dress during the day for those long safari travel days or layer it over your leggings if it gets cold outside.

A strapless dress can also be worn as a safari skirt. Simply pair it with a cute top and dress it up with some jewelry that you find at a local shop during your travels!

Remember to avoid choosing bright colors on a safari so you don’t draw attention away from the safari (or frighten away any animals!). But if you pack bright colors in your safari wardrobe, you can wear them on travel days when you’re not on a game drive.

If you’re looking for maximum versatility, one of these convertible travel dresses might be perfect for your safari attire!

Best Safari Clothing for Cold Weather

Contrary to what you might think, it does get cold in Africa. That means that layering your safari clothes is key to surviving those cold African days. We’ve previously written about how to layer for cold weather , we’d highly recommend you take a peek before you start packing!

Regional climates in Africa vary throughout the season, so be prepared to encounter both hot and cold temperature. Make sure you always check the weather forecast before you go so you’re dressed right!

If you happen to be traveling during the cold season, from May to August, you might want to consider packing a set of thermals for women  with your safari clothes so you can stay warm. You can wear them up to two weeks (or longer) without having to wash them!

Safari Packing Tip : For maximum warmth, pack one set of merino wool thermals. Especially if you’re camping in the winter!

Best Women’s Jacket for Safari

As you’re preparing your safari clothing checklist, make sure you pack a good jacket for safari. The roof and windows of some safari vehicles are open as you drive around the parks. With those open windows it can get quite chilly both at dawn and during night drives.

When you’re looking for the best jackets for safari, you should look for a good, quality jacket that can also serve as a windbreaker. You’re sure to feel a chill in the air with an open window first thing in the morning!

A travel fleece or rain jacket for safari are most needed when you’re doing an African overland trip that crosses various countries. When deciding what to wear on safari, make sure you don’t underestimate how cold it could get in Africa on your trip!

While it might be hot and sunny during the day, when the temperature drops at night you’ll be glad you packed a rain jacket and fleece in your safari clothes. TFG has a list of the best windproof jackets and fleece jackets for your travels.

When you’re packing your safari wardrobe, make sure you pack both a windproof jacket and a merino wool or fleece jacket for safari clothes.

Remember to choose neutral tones for your safari clothing. This is especially the case for items that are highly visible such as your jacket for safari.

Trust me on this one. If you’re head is hanging out of a vehicle at 5:30am, you’ll feel the crisp morning air and wish you had a warm jacket — it happened to me!

For a stylish jacket for safari option that you can wear as part of your safari outfit, the Style & Co Safari Jacket is both chic and practical. When it comes to choosing a jacket for safari that’s neutral, easy-to-clean and will hide the dust, go for the grey, khaki, or olive green color!

Best Safari Shoes

womens-safari-clothing

Shop Merrell Moab 3 Shoe: Amazon | Zappos

Now that you’re packed and ready with your safari clothing, it’s time to plan your safari shoes! This is probably going to be much easier than you think!

We recommend taking only two pairs of shoes. When it comes to picking those safari shoes, go with a pair of sneakers and flip flops (for camps, shower, and beaches). Your sneakers should be something comfortable you can wear on the truck, for occasional safari walks, and at the campsite at night if it’s cold.

However, if your safari itinerary includes walking safaris, you’ll need substantial sturdy safari shoes. For multi-day treks through the jungle, you’ll want to bring sturdy hiking boots . But for the occasional day trip, regular all-terrain sneakers or hiking shoes will work as safari shoes.

Ideally, you’ll want your safari shoes to be waterproof and easy to clean in case they get muddy or otherwise dirty.

womens-safari-clothing

FitFlop Iqushion Super-Ergonomic Flip-Flops

Flip-flops may seem like a random item to add to this safari packing list. But it’s nice to air out your toes if you’ve had them in sneakers all day. Flip-flops are also great safari shoes as they’re convenient to wear in camp showers. And don’t forget about the beach!

Not a big fan of flip-flops? Try one of these slip-on beach sandals as your second pair of safari shoes instead. Throw in a pair of cute ankle boots or stylish slip ons if you’re traveling in Cape Town .

But make sure not to add too many shoes to your safari wardrobe!

Best Safari Socks

womens-safari-clothing

Darn Tough Crew Socks

Whether you need to pair your socks with safari boots or sneakers, make sure they are moisture wicking socks ! This is particularly important so you can keep your sock numbers down.

I know we’ve mentioned merino wool a lot, but just as with the rest of our suggested safari clothing, merino wool socks are perfect to pair with your safari shoes because you can rewear them multiple times without having to wash them.

Kirkland Signature Trail Sock

Several TFG readers agreed that Kirkland’s merino wool socks are a great pick to add to your safari wardrobe. One reader says, “I wash them in cold water and hang them to air dry, but they have held up really well and keep my feet warm, too.”

If you’re camping, you can bring a pair of Kirkland socks (like the ones shown above) to keep your feet warm at night. If you choose dark colors or prints they won’t show the dust as easily.

Best Bras and Underwear for Safari

womens-safari-clothing

Panache Underwire Sports Bra

Last but not least for your safari travel checklist, make sure to pack a good sports bra for the bumpy journey! Vehicles in Kenya, and other countries, often cover all terrains including deeply rutted roads and huge potholes.

Make your ride more tolerable by wearing a sports bra whenever you are being transported. Also, take some motion sickness meds beforehand if you are prone to car sickness.

Also, quick dry travel underwear helps you easily do laundry without having to wait ages for it to dry!

Because you may be moving locations every night, you won’t have much time to wash your safari clothing, so it’s best if you bring fast drying fabrics or clothing you can re-wear easily.

Safari Travel Tip: Most of the time, you’ll be popping a squat on the side of the road, so a female urinary device or even a flowy skirt might be helpful if you’re not crazy about the idea of flashing your goods. Don’t forget your antibacterial hand wipes!

Other Safari Gear

womens-safari-clothing

UPF 50+ Sun Protection Quick Dry Baseball Cap

TFG has a great post on what to pack for African safari tours that we’d highly encourage you to check out so you know what other safari gear you’re going to need on your trip!

To go along with your safari clothing choices, you’ll need a few accessories.

Hats are great because they can help shield you from the sun and hide unwashed hair. But while hats are a definite must, but that doesn’t mean they have to be unattractive.

When it comes to your hair, you will want to keep it covered and pulled back in a ponytail or bun so it doesn’t get tangled in the wind and full of dirt from the road. We have a few suggestions for some hair accessories that will help keep high maintenance hair on the down low during your safari tour.

Compass Rose Secret Bra Wallet

Sunglasses are also a must-have, they offer shade and protection from the sun which is really important considering how close to the equator you’re going to be! A few other safari necessary accessories include a bathing suit and scarf.

Don’t be a target for unwanted attention. When you choose what to wear on safari, make sure you don’t dress too flashy or showy. Make sure you don’t bring any of your expensive jewelry and leave your designer handbags at home (or another safe place).

Finally, conceal the majority of your money and extra credit cards for extra safety. This bra wallet is a great way to do that!

We’ve got some great anti-theft tips for you so you can protect your valuables during your safari travels.

Which luggage should I choose for safari?

When it comes to choosing luggage for safari, check out the Osprey Fairview 55L . It’s kind of perfection.

I found it easier to lug a soft bag than a suitcase, as everyone’s gear gets piled up under the truck. I personally use it with the Compass Rose packing cubes to stay organized and fit in everything!

Don’t worry so much about the baggage weight. My bag never goes over 30 lbs using the guidelines suggested on the site. If you aim to pack light, you shouldn’t be overpacking!

pStyle Urinary Device

What should I pack for toiletries on safari?

When it comes to what you need to pack for toiletries on safari, there are a few things you’re definitely going to need.

You definitely will want to have a female urinary device , because the only bathroom breaks you get are in the bush. Finding adequate coverage can be a challenge, so you might also need to get comfortable with flashing your bum at other women on the trip!

You’ll want to bring a travel towel so that it can dry quickly when you’re constantly on the go. You should also pack any prescriptions you might need along with mosquito repellent … don’t forget that! And while it’s not exactly a toiletry, you’ll want a collapsible water bottle , too!

If you’re going to go the carry-on only route, make sure you cut back on your toiletries. It’ll help with TSA if you put all of your liquids in a Ziploc bag, following the 3-1-1 rule !

The Dos and Don’ts of Safari Clothing Packing

Packing for your African safari can seem overwhelming, so let’s finish off by going over our main dos and don’ts when it comes to getting together your safari gear and planning your safari attire!

What should you not wear on safari?

What you shouldn’t wear for an African safari depends highly on the actual trip type that you’re participating in. An overland trip that touches on a variety of countries is going to mean different must-haves from a short safari to Kruger Park that’s smack in the middle of a longer trip.

If your African safari trip is long, you’re going to want to focus on making comfortable, practical safari clothing a priority. But if you’re headed on a short three-day trip, you can definitely get by with wearing regular clothes.

But for both trips, we highly recommend that you DO NOT wear a romper on a safari — three days, seven days or otherwise. We know that we’ve mentioned this before, but it’s such an important note that we want to talk about it in a little more detail!

When you’re on an overland safari trip, it’s common place to simply pull over on the side of the road to go to the bathroom — in public — as there really aren’t bathrooms along the way. The reason why we stress that you shouldn’t wear rompers is due to the fact that going to bathroom in a romper means taking all of your clothes off to go to the bathroom.

While you might be able to find a somewhat “discreet” spot in the pushes to pop a squat, you’ll still be pulling off your entire romper in public and it’s much harder to attempt to conceal the top and bottom half of your body at the same time. It’s much easier to focus on covering your backside.

We know you’ll thank us for this advice later!

womens-safari-clothing

What colors should you wear on safari?

As exciting as it is to experience nature in its rawest form, you don’t have to immerse yourself to the extent that your safari clothing completely blends in with the foliage and desert itself. We can leave that for the Hollywood movies!

With that in mind, the best colors for safari clothes include:

  • Olive green

A tip for picking the best color for your safari clothing is to go with colors that are inspired by nature. Measure your clothes with the image above, if they’re in the same tone, intensity and relatively the same color they’re good to go. You’re looking to blend in, but you don’t have to look like Crocodile Dundee or wear full tactical gear!

What color should you not wear on safari?

If you’ve done your safari clothing due diligence, chances are you’ve come across something that tells you not to wear bright colors. It seems like a strange request, but it’s recommended that you choose neutral colors because you don’t want the animals to see you — if they do they might be scared off!

Stick to neutral colors but avoid white because your safari clothes are bound to get very dirty, especially if you’re camping, and white will show it all!

Can you wear black on safari?

Wearing black on safari is not recommended. Black clothing attracts mosquitoes, and you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible to keep your trip its most enjoyable!

If you do end up bringing some black pieces, keep them to a minimum and opt for lightweight fabrics wherever possible!

I’m going on a safari next week, and the packing list looks like it would be a lifesaver, but I’m getting an error that the page is unavailable when I click on it. Anything I’m missing? Thanks!!

Hi Amy, I am so sorry about this. Please can you email us at [email protected] so we can send it over to you.

Have a wonderful time on your Safari!

On August 2, 2022, Just got back from South Africa; Cape Town, Cape Winelands, then off to safari at Kruger; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; Botswana, Okavango Delta! It was a great 12-women trip, Women, Wine and Wild. I researched and looked at this site for everything from suitcases, carry-ons, cross-body bags, packing, lists of clothes, shoes, jackets, underpinnings, toiletries, hats, scarves, etc.; for varying types of travel, city, winelands, safaris, and Travel Fashion Girl came through on all fronts – I was ordering things left and right even in the last few days and got it all together and had the most wonderful trip. I may have taken a little too much, but I really used most everything I brought so it all worked out. But as they say, less is more; I wouldn’t bother even with a little heel for dinners out if it’s only a few night in a city. I wouldn’t take as many pants as those can be interchangeable pretty easily, especially if you bring a few blouses/tops. For chilly mornings or evenings, a lightweight puffer jacket was perfect. And scarves are perfect to help mix it all up and really be able to wear the same things with different scarves. TFG is an amazing place to go for everything travel; I love it!

Courtney S

Just got back from our 3 week honeymoon on safari in Kenya and Tanzania including a week in Zanzibar – these packing lists from TFG were so helpful for knowing what to expect and helping to minimize how much luggage to bring. Definitely recommend carry on backpack for this trip to fit in the small trunks of the land cruisers and for small airplanes (we took one with only 12 seats!)

Tracy

This recommended packing list was just what I needed for a 10-day safari in Tanzania.Thank you 🙏

Someone recommended we take soft travel bags to fit onto the small airplanes which I would NOT do again. Due to their weight, it made the grueling trek through airports a painful experience 😣 Instead, we would have preferred rolling, carry-on luggage. My two-cents, but unless you travel lightly, soft bags aren’t the way to go for this type of trip. Anyone else?

Thank you for sharing your own feedback with us Tracy, this is really helpful to know. Hope you had an incredible time!

It was an incredible time, thanks Alex! Would love to go again 😀

Keri

Loved this packing list! I only went on a two day safari but this was immensely helpful with helping me choose the right clothes to pack for a conference plus my safari outing.

Julia Carling

We’re just back from a Safari in Zimbabwe , Botswana and Zambia And I found previous posts on Safari clothing on this site invaluable! And def no all in ones ! We stopped for loo breaks whenever needed and took it in turns to go round to the back of the truck so it was totally private and discreet! I took very thin summer dresses for the middle of the days and was really glad of these . And we definitely needed warm things for early morning … I had a cashmere snood I was so thankful for … I could pull it up over the back of my head . Also silk gloves ! And it was the best holiday we have ever had !

Thank you so much Julia, so glad we were able to help you with your packing. And thank you for sharing your packing insights with us, these are all super helpful.

So pleased to hear you had such an amazing time!

Victoria

Just came back from a trip that included: Capetown; The Winelands; Vic Falls; Chobie game drive in Botswana; self drive through Kruger; and a luxury resort/safari game drive; — oh yeah and we had a two day stop over in Doha (!) So we had temps that ranged from 50-65 degrees in Capetown/Winelands; 55-85 in Kruger, and 98-112 degrees in Doha (!)

So one big thing to consider is that the weather is vastly different depending where you go: Capetown in July is Winter, which is chilly and drizzly, can be windy and stormy, BUT because it’s their winter, it was the best time to go on Safari on the other side of South Africa, which was Great Kruger National Park, so just remember, your season might not be their season. Best safari pants I brought was North Face Hybrid Yoga/cargo pants in olive — stretchy, quick dry, had tons of pockets, but felt like leggings. Also the lululemon “Smooth Departure” packable rain coat. Ultra light, and looks good while on safari or in the city. Lastly, even if you go during a “light bug” season, I would recommend at least one Insect Shield SPF long sleeve top (that can be also rolled up) and at least two pairs of their socks. Long sleeve shirts that have SPF can keep you cooler than a t-shirt because the African sun is HOT!! And even if you come from a sunny state (Like CA, as I do) your arms can get really get burnt. Also, a first layer underlayer (for cold) can do double duty. I wore it over my bathing suit while I was going into Devil’s Pool (Victoria Falls), and it really saved me because the water was COLD!! Because it was dry-wicking, it dried almost immediately. Also, just a note: our safari guides would NOT have recommended wearing that bright turquoise jacket that’s pictured in the photo (especially on a walking safari) — maybe it was more “neutral” looking in real life?

Hi Victoria, thank you for sharing your trip report with us and all your great travel tips! This is really helpful. Hope you had an incredible time on your trip! ?

Mari

Thank you for the advice! I am looking to travel to Togo, Africa at the end of January 2020 for roughly 2 months. I think the best take away for me I hadn’t really considered is laundry and drying time! I tend to get hot, sweat a lot and very easily. I will let you know how it goes!

Hi Mari, so pleased you found this atricle helpful. Looking forward to reading how you get on. Have the most incredible time! ?

Hello, we are going to Ezulwini Lodges in the middle of March. I have struggled over what to wear and what essentials I should take. I have loved reading all of your comments over the years and am finally taking a 7 night trip there. We are also going to spend 2 night in Maritime Bushveld Estates. Any thoughts on attire?

What shades of blue need to be avoided? Just dark blue or also aquamarine/baby blue and royal blue? How about lavender? Thx!

Janice Woeste

thank you for this very inclusive list. I appreciate all the work and effort to provide this resource.

Megan

YES it gets COLD, even in summer! Keep in mind that some local flights out into the bush have a weight limit on luggage so double check on this- they’re strict! Also, some safari’s do laundry daily so that helps cut down on what you need. I survived a 2 week trip with 2 pairs of leggings, 1 hiking pant from Athleta (cute!), 1 pr of shorts, 5 shirts, (mix of button ups, tanks and athletic type t’s) a fleece and a windbreaker. Don’t overdo the shoes either! One pair of sneaker types and one pair of sandals is fine!

alex

Great tips Megan, thanks!

Emily C

Great article! Having lived in Africa for the past nine years, I might also advise against wearing shorts. Most of Africa is significantly more conservative than many Western countries, and the only people I ever see in shorts are the tourists and, at times, wearing anything cut above the knee can attract unwanted attention from males- an unfortunate but true reality

Hi Emily, thank you so much for your comment! Thank you for sharing your travel advice 🙂

LAURIE C ALLEN

Hi Alex, Emily’s comment about shorts also might include strappy tank tops and leggings. Your comment about wearing sports bras was right on. Safari trucks have lousy shocks and you will be bounced around. A scarf is useful for keeping dust out of you eyes and mouth.

Mary Samson

This really helped me on my recent trip to Kenya and Tanzania. Thank you! 😊

Linda

Love your posts! What kind of shoes do you recommend? Are light nike trainers enough or do you need sturdier shoes that are waterproof? I am going on an overlanding trip to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana in July, not to many walking safaris scheduled. Thanks!

I found my regular cross trainers worked well as we only had one walking safari. A few more tips here: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-african-safari-tours/

We are going to Tanzania Zambia staying in lodge accommodation at the end of November,we are on the older side but are fairly fit. What clothes should I take..?we have a black tie do to attend in Zambia.I like clothes with sleeves

We are going to Cape Town for 4 days then winery for 4 days, safari for 5 then victoria falls. Will it look silly if I wear kaftans for dinners? And what about days for shopping and touring in towns? I can’t imagine having only a carry on and not a variety of clothing.

If you’d normally wear kaftans to dinners at home then you should wear them while you’re traveling too 🙂

Emmy Scammahorn

No blue clothing, as it (like black) attracts mosquitos. Bring decent underwear, something you won’t be embarrassed for camp staff to wash by hand, as I found one fellow doing. You’ll wear the long-sleeve shirt in the jeep during the afternoon so you don’t get sunburned. Unless you’ll hike, closed-toe sandals are good for everything. I wore clogs for the plane and around camp. Glad I brought a fleece jacket for cold mornings. I brought older clothing and left it. In Tanzania, I left sneakers with a camp staffer who was extremely grateful, even though they were one size too big for him. To my safari driver went my bathing suit and robe (someone will wear them), fleece jacket, and old Tevas. I suggest a headlamp, which you may need (tents and hotels were short on light).

Thanks for your feedback Emmy, great tips!

Midori

I would add one trash bag to the packing list. In the morning game drive on our last day of the safari, it rained cats and dogs on us, and we got soaked (we all had rain ponchos on but they didn’t help much). Thankfully, someone had trash bags to spare, so we could put the wet clothes in the bag and put in the luggage without everything else getting damp.

alex

That’s a really great tip Midori! thanks for sharing!

Jo

Is there a printable safari packing list so I can have it with me shopping, in my closet and when I am actually packing? Thanks

No printable option, maybe take screenshots of this post to help? Happy travels!

I have been to Tanzania (with way too many clothes) and am heading back to Africa for a trip to Cape Town, Namibia, and Victoria Falls. Your packing list suggestions are very helpful as I tend to grossly over pack! Thank you!!!

Thanks for reading Cathy! Sounds like you have an incredible trip planned! We are happy that you have found the packing suggestions helpful! Less stuff is less stress! Happy travels!

Cynthia Tilford

Great tips! What size bag did you pack? We’re going mid-July for 3 weeks, and will be spending several days on Mauritius at the end of our trip, so I’ll need to take a few things to dress up a bit.

Hi Cynthia, glad you like the post! This was before I traveled carryon only so I had a 65L backpack. However, I was on a round-the-world trip and had been traveling for nine months before I got to Africa.

Currently, I would never travel with anything larger than a 22″ or 46L suitcase since that’s what I use on my long-term travels now 😉 All the luggage styles Ive used throughout the years can be found here: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-osprey-backpacks/

Kate Grissom

Just got back from an Africa safari, and here is my recommendations: 1.) Take Sunscreen! I burned one half of my face sitting in the safari vehicle one day…so I switched sides to burn evenly the next. 2.) A hat would help combat problem #1. 3.) Don’t waste space on hair dryers or makeup etc. No one in the bush cares. 🙂 Bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste and call it done. 4.) I only brought hiking tennis shoes. I longed for a pair of flip flops on the long days in a car. 5.) It can get quite chilly at night. Bring long pants for sleeping if you are staying in a tented camp. I was on my honeymoon so pajama’s wasn’t a top priority when packing…wish it had been! Lol! 6.) Bring a clean outfit for the plane ride home and put it aside. Coming out of the bush after a week of bucket showers you feel dirty enough. 7.) Last and most important: Don’t pack anything that resembles food in a tented camp. I had a granola bar in my bag and we had a honey badger break into our tent while we were gone. It ate the granola bar, chewed up all my underwear, and then took a big poop in my husbands suit case!

Great tips Kate, thank you! Hope you had an amazing experience 🙂

Stephanie

At least one knee length skirt or dress is a must if you are going to be exploring outside of the parks at all. A sarong also goes a long way and I have a nice knit hat I alway bring along in the winter. Also, the first time I traveled to Tanzania I made the mistake of thinking I would only need camping gear and spent the whole time wishing I had a cute top with me. I highly recommend bringing an outfit you can wear to dinner or a club. Overall, great tips! Thanks!

Great add! Thanks 🙂

Georgie M

Thank you so much for this post! I have been searching everywhere for something like it and it’s perfect! I’m off to fashionable Dubai & Iran after overlanding in Africa, so I’m trying to figure out a way to keep my suitcase light AND have enough clothes that are fashionable and practical! I reckon a few colourful scarves may be the way to go, and one long black skirt as well as the above.

That sounds about right! You can always buy a few new things upon arrival. This post might also be helpful: http:/travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-dress-for-conservative-countries-modest-clothing-essentials/

Sue

I am not sure if you have already gone trekking or not, but I might consider changing your black skirt to tan, beige, grey or even light pink. I spent two years in and out of Dubai and Afghanistan….you will constantly be trying to clean your black skirt, the sand is more like a talcum powder and sticks to everything, also the dark colours are hot! You will definitely want something feminine/girlie though and the scarves are an excellent idea! Have a wonderful time! 🙂

great tips!

I love all your posts! One question, do the outfits go in addition to what you will be wearing or do you wear one of the outfits in the photos? Thanks!

Hi Catherine! Sorry, which outfits specifically? Thanks for commenting 🙂

Ilona

I think she means are the clothes pictured above ALL of the clothes for the trip, as in, are the clothes that you would be wearing on the way there and back included in the picture.

yes they are

Vanessa (@Turnipseeds)

As always, love, love, love the lists! In all parts of Africa, it’s best to always err on the side of modesty and cameo prints should always be avoided. On safari, it would be worth spending the extra money for clothing that is sunscreen rated/treated with bug repellent.

Thanks Vanessa!

Julia

Love that you show a sports bra – those African roads can be amazingly bumpy!!

Yes and painful without support! Ouch!

Lorette

I always bring gloves with me when I’m in Africa. The morning game drives are always cold.

Oooh that’s true! Forgot that one…thanks for the reminder 🙂

What to Wear on Safari if You’re On a Budget

simple safari outfit for ladies

Ever since I married my husband — engineer, outdoorsman, and overall pragmatist — I have to admit that I choose function over fashion when it comes to clothing. Sure, I clean up well when I need to, but first and foremost I’m about performance.

But I’m here to let you in on a little secret: unless you’re bushwalking or camping or taking part of an extreme challenge, your safari clothes don’t need to be high-tech. In fact, you might already have everything you need in your closet. Deciding what to wear on safari is only as complicated as you allow it to be. Don’t overthink it!

Am I Even Qualified to Tell You What to Wear on Safari?

Sure, I’ve only been on one African safari. But I’ve also gone to two different safari parks in Sri Lanka, visited numerous wildlife reserves in Central America, and camped — the version where you carry your own gear 20 miles into the woods — in numerous states, climates, and seasons.

Let me tell you: there are definitely times when what you wear matters, but there are also times when it matters a little less.

If you’re planning a vacation where you stay in a lodge and take game drives from there, it matters a little less.

So, What Does Matter When Choosing Clothes for Safari?

1) Versatility: Small planes have strict weight limits and lodge rooms can be a jaunt from the parking lot, so versatile clothing helps you pack light. Pack clothes that you can wear more than once.

wearing a backpack on the staircase

2) Comfort: You’re going to spend a lot of time in the car, so you’ll want to wear something that’s comfortable to sit in for hours at a time.

3) Practical Fabrics: Synthetic materials like nylon are often quick-to-dry, making them great for laundry on the go or activities when you expect to sweat. On the other hand, natural materials like linen and hemp are lightweight and breathable.

4) Sun and Insect Protection: As we’ll get to, this matters more in some places than others, but it’s definitely something you’ll want to keep in mind.

Packing Layers

People imagine Africa as hotter than hell, all the time.

In reality, there’s a good chance your safari takes you to somewhere where it can be quite cool when you’re up at sunrise or in the evening, especially in an open-air vehicle. Since game drives tend to be at these cooler points of the day, when animals are most active, it’s worth packing convertible pants and a jacket or sweater. As a bonus, you can always slip those long-sleeves back on if the bugs get too annoying.

Packing layers is a good idea on every trip, but it’s an absolute must if you’re heading on safari.

What About Bugs?

Just like anywhere in the world, insect activity varies by the time of year and type of ecosystem. Most of the safari parks I visited in Kenya weren’t too bad during my visit. It helped that our game drives kept us out of heavily wooded areas.

You’ll want to pack insect repellent, and if you’re traveling to a malaria zone, the type you bring is important. I used 30% Deet, but if you have sensitive skin or just prefer a more natural alternative, you can also use oil of lemon eucalyptus. Just be careful with what you buy — lemon eucalyptus oil (an essential oil that smells good) is not the same as oil of lemon eucalyptus (which has high concentrations of p-menthane 3,8-diol [PMD], proven to repel mosquitoes).

No matter what you’re wearing, you can also spray your clothing with permethrin in advance. This easy-to-use spray adds an extra layer of repellent and lasts for up to six washes or six weeks, whichever comes first. It’s a cheaper alternative than buying specialty “Bugs Away” clothing.

Sunburns HURT

I learned this lesson in Hawaii several years ago but apparently I needed to learn again: my sister SUCKS at applying sunscreen on my back. (I love her to death, I really do, but she missed a lot of spots!)

The sun is strong in Kenya, and in other safari countries too, so you’ll want to load up on sunscreen or keep your skin covered (as I did for days after initially getting burned badly!).

Sunglasses are also a must, both as sun protection and as a way to keep dust out of your eyes whenever your safari vehicle picks up speed and kicks dirt in through the open sides or windows.

I detest hats and avoid them at all costs, but if you’re more open-minded than me, you can bring a lightweight sun hat like this one that packs down for your suitcase, is sweat-wicking, and rated UPF 50 for extra sun protection.

Two Safari Outfit Ideas for Women

I brought too many clothes with me when packing for safari and found myself gravitating to the same few clothing items over and over again. If you’re looking for women’s safari outfit ideas, this is where I’d start.

My favorite safari outfit for game drives: a “ swing tank ” (flowy, super-soft, and great to beat the heat) with linen pants . And best of all, you can buy the whole outfit for $35-42 depending on how you hit a sale at Old Navy. Both pieces are easy to care for and look alright even after being smushed in your suitcase.

On more active days, I paired my beloved Prana Halle pants with a short sleeve Merino wool tee . These are more expensive pieces of clothing, but they’re wardrobe staples for anyone who’s active or outdoorsy. The Prana Halle pants have great stretch and quick dry properties but look more presentable at the dinner table than standard convertible pants. And Merino wool — if you haven’t heard me rave about it before — is breathable, moisture-wicking, and it never smells even if you wear it a few times.

Why Safari Clothes are Traditionally Beige

There’s a reason that neutral colors are portrayed as what to wear on safari. Bright colors are out because they make you conspicuous to animals. Dark clothes (blacks and blues especially) attract biting tsetse flies. And white just gets too dirty from dust or mud or being worn too many times before you do laundry!

That leaves tan, beige, and those khaki uniforms. Fashion at its finest.

I’m sure you can tell I paid little heed to color recommendations — I wasn’t about to spend a ton of money on all new clothes for safari. I wore white, as long as it was something old that I wouldn’t be heartbroken if it got too dirty. I wore colors, just not when I was on walking safaris (I figured on game drives, most of my body was obscured by the vehicle anyway). And I wore dark clothes whenever I didn’t expect tsetse flies to be a problem, meaning my blacks were just fine as long as I didn’t wear them in the evening or in areas with thick brush.

If you’re buying brand new, your best options are khaki, olive, or brown. But if you’re making do with what you’ve got, don’t sweat it too much.

On game drives, you won’t need special safari shoes, since you won’t be covering a lot of ground. I brought three pairs of footwear on my trip: a pair of lightweight sneakers for hikes and walks, a pair of knock-off “Toms” which I wore more often than not, and a pair of slip-on sandals to head to the pool (and Diani Beach, when we were on the coast).

BONUS TIP: Pack a low-impact sports bra for bouncy drives (especially if you intend on standing while the vehicle is moving). They’re usually built to withstand sweating, too!

Recommendations for Safari Clothes (Womens)

Need safari outfit ideas or just one or two pieces to add to your packing list? No problem: here are my favorite safari clothes for women. Mix and match with what you already own to save a bundle.

Old Navy Swing Tank

There's nothing fancy about this tank, but it holds up well, is very comfortable, and just the right temperature for safaris.

simple safari outfit for ladies

Linen Pants

I love how cool and flowy these pants are. Since they're linen, they do wrinkle, but the fit and fabric make it look decent even when you can't find an iron. Easy to wash and wear, too!

Merino Wool Tee

I promise, this wool isn't scratchy at all! This shirt is perfect for safari, and merino wool is versatile enough that it's a perfect investment for other trips, too, either as a standalone shirt or for layering.

Prana Halle Pants

I’m obsessed with the these pants — they move and stretch beautifully for hiking, but look nice enough that you can pull them off as real pants for dinner at the lodge or walking in town.

Zip-Up Fleece Jacket

If you don't already have a fleece jacket, they are the perfect outer layer for safari. Warm enough that you'll be comfy and cozy, but not so much you'll sweat when the sun comes out. This one by Columbia will last a long time and hold up well.

simple safari outfit for ladies

Smartwool Socks

I wore sandals a lot on my game drives, but when I wore "real" shoes, I always paired them with Smartwool socks. No matter how wet, sweaty, or gross my feet have gotten, with Smartwool I’ve never had smelly or blistered feet.

Safari Hats

If you're going to wear a hat, this one with moisture-wicking fabric and UV sun protection is the perfect choice.

What to wear on safari – 5 safari outfits for ladies

One of the biggest challenges I had when visiting Tanzania was choosing what to wear on safari. Although I had been on safari in Sri Lank a , it doesn’t compare to the 5 days of adventure through the Serengeti and other fascinating places on the African continent.

Every woman thinks about fashionable safari clothes to feel comfortable, practical, and look good in pictures. So, I want to inspire you through these 5 safari outfits for ladies.

Before moving on to the actual safari outfits and giving a grade to each one, depending on how I felt in it and the whole look, we need to know a few basic things and details that we need to keep in mind when choosing safari clothing for women.

Also, the end of the article contains some essential and valuable tips to make your adventure unforgettable.

What is a safari, and how long can it last

Safari is a term used to describe a journey in which you go to observe animals in their natural habitat. Basically, it is a much more empathetic alternative to visiting zoos or other forms of restricting animal freedom.

I have been in two such experiences so far. We did day safaris in Sri Lanka and a 5-day safari in Tanzania , in the country’s most important safari parks.

And by parks, I mean nature reserves, unaltered by man, huge regions where animals can walk freely and freely.

A safari can last from one day to 10 days or even longer in exceptional cases. Usually, the optimal time to fully enjoy this adventure is 5 days, but it also depends on the area you will explore.

However, you should know that a day of safari can take from 6 to 12 hours. For this reason, I insist that the clothes you wear on safari must be very comfortable.

What I use every time I travel:

Safari outfit tips that you need to know | What to wear on safari

Besides many other things to organize, you must carefully consider your clothes for the safari. Given my experience in Tanzania, I suggest you consider the following tips:

  • Try to make your safari outfits at home.
  • Pay close attention to the weight limit allowed by the airlines
  • Go for colors as natural as possible and close to the environment in which you will travel
  • Avoid very flashy colors, but also black and blue
  • Choose raw, breathable materials
  • Remember the temperature you will have to endure, depending on the season.
  • Remember that temperatures vary during the day, so it would be good to consider layering your safari outfits.

5 safari outfits for ladies

Outfit #1 for safari | What to wear on safari

On the first day, I visited Tarangire Park. I chose to wear a relatively light outfit of black boots, short jeans, and a T-shirt with an exciting print of safari animals.

I accessorized this safari outfit with yellow sunglasses and high sun protection, which I used almost daily. Boots are one of the best shoes for safari.

The shirt has linen and cotton, so it proved extremely comfortable and suitable for a safari outfit.

Instead, I don’t think I would wear jeans anymore. Jeans are not necessarily a material you want to wear for a whole day, not very suitable for safari clothing for women. Especially if they are too tight.

Points for this safari outfit: 7.5 out of 10

Safari outfit #2 | Safari attire for ladies

When I visited the Maasai tribe and Serengeti on the second day, I wore one of the most comfortable and classic safari outfits.

I chose a shorts and short-sleeved jumpsuit, a pair of very comfortable sneakers, and a hat I occasionally wore.

Sneakers are also some of the best shoes for safari since they are very comfortable and you can spend some hours wearing them.

The safari jumpsuit is one of the most versatile items of clothing you can think of when packing your safari luggage. It is light, comfortable, and looks good in photos.

Make sure the material is breathable; I chose linen.

Safari outfit #3 | What to wear on safari

Day three of the safari was one of the longest. So, I chose a very comfortable outfit in which I can move freely.

I kept the sneakers (as I said, some of the best shoes for safari), to which I added a leopard print skirt, a light T-shirt, and a wide linen shirt that ties at the waist. I used a headband for my hair to match the rest of the outfit.

I don’t recommend short skirts for safari, but they can become one of the most fashionable safari items with a small trick.

I added a pair of nude short tights underneath for more practicality and protection against mosquito bites. Speaking of which, don’t forget to add DEET mosquito sprays to your safari luggage!

Safari outfit #4 | Safari clothing for women

Day 4 corresponds to the exploration of the Ngorongoro crater. Here I chose to wear a pair of long, wide pants with a print inspired by nature.

I added a pale green top with straps, over which I put a short white denim jacket and a pair of nude sandals, very comfortable. I wore the same hat on my head.

It’s an outfit I felt pretty good in, especially since I spent most of the day in the car.

Safari outfit #5 | What to wear on safari

On the last day of the safari, I visited the coffee plantation in the complex, where we stayed overnight and explored Lake Manyara.

I said in a previous article that is my only regret in the safari.

I wore the same pair of shorts from the first day, a light leopard print top, black boots, and a casual blazer in a very light shade of brown.

It’s on the last position for me, and that’s because I didn’t feel comfortable at all in that pair of pants on the roads under construction in Manyara Park.

Points for this safari outfit:  7/10

What accessories should you wear on safari?

Sunglasses are the first accessory you should not miss from your safari luggage. Make sure you have at least one pair that matches the safari outfits you will wear but that will also provide you with the necessary protection against the sun’s rays.

Then don’t forget your hat or cap. Even if you will be in the car most of the time and you will be protected, there will be times when you have to go for lunch or observe the animals with the ceiling raised.

Accessories are the best items to use if you want to improve safari attire for women.

What kind of shoes should I wear on safari – Best shoes for safari

Depending on how far you will go and what the relief looks like in the area you are visiting, these are the best shoes for safari you must consider:

  • boots – choose a light pair with not very high soles
  • comfortable and durable sandals – are a good option when you do not have a very bumpy relief that you have to hike
  • sneakers – an ideal choice for safari, but go in colors that blend beautifully with nature
  • hiking boots – suitable for an extreme safari, in which you need a better grip

I think it goes without saying, but I still need to mention it. The shoes you should never bring on safari are heels, slippers, heeled ankle boots, and other footwear that we usually use in an urban environment.

What colors to wear on safari

The most suitable colors for safari outfits are those that, as I said above, blend beautifully with the environment. More precisely, with the soil and vegetation.

So, the best shades would be brown, beige, dry green, khaki, cream, olive, and other derivatives.

The most recommended colors are blue, black, and any bright color, such as a bright red or candy pink. The idea is not to attract the attention of animals and scare them.

Safari Outfits Ideas

Whether you’re going to the Australian outback, the Sahara desert, or to your sister-in-law’s themed party, knowing a few solid safari outfit ideas can only benefit you.

So, in this article, I’m going to teach you how to put together some safari outfits—that way you’ll look less like a tourist and more like a tour guide.

What Makes Up A Safari Outfit?

Safari Outfits Ideas

Safari outfit ideas are largely based on the climate that you’ll be exploring. Since most safaris take place in extremely warm or humid locations, you’ll want to consider wearing khaki items .

That’s because the material doesn’t attract too much sunlight so it won’t make you overheat.

Other pieces you may want to include in your safari outfit ideas are:

  • Pith helmets
  • Safari boots
  • Safari hats
  • Bush jackets
  • Khaki shorts

History Of Safaris

Safari Outfits Ideas

Before I tell give you more safari outfit ideas, let’s learn about the history of safaris.

The first documented safari, or what we would call a safari, was in 1836 . William Cornwallis Harris, an English hunter, began the practice as a way to observe flora, fauna, and animals from a peaceful distance.

The goal was not to interact with the wildlife (shocking, given Harris’ hunting proficiency) but to study it.

Harris’ methodology involved getting up early, lots of movement throughout the day to see as many of the animals as possible, and a nightly dinner to review everything he and his fellow safari men saw that day.

This format is still used today but it’s far from the only one. For example, Newland & Tarlton Ltd. invented luxury tented safaris , which is another variation that’s safer for the participants while costing them much more.

What Are Some Popular Safari Outfit Ideas?

Safari Outfits Ideas

Safari outfit ideas tend to be pretty similar since they usually consist of a combination of athletic wear and relaxed-fitting khaki clothing.

You’ll often find that the outfits are pretty uniform when it comes to color because they’re built to repel sunlight . This is the case whether you’re looking for safari outfit men’s looks or safari outfit women’s styles.

Safari Outfits Ideas

My first safari outfit idea involves probably the darkest colors I’d recommend wearing if you’re going on an actual safari. However, if you want a safari-theme outfit for a party then this is a great look.

It has everything you could want in a safari outfit—the baggy fits, earthy tones, and relaxed materials. However, the ensemble has a distinctive fashionista’s flair.

Safari Outfits Ideas

This is a much more conventional safari guide outfit that’d actually serve you well in the field. I adore the one-piece that retains its shape thanks to the belt. However, this look is all about the accessories.

Of course, you’ll want your accessories to be functional when you’re on a safari expedition because you don’t want to lug around unnecessary weight.

So keep that in mind when thinking about safari outfit ideas. This outfit shows how you can add a few personal touches to your fit without ruining your mobility.

The hat and sunglasses are both essential as you’ll be out in the sun for long periods of time. They’ll protect you from UV rays that could harm your skin and tire you out.

Yet it’s the bag that I’m most impressed by because it’s a stylish way to carry everything you need in a format that’s different than a backpack.

Fashion Tips To Avoid With Safari Outfits

Safari Outfits Ideas

Here are the things you’ll want to avoid when putting together your safari outfit ideas.

  • Don’t wear accessories unless you need them to survive. Of course, I’m being a bit melodramatic, but safaris aren’t the place for heavy jewelry or dangly earrings.
  • Stay away from black as it’ll attract too much sunlight and you’ll likely overheat .
  • Don’t wear slip-on shoes , high heels, or other footwear that doesn’t fit most safari outfit ideas’ standard aesthetic.

Best Places To Buy Safari Outfits

Some of my favorite places to purchase safari outfit ideas include:

  • Banana Republic
  • Eddie Bauer

Final Thoughts

Safari Outfits Ideas

Assembling a few great safari outfit ideas can be fun once you learn the fundamentals . It’s all a matter of toying around with lighter colors and breathable textiles.

And with enough practice, you might end up looking like a grown-up Dora the Explorer, and I mean that as a compliment.

On-Trend Winter Dresses to Keep You Warm This Season

Stylist-approved styles to leave heads turning all season long.

woman wearing a winter dress

Styling Winter Dresses

Textured winter dresses, cozy knit dresses, lingerie-inspired dresses, structured dresses, maxi dresses, meet the expert.

Now that the days are significantly shorter, we all want to spend as little time getting dressed and as much time out and about as possible. So, naturally, when picking an outfit, it's easy to opt for a quick option like a dress, which simplifies your routine and looks effortlessly chic. But when looking for the best dresses for winter with which to restock your closet, it's best to understand which options suit the weather best, channel current trends, and are able to transition seamlessly from workday to nightlife.

Marissa Galante Frank , the fashion director at Bloomingdale’s, is an expert in dressing for any season, so I asked for her advice on how best to find and accessorize winter dresses. Below, her take on trending winter dress styles along with advice on how to style them. Your new favorite winter outfit awaits.

When wearing a dress, it's easy to throw one's hands up and consider oneself done. After all, we wear dresses because they're easy, right?

In reality, when opting for a dress, the accessorizing possibilities are endless. Frank notes that oversized winter coats , Mary Janes, and tights all look fabulous with winter dresses and channel a sense of "really polished femininity." Tights, in particular, look great with mini dresses and feed into this year's sheer trend, adding a bit of texture to an otherwise plain outfit.

Another method of accessorizing, she says, is to go for a monochromatic look, which she says is "a great way to feel put together, look chic, and again, have that 24-hour item," so you can go from works to dinner to drinks with ease. An example, she says, is wearing a slip dress with a same-colored sweater over it, which "goes back to that sort of texture play."

Finally, she calls the belt "a key accessory for the season," particularly when cinching the waist over a blazer dress, maxi dress, or pleated dress.

Incorporating texture into your outfit is a great way to keep things interesting, and Frank agrees wholeheartedly, citing a few textures that are particularly in style this season. One of them? Sequins , which have taken over runways over the past few months.

"We love sequins, right?" says Frank. "They're so fun, they're so festive, and I think that that's a great way to dress for the holidays." She also notes that lace, mesh, and velvet are classic looks for the holiday season, whether they're included in the design of your dress or channeled in your accessories.

And for those who are feeling particularly romantic this season, Frank recommends dresses with rosettes—a detail she says has been "everywhere" lately.

"We love them," she gushes. "They're so feminine and we just think that within dresses, this is a great new update and detail, and we feel like these are going to continue into 2024."

white dress with chiffon skirt, lace sleeves, and tweed breast

Sweater dresses are a natural go-to during long, cold winters, and Frank adds that they're an option "you can really wear all day long and really [lend themselves to] that 24 hour dressing." In terms of accessorizing this cozy option, she says, "you can layer them, of course, and I think that that's key in the winter months."

long beige sweater dress with side slit

"This season, something that is a major trend across dresses and beyond the ready-to-wear is lingerie dressing, so anything that really nods to that lingerie aesthetic," explains Frank. "So lace, sheerness, corset details, and, of course, the slip dress, which is such a big favorite."

More specifically, she calls slip dresses versatile and "key," noting that they're "always a chic option." She suggests "layering a blazer or a sweater over for the office with a chunky boot, and wearing them out at night," reiterating that they "can be dressed up and dressed down"—something that's essential for the woman who doesn't have the time (or purse space) for midday outfit changes.

Other lingerie-inspired looks include options that include lace or corset detailing, which can also be made versatile with layering.

midi slip dress

In contrast to lingerie dressing, Frank says that structured styles are also in vogue this winter, saying that "a big, boxy blazer" is an option that "feels very cool and effortless." Like the slip dress , it can be worn at work and then to late-night drinks, and can even be paired with the svelte slip dress for a balanced, versatile look.

black mini blazer dress

Frank also counts maxi-length dresses among the top trends this winter season.

"I think in the summer, the maxi dress is something that I feel like everyone's familiar with, but I think what's interesting this season is that this winter, the maxi dress is also really important," she says. "So whether that's in a slip or that's a sweater dress that you're belting, that's a great option for the winter season, because it's also a little bit warmer and little more comfortable, which is something that I feel like we all can appreciate." Plus, when the hem of your dress reaches your ankles or lower, you can relax and leave the tights at home.

After appearing on almost every major spring-summer runway, white dresses are officially must-buys for the months ahead. Stretchy tank dresses and breezy eyelet numbers are just as low-key, trendy, and easy to style, especially if you’re packing a suitcase.

Bold prints are also on the menu, as are puffy silhouettes and sheer dresses—a key 2024 fashion trend that’s only getting stronger as we head further into the year. Once-controversial drop-waist designs are also back in the zeitgeist, and we’re obsessed with their casual elegance; they’re also easier to style than you might remember (and readily available on Amazon). Ready to get your summer capsule wardrobe in order? These are the of-the-moment dresses to invest in now, according to style editors.

1. Little white dresses

2024 dress trends

White dresses always look their best this time of year, but they’re especially trendy right now, given that Prada, Tory Burch, Tove, and many more labels showed stark white styles for summer. They’re great for anything—think backyard celebrations, date nights, and rooftop soirees. And there’s an option in any silhouette and at every price point, from Reformation’s under-$250 stunner to Zesica’s $50 Amazon gem. Many could even double as low-key bridal looks, should summer nuptials be in your future.

2. Drop-waist silhouettes

2024 dress trends

Popularized in the 1920s and revived in the ’60s and ’00s, drop-waist dresses are officially back in fashion, thanks to brands like Alaïa, Sandy Liang, and Mirror Palais. We’re excited to give the look another go, seeing as it elongates the body and gives off a sort of modern-day princess vibe. Whether you go with a stretchy pick or something more structured, try pairing your dress with the shoes of the season: mesh ballet flats or slingback heels .

This summer, more is more. Let your outfit do the talking with these eye-catching prints, which approach florals with the colorful intensity of an acid trip. The best part of this trend, at least to us, is that there’s no one silhouette associated with it—you’re free to go as breezy or covered-up as you’d like, depending on your mood. The only requirement? Have fun.

4. Easy tank dresses

2024 dress trends

If you live in tank tops come high summer, you need a few tank dresses in your warm-weather rotation. Some look like longline tanks for that trendy tenniscore vibe , others feature gathered skirts for a more elevated look. Either way, though, this is one of the easiest ways to wear as little fabric as possible while still looking presentable.

5. Pumped-up volume

2024 dress trends

Conventional wisdom would have you believe that “flattering” means “body-skimming”—but thanks to the recent rise of Scandi-girl styling, that rule has been flipped on its head. The fashion world is obsessed with voluminous dresses, which popped up in the spring collections at Cecilie Bahnsen, Molly Goddard, and Carolina Herrera. Puffy sleeves, bubble skirts, and babydoll silhouettes are the dramatic, ultrafeminine details your summer wardrobe is missing. (Style your picks with athletic sneakers for Copenhagen bonus points.)

6. Sheer numbers

2024 dress trends

Sheer materials have been the hottest thing in fashion for a few seasons now, and the trend shows no sign of slowing down. Before you stop us, let’s get something straight: This isn’t about baring it all (unless you’re in the mood to free the nipple). Instead, labels like Prada, Proenza Schouler, Chanel, and Simone Rocha played with sheer layers for summer, mastering the art of showing just enough skin. Try your hand at the trend with these picks, which either feature strategic sheer elements or would pair well with your nicest underwear .

7. Eyelet dresses

2024 dress trends

After a few seasons out of the spotlight, we expect eyelets to make a major return in 2024. Preppy and romantic, the details add ease to any summer dress—and also allow for all-important airflow. Try an eyelet minidress for your next sweltering outdoor occasion, then switch into a longer, off-the-shoulder option for chillier evenings.

8. Preppy stripes

2024 dress trends

Preppy fashion is having a major moment right now, meaning that stripes are also along for the ride. The summery print is incredibly easy to style; it looks just as great with walking sandals as it does with white sneakers or comfortable heels . Stripes are also perfect for seaside escapes, calling to mind classic coastal style; if you’re headed to a beach this season, make sure you have at least one of these picks in your suitcase.

OUTFITS FOR MATURE WOMEN

Celebrities inspired outfits, outfits for plus-size women, what should i bring with me when traveling to russia.

If you are a first-time traveler confused about what you should bring to Russia, here’s the simplest answer:

  • For winters – thermal, long coats, mufflers, earbuds, gloves, warm shoes, and socks.
  • For summ er – long skirts, light wear jackets, and maxi dresses.

  • Keep the necessities first , like your documents, laptop, extensions, phone charger, utilities, hand sanitizer, masks (just in case), insect repellent, and sunscreen.

What To Wear In Russia - Tips

  • If there is more than one city on your trip, try to keep your luggage minimum . Try to add statement pieces from your wardrobe. For example, don’t keep too many coats. It will take up more space. Take just one or a maximum of two coats which you can style with every outfit.

What To Wear In Russia - Tips

  • Pack shoes that are comfortable to wear the whole day. If you are traveling in winter, then you prefer boots over sneakers. It is because, with sneakers, there is always a chance your foot will get wet in the rain.

What To Wear In Russia - Tips

CASUAL & EASY OUTFITS

You can find hiking trails, parks, and much other adventurous stuff to do in Russia. So pack casual and easy outfits in which you can feel comfortable all day.

Instead of heels, I suggest you carry sneakers because you will walk a lot there. You can wear shorts, there’s no harm in that, but jeans are more prevalent among locals.

21 – Yellow Top With Black High-Waisted Pants And Green Silk Oversized Shirt For Airport

For the airport, always select comfy clothes. Whenever I choose my airport outfits , I remember that the fabric shouldn’t be too tight because it can be irritating if the flight is long. You can always choose oversized hoodies for the airport, but this outfit is perfect if you want to look chic.

Pick a yellow crop top with black high-waisted pants. You can pair it with any oversized button-down shirt. Roll the sleeves up for a chic look.

Lastly, choose your comfiest pair of sneakers to complete your look. Accessorize your look with black shades and carry a tote bag for all your belongings.

What To Wear In Russia

20 – Olive Spaghetti Strap Crop Camisole With White Collared Crop Top And Beige Shorts

Another casual outfit you can easily wear on a sunny day is an olive spaghetti strap camisole with beige shorts. You can wear an oversized shirt and tie it from the front to create a cover-up, or you can also wear a cropped jacket.

For footwear, sneakers are the best option if you plan to walk. Otherwise, white slides will also look fine.

This outfit is perfect for the day when you haven’t planned much for the trip and want to walk around the streets to appreciate the surroundings casually.

What To Wear In Russia

19 – Green Sweatshirt With Light Blue Flared Denim Jeans And Mint Sherpa Jacket

While in Russia, you had to travel from one city to another. Russia has one of the largest rails, so you should definitely experience it while you are there.

Don’t bother to wear anything too fancy for your train ride. Just wear a hoodie and light blue flared denim jeans. Pair your outfit with a mint green sherpa jacket.

Another tip if you are visiting Russia for the first time is don’t carry too much stuff. Instead of taking many handbags, go with a staple crossbody bag and a big tote bag that can fit your important stuff.

simple safari outfit for ladies

Russia has a lot of monuments to visit. Cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg are famous for heritage and culture, so you can see museums, galleries, and architecture.

Although Russians are not the biggest fan of bold and bright patterns, but you can wear dark shades for the night outs, like a fancy dinner at a yacht.

I suggest wearing light colors for the churches and museums and going with dresses because they look more formal. If you are on a business trip, then choose skirts.

18 – Purple Crewneck Full-Sleeves Midi Dress With Pink Belt And Purple Hat

If you want to wear modern clothes in Russia, but for a formal gathering, then there’s nothing a better option than a crewneck midi dress.

You can add a pink belt and a purple hat for a voguish look. Go with transparent heels if you are attending a party or brown boots if you are just out to admire the beauty of the place.

Accessorize your outfit with a few bracelets and rings. A little tip for you is to avoid neck pieces with crewneck dresses. Keep your makeup minimal, and a bright shade of lipstick is all you need to

What To Wear In Russia

17 – Red Silk Front Knot Bishop Sleeves Top With Matching Red Skirt

A Red Silk outfit is the perfect option for clubbing when you are in Russia. You can wear lace-up heels with this dress for an evening glam look.

Keep your makeup dewy, and use minimal jewelry to complete the look. Lastly, do your hair in a beachy waves style, so you don’t have to tie them up.

What To Wear In Russia

SUMMER & SPRING OUTFITS

Summer is a perfect time to travel to Russia if you want to explore this country’s hidden gems. The temperature ranges from 20 to 30-degree celsius. Remember that Russians wear modest clothing, so don’t bring anything too short. Otherwise, you will feel uncomfortable around the locals.

Although you can enjoy good sunny days in Russia, you will soon find out that the temperature is unpredictable. So always carry light wear jackets and umbrellas with you.

16 – Black And White Stripe Sweatshirt With Beige Pleated Skirt And Fleece Stockings

An easy way to wear skirts in Russia is to pair them with stockings. You can wear any top from your wardrobe or a sweatshirt and wear a skirt. Choose chunky white sneakers to complete the look.

What To Wear In Russia

15 – Printed Elastic Top With Brown Oversized Button Down Shirt And Beige High-Waisted Pants

Printed shirts are pretty popular these days. You can easily pair them with cargo pants or high-waisted jeans. Add a beige oversized button-down shirt to bring that spring vibe. Lastly, a tote bag would match the look perfectly.

simple safari outfit for ladies

14 – White Sports Bra, White Pleated Skirt, And Pink Sheer Button-Down Shirt

What to pack for Russia in summer is the most asked question by first-time visitors. You don’t have to go over the board while packing. Keep your luggage minimum, so you don’t have to worry about that. Since we are talking about summer, an all-white outfit is a must. Pair a white sports bra with a white pleated skirt.

You can add a feminine touch by wearing a pink button-down shirt over it. Keep the buttons open, or tie them from the front as you like. Lastly, choose white pair of sneakers to finish the look. Keep your jewelry minimal, and that’s it.

What To Wear In Russia

13 – White Crop Top, Ripped Blue Jeans, And Denim Crop Jacket

Another important question I have mostly heard is what not to wear in Russia. When you search your query, you might get answers like don’t wear ripped jeans in Russia. However, the reality is that tourists in Russia have no dress code.

Pair a white tank top with blue jeans and wear a blue denim jacket. Choose white sneakers and match your belt with the color of your footwear. For the accessory, add silver hoops to keep your look elegant. Last but not least, don’t forget to carry a sling bag.

What To Wear In Russia

WINTER & FALL OUTFITS

Russain winters are extremely cold, and you can face heavy snowfall, so always come prepared for that. The temperature varies from -2°C/28°F to -28°C/-18°F. Therefore, it’s wise to pack a lot of layers.

Whether going to Moscow’s Red Square or Hermitage Museum at the Winter Palace, you need to wear a lot of warm clothes. I suggest wearing a thermal first, then a sweater, and lastly a long coat – basically you want to layer like a pro . Wear waterproof boots and don’t forget to pack gloves.

12 – Blue And White Turtle Neck Sweater With Black Jeans And Black Fur Coat

Winters are always extreme in Russia, especially from November to March. Try to pack according to the season, and I suggest checking the weather app for dates of your stay beforehand because Russia’s cold weather can freeze you to death. Another factor to consider here is which cities are on your list.

Wear a sweater with your warmest jeans. Now layer a black fur coat and white cap. You can also add wool gloves; trust me, you will need them. Use a crossbody bag; it will be easy to carry around.

What To Wear In Russia

11 – Black Crop Top And Pink Sweatpants With Black Denim Jacket

If you are visiting an area that is not so cold, pair your black sweatshirt with pink joggers. Add a black leather jacket to give you a comfy yet stylish vibe. Choose chunky sneakers for that extra height. Lastly, add black shades to complete your look.

simple safari outfit for ladies

10 – Light Blue Turtle Neck And Leather Blazer With White Sherpa Coat

If you like leather blazers and trousers, pair them with a light blue turtleneck and a white sherpa coat. You can accessorize minimal jewelry. Also, for snowy areas, wear boots instead of sneakers. Add colors with pink sunglasses, and that’s it.

simple safari outfit for ladies

09 – White Turtle Neck And Black Pants With Long White Coat And Checkered Print Muffler

A white turtle neck and white coat are a great combination with black jeans and black boots. But to elevate the look of your outfit, add prints with mufflers or caps. Checkered print in white and black is an excellent option for pairing.

simple safari outfit for ladies

08 – Off-White Co-Ord Set With Boots And Long Oversized Brown Coat

Co-ord sets are pretty common these days; almost everyone has a pair of them in their wardrobe. You can layer your white co-ord set with thermals and put on a brown wool coat for extreme weather. Wool coats are best for Russian winters, so don’t forget to pack them with you.

simple safari outfit for ladies

07 – Greyish Black Turtleneck Dress With Black Wool Coat And Checkered Bucket Hat

Turtleneck dresses look super cute and are easy to style. Thanks to the legging makers who came up with the idea that you can wear leggings in winter, and thanks to Tiktok for making it so popular. Also, add a black wool coat and a bucket hat to finish the look.

simple safari outfit for ladies

06 – Green V-Neck Pleated Midi Dress With White Strap Sandals

Midi dresses are the perfect option for desi moms on vacation. Not too fancy but not so casual, wear green midi dresses with white strap sandals. Either go with sandals or choose sneakers, depending on your comfort level.

What To Wear In Russia

05 – White Hoodie And White Straight Pants With Colorful Printed Coat And White Mary Jane Shoes

White hoodies, sweatpants, and a colorful cardigan are the best ways to spend your lazy days in Russia when you want to roam around the streets. Also, the colorful cardigan is a staple piece because you can style it with many outfits.

What To Wear In Russia

04 – Black Spaghetti Strap Mini Dress With White Detailing And Long Fur Coat

When it comes to styling statement pieces, no one can do it better than Hailey Bieber. Choose a black mini dress and pair it with a long fur coat. Add long boots to finish the look. It’s a perfect outfit for clubbing in Russia.

What To Wear In Russia

03 – Beige Turtle Neck And High Waisted Skirt With Brown Belt And Beige Coat

If sophistication and elegance could be defined with one picture, then this would be it. Pair the beige turtleneck with a high-waist skirt. You can add a beige or brown long beige coat. Style long brown boots with this outfit and match your belt with boots to add colors to the look.

What To Wear In Russia

02 – Grey Top With Black Elastic Waist Trousers And Black Blazer

A grey ribbed shirt with black elastic waist trousers is perfect for comfortable sightseeing in Russia. There is no specific dress code for tourists in Russia so you can style everything. Choose a black blazer if you want to keep your look subtle. Accessorize your outfit with golden hoops, and a chain necklace would be a nice addition.

Carry a vibrant or bright color bag to contrast the outfit. Lastly, sightseeing means a lot of walking, so pick your most comfortable sandals, and you are all set to go out for the day.

What To Wear In Russia

01 – Green Printed V-NeckFront-Knot Pleated Midi Dress With Black Sandals

Another excellent outfit if you want to dress apart from traditional clothes in Russia is a flowy midi pleated dress. You can choose a V-neck long sleeves dark green dress with embellishment of black detailing on it. Choose black sandals with laces so you can wrap them around your foot.

Roll up the sleeves if the weather is too hot. By the way, it is the best look to go with if you are searching for what to wear in Russia in summer. Wear a smartwatch as an accessory. Lastly, pick up your colored shades so you can enjoy the sightseeing without getting your eyes affected by sun rays.

What To Wear In Russia

Q: Can you wear jeans in Russia?

Ans: Russia never directly bans jeans. However, in the past, there were restrictions on clothing from the western world, but now jeans are pretty popular in style here and will serve as an adjustable base for your outfit when paired with lighter layers in the summer and heavier ones in the winter.

Q: Is there a dress code in Russia?

Ans: For Russians, there are some standard norms for dressing. However, for tourists there’s no dress code in Russia.

Q: How should I dress in Moscow?

Ans: Because of how conservative Russia is, bright colors will make you stick out, especially in the winter. Moreover, denim is very popular in Moscow in the summer and throughout the year.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: NATO comments open door to allowing Ukraine to strike Russia with Western weapons

Ukraine's use of weapons supplied by its Western allies to hit targets inside Russia would not make NATO and its members part of the conflict, NATO secretary-general has said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for Joe Biden to attend a peace summit organised by Kyiv in Switzerland next month.

The Ukrainian president said if the US president missed the event it would be like a standing ovation for Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine hopes to host as many countries as possible in an effort to unite opinion on how to halt the war and heap pressure on Russia, which has seized almost a fifth of Ukraine's territory.

"I know that the US supports the summit but we don't know at what level," Mr Zelenskyy said in Brussels at a joint press conference with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

"[The] peace summit needs President Biden and so do the other leaders who look at the reaction of the United States.

"His absence would be an applause to Putin, a personal standing applause to Putin."

On Sunday Mr Zelenskyy urged both Mr Biden and his Chinese counterpart and Mr Putin's close ally, Xi Jinping, to attend the summit .

Russia has said it sees no point in the conference.

These pictures show Russian volunteers posing before handing over equipment to an informal military unit consisting of Russians fighting in the armed forces of Ukraine in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The funds are from voluntary donations from Russian citizens and ethnic Russians living in Bulgaria.

More than 1,400 Russian troops have been injured since last Friday, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Defence.

Moscow also lost 21 tanks and 40 armoured combat vehicles, it said.

Although Western estimates of Russian losses differ from Ukraine's, it is nonetheless a sign of the staggering human cost of the war for Moscow.

Russia does not routinely publish numbers of casualties or losses of equipment. Ukraine provides some figures - but infrequently.

In February, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that 31,000 of his troops had been killed in two years of war.

Poland should not rule out sending troops to Ukraine, foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in comments published today.

It comes as Kyiv struggles to repel Russian advances in eastern Ukraine.

Mr Sikorski did not specify what role Polish troops would play in the conflict.

Ukraine's NATO allies have vowed to supply the beleaguered nation with weapons and money for as long as it takes to fend off Russia's invasion, but they have generally ruled out the possibility of sending soldiers.

Asked in an interview whether Poland was ready to send troops to Ukraine, Mr Sikorski said: "We shouldn't rule it out. We should leave Putin guessing as to our intentions".

The interview was published in Poland's Gazeta Wyborcza, Italy's La Repubblica and Spain's El Pais.

Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested Western troops could help with the training of Ukrainians in Ukraine.

It comes after Ukraine's top military commander said he had signed paperwork allowing French military instructors to visit Ukrainian training centres soon.

As Russia opens a new front on Ukraine's northeastern border, the war has entered an important phase.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the changing battlefield environment.

Today, Tali-IhanTala asks:

When will F-16s arrive? I truly believe they will mark a turning point in the War.

Military analyst Sean Bell  had this to say:

Although there is growing expectation that the initial tranche of F-16 fighter jets being donated to Ukraine could arrive as soon as early July, it is not clear whether the other ingredients of this powerful air power capability will be in place by that time.

Providing a credible and effective Ukrainian combat air capability requires suitably trained and experienced pilots, ground crew, weapons, defensive aids and radar. All these components need to be in place before the Ukrainian Air Force will be ready to go into battle with the Russian military.

Once the F-16s are place, the challenge facing Ukraine will be when and where to use these valuable resources - and how to avoid them being destroyed before they can contribute to the Ukrainian defensive effort.

They will provide Ukraine with an invaluable - albeit scarce - resource. The F-16s could be used to support the frontline, but they will be very vulnerable in that dynamic and hostile air environment.

They could also be used to conduct strikes against key military targets inside Russian territory, which would certainly force a change in Moscow's tactics. Or, if Ukraine wanted to threaten Crimea, the F-16s could be used in a coordinated attack in support of a wider campaign.

Regardless, with Russia on the front foot in the Donbas, Ukraine needs all the help it can to reverse Russian momentum on the battlefield.

Ukraine's use of weapons supplied by its Western allies to hit targets inside Russia would not make NATO and its members part of the conflict, NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg has said.

His comments come after NATO's Parliamentary Assembly called for member states to support Ukraine's "international right" to defend itself by lifting "some restrictions" on Kyiv's use of Western weapons to strike within Russian territory.

The declaration adopted also called for member states to accelerate their deliveries of critical weapons to Ukraine.

Several NATO states, including the UK, have already lifted such restrictions, but not enough Western states have done so to challenge Moscow's ability to freely conduct airstrikes or stage ground operations against Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has secured a pledge of additional air defence missiles from Spain to combat around 3,000 bombs he says Russia launches every month at Ukraine.

Yesterday the Ukrainian president said Kyiv still needed another seven US-made Patriot air defence systems to stop Russia hitting the power grid and civilian areas, as well as military targets, with devastating glide bombs.

"If we had these modern Patriot systems, [Russian] airplanes wouldn’t be able to fly close enough to drop the (glide) bombs on the civilian population and the military," Mr Zelenskyy told a news conference in the Spanish capital.

Since the meeting, the Netherlands has pledged to deliver parts of a Patriot air defence system to Ukraine and is talking to other countries in order to assemble a complete system (see 8.39am post).

Mr Zelenskyy and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez signed a bilateral security agreement allocating €1bn (£851m) of military aid to Ukraine this year, and €5bn (£4.3bn) by 2027. The package also features more Leopard tanks and artillery ammunition.

Ukraine's top commander says he has signed paperwork allowing French military instructors to visit Ukrainian training centres soon.

"I am pleased to welcome France's initiative to send instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian servicemen," Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Telegram yesterday after talks via video link with French defence minister Sebastien Lecornu.

"I have already signed the documents that will enable the first French instructors to visit our training centres shortly and familiarise themselves with their infrastructure and personnel."

He said he believed France's determination would encourage other partners to join the "ambitious project".

Ukraine's defence ministry posted a "clarification" later on X to say Kyiv had been expressing interest in a project receiving foreign instructors since February. "As of now, we are still in discussions with France and other countries on this issue," it said.

French President Emmanuel Macron had suggested Western troops could help train Ukrainians in Ukraine at a conference in Paris in February.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Belgium's Prime Minister Alexander De Croo have signed a security pact in Brussels.

Mr De Croo said the pact includes the delivery of 30 F-16 fighter jets to Kyiv and at least €977m (£832m) in Belgian military aid to Ukraine this year.

Separately, the Netherlands had pledged to deliver parts of a Patriot air defence system to Ukraine, its defence minister has said.

It is also talking to other countries in order to assemble a complete system, Dutch defence minister Kajsa Ollongren said.

"With our offer, and if other potential partner countries are able to deliver parts and ammunition, we would be able to supply at least one complete system to Ukraine in the short term," she said.

The Russian-held city of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine came under attack twice within three hours early this morning.

Fires appeared to have broken out at the locations of both strikes.

Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-installed governor of the Luhansk region, said the first attack at around 9pm (6pm UK time) was made with cluster munitions.

Russia's Tass news agency said there had been injuries, quoting emergency services, while Ukrainian media and war bloggers posted a picture of what they described as a large fire in the city.

A second strike hit the city at midnight, according to a Russian foreign ministry official, apparently in the same general area.

Rodion Miroshnik, a special ambassador for the ministry, said local residents had heard two explosions in the same district as the site of the first attack.

"It cannot be ruled out that the repeat strike occurred at the site where rescue teams are dealing with the aftermath of the previous missile attack," Mr Miroshnik wrote on Telegram.

Ukrainian news outlets said the target of the second strike was an airfield and posted a video of a fire spreading over a wide area.

Ukraine's military has launched at least three attacks on Luhansk and nearby areas in recent weeks, targeting mainly fuel storage depots.
