Tatra guide — how to visit & what to do in tatra national park, poland.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Tatra National Park is one of my Poland’s favorite places that few people know about it. I came to Tatra in the winter with fanciful white snow, so magical and beautiful, but my hotel owner also advised to come back again in spring or summer, or preferably in March. At that time, there will be less people, mostly animals, feel free to listen to birds chirping, murmuring streams, immerse in lush greenery, flowers bloom everywhere… I really like Poland! Cheap prices compared to the common European level, beautiful nature and cities that are both ancient and full of history! So, how to visit and what to do in Tatra mountains Poland (Tatra Poland, Tatras Poland, Tatras Mountains Poland, Tatra National Park Poland)? Let’s check out our fullest Tatra guide (Tatra mountains guide) to find out the answer!

Tatra mountains guide: When is the best time to visit Tatras Mountains Poland?

tatra mountains poland tourist

Surely when you are planning a trip to explore the Tatra Mountains, you will wonder when is the best time to go? The answer depends on yourself. Because depending on your preferences, you will choose the good time to travel. Whenever you like, it’s a beautiful time for you to take a Tatra Mountains trip. Actually, you can visit Tatra all year round.

tatra mountains poland tourist

However, if you like to participate in sports activities here such as skiing, winter when the snow is thick will be the ideal time for you to experience. In addition, if you like to hiking or climbing and visit nature reserves, then summer is the right time to make your trip.

Tatra guide: How to get to Tatra Mountains Poland (Tatra Poland)?

Specifically, Tatra is a very large national park with many villages and towns. Among them Zakopane is most famous because it is near Krakow (a very gentle and lovely tourist city of Poland). So, getting to Zakopane is the most convenient. This city is about 1.5 hours drive from Krakow and 6 hours from Warsaw capital. You can easily self-drive to Zakopane if you want. But I did not go this way, so please don’t talk about it.

tatra mountains poland tourist

There are many buses to Zakopane from Krakow, every fifteen or twenty minutes with a trip, there is almost no waiting. There are two or three bus companies that alternately run from Krakow’s Bus Station, such as PolskiBus (Polish huge red buses, service quality is very good), or you can take minibus of other companies at that station. Please ask clearly what bus platform it is because there are several companies that run this route to avoid go wrong platform.

The bus price is around 17-18 ZL (1 EUR is about 4 ZL), so the bus ticket price is around 4 to 5 EUR, very cheap. I recommend you should bring cash in Poland. Although it’s easy to use the payment cards, but when you take a train or pay at milkbars, cash is prefer.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Buying bus tickets direct from the driver is also no problem, even more convenient than buying from the counter. In the low seasons, you should buy from the driver. But in peak seasons like winter (from mid-December to late January, the “whole world” flocks to Tatra to bathe in hot springs and ski) or summer (from early July to mid-October, the whole world goes on vacations) then buying from the driver means you have to prepare for the jostling with the locals. But the bus runs continuously from early morning to late evening so you don’t have to worry about lack of buses.

Tours are also available from Warsaw or other cities. But depart from Krakow is the most convenient. Moreover, you can still spend a few days to visit the beautiful city of Krakow, it is great, right?!

tatra mountains poland tourist

There is also a train from Krakow to Zakopane, the price is about 15, 17 zl or more, I don’t remember clearly but it takes longer than taking the bus. Bus usually takes 2 hours to 2 and a half hours (in peak season, it takes about 3 hours). The train time is probably 3 hours. If you are afraid of the rush in the peak season, you can take the train and it’s ok.

Tips: Right next to the Zakopane station, there is a Polish milkbar with wooden doors, the food is extremely cheap but quite delicious. The soups range from 10 to 15zl (3, 4 eur). The main dishes are about 15 to 20 zl (5, 7 eur). After arrival, you can stop by to fill your stomach before continue your journey.

From Slovakia

tatra mountains poland tourist

With typical topography is the border area of Poland and Slovakia. Therefore, you can getting here in 2 directions. One from Poland as mentioned above. If you choose Slovakia as your starting point, train will be the most convenient way to get to Poprad city (the most important transit point from the plain to the Tatra Mountains) from the capital Bratislava or Kosice city for less than 20 euros/one-way. From Kosice, you can also catch a bus to Poprad for a relatively cheap price. From Poprad, there are bus routes to mountain resorts.

Tatra guide: What to do and where to go in Tatras Poland?

tatra mountains poland tourist

Tatra is a vast and majestic national park near the Polish border with Slovakia, very close to Krakow. This park is a favorite vacation spot for Poles with many pleasant relaxing activities, and the nature is fresh, lush greenery! Moreover the price is very moderate. Very suitable for my “budget” pocket.

Thermal water parks

There is nothing better than soaking in a thermal water park in the cold season. Imagine taking a dip in the warm water while the snow falls on your head and surrounded by a backdrop of mountains covered in snow. In Tatra, there are many hot water parks such as Bialka , Bukovina (both of these parks are well-known, but they will be very crowded. You have to prepare mentally for the crowds, especially in the high season). I will recommend another park, Chocholow Termy , just opened a few years ago, the largest thermal bath in Poland, everything is brand new and the service quality is very good.

tatra mountains poland tourist

How to get to Chocholow?

Because I booked a room at MTB hostel , so getting to Chocholow is even easier, just catch the right bus with the same name as Czarny Dunajec (in the same direction up the mountain, not in the opposite direction to Zakopane) and take about 18 minutes to get there. When you get there, you will realize it right away because the bus stops right at the park gate. Or if you are not sure, you can show its name to the driver.

If you don’t depart from this hostel, you can still get to Chocholow by that bus. Or ask for more information from your hotel, usually there will be a shuttle service.

What to do in Chocholow?

tatra mountains poland tourist

Chocholow is newly built so it’s very new and very well in operation, with a wave pool, a normal swimming pool, a children’s area an and outdoor swimming pool. The water is warm and not chemically too strong. Right upstairs is the dining and bar area, very reasonable prices, not much more expensive than regular milk-bars. Your locker key watcher can also be used to get food. You grab a tray, choose foods, use the locker key watcher to record your bill and then after meal, you can pay at the door. No need to bring money or cards when bathing, very convenient.

tatra mountains poland tourist

On the second floor of Chocholow is the sauna and spa area. Sauna has a package with regular termy, while spa must be purchased separately and booked in advance. You should book early, then going to the spa, then the sauna, then bath is the best.

For more information on pricing, please visit this page .

tatra mountains poland tourist

Tatra has a lot of ski resorts. The most complete ski resort is Bialka Tatrzanska, suitable for even beginners. There are also short slides for professionals. However, this resort is located outside of Zakopane, so it is a bit difficult to reach. For those who just want to try it, you can find small resorts inside Zakopane, like Kasprowy Wierch being the most famous. Or the smaller one is Polana Szymoszka.

tatra mountains poland tourist

There are many ski schools around Zakopane, so you should take a course before joining. In Tatra, the ski season lasts from late December to early April. So if possible, avoid the peak season from late December to late February.

tatra mountains poland tourist

There are many beautiful hiking routes in Tatra. During my trip, I chose the Koscielisko valley. The difficulty of the hike is very moderate, not too difficult, even good for family. Along the way, there are majestic mountains, dense trees (in my case, white due to snow), with a stream right next to it which is very poetic. Don’t have to spend much effort, moreover, after about 2 hours of hiking, you will see a fairly large wooden house (a resting point), selling delicious soups, meals, wine, cheese, Polish dry tea… The price is also very soft.

tatra mountains poland tourist

I went in the winter with white snow, so I chose a simple hike, enjoying the atmosphere and scenery is the main purpose. However, I will be back in the spring to visit Morskie Oko Lake (Eye of the Sea in English). This lake is known as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Maybe, I will climbing Mount Rysy on the border with Slovakia too. If you go in the spring, summer, and autumn, do not miss these great spots!

tatra mountains poland tourist

Take a Horse-drawn Carriage/or Dog Sledding

In Polish, they call the horse-drawn/dog-sledding Kulig. You should try it once, especially in winter, when thick snow. Must prepare glasses and thick towels, it will be very cold. Usually, you can easily book a tour to your favorite places from the hotel. But I combined with hiking in the Koscielisko valley. I climbed up and down by myself by horse-drawn carriage.

tatra mountains poland tourist

There are two reasons why you should try a horse-drawn carriage tour in Poland:

  • Horse-drawn/dog-sledding in Poland are the traditional means of transport here, due to thick snowfall. When I was there, snow only fell for just 4 hours, but it was already thick to the calf!
  • Value for money: If you ride a horse-drawn carriage in Rome, it’s 200 euros per trip! While in Krakow, it costs about 50 euros per round for about 30 minutes. But in Tatra, it’s only about 30 euros (150zl for a four-seat car), it takes nearly an hour from halfway down the mountain to the foot of the mountain. You can also see the beautiful nature along the way, so cheap and value for money. Right?!

Krupowki Street

tatra mountains poland tourist

One of the most famous streets in the beautiful Polish town of Zakopane is Krupowki. This is also a place that you should visit when you have the opportunity to explore the Tatra Mountains. Here, visitors can find many unique restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops.

Here, visitors also can leisurely sit, relax, admire the scenery and enjoy a cup of tea and coffee at the shops located on this street. In addition, there are many shops specializing in selling souvenirs, so you can conveniently stop by to buy small and beautiful items to give to your friends and relatives after the trip.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Lake Morskie Oko

tatra mountains poland tourist

Ranked in the list of the most famous and beautiful lakes around the world for its magnificent, spectacular beauty. This place that has been included in the list of the most beautiful lakes in the world by The Wall Street Journal. The path leading to Morskie Oko is also very easy to go, whether you travel on foot or by horse-drawn carriage.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Dolina Gąsienicowa

It’s also one of the most beautiful valleys in Poland. To reach this valley, you can take a bus. Traveling from Zakopane to Kuznice by bus will be more appropriate. This is also the starting point to lead you to the Dolina Gąsienicowa valley.

Tatras Poland guie: What to eat in Tatra Poland?

In addition to the dishes that are found in every region in Poland such as dumpling, sausage and cabbage soups, stewed pig’s feet (leg)… Of course, Polish food is great.

You should try the following specialties when traveling to Tatra:

tatra mountains poland tourist

  • Smoked cheese (Oscypek): This is an extremely greasy sheep cheese, soft with wood fragrance. Smoked cheese stalls are everywhere, especially outside of thermal water parks. Tatra is home to many sheep farms, so the cheese here is both fresh and fragrant. You can even come to a specific farm to visit and try.
  • Mulled wine (Spiced wine): This is a classic drink in cold countries. But I have a traditional Polish mulled wine recipe for anyone who wants to try making it yourself. There’s nothing better than sipping mulled wine when it’s cold.
  • Bryndzové Halušky: Also known as potato noodles with sheep cheese. This is a traditional dish of… Slovakia. Very greasy, with crunchy bacon and very fragrant chive on top, not greasy at all. After eating, there is nothing better than drinking Czech-style Kofola soda.

tatra mountains poland tourist

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Zakopane, just check out Tripadvisor. The reviews are all pretty believable. However, a tip for you is to eat cheaply in Poland in general as well as in Tatra in particular, just come to milk-bars. Milkbars in Poland are subsidized by the state, similar to a cafeteria for workers. Milkbar prices are usually quite low, but most of the food is quite tasty and filling. Décor style in milkbars is also not “cheap” at all, often quite like coffee shops.

tatra mountains poland tourist

On the Slovak side, Goral (highland restaurant) restaurants serve goat cheese and energizing soups. If you are unfamiliar with these dishes, you can still find many pizzerias, fast food joints or bakeries in Poprad and the towns of the Smokovec region.

Where to stay in Tatras Mountains Poland?

In Tatra, there are many picturesque small villages, like Bialka near Bialka thermal water park, or Bukowina also near Bukowina thermal water park. Tatra in winter is extremely famous for its thermal water parks as suggested above. It’s also famous for its skiing resorts but I don’t know how to ski, so I skipped, just went to hot springs.

I chose the MTP hostel in Kościelisko in Zakopane. I know this hostel from an Uber driver in Krakow, when he drove, he happily told me. Later, he even booked a room for me. The price is very soft, you can refer here for more information. This place is extremely lovely, brings a family atmosphere, clean and comfortable, the room is just like in the picture. During my stay, looking at the white snow garden in the morning, It was completely magical. If you do not understand Polish, you can go to booking.com to book, or directly email to the hotel, in the Kontakt section. When I rented it, it was 20 euros for a double room for 2 people a night. It’s so cheap in high season. Note: check-in after 10pm will add 10 zl of service.

tatra mountains poland tourist

This village is halfway up the mountain, not in the center of Zakopane town. From the station, you have to take a bus called CZARNY DUNAJEC at platform 6, right where the buses from Krakow drop off passengers. Going to Nedzowka station, then get off (about 18 minutes by car, price 4 zl, remember to prepare coins). There is no name of the station, so before you go, you should check Google map first to know where to get off. Or show the stop name to the driver. They don’t speak English but give them its name they will let you know when come. Or just base the time, because there are very few stops there. After getting off the bus, that hostel is across the street, go deep inside, walk for 1, 2 minutes to arrive. There is a signboard outside.

Tip: If you come to Poland and stay for a long time, you should buy a domestic sim card from Orange to use. 30 zl for 15gb of data, yes, very cheap compared to Europe. Moreover, free wifi is also everywhere. On the bus, tram sometimes available, take advantage.

Bonus tip: This hotel has a sauna in the garden. If you don’t want to buy more sauna sevice at water parks, you can use it here. 30zl for 1 hour of use. Inform the hotel owner an hour before use so he can heat the room. I think 30zl is quite cheap. Sauna at the water parks is also very cure, but everyone has to be naked. They don’t mind but maybe we’re shy.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Below we recommend more best budget, mid-range and upscale hotels with good ratings and reviews you can refer to.

  • Aries Hotel & Spa Zakopane ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )
  • Mercure Kasprowy Zakopane ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )
  • Bambi Zakopane ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )
  • Hotel Aquarion ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )
  • Grand Hotel Stamary ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )
  • Belvedere Hotel ( Agoda.com or Booking.com )

tatra mountains poland tourist

Check out more top and best hotels in Zakopane Poland on Agoda.com or Booking.com .

Don’t worry about where to eat or drink. Just walk about 10, 15 minutes to the town of Koscielisko at the foot of the Koscielisko valley with many restaurants, bars, and restaurants, a bit more expensive. But you can rest assured, the prices are reasonable and the food is delectable too. Or spend an extra 4zl for a bus ride to go to Zakopane town, also various choices.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Of course, there are many other options, from budget to upscale, but I will only talk about my own experience and guarantee. I usually prefer to book through Hostelworld or Booking. Airbnb is also a great choice. Ah, but I also suggest that you consider the options at hotels with hot water pools. That’s very convenient.

Tatra guide: Getting around Tatras Poland

tatra mountains poland tourist

This is a national park of Poland (Tatra National Park Poland), so there is not much public transport. It’s almost nonexistent. The vehicles are only mini vans, with a piece of paper with the name on which direction to go (for example, going to the MTB hostel, take the bus named Czarny Dunajec and then get off at the middle of the road). If you rent room in another place, remember to ask the hotel how to get there. Or book the hotel’s pick-up service, not much more expensive. Like MTB hostel, the pick up service is 10zl.

What should you be prepared when coming here?

tatra mountains poland tourist

In addition to the basic must-have items when traveling, I suggest that you bring:

  • Hiking shoes, or comfortable athletic shoes. You should choose a waterproof type because the mountain weather is unusually easy. Or you can buy a waterproof spray in shoe shops. Back then, I climbed the mountain in the snow using a spray bottle, I hiked for 8 hours without being soaked at all, very reassuring. The valleys here are not particularly difficult and tiring to climb or hike like mount Triglav in Slovenia or Dolomites in Italy. If you don’t have hiking shoes, you can still hike. But it depends on your health.
  • Windbreaker: Old reason, unpredictable mountain weather. I used Uniqlo windbreaker, especially light and compact, good wind resistance but warm. When I climbed mount Rila in Bulgaria, it was 10 degrees Celsius and but I only needed it.
  • Energy candy bars and dry food, sweets: For precaution and quick energy recharge when needed.
  • Cash: In the mountains, you can’t swipe your card everywhere. Like taking the bus, you always have to use coins, or if you want to use the hostel’s sauna service, you also have to pay in cash.
  • Paper raincoat.

A Comprehensive Guide to Hiking in the Tatra Mountains in Poland

Hiking in the Tatra Mountains

Prepare for an adventure that’s more enchanting than a Polish polka festival – hiking in the Tatra Mountains . Imagine soaring peaks cradling emerald lakes, wildlife that wouldn’t look out of place in a Disney movie, and trails that could turn a couch potato into a mountaineer. Intrigued? Buckle up, because we’re about to dive into a journey where your hiking boots are the magic carpet.

The Allure of the Tatra Mountains

Nestled like a hidden jewel between Poland and Slovakia, the Tatra Mountains are the Rocky Mountains’ European cousin, minus the Hollywood glam but with a touch of Old World charm. They’re like the Greta Garbo of mountain ranges: timeless, mysterious, and not too crowded. For Poles, the Tatras are a symbol of national pride, akin to how Americans view their apple pie—comforting, wholesome, and best enjoyed in large portions.

Best Time to Visit

Deciding when to visit the Tatras is like picking a dessert at a Polish bakery—each option has its own sweet charm. Summer is the pièce de résistance with its balmy weather, but be prepared to share the trails with other nature enthusiasts. Autumn brings a fiery blaze of foliage and fewer people. Winter is a snowy wonderland, ideal for those who also fancy skiing. And spring? Well, it’s a season of bloom and occasional mud baths. So choose wisely, my friend.

Trail Recommendations: Your Path to Adventure

If life is a box of chocolates, then the Tatra Mountains are like a sampler platter of trails—there’s something for everyone, from the chocolate-covered cherry strollers to the caramel swirl mountaineers. Without further ado, let’s get down to the gooey center of the best hiking trails in Tatra Mountains, Poland.

Easy Trails: A Walk in the Park, Literally

  • Location : Near Zakopane; the trailhead is at the Palenica Białczańska parking lot
  • Trail Length : About 16km round-trip
  • Highlights : As the name suggests, you’ll meander past five glorious lakes. Perfect for taking it easy, breathing in that crisp mountain air, and perhaps having a lakeside picnic.
  • Why it’s Great : Ideal for families and those looking to dip their toes in the hiking pool without plunging in headfirst.
  • Location : Again, Zakopane is your jumping-off point.
  • Trail Length : Roughly 9km, round-trip
  • Highlights : A waterfall, verdant meadows, and a charming mountain hut serving hot chocolate that’ll make you forget about Swiss Miss.
  • Why it’s Great : This trail is like your favorite rom-com—short, sweet, and leaves you feeling warm inside.

Moderate Trails: Bring On the Burn, But Keep It Fun

  • Location : Trail starts from the Kiry parking lot
  • Trail Length : Around 11km round-trip
  • Highlights : A panoramic view that’s better than HD television, with fewer commercials.
  • Why it’s Great : For those who’ve graduated from the “Valley of Five Lakes” and are looking for something that offers a bit more verticality.
  • Location : Kuznice is your starting point

  • Why it’s Great : For those who love multi-tasking: hiking and country-hopping at the same time.

So, there you have it—a trail for every type of hiker out there. From the casual wanderer to the aspiring mountain goat, the Tatra Mountains have got you covered like a sturdy pair of hiking boots.

Hiking in Tatra

Your Ultimate Survival Guide: From Essential Gear to Trail Safety in the Tatra Mountains

Essential gear for hiking in the tatras.

Wondering what to pack for hiking in the Tatra Mountains? Think of your backpack as a magician’s hat: it’s got to have more than just rabbits and handkerchiefs. You’ll need good boots, all-weather clothing, and perhaps a map – because asking a mountain goat for directions may not be fruitful.

General Safety Tips: The ABCs of Staying in One Piece

  • Save the Numbers : The general emergency number is 112. But in the Tatras, the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue (GOPR) is your best friend, and their number is +48 601 100 300.
  • Portable Chargers : Keep your phone charged. Think of it as the Swiss Army knife of the 21st century; it does everything from navigation to emergency calls.
  • What to Include : Band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and some pain medication are the bare essentials.
  • Why it’s Essential : Even a minor injury can turn into a big problem when you’re miles from civilization. A first aid kit is like having a miniature hospital in your backpack.

Wildlife Precautions

  • Who You Might Meet : You could encounter deer, marmots, and yes, brown bears.
  • What to Do : Maintain a respectful distance. These animals are not auditioning for a Disney movie.
  • Just Don’t : As tempting as it may be to share your trail mix, don’t. Human food is like junk food for animals—bad for their health and behavior.

Weather Considerations

  • Check Before You Go : Forecasts in mountainous regions are as unpredictable as a toddler’s mood swings. Make it a ritual to check the weather before setting out.
  • Apps and Websites : Websites like AccuWeather or local Tatra weather sites can be lifesavers, literally.
  • Why You Need It : Rain in the Tatras can be as sneaky as a ninja. It comes out of nowhere.
  • What to Pack : A lightweight, water-resistant jacket should do the trick.

Trail Safety

  • What They Are : Different colored stripes painted on trees and rocks, which are the GPS of yesteryears.
  • How to Use Them : Follow the stripes like Dorothy followed the Yellow Brick Road. Simple.
  • Uphill vs. Downhill : The uphill hiker has the right of way, like a guest of honor at a banquet. Why? Because climbing is hard work, and we should make it a little easier for them.
  • What to Do : Step aside and give a cheerful greeting. It’s like holding the door for someone, only sweatier.

So, as you prepare for your Tatra Mountains trek, remember: safety is not just a belt to be fastened; it’s a full-on harness for the exciting ride ahead.

Getting to and Around the Tatra Mountains: Your Ticket to Adventure

So, you’re all set to embark on your epic hiking adventure in the Tatra Mountains, but you’re not exactly sure how to get there, or how to scoot around once you’ve arrived? Fear not, my intrepid traveler, we’re about to demystify the logistics like a magician revealing his secrets.

Getting to the Tatras

  • Nearest Airport : The closest international airport is Kraków John Paul II International Airport.
  • Getting to Zakopane : From Kraków, it’s about a 2-hour drive to Zakopane, the gateway to the Tatra Mountains.
  • Why it’s Convenient : This option will save you time and get you to the mountain’s base quicker than you can say, “Is my backpack too heavy?”
  • Train Options : Polish State Railways (PKP) runs regular trains from major cities like Warsaw and Kraków to Zakopane.
  • Why it’s a Good Choice : Trains offer more legroom than planes and the chance to see some of the Polish countryside. It’s like a movie marathon, only with better scenery and fewer popcorn kernels stuck in your teeth.

Local Transportation

  • What They Are : These are your workhorses for getting to most trailheads.
  • Where to Catch Them : The main bus station in Zakopane serves routes to many popular trailheads.
  • Why They’re Handy : They’re frequent, relatively cheap, and get you where you need to go without the fuss of parking a rental car.
  • What They Are : For those who prefer a more private mode of transportation.
  • Why They May Be Suitable : If you’re tackling a less-accessible trail or just value your personal space, a taxi might be your ride of choice.
  • When Applicable : Some trailheads are close enough to Zakopane to warrant a good old-fashioned walk.
  • Why It’s Not a Bad Idea : You’re here to hike, right? Consider this your warm-up.

Rental Cars

  • Seasonal Factors : During the high season, parking near popular trailheads can be as elusive as a yeti sighting.
  • Trail Hopping : If you want the freedom to switch trails on a whim, a rental car gives you that flexibility.
  • Options : Major rental companies are available at Kraków airport and in Zakopane.
  • Why It’s Convenient : Renting a car on-site means you can hit the road as soon as you’re ready, no waiting for buses or haggling with taxi drivers.

So there you have it, folks—your comprehensive guide to getting to and around the Tatra Mountains. Whether you’re a jet-setter or a train aficionado, a bus rider or a car renter, the Tatras are more accessible than a front-row seat at a village folk dance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Navigating the world of hiking in Tatra Mountains can sometimes feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded. But don’t worry, we’ve got answers to some of your burning questions.

What’s the Best Time to Visit the Tatra Mountains for Hiking?

June to September offers the best weather, but it’s also the most crowded. If you’re a fan of winter sports and don’t mind bundling up, December to February offers a different kind of mountain experience.

Are There Guided Tours Available?

Absolutely, guided tours can be an excellent way to explore without the stress of planning every single detail. They range from day hikes to multiple-day adventures. Just make sure your guide is certified; otherwise, it’s like asking a fish to teach you how to climb a tree.

How Dog-Friendly Are the Trails?

Some trails welcome our four-legged friends, but certain areas with steep cliffs or delicate ecosystems might be off-limits. Always check in advance, and bring a leash. Remember, not everyone is as enamored with Fido’s exuberance as you are.

What Kind of Footwear is Recommended?

For easier trails, a sturdy pair of running shoes might suffice. But for moderate to challenging trails, investing in a pair of high-quality hiking boots is a good idea. It’s like buying good tires for a road trip, non-negotiable and incredibly important.

Is Backcountry Camping Allowed?

Backcountry camping is generally not allowed to protect the fragile ecosystem. There are, however, plenty of mountain huts where you can bunk for the night. Think of them as the mountain’s version of a bed and breakfast, just with fewer frills and more thrills.

How Reliable Is Mobile Reception?

In most popular areas, you should get reasonable mobile coverage. However, more remote trails might leave you out of signal. It’s always a good idea to let someone know your plans and estimated return time, just like leaving a note for your roommate when you borrow their car for a “quick trip to the store.”

There you have it! Your seasonal guide to Tatra Mountains hiking, packaged with all the love and expertise you’d expect from your favorite travel guide. Now, go on, embrace your inner Edmund Hillary and conquer those peaks—but remember, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the strudels you eat along the way.

Guide to hiking the Tatra mountains in Poland

Hiking the Tatra Mountains, Poland – This year it was one of the coldest, snowiest and most whimsical May’s in decades. The trails in the Tatra mountains were still largely covered in a thick layer of snow, and there was a risk of avalanches at the higher elevations. I went to the Tatras for a spring hike, but instead I got something better: a true winter wonderland with pristine frozen lakes, snow-capped jagged peaks, and animal tracking fun in the snow. During my short solo adventure I had the opportunity to explore parts of the 300 km of hiking trails, while staying in cozy mountain huts on the way.

As always, I took some photos and notes. Here’s everything you want to know about hiking the Tatra mountains in Poland.

Hiking the Tatra mountains in Poland

Introduction to the tatra mountains.

The rugged peaks of the Tatra mountains ( Tatry in Polish) form the natural border between Poland and Slovakia. The Tatra mountains became a National Park in 1955 and was also established as an official UNESCO biosphere reserve. The park is rich in flora and fauna with flowers, pinewood trees, bears, wolfs, wild cats, and marmots. It’s the only alpine mountain range in Poland. Located only two hours by car from Krakow, the Tatra National Park is easily accessible to hikers and skiers. During my visit, I mostly met Polish hikers from Krakow, and I was kind of jealous that they live so close to the mountains!

Check out these 9 reasons why you should hike the Tatra mountains!

Hiking the Tatras in May

When to hike the Tatra mountains?

The best time to hike the Tatra mountains in Poland is from July to October when most trails are open. However, this period is also by far the busiest time, and Zakopane is completely overrun by tourists. My guide in Zakopane recommended September and early October as the best time to visit when it’s quieter. May is also a good time to visit, but some of the trails in the high Tatras may still be closed and there is a chance you end up with a bit of winter hiking or mountaineering.

In winter, Zakopane and the Tatra mountains are a perfect place for skiing. Even in May, I saw some people skiing and snowboarding of some pretty high and rugged peaks. Crazy stuff!

A three-day hike in the Tatra mountains: The Forest itinerary

During my visit, the trails in the high Tatras were still closed because of snow and avalanche risk, so I opted for this alternative route which takes you past some beautiful lower-level forested areas. It was a pleasant and easy-going hike without steep ascents or descents. In some places the snow was quite deep, which made the hike tougher. Also, quite a few paths were turned into rivers, so you had to hop from stone to stone. Really enjoyed it!!

  • Day 1: Brzeziny to Murowaniec (2,5 hours)
  • Day 2: Murowaniec to Czarny straw (lake) and back (took me about 1,5-2 hours including taking some photos). After that, I hiked from Murowaniec via Psia Trawka and Rowien Waksmundzka to Morskie Oko (6 hours).
  • Day 3: Hiked around Morskie Oko and after that to Palencia Bialczanska.

From Palencia Bialczanska, you can take a bus to Zakopane. The buses leave regularly. To get to Brzeziny, I was lucky my Zakopane guide offered me a lift. Otherwise, you can take a bus, taxi, or go hitchhiking.

A three-day hike in the Tatra mountains: the Five Lakes itinerary

I originally planned to follow this Five Lakes itinerary! However, unfortunately this route was not possible due to bad weather on day one and because some of the trails were still closed. This trail will take you through the Five Lake Valley. It’s the trail with the most beautiful scenery. It’s supposedly a medium difficult trail, but if you are in reasonably good shape and not afraid of some ladders, you should be able to do it!

Day 1: Cable car to Kasprowy Wierch, hike from Kasprowy Wierch to Murowaniec Day 2: From Murowaniec via Czarny Staw (Black lake), Zmarly Staw (Little lake), Wielki Staw (Great lake), Przedni Staw Polski (foremost Lake) to Morskie Oko Day 3: Hike around Morskie Oko and after that to Palencia Bialczanska.

One-day hikes in the Tatra mountains

There are plenty of beautiful one day hikes you can do in the Tatra mountains. Here are some of my own suggestions:

  • Take the cable car up to Kasprowy Wierch, hike to Murowaniec and then through the forest to Brzeziny
  • Take the cable car up to Kasprowy Wierch, hike to Murowaniec and Czarny Staw and then back to Kasprowy Wierch
  • Hike to/from Palencia Bielczanska to Morskie Oko. This track is partly on the main road, and there is a chance you will hike together with dozens of other tourists. If you do this trail: do it early! You can also hike around Morskie Oko and even hike to Czarny Staw.

The trails and routes in the Tatra mountains

The Tatra trails were excellently prepared with plenty of markings. At every crossing, there was a wooden signpost with directions and the number of minutes it takes to get there. Still, make sure to also bring a paper map and a GPS map.

Personally, I always use MapOut for my GPS map. It has nice graphics, also works offline, and is very accurate. Here is how to use MapsOut.

  • Download the MapOut app on your phone
  • Download the region you’re visiting in MapOut
  • In case of the Tatras in Poland, go to Mapa Turystyczna  and create your own route
  • Download the GPX file into MapOut
  • The route is now available in MapOut!

Staying in the Tatra mountain huts

Whether you only do a day hike, or a multiple day trekking in the Polish Tatra mountains, I would highly recommend to stay in a mountain hut. They are beautifully located in the middle of the mountains, very affordable, and you have a chance to explore the lakes without the day crowds. I stayed in two mountain huts: ‘ Schronisko PTTK Murowaniec ‘ and ‘ Morskie Oko ‘. I was positively surprised by the cleanliness and comfort of the rooms and shared bathrooms. Both huts have a restaurant, a small shop, reception, and electricity to charge your phone or camera. You can sleep in a dormitory or a private room. As it is a hiker’s hut, the lights go out early. The Morskie Oko mountain hut is located directly on the lake side and you can have your morning breakfast with superb views. Make sure to try a Zapiekankie (Polish pizza) in het Morskie Oko mountain hut. It’s not on the menu, but it is avalaible if you ask and absolutely delicious.

Please note that during high season, some of the mountains huts can be fully booked months in advance (especially Morskie Oko)! However, during my visit in May, most of the mountain huts still had beds available.

How to prepare for your hike in the Tatra mountains?

  • Ask about the current weather conditions in Zakopane and especially in the mountain huts. They will also know which trails are open and closed.
  • Have the number of the mountain rescue service in your phone.
  • Be prepared for all kind of weather conditions. In only three days, I experienced snow, heavy rain and strong sun!
  • Don’t underestimate the Tatra mountains . Even though plenty of hikers visit every year: it’s still the mountains!
  • Consider to bring your crampons.
  • Please note that camping is not allowed in the Tatra mountains in Poland.
  • Learn some Polish before you go!
  • This is my packing list for regular backpacking trips , which is pretty much use for every trip including this one. I will soon publish an additional mountaineering / hiking packing list.

Example costs of hiking the Tatrys

  • Bus airport to bus station Krakow: about 2 euro
  • Bus Krakow to Zakopane: 4-5 euro
  • Lenin hostel private room: 30 euro
  • Entrance Tatra National Park: 1 euro
  • Breakfast mountain hut: 4-5 euro
  • Dinner mountain hut: 5-6 euro
  • Night in mountain hut: 8-20 euro

How to get to Zakopane and to the Tatra mountains from Krakow?

By bus: As a backpacker, this is probably the easiest way to get to Zakopane. Buses leave regularly from the Krakow Glowny station. You can just show-up or book beforehand. There are several bus companies, but this one was recommend by the tourism organization: Szwagropol . It takes about 2,5 hours by bus depending on traffic and a bus ticket is about 5 euro per person.

By car: If you have your own car, it only takes about 2 hours from Krakow.

In Zakopane, you can use local buses or taxies.

Bears in Poland / Tatra National Park

Bears in Poland? While preparing for this trip, I discovered the Tatra National Park houses a small population of about 20 brown bears. They are sometimes even spotted in the city! I’m 99.9% sure I saw some bear tracks in the snow.

So, what to do if you encounter a bear (although chances are extremely small)? Here are three tips:

  • Carry bear spray (I forgot to buy some)
  • Stick to the trail and make noise on the trail.
  • Make sure you don’t leave food and keep your food packed up tight.

What to do in Zakopane?

Zakopane is the gateway town to Tatra National Park. It’s com pleasant city with lots of outdoor shops, restaurants, and guesthouses. Even if you’re not into skiing or hiking, there is plenty to do in Zakopane. You can board the Kasprowy Wierch cable car which takes you all the way up to Kasprowy Wierch at 1987 meters and offers you amazing views over the city. In high season and during some times of the day, it can be quite busy and tickets must be booked at least the day beforehand. You could also go shopping, admire the traditional architecture, or visit Zakopane’s interesting museum. Make sure to visit Koscieliska street, where you can find the most beautiful wooden houses and churches in Zakopane. If you’re looking for something quirky, you can visit the interesting upside down house.

Where to stay in Zakopane? – Goodbye Lenin Hostel

Located in the middle of the forest, there is a small wooden cabin which houses the Goodbye Lenin hostel. It’s a highly sociable place with a cozy living room perfect for playing games, reading a book, or simply talking to fellow travelers. They also have a playful cat. Only minutes after I arrived, I was already invited by fellow backpackers to join a card game.

In the Goodbye Lenin Hostel, I stayed in a private room, which was big and had a modern bathroom attached. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the heating in my room, but they tried to fix this as much as possible. Also, I found the location to be a bit out of the city, but I stayed too short to find out whether this was really a problem. If you’re a (solo) backpacker, I think this will probably be one of your favorite hostels in Poland!

The Tatra Mountains. Mountains in the heart of every Pole

Hala Gąsienicowa Tatry

Already at the beginning of the 20th century, they became an almost mythical place to which Poles from all partitions came to rest, to treat tuberculosis, to challenge the unclimbed peaks and walls, to create works of art often inspired by Tatra experiences and Podhale culture, to plot for a free Poland. Today, between 5 and 6 million people make the pilgrimage here every year.

The Tatras are divided into: the West Tatras – the highest peak is Bystra, on the Polish side Starorobociański Wierch; the High Tatras – the highest peak is Gerlach, on the Polish side Rysy; and the Belianske Tatras – the highest peak is Hawrań. The Tatra Mountains in Poland are a unique place; only here we can find a high-mountain area characterised, among other things, by wild nature and the exclusion of many areas from tourist traffic. In turn, some of the marked trails lead through demanding, often exposed terrain. According to many, anyone who visits the Tatras at least once will come back to them again and again. If you want to get to know the real beauty of the Tatra Mountains, you should plan your trip in advance. The most beautiful time to come to the mountains is September – then there are far fewer tourists than, for example, during the summer holidays. This year’s summer is absolutely record-breaking in terms of attendance on the Tatra trails. In July, 900,000 people entered the Tatra National Park – 200,000 more than in 2017. It is therefore worth planning your stay in the mountains in such a way that you can enjoy the beauty of these unique mountains in peace and quiet.

The history of Poland’s most famous alpine mountains

For many years, the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains was inaccessible and only rarely visited by people. Only flocks of sheep appeared in the Tatra clearings, and hunters ventured higher up in search of worthy prey. According to historical sources, animal herding and Wallachian culture have been present here only since the 13th century. The industrial development of the Zakopane area was mainly metallurgy. This industry, mainly furnaces located in today’s Kuźnice, left its mark on the nature of the mountains. It was the wanton felling of trees that caused the uniform spruce forests to replace the mixed forests. The Tatra National Park is currently trying to restore the former balance of species as part of the so-called stand reconstruction. This is done by, among other things, planting deciduous trees where possible.

At the turn of the 18th and 19th century, the Tatra Mountains became an attractive tourist region. The main contributor to this popularity was Dr Tytus Chałubiński, a doctor from Warsaw, who, enchanted by the beauty of the mountains, promoted recreation in the ‘Polish Alps’. Today, the place is still unique in many respects, not least in terms of its wildlife. Among others, brown bears, Tatra chamois and marmots – species under strict protection – live here in their natural environment. Other extremely valuable species are wolves, lynxes, and eagles, whose nests are located precisely in the high mountain zone.

A bit of topography – peaks that every tourist simply must know

There are many famous peaks in the Tatras – the most recognisable are: Rysy, Mięguszowiecki Grand Peak (Mięguszowiecki Szczyt Wielki), Kasper Peak (Kasprowy Wierch), Świnica, Red Peaks (Czerwone Wierchy) and Wołowiec. Next on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains are Mnich and Kościelec, Kominiarski Wierch and the most popular, most characteristic peak perfectly visible from Zakopane Giewont – with the legendary steel cross put up years ago by the highlanders. It is worth mentioning that the highest peak of the Tatra Mountains is Gerlach, 2,655 metres a.s.l., located completely on the Slovakian side, and on the Polish side, the north-western peak of Rysy, 2,499 metres a.s.l., with the Polish-Slovakian border running through it.

Tourism in the Tatra National Park

In terms of tourism, the Tatras are also one of the most beautiful corners of Poland. They attract crowds of tourists from Poland and abroad every year. They are one of the most visited regions in the country thanks to the sustained number of tourists in recent years – 3 million per year. Visitors to the Tatra National Park can take advantage of 275 kilometres of marked hiking trails of varying difficulty: from very easy to very difficult and equipped with safety devices such as chains, buckles and ladders. The trails can be hiked individually or with a guide; however, organised groups and trips involving schoolchildren must be led by authorised Tatra guides. Most hiking trails are two-way. There are only some sections with one-way traffic, where specific rules have been introduced to improve the comfort of movement and increase safety. Tourist routes are marked. Five colours are used: black, red, green, blue, and yellow. The colours do not indicate the difficulty of the trail, but only serve to identify the trail in the field. Terrain conditions often prevent signs from being placed along a section of the trail, but those are usually very short. Before each hike, however, it is advisable to familiarise yourself with the route of the trails you intend to hike from a map or guidebook, and to take these publications with you. A wide selection of publications on the Tatra National Park is offered by the park’s Tourist Information Centres.

Practical information for those going to the Tatras

Hiking trails in the Tatras are marked by direction signs, usually located at the beginning and at the end, but also at trail junctions. Directional signs show the name of the destination and the time needed to get there. Please note that the time given on the direction indicator may increase in the case of long rests on the route as well as deteriorating weather conditions.

There is a fee for entry to the Tatra National Park : a regular ticket currently costs PLN 7 and a discounted ticket costs PLN 3.50. Tickets can be purchased electronically on the Tatra National Park website, www.tpn.pl, and directly at the entrance to the trails at points of sale. It is worth remembering that cycling is only possible on selected trails in the Polish Tatra Mountains – e.g., it is possible in the Chochołowska Valley. Bicycles can be rented in numerous rental shops at the entrance to this Tatra valley. Lovers of hiking with their four-legged friends must remember that, with few exceptions (including the Chochołowska Valley), bringing dogs into the TPN area is prohibited due to the protection of wild animals.

At most entrances to the trails, there are paid private car parks for motorised tourists. Those going to Morskie Oko and wishing to leave their car on Palenica Białczańska must purchase a space for their vehicle in advance via www.tpn.pl. Cars left in unauthorised places and in a way that blocks traffic are towed by the police and road service.

High-mountain trail, for eagles only

The most demanding route is the legendary Eagle’s Path (Orla Perć), which leads along the ridge of many peaks. In many places, the safety of tourists is further enhanced by artificial safeguards. It is also possible to use the so-called auto-belay if the tourist is appropriately equipped in advance. Contrary to appearances, considerable skills, equipment and experience are also required from tourists on the Rysy trail, which is covered with snow and ice for most of the year in many sections. In addition to the difficult trails, there are also places of equal beauty, but much easier and safer.

Places to stay in the Tatras

On the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains in the area of the Tatra National Park there are currently eight tourist hostels that belong to the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK). According to park regulations, these are the only places in the Polish Tatras where tourists can stay overnight. The most popular hostel is located at Morskie Oko Lake , others include the hostel in the Roztoka Valley in the Valley of Five Polish Lakes , Murowaniec on Hala Gąsienicowa, Mountain Hotel on Kalatówki, a small one on Hala Kondratowa , on Hala Ornak in the Kościeliska Valley and in the Chochołowska Valley . Please note that, especially in the tourist season, accommodation in practically all hostels should be booked well in advance. In selected facilities, such as the Five Polish Lakes Valley hostel in the so-called high season, accommodation must be booked even six months in advance. In principle, all hostels have basic standard rooms for a smaller or larger numbers of people. They also have kitchens that serve hot drinks and meals at specific times.

Tatra mountains for beginners the most beautiful Polish valleys

The most charming Tatra valleys are Dolina Chochołowska, Kościeliska and Mała Łąka. Other Tatra valleys include the Bystra, Sucha Woda (Dry Water), Valley of Five Polish Lakes, and Fish Brook (Rybi Potok) Valleys. The place most frequently visited by tourists, however, remains Morskie Oko Lake – the largest (approx. 35 ha) and one of the most famous lakes in the Tatra Mountains. The lake is situated in the upper parts of the Rybi Potok Valley, which is part of the walna (one that runs from the foot of the mountains to the main ridge) Białka Valley. During the season, the road to Morskie Oko Lake, which is also accessible for disabled people, is travelled by more than 10,000 people a day. The other Tatra valleys we mentioned are only slightly less popular. The Chochołowska and Kościeliska Valleys are also available for cycling enthusiasts.

Tatra caves and lakes

Some of the Tatra caves are also open for tourists, where maximum care has been taken to ensure the safety of visitors. It is worth mentioning here that the lakes in the Tatra Mountains are traditionally called ponds and there are almost 200 of them in the whole area. The largest is of course Morskie Oko (Marine Eye) with an area of almost 35 hectares, not much smaller is Wielki Staw Polski (Great Polish Pond) or Smreczyński Staw (Pond) in the Western Tatra Mountains. Streams and brooks of various sizes flow through almost all the Tatra valleys. They are generally short in length, not exceeding 15 kilometres, and have a steep gradient (up to 20 per cent in the main streams and over 40 per cent in the tributaries). The flow of water is generally turbulent, rapid, and there is often a partial channel shift after floods. The total length of permanent surface watercourses in the Polish part of the Tatras is about 175 km; in the Slovak Tatras, it is more than five times longer. The volume of flowing water is highly dependent on rainfall recharge. For example, Potok Chochołowski flows along the bottom of the largest walna valley in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. The total length of the creek within the Tatras is 8.86 km. On its way through the Tatra Mountains, it crosses almost all types of rocks building the Tatra massif. In the southern areas, the stream flows along traces of glacial activity. Where the stream bed crosses limestone rocks, some of the water is lost in karst ponors, only to emerge in Wywierzysko Chochołowskie a dozen or so hours later. There is also a large number of waterfalls in the Tatra Mountains, although most of them remain nameless due to their small size. Many are not visible from hiking trails and are known only to a few. The most frequently associated waterfalls in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains are Wielka Siklawa and Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza on the Roztoka stream. Wielka Siklawa is the largest waterfall in Poland. Walking from Morskie Oko to Czarny Staw pod Rysami, we can also see the Czarnostawiańska Siklawa – a beautiful, cascading waterfall falling from the threshold of the Czarnostawiański Kocioł in the Rybi Potok Valley, above Morskie Oko. Another phenomenal waterfall in the Polish West Tatras is the Siklawica. It is located in the upper part of Strążyska Valley, under the northern wall of Giewont, falling from two almost vertical walls.

The world of plants and animals

It is estimated that there are about 1,300 plant species in the Tatra Mountains 200 of which can only be found in this mountain range. In addition, the Tatra flora is very diverse and during one trip, you can encounter many vegetation communities differing in composition. Some of the interesting Tatra plants include edelweiss, Martagon lily, stemless carline thistle, giant crocus, and Norwegian angelica. In turn, the animal-filled world of the forests resembles the original lowland fauna, with species such as roe deer, red deer, fox, badger, lynx, and brown bear. The birds include the golden eagle, eagle owl, capercaillie, and hazel grouse. Among the fish, you can find brook trout. Higher up, there are species for which the Tatras are famous: the chamois and the marmot.

In the footsteps of Andrzej Bargiel

In winter, on the other hand, the ski slopes in the Kasprowy Wierch area are open. Here you can get to the top all year round via one of the biggest attractions – the cable car . Chairlifts operate in Goryczkowy and Gąsienicowy cirques, where ski trails are located. The Polish Tatra Mountains in winter also offer the possibility of ski touring. This is done along designated official hiking trails, with few exceptions. The period of the pandemic caused the number of skiers practising this winter activity to increase several-fold. Depending on your skills, you will find a route that suits you. Of course, it should be added that winter tourism is associated with certain dangers, such as the risk of avalanche. Everyone setting off to the Tatra Mountains in winter should have an avalanche kit, the ability to use it and, most importantly, the knowledge and experience of being in a high mountain zone. After all, this is where Andrzej Bargiel – who is currently making solo descents from the highest Himalayan peaks – took his first steps.

Walls and caves

The Tatras are also a favourite place for seasoned mountaineering thrill seekers. It is here that you will find many legendary walls of varying difficulty. In their area there are climbing routes, cave that have still not been fully explored, and outstandingly difficult ski slopes. Mountaineering can be practised in designated areas covering the walls from the foothills to the ridge or the summit. The vast majority of areas available for mountaineering are in the High Tatras, i.e., in the Fish Brook and Five Polish Lakes Valleys as well as Hala Gąsienicowa. Detailed maps of the accessible places and walls can be found in the Tatra National Park. The areas accessible for mountaineering in the High Tatras are situated in the belt of crystalline rocks, mainly granites. In the West Tatras, on the other hand, the areas available for mountaineering are mostly limestone.

Cave-climbing in the Tatra National Park can be practised only in accessible caves. Several dozens of the caves, out of about 800 cave sites, are accessible for mountaineers – the total length of their corridors is 58 kilometres, which makes for 50 percent of the length of all the caves. The caves available for tourists include Mroźna, False (Mylna) , Raptawicka , Obłazkowa , and Dragon’s Den (Smocza Jama) . Others are accessible only to cave climbers.

The Tatras are full of magical, mysterious places. Many of them are shrouded in legends, having their origins in the history of the exploration of this part of Poland. The highlander culture also has a great influence on the uniqueness of the region, which is one of the most distinctive in Poland. Numerous legends tell stories about Morskie Oko – according to some of them, this Tatra pond is connected with the sea. Other stories report that there are sunken treasures at its bottom. However, there are also true stories connected with the Tatra Mountains, although often little-known. Few people know that a uranium mine operated here, albeit only for a short time.

Bringing help

The Tatra Mountains Volunteer Search and Rescue Service (Tatrzańskie Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe) provides help to people injured in accidents and incidents in the Tatra Mountains. Rescue and assistance are provided free of charge in Poland.

Emergency telephone number +48 601 100 300.

However, you have to remember that in case of crossing to the Slovak side of the Tatras, the rescue actions carried out by the Horská Zachrana Service are paid, and in order to avoid high costs of rescue actions, it is necessary to buy appropriate mountain equipment.

How to be safe in the Tatra Mountains?

#ComingBackIsWhatMatters

The Małopolska Tourist Organisation has prepared the #NajważniejszeWrócić (#ComingBackIsWhatMatters) campaign – a series of educational films about the dangers that await each of us during our mountain hikes. Together with the Tatra Mountains Volunteer Search and Rescue Service a series of films promoting safe behaviour for every true tourist was created. Planning trips, checking the weather forecast, and matching the route to our abilities is essential. Don’t forget the right shoes, clothing, and necessary equipment, as well as most importantly, knowledge and skills.

Tatra Mountains

Tatra, the highest mountain range in polish territory, including highest massif in Carpathian chain. It counts as much as 60 km in lenght and from 15 to 20 km width. The whole area covers around 800 km². Because of its landform, Tatra mountains are divided into Bielskie Tatras (Hawrań 2152 m above sea level), High Tatras (Gerlach 2655 m above sea level.) and West Tatras (Bystra 2248 above sea level). Located between four geo-historical lands: Liptow, Orawa, Podhale and Spisz, while through Tatra, Orawa and Spisz goes polish-slovak border. Poland owns 175 km² of Tatra surface. Its protected by two national parks (Tatrzański Park Narodowy, TPN in Poland and Tatranský národný park, TANAP in Slovakia).

Tatra mountains are exceptional for many reasons: natural, historical, cultural. They have much peculiar exploration history and unchanging popularity both among tourists and explorers. Trails layout from Tatra National Park counts 275 km. You can practice both walking, climbing, skiing (downhill, cross-country, skitour) as well as restricted mountain biking. Guests can make use of mountain shelters of PTTK (on Chochołowska Clearing, Ornak Hall, Kondratowa Hall, Gąsienicowa Hall, Roztoka, Valley of Five Ponds and on Morskie Oko). Thanks to the cultural sheep pasturage program, tourists can taste original oscypkis and drink zéntyca (sheep milk whey). They can also hear genuine podhale highlander dialect and see them in their regional outfits. Tatra area is also important because of its historical perspective. Couriers have slipped through its green border during World War II. Mountain-climbing and tourism was born and evolved here. Many have lost their lives hiking or saving others. Mountains inspired numerous artists - i.a. Painters (Jan Nepomucen Głowacki, Stanisław Witkiewicz, Rafał Malczewski and others), poets (Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer, Jan Kasprowicz, Adam Asnyk and others), photographers (Mieczysław Karłowicz, Adam Brzoza and others).

We cordially invite you to see the most beautiful region in Poland.

A Hiker's Guide to the Tatra Mountains

Peaks above the Valley of Five Lakes

Under two hours by car from the historic city of Krakow , visitors to Poland will find the rugged peaks of the High Tatra mountains. They rise against the southern plains of the country in a sudden bulwark of chiselled granite, soaring to snow-topped pinnacles. It’s these great massifs that have made skiing in Poland such a popular activity during the winter. But when the warmer months come around and the meadows bloom with alpine flowers, it’s the hiking trails that take centre stage.

Where to go to hike the tatra mountains.

Mark the town of Zakopane on the map. Hailed as the winter capital of Poland, this small city between the valleys of the Tatras is the base point for most all of the best hikes in the region. It’s easy to get to. Regular buses and trains depart from Krakow’s main station every 15 minutes, taking two hours by road and just over three by rail. Beware of major holiday periods and weekends in the high summer. Hiking in the Tatras is one of the most popular summertime activities for Polish folk in the south, and the traffic can get pretty hefty during the peak season.

Taking your first steps into the Polish Tatras

Perhaps the single best thing about the Tatra Mountains is just how accessible they are. Compared to the more technical summits and treks of Slovakia’s Carpathians just over the border, this stretch of peaks has plenty for every type of walker.

Of course, getting the right equipment is essential. This will naturally depend on the sort of walk you want to do. In the summer, most of the trails can be conquered with just a sturdy set of boots and a walking stick. However, there are some more challenging sections that, if you chose to head their way, might just require harnesses and ropes. For the late summer, winter and early spring, it’s wise to consider taking crampons for the high-altitude trails. In short, just be sure to check ahead and see what gear you’re likely to need for the routes you’re looking at doing.

Valley out of Kuznice

Trails in the Tatras

There are countless trekking trails crisscrossing through the Polish Tatra Mountains, far too many to address in one single article. Before setting out on an adventure in the Slavic hills, it would be wise to get a local trail map. This will have all the marked routes across the mountains on it, and provide helpful timing estimations for each.

The same valley in winter!

For beginner walkers, a popular choice is the easy route to the beautiful lake of Morskie Oko . This veritable wonder of Zakopane can be reached on a really well maintained tarmac path that goes from the base station of Palenica Białczańska to the alpine waters above. Some travelers will even ride local horse and carts some of the way. In all, the trek takes six hours, and it’s recommended to start as early as possible because the route gets busy during the summer.

Medium treks

A slightly more challenging walk is the one that goes deep into the forest of Dolina Strazyska. In the shadow of one of Zakopane’s most iconic peaks, the Giewont, this trek weaves past babbling rivers and occasionally opens out onto hidden little plateaus beneath the high Tatras. One section of the walk is even accessible in winter, when the winding ascent is powdered with snow. You’ll also get the opportunity to diverge off to summit the mighty peak of Giewont itself (only open in summer), but be prepared for some scrambling and chain sections if you do that!

Lake in the High Tatras

One of the harder treks in the Polish Tatras goes through the impossibly beautiful fir dressed valleys south out of Kuznice village. Walkers begin their trek at the base station of the great Kasprowy cable car and stroll past alpine farmer huts. Then it’s up the hairpin paths and to the col of Kasprowy itself. Finally, you’ll come out into the gorgeous Valley of Five Lakes (you can guess what’s there!) and face the steep scramble to the top summit of Kasprowy. It’s then possible to add on sections along the narrow ridge that defines the Polish border with Slovakia. Just be sure to leave yourself enough time if you want to do that!

Hiking Trails in the Tatra Mountains

Hiking is one of the most popular activities for many tourists coming to the Tatra Mountains. No matter if you’re an experienced mountaineer or you’re only taking your first steps in hiking, in the Tatra Mountains there are trails for pretty much anyone. In this article, you will be able to read about some of the most popular hiking trails in the Tatra Mountains.

Koscieliska Valley – Smreczynski Pond

While wandering through the Koscieliska, it’s worth dedicating an additional hour for a visit at the Smreczynski Pond. You can get there by following the black sign from the mountain shelter in the Ornak hall.

You can begin this route at Kiry – one of the districts of the town of Koscielisko, which is a popular starting point for hikes through the Koscieliska Valley. You can get from Kiry to the Koscieliska Valley in aproximately 20 minutes, and after that, you can continue your hike to the shelter in the Ornak mountain hall, which will last about 1 hour. And from there, you can get to the Smreczynski Pond in approximately 30 minutes. The return to Koscielisko should last about 1 hour 35 minutes.

The Koscieliska Valley is one of the most popular places in the Tatra Mountains, located to the west from Zakopane. It is the second largest valley in the Tatra Mountains.

Koscielisko – Droga pod Reglami – Przyslop Mietusi

Droga pod Reglami is an interesting trail which connects the outlets of several valleys from Kuznice to Siwa Polana in the Chocholowska Valley.

The route through Droga pod Reglami is approximately 9.3 kilometers long, and it takes about 3 hours to conquer it. It is an excellent idea for both walking and cycling tourists. If you’re considering a walk with a stroller, first you must check if its wheels are adapted for off-road riding. Although this path is wide and comfortable, it is also rugged and quite bumpy.

From Droga pod Reglami you can continue your trip through Przyslop Mietusi. It is a creek between peaks, which divide two valleys – the Koscieliska Valley and the Mala Laka Valley.

This creek is occupied by the Mietusia Glade. Przyslop Mietusi is famous for gorgeous views. Tourists can admire Giewont, Konczysty Wierch and Kominiarski Wierch, among others. The name of the creek comes from the word „prislop”, which means „creek”, or „notch” in the language of Wallachians.

Chocholowska Valley – Grzes – Rakon

Grzes is an easily accessible observation point, which is very popular because of the marvelous views extending from the top. This peak can be an excellent supplement for a tour from the Chocholowska Valley. After reaching the mountain shelter in the Chocholowska Valley, you can continue going up for 1 hour and 30 minutes, if you follow the yellow trail. Grzes is especially recommended for those, who would like to test their skills on a longer, yet relatively easy route.

If you’re a person with better physical condition, you can extend your trip by 2 hours and 30 minutes to conquer the Rakon peak, and even reach Wolowiec.

The time of the entire trip varies depending on the length of the route. The shorter version lasts approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes both ways (from the Chocholowska Glade Shelter), or 6 hours and 15 minutes (from the Siwa Glade)

Meanwhile, the longer version of the route can last approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes (from the shelter in the Chocholowska Glade) or 8 hours and 10 minutes (from the Siwa Glade).

Rusinowa Glade – Gesia Szyja

A trip to Gesia Szyja through the Rusinowa Glade is incredibly beautiful because of the spectacular panorama of the Tatra Mountains. Many famous people were delighted with the beauty of this area, including Tytus Chalubinski, who promoted its panorama as „a view at 100 peaks and notches”.

The easiest way to get to the Rusinowa Glade is from Wierch Poronca (1 hour and 15 minutes) or from Zazadnia (1 hour and 15 minutes).

You can get from the Rusinowa Glade to Gesia Szyja in approximately 50 minutes. Once you get to Gesia Szyja, you can extend your trip and go to Wiktorowki – the famous Sanctuary of Our Lady of Jaworzyna, Queen of the Tatra Mountains, which is located by the blue trail from Zazadnia to the Rusinowa Glade.

Kuznice – Kasprowy Wierch

The hiking trail from Kuznice to Kasprowy Wierch is one of the easiest trails in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. To get through this trail, you must follow the green trail for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. You can begin your journey in the town of Kuznice. The first part of the hike lasts 1 hour and leads to Myslenickie Turnie, where you can stop for a short break, and after that, you will continue your hike for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, until you get to Kasprowy Wierch.

You can begin your hike by following the path that is perpendicular to the track of the funicular railway, which is easy to reach from the stopping point for the buses, but you should be careful not to deviate from the green trail and turn left at the very first crossroads.

Morskie Oko – Szpiglasowy Wierch – Five Polish Ponds Valley

The route to the Szpiglasowa Creek and Szpiglasowy Wierch is one of the greatest and most popular hiking trails in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. From the top extends one of the most gorgeous panoramas at the Tatra Mountains, but apart from that, you will also be able to see Rysy and almost the entire range of the High Tatras.

When you’re planning a hike on this route, you should keep in mind, that the approach from the side of the Five Polish Ponds Valley is more difficult. You take off following the harder trail and return following the easier one. Apart from that, if you go to Morskie Oko following the so-called „ceprostrada”, it might be quite monotonous and boring.

The entire route is approximately 25 kilometers long, and it takes approximately 8 hours and 45 minutes to get through it.

We stayed at the luxurious Villa Gorsky . It was absolutely gorgeous! The house is huge and it was perfect for us and our family. Even though we were a group of 15 people, we had plenty of space. Nice post. I hope to get there next year!

You will definitely love it!

Oh! you must have had a wonderful experience there. May be I’ll visit there this Christmas. Hope so 🙂

Looks like an interesting Hill-station to give a visit. Any food specialties there?

Oscypki with cranberries are a must try!

Zakopane sounds like the real deal. Nice article, easy to read does not hit one in the face with blocks of text. Honestly, blogs like this one are the only way some of us get to travel, anyway. Keep up the nice job.

Great Post! Zakopane is a beautiful town in Poland. It’s a popular departure point for winter sports and summertime mountain climbing and hiking. May be I’ll visit there soon.

Move over Krakow! Zacopane looks like the next must see in Poland – Awesome article guys, and thanks for sharing your adventure!

Wow the photos are breath taking and i think this is probably the perfect place to go if you want to get lost in your thoughts or just be inspired.

Lovely just what I was searching for.

Glad that we could help 🙂

We are visiting Zakopane by car from Krakow, with it being a couple of hours away, what is the best time to leave krakow? As I know how busy it can get in Zakopane. We are visiting early March.

Great info on Zakopane.

Thanks for your comment, Louise. March is not as crowded as January and February, as the school holidays are over. So if it’s a weekday, it probably won’t be crowded at all. Depending on the weather, you may encounter some traffic during the weekend. What day are you planning to travel to Zakopane? – during the weekdays, you can leave anytime you want – on Saturday, there may be some traffic in the morning but it should be fine afterward – going back from Zakopane to Krakow on Sunday afternoon/evening may not be a good idea; it’s the time where the traffic is the highest

Hope it helps!

Good evening! Can you tell me please which hiking trails I can mix to see more in a such beautiful place and not to waste time on coming back to hotel and next day go back in the same destination)?

Hi Liliia! Sure, I will be happy to help. Do you want stay overnight in the mountains, is that your question? 🙂

I see! Here is one route where you can spend a night in the mountains: Kuźnice – Schronisko Murowaniec (overnight) – Kasprowy Wierch – Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką – Hala Kondratowa – Kuźnice

If you want, you can also take a full 4-day mountainous trip: DAY 1 Chocholowska Valley to Ornak, overnight at PTTK Ornak. DAY 2 Hala Ornak to Murowaniec, overnight at PTTK Murowaniec. DAY 3 Murowaniec to Dolina Pieciu Stawow, overnight at PTTK Dolina Pięciu Stawów (the highest mountain hostel in Polish Tatra Mountains) DAY 4 Dolina Pieciu Stawow to Morskie Oko and Palenica Bialczanska

4 days in the mountains, one day in Zakopane. Perfect for your April trip to the Tatra Mountains. Be sure to check the weather and prepare for the changing conditions, always adjust your plan to the current circumstances.

You can choose Krakow but you'll waste quite a lot of valuable time on commuting.

If you wish to see a beautiful mountainscape from your window and stay close to trailheads, then consider staying in one of the below Tatra Mountains resorts.

Now, let's make your vacations delightful by choosing the best location for you to stay in the Tatra Mountains.

TATRA MOUNTAINS POLAND

You're probably planning to visit several places in south Poland  - great idea! It's the most interesting part of the country and there are lots of beautiful and meaningful towns and mountains .

Let's have a look at the best places to stay in Tatras.

View of Zakopane in Poland

One of the most famous Tatra Mountains' resorts.

Is Zakopane worth visiting?

Yes, but not in the summer.

In July and August, the Tatra Mountains along with all the nearby resorts are brimming with travelers.

Nowadays, Zakopane is probably the most famous place in Poland. It's close to trailheads and ski slopes and full of non-hiking attractions.

Its fantastic location attracts many tourists. If you have no other option and plan on visiting Zakopane in the summer, book your stay well in advance .

You may check more detailed info about this famous Polish mountain resort  here .

Here are my suggestions for hotels in Zakopane. I've checked the ratings, reviews, and location and read about the amenities each hotel offers.

There are also lots of fun waterparks .

On the other hand, prices in Slovakia are a bit higher than in Poland - we Poles still have PLN currency, whereas in Slovakia you pay with Euros.

Tatra Mountains: skiing

chopok cable car

If you'd like to try skiing in Tatra Mountains, then you can practically choose whichever mountain resort - they all have good ski infrastructure.

In the High Tatras, prices of ski passes are quite similar to European ski resorts in the West but in Western Tatras or Low Tatras, skiing is cheaper.

We usually go skiing in Poland. It's relatively cheap in the Beskidy Mountains  - my favourite are  Szczyrk ski resort  and Białka Tatrzańska in south Poland.

I've tried skiing only in the below Tatra mountain resorts:

  • Chopok ski resort - Low Tatras
  • Tatranska Lomnica ski resort - High Tatras

Weather in Tatra Mountains

poland tatra national park

One thing's sure - it's unpredictable.

You can expect snowfall in September or ice on a trail in June. Storms come quickly and are violent, especially in August. The weather may change in the blink of an eye.

It happens often that it's sunny and warm in the valleys but up in the mountains above 2000 metres, it's cold, cloudy and windy.

If you wish to learn more about Tatra Mountains weather, have a look at this post .

25 Fascinating Facts About the Tatra Mountains You Didn’t Know For Sure

Lukasz

  • TATRA MOUNTAINS

You might think that with so many tourists exploring the trails, the Tatra Mountains’ secrets have all been revealed. But let me say, there’s so much more to discover in this southern edge of Poland than what you’d find in a typical tourist guide. I’ve compiled a list of some lesser-known amazing facts about the Tatra Mountains to surprise and delight you!

tatra mountains poland tourist

A Few Intriguing Facts to Start With

  • Many people believe that the name „Tatras” likely originates from the Old Slavonic word „ter,” meaning a rock or cliff, or from the Galician „tertaro,” which refers to a hill.
  • If you want to pitch a tent in the Slovak Tatras , there’s only one place to do it – at the camp in Polana pod Wysoka ( Google Map Location ). Just remember to report it in advance and pay the fee to the forester.
  • The largest (not the highest) waterfall in the Tatras is Siklawa (approximately 70m), cascading from the threshold of the Valley of Five Polish Ponds .
  • The highest waterfall in the Tatra Mountains is Ciezka Siklawa, standing at about 100m tall and located on the Slovak side.
  • The largest lake in the entire Tatras is Morskie Oko , with an area of 34.54 hectares. The deepest, however, is Wielki Staw Polski, plunging 79.3 meters deep.
  • The first recorded ascent of Rysy took place on July 30, 1840, by Eduard Blásy and his guide Ján Ruman Driečny the Elder.
  • I can tell you that 10,000 years ago, glaciers graced the Tatra Mountains.
  • The formation of the Tatra Mountains began a whopping 200 million years ago .
  • I believe it’s worth mentioning that the highest peak located entirely in Poland is Kozi Wierch, reaching 2,291 meters.
  • Lastly, the Staroleśna Valley boasts the largest number of lakes in the Tatras, with 27 of them! The Gąsienicowa Valley takes second place, home to 21 lakes.

The Tatra Mountains’ Lesser-Known Stories

Now that you’ve learned some fascinating facts about the Tatra Mountains, let’s dive deeper into a few lesser-known stories that make this region even more captivating!

1. The Deadly Halny Wind

Halny is a warm, dry, and gusty wind that blows from the peaks of the Tatra Mountains towards the valleys during spring and autumn. This wind is infamous for ripping off roofs, breaking trees, and having a huge impact on human well-being due to rapid changes in air pressure. It can cause insomnia, headaches, and even increase aggression and negative emotions.

In May 1968, this wind reached a staggering speed of 288 kilometers per hour and was known to hurl stones larger than a fist!

2. The Republic of Zakopane

As World War I came to an end, the Austro-Hungarians started losing control over the Polish lands they had occupied. This included Zakopane and the surrounding areas. On October 13, 1918, the independent Republic of Zakopane was established at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, led by the writr Stefan Żeromski . This tiny republic only lasted for 35 days before being incorporated into the Second Republic of Poland.

3. Luxtorpeda – The Legendary Train

The Luxtorpeda (Lux-Torpedo) was a legendary diesel rail bus with aerodynamic shapes that broke speed records in the Second Poland’s Republic. Running between Krakow and Zakopane, it covered the distance in just 2 hours and 18 minutes ! Today, that same train journey takes almost twice as long. Check this out below:

tatra mountains poland tourist

4. Tatra Races – A Love for Motorization

During the Second Polish Republic, from 1927 to 1931, international car races were held on the road from Łysa Polana to Włosienica. Hundreds of cars sped along the seven-kilometer route with 54 corners. It was during this time that the highlanders fell so deeply in love with motorization that they began naming their horses after famous car brands like Bugatti, Lancia, or Alfa Romeo .

5. Gold Mines in the Mountains

tatra mountains poland tourist

In the 15th century, gold mines operated on the southern slopes of Kryvan . These mines featured adits and stone buildings where miners lived. However, mining ceased at the end of the 18th century due to the depletion of the deposit. So, if you’re hiking the Krynów trail today, don’t count on finding a gold nugget along the way.

6. The Mysterious Uranium Tunnels

tatra mountains poland tourist

Gold wasn’t the only mineral sought after in the Tatras. If you take a walk around the Białego Valley, you’ll see barred entrances to two adits that were dug up in the 1950s . During that time, there was an intense arms race between the West and the Soviets.

I encourage you to read this article too: How Did Poland Change After World War II

The Soviet army hoped to find uranium in the Tatra Mountains, needed for the production of nuclear weapons. The Soviet army carried out the work and restricted access to the valley. However, they never found any uranium—or at least that’s the official version…

7. The Incredible View from the Tatra Mountains

It’s a myth that in exceptionally favorable weather, you can see the Baltic coast from the highest peaks of the Tatras. But what can you really see? Babia Góra (50 kilometers away) is a common sight, and less often Szyndzielnia (120 kilometers). The record achievement is usually considered to be when employees at the meteorological observatory on Kasprowy Wierchy saw the Sudeten Pradziad, 240 kilometers away .

For more information about stunning places in Tatras, check this: The Beauty of the Tatra Mountains – 20 Best Hiking Trails

8. The Mysterious Mountain Specter

tatra mountains poland tourist

The Brocken specter is an optical phenomenon where you see your own shadow on a cloud below you, enlarged and surrounded by a rainbow halo. It’s named after the Brocken peak in the Harz Mountains, where Johann Esaias Silberschlag first observed and described it in the 18th century. Climbers created a superstition that seeing a ghost is an omen of death in the mountains . However, if someone encounters this phenomenon three times, they’re said to be safe from harm in the mountains.

9. The Tatra Ski Jumps

There are currently five ski jumps under the Tatra Mountains, all located next to each other: Wielka Krokiew, Medium Krokiew, Little Krokiew, Little Krokiew, and the even smaller Adam, where children train. However, there used to be more Tatra ski jumps built in different places, such as Jaworzynka Valley, Polana Kalatówki, Wyżnia Kira Miętusia, the Valley of Five Polish Ponds, Kasprowy Wierch, and Hala Kondratowa. Only on the last facility could skiers fly up to fifty meters . The others were considered „children’s” hills by today’s standards.

10. The Unpopular Lenin Trail

In 1913, the future leader of Soviet Russia, Lenin, lived with his wife in Biały Dunajec . He was already active in politics, in contact with communists from various countries, and enjoyed hiking in the Tatra Mountains. In his memory, the Lenin Trail was created during the People’s Republic of Poland. The trail led from Kuźnice through Boczań, Hala Gąsienicowa, Zawrat, the Valley of Five Polish Ponds, and Morskie Oko. However, the name did not catch on and mountaineers and highlanders stubbornly destroyed the Leninist markings.

Did You Know That Chamois Favor the Slovak Side?

The Tatra chamois is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Tatra Mountains, found on both the Polish and Slovak sides. This elusive animal even graces the coat of arms of the Tatra National Park. However, chamois are an endangered species—just a few decades ago, their population was below 500.

tatra mountains poland tourist

Thankfully, efforts by naturalists over the years have significantly contributed to the gradual renewal of the chamois population. In 2017, there were 1,232 chamois in the Tatra Mountains—though this was slightly less than in previous years. It’s worth mentioning that Polish and Slovak mountaineers have been working together to monitor the Tatra chamois population since 1957.

Interestingly, even though animals don’t recognize borders and move freely between the two sides, the Slovak side seems to be the preferred habitat. In 2017, 746 chamois were counted in the Slovak Tatras, while only 296 were found on the Polish side. Similarly, bears living in the Tatras also favor the Slovak side, with around 30 bears calling it home.

Slovak Shelters and the Ingenuity of Porters

While Poland may have the edge in terms of technology, such as mechanized vehicles and freight lifts for servicing Tatra shelters, the Slovak side has a unique solution to supply their shelters. The Slovak shelters are typically located at higher altitudes, making it difficult for vehicles to reach them.

So, how do Slovak tourists get their food, and how are the shelters kept free from waste? The answer lies in the institution of the „porter”.These individuals manually deliver everything needed for the shelter’s functioning, walking along narrow trails with massive backpacks containing food, water, gas cylinders, and firewood.

After dropping off supplies at the shelter, porters collect waste and garbage left by tourists on their return trip. This system allows the Slovak shelters to function efficiently and accommodate hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Juliusz Słowacki – A Resting Place Controversy

Juliusz Słowacki, one of Poland’s national bards, was initially buried in Paris, at Montmartre Cemetery. However, few people know that his final resting place became the subject of a heated dispute among Polish intellectuals in the early 20th century.

The idea to bring the bard’s ashes back to Poland was born, and Marshal Józef Piłsudski himself was a major advocate for the plan. The goal was to have Słowacki’s remains interred in the basement of the Wawel Cathedral on the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1909. Before reaching a consensus on the final resting place, though, other ideas were considered.

One such proposal came from Stefan Żeromski, who suggested transferring Słowacki’s ashes to the crag of Kościelec in the Tatra Mountains. Eventually, an agreement was reached, and Słowacki’s remains were laid to rest next to Mickiewicz—with permission. So, if you’re a fan of Słowacki’s work, remember the story behind his final resting place and the passionate debate it inspired.

The Mystery of the Ice Pass

The Ice Pass in the Tatra Mountains is a place shrouded in great mystery, with stories surrounding it that could serve as the basis for a gripping crime movie. One of the most well-known tales involves the Kasznic family, who on August 3, 1925, stayed at the Teryego Shelter in the Valley of Five Spiskie Ponds.

tatra mountains poland tourist

The family had a long journey ahead of them to reach Zakopane, requiring them to traverse the Jaworowa Valley, make their way to Jaworzyna Spiska, and then overcome Łysa Polana. During the summer, this task isn’t particularly challenging for a physically capable tourist, but when the weather takes a turn for the worse, as it did then, the journey becomes perilous. The Kasznic family chose to return with four Polish mountaineers they encountered at the shelter.

What happened next remains an unsolved mystery to this day. As they descended the route to Zakopane, nearly all of them perished, but there was no apparent cause for their demise. The sole survivor, Waleria Kasznicowa, was discovered by the Head of the Tatra Emergency Service, General Mariusz Zaruski.
