How far is a light-year ? It might seem like a weird question because isn’t a ‘year’ a unit of time, and ‘far’ a unit of distance? While that is correct, a ‘light-year’ is actually a measure of distance. A light-year is the distance light can travel in one year.

Light is the fastest thing in our Universe traveling through interstellar space at 186,000 miles/second (300,000 km/sec). In one year, light can travel 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion km).

A light year is a basic unit astronomers use to measure the vast distances in space.

To give you a great example of how far a light year actually is, it will take Voyager 1 (NASA’s longest-lived spacecraft) over 17,000 years to reach 1 light year in distance traveling at a speed of 61,000 kph.

Why Do We Use Light-Years?

Because space is so vast, the measurements we use here on Earth are not very helpful and would result in enormous numbers.

When talking about locations in our own galaxy we would have numbers with over 18 zeros. Instead, astronomers use light-time measurements to measure vast distances in space. A light-time measurement is how far light can travel in a given increment of time.

  • Light-year: 5.88 trillion miles

Understanding Light-Years

To help wrap our heads around how to use light-years, let’s look at how far things are away from the Earth starting with our closest neighbor, the Moon.

The Moon is 1.3 light-seconds from the Earth.

Earth is about 8 light-minutes (~92 million miles) away from the Sun. This means light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to reach us.

Jupiter is approximately 35 light minutes from the Earth. This means if you shone a light from Earth it would take about a half hour for it to hit Jupiter.

Pluto is not the edge of our solar system, in fact, past Pluto, there is the Kieper Belt , and past this is the Oort Cloud . The Oort cloud is a spherical layer of icy objects surrounding our entire solar system.

If you could travel at the speed of light, it would take you 1.87 years to reach the edge of the Oort cloud. This means that our solar system is about 4 light-years across from edge to edge of the Oort Cloud.

The nearest known exoplanet orbits the star Proxima Centauri , which is four light years away (~24 trillion miles). If a modern-day jet were to fly to this exoplanet it would not arrive for 5 million years.

One of the most distant exoplanets is 3,000 light-years (17.6 quadrillion miles) away from us in the Milky Way. If you were to travel at 60 miles an hour, you would not reach this exoplanet for 28 billion years.

Our Milky Way galaxy is approximately 100,000 light-years across (~588 quadrillion miles). Moving further into our Universe, our nearest neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy is 2.537 million light-years (14.7 quintillion miles) away from us.

Light, a Window into the Past

While we cannot actually travel through time, we can see into the past. How? We see objects because they either emit light or light has bounced off their surface and is traveling back to us.

Even though light is the fastest thing in our Universe, it takes time to reach us. This means that for any object we are seeing it how it was in the past. How far in the past? However long it took the light to reach us.

For day-to-day objects like a book or your dog, it takes a mere fraction of a fraction of a second for the light bouncing off the object to reach your eye. The further away an object is, the further into its past you are looking.

For instance, light from the Sun takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth, this means we are always seeing the Sun how it looked 8 minutes ago if you were on its surface.

Traveling back through our solar system, Jupiter is approximately 30 light-minutes from Earth, so we see Jupiter how it looked 30 minutes ago if you were on its surface. Extending out into the Universe to our neighbor the Andromeda galaxy, we see it how it was 2.537 million years ago.

If there is another civilization out in the Universe watching Earth, they would not see us here today, they would see Earth in the past. A civilization that lives 65 million light-years away would see dinosaurs roaming the Earth.

For most space objects, we use light-years to describe their distance. A light-year is the distance light travels in one Earth year. One light-year is about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion km). That is a 6 with 12 zeros behind it!

Looking Back in Time

When we use powerful telescopes to look at distant objects in space, we are actually looking back in time. How can this be?

Light travels at a speed of 186,000 miles (or 300,000 km) per second. This seems really fast, but objects in space are so far away that it takes a lot of time for their light to reach us. The farther an object is, the farther in the past we see it.

Our Sun is the closest star to us. It is about 93 million miles away. So, the Sun's light takes about 8.3 minutes to reach us. This means that we always see the Sun as it was about 8.3 minutes ago.

The next closest star to us is about 4.3 light-years away. So, when we see this star today, we’re actually seeing it as it was 4.3 years ago. All of the other stars we can see with our eyes are farther, some even thousands of light-years away.

Stars are found in large groups called galaxies . A galaxy can have millions or billions of stars. The nearest large galaxy to us, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light-years away. So, we see Andromeda as it was 2.5 million years in the past. The universe is filled with billions of galaxies, all farther away than this. Some of these galaxies are much farther away.

In 2016, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope looked at the farthest galaxy ever seen, called GN-z11. It is 13.4 billion light-years away, so today we can see it as it was 13.4 billion years ago. That is only 400 million years after the big bang . It is one of the first galaxies ever formed in the universe.

A light-year is a measure of astronomical distance: Light travels through a vacuum at precisely 983,571,056 feet (299,792,458 meters) per second, making a light-year approximately 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers).

A light-year is a measurement of distance and not time (as the name might imply). A light-year is the distance a beam of light travels in a single Earth year, which equates to approximately 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers). 

On the scale of the universe , measuring distances in miles or kilometers is cumbersome given the exceedingly large numbers being discussed. It is much simpler for astronomers to measure the distances of stars from us in the time it takes for light to travel that expanse. For example, the nearest star to our sun , Proxima Centauri , is 4.2 light-years away, meaning the light we see from the star takes a little over four years to reach us. 

The speed of light is constant throughout the universe and is known to high precision. In a vacuum, light travels at 670,616,629 mph (1,079,252,849 km/h). To find the distance of a light-year, you multiply this speed by the number of hours in a year (8,766). The result: One light-year equals 5,878,625,370,000 miles (9.5 trillion km). At first glance, this may seem like an extreme distance, but the enormous scale of the universe dwarfs this length. One estimate puts the diameter of the known universe at 28 billion light-years in diameter .

Measuring in miles or kilometers at an astronomical scale is impractical given the scale of figures being used. Starting in our cosmic neighborhood, the closest star-forming region to us, the Orion Nebula , is a short 7,861,000,000,000,000 miles away, or expressed in light-years, 1,300 light-years away. The center of our galaxy is about 27,000 light-years away. The nearest spiral galaxy to ours, the Andromeda galaxy , is 2.5 million light-years away. Some of the most distant galaxies we can see are billions of light-years from us. The galaxy GN-z11 is thought to be the farthest detectable galaxy from Earth at 13.4 billion light-years away.

Like degrees, the light-year can also be broken down into smaller units of light-hours, light-minutes or light-seconds. For instance, the sun is more than 8 light-minutes from Earth, while the moon is just over a light-second away. Scientists use these terms when talking about communications with deep-space satellites or rovers. Because of the finite speed of light, it can take more than 20 minutes to send a signal to the Curiosity rover on Mars .

Measuring in light-years also allows astronomers to determine how far back in time they are viewing. Because light takes time to travel to our eyes, everything we view in the night sky has already happened. In other words, when you observe something 1 light-year away, you see it as it appeared exactly one year ago. We see the Andromeda galaxy as it appeared 2.5 million years ago. The most distant object we can see, the cosmic microwave background , is also our oldest view of the universe, occurring just after the Big Bang some 13.8 billion years ago.

Astronomers also use parsecs as an alternative to the light-year. Short for parallax-second, a parsec comes from the use of triangulation to determine the distance of stars. To be more specific, it is the distance to a star whose apparent position shifts by 1 arcsecond (1/3,600 of a degree) in the sky after Earth orbits halfway around the sun. One arcsecond is equal to 3.26 light-years.

Whether it's light-years or parsecs, astronomers will continue to use both to measure distances in our expansive and grand universe.

So astronomical units are a great way to compress truly astronomical numbers to a more manageable size.

Astronomical units also make it easy to think about distances between solar system objects. They make it easy to see that Jupiter orbits five times farther from the Sun than Earth, and that Saturn is twice as far from the Sun as Jupiter. (This is because, technically, you're expressing every distance as a ratio of the distance from Earth to the Sun. Convenient!)

For much greater distances — interstellar distances — astronomers use light years. A light year is the distance a photon of light travels in one year, which is about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion kilometers, or 63,000 AU). Put another way, a light year is how far you'd travel in a year if you could travel at the speed of light, which is 186,000 miles (300,000 kilometers) per second. (By the way, you can't travel at the speed of light, as far as we know, but that's a whole other story...) Like AU, light years make astronomical distances more manageable. For example, the nearest star system to ours is the triple star system of Alpha Centauri , at about 4.3 light years away. That's a more manageable number than 25 trillion miles, 40 trillion kilometers or 272,000 AU.

Light years also provide some helpful perspective on solar system distances: the Sun is about 8 light minutes from Earth. (And yes, there are also light seconds !) And because light from objects travels at light speed , when you see the Sun, or Jupiter or a distant star, you're seeing it as it was when the light left it, be that 8 minutes, tens of minutes or 4.3 years ago. And this is fundamental to the idea that when we're looking farther out into space, we're seeing farther back in time. (Think about it: you're seeing all the stars in the sky at different times in history — some a few years ago, others hundreds of years ago — all at the same time!)

Finally, parsecs. This is the unit used when the number of light years between objects climbs into the high thousands or millions. One parsec is 3.26 light years. The origin of this unit of measure is a little more complicated, but it's related to how astronomers measure widths in the sky. Astronomers use "megaparsecs" — a megaparsec is 1 million parsecs — for intergalactic distances, or the scale of distances between the galaxies.

And at the point when distances between galaxies become so epic that even megaparsecs get unwieldy, astronomers talk about distances in terms of how much a galaxy's light has been shifted toward longer, redder wavelengths by the expansion of the universe — a measure known as "redshift." Now that's astronomical.

A guide to lightyears, the unit used by astronomers to measure vast distances in the cosmos

Using lightyears to measure distance in the Universe and how long it would take to travel one lightyear by foot, car, plane and rocket.

The numbers we use in astronomy are, literally, astronomical. It can be hard to get your head around so many zeros.

If we were to use kilometres and miles it would be like measuring your commute in millimetres.

To try to simplify things, when we discuss objects within our Solar System, we use the Astronomical Unit (AU) to measure distance.

One AU is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun or 150 million kilometres (93 million miles). Our Solar System has a diameter of just 1,921 AUs. So far so good.

To measure vast distances across space , scientists use the Parsec , the distance 1AU subtends an angle of 1 arc-second (1/3600 of a degree) which is 206,265 AUs, or 30.9 trillion km (19.2 trillion miles) and difficult for most of us to comprehend.

So the lightyear is the standard measure of distance for anything outside the Solar System.

A simple definition of lightyear

Put simply, a lightyear is the distance light travels in space in a year, 9.46 trillion km (5.88 trillion miles) or 63,241 AU, 0.30 parsecs.

Nothing travels faster than light. It travels nearly one million times faster than sound. A lightsecond equals 300,000 km (186,000 miles).

A lightminute is about 18 million km ( 11 million miles) and a lighthour is 1.1 billion km.

One AU equals 8.3 light minutes and a Parsec equals 3.26 lightyears.

Lightyears and looking back in time

The further we look into space, the farther back in time we see.

Proxima Centauri , the nearest star is 4.25 lightyears away, so the light we see from it today, started its journey four years and three months ago.

If Proxima Centauri exploded today it would take 4 years and 3 months before we saw it happen.

The radius of the observable Universe and so the farthest we can see into space is 46.6 billion lightyears.

Travelling a lightyear

Our crewed spaceships, like Apollo, reach speeds of around 39,400 km/h (24,500 mph). It would still take around 27 thousand years to travel one lightyear.

A plane travelling at 965 km/h (600 mp/h) would take 1 million years to travel one lightyear.

A car with an average speed of 90 km/h (56 mph) would take 12 million years, and if you fancied a walk, at 5 km/h (3 mph) it would take you a whopping 216 million years to travel one lightyear, with no comfort breaks!

Earth orbits the Sun at 107 thousand km/h or 67 thousand mph, so it would take 10 thousand years for Earth travel one lightyear.

But our Solar system is also travelling through the Galaxy at 720 thousand km/h (448 thousand mph) which takes just 1,500 years to travel one lightyear.

Travelling at the speed of light

Currently, faster-than-light travel seems an unreachable goal, despite movies showing us using wormholes , warp drives and spore drives in the future.

The closest proposition is to use the energy and momentum of light itself to propel a spacecraft.

A city-sized arrangement of synchronised lasers, firing photons to push a small hand-sized spacecraft to 25 per cent the speed of light.

That would get us 4.25 light years to Proxima Centauri in under 20 years.

What is a light-year?

The fastest thing that we know of is light which travels at a speed of 186,000 miles or 300,000 kilometers per second in empty space. To get an idea of how fast this is, light can travel about seven times around Earth in one second! Astronomers use the speed of light to measure how far away things are in space. A light-year (ly) is the distance that light can travel in one year. In one year, light travels about 5,880,000,000,000 miles or 9,460,000,000,000 kilometers. So, this distance is 1 light-year. For example, the nearest star to us is about 4.3 light-years away. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 150,000 light-years across, and the nearest large galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.3 million light-years away.

On Earth, we measure distance through steps, meters, kilometers, miles, or some other unit of measurement by which we can determine distance. The universe is so large, that sometimes measuring in kilometers or miles is pointless. In space, it is easier to measure distance with the help of light years. We can easily determine how long it takes us to cover a certain distance in kilometers if we know how fast we are going, but we never calculate how long it takes us to travel a light year. Maybe it’s time to answer that question. How long would it take to travel one light year?

To travel one light year, if we travel at the speed of light, it would take us one year. In spacecraft, time would pass differently, so one would not even have the feeling of traveling and the travel time would fly by in less than a second. Time stops for a man, as does his aging, as long as his spacecraft travels at the speed of light. 

For people on Earth, however, the journey of one light year would take one year.  The difference in the experience of traveling one light year occurs due to different perceptions of time on Earth and in space. On Earth, we have learned to count time in seconds, minutes, hours, days and years. For an object traveling at the speed of light, time is irrelevant. A journey lasting one light year or a billion light years for a person traveling at the speed of light will seem absolutely the same in time. Less than a second, almost zero time.

How long is a light year?

First thing you need to know: a light year is a unit of measurement for distance, not for time! It is a unit of distance that represents the total distance that the beam of light travels in one year moving in a straight line in empty space. It is assumed that there are no strong magnetic or gravitational fields at this distance. This unit of measurement is used primarily in astronomy to calculate the distance between celestial objects. It would be a bit complicated to use kilometers or miles to measure distances in space given that the distance between certain celestial bodies would require numerous zeros. 

The speed of light is 299 792458 meters per second. One Julian year, the year how we measure it, has 365.25 days, or 31,500,000 seconds. The light year is equal to 9,460,730,472,580,800 meters or approximately 9,461 × 1015 meters.

How many days is a light year in human years?

A light year is used to calculate the distance that light travels in a human year. One light year is therefore the same as one human year. Fifty light years is 50 human years. There is no difference in the length of the light year and human year.

A light year is just a name used for a unit of distance, not time. When we hear the term light year, we immediately think of time, but a light year has nothing to do with calculating the year. The distances in space are becoming so great that it is impractical to express them in common units of measurement, so we turn to light years.

There is even a unit that is larger than a light year, and that is the parsec. It is used to measure the distance between celestial bodies located outside the Solar System. One parsec is equal to 3.3 light years or 31 trillion kilometers.

How fast can we travel in space?

The speed at which we will travel in space depends on the spacecraft we use.

The human speed record was set by astronauts during the Apollo 10 mission. Apollo 10 was a test mission just before sending a man to the Moon. When returning from lunar orbit, their spacecraft reached a speed of 39,897 kilometers per hour. Such speed is still not possible to reach with today’s technology. Its successor, the Apollo 11, reached tremendous speeds at times but traveled at an average speed of 5,000 km / h.

In order to stay in space orbit, the shuttle must reach a speed of 28,000 km / h. That’s 9 times faster than a bullet. However, the space shuttle doesn’t go that fast all the time. The speed at which it will fly depends on the orbital altitude, which is approximately between 304 kilometers to 528 kilometers above sea level depending on the mission.

SpaceX, a private company whose goal is to enable the colonization of Mars, is one of the most modern spacecraft companies. In 2012, it began supplying the International Space Station with supplies. In 2020, SpaceX sent its Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station for the first time. The spacecraft was transporting two astronauts traveling at an average speed of 28 163 kilometers per hour. The International Space Station is quite close to Earth, so it’s hard to reach a higher speed on such a short journey.

The fastest object that humans have made is the NASA Helios 2 rehearsal. During the mission, Helios 2 reached a speed of 252,793 km / h. This rehearsal was launched back in 1976, so it is surprising that no one has overtaken it so far.

Parker Solar Probe will soon break the record set by Helios 2. Parker solar probe is a NASA probe launched in 2018 whose mission is making observations of the outer corona of the Sun. In 2025, it should come closest to the Sun and at that time it will travel at a speed of 690,000 km / h or 0.064% of the speed of light.

When we study the speed that modern spacecraft can reach, we are still years, and perhaps centuries, far from reaching the speed of light, if we ever reach it at all.

We know, however, to what extent we can go. The first discussions about the speed of light began with the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle who considered light travel instantaneously. Albert Einstein later in 1905 wrote a paper on special relativity. Einstein’s theory of special relativity proved that there is a limited speed of travel that we can reach: the speed of light. Nothing can travel faster than 300,000 kilometers per second which is the speed of light. The object should have an infinite amount of energy to make the object reach the speed of light.

How long would it take us right now to travel 1 light year?

With today’s technology, it would take us approximately 37,200 years to travel the distance of one light year.

For example, if we were to travel at a speed of 58,536 km / h, which is the speed at which the New Horizons rehearsal travels on its way to Pluto, it would take us just under 20,000 years to cross the path of one light year.

If the spacecraft were traveling at the speed at which Helios 2 was traveling, the spacecraft would have traveled one light-year in 4269 light-years.

If a Saturn V rocket that took the man to the moon were to travel, it would take 108,867 years to travel.

If we set out on that journey by the fastest plane, we will need 305975 human years.

If we were to set out on foot on a journey one light year long, it would take us 225 million years to cross it. At this time, the breaks that you would definitely need along the way are not even included.

A snail would cross a distance of one light-year by 83304201370000 years.

How long would it take to travel 1 light year at the speed of light?

If spacecraft traveled at the speed of a light year, it would travel the distance of one light year in one human year. If we were to travel at a speed of half a light year, it would take us 2 years. If we could travel at the speed of light, we could go around the Earth 7.5 times in one second.

However, for a man traveling in a spacecraft at the speed of light, time would not flow the same as outside the spacecraft. The man in the spacecraft would not age, and the time it took to cross one light-year would seem like a second. Even less than a second. This is not just an assumption. Numerous experiments have proven that indeed time flows differently when it travels at the speed of light.

It’s hard to explain what it would feel like to travel at the speed of light because we’re still a long way from technology that could allow us to do so at that speed. We currently need three days to the moon, but if we traveled at the speed of light, we would cross that path in just 1.3 seconds. Exploring the universe at the speed of a light year would significantly speed up the whole process, and we can only hope for that for now.

Understanding the scale of empty space in the universe requires grappling with vast distances far beyond anything we humans experience.

To simplify a huge number that could quickly fill the width of a page, astronomers adopted the light-year (LY) as a unit of measurement for distance that would make the vast expanse of the universe more manageable. But how many years in a light year?

The answer will depend on the moving object’s rate of speed. If the object is traveling at the  speed of light,  then the time it will take to cover the distance of a light year is one Earth year. If traveling at half the speed of light, it would take twice as long, two Earth years, and so forth.

The speed of light , the fastest thing currently known in the universe, travels through the vacuum of space at approximately 186,000 miles (299,792 km) per second . That means the distance a beam of light travels during one year here on Earth is about 5.87 trillion miles (9.46 trillion km) . 

The name can be confusing, but it’s essential to understand that a light-year is a unit of distance, not a unit of time . It does not measure a span of years but how far a light photon travels in the span of one year on Earth .  

It’s a unit of measurement to help everyone better comprehend the huge distances between stars, galaxies, and other celestial objects in space. Let’s look at a couple of examples.

The nearest star to our Sun, Proxima Centauri , is about 4.24 light years away from Earth. That means the light from Proxima Centauri takes over four years to reach us! When we look at that star, we’re actually seeing it as it was over four years ago.

But how long would it take you to travel light-years to Proxima Centauri in a spaceship moving at 100 mph (160.9 km)? It would take you a “never-gonna-get-there” 6.7 million Earth years just to make it, roughly a quarter of the journey, one light-year .

Our Milky Way galaxy spans 100,000 light-years. It takes light one hundred thousand Earth years to travel from one edge of the Milky Way to the other side.

So if one-light year is 5.87 trillion miles (9.46 trillion km) you can understand why expressing distance as 100,000 (ly) is much easier than multiplying 5.87 trillion (9.46 trillion km) by 100,000.

The Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest spiral galaxy to us, is approximately 2.5 million light years away. The light we see from Andromeda has taken two million and five hundred thousand years to reach our eyes. If we had the capability to send a probe traveling at light speed toward Andromeda, it would take 2.5 million years to arrive.

Distances in space are so immense that customary units like miles or kilometers don’t work very well. That’s why astronomers rely on light-years and other special units of distance, like astronomical units and parsecs . 

Measuring Cosmic Distances

Astronomers have several units of measurements they will use depending on how great of a distance needs to be noted.

Astronomical Units (AU)

An astronomical unit (AU) refers to the Earth-Sun distance. One (AU) equals the distance from the Earth to the Sun – about 93 million miles (150 million km) .

It is considered for the notation of smaller units of distance. One light year is roughly 63,241 times greater than an (AU).

A  parsec  equals 3.26 light years, around 19 trillion miles (31 trillion kilometers).

This term originated from the method of parallax, where one parsec is the distance at which an astronomical object would appear to shift by one arcsecond against the backdrop of more distant stars in the Earth’s six-month orbital traverse.

The concept of parsecs is essential for communicating astronomical distances beyond our solar system and throughout the galaxy, providing a standardized measurement for interstellar space.

Light Years & Light Minutes

As we discussed earlier, a light-year represents the distance of 5.87 trillion miles (9.46 trillion km). But there are times when describing shorter distances, it is easier to express a distance in light minutes.

It’s the distance light travels during minutes here on Earth. An example is 186,000/miles per second multiplied by the number of seconds in a minute (60 seconds) = 11,160,000 mi.

The average distance to Mars from Earth is 139,808,475 miles . It could also be expressed as 12.5 light minutes .

How to Calculate the Distance of One Light Year

The formula to calculate the distance of 1 light-year is:

(d) Distance = (r) Rate x (t) Time

Our variables are:

Speed of light = (r) Distance of Light = (d) Time = (t)

This equation would look like:

Speed of light x 1 Earth Year = Distance of a light year

Since we know the speed of light, let’s calculate how many seconds in a year:

60 seconds x 60 minutes = 3600/secs in 1 hour 3600 seconds x 24 hours = 86,400 secs in 1 day 86,400 seconds x 365 days = 31,536,000 seconds 1 year.

Now we have our time variable:

Rate x Time = Distance 186,000/mps x 31,536,000/spy = 5.87 Trillion Miles

To understand how many years in a light year first remember a light-year is always a measurement of distance and not time . Astronomers will use light-years, light-minutes, parsecs, and astronomical units to express these unimaginable distances in our beautiful, mysterious universe.

So, the answer to how many years in a light year will always depend on how fast the object is moving. How many years to travel 20 light-years? At the speed of light 20 Earth years. At the speed of Voyager 1 (37,132/mph), 18,065 years . So its all relative to speed.

Anything less than the speed of light will take many, many years to make the incredibly long distant journey of a light-year.

Humans have discovered powerful telescopes to gaze at the beautiful night sky, only to realize that distant objects in space are things of the past. The light of these distant objects takes a certain amount of time to reach Earth.

Take the Sun for example, it is the closest star to Earth and its light takes about 8.3 minutes to reach Earth and its inhabitants. This also means humans always see the sun as it was 8.3 minutes ago each time they look up.

This characteristic applies to stars, galaxies and any other illuminating celestial objects in space. Depending on their distance from Earth, the light exuded by these space objects takes equivalent time to reach humans.

The International Astronomical Union defines a light year as the distance traveled by light in one Julian year or 365.25 days in vacuum.

According to NASA, light travels in the interstellar space at 186,000 miles (300,000 kilometers) per second and 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers) per year.

Earth is approximately 320 light years from the North Star, Polaris which means that it takes 320 years for the Polaris' light to reach Earth.

There’s no answer to this question. A light year is a measure of distance while mph (miles per hour) is a measure of speed. So, a light year cannot be measured in mph.

Here's what we know:

Light travels at a constant speed of 670,616,629 mph which means that light covers a speed of 670 million miles in an hour.

On Thursday, everyone in the northern half of our planet will experience the summer solstice. It’ll be the longest day of the year north of the Equator, and it is the scientific start of summer.

Earth has a solstice every six months, in June and in December. Leading up to the summer solstice, the sun appears in a higher spot in the sky at the same time each day until it reaches its maximum point.

After the summer solstice, the days will get shorter. The sun will appear lower in the sky each day until the winter solstice, on Dec. 21.

What time is the summer solstice this year?

According to the National Weather Service , the summer solstice will occur on Thursday at 4:51 p.m. Eastern time. This is the moment during the day when the sun reaches its most northern point in the sky during the year.

Why do we have solstices?

The sun’s height in the sky each day changes because Earth spins on an axis that is tilted 23.5 degrees away from vertical. This means that depending on the time of year the hemispheres lean either toward or away from the sun.

This is what gives Earth its seasons: When the northern half of the planet leans toward the sun, it experiences summer; at the same time, the southern half of the planet leans away from the sun, and is in winter. It is a mystery why Earth is angled this way, though some astronomers believe that its tilt paved the way for life to exist .

In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice happens when Earth’s tilt toward the sun is greatest. Despite this, the hottest temperatures of the year usually occur a few weeks later , in July or August, because it takes time for the sun’s rays to warm our planet.

Do other planets in our solar system have solstices?

Any planet that is tilted will have solstices. According to NASA , every planet in our solar system has an axial tilt, but some are more pronounced than others.

Venus and Jupiter have only slight leans, around 3 degrees, while Mercury, at 0.03 degrees, is barely slanted at all. On the other hand, Uranus is oriented a whopping 97.8 degrees from vertical, causing one of its poles to point directly at the sun at times. That extreme tilt causes it to have some of the most dramatic seasons in our solar system.

Saturn and Neptune both have tilts close to Earth’s. So does Mars, at 25.2 degrees, although the red planet’s tilt has shifted dramatically over millions of years .

How do people celebrate the summer solstice?

Every year, people around the world ring in the June solstice with midsummer bonfires, festivals and — for those living above the Arctic Circle — midnight sun celebrations . At the other end of the world, scientists living in Antarctica throw their annual midwinter feast to commemorate the longest, darkest night on the continent.

Others travel to ancient ruins, like Stonehenge in England or the Temple of the Sun in Peru, to greet the solstice sun the way ancient peoples once did.

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”

Summer solstice 2024 today: When is it and what causes the longest day of the year?

The longest day of the year – the summer solstice – has arrived. Here’s what to expect.

Summer is officially here (for some of us, at least). Marked by the summer solstice 2024, today the Northern Hemisphere will have more hours of sunlight than any other as the astronomical season begins.

Today has held significance in the hearts and minds of people spanning thousands of years. Whether celebrating religious ceremonies or simply firing up the BBQ for the first time, the longest day of the year is a cause for celebration. 

But if you’re not sure what it is, or why it’s important to sites like the famous Stonehenge, we’ve got you covered. 

When is the summer solstice 2024?

In 2024, the summer solstice will occur on Thursday 20 June at 9.51pm BST (4:50 pm EDT New York, 1:50pm PDT Los Angeles). While many people mark the whole day's importance, the solstice actually occurs at an exact moment – so make sure you don’t miss it.

The event occurs on the first day of the astronomical summer season, marking the moment when the northern hemisphere is directly facing the Sun .

This day is also the longest of the year, featuring the greatest number of daylight hours in 2024. In the UK and the US, you can expect at least 16 hours of daylight.

This is one of the two solstices each year, with the second one happening in December. The summer solstice always falls between June 20 and 22, and this year, it arrives one day earlier than in 2023 . 

When are sunrise and sunset on the summer solstice?

On Thursday 20 June, sunrise in London, UK, will occur at 4:43am BST, while the sunset will come at 9:21pm BST. Depending on where you are in the UK, the time will vary by a couple of minutes or so. 

For those of you in the US, times vary a little more depending on where you are in the country: 

  • New York City summer solstice sunrise time: 5:25am EDT.
  • New York City summer solstice sunset time: 8:31pm EDT.
  • Austin, Texas, summer solstice sunrise time: 6:30am CDT.
  • Austin, Texas, summer solstice sunset time: 8:36pm CDT.
  • Los Angeles summer solstice sunrise time: 5:42am PDT.
  • Los Angeles summer solstice sunset time: 8:08pm PDT.

The astute amongst you may have noticed that although today marks the longest day of the year, it’s not the earliest sunrise, nor the latest sunset. 

The precise date of the earliest sunrise (and earliest sunset) changes depending on the latitude. 

At a latitude of 40 degrees north – which includes places like Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, the Mediterranean Sea, northern Japan and Bejing in China – the earliest sunrise of the year occurred around June 14. 

Similarly, at this latitude, the latest sunset of the year happens around June 27.

"This slight difference is caused by the Earth orbiting the Sun not in a circle, but in a slight ellipse,” Dr Darren Baskill , an astrophotographer and astronomy lecturer at the University of Sussex, tells BBC Science Focus .

What is the summer solstice?

The reason for the exact nature of the summer solstice is that it occurs at the moment when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, which is when the Northern Hemisphere is most titled toward the sun. 

In other words, this is the moment when the Sun’s rays strike the northern half of the planet most directly. 

"The summer solstice occurs for the Northern Hemisphere when the Earth moves into such a position that its North Pole is pointing in the direction of the Sun, making the Sun high in the sky," says Baskill.

"At the same time, the South Pole of the Earth is pointing away from the Sun, and so the Southern Hemisphere has their winter solstice on the same day."

The Earth's axis is tilted about 24 degrees relative to its orbit around the Sun. On June 20, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted closest to the Sun, while the Southern Hemisphere is tilted farthest away, leading to opposite seasons in the two hemispheres.

As a result, when the Northern Hemisphere experiences the summer solstice, the Southern Hemisphere simultaneously experiences its winter solstice, and vice versa.

This seasonal difference is due to the axial tilt rather than the Earth's distance from the Sun. 

In fact, Earth reaches its closest point to the Sun, called perihelion, in January, and its farthest point, known as aphelion, in July.

Despite the summer solstice marking the longest day of the year, it is not typically the hottest day (apologies to those currently in the throes of a heatwave in the US). The peak temperatures usually occur in July or August because the oceans and land masses continue to release the heat they have absorbed from the prolonged daylight.

Why is the Earth tilted?

You might think it would make sense for the Earth’s poles to match up the plane of its orbit around the Sun. You’d probably be right, but alas, the Universe is not a perfect place. 

"Go back 4.5 billion years, and our infant Solar System was a violent place, with vast numbers of large asteroids hitting the young planets," says Baskill.

"One particularly large collision between the Earth and an object half its size led to the creation of the Moon – that's the only way we know for such a relatively large moon to end up in such an orbit around the Earth.

"Today's tilt of the Earth is caused by the sum of all of the impacts that were big enough to affect the tilt, including the impact that formed the Moon."

This severe tilt means that if you’re particularly far north around this time of year, the Sun doesn’t even set – a permanent day sets over the Arctic regions of our planet. 

How is the summer solstice marked around the world?

From Midsummer in Sweden (marked slightly after the solstice this year on June 22 and now immortalised by the terrifying 2019 film, Midsommar ), to mountaintop bonfires in the Austrian Tirol, the summer solstice is marked by people and cultures the world over.

The most famous of all, however, is the event taking place at Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, England.

The mysterious stone circle was built by prehistoric people some 5,000 years ago – before the invention of the wheel had reached Britain’s shores. While little is known about its designers, they were clearly in touch with the cosmos with remarkable precision. 

On the morning of the summer solstice, the sun rises on the northeastern horizon and shines directly through the outer circle onto an altar stone at its centre. 

Today, hundreds of people still gather at the monument to usher in the astronomical summer season. In fact, the summer solstice is the only day that the site has free access to tourists, allowing revellers to come and experience this ancient and sacred event.

What’s the difference between an equinox and a solstice?

Equinoxes and solstices are both key points in our year, but they mark different seasonal shifts. 

An equinox (from the Latin for "equal night") brings about roughly equal day and night lengths. 

We have two equinoxes a year, around March 20th (vernal equinox) and September 22nd (autumnal equinox), marking the start of spring and autumn respectively.

Solstices (from the Latin for "sun standing still") on the other hand, are all about sunlight. 

The summer solstice, around June 21st, brings the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, while the winter solstice, around December 21st, is the shortest. So, solstices mark the peak of summer and the depths of winter.

Do any other planets have solstices?

Before you go thinking that we’re special, every planet in the Solar System has at least some axial tilt, and therefore every planet has solstices. 

That said, Earth’s tilt is pretty pronounced. Venus and Jupiter, for example, are tilted by only around 3 degrees, while Mercury is a mere 0.03 degrees out of kilter. 

Uranus, meanwhile, is seriously askew. Its poles are a whopping 97.8 degrees from vertical, meaning they point directly at the Sun at times. 

Mars’ axis is similarly tilted to ours at 25.2 degrees, yet its seasons last twice as long and our less easy to define due to its elliptical orbit.

The 2024 summer solstice will be the earliest for 228 years. Here's why.

The time of the annual summer solstice will be the earliest it's been for centuries and will continue to creep forward every leap year until 2100. But why?

Today (June 20) the summer solstice — the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere — will begin, and it will be the earliest solstice in 228 years.

And the solstice is set to get progressively earlier for the next 72 years. But why? And why do the days change in length throughout the year to begin with?

"Solstice" means "sun stands still" in Latin. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice is the day when the sun rises and sets at its most northeasterly and northwesterly points in the year. The phenomenon is caused by Earth's 23.5 degrees of axial tilt with respect to the sun; so as our planet orbits our star, one hemisphere leans away from the sun and the other towards it. 

This means that the solstice is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere — the June solstice is the shortest day of the year and marks the winter solstice in the south. 

Today's solstice is the earliest since 1796 , the year in which George Washington issued his farewell address. But this variation is caused by humans and boils down to the Gregorian calendar.

The calendar divides one year into 365 days. However, Earth's actual full orbital time around the sun is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds — which we account for by adding a leap year every four years to round the calendar up. But this creates its own problem: four times 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds is 23 hours and 15 minutes, meaning it's 45 minutes short of a full day.

To account for this drift, the calendar is "reset" by skipping a leap day every four centuries, with the next reset due in 2100. But until then, during leap years like this year, the solstice will occur 18 hours earlier than the previous year and 45 minutes earlier than the previous leap year. 

So every successive leap year from now until the end of the millennium will be the earliest since 1796 by 45 minutes.

One day after the solstice this year, on June 21, skywatchers will be treated to a beautiful Strawberry Moon — the lowest full moon of the year.

The origins of Earth's tilt can be traced back more than 4 billion years to when Earth was first forming. During its formation, our planet suffered an estimated 10 gigantic collisions with other planets. 

In the last of these, a Mars-size planet called Theia hit our planet with such force that it transformed Earth's surface into a molten hellscape and ejected rocks and dust into space, which later became our moon. The colossal impact also gave our planet its tilt. This tilt, in turn, gave rise to the seasons, and life’s boom-and-bust cycle that spurred more complex ecosystems to evolve.

When it comes to earning rewards, I’ve always stuck with cash back cards, preferring the simplicity of knowing exactly how much my rewards are worth and the ease of redeeming for statement credits. Recently, though, I decided I wanted to travel a bit more frequently, and I figured a new travel rewards card could be a great tool to help me earn free trips. When choosing the right card for me, a few major points of consideration stood out: Cost: I didn’t feel like I traveled enough to justify a huge annual fee. Simplicity : I wanted to stick with a single, streamlined travel card and not worry about juggling multiple rewards programs or rewards rates. Perks : While I didn’t need anything too fancy, I thought it might be nice to have a perk like TSA Precheck included, since I hate waiting in long airport security lines. To my surprise, the card that stood out most was the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. Though it carried an intimidating annual fee of $395 ( See Rates & Fees ), I found this cost was more than worth it once I dug into the details. In fact, its benefits were so valuable, I barely needed to worry about offsetting the cost.  Two of its annual perks — a $300 Capital One travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles every year on my account anniversary — are valuable enough to offset the fee on their own. This means as long as I take one flight a year, I can basically break even on the card. Any rewards or perks I get beyond that feel like pure upside. It’s a huge bonus, then, that the card also includes practical benefits like Priority Pass lounge access and a credit of up to $100 toward the cost of Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. While I’ve never frequented airport lounges, I see these privileges as essentially free considering the value of the annual travel credit and bonus miles. So, I figure, why not take advantage?  For me, the Venture X strikes the perfect balance: A flat rewards rate that makes it easy to earn miles on everything I buy; flexible redemption through Capital One or via transfer to airlines and hotels, and practical perks I know I’ll use when I travel. The Sapphire Reserve is often referred to as the gold standard in travel benefits and protections, and the value of its trip insurance is a big part of that. A member of the Rick Steves Forum remarks on the value of the insurance: “It has pretty extensive coverage wherever I travel … my entire trip is covered as long as I charged any portion of the trip to my card.” This feature is unique to the Sapphire Reserve and sets it apart from other premium cards, which require you to charge your entire trip purchase to the card to have active coverage.

But using trip insurance isn’t always a simple process. As a user in the r/CreditCards forum on Reddit cautions: “Credit card travel insurance in general is very specific on what it covers, and people tend to overestimate just how useful the coverage actually is,” they write. “These are named peril policies, so unless you see your exact situation as a covered hazard the policies won't pay out.”

The Platinum Card from American Express gets a lot of buzz for reasons similar to the Sapphire Reserve. The card gives so many benefits, credits and additional perks that it’s often called a coupon book for luxury travel. But for many people, the value comes down to whether they’re willing to do the work to maximize its features. Another r/CreditCards member says they use the card’s Hilton and Marriott status boosters, rental car company loyalty program automatic status features, Centurion lounge access, hotel and airline incidental credits, membership credits and more. Using all these features helps them offset the annual fee.

While some people love maximizing the card’s features to extract  as much value as possible, others, like this Redditor, think it’s too much work:

“The only benefit the Platinum card really adds is Centurion but only to the [cardholder] … I believe the Platinum is worth [it] at least the first year for the [sign-up] bonus but then it doesn't get much use after that. Trust me the credits are really annoying to use.” — r/CreditCards user

Points and miles tend to be more flexible than cash back, but since their value depends on how you redeem them — and, in the case of travel redemptions, where you’re going, when you book, your fare class and more — it may take a bit more effort to make the most of them.

What are your points and miles worth?

Since many airlines and hotels use dynamic pricing models that continually optimize airfare and room prices, it can be hard to know exactly how much your rewards are worth without doing a little math.

Luckily, you don’t need to be a travel hacker to get a sense of this idea. Before you redeem, you can check your reward redemption value by dividing the cost of a plane or hotel booking in cash by its cost in points or miles. This calculation will result in the cash value of your points or miles.

You can also compare this value to Bankrate’s latest points and miles valuations to determine if you’re getting a good deal on your redemptions. Bankrate collected data on hundreds of bookings across dozens of airline, hotel and credit card rewards programs and estimated how much each program’s rewards are worth on average .

The table below shows Bankrate’s estimated reward redemption value for a variety of popular airline loyalty programs. You’ll notice how widely the value varies between airlines, with some offering close to 3 cents per point in average redemption value and others struggling to meet a 1-cent-per-point value.

Keep in mind, however, that these values are averages based on a variety of fare classes, destinations, booking periods and more. For example, while Bankrate estimates Delta SkyMiles carry an average redemption value of around 1.2 cents per mile, they could be worth more or less depending on the details of your booking.

Like airline miles, hotel points fluctuate in value. The table below shows Bankrate’s estimated point values for some of the most popular hotel brands. 

As you can see, hotel points tend to be worth less than airline and credit card rewards on average, often carrying less than 1 cent per point in redemption value. That said, hotel loyalty programs sometimes offer more favorable exchange rates when you transfer rewards from a credit card rewards program. For example, you may be able to turn 1,000 credit card points into 2,000 hotel points (a 2:1 transfer ratio).

Unlike hotel and airline rewards programs, credit card reward programs typically earn points or miles that offer a consistent redemption value when you use them with the issuer. Though the redemption value of your rewards may vary based on how you redeem, each redemption method should offer a consistent baseline value. 

Some credit card rewards programs may also allow you to transfer your points or miles to airline and hotel loyalty programs, which could boost their value considerably. For each major credit card rewards program, we estimate a baseline redemption value (assuming you book for travel with the issuer) and a Bankrate’s Value, which averages the program’s best-value transfer partners.

When to use rewards vs. cash

To demonstrate when it’s best to use your reward miles versus paying in cash, we set up this example:

We estimate American Airlines AAdvantage miles are worth 1.0 cents. If you book a seat in the main cabin on a one-way flight from Boston to Miami, and it costs either $139 or 21,500 miles, your miles are only worth $0.006 ($139 / 21,500 miles = $0.006). Since your miles for this flight are worth less than 1.0 cents, you may want to save your miles and pay cash for this flight.

But if you book a first-class seat on the same flight for $433 or 31,500 miles, your miles are now worth $0.013 ($433 / 31,500 = $0.013). Since 1.3 cents is higher than our latest valuation, you’re coming out ahead if you use your miles to pay for this flight.

Plan for the sign-up bonus

The best travel cards come with generous welcome offers, but these bonuses may require a high spend in a short timeframe. That’s why it’s important to consider whether the spending requirement fits with your typical spending habits or whether you need to plan purchases to meet the requirement. Just be sure not to overextend yourself or take on debt you can’t pay back just to earn a bonus — interest and fees can easily eat through any value you’d get.

Look out for limited-time offers, partner perks and other benefits

Keeping an eye out for limited-time offers like extraordinarily high sign-up bonuses, perks with partner services (like rideshares or delivery services) and other reward-earning opportunities is a great way to squeeze the most value from your travel card. Issuers sometimes provide shopping and travel portals and card-linked reward programs for select purchases (like for pre-paid dining or participating merchant spending), which can help you bank extra rewards.

Track your spending and rewards each account statement

Track your favorite stores’ and services’ merchant category codes (MCCs) to fine-tune your spending habits for maximum rewards. If you notice your expenses changing, this practice may also help you notice whether you need to change which rewards cards you carry.

“The first step to optimizing your spending is to take the time to collect the MCCs of stores you frequently shop at. During the process, you might find that some stores in the same chain may have different MCCs, depending on their primary inventory. Even different counters or sections in the same department store may carry different MCCs. Our data: What credit score do you need for the best travel cards?

It’s no secret that your credit score heavily influences which cards you’re likely to get approval for. But how good does your credit need to be to get the best credit cards for travel? We analyzed our data of Bankrate readers who applied for credit cards on our pages in 2023 and compared the approval rates of readers’ different credit tiers.

We found that, on average, 61.9 percent of users with excellent credit were approved for travel cards on our site. Then, an average of 39.5 percent and 19.5 percent of users with good and fair credit, respectively, got approval for travel credit cards they applied to.

If you have fair or bad credit, you still have options for travel credit cards. For example, the Credit One Bank Wander Card caters to people with fair credit — 57 percent of people with fair credit who applied on our site in 2023 were approved for this card , according to our data.

Obviously, the better your credit, the more likely you are to get the card you apply for , but other factors can affect your application. Issuers may also consider your income, recent credit applications, homeownership status and monthly rental or mortgage payment. Keep these other factors in mind with your credit score when you apply for credit cards.

When evaluating the best travel cards, we consider a mix of factors, including how cards score in our proprietary card rating system and whether cards offer features that fit the priorities of a diverse group of cardholders, from earning rewards in popular categories to scoring a large sign-up bonus or high-value perks. Whenever possible, we also feature cards that are available at various credit levels and price points. 

We analyzed over 150 of the most popular cards and scored each based on its rewards rate, estimated annual earnings, welcome bonus value, APR, fees, perks and more to determine whether it belonged in this month’s roundup of the best travel cards.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the key factors in our rewards card scoring methodology — our primary scoring category for travel cards — and details we considered when putting together our list of the best travel cards.

Great rewards value

The primary criteria for a rewards-earning card’s rating is its rewards value. This includes the card’s average rewards rate, estimated annual rewards earnings, sign-up bonus value and reward redemption value.

To estimate a card’s average annual rewards earnings, we first calculate its average rewards rate based on how much it earns in different bonus categories and how closely its categories align with the average person’s spending habits. In other words, we assess whether the card earns rewards at a high rate in the most popular spending categories. 

We use consumer spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to get a reliable third-party measure of people’s spending habits. The most recent BLS data estimates average total spending in 2022 was $72,967 per consumer. We then narrow our focus to which purchases are likely to be put on a credit card and earn rewards, subtracting expenditures like housing, vehicle purchases and education. This gives us a total “chargeable” annual spend of around $25,500.  

This includes the following spending by category:

  • Groceries: $5,700
  • Dining out: $3,600
  • Entertainment: $2,400
  • Gas: $3,100
  • Apparel and services: $1,900

Using this data, we assign a weighting to each of a card’s bonus categories. For example, a card’s grocery rewards rate receives a 22 percent weighting based on how much of the average person’s budget is spent on groceries.

We also estimate the redemption value of points or miles from various issuer, airline and hotel rewards programs.

This weighting and rewards valuation allows us to estimate a card’s average annual rewards earnings — how many points or miles you’d earn with a given card if your spending was about average and you used the card for all of your purchases — as well as what those points are worth. We also use point valuations to determine a card’s sign-up bonus value

With these calculations complete, we assign each card a score based on how its average rewards earnings, sign-up bonus value, rewards rate and redemption value stack up against other rewards cards.

The better these values, the higher its score will be, making it more worthy of inclusion in our list and increasing its potential ranking.

Reasonable rates and fees

We also score cards based on how much it costs to keep them in your wallet or carry a balance. 

To start, each card is scored based on whether it offers an intro APR and how its ongoing APR compares to the rates available on other rewards cards. However, the latter rating only has a slight influence on the card’s score and whether the card is included in our list, since rewards card users generally try to avoid carrying a balance.

More important to both a card’s score and its inclusion in our list is how its annual fee influences its overall value. We consider a card’s annual fee in two ways — how it ranks relative to the fees you’ll find on other cards in the category and how it impacts a card’s overall rewards value. 

Cards with an annual fee will always be at a slight disadvantage in our scoring system since annual fees inherently cut into your rewards value. However, if a card offers terrific value via its ongoing rewards and perks, it can earn a high score and a spot in our list even if it carries a high annual fee. After all, the highest rewards rates and most valuable perks are often found on cards with annual fees. 

With this in mind, we rate a card based primarily on how its ongoing rewards value and ongoing perk value (such as annual credits or bonuses) stack up against those of other cards in the category when you subtract annual fees.

That said, we strive to include as many no-annual-fee options in our list as possible since many people would rather not worry about offsetting fees, even if a card carries impressive rewards and perks.

Redemption flexibility

Rewards cards may make it easy to earn a lot of points, miles or cash back, but how easy is it to use those rewards? After all, if it takes a ton of effort to redeem rewards or you can only redeem rewards in a couple of ways, a card may be more trouble than it’s worth. 

As such, we rate each card’s flexibility based on the restrictions it imposes on earning and redeeming rewards. We factor this rating into a card’s overall score and consider it when deciding on a card’s inclusion in our list. 

Flexibility factors include whether a card only allows you to earn a high rewards rate on only a small amount of spending or requires you to meet a certain earning threshold before you can redeem rewards. We also examine whether your points are worth less when you opt for some redemption options over others and whether a card gives you the flexibility to transfer rewards to travel partners.

Valuable perks

We also score each card’s set of features – its perks and benefits — against five tiers of features to provide a rating. 

We break down these tiers as follows:

  • Tier 1 includes fewer features than even standard credit cards (for example, an ultra-streamlined card that offers basic utility and next to nothing in the way of ancillary benefits). 
  • Tier 2 includes the benefits you’d expect on standard Visa or Mastercard credit cards, such as free access to your credit score, car rental insurance and $0 liability for fraudulent charges. 
  • Tier 3 includes “prime card” or better-than-average card features like cellphone insurance, lost luggage insurance, concierge services and purchase protection. 
  • Tier 4 includes luxury features such as airport lounge access, elite status with an airline or hotel and credits for expedited security screening membership programs. 
  • Tier 5 includes the sort of exemplary benefits you’ll find on top-tier luxury cards, such as high-value travel credits, cardholder memberships and other unique and valuable perks.

In evaluating the best cards, we tend to favor cards that offer at least Tier 3 benefits, unless they include other unique features that could make up for less-impressive perks.

And since this list focuses on travel cards, we tend to favor cards that carry travel-centric features like travel insurance, airport lounge access and credits for expedited security screening, instead of more general perks like food delivery credits or shopping discounts.

Frequently asked questions about travel credit cards, are travel credit cards worth it.

Travel cards can be well worth it since they often have exclusive travel perks like credits for airfare, hotel stays, expedited airport security services and more, as well as complimentary airport lounge access and airline or hotel privileges. However, many of the best travel credit cards come with annual fees. It’s important to at least offset the cost of these cards by taking advantage of the various travel perks and features included on the card. 

What credit score do you need for a travel credit card?

It’s possible to get a travel credit card with bad or fair credit, but most travel rewards cards are geared toward people with good or excellent credit (a FICO score of at least 670, or a VantageScore of at least 661).

Do travel miles or points expire?

Even though many major credit cards earn rewards that don’t expire, you may lose your points and miles if your account closes or isn’t in good standing. However, some co-branded cards’ rewards may expire if you don’t earn or redeem rewards within a certain timeframe (typically 12 to 36 months after the rewards are earned).

Are points or miles better on a credit card?

Whether points or miles offer better value will depend on the specific rewards program and how you redeem rewards. One airline loyalty program may earn miles that offer less than 1 cent each in average redemption value while another program’s points may offer close to 3 cents each on average. Similarly, a hotel card’s points may be worth less than half of a credit card issuer’s rewards points. Some programs offer points with only average baseline redemption value but high value when transferred to a partner airline or hotel.

Whether you should have multiple travel credit cards depends on several factors, including your brand affinity, frequency of travel and ability to pay off your cards in full each month. As a credit counselor, I see many people carrying credit card debt at high interest rates while continuing to make charges to the account for the sake of earning rewards. They lose far more than they earn each month. Having more than one travel credit card could make sense for you if you’re able to maximize your earnings by strategizing spending across each card. Just take into account annual fees and actual interest paid.

But if the thought of multiple cards is overwhelming, it’s also a good strategy to have one or two more flexible cards and focus on maximizing your earnings and redemptions until it becomes second nature.

Definitely! I currently have two travel credit cards. In addition to the Chase card that I use for my United Airlines purchases, I have the Capital One Venture card for all other airlines. I earn a solid amount of miles on everything I buy with it, so it's an easy go-to for non-travel related expenses.
