Culture and customs.
Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.
This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.
Visit ancient temples and walk history-laden pilgrim routes on a 8 day Koya-san & Kumano Trek.
History and government
Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.
Ancient history
While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.
Pre-modern history
Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.
20th century
It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.
These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.
The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.
Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.
After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.
Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.
Top places to visit in Japan
One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.
If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.
The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.
4. Kanazawa
A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.
5. Hiroshima
Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.
6. Yudanaka
This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).
Geography and environment
Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.
Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.
Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.
Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.
Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.
If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.
What to buy
- Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
- Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
- Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
- Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
- Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.
Festivals and events
If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.
Sapporo Winter Festival
Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.
Hadaka Matsuri
Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.
Fuji Rock Festival
Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Japan travel FAQs
Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?
Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Is tipping customary in Japan?
Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.
What is the internet access like in Japan?
Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.
Can I use my cell while in Japan?
Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).
What are the toilets like in Japan?
In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.
Can I drink the water in Japan?
Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?
Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.
What is ATM access like in Japan?
ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.
When is the best time to travel to Japan?
There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.
What is the weather like in Japan?
- Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
- Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
- Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
- Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .
How safe is Japan?
Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).
Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.
Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted. Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.
It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.
Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.
Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.
If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What should I wear in Japan?
Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.
Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.
Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.
The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.
Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.
What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

- 'hello' - Konnichiwa
- 'good morning' - Ohayō
- 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu

For those of you who wish to travel independently, these packages offer the perfect way to explore Japan. A little structure with a lot of flexibility may be the perfect combination for you!
Cherry Blossom Tours
Late March/early April in Japan means beautiful weather and cherry blossoms are on their way. We have many itineraries that take full advantage of this beautiful season.
Our specialty tours are small escorted group tours that include the same travel style as our popular escorted tour packages. But they have a unique focus and a one of a kind itinerary with one of a kind experiences.
Private Group Tours
Our Group Travel Services can provide you and your group with whatever you will need while visiting Japan.
Our small group tours are well-balanced, educational, culturally-broadening, and most importantly, fun tours that inspire and inform. What people love about Japan Tours
We had an amazing time on this tour. We visited so many places in such a short time. Our tour guide Yumi was friendly and fun, providing tips and helpful information along the way. Our bus driver Shingo was a great driver, manoeuvring his way through the traffic with ease. He was so much fun as well. The tour itself provided a diverse mix of activities and meals, as well as allowing some free time to explore. The hotels were of a good standard and size, always convenient to public transport.
An amazing tour so many unique experiences you just wouldn't get to do traveling by yourself. We had Holly who was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable and went out of her way to make sure we had a great experience and helped us find many hidden gems in Japan.
I like the tour.zu is good guide.frindly ,and she try the best. I like her to be my guide again.

Japan tour highlights
A country of vast contrasts, Japan’s facets offer something for every kind of traveler. Be wowed by the immense skyscrapers and blaring neon lights of always-bustling Tokyo, find serenity in the peaceful gardens of Geisha city Kyoto, look out at the perfectly conical tip of Mount Fuji, and unwind in the warm waters of a traditional hot spring.
From navigating bustling cities to taking time out in sacred temples, wandering around idyllic gardens or sampling the magnificent local dishes, our Japan vacations encompass the country’s most thrilling facets. Take a look at some of our favorite highlights of Japan:
Tokyo is a fabulous city for total cultural immersion: you may spend the morning strolling along the banks of the Sumida River or museum hopping, and in the afternoon spotting sumo wrestlers and shopping for swords and every flavor of chocolate bar under the sun. At night the city comes alive – after dark is when you’ll discover just how busy and cosmopolitan the city is. More than 25% of Japan’s total population lives within 50km of Tokyo’s center. However, dig a little deeper on our Shogun Trail tour and you’ll get to experience the ancient history of this teeming metropolis. Pay a visit to Tokyo’s oldest temple, Senso-ji, the Hamarikyu Gardens – a great place for viewing the cherry blossoms in spring – and the Meiji Shrine, for your first sighting of a traditional torii gate.
![tour group for japan](https://expl-media.azureedge.net/mediacontainer/medialibraries/explore/explore-media-v2/destinations/2. asia/japan/shutterstock_309238001.jpg)
Next on the list of our favorite places in Japan is the city of Kyoto, vastly different to Tokyo with its peaceful Zen gardens and charming little shops. Kyoto is the city of the elusive Geisha – you may even get to see some of the beautifully-dressed women as you walk along the quaint cobbled streets, nipping in and out of historic tea houses. Our Simply Japan trip includes two days to explore Kyoto, time to walk the path to Fushimi Inari Shrine through the thousands of red torii gates, sample weird and wonderful flavors in Nishiki Food Market, or visit a beautifully manicured bamboo grove. Many trips arrive in Kyoto by the famous bullet train, or Shinkansen , offering another once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Since the catastrophic atomic bombing in 1945 Hiroshima has transformed into a welcoming and thriving city that is well worth a visit. Whilst the poignant memorial in the Peace Memorial Park reminds us of the tragic event, it also inspires with messages of hope that such horrors should never happen again. Another reason to visit is the nearby Miyajima Island, just off the coast of the city, where tame deer roam. As you arrive on the ferry you'll take in the famous view of the floating torii gate. Considered to be one of the most beautiful sights in Japan, these red gates appear to float on the water. Miyajima is included in the itinerary of our Highlights of Japan trip.
Solo travel in Japan
If you’re looking to travel solo, our Japan vacations are the perfect place to start. Every one of our vacations has been designed to suit solo travelers, and though it depends on the exact tour that you choose, you’ll find that about half of our customers will also be traveling solo. Not only will you get to explore a fantastic new destination, you’ll also get to meet fellow travelers who share the same interests, while we take care of the arrangements.
Best time to go to Japan
Japan is an all-year-round destination. The summer months tend to be hot and humid with a few rain showers, and the winters are cold and crisp with clear blue skies.
The weather is at its best during the summer season from April to May, but this is also the busiest time to visit Japan and prices are higher. If you want to escape the crowds, book a trip from June to August - it will be hotter and wetter, but you’ll have more space to appreciate Japan’s wondrous sights.
For a winter getaway with a difference, head to Japan from December to February. The days are usually crisp, cold and clear, and the Japanese Alps will be covered in a blanket of white snow. Travel in February to visit Sapporo Snow Festival and enjoy an ice-breaker cruise in the Sea of Okhotsk before spending time admiring the incredible snow sculptures at the annual Sapporo Snow Festival.
If you want to see Japan’s famous blossom in full bloom, book a trip in spring from late March until mid-April. Or, to see the vibrant Koyo autumn leaves, aim for a trip in the autumn months of October and November.

Do I need a visa? Do I need vaccinations?
As of October 11, 2022, Japan will open its borders to all Europeans (including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) and North Americans (Canada and the United States) without requiring a visa.
Only non-triply vaccinated travelers need a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours prior to departure.
Do I still need a visa to travel to Japan as a tourist?
No, no visa is required for blue countries including all European countries (European Union, United Kingdom and Switzerland included) and North American countries (Canada and United States). List of blue countries: https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html . If you have another nationality, please contact the Japanese embassy in your country of residence to obtain this visa.
Do I still need a PCR or antigen test to go to Japan?
No, if you are triple vaccinated with the vaccines approved by Japan (Pfizer, Moderna, ...exhaustive list here : https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page24e_000317.html ) there is no need for any test.
I do not have 3 doses of vaccine or I am not vaccinated against COVID, can I enter Japan?
Proof of Covid vaccines is no longer required for travelers from "blue" countries. Therefore, unvaccinated travelers can enter Japan if they live in blue countries. But a negative PCR test is required at embarkation for travelers who are not vaccinated 3 times.
Is there still a quarantine upon arrival in Japan?
Quarantine and testing on arrival have been eliminated for travelers from blue countries.
Is insurance mandatory?
No, but it is recommended. Japan Experience, as an option of its tours, provides appropriate travel insurance solutions.
What anti-covid measures are still in place in Japan?
The mask must be worn indoors (except in exceptional cases) and in transportation.
What applications should I download before entering Japan?
For tracking the evolution of the coronavirus epidemic, the Japanese government recommends downloading several applications:
MySOS, the health and location tracking app (it will be used to confirm your location, health status and accommodation).
COCOA, the COVID-19 contact confirmation app (this will be used to notify you of possible contact with a COVID-19 positive person).

Japan tour highlights
A country of vast contrasts, Japan’s facets offer something for every kind of traveller.
From navigating bustling cities to taking time out in sacred temples, wandering around idyllic gardens or sampling the magnificent local dishes, our Japan holidays encompass the country’s most thrilling facets. Take a look at some of our favourite highlights of Japan:
Tokyo is a fabulous city for total cultural immersion: you may spend the morning strolling along the banks of the Sumida River or museum hopping, and in the afternoon spotting sumo wrestlers and shopping for swords and every flavour of chocolate bar under the sun. At night the city comes alive – after dark is when you’ll discover just how busy and cosmopolitan the city is. More than 25% of Japan’s total population lives within 50km of Tokyo’s centre.
Next on the list of our favourite places in Japan is the city of Kyoto, vastly different to Tokyo with its peaceful Zen gardens and charming little shops. Kyoto is the city of the elusive Geisha – you may even get to see some of the beautifully-dressed women as you walk along the quaint cobbled streets, nipping in and out of historic tea houses. Our Simply Japan trip includes two days to explore Kyoto, time to walk the path to Fushimi Inari Shrine through the thousands of red torii gates, sample weird and wonderful flavours in Nishiki Food Market, or visit a beautifully manicured bamboo grove.
If you’re looking to travel solo, our Japan holidays are the perfect place to start. Every one of our holidays has been designed to suit solo travellers, and though it depends on the exact tour that you choose, you’ll find that about half of our customers will also be travelling solo. Not only will you get to explore a fantastic new destination, you’ll also get to meet fellow travellers who share the same interests, while we take care of the arrangements.
If you want to see Japan’s famous cherry blossom, it can be difficult to predict but the most likely peak period in the main tourist spots is from the middle of March until early April. Cherry blossom is a spectacular, albeit very crowded, time to visit Japan and has been celebrated locally for centuries. Every year is different and there are variations across the country from the tropical south to Hokkaido in the north. There are lots of different Sakura varieties and each of them come into flower at a slightly different time and then last for a different period (though most will stay on the trees for around one to two weeks but a brief shower or windy day can ruin the delicate petals). Or, to see the vibrant Koyo autumn leaves, aim for a trip in the autumn months of October and November.

8 Ways to Choose the Perfect Tour Company
Last Updated: November 3, 2023
![tour group for japan tour group posing with Nomadic Matt during a hike in the hills](https://media.nomadicmatt.com/tourgroupchoice001.jpg)
That idea of tours being bad is an old and outdated perception.
These days tour groups have become more adept at the changing landscape. They feature smaller groups, more authentic experiences, a better environmental impact, and more local guides.
I love group tours.
Even though I am an independent traveler, I find group tours super fun, a great way to meet people, learn more from an informed guide, go to places you normally can’t, and wet your feet in travel. My first trip overseas was on an organized tour. I didn’t know the first thing about travel and that tour gave me the confidence to travel on my own. It was the taste test I needed to become hooked on travel. Tours give a lot of people time to adjust to the “travel lifestyle.”
Unlike in the past, today’s tours are eco-friendly, cater to all travel styles, over cheap, and make a point to use local transportation and guides. And many destinations (like Halong Bay, the Galápagos Islands, the Serengeti, Machu Picchu, Antarctica, Everest) are virtually inaccessible without an organized group tour!
In this article, I am going to tell you how to find the best tour company so you get one that is inexpensive, eco-friendly, provides local guides, and gives back to the local community:
1. Research the costs
With tour companies, it’s not always true that you get what you pay for. Many tour companies nickel-and-dime you, while some are really good at maximizing value for your every penny. Ask how your money is spent to find out if you are really getting the best value for your money. How much of your fee is their overhead? Are you paying for top-notch hotels but staying in two-star guesthouses? You want a company that is transparent with why prices are the way they are.
Moreover, make sure you ask if there are added fees to pay when arrive. Many companies require you to pay additional money when the tour starts or don’t include park or attraction entrance fees. That cheap tour won’t be so cheap if you have to pay for everything while you’re there!
2. Make sure you are the audience
Is the tour geared toward older couples? Young people? Families? You don’t want to end up on a loud Contiki tour full of drunk twenty-year-olds when all you want is a quiet holiday.
There’s a tour company for everyone — just make sure you don’t end up on one that isn’t yours. Most tour companies list their guest demographics on their “About” page, and you can usually see from the photos of their tours who goes on it.
You can also tell the audience based on accommodation: if it’s hostels or guesthouses, it’s usually for backpackers and budget travelers; if it’s fancy digs, it’s for older travelers and families.
This is very important because these are the people you’ll be traveling with so you want to make sure it’s the kind of people you are traveling with. I’m still friends with the people from my first tour in 2003 because they were people like me. The tour in Japan that was filled with older families? Not so much. We didn’t have much in common. Wonderful people but we didn’t connect.
So, I always look for tours that have my demographic in them.
3. Get local guides
Guides can make or break your trip. They are going to explain everything to you and keep the flow of the tour going. I don’t want them hiring some young kid, non-expert, or someone who doesn’t know the place well. I’ve been on tours where the guide was a walking encyclopedia, and on somewhere the guide was a glorified timekeeper.
Make sure the company uses knowledgeable, local guides. The guide should be a local or at least a long-term resident, know the local language, have travel experience, and know life-saving techniques.
If you are unsure about the guides, call the customer service line and ask them about their guides.
4. Safety record
Make sure the company follows all the proper safety requirements and is accredited by the local government, the government where they are registered, and any other appropriate trade organizations.
5. A balanced schedule
You’re paying for them to fill most of your day. How do they do that? Are they doing that? Do they have a lot of activities organized, or do they leave you to your own devices?
That said, you don’t want a schedule that is crammed with things to do. Make sure you get a schedule of all the activities and pick a tour that is balanced. Running around will leave you wishing you had a holiday from your holiday, but you don’t want to be sitting around all day, either.
I love taking small group tours because they generally have a good balance. Any tour that requires you to be on a huge bus and hits 6 cities in 5 days is not a tour to take!
6. Environmental impact
There’s a growing trend among travelers called ecotourism . It’s about more responsible travel, not only toward the environment but also toward the locals in an area. This means using local guides, hotels, and services, and making sure to reduce waste and your footprint on the local habitat.
Moreover, these companies tend to offer better and more interactive tours that also give you a good degree of autonomy.
I think it’s important to pick a company that provides great value and gives back to the place you are visiting. After all, did you go there to ruin it for others? Doubtful.
Check with groups like the International Ecotourism Society for a list of companies that have been certified “eco-friendly.” With so much money pouring into the industry now, you have a lot of companies fraudulently saying they practice ecotourism but end up being involved in terrible labor practices, animal abuse, and waste.
7. Group size
Tour companies that have smaller groups tend to be much more mindful of the environment and the impact they are leaving. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a group of 10-15 than it is in a group of 60. I don’t like to go on tours with more than 15 people on them. However, I have friends who love Contiki tours with 40-50 people. Know what you are getting yourself into, so you don’t find yourself with a group too small or too large for your tastes.
Just remember larger groups tend to stay at bigger, more impersonal accommodations (they can only accommodate the numbers), eat at more touristy restaurants, and tend to travel to more destinations quicker.
In my expert opinion, small group tours are the best.
8. Check their reputation
How have other travelers enjoyed their time? Look for online reviews to see what a company’s reputation is. It might not always be what they claim, and it’s important to find out the truth before you book.
Remember that MOST people only write a review if something goes wrong. Someone might give a tour company one star just because their eggs were runny. Find the average. Someone might hate a tour because the weather was hot. Seriously. These are actual negative reviews from the tour operator company, Thomas Cook:
“On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”
“We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”
“We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.”
“No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”
“Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”
“When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”
“We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”
So how can you trust the reviews you read online?
Take them with a grain of salt. You can read reviews on websites TrustPilot . The approval rating should look like a bell curve but with more A’s and B’s than C’s. I look for companies that average 85% or higher (or 4 out of 5 stars). If a company is that highly rated, the negative reviews are probably just outliers.
My Recommended (Best) Tour Companies
Here are some of my favorite small, day-tour, or backpacker bus tour companies:
- Take Walks – This is my favorite walking tour company. They run a wide variety of insightful and entertaining tours around Europe and the US. What makes them so good is they get you inside access to attractions and places you can’t get elsewhere. Their guides rock too!

THE #1 COMPANY FOR MULTI-DAY SMALL GROUP TOURS
When it comes to multi-day, multi-week tours (think trips through Morocco, sailing in the Galápagos, etc.), I highly recommend using Intrepid Travel .
Intrepid is my favorite and best small group tour operator out there! I really love their guides, their small groups, off-the-beaten-track itineraries, and their commitment to the local environment and community. I always have an incredible time on their tours. They are my favorite multi-day tour operator and the only one I use now (the picture at the top of this page is me on their Patagonia trip). Intrepid is environmentally friendly, uses local guides and transportation, doesn’t rush their tours, and are quite inexpensive. I don’t even consider anyone else when it comes to multi-day trips.
I love tours. They are a great way to meet people, get a local to add value and knowledge, and see places you can’t get to alone! I don’t take them often but I do take them. And, since I follow the above rules, I always have a good time. Some of my favorite travel memories were when I was on a group trip. If you follow my tips above, you’ll never go wrong either.

What to Know About the Deadly Flesh-Eating Bacteria Spreading in Japan
![tour group for japan Group A Streptococcus.](https://assets.bwbx.io/images/users/iqjWHBFdfxIU/i92dmrAgued8/v1/-1x-1.jpg)
Group A Streptococcus.
Japan is dealing with rising cases of a disease caused by a rare “flesh-eating bacteria” that can kill people within 48 hours.
Health authorities have reported over 1,000 cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) as of early June, higher than the record 941 cases reported for all of 2023. At the current rate of infection, experts fear the number of cases in Japan could reach 2,500 this year.
Paul and Ko among round one leaders in Japan
Yannik Paul and Jeong weon Ko joined a trio of local favourites at the summit after a fog-affected round one of the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan concluded on Friday.
Nearly three hours was lost to fog on Thursday morning at Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course but when play got under way, German Paul posted a 65 to sit at five under alongside Japan's Tomoyo Ikemura, Taisei Shimizu and Taiki Yoshida.
Ko of France then birdied the last to make it a five-way tie for the lead when he returned to complete his round on Friday morning.
Home favourites Yuki Inamori, Masahiro Kawamura, Ryosuke Kinoshita, Taigo Nagano and Keita Nakajima were then at four under alongside China's Li Haotong, South African Casey Jarvis, Swede Sebastian Söderberg, Scot Connor Syme, Alejandro del Rey of Spain and English pair Sam Bairstow and Matthew Jordan.
The Asian Swing returns to the DP World Tour this week at an event co-sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour Organisation as we tee it up in the Land of the Rising Sun for the second consecutive season.
Paul - a winner at the 2022 Mallorca Golf Open - already has three top tens in 2024 and his 65 was his lowest round since his first of the season at the Dubai Invitational.
Starting on the tenth, he birdied the 11th, 14th, 15th and 18th to turn in 31 and a 45-footer on the second handed him the solo lead.
Another birdie on the next got him to six under and while he made two bogeys to a single birdie on the way in, he was pleased with his day's work.
"I putted really nicely," he said. "My putting coach Mike came to Arizona two weeks ago and we changed quite a few things because that was the first time I saw him off site so it was a better time to change some stuff and it worked really nicely.
"I was hitting it OK, nothing special, and I capitalised on a lot of my chances."
Ikemura has two wins on this week's co-sanctioning tour and he made four birdies in five holes from the second, adding another three on the back nine but also making two bogeys.
"I just tried not to make a bogey but I made a few bogeys in the morning," he said. "In that situation, I managed to make birdies, which made my game good overall.
"My ball-striking was great and my putting distance control was pretty good."
Shimizu was bogey-free in his round, picking up shots on the third, eighth, 11th, 12th and 16th.
"Today, my short-game and putting went well," he said. "I didn’t overthink overall and just kept playing my game.
"So far this season, my ball-striking has been good, so I need to keep what I have been doing. By doing so, I will be able to be in contention."
Yoshida made four birdies in a row from the third and joined the lead with another at the 14th before recovering from a bogey on the 17th with a birdie on the last.
"I’m happy to play under par today," he said. "There are still three more days so I don’t want to think about the win. I just want to finish well."
Starting from the 10th, Ko recorded four birdies in his bogey-free back nine to join the leaders when he returned to complete his round on Friday, following a top five finish on his last start at the Hero Indian Open.
Nakajima, Kinoshita, Inamori, Syme and Jordan were all bogey-free in their 66s, while Söderberg dropped a single shot and Jarvis had two blemishes.
Li made an eagle at the par-four tenth to go with four birdies and two bogeys, while Bairstow and Kawamura recorded eagles of their own at the 18th.
Ren Yonezawa made the tenth hole-in-one of the season as he holed a six iron from 188 yards on the par-three 13th.

Gen. Eisenhower's grandson educates tour group for D-Day anniversary | Georgiana Vines
David Eisenhower , grandson of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower , Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War II, says Americans went to Normandy, France, 80 years ago to help liberate the French from the Nazis because they understood what a free country means.
There are times and situations where people make sacrifices to show they have respect for human values and dignity, he said.
Eisenhower spoke on June 4 at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, France, where thousands of American soldiers are buried, in a special ceremony at a pole where an American flag flies. It was included in a two-week trip to Celtic lands and the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy that I took, with veterans in the group joining Eisenhower to place a wreath at the flagpole during the ceremony.
Eisenhower and his wife, Julie Nixon Eisenhower , were guests of Gohagan and Company, a travel agency in Chicago, that arranged the trip.
The ceremony at the flagpole was a substitute for another spot at the cemetery that became unavailable as preparations were made for the actual celebration of D-Day on June 6. Some of the five landing areas of the Allied Forces in 1944 also were closed to all but locals and dignitaries like U.S. President Joe Biden , King Charles III of the United Kingdom, French President Emmanuel Macron, and their wives. But the small villages in both Normandy and parts of England had activities before and after the official D-Day celebration that brought tourists to the area. Many American flags were flying throughout the communities during our visit.
At the June 4 ceremony, we sang the U.S. national anthem; as part of his talk, Eisenhower read names of our group’s family members who had participated in D-Day; and then we had a moment of silence at the end. Many tears were shed as we stood near the white marble crosses and Stars of David above the graves.
Clyde Maxwell , a retired veteran who assisted Eisenhower in placing the wreath, said this: “A very moving experience. I sincerely regret that most of our young people today have no appreciation for the sacrifices these young men, some as young as 16, made for our country so that we might enjoy the many freedoms we have today.” Maxwell, an 83-year-old retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, lives in Rabun Gap, Georgia.
Dwight David Eisenhower II is more than the 76-year-old grandson of the late general. The grandfather, who died in 1969 at age 78, also was the U.S. president in 1953-61 but preferred to be remembered for his wartime service. The younger Eisenhower, for whom the U.S. presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland is named, has taken advantage of his place in history and become a noted historian of World War II and the Cold War.
His 1986 bestseller, “Eisenhower at War 1943-1945,” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history. He is a public policy fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. A book recommended for our trip was “Going Home to Glory: A Memoir of Life with Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969,” written by the grandson with his wife, the daughter of the late President Richard Nixon .
The Eisenhowers joined the tour sponsored by Gohagan as we cruised on Le Dumont d’Urville, a French cruise line owned by Ponant, and David Eisenhower gave a lecture, “Triumph and Tragedy,” on a day we were at sea. Once we got to the Normandy region, our group was spread out on six buses, with the Eisenhowers eventually joining each bus to answer questions and make comments about the area.
The couple was very approachable. On the day the tour went to Omaha Beach to walk the shore or along a sidewalk that took us to German bunkers left as their own monuments, Susan Crabtree of Knoxville, my roommate on the trip, and I came upon David and Julie Eisenhower talking to some of our travel companions on the sidewalk. They graciously agreed to be photographed by all who made the request.
When we arrived at Omaha Beach, the tide was high. David Eisenhower observed while we were being photographed, “The tide has already gone out several hundred yards since we arrived.” The tide was a factor when the troops landed on the beaches 80 years ago.
David Eisenhower’s talk aboard the ship was about his grandfather’s key role in the success of the Normandy invasion as well as issues that were unsettled after World War II and others that arose that influenced future presidential campaigns. He described his grandfather’s planning and supervision of the Normandy campaign as methodical and said he was a man of great determination. The five-star general, nicknamed “Ike,” is a revered figure in France and England.
A new statue of Gen. Eisenhower was dedicated in the town of Sainte-Mère-Église the day before we visited on June 4, our local guide told us. Flowers arrangements were at the base of the statue in a show of appreciation. On the day we visited the town, the streets were full of people, some in uniform for reenactments, while others were driving period jeeps. Street vendors abounded and pubs were busy.
Then in England on June 6, a visit was made to the village of Southwick , which became the forward base of the high command in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. Eisenhower was known to quaff the local ale at the Golden Lion Pub, which is still in business. Other commanders there when decisions were made about the Normandy invasion were British Field Marshal Bernard Law “Monty” Montgomery and British naval officer Bertram Home Ramsay .
The village was preparing for post-June 6 activities, including taping X’s on windows as the English people did during World War II to keep the glass from shattering if bombs hit.
On the ship, Eisenhower was not the only speaker, with other talks on Anglo-American relations, immigration and ethnicity, and 19th-century American history. Ken Gormley , president and professor of law at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, discussed President Eisenhower’s challenges with McCarthyism, the Little Rock Crisis and America’s conflict over civil rights. As president, Eisenhower’s approach was “the middle way,” or even a “quiet way,” which he considered more effective, Gormley said. He is considered an authority on American presidents and the U.S. Constitution.
Another speaker was Allen Packwood , director of the Sir Winston Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. He discussed the complexity of the Normandy invasion and Churchill’s leadership at a time when the British prime minister “didn’t want to fight in France. He wanted to defend Britain,” he said.
Packwood was in Knoxville in 2006 as part of a program on Churchill sponsored by the now University of Tennessee’s Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs . Packwood will return to Knoxville in July to speak at a program on World War II sponsored by the East Tennessee Historical Society. The society’s CEO, Warren Dockter , is a former research fellow at Clare Hall at Cambridge and said he considers Packwood “a mentor.”

One sento stalwart with a decidedly retro vibe is Atami-yu , a fixture in Tokyo’s Kagurazaka neighborhood since 1954. The geisha of Kagurazaka used to visit twice a day, first to get ready for work, and then to wash away their makeup and their fatigue at the end of a long evening. These days Atami-yu attracts a diverse range of clients, including international visitors looking for an authentic sento experience. The water in the ofuro is still heated by burning wood and, like many Tokyo sento, the walls are decorated with a mural of Mt. Fuji, which is thought to bring prosperity.

We had a great tour guide (Miharu). Very sweet and knowledgeable she gave us alot of history but also insight into Japanese culture. It was an amazing experience with so many different places and activities.
We gained great appreciation for the culture and history of Japan through the sites we visited. The transportation was comfortable and convenient, and our guide, Trend, was outstanding, knowledgeable and entertaining. The accommodations were terrific, and it was so convenient to have two meals included each day. We enjoyed every aspect of the tour and we'd highly recommend it to others!
This tour was amazing with everything so well organized. The transportation was comfortable, accommodation was great (pretty much got 4-star hotels) and all the important touristy places were covered. It'd be hard for anyone to do the same itinerary on their own for sure. My fav. aspect of the tour is that it was not rushed and had ample time at each of the spots making it more enjoyable. Most importantly, our guide TREND was brilliant. She did an excellent job in taking care of the group, keeping it entertaining and educative. She always ensured we were all comfortable everywhere and especially in the restaurants where the menu was hard to understand given I had dietary restrictions leaving few choices. I'd recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for the highlights of Japan.
We had a wonderful tour.
We had a trip of a lifetime! Our guide Joyce and driver, Yokomi-san were very professional and timely. We will miss them! They were very friendly and ensured our children (11 and 14) had an incredible experience! Joyce was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information about the sites we were seeing, made sure we had our tickets and did not lose anyone. We had plenty of time at each attraction to walk around, get snacks and use facilities - we never felt rushed or that we were wasting time. Sadly, there was too many clouds at Hakone to see anything. We had spent a lot of time riding to get there and saw nothing, so we ate the black egg and took photos, which was still memorable. The onsen hotel is the most beautiful hotel ever! We enjoyed using the family onsen and the kaiseki dinner.

7. Group size. Tour companies that have smaller groups tend to be much more mindful of the environment and the impact they are leaving. It's a lot easier to meet people in a group of 10-15 than it is in a group of 60. I don't like to go on tours with more than 15 people on them.
