Learn more about North Macedonia (Macedonia)

Best time to visit north macedonia.

North Macedonia has a climate somewhere between a transitional continental and Mediterranean climate, which can vary greatly between seasons and regions. The country’s mountainous areas can be subjected to brutally cold winters (December to February), while the lower-lying areas can reach 104°C during summer (June to September). Between May and September is the best time to visit, unless you’re into skiing.

Culture and customs

Centuries-old traditions still take place, many of which incorporate the cultures of rulers gone by (notably the Ottoman Empire who ruled for 500 years). Locals will proudly put on their best folk costume to play traditional music, dance traditional dances (such as the ‘Oro’ circle dance), or take part in rituals passed down for generations. Ethnic North Macedonians – who make up the majority of the population (about 67%) and are largely Orthodox Christians – are frequently at odds with the country's notable Albanian population (about 23%), who are predominantly Muslim. Despite their differences, both groups tend to share conservative and patriarchal values. Visitors should be aware that women are expected to dress modestly and both men and women are expected to cover their knees and shoulders when visiting a mosque or church.

Eating and drinking

North Macedonian cuisine is a delicious mix of Balkan, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences. Rustic dishes are made with plenty of locally grown produce (thanks to the country’s warm and pleasant climate) and fresh fish from the country’s rivers and lakes.

Must-try foods in North Macedonia

1. Tavche gravche

North Macedonia’s version of baked beans is also their national dish. White beans are first boiled and then baked with onions and herbs in a clay pot to create a fragrant and healthy meal.

2. Pastrmajlijada

An oval-shaped bread pie is topped with cubes of meat (usually pork or lamb) and baked to create this savory snack sometimes referred to as a ‘North Macedonian pizza’.

3. Shopska salad

Chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and olives topped with plenty of salty white cheese. Similar to a Greek salad, shopska is a staple served at almost every restaurant.

Geography and environment

Located in southeast Europe , North Macedonia shares its border with Serbia , Bulgaria , Greece , and Albania. Breathtaking mountains – perfect for hiking and climbing in the summer and skiing in the winter – give way to fertile flats. The Dinaric Alps slice through the west and the Vardar Valley occupies much of the central region. Despite being landlocked, North Macedonia contains many rivers and lakes, including the magnificently scenic Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe.

History and government

Early history.

Even by Balkan standards, North Macedonia’s history is characterized by complexity and controversy. Going back to the days of Alexander the Great (the country’s favorite son), North Macedonia has been pin-balled between external powers, from the Romans to the Byzantines, the Serbs to the Ottoman Turks, and the Bulgarians to the Greeks. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that the country officially attained its status as an independent nation – and even that remains a point of contention in certain circles.

From the sixth century AD until the fourteenth, the territory was wrestled to and fro between the Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgars, and Serbs before eventually falling to the Ottoman Empire in 1371. The country remained under Turkish rule until the empire’s decline in the eighteenth century, then was once again split up but this time between Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Various pushes for independence and ‘reunion’ with Bulgaria were then stymied by the two World Wars and the advent of communism.

Recent history

At the conclusion of World War II, the country was incorporated into the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia under the leadership of Tito – an era during which, by and large, the territory prospered. With the collapse of European communism, however, came new calls for Macedonian independence, and the state peacefully ceded from the republic in 1992.

Wary of ‘Macedonia’ being used as the country’s proposed name due to implied claims to Aegean Macedonia, Greece made its objections known and the compromise ‘The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’ was eventually arrived at. Greek ire was re-aroused in 1994, culminating in its enforcement of an economic embargo that was eventually lifted upon Macedonia’s changing of its flag and agreeing to discussions about its name. The country evaded being embroiled in the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s but experienced a potentially catastrophic civil conflict from 1997-2001 over tensions with its sizeable Albanian population. Hostilities were becalmed with a NATO ceasefire, but the Albanian-Macedonian relationship is still a touchy subject that’s best avoided.

In 2019 Macedonia agreed to change its name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.

Festivals and events

The galičnik wedding festival.

Back in the good old days, the villagers of Galičnik had only one day each year when North Macedonian couples could get married: the 12th of July. These days, starry-eyed lovers can take their vows on whichever day they please, but for one lucky couple, a traditional wedding ceremony is still a possibility. Held on the weekend closest to the 12th of July, the Galičnik Wedding Festival commemorates the custom with dances, elaborate dresses, and a horse bridle being placed on the bride as a test of her obedience. Any North Macedonian couple that has already been married in the civil service can apply for the role of an official couple, with the winning entrant generally being the one with the prettiest bride.

Tikveski Grozdober (Grape Carnival)

Each September, Kavadarci, a small town in North Macedonia’s seriously scenic wine-growing region, plays host to the Tikveški Grozdober festival. A celebration of both the town’s liberation and the beginning of the grape harvest, the festival swells with food stalls and music concerts and culminates in an extravagantly costumed carnival procession through the town’s main streets. Oh, and much wine drinking.

Ilinden National Festival of Song and Dance

The oldest folk festival in the country, the Ilinden Days, celebrates all the folk cultural edifices that have come to represent North Macedonian identity over the years. Folk songs and dancing take center stage here, all performed in traditional garb with traditional instruments. Held over four days, it provides a fascinating insight into traditional North Macedonian culture and preserves its history.

Pivo Fest Prilep Beer Fest

North Macedonia’s breweries aren’t as prolific as its wineries, but beer is still a pretty big player in national culture and deemed worthy of a festival. The first Pivo Fest Prilep was held in 2003, and, in contrast to many of the country’s other tradition-orientated festivals, the focus here is on live music, grilled meats, skimpy attire, and abundant ales. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s now one of the most popular summer events in the country.

Carnival Procka

Kicking off three days before the Easter fast begins, the Procka Carnival, which is also held in Prilep, is a celebration of the unconditional forgiveness demonstrated by Jesus for his fellow humans. During this brief holiday, the young ask for forgiveness from their elders, who reply by saying ‘you are forgiven from me and from God.’ If this all sounds a bit somber (not to mention presumptuous), there are also great feasting opportunities in preparation for the fasting ahead, and things are livened up with parades of highly decorative ‘anything goes’ costumes.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Saints Cyril and Methodius Day

Republic Day

Independence Day

1941 Partisan Day

Please note that the dates of  North Macedonia's public holidays  may vary.

The narrow cobbled streets of Skopje’s Old Bazaar (Carsija), the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul, offer a more unique shopping experience. Step back in time to the days of Ottoman rule and browse craftsmen shops selling unique jewelry, handmade textiles, and terracotta pots while locals sit outside cafes savoring sweet desserts and strong coffee.

Some stores in North Macedonia allow travelers to shop tax-free. Look for a blue and white ‘Tax-Free’ sign in store windows and make sure to ask for a Global Blue refund form when making your purchase. Get this form validated by a customs official at the airport when you are leaving the country (they’ll want to see the item and receipt as well), then take it to the Global Blue refund office to get your money back.

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to visit North Macedonia?

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in North Macedonia?

Tipping is not customary in North Macedonia, but a 10-15% tip at a nice restaurant will be very much appreciated. Some top-end restaurants may include a service charge, in which case there is no need to tip additionally unless the service has really been excellent.

What is the internet access like in North Macedonia?

Internet access exists in the major towns and connections are generally very good.

Can I use my cell phone while in North Macedonia?

Roaming agreements are in place with most of the major international phone companies, and coverage is generally pretty good.

ATMs can be found in larger cities and tourist areas but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Is North Macedonia a safe destination for LGBTQI-travelers?

Discretion is highly advised for LGBTQI travelers in North Macedonia. A staunchly conservative nation, the Rainbow Europe index continually ranks North Macedonia’s gay rights among the worst in the region. There are no laws protecting the LGBTQI community from discrimination and travelers are advised to avoid public displays of affection. That being said, there is a small gay scene in Skopje.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex  or   ILGA   for further research before you travel.

Why did Macedonia change its name to North Macedonia?

After declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Macedonia chose their name, which strained relations with nearby Greece, which also has a region called Macedonia. This has meant that since that time, Greece has blocked Macedonia's entry to NATO and the European Union (EU). In 2019, Macedonia agreed to change their name to North Macedonia and Greece agreed to stop blocking its entry to NATO and the EU.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Landlocked and encircled by its Balkan neighbours, North Macedonia was once part of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. Geographically the country is defined by its mountains, rivers and flat river valleys, all of which provide excellent settings for some real off-beat adventure. Home to three national parks, two distinct mountain ranges and one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe (Lake Ohrid), North Macedonia is for the most part an undiscovered gem that provides an authentic insight into a rich European culture that has sadly disappeared from many other parts of the region.

With a history that can trace its origins back to antiquity and the Kingdom of Paeonia, North Macedonia has a visible heritage that still recalls the influences of the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Serbs. These rich traditions can still be found in its architecture and its poetry as well as its food and music. North Macedonian cuisine successfully blends a diverse mix of Mediterranean (Greek) and Middle Eastern (Turkish) influences, along with a healthy sprinkling of Italian, German and Hungarian flavours. Meanwhile the country’s forests are abundant with flora and fauna including bears, wild boars, wolves and Eurasian lynx. Little wonder then that its sheep are guarded by the impressive Šarplaninec (Yugoslav Shepherd Dog).

North Macedonia may remain one of Europe’s poorest country’s economically, but in terms of its natural and cultural assets it punches well above its weight and, for getting off the beaten track, there are few destinations on the continent that can match it.

A historical and cultural melting pot, Macedonia has a rich mix of Greek, Roman and Ottoman heritage. The ancient Kingdom of Macedon dates back to 808 BC but modern Macedonia has a complex national identity, in part due to contestation around the name of the country and some its national heroes. In February 2019, Macedonia changed its official name to North Macedonia after a long-running name dispute with Greece.

Despite a complex and somewhat turbulent history, this tiny, landlocked European nation may be off the beaten track but it offers dramatic mountain landscapes, sleepy lakeside villages, a seemingly infinite number of churches and monasteries and striking architectural contrasts. There is much to be discovered here, including some truly breathtaking natural wonders.

Skopje, the captial, is an interesting and confronting mix of old and new. The city is home to largest bazaar in the Balkans outside of Istanbul, set in its Ottoman old town. Ohrid, the most popular destination in Macedonia, is known for its glittering lake and 365 churches (one for every day of the year). The Ohrid Lake is thought to be more than 4 million years old, making it the oldest lake in Europe and for the churches the city is nicknamed the ‘Jerusalem of the Balkan’.

A History of the Balkans: Albania and North Macedonia

Sprawling eastwards from the doorstep of Western Europe, the Balkan region has had a long, convoluted and fascinating history. From here, the thread is taken up by the stories of Albania and North Macedonia, two overlooked but fascinating examples of Balkan statehood in the 20th century.

The Need to Know

Getting around.

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Macedonia has a well-developed intercity bus service, with many buses running out from Skopje to regional areas. Train services are reliable but slow, with train lines linking Skopje to smaller towns. Bear in mind that Ohrid does not have a train station. Taxis are commonly available and relatively inexpensive, though avoid entering a cab with no taxi meter to avoid getting ripped off.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. Geography, Environment, & Weather

Macedonia is a landlocked country, covering 25,713 square miles. Much of the terrain in the north and western areas of the country is rugged, with mountains ringing the country’s borders. The Vardar river flows through the middle of the country, while many lakes punctuate the landscape of Macedonia, including Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest lakes in the world.

Macedonia experiences hot summers and cold winters, especially in the mountainous regions. Depending on when you intend to travel, check the weather reports and dress accordingly.

World heritage sites

Macedonia has 1 UNESCO World Heritage Site, with another 3 on the Tentative List. You can view the official list of the sites here (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/mk). The listed sites currently include:

Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region, an area of rich history and charming local architecture built around the stunning Lake Ohrid

Festivals & Events

Numerous festivals and events dot the calendar in Macedonia. Independence Day is a landmark annual event in Macedonia; held on the 8th of September, Independence Day commemorates the anniversary of the country’s exit from Yugoslavia, and is celebrated with parades, fireworks, free music concerts, and themed dance performances. The Balkan Folkore Festival is a major event in the country, with over 40,000 people gathering to share traditional stories and tales through dance, song, rites and poetry. The local practices and traditions of Macedonia’s regional areas are preserved in events such as the Galičnik Wedding Festival, whereupon thousands descend upon the village of Galičnik to witness and celebrate the marriage of one particular lucky couple over two days with music, dancing and feasting.

Eating & Drinking

Macedonian cooking is characterised by the use of vegetables, meats and spices. Capsicums (bell peppers) are widely used in Macedonian cuisine, utilised as a key ingredient in many dishes, or in the form of a relish or spread. One such dish is Tavče gravče, the national dish of Macedonia. Made from capsicums, onions, beans, and spices, tavče gravče makes for a hearty dinner. Polneti Piperki (stuffed capsicums) are another popular dish, with capsicums stuffed with rice, ground meat, chopped vegetables and spices, then roasted in an oven. Southern Balkan culinary influences feature in Macedonian cuisine, with musaka (a savoury dish made from layers of potatoes, vegetables and/or meat) and turli tava (a stew made from okra, potatoes, eggplant, capsicum, meat, rice, and onion) reflecting some of the common ingredients and tastes of the southern Balkans.

Macedonians love their coffee, with over 5,000 cafes, coffeehouses, and kafeanas (bistros which serve coffee and alcoholic beverages) in operation in the country. The national alcoholic beverage of Macedonia is rakija, a fruit brandy that comes in many varieties.

Tour Reviews

It is hard to believe that such a small country can contain so much dramatic scenery. Icecaps and glaciers, huge waterfalls, volcanos and hot bubbling mud, and those wonderful fjords and high mountain passes

Participant 2016

Iceland cultural and wilderness small group tour

Our guide Filiz was wonderful, very well informed, historical insights very helpful, her care for our well being exceptional. Could not have wished for a better tour leader.

Participant 2017

Small group tour of Ancient Turkey

We felt safe in Turkey and found the people friendly and helpful. Prices were excellent and the food almost universally magnificent. There is so much to see in the natural and built environment and the wonderful archaeological sites. It is sad to see the ordinary people and businesses suffering from the lack of tourists. Mary B. Sep '17

The country was apparently calm and safe. People were friendly and helpful. Such a pity there has been such a down turn in tourism. Ros & Tony S. Sep '17

Every day was different with so much to see and do. Volcanoes, craters (including the pseudo ones), bubbling mud pools, and the active Strokkur Geyser, the bird life, black sand beaches, and those beautiful Icelandic horses. The time flew by...

The geographical wonders offered by Iceland and Greenland left me in awe. The grandeur and spectacle of the countryside is breathtaking. Our leader (Rob) was excellent: well-researched, friendly, organized and good-humoured.

I was impressed by the number of places we visited. It was a very full itinerary which I like. We saw things of interest every day. I see no fault with the tour.

Anglo French Tour | Normandy, Brittany, Channel Islands tour

Our guide was a great ambassador for his country, wide knowledge of literature, history, customs, industry, fishing - also a perceptive and sensitive person who inter-acted so willingly with all of us!

What is the time zone?

Macedonia has a single time zone, Central European Standard Time (UTC+1). Daylight savings start on the last Sunday of March and finish on the last Sunday of October.

Is tipping customary in Macedonia?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping is not common in Macedonia, though tips are appreciated. A general rule for restaurants is to leave a tip of 10% if a service charge has not already been added to the bill.

What is the internet access like in Macedonia?

Wifi is widely available in Macedonia, with most hotels, cafes and restaurants providing free Wifi.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Macedonia?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Macedonia. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Macedonia

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although some locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of denars in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Before departing on your trip, contact your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.

JetBlue basic economy tickets to allow carry-on bags, will remain 'final group to board'

travel groups macedonia

  • JetBlue passengers with basic economy tickets will soon be able to bring a carry-on bag in addition to their personal item.
  • The change takes effect Sept. 4.
  • United Airlines will be one of the only remaining major U.S. carriers that does not allow carry-on bags with a basic economy ticket.

Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the date carry-on bags would be available with Blue Basic fares. They will start to be included with those basic economy tickets on Sept. 6.

JetBlue passengers with basic economy tickets will soon be able to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a personal item – so long as space permits.

The airline announced Tuesday that its Blue Basic fares will include carry-on baggage starting Sept. 6, regardless of when the traveler purchased their ticket.

“Carry-on bags are an important piece of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another carrier’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner,” JetBlue’s President Marty St. George, said in a statement. “We’re always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences. This is a win-win as we improve the customer experience and keep JetBlue competitive in our industry.”

JetBlue customers previously had to buy a higher-priced ticket package or pay extra for an even more space seat if they wanted to stow a carry-on in the overhead bin.

When the change takes effect, United Airlines will be one of the only remaining major U.S. carriers that does not allow carry-on bags with a basic economy ticket.

Cruising Altitude: Why airport bathrooms are gaining attention

All airlines still allow a personal item, like a backpack, purse, or laptop bag, which can fit under the seat ahead, on basic economy tickets.

JetBlue acknowledges that even with the allowance, some customers holding Blue Basic tickets may still have to gate check their rollaboards.

“While many of JetBlue’s aircraft are outfitted with larger overhead bins to accommodate more customers, in the event of space constraints, customers may be required to check carry-on bags at the gate for no additional charge,” the airline’s statement said. “Customers who want to board earlier to utilize overhead bin space will now find even more value in purchasing the more flexible Blue fare –JetBlue’s second lowest fare that comes with free advanced seat selection, no cancellation or change fees and general boarding. Blue Basic customers remain the final group to board.”

Group Travel Insurance: A Comprehensive Guide

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Group travel insurance is a single policy that covers groups of 10 or more.
  • Everyone in the group must have the same itinerary and travel to the same destination.
  • Shop early and compare quotes to get the best deal.

Whether preparing for a large family reunion in another state, booking a business trip with colleagues, or traveling with your college crew to a new country, you might consider group travel insurance. Group travel insurance provides financial protection for trips of 10 or more groups. But apart from the party size requirements, it functions the same as other travel insurance policies.

Here's what you need to know about group travel insurance — how to determine if you need it, different options, and tips to secure the best deal.

Group travel insurance is a single travel insurance policy that protects everyone on a trip. The policies are available for groups of 10 or more. Unlike other insurance policies that only cover one person or family travel insurance that only covers related travelers, group travel insurance can cover any group traveling together. You do not have to be related.

Group travel insurance policies usually offer comprehensive coverage, including standard protections against lost luggage, legal fees, medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and more.

Key Benefits of Group Travel Insurance

Cost-effectiveness.

Group travel insurance may be cheaper than buying separate policies for each individual traveler. Insurance companies may provide discounts for insuring multiple people, as this lowers administrative overhead per person. This is similar to how auto insurers offer rate reductions for consumers who insure multiple people under one policy.

It's worth noting that group travel insurance costs depend on the insurer and your trip details. Comparing quotes can help you find the best rates on the coverages you need.

You can find our guide to the best cheap travel insurance here.

Simplified management

Group travel insurance might make sense if everyone in your group has the same itinerary and travels to the same destination. The main perk of group travel insurance versus separate policies for each person is that it streamlines the purchasing process. You can buy one policy instead of multiple.

But to make it work, your group needs to be organized. This is especially true if group members intend to split the cost of the policy. It's crucial to communicate well with the people in your group and ensure everyone is on the same page.

Coverage Options

Common coverage features.

Most group travel insurance policies offer comprehensive coverage, which usually covers common travel issues like cancellations and medical emergencies.

Here's what comprehensive group travel insurance covers :

  • Trip cancellation insurance: If you need to cancel your trip, this coverage reimburses you for the cost of travel. Each policy includes a list of cancellation reasons that are covered.
  • Travel insurance for baggage: This covers the cost of stolen or missing luggage.
  • Emergency medical evacuation insurance : Covers the cost of transportation from one location to another due to an emergency medical situation.
  • Travel medical insurance: If you need medical care due to illness or injury while traveling, this part of the policy covers the cost.
  • Trip interruption travel insurance: If you have to cut your trip short due to an unforeseen emergency, this helps pay for travel plan changes.
  • Trip delay travel insurance: If there are delays to your flight or another aspect of your trip, this covers extra costs associated with the delay. It might include reimbursement for meals or hotel expenses.

Additional coverage options

You can customize your travel insurance policy with coverage options at an additional premium. These add-ons can be helpful to provide adequate coverage for your group's specific needs. Some examples include:

  • Adventure and sports coverage: For planned activities that involved increased risk (e.g., hiking, scuba diving, skiing, etc.)
  • Special events coverage: For cancellations, interruptions, or other losses that occur during planned events (e.g., weddings, corporate events, excursions, etc.)
  • Equipment coverage: For damage, loss, or theft of equipment or gear brought on the trip (e.g., sports equipment, tech, etc.)
  • Pre-existing condition waiver : For those with pre-existing conditions to receive travel medical coverage while traveling

Choosing the right group travel insurance

Assessing group needs.

Assessing your group's needs can help you choose the right group travel insurance. Some factors to consider include but aren't limited to the duration and destination of your trip, the type of travelers and their needs (including their ages and any pre-existing conditions), planned activities, and the group's budget.

Comparing insurance providers

Depending on the details of your trip, group travel insurance might be cheaper than purchasing individual policies for each traveler. But that is not always the case. As you shop for group travel insurance, there are steps you can take to ensure you get the best deal.

Get multiple quotes

It's smart to compare quotes from several providers. Multiple quotes allow you to compare coverage options and pricing. You can use a travel insurance comparison site like SquareMouth or TravelInsurance.com. Or you can contact providers directly. Once you know the price range for protection, you can select the provider that seems like the best fit.

The best time to buy travel insurance is right after you make your first trip deposit. Your policy kicks in right away, which is helpful if an event occurs that forces you to cancel your trip. Additionally, an early purchase can be necessary to qualify for certain riders, such as pre-existing condition coverage and CFAR travel insurance .

Application and enrollment process

You should be prepared to provide the following information about your group when fielding quotes from travel insurance companies.

  • Trip dates
  • Travelers' names and date of birth
  • Destination
  • Initial trip deposit date
  • Cost of trip per traveler (prepaid and nonrefundable expenses)

Your insurance company may ask for additional information, such as pre-existing medical conditions and planned activities.

Policy management and claims

The coverage you select applies to everyone in the group. Each group member can make individual claims, which is helpful if only one or two people need to make a claim. But if everyone is involved, the entire group can file claims.

Special Considerations for Group Travel Insurance

Tailoring policies to group type.

It's important to tailor your insurance policy based on the type of group and the trip to ensure adequate protection. For example, if you're traveling with senior members, you want your policy's medical coverage to include pre-existing conditions. If your trip has physical or outdoor activities, adventure and sports coverage is additional protection worth considering.

A travel insurance agent can help you identify which coverages are necessary for your group's trip and find a policy that works for your group's budget.

Handling diverse member needs

Handling the diverse needs of group members within a single policy requires careful attention to policy details, including coverage specifics and deductibles. Start by thoroughly reviewing the policy to understand the included coverages and associated deductibles. If certain coverages are unnecessary for your group, ask your insurer whether they can be removed to reduce costs.

You may want to look for a policy with add-ons or customizable options. This allows you to tailor the coverage to meet the specific needs of different group members. Additionally, consider raising the deductible to lower the premium. However, ensure the deductible amount is affordable for all members in case a claim needs to be filed. This ensures your group has adequate protection while accommodating the diverse financial needs of the group.

Group travel insurance final recommendations and tips

Best practices for group leaders.

Before your trip, communicate insurance details like coverage inclusions, exclusions, deductibles, and how to file a claim with your group. It also helps to maintain policy documents in case an unexpected event arises.

You and your group should also establish a contingency plan and save your insurance's emergency hotline contact number for medical emergencies, natural disasters, or other travel disruptions.

Resources for further information

For further information on group travel insurance, check out:

  • Insurance companies' websites for information about coverage options, exclusions, and getting a quote.
  • Travel insurance comparison sites allow users to compare policies from multiple providers at once based on coverage, price, and other factors. Some examples of comparison websites include InsureMyTrip , Squaremouth, and VisitorsCoverage .
  • Travel agencies to help you book your trip and pick group travel insurance based on your itinerary.
  • Consumer review sites like Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs to read first-hand testimonials by real users on their experience with a company.

Group travel insurance FAQs

Group travel insurance typically requires a minimum of 10 travelers to qualify for group travel insurance, but this varies by provider.

Yes, many group travel insurance policies offer options for various activities specific to the group's needs and travel itinerary, such as adventure and sports, special events, and equipment coverage.

Group travel insurance can be more cost-effective per person than individual policies, especially for larger groups. Compare quotes from various insurance providers to get the best deal on the coverages you need.

If one member  of a group travel insurance plan has an issue, that member can file a claim with the travel insurance company individually. That's why it's important for every member to be familiar with the claims process in case an issue arises.

A group leader should consider the group's specific needs, planned activities, destination-specific risks, and the group's budget when choosing a travel insurance policy.
