Coronavirus (COVID-19): international travel

Planning foreign travel and information on travel rules.

Visiting Scotland from another country

There are no covid travel rules in place for people arriving in Scotland from abroad.

You do not need to:

  • complete a Passenger Locator Form
  • take any covid tests before you leave for Scotland, or after you arrive
  • isolate when you arrive

Normal travel rules apply.

When returning home or travelling to other countries outside Scotland, you should check your own government’s travel advice for further help. Even though Scotland does not have covid travel rules, other countries may.

If you live in Scotland and you're travelling abroad

Even though Scotland’s rules have ended, other countries may still have travel rules in place. If you live in Scotland, you should  check GOV.UK’s foreign travel advice   for every country you're planning to visit.

COVID-19 vaccination for travel is only available if you’re traveling to a country that requires proof of coronavirus vaccination for entry and you do not have the number of doses required. There are very few countries in the world that require proof of COVID status to enter. Most countries have no requirements at all, and some will allow you to enter if you take a coronavirus test prior to travel.

If you need a coronavirus vaccine, please contact your local health board to discuss your circumstances.

If you need to prove which vaccinations you’ve had when you arrive in another country, you can normally use your NHS Scotland COVID Status app to do this.

Future changes to travel advice

New covid travel rules in Scotland, or any other country, may be brought in at short notice. You should always check the latest advice for each country you’re planning to travel to before booking your trip and before you go.

'Do not travel' warning ahead of heavy rain and life-threatening flooding

The Met Office has issued an amber weather alert for flooding and heavy rain presenting a danger to life.

More on this story, insight up to three weeks of rain to fall over the weekend, life-threatening flooding from heavy rain as amber warning issued.

Scots have been urged not to travel and to plan ahead amid a warning of life-threatening flooding over the weekend.

Scottish Government Resilience Room officials met on Friday to gather and assess the latest updates from the Met Office, SEPA, Transport Scotland, Police Scotland and utilities ahead of the warning being implemented.

Justice secretary and minister for resilience Angela Constance said: “The potential impacts of this amber warning for rain are severe so people need to plan ahead and pay close attention to all travel advice, which is likely to be updated over the course of the weekend.

“Flood alerts are also in place and residents in affected areas should stay clear of any floodwater and consider making a flood plan for their homes or business. Information and advice is available on the Ready Scotland website.

“The Scottish Government and partners will continue to monitor the situation closely and Ministers are being kept updated.”

Prolonged downpours are expected to lead to widespread disruption across central Scotland from early on Saturday morning.

STV meteorologist Sean Batty warned that up to three weeks of rain could fall from Saturday into Sunday.

Flood alerts have been issued across 14 areas of the country by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

It comes after the Met Office issued multiple yellow warnings throughout the week.

The amber warning for rain covers Inverclyde, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, East and West Dunbartonshire, Argyll and Lochaber, parts of Stirling, Perthshire, Aberdeenshire and the Highlands.

It comes into force at 3am on Saturday and continues until 6am on Sunday. A yellow warning for rain remains in place for large parts of central and northern Scotland throughout Saturday until early on Sunday morning.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) called the weather a “major rainfall event”.

ScotRail has also warned customers that there will be significant disruption to services on Saturday, including in the Highlands and central Scotland, and in the Glasgow, Perth, and Stirling areas.

Services will be suspended from 1am on Saturday until Sunday morning on the West Highland line from Oban, Mallaig and Fort William, Helensburgh Central/Balloch to Dalmuir line and the Highland Mainline between Perth and Inverness.

Services between Dalmuir and Glasgow will operate.

For those routes, ScotRail is advising customers not to travel as no rail replacement travel is available.

Most other routes across the network will be affected by speed restrictions as a safety precaution meaning services may be subject to delay or cancellation.

Customers are advised that they should travel only when necessary, to expect delays, and to check their journey before travelling.

David Simpson, ScotRail service delivery director, said: “The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy rain for parts of Scotland, which could see over a month’s worth expected to fall on areas of the Highlands and central Scotland, as well as Glasgow, Perth, and Stirling.

“We know the impact that the withdrawal of some train services will have on customers but it’s a necessary step to ensure the safety of our staff and customers due to the severe rainfall.

“As a precautionary measure in order to keep our customers and staff safe, speed restrictions will also be in place across most routes in Scotland, which will result in extended journey times.

“Customers are advised that they should travel only when necessary, and for those that do, they should check their journey before travelling, and keep an eye on our website, app or social media feeds for live updates.”

Is it safe to travel to Scotland? Travel warnings amid Storm Babet

The Met Office has forecast exceptionally wet conditions across parts of eastern Scotland on Thursday and Friday, with very strong winds in the northern half of the country due to Storm Babet. Wet weather is set to continue across Scotland through Saturday.

As a result, ScotRail has said some services will be withdrawn.

The Met Office says the weather seen during Storm Babet will be exceptional. Meteorologist Alex Burkill says "this isn't usual autumn weather, even for Scotland".

"It is going to be exceptionally wet and very windy, which is why we are going to see some severe disruption," he adds.

Around 350 residents living in the county of Angus have been advised to leave them homes over flooding fears.

This is the first red warning to be put in place since Storm Dennis in February 2020.

Is it safe to travel to Scotland?

Due to the red weather warning, ScotRail has said services will be withdrawn on some routes in the north and north-east of the country.

Customers are advised by ScotRail that they should only travel if necessary on the routes affected by the weather warnings.

From the start of service on Thursday, ScotRail will suspend services between:

Aberdeen and Elgin

Edinburgh and Aberdeen via Fife

Perth and Aberdeen via Dundee

Dunblane and Perth

Perth and Aviemore

Tain and Wick/Thurso

All Fife Circle services

Services between Glasgow Queen Street and Aberdeen/Inverness, and between Edinburgh Waverley and Aberdeen/Inverness will be affected.

Due to the likelihood of flooding and poor driving conditions, customers on these routes are advised not to travel as no alternative transport is available.

David Simpson, ScotRail service delivery director, said: "The Met Office has issued red and amber weather warnings for Storm Babet, with heavy rain across eastern Scotland, and heavy rain and high winds in central and northern Scotland.

"We know the impact that the withdrawal of some train services will have on customers, but our first priority is always to ensure the safety of our staff and customers. This is a necessary step to ensure everyone’s safety during the severe weather.

"In order to keep our customers and staff safe, speed restrictions will be in place as a precautionary measure on other routes in Scotland, which will mean longer journey times.

"For routes in the south and west of Scotland, customers are encouraged to check their journey before setting off, and keep an eye on our website, mobile app, or social media channels for live updates."

Edinburgh Warnings and Dangers

Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital, full of hills, hiking, and additional forms of entertainment for tourists, When planning a trip to Edinburgh, remain cautious of potential scams, including beggar scams and from individuals who seem overly-nice and genuine.

Grave Robbers

One of the biggest issues in Edinburgh is that grave robbing still exists. Digging up graves and removing valuables from others who are deceased is not only despicable but it is also considered a crime. If you are walking in a graveyard during the night and notice suspicious behavior, be sure to call the police to the scene rather than attempting to take matters into your own hands (as you may not know just how dangerous these criminals are in everyday life).

The Old Parts of Edinburgh

Beggars and scammers are on the rise, which is why you should be aware of your surroundings when traveling through Edinburgh, even if you have been to the capital in the past. Walking and hiking trails have seen an increase in robberies, muggings, and beating throughout the area. It is also important to travel in groups or other friends who enjoy walking and hiking the trails to become less of a target so you are able to enjoy your time spent outdoors getting necessary exercise.

If you encounter beggars in the streets, it is best to give food and other supplies to help them to get back on their feet. Some beggars only take money, and may be aggravated at your offer, causing an argument. If a beggar begins begging for money or harassing you for more, walk away from him or her. Ignoring beggars is another way for you to remain less bothered when trying to reach your final destination.

False Advertising

Some stores such as Role Mile Factory Outlet promises customers a discount to $15 to $30 percent off of all merchandise. However, this is simply not true. Upon shopping in the market and reading reviews from customers who use their cell phones, there is proof that the product sold in the marketplace is often the same cost anywhere else in the world, quickly giving the location a bad review from plenty of tourists and regulars looking for a deal.

Edinburgh airport warning to Scotland football fans heading to Germany for Euro 2024

The biggest airport in Scotland has a warning for any Scottish football fan heading for Germany for the opening match of Euro 2024 : “Those sporrans will need to come off.”

The month-long tournament kicks off in Munich on 14 June with the hosts taking on Scotland in the city’s Football Arena.

Edinburgh airport expects to handle 20,000 fans during the group stage of the competition, in which Scotland will also play Switzerland in Cologne and Hungary in Stuttgart.

If Scotland progress to the knock-out stages, thousands more will be booking flights to Germany, coinciding with the start of the Scottish school holidays.

With the capital’s airport expecting record numbers of passengers during the summer, chief executive Gordon Dewar is seeking to ease pressure on the security search operation.

A significant number of fans are expected to wear kilts, which traditionally include a sporran – the small bag worn around the waist, over the kilt, whose name is Gaelic for “purse”.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the festival of football, Mr Dewar said Scotland’s national dress was “not particularly great for the screening process”.

The sporran must be detached from the kilt before the passenger goes through the security checkpoint. The leather and fur pouch should be placed in a tray to go through the scanner.

The concern is that some passengers will be unaware of the requirement until they reach the checkpoint – holding up the queue while they remove the diminutive Caledonian hold-all, and slowing the flow of passengers.

In addition, pat-down searches by security officers are more time-consuming to conduct on men if they are wearing kilts rather than trousers.

Sporran watch: the leather and fur pouch must be detached before passing through airport security

The airport also says: “You might need to factor in a wee bit more extra time just to get everything reattached and repositioned.”

The ceremonial dagger, known as a sgian dubh, which normally sits in the kilt hose, will not be allowed into the aircraft cabin. The ornamental knife should be packed in checked baggage or left behind.

Edinburgh airport has also published a list of key German phrases for football fans .

The handy translations include:

  • Wo ist die nächste Bar? (Where is the nearest bar?)
  • Das war nie Abseits (That was never offside)
  • Wir sind die berühmte Tartan-Armee (We’re the famous Tartan Army)

The odds on Scotland winning the tournament are currently 100-1. England, who have also qualified, are 3-1 favourites.

Scottish Officials Issue Warning Ahead of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Dates

Scotland's capital city officials warned Swifties about what not to do ahead of the pop star's Eras Tour in Edinburgh and even put together a guide to must-see area attractions for fans. ABOVE: Taylor Swift performs Eras Tour at the Groupama Stadium in France.

Scotland is sharing a pointed message aimed at Swifties preparing to travel to its capital ahead of Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour .

The 34-year-old international pop superstar embarked on the European leg of her tour last month, and in just a few days, she'll be arriving in Edinburgh for a string of sold-out shows planned for this upcoming weekend.

With her first of three concerts kicking off on Friday, June 7, at Murrayfield Stadium, the city's officials are warning fans of the 14-time Grammy winner what not to do before and after her shows in a notice posted to the city council's website titled " Edinburgh gets Taylored ."

"We are delighted that Taylor Swift has chosen to bring her tour to our city. We know she and all her loyal Swifties will enjoy true Scottish hospitality and receive a warm welcome to our capital city," the message began.

The official statement went on, sharing a few reminders with Swifties, including that they should "Only travel to Scottish Gas Murrayfield and the surrounding area if you have a ticket," citing a trend that's taken off around the globe where fans without tickets gather in the street outside the arenas to trade friendship bracelets and enjoy the show from afar.

Council members have also asked concertgoers to plan ahead, as public transportation will be crowded and overnight accommodations–like hotel rooms and Airbnbs–are extremely limited.

The post also reminded Swifties to remain mindful of their surroundings while traveling to and from the show. "Please remember, on your way to the stadium, you will be passing through streets where people live. Please respect their homes."

It wasn't all in bad faith, though, as the people who know Edinburgh best also put together several  all-inclusive guides for Swifties looking to experience the culture of Scotland's capital city at its most-toured attractions and must-see spots.
