Why Uganda for a safari

As a safari destination, Uganda is famous for being home to rare mountain gorillas. Per the current mountain gorilla census, Uganda has a record highest number of mountain gorillas in the whole world.

Only three countries offer gorilla trekking safaris, of which Uganda is one. The country’s gorilla trekking stands out because of the huge number of gorillas visitors will see, a magnificent sight to behold these intelligent creatures.

The country is also one of the best settings for an adventurous spirit seeking first-hand wildlife experience. Visitors will see the Big Five (African Cape Buffalo, African tree climbing Lions, African Leopards, Southern White Rhino, African Bush Elephants) in the country.

From the mountain gorillas in the Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park and Budongo, Snow-capped mountains of the Rwenzori to the source of the Nile, Uganda is absolutely an outstanding safari destination to visit.

Uganda is a unique destination offering a wonderful mix of savannah and forest parks. Gorilla safaris and chimp trekking are highlights, but many smaller primates can be seen as well.

Uganda also offers great savannah safaris, and all of the Big Five are present.

Primates are especially well represented in Uganda. Patas monkey, red-tailed monkey, l’Hoest’s monkey, golden monkey, Ugandan red colobus and Uganda mangabe are some of the special species, many found near Lake Bunyonyi in south-western Uganda.

Uganda is also home to a wide variety of antelope species. The Uganda kob, the national antelope, is locally common, while the rare sitatunga antelope is found in six national parks in the country but rarely seen.

Lions are quite common and can be found hunting Uganda kob whilst African bush elephants live in both the grassland and woodland areas whilst Cape buffalo live in dense forests.

In the rivers, lakes and swampy areas, hippos can be seen near the Ntungwe River in Queen Elizabeth NP whilst crocodiles inhabit Murchison Falls National Park and leopards in the savannas and forest areas of Lake Mburo National Park.

Giraffes can also be found living on the savannas where they can find plenty of leaves and grass to eat. They are found in Murchison National Park as well as Kidepo National Park in Uganda.

Uganda’s remarkable avian diversity (more than 1,000 species within an area similar in size to Great Britain) can be attributed to its location between the East African savannah, West African rainforests and the semi-desert of the north.

The country has only two endemic species that only occur in the country, but if you only take East Africa into consideration, there are 150 species to be found only in Uganda. Migrant birds are present from November to April.

Notable birds include the shoebill, Albertine Rift endemic, Guinea-Congo regional species and the crowned hornbill.

Self drive safari

For self-drive African safaris, visitors can hire their own 4×4, whilst accommodation can be secured in park campsites or in the vehicle itself if a campervan option is selected.

Part of the fun of a self drive safari is spotting the abundant wildlife on your own and taking the time to spend viewing your favourite animals.

A normal 2 wheel drive car may be sufficient, and of course cheaper, for some parks however other parks have deeper sand and a 4*4 will be required.

Best time to go to Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda is during its two dry seasons: between December and February, and between June and August, when conditions are particularly good for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

Game spotting in national parks is also good at this time, as well as between February and March.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know when to travel to Uganda, visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

Uganda safari cost

Uganda is marketed as an ecotourism destination unlike other African countries which have broader tourist markets. This results in lower tourist numbers and prices can be higher due to tourist restrictions on group trek sizes and the cost of permits required for gorilla trekking.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Uganda including accommodation selected, duration such as week long or 9 day tours , safari costs, tours, flights, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travelers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and activities as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your safari in Uganda including:

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget. This option requires time and know-how to plan for all flights, transport, meals, accommodation and safari tours.

Without the knowledge of specific safari destinations and logistics in navigating an African country, this may be a challenging option for many travelers.

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Uganda where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Tailor-made tours
  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

Tourists can visit for up to 3 months with a visa and passports must have at least six months of validity remaining beyond their exit date when deciding the best time to visit Uganda.

Visas are required for citizens of the United States travelling to Uganda. You can apply for a visa at the Ugandan High Commission or apply online for an ‘e-visa’ .

All British passport holders need a tourist visa to enter Uganda. You can apply for a visa at the Ugandan High Commission in London or apply online through this ‘ e-visa external link ’.

EU & Switzerland

EU & Swiss passport holders will need a tourist visa to enter Uganda. You can apply for a visa at the Ugandan High Commission in London or apply online for an ‘e-visa’ .

The CDC and WHO recommend the following Uganda vaccines : Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Yellow fever may be required if traveling from a yellow fever endemic country.

The CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Uganda take prescription medicine to prevent malaria.

Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

Malaria is a risk in Uganda. Consider taking anti-malarial medication if you’re travelling to this area. Other insect-borne diseases include leishmaniasis. Ensure your accommodation is insect-proof.

Malaria is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and so the first line of defence is to protect yourself against mosquito bites. Malaria Prophylaxis may be prescribed to you during your consultation depending on your itinerary.

Check with a travel medicine specialist to see if antimalarials should be considered to help prevent malaria contraction.

For travelers who have been completely immunized against COVID-19, a negative PCR test certificate is no longer necessary to enter or leave the country.

Regardless of whether they have had vaccinations or not, parents of children less than 6 years old do not have to provide proof that their child has a negative COVID-19 PCR test certificate.

What to pack

The essential items to pack for your Uganda safari include:

  • Neutral coloured clothes
  • Long-sleeved shirts protecting against the sun and mosquitoes
  • Plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and insect repellent to cover longer trips
  • Jackets and sweaters for early morning game drives
  • Comfortable walking shoes

The currency of Uganda is the Uganda Shilling (UGX).

USD $1/GBP £0.80 =  Approximately Ugandan Shillings.

Driving in Uganda

Ugandans drive on the left-hand side of the road and visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

There has been a rise in the number of automatic transmission vehicles in the country which are slowly overtaking manual transmission vehicles.

Visitors should consider travel insurance when planning their trip to help protect and cover the costs of hospitalization or repatriation if required.

Some credit cards may already include travel insurance. Online travel insurance comparators are also useful in finding suitable offers.

9 Secret Places to Discover in Uganda

Common questions about uganda safaris and tours.

The people of Uganda are among the most hospitable in Africa but it’s the cultural diversity that will surely mesmerize you! With over 56 tribal communities, each with a distinct: cultural heritage, history, language, food, dance, dressing, beliefs, customs, folklore, etc., you will just be blown away. A visit to the Elgon area will unveil to you the Imbalu circumcision ceremony among the Bagisu who live at the foot of Elgon Mountain. To the west, the Banyankole perform their Kitagururo dance, the Banyoro have their Runyege and to the North, the Acholi have the Larakaraka traditional dance.

You don’t want to miss the local and unique cuisines here! For example, there is luwombo – a traditional dish by the Baganda, the eshabwe – a Banyankole sauce prepared without fire, atapa – millet bread popular with the Iteso, and malakwang – a sour vegetable prepared by the Acholi and Langi. The other fascinating aspects of the people and culture in Uganda are the traditional dress and ceremonies. “Witnessing a traditional marriage ceremony, with great music and colorful dresses, makes cultural safari tours in Uganda an incredibly unique experience”, recounted a traveler to Uganda.

The country of Uganda still features monarchical kingdoms such as the Buganda Kingdom, which is one of the most organized kingdoms out of all those still in existence in Africa. Buganda’s heritage includes the Kasubi royal tombs which have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site – and a popular spot to explore while on a Kampala City excursion. Other notable kingdoms in the country include Tooro, Bunyoro, and Busoga.

In Uganda, there are indigenous tribal groups like the Batwa Pygmies. For generations, the Mgahinga dense forest was home to the Batwa (hunter-gatherers and fierce warriors) who depended on the forest for shelter, food and medicine. Now, they lead visitors through the forests and introduce them to their old home and the techniques they used to survive in it. Meeting these indigenous people will offer you a glimpse into the history and memories of ancient Africa.

From the gigantic, striking long-horned Ankole cattle in western Uganda and the extensive coffee plantations at the foothills of the Elgon Mountain, to the Bachwezi earthworks in Ntusi and the Karamojong nomadic lifestyle in the far North-east of the country, Uganda’s diverse heritage and culture is undoubtedly vast and incomparable !

The months of December to February and from June to September are considered the best time to visit Uganda, but some intermittent rain is possible due to unpredictable seasonal changes. All the same, one can still visit Uganda even in the months considered “low season” and the encounter, experience is still outstanding. The “low season” months do have fewer travellers, which means the parks are not crowded.

Uganda has the best weather and climate in the world if you like. Located right on the Equator but with a snow-capped (throughout the year) Rwenzori Mountain, you may refer to it as being warm/hot and cold but not humid. The country is sunny for a larger part of the year, with daytime temperatures generally hovering between 24 and 28°C. However, temperatures can drop considerably at night (to about 16 to 18°C), enough for one to bring a sweatshirt, or fleece.

The areas at high altitudes such as the Bwindi and nearby Mgahinga get much colder as temperatures tend to drop to about 6°C. The parks further north, such as Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley are usually warmer with daytime temperatures (sometimes) at about 32°C. Rain (wet season) is generally expected twice a year, in October/November (short rains) and late March to the end of May. Dry season sets in from December to February or mid-March and June to September.

Uganda is well-endowed and the list of major attractions/destinations can remarkably be long. Think of being greeted by the sight of the largest freshwater lake (Victoria) in Africa as your plane approaches the runway at the Entebbe International Airport. How about being at the source of the Nile river where it begins its longest journey through Egypt into the Mediterranean Sea? Proceed East to the foothill of Elgon Mountain (that natives call Mount Masaba due to some legend attached to its formation). There is the Sipi Falls to marvel at. Continue into the pristine Pian Upe Game Reserve, the second largest gazetted area in Uganda, before finally heading into Kidepo Valley National Park where you will get the true meaning of being in the African wilderness. Notwithstanding the abundance of wildlife, the encounter with the Karamojong or IK tribe in this place will leave you wanting to stay even longer.

From Kidepo, you don’t want to miss the Mighty Murchison Falls National Park . Murchison Falls is a place like nowhere else. Hike or drive to the top of the falls and you will surely struggle to find the right adjective to describe the feeling. The experience is (……). Hopefully, you will fill the gap after being in the Murchison Falls personally. What about an encounter with the human closest relation with the wild, the chimpanzees? Proceed to Kibale Forest National Park and your wishes shall be delivered. The experience is so fascinating and unforgettable. On the other hand, the scenery here is beyond description. We are talking about the rainforest on one side and on another side you are gazing at some spectacular crater lakes that you can ever imagine. Walk/hike to the “top of the world” and you will surely be left speechless.

From Kibale, what better place than heading to the Queen Elizabeth National Park , right at the foot of the fabled “Mountain of the Moons”, the Rwenzori Mountain . If you wish, you can have a few days trekking the Rwenzori Mountain. The experience is unforgettable! Encounter the Bakonjo who live at the foot of this magnificent mountain. Down in Queen, you can be sure of encountering some members of the big 5 e.g. lions, the elusive leopard. There is also the boat safari along the Kazinga Channel that connects Lake Edward and Lake George. Drive to the Ishasha sector of Queen and there is the possibility (70%) of encountering the tree-climbing lions. The sight of these lions up in the tree is breathtaking.

Yes, you may be wondering about the whereabouts of the gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and the nearby Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are the answer to your wish. The gorilla encounter sometimes evokes sweet emotions that can best be expressed with “tears of joy”. You got to be here. You don’t want to miss out on the Batwa pygmy people who live close to this “Impenetrable Forest” that they once called home. From Bwindi, proceed to Lake Bunyonyi . The lake is framed by lush, green-terraced hills that reach a height of (2,200 – 2,478m) but it’s the 29 islands of various shapes and sizes scattered across the water that make it most magical, and you could admire them all day.

Drive to Lake Mburo National Park and you can enjoy so much more including walking safari, and horseback safari among others. Mburo is regarded as the safest for park (bush) walk compared to the rest. From Mburo to Entebbe, do not forget to make a stop at the Equator Crossing where you will have the opportunity to be at both the South and North hemispheres at the same time. As earlier mentioned, the list can go on and on, but the above are attractions that you should only miss if you must.

While on a safari tour in Uganda, you may (depending on interest) undertake any of the following activities: game drives, community and cultural encounters, gorilla and chimp trekking, boat or launch cruises, birdwatching, white water rafting on the Nile, coffee tour, mountain trekking, beach relaxation, abseiling for non-faint-hearted, hot-air balloon safari.

We would recommend you spend at least 6 days on a safari tour in Uganda .

One can take a 3-day trip, but from experience, it leaves one wishing he/she had more days to explore more.

From experience, most people incur no health problems while visiting Uganda but rather enjoy themselves during the time on Safari. Nevertheless, you may consider the following in your packing:

  • Anti-malaria medicines, pain reliever, insect repellent. A simple first aid kit won’t be bad at all.
  • Pack your necessary sunscreen, hand sanitizers, sun hat plus glasses, and body creams/lotions of your choice among others.
  • Not all accommodations may provide shampoo. Feel free to carry some if necessary.

IMPORTANT: Ask your medical insurance provider if your policy applies overseas for any emergencies. Needless to mention, ensure you have a good level of physical fitness.

Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination is required. When applying for the visa , you will be required to upload proof in addition to other requirements such as a copy of the passport bio-data page, most recent passport photograph, and travel itinerary (in place of an invitation letter).

The Uganda Shilling (UGX) is the local currency in Uganda,  and it is available in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000. The exchange rate fluctuates between: USD 1 = UGX 3,650 – 3,850.

IMPORTANT: USD Dollar bills smaller in denominations than USD 50, 100 may attract a less favorable exchange rate, and also USD series older than 2009 are not accepted.

It is possible to withdraw some money from the ATM at the airport or in major towns along your safari route. If you plan to use an ATM card or credit card, it would be good to notify your Bank that you will be using your Credit Card or Debit Card for cash withdrawals from an ATM in your safari destination e.g. Uganda. In case you wish to have some local currency, the assigned tour driver-guide can always lead you to the nearby forex point.

The main entry point into Uganda is through the Entebbe International Airport. You have to present your identification documents like a passport and, depending on the country of origin, a stamped visa. The visa must be obtained prior to the arrival.

IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to ensure that your passport is valid for a minimum of 6 months and has several clear pages for visas prior to the departure to Uganda – the Pearl of Africa.

Reassuring and responsive
It's a little unnerving to make plans with a company half way around the world. But John was very responsive to my questions and dealt quickly with any problems. He was courteous and helpful. It was a seamless process to plan our trip and I would recommend him and Safari.com.
This luxury service experience was… first-Class Service with a Smooth Landing
This luxury service experience was fantastic, especially for a first-timer like me. My consultant went above and beyond to find exactly what I was looking for. They were incredibly professional and made the whole process very smooth. There was a bit of a wait for confirmation, which is something I'm used to getting instantly when booking myself. However, this is a minor detail compared to the incredible service and personalized tour I received. The wait was completely worth it in the end! Thanks to this company, I had a truly exceptional experience. As a first-time user of this kind of service, I couldn't have asked for a better provider. Highly recommended!

Discover Uganda on the safari of a lifetime and learn the true character of a country that has been described as the “Pearl of Africa”. Your holiday to Uganda will be filled with fantastic sights, from forested reserves and snow-capped mountains to winding rivers and lakes. Ten national parks cover large areas of Uganda, with Murchison Falls National Park the largest. Here the waters of the Nile River flow through a narrow gorge before plunging down in spectacular fashion, creating the Murchison Falls, as well as the habitat of Uganda’s largest population of Nile crocodiles.

It is however a visit to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that will ensure you have the safari of a lifetime to Uganda. Situated along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bwindi is home to almost half of all mountain gorillas in the world. Getting up close and personal with these impressive great apes will make your Uganda wildlife safari unforgettable. A vacation to Uganda should also include a visit to the Queen Elizabeth National Park in the west of the country. The park is one of Uganda’s most popular destinations for an authentic safari, with sightings of the famous tree-climbing lions a highlight in any itinerary.

Highlights of a Safari to Uganda

With a variety of natural wonders, iconic species and endless landscapes, an Uganda safari offers endless opportunities for the most magical of experiences. From exhilarating gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, to the wildlife paradises of Queen Elizabeth and Kibale National Parks, an Uganda holiday is inviting discovery.

Experience an unrivalled Uganda wildlife safari in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . It is mostly known for its habituated mountain gorilla groups that holds half of the world’s population of this highly endangered species. The rest of the park is also a wildlife wonderland, with 120 mammal, almost 350 bird, 220 butterfly and more than a thousand plant species.

A safari in the Queen Elizabeth National Park should form part of the itinerary on your Uganda vacation. Nearly 400 kilometers southwest of the capital city of Kampala, this Uganda park is perhaps most famous for its tree-climbing lions, with the black-maned males the star attractions. You can also expect to see abundant wildlife when discovering this Uganda wilderness, including elephants, buffalo, chimpanzee and Ugandan kob.

Less than 300 kilometers to the north and forming a continuous forest with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park is another must-visit destination on your Uganda wildlife safari. The park has one of the highest concentrations of primates in Africa, including chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys and the rare L’Hoest’s monkeys .

JENMAN African Safaris have popular safari packages that allow you to experience the very best of Uganda and the rest of Africa.

Currency The local currency is the Uganda Shilling (UGX). Notes are in denominations of UGX50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000 and 1,000.  Try not to accept very old or damaged notes where possible, as some places may refuse to take them. USD dollar, Euro and Pound Sterling are all recognised currencies in Uganda, and both euros and dollars are now widely accepted for cash payments. Other international currencies may also be accepted in some places in the major cities. The import and export of local currency is prohibited. Import of foreign currency is unlimited if declared upon arrival. Export of foreign currency must not exceed the amount declared upon arrival. Foreign currency may be exchanged at the Central Bank, commercial banks and foreign exchange bureaux. Be aware that dollar notes from before 2006 will not be accepted for exchange in smaller towns.

Banking Banking hours: Generally Mon-Fri 0830-1700, Sat 0900-1400. Forex bureaux are open until 1700 and able to do electronic transfers to and from overseas. American Express, Diners, MasterCard and Visa credit cards are sometimes accepted but not widely used. Some large hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and shops in urban areas accept credit cards. ATMs are available in the larger cities but ATM services in smaller towns and rural areas are limited. It is advisable to check with your bank to see if your card is compatible with Ugandan ATMs. Traveller’s cheques are not widely accepted outside Kampala. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller’s cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling. It is advised that travellers bring sufficient US dollars in cash in case of emergencies. Higher denomination bills usually give a better exchange rate than smaller notes.

Fly Uganda (www.flyuganda.com), Eagle Air (www.flyeagleairuganda.com) and Aerolink (www.aerolinkuganda.com) offer scheduled and charter internal flights. Domestic bus travel is cheap, but departures aren’t always on schedule. There are two classes of bus travel – matatu (minibus) or kigati (van) which travel fixed routes, and larger coaches or buses. Self-drive and hiring a private car with a driver are other options. International hire companies are based near Entebbe International Airport and in the centre of Kampala. A four-wheel drive is recommended for rural areas. The speed limit is 80kph (50mph) or 100kph (62mph) on highways. Most car hire companies include breakdown cover. The Automobile Association of Uganda (www.aau.co.ug) can provide information and assistance. An International Driving Permit and adequate third-party insurance is required. UK driving licences are accepted. Drivers must carry their vehicle log books and must pay for a temporary road licence. Whist some major roads are paved, the majority of minor and side roads are unpaved and can be bumpy and pot-holed, so drive with caution, especially in the rainy season. The roads are of variable quality and radiate from Kampala, although the network is sparse in the north. Note that there are still some army and police checkpoints on roads. Always keep vehicle doors locked and valuables out of sight. Private taxis are identifiable by their black and white stripes. Boda-bodas (motorbike taxis) are often a cheaper option and, whilst fun, are not for the faint-hearted. Don’t be afraid to ask your driver to slow down if necessary as accidents are common. Cycling in Uganda requires nerves of steel; many roads are dusty or under construction and motor vehicles rarely allow cyclists room. Always wear a helmet and use rear-view mirrors. Avoid cycling at night. Uganda’s coach and bus services connect all major towns. The Post Office’s Post Bus Service (www.ugapost.co.ug) offers relatively comfortable buses and is more safety-aware than some other bus companies. Most major routes are also covered by smaller white mini-buses. These are faster than coaches, but drivers wait until they are full before leaving and departure times are not fixed.

It is advised to drink bottled water throughout your trip. Powdered or tinned milk is available and is advised. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit should be peeled. Ugandan cuisine draws on English, Arab and Asian – especially Indian – influences and uses home-grown local produce including plantains, sweet potatoes, corn, beans and cassava. It’s easy to eat cheaply almost anywhere in the country. International restaurants can be found in larger towns, with Indian, Chinese and Italian being the most popular. Traditional foods include ugali (solidified maize meal porridge) served with a stew of groundnuts (peanuts), beans, chicken or meat such as beef, goat or mutton. Game can be found on menus in some restaurants and at safari lodges. Fish including the tiger fish, mukini, mputa and tilapia are popular. Vegetarians may struggle outside of major towns, but Uganda’s Indian and Chinese restaurants generally offer a selection of vegetarian dishes. Traditional desserts include mandazi, a doughnut often served with cinnamon or sugar. According to our Uganda travel advice in 2022, tipping is not standard practice. It is normal to tip 5 to 10% at tourist-orientated restaurants and to tip taxi drivers.

Uganda has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 21-25°C (70- 77°F), apart from in the mountainous areas, which are much cooler. The top of Mount Elgon is often covered with snow. The hottest months are December to February. Evenings can feel chilly after the heat of the day with temperatures around 12- 16ºC (54-61°F). Most regions of Uganda, apart from the dry area in the north, have an annual rainfall of between 1,000mm and 2,000mm. There is heavy rain between March and May and between October and November, when road travel can become difficult in parts of the country. The best time for trekking is during the dry seasons, between January and February and June to September. Wildlife viewing is best at the end of the dry seasons, when game is more concentrated around water sources.

Lightweight clothes with a warm cover-up for the evenings are advised. Take a pair of good walking shoes or boots for forest trekking, and long-sleeved tops to protect against mosquitoes. If you’re planning to go to mountainous areas, be sure to take warm clothing, as temperatures drop substantially. White clothes won’t stay white for long with Uganda’s red dust roads, so go for darker colours. Travellers can also pick up bargains at second-hand clothes markets in Kampala, Jinja and Fort Portal, which sell trousers, boots and fleeces.

There are internet cafés in most large towns. Access in smaller towns and rural areas is limited.

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Uganda are the “Type G ” British BS-1363 type. If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Electrical sockets (outlets) in Uganda usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you’re plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need. But travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. North American sockets supply electricity at between 110 and 120 volts, far lower than in most of the rest of the world. Consequently, North American appliances are generally built for 110-120 volts.

Wildlife viewing in Uganda is at its peak between December and February, and then again between June and August. This is undoubtedly the best time for your Uganda safari, especially if you intend to go gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Birdlife is fantastic all year round but reaches its peak when the migrant species are present, between November and April.

Dry season in Uganda

When planning an Uganda safari, travellers should note that there are two distinct dry seasons. They stretch between December and February, and then again between June and August. This is the best time to discover Uganda’s wildlife as animals are in search of available water while the vegetation is also less thick. Excellent gorilla trekking and rafting in Uganda are experienced by safari-goers in the dry season. Average daytime temperatures at this time of the year in Uganda are also mild and pleasant.

Wet season in Uganda

Uganda is positioned on the equator and when considering an Uganda safari, you should keep in mind that the country has a tropical climate with two main rain seasons. These occur between September and November and from March to May. While the landscape is lush and green, the birdlife is prolific and there are countless new arrivals in the animal kingdom.

While gorilla trekking in Uganda’s dense jungle may be high on everyone’s bucket list, it’s not for the faint of heart. However, a face-to-face encounter with a mountain gorilla is an experience of a lifetime.

Our Luxury Uganda safaris range from budget-friendly to luxurious, and if you don’t see what you’re looking for, one of our East Africa Safari Experts would be happy to customize a trip for you .

Best time for Safari in Uganda

The best time for safari in Uganda is during the dry season , which runs from December to February and June to September. During this time, the weather is dry and sunny, and the wildlife is more visible as they gather around water sources. The dry season also offers the best conditions for gorilla trekking in Uganda , as the trails are drier and easier to navigate. December to February and June to July are ideal for birdwatching , as migratory birds flock to Uganda's national parks. The wet season, which runs from March to May and October to November, may offer fewer crowds and lower prices, but the roads can be challenging to navigate in some areas. However, it is important to note that Uganda's national parks are open year-round, and each season offers a unique experience. Take a look at the month-by-month analysis in the boxes below.

Read the detailed article >>>

January - February

High season.

January through February is a relatively hot season with clear skies, minimal rains, and more sunshine. It is an excellent time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking and walking with chimpanzees in lush forests.

The country's north can be pretty hot and dusty during this period.

March - May

March marks the beginning of the rainy season, a perfect time to spot the birth of many animals. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting many colorful winged creatures during this time.

April is the wettest month on Ugandasafaris, parks are quieter, and many roads can be impassable. On the other hand, it's low season, perfect timing for discounted hotel and lodge rates.

May ends the first rainy season of the year with lesser downpours and incredible greenery in the countryside.

June - August

Peak season.

June is the start of the peak season because of its gorgeous dry weather, extending into August. It's the best time for a Uganda safari, attracting the biggest number of tourists to the country. Gorilla trekking permits and premium safari lodges can get booked out during this time; book well in advance to avoid unnecessary bother.

July is also excellent for gorilla trekking excursions and wildlife safaris in Uganda. Wild animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot.

August is fantastic for game-viewing safaris, and boat safaris and parks don't feel crowded.

September - December

September is usually the end of the dry season, but depending on when the rains arrive, you may experience some downpours on your Uganda safari. September is not ideal for gorilla trekking excursions. However, those who can brave the downpours will undoubtedly save on travel costs.

October is not a busy month for a safari in Uganda. Prices are reasonable, and this is a good time of year for specials on gorilla trekking permits. Most game parks are still accessible at this time, but the rainfall can be a little unpredictable.

The rains continue into November , turning the countryside plains into a vibrant green perfect for wildlife and landscape photography. The November rains hold back many travelers, so the low season extends into December.

December ends the wet season with relatively short rains paving the way for the peak season. It's the best time to travel north to Kidepo and Murchison for excellent game-viewing safaris. It is also a good time for bird-watching, with a wide variety of migratory birds making their way into the area.

Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable is an ancient rainforest spread over steep ridges and valleys that form a protective habitat for almost half of the last mountain gorillas. It features on most Uganda tours and offers the best treks to see silverback gorillas and immerse in local cultures.

Kibale National Park, Uganda travel guide

Kibale National Park

Kibale Forest and the nearby crater lakes are nature hikers' dream places to visit in Uganda. The rainforest park has the densest population of primates, with 15 primate species jumping the forest canopy. It is in Kibale that you will visit wild chimpanzees up close.

Queen Elizabeth National Park travel guide

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth is the best park in Uganda for family safari holidays and big game viewing tours. Game drives will bring you close to the elephants, tree-climbing lions, and leopards, but just as well, boat safaris on the Kazinga channel have excellent encounters with thirsty animals.

If you have time, extend your uganda safari to these places:

Lake Mburo National Park horse back riding safari

Lake Mburo National is the smallest and closest wildlife park to the city, 230 kilometers outside Kampala. This small park is usually included on Ugandasafaris as a buffer between Kampala and Bwindi and offers decent wildlife sightings.

Murchison National Park travel guide

Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls National Park is located in the northwestern region, a bit far from the famous western safari circuit, but worth a first-time visit. Here, you'll marvel at the mighty waterfall, cruise the Nile, and take a game drive to get close.

Queen Elizabeth National Park travel guide

Kampala is a place you must visit while on holiday in Uganda. The vibrant capital offers a diverse range of cultural experiences, including bustling markets, museums, restaurants, nightclubs, and traditional music and dance performances.

Selecting the best safari experience in Uganda.

If you're planning a safari holiday package in Uganda, you have the option to choose from guided group tours or private tours to get a unique experience that combines wildlife, culture, and adventure. You can go on game drives in national parks such as Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo Valley , where you can spot elephants, lions, giraffes, and many other animals. Unique to Uganda is chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest and Budongo Forest, which gives you the opportunity to observe these primates in their natural habitat. The highlight of Uganda safaris is the epic gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to see endangered mountain gorillas up close. But you must not miss a boat safari along the Nile River or the Kazinga Channel that gives you a front-row seat to wildlife viewing.  Cultural encounters in remote villages are worth extending your holiday trip to learn about the traditional way of life.

Trekking mountain gorillas

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Trek through the misty impenetrable jungle to encounter gorillas, the world's largest living primates, on their own turf. The silverback's sheer size and beguiling humanlike interactions will leave you spellbound.

What is the cost of safari in Uganda?

It costs between $350 and $1500 per person per day to go on safari in Uganda, including transport, meals, and guide fees, but not permits. Take a look at the summary cost table below:

Most Uganda safari packages offer an all-inclusive (full-board) per-person rate, including taxes, and assuming double occupancy. A few lodges operate on a half-board rate, and rare ones offer bed & breakfast except city hotels.

To plan a perfect itinerary and budget for your Uganda safari holiday, follow these simple recommendations: -

  • Your itinerary should include a night in the city, a day for traveling to the national park, trekking with gorillas, and visiting other national parks for wildlife viewing and chimp rainforests.
  • Remember that traveling between destinations can take an entire day and should be included in your budget.
  • Your budget should cover flights, accommodation, food, and activities. To maximize your budget, consider traveling during the low season when there are fewer tourists and prices are lower.
  • You can also save money by booking a Uganda tour package through a licensed local tour operator, which can provide a more authentic experience and is often more affordable. These operators are now verified by trade associations to protect visitors.

Essential Information

Uganda is a great safari holiday destination with few tourist crowds compared to its neighbors. Group tours are small, and popular wildlife sites are still relatively unconstrained. The country's forested and game reserves are accessible to independent travelers, and off-the-beaten-track gems like the Ssese Islands, Katonga Wildlife Reserve, Sipi Falls, and Kasenda Crater Lakes are relatively affordable. Uganda has a healthy reputation for safety , with low levels of crime against tourists. Independent travelers face minimal day-to-day hassle, and the locals are warm, friendly, and relaxed hosts. Here's some essential holiday travel information to help you understand navigating Uganda.

Phone & Internet Connection

Many phone networks cover Entebbe , Kampala, large towns, and tourist areas, but signals may be inconsistent. Local SIM cards are affordable, and international calling bundles make it easy to call home. It's best to unlock your mobile phone before arriving, which can be done in Kampala but may delay your Uganda wildlife safari . Wi-Fi of varying quality is available for free in nearly all countryside lodges.

Health & Vaccines

When traveling to Uganda, it is important to have proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival at the airport. The Ministry of Health recommends Hepatitis A and B vaccinations, and those traveling to rural areas should also consider the typhoid vaccine. Malaria is a risk in Uganda , so consult with your doctor on antimalarial options. At the very least, sleep under a mosquito net at night and wear insect repellent during the day. It is also recommended to drink bottled or filtered water.

Uganda is generally a safe place for tourists, but it's recommended not to wander alone at night, especially in urban areas. Ugandans are welcoming people but hold traditional beliefs, so public displays of affection are generally frowned upon. LGBTQ+ travelers can travel through the country without issues, as Ugandans don't discriminate based on race and sexuality.

When traveling around Uganda, use shillings to pay for items at local shops and restaurants. Larger hotels and tour companies may accept U.S. dollars and credit cards. You can withdraw local currency at ATMs or exchange dollars, euros, and pounds at the airport, forex branches, or local banks. Bills printed before 2006 may not be accepted.

A three-month tourist visa costs US$50 and can only be obtained online at visas.immigration.go.ug . Applicants must submit a completed form, two passport-sized photos and at least three days before travel. You can not get on arrival at Entebbe International Airport. Passports must be valid for six months from the intended travel date and have at least one blank page.

Best Time To Go

Uganda, located on the equator with an average altitude of around 1,000m, is a year-round destination for wildlife safaris. March-May and Oct-Nov have the highest rainfall, but gorillas can still be found, although trekking can be slippery and slower. Accommodations and gorilla permits can be cheaper at this time. The best time to visit Uganda and go on safari is June-Sep, which is the peak season, but Uganda remains unaffected by mass tourism, and you won’t have to worry about crowds.

About Uganda Travel

About Uganda

Uganda is situated in the African Great Lakes region, bordered by Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda.

Although it’s a landlocked country, it’s often considered the “Pearl of Africa” due to its rich diversity.

The official languages spoken in the country are English and Kiswahili.

Kampala serves as the largest city and the capital of Uganda, with a high percentage of the population identifying as Christians.

Uganda is unique as the only African country where you can find the Bahai temple.

Uganda gained its independence from the British on the 9th of October 1962.

The name “Uganda” is derived from the Buganda Kingdom, which occupies the central and southern parts of the country.

In 1979, Robert William Felkin, a medical missionary, observed a successful caesarean section performed by indigenous healers in the Kitara empire.

This happened long before missionary doctors visited Africa. The Arabs arrived in Uganda for trade around the 1830s.

The People & Culture of Uganda

The People & Culture of Uganda

Uganda is gifted with diverse ethnic groups that have different senses of fashion, speak different languages, hold different cultural beliefs and values, specialize in different cuisines, and much more.

Most of these groups can be visited while on safari to various tourist destinations in Uganda.

Entebbe & Kampala City – The Gateways for Safaris in Uganda

Entebbe & Kampala City - The Gateways for Safaris in Uganda

Kampala is the capital city of Uganda, situated in the central part of the country.

The city was previously a hunting area for the former Kabaka of Buganda kingdom, primarily due to its scenic rolling hills, seven in number, valleys, and wetlands that were once home to Impalas (antelopes).

Kampala assumed the role of the capital city of Uganda in 1962 when the country gained independence from British rule.

The name “Kampala” is derived from a local word, “Ka’ Impala,” signifying the presence of Impalas that were once abundant in the region.

Entebbe City is where Entebbe International Airport is located.

Why go on a Uganda safari?

National Parks in Uganda

Your primary reason for visiting might be gorilla trekking safaris , but try to diversify your Uganda safari.

Uganda safaris offer one of the best wildlife viewing experiences, in addition to being the best place for gorilla safaris in Africa and the world.

Uganda is one of the few countries that are home to the big five game animals, cheetahs, and ostriches.

The country’s wilderness is incredibly rich, with approximately 345 mammal species.

Include sightings of other primates like Golden Monkeys, Chimpanzees, and more in your Uganda safari plans.

Uganda has the largest population of primates in the East African region, accounting for over half of the existing mountain gorillas, followed by Rwanda and Congo.

You can find more information about this in our travel information section.

Although Uganda is one of the friendliest and safest countries you can visit, there are some safety measures everyone must take while visiting any country in the world.

The other safety measures are everyday precautions that you should also observe in your country: keep car doors locked, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, avoid traveling at night, and most importantly, make sure you’re using a reputable tour operator.

When to visit Uganda for Travel holidays

When to visit Uganda

The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry months of the year.

December to February are the hottest months, while June to September are equally good but the most competitive.

Scheduling your Uganda tours during the dry season gives you the chance to spot large numbers of wildlife and primates.

During these months, animals roam freely around national parks and visit riverbanks for water more often.

Roads are also dry and transportation becomes easier.

This isn’t the case during the rainy months, when roads are muddy, and vehicles often get stuck, especially non-4×4 safari vehicles.

Animals also tend to seek shelter from the rain and become less visible in the parks.

While we recommend conducting your Uganda safaris during the dry months, you can also consider visiting during the unpredictable months.

These months often come with discounts on various services and facilities.

The dry months are perfect for luxury gorilla trekking , while the wet months are ideal for budget safaris .

Explore Uganda – The Pearl of Africa

The best places to see wildlife in Uganda are Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park . You may go chimpanzee trekking , take a river boat, and maybe even spot the infamous tree-climbing lions. Though guided chimpanzee expeditions at Kibale Forest National Park make exotic rainforest life more accessible and illuminating. Also, the rainforests of Uganda are home to many fascinating things. Two of the greatest places to go on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trip are Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park , which together safeguard almost half of the mountain gorilla population on Earth.

Uganda safaris tour frequently asked questions.

Here are some common questions about going on Uganda safaris and tour holidays.

What is the best time to go on Uganda safaris tour?

Uganda enjoys warm and sunny days every day of the year, and the country can realistically be visited all year round. The best time for Uganda safaris tour holidays is a combination of several factors such as your schedule, the activities you are interested in, and the places you will visit.

Generally, the dry season months are regarded as the most ideal time for visiting Uganda . It makes viewing wildlife much easier and there are fewer interruptions from the rain, especially for hiking and cultural experiences.

Here is our full article about the best time to visit Uganda – with guides for specific areas and a climate data chart.

What are the major attractions/activities for a Uganda safari?

Some of the most popular things to enjoy in Uganda safaris include whiter water rafting in the Nile, wildlife game drives in the savannah parks, chimpanzee tracking , hiking, and gorilla tracking .

Uganda is home to the snow-capped Rwenzori mountains , the source of the river Nile, hundreds of waterfalls and hot springs, savannah parks, rainforests, lakes, and much more. This means that while some places are more popular, there is a good variety to fully personalize your experience.

Take a look at some of our Uganda safaris and tour packages to get a better idea of how we combine everything for your safari.

How much does a typical Uganda safaris tour cost?

It is hard to say the exact cost of a Uganda safaris tour because there are many variables to consider. Realistically, a Ugandan safari can cost between 100 USD and 1500 USD per day depending on the choice of activities, accommodation, and transportation.

For our packages, we have indicated the prices for each safari and all the necessary details. We sometimes have discounts for a limited time, and most trips become cheaper if the group is bigger and some costs are shared with more people.

Is Uganda safe for foreigners to visit?

The quick answer is YES, Uganda is safe for everyone to visit, stay and work.

The old days when some parts of Uganda were unstable are long gone and Ugandans and visitors can travel throughout all parts of the country freely, at any time. Beyond national stability, Ugandans are very warm and welcoming people who will make you feel at home.

What accommodation should I expect for my Uganda safaris holiday?

Uganda’s tourism industry is well-developed and visitors have a wide array of accommodation options ranging from simple and basic campsites to luxurious hotels and lodges.

For our Uganda safaris and tour packages, we use the lodges and hotels where we have stayed and tested their facilities and service so that we know what to expect them to deliver for you – our guest. Most of our trips are based on mid-range accommodations but this can be personalized to suit the needs of your own holiday.

Can my Ugandan safari be customized for me?

Yes. All our safaris can be customized to fit your specific needs. Whether it is the price, schedule, accommodation, activities, or anything else we can make the necessary changes to adapt your safari to you.

It is true that no African safari is the same, and we make sure that the Ugandan safari you go on will reflect what you want at every turn.

What kind of vehicle will I use for my Uganda Safaris holiday?

While the choice of your safari vehicle in Uganda depends on the size of the group, we use our safari land cruisers for our safaris. We also use our customized safari mini-buses for some safari tours – depending on different factors.

Whether it is with a safari Landcruiser or a mini-bus, all our vehicles are 4-wheel drive and capable to handle the wild. We also keep well-maintained and service vehicles for your safety and comfort.

Is my Ugandan safari inclusive of my international flight ticket?

Since we serve guests from all parts of the world, our safari packages are priced without including international flights. As you finalize the details and schedule of your Uganda safaris tour, we often advise on how to deal with flights depending on where you are coming from.

What animals will I see on my Uganda safaris holiday?

Uganda is one of the richest countries in Africa when it comes to the diversity of wildlife. With savannahs, swamps, forests, and mountains, there is so much to see.

The main animals to see in Uganda include mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimps, elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, crocodiles, and much more. Additionally, Uganda has more than 1000 different bird species.

Depending on where your Uganda safaris tour holiday is taking you, all the above and more are possible for you.

Do I need to be physically fit to go on safaris in Uganda?

Generally, your Uganda safaris tour doesn’t require physical fitness beyond the normal fitness of most people. In a more specific sense, the level of fitness will depend on what activities you want to do on your safari holiday.

Gorilla tracking does require some enhanced physical activity but a porter can help and for those who can move much on their own, there are options for getting carried.

The most physically challenging activities in Uganda are mountain climbing, especially Rwenzori which is Africa’s toughest.

For most safari tours, there is no special requirement for physical fitness. However, given that every person is different, talk to our team about this and get advice that is specific to you.

Uganda is a great destination to view wildlife in both forest and savannah. Not to be missed is gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, while chimps can easily be spotted in Kibale National Park and several other locations. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks offer wonderful savannah safaris with good wildlife viewing, as does the more remote Kidepo Valley National Park.

Uganda

Pros & Cons

  • One of the very few places to see endangered mountain gorillas
  • Combine primate viewing with a classic savannah safari
  • Good balance between vehicle, boat and walking activities
  • Excellent birding
  • Scenic beauty
  • Big Five not as easily seen as in some other safari countries
  • Relatively long driving times between parks on bad roads

Uganda Safari Reviews

  • Expert Rating 4.1 /5 – 12 Reviews
  • User Rating 4.8 /5 – 367 Reviews

Elephant, hippo, buffalo and zebra are plentiful in Uganda. Lion, giraffe and white rhino are more localized but easily seen in the right location. Leopard are less certain. The birding is a real highlight with more than 1,000 species recorded. So is the tracking of primates, in particular gorilla and chimp, but there are many other species worth watching. The antelope known as the Uganda kob is found in most savannah reserves and is a favorite prey of lion.

  • More about the wildlife

Uganda’s tropical climate is a little different in the north and south of the country. From March to November, the north experiences a rainy and warm Wet season, followed by an almost equally warm Dry season from December to February. The south, on the other hand, has a pair of Dry seasons (December to February, and June to August) broken up by a pair of Wet seasons.

  • More about the weather and climate

The drier months from June to August and December to February are the best for wildlife watching in Uganda. There’s also plentiful sunshine at this time. In the wetter months, there’s the possibility that rain will cut off roads and wash out your primate trekking adventure.

Uganda’s central attraction is the opportunity to track one of the world’s last surviving mountain gorilla populations on the misty green slopes of Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This is arguably the ultimate...

Tailor Made Safaris

Popular safaris, east & central africa, southern africa, set departures, top destinations, indian ocean islands, “the pearl of africa”.

Uganda is simply incredible! It is a relatively small nation right in the centre of Africa. Uganda falls right at the division between Africa’s eastern, western, northern and southern regions and this is exactly why it’s so immensely diverse.

This beautiful country is home to the legendary ‘Mountains of the Moon’ and source of the Nile River, tropical rainforests, vast savannas, swamplands, rich culture, outstanding birdlife, the big 5 of African animals and so much more. If you had to choose only 1 African nation to visit and wanted to experience as much as possible within that time, it would be hard to beat what Uganda can provide.

With that being said, Uganda neighbours Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda,  which makes it the perfect country to combine with any of these on any East African safari. Visitors from all over the world are attracted by Uganda’s incredible primate diversity and tracking experiences. The main tourist attraction is the mountain gorillas and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park alone is home to half of the world’s population. Observing these incredible primates, or Uganda’s wild chimpanzees is the perfect addition to a classic safari in Kenya or Tanzania and this ranks very highly on our top recommendations!

For us, there are 2 distinct ways in which Uganda is visited:

  • The first and most common is in combination with another safari destination. These visitors typically spend between 1 to 7 nights in Uganda with viewing primates being the main focus.
  • The second and less-known way to visit Uganda, is to spend upwards of 7 nights and to experience the incredible diversity between its National Parks. This works particularly well because travel in Uganda can be particularly affordable for extended visits. If you are on a budget and want to maximize the bang for your buck, then this is a great way to do that.

Tip: Currently tracking mountain gorillas in Uganda is less than half the price per trek than it is in neighbouring Rwanda. This has increased tourism massively in Uganda for budget-conscious travellers.

Some Uganda inspiration for you :

  • Uganda has a population of roughly 43 million people that are comprised of more than 50 tribes.
  • English is Uganda’s national language which makes international travel a breeze.
  • Uganda is home to about half of the world’s mountain gorillas.
  • The Ugandan Shilling is the local currency.
  • Yellow Fever vaccinations are compulsory in order for visitors to gain entry to Uganda.
  • Visas are necessary for most tourists travelling to Uganda and may be obtained online prior to arrival.

Why we like it:

  • We love the incredibly warm and friendly people.
  • Uganda’s biodiversity is mind-blowing, particularly for primates and birds.
  • The great diversity of experiences from white water rafting to cultural experiences.
  • Uganda offers year-round safari tourism as it has fairly consistent temperatures.
  • Uganda is home to chimpanzees and mountain gorillas!
  • Uganda is great for budget travellers.

Uganda has year-round safari tourism and most places remain open during the rainy seasons. Similarly to Tanzania, most of the country has 2 dry seasons and 2 wet seasons. However, in general, Uganda has a high annual rainfall and it can rain year-round. That being said, when it does rain it is typically in short bursts of rain which last only a few hours leaving the rest of the day clear and sunny.

The best season for you to travel to Uganda depends on which of the 2 afore-mentioned styles of safari in Uganda you want to experience.

  • If you are visiting mainly to view the primates, it is best to visit during the dry seasons. These take place between December and February and between June and August when the rainforests are experiencing less rain. It is important to note that while there is less rain it does rain randomly and frequently, but just less so during the ‘dry’ season.
  • If you are coming to Uganda for an extended period of time to experience the rest of the wildlife and National Parks, particularly those with typical savannah, we would recommend travelling during the wetter months. This might sound a bit strange and counterintuitive but see below!

What nobody talks about:

An important fact that nobody talks about regarding the dry season in Uganda, is that the park authorities burn the grasses of the savanna/grassland in those National Parks that have them near the end of the dry season in preparation for the oncoming rains. What this means is that large sections of the parks are burnt and particularly unattractive for photography. There is also a great haze in the air which definitely affects photography and long-distance visibility.

If you can exchange increased rainfall and worse road conditions for lush green vegetation, clear crisp air and increased visibility then we recommend visiting in a wet season. The rainy seasons fall between March and May and again between September and December. Game viewing and wildlife density hardly changes between the wet and dry seasons.

It is important to note that gorilla tracking permit dates are not exchangeable. This means that if it does happen to rain on the day of your permit  you cannot reschedule. It is best to prepare for this with clothing and gear. This is another reason, we prefer gorilla tracking in one of the dry seasons as the risk of rain is decreased.

There are multiple forests in Uganda in which you can track wild chimpanzees. Some of these forests are more affordable than others, so why not track multiple families of these incredible primates on your next trip!?
