Relaunch November 2021

1. You must reapply for library access if your approval has expired

  • Do not visit an institution until your new application has been approved.
  • All information about applying for the Access Scheme is available on the SCONUL website .
  • Your own institution’s library is the body responsible for considering and processing your application. Please be patient and allow them time to deal with your application.
  • before you contact your library
  • before you contact a library you wish to visit or before contacting SCONUL.
  • Please remember access granted under the Scheme is a privilege and not a right.

2. Allow time for your application to be processed

  • An extremely high volume of applications is being processed.
  • How long your application takes depends on how many applications your institution receives.
  • In some cases you may need to wait up to 4 weeks.
  • Do not pressure library staff at your home institution - it will not speed up your application!
  • Do not call the library you wish to visit or the SCONUL office about your application - it will not speed up the process!

3. Check on the day you would like to visit whether the institution you would like to visit is participating

  • This allows for any sudden changes to related restrictions.
  • Check online at https://www.access.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access .

4. Prior access does not mean current access

  • Some institutions that previously participated in the scheme are not participating at this time.
  • You are not guaranteed access to an institution because you previously used it.
  • Check before you visit! https://www.access.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access .

What is the SCONUL Access Scheme?

visit sconul access 1

There are four 'bands' of membership:

  • Band A Borrowing: Research students and academic staff
  • Band B Borrowing: Part-time undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Band C Borrowing: Full-time postgraduates
  • Reference Band: Full-time undergraduates.

Borrowing entitlements are set by each institution and may vary.

How Do I join the scheme?

If you are a registered student or academic staff at the University of Exeter and want to visit other participating libraries...

  • Apply online via  SCONUL Access .   NB Only one application is required to access multiple libraries.  As part of this process you will see which institutions you are eligible to visit.
  • Wait to receive SCONUL Access reply email
  • Follow instructions i n the email
  • Read the   SCONUL Access User Guide
  • Check with host institution before visiting. Access may be restricted during busy periods (e.g. exams)

To qualify for SCONUL Access you must be registered as a library user in good standing (i.e. no library debts or rule infringements).

What about E-Resource Access?

The SCONUL access scheme does not provide access to the e-resources of the libraries you visit.

Some libraries may provide a 'walk in access' computer service with access to some resources - you should check this with the library before you visit.  You are likely to need to register each time you wish to use the service. Access is often available via a sole PC within the library so availability will be limited. The service will not provide access to all resources are some are not licensed for walk in use.

You should rely on the UoE resources which can be accessed at a distance. Check to see if the library you are visiting is a member of EDUROAM. If so, you will be able to login to the wifi network of the institution you are visiting as a guest user and connect through to the UoE resources.

Check the list of participating institutions on the EDUROAM website .

To connect to the EDUROAM service ...

  • Choose your wireless icon and search for available wireless networks
  • Select Eduroam and click the connect button
  • When asked for your username, type it in followed by @yourhomeuniversity.ac.uk ([email protected])
  • Provide your password and ‘Connect’

SCONUL Access

Books on a bookcase

The SCONUL Access scheme is a reciprocal national agreement which allows staff and students access to other UK university libraries.

Members of Durham University can access othe r academic libraries across the UK and Ireland through the  SCONUL Access scheme. This means, for example, you can use a local academic library in your hometown for study during the vacation. If you are on a distance-learning course, you can borrow from a local library rather than having to come to Durham.

Key messages for Access Scheme users

You must reapply for library access if your approval has expired.  You won’t be able to visit an institution until your new application has been approved, which will be processed by us here at Durham University. All information about applying for the scheme is available on the SCONUL website – please check this information before making an application.

Allow time for your application to be processed.  An extremely high volume of applications is being processed and in some cases, you may need to wait up to four weeks.

Check on the day whether the institution you intend to visit is participating. You can check online on the SCONUL Access webpages .

Prior access does not mean current access . Some institutions are not participating at this time – you can check the list of  SCONUL Access member libraries  to see which institutions are currently participating.

How can I apply for SCONUL Access?

  • Apply online via the  SCONU L  Access   w ebsite.
  • To be eligible, you must be "in good standing" with Durham University Library, which means you will have no overdue loans or unpaid fines.
  • For the online application, you should use your Durham University email address,   as well as the Library barcode on your Campus Card. This is a 14-digit number, beginning "20104".
  • Once your application has been accepted, save a copy of the verification email.
  • You need to submit only one form to apply for access to all libraries in the SCONUL Access scheme. You do not need to re-apply to access another library   It is always best to check what the requirements are at each library before visiting. Some libraries may apply their own restrictions, including periods of the year when SCONUL Access members cannot visit.

Which libraries can I use?

Use the  SCONUL Access  website to find institutions near you.

When visiting another library, make sure you take any required documentation or identification with you. In all cases, you will need to take:

  • the e-mail verification sent to you when you applied via the SCONUL Access website, and
  • your Durham University Campus Card

Additional identification may be required – please check with the library you want to visit.

What can I do?

Please be aware that not all universities accept all users: for example, some may allow access to academic staff only. When registering to use the scheme you will be able to check which universities you can visit.

Many UK universities are part of a reciprocal access scheme called SCONUL Access. This grants borrowing privileges to many types of library users working or studying at participating higher education libraries in the UK and Ireland.

SCONUL Access provides borrowing privileges for most:

  • Academic staff (on open or fixed term contracts)
  • Doctoral researchers (registered for a PhD, MPhil or similar qualification)
  • Part-time, distance learning and placement students
  • Full-time postgraduates
  • Students on placement of more than six weeks

SCONUL Access also provides a reference only service (i.e. you cannot borrow resources) for most:

  • Full-time undergraduate students
  • Staff of a few higher education libraries not participating in the reciprocal borrowing arrangements

For further details please visit the SCONUL website.

If you are a Brunel Student, click through to the SCONUL website and complete the application form. This sends us your application for processing. We undertake to process your application within 1 working day as far as possible. As long as you are fully enrolled, do not have overdue books or fees on your Library account, your membership will be approved and you will receive a membership email. You will need to show a copy of this at the University Library you wish to access. Please also check each Library's website to see if there are any other steps you need to take, opening hours etc.

Non-Brunel students will need to apply in the same way, using their home university in the "Attending" field. The time frame for processing applications varies by institution.

Deion Sanders says "I'm a father, not a baby daddy" about leaving Colorado with sons

Josh tolle | jun 25, 2024.

  • Colorado Buffaloes

Deion Sanders has reaffirmed his commitment to the Colorado Buffaloes, even as his sons, Shilo and Shedeur Sanders, and two-way star Travis Hunter will likely head into their final college season .

The Hall-of-Famer talked about becoming an empty nester on Big Noon Conversations with Joel Klatt on Monday. Sanders emphasized his role as a leader and father, distancing himself from the idea of following his sons to the NFL.

"I'm a leader of men, not a follower of men," he stated. "I'm a father, not a baby daddy. I lead my sons, I don't follow my sons."

He also highlighted his intention to remain at Colorado and dominate in his role.

Since his arrival in Boulder, there has been speculation about whether Sanders would remain at Colorado for an extended period of time or use early success as a stepping stone to head elsewhere. This kind of career brings turnover and those who excel at lower-tier programs don't stay there long. Sanders' tenure at Jackson State set a precedent for such speculation.

While he had a grand vision for the program and HBCU football, he left after three years, moving to Colorado. At the time, the Colorado job represented a step up but was also considered one of the less attractive vacancies in the Power Five conferences.

Sanders, 56, has reiterated his commitment to Colorado, suggesting he could stay anywhere from five to ten years or more. However, statements like these often hold little weight due to the rapidly changing landscape of college football. Also, his health has been in decline after multiple surgeries to remove blood clots in recent years. He recently showed off his amputated foot during an appearance on Good Morning America .

Colorado experienced the unpredictability of Mel Tucker, who was on a plane to Michigan State an hour after telling CU boosters he would be staying for years to come.

Ultimately, Sanders' commitment will be tested if Colorado shows significant improvement in 2024, attracting interest from other schools or wanting to fully retire will be attractive options. His dedication to the program will truly be measured by his response to such opportunities. Until then, his assurances of a long-term stay at Colorado remain a hopeful promise rather than a guaranteed reality.

Supreme Court upholds domestic violence gun restriction

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday upheld a federal law that prohibits people subjected to domestic violence restraining orders from having firearms, taking a step back from its recent endorsement of a broad right to possess a gun.

The court on an 8-1 vote ruled in favor of the Biden administration, which was defending the law — one of several federal gun restrictions currently facing legal challenges.

The ruling indicates that some longstanding gun laws are likely to survive despite the court's 2022 decision that expanded gun rights. In that case, the court for the first time ruled that there is a right to bear arms outside the home under the Constitution's Second Amendment.

guns nra meeting display

Writing for the majority in Friday's ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that since the United States was founded "our nation's firearm laws have included provisions preventing individuals who threaten physical harm to others from misusing firearms."

The provision at issue in the case "fits comfortably within this tradition," he added.

In reaching its conclusion, the court did not embrace some of the arguments made by the Biden administration in defense of the law, including that the government can disarm people who are not "responsible."

Attorney General Merrick Garland welcomed the ruling, saying the law "protects victims by keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals who pose a threat to their intimate partners and children."

The decision came just a week after gun rights advocates won a big victory when the court ruled that a federal ban on "bump stock" accessories for semi-automatic rifles, which make them fire more rapidly, was unlawful.

The case before the justices concerned Zackey Rahimi, a Texas man whose partner obtained a restraining order against him in February 2020. He argued that he cannot be prosecuted under the federal gun possession restriction in light of what the Supreme Court concluded. Rahimi’s lawyer, Matthew Wright, declined to comment.

Erich Pratt, senior vice president at Gun Owners of America, a gun rights group, said that while Rahimi is a "dangerous individual," the ruling "will disarm others who have never actually committed any domestic violence."

Although the vote in Friday's ruling was lopsided, with only conservative Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting, the ruling nevertheless exposed divisions among the justices on the gun rights issue, with five justices writing separate concurring opinions explaining their views.

Those extensive opinions will help shape how the court will approach future gun cases, several of which of currently pending.

The 2022 decision, in a case called  New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen , said gun restrictions had to be analyzed based on a historical understanding of the right to bear arms. As such, the decision raised questions about many existing gun restrictions that gun rights activists say are not anchored in historical tradition.

One of those other laws, which bars users of illegal drugs from possessing firearms, has drawn scrutiny in part because Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, has been charged with violating it and has mounted a constitutional challenge.

The three liberal justices on the conservative-majority court were all in the majority while making it clear they disagree with the 2022 ruling.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was appointed by President Joe Biden after that decision was issued, said the new case "highlights the apparent difficulty faced by judges on the ground" in deciding which gun laws should be upheld in light of the earlier ruling.

In his dissent, Thomas stuck to his view that the history of similar laws at the time of the nation's founding is determinative. Other justices are more willing to consider laws that are not exactly the same but have a similar effect.

"Not a single historical regulation justifies the statute at issue," Thomas wrote.

In Rahimi's case, his ex-partner, with whom he shares a child, obtained a restraining order after an incident in an Arlington, Texas, parking lot in 2019. Rahimi allegedly knocked the woman to the ground, dragged her to his car and pushed her inside, causing her to knock her head on the dashboard, prosecutors said in court papers. He also allegedly fired a shot from his gun in the direction of a witness.

Even while the protective order was in place, Rahimi was implicated in a series of shootings, including one in which he allegedly fired bullets into a house using an AR-15 rifle, prosecutors allege.

Rahimi faces state charges in the domestic assault and a separate assault against a different woman. But the case before the justices concerns his separate prosecution by the Justice Department for violating the federal gun possession law.

Rahimi ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six years in prison.

The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals applied the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Rahimi’s case and concluded last year that the law “fails to pass constitutional muster.”
