Best Time To Visit Okinawa: When To Go + When To Avoid

Last Updated on March 16, 2024

Japan’s southernmost prefecture is a tropical oasis brimming with cerulean beaches and powdery white sand. When thinking about the best time to visit Okinawa, there can be multiple answers due to its year-round subtropical climate, and the pros and cons of each season.

Knowing the best time to go for where you’re going and what you’re doing will be the focus of this post to give you some clarity during your trip planning. And it may just sway you to one season over the other after knowing all the facts and specific things to do during each part of the year.

In this blog post, I break down the weather in Okinawa by season and by month so you can get a good grasp of what to expect when planning a visit in any season. I cover everything so you can decide the best time to travel to Okinawa based on your travel style and preferences.

This post may contain affiliate links for the products I mentioned, but as always, all opinions are my own. I make a small commission, at no extra cost to you, when you make a purchase or a booking through these links. When is the best time to visit Okinawa?

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Okinawa is in the shoulder months; late April, October or November. Each of these months can offer mild daytime temperatures, low humidity, and extensive daylight hours for adventure.

The answer is painted with a rather broad brushstroke because deciding when to visit Okinawa is going to depend on what you want to see and do while you’re there.

Your Okinawa itinerary is likely to be entirely different from mine, so I’ve created this guide to help you make an informed decision to best suit the needs of your trip.

Before we get started though, let these questions marinate before you dive into the guide:

– Do you mind crowds?

– Do you plan on staying in urban areas or getting out in nature?

– How do hot weather and humidity impact you?

– Are you going diving?

If you’re here for any niche answers, here are some quick answers to common questions.

Cheapest Time To Visit Okinawa

The cheapest time to visit Okinawa is from December to February.

Since the temperatures dip, most of the beaches are closed, resorts are quiet, and local businesses either close or reduce their hours.

Affordable hotel rates and cheap flights are staples during this season, so if you’re looking to travel to Okinawa on a budget, this is a great time to visit.

Worst Time To Visit Okinawa

The worst time to visit Okinawa is during typhoon season, which runs from June 1st To November 30th.

You’ll see many articles supporting this claim. While that can be true in some ways, in my opinion, writing the entire island off for essentially half the year is a touch exaggerated.

The risk of a typhoon could interrupt your trip, but I wouldn’t let that dictate your plans. Especially if the only timeframe you have is within those months. As long as you arrive with a flexible itinerary and options for if/when the weather goes south, you’ll still have a memorable trip.

I was in Okinawa from late June through early August and nearly every day was a beach day for five weeks straight. Alternatively, when I was in Okinawa at the end of March going into early April (outside of typhoon season) it was overcast and rainy nearly every day. No matter when you arrive, the weather can always have other plans than what patterns predict.

I’d say the heat and humidity during the summer would be more of a reason to avoid those months since it’s sweltering and can be uncomfortable if you don’t like excessive heat. Knowing that you can decide if those months are the worst time for YOU to visit Okinawa.

My experience

I’ve visited Okinawa twice now. The first time I spent just over a month on the island from late June to early August, and the second was two weeks split between late March and early April.

On my first visit during typhoon season, most days were very hot and sunny while my spring visit was cooler and dreary nearly the entire time. This contradicts a lot of what you see online about the wet vs. dry season.

I say that to say this, even if you visit in the dry season you could be surprised by rain. In the same way you can have beautiful days during the wet season. The key is to pack accordingly and be flexible because no one can predict the weather.

As for how each visit went, summertime was brutally hot and extremely humid and spring was dreary and much colder than I had anticipated. So two completely opposite trips. Each trip was fulfilling in its own way, but I think visiting in May or October would have been better in terms of weather. Which is why I am extending that recommendation to you.

Okinawa geography overview

Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture, sandwiched between the East China and Philippine Seas. It’s typically assumed as one island, but it’s actually made up of over 160 different islands that span nearly 350 miles.

The main set of islands making up Okinawa is known, historically, as the Ryukyu Islands. Which is divided into a few key regions: Okinawa Honto (main island), Kerama Shoto (the Kerama Islands), Miyako Shoto (the Miyako Islands) and Yaeyama Shoto (the Yaeyama Islands).

Mt. Katsudake is the highest peak on Okinawa at just under 1500 ft (452 m). So there’s not much variation in terms of the islands’ topography.

Weather in Okinawa

You can expect nearly perfect tropical conditions year-round on Okinawa and any of the surrounding islands due to the prefecture’s location between two seas and proximity to the equator.

They have four seasons, but the year is typically divided into the wet and dry seasons. The dry season runs from October to April and the wet season runs from May to September.

Quick Look at Okinawa’s Weather + Seasons

Least crowded months in Okinawa : September or October

Summer in Okinawa

June – August

Aquatic adventure and underwater excursions are the name of the game for an Okinawan summer. The ocean temperatures are warm, the waters are clear, and there is an endless number of beaches to spread your beach towel over. This is the best time to travel to Okinawa for swimming.

Okinawa in June

The average temperature in June is around 82 F (~28 C).

Humidity during this time can make it feel much hotter than what the thermostat reads, so prepare for a tropical vacation. The crowds will be plentiful this month, especially with Japanese natives on holiday from the mainland.

Okinawa in July

The average temperature in July is around 85 F (~29 C).

The humidity is no joke this month. A ‘step outside and you’re in a sauna’ type of hot. It’s a good month to be in the water snorkeling over coral reefs, surfing breaks, or going island hopping. Attractions still fill up fast this month despite all the heat so book attractions and accomodations ahead of time.

Okinawa in August

The average temperature in August is around 85 F (~29 C).

August is almost always the hottest month of the year in Okinawa and the chances of a typhoon hitting are the greatest during this month. Towards the end of the month, tourism will slow down as kids go back to school. Fill your itinerary with water activities to help curb the heat and brutal humidity.

Things to do during summer in Okinawa

Island hopping in the Keramas

Hike to Ta-Taki Falls

Nago Summer Festival (July)

Kayaking and paddle boarding

Visit the Churami Aquarium

Ocean Expo Park Summer Festival (July)

Waves from the ocean crashing against the Sunabe Sea Wall fall in Okinawa

Fall in Okinawa

September and October

As the summer temperatures gradually subside, cultural celebrations are held all over Okinawa. Don’t be fooled though, this season still has hot enough weather for a midday dip in the ocean or a relaxing afternoon on a pristine white sand beach.

Okinawa in September

The average temperature in September is around 82 F (~28 C).

September and August can be compared quite similarly since typhoons are likely in September. The weather is humid and HOT.

Crowds will be thinning in September, so you’re less likely to experience crowds. Everything is accessible, but your plans might change if a typhoon hits. Some people have experienced flight cancellations to Okinawa entirely from typhoons, so make sure you don’t leave without getting travel insurance .

Okinawa in October

The average temperature in October is around 78 F (~29 C).

There are many upsides to visiting Okinawa in October. The island is finally getting a break from the sweltering summer temperatures, crowds have thinned, and prices have decreased going into the off-season. This is a sweet spot to visit given that it’s on the back end of typhoon season, but everything is still open.

Things to do during fall in Okinawa

Witness the Naha Tug-of-War (October)

Karate Day (October 25th)

Winter in Okinawa

November – February

Many travelers avoid winter in Okinawa due to the cooler daytime temperatures, but there are a plethora of reasons why this season is not to be overlooked. Japan’s earliest cherry blossoms bloom this season, whale watching is in its prime among the islands, and many cultural events take place into the new year.

Okinawa in November

The average temperature in November is around 72 F (~23 C).

November is significantly cooler compared to summer, and the typhoon season officially comes to an end at the end of the month. Ferries to other islands are still operational during this time before the weather really begins to cool heading into December.

Okinawa in December

The average temperature in December is around 67 F (~19 C).

The island “winter” is in full force when December rolls around. If your main reason for visiting Okinawa is to hit the beaches and go swimming, this is not the month to visit. This time of year is cheap and uncrowded and perfect for those interested in cultural activities.

Okinawa in January

The average temperature in January is around 63 F (~17 C).

By January, the beaches are closed for sunbathing and snorkeling, and the sea temperatures are chilly for a dive. Visit this month if you want to celebrate the New Year in Okinawa, view early-season cherry blossoms, or go whale watching.

Every year, Okinawa’s Shinshun no Utage, or New Year’s celebration is held at Shuri-jo Castle which features a recreation of the traditional ceremony that was once performed for the King of the Ryukyu Kingdom and all his officials.

Okinawa in February

The average temperature in February is around 64 F (~18 C).

Although the weather keeps everyone off the beaches, there are TONS of interesting events and happenings that could make a winter trip to Okinawa exciting. Cherry blossoms will likely be in peak blooms early this month, whales are playing in the surrounding islands, and you can dive for unique wildlife off the coast.

Things to do during winter in Okinawa

Tsuboya Pottery Festival (November)

Ryukyu Lantern Festival (December)

Okinawa Flower Carnival (February)

Motobu Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival (mid-January to mid-February)

Whale watching in the Kerama Islands

Diving for hammerhead sharks at Yonaguni Island

Lush green foliage descends down a hill to the coastline dotted with small villages during one of the best time to visit Okinawa

Spring in Okinawa

March – May

Okinawa and the surrounding islands are breathed back to life when spring flowers and warm weather blanket them once more in spring. Although the ocean temperatures are still cold this season, many beaches will begin to open going into summer.

Okinawa in March

The average temperature in March is around 67 F (~19 C).

While March isn’t technically the rainy season, it still does drizzle a bit this month so you’ll want to bring an umbrella and layers to combat the cooler weather. The sea temperatures are still pretty chilly this month and beaches are still closed, but it’s warm enough to do outdoor exploring comfortably like the Nagagusuku Castle ruins or shopping on Kokusai Street.

Okinawa in April

The average temperature in April is around 71 F (~22 C).

April warms the island enough for some of the beaches to be accessible. Take to any of the white sand beaches but note that the sea temperatures haven’t warmed just yet for swimming. Crowds are thin before the crowds of Holy Week arrive, prices are cheaper, and the weather is very comfortable this month.

Okinawa in May

The average temperature in May is around 76 F (~25 C).

All the beaches in Okinawa are open come May. If you’re planning a visit to Okinawa this month, it’s crucial that you avoid the first week, which is Holy Week. Travelers from the mainland flock here this month and as a result prices are inflated and there are crowds everywhere.

Outside of that time, the temperature is perfect for lounging at the beach, swimming, snorkeling, and hiking . Ferries are in full operation this month so you can book tickets to Miyako-Jima, Ishigaki, and Ie Islands.

Things to do during spring in Okinawa

Paantu Festival (May)

Ryukyu Kaiensai Fireworks Festival (April)

Golden Week (end of April through the first week of May)

Naha Hari Dragon Boat Races (May, during Golden Week)

Fireflies on Kume Island (mid-April to early May)

Higashi Village Azalea Festival (March)

All-Okinawa Yachimun Pottery Market (March)

Best Time to Visit Okinawa (in my opinion)

Outside of typhoon season, Okinawa doesn’t experience extreme seasons and the weather is typically favorable in some capacity year-round, so there really isn’t a bad time to visit.

To experience the true tropical nature of Okinawa, a visit during the summer renders the hottest temperatures and humidity . This season is perfect for water sports like diving since the water is clear and warm, island hopping, or leisure at the beach.

Spring and fall offer pleasant weather, typically minimal rain, and more affordable rates for accommodation. If your Okinawa itinerary is a hybrid between urban and nature activities, this season is great for an all-encompassing visit.

Winter is the coldest time of year to visit Okinawa, but given that the temperature stays around 60 F (16 C), you can still explore the island comfortably with the fewest crowds . It can be a good time if you’re planning to stay in urban areas or looking to travel on a budget .

I recommend visiting in the shoulder months in late April, October, or November. During these times the weather is still warm, humidity is low and the pricing will be slightly cheaper since these aren’t the busiest times to travel.

I was thinking about going to Okinawa in Mid-April to avoid golden week and take advantage of the beaches, sights, snorkeling and diving and also to avoid typhoon season.

Do you feel that going in October would be better?

April would be fine for sightseeing, but too cold for water sports/beaches. October would be a better fit because the summer temperatures are still lingering and the typhoons are usually gone by that month. Plus there are fewer crowds (:

Hope this helps, Aaren

Thank you for the details! We are planning to travel in November 2022 and hope Japan will ease on the Covid restrictions first. Appreciate your time on this useful site. Aloha from Oahu.

Glad you found this helpful, Cyndi (: I hope they ease up as well! I want to go back and visit so badly, but I hope your adventure is great!

November signs like a lovely time to visit! Not a fan of humidity or intense heat Haha. It sold to me when you said the gift goes away in nov Haha. Saving this for future trip. Really want to explore Okinawa and other islands

It’s a really special place! I’m heading there at the end of April and I’m excited to get to the summer weather fast! The first time I went the humidity was the worst I’ve experienced!! I’m looking forward to seeing your adventure!! (:

Love the details of this post and how you broke it down for every single month! I hope to visit Japan later this year so I will definitely save this!

YES! I am ALL about the details so I wanted to break it down to make trip planning 1000x easier! (:

I’d love to visit Okinawa one day! Your photos are absolutely amazing. You’ve made me want to visit even more.

It’s definitely an underrated place (: Go soon while the crowds aren’t there!

This is a really helpful guide to the weather in Japan, especially because I love to travel during the shoulder season. You’ve gone a step further for me by highlighting important things to know, typhoon risk, and crowd warnings each month. Thank you for saving me so much research time! It’s all right here for me.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, Jackie! It took me forever to get all the details, but it looks like all the hard work paid off! (:

When Is the Best Time to Visit Okinawa? Weather and Climate by Month

It may be warm, but it’s not always sunny in Okinawa! Being in a subtropical zone, many assume blue skies and placid weather, but that’s not always the case. Okinawa is a magnet for typhoons and rain, and it experiences a varied climate just like anywhere else. So, before planning your Okinawa trip, read our month-by-month guide to Okinawa weather and seasonal highlights and find the best time for your Okinawa holiday!

Being on almost the same latitude as Hawaii, it’s no surprise that Okinawa weather remains warm even in the dead of winter. January is also one of the driest months on the island chain, so it’s a good time for outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing, and scuba diving.

However, it can get windy, and sudden temperature drops are not unheard of, so you’ll need more than just a T-shirt to get by. We recommend a jacket, pants, and proper shoes, along with summer gear for when the sun shines. It’s a bit too cold for a long swim, but the sea can still be enjoyed in a wetsuit. January is also the peak time for whale watching!

Our Top Tips

Kerama Island Water Activities With Whale Watching

This tour lets you enjoy a bunch of water sport activities around Kerama Island, along with Okinawa whale watching from January to March!

Because of the warm weather, January is the start of the cherry blossom season in Okinawa, earlier than anywhere else in Japan, which you can celebrate at the Nago Cherry Blossom Festival and other locations. Another highlight is the New Year celebration at Shuri Castle Park , which features recreations of ceremonies dating back to when Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Average high: 21.6℃/70.88°F Average low: 16.8℃/62.24°F Average rainfall: 77.5 mm

Okinawa continues its “winter” in February, but you can’t exactly call it cold. Morning and night walks may require long-sleeve clothes and a light jacket, particularly if the breeze kicks up. Rain and wind-wise, February has pretty much the same weather as January.

February in Okinawa is another excellent month for cherry blossom viewing. Especially recommended is the Yaese Cherry Blossom Festival in late January to early February, where you’ll admire 500 cherry blossom trees both during the day and illuminated brilliantly at night!

Average high: 23.0℃/73.4°F Average low: 17.6℃/63.68°F Average rainfall: 81.5 mm

Okinawa weather will continue growing warmer as winter slips into spring from March. Rain can be unpredictable during this time, often hitting in short squalls, so a varied attire is recommended to avoid surprises. Still, March is the start of Okinawa’s swimming season for a number of beaches, so don’t forget your shirt, shorts, and swimming gear. The waters can still be a touch chilly, so a wetsuit may be a better fit for sensitive bodies.

In March, we recommend hitting up the picturesque Chura Sun Beach , a 700-meter-long stretch of pristine yellow sand near Naha Airport where you can enjoy snorkeling, banana boating, and mesmerizing sunsets. Nature lovers visiting Okinawa in March should also check out the Higashi Village Azalea Festival to admire a 50,000-flower spectacle of red, pink, purple, and white.

Average high: 25.4℃/77.72°F Average low: 20.3℃/68.54°F Average rainfall: 221 mm

April is an excellent month for sightseeing in Okinawaーit’s like early summer in Tokyo! You’ll be missing the rainy and typhoon season, making it a pretty sure bet for avoiding wild weather. Sunny days are common, and it’s definitely T-shirt weather (with maybe a long-sleeve top for chilly mornings.) But be sure to check the forecasts each day in case you’ll need rainwear, as wet days do occur.

Most beaches in Okinawa will be fully opened by April, although long swims might give you a chill. Early April is also the last chance for whale watching in Okinawa until they return in late December. Keep in mind that late April is the beginning of Japan’s Golden Week public holiday period , so expect crowds and prices to increase.

Those wanting to party should join the Ryukyu Kaiensai Fireworks Festival , held in April on Ginowan Tropical Beach. This mesmerizing display combines fireworks with Okinawan music and food, and is the earliest summertime fireworks show in Japan. April is also when the dazzling deigo (erythrina variegata) begins to bloom, which is the prefectural flower of Okinawa.

Average high: 26.8℃/80.24°F Average low: 22.3℃/72.14°F Average rainfall: 100.5 mm

The first days of May in Okinawa are crowded because of Golden Week. The end of Golden Week also ushers in the rainy season, although cloudy days without rain and even sunshine is still not uncommon!

It’s difficult to predict just how wet the Okinawa weather in May will be. Some years have had enormous rainfalls of over 600 mm, while 2023 barely exceeded 100 mm, and 2018 had merely 33 mm. So, if you decide to book a trip in May, you’ll just have to take the Okinawa weather as it comes, and prepare itineraries and clothing for both good and bad days. Thankfully, rain in Okinawa doesn’t usually last the whole day, so you can still get outdoors even if the forecast is gloomy.

With daily temperatures often brushing against 30℃/86°F, you’ll definitely feel the heat and humidity. A lot of indoor spaces will be heavily air-conditioned, so if you’re sensitive to cold, make sure to also bring a button-up top or something to drape over your shoulders. Outside, it’s strictly summer wear with light, breathable clothing and raincoats on hand in case of sudden downpours.

Tip: Prepare yourself with our complete guide to Japan’s rainy season.

Be sure to catch the Naha Haarii held in May, where locals race against each other in dragon-shaped boats to give thanks to the sea and pray for bountiful hauls.

Average high: 29.7℃/85.46°F Average low: 25.7℃/78.26°F Average rainfall: 400.5 mm

June is when Okinawa's rainy season kicks into full gear, and those who missed the rain in May will not be so lucky in June. Rainfall, temperatures, and humidity are all high, so you’ll feel hot and sticky. Although the sun is often blocked by clouds, it does shine on occasion in June, so be sure to have a hat and sunglasses handy.

While days over 30℃/86°F are common in June, the ocean promises a refreshing swim while hosting activities like snorkeling and sea kayaking. The rainy season wraps up by the end of June, making it a better time to book a trip if you’re not keen on the rain. Although, as the humidity lightens, the heat ramps up. June is also before the summer holiday period in Japan, so it’s often less crowded.

Blue Cave Snorkeling and Diving in Okinawa

Explore the famous Blue Cave in Okinawa and see all kinds of marine life on this snorkeling and diving tour.

Mid-June is the start of Eisa Night in Okinawa City, where you can watch street performances of traditional dances and other folk traditions after the sun goes down on weekends. However, June is typically the beginning of typhoon season in Okinawa, so activities may be unexpectedly canceled.

Average high: 32.8℃/91.04°F Average low: 27.4℃/81.32°F Average rainfall: 92 mm

By July, the rainy season should mostly be over as Okinawa enters peak summer. There’s typically not much rain, making it a popular month for the ultimate summer holiday. Temperatures regularly top 30℃/86°F, and will only drop to the mid-20s (around 77°F), so you’ll be spending most of your time by the beach or pool. However, a refreshing wind often keeps it from becoming unbearably hot like mainland Japan.

While July is busy, most Japanese people haven't begun their summer holidays early in the month, so crowds can be avoided with smart planning. Typhoons can approach or make landfall in Okinawa, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and prepare alternative plans.

Being in the middle of summer, July is filled with all sorts of festivities, making it an excellent time to experience Okinawan culture and relish the joyous local spirit.

Average high: 31.4℃/88.52°F Average low: 26.6℃/79.88°F Average rainfall: 738.5 mm

The scorching summer heat will continue throughout August, so if a holiday by the beach or pool sounds like a dream, then August is for you. However, it’s also vacation time for Japanese travelers, as the summer “ obon ” holiday period falls in mid-August. If you’re planning to visit Okinawa in August, it’s best to book accommodation and flights as early as possible, or you risk missing out.

Typhoons are also common in Okinawa in August. Be sure to find a hotel with indoor entertainment in case you have to stay inside, and always keep an eye on the news.

The 10,000 Eisa Group performance is held on the first Sunday in August on Naha’s lively Kokusai Street. There are also many other eisa festivals throughout the month, like the Okinawa Zento Eisa Matsuri, which is Okinawa’s largest, so be sure to watch one when visiting Okinawa in August!

Average high: 31.8℃/89.24°F Average low: 26.4℃/79.52°F Average rainfall: 204.5 mm

Okinawa weather in September is still very warm, making beaches and resort pools the places to be. Unlike most of mainland Japan, which begins to cool down in September, it’s still 100% summer in Okinawa, and days topping 30℃/86°F are the norm, although it may start to get milder by the end of the month.

Unfortunately, typhoons still pose a threat in September, so always be up-to-date with the news before making plans. Heavy bouts of rain can hit the islands, and you may have to spend a day or two inside. If you decide to brave the rough weather, be sure to wear waterproof gear, as the rain itself is often cooler than in summer.

If you’re in Okinawa in September, we recommend the Ginowan Hagoromo Festival in Ginowan City. Spanning two days, the festival attracts about 150,000 visitors who come to enjoy fireworks, parades in colorful costumes, local food, and much more.

Average high: 28.8℃/83.84°F Average low: 23.7℃/74.66°F Average rainfall: 81.0 mm

October is when Okinawa weather starts to cool downーalthough temperatures will still get up to 30℃/86°F. Days are often sunny and rainfall low, making October an excellent time to get outdoors and snap photos of Okinawa’s gorgeous beaches. The ocean waters are still warm, so you can swim without feeling cold.

By the end of October, minimum temperatures will start dropping to the low 20s (around 73°F), and long-sleeve shirts and pants may be necessary for colder evenings. Typhoons can also approach Okinawa in October, so don’t let your guard down.

Shoppers should make time for the Okinawa Industrial Festival , where traditional crafts and food are sold in the biggest local products exhibition on the islands. October is also famous for the Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival , one of Okinawa’s biggest events, where around 15,000 participants fight over an enormous 200-meter-long rope. The 3-day event fills Naha with fun side events and a festive atmosphere!

Average high: 25.2℃/77.36°F Average low: 20.1℃/68.18°F Average rainfall: 56.5 mm

November continues the trend of falling temperatures, bringing down the maximum to the mid to low 20s (around 75°F). It’s a very comfortable range that many prefer to the sweltering heat of Okinawan summer. Along with light summer clothes, packing regular pants and long sleeves with a light jacket is recommended. While rare, there has also been the occasional typhoon in November, so it’s worth keeping an ear out for alerts just in case.

Beaches are still nice in November, and although the water and outside temperature may be too chilly for a long leisurely swim, snorkeling, diving, and other marine activities can be enjoyed with a wetsuit. It’s also a good time to venture out to some of Okinawa’s historical attractions, like Shuri Castle and the Katsuren Castle Ruins.

You may want to leave the jacket behind if you’re heading to the Okinawa International Carnival , where motorcycle parades, lively music, dancing, and throngs of partying people should keep things hot enough for any travelers wanting to experience the thrilling cosmopolitan vibe of Okinawa.

Average high: 22.2℃/71.96°F Average low: 17.2℃/62.96°F Average rainfall: 183 mm

Okinawa weather in December will again grow cooler, with temperatures often dropping down to the mid-teens (around 60°F). While not ideal for swimming, beaches can still be enjoyed, as can activities like scuba diving. December is also an excellent time to head inland to uncover Okinawa’s vast forests and mangroves, such as the Yambaru National Park or the Hija River. The lower temperatures also tempts one into Okinawa’s natural hot springs!

While still warm, strong ocean winds that often blow onto Okinawa can make it seem colder. Light clothing should suffice most of the time, but for early-morning or evening walks, you may want to stick on long pants and a sweater.

You won’t see any snow in December on Okinawa, but you can still get into the winter spirit by attending the Itoman Peaceful Illumination light-up event at the Kanko Noen (Tourist Farm) in Itoman.

Okinawa Weather FAQ

What is the best month to visit okinawa.

Due to its warm climate, Okinawa can be enjoyed all throughout the year. The main thing to consider when planning a trip to Okinawa is whether you want to swim, in which case spring, summer, and autumn are the best times to visit Okinawa (from around April to October).

However, this period also includes Japan’s rainy season (early May to late June), and typhoons can approach anytime between May to November. This is unfortunately a risk you’ll have to take when visiting Okinawa in and around summer.

For a stronger chance at experiencing Okinawa without wild weather, then aim for one of the winter months (December to February). This is the tourist off-season and prices are cheaper, and many marine activities can still be enjoyed with a wetsuit.

Alternatively, catch the start of the beach season in March and April, which is still before the rainy and typhoon season. Of course, as with any tropical destination, the climate is fickle, so you’re never guaranteed a holiday without rain or strong winds.

Also to contend with in Okinawa are other tourists. Prices increase during peak Japanese holiday periods, and hotels, flights, and tours book out fast. Many Japanese travelers flock to Okinawa around Golden Week (late April to early May) and for the summer holiday season (July and August), so if you can’t find an alternative time, we suggest making reservations as soon as possible.

However, June is a fairly quiet time for tourism in Okinawa. While part of the rainy season, the wet weather tends to wrap up by the end of the month if not earlier, and once the sun comes out, it’ll be like the middle of summer. Outside of the Silver Week public holiday period in mid-September, autumn is likewise at the tail end of the busy season. Aside from the typhoon risk, autumn stays warm in Okinawa, promising summer vibes even when it’s already cold in mainland Japan.

How Hot Does Okinawa Weather Get?

July, August, and September are the hottest months in Okinawa, with average high temperatures of 32.8℃/91.04°F (July), 31.4℃/88.52°F (August), and 31.8℃/89.24°F (September) in 2023. While the temperature doesn’t cool down much overnight, Okinawa doesn’t tend to get unbearable days of over 35℃/95°F like mainland Japan.

How Cold Does Okinawa Weather Get?

Winter coats are not in demand on sub-tropical Okinawa, where the average low temperature in 2023 was 14.9°C/58.82°F for January, at the peak of winter. However, cool breezes may force you to put on a light jacket and long pants in and around the winter months.

When Is Typhoon Season in Okinawa?

Peak typhoon season in Okinawa usually starts in July and continues throughout August and September. During these three months, around 4-5 typhoons will head towards Okinawa, which will cause 1-3 days of powerful winds, heavy rain, and strong waves. Needless to say, it’s best to stay indoors during a typhoon.

It's also not uncommon for typhoons to approach Okinawa in June and October, and sometimes even May and November. The only way to guarantee a typhoon-free trip is by visiting Okinawa in winter (Dec-Feb) or early spring (March-April), although you’d be very unlucky to encounter one in May or November.

When Is Okinawa’s Rainy Season?

On average, the rainy season in Okinawa starts around May 10 and finishes June 21. This is almost an entire month earlier than Tokyo and other places on mainland Japan. However, even if you avoid the rainy season in Okinawa, you may still encounter rainfall. For example, August was actually the wettest month of the year in 2023.

When is the best time to visit okinawa.

Generally speaking for Okinawa, the best time to visit Okinawa is in the shoulder seasons, during April or May, and October or November.

While the word ‘best’ is up for interpretation, the shoulder seasons offer smaller crowds, milder weather, and lower costs! There is less competition for your dream accommodations, and fewer people at the best beaches.

My Experience in Okinawa

I spent an amazing 45 days in Okinawa . I arrived on December 6, and left on January 19 – right in the middle of winter! Especially if you only have one week in Okinawa and want a perfect itinerary, the time of year matters.

As you can see from the photos in this article, the weather was still so warm outside! We had plenty of beach days, as well as some cozy winter storm days. I often wore a bikini and a sundress, but always made sure to have a warm jacket and rain jacket for any changes in the weather.

We did a lot of snorkeling in Okinawa and almost always needed in a 3mm wetsuit. The visibility was insanely good, and we saw so much aquatic life since there were fewer people in the water!

The downside of traveling in December-January is a lot of restaurants had shorter hours, or were closed completely. However, with fewer travelers, the places we did go were cheaper, and we got to connect more with the locals.

While there are 4 seasons, the year is typically broken into a wet and dry season. Wet months are from June to September, with the most rain in June at almost 600mm of rainfall.

The ocean beckons with increasing warmth throughout the season. Sea temperatures rise from a cool 21°C (70°F) in March to a comfortable 26°C (79°F) by May, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Summer (June, July, August)

Summer in Okinawa is a tropical paradise that demands respect for the sun’s intensity. Scorching days average between 28°C (82°F) and 33°C (91°F), with nights offering little respite at 24°C (75°F) and 28°C (82°F).

Humidity soars, reaching upwards of 80%, providing a free sauna-like experience. The high humidity during the summer months will make it feel much hotter than it reads on the thermometer, so pack accordingly and stay hydrated!  Typhoons , though rare, can disrupt travel plans during this season. Be sure to have a good rain jacket and umbrella to withstand the intense precipitation.

Ocean temperatures reach their peak, averaging a hot 28°C (82°F), making it ideal for water sports enthusiasts. However, the increased surface temperature can affect coral health, and visibility slightly decreases compared to spring.

Autumn (September, October, November)

The rain subsides and temperatures drop in November, making it a perfect time for cultural events and indoor activities. Ocean temperatures begin to cool slightly, although they remain pleasantly warm at around 25°C (77°F) in September and 23°C (73°F) by November. Visibility remains excellent, offering stunning underwater views as the coral reefs prepare for winter.

Winter (December, January, February)

Winter travel in Okinawa is an underrated time of year. This is the best time to visit for some tropical life in the heart of the cold season, especially if you’re traveling from the Northern mianland. Stick around for the chance to sport a humpback whale, and join in on the lively cultural celebrations!

Winter in Okinawa offers a relief from the mainland’s biting cold, with mild days and cool nights. Average highs range from 18°C (64°F) in December to 23°C (73°F) in February, with lows dipping to 13°C (55°F) and 17°C (63°F) respectively.

Occasional bursts of chilly winds can bring temperatures down even further, and although rain increases slightly, it rarely dampens plans.

Ocean temperatures continue their descent, reaching 21°C (70°F) by February, making water activities less appealing for most. However, visibility remains excellent for divers and snorkelers who don’t mind the cooler waters.

Top Things To Do In Okinawa

Of all the things to do in Okinawa, this is my top list of the things you can’t miss out on, no matter what time of year you visit Okinawa! These are open year-round and were my favorite things to do in Okinawa.

Charumi Aquarium

By far the biggest attraction on the island, The Okinawa Charumi Aquarium is among the best aquariums in the world. The responsible practices of rehabilitation and education are top-tier. They even release the dolphins back into the wild after a few years so they don’t become reliant on humans.

The biggest ‘attraction’ (if you can call an animal that) is the Whale Shark. So breathtaking to see such a massive creature up close.

Hike Hijio Waterfall

Hijio Waterfall is an incredible stop in the northern region of the island and very easy to get to. The 45 hike to the falls crosses a dreamy suspension bridge in the forest and leads to a stunning area to watch the water cascade down the hillside.

Especially if you go in the off-season, you’ll have the waterfall to yourself, another great reason why winter is the best time to visit Okinawa!

Snorkel Gorilla Chop

Okinawa has some of the best snorkeling locations I’ve ever been to. Of all the locations I snorkeled at, Gorilla Chop was by far the best. Maybe even the best I’ve ever seen in my life! This easy-to-access location is filled with life. It is accessible year-round, although water will be a bit chillier in the winter, so be sure to get a wetsuit!

The parking is free, and so is water access! Please be careful to not touch the coral or any aquatic life, and never feed the fish!

Summary - The Best Time To Visit Okinawa

Okinawa is undeniably a great place to go at any time of year. The tropical landscape, turquoise blue water, vibrant culture, and aquatic life have something for every type of traveler. But, when is the best time to visit Okinawa?

The shoulder seasons of April and May, or September and October offer mild temperatures, smaller crowds, and the beautiful summery atmosphere that so many people love. However, if I were to go back to Okinawa, it would be in February.

In February there are no travel crowds, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, the rain is low, and best of all… humpback whale migration. It’s not often you get to see such beautiful creatures in the wild, and it’s relatively easy!

A Month-by-Month Guide to Okinawa

Furuzamami beach on Zamami island, Kerama archipelago, Okinawa

Thanks to its year-round warm weather, Okinawa is a fantastic destination to visit at any time. The best season for you will depend on exactly what you want to do on the island, so here’s a monthly guide to help you choose.

The southernmost prefecture in Japan, Okinawa is a gorgeous island chain home to stunning beaches, abundant marine life and fascinating historical sights from its time as the independent Ryukyu Kingdom. Its main island – also called Okinawa – is where most of the popular attractions are located, however there are also numerous smaller and more remote islands you can explore.

Although often considered a summer destination, Okinawa’s subtropical climate means a trip here is worth taking any month of the year. As with the rest of Japan, each season brings its own special highlights and activities. Here, Culture Trip sets out what you can expect from each month, so you can decide exactly when to visit this pristine paradise.

January-March: balmy weather, early cherry blossoms, obon and whales

The winter season in Okinawa is one of the quieter times to visit, and tourists benefit from smaller crowds and lower prices. The mild and mostly dry weather brings temperatures of around 15-20C, so you can enjoy some time at the beach even if it’s not quite hot enough for sunbathing.

The climate also means that Japan’s famous cherry blossom season arrives earlier in Okinawa than on the mainland. Here, the sakura (cherry blossom) generally bloom between mid-January and mid-February, and several hanami (flower-viewing) festivals take place across the island during this time. Many of the cherry trees in Okinawa are of the kanhizakura variety, which bloom a deeper shade of pink than many species elsewhere in the country, giving the season a special Okinawan twist.

Another major event during this time is the New Year holiday, with lots of domestic travel and closure of shops, restaurants and other attractions at the beginning of January. If you travel at this time, don’t miss the celebrations at Shuri Castle. This traditional three-day event features music and dance performances showcasing Okinawa’s unique history and culture.

While all the usual tourist attractions remain open during the winter, there’s one activity you can only do during this season: whale watching. Humpback whales migrate across the Pacific Ocean to Okinawa’s warmer waters to breed, and daily boat tours run to the nearby Kerama Islands, where you have the best chance of spotting these majestic mammals up close.

April-June: fireworks, dragon boat race and Golden Week

As winter fades into spring, temperatures rise and the beach season in Okinawa officially begins. April is one of the most pleasant months for sightseeing, as the temperature reaches around 25C without too much humidity. It’s also when the spectacular Ryukyu Kaiensai fireworks display takes place in Ginowan. This festival combines music with thousands of breathtaking fireworks to light up the night sky in an event you’ll never forget.

In May the annual Naha Dragon Boat Race, known as the hari , captivates audiences with competitions between narrow, elaborately decorated Okinawan boats. As well as Naha, hari take place in other cities and islands across the prefecture, and are held to pray for safety at sea. There’s a short rainy season from early May to early June, when temperatures and humidity also increase. The end of June can be a great time for scuba diving and other water sports, after the sea gets warmer but before the influx of summer tourists.

Naha Dragon Boat Race takes place every year in May

If possible, it’s best to avoid travelling during Japan’s Golden Week, which runs from the end of April to early May. This series of consecutive national holidays sees domestic travel (and prices) jump astronomically.

July-September: watersports, Eisa and island hopping

The summer in Okinawa is the hottest time of year, with temperatures pushing as high as 35C. Naturally, this is the peak time for visitors, and attractions can get crowded. This is particularly true during the Obon holiday in August, when lots of Japanese travel. The glorious weather makes it the best time of year for hitting the beach – head out to one of the lesser-frequented islands in the prefecture to find a more secluded spot.

Locals flock to Okinawa during the summer months, when temperatures reach highs of 35C

Summer time is festival time in Japan, and Okinawa is no different. One of the largest celebrations is the Eisa dance festival in August. Eisa is a traditional Okinawan performing art, and during the festival 10,000 dancers come together to honour the spirits of their ancestors. They parade through the streets, dancing dynamically in authentic costumes, and accompanied by taiko (drums) and sanshin (stringed instruments) in one of the island’s liveliest displays.

The warm sea temperatures Okinawa experiences in the summer also make it an amazing time to get out in the water, whether that’s scuba diving, snorkelling, paddle boarding, surfing, or any of the other water sports on offer. Be aware that this is also typhoon season though, which can occasionally wreak havoc with travel plans.

October-December: Shuri Castle Festival, illuminations and cooler weather

As summer blends into autumn, we approach another of the best times to visit Okinawa. The peak season ends, bringing tourist numbers down, but the weather remains pleasantly warm (between 20-25C) and less humid. As the end of the year approaches the weather gets cooler and the island quieter, with the exception of the busy New Year holiday period. It’s still possible to dive and snorkel at this time of year. Though the water won’t be as warm as in the summer months, the crystal-clear waters mean there’s plenty of marine life to admire.

The Shuri Castle Festival – one of Naha’s biggest and most impressive – takes place at the end of October. It celebrates the legacy of the Ryukyu kings of old through a procession in full period costume, plus music, dancing and other cultural performances. After dark, the castle park is beautifully illuminated with hundreds of candles. And this isn’t the only light-up event taking place. End-of-year illuminations are common across Okinawa (and mainland Japan) from late November. Some of the highlights include those at the Southeast Botanical Gardens, Itoman City’s Lights of Peace, the Ryukyu Lantern Festival and Kanucha Resort’s Stardust Fantasia in Nago city.

AN OVERVIEW OF OKINAWA’S WEATHER

If you’re thinking about visiting Okinawa, you’re in for a treat weather-wise. Okinawa is more tropical and closer to the equator than the mainland Japan .

Okinawa has a subtropical climate , which means that it is warm and humid throughout the year. The average temperature ranges from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius (75 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year.

Because of the mild temperatures throughout the year, Okinawa only really experiences two real seasons : wet and dry.

The wet season typically lasts from May to early October, whereas the dry season typically lasts from late October to April.  The wet season itself can be divided into the rainy season from May to June and typhoon season from July to October.

But don’t be misled by these terms; it doesn’t actually rain cats and dogs every day. It’s possible that there will be a few showers and a little rain, but it’s not a deal-breaker.

If you decided to visit Okinawa during the “wet season” from June to July, it will honestly be stunning most of the time. You might experience some typhoon remnants, but it will still be worth it. And if you’re wondering if there’s a bad time to go, we don’t really think there is, except for the chillier months from November to February. It’s still not that horrible even then. So, what is the ideal time to travel to Okinawa? We personally think it’s May to September. And according to a local, may is the best month to visit. This is also when we went on our honeymoon trip to Okinawa. So based on our own experience, you won’t regret visiting Okinawa in May!

HIGH SEASON | May – November

LOW SEASON | December – April

HIGH AND LOW SEASONS IN OKINAWA

As we travelled to Okinawa during May, we experienced the end of the high season and the start of the low season. Understanding the high and low seasons is crucial when planning your trip to Okinawa as it will affect the availability and cost of accommodations and activities.

The high season in Okinawa runs from late March to early May and from late July to early September. During these periods, the weather is ideal for swimming, and the island becomes packed with tourists. With many visitors, the price of hotels and flights can be expensive, and it may be challenging to find affordable accommodation . However, there are several advantages to visiting during the high season. With the many festivals and events occurring during this time, there’s never a dull moment. You’ll have the chance to experience the Okinawan culture to its fullest and meet many like-minded people. The beaches and tourist spots are lively and bustling, making for a fun and exciting vacation.

On the other hand, the low season is from October to February, with the exception of the holiday season from December to early January. The weather is cooler and may not be suitable for swimming, but you’ll get the chance to enjoy Okinawa’s scenic views without the crowds. Moreover, the hotels and flights during this period tend to be much cheaper, making it an excellent option for budget travellers. However, some of the tourist attractions and restaurants may have shorter hours or be closed for the season. It is also essential to note that some facilities may be closed for maintenance or renovation during this time, so make sure to check ahead.

The best time to visit Okinawa for budget travellers would be the low season, which runs from October to February, with the exception of the holiday season. During this time, the hotels and flights are cheaper, and you can take advantage of the low prices to explore the island. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that the weather during this season is cooler and may not be suitable for swimming or water activities.

Overall, understanding the high and low seasons in Okinawa is essential when planning your trip . Each season has its advantages and disadvantages, so choose the one that fits your preferences and budget.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT OKINAWA JAPAN

The best time to go to okinawa to experience the best weather.

MAY TO JUNE AND OCTOBER TO FEBRUARY

So, here’s a shocker: rainy season is actually the ideal time to visit Okinawa in our opinion if you want great weather. Although it may sound like we are having a laugh, just bear with us.

Until the typhoon season begins in roughly July, August, and September, the rainy season isn’t particularly intense.

Some web sources might advise you to completely avoid this period because it is in the rainy season. But in all honesty, we believe they are relying more on data than actual experience.

Most locals will tell you that from mid-May to mid-July, you are most likely to only experience a little rain on a few occasions. And this was certainly the case for us when we visited in May 2019. They will also tell you that even in the middle of dry season, you might still experience

Due to how hot and humid July and August are, we didn’t put them in our list of the best months to visit Okinawa for the best weather. You’ll have a far better time in May or October, we promise.

Although October to February aren’t too bad weatherwise either. During these months, the temperatures are cooler, and the humidity is lower, making it more comfortable for travellers.

THE BEST MONTH TO VISIT OKINAWA TO GO TO THE BEACH

MAY TO JUNE AND OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER

Make sure you choose the proper time of year to travel to Okinawa if you want to enjoy a beach vacation. You don’t want to be stranded in a storm or melt in the hot sun, I assure you. So, when is the ideal time to travel there? Let me explain it to you in more detail.

If you’re a sun worshipper, then June is your month! Although hotter than May, the temperature is not as oppressively hot as in July and August.  Which is ideal for going to the beach and island-hopping. And don’t worry, the rainy season hasn’t fully set in yet, so you won’t be stuck inside all day.

But don’t worry if you don’t like the heat. The other months (June, October and November) are all also rather fantastic to visit the beach. They all receive top marks in our books for having pleasant weather and avoiding typhoons from ruining your trip.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT OKINAWA TO AVOID THE CROWDS

LATE MAY TO JUNE, SEPTEMBER TO OCTOBER AND DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, you might want to consider visiting Okinawa during the off-season. While Okinawa is a popular tourist destination year-round, there are definitely times when it’s easier to avoid crowds than others.

The summer months of July and August, as well as the Japanese holiday seasons of Obon (late April/early May) and Golden Week, are often the busiest times to visit Okinawa (mid-August). During these times, the beaches are packed, and popular attractions can be overwhelming.

Consider going in May/June or September/October, which are the shoulder seasons, if you want a more tranquil experience. This is certainly why we chose to have our honeymoon in Okianwa in May.

The weather is still fantastic during these months, and you can frequently find affordable accommodation and flight deals. Okinawa’s attractions and beaches are less crowded in these months, making it simpler for you to take advantage of everything the islands have to offer.

Consider visiting during the winter months of December through February if you really want to avoid the crowds. You’ll have the beaches nearly to yourself, and popular sights will be lot calmer, even though it may be a bit chilly. You’ll also get to sample the special winter festivals and cuisine of Okinawa. Just remember to bring some warm clothing!

If you’re planning to travel to Okinawa on a budget, it’s important to consider the cheapest time to visit.

A BREAK DOWN OF THE OKINAWA WEATHER BY MONTH

Okinawa’s weather in january.

MAX TEMPERATURE | 19 C (66 F)

MIN TEMPERATURE |  13 C (55 F)

If you’re looking to escape the winter chill and have a beachy getaway, January might not be the best time to visit Okinawa. The weather typically stays in the 60s, and the beaches are largely closed. Brrr! Hence, if you’re eager to go island hopping or snorkelling, we would advise you wait until April or May.

It’s also definitely not bikini weather in January, so you can leave your beachwear at home if you’re heading to Okinawa at this time of year.

On the other hand, if you’re interested in celebrating New Year’s in Okinawa, you’re in luck! The “Shinshun no Utage” is a traditional ceremony that was once performed for the King of the Ryukyu Kingdom and his officials, and it’s held at Shuri-jo Castle. However, the castle suffered a major fire in late 2019, so the ceremony may be held elsewhere this year. It’s definitely a unique experience worth considering if you’re in Okinawa for the holidays!

On the other hand, you’re in luck if you want to ring in the new year on Okinawa! At Shuri-jo Castle, a traditional ritual known as “Shinshun no Utage” is held in honour of the former Ryukyu Kingdom king and his dignitaries. It’s definitely a unique experience worth considering if you’re in Okinawa for the holidays!

Note however, that the castle suffered a major fire in late 2019, so the ceremony may be held elsewhere until the castle renovations have been completed.

PROS | few-zero crowds

CONS | the coldest month

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN FEBRUARY

MAX TEMPERATURE | 19C (66F)

MIN TEMPERATURE |  13C (55F)

If you’re considering a trip to Okinawa in February, listen up! Although it’s usually a tad warmer than January, it’s definitely the wetter of the two months, so be sure to pack a light rain jacket to avoid getting soaked.

In February, the temperature rarely rises beyond 21C degrees, so it’s not exactly hot. However, February is the best time to visit Okinawa if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Japanese cherry blossoms, February is your go-to month.

Keep a watch out for the most recent projections as these lovely blooms often bloom in Okinawa in late January to early February, which is sooner than on the mainland.

CONS | cold to wet winter month

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN MARCH

MAX TEMPERATURE |22 C (71F)

MIN TEMPERATURE | 16 C (60F)

March in Okinawa can be a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. You might encounter some cloudy and rainy days during the first half of the month, but don’t let that put you off entirely! It’s not the rainy season per se, but still, you’ll want to come prepared with a trusty umbrella and some warmer clothing to keep the chill at bay.

But don’t fret too much, because things start to look up in the latter half of March, with temperatures rising up to a pleasant 23C range. As a result, several of the island’s beautiful beaches become accessible, allowing you to catch some rays and dig your toes into Okinawa’s renowned soft, powdery sand.

If you’re looking to dodge the crowds and save a little cash, March could be a good option. But if you’re seeking the ultimate beach experience and ideal weather, you might want to wait a bit and consider coming in April or May.

PROS | temperatures start to rise and beaches begin to open up

CONS |still too cold to enjoy certain outdoor activities

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN APRIL

MAX TEMPERATURE | 23C (73F)

MIN TEMPERATURE | 18C (64F)

All beaches in Okinawa officially open up about halfway through the month of April, so if you’re a beach lover, this is great news for you! The weather is warm and pleasant, but not oppressively hot and humid, and the crowds are still low, making it an ideal time to visit. Plus, you may find that prices are a bit cheaper, as April is considered to be within the shoulder season before the busy Holy Week arrives.

Now, we have been told that April can quite cloudy and rainy, despite it technically being in the dry season. Really, you can never fully predict the weather on tropical islands. You might have better weather in July in the middle of typhoon season. So, make sure to check the forecast before you depart.

Although the water temperature may still be a bit chilly, around 21C degrees, if you’re up for a dip, go for it!

Remember, Okinawa is not only about the beach though. There are so many other activities you can do , like exploring waterfalls, hopping around islands, and snorkelling.

If you’re interested in these activities, we would suggest it’s better to wait until May or June when the sea and air temperatures are a bit warmer.

Overall, April is a good time to visit Okinawa, just be prepared for a little bit of rain and remember to always check the weather before your trip.

PROS | all beaches are open, shoulder season so cheaper

CONS | still chilly

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN MAY

MIN TEMPERATURE |  19C (66F)

We visited Okinawa during the month of May and therefore have some personal tips to share with you about this month.

Firstly, be aware that May brings some changes to the island’s weather, including warmer temperatures and the start of the wet season. So if you want to avoid the sweltering heat of the summer months, May is the best time to visit according to the locals.

Although May marks the beginning of the rainy season, it doesn’t mean you’ll be drenched every day. In fact, during our visit, we only experienced some light sprinkles. The average temperature may suggest that May is similar to April, but don’t be fooled. May brings temperatures close to the upper 20s and low 30s, which is perfect if you want to soak up the sun without feeling like you’re melting.

It is however also in this month that Japan ‘s Golden Week takes place. So, if you’re planning on visiting in this time period (usually the first week of May) expect high prices and big crowds.

One of the best things about visiting Okinawa in May is that all the beaches are open, and you can even hop on a ferry to explore other islands like Miyako-Jima, Ishigaki-jima Island, and Ie Island. Just be sure to check the weather forecast before booking any island-hopping adventures.

So, whether you’re looking for some fun in the sun or an island adventure, May is a great month to visit Okinawa.

PROS | all beaches are open, warmer weather

CONS | crowded Golden week and higher chance of rain

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN JUNE

MAX TEMPERATURE | 24C (75F)

MIN TEMPERATURE | 20C (68F)

If you visit Okinawa in June, you could encounter a little bit more rain and undoubtedly higher temperatures, but don’t let that stop you! Even though it was the rainy season when our friends visited Okinawa in late June, they were surprised to discover that the weather was mostly sunny for the entire month. They were certainly lucky because the weather on this tropical island is sometimes unpredictable.

With perfect weather, June is a terrific month for outdoor pursuits including hiking through a national park, snorkelling or diving around the coral reefs, and island hopping. Be ready, though, for excessive humidity and temps in the 80s. Also, keep in mind that June is a busy month for travel in Okinawa, with many Japanese people visiting the island for their summer vacation. As a result, anticipate seeing more people at attractions during this time.

PROS | great weather for outdoor activities

CONS |rainy season and can be a bit crowded

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN JULY

MAX TEMPERATURE | 29C (84F)

MIN TEMPERATURE | 24C (75F)

If you’re someone who loves the feeling of walking around in a humid and warm environment, then Okinawa in July is perfect for you!

However, if you prefer a cooler environment, then it’s best to avoid this month altogether. We personally do not like the feeling of walking into a sauna every time we step outside.

Not to mention, the number of tourists in July makes it a busy month, so popular spots will be packed.

Additionally, as July is in the midst of typhoon season, there is a higher possibility of experiencing one. However, this isn’t a guarantee, so if you’re planning to visit during this time, it’s best to check the weather forecast frequently.

Note that if a typhoon does occur, most buildings in Okinawa are designed to withstand it, and rainy weather usually lasts for only a few days before the sun comes back out.

So, although July isn’t the most ideal month for a visit, it’s still doable if you don’t mind the intense humidity and want to experience tropical weather.

PROS | warm weather

CONS | risk of typhoons and generally very humid

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN AUGUST

MAX TEMPERATURE | 32C (89F)

MIN TEMPERATURE | 27C (80F)

When it comes to August in Okinawa, be prepared for some seriously hot weather. So, pack light and airy apparel because the temperature will rise into the high 20s or perhaps even the 30s.  It’s also important to stay hydrated and take breaks in air-conditioned areas to avoid heat exhaustion or dehydration.

This month is hot and humid. Coming from the United Kingdom, this is personally not a climate we deal with very well. It is also one of the months when typhoons are most likely to strike the region. Don’t worry though, if a typhoon does strike, the islands should be fairly safe.

We would therefore suggest that August is not an ideal time to visit Okinawa.

To have the best conditions for travelling without being concerned about typhoons, aim to book your vacation in June, July, or even May if possible. During those months, you’ll experience more pleasant weather as well as a lower chance of having your plans thwarted.

CONS |hottest month of the year, very humid and typhoon season

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN SEPTEMBER

Because September falls in the shoulder season, we typically like travelling to  Japan during this month.

It’s essential to keep in mind that the two months—September and August—are pretty comparable when it comes to the weather. Typhoons are likely, and both months are hot and muggy.

One significant distinction however is that September often has less tourists, which gives you a little more room to maneuver when you go sightseeing. But, it’s important to keep in mind that if a typhoon strikes, your plans can be derailed, so make sure to buy travel insurance in advance.

Generally, if you want to avoid a typhoon, September is not the greatest month to travel to Okinawa.

If you do decide to travel to Okinawa during this month, you should be prepared for somea certain amount of rain, but not enough to keep you trapped indoors too long.

We would suggest that September is an acceptable but undoubtedly mediocre time to travel to Okinawa.

PROS | warm weather, fewer crowds

CONS | typhoon season

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN OCTOBER

MIN TEMPERATURE | 25C (77F)

If you’re planning a trip to Okinawa, October is definitely worth considering. It’s the ideal time to avoid the crowds and take advantage of cheaper prices.

As the month progresses, the weather gets milder, making it a comfortable time to explore the island.

Plus, you won’t have to worry about being hit by a typhoon since the season is on its way out. Although some typhoons have hit Okinawa in October in the past, they’re rare. But if you’re really concerned about typhoons, it might be a good idea to plan your trip for the latter half of October when the likelihood of a typhoon drops lower. Do keep in mind though that tropical weather is unpredictable, so stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts.

One of the biggest events in Okinawa, the world’s largest tug-of-war, takes place in October. This is an event you won’t want to miss!

Overall, October is an excellent time to visit Okinawa if you want to avoid the fall weather, save money, and enjoy the island without the crowds.

PROS | warm weather, less crowded and end of the typhoon season

CONS | although typhoon season is on it’s way out it’s not ended yet

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN NOVEMBER

MIN TEMPERATURE | 13C (55F)

You are less likely to get a deal for your trip to Okinawa in November, but it’s still an awesome month to travel to the island.

The temperature drops significantly compared to the summer months and the typhoon season is officially over, so you don’t have to worry about any weather-related disruptions. This also means that the oppressive humidity is long gone, making it perfect for exploring Naha on the main island by foot.

For the best weather, it’s recommended to visit at the beginning of the month, as the temperature tends to cool down significantly by the end of November.

Moreover, ferries to other islands are still running during this month, so you can still plan some island hopping before winter sets in.

All in all, November is considered one of the best times to visit Okinawa, alongside May. So if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed vacation, this month might be the perfect time for you to go.

PROS | fewer crowds and official end of typhoon season

CONS | cooler weather

OKINAWA’S WEATHER IN DECEMBER

MAX TEMPERATURE | 21C (69F)

As the year winds down and December arrives in Okinawa, the temperature drops enough to make taking a dip in the ocean unappealing. So if you had your heart set on island hopping and snorkelling, this may not be the month for you.

Fortunately, with fewer crowds due to the cooler weather, December is a budget-friendly time to visit. However, keep in mind that most of the island’s highlights require warmer weather to be fully enjoyed, so plan accordingly.

While this may be considered the islanders’ “winter,” don’t expect temperatures to dip below 55-60 F, making it a great escape from the mainland snow.

Personally though, we don’t think December is the best time to visit due to the cold weather. If you can, try to schedule your trip for the spring or fall months instead.

PROS | cheap prices and fewer crowds

CONS | cooler temperatures

WHAT TO PACK FOR EACH SEASON IN OKINAWA

To have a comfortable and happy trip, it is important to plan what to you will wear in Okinawa no matter what season you are visiting.

We saw the value of carrying appropriate attire for the climate first-hand when we went to Okinawa for our honeymoon in May.

Here are some tips for what to wear in each season in Okinawa:

WHAT TO WEAR IN OKINAWA IN SUMMER (JUNE TO AUGUST)

Okinawa experiences hot, muggy summers with temperatures between 28°C and 32°C (82°F and 90°F). Packing lightweight, breathable clothing is crucial. Cotton or linen shirts, shorts, and skirts are all great.

To shield your skin from the harsh heat, don’t forget to take a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

To navigate the streets of a city or a stroll down the beach, wear comfortable sandals or casual shoes.

Additionally, we would advise you to take a small umbrella or raincoat because it is rainy season.

WHAT TO WEAR IN OKINAWA IN FALL (SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER)

The weather starts to cool off and the humidity drops in the fall, making it a fantastic time to travel to Okinawa. 23°C to 29°C (73°F to 84°F) is the range you may anticipate.

We recommend that you pack light clothing for the daytime, but you should definitely bring a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings.  Additionally, a light scarf or shawl may also come in handy.

To see all the attractions Okinawa has to offer , you must have a comfortable pair of sneakers or walking shoes .

WHAT TO WEAR IN OKINAWA IN WINTER (DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY)

Temperatures in Okinawa during the winter are mild and range from 15°C to 21°C (59°F to 70°F).

A warm jacket or coat, as well as long-sleeved shirts or sweaters, are what we would advise you to bring.

For those cooler evenings, you should also bring a scarf and gloves.

Because temperatures can fluctuate, it’s still a sensible move to pack some lighter clothing for the daytime.

Comfortable boots or walking shoes are a must-have for trekking or city exploration.

WHAT TO WEAR IN OKINAWA IN SPRING (MARCH TO MAY)

As the weather begins to warm up and the island begins to bloom with cherry blossoms, spring is another fantastic season to visit Okinawa. The range of temperatures is 19°C to 25°C (66°F to 77°F).

Pack shirts, shorts, and skirts made of cotton or linen if you want to stay cool and comfortable.

For those chillier evenings, it is wise to include a lightweight scarf or shawl in addition to a light jacket or sweater in your luggage.

Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are essential to explore the city or hiking.

IN CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Okinawa is a perfect destination for those who want to experience Japanese culture and enjoy beautiful beaches.

After our honeymoon trip in May, we recommend visiting Okinawa during the spring or autumn, when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are thinner.

However, if you’re looking for warm weather and water activities , the summer months can also be a great time to visit.

For budget travellers, the low season from December to February can offer significant savings.

We also recommend checking out some of the local festivals and events, which can provide a unique and culturally enriching experience.

Overall, Okinawa has so much to offer, and we encourage anyone considering a trip to this beautiful island to go for it!

The Best, Worst, and Most Affordable Times to Visit Japan

Whether you want to see the cherry blossoms or avoid the crowds, these are the best times to visit Japan.

A snowy getaway in Hokkaido, a beach vacation in Okinawa, or a photography trip to capture cherry blossoms in Tokyo — the best time to visit Japan depends entirely on what you want to do when you arrive.

As a country with a seemingly endless amount of activities and festivals on offer throughout the year, there really isn't a bad time to visit. But if you're interested in shrine-hopping in Kyoto, seeing the pink hues of cherry blossoms, or gazing at fall foliage, you'll want to carefully time your visit. Here are the tourist seasons to be aware of when planning your trip.

  • High Season: March to May and September to November
  • Shoulder Seasons:  June to August and December
  • Low Season:  January to March

Use this guide to find the perfect time for your dream trip to Japan.

Best Times to Visit Japan for Smaller Crowds

Travelers from all over the world come to Japan to admire the cherry blossoms, so it should come as no surprise that sakura season (late March to April) marks the busiest time for tourism. Domestic travelers also take advantage of Golden Week (a series of four national holidays in Japan) from the end of April to the beginning of May. You'll want to avoid visiting during that time, unless you meticulously plan ahead, since trains, hotels, and sightseeing spots can often be overcrowded or booked out entirely. Stunning foliage tends to draw crowds in the autumn, especially when the leaves reach their colorful peak between mid-October and early November.

If you're looking to avoid the crowds, plan your visit during the rainy season, which typically begins in June and lasts until mid-July. Though this period tends to be humid and drizzly, it's one of the best times to enjoy the popular tourist spots without the crowds. Japan is also quieter between January and March, making it a perfect time to pair sightseeing with snow sports and onsen visits.

Best Times to Visit Japan for Good Weather

Japan, while not especially large, is surprisingly varied when it comes to weather. Frigid winters at the northernmost tip of Hokkaido make the subtropical islands of southern Okinawa seem worlds away. The rainy season typically runs from early June to mid-July throughout most of the country — Tokyo included — except in Okinawa where showers begin in early May. Meanwhile, in Hokkaido, summertime brings mild temperatures and blue skies.

If you aren't hitting the ski slopes, March to May and September to November are generally considered the best times to visit the country for pleasant weather. That's when travelers can find the iconic cherry blossoms that seem straight out of a postcard, or, on the other hand, vivid autumnal leaves. During these seasons, rainfall is minimal, skies are clear, and temperatures are mild, ranging from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit most days.

For those not averse to heat and humidity, summer brings a different tempo to Japan. It's a time of year perfect for exploring nature — ideally, somewhere cool up a mountain or as far north as possible. The lusciously cooler climes of Hokkaido are heaven in the summer, with rainbow-bright flower fields and countless outdoor activities, from hiking to horseback riding.

In the winter, the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is undeniably the best place to ski or snowboard, but areas outside of Tokyo, such as Niigata, are only a Shinkansen ride away and boast great alpine resorts. Those who prefer the warmth would do best to fly south to Okinawa during the winter for a more subtropical climate.

Best Times to Visit Japan for Lower Prices

Japan has a reputation for being a pricey destination, but there are times of year when it's less expensive to visit. During the low season, between January and March, you may be able to find deals on airfare and hotel rooms. Prices tend to spike during the holiday season, especially around the New Year, so it's best to avoid the beginning of January if you're trying to save money.

Costs rise again in late March and April for the peak cherry blossom season and remain high throughout the spring and summer. For your best bet of scoring reasonably priced accommodations while also enjoying mild weather, aim to visit in September or October.

Best Times to Visit Tokyo Disneyland

Spring and autumn are generally the best, most temperate times of year to visit Tokyo Disneyland. It's worth avoiding weekends and national holidays — particularly Golden Week, which is one of the busiest periods at the theme park. The extreme heat in July and August can make it difficult to enjoy outdoor attractions. On the other hand, the temperatures rarely exceed 50 degrees in January and February, making those months less popular.

The period from mid-September through the beginning of December offers a combination of pleasant weather, thinner crowds, and seasonal entertainment. Spooky decorations and fall-themed events can be enjoyed in the weeks leading up to Halloween. Starting in November, the theme park celebrates the holiday season with its Christmas at Tokyo Disney Resort programming, which includes magical parades, characters in festive costumes, and heart-warming decorations that help offset the chill in the air.

Best Time to Visit Japan for Cherry Blossoms

If you're hoping to time your visit to Japan with the peak cherry blossom season, bear in mind that the bloom dates vary depending on the weather. The cherry blossom front — meticulously studied and broadcasted across the country — edges its way up, starting at the southernmost tip of Japan as early as January. The best times for cherry blossoms in Kyoto, Tokyo, and the surrounding regions are often from the last week of March to the first week of April. And for more northerly cities such as Sapporo? Don't expect to see any pink at least until May.

Best Times to Visit Japan for Food Lovers

Japan is a great destination for food lovers year-round — but it's also seasonal. So, if you have a favorite Japanese cuisine or ingredient, it's worth finding out when to visit to avoid missing out completely. Summertime treats include light, cool sōmen noodles, kakigōri shaved ice, and delicious unagi (eel); autumn is heaven for matsutake mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and sanma (Pacific saury); winter is all about warming nabe hot pots, citrus fruits, and kaki (persimmon); and spring goes hand in hand with sea bream, takenoko (bamboo shoots), and sakura mochi rice cakes.

Worst Times to Visit Japan

While there's no bad time to visit Japan, some months are worse than others, depending on your goals. If pleasant weather is a priority, avoid the rainy season, which typically runs from early June to mid-July throughout Japan (except in Okinawa, where it begins in May). This period is often preceded by extreme heat and humidity, with cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto being especially unbearable during the peak summer months of July and August.

Those looking to save money and avoid crowds should steer clear of Golden Week, which runs from the end of April to the beginning of May. This is when many domestic travelers take their holidays, so expect higher prices, less availability at hotels, and larger crowds.

Best (and Worst) Time to Visit Japan 2024, Cherry Blossom Time

Japan is a year-round popular destination with four distinct seasons. Each season offers a variety of charming scenery and culture-rich events for you to enjoy.

The best times to visit Japan are in spring (March to May) for cherry blossoms and in autumn (September to November) for colorful foliage. Both periods have pleasant weather.

Summer (June to August) is the rainny season in Japan. It is hot and humid, with an average high temperature of about 31°C (88°F), which can feel like 41°C (106°F). It is considered to be the worst time to visit Japan, but it doesn't rain every day so it doesn't really hinder travel.

Plenty of indoor activities, such as ninja experiences and sushi-making, also minimize the impact of rainfall and humid heat. Additionally, July and August are the festival seasons in Japan, making it a good time for families with kids to immerse themselves in authentic Japanese traditions.

June is a better time to travel for families compared to July and August, as it offers slightly cooler weather and fewer crowds (the official summer vacation in Japan begins in July).

Just contact us if you are thinking of a trip to Japan. We'd like to create a wonderful trip based on your needs and interests, whatever the weather.

Best Time for Cherry Blossoms in Japan

  • March to April: 10–18°C (50–64°F)

Cherry blossoms in spring (March to May) are Japan's most beautiful scenery, and you can admire them almost everywhere in Japan. They usually reach full bloom from late March to early April (March 24th to April 2nd), making the spring or Easter vacation the perfect time to travel to Japan.

If you want to avoid the large crowds and enjoy slightly lower prices in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka , the week before full bloom (around March 16th to 23rd) is your best time. Except for some trees where the cherry blossoms have not yet fully opened, the scenery during this time is almost as stunning as it is when the blossoms are in full bloom.

If you want to appreciate the cherry blossoms in April to early May with fewer crowds and lower costs , Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan, is an excellent destination for you. It is also the perfect place to experience Japanese indigenous culture. The best time to view cherry blossoms in Sapporo is in mid to late April (around April 15th to 20th).

Hotels around popular attractions are always booked up quickly, contact us at least 3 months in advance to have the best chance of room availability and choice.

1) May is the transitional month from spring to summer in Japan. It's warmer and has clear days, with an average temperature of 15–23°C (58–73°F). It is advisable to avoid Japan's "Golden Week" public holiday from April 29th to May 5th. After May 7th, it is a perfect time to travel as the crowds and travel costs decrease.

2) September and October are cooler months in Japan , the average temperature range from 18-25°C (64-77°F). While there are about ten rainy days in September, there are very few visitors during this time. In October, the number of sunny days increases, and it is also when the maple leaves start turning red, creating beautiful autumn scenery.

January and February: Cold and Dry

  • Average temperature: 2–10℃ (36–50°F)
  • Average rainfall: 70 mm (3 in)

January and February in Japan have cold weather with more clear days, but it is not too cold to travel. Top experiences in Japan in winter include soaking in hot springs, watching snow monkeys bathing in onsen hot springs, appreciating gassho-zukuri farmhouses (their steep thatched roofs named after 'praying hands' are extremely charming when covered in snow and illuminated during winter nights), and skiing in Hokkaido.

Festivals and events: New Year is the most important festival in Japan in January. You could experience a bell-ringing ceremony at a shrine to pray for luck in the coming year in a traditional Japanese way.

March and April: Best of Cherry Blossoms

  • Average temperature: 7–19℃ (45–66°F)
  • Average rainfall: 110 mm (4 in)

March and April, the cherry blossom season, is one of the best times to travel to Japan, thanks to the comfortable weather, clear days, and the most attractive scenery.

The cherry blossoms are generally in full bloom from late March to early April. Imagine wearing a kimono to take pictures or having a picnic under the cherry trees with your family/partner and watching the petals flutter in the breeze. It would definitely make some memorable moments.

Festivals and events in March and April: Hanami is a traditional term for viewing cherry blossoms, and it is the most popular activity in spring in Japan. Many traditional ryokans and excellent guides are also fully booked in advance, so we recommend you make your decision at least 3 months in advance. Our Japan expert would customized the trip based on your group size, budget, and requirements.

May: Warm and Sunny

  • Average temperature: 15–23℃ (59–73°F)
  • Average rainfall: 140 mm (6 in)

May is warmer and the skies are clear. The Golden Week (typically from April 29th to May 5th) is a public holiday in Japan and many Japanese choose to travel during this time. The crowds and costs tend to decrease after May 10th, making it a perfect time to visit Japan.

June: Coolest Summer Month

  • Average temperature: 19–26℃ (66–79°F)
  • Average rainfall: 178 mm (7 in)

June is the start of summer and the plum rain season. Rainfall is sometimes in the form of a steady drizzle, and it doesn't rain every day. It's suitable to wear both long sleeves and short sleeves to cater to the varying weather conditions.

June is a better month to spend your summer vacation, especially for families with school-age children. You could enjoy cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and favorable prices compared to July and August.

July and August: Best Time for Festivals and Fireworks Celebrations

  • Average temperature: 24–31℃ (75–88°F)
  • Average rainfall: 163 mm (6 in)

July and August are hot and humid in Japan. Japan offers abundant indoor activities inside air-conditioned buildings , such as ninja experiences, pottery making, and Pokémon Center fun. This helps to minimize worries about the heat and rain. Additionally, taking a private tour in a private air-conditioned car could help to minimize the inconvenience caused by rainfall.

Festivals and events in July and August: Both months host culture-rich festival celebrations and grand fireworks celebrations, such as the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival in Tokyo, the Gion Festival in Kyoto, and Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka. These lively and amazing celebrations allow you and your kids to experience authentic float parades, enjoy the colorful fireworks in the cool summer breeze, and feel the cultural atmosphere deeply.

September and October: Cooler Weather with Fewer Crowds

  • Average temperature: 17–24℃ (63–75°F)
  • Average rainfall: 164 mm (6 in)

The weather becomes cooler in September and October, and typhoons sometimes hit Japan, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, especially in September. It does not rain every day (about 10 days a month) and it tends to be drier in October.

It's the low season to travel to Japan so you could expect fewer crowds and cheaper costs. If you are traveling in September, it is important to keep your itinerary flexible in case of flight delays or cancellations.

November: Best Time to Visit for Colorful Autumn Foliage

  • Average temperature: 9–17℃ (48–63°F)
  • Average rainfall: 86 mm (3 in)

November in Japan is one of the best times to travel due to the pleasant weather and many dry days. During this month, the whole country explodes with colors. You could appreciate red, orange, and golden autumn foliage scenery throughout Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and other parts of Japan.

December: Perfect for Soaking in Hot Springs and Celebrating Christmas

  • Average temperature: 5–11℃ (41–52°F)
  • Average rainfall: 65 mm (3 in)

Japan in December is not too cold. It's the best time for you to experience unique winter activities , such as soaking in the hot springs to enjoy the snow scenery, watching the snow monkeys bathe in their own "onsen" (hot spring bath), and appreciating the gassho-zukuri farmhouses' lighting at night.

Festivals and events in December: Japan is an excellent destination for families to celebrate Christmas in. Eye-catching Christmas illuminations and a fancy Christmas feast would help to make a Japan vacation a great experience for you and your family.

Worst Time To Visit Okinawa [Never Visit in THIS TIME]

Are you planning a trip to Okinawa, Japan

There are many factors to consider when planning a trip, but one of the most important is the time of year.

The best time to visit Okinawa is during the spring and fall months, when the weather is mild and there are fewer tourists.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable trip, you may want to consider visiting during the winter months, when the weather is cooler and there are fewer tourists.

Of course, there are pros and cons to visiting Okinawa at any time of year.

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at the best and worst times to visit Okinawa, so you can make the most of your trip.

So What is The Worst Time To Visit Okinawa

The worst time to visit Okinawa is during the summer months of July and August, when the weather is hot and humid. The average temperature during this time is around 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with highs of 90 degrees Fahrenheit or more. The humidity can also be oppressive, making it difficult to do anything outside for extended periods of time. Additionally, the summer months are the peak tourist season in Okinawa, so prices for hotels and other accommodations are higher than usual.

The Best And Worst Time To Visit Okinawa

The best time to visit Okinawa is from April to June and from September to November. The weather is warm and sunny, with mild rain showers. The worst time to visit is from July to August, when it is hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms.

Worst Time to Visit Okinawa

Summer is the peak tourist season in Okinawa, and for good reason. The weather is warm and sunny, the beaches are crowded, and there are plenty of festivals and events to enjoy. However, it’s also the most expensive time to visit, and the crowds can be overwhelming. If you’re not a fan of heat and humidity, summer is probably not the best time for you to visit Okinawa.

Winter in Okinawa is mild and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, and the crowds are much smaller than they are in summer. However, it’s also the rainy season, so you’re more likely to experience rain or typhoons.

Spring in Okinawa is a beautiful time of year. The weather is warm and sunny, the flowers are blooming, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. It’s a great time to visit if you’re looking for a more peaceful and relaxing experience. However, it’s also the start of the tourist season, so the crowds are starting to pick up.

Fall in Okinawa is another great time to visit. The weather is still warm and sunny, but the crowds have started to thin out. It’s a great time to enjoy the beaches, the hiking trails, and the local cuisine.

The best time to visit Okinawa depends on your personal preferences. If you’re looking for warm weather and plenty of activities, summer is the best time to go. If you’re looking for mild weather and smaller crowds, spring or fall is a better option. And if you’re looking for a truly unique experience, winter is the time to visit Okinawa.

worst time to visit okinawa

I see there is an 80% chance of rain on Tuesday and 70% chance on Wednesday in Tokyo- our first two days in the country. We have proper attire and can buy an umbrella, so no problem if it’s just some rain. But will it be more like a big storm with heavy winds as well? Hard to be certain of course, but any experience with typhoon with weather in Japan would be useful to know.

It might be bettter to do museums or shopping on Tuesday. Many Ginza stores are connected at the basement to the subway station so you can enjoy many without going out.

The weather depends how much humid air stimilates the rain front so checking the forecast frequentlhy is the only thing you can do.

The storm track has the system well to the east of Japan later this week (Friday 31st), so it will be a question of how much rain it pushes onto the country when it gets into the general vicinity as it is still way down in the Philippines. Given how far offshore it is predicted to be, and how weak it is anyway, I doubt there will be much in the way of wind.

The rain today and tomorrow is a separate event.

I don't think you'll be affected much at all by the typhoon, Brian.

As said, the rain tomorrow and Tuesday is a different thing. Most full-service hotels have umbrellas for the guests. No need to buy one.

worst time to visit okinawa

Bring waterproof shoes, ie lightweight hiking/walking shoes. Wet socks, feet and shoes are never fun.

The rain on Tuesday and Wednesday is the low pressure front, not directly related to the typhoon. It looks like No. 1 is going to veer off to the right as it picks up speed. Should be sunny-ish on Thursday. But we're going into the rainy season, so the days could be cloudy/rain combo.

https://traininfo.jr-central.co.jp/shinkansen/pc/en/index.html

According to that, Shinkansen will be delayed if the rainfall exceeds 60mm per hour or if it rains heavily for a long period of time.

Even as a local, it is difficult to decide an itinerary when a typhoon is coming. Foreign tourists would be in more trouble. I'm also going to go to Nara from Tokyo during the 31st May to 2nd June too see Kitora Tumulus Mural Paintings and cycling in Asuka village.

This is all very helpful. Thanks everyone!

As we are traveling Tokyo to Kyoto on Friday, has anyone seen a local report with more details on the storm Friday? Advice if it’s best to head out early in the morning or wait until mid-day and see if the storm is further north?

Rain front currently stays between typhoon and Honshu. Today weather forecast says the typhoon will push the rain front to the north and it will rain more in Kanto and Tokai region on May 31.

Israel nears decision on Lebanon border offensive, army chief says

BEIRUT (Reuters) — Israel is ready for an offensive along the northern border with Lebanon and is nearing a decision, the chief of staff said on Tuesday, as the Hezbollah movement said it was not seeking to widen the conflict but was ready to fight any war imposed on it.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which has been fought in parallel to the Gaza war, has intensified in recent days, adding to concerns that an even wider confrontation could break out between the heavily armed adversaries.

Israeli Military Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were ready to move to an offensive in the north.

“We are prepared after a very good process of training up to the level of a General Staff exercise to move to an offensive in the north,” he said in a recorded statement. “We are approaching a decision point.”

The hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have been their worst since they waged war in 2006, and tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border have been forced to flee their homes.

Hezbollah, an ally of Palestinian militant group Hamas, says it has been striking Israel in support of Palestinians under Israeli bombardment in Gaza. It has previously said it will cease fire when the Israeli offensive on Gaza stops.

Hezbollah deputy leader Sheikh Naim Qassem told broadcaster Al Jazeera that the group’s decision was not to widen the war but that it would fight one if it was imposed on it. Qassem said the Lebanon front would not stop until the Gaza war stops, Al Jazeera quoted him as saying.

Israel has gone to war numerous times in Lebanon.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Washington does “not support a full war with Hezbollah” but Israel had the right to defend itself from Hezbollah attacks.

“We’ve heard Israeli leaders say the solution that they prefer is a diplomatic solution. And obviously that is the solution that we prefer too and that we’re trying to pursue,” he said.

The United States views Iran-backed Hezbollah as a terrorist group.

The European Union said it was “increasingly concerned” about rising tensions and forced displacement of civilians on both sides of the Israeli-Lebanese border and called for restraint from all sides.

“Nobody stands to win from a broader regional conflict,” the EU said in a statement. “A de-escalation of the situation would significantly contribute to the settlement of the broader conflict in the Middle East.”

Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer said the fighting in the area was “not a sustainable reality”, adding that Israel was committed to ensuring the return home of tens of thousands of Israelis evacuated from the north.

“It is up to Hezbollah to decide if this can be accomplished by diplomatic means or by force,” he said. “We are defending this country and no one should be surprised by our response.”

Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden at the heart of diplomatic efforts seeking de-escalation, said last week a land border agreement between Israel and Lebanon implemented in phases could dampen the conflict.

‘WE MUST... DESTROY THEM’

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir urged more military action.

“There cannot be peace in Lebanon while our land is hit and people here are evacuated,” Ben-Gvir said following a tour in the northern city of Kiryat Shmona in a video statement shared on X. “They’re setting fires here, we must burn all of Hezbollah’s strongholds, destroy them. War!”

Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are members of Israel’s security cabinet but not of the war cabinet.

The violence, which has oscillated for months, escalated in recent days. Hezbollah announced on Tuesday it had launched a squadron of one-way attack drones at an Israeli military barracks for a second consecutive day, calling it a response to a deadly Israeli attack in Naqoura, Lebanon.

Sirens sounded in northern Israel, where rockets fired from Lebanon set off wildfires on Monday.

The Israeli military said a “suspicious aerial target” that crossed from Lebanon fell in the Mount Hermon area, with no injuries reported.

Israeli warplanes struck a member of Hezbollah in Naqoura, as well as two other locations in southern Lebanon. Israeli artillery struck five locations in the south, the Israeli military said.

Israeli strikes have killed about 300 members of Hezbollah since Oct. 7 and around 80 civilians, according to Reuters tallies of deaths announced by the group and medical and security sources. Attacks from Lebanon on Israel have killed 18 Israeli soldiers and 10 civilians, the Israeli military says.

On Monday, Hezbollah said it launched a squadron of drones against an Israeli target in response to Israel’s killing of a Hezbollah member. While Hezbollah has used drones in the conflict, it marked the first time it had declared launching a squadron of them.

Maya Gebeily reported from Beirut. Dan Williams and Henriette Chacar reported from Jerusalem. Additional reporting by Laila Bassam.
