Inside Zach King's Illusion Prop Studio

Released on 08/25/2020

Hey, Vanity Fair, I'm Zach King.

And over the years, I've gotten to amass fun collection

of props that I've used in my magic videos.

Like this one, the giant toy car.

So I'll take you in the studio, show you around.

[whooshing] [upbeat music]

[whooshing] All right.

So this is my office and this is where I not only work,

but also keep some of my favorite things

throughout my childhood and little things that have

inspired me, as well as memorabilia from my videos.

Like this one, the souvenir of France.

It's a Vine video where I grab it and take the Eiffel tower.

Merci beaucoup.

The fun part about working with miniatures to me

is it's really tactile.

It's something you can grab, you can play with,

you could block in the frame,

but it also means you have to get it 100% perfect.

So that means your distance from this to the camera,

but also the item in the background has to be perfect.

So you're lining up these three different elements

and it's fun, but it takes a ton of time to get it perfect.

If it's not perfect, you know,

you gotta fly back to France and re-shoot.

One of my favorite videos that I've done on TikTok

was based on one of my favorite books growing up,

Harry Potter.

Of course, everyone wants to be able to fly on a broomstick.

So we created this illusion where,

with a mirror and the broomstick and pants glued to it,

it looked like I could be floating.

[gentle music]

You know, there's always challenges when we're filming.

The hardest one on that video is we were riding

and we'd chipped the mirror a little bit

or the Boosted board like,

dance between the cameraman and myself in the videos

is always an intense choreography, and that one especially,

because I'm on an electric skateboard

and I have to control that as well as hold this rig

of the mirror and the broomstick and the pants,

which is actually rather heavy, with one hand.

It's fun though, when you get that choreography down,

it feels like you just had an amazing dance,

and you know, the video turned out awesome, I love it.

I also love exploring ideas that kind of bend reality.

And a good example of that is this chair,

which I keep in my office.

It looks like a regular chair, right?

But if I sit down, it's not quite a regular chair,

it's actually what we call an illusion chair.

So it's based on the perspective of where the camera is.

It's actually, as you can see,

a bunch of curved cut wood perfectly to line up

just from one single angle over there.

So there's a lot of meticulous work that goes up front

in designing these illusions, from sketches, design,

3D blueprints, and CAD models.

And that's only half of it.

Then we take that into reality.

When you're talking about making a piece of furniture

or a set, you actually have to just line up the camera,

and have it there during the entire construction process.

And it's a bummer because a lot of times

you end up building it and if you didn't

line up the camera right, you have to redo it.

So you gotta be detail-oriented.

So this next room that we're gonna be going to is

one of my favorites in the studio.

It stores some really fun treats.

Let's go check it out.

[whooshing] Okay.

So this is special room because this is

where we store our medium to large props.

Now, we store the extra small props in a special other room,

which I'll show you in a second.

So what you see in here is pretty much all the props

I've used over the years ranging from snack items,

like this giant Oreo here.

We've got this little miniature plane.

I was thinking about the name of the Wright brothers,

you know, who were some of the first inventors of flight.

And I was like, wouldn't be funny if there was like,

what if there was a wrong brother,

like what was his invention have been like,

and he would take a miniature, wind it up, throw it.

And then the plane would circle back and it'd become real.

And it would almost crash into him.

That's where that idea came from.

So I got this prop online the night before we had the shoot.

It arrived and I thought it came assembled,

like ready to go out of the box.

But no, I had to build this, it actually took me hours.

And look, there's even a complicated rubber band system

to how they make these spin and turn on.

I spent way too much time Super Gluing

and burning my fingers making this.

But you know, that actually happens a lot.

I always try to look in the fine print

when I'm buying props online now, it's like, is it prebuilt?

That is absolutely key if possible.

Now a lot of the props that we make here are actually made

in-house using design and 3D printers like this one.

So I wanted do a video where I was

playing catch with myself.

I would throw it this way and then catch it

close up to frame with this small little football.

And you can see, this one is actually just a perfectly

printed replica and we'll paint it brown.

It's all hand-painted with the little Wilson logo there.

But it's fun that we can make things really accurate to size

and just to the size that we need

so it's at the right distance from camera.

You know, my videos tap into a lot of different themes

and one of 'em tends to be games and sports.

So I've got things that are golf clubs.

I've got little mini bikes.

I've even got, this is a special one,

because I did a video with Tony Hawk

where I was skateboarding, showing him a skateboard trick.

And during the trick it transitions

to this little miniature.

And he actually signed this one for us, so that's cool.

Some props are a mix of 3D-printed as a base,

and then covered with fabric,

like this one that was used in a safety video commercial

we got to do for an airline.

And this is actually, really amazing craftsmanship.

All real zippers done.

And in terms of the 3D printing,

like things like this, my team will do that.

They'll design it in 3D software like in CAD,

and then we'll 3D print it.

And we'll usually do several different sizes

so that when we show up on set,

we don't know exactly where the position's gonna be,

based on it could be a different camera.

It could be a different lens that we're using that day.

So it's crazy amount of work,

but we make three or four different versions

just to scale the size.

This one was a completely custom design

where it's a little penguin.

We needed to do an illusion which was

having the audience guess which belly color

of the penguin is darker.

And so we printed a series of these to show off

just little tricks that your mind and your eyes play on you,

even though it's not reality.

When we're designing these tricks that actually play off

of real life principles, such as color illusions,

where it has to trick your mind,

those take a lot of time 'cause we actually have to have

all of our team and our friends go through these surveys

and seeing what really works,

and what's the science behind it.

And again, if that doesn't work for somebody out of the 99,

and there's one person that doesn't work for,

we still try to engineer it so every single person

that sees it can have the same effect.

So things like color illusions are difficult to create.

I think a lot of people, if they were to come here,

they'd be like,

You love these miniatures and dollhouses stuff.

And it kind of looks like that because we have

a miniature house set that we just used in a recent video.

And it's got a mailbox, and what we did is, in the video,

I walk up and I ended up realizing I'm really large.

And you see that this was scaled down,

but it was like a forced perspective trick.

And I come down and grab the mail.

But then the twist on it was when I turn around to go

inside the house, the house was miniature.

That video took us literally months to concept and block.

We'd go out to the park for an afternoon,

figure out what was wrong, come back.

And I think we did that several times.

And finally, we went out and shot it.

And we just had a bunch of teenagers

standing out there eyeballing us, looking,

giving us the strangest looks.

It sounds so ridiculous but the reason this video took

months and months to do and multiple attempts is

because we actually just needed

the certain level of grading on the field.

We needed a field that went down

just like an inch every two feet.

And we actually spent a lot of time,

our team, looking for that field.

And so we found a field, finally made it happen.

But yeah, the smallest little variables in our videos

make a big difference, such as the grade of the field.

People chalk up a lot of our videos to CG and it's,

Oh, it's a CG house that they replaced,

but no, it's actually real, it has real windows and doors.

And that gives it a tactile feel.

That's the reason I got into filmmaking is because

everything was real.

I'd watch Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones

and you knew those tanks were real,

and you knew the dinosaurs,

they have real creatures that they were

interacting with.

And that's why I love film because you can feel it on set.

You're not walking onto to a green screen room,

and just pretending.

This is a special deck of cards because,

I made this video with my kids where it looked like we were

creating a house of cards in the foreground,

but then one of my sons walks around

in the background and knocks it over.

We came up with this concept pretty last minute.

So I just told one of my producers,

Hey, we gotta spray paint the symbols.

And what we do is we'll lay out these poster boards

and then project the image,

and then we'll trace it with paint

and create stencils and then spray paint it.

It's always fun to have large items.

[cards crashing] That's a house of cards for ya.

Sometimes I'm surfing the internet

and I'll just see this giant thing.

And I'll be like, I don't know what that's for,

but I'm gonna buy it.

And so we bought this giant beach ball.

So far, no ideas have come to mind yet, but I think,

I think something cool will come out of that.

That also goes for things like this giant watch.

I mean, obviously you need to tell time,

but do you really need a watch this big?

I don't know what this is for.

That's the beauty of ideas, for me,

I do just randomly buy things online if it feels

like I could get some future inspiration from that.

That's why there's such an eclectic range of items

still here that we haven't shot with.

So out of all the rooms in the studio,

this room is by far my favorite.

I've actually only been inside once

'cause it requires a big shrinkage process.

This is where we house our extra small props.

Take a look inside.

[bright music]

Oh, there's, there's Lucas in there, hi Lucas.

Hey, what's up?

Alright, I'm gonna let him get back to work.

So that is the extra small room.

All right, so this is what I call the mirror room.

And this is a really fun place for us to actually duplicate

our props or our camera gear.

Like take this camera for example.

It's actually pretty valuable to have, but no,

let me show you the actual reveal here.

I don't usually show this off,

but this is Lucas, hi Lucas.

And we've actually learned to be in sync for this trick,

'cause we'll do it on live streams

where we'll do this on YouTube or video calls with fans.

Do things like this.

And we just have practiced so many times

that we're kind of in sync for stuff.

This is also an area that I'll use for things

like a painting where I get completely covered in acrylic

and crawl out of the wall, that'll be done here.

But it's a fun mirror to have, trip people out in real life.

Lucas and I will come out here and just practice

over and over and play with different objects.

Obviously we have to have duplicates of everything,

but we do keep duplicates in our storage of so many items

ranging from toothbrushes, toilet paper.

So we were constantly thinking of gags

that we could do live.

This is an installation that we actually built

in order to do Zoom with our fans,

and that didn't require any post-work.

And those again are some of my favorite effects

because they're done in-camera.

All it requires is that extra amount of practice,

and hours and hours of just making sure

things look exactly correct.

So I hope you guys enjoyed that exclusive prop tour

and you got a little inside look into the magic,

I'll see you around the internet.

[whooshing]

And just in case you're wondering, it's a common question,

I do do all of my own sound effects.

Watch Zach Bryan Join Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Onstage for ‘King of Oklahoma'

Zach Bryan brought his Quittin Time Tour to Detroit's Ford Field on Thursday night and used the opportunity to sing with the artist he calls one of "the best songwriters of all time," Jason Isbell.

Isbell and the 400 Unit are playing a string of dates on Bryan's stadium tour , and near the end of the opening set, Isbell welcomed Bryan onstage to duet on "King of Oklahoma," off Isbell's 2023 Weathervanes album.

"Thanks for letting me ruin your song Mr. Isbell. I respect you and care for your music more than life itself. It was a privilege and an honor to meet a hero," Bryan self-deprecatingly wrote on Twitter following the performance. "Can't wait to hear this without my voice on it at the next one, we love ya!"

Bryan plays the Buckeye Country Superfest this weekend in Columbus, Ohio, before linking back up with Isbell in Foxborough, Massachusetts, next week for another Quittin' Time Tour stop at Gillette Stadium on June 26. Isbell and the 400 Unit also open Bryan's New Orleans, Houston, Tampa, and Arlington, Texas, dates later this summer.

Bryan also announced the release date of his next album: The Great American Bar Scene arrives on Independence Day, July 4. Ahead of the release, 23 select bars in the U.S. - including Barnacle Bill's in Rumson, New Jersey; Fox & Locke in Franklin, Tennessee; and McGlinchey's in Philadelphia - will be debuting the record.

"My intent with all this is to give everyone an early glimpse of this album, but more importantly this is in the spirit of bringing people together for a memorable moment," he said in a statement. "As much as I'd kill to play all these timeless bars, it won't be possible. I will be visiting a few off the list to have a drink with ya'll."

It’s no wonder this video magician was drawn to Asheville, where you can find magical moments at nearly every turn.

That’s just what Zach King discovered on his adventures in town. See for yourself by watching the video below!

BONUS: See how young Zach King fans from Asheville reacted when we gave them a special sneak peek of Zach's video!

Build Your Own Magical, Family-Friendly Adventure By Following in Zach’s Footsteps

Asheville has a personality, culture and vibe all its own. The "Paris of the South" is known for its unique outdoor cafes , local boutiques and cozy coffee shops .

Double D's Coffee

Just remember to tip your barista or server. If only we could all turn a cell phone photo into actual cash money like Zach does!

See What Surprises Await You in Downtown!

As Zach runs through Asheville, he shows us some of the landmarks you can explore on your next visit to bustling downtown .

Early Girl Eatery

As Zach first encounters the bicyclist, we see him run past the historic Flat Iron sculpture (which he magically turns into a helmet!). The giant laundry iron was designed by local artist Reed Todd, inspired by the irons that were used at the turn of the century at the Asheville Laundry. The sculpture sits just outside of the Flat Iron Building, an iconic wedge-shaped building built in 1926.

Asheville-born funk & soul musician Lyric

After hopping on the bike, Zach travels toward the Harrah's Cherokee Center - Asheville  and Thomas Wolfe Auditorium . This arena complex is home to Asheville’s largest venues and frequently plays host to special events, sports competitions and national and local performers.

Grove Arcade

Nearby the Grove Arcade, you'll find the Asheville Pinball Museum -- a great stop for family fun! Pay the admission and have access to more than 30 classic pinball machines for endless entertainment!

Hemingway's Cuba

Expect the Unexpected

Remember, the big purple bus Zach meets face-to-face? The LaZOOM Comedy Bus Tour is a fun way to experience Asheville.

LaZOOM

LaZoom has a special tour designed just for kids! The Kids' Comedy Tour features a blend of Asheville history with kid-centric comedy that is geared toward children ages 5-12.

Discover the Districts

As Zach and the bicyclist try to catch up with the coffee, you’ll see them “crash” in front of a brightly-colored mural. The mural, Bower Power , by Asheville artist Lara Nguyen is one of the many murals and public art pieces in Asheville , which known as one of the best places in the country for art lovers .

Nguyen has a studio inside the building where the mural is located. In fact, the Refinery Creator Space is home to many artist studios and exhibitions presented by the Asheville Area Arts Council.

The Refinery Creator Space is located in the South Slope Brewery District . In addition to art and breweries, The South Slope is home to some of Asheville's most popular restaurants. Families will love Asheville Brewing Company  with its big outdoor patio and games.

Pink Dog Creative, River Arts District

Magic Moments at Every Turn Along America’s Favorite Scenic Drive

Parkway Tunnel with Rhododendron

If Zach didn’t need to catch up with his boss’s coffee, he could have gone for a hike on one of the many trails that begin along the Parkway. You’ll find trails for all skill levels that you can hike to mountain vistas, waterfalls and lush green forests.

Feel the Mansion Magic of Biltmore

Biltmore

As Zach mentions, there's no valet. But there is ample parking with shuttles that run from the parking lots to Biltmore house.

Rest and Relax

After day of adventures in town (hopefully not as chaotic as Zach’s coffee adventure!), settle into one of Asheville’s many inviting accommodations . From hotels to cabin getaways to chic boutiques, Asheville is sure to have a place where you can rejuvenate and rest with your family before your next day of adventures!

“It Was A Privilege And An Honor To Meet A Hero” – Zach Bryan Joins Jason Isbell On Stage For “King Of Oklahoma”

They say don’t meet your heroes but it looks like Zach Bryan gets along with his just fine.

Zach Bryan’s   Quittin’ Time  tour made a stop in Detroit last night and opening the show was none other than Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, a band that Zach has long been a massive fan of.

When it comes to pure songwriters, few will deny the greatness of Jason Isbell and Zach is never afraid to sing the praises of the artist he claims changed his life, taking to X often to voice his support for Isbell’s work.

He’s even gone so far as to say he wants to release a Jason Isbell cover album when his record deal is over which is something I think all of us would love to hear.

Once my record deal is over I’m going to make right on all my promises when it comes to releases but the first thing I do make an Isbell cover record because what the hell man — Zach Bryan (@zachlanebryan) May 25, 2024

It’s become a thing for Zach to invite his openers to join him on stage during the headlining set, especially during the “Revival” encore, but last night was different and Zach had the opportunity to hop on stage before his call time to play a song that means a whole lot to him with the man who wrote it.

“King Of Oklahoma” is the second track on Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s 2023 album  Weathervanes , a project that I believe remains completely undervalued in the Isbell catalogue. As to be expected, it’s a beautifully written song with a chorus that’s especially catchy.

“She used to wake me up with coffee ever morning And I’d hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor She used to make me feel like the king of Oklahoma But nothing makes me feel like much of nothing anymore”

Zach previously posted a cover of the song with JR Carroll but I’m sure singing it with Isbell is a moment he’ll never forget.

The fact he’s been able to have both Isbell and the Turnpike Troubadours open on his tour shows just how big of an act he’s become and the fact that new found fans are exposed to that quality of songwriting and performance is nothing but great for the genre.

Head on over to Vivid Seats and score some tickets to a Zach Bryan show near you. They give you a free ticket for every 10 you buy and there’s no better time to start earning rewards than this summer.

thanks for letting me ruin your song Mr. Isbell. I respect you and care for your music more than life itself. It was a privilege and an honor to meet a hero Can’t wait to hear this without my voice on it at the next one, we love ya! pic.twitter.com/XgvuCGkI4J — Zach Bryan (@zachlanebryan) June 21, 2024

Zach wilson’s new slick-backed hair is so cringey, and we can’t un-see it, share this article.

There’s an old stereotype about an oft-bullied, dorky kid who thinks he can reinvent himself at his new school. They decide that changing a surface-level aspect of their personality will be enough for a respected reputation with people who don’t know them. Of course, it never is because that’s not how it works.

Enter Zach Wilson, king of the bullied .

The ex-New York Jet is beginning his first season as a quarterback for the Denver Broncos . After spectacularly busting with Gang Green, Wilson is clearly ready for the fresh change of scenery.

I know this because he unveiled a new slicked-back hairstyle for his time with Mile High. No one’s going to bully him anymore. No way!

To me, the hairdo makes Wilson look like a bizarre cross of Gordon Gecko from Wall Street and a bog-standard star player on a lacrosse team. I’m not sure what he was thinking other than maximizing an opportunity to be the cool new kid at his new school.

We’ll see if that gambit works.

NFL fans had so many jokes about Zach Wilson’s new hairstyle

Hopefully, Prince William doesn’t listen to the “New Heights” podcast.

During a recent episode of the Kelce brothers’ podcast, Jason Kelce, 36, voiced his opinion on monarchies while discussing Father’s Day traditions in Thailand.

“I’m out on honoring kings,” the former Philadelphia Eagles center said on the June 19 episode. “Listen, we’re Americans. We don’t do royalty.”

Jason and Travis Kelce in the June 19 episode of their "New Heights" podcast

He continued: “F – – k kings. But I wouldn’t mind [wife] Kylie [Kelce] kneeling at my feet.”

Travis Kelce swiftly motioned for his brother to change the subject with a panicked look on his face, perhaps because he knew he was meeting Prince William, the future king of England, just days later.

“Not f – – k kings, but just not into it,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, stated. “Why are you into people kneeling at your feet?”

“Not f–k kings, but just not into it,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end stated.

“It’s out of respect, it’s Father’s Day,” Jason responded. “Maybe feed me some grapes.”

Travis argued that his older brother can’t be “out on kings and in on people bowing.”

“I’m not into people bowing,” Jason explained. “I’m into my children bowing to me to show me respect, goddammit.”

Travis argued that Jason can’t be “out on kings and in on people bowing.”

With impeccable timing, Travis then met Prince William, 42, Prince George, 10, and Princess Charlotte, 9, after the first night of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop at Wembley Stadium on Friday. The group posed for a selfie together after the concert, which was also William’s 42nd birthday.

“Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start 🇬🇧🇺🇸🤝,” Swift, 34, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, uploading the internet-breaking selfie.

William and Kate Middleton’s official Instagram also shared the historic selfie, with the caption reading: “Thank you @taylorswift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour.”

William and Swift first met in 2013 when they appeared onstage together at the Centrepoint Gala with Jon Bon Jovi. The two went viral when they joined the musician, 62, in his performance of “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

After Travis meeting the heir to the UK throne became publicized, “New Heights” fans were quick to make connections to Jason’s previous comments.

“The timing of this New Heights clip couldn’t have been any better!” one user wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Taylor Swift, Prince William, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte pose for a selfie following the Eras Tour concert at Wembley Stadium on Friday.

William visibly enjoyed his time at the show , as he was spotted dancing as if no one was watching to Swift’s “Shake It Off.”

Travis also had quite the performance, stealing the show when he joined Swift onstage during the third and final Wembley show on Sunday night.

Travis Kelce joined Taylor Swift onstage before her "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart" performance.

In a top hat and tuxedo, he took part in the outfit-change segment before the Grammy winner performed “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a song on her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

The NFL star went all out in his onstage moment as he carried Swift across the stage and “touched up” her makeup.

Sting delivers a rousing show on My Songs tour with fan favorites: 'I am a very lucky man'

zach king tour

VIENNA, Va. – Never mind when Sting talks about tantric sex .

His stamina as a performer and musician should be celebrated mightily.

At the scenic Filene Center at Wolf Trap Sept. 1, Sting played the first of two sold-out shows to kickstart the new North American leg of his My Songs tour , an outing that has circled the globe since 2019 – excepting a 2020 pandemic sidelining – and detoured as a Las Vegas residency.

Without pausing for a breath or break, the 71-year-old craftsman of some of the most sophisticated pop-rock in modern music barreled through an opening quintet of chestnuts that seesawed between Police mainstays (“Message in a Bottle,” “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”) and his storied solo career (“Englishman in New York,” “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You”).

These are not three-minute radio hits. They’re songs packed with challenging lyrics, complicated rhythms and serpentine codas. Intermingled elements of jazz, pop, rock and reggae. Poetic expressions of soul searching, quixotic love and yearning.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

And yet, there was Sting, his voice as muscular as his biceps, headset firmly locked to allow him to roam the stage, bass neck titled upward as he leaned into his nimble finger work, rolling through his repertoire with ease.

In a field of graying rock icons, Sting is a platinum-topped torch bearer.

Which hits is Sting playing on his My Songs tour?

With a resume spanning nearly more than 45 years of material, Sting’s musical cup overfloweth with options.

But the point of the tour is to spotlight hits – still an impossible task given his dozen Top 40 smashes as a solo artist and another nine with the Police – while also paying remembrance to a few meaningful album tracks.

The precise musicianship of his excellent band, including longtime musical partner Dominic Miller on guitar, Zach Jones on drums and Kevon Webster on keyboards, provided “Fields of Gold” with a silky warmth (the stage, naturally, bathed in a burnt-orange hue) and pushed the soaring melody of the erudite “All This Time.”

Jam sessions: Steve Miller recalls late '60s San Francisco music having 'a dark side' but 'so much beauty'

Sting teased ace harmonica player Shane Sager that he couldn’t match the proficiency of Stevie Wonder’s original playing on “Brand New Day,” but the twentysomething Sager met the challenge with his soulful squawking throughout the song’s lackadaisical sway.

The well-paced, 19-song set list is bookended with some of Sting’s most recognizable singalongs, including Police favorites “Walking on the Moon” (no one “eeh-yoh-oh”s like Sting) and “So Lonely,” which dovetailed into its spiritual mate, Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry,” a showcase for Sting’s fluid bass work.

One of the most dynamic aspects of Sting’s music is its broad-minded sensibilities. Not many pop-rock stars could fashion a hit out of a pairing with an Algerian singer, as Sting did in 2000 with Cheb Mami. Their worldwide hit, “Desert Rose,” still stimulated with its collection of chanting, atypical cadence and Sting’s suggestively jutting right hip.

Likewise, the pair of pre-encore tracks from the Police’s final album, the landmark “Synchronicity” from 1983, reminded of that band’s inimitable magic.

“King of Pain,” its lyrics stacked with elegantly bleak imagery, its bridge both puzzling and profound, proved emotionally searing (Sting’s son, Joe Sumner, who opened the show, returned to trade verses with his dad).

And of course, the song most associated with Sting and the Police , “Every Breath You Take,” elicited the expected roar from the crowd as they sang along to this speedier live version over Sting’s haunting bass line.

While the radio favorites are certainly worth commemorating, the chosen album tracks and smaller hits that Sting has curated for the show also warrant attention. Background singer Melissa Musique slayed during a joyful spotlight moment on “Heavy Cloud No Rain,” while fellow backup vocalist Gene Noble infused “Shape of My Heart,” its chiffon melody as gorgeous as ever, with meaningful soul.

Early in the show when he finally paused, Sting graciously offered, “I am a very lucky man to be standing here right now.”

Indeed, he is. But his fans share in that good fortune.

How long will Sting be on tour in North America?

Given the length of the My Songs outing, it’s no surprise Sting and his band present a taut, 100-minute production.

They’ll continue to unfurl this sleek outing through Oct. 15 – including Sting’s One Fine Day festival in Philadelphia Sept. 9 that will reunite him with unlikely musical buddy, Shaggy – before returning overseas.

Why the Sacramento Kings are shopping the No. 13 pick after nearly trading for Alex Caruso

The final, fatal night of a briefer-than-expected Sacramento Kings season had a side benefit to the heartache. It delivered the Kings an extra bit of valuable roster-building ammunition this week.

Had the Kings won their Play-In game in New Orleans, advancing into the eighth seed to face the Oklahoma City Thunder , their lottery-protected first-rounder would’ve been in Atlanta as part of the 2022 Kevin Huerter deal. But since they lost to the Pelicans , ending their season, the Kings kept the protected pick, slated 13th overall in Wednesday night’s draft.

The Kings already tried to use it for a significant roster upgrade. They were close to a trade for defensive ace Alex Caruso last week, according to league sources, offering the No. 13 pick to Chicago as the key chip. The Bulls , to the surprise of many within the league, instead opted to send Caruso to Oklahoma City for Josh Giddey .

League sources say the Kings have shuffled several late lottery-level prospects through their facility in recent weeks, including Zach Edey, the 7-foot-4 National Player of the Year who could theoretically offer a level of rim protection the Kings have been lacking.

But it’s difficult to slot any traditional center in a lineup next to Domantas Sabonis and — in the bigger picture — there’s more of an internal appetite to add veteran help to a win-now situation as opposed to a rookie. That’s why the 13th pick remains very available in trade talks heading into the draft, according to league sources, along with the necessary cap filler and even extra picks for the right player.

Sacramento’s most pressing offseason business is already done. Head coach Mike Brown agreed to an extension earlier this month, and Malik Monk turned down a chance to get bigger per year money on the open market, accepting the Kings’ max offer of four years, $78 million to stay put, keeping Sacramento’s core intact. Monk, the runner-up for Sixth Man of the Year, has expressed a desire to start long term but signed back with the Kings without any assurances on his exact role next season, league sources said.

Monk’s choice to commit so early came with a significant advantage, allowing the Kings to turn their full attention to the significant upgrade they are seeking. The vision, in its most optimistic state, is to maximize what they believe is a three-to-six year winning window around De’Aaron Fox, Sabonis, Monk and Keegan Murray by landing an early to mid-prime player who can grow with the core.

Fox’s future looms in the background too, as league sources say the All-Star guard has decided not to sign an extension this year, in part, because he wants to see how the roster takes shape for the long-haul. Fox, who has two seasons left on his current deal, wants to win at the highest level and could also qualify for a significantly larger max if he makes All-NBA.

The Kings have been close on deals in the past but ultimately come up empty-handed. Caruso is the latest. Pascal Siakam might be the most significant. The Kings were close to a Siakam deal at the past trade deadline, but they ultimately lost out to Indiana when the Pacers paired the two-time All-Star with former King Tyrese Haliburton en route to an Eastern Conference finals run.

The move would have been a calculated risk for the Kings, as there were strong signs at the time Siakam would not re-sign with Sacramento if he had come. Still, league sources say there is some lingering regret internally about the what-might-have-been-move and the question of whether the Kings could have convinced Siakam to stay.

Back in July 2021, still in his first year as general manager, Monte McNair attempted to trade Buddy Hield for Kyle Kuzma in a deal that Kings officials believed at the time was all but done. The Los Angeles Lakers pivoted at the last minute and sent Kuzma as part of a package to the Washington Wizards for Russell Westbrook .

Ever since, McNair and the Kings have maintained a varying level of interest in trading for Kuzma, which has picked back up to some degree this summer. Kuzma has an appealing contract. He is under control for the next three seasons at an affordable and declining rate: $23.5 million, $21.4 million, $19.4 million, attached to a trade kicker that would add $3 million each season unless Kuzma waives it.

He remains a name to watch for the Kings heading into the week. Zach LaVine has been rumored, and league sources confirm Sacramento has some level of interest, but he would arrive with a tricky contract situation. LaVine has three years and $137.8 left on his current deal, a perhaps unpalatable number considering the Kings’ growing financial picture. Any deal on this front, league sources said, would likely involve the Kings needing to be incentivized to take on LaVine’s massive deal.

As pressure rises to advance further in the playoffs, everyone is getting more expensive. Sabonis’ contract rises from $29.3 million to $40-plus million for the next four years, Murray is a summer away from extension eligibility and Fox, desiring an aggressive win-now approach, eventually has a lucrative decision to make. The entire equation makes the Kings a team to watch entering transaction season in the NBA .

What media & entertainment execs are saying about using gen ai: the vip+/harrisx spring 2024 survey, popular on variety.

Bryan makes it awfully difficult to be in a solemn mood at one of his shows, in short — his penchant for rowdy showmanship ensures that. But there’s another reason to be in a good mood, watching him play: It’s from realizing afresh just how wildly successful he has become by throwing out any playbook that exists for how to get there. His radio play is nearly non-existent… deliberately so, probably, since last week he was sending out complaining tweets when he thought his record label was actively promoting “Pink Skies” to pop radio. (He apologized when it turned out he was mistaken.) He doesn’t do television appearances or interviews. He’s never even had a flashpoint viral moment. It’s just relatable songs, rousingly performed with the spirit of an Okie-fied Springsteen or Mellencamp. This genre-unspecific music is largely being received by a segment of the mainstream country audience that’s been ditching the party anthems of that other big heartland Bryan — Luke — for this one’s more poetic fare.

And he has fantastic taste in collaborators/opening acts. Sunday and Monday is was the War and Treaty invited to Crypto to recreate a duet from his last album, “Hey Driver,” with Sierra Ferrell set to assume the same spot Tuesday night. Even if you don’t love the songs, it’d be difficult to see anything other than sheer upside in how his massive success has gone down.

But there is a lot to love about the songs, too, and not just his ornery-populist methodology. At Crypto, a lot of the two-hour running time was devoted to taking songs that are deeply interior on record and turning them into barnburners, in subtle shifts that didn’t compromise the material’s integrity. His self-titled album from last summer marked a somewhat surprising turn toward quirky, lo-fi production values, but the five songs Bryan played from that album in concert didn’t sound much different from the six he performed from 2022’s more overtly commercial “American Heartbreak.” Starting the show with the ostensibly contemplative “Overtime,” Bryan managed to turn it into more of an obvious live blockbuster just by bellowing the title word instead of murmuring it, at the end of every stanza — the kind of small shift that can make a big difference in a performance. But when it came time to end the song, he toned it down again. Bryan isn’t afraid to wrap up a tune on a hushed note, even finishing songs with an unresolved-sounding a cappella coda now and again, in an arena show that is also duty-bound to deliver a fair amount of bluster.

These songs were equal parts country, Western (not to confuse, conflate or hyphenate those two), folk, rock, and the folk-rock hybrid formerly known as stomp-and-holler. Steel guitar and lap steel (albeit not on a lap, but played in a standing position) became increasingly utilized over the course of the set, but played with more of a rock feel than anything tying them to traditional Nashville. Bryan noted that his usual violin player was absent on paternity leave, which gave a chance for a guest fiddler, Hannah Cohen, to shine in the spotlight and happily disrupt the otherwise all-male lineup. Utility player Read Connelly gets the biggest recurring comic moment of the night, during the show’s inevitable climax, “Revival,” during which he falls to the stage floor and plays dead for a pregnant pause, only to snap back to life — revival , get it? — and, from a crouch, burn through the night’s first and last major banjo solo.

The show found Bryan in a similar position to where he was when he came through Crypto.com last year for a single-nighter: about to release an album, and not about to give away too much about it. Other than “Pink Skies,” the only number he performed to preview the next record was its apparent title song, “The Great American Bar Scene.” (As wtih “Oklahoma Smokeshow,” he changed the location in the title to “California,” so that the cutoff Lakers jersey he was wearing wasn’t the only sop to local culture.) That’s more than he played from a forthcoming album last year, when he didn’t preview any of the songs from “Zach Bryan” even though that album release was days away at the time. It’s unclear when “Great American Bar Scene” might be coming out: In a recent tweet, Bryan made it sound as if he might imminently, spontaneously release it, but on stage, he said only that the album is forthcoming “this year,” which leaves a lot of wiggle room. Whenever he does opt to drop it, it could be the album to finally dislodge Taylor Swift from the top spot; there probably aren’t enough variants in the world to keep Bryan from taking an appointed spot at No. 1. But with a shortage of live previews, fans will have to keep guessing whether the album will be as interior as the self-titled effort or as anthemic as “American Heartbreak.”

The presence of the husband-and-wife duo the War and Treaty as a galvanizing opening act of course bid well for a sure highlight in the headliner’s set: a revival of Bryan’s duet with Michael Trotter on “Hey Driver,” possibly the best song off last year’s self-titled album. Bryan apologized for all the “shitty” versions he and his band had done of the song on tour to date without the Trotters, before launching into a new vocal arrangement that, unlike the record, made room for Michael’s wife Tanya, and three-part harmony instead of two-. An additional, humble solution on Bryan’s part was just to hand over to Tanya some of the lead vocal lines he handled in the studio. The War and Treaty have been doing their own cover of the song out on tour (including two performances at Stagecoach), but getting to hear this blend of voices was a treat you’d wish could be handed down to all the audiences along Bryan’s tour routing this year, and not just a selected few.

Bryan and his band made their way backstage through a path cut through the audience, then returned through the same open tunnel, bringing in tow some of the backstage VIPs — Tate McRae, Casey Affleck and various local sports figures among them — for the traditional jump-around “all-night revival” finale to his show. It’s a churchy way to go out, but after a lot of down-and-out sketches dressed up as rabble-rousers throughout the preceding two hours, it didn’t hurt to finally revert to some pure, star-studded Pentecostalism at quitting time.

NBA 2024 Consensus Mock Draft: Most Likely Kings Targets

Logan struck | jun 24, 2024.

  • Providence Friars

The 2024 NBA Draft is a slim two days away, and experts are having a difficult time predicting who the Sacramento Kings will be selecting on Wednesday night. The Kings came one win short of a 2024 playoff appearance, but their shortcomings resulted in the franchise landing the 13th overall pick in the draft, giving them an excellent opportunity to add some fresh talent.

To gauge who draft experts and NBA pundits are predicting the Kings to land at pick 13, we cycled through 50 mock drafts from sources like Bleacher Report, CBS Sports, ESPN, The Ringer, and many more.

Here are the most likely draft prospects for Sacramento, and how often they showed up in mock drafts:

G Devin Carter, Providence - 18%

G rob dillingham, kentucky - 16%, f ron holland, g league ignite - 12%, g ja'kobe walter, baylor - 10%, f tidjane salaun, france - 8%, g jared mccain, duke - 8%, c kel'el ware, indiana - 6%, g carlton "bub" carrington, pittsburgh - 4%, g nikola topic, serbia - 4%, f cody williams, colorado - 4%, f kyshawn george, miami - 4%, f daron holmes ii, dayton - 2%, c zach edey, purdue - 2%, c donovan clingan, uconn - 2%.

According to the experts, the most likely prospect to be crowned a King on draft night is Providence Friars guard Devin Carter.

At 22 years old, Carter is one of the more experienced lottery-projected prospects in this year's class. The do-it-all guard is elite on the defensive end, a crafty playmaker, and a hustler all over the floor. The 6-foot-2 guard does not fit a positional need for the Kings, but he will most likely be the best player available if he falls to pick 13.

DEVIN CARTER ICE IN HIS VEINS 🥶 (via @CBBonFOX ) pic.twitter.com/EyOYD2VwbK — Overtime (@overtime) February 8, 2024

The next two most likely picks for Sacramento are Kentucky's flashy guard Rob Dillingham and G League Ignite's exceptionally athletic wing Ron Holland.

Dillingham's stock has been dropping as many experts question his small frame and defensive capabilities. Still, the highly skilled combo guard is likely the best ballhandler in this class and an elite bucket-getter at any level.

Holland is one of the top prospects in this year's class, but his draft night projection is all over the place. An athletic freak with tools that should translate to the next level, experts seem too harsh on his lackluster jump shot. At worst, Holland is an elite slasher with impressive defensive skills.

While nobody seems to know who the Kings will be selecting on Wednesday, or whether they will even keep the pick, there is no doubt that a stud will be available at 13.
