What did Babolat Update with the 2024 Pure Strike?

Overall, Babolat made subtle changes to the Pure Strike racquets for the 2024 versions.

• Babolat dropped the Pure Strike Tour from the lineup.
• New Pure Strike 100 16×20 added to the lineup.
• Babolat Pure Strike VS changes name to Pure Strike 97.
• Pure Strike 100 is softer and offers greater feel.

The main updates with the 2024 Pure Strike are the removal of the Pure Strike Tour and the addition of the Pure Strike 100 16×20. The new racquet offers a little more control than the regular Pure Strike 100, while also being more head light and softer. This makes the Pure Strike 100 16×20 move very fast through the air and more arm-friendly.

Other than the new racquet added to the lineup, Babolat didn’t change very much with this update. The specs are almost identical, with the exception of the Pure Strike 100 going down in stiffness. However, all of the racquets feature a slight increase in control and a more direct feel.

Babolat Pure Strike Racquet Specifications

The technical specifications of this 3rd generation are similar to previous versions. However, there are a few updates we will show you below.

There are several versions of the Pure Strike. We will be reviewing the most popular version (98 square inch, 16×19) here, and show you the other models below.

• Weight: 11.4 oz. strung
• Head Size:  98 square inches
• Length:  27 inches
• Stiffness:   64
• Balance:  330.2 mm
• String Pattern:  16 x 19

This racquet is slightly heavier than the other Babolat tennis racquets . It will offer better stability against pace and on your volleys.

The 98 square inch head makes this a high-performance racquet for advanced players who can generate their own power. If you need more help with control, the Pure Strike is a great choice.

This racquet has a 16×19 string pattern which will help players generate spin from the baseline and when serving. However, this racquet can’t offer the same spin or power as the Babolat Pure Aero . The Pure Strike makes up for that with better control and feel.

The Pure Strike Offers Excellent Control & Feel

Perhaps the biggest advantage you get with the Babolat Pure Strike is the control and feel on your shots. It is one of the best 8 tennis racquets for control .

The narrower beam, smaller head size, and frame technology all help to increase your ability to move the ball around the court with precision.

This 3rd generation incorporates a new dampening technology that helps you feel the ball on the racquet longer. This may sacrifice a bit of power, but improves your ability to place and control the ball. The frame design makes this racquet great for both groundstrokes and volleys.

This Racquet is Great for Returns, Groundstrokes, and Volleys

The added control mentioned above will help players change direction and feel confident in their shots.

However, the extra stability helps even more. Players will be able to defend more easily against fast-paced balls like returning big first serves or reflex volleys.

If you already have a good serve, but need help with the returns and groundstrokes, the Pure Strike can help. It’s also a great tennis racquet for doubles players seeking more control and stability on their volleys.

The Pure Strike is for Players Who Create Their Own Power

Advanced players with good technique and strength will get the most out of the Pure Strike. ATP player Dominic Thiem uses the Pure Strike 18×20 version. If you’ve watched him play, then you know that he has no problem hitting with pace.

Strong intermediate players should also consider the Pure Strike. It’s certainly one of the best tennis racquets on the market for this group of players.

This Racquet has Good Mobility & Spin

Because this racquet has a 98 square inch head with a narrower frame and isn’t too heavy, the Pure Strike is easy to handle. Singles and doubles players will have no issue moving around the court and recovering for the next shot with this tennis racquet.

The 16×19 string pattern will help generate extra spin as well. Babolat actually uses FSI Technology in the strings, which means there is added space in the crosses towards the end of the racquet. This extra space will grab the tennis ball more and help you create even more spin.

There are several different versions of the Pure Strike 3rd Gen tennis racquet. Depending on your playing style and skill-level, one version might be better for you than another.

The Babolat Pure Strike has an excellent combination of control, feel, and stability making it a very popular tennis racquet among elite players.

My Experience with the 2024 Pure Strike

The Babolat Pure Strike has always been a mixed bag for me. I have always enjoyed getting the chance to hit with any racquet from the Pure Strike line, but something always feels a little off, so I have never purchased one.

This time around I was able to practice and play some matches with the 2024 Pure Strike 97, which is the new version of the Pure Strike VS. It is actually the same head size as my current racquet of choice, the Yonex Vcore Pro 97HD with a similarly dense string bed.

I enjoy the extra stability and easy depth I get when using the Pure Strike. It is particularly helpful on the serve return and on defense. It still provides above-average control as well, and offers a very direct feel.

However, I was left wanting a little more comfort and maneuverability.

At net and on serve, I found that the Pure Strike could use a little more maneuverability. It felt a little slow through the air, which made it difficult for me to find the sweet spot consistently. 

The direct feel gave me extremely crisp volleys that devastated my opponents. But that same feel made the racquet feel a little jarring when playing against big hitters. While I don’t like a racquet to feel muted, I do prefer a little bit of dampening technology to help increase comfort.

Overall, the Pure Strikes are great racquets, they just aren’t for me. I would recommend this racquet to intermediate to advanced players looking for a racquet with a great combination of control and stability that don’t mind sacrificing a little maneuverability.

Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 Review

Some months back I created a Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 review on my YouTube channel. Now it’s finally available for sale.

I concluded my Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 review positively. It’s great that Babolat brings back the Pure Control with a new name. A thinner beam, lower flex, leather grip and a 16×20 pattern will surely please a lot of control racquet lovers. The racquet plays with great feel and control, but it’s not without decent power. It’s a pretty demanding frame and you need to have solid technique and be a pretty advanced (NTRP 4.0+) player to use it, but if you like this type of racquet, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022.

I tried the racquet with both Solinco Hyper-G Soft 1.20 and Solinco Outlast 1.20  at my usual reference tension around 51 lbs and enjoyed both setups. As expected, I got more spin potential with Hyper-G and more control from Outlast.

Pure Strike VS Specs

I felt like the racquet needed a little bit of weight in the hoop to play with more plow-through and power. 2-3 grams at 12 did the trick for me.

How does it play?

If you tried old Babolat Pure Control racquets, this one plays in the same vein. Good control and feel (a little bit firmer than most of the older ones, but not harsh by any means), great looks and playability for advanced players.

I felt like the weight at 310 grams unstrung is close to perfect. It allows you some customization and maintains a good balance of being maneuverable yet stable.

It’s a racquet to rival the HEAD Radical Pro  (and Boom Pro in a way), the Wilson Blade 98 18×20 and the Yonex VCORE Pro 97 .

For players who enjoy the Babolat Pure Strike 98 Gen 3 , but want a softer feel and more control, the Pure Strike VS is a must-demo.

Beautiful paintjob, from the pic it looks like it’s got an allover gloss finish as well (fingers crossed!). Specs are excellent as well. Unfortunately it is not (yet?) available in Europe, as the article mentions.

On TW it’s $269 that does not bode well for the price in EUROs. Which, for reasons I don’t get, is usually HIGHER than the price in dollars (1 EUR = 1.09990 USD atm (23-3) ).

Also I read rumors that the Pure Strike VS was going to be a Limited Edition (or ltd run). Is that true?

The specs look very interesting to me and definitely a frame I would like to test in 2022. I play with the latest version of the Dunlop CX 200 Tour 18×20 with quite some lead at 3 and 9 and some lead at 12. Frame is around 330 grams without strings My initial question is how does this Babolat Pure Strike VS compare to Dunlop CX 200 Tour 18×20 and do you think some extra lead is needed in this Babolat as well? Thanks!

The Pure Strike VS actually has broader spacing in the mains/horizontals…. and the crosses have same spacing as the 98 16×19… but the last two verticals in top/bottom… The size of the head/frame is really the same. You can see that when laying one over the other. They are both 98’s. VS is written to be 97 but that is not true….. on the racket is written 626 cm2=97 inch2….but its the same size as the PS 98. written on PS 98 is 630 which 97.5 inch2. laying them on top of eachother there is no difference. The broader spacing in the mains would in theory make the VS able to make smore spin and have in the sweetspot about the samme power/return of energy/sweetspot flex. The difference in the rackets mostly is the broader spacing in the mains in the VS, the stiffer frame in the 98 16×19 3rd gen. What I am saying is that the PS 98 16×19 has more control coming to the string spacing and the PSVS has more spin potiential. The VS’s beam is not 21-22-21 stated on most websites… but 21.5-22.5-21.5…….. and the Pure Strike 98 16 x 19 beam is has 21.5-23.5-22.5

Attention Talk Tennis Members: For the first playtest of 2024, we are pleased to offer a limited playtest of the brand new Babolat Pure Strike 98 16x19 and Pure Strike 100 16x20. This playtest is open to USA Talk Tennis members only. VERY IMPORTANT: Playtesters will be required to get their test racquet strung. Each racquet will be shipped with two set of strings (one poly/one multi). We will have two grip sizes available - grip 2 and 3. Application period is now closed. Selected participants will receive an email by January 10th, 2024. We have a very limited quantity of racquets to playtest. We select playtesters based on a number of factors, including message board participation and performance on past playtests. Your review is due by February 9th, 2024 by 5 pm PST . Posting a full review by the deadline is necessary to remain in good standing for future playtests. Reviews lacking sufficient effort will resort in disqualification from the playtest program. EXTREMELY interested in testing the 100 16x20 -- for all the obvious reasons! Looking to see how it stacks up to the Prestige MP-L 16x19 (65RA 21.5mm beam 16x19), as well as the 2019 Prince Textreme Tour 100P (66RA 100" 18x20), among others!  

Wonder if this is softer then V3. But with some arm issues, and a better endurance, I planned on going back to the pure strike VS when the weather warms up

Wonder how this will play. I was on the 100 playtest for the 3rd gen. Interesting to see they went with a 16x20 instead of 16x19. Honestly good idea. I have a Gravity MP (G360+), Shift 300, and Steam 100 - all of which are 16x20’s, so I’d like to see how they compare to the PS100.  

Yes!! Love that the PS100 has a 61 RA, may just be the change many need. Look forward to the feedback.

I have five of the current pure strikes in 3rd gen, great racquets. Really looking forward to seeing how the new ones perform.  

I’ve been waiting a long time for the new strike, it’s been on my mind as a frame to move on to from my extremes due to the extra mass. Looking forward to everyone’s feedback!

As always, Thanks TW for doing this! Edit: just browsed the specs and realized the 100 looks more like the VS than the 98 (but there's the 97 [PSVS successor] too). More options than I was expecting!

As a PK7G fan, the 16x20 Strike looks very interesting. Very similar to the standard length 5G, but less stiff. Most excited about that one. Historically I have not enjoyed the Pure Strike line other than the VS.

Tennis Warehouse - Review

Well, since they removed fsi power and replaced it with fsi control the launch angle should be lower and thats a GOOD THING  

Power is nice to have, but the Strikes have always felt a little “unfinished” or needed “fine-tuning”. Maybe lowering the stiffness will finally give it a better/ more refined feel.

Very interesting to see the 100. Spec mirrors the Gravity MP, but slightly beefier overall weight. What will be telling is whether it plays like a buttery flex like a Gravity/PT630 frame vs. a modern day constructed frame - meaning if the frame is a true 61 RDC vs the flex being contributed through the string pattern.  

If the new PS100 plays like a Gravity MP and offers more pop and no pain.. looks like I will be trying the new PS 100..

16x20 the lovechild of Gravity and Shift? Or just Babo’s version of a Gravity?  

Wow. I really like the specs of the 100 16x20. If the play testers say it’s comfortable, I will be interested.  

With the pure strike line in direct competition with Wilson blades, Head radicals & gravities, Yonex percepts, and to a lesser degree, Dunlop CXs, TF40s, and WOs, I'm really excited to read the results from this playtest to see how the latest PS generation stacks up against the competition and how it distinguishes itself from the field. Especially with the percept line being released within the last six months and a new blade release imminent!

The Strikes take lead pretty well and it’s almost light enough to add weight.  

Very interested in the 100 16x20 due to the flex rating. However, I am seeing differing ratings. TW says 61, and T Express says 64. Do they use different scales?  

Interesting that both Babolat and Yonex are putting out 100 sq. in. 16x20 racquets so close to each other, after not really offering anything similar in the last several years. Will be really fun to compare this and the Percept 100d once this releases!

As others have mentioned, I’m also very interested in the 100” 16x20. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against the Percept 100D as well as the Gravity MP.  

The Strike has always been the perfect compliment to the Pure Aero and Pure Drive ! As dynamic as those racquets are, somehow I can't my Pure Strikes (9816x19) down. Babolat seems to put some extra magic in these (power, control, spin and maneuverability) and you can never have too much magic !!

Excited to possibly play test the pure strike. I have tested every pure strike since its original release. The 16x20 100 might be the end of my racquet journey hopefully!  

Interesting spec revisions. As a port player I am waiting to see how this compares to the Prince Tour 100

Also excited to see how the ps100 16x20 performs. I loved the pure storm back in the day and haven't cuddled with babolat outside of the aero storm and pure aero vs. curious how comfortable the racquet is since I know a lot of the babolat frames are a bit stiff

Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 Racket Review

The Pure Strike range from Babolat has been a welcome addition to their lineup over the past decade or so. Replacing the ever popular Pure Storm, the Strike blends control, power and spin to give players a classic feel with a modern twist. The VS model is branded as Babolat’s precision tool that aims to rival the likes of the Wilson Pro Staff and Head Prestige. This brand stick was sent to us from Babolat directly, so it was great to get out there and test the racket!

The new Pure Strike VS is a racket we have been very much looking forward to testing here at The Tennis Bros. This is the most performance focussed racket in the line up, sporting a smaller 97sq in head size and a more striking design.

Babolat have gone for a more stealthy look with the new version of the Pure Strike, which is a stark contrast to their signature white and orange design language.

It is still recognisable as a Pure Strike, but is more reminiscent of the Pure Control series of rackets that the French brand brought out over a short period of time.

The racket is a touch softer than previous versions, bringing it more in line with the old school Pure Storm that so many recreational and professional players loved in the early 2000s. That racket was famed for its unique blend of control and ball pocketing, which gave a plush feel.

This is not something that many other Babolat rackets have managed to nail since, and it is the hope that the new Pure Strike VS will bring back that pure, player focussed feel.

The VS comes with Control Frame Technology, which enhances the feedback without adding harshness. This gives you a closer connection to your shots and helps you feel the ball in a more tactile way.

Well, we can definitely report that the racket lives up to the hype! The VS brings a new dimension to the Pure Strike family.

The VS variant from Babolat typically denotes a more control focussed racket, and this is certainly the case with this racket. It is a pin point accurate scalpel that will allow you to carve up your slices and rip your forehands and backhands with a great deal of control.

In the hand, the Pure Strike VS feels solid but whippy. It is a racket that is pretty easy to swing and leans more towards head light control rather than being a head heavy clubbing machine.

It is particularly effective on approach shots, as you can whip up the back of the ball and get the racket brushing the ball nicely, giving you plenty of margin for error.

This is an area of the court I felt particularly comfortable in with this racket, and this tends to be a bit of a litmus test of a control oriented racket.

It is not the most powerful racket in the world and this is to be expected. Given that the Pure Strike line is more aimed towards players looking to tame their natural power, this is a great racket for someone that takes a big cut at the ball and wants to add some precision to their game.

The racket feels more supple than previous iterations of the Pure Strike. There is not a huge amount of difference between this and the Pure Strike Tour in terms of flex rating, but the VS is a lot easier to swing and as a result is more approachable.

This makes it more suitable for an all court player that likes to slice and dice the ball from the back of the court, but also feel comfortable being the aggressor and taking their chances to come into the net.

If you are predominantly a baseline groundie crusher, perhaps the Pure Aero or Pure Drive would be more up your street.

This is not a racket that is designed for clubbing ground strokes all the time, and it can come across a little underpowered and unforgiving if this is how you use it.

The racket does feel reassuringly stable on contact, but the fact that it is so easy to swing can leave it lacking a little in that ‘easy power’ or plough through department.

Volleying with the new Pure Strike VS was an absolute joy. Short of being an ultra control focussed, under sized racket this is one of the best feeling rackets to volley with on the market today.

It just hits that perfect blend of feeling solid enough to give you confidence when swinging through the ball, whilst being light enough to get into position really easily.

The racket is in the goldilocks zone when it comes to stiffness too. Sometimes a racket that is really flexible can feel a little mushy, whilst a racket that is too stiff can be void of any real connection or feeling.

This strikes a really nice middle ground that left me feeling great after I had come into the net. There is a great amount of feedback from the Pure Strike VS, and the smaller head size gives this racket a level of accuracy that no other model in this family of rackets can match.

The VS version of the Pure Strike was a pinpoint accuracy stick to serve with. The open 16×20 string pattern also added to my ability to generate spin on second serves.

It wasn’t the most forgiving racket when looking for power on first serves however, and this is somewhere that it was let down ever so slightly.

I am the sort of player that relies on my first serve to set up my points. Given that this is a control focussed racket, it is clearly not going to offer the last word in easy power on the serve.

But, the fact that it performed so well in other areas around the court set my expectations high! This is clearly down to the lack of swing weight that this racket carries.

However, the Pure Strike VS more than made up for this lack of easy power with its solid feel, comfortable flex and impressive control of the ball.

This is the sort of racket that you can trust in your second serves when using, as the amount of spin and control you have gives you a level of confidence that many other rackets don’t.

If you are a player that likes to use finesse and chip balls back into play with accuracy, this racket could well be the perfect match for you.

It performs in a similar way to the Wilson Pro Staff in that it is a control focussed racket that will not give you much in the way of power, but will allow you to place the ball wherever you want.

One of the best assets of the Pure Strike VS is its ability to nullify pace when returning big first serves.

You just need to stick the racket out and block a return back and you can easily knife through the ball to produce an awkward return for your opponent to deal with.

It is also refreshing playing with an underpowered racket that you feel you can use without having to hold back on your returning swings.

This is something that actually gives you a bit more margin for error, as you can take a slightly larger cut at the ball and get away with it, allowing you to generate more angles and height over the net.

You can happily sit back in the court and rip the ball to smaller targets with this racket, as it gives you the reassurance that the ball will land safely, well inside the court thanks to the open string pattern and low levels of power.

Overall, the Babolat Pure Strike VS has been a real hit with us at The Tennis Bros. It is a fantastic control focussed addition to the Pure Strike lineup.

The pure, tactile feel of the racket will appeal to all court players that like to get to the net at any opportunity and use their hands rather than just out and out power to win their points.

This racket rivals the likes of the Wilson Pro Staff, Yonex VCORE and Head Speed lines. Babolat have done a great job in creating a more accessible, yet performance focussed version of the Pure Strike.

The racket is easy to swing and allows you to create plenty of racket head speed, but also rewards accuracy and clean hitting. The clue is in the name!

The new Babolat Pure Strike VS – maximum control with full confidence

The set is now complete! The launch of the Babolat Pure Strike VS means that all three of Babolat’s signature racquets – Pure Drive, Pure Aero, and Pure Strike – now have a specialist ‘VS’ version, offering enhanced advantages to those best suited to playing with them.

The VS series is designed to take the regular model of the racquet but make subtle changes that performance players will benefit from. The series began with the Pure Drive VS in 2019, the Pure Aero VS followed in 2020, and now the set is completed with the Pure Strike VS, aimed at high-skilled attacking players whose game is built around taking the ball early and looking for maximum control and precision.

Compared with the Pure Strike, the VS model has a slightly smaller head size. The head is 97 square inches instead of 98, which brings the extra precision, but it is better protected from scrapes with the court surface.

Babolat’s Tennis Group Marketing Manager Olivier Carlier says, “Every racquet has a protective ‘bumper’, a piece of plastic that protects the frame from damage if the player plays a low shot and the racquet scrapes against the ground at high speed. If you think of a racquet frame as a clockface, most bumpers are fitted from 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock, but on the Pure Strike VS we have extended it to running from 9 to 3 o’clock, to protect more of the frame and strings from abrasions, and maintain a high performance level.

“We worked on the stability of the racquet to offer maximum responsiveness,” he adds. “Responsiveness is the capacity of the ball to fly off the string, so the increased stability compensates for the small reduction in the sweet spot. The Pure Strike VS is the racquet in the Babolat range that gives most control, and with these adjustments, attacking players who hit with large swings will be able to play with full confidence.”

Added benefit for competitive players

The ‘VS’ label emerged over the first 50 years of Babolat’s history. The French family-owned company began making strings for racquet sports in 1875, and each experiment at improving the gut was accompanied by two letters to denote the material and the trial number. In 1925 the VS emerged as the highest quality of gut string, and Babolat has used the name ever since, mainly for its original product of high-quality gut strings, but more recently for other top-of-the-range products, like racquets.

The Babolat Pure Strike VS has a recommended retail price of €279.95. It comes with a leather grip for greater feel, and players wanting to buy two racquets can buy them in pairs with a guaranteed maximum weight difference of 1 gramme between the two – most tennis racquets (from all makers) can have a 7g variance across the same model, so the 1g guarantee helps the player know that if a string breaks during a match, the replacement racquet will be effectively identical.  

“Obviously we hope that players at all levels will adopt the Pure Strike VS,” says Olivier Carlier, “but during the two years we researched and tested it across the world, we realised we needed it in our range mainly for the competitive players. We have the three main Babolat models – the Pure Drive for baseliners who need to call on explosivity, the Pure Aero for those who play with a lot of spin, and the Pure Strike for attacking players who like to make the most of the opponent’s power to generate their own.

Babolat’s ‘most beautiful racquet’?

Visually, the Pure Strike VS will be as striking as its stablemates. Like the Pure Drive and Pure Aero VS models, it is a shiny chrome, but with the distinctive red of the standard Pure Strike colour scheme appearing as two stripes on the chrome. One brand ambassador has described it as “the most beautiful racquet Babolat has developed for many years.”

Another visual feature is the string pattern. Whereas the standard Pure Strike has either 16 main and 19 cross strings, or 18 mains and 20 crosses, the Pure Strike VS has a 16/20 pattern which Babolat’s research and testing showed was the best combination to create the optimum balance between control and power.  

So what kind of player will most benefit from the latest addition to Babolat’s range of quality racquets? Olivier Carlier sees a very clear spec: “If you play frequently, compete in tournaments, want a high level of performance and precision from your racquet, then you should certainly look at our VS range. And if you play with a large swing, hit generally flat, stay close to the baseline in order to take the ball on the rise, and often want to go to the net, the Pure Strike VS is the racquet that will allow you to hit freely with full confidence.”

The Tennis Warehouse playtesters were impressed with the Babolat Pure Strike 18x20 from their very first strikes of the ball. Perhaps that's not surprising when you consider how big a hit its 16x19 counterpart was with our testers, and the fact that the Pure Strike family is also heavily endorsed by professional players, most notably by Dominic Thiem. The Hybrid Frame Construction of the Pure Strike 18x20 is intended to provide an excellent feel and response, while FSI Power technology aims to boost power and spin potential. Our TW playtesters immediately found the control and spin they were looking for with this racquet. It felt quick up at net and offered a solid and responsive feel. Whether starting the point with a serve or a return, our TW playtesters were able to be aggressive and take control of the point. Players with fuller swings who are looking for a racquet with all around performance should look no further than the Babolat Pure Strike 18x20.

Babolat Pure Strike 18x20 Racquet Scores

Groundstrokes - score: 92.

The Babolat Pure Strike 18x20 courted the TW playtesters with exceptional feel and control, and slightly less free power than the Pure Strike 16x19. As a big fan of the previous version, as well as the 16x19 version of the Pure Strike, Chris was very excited to test this racquet. He said, "From the first hit I loved the control and feel I had on my shots. I felt like I could control the ball very, very well, and I was dialed in on my targets. I enjoyed the grip I was getting on the ball when I hit my slice backhand. I felt like I had a lot of control over the ball with that shot. I wasn't getting as much topspin as I did with the Pure Strike 16x19, but I wasn't too far off. There was also less power here compared to the Pure Strike 16x19. The lower power level let me take bigger swings at the ball when I wanted to be aggressive. I felt very confident attacking short balls, both when I was looking to hit an approach shot and when I wanted to go for a winner. The downside was that it made me work a little harder in defensive situations. I didn't have quite the same ability to bail myself out of trouble with one big swing. Both the Pure Strike 16x19 and my Pure Drive Plus give me what I call bailout power -- the ability to switch from defense to offense with one big shot. I'm going to try stringing this racquet around 42 lbs to see if I can get some of that pace and depth back."

The Pure Strike 16x19 is Hannah's racquet of choice, so getting to playtest the 18x20 version was exciting for her. She offered, "I have always gravitated toward 16x19 string patterns, and this frame was no exception. With that being said, there were aspects to this denser string pattern that I really enjoyed, and even preferred in some circumstances. The qualities of the Pure Strike beam that drew me to this frame in the first place were the dampened, yet crisp response, and the connected feel I got at impact. The beam was comfortable, even more comfortable with the 18x20 string pattern, and I really liked the amount of feel this racquet provided on contact without bothering my arm. Other than feel, the 18x20 pattern called for fuller swings, which in some circumstances I really liked. I found that I could hit targets and put the ball away easier when paired with good positioning. Lastly, the sweetspot was much smaller on the 18x20. While I could still play an aggressive baseline game, I had to be much more precise, and I found it was slightly tougher to adjust when catching balls on the rise, running around to hit a forehand or reaching out wide."

"It was a seamless transition to go from my own racquet, the Pure Strike 16x19, to this 18x20 version," Jason said. "It still has that same great feel and responsive feedback that I enjoy. I felt like there were some positives and negatives to the tighter string pattern. On the downside, I wasn't getting as much free power as I was with the 16x19, and the sweetspot seemed to be slightly smaller. The upside was the increase in control that let me swing out a little more."

Brittany also enjoyed the easy adjustment into the Pure Strike 18x20. She said, "Right off the bat, I really liked the feel of this racquet from the baseline. It was very easy to pick and play points right away. The only adjustment I had to make was to the 18x20 string pattern. I predominantly use 16x19 string patterns, so I had to make some small adjustments to be efficient. I was missing a little spin, so I wasn't going for as sharp of angles as I normally do. Nonetheless, my groundstrokes were landing deep in the court with ample pace. I could play close to the baseline and take balls on the rise to give my opponents less time to react."

Volleys - Score: 87

Up at net, the Pure Strike 18x20 was maneuverable and offered excellent feel in the hands of the TW playtesters. Brittany enjoyed coming up to net to finish the point. She offered, "The racquet is quick and crisp at the net. I felt very confident coming up to end points with a volley. I felt very connected to the racquet, and the stringbed was very predictable. I found success with half-volleys and hitting shorter, more angled volleys."

Chris loved the Pure Strike 18x20's performance at net. He praised, "I had lots of control and the racquet felt very comfortable. I found the Pure Strike 18x20 maneuverable enough to be effective on tough pick up volleys and half-volleys. I also felt like I was fending off body volleys well -- in part due to the racquet's maneuverability and partly due to a tip I got when hitting with doubles world No. 1 Bethanie Mattek-Sands (thanks, Beth!). I could whip it through quickly on overheads, and it was easy to add a little zip to volleys when I wanted. I liked the comfortable response. The racquet offered enough dampening even with a firm co-poly like Solinco Hyper-G in it, yet I still had a good connection to the ball."

"The same connection and feel I achieved at the baseline followed me to the net," Hannah said. "The Pure Strike's maneuverability and crisp feel were perfect for transitioning from the baseline to the net. I had no difficulty getting depth on my volleys and ending the point. The 18x20 string pattern offered even more stability and connection to the ball at net."

Volleys were one of the areas Jason preferred the 16x19 string pattern over the 18x20. He explained, "When I was able to hit a clean volley I thought the racquet was phenomenal. It had nice touch, good power, and plenty of spin. Dare I say that in those moments I preferred it over my own Pure Strike 16x19? But for the times I didn't hit the ball cleanly, I appreciate the forgiveness the Pure Strike 16x19 gives me. In those instances, of which there are many, I'd give a slight edge to my own racquet."

Serves - Score: 85

From spin and control to racquet head speed and power, the Babolat Pure Strike 18x20 offered a little bit of everything to the Tennis Warehouse playtesters' serves. Hannah had no complaints. She raved, "This racquet providing a good amount of power and pop on my serve, and I found it easy to maintain control and spin. It was easy for me to swing and get good wrist snap. I was having success with my flat, slice and kick serves."

Jason was impressed with the Pure Strike 18x20. He compared it to the 16x19, saying, "I was hitting my serves with nice pop and control, and I wasn't missing many RPMs compared to the 16x19 model, which surprised me. I was just getting solid results when serving with this racquet."

"It was tough determining if I served or returned better with this racquet!" exclaimed Brittany . "I could generate some serious heat down the middle of the service box or change it up and slice the serve out wide to pull my opponents off the court. The Pure Strike 18x20 was also forgiving on second serves. I could be a little tentative and still have positive results."

Chris continued to play well with this racquet. He said, "I liked the spin and control I had. I was hitting my slice serve very well and could add some pace to that shot without losing consistency. I felt confident going after both first and second serves. I found I could be aggressive and still keep my consistency up. Compared to my regular racquet I was down a tad on speed when giving my serve the beans, but since I tend to use spin and direction more it wasn't much of a factor."

Returns - Score: 91

The TW playtesters found the Pure Strike 18x20 to be a weapon on the return thanks to the fast and solid feel. Jason actually liked the 18x20 version more than the 16x19 version on returns. He said, "The Pure Strike 18x20 was very solid on returns. The racquet didn't feel like it got pushed around too much, even against some bigger serves, and I was able to get decent depth on my returns. I felt like I could swing slightly more freely and fully compared to the Pure Strike 16x19 because of the lower powered response. It allowed me a greater margin of error."

Brittany loves to hit returns, and the Pure Strike 18x20 was a weapon in her hands. She said, "The Pure Strike 18x20 swung fast and was stable when I was returning even the hardest of returns. I liked having the ability to redirect my opponent's power on first serves and create my own power on second serves, which allowed me to always be on the offensive. I felt confident knowing where my return was going to go."

"I returned very well with this racquet," said Chris . "I just felt very connected to what I could do with the ball. I was driving the ball with a lot of confidence, chipping it well and even going for a little more than usual. I definitely had more control than I have with my Pure Drive Plus. Even when I missed a shot I had a solid idea of how much I'd overhit as soon as the ball left the racquet."

Hannah was able to be aggressive on her return, starting off points with confidence. She wrapped up the playtest by saying, "Just like when I return with the 16x19, I could shorten up my swings, take a step inside the baseline and get a good powerful response to any type of serve without any shock to my arm. Fast, accurate and comfortable returns were a big plus side to this racquet."

Overall - Score: 89

Brittany - "I liked the power, feel and maneuverability."

Hannah - "The Pure Strike 18x20 is a comfortable racquet that offered feel, power, connection to the ball and maneuverability. I really liked how the 18x20 string pattern allowed me to swing completely through and around the ball. When I was in a good position, had a specific target and made clean contact I was able to produced a shot that the 16x19 version didn't offer."

Chris - "I loved this racquet, and I played very well with it. The Pure Strike 18x20 has great control, is maneuverable and has plenty of spin, and I was totally dialed in on my slice backhand. Need I say more?"

Jason - "Excellent feel and control. It's stable for its weight class."

Brittany - "I would have liked a tad more spin potential, but that's a personal preference."

Hannah - "The smaller sweetspot required me to be more precise than my current game/training schedule allows, so I found it more difficult to be versatile and adapt, especially from the baseline."

Chris - "As I said on the Pure Strike 16x19 review, a Plus length option would be nice."

Jason - "The Pure Strike 18x20 is slightly less forgiving than the 16x19 version. It also doesn't have as much power."

Comparing the racquet to others they've tried, our testers said:

Brittany - "Compared to the previous version, the feel and the sweetspot were improved. Both were great in terms of maneuverability. I think this update also offered a little more free power than the previous version. It plays like the Pure Strike 16x19, but with less spin potential. Other racquets that are comparable are the Wilson Blade 18x20 and the Prince Textreme Tour 100P."

Hannah - "As expected the feel of the Pure Strike 18x20 reflects that of the Pure Strike 16x19. As far as comfort levels from all areas of the court, I'd say they are even. The Pure Strike 16x19 offers effortless spin, and higher levels of forgiveness were needed with the Pure Strike 18x20 when I was on the move or taking time away from my opponent. It is worth noting that if I were on a more disciplined practice schedule I think in many ways I would prefer the 18x20 version as a weapon that I could fully utilize."

Chris - "The Pure Strike 18x20 offers more control and feel from the stringbed than the Pure Strike 16x19, and I felt more confident when attacking with it. This racquet offers a lower powered, more control oriented response when compared to a Babolat Pure Drive or Pure Aero. I also found it to play with more comfort and feel."

Jason - "The Pure Strike 18x20 is everything I love about the Pure Strike 16x19 but in a more control oriented model. If I was feeling really confident and swinging out on all my shots, this would be my go-to. If it was just another regular day at the office, the 16x19 allows me to hit with more power with less effort."

Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 tennis racquet review

Here is my review of the Babolat Pure Strike VS tennis racquet (2022), a "control" racquet for good players who are rather powerful.

I tested the racquet with a Head Sonic Pro string, tension 23 Kg.

The racquet will be available at the end of January 2022.

Here are the characteristics of the Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022, for an unstrung racquet :

• Length : 68.5 cm

The grip size

The grip of the racquet I tested was in size 3 (4 3/8), my usual size, however I was surprised by the size of the grip which bothered me a bit because I found it rather large, more like a size 4 (4 1/2).

I also had in hand a Babolat Pure Aero Rafa, size 3, which gave me the same impression.

If purchasing a Babolat racquet, I recommend that you check the grip size to make sure it fits you.

Protection band of the frame

Upon receiving the racquet, I immediately noticed the particularly present frame protection band, interesting for protecting the frame when the racquet hits the ground.

The protective band covers the upper half of the frame.

Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022 power level

The Babolat Pure Strike VS, without being one of the hardest racquets to play, is still in a demanding and low power racquet category.

On my topspin backhand, which is my best shot, I had a good level of power and control.

On my forehand, I had overall decent power at the start of the session, but the weight of the racquet a bit high for me (310 g unstrung) combined with the relatively low power of the racquet, meant that over of training, I found it difficult to produce power.

On the serve, as on the forehand, I had decent power, but I would be more comfortable on this shot with a racquet that gives more power easily.

To sum up when it comes to the power of the Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022, it is clearly a control oriented tennis racquet, intended for players of a good level, who are able to produce power with their technique and their physique and who are looking for a racquet with which they can let go of the arm without being afraid of making mistakes.

Babolat Pure Strike VS and spins

Regarding the backhand slice, I had excellent feelings in terms of touch and control.

On my top spin backhand it was okay, and I had more difficulty with top spin on the forehand and on the serve.

The 626 cm² head size and 16x20 string pattern reduce the space between the strings, which explains these sensations.

Access to top spin will be fine for players who use light top spin, on the other hand, be careful if you are looking for very easy access to top spin.

Maneuverability and stability for the Pure Strike VS 2022

The racquet is relatively head light, with its balance located at 31 cm, which helps to give the racquet a good maneuverability.

The average head size of 626 cm² and the rather thin profile of the frame also help to have maneuverability.

The racquet is therefore easy to swing and stable, but you have to be sure that you can play with a 310g racquet.

Indeed, playing with a raquet whose weight is too heavy for you, regardless of its other characteristics, will produce a lack of maneuverability and swing speed.

Some may find a little lack of stability due to the fairly light racquet head.

In this case, it will be possible to add lead tape, provided that you can play with this additional weight.

Comfort and forgiveness for the Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022

I found the Babolat Pure Strike VS comfortable, yet less smooth than what I felt with the Babolat Pure Strike 100.

The sensations for me are different from those we have with other Babolat Pure Strikes; the vibration damping is correct but less marked than with the other models, we find sensations a bit old-fashioned.

Regarding tolerance, one should not expect extreme indulgence from a racquet with a 626 cm² head size, however, I found it to be correct given this reduced head size and the slightly narrowed 16x20 string pattern.

Summary of my review of the Babolat Pure Strike VS version 2022

The Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022, while not the hardest to play tennis racquet, falls into the category of control oriented racquets, which do not give much power.

It is intended for good, powerful players who play flat or with slight top spin, who are looking for control and a little old-fashioned feel in terms of vibration damping.

The maneuverability is very good, access to top spin is average, the racquet is comfortable and it offers good forgiveness for this type of racquet.

Players I would advise the Babolat Pure Strike VS 2022

I would recommend this racquet to players :

• of a good level, mainly advanced players
• who are able to play without problems with a relatively heavy racket (310 g),
• who have rather ample and loose swings,
• with a powerful game style, flat or light  top spin, who seek a good level of control,
• who want a maneuverable "control" oriented racquet with correct forgiveness.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Omsk

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.
