Tenerife is known for its natural beauty and for being home to the tallest point in Spain – Mount Teide. Teide is the world’s third highest volcanic structure and it has a height of 7,500 meters, if measured from the ocean floor.

Due to the volcanic nature of the island, there are many beautiful black sand beaches in Tenerife. Some of them are more remote while others are located near big cities.

I spent one week on the island, searching for the best beaches and tourist attractions. After visiting some unique and breathtaking black beaches in Tenerife, I decided to share with you my favorites. Here they are!

1. Best black sand beaches in Tenerife

1.1 playa de los gigantes.

I have to admit that Playa de los Guios , also known as Playa de los Gigantes is one of my favorite beaches in Tenerife. Bordered by tall cliffs, this beautiful black sand beach is about 100 meters long.

From the beach, you can admire the majestic cliffs. This black sand beach in Tenerife is perfect for swimming, but be careful, sometimes the currents are powerful.

There is a lifeguard, showers and changing rooms at Los Gigantes Beach . If you get hungry, you can choose one of the many nearby bars and restaurants.

1.2 Playa de Benijo

If you’re looking for the best black sand beaches in Tenerife, you have to visit Benijo Beach . This beach is located in the northeastern part of the island, near one of the most incredible villages on the island – Taganana .

What makes Playa de Benijo special are the huge boulders rising from the sea and the tall cliffs guarding the beach. The best time to visit this place is at sunset.

Playa de Benijo is one of the unspoilt beaches in Tenerife. There are no beach bars, restaurants, sunbeds, lifeguards, showers or toilets here. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the beauty that Mother Nature created.

1.3 Playa El Bollullo

Located near Puerto de la Cruz, Playa El Bollullo is one of the best black sand beaches in northern Tenerife. It’s a place known mainly by locals, a hidden gem yet unknown to tourists.

To get to Bollullo Beach, you’ll first have to drive on a narrow road and then go down a set of stairs. There is a restaurant on the beach and another one nearby, in case you get thirsty or hungry.

I loved Bolloullo Beach because it’s a bit more remote and the views are pretty spectacular. It’s the perfect choice for those looking to escape the chaos of big cities.

1.4 Playa Jardin

Another beautiful black sand beach in northern Tenerife is Playa Jardin. This beach is actually composed of 3 smaller beaches – Playa del Castillo, Playa Chica and Playa Maria Jimenez.

Out of the three, I loved the most Maria Jimenez Beach. In the backdrop you can admire a row of colorful houses and the mountains. We stopped for about an hour to take photos and even if the weather was terrible, the view was still beautiful.

1.5 Playa de Fanabe

If you’re looking for black sand beaches in southern Tenerife, you have to stop at Playa de Fanabe. We discovered this beach on our first day in Tenerife and we saw the most incredible sunset here.

The beach is about 600 meters long, perfect for a relaxing walk at sunset. There are countless restaurants and souvenir shops nearby, making it the perfect destination for those who want to go to a beach with all the facilities.

If you have time, make sure to visit the nearby Playa del Duque . This is a golden sand beach, perfect for swimming. It’s a bit smaller than Playa de Fanabe, but equally beautiful.

1.6 Playa de Las Gaviotas

Located near the more popular Playa de Las Teresitas , Las Gaviotas Beach is one the best beaches near Santa Cruz de Tenerife. You can reach this beach by car, but first make sure to stop for a few minutes at Mirador Gaviotas.

From this viewpoint, you can see both the black sand Las Gaviotas Beach and the golden sand Las Teresitas Beach. It’s one of the best viewpoints on the island!

If you’re planning to visit Las Gaviotas, keep in mind that nudism is accepted here. There are no facilities at this beach, making it the perfect place to reconnect with nature.

1.7 Playa Amarilla

Are you looking for hidden beaches in Tenerife? Visit Playa Amarilla , one of the natural wonders in Tenerife. This beach is only about 50 meters long and is covered in black pebbles. However, you can lay your towel directly on the curved golden rocks.

Amarilla Beach is an excellent spot for both swimming and snorkeling. The water is crystal-clear. There are no facilities at this beach except for a small beach bar that sells drinks.

If you’re looking for unique places in Tenerife, add Playa Amarilla to your itinerary. You’ll love the rock formations here.

1.8 Playa de Punta Larga

Located just a short drive away from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Punta Larga beach is one of the best black sand beaches in Tenerife. It’s not very crowded and the water is perfect for swimming.

This beach has all the amenities you need. It has showers, toilets and there are lots of restaurants and bars nearby. If you’re looking for a beach with beautiful views, this is the one!

1.9 Playa del Socorro

Located in Los Realejos, Playa del Socorro is one of the only two beaches in Tenerife adapted for disabled people. This beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag, meaning that it has all the facilities needed and clean water.

Here you can find showers, toilets, changing rooms and lifeguards. The beach also has a few areas with WiFi.

Socorro beach is a popular destination for surf enthusiasts. The beach is also perfect for swimming, when the waves aren’t too big. This is one of the best beaches in Tenerife, a place that has all the facilities you’ll need.

1.10 Playa de la Arena

This beautiful Tenerife black sand beach is located in Puerto de Santiago. This beach is relatively small but is one of the most popular destinations in the area, together with the incredible Charco el Diablo .

At Arena Beach, you’ll find sunbeds for rent, showers, toilets and lots of restaurants nearby. Since this is a popular spot, I recommend arriving here early in the morning if you want to rent a sunbed.

While in the area, stop for an hour at the nearby Charco el Diablo . The volcanic rock formations here form incredible shapes and natural pools, perfect to refresh yourself.

2. Why are the beaches in Tenerife covered in black sand?

Most of the beaches in Tenerife are black sand beaches due to the volcanos in the area. Over the years, due to many volcanic eruptions, the ocean crushed the volcanic rocks into fine black sand.

There are also a few golden sand beaches in Tenerife such as Las Teresitas Beach and El Duque Beach . The sand here has been imported from Sahara, to make the beaches more appealing to tourists. All the natural beaches in Tenerife are covered in black sand.

3. Where to stay in Tenerife

There are thousands of hotels in Tenerife and finding the perfect one, to meet your criteria might be challenging. That’s why I’ve been searching for the best accommodation on the island, for every budget. Here are my recommendations.

• Budget – Atlantic Holiday Hotel – amazing ocean view, beautiful modern studio, good location, friendly staff, good amenities
• Mid-Range – Labranda Bahia – beautiful pools, good location, spacious rooms and good services, friendly staff, all-inclusive
• Luxury – Fantasia Bahia – perfect for couples and families, excellent services, all-inclusive, huge & modern rooms, beautiful pools

4. How to get around Tenerife

To explore Tenerife, I recommend renting a car. It gives you the freedom to spend as much time as you like in each place you visit. We rented our car from Oasis for about 35 EUR per day and we were very satisfied with their services.

Tenerife also has a good system of public transport. There are many buses running between the big cities of the island.

5. Final thoughts

I hope that I’ve inspired you to visit at least some of these incredible black sand beaches in Tenerife. Scattered from south to north, these beaches will definitely steal your heart.

While in Tenerife, make sure to also visit Mount Teide , the top attraction on the island. I recommend buying your cable car tickets in advance, to make sure that you catch a spot on your preferred date.

Temperatures have dropped here in London.  I don’t mind the cold if I am wrapped up warm.  These old English houses though are pretty to look at but completely draughty.  I have the heating cranked up but am still feeling cold. The whole experience has me dreaming of our holiday on the black sand beaches in Tenerife. Here is our pick of 20 of the best beaches in Tenerife, a Spanish island blessed with great weather for an easy escape for winter sun. With many black sand beaches, Tenerife is great for a family holiday. Of course, there are white sand beaches in Tenerife too (with sugar soft golden sand imported from the Sahara!).

Why The Beaches of Tenerife?

A couple of years ago, before the children started taking skiing seriously, we went to Tenerife during February half-term break.  The average high temperature in Tenerife is in the low 70’s which is pretty good for a quick break from England for winter sun in Europe .  Not only is the flight time only 4 hours from London but also there are plenty of family-friendly things to do in Tenerife, like Tenerife black sand beaches.

What Color is the Sand in Tenerife?

The original Tenerife sand is black and so you get the Tenerife black sand beaches. The other type of Tenerife sand is golden sand from the Sahara imported for people who don’t like the black sand beaches Tenerife originally had.

Why Are There Black Sand Beaches in Tenerife?

The black sand beaches in Tenerife are the result of a volcanic basaltic coastline meeting the erosion of the sea.  The island has a coastline of 250 miles of which 40 miles are sand beaches in Tenerife.  Chances are you will find a Tenerife black sand beach that you will love. In terms of Tenerife beaches, black sand is the original version.

Most of Tenerife’s golden sand beaches are man-made.  They were created by importing soft yellow sand from the Sahara.  The yellow sand beaches are in the more touristy areas on the south of the island.

In fact, the famous Playa del Duque started off as a black sand beach but got covered up by golden sand in the 1990’s. Maybe you can convince your kids to keep digging until they get to the original Tenerife beach black sand ? That should keep them busy.

Why Kids Love A Black Sand Beach in Tenerife

I find black sand is a bit stickier and less grainy than yellow sand.  My children absolutely loved the black beaches Tenerife had to offer though  They filled up the Tenerife black sand holes with water and pretended they were Peppa Pig jumping in muddy puddles.  The children looked a fright once they were finished playing in the black beach Tenerife style.

On the plus side though, all the black sand Tenerife has washes off and it was definitely easier to spot black sand caught in little crevices than golden sand on a little sun-kissed body.

Also, black sand in Tenerife is heavier than yellow sand and brushes off easier when it is dry!

Your choice of black beaches Tenerife offers really depends on if you have kids with you.  An isolated black sand beach in Tenerife will give you that Robinson Crusoe feeling that you may not find on the rest of this touristy island. On the other hand, you may not want to lug food, drinks, toys etc, to some of the best beaches in Tenerife

The best black sand beaches Tenerife offers for kids

• Playa Jardin in Puerta de la Cruz is a Blue Flag black beach Tenerife locals love. This beach is sheltered and great for kids. It has lots of facilities as well as a mix of locals and tourists.
• Playa de las Arenas is another black sand beach in the south of Tenerife located near Los Gigantes. It is a Blue Flag Beach and the kids will love exploring the rock pools.
• Playa de Troya  is on the Costa Adeje on the South coast.  This black sand beach in Tenerife is in the Las Americas tourist section of the island. Although Las Americas is known as party central in Tenerife, during the day Playa de Troya is a family-friendly Blue Flag beach.
• Playa San Juan is in the South of Tenerife in Guia de Isora, a small fishing village. The beach is small and sheltered and so good for kids. This Blue Flag beach is less touristy than other beaches because the area has more apartments than hotels.
• Playa San Marcos is located on the North Coast. It backs onto a little fishing village and is sheltered enough for kids to play safely.
• Playa de la Martianez is located on the North Coast near Puerto de la Cruz. Although a small black sand beach in Tenerife, your kids will LOVE the Lago Martianez which is a waterpark that combines pools and art. Yes, really.
• Also on the north coast near Icod de los Vinos, Playa San Marco is a popular black sand beach Tenerife visitors love. It’s family-friendly with calm waters and sun loungers for rent.

If you want the novelty of a black beach Tenerife has got lots of great options. Not every Tenerife black sand beach though may be suitable for families. For example, on some of these black sand beaches Tenerife permits nudist sun bathing.

• Playa de los Gigantes is a small beach on the West Coast.
• At Playa Bollullo in La Orotava , you will find your escape from the crowds. However, there are no facilities and the waves are strong so it’s not great with little kids. Nearby there is a nudist beach in Tenerife.
• Playa Las Gaviotas (near the golden sand beach of Las Teresitas ) is also a nudist beach in Tenerife.
• Continuing with the nudist beach in Tenerife theme, Los Patos is an enormously popular black sand beach located in the Orotava valley in Tenerife. At low tide, the beach is very wide. It’s not easy to access but has a spectacular setting amongst banana plantations, cliffs and the sea.
• Playa Socorro  has attained Blue Flag status. One of the top beaches in Tenerife, it is popular with surfers. The waves may be too much with younger children.
• Roque Bermejo in Eastern Tenerife is not the easiest to visit. You will need either a boat or trek for two hours. Personally, I think that is way too much effort in getting to a Tenerife black beach.

We didn’t limit ourselves to just black beaches in Tenerife! In terms of beaches Tenerife is blessed so it’s a perfect place to explore different sandy options.

Getting to Bollulo Beach involves driving down a narrow road and then descending a set of stairs. Dramatic cliffs that add to the scenery make it even more worthy of a visit. Get there by parking at one of the two restaurants on the beach, or take a 45-minute walk through the banana plantations on a coastal path from Puerto de la Cruz.

As with most beaches on the island’s north end, the waves and tides are quite strong and the water isn’t really suitable for swimming. Sun loungers are available for hire.

Playa Jardin

Playa Jardin, or “Garden Beach” is another exotic black sand beach in northern Tenerife near the city of Puerto de la Cruz. It’s actually composed of three smaller beaches – Playa Chica, Playa Maria Jimenez, and Playa del Castillo.

Massive cliffs towering up to 800 meters high earn it the name Acantilados de Los Gigantes which means “Cliffs of the Giants.” Other than by boat, the beach offers the best view of the gigantic towering cliffs.

It’s located on the island’s sunny west coast about 45 minutes by car from Reina Sofia, Tenerife’s southern airport. The holiday areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are only 30 kilometers away. Over time, the town has merged with the resorts of Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena. The three areas are close enough to be walkable.

The water surrounding the ebony sand is crystal clear and the waves are light. Los Gigantes is a relatively quiet resort town with restaurants, shops, cafes, and family-friendly bars.

Playa de Las Gaviotas

Located close to the popular Playa de Las Teresitas, the black sand beach at Las Gaviotas Beach is reachable by car. On the way, be sure to stop by the lookout point Mirador Gaviotas for stunning views. One of the best viewpoints on the island, the iconic tower was created in 1986 as a failed attempt to build a flower clock.

Playa de Benijo

Located in the northern part of Tenerife close to the Anaga Rural Park area, Playa de Benijo is a black sand beach that’s a favorite for locals and a hidden gem for tourists. Playa Amarilla

One of Tenerife’s natural wonders, Playa Amarilla is a black sand pebbly beach nestled in the craggy cliffs of Coasta del Silencio on the south side of Tenerife. It’s a small beach, only about 50 meters long, and you have to look closely or you may even miss it. The unique curved rocks make natural chairs to lay your towel across.

The water is rough but crystal clear at Playa Amarilla. The rocky cove is popular for both swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Two ladders lead down into the water. The waves at high tide are powerful, so beware. Wearing water shoes is advised since the bottom is quite rocky.

There are no facilities such as restrooms, but there’s a little beach bar on the far side for drinks and snacks. You can park your car and walk to this tiny beach.

Playa del Socorro

Situated in Los Realejos, Playa del Socorro is one of North Tenerife’s best black sand beaches. It earned the title of Blue Flag Beach because of accessibility, enjoyment, and amenities for comfort such as showers, reserved parking, and walkways and ramps for guests with reduced mobility.

With 200 meters of parking, this beach even has Wi-Fi hotspots and an entertainment center with games and a snack bar. Beach bars for drinks and snacks are nearby.

Playa de la Arena, Tenerife – Beach, Things to Do & Hotels

Playa de la Arena is located on the west coast of Tenerife, just south of the nearby resorts of Los Gigantes and Puerto de Santiago. Staying in Playa de la Arena gives visitors the chance to explore all three local resorts, as well as the surrounding area. 

The island of La Gomera can be seen from the black sand beach , which is one of Tenerife’s best. Travellers come from all over the world to see its volcanic black sand, swim in the sea and soak up the Canarian sunshine. 

As the quietest of the three resorts, Playa de la Arena has a more laid-back atmosphere than Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes . It’s a great place for keen walkers as well as beach lovers to stay, as there is easy access to the coastal path.

Playa de la Arena has a pretty, palm-lined promenade overlooking the clean, Blue Flag beach, and there are plenty of relaxed cafes, bars and restaurants here to sample. The sights and sounds of people partying all night will not disturb your holiday here. 

If the idea of staying in a peaceful resort with easy access to both neighbouring towns as well as other island attractions, Playa de la Arena could make the perfect base for your Canary Islands stay.

Things to Do in Playa de la Arena

Enjoy one of tenerife’s finest black sand beaches.

The beach in Playa de la Arena is one of the best beaches on the island of Tenerife , and as such it’s popular with both locals and tourists. Featuring natural black volcanic sand, it has been awarded Blue Flag status for safety and cleanliness. There is generally plenty of space here, although it can become crowded during peak season weekends.

Playa de la Arena beach is simple to access on foot or by bus, hire car or taxi. There is a bus stop and taxi rank very close by as well as a car park. Other amenities at the beach include toilets, showers and lifeguard services, and there are sun loungers and parasols available for rent. 

In addition to sunbathing and swimming, visitors can enjoy exploring the underwater world of this area by snorkelling or scuba diving. There are also magnificent views over La Gomera island from the sands and palm-lined promenade. 

Enjoying a meal at one of the promenade’s best restaurants is also an absolute must. See below for our recommendations.

For a change of scenery, holidaymakers can also sample the beaches, cafes, shops, bars and restaurants in neighbouring Puerto de Santiago – which lies immediately north – and Los Gigantes, a little further on.

Tickle Your Tastebuds at the Best Local Eateries

This lovely cafe is located close to the coast and where Playa de la Arena meets Puerto de Santiago. Specialising in Mediterranean and European cuisine, past guests call it a ‘hidden gem’ that very much deserves its rave reviews. The meat, fish and vegetarian dishes come highly recommended, as does Sunday lunch and the desserts. 

Domingo Restaurante Terraza

Located right by Playa de la Arena’s black sand beach is Domingo restaurant and terrace. This place serves up Spanish food as well as fish dishes, steak and chips and other Mediterranean and European fare. It’s one of the best spots in the area in which to sample delicious food with a sea view.

Also close to the beach, Casa Pepe offers local, Spanish, European and Mediterranean fare. Visitors praise the attentive service from Pepe and his team just as much as the fabulous food. Dishes offer great value for money and highlights include paella, seafood pasta, lamb, chicken and Canarian potatoes as well as the tapas.

Pepi Vintage Room

Pepi Vintage Room Tenerife is also positioned near the beach and is the local go-to for authentic Italian food. The ‘awesome’ Neapolitan style pizza is a favourite, while the pasta, meat and fish dishes are also superb. Great local beers and tasty, colourful cocktails are also highly praised, as are the pleasing ocean views.

Enjoy a Walk Along the Coastal Path

The well-trodden coastal path connects Playa de la Arena with Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, both of which can be reached by heading north. To the south there is the local village of Alcala , which has a busy market on Mondays between 9am and 2pm. Those who wander further south can also visit Playa San Juan , which lies beyond Alcala.

Spend the Day in Los Gigantes or Puerto de Santiago

One of the highlights of staying in Playa de la Arena is that it gives the opportunity of discovering the two nearby resorts as well as the one you’re based in. Both have delightful attractions of their own, including the natural saltwater swimming pool, Piscina Natural Acantilado De Los Gigantes, which is positioned where Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes meet. This provides a stunning setting for a swim, although it can be dangerous during stormy weather. If you plan to take a dip, do wear beach shoes to protect you from the rocky bottom.  

Los Gigantes

In Los Gigantes, there is the Mirador Archipenque viewpoint ( location ), which has a cafe and offers panoramic views over the Los Gigantes cliffs and ocean. This can be reached by heading uphill from the town centre. The harbour, packed with boats, is also a popular spot, and there are lots of places to eat and drink there. Whale and dolphin spotting cruises can also be taken, and these depart from Los Gigantes harbour.  

Puerto de Santiago 

Round off the perfect day in Los Gigantes by booking a table at The Fisherman’s Inn . This restaurant offers diners superb, sweeping views over the ocean as they dine on food that’s both flavourful and beautifully presented. Seafood and Mediterranean cuisine is offered alongside a range of international dishes, and this is a truly memorable spot from which to watch the sunset. 

Take a Day Trip Further Afield

For those wishing to discover those parts of Tenerife that lie beyond the three resorts, there are several easy day trip options to consider. You can find out more about the options and how to get there by visiting the tourist office opposite the beach at Calle la Iglesia, 64, 38690 Santiago del Teide.

The village of Masca is a magical place, set among a magnificent mountainous natural landscape featuring forest and waterfalls as well as local flora and fauna. 

Vilaflor is a popular stop en route with hikers heading to Teide National Park. As the highest Spanish town, this Alpine-like spot is surrounded by fir forest.

Perennially popular with walkers and trekkers, Teide National Park is packed with pretty wildflowers, volcanic scenery and more pine forests.

La Orotava 

La Orotava is around an hour and 10 minutes away, and is one for fans of history and architecture. It features some lovely old churches and convents as well as majestic Renaissance mansions.

Around 30 minutes beyond La Oratava is Tenerife’s capital, the port city of Santa Cruz . This is a must for fans of retail therapy, and also features attractive plazas plus baroque, colonial and neoclassical architecture and interesting museums.

This Thai-themed water park is located in Costa Adeje, and is particularly popular with families. It claims to be the world’s best water park, making it a place well worth visiting.

BEST – Landmar Playa La Arena

With panoramic views over the coastline, the four star Landmar is a beachfront property offering guests a range of impressive facilities. This sunny, light-filled hotel is just 50 yards from the beach, and standard or deluxe rooms and suites feature private balconies, air-con and satellite TV. As well as the pool complex, there is a tennis court and mini golf, and there is also an airy restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean.

MID-RANGE – Allegro Isora

Offering three outdoor pools, a water slide and a kids’ club, the Allegro Isora is ideal for families. Grown-ups, meanwhile, will love the fitness centre and spa with a sauna and treatment rooms. The range of air-conditioned accommodation includes rooms sleeping between one and four guests. Each has an outdoor terrace or balcony, satellite TV and a lounge area with seating. The complex also has a restaurant, snack bar, tennis court, lounge bar and entertainment programme.

BUDGET – Arena Nest Hostel

The Arena Nest Hostel is a great pick for budget travellers who holiday solo or as a couple or group. Shared facilities include a kitchen, lounge and shower rooms, and accommodation is in doubles or dorms. Hairdryers and free WiFi throughout are provided. The property is positioned close to Playa de la Arena beach as well as the resort of Puerto de Santiago. Help with booking day trips or onward travel can be provided via the tour desk. 

SELF-CATERING – “Atis”

If you travel as a family or group who want to self-cater, we highly recommend booking Atis. It’s a contemporary, luxuriously appointed holiday home with three outdoor seating areas – one of which boasts a sea view. There is also a barbecue provided. Inside you’ll find three bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus a dishwasher, washing machine and flatscreen TV. For when no-one feels like cooking, there is also a restaurant on site. 

The Canary islands enjoy a sunny climate all year round, which is why Tenerife is among the most popular winter sun destinations. Even during winter, some sunshine and mild temperatures can be expected. 

Playa de la Arena’s weather ranges between warm and hot, and is mostly dry. There are occasional windy spells. Summer highs during June , July, August and September range between 28 and 31°C and winter lows are generally around 14-16°C.

Playa de la Arena Nightlife

The Blarney Stone is popular with those who do wish to sample some low-key nightlife while staying in the resort. Brits in particular are fond of this Irish style pub that serves a great Sunday roast complete with Yorkshire pudding. It serves a good range of beers, cocktails and other beverages, and is the ideal place to watch your footballing favourites in action. 

Getting Around

Getting around Playa de la Arena and the surrounding area is easy, as there is a bus stop right above the beach. Routes 473 and 477 are the most frequent services, and will transport you northwards to Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes or south towards Playa Las Americas. The 477 terminates at Costa Adeje.

Other local bus routes include the 325, 461, 462, 493, and 494. These are less frequent, but they can take you to other places on the island. You can find out more about their routes here . 

Playa de la Arena to Playa de las Americas

The 473 will take you to Playa de las Americas , and the Zentral Center bus stop there is the best place to get off. You could also travel to this large resort by taxi, at a cost of around 35-40 Euros.

Playa de la Arena to Siam Park

You can also travel to Siam park by taxi or bus. The taxi trip each way costs about 35-40 Euros. Bus numbers 473 and 477 will also take you to Costa Adeje bus station from which you can reach the park in about 10 minutes on foot. The 477 is faster than the 473, and as Costa Adeje station is its final destination, this is the best choice.

A beautiful beach with soft black sand and large rocks with plenty rocks pools in the evening, this beach does have some strong tides so you do see alot of surfers especially when you walk further up where there is less sand and mainly rocks, we loved watching the tides come in and hit the rocks spraying water everywhere, but you have to be very careful if you have children or aren't a strong swimmer, the sand is surprisingly very soft, this beach was closest to our hotel which was best tenerife hotel but a short walk up the broad walk there is another sand beach but again strong tides, the beach we found best suited for our little tots was playa de las vista a short drive away near the shipping docks which was just perfect, it is amazing to see the amount of beaches on this small island and how much they vary from one another, love tenerife

The first part of beach is rocky, you need walk along beach further down, then you will find a long sand beach, some hotel just in front of beach and easy for little kids. a lot of cheap shop and restaurants along beach, also expansive shops around rock café area.

A real mixture of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. Varied from high end to basic Lots going on Lovely beach

Excellent weather, like summer at home, not too crowded, hotel accommodation excellent, thanks to Park Santiago 4 and trip provider TUI. Can recommend Loro Parque, like they do all over the island, a nice one day trip. A mountain excursion might also be included, good for stretching your legs, thank you.

Our hotel does a free bus ride to playa de Las America's. The beach is a mix of sand and ground lava rock it looks grey . There seems like looks of water sports going on and boat rides and lots of ticket sellers. Lots of bars restaurants and shops. Too many people and to built up for us. If you like it busy you will enjoy. Not many public toilets the ones near the mercadona are ok 20 cents to use. Lots of people with mobility scooters even double ones. Lots of street sellers selling fake goods. The views are lovely out to sea. Glad we went but won't be going again.

Tenerife is a great destination for a sunny holiday, but the island is of volcanic origin, which means that there are many beaches with black volcanic sand.

The south is where most of the tourists visiting Tenerife are staying, so the beaches here are among the top beaches in Tenerife in terms of facilities, access to shops, bars and restaurants and also activities for children.

Tenerife is known for its black sand beaches since it's a volcanic island, but you'll also be able to find some nice beaches with golden sand, usually in the south part of the island.

Playa Las Vistas is probably the most popular one in Los Cristianos and it's a white sand beach, man made, with all the facilities you need. 

There are lots of shops nearby, Vista Sur shopping center is just a few steps away, so it's a really great beach to spend your days since you have everything you may need in close proximity.

The water is shallow near the shoreline, so it's great for kids; there aren't many waves and there are some inflatables in the water (but we are not sure if they are there all year long or how much it costs to use them).

Playa Torviscas is another great beach in Costa Adeje , with calm and clean water, ideal for swimming. It is a great spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather and it's situated in a more upmarket area. You have many other beaches nearby, like Playa Fanabe, Playa del Duque and Puerto Colon beach.

We really like this beach, with its clear and calm water, sometimes with a turquoise shade close to the shoreline. It is one of the top beaches in Tenerife for families with small children (in our opinion). You also have inflatables in the water, which will keep the kids busy for a few hours and give them something to do, while you can enjoy a beer or a cocktail. We fell like this beach has a more relaxed vibe compared to other nearby beaches, but you still have plenty of restaurants and shops in the proximity.

Playa del Duque is one of the most popular beaches in the south of Tenerife in the Costa Adeje resort.

It offers safe access to the ocean and you'll find all the usual amenities like sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets and also a beach bar. 

Playa del Duque is a fairly large beach and you can also stroll on the promenade along the beach, where there are lots of benches to rest and admire the view from different viewpoints.

The surrounding area close to Playa del Duque is home to some of the best luxury hotels in Tenerife like Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort , Hotel Vincci Selección La Plantación del Sur and Iberostar Grand El Mirador .

The coast in the area of El Medano is much windier compared to the south, but you do get some spectacular views and long natural beaches to walk and even practice water sports, such as kite surfing or surfing.

The town beach is usually busy and full of tourists, but you only have to walk for a few minutes to find a more quiet and remote spot if you want to escape the crowds.

This beach is not in the south of the island, but it's definitely one of the best white sand beaches in Tenerife (the sand is actually more of a golden color).

As we said in the beginning, Tenerife doesn't get many natural beaches with light-colored sand, so Las Teresitas is a man-made beach, with sand imported here from Africa, beautiful palm trees, luxurious sand beds and all the facilities that you can think of.

Playa Las Teresitas is popular and gets full with locals, especially during the summer months, although we've spent warm and sunny days here even in winter and we've even gone swimming in January, February or March and the water has been quite pleasant. 

Playa Las Teresitas gets quite busy during the warm weekend and during holidays and it even happens that the Police cut off access to the beach by car because the car park gets full, so if you plan to come here during a summer weekend or any other holiday like Easter, our advice is to arrive early in the morning, before the crowds. 

Playa de los Cristianos is actually one of our favorite beaches in Tenerife for swimming and sunbathing as well, especially during the winter months.

On our last visit to Tenerife, we stayed right next to this beach and we enjoyed our holiday so much, since the beach is very safe for swimming, with all the facilities available and many restaurants and bars close by. 

We feel like it has a more relaxed vibe than Playa Las Vistas and Playa del Duque for example, although if you'd like a more vibrant nightlife, we suggest staying closer to one of those beaches instead. 

We know than many people don't like the black sand beaches that are specific to Tenerife, but there are a few beautiful ones, that should not be missed.

We actually love these beaches that are so typical to Tenerife, as they usually have a wild vibe and come with dramatic scenery, very different from the beaches situated in the resorts.

Playa La Arena is probably the most beautiful and popular black sand beach in the south of Tenerife.

Although swimming at this beach is considered dangerous (and it's often forbidden by the red flag put up by the lifeguards), the dark black sand, the palm trees and the view of La Gomera, all make this a wonderful place to spend the day. 

Puerto de la Cruz is the best place to stay in Tenerife if you don't want to be in the south and Playa Jardin is one of the many reasons why you should at least visit this place during your holiday.

The layout of the beach was designed by Cesar Manrique and there are lots of elements that make this place so special: a waterfall, a bridge, flowers, and palm trees.

Best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz

This is one of Tenerife's best beaches, wild and remote and it's situated in the North, inside Anaga Rural Park.

Playa de Benijo is super popular among photographers and it's one of those picture-perfect places that you see in magazines. The currents and waves are usually strong at this beach, so swimming is dangerous and not really recommended.

During the summer it gets a fair share of visitors, but it's quiet and empty for the rest of the year. You have to walk for around 15 minutes to get to this beach (by going down some stairs), so it's not a beach with easy access since there's no parking either and you have to leave your car on the side of the road.

The all-time prettiest and nicest beach in Tenerife is in our opinion Playa Las Teresitas, close to the capital Santa Cruz, but there are many beautiful beaches in the south as well.

There aren't proper white sand beaches in Tenerife like there are in the Caribbean, but Tenerife does have beautiful golden sand beaches like Playa Las Vistas, Playa del Duque, Playa Las Teresitas.

Yes, there are some lovely beaches in Tenerife, from the busy ones in the resorts that have all the facilities, to remote and wild beaches like the ones in Anaga, where you can simply admire the beauty of this island.

We’ve spent three weeks in Tenerife in spring, and even though it was not planned to be a beach holiday, every Tenerife holiday is a beach holiday to some extent. Rightly so, because there are beaches you simply have to see with your own eyes! This post is all about them: the best beaches in Tenerife.

We hiked a lot, we drove around the island, and we enjoyed exploring the beaches, sunbathing and playing in the waves. Not much swimming, as the ocean was 18-19°C at that time – still too cold for us. But Tenerife has such a wide variety of beaches! Sandy, pebbly, rocky or a mix of these.

Most natural Tenerife beaches are black or gray, and some of the artificial beaches are golden sand beaches. There are urban or remote ones. Some were great for a toddler to play, some amazed us with giant, powerful (and dangerous) waves or picturesque coastal views. Not all of them are family-friendly ( we have a different post about the best of those ) or even safe for swimming, but all of them are special and enjoyable in their own way, and there was something to love about each. Many of the best white sand beaches in Tenerife are in the south, and some of the most wonderful untamed beaches are in the north.

So let’s see the best Tenerife beaches.

Oh, those magical black sand beaches in Tenerife

First of all, we got obsessed with the Tenerife black sand beaches. I remember visiting Iceland a few years before – and how excited we got about the black sand beaches there. Not just the famous Black Sand Beach with capitals (also known as Reynisfjara), but several more that we found on our way around the island. That was the first time we’ve seen black sand beaches, and no matter the chill, the wind and the fog (or the fact that none of them are for swimming), we were seriously impressed. Well, the black beaches of Tenerife are similar and different at the same time.

Why is the sand black in Tenerife?

The Canary Islands of Spain are volcanic. It means that Tenerife’s beaches are naturally gray or black, because the sand on the beaches is formed by the erosion of the nearby cliffs. Those nearby cliffs are solidified lava, with the characteristic black color.

Are all beaches in Tenerife black sand?

No, there are black lava rock beaches, too. Okay, irony aside, the natural sandy, pebbly or rocky beaches all have shades of black. But someone must have had the idea that people coming to their Tenerife beach vacations would like to enjoy golden sand beaches, so they imported tons of golden sand from the Sahara. No, it’s not a joke. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to shape nature to look like how people expect it, but the point is: Tenerife has golden sand beaches, as well .

The most iconic beach in Tenerife: Playa de la Tejita

This one can already be seen from the airport – in case you arrive at the south airport, like us (and not in the middle of the night, like us).

Tejita Beach is long, it has reddish brown sand, and the red volcanic cone of Montaña Roja towers at the end of the beach. Romantic couples and photographers alike would agree that it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife.

However, it’s often very windy, like most beaches on the southeast coast of the island . We noticed people building up cute little walls from the rocks so that they protect them from the wind while they bathe in the sun. It’s not one of those beaches that tempted us for a swim, we rather put on our windbreakers as evening approached.

But it’s a great beach for snorkeling, surfing or kiteboarding , and we liked it because of its beautiful scenery. We also liked playing with Tomi in the soft sand. It’s perfect for long strolls in the sand and the waves , family picnics or a hike up to the top of Montaña Roja.

The most picturesque beaches in Tenerife: Benijo Beach and Los Gigantes Beach

Two of our very favorite beaches are Benijo Beach in the north and Playa de los Guíos, the beach of Los Gigantes in the south. What they have in common is the astonishing views and the fine volcanic black sand.

Benijo Beach is quite remote , though you can drive almost to the beach – not counting the 50 steps or so that runs down to it. It’s located in the very north of the island, and with the Anaga Mountains towering dramatically above it, it’s a beach you’ll never forget! It’s the starting point of the Faro de Anaga Lighthouse Circuit Trail , too, which we think is the most breathtaking coastal hike in Anaga Rural Park.

Benijo Beach can be safe for swimming at times, though there’s no lifeguard. It doesn’t face west, still it has unforgettable sunsets with the silhouettes of Anaga’s cliffs painted golden by the sinking sun. All in all, it’s the best black sand beach in Tenerife for those longing for solitude.

Playa de los Guíos, the small sandy-pebbly bay of Los Gigantes faces the famous Los Gigantes Cliffs. These sheer, rocky walls made of basalt cliffs rise majestically above the sea, reaching a height of 600 meters at some places.

Otherwise Playa de los Guíos is such a small beach that it almost doesn’t even exist at high tide. There’s a lifeguard on the beach, and it’s somewhat protected, though not always suitable for swimming. The soft black sand was a perfect playground for our Tomi, and this beach would have been worth a visit only because of the scenic views. It’s among the best beaches in Tenerife south, especially those who look for a quieter vibe.

The best kid-friendly beach in Tenerife: Playa de las Teresitas

Now, here’s a beach where you can usually swim, and even small kids can safely play in the water. Playa de las Teresitas is our favorite family-friendly beach in Tenerife, but it’s also among the prettiest golden sand beaches. The sand was imported from Africa in the 1970s.

It’s large – 1.5 kilometers stretch of sand -, it’s protected – an artificial reef spans the entire length of the curved bay -, and the water is shallow. Palm trees create a tropical vibe, and the Anaga Mountains towering above the beach provide a pretty backdrop. It has all the amenities you can think of – toilets, showers, lifeguard service, restaurants, bars, water playground.

The downside? It’s a very popular beach, definitely one of the best Santa Cruz de Tenerife beaches, so it easily gets crowded on a nice day .

The liveliest urban beach in Tenerife: El Duque Beach

We usually prefer remote beaches to urban ones, but in terms of amenities and family-friendliness, urban ones are usually better (however, we’re ready to sacrifice those :D). It’s true in Tenerife, as well. The most famous urban beaches are in Costa Adeje, and one of them is El Duque Beach.

It’s lively, even busy, surrounded by restaurants, bars and luxury resort s. But it’s also kid-friendly and usually safe for swimming , thanks to the breakwaters that protect it from the power of the Atlantic Ocean. It has fine volcanic sand, and a pretty promenade dotted with palm trees behind the beach.

El Duque Beach is also favored by sellers who walk around the beach, trying to sell you anything you don’t need or want. We’ve seen them on other Costa Adeje beaches, too, but not in numbers like on El Duque Beach. It’s also one reason that Costa Adeje beaches are not among our favorites – we like being left alone on a beach.

With all that said, El Duque is one of the top beaches in Tenerife according to many. And your kids will love all the hustle and bustle, even if you don’t.

The wildest, most remote beach in Tenerife: Antequera Beach

I’d say that Antequera Beach is one of the best quiet beaches in Tenerife, but it’s not accurate. Waves were roaring here!

Antequera Beach is just the opposite of El Duque. It’s remote – the only way to access it is by hiking (or by boat). It’s wild and dangerous – it has large, powerful waves, the most impressive ones we’ve seen on any Tenerife beach. It has no crowds, ever – we shared it with another couple who also hiked there. There’s no lifeguard or any other services there either. You can be happy if you have cell coverage. (We didn’t.) It’s only you and nature.

It took us three hours to get there from Igueste de San Andrés. Then we rested on Antequera Beach for about an hour, and hiked back. Was it worth it? Absolutely! Because it was a trail with amazing views all the way, and Antequera Beach was not even the highlight, but a nice addition to everything else we’ve seen . Trails and beaches like this made us fall for Anaga Rural Park. They actually made it our favorite park in Tenerife.

Our favorite black beach in Tenerife: Playa el Bollullo

A large patch of some of the finest, darkest sand can be found on Playa el Bollullo on the north coast , not far from Puerto de la Cruz. It’s a natural beach surrounded by dramatic cliffs, and it has no artificial reefs or breakwaters, so the waves and currents can be strong. However, there’s lifeguard service, so you can decide whether it’s safe to swim based on the color of the flag (green, yellow or red).

It’s ideal for small kids to play in the soft sand, and we liked sunbathing and admiring the waves. It’s also a nice beach to photograph, especially from above as you walk up the stairs that give access to it (lots of stairs).

You can drive to the parking lot by the stairs, or you can park on the side of the road near the El Rincón bus station . This beach parking lot is one of the few paid ones in Tenerife, but that’s not the reason we preferred parking further at the bus station and walking more to Bollullo Beach.

The last section of the road from the bus station to Bollullo is very narrow, but quite busy. Can you imagine reverting every time someone comes from the opposite direction – and it happens often? Can you imagine doing that when 3-4 cars are already behind you, and another 3-4 are coming from the opposite direction? It was less of a headache and maybe even faster to walk that last section of the road, that was our opinion. (By the way, we found all other beaches in Tenerife fine to drive to if they were accessible by car.)

From Bollullo you can also walk to nearby Los Patos Beach , but it was closed at the time of our visit. We could have a look from above, but the stairs to the beach were closed, possibly because they were in bad condition.

A lesser-known, easily accessible black sand beach in North Tenerife: Playa de Roques de las Bodegas

We were actually looking for Almáciga Beach at the foot of the Anaga Mountains when we saw this one by the road. It looked tempting, and it was almost empty, so we stopped.

It turned out to be Playa de Roques de las Bodegas, named after the small settlement where it’s located. It has soft black sand, majestic waves, and a lovely promenade that continued on a breakwater and took us a bit into the ocean to face the beach and the coastline. The view was perfect!

After that we just spent our time eating ice-cream and throwing pebbles into the water with Tomi. It was not hot enough for us to swim, but it might be possible at times, though there’s no lifeguard service. Later we drove further to take a quick look at Almáciga Beach before we headed back to our accommodation, but our conclusion was that it was quite similar to our newly found gem, only busier. This might be one of the most scenic and least busy black beaches in Tenerife that’s accessible by car.

The best beach with natural pools in Tenerife: La Arena Beach (Tacoronte)

There are two beaches with the name La Arena in Tenerife, that’s why we highlighted that we mean the one in Tacoronte. It’s a beautiful, natural black sand beach with views of El Teide in the distance.

It’s somewhat protected, but waves can still be large, so you need to be careful. Csaba went in for a short swim when we visited, and only too cold water temperatures kept me out, not the waves. Tomi loved splashing in them, too – closely supervised, of course.

There’s another thing that makes this beach special: the proximity of several natural pools. One is the natural swimming pool of Mesa del Mar (public, free pool) which is walking distance from La Arena Beach. It’s worth walking in the other direction, as well, as you can find several natural pools . While the swimming pool is okay for a swim most of the time, the natural pools are only when the ocean is calm and the tide is low. But they look wonderful all the time. 🙂

The best beach with public swimming pools in Tenerife: Piscinas de Bajamar

Bajamar Beach is one of the best beaches in Tenerife for families, it’s just not as well-known as some others. And it’s in the north, not on Costa Adeje.

The small coastal town of Bajamar has a nice, artificially protected, small sandy beach and three natural swimming pools right next to it. One of the three is specifically for kids, and the two other ones are directly by the water, so waves crash into them. Wave baths are usually built in water parks as an attraction, and here you just have it from nature, isn’t that cool?

All three swimming pools are public and free – just like Bajamar Beach -, and there’s even lifeguard service.

The best surfing beach in Tenerife: El Socorro Beach

El Socorro is said to be the best surfing beach in Tenerife. Though we don’t surf, we enjoyed watching the surfers riding the waves while lying in the soft black sand after a tiring hiking day. Sometimes El Socorro can be safe for swimming, too, but it requires caution as it’s not a protected beach.

The best kitesurfing beach in Tenerife: Playa el Médano

Médano is one of the lovely, but quite windy beaches of the southeastern coast – which makes it one of the best surf beaches in Tenerife. However, it’s even more famous for kitesurfing.

The area nearest to the town of Granadilla de Abona is more suitable for swimming and for kids, with gentler waves. But as you get further from town, you find the favorite area of windsurfers and kitesurfers.

The volcanic cone of Montaña Roja is at the south side of the beach, and we enjoyed hiking up to it – a very short, easy and scenic walk.

The best short beach hike in Tenerife: Playa de los Roques

Finally, here’s a beach for hikers (and photographers). With picturesque volcanic rock formations in a turquoise bay, Playa de los Roques is a feast for the eye, a seriously photogenic volcanic beach in Tenerife.

There’s a short loop trail that takes you around the beach and then down to it, and you can also reach it on foot from Puerto de la Cruz on the “Water Trail” (Sendero del Agua). It’s not a typical swimming beach as the waves are strong, and it’s not really for sunbathing either as it’s a pebbly beach with smooth but large, black, red and gray pebbles that’s not too comfortable to lie on. Still it has such beautiful scenery that we can’t miss it from this list of the best Tenerife beaches.

Where to stay to easily access the most beaches?

Since Tenerife is a relatively small island, and the roads are good, you can get from any place to any other within (max) two hours. So you decide whether you prefer to explore everything from one base and drive more, or to book accommodation in two or three different regions to have super quick access to those places nearby.

We chose the first option, and stayed in the cute town of Icod de los Vinos where we found an usually good deal. We liked it not just because it’s hectic and takes (too much) time to change accommodations when traveling with a toddler, but also because we could choose our day trips based on the weather. One day we drove north, the next day we drove south. Wherever it was sunny.

But you can choose to have one base in the north (like Santa Cruz or La Laguna ), in the south (like Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos ) and in the west (like Puerto de la Cruz ) .

You might not picture black sand when you dream of sunbathing on the beach, but they exist, and they’re as mesmerising as they sound.

Black sand beaches can be found all over the world, but if you love Spain (who doesn’t?), there’s plenty to be found around the Canary Islands, and each offer something a little bit different to the rest. So, get your buckets and spades out, as here are five of the best black sand beaches the Canary Islands have to offer.

Spend the day in Playa Jardin

Designed by the famous artist César Manrique, Playa Jardin offers plenty of amenities for a fun-filled, relaxing day out, with an extravagant garden full of flowers, palm trees, and other impressive feats of flora. The beach’s breakwaters protect swimmers from high waves – but do not worry, if you’re into surfing, there are open areas that create the perfect environment for riding waves. You can sunbathe, visit cafes and restaurants, go shopping, or visit the famous Loro Parque theme park. There’s also a large playground for those with young families.

Enjoy seclusion in Playa El Bollullo

There is something for everyone at Playa El Bollullo – if you want to relax on a lounger, stroll those tanned legs, or surf the strong Spanish waves, Playa El Bollullo has it covered. What’s more, if you’re feeling peckish, take a trip to the cliffside restaurant, where breathtaking views and mouth-watering food await.

Escape the crowds in Los Cancajos

Los Cancajos beach has three bays and plenty of facilities. You’ll find friendly bars, shops, nightclubs, and international restaurants within walking distance from the beach. But the real star of the show is the resort’s diving center. Here, diving doesn’t just mean seeing beautiful marine life; it means breathtaking underwater sculptures formed from volcanic activity.

Explore the unique scenery of Santa Catalina

Not only is Santa Catalina beach photogenic, it’s also home to various water activities. Here, kayaking and surfing are king, and you can join in the fun at any time: pull up, rent equipment along the beach and head into the ocean – it’s paradise on earth. Whilst the thought of kayaking and surfing might be a dream to some, for others, first-time nerves can get the better of them. Fortunately, the ocean water is fairly calm and makes the ideal conditions for beginners – so take a leap of faith and dive right in!

See The Green Lagoon in El Golfo

The Green Lagoon, black sand, and auburn rocks make The Gulf look and feel like a set from a sci-fi movie, and it’s this unusual, enchanting appearance that attracts visitors.

Take note – due to the beach being on the windward side of the island, there are almost constant winds, and swimming in the sea is not advised. Nevertheless, these strong winds make The Gulf a refreshing place to visit during hot, summer months. 

If you want to eat during your visit, then you’re taste buds are going to thank you. The nearby fishing village has fresh catch to grace many a plate, and it tastes just as delightful as it sounds.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
