To get the most value out of this important event, you should prepare for it in advance if possible, and follow up afterwards. Here are some tips on how to make the best use of your time at the Study and Go Abroad university fairs:

Before the fair:

  • See which institutions are attending by viewing the  exhibitor list
  • Read the profiles of the institutions that are of direct interest to you; also have a look at the other profiles as well – you may be surprised which university or college offers what you are looking for
  • If you are not sure of what study topic you want to pursue, start with the countries you want to study in; you can sort by country on the  exhibitor listing  (use arrow toggle over ‘country’) and see which schools are located in which countries and explore from there
  • Visit  www.studyandgoabroad.com and find out more about the various countries – you will find country facts and figures under the ‘Study Overseas’ drop down menu – and read up on some articles about student experiences, fields of study, etc.
  • If you already know what you are looking for, bring along your transcripts, portfolio, rĂ©sumĂ© – whatever you have already on hand to present to the representatives. If you don’t have them, that is okay as well – you will find out what you need once you discuss your plans

During the fair:

  • Use the Fair Guide you will get when you enter to navigate your way around the room
  • Attend the free  seminars : These information sessions are for you to learn in depth about the presentation topics and to ask questions; visit the presenters afterwards at their stands for more details
  • Ask as many questions as you need to; the fair is for you to research and learn about the many institutions in attendance
  • Collect information resource materials from the schools that are of interest to you and from the other service providers
  • Don’t rush through: It is not often that you will have the chance to visit with so many representatives in your city, so take your time!

After the fair:

  • Follow up with representatives you met and keep in touch with questions and planning
  • Read through the materials you collected during the fair
  • Make up a comparison chart of important issues that you extract from the various brochures and websites of different schools of interest to you, to help you with your decisions
  • Discuss your ideas and plans with friends and family; this often helps to clarify issues

Professional Tour Guides

Educational tours faq, q. what are educational tours.

Educational tours are study trips made to provide immersive learning experiences that go above and beyond the traditional classroom. At EduTravel, our tours take students to exciting destinations that elevate the learning in a particular course, offering students the chance to explore new cultures and environments, resulting in a deeper learning experience that has real-world implications – all while earning high school credits and coming away with a lifelong love of learning and travel.

Q. What are the benefits of educational tours?

In short, travel education programs lead to immersive experiential learning that stays with a student long after the trip is complete. Students gain an authentic understanding of the world on educational tours; hands-on learning encourages critical thinking and cultural awareness and often leads to a more passionate, exciting learning experience! Our tours have been built from the ground up to combine curriculum enhancement with adventure, leading to an engaging and memorable learning experience. Our educational travel programs also offer students the chance to explore the destination in their free time under the guidance of our qualified staff.

Q. What does ‘travel for credit’ mean?

Just like it sounds, it means that students get to travel the world while earning high school credits that will set them up for success and get a leg up on completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. These credits are universally recognized by school boards and private schools, and are a great tool to help students reach their academic goals. Think of it as a fun, exciting way to complete a high school education or add a credit to their transcript.

Q. Are student travel programs safe?

Our trips are the perfect combination of allowing students to gain a sense of independence and a taste for post-secondary life, while still being in a structured and safe environment. Safety is our number one priority. Each group is led by certified educators and follows strict safety procedures so that students are cared for at all times. Our educators and trip leaders are seasoned professionals who have often completed these trips dozens of times – you can rest easy knowing that your child is in good hands.

Q. What destinations offer trips?

You can choose from a variety of different destinations, each chosen for its combination of educational value as it relates to the course of study and excitement factor. From historical sites in Europe to beautiful vistas in South America, our student travel programs are highly curated to bring the subject matter to life and to offer something for everybody. Every destination offers students the opportunity to travel to a faraway place that has a unique connection to the subject. For instance, we offer travel education programs on biology in the Galapagos Islands, where students can see and feel exactly what Darwin experienced all those decades past.

Q. How can I enroll in a travel for credit program?

Easy – visit our website, choose from our program options, and follow the enrollment process. Our team is ready to assist with any questions you may have. See below in the FAQ for a full list of our educational travel programs.

Q. Do all student travel programs at EduTravel offer credits?

Yes! Every single one of our student travel programs offers high school credits crafted around ensuring students meet their learning objectives.

Q. How are the trips structured?

Our educational tours balance academic learning with cultural exploration. Each day includes educational activities, guided tours, cultural immersion opportunities and personal time for socializing and completing coursework.

Q. What support is provided during travel for credit tours?

During our trips, students get full support from Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Principals and Tour Directors, whether the help they need is academic, logistical, or emotional – we have amazing, caring staff members who support students throughout the trip.

Q. Is financial assistance available for Travel for Credit programs?

One of EduTravel’s core values is “total inclusiveness” which makes these programs equitable, accessible and inclusive. EduTravel offers an extensive bursary program that we run internally and offers thousands of dollars dedicated to assisting families that otherwise could not access our programs. No application that is submitted is denied funding. For a bursary application please email [email protected]

Q. Does everyone get a good grade?

It’s important to remember that this is still school – the classroom may have the Colosseum as the backdrop instead of a blackboard, but the focus of our student travel programs is education. That said, students often find it easier to excel when on our trips. Why? We’ve found over the years that the lower student-educator ratio helps make sure that every child is given the appropriate amount of attention they need to help them learn concepts at their own pace. What’s more, educators can alter their teaching strategies to better meet their students and their preferred learning styles. And here’s something we all know – when learning is fun, it’s a lot easier to retain the information you’re acquiring. Reading about Darwin’s trip through the Galapagos Islands and actually setting foot on them are vastly different experiences, and experiencing it firsthand really helps connect students to what they’re learning, creating a tangible and memorable learning experience that’s far less esoteric and far more relatable.

Q. Why choose EduTravel’s educational tours?

We are Canada’s leading Travel for Credit operator for a reason. We have issued over 12,000 credits with an immaculate track record of safety and student success! EduTravel for Credit has years of experience creating experiences that blend academic excellence with breathtaking travel experiences and total cultural immersion – all supported by a dedicated team of educators who have a passion for the subject, the location, and teaching in general!

Q. Does EduTravel offer financial assistance?

Blyth Northumberland

The industrial port.

Blyth’s brightly coloured beach huts, bustling port and abundance of heritage give it an irresistible charm (not to mention its mouth-watering fish and chips ...).  The historical port is still a working port today, and you can watch sailing boats drifting in and out from the town’s quayside. On the quayside you’ll find The Commissioner’s Quay Inn , which takes full advantage of its waterside location and offers unrivalled views of the port and beyond. Admire the low sun shimmering across the North Sea from the waterfront terrace, or head inside for the inn’s cosy alcoves, rudders used as wall hangings and overall industrial heritage-inspired decor. A focal point of the quayside is ‘Spirit of the Staithes’, a sculpture designed by artist Simon Packard and unveiled by Princess Anne in 2003.  Whilst at first glance it appears to be abstract artwork, comprised of tangled steel arms and gold panels, when viewed from a specific angle you will see the shape of a train pulling a coal truck in commemoration of the area's coal mining heritage. Blyth Harbour is a perfect place to set your fishing rod down and watch the boats come in. Don't worry if you don't catch anything, there are many food establishments serving up the fresh catch of the day . Sitting on the promenade close to South Beach , Blyth Bandstand built in around 1929 is an iconic coastal landmark that regularly plays host to live music and events . Head to Coastline Restaurant and takeaway some of the most delicious fish and chips in the county, or grab a gelato-to-go and savour it on the golden sands of South Beach. Rent one of the 20 huts that sit along the beach and use it to store your seaside essentials and stop the seagulls from stealing your scran. For the history buff amongst you, Blyth also has its own lighthouse, The High Light Lighthouse. Built in 1888 and deactivated in 1985, it is now preserved for the nation. Blyth Battery, a coastal defence artillery battery, built in 1916 to protect the Port of Blyth is now open as a Military and Local Heritage museum . Not a fan of sand, then head towards the quayside and en-route pay a visit to Ridley Park. Full of attractions and a range of activities , including tennis courts and a bowling green, as well as play areas suitable for children of all ages. Cool off at the park's popular water play area during the summer months.  The water park is open from the Spring Bank holiday weekend until the end of September. Ridley Park features woodland areas, perfect for families and walkers to enjoy. There is a cafe on site selling delicious home cooked local delights as well as refreshments and ice creams to keep the kids cool. Don't miss the Christmas Party Nights at The Commissioners Quay Inn to help get you into the Christmas spirit this winter .

Elite tutors can earn $180,000 and travel the world, but are risking a 'Faustian pact' with the superrich

  • The private tutoring industry is valued at $62 billion.
  • Private tutors for ultrawealthy families can earn huge sums.
  • For many wealthy families, tutoring is a "status symbol," but the lack of regulation is a concern.

Insider Today

A wealthy family wants to hire a private tutor for their two young children. The position includes a minimum annual salary of $180,000, nine weeks of annual vacation, and accommodation and travel expenses. However, it comes with a demanding list of job responsibilities.

The successful candidate must be artistic, provide singing lessons, and play the piano. The tutor also needs to speak Italian, with good French and German, know how to ski, play soccer, do judo, and ride horses, and demonstrate a keen interest in motorsports.

The role includes extensive travel in Europe, the Middle East, and the US alongside bodyguards and executive assistants.

The UK-based tutoring agency Tutors International, searching for the highly lucrative tutoring role, has been described as the "Dom Perignon" of the industry.

Adam Caller started the company in 1999, but it wasn't until 2003 that he inked his first "gigantic" contract.

"In 2001, we thought charging a client ÂŁ28,000 ($35,000) a year was a lot of money," Caller told Business Insider. "In 2003, I was personally offered a job by a client for ÂŁ300,000 ($380,000)."

"I didn't appreciate how valuable our service was to families like that until they told me themselves."

Caller described his clients as "ultra-high-net-worth" families. He said 90% of potential clients say "money is no object" when selecting a tutor.

"They are very exacting," Caller said. "They need to know I'm listening and will deliver on my promises."

Jerome Barty-Taylor, the owner of another private tutoring business based in Hong Kong, previously told BI that "you're expected to be available whenever and wherever your clients want you to be."

"When I first started working in Hong Kong, a parent wanted to meet me at an airport lounge to talk about his child over Champagne because we both had flights that evening. For him, it was the most efficient use of time."

Tutoring has become a "status symbol"

Current estimates put the global private tuition market at $62.08 billion. It is expected to grow to $132.21 billion by 2032.

It is no surprise that hundreds of agencies are seeking a piece of the pie, from everyday sites like MyTutor or SuperProf to elite private agencies that often hire exclusively from pools of ex-private school pupils and Oxford and Cambridge University or Ivy League grads.

One instructor who worked for an elite international tutoring agency in various places across Europe told BI that they had stumbled across the agency during their time at Oxford, where, along with Cambridge, the company does the majority of its hiring.

"I was shocked that they could charge so much for classes," they said, adding that an hour of tuition would set a client back upwards of $150.

"What was most surprising was that I had no formal training or experience, and yet because I had been to Oxford and spoke with a good English accent, clients would willingly dish out that sort of cash," they said.

One tutor who works with some of Dubai's richest families told BI that sometimes, the parents would start a bidding war with one another to secure the service of a favorite tutor.

"If they knew I would be at one client's house at a time they wanted, they would offer to pay double, triple, or even more to convince me to come to them instead," he said.

For the elite, tutoring has become a "status symbol," says Mark Bray, UNESCO Chair Professor in Comparative Education at the University of Hong Kong.

"There is also a herd effect," Bray told BI. "When everybody else seems to be investing in tutoring, it seems wise to go with the crowd, at least as an insurance policy.

"Schools may assume that children are receiving tutoring. In this case, parents need to invest in it to avoid being left behind," Bray said.

The elites don't just hope that tutors will teach their children. They also hope that a tutor will impart values.

"For the ultra-rich, education isn't just about books. It's about maintaining values," Barty-Taylor, the Hong Kong-based tutor, said.

Related stories

"That's so their children don't fall prey to the curse of 'one generation to make it, and one generation to spend it.'"

Caller said he is "unforgiving" when it comes to selecting tutors for his demanding clients, and competition for the exclusive roles is intense.

For the position Caller is currently advertising, he has received over 200 applications. He said he will likely interview three or four of these and will put two forward to the client.

With the many perks that such tutoring positions come with, it's no surprise.

"There are such brilliant opportunities to travel! You get to a glimpse into a life of luxury that you wouldn't otherwise have access to. And having accommodation paid for as well meant I was able to save far more than my peers back in London," a tutor, who spent a year working in Russia and Monaco told BI.

She said she would regularly tutor children in enormous luxury mansions, was driven around by private drivers in blacked-out cars, and was pestered by the family's nannies, who would endlessly offer her drinks and food.

"These kids had personal massage therapists and private helicopters. It was insane," she said.

The Dubai-based tutor said he had received tips of over $20,000.

But Lee Elliot Major, a professor of Social Mobility at the University of Exeter, warned that tutoring could be "education's dark side."

"Graduates from elite universities are often making a Faustian pact: serving the wealthy to pay their post‐graduation debts," he said. "Tutoring has become necessary to make ends meet for graduates trying to forge careers in sectors like the creative industries where it is hard to make a living."

But many graduates inadvertently remain tutors for far longer than they expect, he said. Glamorous destinations, private jets, inter-family bidding wars, and incomparable salaries make it increasingly appealing.

Lack of regulation is a growing concern

Tutors International has boomed in recent months.

"We've seen a 4-500% growth this year," Caller said.

Caller believes there is a clear reason for this: "Schools are not preparing children for the future of ultra-high-net-worth families."

These ultra-rich parents are worried that "if these kids are going to grow up and take over the family office, then they need to know how to run that company, not how to complete the square.

"If you've got the resources, you just take them out of the system and organize bespoke tuition for the child," Caller said.

But whatever the circumstances, the question remains about whether tutors are qualified.

To teach at a state school in Britain, for example, you need an undergraduate degree followed by a full year of training, a three-year teaching degree, or two years of on-the-job training with the Teach First program.

To tutor, you just need a client.

Major described it as the "Wild West of education."

"There is very little regulation or focus on protecting minimum standards," he said. "I always advise parents to think very carefully about the tutors they are paying."

Caller also cautioned that lack of regulation was an issue in the industry and that some companies had a tendency to over-promise and under-deliver. He added that he and other industry leaders were currently working to develop the world's first tutoring qualification.

The instructor working in Russia and Monaco told BI that one of her pupils had suffered with learning difficulties but that "the child's issues were completely brushed under the carpet, purely to ensure that the tutoring stayed in the hands of the company."

"I didn't have the training to teach an individual who was struggling like that," she said, "it was heartbreaking."

At the same time, "I liked that I was able to be there for certain kids in a way that they did not have at home," the tutor said.

"Many of the kids I taught were craving proper attention. You could see after a period of time the kids would almost soften with you and actually enjoy the time together."

This tutor also worked for another online agency that catered to more typical lower-middle-class families.

"These kids really needed the help and were keen to learn," she said.

"Although the pay was a lot less, seeing how excited the tutees would be when they made a breakthrough with a concept or problem made the job far more rewarding and enjoyable."

Qatari Emir, Gulf Foreign Ministers Travel to Iran for President Raisi's Funeral

DUBAI (Reuters) -Qatar's emir and the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait travelled on Wednesday to Tehran to attend the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, under whose tenure a historic deal that thawed relations between Tehran and its Gulf neighbours was brokered.

While Qatar has typically enjoyed warm relations with Iran, acting as a mediator between the Shi'ite Muslim country and the United States, other Gulf states had volatile relations with their neighbour. They had accused Iran of interfering in internal state affairs and backing regional foes, up until Riyadh and Tehran signed a landmark deal to normalise ties in 2023.

In the same year, the UAE also upgraded diplomatic ties with Iran. Both states share business and trade ties stretching back more than a century, with the UAE's Dubai long being one of Iran's main links to the outside world.

Kuwait reappointed an ambassador to Tehran in 2022 after recalling its top envoy in solidarity with Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia when it severed ties with the Islamic Republic in 2016. Tensions still simmered over the offshore Durra gas field, where Saudi Arabia and Kuwait claim exclusive joint rights while Iran also claims a stake.

Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and six other passengers and crew were killed in a helicopter crash in Iran on Sunday.

Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, led a high-level delegation that included Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who is also the foreign minister, to offer condolences for Raisi and Amirabdollahian, the emir's royal court said.

The Saudi state news agency said Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan attended the funeral.

Iranian state media showed UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan attending the funeral and paying his respects to the deceased. Later on Wednesday, UAE state news agency WAM confirmed the foreign minister had been at the funeral.

Kuwait's Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali al-Yahya also travelled to Tehran on Wednesday to participate in Raisi's funeral on behalf of the Kuwaiti emir, the foreign ministry reported.

Complaint: Tennessee Education Chief's travel reimbursements allegedly violate ethics code

blyth education travel

An ethics complaint filed Tuesday against Tennessee Education Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds alleges she accepted travel reimbursements paid for by a group that also lobbies the legislature, in violation of state law and executive branch standards.

Reynolds attended two out-of-state events last year with expenses paid by her former employer , ExcelinEd, a national advocacy group that works to expand education choice policies. ExcelinEd also employs a lobbyist in Tennessee, Miranda Williams, who lobbied for Gov. Bill Lee’s universal school choice proposal this year — which Reynolds also championed in the legislature.

A complaint filed Tuesday by Rep. Caleb Hemmer, D-Nashville, to the Tennessee Ethics Commission alleges that Reynolds’ out-of-state travel to conferences in October and November 2023 were paid for by ExcelinEd. The transaction amounts to a violation of state laws governing gifts to executive branch employees by lobbying organizations, Hemmer argues. He added that the governor's chief ethics attorney disagreed with him.

“Commissioner Reynolds has shown a troubling pattern of being ill-informed about the official responsibilities of her role and an outright inability to follow Tennessee law,” Hemmer told The Tennessean. “I raised this issue with Governor Lee’s Chief Ethics Counsel, who promptly dismissed my concerns. Therefore, I’ve had no option but to file an official ethics complaint with the Tennessee Ethics Commission.”

The Tennessee Department of Education and Lee's office did not respond to a request for comment from The Tennessean. Previously, Lee has emphasized support for Reynolds to continue in her role.

State law prohibits members of the executive branch; lawmakers; and political candidates and their immediate families from soliciting or accepting gifts — directly or indirectly. The law makes exceptions for out-of-state travel when reimbursed by a recognized organization of elected or appointed state government officials or their staff, or their umbrella organizations.

“ExcelinEd is an employer of a lobbyist in Tennessee and, therefore, not allowed to pay or reimburse for out-of-state travel of an executive branch employee,” Hemmer wrote in the complaint, adding that the travel “does not meet any statutory exceptions.”

If accepting gifts that are not prohibited, state law requires executive branch officials to report gifts within seven days of the event. In her 2024 statement of interest , filed with the Ethics Commission last month, Reynolds disclosed legislative expenses related to her attendance at ExcelinEd’s LAUNCH event and summit last year.

Executive Order 2 , signed by Lee in 2019, prohibits executive employees from accepting lodging, transportation, food or anything of monetary value from any entity that “has interests that may be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of the employee’s official duties.”

It also directs executive branch employees to avoid actions that could give the appearance of “giving preferential treatment to any person” or “losing complete independence or impartiality,” which Hemmer alleges Reynolds is guilty of doing.

Tuition waiver: Tennessee education chief got tuition waiver before required six-month employment period

Prior to submitting the complaint, Hemmer emailed Lee’s Chief Ethics Officer Erin Merrick sharing “serious concerns” on whether Lee’s executive order allows the commissioner to receive travel reimbursements from ExcelinEd, an employer of a lobbyist.

“I do not provide interpretations of Executive Order No. 2 to those who are not members of the executive branch,” Merrick responded via email on May 10, according to a copy of the correspondence obtained by The Tennessean.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have called for Reynolds to resign in recent months following a report by The Tennessean that she repeatedly signed forms misrepresenting her tenure with the state to obtain a taxpayer-funded tuition waiver . They have questioned her qualifications to continue leading the state agency.

Eleanor graduates with first-class honours as she pursues palaeontology dream career after chance encounter

Eleanor Beidatsch is used to overcoming the odds, but even she thought a career in palaeontology would be a bridge too far.

The 30-year-old was convinced her passion would only ever be a hobby, but her dreams came true nearly 4,000 kilometres away from her West Australian home.

Eleanor recently graduated with first-class honours in geoscience at the University of New England (UNE), travelling from Mount Barker in a van to receive her degree in person.

A woman in a wheelchair with a dog wears a graduation gown and hat. She is near two people standing in black robes.

Eleanor has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1 and has never had use of her legs. Her arm movement is also limited.

"I cannot move myself around at all," she said.

"When I'm in the wheelchair I can move, thanks to the wonders of technology."

The disease, which affects her respiration as well as her mobility, was generally considered fatal by doctors when Eleanor was born.

But in what would soon become habit, she proved them wrong.

A journey across Australia

Eleanor made the journey across Australia thanks to her mum Karen, big sister Kirsten and best friend, Ceridwen.

Each played a role in Eleanor's daily needs but were faced with the daunting task of delivering that on the road, often hours away from the nearest township.

"To pack up Eleanor is the most monumental job, we did that every morning on the road," Karen said.

The clan had clocked up roughly 3,800km from Mount Barker when they arrived at the University of New England campus in Armidale, northern NSW.

"We had to fit the van with spotlights, CB radio, a battery bank that runs all Eleanor's equipment like her respirator, a feed line," Karen said.

Big sister Kirsten said the team spent six days on the road, camping at night and often cooking in the dark.

"Managing to camp across the Nullarbor, with someone with Eleanor's degree of disability, on a tiny budget, I hope that others with disabilities can see it is possible," she said.

SMA type 1 is known as a rare genetic disease, and one of the most severe.

Doctors told Eleanor's mother to expect the worst when she was born.

"I was told to prepare to let Eleanor go, don't get invested," Karen said.

"They said the end is inevitable and that underpinning attitude has been problematic throughout her life."

Not only did Eleanor live, she thrived.

Chance encounter

Eleanor's passion for palaeontology began with a CD about whale and dolphin evolution when she was nine years old.

But she never thought it could become a career path.

"It's something I put aside and concluded it couldn't be a possibility for someone like me," she said.

But an exploration of the opal fields in Lightning Ridge in 2016 was an inspiration.

It was there the idea of studying at the UNE was floated during a chance encounter with an academic at the fields.

Years later, Eleanor has found where she fits in the vast world of palaeontology.

"I'm more of a lab rat than a field mouse," she said.

"Palaeontology is very physical, but only if you're out digging. [Information about fossils] essentially then gets put online, that is then accessible for people to do lab work, and you don't need to be able bodied [for that]."

Eleanor speaks with Dr Nicolas Campione with a backdrop of autumn trees in Armidale.

UNE geologist and palaeontologist Marissa Betts was a key figure in Eleanor's education, helping to deliver the program online.

Dr Betts' main goal was to dispel presumptions that careers in geoscience weren't achievable for people with restricted motor skills.

"Geoscience is traditionally a more able-bodied discipline; that bias has kept people out of earth science for a long time," she said.

"Making education accessible for all people is something UNE really excels at. It has been a leader at online and distance education for many years."

Marissa Betts smiles at the camera with the autumn trees in the background.

Dr Betts acted as a mentor for Eleanor's honours degree, which encompassed two years of postgraduate studies and the construction of a thesis.

"Eleanor is very dedicated, she is really good with communicating
she's excited about the subject matter."

First-class honours

The Beidatsch family and friends proudly watched on as Eleanor donned her cap and gown and patiently waited to be called to the stage by Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Moran.

UNE was well aware of the journey Eleanor faced before she could join her peers on the stage, and invited her to give the vote of thanks at the graduation ceremony.

"The last two years of study has taken me on a journey through time, but also on a journey of myself," she told the crowd.

"As a student with disabilities, the most important part of learning is access and inclusion, and at UNE, that attitude has shone in every interaction."

Although the ominous prospect of returning home loomed, Eleanor was already planning the next step in her fledgling career.

"I have already started the enrolment process of my masters for palaeontology," she said.
