General Application Tips:

On the Buck-I-SERV application you will be able to select as many trip options as you are willing to participate in, you could even select ALL of them!  Buck-I-SERV places all partcipants by a lottery system. Remember to keep your mind open to ALL break options, we love them all and the communities can't wait to meet you.

We have a lot of questions within the application, and it's possible the form could time out while you work, meaning the loss of all your text work. To avoid that frustration, type short answer/essay responses in a separate document. This point is really important if you are completing leader or supplemental questions.  Once responses are drafted, log back into your application, paste essay answers into the form and then submit the application.

If you submit your application and need to make a change, you can do so until the application due date.  Just log back into your application, and you should see your completed information.  Hit submit, and any changes will be saved to your submitted application.

You will receive a confirmation email after the successful submission of the Buck-I-SERV application.   If you do not receive a confirmation email, please resubmit the application.

All Columbus campus students are eligible and encouraged to apply for Buck-I-SERV.

See application for individual trip prices.

MSP hits the road for alternative spring break trip to DC

Morrill Scholars talk to high school students

More than two dozen Morrill Scholars participated in an alternative spring break in mid-March with a trip to the nation's capitol for a double dose of mentoring and a closer look at public policy creation.

While in Washington D.C., the students spent time doing a workshop with high-school students from the Thurgood Marshall Academy focusing on college readiness and mental health support though artistic journaling. Another component of the trip for the students involved helping a local YMCA chapter host the DC YMCA Youth and Government Legislative weekend.

The MSP students also spent time exploring D.C. including a visit to the African-American History Museum and several took the time to speak about their college experiences at a special ODI Alumni event held that weekend.

Unforgettable last-minute road trips in North America

Stumped about spring break? Drive to these volcanic peaks, high deserts, and the New World’s only Viking settlement.

The first cross-country car trip in the U.S. occured in 1903, when a doctor and mechanic traveled between San Francisco and New York City in a shiny red Winton touring car. It took them 64 days.

Since then, four-wheeled travelers—including fictional ones like Thelma and Louise and canine co-pilots in Travels with Charley —have answered the call of the open road. A recent survey by the American Automobile Association found that 69 percent of respondents named car journeys as their favorite type of vacation. Taking a trek with family—across North America’s wild frontiers, through tiny historic towns, storied cities, and into spectacular landscapes—might be the best spring break your kids ever experience. It’s not hard to plan or execute. But be sure to pack a good playlist.

Here are six family-friendly routes, from a ramble through the Ozarks to a jaunt through Viking country in Newfoundland . You can complete some of these trips in a day or two; others make for memorable week-long odysseys.

Florida’s forgotten coast

St. George Island on the gulf coast of Florida

On Flordia’s Gulf Coast, St. George’s Island has sublime beaches and few crowds.

One of the Sunshine State’s most alluring shores falls beneath the radar, where Florida’ s Big Bend Region offers up swamps, sand dunes, and seaports—and few crowds. Near the start of the route—which traces one of America’s top 10 panhandles — Wakulla Springs State Park appeals to water-loving kids and parents with swimming and boat cruises plus chances to spot manatees . Founded as a British trading post in the 19th century, Apalachicola holds more than 900 historic structures, including the 1913 Dixie Theater. Top stops: At the outsize St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge , secluded wetland trails yield bird-watching ops and views of the 1842 St. Mark’s Lighthouse. For beautiful beaches and a laid-back vibe, head to St. George’s Island. Route: 135 miles from Tallahassee to Panama City

Volcanoes on the West Coast

mist rising over Spark Lake near Bend, Oregon

Volcanos and the incredible landscapes they form highlight this drive through the Cascade Range of Washington , Oregon , and Northern California . Your geology-obsessed teenager will dig the lava fields, cinder cones, slumbering snowcapped giants, and Oregon’s Crater Lake . Top stops: Portland , Oregon’s 410-acre Washington Park offers plots of rainbow-hued roses and Japanese-style gardens plus the Oregon Zoo, with goats to pet and Pacific Northwest-themed habitats for otters and beavers . And near the California -Oregon border, Lava Beds National Monument is home to 15 types of bats, which live in caves formed by volcanic activity. Route: 1,150 miles from Seattle , Washington, to Sacramento , California

Mountains and spicy food in the Southwest

the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the fifth highest bridge in the USA

Follow an ancient route along the upper Rio Grande Valley from El Paso , Texas, to Taos, New Mexico , and you’ll delve into Spanish colonial history and Native American heritage—all with a side of rugged mountain and high desert scenery. It’s a prime route for foodie families thanks to weekly farmers markets in Las Cruces and Santa Fe and a slew of restaurants specializing in homey New Mexican chow. Top stops: Santa Fe’s multiple museums include the International Museum of Folk Art with displays of riotously colorful toys, dolls, and other playthings from around the world. And the Taos Pueblo , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lets kids explore life in an adobe community that’s been continuously occupied for hundreds of years. Route: 472 miles from El Paso, Texas , to Taos, New Mexico

Coastlines and colonial history in New England

a hiker walking around Upper Haddlock Pond at Acadia National Park, Maine

A hiker walks along Upper Haddlock Pond in Maine’s Acadia National Park.

The New England coast from Boston to the Canadian border backdrops a 400-mile journey through cities, towns, and oceanscapes that have shaped the region for four centuries. You and the kiddos can dive into colonial history in Salem, Massachusetts, or play spot-the-lighthouse throughout Maine . Top stops: Gloucester, a Massachusetts seafaring town founded in 1623, has restored wharfs, a pretty harbor, and summer day sails aboard the schooner Ardelle. Acadia National Park ’s rocky coastline and deep woods can be explored by hiking trail, car, or on horseback. Route: 400 miles from Boston to Lubec, Maine

A trek in Viking territory

the Viking settlement at L'Anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site in Newfoundland Canada

The Viking settlement at L’Anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site in Newfoundland was built more than 1000 years ago.

Norsemen set foot in North America roughly 500 years before Columbus, a brief but significant heritage reflected in the Viking Trail, a road trip down Newfoundland , Canada’s rugged, windswept West Coast. Drink in the craggy ocean vistas and take your daughter, the wannabe Viking skjaldmær (shield maiden), to L’Anse aux Meadows —a UNESCO World Heritage site—to see the ruins of a 1000 A.D. Norse settlement and a living-history encampment. Top stops: Go on a family hike in Arches Provincial Park, with its views over the Gulf of St. Lawrence and dolomite arches carved by waves over hundreds of years. Or watch salmon swimming up the fishway in Hawke’s Bay at the Torrent River Salmon Interpretation Centre . Route: 314 miles from L’Anse aux Meadows to Deer Lake

An amble through the Ozarks

the Buffalo River Valley, Arkansas

Tourists snap photos at an overlook in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest

Zigzag across the wild Ouachita Mountains and storied Ozark Plateau to Arkansas ’s historic bathhouses, melodious mountain towns, and the mines that give the Diamond State its nickname. Give the kiddos a dose of political history in Hope at President Bill Clinton’s boyhood home or take to the water for fishing, paddling, or snorkeling on Lake Ouachita. Top stops: The Ozark-St. Francis National Forest holds hiking trails, lofty viewpoints, and the old-timey Hankins Country Store (open since 1930). And for a taste of mountain culture, the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View hosts crafts demonstrations and live music year-round. Route: 340 miles from Texarkana to Mountain View

Buckeye Road Trip helps fund students’ trips home for Thanksgiving break, provides travel to 6 cities

  • November 1, 2022

Ohio State students looking for an affordable and convenient way to travel home for Thanksgiving can join Buckeye Road Trip, a reduced-cost bus service funded by the Undergraduate Student Government.

According to the USG website , the program brings students to six cities: Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo, Ohio, as well as Chicago, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Roundtrip nonrefundable tickets can be purchased online for $25 for Ohio cities and Pittsburgh and $65 for Philadelphia and Chicago.

Jack Tumulty, USG director of student affairs and a second-year in finance, said there are about 54 seats on each bus.

According to the USG website, the trip to Chicago is full, and anyone else who signs up will be put on a waitlist.

USG Chief of Staff Sage Klein, a fourth-year in political science and moving image production,  said Buckeye Road Trip is one of the most cost-effective transportation options for students and is an efficient way to get home for the holidays.

“Many people go home for Thanksgiving to see their families, but not everyone has access to affordable transportation, which could be especially limiting for people from cities that are further away,” Klein said.

Tumulty said buses “have departed at the same time” in past years, but changes have been made to make departures more organized.

“This year, to make it a little less hectic, the out-of-state buses will be leaving an hour before the in-state buses,” Tumulty said.

Tumulty said students will meet at the Ohio Union across from Drinko Hall Nov. 22. Students must be ready to depart by 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. depending on the city, have an ID — which serves as their ticket after reserving a spot online — and are allowed one medium-size piece of luggage. Students will return to campus Nov. 27, according to the USG website.

Tumulty said each bus has two student ambassadors who take attendance before the bus departs and act as a contact for USG if any issues arise during the trip.

Steven Egnaczyk, a third-year in computer science and engineering, said in an email he used Buckeye Road Trip to travel home to Philadelphia and was thankful for the affordable option.

“I definitely recommend it,” Egnaczyk said. “It was so cheap compared to a flight or having my parents drive seven hours there and back from Philly.”

Tumulty said traveling during the holidays can be a challenge for many, so a convenient option can benefit students across the university.

“It provides a really affordable transportation option at a time when other transportation options are very price inflated during the holidays,” Tumulty said.

Students can visit the website for more information or email the Buckeye Road Trip team at [email protected] , or call the USG office at 614-292-4380 with questions.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

buckeye road trip spring break

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).
