WONDERING IF RENTING A GOLF CART ON CATALINA ISLAND IS WORTH IT?

Yes! Renting a golf cart on Catalina Island is worth it. My partner and I just rented a golf cart the last time we went to Catalina Island for the day ; it was not only worth the expense, but it’s the only way to cover all the landmarks in a short amount of time.

From the Author: We recommend Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals & Tours . Make a reservation in advance; they sell out of golf carts. It’s one of the more popular things to do on Catalina.

Cars are restricted on the Island . You can walk, and we did plenty of that too, but after we tooled around in the golf cart for two hours.

Two hours is all you need.

We rented our golf cart from Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals and Tours . But there are more golf cart rentals on the island.

California enforces strict regulations on the number of vehicles within the city limits of Avalon, resulting in a limited presence of cars. This is one of the reasons that makes Catalina Islands worth visiting , in our opinion.

Instead, locals predominantly utilize golf carts for transportation, reflecting the unique landscape of this 76-square-mile island.

The tour conveniently picks you up off the ferry or anywhere in town with legal street parking.

The reason we recommend this Private Golf Cart Tour of Avalon is to see the town in a fun, zippy way in two hours. Since Catalina Island is restricted to permitted vehicles, and golf carts, it’s a safe way to get around the island on wheels.

We all had a great time…Letti was so informative and knew a lot of history about the Island. Would definitely recommend. Such a fun experience. A+ —GIna ( see more reviews )

The town of Avalon is approximately 1 square mile, and all of the sights can be visited during this tour.

One reason we love this tour is that some of the golf cart rental companies are strict.

Island Rentals only takes cash and offers  a pre-planned 12-mile scenic route that may be completed in 1 hour without stops . You may go longer for a pro-rated amount.

It’s more enjoyable to have the time to stop and see the beautiful areas of Avalon with the expertise of a local from Catalina and not have the meter running, it’s a flat fee.

If you’re staying the night in Avalon, you can return to whichever locale you want to explore further, but with the Private Golf Cart Tour , you can get out and explore a bit more than renting a cart yourself.

In the map below, you can see how small the town of Avalon is ⤵ .

Phone of seven golf carts in a row. Renting a golf cart on Catalina Island? It's fun seeing Catalina on a golf cart.

One of the primary benefits of renting a golf cart on Catalina Island is the freedom to explore the island at your own leisurely pace.

Navigating the island’s rugged terrain and meandering roads becomes significantly more convenient with a rented golf cart, surpassing the effort required for walking or cycling.

While alternative modes of transportation such as taxis or buses are available, the unique experience of traversing an island in a golf cart adds a touch of novelty.

However, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks of renting a golf cart on Catalina Island.

One notable disadvantage is the associated cost, as renting a golf cart can be relatively expensive compared to other transportation options, like walking.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that golf carts may have limited storage capacity, which could pose a challenge if you plan to bring along substantial luggage or other items during your exploration of the island.

“From start to finish, this was a great tour experience. Our tour guide Letty was very informative and funny. She was able to answer any of the questions we asked, not sure if they were all correct answers but we had a blast with her. We saw and learned more in the two hours spent with her than we would have if we rented a cart and driven around ourselves. There were 4 of us so when you divide the cost by 4, I felt it was an awesome price for what we saw and learned. I highly recommend this tour for a first-timer like us who grew up with the song and were looking for romance.” – Jack_B

catalina island golf cart rental near cruise port

Cruise port, rented for an hour $40.00. Little pricey but worth doing. Short walk from port.

We rented a 4 person gas cart (but actually got a 6person for same price), $40.00 for an hour plus a $40.00 deposit (cash only for deposit). Cash deposit returned at end of rental. Wish they had electric carts. It takes about 1hour and 20min to drive the whole route of the little town of Avalon, this includes a few quick picture taking stops. They charge .77cents a minute over the 60min. We did it in an hour but didn't go to the garden/camp ground areas. Views at the top are gorgeous, great pics of the cruise ship and the town/beach area. Also great pics of Seals on the beach. If you want to stop more often or go to all the areas then you should rent for more than 1hour.

We rented 2 four person golf carts. I rented them online a couple weeks in advance so I could get the 3 hours for the price of two. About a day prior to us leaving for our cruise, Carnival notified us we had a change in itinerary and Catalina would be pushed back a day. We tried calling the rental place but since it was a weekend, they weren't answering phones. We emailed them we needed to change our date and we also left a phone message. We never got confirmation back from them which worried us. We didn't want to lose our money for not showing up a day late. We got on our cruise and hoped that our rental would still be honored when we got to Catalina. When we arrived in Catalina, it was a short walk. Do not stop at the first place on the left. It is a little further down where the road bends. The first place seemed to have really nice white golf carts. When we found our rental location, there was no wait and they had our reservation, thankfully. People at the desk were very friendly. Had to leave our $80 cash deposit. Given brief instructions on how to operate and then we were on our way. Golf carts were in used condition. Nothing special. Ours didn't go very fast and we were passed by a few golf carts from the other rental place. They did the job and we had a nice time. If you rent golf carts, it took us about 2 hours to do the island with stops for photos. We ended up returning it a half hour early because we saw all we could in the 2 1/2 hours. Just note, there is literally no where to park in most places so keep that in mind. We had a hard time finding a place to park to get a public restroom. Only place we found was behind the casino there was a bunch of modern port a potties. Returning rental was easy, just drive up and get out. Go inside and get your deposit. They even gave the kids a bag of taffy. They were nice at the desk once again. We did note that when we dropped off our carts, there weren't many left in cartopia. I do recommend this rental place. Don't go with high expectations of a speedy, new cart and you will be pleased. Do know that they smell like exhaust when following one another. I do wish phone/email response would have been better though. I also recommend renting early to insure you get a cart!

Renting a golf cart is a perfect was to explore the island. Just be sure that you check the rental information at the various locations. We discovered that several other riders had gotten a much better deal at one location vs. the one we used --- and both were owned by same company.

Reservation was on time, easy check in and check out, friendly service. They provided a high quality car seat for my 3-year -old granddaughter and a good overview of the scenic route to take.

There are several golf cart rentals around town and they are the same company. Rental is by the hour and while you can use a credit card to pay for the rental, they also required a $40 deposit which was refunded when we returned the cart. These are gasoline powered cards and are licensed vehicles. We were given a map of allowed areas and I think we went every where. We went up some steal roads and found great views. We also drove around the town, out by the heliport and by the Casino. We lived our time - we had it for three hours but easily saw it all in two. It was not crowded in January. I don't walk well so this was a super adventure! We recommend it!

My friend and I are both in our late 70s and walking is a little hard for us...we checked out of the hotel at 11 and our boat didn't leave for the mainland until 3:45 we rented the cart for 3 hrs and they said we could come back in and they would stop the time so we could have lunch then pick up the cart for the rest of the 3 hrs...they even stored our luggage for us and then took us to the boat terminal for our ride home...we toured the majoruty if the island around Avalon with lots of stops for picture taking...was really impressed with the pet cemetary that was situated in a grove of trees, very well kept...can't help but wonder if this was the inspiration for Steven Kings "Pet Semerary" book

Catalina Island – California

Escape to the idyllic Catalina Island, located off the coast of California. Explore the charming town of Avalon with its quaint shops and restaurants, take a relaxing stroll along the waterfront, or indulge in water activities such as snorkeling and kayaking. Discover the island's natural beauty by hiking through scenic trails or join a guided tour to spot local wildlife. Catalina Island offers a perfect blend of relaxation and outdoor adventure.

American Dollar

Where You Dock in Catalina Island – California

Several of the world’s top cruise lines come to Catalina Island with a cruise schedule that runs year round. Due to the infrastructure of the island, cruise ships coming into Catalina anchor in the harbor outside of Avalon and you will be brought to shore by smaller shore boats which bring you to Green Pleasure Pier, and Crescent Ave., which is the four block shore-side center of Avalon.

On either side of the pier you will find a beach along the island’s shores if you choose to take in a little sun before heading into town.

Getting Around Catalina Island – California

Catalina is a relatively small island with a population of around 3,500. As such there is an inviting small-island charm.

Getting to and from mainland California can be done by sea or air. Helicopter rides will bring you to the mainland within 20 minutes, and boats going to any of four mainland ports San Pedro , Long Beach , Newport Beach or Dana Point will take about an hour.

To explore the island, there are several types of transportation. Avalon, the main town is less than one square mile and is easy to travel on foot. However, to explore further out you may want to use alternative forms of transportation such as taxi, trolley, or shuttle bus:

Taxi: Taxis provide pricing as a flat rate from one destination to another, and as a metered ride, which is established in taxi rate card inside the taxi.

Trolley: The Avalon Trolley will take you from the Wrigley Botanical Garden and through Avalon. You pay the driver in cash: $2 one way, $4 roundtrip, and $7 for an all-day pass. You can either call ahead, or catch a taxi on the run, however reservations are not generally taken for rides within Avalon.

The shuttle bus, also known as the Safari Bus, links Avalon and Two Harbors with several stops in between.

Rent a bicycle or Segway: There are several places to rent a bike or Segway for a day within Avalon. While this gives you a fun and easy way to explore the town and island, most rentals only operate as a single day rental, with reservations that can be made one day in advance.

Rent a golf cart: There is limited access to cars on Catalina Island, as the waiting list to bring a car on the island is close to 14 years. This has enabled golf cart rentals to become one of the islands main sources of travel for tourists.

Shopping In Catalina Island – California

The main shopping area on Catalina Island is strolling downtown Avalon. With a leisurely stroll through downtown you can find a variety of unique independent shops. As Avalon is primarily a tourist destination you can expect to find the same within the shops with resort-style clothing, souvenirs, handmade crafts, jewelry and artwork.

Dining In Catalina Island – California

Restaurants on Catalina are generally Mexican, American, and seafood with aspects of Mediterranean. Most restaurants are found within a short walk from each other in Avalon, with a variety of venues from casual to fine dining.

You have several options in regards to ocean or island view, popular tourist dining, or quaint, and quiet private dining. For an idea of what you can expect, here are a few dining options to start out with:

Steve’s Steakhouse: The only classic steakhouse on the island. Enjoy your steak as you take in some of the best harbor views on the island.

The Lobster Trap: Casual Seafood, steak, and pasta joint with a full bar.

Luau Larry’s: Great drinks, food, and atmosphere highlighted with music and a quirky island feel that may have you thinking you are in the Florida Keys rather than Southern California.

Avalon Grille: One of the newer restaurants on the island. Avalon Grille serves American regional food, has a small bar, and indoor/outdoor seating.

Catalina Coffee and Cookie Company: A great coffee shop with a variety of caffeinated and bakery options. It is also the only frozen yogurt fruit bar on the island.

Things To Do in Catalina Island – California

For a small island Catalina has a lot to offer. It is truly for the outdoorsy type, offering a variety of inland hiking and biking options as well as water sport, and more adventurous activities. If you prefer a more relaxing adventure you can rest on the beach, enjoy 18 holes of golf, or take the island casino walking tour.

Undersea Expedition: A great way to view beautiful life underwater as you travel five feet underwater in a spacious, climate-controlled cabin. Every person has their own porthole to view sea life from as well as the ability to move around and explore other views.

Casino Walking Tour: Take a trip back to the 1920’s as you stroll within the Catalina Casino. Explore where big bands once played and the world famous Catalina ballroom.

Zip Line Eco Tour: Explore Catalina history and wildlife via zip line. The zip line travels ¾ of a mile with 5 separate zip lines that travel up to 300 feet above the canyon, nearing 40 mph.

Cape Canyon Expedition: Venture into Catalina’s backroads to discover the ruggedness of Cape Canyon from rugged middle ranch canyon, to the steep Sheep Chute where the Catalina Bison are often found. Enjoy a bit of adventure in a 12 passenger eco-friendly H1 Hummer.

Kayaking: There are daily guided kayak excursions and kayak rentals available Descanso Beach Ocean Sports, Wet Spot Rentals, and Catalina Tours.

Snorkeling and SCUBA: If you think Catalina is beautiful above water, you will be amazed below. Snorkeling and SCUBA rentals and guided tours can be found in both Avalon and Two Harbors.

Catalina Island offers one 18-hole golf course originally built in 1892 and is considered the oldest running golf course West of the Mississippi river. It is a 2,100-yard course with two sets of tees for 18-hole play.

In addition, there is a miniature golf course within a garden-like setting, and less than a block from the ocean.

Descanso Beach: There is a $2 per day fee to enter the beach. The beach is located on the far side of Catalina Casino, and is a two-tiered private beach with several water sport and beach amenities.

South Beach and Middle Beach: Both beaches are located alongside Green Pleasure Pier, each on the other side of the pier. Enjoy your day sitting out in the sun, or take the short walk to Avalon for food, drinks, and shopping. Life guards are on duty during the day.

Step Beach: Located a short distance from South Beach and Middle Beach, Step Beach is a small strip of sand that stretches into deeper ocean waters. Life guards are on duty at posted times of the day.

Two Harbors: Enjoy the beach and water activities from both sides of the Two Harbors Pier. The beach has a sand volley ball court, as well as water and sport rentals from Two Harbors Dive and Recreation.
