Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

  • Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.
  • Focus on the next time you’ll meet. Whether it’s catching up for a meal or picking them up from the airport, make a plan and remind them (and yourself) that it’s only a matter of time before you see each other again.
  • Make a time to speak. If you know you’ll hear their voice when the flight lands or the train pulls in, you’ll feel much better about sending them off.
  • Remember, the person travelling is excited for the journey ahead – but they’re probably just as emotional as you!
  • Reassure them that you’ll be thinking of them. These safe journey wishes are perfect for just that.
  • It’s not only about what you say, it’s also what you do. Depending on your relationship, a warm hug or a hand on the shoulder can mean a lot.

The Cultural Significance of “Have a Safe Journey”

Have a Safe Journey

In the great tapestry of human interactions, the phrase “Have a safe journey” holds a special place. It is a common sentiment that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries, serving as a universal expression of concern and well-wishing. Its roots can be traced back to times when journeys were fraught with peril, and safety was not guaranteed. Even in contemporary times, despite the relative security of most forms of travel, this phrase remains deeply ingrained in our lexicon, reflecting our collective consciousness of the inherent uncertainties of life.

The cultural significance of “Have a safe journey” lies not only in its ubiquity but also in its versatility. It is equally at home in the casual farewells of friends, the solemn partings of lovers, and the anxious goodbyes of parents to their traveling offspring. This phrase serves as an emotional shorthand, encapsulating a range of feelings from affection and concern to hope and longing. It is a testament to the power of language, capable of conveying complex emotions in a simple, universally understood manner.

Interestingly, the phrase “Have a safe journey” has also found its way into the world of literature, where it often serves as a metaphor for life’s journey. From Shakespeare’s tragic heroes embarking on quests of redemption to Hemingway’s stoic protagonists confronting the harsh realities of existence, this phrase has been employed by authors to underscore the unpredictability and inherent risks of life. Thus, “Have a safe journey” is more than just a farewell greeting; it is a cultural artifact, a linguistic thread that weaves together the shared experiences of humanity across time and space.

2. The Emotional Resonance of Wishing for Safety

Have a Safe Journey

The phrase “Have a safe journey” resonates deeply with our primal instincts for safety and survival. It is an expression of our innate desire to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm, a sentiment that is as old as humanity itself. When we wish someone a safe journey , we are acknowledging the inherent risks of travel and expressing our hope that they will be spared from any harm. This act of wishing for safety serves as a psychological buffer against the unpredictable nature of life, providing us with a semblance of control in a world often characterized by chaos and uncertainty.

On an emotional level, the act of wishing for safety can also serve as a profound expression of love and concern. Each time we utter the words “Have a safe journey”, we are effectively saying, “I care about your well-being. I want you to return to me unscathed.” In this sense, the phrase is not just a casual farewell greeting but a heartfelt declaration of affection. It is a testament to the depth of our emotional bonds, revealing our capacity for empathy and compassion.

Furthermore, the emotional resonance of wishing for safety extends beyond our personal relationships. It reflects our collective aspiration for a safer, more secure world. Every time we wish someone a safe journey, we are contributing to a culture of care and concern, reinforcing the social norms that underpin our communal life. Thus, the phrase “Have a safe journey” serves not only as an individual expression of concern but also as a symbol of our shared commitment to each other’s well-being..

3. The Philosophical Underpinnings of the Phrase

Have a Safe Journey

The phrase “Have a safe journey” carries with it a depth of philosophical significance that reaches far beyond its surface meaning. It is more than just an expression of concern or a wish for safety; it is a reflection of our understanding of life as a journey, fraught with uncertainties and dangers.

At its core, this phrase embodies the human condition’s vulnerability and acknowledges the inherent unpredictability of life. When we say, “Have a safe journey,” we recognize that despite our best efforts, we cannot control everything. We are at the mercy of circumstances beyond our reach, subject to the whims of fate. This realization, sobering as it may be, is a fundamental aspect of human existence. It reminds us of our limitations, prompting us to appreciate the present moment and cherish the people around us.

Moreover, the phrase also encapsulates a profound sense of hope and optimism. By wishing for someone’s safety, we express our belief in the possibility of a positive outcome. We affirm our faith in the idea that, despite the risks and challenges, the journey will ultimately be safe and rewarding. This optimistic outlook is a testament to our resilience as a species, reflecting our ability to find hope amidst uncertainty and to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

4. The Evolution of “Have a Safe Journey” in Literature

Have a Safe Journey

The phrase “Have a safe journey” has been woven into the fabric of literature, evolving in its usage and connotation over time. It has been employed by authors as a tool to convey a myriad of emotions and situations, reflecting the cultural and societal changes that have occurred.

In early works of literature, the phrase was often used in the context of physical journeys, particularly those fraught with danger or uncertainty. Characters embarking on epic quests or long voyages would be bid farewell with these words, underlining the perilous nature of their endeavors. This usage reflects the realities of the time when travel was a risky venture, filled with potential hazards and unforeseen complications.

As literature progressed, the phrase began to acquire metaphorical dimensions. In modern and contemporary literature, “Have a safe journey” is not restricted to physical travel but extends to emotional and psychological journeys as well. Characters navigating the complexities of relationships, grappling with inner conflicts, or undergoing personal transformations are often wished a ‘safe journey’, signifying an understanding of their internal struggles and an expression of empathy and support.

This evolution in literature mirrors the broader shifts in our understanding of safety and journeying. As society became more complex, so did the challenges we face, extending beyond the physical realm into the psychological and emotional spheres. The phrase “Have a safe journey”, therefore, serves as a literary testament to these changes, encapsulating our collective experiences and evolving perceptions.

5. Reinterpreting “Have a Safe Journey” in Modern Times

Have a Safe Journey

In the contemporary world, the phrase “Have a safe journey” has taken on new meanings and interpretations. As society becomes increasingly globalized and interconnected, physical travel is no longer the perilous venture it once was. Instead, safety concerns have shifted towards the digital realm, where cyber threats and information security are paramount. Thus, wishing someone a ‘safe journey’ could now imply a desire for their digital protection, particularly when navigating the vast, often treacherous landscape of the internet.

Moreover, as our understanding of mental health continues to evolve, the concept of a ‘safe journey’ has expanded to encompass emotional and psychological well-being. In this context, wishing someone a ‘safe journey’ may be an expression of support for their mental health journey, acknowledging the challenges they may face while affirming their resilience and strength. This reinterpretation reflects the growing recognition of mental health issues and the importance of emotional safety in our society.

Lastly, the phrase “Have a safe journey” is also being reinterpreted in the context of social and cultural journeys. As people navigate the complexities of identity, gender, race, and culture, the journey towards self-understanding and acceptance can be fraught with difficulties. Wishing someone a ‘safe journey’ in this context is a way of expressing solidarity, empathy, and respect for their struggles and experiences. This reinterpretation underscores the ongoing societal shifts towards greater inclusivity, diversity, and understanding. In conclusion, the phrase “Have a safe journey” is more than a mere farewell or a casual expression of concern. It is a testament to our shared human experience, a reflection of our collective hopes and fears, and a symbol of our capacity for empathy and compassion. As we navigate through the unpredictable seas of life, these three simple words serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles and that there is always someone wishing for our safety and well-being.

As we unravel the layers of meaning behind this common phrase, we are reminded of the power of language to connect us on a deeper level. Whether it’s a heartfelt goodbye from a loved one, a casual farewell from an acquaintance, or a silent prayer from a stranger, the phrase “Have a safe journey” resonates with all of us, echoing our shared desire for safety, security, and peace.

In the end, every journey—whether physical or metaphorical—is fraught with uncertainties and challenges. But as long as there are people wishing us a safe journey, we can face these challenges with courage and optimism, knowing that we are not alone in our journey. So the next time you wish someone a “safe journey”, remember the profound significance of your words, and take a moment to appreciate the deep connections they foster.

11 Better Ways To Say “Safe Travels”

“Safe travels” is a polite way to wish somebody well on their upcoming journey. However, there are better ways to be polite and reassuring to your friends when they’re ready to go somewhere (often by plane). This article will share the best alternatives for such a case with you.

What Can I Say Instead Of “Safe Travels”?

There are plenty of ways to use “safe travels” in more exciting manners. You should check out one of the following:

  • Have a good flight
  • Happy landings
  • See you on the other side
  • Let me know when you arrive safely
  • Stay safe out there
  • Enjoy your trip
  • Have a relaxing time away
  • Happy travels

Better Ways To Say Safe Travels

The preferred version is “be safe” because it keeps it simple. It’s a common phrase we use when we want to wish someone well, and we don’t want them to come across any complications or dangers that might occur if they’re not “careful” enough.

“Be safe” is great to show we care about someone. It lets them know that we worry about them, and we want them to stay “safe” no matter what happens. It works regardless of the method of transport for the journey as well, which makes it a good general phrase.

It’s common for family members to use the phrase “ be safe ” when seeing each other off. This shows that there is a lot of love behind the phrase and that it works well to show how much you care about someone’s wellbeing.

Here are a few ways we might be able to use this phrase:

  • Be safe out there. I know you like to find trouble, but for once, I’d love it if you looked after yourself!
  • Be safe on your way out! I would love to hear from you and see the pictures of all the things you get up to.
  • Don’t forget to message me when you get there! Be safe, and I love you!

“Safe trip” is a simple phrase we can use to make sure someone knows we care. Using words like “safe” reminds people that we worry about them. Even if we are not physically there with them, we hope they are “safe” and do not get into trouble.

This phrase works well regardless of the trip that someone is taking. It could be a long-distance or a short-distance trip. Likewise, it could be by car, plane, boat, or something else entirely!

This phrase works in the following situations:

  • Safe trip, Yuri! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be thinking about me while you’re away.
  • Safe trip back to your hometown, then. Let me know when you get there safely.
  • Safe trip, old friend. I’ll see you again whenever you’re next in town!

Have A Good Flight

“Have a good flight” is appropriate to use when someone is going to get on a plane . We use “flight” here to be specific, which helps us to show that we know what someone is getting up to and what they’re likely going to expect from their journey.

We can use this phrase in the following ways:

  • Have a good flight! I’m sure you can get all the food and drink you want on there!
  • Have a good flight, and don’t forget to let me know when you land safely!
  • Have a good flight! There’s nothing to worry about, and you know it’ll all be okay!

Happy Landings

“Happy landings” specifically highlights the “landing” portion of a journey. It works well when someone is going on a plane, and we want them to be “happy” throughout the course of their journey.

Here are a few useful examples of how this one works:

  • Happy landings, fella! Don’t forget that they really like their tips out there when you’re dining out!
  • Happy landings, then! I’ll miss you every second, so I want you to send me all the photos you can!
  • Happy landings! Don’t forget to explore some of the local scenery!

See You On The Other Side

“See you on the other side” is an informal idiom that works well in many cases. We can do it when we know that someone will be returning to see us again soon. “The other side” indicates the place where we will be staying while they go on a journey.

Check out some of these examples to see how it looks:

  • See you on the other side, then! Have a great holiday!
  • Have a great time away, Fred! See you on the other side!
  • I’ll be here waiting for you as always! See you on the other side!

Let Me Know When You Arrive Safely

“Let me know when you arrive safely” is a calm way to let someone know that you are worried. When they arrive at their destination, we can ask them to “message” us to ease our minds and show us that they are thinking about us even after their journey.

We could also use a phrase like “text me when” instead of “let me know when.” If we want to be more specific about the manner of messaging, this phrase works just as well.

This phrase works well in the following ways:

  • Let me know when you arrive safely, please! You know how much I worry about you while I’m not around!
  • Text me when you arrive safely, please! I want to know just how much fun you’re getting up to.
  • Let me know when you arrive safely! I’ll miss you every second that you’re away.

Stay Safe Out There

“Stay safe out there” is a good way to show that you care about someone. “Stay safe” helps to let them know that you’ll be looking out for them and that you want them to explore, but in a reasonable way that won’t cause them harm.

We typically use this phrase when someone is going on a long-distance journey. “Out there” is a good indicator of that.

Check out some of these examples to see how it works:

  • Stay safe out there, then! I know you’ll make all the best choices while you’re away.
  • Stay safe out there! I’ll miss you, but I know you’ll be having an absolutely adoring time!
  • Stay safe out there. You never know what hijinx you might get into, so make sure you text me!

Enjoy Your Trip

“Enjoy your trip” is a simple way to show someone that you care. It helps to let them know that we want them to “enjoy” themselves. While trips can sometimes be boring (especially long-distance ones), we want people to feel like they can still have fun.

This simple phrase works as follows :

  • Enjoy your trip, Michael! Let me know when you arrive so we can discuss the adventure more!
  • Enjoy your trip! Don’t forget to immerse yourself in the local culture when you get there!
  • Enjoy your trip! I expect you to be fluent in German by the time you get back, okay?

Have A Relaxing Time Away

“Have a relaxing time away” works well in many cases. It’s most effective when we know that someone is inclined to worry (whether about the journey or the place they’re going). If we want to calm them down, this phrase works well.

These examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Have a relaxing time away! Remember, you don’t need to worry about a thing when you get on that plane!
  • Have a relaxing time away! If anyone deserves it, it is most certainly you!
  • Have a relaxing time away! I’m going to miss you, but I know you’ll be back in no time!

Happy Travels

“Happy travels” works really well when we want people to feel “happy” on their journey. “Travels” can refer to any method of transport, but the idea is that they’ll be spending a long time getting from point A to point B, and we want them to feel “happy.”

Perhaps one of these examples will help you make more sense of it:

  • Happy travels, mate! I know you’ll love it over there in Australia, but you must tell me all about it.
  • Happy travels, Sue! I’ll miss you, so don’t forget to write to me every day about what you do.
  • Happy travels, Dan! Thank you for coming to see me again, and I’ll see you again soon, yeah?

“Bon voyage” is a great way to wish someone well before they go on an adventure. It’s French (and Italian), and it means “good journey.” It’s a commonly-used exclamation in English when we want to wish somebody well for something they’re going to do.

It’s also comforting because it shows that we do not wish any problems to come their way when they’re on their journey.

  • Bon voyage, my little friend! I’ll see you again when you return!
  • Bon voyage, then! I will miss you, but I hope you get a chance to text me a bunch when you get there!
  • Bon voyage! I love you so much, and I’ll definitely miss you while you’re away.

Is It Correct to Say “Safe Travels”?

By: Author Dr. Patrick Capriola

Posted on Published: September 9, 2021

It’s early in the morning, and you have your suitcase by your side. You’re holding your tickets, climbing in the car that will take you to the airport when, behind you, your friend waves and shouts, “Safe travels!” You stop for a second because the phrase sounds a bit weird — is it correct to say “Safe travels”?

It is correct to say “safe travels” as a way to express your wishes for someone’s safe and healthy trip. This phrase is typically used during a goodbye and is one of the last things you would say to someone you wish to have a safe journey. You usually only hear it in the phrase “safe travels” or when it comes with a possessive adjective.

Here, we’ll take a look at the usage and grammar of the phrase “Safe travels” and then look at some of the most frequently asked questions surrounding the expression.

Is It Grammatically Correct to Say “Safe Travels”?

If you’ve ever wondered if “Safe travels” is grammatically correct, in short, yes: it is grammatically correct. Although the phrase may sound a bit strange at first, it is actually right. So let’s discuss why it is technically correct.

The plural noun “travels” might seem a little weird to you because it is an old word; people don’t really use the word “travel” as a countable noun very much these days. Instead, “travel” is usually a verb.

However, the phrase “Safe travels” — along with other specific phrases and usages that include the plural countable noun “travels” — has kept the word alive in very specific situations.

This means that, even though we don’t say the word “travels” very often, it is grammatically correct, especially when you use it in the phrase “Safe travels.”

So, the main reason why it is correct to say “Safe travels” is because it is a widely accepted and clearly understood English pleasantry that has stood the test of time. Since the expression “Safe travels” has such wide and clear usage by English speakers, we consider it correct.

The Many Forms of “Travel”

If you’re wondering if the phrase “Safe travels” is correct, then it probably has a strange ring to your ears. This perception is most likely thanks to the plural form of the noun “travel” that appears in the expression. So why does it sound weird? It has to do with the form of the word “travel.”

Travel as a Noun or Verb

The word “travel” has a few different forms in English ( source ). For example, you probably think of a verb when you hear the word “travel.” You might picture taking a trip or going on a vacation. The verb “to travel” is the most popular form of this word.

However, “travel” is also a noun; in fact, it is a countable noun ( source ). So, you can use the word “travel” as the subject or object of a sentence. This also means that the noun “travel” can have both a singular and a plural form ( source ). So why does “travels” still sound a bit strange?

Contemporary Expressions

The noun form of “travel” isn’t prevalent anymore. In the past, people used “travel” as a countable noun much more frequently, but nowadays, we usually opt for other ways to express the noun form of “travel.”

For instance, a more popular way to use the verb “to travel” in noun form is to use the gerund, “traveling.” Both “travel” and “traveling” are nouns; however, “traveling” is the more popular and contemporary way to talk about the action of moving from one place to another.

Another countable noun that has replaced “travel,” especially when you’re using the plural form of the noun, is the synonym “trip.” Consider these two examples:

  • I keep a journal when I travel; I make notes about all of my travels.
  • I keep a journal when I travel; I make notes about all of my trips.

The second sentence sounds much more modern, and only one word is different. You can see how the plural noun “trips” sounds much more typical in today’s English.

Here’s another thing you should know about this tricky noun: if you’re going to use the plural noun “travels” outside of the phrase “Safe travels,” it will usually take the possessive ( source ). So, instead of asking a friend, “How was your trip?” you can ask, “How were your travels?”

Of course, this sounds a bit archaic, but it is technically grammatically correct.

The Adjective “Safe”

So, since the word “travels” is an acceptable plural countable noun, it makes sense that it should come with an adjective. Thus, the adjective “safe” in the phrase “Safe travels” modifies the word “travels.”

We have to use the adjective form of “safe” rather than the adverb form since the word “travels” here is a noun and not a verb. However, don’t get confused: when you use the verb form of the word “travel,” you should use the adverb “safely.”

Review the following example sentences to see the differences between “Safe travels” and “travel safely.”

Whenever Jane drives, she travels safely : she wears her seatbelt and follows all traffic rules.

As Jane was leaving for her long road trip, I stood in the driveway and called out, “ Safe travels !”

The pilot said, “We want everyone to travel safely , so we’ve upgraded all of our safety and emergency equipment.”

The pilot said, “We hope you enjoy the flight, and we wish you all safe travels !”

From these examples, you can see the difference between the adjective “safe” and the adverb “safely.”

We use the adjective form of “safe” with the plural countable noun “travels,” while we use the adverb form “safely” with the verb form of the word “travel.” The adjective comes before the noun, while the adverb comes directly after the verb.

How Do You Say, “Safe Travels”?

for safe journey meaning

So, now that we’ve broken down the expression, how can you use it in action? You usually say (or write) the phrase “Safe travels” right before your friend goes on a trip. It’s a quick and easy way to show them that you hope their trip — whether it’s a long vacation or just the drive home — goes smoothly.

“Safe travels” is an expression that you’re more likely to hear when you’re speaking or texting with a friend. It’s not a very formal phrase, so you will probably see or hear it in a conversation rather than an essay or formal document.

It’s also very likely that you will see the phrase “Safe travels” written in places like an airport, a train station, or a bus stop. You can find this quick and easy phrase mostly in informal situations, although it’s not inappropriate in a formal situation, either.

“Safe Travels” FAQs

If you still have a few questions about the phrase “Safe travels,” you’re not alone! Here are some of the most popular questions about the expression “Safe travels” and some helpful explanations to help you use it correctly every time.

Is “Safe Travels” a Complete Sentence?

To put it simply, “Safe travels” is not a complete sentence on its own. To create a complete sentence, you need a subject and a verb. This requirement means that you need to define who or what is doing or being something and then define what they are doing or being.

So technically, the phrase “Safe travels” is just a noun with an adjective to modify it. However, when we use the expression “Safe travels” in English, it can stand alone without a verb because it is a pleasantry.

You might not be familiar with the word “pleasantry,” but you’ve certainly seen and heard many examples of them. A pleasantry is an expression or phrase that people use to show positive wishes, and you usually use it for a specific context or occasion.

An example of a popular pleasantry is “Happy birthday.” You say “happy birthday” to a specific person on a particular day of the year. And even though it technically isn’t a complete sentence, it expresses a complete thought and stands alone.

Just like “Happy birthday,” “Merry Christmas,” or “Good morning,” the phrase “Safe travels” can stand by itself, even though it technically isn’t a complete sentence.

Most people accept this because they understand that you are wishing them well when you use these pleasantries, even when it’s not a complete sentence with a noun and a verb.

For more examples and information about using English pleasantries in conversation and writing, you can check out the articles “ Greatly Appreciated: Meaning and Proper Usage ” and “ Is It Proper Grammar to Say, ‘Looking Forward to Talking to You’? ”

What Can I Say Instead of “Safe Travels”?

It’s always a great idea to express positive wishes to your friends, coworkers, or even your boss before they travel. But perhaps you’ve used the phrase “Safe travels” several times in your past emails or correspondences, so you might be looking for new ways to express the same sentiment.

There are lots of pleasantries that English speakers use when a friend, family member, or colleague is leaving for a trip. If you’re looking for other ways to say, “Safe travels,” then check out this list of examples:

How Do You Say “Safe Travels” in an Email?

Generally, you’ll find the phrase “Safe travels” at the end of an email. It’s usually the sign-off after the main part of the message, right before you sign your name at the end of the email.

You might be wondering if it’s professional or acceptable to add “Safe travels” to an email. In most settings, it’s perfectly fine to add this expression to the end of an email, whether you’re writing to a friend, family member, coworker, or boss.

It’s professional enough to send to everyone without adding too formal or heavy a tone to your message. This article was written for strategiesforparents.com.

Although “Safe travels” isn’t a complete sentence, you can still use it as a pleasantry in conversation or as a sign-off for an email or a message. Like many phrases and expressions in English, the wide usage and easy understandability of “Safe travels” makes it correct.

Final Thoughts

Even though the phrase “Safe travels” may sound a bit strange at first, it is a correct and grammatically accurate way to wish a friend, family member, or colleague a nice trip. The expression “Safe travels” is a light and positive way to send your friend off on their vacation or to wish them well before their journey.

You can use the word “travels” as a countable noun in this phrase, although it’s not a very popular plural noun in contemporary English. It was a widely-used word in the past, but nowadays, people prefer to use the synonym “trips.”

Of course, the word “travels” has remained part of the modern English language thanks to the phrase “Safe travels” and other specific usages of the word.

You can use the phrase “Safe travels” in an informal or professional setting: it is versatile and appropriate for all occasions, from casual conversations to formal work emails.

While “Safe travels” is not technically a complete sentence all by itself, it is a common phrase that can stand alone. This type of expression is called a pleasantry, and there are many widely-used pleasantries in the English language; “Safe travels” is just one example.

Safe Journey or Save Journey? Which is correct?

“Safe Journey” is correct and “Save Journey” is incorrect in English. “Safe Journey” is a way to wish someone well when they embark on a journey to another place.

I am going to London later this evening.

Oh great, I hope you enjoy yourself. Safe Journey!

Safe Journey

“Safe Journey” is a way to wish someone well when they are traveling to another place. We use this when we want someone to have a safe trip as sometimes accidents can happen while traveling to another place.

Alternatives to Safe Journey

  • Safe travels
  • Bon voyage
  • Travel safely
  • Drive safely
  • Have a safe trip
  • Have a nice trip
  • Have a safe journey

We use “save” when we want to keep something or gather something together. It doesn’t make sense with “journey” or “trip” so “Save Journey” and “Save Trip” are incorrect. They should be “Safe Journey” or “Safe trip”.

What Is The Difference Between Travel And Journey?

To Have A Safe Journey Home Meaning

Travel and journey are closely related concepts, yet they carry distinct nuances. Travel refers to the act of moving from one place to another, typically involving the physical transportation of oneself or belongings.

It’s the broader, logistical aspect of changing locations, often focusing on the process of getting from point A to point B.

Travel is about covering distances and experiencing new surroundings, encompassing modes like driving, flying, or sailing.

On the other hand, a journey extends beyond physical movement. It encompasses the entire experience, including personal growth, emotions, and the narrative of exploration.

A journey is a transformative passage, whether it’s a physical expedition or an internal exploration. It delves into the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of the experience, often involving challenges, self-discovery, and reflection.

Furthermore, travel refers to the movement of individuals from one place to another, emphasizing the physical act of changing locations.

It involves the logistical aspects of transportation and the process of reaching a destination, such as booking flights, packing, and navigating routes.

Journey, on the other hand, encompasses a broader and often more profound experience. It goes beyond mere movement and includes the personal and emotional aspects of the passage.

A journey is about the stories, discoveries, and transformations that occur during travel. It involves personal growth, self-discovery, and a narrative of exploration.

In simple terms, travel focuses on the how of getting from one place to another, while a journey encompasses the entire experience, including the why and the meaning behind the movement.

While travel might be a series of planned steps, a journey is a rich tapestry of experiences and emotions woven throughout those steps.

While travel and journey are interconnected, they possess distinct essences. Travel captures the physical act of moving, the logistics of getting from point A to point B.

On the other hand, the journey encapsulates the emotional and transformative aspects, delving into the stories, growth, and reflections that emerge along the way.

Think of travel as the vessel, the means to reach a destination, and journey as the sails that catch the winds of experience, propelling us through a sea of emotions and discoveries.

Embracing both elements enriches our lives, allowing us to appreciate not only the destinations we reach but also the profound stories that unfold throughout the voyage.

So, whether we embark on a short weekend getaway or a lifelong adventure, understanding the nuances of travel and journey adds depth and meaning to our experiences.

What Elemental Is Really About: The True Meaning Of The Pixar Movie

  • Elemental's world features unique elemental cultures, not based on real-world societies.
  • Integration between different elements in the film is shown as beneficial and beautiful.
  • Director Peter Sohn drew inspiration from his immigrant family's story for the film's themes.

"What is Elemental about?" is the question on many fans' minds when it comes to Pixar's 27th feature film. Elemental , directed by Peter Sohn, his second outing as director after first leading Pixar's earlier movie, The Good Dinosaur , was for a moment looking like it would be a massive flop for the studio. However, Elemental 's success on Disney+ streaming , with over 26 million views, led to many people discovering the beautiful world of the film. They also discovered that the "rom-com with a twist" story it was sold as, hides a much richer text.

In the world of Elemental , there are four groups of anthropomorphic elements of nature: earth, air, fire, and water. Each of these elements generally keep to themselves and their own cultures, but when Wade (Mamoudou Athie), a water element, and Ember (Leah Lewis), a fire element, meet, their romance threatens to upend the status quo. Like many Pixar movies, Elemental is far deeper than it's simple surface story may imply . It's not just a romantic tale between star-crossed lovers, but a treatise on immigration, integration, and other themes of inclusion.

Elemental 2: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

The elements in elemental are their own unique cultures, the different elements are not representative of a particular society.

At first, the elements may appear to represent real-life societies and cultures in a one-to-one reflection. They all have specific roles in the world, their different sections of the city are curated for them, their jobs are specialized, and the animation for each group is different. However, none of the cultures are ultimately pulled from something in reality; t hey are their own unique and original creations with ideas taken from a variety of different groups of people . The fire elementals, ostensibly immigrants, have multiple identifiers, making for a unique hodge-podge that results in something new.

This was intentional and the director, Peter Sohn, spoke about how the creative team did not want the elements to represent any one culture . He said during a presentation at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California, via SlashFilm ,

"Once people started saying, or asking, 'Oh, are they Asian?' It's like, 'No, no. They're not meant to be Asian.' Or is, 'Air meant to be this culture?' Quickly I would realize, 'No, no, no, these have to be universal.' My biggest goal was to try to take the element itself and pull from there to make the culture."

Though the different elemental societies feel like they have to be based on something, they're not, at least not totally. Like any great creators, Sohn and his team made some assumptions about the characters and where they came from and created a culture out of that reality they made,

"Obviously, if you go too far, it could become alien, so you do have little grounding ways to do that. Something that was really interesting was disruption. Meaning, you think there is a piece of a culture that is mixed with the fire element on top, but then the next one should take you into another place where it's giving you other values of cultures that we know, but without it pointing to anything. But more than anything, it was just saying like, 'Oh, they're fire people. They eat wood. No Earth people eat wood in this way. How can we exploit that? What kind of plates would they have?' So it'd be extrapolating everything we could from the culture."

If the societies in Elemental feel like they are from the real world, it's because Sohn and his team mixed the cultures they've experienced with the ones they made for the movie and then used that new blend as a launching pad to create something completely new. It works. The air elements, the water, fire, and earth all feel like lived-in societies. Nothing feels gimmicky or untrue because it's all created from a place of honesty.

Not Only Is It Safe For Elements To Mix, It's Good

Wade and ember prove that elements can integrate.

A major conflict of Elemental is that Ember's fire family and Wade's water family don't want members of their tribes to mix. It's dangerous in their minds, and from what everyone knows about the elements, they may be right. Just throw a log on a fire, puff air on it with a blower, then douse it all in water to see what happens when one element meets another: a soggy, smoldering, cough-inducing, useless piece of wood. Ember and Wade prove, however, that mixing the elements is not as dangerous as everyone thinks .

They spend plenty of time together as their relationship blooms into love, and with only a few hiccups, they are able to be close with one another just as they can with characters of their own community. What Ember and Wade further reveal is that it's not only safe to mix, but that by integrating the things they each know and understand, they can create something beautiful . When Ember goes to Wade's home to meet his family, she fixes a shattered vase in moments and turns it into something incredible with her ability to melt and reform glass.

Far from being shocked, the water elements are delighted; their entire section of town is melted glass after all, as Wade's mother points out. These water elements lived in these beautiful buildings and used their glass silverware without ever knowing how they were made. By bringing Ember to meet them, Wade shows just what can happen when two groups let their guards down and grow by experiencing other people and their ways of doing things.

Elemental Is Inspired By The Director's Life In An Immigrant Family

Peter sohn had a life similar to ember's.

With such a specific story about love, community, and immigration, it should come as no surprise that Peter Sohn took inspiration for Elemental from his parents' story of emigrating from Korea to New York City in the 1960s . Sohn's father even opened a grocery store, much like Ember's father opened a store in Firetown. He told SlashFilm about using that history to help find ideas for what the story would end up being,

"You're in rooms like this, literally, where you're sort of [meeting] and talking about ideas of the story, but then every so often there'll be some little nugget that we all connect to like, 'Wait, so what happened?' It's like, 'Yeah, my mom did X or Y,' and then all of a sudden this authentic emotion comes up that you all resonate [with], and we're just chasing that."

Sohn and his team reached back into their own experiences to tell an authentic story. Though they may not have fallen in love with someone in a new city the exact way Wade and Ember do, they would certainly have had similar memories they could piece into the overall film. These moments with a real emotion and experience behind them help to color the world of Elemental and ground it somewhere that viewers can relate.

Growing up in New York City probably inspired Sohn to design Element City the way he did, as well. With its soaring skyscrapers, and non-stop movement, Element City, just visually, looks a lot like The City That Never Sleeps. That is, if men playing chess in the park were replaced by tree stumps and young couples strolling through midtown were instead flowing water and sizzling fire, which perhaps they all are. There are distinct sections of New York City with its five boroughs, and the four sections of Element City feel united but separate in a similar way.

Elemental Has A Broad Message For Everyone

People from all walks of life can appreciate elemental's message of cooperation.

With all the conversation around immigration, inclusivity, and community, one may suspect that Elemental is strictly an allegory for the experience of immigrants in America, a classic story in cinema. However, Elemental 's themes are broad. They can be applied to anyone who has found difficulty assimilating into an in-group , whether it's as consequential someone who identifies as LGBTQ+ trying to fit in with a heterosexual-centric society, or as evergreen as a college student trying to fit in with a new clique of people.

Elemental illuminates how these differences between people, if not discussed, can become barriers that only serve to keep one group from learning about the other. The different elements in Element City have preconceived notions about one another. They want to be accepted or to be rid of one group for fear of losing a part of themselves. As the elements discover, they can accept pieces of one another into each other's lives without losing those things that make them unique.

Pixar’s Elemental focuses on the residents of Elemental City, who are all made of land, air, water, or fire.  Originally thinking that elements can’t mix thanks to her father, Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) sets out on a journey with Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) to see the world in a whole new light. Also starring is Catherine O’Hara as Brook Ripple, Wade’s mother, and Ronnie del Carmen as Bernie, Ember’s father.

Who is Considered a Pedestrian in Iowa?

Current law in Iowa defines a pedestrian as a person specifically on foot and does not include people in wheelchairs, riding scooters/skateboarding, or cyclists. Lobbyists and advocacy groups like, AARP Iowa, and the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center pushed to make the language of the law more inclusive. Late last week Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new law that changes the meaning of a pedestrian. The new definition adds some language and now includes “ a person using a pedestrian conveyance”   in addition to a pedestrian on   foot. A pedestrian conveyance is any human-powered device a pedestrian may use to move or move another person. It also includes electric motored devices as long as they produce less than 750 watts. The bill goes into effect on July 1st.  Check out the full article from CBS .

Driving in a Tornado – How to Stay Safe

Never try to outrun a tornado. According to AccuWeather, tornados can travel very quickly and do not follow road patterns. If you are driving and a tornado develops it is best to try to find shelter in a sturdy building. When there is no shelter nearby, experts recommend staying in your car, secured using your seat belt, putting your head down below the window, and covering your head with your hands or a blanket if you have one. If you can safely get to a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine, basically lower than the roadway, then exit the car and lie down in the area and cover your head with your hands or use a protective covering like a blanket or tarp. Also avoid taking shelter under an overpass. The winds are higher in these openings and flying debris can still get to you. Check out the full article on tornado safety .

A severe geomagnetic storm has hit Earth. Here's what could happen.

By Allie Weintraub

Updated on: May 10, 2024 / 8:35 PM EDT / CBS News

A severe geomagnetic storm  that hit Earth has the potential to knock out power and electronics this weekend, but it could also bring a spectacular light show from the aurora borealis as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

After days of heightened solar activity, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center issued Thursday its first watch for a G4 storm — the second-strongest rating on a scale from G1 to G5 — in nearly 20 years. It then upgraded it to a G5 on Friday.

The prediction center reported in a social media post that "extreme (G5) geomagnetic conditions" were "observed" for the first time since October 2003. Friday's G5 conditions were first observed at 6:54 p.m. Eastern Time and could continue through the weekend, the agency said.

The G5 storm in 2003 caused power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, according to prediction center.

"Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth's surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations," the NOAA said in an earlier statement. "[The Space Weather Prediction Center] has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action."

Risks to the power grid

A G5 geomagnetic storm is considered "extreme" and has the potential to cause widespread voltage control problems to the power grid, damage transformers, and even cause complete blackouts. According to the  NOAA , in a G5, "high frequency radio propagation may be impossible in many areas for one to two days, satellite navigation may be degraded for days," and "low-frequency radio navigation can be out for hours"

These types of effects on power systems were first noted in 1940 and have been reported throughout the years, with incidents including a power blackout in 1958, equipment tripping and voltage stability issues in 1972 and a nine-hour blackout in Canada in 1989, according to NOAA.

The last time there was a G5 or "extreme" geomagnetic storm was in October 2003, when it caused power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa.

Effect on satellite and radio operations

As of Friday afternoon, NOAA had also observed a moderate solar radiation storm that could expose people in high-flying aircraft to "elevated radiation risk" and could cause infrequent issues with satellite operations.

With a G5 storm, "satellite navigation could be degraded for days," it warns.

Radio blackouts have also been detected with an R3 designation, meaning that the blackouts were "strong" on a scale from R1 (minor) to R5 (extreme). At this level, wide blackouts of high-frequency radio communication is expected, as well as loss of radio contact, for about an hour on the sunlit side of Earth, as low-frequency navigation signals decline for roughly an hour.

Expansion of northern lights

The same phenomenon that causes these disruptions is also responsible for making the aurora borealis viewable in places you normally can't see them.

"Earth's magnetic field guides the electrons such that the aurora forms two ovals approximately centered at the magnetic poles," NOAA said . "During major geomagnetic storms these ovals expand away from the poles such that aurora can be seen over most of the United States."

Vivid displays were visible over parts of Europe and the U.K. on Friday night.

Spring weather May 11th 2024

"If you happen to be in an area where it's dark and cloud free and relatively unpolluted by light, you may get to see a fairly impressive aurora display," Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center, told reporters Friday. "and that's really the gift from space weather, is the aurora."

Landlines may be saved in California – for now. What this means for consumers nationwide

for safe journey meaning

California utility regulators are proposing rejecting a request by AT&T to eliminate its responsibility to provide traditional landline phone service. That could have implications nationwide, a consumer advocate said.

Fewer telephone companies are offering basic landline phone service as the utilities say the copper-wire infrastructure is old and expensive to maintain, and the demand for landline phone service is low as consumers move to mobile and other services.

But consumer advocates nationwide have cried foul, saying basic landline service is important for the country's most vulnerable, including senior citizens who don't want to rely on cell service, consumers who can't afford cellular service and those in rural areas that may not have good access to cell or broadband internet services.

What happened in California?

Earlier this year, the California Public Utilities Commission opened public comments on an application by AT&T to waive its responsibilities to be what’s called “Carrier of Last Resort” (COLR), meaning the utility has to offer the copper-wire landline service.

The utility and many of its peers have been petitioning state utility commissions and legislators, asking to be relieved of the task.

On Friday, Administrative Law Judge Thomas J. Glegola wrote a decision proposing that the California commission reject AT&T's waiver. The proposal will be voted on by the commission at its June 20 meeting. The judge also proposed that the commission look at the rules outlining the carrier of last resort service obligations.

In a press release announcing the upcoming vote, the commission said the public response to AT&T's request "was extensive with over 5,000 public comments received into the record and eight Public Forums held in-person in three cities and virtually across the state, drawing more than 5,800 attendees."

The proposed rejection "underscores the critical importance of ensuring universal access to essential telecommunications services for all Californians," the commission said in its statement. "As the designated COLR, AT&T plays a pivotal role in providing reliable telephone service to communities across the state."

The commission added that while the communications company said mobile wireless and other services could fill the void, "the CPUC found AT&T did not meet the requirements for COLR withdrawal. Specifically, AT&T failed to demonstrate the availability of replacement providers willing and able to serve as COLR, nor did AT&T prove that alternative providers met the COLR definition."

Public commenters also highlighted the unreliability of voice alternatives such as cell service or Voice Over Internet Protocol services (VoIp) which are internet phone providers, the commission said.

What is AT&T's response?

AT&T in a statement said it was disappointed in the proposed rejection. Competition for other more reliable phone alternatives is robust, said Marc Blakeman, president of AT&T California. Blakeman said there are less than 5% of households in California that AT&T serves who still use copper-based landline phone service.

“We are disappointed by the CPUC’s proposed dismissal of our application for relief from Carrier of Last Resort (COLR) regulation, as we’d hoped the commission would allow us the opportunity to demonstrate why the number of options for voice service available to customers make the COLR obligation unnecessary," Blakeman said.

Not surprisingly, Blakeman said, no providers were interested in bidding on the carrier of last resort service "with a declining number of customers given the competitive options available in today’s marketplace. We remain committed to keeping our customers connected to voice service and will continue working with state leaders on policies that allow us to bring modern communications to Californians.”

AT&T made the request in California for a waiver and has also lobbied successfully for legislative reform in 20 other states, which eliminated the utility’s requirement to provide traditional landline service.

Blakeman said during climate disasters, when staying connected is essential, AT&T's fiber network is more reliable "than our outdated copper network" and that old copper cables take significantly longer to repair following weather events, in some cases taking weeks to dry due to damage from extensive rain and flooding.

Consumer advocates point to the need for electricity for most alternatives to traditional landlines and note that when there is no electricity, consumers can still use their landlines.

Is the proposed rejection expected to pass?

While the rejection is a proposal and still needs to be approved by the commission, Regina Costa, telecommunications policy director for The Utility Reform Network (TURN) in California, said she fully expects the board to approve it.

“What AT&T really wants is to stop providing essential telecom service to 99% of its service area, without providing a shred of evidence that there are real alternatives. This includes many areas threatened by wildfires, earthquakes, floods and power shutoffs," Costa said in a press release. "If AT&T gets its wish, it would significantly jeopardize public safety."

In an interview with USA TODAY, Costa, who is also chair of the telecommunications committee for the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates, said California's proposed rejection of the landline waiver is on top of a recent rejection in Utah for another utility to waive its obligation to provide landlines.

"I think it's very important for consumers nationwide,'' Costa said. "I think that would give other states the impetus to look at the same thing."

Loss of landlines? Phone companies want to eliminate traditional landlines. What's at stake and who loses?

When deregulation took place in telecom, the assumption was there would be lots of alternatives to landlines, she said.

"I think California and Utah are stepping up to the plate and saying no, we need to think about this carefully,'' she said. "We need to make sure that all of our people have service. How do you let the largest carrier in a state walk out the door and the markets that they want to abandon are the ones that are most at risk?"

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Is A Great Reminder To Watch Director's $949 Million Franchise

Kingdom of the planet of the apes' biggest theory was wrong & i'm shocked, kingdom of the planet of the apes conquers box office with franchise's second best opening.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes!

  • Noa's clan uses eagles for their coming-of-age ceremony, symbolizing courage and rebirth.
  • The eagles contribute to the metaphor for Noa's heroic journey, aiding him in his transformation.
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes captures Noa's growth from a child to a leader, with the eagles playing a pivotal role.

In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes , Noa and his clan domesticate and raise eagles, establishing a nuanced meaning for the film. In the Planet of the Apes chronology , the latest movie is set 300 years after 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes . While the previous film saw human forces steadily dwindling in a harsh environment, the 2024 follow-up picks up events in a world where apes have become the dominant species. The remnants of human civilization are becoming less frequent, though apes have established roots for their own societies.

Owen Teague leads the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes cast as Noa, a young ape from the Eagle Clan. Early in the film, his village is attacked by another band of ruthless apes, who kill his father and destroy their establishment. This sets Noa on his path to rescue his captured friends and mother, and like many movie protagonists, the journey becomes a transformative process that shifts Noa from a child in a small village to a hero and a leader. The eagles play a pivotal role in his journey, both literally and figuratively.

Why Noa's Clan Uses Eagles In Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes

Noa's clan use eagles for their coming of age ceremony.

At the beginning of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Noa and his friends are seen on their adventure to collect eagle eggs from a high-peak nest. This is later revealed to be part of a coming-of-age process in the Eagle Clan, where the youths are intended to take care of an egg as part of a ceremony. Despite his impressive efforts, Noa's egg is broken incidentally, which serves as the catalyst for the movie. As his journey begins, he's followed by his father's eagle, who at first refuses to bond with him.

The birds serve a distinct purpose in the clan as they're sent to catch fish. Racks filled with fish can be seen around the village, and are seemingly the primary food source. Importantly, the eagles are a cultural element of Noa's clan, meant to demonstrate the apes' continuous ability to domesticate animals, following horses in the previous trilogy . In the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ending , the eagles come together to support Noa, killing the antagonist Proximus Caesar.

The Real Meaning Of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' Eagles

The eagles contribute to the metaphor for noa's heroic journey.

Since they don't serve a distinct function within the clan, or at least not one that's shown in the movie, it can be assumed that the eagles are part of a spiritual process. They serve a significant role in the coming of age of the clan's members, representing courage, transcendence, and rebirth . While Noa doesn't have his traditional ceremony, the events of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes act as his coming of age. When Noa grows into becoming a leader like his father and like Caesar, the eagles respond to him and come to his aid.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Set several years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the next installment in the Apes saga. Ape clans have taken up residence in the oasis that Caesar sought to colonize, but humans have reverted to their animalistic nature in their absence. Now battling between enslavement and freedom, outliers in the Ape clans will take sides in a newly burgeoning society.
