Wat te doen tijdens een stedentrip Helsinki? De Finse hoofdstad is misschien niet de eerste bestemming die in je opkomt als je een citytrip gaat maken, maar je kunt je makkelijk een weekendje vermaken.

Helsinki laat zich maar moeilijk vergelijken met andere Europese steden. Er zijn geen wereldberoemde bezienswaardigheden en bijna alles is er schrikbarend duur. Toch moet je je daarvoor niet laten ontmoedigen, want ik heb het aardig naar mijn zin gehad. Benieuwd wat je allemaal kan doen in Helsinki? Lees hier mijn tips voor een stedentrip of weekendje weg.

TIP: VERBLIJF IN DE WIJK KALLIO

Een van de leukste wijken van Helsinki is Kallio, dat ten noorden van het centrum ligt. Met zijn brede lanen, hoge arbeiderswoningen en vintage winkels deed het mij een beetje aan Berlijn denken. Dit is de hipste wijk van de stad en een plek in opkomst. Achter spiegelende winkelpuien gaan kringloopwinkels en huiskamercafés schuil. Obscure barretjes worden in het straatbeeld afgewisseld met hippe eetgelegenheden. Volgens The Guardian is het dé plek waar je coolste bars, cafés en boetiekjes van de stad zal vinden, en daar ben ik het wel mee eens. Het stikt van de hippe winkels en restaurantjes, en je kunt hier voor Finse begrippen nog redelijk betaalbaar eten en drinken.

ONTDEK HET DESIGN DISTRICT VAN HELSINKI

Helsinki is de stad van design en het hoofdkwartier van de mooiste Finse merken. In het centrum van de stad vind je het Design District, een creatieve hub waar jonge kunstenaars en gevestigde merken samenkomen. In dit deel van Helsinki stikt het van de mooie interieurwinkels en lokale boetieks. Als je niet oppast vliegt het geld je zakken uit, maar dan kom je wel thuis met iets heel moois. Neem zeker een kijkje in de Iittala winkel en de reusachtige Academic Bookstoren.

➞ Helsinki tip: Gratis is altijd goed in een dure stad als Helsinki. Ga mee tijdens een gratis stadswandeling met lokale gids en je komt op plekjes die maar door weinig andere toeristen worden bezocht.

VINTAGE SHOPPEN IN KALLIO

Helsinki is een waar vintage paradijs en met name in de wijk Kallio stikt het van de leuke tweedehands winkels. Een leuk alternatief voor de dure designwinkels in het centrum, en met een beetje geluk scoor je zelfs een mooi bordje van Marimekko of Iittala. Mijn favoriete winkels in Kallio zijn Kaupahuone Keko voor prullaria in huis en Ansa Second Hand.

MET DE BOOT NAAR SUOMENLINNA

Wil je een uitstapje maken tijdens je stedentrip Helsinki? Een excursie naar Suomenlinna is een goede tip . Deze reusachtige vesting ligt voor de kust van Helsinki en staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Je kunt er heerlijk wandelen, maar ook een museum bezoeken of genieten van de mooie zonsondergang. Er gaat vier keer per uur een boot en de reis duurt ongeveer 15 minuten.

Tip: Met de Helsinki Card kun je gratis de boot naar Suomenlinna nemen.

BRUNCHEN BIJ SANDRO

Ben je op zoek naar een leuk restaurant in Helsinki? Mijn favoriete plek is Sandro, waar ze de lekkerste gerechten uit het Midden-Oosten serveren. Je kunt aanschuiven voor een diner, maar leuker is het om een tafeltje te reserveren voor de brunch op zaterdag of zondag . Voor ongeveer 25 euro kun je jezelf tonnetjerond eten aan de Israëlische salades, groentegerechten à la Ottolenghi en flinke klodders hummus.

NAAR DE SAUNA

Tijdens een reis naar Finland moet je natuurlijk een bezoekje hebben gebracht aan de sauna. In Helsinki kan dat onder andere in de wijk Kallio. Hier vind je de Kotiharjun Sauna, een plek die erg geliefd is onder de lokale bevolking . Het is de enige houtgestookte sauna in het centrum van de stad, al kun je er ook terecht voor massages en schoonheidsbehandelingen. En leuk om te zien: sauna-gangers zitten vaak met een handdoekje om hun heupen op het bankje bij de ingang, waar ze na afloop genieten van een biertje in de frisse buitenlucht. Een voorbeeld dat doet volgen.

FINSE DELICATESSEN PROEVEN IN DE MARKTHAL

Voor goed Fins eten moet je in een van de twee markthallen zijn. De Kauppatori markthal is gelegen in de haven en een tikkeltje toeristisch. Toch is het een aanrader om hier even binnen te kijken, want je hebt er tal van leuke eettentjes waar je kan aanschuiven voor een relatief goedkope lunch . Zelf vind ik vooral de markthal in Kallio een aanrader: bij Hakaniemi Kauppahalli liggen de lekkerste Finse delicatessen in de vitrines. Grote hompen rendierenvlees, geurende kaneelbroodjes en paarsroze zalm die rechtstreeks uit de zee komt. Ook hier vind je een aantal eettentjes, maar het is ook leuk om iets mee te nemen voor een picknick.

TIP: STREET FOOD FESTIVALS

Er worden het gehele jaar leuke evenementen georganiseerd en ik kan het aanraden om de evenementenkalender in de gaten te houden. Mijn weekendje Helsinki valt bijvoorbeeld samen met Street Food Festival Streat . MAAK EEN DAGTRIP NAAR TALLIN

Helsinki is relatief klein en compact, en in twee dagen heb je de meeste bezienswaardigheden wel gezien. Toch is het leuk om iets langer te blijven en op de derde dag een uitstapje te maken naar de stad Tallinn in Estland. Tallinn ligt namelijk op zo’n twee uur varen van Helsinki en het is zeker de moeite waard om een dagje op en neer te gaan. Een retourtje kost 32 euro , maar dat geld heb je er heel snel uit. 6 BUDGET TIPS VOOR EEN STEDENTRIP HELSINKI

Een weekendje Helsinki is niet goedkoop en hoe hou je het betaalbaar? Hieronder vind je vijf tips.

1. Kies voor een appartement met een eigen keuken en ruimte om te eten. Het scheelt enorm veel geld als je niet elke ochtend buiten de deur hoeft te ontbijten. Wij kozen er ook regelmatig voor om ’s avonds in ons eigen appartement een biertje te drinken in plaats van in de kroeg.

2. Plan je stedentrip Helsinki in de zomer, als je lekker veel buiten kan zijn. Je kan gaan picknicken in het park en er zijn veel (gratis) evenementen. En het scheelt ook heel erg veel geld als je niet hoeft te gaan schuilen in een prijzig café.

3. Een biertje in de kroeg kost in Helsinki ontzettend veel geld, maar in de speciale alcoholwinkels vallen de prijzen reuze mee. Wil je de dag afsluiten met een lekker drankje? Doe boodschappen en ga lekker naar het park, of maak het met drankjes en hapjes gezellig in je eigen appartement.

4. Toch de kroeg in? Pak de tram en ga naar Kallio , waar de prijzen nog enigszins betaalbaar zijn. Hier betaal je tussen de 5 en 10 euro voor een biertje in de kroeg. En dat is een stuk betaalbaarder dan in de bars in downtown Helsinki.

5. Ben je van plan veel bezienswaardigheden in Helsinki te bezoekenn? Schaf een Helsinki Card aan. Met deze kaart kun je namelijk gratis het Design Museum, het Nationale Museum en Suomenlinna bezoeken. Maar ook gratis met het OV reizen en krijg je korting bij veel restaurants. Een Helsinki Card kost € 49 en is te koop via Getyourguide .

6. Maak een dagtripje naar de stad Tallinn (Estland). Het geld voor de boottocht heb je er na een dagje struinen en lekker eten en drinken makkelijk uit.

Klinkt lekker relaxed allemaal :) Wij deden de trip een paar jaar geleden andersom. Vanuit Tallinn een dagje naar Helsinki. Ikzelf had erg weinig met Helsinki. Wat je al zegt, er is weinig spannends te zien en/of te doen. Tallinn daarentegen vond ik een heerlijke stad!

Ja misschien achteraf beter anders kunnen verdelen, maar gelukkig heb ik me wel vermaakt ;)!

Ik wil ook de combi Helsinki en Talinn maken, staan allebei hoog op mijn lijstje. Ik las een tijdje geleden bij The Travel Tester een artikel over Helsinki en sindsdien ben ik zéééér interested in alles wat met deze stad te maken heeft.

Leuk! Er staat net weer een nieuw artikel over Helsinki online, dus wie weet wakkert het nog meer aan ;)!

Precies mijn idee bij Helsinki, wat is daar te doen? Niet heel veel dus. Maar Tallinn staat wel hoog op mijn lijstje. Dit lijkt me een prachtige stad met mooie dwaalstraatjes. Ik kijk uit naar je post over deze stad!

Interessant om te lezen! Ik had nog niet echt een beeld bij Helsinki en nu is me duidelijk waardoor dat komt: er is gewoonweg niet zo veel om je een beeld van te vormen ;). Maar goed, soms is het stiekem toch ook heerlijk om niks te doen en gewoon 2 dagen rond te dwalen en lekker te eten? Het klinkt in ieder geval alsof jullie een heel relaxte stedentrip gehad hebben!

Jaa dat is ook heerlijk! Ik heb me goed vermaakt en ben lekker bijgekomen, ook fijn :)!

Wat leuk om te lezen! Ik wist helemaal niets van Helsinki en ik was dan ook benieuwd wat jij ervan zou vinden. Soms is het ook gewoon fijn als je niet als een gek alle hotspots af hoeft te rennen en lekker kunt relaxen. Tallinn lijkt me trouwens echt fantastisch, daar wil ik heel graag eens naartoe!

Ja dat is stiekem echt heel erg chill. Tallin was een wereld van verschil, maar kan ik absoluut aanraden.

Helsinki staat niet echt hoog op mijn lijstje, maar dat hoeft zo te lezen ook niet echt. De combinatie met Tallinn lijkt me dan we weer erg leuk! En wat balen van je eerste keer met Finnair. Een bruiloft missen is wel heeel zuur!

Ja dat was wel even slikken inderdaad, maar inmiddels vergeten en vergeven ;)!

Oh, een bruiloft missen klinkt heel vervelend. Ondanks een compensatie voor vliegtickets! Maar niets aan te doen… Helsinki heb ik nooit bezocht, maar ik ben wel benieuwd naar het land. Alle Finnen die ik heb ontmoet waren allemaal een beetje gek, al bedoel ik dit wel positief ;-) Finland is voor mijn gevoel dus ook een beetje anders dan andere landen!

Ik ben ook nog heel erg benieuwd naar de rest van het land. Misschien ooit terug voor een road trip :)!

Wauw, dit is echt precies zoals ik me bij Helsinki voelde. En Tallinn trouwens ook, die stad was echt heerlijk vergeleken met Helsinki.. Hoewel Helsinki uiteindelijk toch ook wel íets heeft ;)

Ja dat weet ik wel zeker. Het was bij mij ook heel erg koud, dan is zo’n stad ook al anders natuurlijk.

Zit er super goed uit! Ik ga binnenkort op verrassingsvakantie en ik hoop stiekem dat het een Scandinavische stad zal zijn! Ze staan namelijk flink op mijn wishlist, maar ik kan mijn reisgenoten er nog niet echt van overtuigen ;)

hi. Ik had hoge verwachting van Helsinki. Beetje domper dit :-) idee is een week helsinki en tallinn te doen. Naja lets see! Wel in de zomer.

Dat scheelt heel veel denk ik! Die twee zijn sowieso goed te combineren!

Wat een fijne compensatie voor zo’n horror vlucht! Helsinki lijkt mij prachtig, je hebt mijn wanderlust in ieder geval dik aangewakkerd.

Ik ben ook enorm benieuwd naar deze stad! Wel jammer te lezen dat het qua bezienswaardigheden etc. wat tegenvalt… Hoorde inderdaad ook al eens dat je voor een goedkoop weekendje weg beter ergens anders naartoe kunt, haha! Fijn dat de vlucht deze keer wel goed verliep, is wel van belang zeg maar!

Goedkoop is het niet inderdaad, al vond ik het nog wel meevallen uiteindelijk. Had me erger voorgesteld..

Oh my, elandbiefstuk. Dat klinkt te gek. Mooie foto’s. Finland lijkt me tof, maar dan vooral het Laplanddeel. Of ik nou naar Helsinki zou willen nu, dat weet ik eigenlijk niet :)

Lapland lijkt mij ook heel erg mooi. Gaat vast nog wel een keer gebeuren :)!

Leuk verslag! En inderdaad herkenbaar. Ik was er afgelopen december en vond het ook wat lastig om Helsinki in woorden te vatten. Al vond ik er wel een heel fijne sfeer hangen!

Ik ben drie jaar geleden in Helsinki geweest en het is zeker een plaats waar ik naar terug zou willen. Klein en overzichtelijk, maar ook bruisend en gezellig. Het is een relatief jonge stad en dat merk je inderdaad ook aan de gebouwen. Toch vind ik het een heel boeiende architectuur, zeker die mix van Scandinavische en Russische invloeden. De bezienswaardigheden vond ik eigenlijk best meevallen. Voor wie, zoals ik, geïnteresseerd is in design en architectuur, is Helsinki een droom: Het designmuseum, het designdistrict, de woning van Alvar Aalto, enz… Ik zou ook een overtocht naar het rustige eilandje Suomenlinna aanraden. Maar helaas: Helsinki is pokkeduur! Dan is Tallinn inderdaad een verademing voor de portemonnee:-)

Leuke reactie, dank! Het designdistrict vond ik heel erg leuk om doorheen te lopen, daar komt nog een aparte post over. Suomenlinna hebben we bewust niet gedaan omdat het vrij koud was, en dan loop liever door stedelijk gebied :)!

Wat een leuk verslag weer! En tof dat jullie nog een uitstapje hebben gemaakt naar Tallinn :) En gelukkig hebben jullie een fijne vlucht gehad; niets zo naar als een vervelende/enge vlucht!

Ja ben blij dat we alsnog besloten hebben ook Tallin mee te pakken, was een leuke aanvulling!

Jeetje wat een verhaal van die vlucht! Klinkt niet best! Maar even los daarvan: een citytrip naar Helsinki lijkt me onwijs leuk! Zo benieuwd naar die stad!

Het voelde ook niet heel best die vlucht ;). Maar fijn dat het dit keer wel goed ging!

Super leuk om te lezen! Ik ben er erg benieuwd naar, nog niet geweest. En wat klinkt die vlucht eng, bah! Had je geen recht op 640 euro cash per persoon zoals bij dit soort vertragingen? Vaak proberen airlines je af te schepen met vouchers, terwijl je daar wel recht op hebt. Zo heb ik al 2x 640 euro mogen innen bij vertragingen. Maar goed, je hebt ze wel leuk besteed! :)

Ik vond zelf dat ik er recht op had, maar vanwege een vogel in de motor was het overmacht helaas. Uiteindelijk nog een bureautje ingehuurd, maar die konden er helaas ook niets meer van maken. Maar achteraf gezien was het ook prima zo!

Klinkt erg goed. Ben er ook super benieuwd naar, sowieso die kant op te gaan, heb ik nog te weinig van gezien. En die vlucht.. oh my, ik ben al wat bangig voor vliegen, maar poeh als ik dat lees.

Ik ben ook niet meer zo’n fan van vliegen sinds dit incident ;).

Wat leuk om te lezen dit. Ik studeer namelijk voor één semester in Helsinki en hoewel het inderdaad geen spectaculaire bezienswaardigheden heeft ben ik dol op Suomenlinna (was overigens een hele grote aanrader), de rust in de stad en lente komt eindelijk tevoorschijn dus het gras wordt eindelijk weer groen. Enige grote nadeel: de goed gevulde portemonnee. Ik had in dat opzicht beter in Tallinn kunnen studeren :)

Leuk om te horen en wat cool dat je er studeert! Suomenlinna hebben we nog wel over getwijfeld om te bezoeken, maar ik vond het iets te koud om daar rond te zwerven. Lijkt me wel mooi van de zomer.

Hey! Leuk stukje (en leuke website in het algemeen). Wilde alleen even zeggen dat Finland officieel geen Scandinavië is. Dat zijn alleen Noorwegen, Zweden en Denemarken. Finland behoort samen met Scandinavië en IJsland en de Farao Eilanden tot de Nordic Countries. De Finse taal heeft bijvoorbeeld ook veel minder verwantschap met het Zweeds/Noors/Deens dan die drie Scandinavische talen onderling hebben.

He, dankjewel voor je berichtje en aanvulling! Wist ik namelijk niet, ik dacht altijd dat Finland onder Scandinavië werd gerekend. Ik ga het aanpassen :)!

15 Best Things to Do in Helsinki (Finland)

Finland’s capital was founded in the 16th century but the city you see today really took shape in the 1800s. This was when the Russians laid out Helsinki along similar lines to St. Petersburg, with its broad streets and neoclassical mansions.

A little earlier the Swedes had completed Soumenlinna, an ambitious sea fortress that was intended to keep the Russians at bay. This huge project is still intact and is just one of a catalogue of exciting things to track down in Helsinki. Find time to see some modern architecture too; the Temppeliaukio Church is out of this world.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Helsinki :

1. Suomenlinna

Board the ferry from Kauppatori and in a few minutes you’ll be in one of the most amazing man-made places in Scandinavia, if not the world.

Suomenlinna is a giant maritime fortress spread across seven islands.

It was put up by the Swedes in the mid-1800s to defend their eastern territories, but Helsinki was overrun by the Russians at the start of the 19th century.

It’s no exaggeration to say that almost nothing has changed at Suomenlinna since then.

Amid the star-shaped walls and gun positions is a small baroque settlement that is still home to 1000 people.

2. Helsinki Cathedral

The tall green dome of this landmark soars above the Helsinki cityscape, and from the water at night itseems to shine like a beacon.

Whatever your reason for visiting Helsinki, this whitewashed neoclassical cathedral is one of the sights you need to check out.

When it was built it in the mid-19th century was called St. Nicholas’ Cathedral, in honour of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I who was also Grand Duke of Finland.

After Finnish independence in 1917 it simply became Helsinki Cathedral.

3. Esplanadi

Known to locals as “Espa”, this is a finger of green space right in the middle of the city, a place where tourists and Helsinki residents come to take picnics, relax and be entertained in summer.

At this time of year the space in front of Cafe Kappeli is the Espa Stage, an outdoor venue with an exciting schedule of shows and live music performances.

Come in July for Jazz-Espa, a month-long jazz festival, or in June for the Marimekko Fashion Show.

4. Temppeliaukio Church

Safe to say there aren’t many churches in the world quite like this one.

Temppeliaukio was the result of a post-war design competition, won by Suomalainen Brothers and was inaugurated in 1969.

The building is partly underground and has been hewn from the bedrock, which forms the interior walls.

Around the central dome is a circular skylight, through which sunlight floods into the main chamber during the day.

Every piece of decoration and furniture inside this remarkable church was designed by the architects.

Approaching it along Fredrikinkatu, the broad copper dome of Temppeliaukio Church will look like some sort of alien invasion.

5. Seurasaari Island

Taking up a whole island a few kilometres north of the city centre is an open-air museum that has put together a collection of typical Finnish buildings from around the country.

The museum is open all summer and this is when trained guides are decked in traditional garb can tell you about life and work in rural Finland over the last 400 years.

The old workshops, farms, manor houses and cottages are connected by a network of trails, making for gentle walks through woodland or next to the coast.

6. Uspenski Cathedral

If you’re looking for sights that illustrate Russia’s century-long engagement with Finland, this orthodox cathedral in Pormestarinrinne is the best place to begin.

It’s the largest orthodox church in western Europe, sitting on a rise in the Katajanokka, one of Helsinki’s upmarket areas.

From the outside the church’s origins are unmistakable when you see its red-brick towers and their golden cupolas.

Take a look at the Iconostasis, with its set of beautiful paintings depicting the virgin Mary and an array of saints.

7. Old Market Hall

Open all day, Monday to Saturday, the Old Market Hall near the water in Eteläranta has been around since 1889.

Before then there had never been a permanent building for Helsinki’s markets, which were open-air and held in squares.

It’s a striking byzantine revival building, worth checking out even if you don’t need to do any shopping.

If you would like to pick something up you’ll be tempted by all sorts of stalls selling fresh produce including meat, fish, fruit and veg, but also Finnish cakes and cheeses.

8. Urban Sauna visit

Sauna is a Finnish word, and there are three million of them in Finland, a large quantity of which are found right here in Helsinki.

Many are open to the public, and whether you’re visiting in winter or summer, it’s just one of those things you have to try in Finland.

For public saunas try the districts of Kotiharju, Merihaka,  Hermanni, or the new “Löyly” complex at the southern end of Helsinki peninsula.

There’s some sauna etiquette to remember but none of it is too difficult: Men and women are usually separate, naked is best but towels are allowed, and it’s usually best to keep your voice low if you have to talk at all!

9. Linnanmäki

This amusement park has been open for more than 65 years.

Throughout that time it has been donating all profits to Päivän Säätiö, a Finnish child welfare charity.

Well over a million visitors a year come to ride the white-knuckle roller coasters, try their luck in the amusement arcades or bring their kids to all kinds of child-friendly shows and attractions.

All the major rides at Linnanmäki break Finnish records: The highest and fastest in the country are set here, but among them are seven that go right back to the park’s origins in the 1950s.

10. Crayfish parties

From late-July to the end of August Helsinki’s citizens dress up in their finest and pack out the city’s seafood restaurants.

This is crayfish season, and the shellfish is paired with Akvavit in a surprisingly complicated set of rituals.

Waiters at local restaurants will be happy to fill you in about how to eat crayfish the right way, and when to take a shot of Akvavit.

And then of course come the drinking songs. It might be a bit more of a challenge to sing along with these.

11. Vintage Tram Ride

Catch this tram from the Havis Amanda Fountain at Market Square on summer weekends.

You’ll set off on a 20-minute tour of nearly all of central Helsinki’s top sights.

These heritage trams are a century old, and although there’s no guide on board you’ll be provided with a multi-language leaflet to let you know what you’re looking at.

The trailer pulled by the main tram car will also give you some excellent shots of the city for your instagram account!

12. Seaside amble

Another great way to see the best of Helsinki is along the waterfront as there’s a seven kilometre trail that runs from end to end.

Heading down the eastern side of the Helsinki peninsula your walk will begin at Hietaniemi Beach, which on the warmest summer days is the best sandy bay in Helsinki.

Later you’ll pass the Sibelius Monument, an abstract sculpture to commemorate Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius.

The waterfront path is served by ice cream sellers in summer and is always leafy, winding through parks or next to the grounds of the Prime Minister’s summer residence.

13. Helsinki design

Going back to the post-war era Helsinki is a city that embraces cutting-edge architecture and design.

The Rock Cathedral illustrates this attitude best, but there’s a thriving culture that really deserves a bit of investigation.

Check out the Design District just below the Esplanadi: Across just a few city blocks are some 200 design-oriented shops, galleries, buildings and attractions.

The Design Museum is here and documents Finnish architecture and design over the last 150 years.

14. National Museum of Finland

Since you’re visiting the capital you have to take the chance to find out about Finland’s past.

One section that will catch the interest of all comers contains the Treasure Troves.

As you make your way through these nine rooms you can goggle at silver, jewellery, coins, medals and armour.

Further on you’ll see how Finnish culture and society developed during the middle ages before it became part of the Swedish Kingdom and then the Russian Empire.

There are also intriguing exhibits covering the country’s early civilisations, among them a neolithic offering stone and an Iron Age burial cist.

15. Wooden House Districts

As the city grew in the early-20th century Helsinki built whole neighbourhoods for its working class.

Many of these have since been demolished and replaced, but several remain, and the pretty painted timber houses here are now homes for Helsinki’s bohemian and creative types.

Areas like Puu Vallila have coffee shops and trendy bars, while Puu-Käpylä  is loved for its green space.

This suburb was intended as a Garden City, so there’s loads of greenery and the vegetable plots allocated for workers are now urban farms.

Stedentrip Helsinki: 4 wandelingen langs heel veel bezienswaardigheden

Wat was het heerlijk om terug te zijn in Helsinki! Toen ik in 2017 terugkwam van een tripje naar de Finse hoofdstad voor mijn werk, zei ik meteen tegen mijn man dat ik dacht dat hij het ook een geweldige stad zou vinden. We moesten er echt eens samen naartoe! Nu was het zover, ter gelegenheid van onze 12,5-jarige trouwdag. En wat hadden we het fijn! De wandelroutes langs bezienswaardigheden in Helsinki die ik tijdens mijn eerste stedentrip had afgelegd, zaten gelukkig nog aardig in mijn hoofd. En we maakten kennis met wat nieuwe aanwinsten, mede dankzij een wandeling met een My Helsinki Guide . Ons hotel ( Clarion ) stond vlak bij het hotel waar ik de vorige keer had verbleven en opnieuw konden we zo het centrum in lopen, of voor de deur op de tram stappen om aan een van de vier wandelingen te beginnen. Hier zijn heel veel bezienswaardigheden in Helsinki in vier wandelingen door de stad.

Tip: wil je je laten rondleiden door een local die alle bekende en onbekende pareltjes in Helsinki kent? Dat regel je heel makkelijk  via  With  Locals . 1. Bezienswaardigheden in het centrum van Helsinki

Het startpunt van deze wandeling, de  Hietalahti-markt , lag tijdens beide trips vlak bij mijn hotel. Binnen vind je klassieke houten stalletjes met daarin alles van de lekkerste soep tot kaneelbroodjes – ja, de Finnen houden ook wel van een fika op z’n tijd! Hier zou ik nog regelmatig terugkomen om even bij te tanken tijdens of na het verkennen van de stad.

Vanaf deze markthal loop je over Bulevardi recht op het centrum af. Onderweg kom je onder andere een mooie kerk tegen met een oud kerkhof dat nu een park is.

Ook kom je langs bakkerij Ekberg – een begrip in Helsinki. Er worden nog recepten gebruikt uit de tijd van de Russische tsaren.

Eventueel kun je even een zijstraat in slaan, want in Fredrikskatu zijn veel leuke winkeltjes te vinden. Als je dan uiteindelijk Bulevardi uit loopt, kom je op Esplanadi : een brede straat met in het midden een langgerekt park en langs de randen statige gebouwen. Aan de kant waar je aankomt, staat het Zweedse Theater van Helsinki – ik hou van deze bouwstijl.

Let ook op het sierlijke theehuis dat op Esplanadi staat. De naam, Kappeli, is afkomstig van een herder die hier vroeger een hutje had, waar hij warm bleef en zijn melk verkocht. Esplanadi was toen een weide aan de rand van de stad.

Aan Esplanadi vind je het toeristische informatiepunt van Helsinki . In de zijstraat Kluuvikatu moet je echt even binnenstappen bij Fazer . Daar vind je de lekkerste chocola van Finland. Ik proefde toen ik er alleen was op aanraden van een local de chocoladetaart met een vleugje rode peper en deze keer vierden we er onze trouwdag met zo’n waanzinnig legger chocoladegebakje.

Als je daarvan nog niet vol zit, kun je aan het uiteinde van Esplanadi (aan marktplein Kauppatori ) de Oude Markthal binnen stappen. Ook hier weer klassieke houten stalletjes met allerlei lekkers. Zo hebben ze bij Story koffiebroodjes met vanille en drop. Koffie en thee mag je zo vaak bijschenken als je wilt, net als water. Dat is op veel plekken in Helsinki zo. Als je een plekje bij het raam hebt, kijk je uit over zee en de archipel.

Hier vertrekken ook de boten naar eilandfort Suomenlinna (zie wandeling 4) en je ziet er de boten van de snelle verbindingen met Stockholm en Tallinn . Kijk als je weer buiten staat nog even rustig om je heen, want aan Kauppatori staan prachtige gebouwen.

Als je vanaf Esplanadi nog even rechtuit loopt, kom je in  Katajanokka . Daar kun je de Russisch-Orthodoxe Uspenski-kathedraal niet missen. Het is de grootste Russisch-Orthodoxe kerk in West-Europa. De uivormige koepels stellen eigenlijk vlammen voor, die Jezus en de 12 apostelen vertegenwoordigen.

Ook vind je in Katajanokka veel mooie Jugendstilgebouwen, en het reuzenrad van Helsinki: het SkyWheel .

Loop dan terug richting Kauppatori. Achter die gebouwen aan dit marktplein zie je de koepel van de Domkerk (Tuomiokirkko) al. Als je een van de straatjes in die richting in loopt, sta je al gauw op het Senaatsplein ( Senaatintori ). Behalve de Domkerk staan hier nog meer indrukwekkende gebouwen. In het midden staat een standbeeld van Tsaar Alexander II.

Aan het Senaatsplein staat ook het Stadsmuseum van Helsinki , dat onder andere het oudste stenen huis van Helsinki omvat. Het museum is gratis toegankelijk en geeft een beeld van de geschiedenis van Helsinki op een manier die voor jong en oud leuk is.

Loop zeker even de straat links achter de Domkerk in voor een bezoekje aan universiteitsbibliotheek Kaisa Talo. Wat een mooi gebouw!

Loop dan terug naar het Senaatsplein (bij de Domkerk dus) en loop winkelstraat Aleksanterinkatu in. In dit winkelgebied kom je natuurlijk een winkel van het beroemde Finse merk Marimekko tegen, maar ook het grootste warenhuis van de Noordse landen: Stockmann. De Finnen zeggen zelfs: “Als Stockmann het niet heeft, heb je het niet nodig.”

Zelf vond ik de academische boekhandel Akateeminen Kirjakauppa erg mooi. Die is ontworpen door de beroemde Finse architect en designer Alvar Aalto. Handig: er is een ondergrondse doorgang tussen de academische boekhandel en Stockmann.

Neem tenslotte nog even een kijkje bij het  Centraal Station van Helsinki met zijn groene klokkentoren. Leuk om te weten dat je hier op de trein naar Moskou en Sint-Petersburg kunt stappen, maar ook de 1000 kilometer lange reis naar Rovaniemi schijnt een hele ervaring te zijn.

Schuin tegenover het station staat kunstmusem Ateneum en in de winter kun je hier schaatsen op het plein. Tijd over? Aan de achterkant van het Centraal Station ligt een botanische tuin.

2. Bezienswaardigheden ten zuiden van het centrum van Helsinki

Ook dit stadsdeel was goed lopend bereikbaar vanuit ons hotel. Dit deel van de stad is groot geworden door de scheepsbouw en toen ik de kade volgde, kwam ik dan ook eerst langs een heleboel hijskranen. Maar uiteindelijk werd het minder industrieel. Hier staat ook de designsauna Löyli en dit schattige rode huisje aan de Finse golf.

Lopend langs het water had ik aan mijn rechterhand de zee en de archipel. Aan de linkerkant zag ik de ambassadewijk, waar veel Jugendstilvilla’s staan.

Hier is ook een jachthaven en kun je al enkele van de eilandjes voor de kust van Helsinki zien liggen. (Voor meer eilandleven kun je een rondvaart tussen de eilanden maken.)

In dit stadsdeel vind je, als je weer van het water af en richting het centrum loopt, ook twee interessante musea. Eerst kom je bij het Architectuurmuseum . Op de permanente tentoonstelling wordt de veelzijdigheid aan architectuur in Helsinki van 1900-1970 uitgelicht, ingedeeld per decennium.

Vlak bij het Architectuurmuseum, tegenover een opvallende kerk met twee spitse torens, staat het Designmuseum . Dit museum heeft ook een fijn museumcafé en een museumwinkel om hebberig van te worden.

De musea staan in Design District Helsinki, waar je ook veel leuke winkeltjes met mode en interieurdesign aantreft.

3. Bezienswaardigheden ten noorden van centrum van Helsinki

Veel van de bezienswaardigheden ten noorden van het centrum van Helsinki zijn gevestigd rondom een belangrijke verkeersader: Mannerheimintie en langs de baai Töölönlahti . Deze wandeling startte ik bij de wintertuin van Helsinki .

Je bent hier in de buurt van het Olympisch stadion  (inclusief uitkijktoren ) en het  monument voor de componist Sibelius . Hij componeerde het muziekstuk Finlandia, dat erg belangrijk voor de Finnen is geweest bij het uiten van hun eigen identiteit: “Zweden zijn we niet, Russen willen we niet zijn, dus laat ons Finnen zijn!” Anders dan wat veel mensen denken, is de vorm van het monument niet gebaseerd op een orgel, maar op boomstammen in een bos. De natuur was namelijk een grote bron van inspiratie voor Sibelius.

Als je wel een kopje koffie kunt gebruiken, is het nabijgelegen Café Regatta een aanrader.

Na een heerlijke kop warme chocolademelk met een stukje Finse bosbessentaart erbij liepen we terug naar het water van Töölönlahti, naar de Finse Nationale Opera om precies te zijn.

Aan de overkant zag ik de grote, houten villa’s in het Linnunlaulu-park en pretpark Linnanmäki.

Na een tijdje wandelen kwamen we uit bij de  Finlandia-hal , die is ontworpen door Alvar Aalto.

Rondom deze plek zijn verschillende musea en andere bezienswaardigheden gevestigd, zoals het Nationaal Museum  met oude kleding, meubels en gebruiksvoorwerpen. Het gebouw waarin het museum is gevestigd is ook de moeite waard en er is een fijn museumcafé.

Niet ver van hier staat de Tempelliaukio Kirkko (rotskerk), die is ontworpen door de broers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. In plaats van rotsen op te blazen zodat er een kerk kon worden neergezet, kozen zij ervoor de kerk in de rots te bouwen, met bovenop een koperen dak.

De kunsthal ( Taidehalli ) en het  Natuurhistorisch Museum van Helsinki zitten ook in de buurt van het Nationaal Museum, maar waren helaas gesloten toen ik er voor de deur stond. Verder zit hier nog het Taidemuseo/Helsinki Art Museum HAM , dat gevestigd is in een voormalige tennishal.

Een echte aanrader wat mij betreft is het museum voor moderne kunst Kiasma .

Ik eindigde deze wandeling in de Kamppi-stiltekapel . Ook al zo’n bijzondere plek: het lijkt wel alsof je in een soort houten cocon zit, een beschut plekje op een drukke plek in de stad.

Andere bezienswaardigheden ten noorden van het centrum van Helsinki die niet in deze wandeling zijn opgenomen, omdat ze in een ander deel van de stad liggen, zijn de Hakaniemi-markthal en het Iittala & Arabia Design Centre . Je vindt ze wel terug op de kaart hierboven.

4. Wandeling over eilandfort Suomenlinna

Voor de vierde wandeling pak je eerst op Kauppatori de veerboot naar Suomenlinna , een van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden tijdens een stedentrip Helsinki. De boot naar Suomenlinna maakt gewoon deel uit van het openbaar vervoer, dus als je een dagkaart hebt of een Helsinki Card , mag je daarmee ook gewoon de boot pakken. Deze boot gaat in de zomer 3-4 keer per uur en de rest van het jaar 1 keer per uur. De overtocht duurt ongeveer een kwartier en vanaf de boot heb je een mooi uitzicht op Helsinki (bij vertrek) en Suomenlinna (bij aankomst).

Op Suomenlinna wonen ongeveer 800-1000 mensen, die er ook een eigen school, bibliotheek, supermarkt, kerk etc. hebben. Vandaar dus ook dat de boot het hele jaar door vaart. Er is zelfs een tunnel aangelegd tussen het vasteland van Helsinki en het eiland Suomenlinna, maar die is alleen voor leidingen en servicevoertuigen in noodgevallen. Als ik het me goed herinner, is deze tunnel te zien in de Finse serie Tellus (ze fietsen er dan stiekem doorheen).

Daarnaast is Suomenlinna een belangrijke historische bezienswaardigheid. Vanaf 1748, toen Finland deel uitmaakte van Zweden, werd hier een zeefort gebouwd om Zweden te beschermen tegen Rusland. Het kreeg de Zweedse naam Sveaborg. Helaas mocht het niet baten: in 1808 namen de Russen het fort in. Een jaar later ging heel Finland deel uitmaken van Rusland en dat zou meer dan 100 jaar zo blijven. In 1918 werd het fort van onafhankelijk Finland en kreeg het de Finse naam Suomenlinna.

Op het eiland bevinden zich 6 musea (onder andere over de geschiedenis van het fort en over speelgoed), winkels en galerieën en verschillende cafés en restaurants.

Er is een wandelroute aangelegd vanaf de plek waar de veerboot aankomt langs de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden: als je de blauwe bordjes volgt, kom je er vanzelf.

Voor de onderzeeër en het speelgoedmuseum moet je een beetje van de route afwijken, maar ook daarnaar verwijzen bordjes.

Tijd voor jouw stedentrip Helsinki?

Je ziet het, we keken onze ogen uit in Helsinki. Ik werd de tweede keer alleen nog maar gekker op de Finse hoofdstad en ik hoop dat ik je dat met mijn verslag van deze vier wandelingen een beetje heb kunnen meegeven. Hopelijk heb je er iets aan als je zelf naar Helsinki gaat. Doen hoor!

Vliegen naar en overnachten in Helsinki

Hier vergelijk je makkelijk vluchten naar Helsinki . Ik sliep de eerste keer in het  Radisson Blu Seaside Hotel Helsinki  en de tweede keer in het  Clarion Hotel . Beide hotels zijn mooi en liggen op loopafstand of een paar tramhaltes van het centrum.

Bezienswaardigheden in Helsinki

Ik schafte zelf een Helsinki Card aan voor mijn bezoek aan Helsinki. Die kun je hier van tevoren  online regelen . Hiermee mocht ik gebruikmaken van het openbaar vervoer, mee met een bustour , kreeg ik toegang tot veel musea en golden er allerlei kortingen. (Kijk voor aankoop even goed wat op dit moment wel en niet inbegrepen is).

Uitstapjes vanuit Helsinki

• Neem de veerboot naar Tallinn
• Ga een halve dag  of een hele dag naar nationaal park Nuuksio
• Of bezoek het rendierpark van Nuuksio
• Bekijk de houten huisjes van het oude stadje  Porvoo
• Ga wandelen in nationaal park Sipoonkorpi

De rotskerk is mooi en bijzonder om te zien en ook de boekhandel lijkt mij een bezoek waard. Maar dat laatste komt natuurlijk doordat ik me met boeken bezighoud. Een paradijsje voor boekenliefhebbers, denk ik.

Ja, Helsinki lijkt me echt een mooie stad om op verkenning uit te gaan.

De Finse hoofdstad Helsinki is bij de meeste mensen niet direct de eerste keuze voor een citytrip. En toch is een stedentrip Helsinki erg leuk als je eens wat anders wilt zien dan de bekende citytrip bestemmingen van Europa. De prachtige ligging aan de kust met maar liefst 300 eilanden, mooie natuurgebieden niet ver bij de stad vandaan, gevarieerde architectuur en een gezellige haven zijn genoeg redenen om de stad te bezoeken. Je kunt je hiermee prima een paar dagen vermaken tijdens een weekend Helsinki! Wil jij weten wat je niet mag missen op je citytrip? We delen de leukste bezienswaardigheden voor je stedentrip Helsinki!

1. De eerste bezienswaardigheid van Helsinki vanaf de boot: de haven!

Wanneer je met de boot vanuit Tallin in Helsinki aankomt, beland je direct in het bruisende hart van Helsinki. Kom je vanaf de luchthaven, dan is de haven zeker een leuke stop om jouw stedentrip Helsink in Finland te beginnen. De haven is een levendig gebied waar je bootjes en cruiseschepen kunt bekijken en een bezoek kunt brengen aan het openluchtzwembad. Maar je kunt er ook ontzettend lekker (en goedkoop!) eten. Iedere dag is er een gezellige markt (de Kauppatori markt) en kun je je tegoed doen aan een complete maaltijd met verse vis, aardappelen en groenten voor nog geen € 10,-. Dus als je goedkoop Helsinki wilt beleven, is de haven de plek waar je moet zijn voor heerlijk eten. Ook vertrekken vanuit de haven de veerboten naar de eilanden van de stad en naar omliggende landen als Estland, Noorwegen en Zweden.

2. Must-visit voor foodies in Helsinki: de oude markthal Kauppahalli

Bij de haven van Helsinki vind je ook de old market hall, Kauppahalli. Zeker voor foodies één van de must-visit Helsinki bezienswaardigheden. De oude markthal is een prachtig gebouw waarin je tientallen food-stalletjes vindt. Van koffie- en lunchtentjes tot ontbijt, Kauppahalli is een fijne plek om even wat te eten en op te warmen op een koude dag. Ook is er een groot aantal stalletjes dat ingeblikt vlees en vis verkoopt, zoals rendier, eland en zelfs beer(!). Goedkoop zijn deze delicatessen niet, maar een kleurrijk gezicht zijn de rijen blikjes wel. Let op, de markthal is doordeweeks geopend van 8.00 tot 18.00 uur en op zaterdag van 8.00 tot 16.00 uur. Je kunt er dus niet terecht voor het diner tijdens je stedentrip Helsinki en ook op zondag is de old market gesloten.

3. Eilandhoppen tijdens je stedentrip Helsinki: kies uit maar liefst 300 eilanden

Met maar liefst 300 eilanden voor de kust is een eilandhoptour een must-do tijdens je stedentrip Helsinki. Vanuit de haven vertrekken er dagelijks op verschillende tijdstippen tours en veerboten die je naar een aantal verschillende eilanden kunnen brengen. Het is een soort hop-on-hop-off systeem. Het rondje dat onze veerboot aflegde was Klippan – Vallisaari Skanslandet – Suomenlinna. Klippan is een klein eiland met alleen een restaurant dat in de zomer geopend is. Dit restaurant schijnt wel erg goed te zijn en is daarmee een leuke (lunch)stop voor een Helsinki stedentrip in de zomer. Zelf hebben wij dit mini-eiland overgeslagen en zijn we direct doorgevaren naar Vallisaari Skanslandet. Dit eiland kun je in één á twee uur helemaal rondlopen. Je wandelt dan door bossen, langs een meertje en een uitzichtpunt dat een prachtig uitzicht biedt op het derde eiland van de trip,  Suomenlinna. Suomenlinna is het grootste en meest bezochte eiland van de drie. Hier vind je het oude fort van Helsinki en diverse restaurants. Je kunt hier rondwandelen en genieten van mooie uitzichten. Een ander eiland dat veel mensen bezoeken tijdens hun Helsinki stedentrip is Seurasaari. Dit is het openluchtmuseum van de stad. Hier vind je nog veel traditionele, oude huisjes.

4. Domkerk van Helsinki en het senaatplein

Een markant gebouw dat je zeker niet zal ontgaan tijdens je stedentrip Helsinki is de domkerk. Een gigantische witte kerk met groene koepels dat ver boven de omliggende gebouwen uitrijst. Niet alleen is het leuk om even binnen te kijken in het imposante gebouw, maar het is ook de moeite waard de trappen op te klimmen en vanaf daar op het senaatplein neer te kijken. Bij mooi weer is dit dan ook een fijne plek om mensen te kijken in het zonnetje.

5. De grote Russisch-Orthodoxe Oespensi-kathedraal

Een ander gebouw dat je veel in de lijstjes met top 10 Helsinki bezienswaardigheden terugvindt is de Oespenski-kathedraal. En ook dit is niet zonder reden. De architectuur van de kathedraal is van een totaal andere orde dan de domkerk, maar daarmee niet minder indrukwekkend. De Russisch-Orthodoxe kathedraal doet een beetje theatraal aan en is al vanaf de haven te zien. Niet zo gek, want het is de grootste Russisch-Orthodoxe kathedraal van heel West- en Noord-Europa.

6. Shoppen in Helsinki: Scandinavisch design overal

Ben jij een echte design-liefhebber, dan moet je zeker een stedentrip Helsinki maken. De stad barst namelijk van de design shops en er is zelfs een wandelroute beschikbaar die je langs al deze verkooppunten van Fins design brengt. Ben je van plan iets aan te schaffen, dan moet je wel even flink in de buidel tasten, want het gaat hier vaak om chique winkels en design met een prijskaartje. Maar als je echte liefhebber bent van Scandinavisch design (en dan heb ik het niet over de Ikea), dan is het design district zeker een bezoek waard tijdens je weekendje Helsinki.

De Helsinki bezienswaardigheden in de stad zelf zijn in iets meer dan een dag te bekijken. Ben jij een lang weekend in Helsinki, dan is het daarom leuk om een uitstapje te maken naar de natuur. Want precies dat is wat de Finse hoofdstad anders maakt dan andere citytrip bestemmingen. Zo kun je met het openbaar vervoer naar national park Nuuksio reizen en daar een halve of hele dag gaan hiken. Dit kun je op eigen houtje doen ( bekijk hier meer info ), maar je kunt ook een tour met gids boeken naar het national park.

8. Helsinki verkennen met een local

Wil je Helsinki verkennen vanuit het oogpunt van een local? Boek dan een tour met lokale gids via Hi hi, guide voor je stedentrip. Je kunt jouw tour in overleg met de gids samenstellen of een van de voorgestelde tours boeken. Bijvoorbeeld als je meer wilt leren over de architectuur en design, waar Helsinki zo om bekend staat. Maar ook kun je de local vragen zijn of haar favoriete hotspots aan je te laten zien, zodat je de stad buiten de standaard toeristische bezienswaardigheden leert kennen.

Overnachten tijdens je weekend Helsinki

Ik zal er niet omheen draaien, overnachten in Helsinki is duur. Het is daarom aan te raden ruim van tevoren je hotel te boeken voor de beste deals. Er zijn ook een aantal mooie hostels in Helsinki waar je nog voor onder de honderd euro kunt overnachten. Vaak hebben deze hostels ook privé-kamers. Er zijn bovendien veel appartementen te huur in Helsinki. Je betaalt vaak hetzelfde of net iets minder dan een hotelkamer, maar je kunt dan wel zelf koken en voor je eigen ontbijt zorgen. Tip: neem vanaf het vliegveld in Nederland of vanuit Tallinn een fles wijn of andere drank mee naar Helsinki. Je kunt dan ’s avonds ook een drankje doen in je eigen appartement of hotelkamer. Zo kun je kosten besparen op je stedentrip Helsinki, want alcohol is er duur! Voor een stedentrip Helsinki heb je niet veel tijd nodig. De meeste Helsinki bezienswaardigheden kun je in een dag zien. Wanneer je dus 1,5 tot 2 dagen hebt is dat voldoende. Superleuk is het daarom om je citytrip Helsinki te combineren met een stedentrip Tallinn, Estland . De prijzen in Tallinn liggen namelijk een stuk lager en de steden zijn ontzettend goed met elkaar te combineren in één lang weekend. Dagelijks varen er veerboten tussen de twee steden die je in 3 uurtjes naar de andere kant brengen. De boot kost zo’n € 28,- per persoon. Er zijn verschillende maatschappijen. Wij namen de ferry van Viking Line, omdat deze qua prijs het meest aantrekkelijk was. Ga je met deze ferry, net als wij, om 7.00 uur ‘s ochtends (van Tallinn naar Helsinki), dan is het ontbijt op de boot een absolute aanrader om bij te boeken! Dit was nog uitgebreider dan een luxe hotel. En dat voor € 15,-. Zo kom je niet met een lege maag aan in Helsinki als je vanuit Tallinn reist, want in Helsinki liggen de prijzen een stuk hoger.

Multicitytrip Helsinki, Tallin én Riga

Heb je een (mid)week de tijd, dan kun je de vakantie Helsinki en Tallinn nog verder uitbreiden naar Riga, Letland . Vanuit Tallinn is het maar 4 uur met de bus naar Riga. De bus van LuxExpress doet er 4 uur over en kost € 21,-. Je kunt ook kiezen voor een toeristische route van een dag, zodat je nog wat sightseeing doet onderweg naar Riga. Wij maakten in de zomer deze multicitytrip, waarbij we vlogen op Riga, met de bus doorreisden naar Tallinn en vanuit daar de boot pakten naar Helsinki. Vanuit Helsinki vlogen we weer terug naar Amsterdam. Wij deden dit in 6 dagen. De combinatie van de drie steden is een absolute aanrader, maar één of twee dagen extra in de natuur doorbrengen is wel aan te raden. Het is anders wel erg veel stad in 6 dagen. Maar leuk is het zeker, want je bezoekt in korte tijd maar liefst 3 landen met allen een heel eigen karakter.

Helsinki is meestal niet de eerste keuze voor een stedentrip. Toch heeft de hoofdstad van Finland veel te bieden. Zo zijn er designwinkels, musea en parken in overvloed te vinden. Ook de rijke geschiedenis van de stad is duidelijk zichtbaar en er worden het hele jaar door festivals en evenementen georganiseerd.

Wat is er te doen in Helsinki (& omgeving)?

Met haar historische bezienswaardigheden, interessante musea en overvloedige aanwezigheid van groen is Helsinki een perfecte bestemming voor een stedentrip. Met name reizigers die drukke steden willen vermijden, biedt de hoofdstad een uitkomst. Wees echter niet bang dat je je er zal vervelen: er worden het hele jaar door festivals, concerten en speciale evenementen georganiseerd!

Om een goede eerste indruk te krijgen van Helsinki, raden we aan om er minimaal 2 nachten te verblijven. Mocht je langer de tijd hebben, kun je ook bezienswaardigheden in de omgeving ontdekken. Ga bijvoorbeeld een dagje wandelen in Nuuksio Nationaal Park of laat je verrassen door het pittoreske Porvoo. Een trip naar Tallinn – de hoofdstad van Estland – behoort eveneens tot de mogelijkheden.

Het centrum van Helsinki is er een met meerdere gezichten. Moderne architectuur wordt er afgewisseld door Russische invloeden en naast de lange winkelstraten met design stores, boutiques en galerijen bevinden zich parken met een verscheidenheid aan groen. Senaatintori wordt beschouwd als het centrale plein. Aan dit plein liggen enkele van de bekendste gebouwen van de stad, waaronder de Dom van Helsinki.

Voor een middag shoppen kun je terecht aan de Mannerheimintie , Aleksanterinkatu en Kaisaniemenkuta . Dit zijn de leukste – en drukste – winkelstraten in Helsinki. Je vindt hier een aaneenschakeling van grote merken en lokale boutiques. Ook het aantal warenhuizen is goed vertegenwoordigd en aan de waterkant – Market Square – vindt dagelijks een kleurrijke markt plaats met verse producten, souvenirs en traditioneel handwerk.

Een andere leuke plek om te bezoeken is het Narinkkatori plein . Dit levendige plein staat bekend om haar moderne architectuur en grenst aan het winkelcentrum Kamppi . Dit is het drukste winkelcentrum van Helsinki. Je vindt er zeven verdiepingen met winkels en richting de 50 cafés en restaurants. Ideaal voor een koude dag met regen of sneeuw!

Esplanadi Park.

Wie de drukte wil ontvluchten, kan een wandeling maken door Esplanadi Park . Dit groene stadspark slingert door het centrum heen en wordt omgeven door winkels, cafés en restaurants. Ook de Kamppi Kapel , beter bekend als de Kapel van de Stilte – is een fijne plek om even tot rust te komen. Ga ook zeker even kijken bij het centraal station, een van de mooiste stations ter wereld.

The Yard Hostel

Uitstekend beoordeeld hostel op 5 minuten lopen van het centraal station. Beschikt over slaapzalen en privékamers. Locatie scoort een 9,7.

In Helsinki kun je je gemakkelijk een paar dagen vermaken. De meeste bezienswaardigheden bevinden zich in of rondom het centrum. Mocht iets toch wat verder weg liggen, is er nog geen nood aan de man. De stad beschikt over een uitgebreid OV-netwerk.

De dom is een van dé bezienswaardigheden van Helsinki. Het ligt aan het Senaatsplein en behoort tot de bekendste gebouwen van Finland. De dom is al van verre te zien door haar hogere ligging en werd gebouwd tussen 1830 en 1852. Het was een eerbetoon aan de Russische tsaar Nicolaas I en heette in eerste instantie de Sint-Nicolaaskerk, totdat Finland onafhankelijk werd in 1917.

Kenmerkend is de neoclassicistische bouwstijl van het ivoorwitte bouwwerk. De schitterende gevels en Korinthische zuilen zijn kenmerkend voor de Lutherse kathedraal, evenals de groene koppels en ingangen met beelden van de twaalf apostelen. Voor de Domkerk bevinden zich grote trappen, waar mensen op zonnige dagen graag gaan zitten om van het uitzicht te genieten.

De Temppeliaukio Kerk is een bijzondere kerk uit 1969 en ligt iets ten westen van het centrum. De kerk wordt ook wel Rotskerk genoemd en bevindt zich – zoals de bijnaam al doet vermoeden – in een rotsachtige heuvel. Kenmerkend voor de rotskerk zijn de onafgewerkte wanden en de koepel van glas en koper. In de kerk worden regelmatig concerten gehouden vanwege de uitstekende akoestiek.

De Lutherse kerk is tegen betaling te bezoeken: een kaartje kost €8 en kan gekocht worden aan de kassa of via de officiële website . Houd er rekening mee dat de openingstijden kunnen variëren.

Suomenlinna is een stadsdistrict bestaande uit 8 eilanden voor de kust van Helsinki. 5 van de eilanden zijn met elkaar verbonden en de groep staat in zijn geheel op de werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco. Op de eilanden – waar zich zo’n 900 permanente bewoners gevestigd hebben – is een aantal musea te vinden. Ook het Sveaborg fort, tegenwoordig bekend als het Suomenlinna fort , bevindt zich hier.

Verder zijn er op de eilanden ook veel picknickplaatsen te vinden, evenals kunstateliers, cafés en restaurants. Op de website van Suomenlinna kun je een online guide downloaden met de leukste plekken op de eilanden. Liever ter plaatse uitzoeken wat te doen? Het bezoekerscentrum is het hele jaar door geopend. Je vindt hier een tentoonstelling over het fort en gratis brochures met een plattegrond.

• Het eiland is te bereiken met de HSL ferry . Deze ferry maakt deel uit van het OV-netwerk in Helsinki en vaart het hele jaar door. De tocht neemt ongeveer 15 minuten in beslag.
• Tickets kunnen gekocht worden bij de ticketautomaat aan de kade. Het vertrekpunt van de ferry bevindt zich aan Kauppatori Market Square .

In Helsinki is een uitgebreid aanbod restaurants te vinden. Er zit voor iedereen én ieder budget wel wat tussen. Dineren in een sterrenrestaurant behoort tot de opties en er is ook ruime keuze voor vegans. Verder is het goed om te weten dat in Helsinki een echte koffiecultuur heerst. Verspreid over de stad bevinden zich een groot aantal koffiebars. Best logisch, want nergens ter wereld consumeren mensen zoveel koffie als in Finland!

Liever een wijntje? Ook dan zit je goed in de Scandinavische hoofdstad, al ligt het prijsniveau hoger dan in Nederland. Mocht je op je budget willen letten, dan kun je ook terecht in de markthallen. In Helsinki bevinden zich drie food markets, waaronder de Old Market Hall (oudste markthal van de stad), Hakaniemi Food Hall en Hietalahti Food Market .

Een stedentrip Helsinki is goed te combineren met een bezoek aan Tallinn , de hoofdstad van Estland . De steden liggen op 80 kilometer afstand van elkaar en worden gescheiden door de Finse Golf. Het water overbruggen kan met een ferry. De overtocht neemt ongeveer twee uur in beslag.

Tallinn is relatief klein, waardoor je de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden binnen een dag kunt zien. Het hoogtepunt van deze Hanzestad is het oude middeleeuwse centrum en ook de Alexander Nevski-kathedraal is een bezoek waard. Je kunt op eigen gelegenheid naar Tallinn gaan, maar ook een georganiseerde trip boeken.

Heb je wat langer de tijd in Helsinki? Dan heb je geluk! In de hoofdstad is van alles te beleven. Naast de vele evenementen die worden georganiseerd (tip: zie de kalender op My Helsinki !), zijn er ook nog genoeg andere dingen om te zien en doen. Ateneum Art Museum.

• Fan van musea? Dan kun je in Helsinki je hart ophalen. Er bevinden zich een groot aantal musea op het gebied van kunst en cultuur . Het Ateneum Kunstmuseum en het Designmuseum behoren tot de bekendste. Andere geliefde musea zijn het Nationaal Museum van Finland, Openluchtmuseum Seurasaari, het Natuurhistorisch Museum en het Mannerheim Museum Helsinki.
• Bezoek je Helsinki in de zomer? Maak dan een wandeling in Esplanadi Park , het stadspark in het centrum. Ook een dagje naar het strand behoort tot de mogelijkheden. Hietaniemi strand – beter bekend als ‘Hietsu’ – is het populairste strand van Helsinki en ligt vlakbij het centrum.

• Design, fashion, kunst, vintage en lekker eten: het komt allemaal samen in Design District Helsinki . Het gebied in het centrum van Helsinki is een broeinest van creatieve uitspattingen. Je vindt er allerlei winkels, musea, galerijen, restaurants en showrooms . Daarnaast is het een levendige buurt waar locals ook graag komen.
• Met het hele gezin naar Helsinki? Met kinderen is het leuk om naar pretpark Linnanmäki , de Korkeasaari Zoo of het klimpark Korkee te gaan. Andere aanraders zijn het reuzenrad van Helsinki (tip: check de sauna-cabine!), Sea Life Helsinki en Serena Waterpark.

Hip 4-sterren hotel met een van de betere cocktailbars van Helsinki! De kamers zijn netjes ingericht en hebben een minibar. Sauna en fitness aanwezig.

Helsinki ligt in het zuiden van Finland en heeft een landklimaat. In de zomer is het er relatief droog, met name in juli en augustus valt er weinig regen. Gedurende deze maanden is het gemiddeld zo’n twintig graden, slecht een of twee graden koeler dan in Nederland.

Voor een stedentrip is de periode van mei tot en met september het meest geschikt. In deze periode valt de minste neerslag. Juni is een favoriete maand onder veel reizigers. Het is minder druk dan in de zomervakantie, al moet je wel rekening houden met de aanwezigheid van muggen.

Helsinki kan het beste bereikt worden per vliegtuig. Vanaf Amsterdam vertrekken bijna dagelijks vluchten van KLM en Finnair naar de Finse hoofdstad. De vluchtduur bedraagt zo’n 2,5 uur. Vanaf Brussel vertrekken eveneens directe vluchten naar Helsinki.

Helsinki is ook met de auto te bereiken, al is het een flink stuk rijden. Je kunt via Duitsland, Polen en de Baltische Staten rijden om in Tallinn de veerboot te nemen. Een andere optie is om via Denemarken naar Malmö (Zweden) te rijden en vanaf daar de boot te pakken. De overtocht van Malmö naar Helsinki neemt zo’n veertien uur in beslag.

“leuke, levendige stad zelfs in de winter”.

Helsinki is een hele leuke stad met Russische invloeden in de architectuur. Wij waren hier net voor kerst en dat is leuk want de hele stad is versierd en op sonate square heb je een grote kerstmarkt met allerlei leuke Finse spulletjes. De old market hal is ook echt een aanrader. Dit is een grote overdekte hal waar ze heel veel lekkere eettentjes hebben. Waar wij echt fan van waren was het tentje hierbinnen waar je een groot bord soep kan krijgen en onbeperkt brood staat op de tafels. Het leuke h iervan is dat je bij iedereen aan tafel kan aanschuiven. Daarnaast is Cafe Regatta een toeristisch, maar heel schattig tentje om iets te gaan drinken. Ook is het een leuke ervaring om naar een ijshockey wedstrijd te gaan als je hier bent. Ook als je er, net als wij, geen verstand van hebt is het tof om de sfeer te proeven en te zien hoe mega-snel die puk (en de spelers) over het ijs vliegt. “Helsinki: Must-visit stedentrip”

Finland is qua land erg op zichzelf en minder gastvrij, maar het is niet voor niets dat de mensen tot de gelukkigste op aarde zijn uitgeroepen. De stad is erg mooi en modern, met een aantal mooie musea en een leuk stadscentrum. De stadstour is zeker aan te raden, aangezien je hier langs de mooiste dingen komt. Het eten is verder niet erg apart, maar door de moderne ketens is er voor iedereen wel wat lekkers te verkrijgen. Ik ben er zowel in de zomer als winter geweest en kan beide reizen aanraden. Door de warmte kun je heerlijk vertoeven in de haven, terwijl de kou en sneeuw ook wel zijn charmes heeft.

“Lekker rond gefietst! ”

Met de City Bikes lekker door de stad gefietst, dit was een ideale manier om de stad gemakkelijk en snel te verkennen. Op verschillende punten kan je de fiets ophalen en inleveren, dit maakte het makkelijk en goedkoop om helsinki te ontdekken.

“Slaapstad in de winter”

Helsinki bezocht ik in de winter. Het is een kleine hoofdstad, en ik kreeg het idee dat het een beetje een slapende stad was. Suomenlinna was wel de moeite om te bezoeken per boot. Deze eilandjes waren onderdeel van verdedigingswerken van de stad, tegen vloten die eventueel wilden binnenvallen. Het is, zoals de rest van Scandinavië, ook duur om te eten en te overnachten, zelfs in een hostel. Ik nam vanuit Helsinki de veerboot 's nachts naar Sint Petersburg.

“Niet de leukste Europese stad”

Helsinki viel me toch wat tegen. Ten opzichte van andere Scandinavische steden als Stockholm en Oslo vond ik er weinig te beleven. Er zijn een paar mooie kerken om te bezichtigen, waaronder eentje ingebouwd in een rots, maar voor de rest heb je het er wel snel gezien.

“Rustige stad, leuk voor een paar dagen.”

Ik kwam hier eind november 2015, en het is vooral een compacte, rustige stad. Plan hoogstens een dag of 3. Hoogtepunt was voor mij de eilanden aan de kust van Helsinki, Suomenlinna, waar je vroegere verdedigingswerken van de stad kunt bekijken. Sla dit niet over. Bootjes gaan regelmatig van dichtbij de markt. Minpunt: wellicht iets té rustige en slaperige stad. Mensen gaan vanuit hier vaker naar Riga om te feesten. Tip: neem vanuit hier de nachtboot naar Sint-Petersburg. Als de visumregel s nog niet zijn veranderd kun je hier een aantal dagen visumvrij spenderen.

“Grauwe stad”

Ik heb Helsinki bezoekt als dagtrip vanuit Tallinn. Op een zondag in november. Misschien komt het daardoor, maar ik vond het een grauwe en saaie stad, waar bijna niemand over straat liep en ook weinig spectaculaire bezienswaardigheden waren. Ik kan me voorstellen dat de stad leuker is in de zomer, maar de steden in de omliggende landen zijn meer de moeite waard.

“Bijzonder”

Helsinki is een bijzondere ervaring. Ben er in maart 2011 geweest, stad is nog helemaal in de ban van de winter, de wateren voor Helsinki liggen nog vol met ijs. Ik vond het een redelijk sfeervolle stad, bevolking is wel op zichzelf, en had het idee dat er best een groot alcoholprobleem is. Ik vond het een mooie stad, maar vind de andere Scandinavische steden interessanter en mooier (Stockholm, Oslo, Kopenhagen etc.)

“OK maar niet fantastisch”

Ik heb 2 dagen doorgebracht in Helsinki als onderdeel van een rondreis door Scandinavië en Rusland. Deze 2 dagen waren eigenlijk meer dan genoeg. Er is vrij weinig te zien, het eten was matig en de mensen redelijk afstandelijk. Het centrale plein was zeker mooi, maar daar ben je snel op uitgekeken. De orthodoxe kerken vond ik wel heel indrukwekkend, maar deze vind je ook in andere oost-Europese landen terug.

“Leuke stad voor een niet alledaagse city trip”

Moe van Londen, Parijs of Barcelona? Ga eens op avontuur naar de andere kant van Europa. Helsinki is zeer geschikt voor een geweldige city trip. Een zeer goede stad om heerlijk te winkelen, lekker te eten en in contact te komen met scandinavie. Neem de boot vanuit de haven van Helsinki naar Suomenlinna, een vesting eiland gelegen aan de kust van de hoofdstad. Hier kan je heerlijk wandelen, een lekkere koffie drinken en de oude vesting muren beklimmen. In de avond raad ik aan om eens naar de top van de Torni toren te gaan voor een heerlijke cocktail in de kleine kunstbar van dit hotel. Je bent verzekerd van een geweldig uitzicht over de stad. Kortom, helsinki is een gegarandeerd succes voor een korte city trip.

Helsinki in januari: toen ik die uitnodiging in mijn mailbox kreeg, liepen de rillingen even over mijn lijf. Zou dat niet ontzettend koud zijn? En misschien een beetje saai? Maar nee! Helsinki is een super leuke stad voor een city trip, en het weer in Helsinki was ook helemaal niet zo koud als ik dacht! Er zijn voldoende bezienswaardigheden en andere dingen om te doen in Helsinki om je bezig te houden tijdens je stedentrip. Ik deel de 11 hoogtepunten!

Bezienswaardigheden in Helsinki:

In de meeste steden heb je één gebouw dat de skyline of de aanblik van een stad domineert, en in Helsinki is dat de domkerk. Het grote witte gebouw torent boven de stad uit, en heeft daardoor echt iets goddelijks. De kerk is evangelisch-luthers en de bisschop van Helsinki houdt hier zijn zetel. Het neoclassicistische gebouw stamt uit het midden van de negentiende eeuw en is gratis te bezoeken.

Senaatsplein

Onderaan de trappen van de domkerk, vind je Senate Square, het middelpunt van de stad. Hoewel op het plein niet veel gebeurd, ligt het ingeklemd tussen gebouwen met prachtige architectuur. In het midden van het plein tref je een standbeeld van Alexander II.

Oespenski-kathedraal

Finland heeft hechte banden met Rusland (zoals je kunt zien aan het standbeeld op het Senaatsplein) en deze kerk. De Russich-Orthodoxe Oespenski-kathedraal is de grootste van zijn soort in Noord en West Europa. De kerk werd slechts een paar decennia gebouwd na de domkerk, en staat net als de andere kerk op een heuvel. Je kunt de kerk bezoeken, maar toen ik er was, was hij helaas dicht.

De haven maakt een centraal onderdeel uit van het centrum van Helsinki. Sommige boten in de haven zijn zelfs ingericht als restaurant. Het marktplein van Helsinki bevindt zich ook aan de haven. In de winter is het een beetje uitgestorven, maar in de zomer schijnt het hier druk te zijn met allerlei stalletjes.

Old Market Hall

In het havengebied vind je ook een superleuke food hall: de Old Market Hall. Het lijkt wel alsof je honderd jaar terug in de tijd stapt, als je deze overdekte markthal binnenstapt. Hier kun je delicatessen scoren, en zelfs lekker met een kopje koffie bijkletsen met vrienden.

Aleksanterinkatu

Shoppen doe je het beste in de omgeving rondom Aleksanterinkatu (da’s nog eens een lekker Scrabble-woord). Hier vind je alle bekende ketens, maar ook minder bekende winkels.

Rotskerk Temppeliaukio

Als je veel stedentrips doet, dan zul je na een tijdje het idee krijgen dat zo’n beetje elke kerk op de andere lijkt. Maar dat is bij Temppeliaukio, ook wel de Rotskerk genaamd, niet het geval. Deze kerk is namelijk als een soort bunker uitgehouwen uit een rots. De kerk ligt een stukje uit het centrum, in het midden van een woonwijk, waar je het het minst verwacht. Je betaalt een paar euro entree (ik dacht €4), en kunt vervolgens de binnenkant van de kerk bewonderen, die prachtig gebruikt maakt van de rotswanden en natuurmaterialen, waartegen het koperkleurige orgel en de paarse stoelen prachtig afsteken. Ik voelde echt een rust over me heenkomen toen ik hier zat. Ik heb denk ik wel een half uur van de rust genoten, en lekker in alle stilte alles eens kunnen overdenken.

Kamppi Chapel of Silence

Als je in alle rust eens alles wilt overdenken, kun je ook naar de Kamppi Chapel of Silence gaan: een soort koperkleurige cilinder, die midden in het winkelhart van Helsinki staat, op slechts een paar minuten van het centraal station. Het mooie is dat hier niet echt kerkdiensten worden gehouden, maar dat iedereen binnen kan stappen voor een momentje bezinning of -indien nodig- gebed.

Als je het station van Helsinki uitstapt (overigens ook bijzonder in design), loop je vrijwel recht tegen het Ateneum uit. Dit kunstmuseum heeft de grootste collectie klassieke kunst van heel Finland, dus als je daarvan houdt, moet je echt een bezoekje brengen. Het gebouw is opvallend vanwege zijn klassieke uiterlijk, en stamt uit 1887.

Sibelius monument

Helaas kon ik er zelf geen bezoekje aan brengen wegens tijdgebrek (het ligt nog een stukje verder dan de rotskerk), maar dat vind ik dus oprecht jammer want ik hou wel van dit soort stijl monumenten. Heel strak en stijlvol. Je vindt het monument in Sibelius park, en het is een ode aan componist Jean Sibelius. Hij leefde van 1865-1957.

Löyly sauna

Je weekend in Helsinki is natuurlijk niet compleet zonder een bezoekje aan de sauna: de pilaar waarop de hele Finse maatschappij steunt. Er is me zelfs verteld dat er in Finland meer sauna’s zijn dan mensen. En ik begrijp wel waarom: ze hebben zelfs een cynische sauna-hater als ik weten om te toveren. Het is zo lekker relaxend, en het voelt gezond. Ik heb zelfs daarna in het ijskoude water van de Baltische zee gesprongen terwijl de sneeuw op de kade lag. OMYGOD, dat was echt een bucketlist-ervaring. En ik zou het zo nog eens doen! Löyly is de hipste sauna van Helsinki, en met het prachtige strakke design zie ik meteen waarom. Kookcursus Helsinki Culinary Institute

Heb je altijd al eens Fins willen leren koken? Dan kan dat bij het Helsinki Culinary Institute. En het leuke is dat je daarna ook alles mag opeten ;-). Wij maakten een heerlijke carpaccio van rendiervlees, en als hoofdgerecht een superlekker visgerecht. Ik was verantwoordelijk voor de crackers (daar kan immers weinig mee misgaan), waarvan ik er zoveel maakte dat Helsinki nog maandenlang te eten heeft.

Happy Guide Helsinki

Dan als laatste tip kan ik je de food tour van Happy Guide Helsinki heel erg aanraden. Met zo’n naam leg je de lat natuurlijk best wel hoog, maar ik kan bevestigen dat zowel de groep als de tourguide tijdens de tour het erg naar ons zin hebben gehad. Ik heb heel wat traditionele gerechten en snacks mogen proeven, dus dikke tip: ga met een lege maag! Mocht je overigens niet zo van food tours zijn, dan kun je ook één van de andere tours volgen.

Hotels in Helsinki

Aangezien ik ongeveer een week in Helsinki verbleef, heb ik een aantal hotels kunnen testen, dan wel van binnen kunnen zien. Ikzelf verbleef het merendeel van mijn tijd in Forenom Aparthotel  (foto hieronder). Ik vond het eigenlijk meer hotelkamers dan een appartement, maar het handige is wel dat je een koelkast en glazen en bestek hebt, zodat je makkelijk je eigen ontbijtje mee kan nemen. De kamer was ruim, schoon en comfortabel. De centrale ligging was een dikke plus, want ik was overal in tien minuutjes lopen. Ideaal als je een verblijfplaats op een budget zoekt.

Vrienden van mij verbleven in Klaus K en Lilla Roberts , en hoewel ze daar allebei super enthousiast over waren, ben ik daar niet geweest. Waar ik wel ben geweest is het Clarion hotel, en jeetje, dat is me toch een mooi hotel! Het ligt enigszins uit het centrum, maar geloof me – als je in de Sky bar van je cocktail geniet, of in je luxe stijlvolle kamer van het prachtige uitzicht over de skyline van Helsinki, dan vergeet je dat spontaan. Je kunt zelfs zwémmen op de zestiende verdieping met uitzicht over Helsinki. HÁLLO. Als ik nog eens terugga naar Helsinki, ga ik zeker hier verblijven.

Prijzen in Finland:

De prijzen vielen me in Finland echt enorm mee. Ik had Oslo/Noorwegen als referentiekader, en dat was helemaal niet terecht. Finland is ongeveer net zo duur als Amsterdam (net iets duurder dan gemiddeld Nederland, maar niet heel veel). Alcohol is vrij prijzig, maar ik vond prijzen voor hotelkamers en eten erg meevallen.

Weer in Helsinki:

Het weer in Helsinki viel me enorm mee in Januari. Als je pech hebt kan het min twintig worden, maar dit is eerder een uitzondering dan de regel. Toen ik er was (ongeveer een week lang), was het nooit kouder dan -2. Sneeuw lag er niet veel. In de zomer schijnt het werkelijk heerlijk te zijn in Finland, als ik mijn Finse vriendinnen mag geloven. Pak gewoon een aantal thermosshirts en leggings in, en je bent warm genoeg gekleed.

Handig voor tijdens je reis:

Ik was in Finland als onderdeel van NBE Finland, en mocht de food experiences uitproberen als onderdeel van het StopOver Day programma. Dit programma laat alle leuke dingen zien die je kunt doen als je een paar uur overstap hebt in Helsinki bij je Finnair vlucht.

Wat is Helsinki mooi, zeg! Dat had ik eigenlijk helemaal niet gedacht. Vooral die Russische kerk vind ik prachtig!

Helsinki ziet er nog verrassend mooi uit! Had ik niet verwacht, het is ook niet zo’n stad waar je gelijk aan denkt als je op citytrip gaat

Wat doen tijdens je stedentrip Helsinki? Tips voor de leukste bezienswaardigheden

Dat Helsinki de moeite waard blijkt voor een stedentrip in Noord-Europa ervaar ik tijdens een (te kort) tripje van twee dagen. Helsinki is een hippe, levendige stad en heeft mij enorm verrast. Je vindt er fijne restaurants, moderne architectuur vermengd met andere stijlelementen en sommige wijken bestaan zelfs grotendeels uit Jugendstil-gebouwen. Helsinki leent zich dus uitstekend voor een weekend weg, want er valt een hoop te zien en te doen in de Finse hoofdstad. Ben jij klaar voor een stedentrip Helsinki?

Mensen kijken op Esplanade

Begin je stedentrip Helsinki in het centrum. Hier vind je namelijk de meest populaire straat van de stad. Esplanade is eigenlijk meer een plein dan een straat. Dit komt door het park dat zich in het midden bevindt. Esplanade is de plek in Helsinki waar je vanaf een van de vele bankjes je aan andere mensen kunt vergapen. Het drukbezochte park is favoriet bij zowel inwoners als toeristen.

Beklim de trappen van de Lutherse Domkerk

Het Senaatsplein wordt gezien als het belangrijkste plein van de Finse hoofdstad. In het midden van het plein staat het fraaie standbeeld van Tsaar Alexander II. Het bekendste gebouw van Helsinki én heel Finland is ongetwijfeld de Lutherse Domkerk. De prachtige witte kerk met groene koepels en kleine koepeltorens met gouden versiersels ligt aan het Senaatsplein. De beelden van de twaalf apostelen zijn verdeeld over de vier ingangen die de kerk heeft. Ga zeker even op de trappen voor de Domkerk zitten. Hier heb je namelijk een fantastisch uitzicht over het plein en de stad.

Bewonder Helsinki Centraal Station

In het centrum van de stad vind je het imposante centraal station van Helsinki. Kenmerkend voor het gebouw zijn de groene klokkentoren en de vier reusachtige standbeelden met lampen naast de ingang. De uit Fins graniet opgetrokken gevel laat verder strenge, verticale lijnen zien. Het architectonische hoogstandje van Eliel Saarinen werd voltooid in 1919. Tijdens een stedentrip Helsinki mag een bezoek aan dit karakteristieke treinstation niet ontbreken.

Verwonder je aan de Oespenski kathedraal

De Russische invloed op de stad Helsinki is duidelijk te zien aan de Oespenski kathedraal. De Russisch-orthodoxe kerk deed mij onmiddellijk denken aan de Kerk van de Verlosser op het Bloed die ik tijdens mijn stedentrip Sint Petersburg bezocht. Waar de Russische uitvoering barst van de afbeeldingen en kleuren, is de Finse kathedraal saai te noemen. De uit rode baksteen opgetrokken kathedraal wordt bekroond door een uivormige koepel van goud en twaalf kleinere uien. Waarbij de grootste ui staat voor Christus en de kleinere uien voor de Twaalf Apostelen.

Struinen over de markt

Het Marktplein is een van de belangrijkste plekken in de Finse hoofdstad. Het aan het water gelegen plein is een gezellige plek om te vertoeven. Marktkramen met vers fruit, groente en vis maar ook typische Finse gebruiksvoorwerpen. De markt is een plek waar je ook lekker kunt eten in Helsinki. De lange tafels en banken nodigen uit om te genieten van de Finse specialiteiten én van het prachtige uitzicht over het water.

Midzomernacht Helsinki

Midzomernacht wordt door de Finnen groots gevierd met allerlei festivals. Bepakt met tentjes, matrasjes, eten en drinken pakken de Finnen massaal de ferry naar een van de eilandjes om het zonlicht te bewonderen. Het Midzomernachtfeest vindt plaats in het derde weekend van juni.

Reizen naar Helsinki – Hoe kom je?

Vliegen is verreweg de meest snelle en comfortabele manier van reizen – en waarschijnlijk ook nog de goedkoopste – voor wie een weekend naar Helsinki gaat. Vanaf Amsterdam vliegen meerdere maatschappijen direct op Helsinki. Wij vlogen met Transavia in 2,5 uur naar de Finse hoofdstad. Kijk op TIX.nl voor goedkope vliegtickets Helsinki .

Van vliegveld Helsinki naar het centrum

Vliegveld Helsinki-Vantaa ligt ongeveer 20 kilometer van het centrum van Helsinki vandaan, vlakbij het stadje Vantaa. De trein is de snelste manier om van de luchthaven naar de stad te komen. Iedere 10 minuten rijdt er een trein (de P-train en I-train) tussen het vliegveld en het centrum. Na ongeveer een half uur reizen sta je in het centrum van Helsinki. Een enkeltje kost € 5,50 en je koopt je kaartje bij de VR-ticketautomaten op het vliegveld. Bus 615 rijdt van het vliegveld naar het centrum. Bij de ticketautomaat kost een buskaartje € 2,90 en bij de buschauffeur € 3,20. De rit duurt ongeveer 45 minuten.

Vervoer in Helsinki

Met de Helsinki Card Region kun je onbeperkt gratis gebruik maken van het openbaar vervoer in Helsinki. Zelf verken ik het liefst een stad te voet. Zo kom je op plekken waar je anders niet zo snel zal komen. Helsinki is een echte fietsstad. De Finse hoofdstad op de fiets verkennen? Er zijn verschillende mogelijkheden om een fiets te huren in Helsinki. Wij huurden fietsen bij Bicyclean Helsinki en waren zeer tevreden over de tweewielers en de goede service. Aanrader!

Overnachten Helsinki

Op zoek naar een leuk hotel in Helsinki? Wij verbleven in  Forenom Aparthotel Helsinki Kamppi . Dit hotel ligt op loopafstand van het centrum en heeft een goede prijs-kwaliteitverhouding. Andere aanrader is Holiday Inn Helsinki City Centre  dat direct naast het centraal station ligt. Ook leuk: Hotel Finn . The 21 Best Things to See and Do in Helsinki

When I landed in Helsinki , I didn’t really know what to expect. Out of all the capital cities in Northern Europe, Helsinki gets the least “buzz.”

Founded in the 16th century by the King of Sweden, Helsinki was originally established to rival the bustling trading port of Tallinn . Unfortunately, growth was slow and most of the city died during the plague of 1710. It wasn’t until the Russians annexed the region that it started to develop and grow into the city it is today.

While small (less than 1 million people live here) and not as popular as Stockholm or Copenhagen , Helsinki is a hip, modern capital home to a vibrant art and music scene. It’s bursting with museums, cafes, and green space. You can easily do most of your sightseeing in the city on foot since it’s compact. And best of all, Helsinki sees a fraction of the tourists that other Scandinavian capitals get.

To help you make the most of your visit, here is my list of the best things to do in Helsinki:

Green Cap Tours offers a free 1.5-2 hour tour that acts as a solid introduction to the city. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!  

A museum about the postal service sounds absolutely boring but I found it surprisingly interesting. The museum highlights the history of the mail service in Finland, from ships and sleds in the 1600s to the modern-day service. There are tons of relics, galleries, and short films about how they made mail delivery work in such a sparsely populated and harsh environment. It does an excellent job taking a boring subject and making it fun, accessible, and educational.

Alaverstaanraitti 5, +358 03 5656 6966, postimuseo.fi. Open Monday-Friday 11am-7pm, and Saturday-Sunday 11am-5pm. Admission is 15 EUR.  

It’s also a multi-sensory experience that features different elements, such as ballet dancers or aerial performers. It’s super unique and a cool way to experience live music while supporting local artists. Check out their website to see what’s on during your visit.  

Dating to the 18th century, this small park was originally a private garden belonging to a Russian businessman before becoming a public park in the 1960s. Today, it’s a popular spot for picnics, relaxing, events, and sledding in the winter. There are lots of cafes nearby so grab a snack and come here to lounge and watch the day go by. It’s super popular with the locals in the summer.  

As a history buff, I always appreciate a good museum. I’ve been to more than my fair share of disappointing and underfunded museums over the years. Fortunately, this was not one of them.

This museum has a large collection of Finnish artifacts from the Stone Age to the present, including jewelry, coins, tools, weapons, and more. Containing the most comprehensive collection of cultural history in Finland, the museum is ideal for learning about Finnish folk culture and the Finno-Ugric people. Permanent collections can be viewed alongside a fascinating array of rotating pop-up exhibits. The museum also hosts workshops and tours. It’s a good place to get an overview of Finland’s history.

Mannerheimintie 34, +358 29 5336000, kansallismuseo.fi/en/kansallismuseo. Open daily 11am-6pm (8pm on Wednesday). Closed Mondays in the winter. Admission is 14-18 EUR and free on Fridays between 4pm-6pm.  

There are also a lot of interesting buildings here (including six different museums) and some out-of-the-way beaches.

Admission to the fort is free, though each museum has its own admission fee. A guided tour costs 11 EUR.  

Mannerheiminaukio 2, +358 29 450 0501, kiasma.fi/en. Open Tuesday-Friday 10am-8:00pm, and Saturdays 10am-5pm. Admission is 22 EUR and free on the first Friday of the month. Admission for visitors under 18 is free.  

This museum houses an awesome collection of photography from both Finnish and international artists. There are rotating exhibits as well as exhibits by new and emerging photographers. There’s always something interesting here so check the website to see what’s on display during your visit. It’s a pretty compact museum, so it doesn’t take long to see.

Tallberginkatu 1, +358 9 68663610, valokuvataiteenmuseo.fi. Open Monday-Friday 11am-8pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-6pm. Admission is 16 EUR. Free admission for anyone under 18.  

For souvenir shopping, tasty local food, fresh produce (including lots of berries in the summer), and great people-watching, be sure to head to the Central Market. It’s located near the harbor, which sits on the coast of the Baltic Sea. In October, the herring market begins which is a huge local event. The market has heated tents when it gets cold and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes around making it a fun place to visit any time of the year. While it is often swarming with tourists, I heard enough Finnish to know it isn’t a complete tourist trap.

Open daily 8am-5pm. Admission is free .  

This is the only museum in the city that focuses on older European paintings and portraits (from the 14th-19th centuries). Housed in a building built in 1842, there are around 4,000 items in the collection. Not only are there some incredible and historic works here but part of the museum is composed of the Sinebrychoff residence itself. You can walk through the old Sinebrychoff estate and see what life was like for the affluent in Helsinki in the 19th century.

Admittedly, a bank museum sounds even more boring than a post museum but this museum was one of the coolest museums I’ve seen in a long time. First and foremost, it paints a clear and insightful picture of the history of money in Finland. They also host rotating exhibitions on all sorts of related topics (such as counterfeit money). But what I found the museum really did well was to explain the history of modern finance. It makes the topic so clear and concise that I really learned a lot during my visit.

Snellmaninkatu 2, +358 9 183 2626, rahamuseo.fi/en. Open Tuesday-Friday 11am-5pm and 11am-4pm on weekends. Admission is free.  

This park, known as Espa to the locals, is a popular place to spend an afternoon when the weather is nice. In the warmer summer months, there are street musicians and performers around as well as lots of green space and benches for anyone looking to lounge with a book or a picnic. Opened in 1818, the park also has some walking and jogging trails too. It’s just a nice place to relax and soak in the city.  

Kanavakatu 1, +358 9 85646100, hos.fi/en. Open Tuesday-Friday 9:30am-4pm, Saturday 10am-3pm and 4pm-7pm, and Sunday 9am-3pm. Closed during ceremonies. Admission is free.  

If you’re a foodie like me, you have to take a food tour. They’re the best way to sample the local delicacies and traditional foods, such as fresh fish, wild game, craft beer, and Finnish porridge.

Heather’s Helsinki offers a tasty tour of the city that lasts five hours and includes many different stops around the city for just 85 EUR per person. You’ll not only get to eat some great food but you’ll learn a ton about the history and culture behind the cuisine too.  

Opened in 1911, this is an excellent city museum with plenty of descriptions and top-notch exhibits and photos. It’s actually the third-best city museum I’ve come across in Europe (after the Amsterdam and Barcelona museums). Do not miss it. You learn a lot about the city and about how it has changed and evolved over the centuries.

Aleksanterinkatu 16, +358 9 31036630, helsinginkaupunginmuseo.fi. Open weekdays 11am-7pm and weekends 11am-5pm. Admission is free.  

This huge park is tucked away in the southeast corner of Helsinki. During the winter, tobogganing is popular here. Lots of events are held here as well, such as Vappu Day (May 1st) celebrations. The park overflows with thousands of locals who come to picnic, listen to music, and drink away the day. Since it’s so out of the way, you hardly ever see tourists here.  

You can’t visit Finland without going to a sauna. The word itself is Finnish, as the sauna was invented here millenia ago. There are around 3 million in the country (which is a lot since there are only 5.5 million people in Finland). There are plenty of public saunas in Helsinki, most of which cost around 15 EUR and have separate sections for men and women. You can usually rent towels as well, and while going nude is the traditional method there’s no shame in wearing a towel either.

Meilahti, +358 295 33 6912, kansallismuseo.fi/en/seurasaarenulkomuseo. Open May-September. Check the website for specific hours. The museum is currently closed but will reopen May 2024. Admission is 12 EUR.  

Finnish design, like its Scandinavian counterparts, is incredibly popular, known for seamlessly integrating design elements into regular life. The museum teaches you about Finnish architecture and design history over the last century and a half. Opened in 1873, the Design Museum holds over 75,000 objects, 40,000 drawings, and 100,000 photographs.

Korkeavuorenkatu 23, +358 9 6220 540, designmuseum.fi/en. Open 11am-6pm Tuesday-Sunday (8pm on Tuesdays) in the winter and 11am-6pm daily in the summer. Admission is 20 EUR and is free on the last Tuesday of the month from 4pm-8pm.  

Named after Amos Anderson, a Finnish patron of the arts, Amos Rex is an art museum that opened in August 2018. It has a rotating series of temporary exhibitions from local and international artists (check the website for details) and is already one of the most popular in Helsinki. I’m not a modern art fan, but I’m told this gallery has really cool exhibitions.

Helsinki is a city that deserves more praise than it gets. Fortunately for you, since it’s often overlooked, you can visit without dealing with the crowds that so many other European capitals are plagued with. Winkelen in Helsinki

Laat je mode-hartje sneller kloppen in de moderne winkelstraten of verken één van de vele vintage boetiekjes. Een fijne plek om jouw shopavonturen te beginnen is Esplanadi . Rondom en in de buurt van dit stadspark vind je vele (luxere) winkels en restaurants. In de zomermaanden vinden hier bovendien regelmatig evenementen plaats, dus haal een salmiakki-ijsje – een lokale delicatesse! – neem plaats op een bankje en geniet van de levendige sfeer.

Historische gebouwen in Helsinki

Vanaf dit park wandel je binnen enkele minuten naar het Senaatplein . Dit plein is omringd met enkele van de oudste gebouwen van de stad. Het universiteitsgebouw, de nationale bibliotheek en de Domkerk behoren dan ook tot de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden van Helsinki.

Er is nog een andere bijzondere kerk in Helsinki: de Temppeliaukio-kerk , iets ten westen van de stad. Deze kerk is gebouwd door met explosieven een gat te maken in een rotsheuvel, om de opening vervolgens af te dekken met een koepel. Met als resultaat unieke rotswanden én een uitstekende akoestiek. Je kunt er, naast voor geloofsbijeenkomsten, dan ook regelmatig een concert bijwonen.

Ook kunst- en cultuurliefhebbers kunnen hun hart ophalen tijdens een Helsinki stedentrip. Begin kunstzinnig bij het Ateneum Art Museum of het Design Museum en doe vervolgens een stap terug in de tijd bij het Nationaal Museum van Finland . • Even ontspannen tijdens je stedentrip? Helsinki is een groene stad met meerdere grote parken te vinden. Struin bijvoorbeeld langs de vijvers en fonteinen in Alppipuisto park , wandel tussen beelden en bloemen in Kaivopuisto park of bekijk de roze bloesembomen in Roihuvuori Cherry Tree Park .
• Tijd voor wat avontuur? Bezoek Linnanmäki ! Dit pretpark met attracties, shows en activiteiten voor het hele gezin, ligt in het hart van Helsinki.
• Helsinki ligt aan het water en voor de kust liggen vele eilandjes. Eén van de hoogtepunten is Suomenlinna . Dit UNESCO-werelderfgoed bestaat uit een fort gebouwd op zes eilanden, die (deels) via bruggen met elkaar verbonden zijn. Je kunt deze verrassende plek bezoeken met de veerboot.
• Sauna’s worden bij ons als luxe gezien, maar wist je dat zo’n beetje elke Fin er eentje in huis heeft? Daarom is het een must in Helsinki om eens naar de sauna te gaan! Vooral als jouw citytrip in de winter plaatsvindt is het een heerlijke manier om even op te warmen.

Restaurants & uitgaan in Helsinki

Ga je op stedentrip naar Helsinki, dan staat je een verrassende culinaire ervaring te wachten. Finland heeft namelijk een aantal specialiteiten waar je waarschijnlijk nog nooit van gehoord hebt! Een traditioneel gerecht is ‘poronkäristys’; rendierenvlees met aardappelpurree en bessen. Een bijzondere combi! Sowieso wordt er veel met bessen gegeten.

Meer lokale specialiteiten en snacks haal je op de Helsinki-markt langs de kade. Wat dacht je van ‘leipäjuusto’ (een ‘broodkaas’ die je eet met bramen of bessen) en ‘karjalanpiirakka’ (pasteitjes van roggemeel, gevuld met rijst). Eet je liever bekende kost? In de buurt van het plein Rautatientori (bij het centraal station) vind je talloze internationale restaurants en bekende fastfoodketens.

Met een heerlijke maaltijd achter de kiezen is het tijd om het bruisende nachtleven van Helsinki te ontdekken. Eén van de bekendste luxe clubs is Teatteri. Finse celebrities komen hier graag! Naast dansen in hippe discotheken zijn de Finnen gek op heavy metal: de beste plek om te headbangen is het legendarische Tavastia, waar ook regelmatig concerten worden gegeven. Maar ook voor andere muziekstijlen tijdens je stedentrip is er aan bars, karaokebars, clubs en café’s geen gebrek in Helsinki!

Helsinki voor beginners

Helsinki is niet de meest voor de hand liggende bestemming als je denkt aan een stedentrip. Waarschijnlijk zal de Finse hoofdstad niet in de top tien van meest populaire Europese steden terecht komen. Dat heeft vooral te maken met het feit dat Helsinki een vrij jonge stad is. Helsinki stamt uit het jaar 1550, maar tot het begin van de negentiende eeuw is Helsinki een onbelangrijk kuststadje gebleven. Dat veranderde toen de Russen in het jaar 1812 de hoofdstad verplaatsen van Turku naar Helsinki. Vanaf dat moment groeide Helsinki snel. Zo werd al snel het Senaatsplein ontwikkeld met bovenop de heuvel de zo kenmerkende Lutherse Domkerk. Het Senaatsplein en het Marktplein zijn samen nog steeds grotendeels gezichtsbepalend voor Helsinki.

De stad Helsinki nu

Helsinki staat bol van de moderne architectuur vermengd met andere stijlelementen. Sommige wijken bestaan bijvoorbeeld grotendeels in uit Jugendstil gebouwen. De stad is gebouwd op vooral onregelmatig gevormde eilanden, waardoor de stad een afwijkende structuur heeft. Zo zijn er meerdere havens, is er geen echte rondweg en telt Helsinki een groot aantal bruggen. Waarom zou je naar Helsinki op vakantie gaan? Ten eerste is het een leuke stad om te vertoeven. De stad heeft een positieve vibe, er is altijd wel wat te doen op het gebied van evenementen. Helsinki is verder een uitstekende stad om te winkelen, heerlijk uit te eten en de stad heeft een aangenaam uitgaansleven. Hotels zijn over het algemeen van prima kwaliteit en vrijwel zonder uitzondering voorzien van een sauna. Het nadeel is dat aan al het leuke een prijskaartje hangt. Finland en dus ook Helsinki is geen goedkope bestemming. Dat komt deels door belastingdruk (alcohol), maar vooral ook door de geboden kwaliteit. Wat elders gemiddeld is, is hier de onderkant. Op alle gebieden merk je dat je wel waar krijgt voor je geld. Uit eten in Helsinki is bijna een feest. Mooie ingrediënten van hoge kwaliteit worden samengesmolten tot tongstrelende gerechten. Vooral vis neemt hier een belangrijke plaats in en goede vis is ook in een vissersland als Finland niet goedkoop.

Dat je zo goed kunt winkelen in Helsinki is niet bekend bij het grote publiek. Dat komt vooral omdat in Nederland ‘goed winkelen’ vaak synoniem is voor ‘goedkoop winkelen’. En nee, daarvoor moet je in Helsinki inderdaad niet zijn. Wel voor de aangename mix van honderden winkels die binnen enkele vierkante kilometers te vinden zijn. Als je in Helsinki gaat winkelen doe je dat voor de beleving, niet voor de prijs. Vooral voor mensen die van design houden is Helsinki een walhalla. Grote kans dat je hier leuke dingen kunt kopen die jaren later nog steeds uniek zijn.

Toen wij Helsinki voor de eerste keer bezochten waren we aangenaam verrast. De stad is redelijk groot, maar zelden te druk. De inwoners zijn correct, vriendelijk en zorgen voor een zeer prettige sfeer in de stad. Geen enkel moment hebben we ons ongemakkelijk of onveilig gevoeld in de stad. En dat Helsinki net wat anders is dan wat je gewend bent van een Europese stedentrip maakt deze stad extra interessant voor een ontspannen citytrip. Het grootste minpunt, het prijsniveau, is ons eerlijk gezegd ook wel meegevallen. Tijdens een vakantie op Ibiza betaal je meer voor je cocktail dan in Helsinki en de hotelkamerprijzen vallen ook best wel mee als je goed zoekt. Ja, het eten is wat duurder dan wat je in Nederland gewend bent. Maar als je eerlijk kijkt wat je extra betaalt ten opzichte van wat je elders betaalt dan zul je zien dat het op je totale vakantiebudget best wel weer meevalt. Laat je dus nergens door tegenhouden en vlieg naar Helsinki! Je zult er geen spijt van krijgen.

What to do there: See the park’s two impressive sculptures. The bronze Ilmatar and the Scaup reflects the Kalevala, a Finnish national epic. Sitting on top of a red granite base, it was created in the 1940s. The Sibelius Monument came later, in the 1960s. The abstract silver-coloured sculpture features more than 600 tubes that loosely resemble organ pipes. A bust of the late composer is located close to the interesting tubular piece. You can walk under and around the various-sized tubes—hit them with a stick to hear the sounds produced in the hollowness. You’ll also find a war memorial within the park. Stroll alongside the pond, relax on the grass, and spot local nature.

Why it’s awesome: Also known as the Rock Church, Temppeliaukio Church is one of the famous places in Helsinki. A competition was held for the designs and it was won by two brothers who were architects. Hewn into rock, the Lutheran church has been open since 1969. Inside, the craggy bare rock surface helps to provide excellent acoustics in the church. It is often used to host concerts. Despite having been cut into rocks, the church is surprisingly light and airy, thanks to a large skylight around the copper dome on top of the rocks. What to do there: From the outside, there is little to indicate the marvellous sights that await you inside the church. You can walk on top of the rocks to peer down through the skylight for a taste of what’s to come. Step through the doors and be impressed by the skill that must have gone into designing the religious centre and carving out the solid rocks.

See the large organ that dominates part of the wall; the organ has more than 3,000 pipes. Run your fingers over the jagged walls and take a seat on one of the pews to admire the circular place of worship and the blend of the natural and the man-made. 3. Visit Finland’s Former Capital City – Turku

Although Helsinki is the current capital of Finland, it wasn’t always. Helsinki became the capital during Russian rule, as the former capital was deemed too close to Sweden, Finland’s previous ruler, and not close enough to Russia. During the Swedish era, the capital was Turku, about two hours from Helsinki by car. 

Turku is the oldest city in Finland, founded all the way back in the 13th century. As you enter the Old Town area, you’ll find buildings dating back hundreds of years, brought to life with frequent street markets and many cafes and restaurants. As you stroll only the riverbank, you’ll find many vendors lining the waterway, offering handmade wares and traditional Finnish treats. 

On the mainland, Turku Castle is a must-do. It’s the largest surviving medieval building in Finland and offers a look through the history of Swedish rule in Finland. 

For some scenic views, you can take a few free transportation options, like the little orange ferry called Föri, which offers a ride from the east to the west sides of the city. Or take the funicular, a free cable car that takes you to the top of Kakolanmäki.

Turku is also the gateway to the archipelago trail, connecting a chain of islands. Although you can’t do the full course in one day, it’s worth exploring the islands during your Helsinki day trip, as you’ll spot historic villages, beautiful parks, and can’t-miss landmarks.

4. Take a Ferry to Naantali, Finland

If there’s one island you need to visit outside Turku, it’s Naantali, especially if you’re visiting in the summer. You can either opt to take a ferry from Turku or simply hop on the bus or drive. Getting to Naantali from Turku is generally quicker by land, but the ferry offers some lovely views of the surrounding islands.

Enjoy the crystal clear waters by the beaches, shop and dine your way around the waterfront restaurants and boutiques, or study the culture and history of the area at the island’s many museums and landmarks. 

If you have little ones, be sure to stop by Moomin World , just outside of the city. Throughout Finland, you’ll find the famous Moomin characters are quite beloved. Moomin World is an adorably themed park where your little ones get to hang out with the characters and go on adventures with them. 

5. Explore the Suomenlinna Fortress in Suomenlinna, Finland

Suomenlinna is one of the most popular day trips from Helsinki, and it’s located just a ferry ride away. Just hop on the HSL ferry to get to this stunning island fortress. If you already have a pass for the HSL transit, you already have your ticket to get to Suomenlinna. 

Created during the Swedish rule of Finland, it would continue on to be a military base under Russian control as well. With Finland’s independence in 1917, Suomenlinna continued as a fortress for the Finnish military. But it was turned over for civilian use in the 1970s and went on to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Today, it’s home to nearly 800 residents and one of the biggest attractions in the Helsinki area. Explore the six museums throughout the island, two of which are open all year round. Or enjoy a scenic stroll around the remains of the fortress, including hidden tunnels and towering walls offering incredible views. 

Suomenlinna also has a number of beaches you’ll love to relax on during the summer months, as well as several upscale restaurants and cafes.

6. Go Museum Hopping in Espoo, Finland

In under half an hour by train, bus, or car, you can get to the idyllic getaway that is Espoo. Despite being a bustling city with five local centers, Espoo is filled with natural beauty, from lakes and forests to long shorelines and islands.

In the WeeGee Exhibition Centre , you’ll find you can easily spend a day exploring its many museums, shops, and cafes. The exhibition center is home to five museums, including the biggest art museum in Finland, Finland’s only horology museum, and a toy museum. But you’ll find plenty more historic sites outside of the exhibition center as well, including the Villa Elfvik Nature House in the Laajalahti Nature Reserve. 

For families with little ones, they’ll love visiting the oldest children’s theater in Finland, as well as the more recently designed Serena Water Amusement Park , which is the largest constant warm water park in the Nordic countries and also includes a ski resort.

7. Go Kayaking, Hiking, and Wildlife Watching in Nuuksio National Park, Finland

If you’re looking to escape city life altogether, Nuuksio National Park is one of the best day trips from Helsinki. Located north of Espoo, Nuuksio National Park is filled with forested hills and over 80 small lakes and ponds. 

As you follow the marked trails, which feature several vista points with incredible views, keep your eyes peeled for the many animals that call this park home, including the elusive Siberian flying squirrel, Nuuksio’s famous symbol.

8. Check Out the Medieval Buildings in Tallinn, Estonia

The ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn is just two hours, offering you plenty of scenic views before you get to see the beauty of this historic city. Tallinn may be Estonia’s capital city, but it’s likely unlike many cities you’ve seen, particularly in the city’s charming Old Town. In place of skyscrapers, there are medieval buildings that look like they popped right out of a fairytale.

In the Old Town, you’ll find towers dating back to the Middle Ages, St. Olaf’s Church, and the oldest continually operating apothecary in Europe. It’s truly a place to travel back in time. You’ll find that no matter where you travel in Tallinn, you’ll be transported to another time and place, from the Baroque palace of Kadriorg , built by Peter the Great for his wife, to the Lasnamäe region, with its Soviet-style residential buildings.

9. Sweat it Out in the ‘Sauna Capital of the World’ – Tampere, Finland

Finns love their saunas, so perhaps that’s why so many flock to Tampere, the sauna capital of the world. In a little under two hours from Helsinki by train or car, you can go to Tampere to experience the sauna culture on one of the best Helsinki day trips. But while the more than 50 public saunas are one of the reasons why this vacation destination is a top choice for Finns, there’s also plenty to do outside of these famous buildings.

Located in the Lakeland region, Tampere is set between two great lakes. Between its historic red-brick buildings and its scenic shores, you’ll want to be snapping pictures everywhere you go in Tampere. The city’s landmark establishments have been transformed, keeping the classic architecture but trading what’s inside for fine dining, handcrafted goods, museums, and even arthouse cinemas. 

Tampere Market Hall is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. You’ll want to spend the whole afternoon sampling pastries, cheese, fish, and much more. And if you’re visiting with little ones, the Särkänniemi amusement park is perfect for thrill-seekers, while the park’s Doghill Fairytale Farm is great for the young and young at heart who want to meet Finnish farm animals. 

10. Check Out the Flora and Fauna on the Island of Vallisaari, Finland

Located just a 20-minute ferry ride from Helsinki is Vallisaari Island , one of the top Helsinki day trips. Previously used by the Finnish Defense Forces, the island was abandoned in 2008, leaving the diverse flora and fauna to take it over. In 2016, it opened to the public for tourism.

Vallisari was previously used during the Swedish reign, but they did not build fortresses on it as they did Suomenlinna. During Russian rule, however, the island was more utilized for military purposes. When at last it was under Finnish jurisdiction, it served the Finnish Defense Forces, but it also became home to a small residential area where the residents lived a fairly rural life.

Unlike Suomenlinna, which still has residents today, the last of those who lived on Vallisaari left in 1996. Today, it’s a place to step through history and nature. Visitors are asked to coexist with the animals and plants who call this island home, as many species are threatened or rare. As you traverse the designated paths, keep aware of your surroundings, and you just might spot some creatures you’ve never seen before.

11. Take the Family to Hämeenlinna, Finland

About an hour from Helsinki by bus, train, or car is Hämeenlinna, the oldest inland city in Finland. As a cultural hub, you’ll find plenty of history here, as well as many venues to see live performances. 

It’s also a highly kid-friendly place to visit, as you’ll find many attractions that cater to little ones, like the Royal Puppet Theater and the Hämeelinnan Miniteatteri . Hämeelinna pledged to offer cultural experiences and art for every child in the city every Saturday of the school year, making it the first city in Finland to be recognized by UNICEF as a child-friendly municipality.

Even the famous Häme Castle offers children-focused tours. This historical castle takes you back to the Middle Ages. You can explore the castle, its many artifacts, and several art and history exhibitions inside and around it. 

12. Get Out on the Water in Lahti, Finland

Located just about an hour away from Helsinki by bus, train, or car, Lahti is a lakeside city that’s part of the Lakeland region. Lakeland is where many Finns come to connect with nature, and Lahti is a perfect spot to do so, which is why it makes for one of the most popular Helsinki day trips. Near Lahti, you’ll find tons of nature trails, as well as opportunities to get out on the water, especially in nearby Päijänne National Park.

If you’re a skier, you’ll love the Lahti Sports Center , which is open all year round. From June to August, the large ski jump hill is open to the public every day, but if you’re more of a swimmer, you can take a dip in the outdoor pool at the foot of the hill.

You can also see how Lahti embraces the fusion of art and nature at the Water Organ and Lanu Sculpture Park . The Water Organ is a musical fountain that plays a daily show throughout the summer at 6 pm. Over in Lanu Sculpture Park, you’ll find various pieces of art that connect to the natural beauty around them.

13. Marvel at the Talvia Giant’s Kettles in Lohja, Finland

Less than an hour from Helsinki by bus or car is Lohja, a lakeside city that allows you to connect with nature. On the Lohja lakes, you can take a dip at one of several beaches, try your hand at fishing, or rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.

For those looking to enjoy nature but not get wet, there are many nature trails available to take, which will allow you to see beloved landmarks like the Talvia Giant’s kettles – these potholes were formed during the Ice Age, and legend says giants made them.

For more nature, you’ll find a handful of gardens to explore, as well as an apple winery. You’ll also discover many museums, cafes, and art galleries throughout the region.

14. Go Fishing or Whitewater Rafting in Kotka, Finland

Two hours by bus or one-and-a-half hours by car away from Helsinki is Kotka, a picturesque waterside town. When you visit here, expect to get wet. Or at least spend a lot of the day by the water. The Kymijoki River flows through the town and is known for having the best salmon fishing in southern Finland. 

But even if you’re not into fishing, there’s plenty to enjoy about this waterfront oasis. The river is home to many rapids, so any adventurers in your group will definitely want to rent a kayak to head through them. Those who want a more relaxing time will enjoy taking a cruise around the archipelago. 

Kotka is also home to several museums, the most notable of which is the Maritime Museum of Finland . With Kotka’s rich seafaring history, it only makes sense for the museum to call this city home. You can also learn about the history of wooden boat construction at the Finnish Wooden Boat Centre .

15. Take a Hike in Sipoonkorpi National Park, Finland

Though it was only established in 2011, Sipoonkorpi National Park is one of the most visited national parks in Finland. Under an hour away by car or slightly over an hour by bus from Helsinki, Sipoonkorpi offers a chance to escape city life on one of the most unique day trips from Helsinki.

There are several nature trails to enjoy here, which will allow you to see the local flora and fauna while you climb to take in magnificent views. In the winter, you can enjoy both cross-country skiing and freestyle skiing. Meanwhile, in the summer, the national park is a perfect place to hunt for berries and mushrooms. 

Other activities include fishing, biking, and horseback riding. For those who want to relax after a day of adventuring around the park, both traditional smoke saunas and more modern electric saunas are available at Kuusijärvi , where you can also enjoy going for a swim.

There’s so much more to see around Helsinki, Finland than just the Finnish capital. The national parks, the islands, the cute old towns, the fortress, and even the places across the borders. Don’t miss out and explore Finland and beyond with these local’s suggestions for day trips from Helsinki.

Helsinki is quite a small city, and even though there is a lot to do in Helsinki in winter and any other season, you might want to wander even further. For those having three or more days in Helsinki, and looking to go beyond the city walls, the Finnish capital city offers a lot of opportunities for travels within Finland region, as well as to other places in Europe.

It really only takes a few hours to land in a different world, so Helsinki day trip is always a good idea. Whether you an outdoor lover or you prefer to dig into the culture of the region, there are several Helsinki day trips that you can take. Below, you can find the locals’ favourite suggestions for unforgettable day trips from Helsinki.

The best day trips from Helsinki

Although Helsinki has lots to offer for visitors, it is always interesting to explore other areas. Here are six suggestions for Helsinki day trips. You can choose more outdoorsy activities to explore the unique Finnish nature and culture or visit exciting cities nearby.

1. Suomenlinna

The Suomenlinna island fortress in the middle of Finnish archipelago is a must trip from Helsinki. The island is a World Heritage Site – full of 18th-century military architecture, history and culture. It’s a very popular place to visit – also among locals, and especially during the summer. However, it is an exciting and beautiful attraction all year round. Did you know that it is also one of the districts in Helsinki, and there are 800 residents?

If you are visiting Suomenlinna during the summer, I suggest a traditional local experience: pack a picnic with you. Get some Finnish sweet or savoury pastries from a bakery. I recommend trying cinnamon rolls ( korvapuusti ) from Kanniston Leipomo – they have several  bakery shops around the city . Their cinnamon buns have been voted for the best in Helsinki, and are indeed very big and delicious! Don’t forget buying fresh berries from the Market Square before heading to the boat. There is a small grocery shop in Suomenlinna, so you can also buy snacks from there. Please note that open fires and barbeques are not permitted in the area.

In Suomenlinna, you can walk around the island, marvel the beautiful nature and interesting military architecture. There are also restaurants, cafés and  museums  to try. For special seasonal events and activities, check   the Suomenlinna website  for accurate information. Moreover, the island makes one of the best day trips from Helsinki in winter with all the colourful houses covered with snow and the dramatic looking sea.

How to get to Suomenlinna?

Suomenlinna is easy to access in around 15-20 minutes by boat from Helsinki centre. The public ferry departs from the east side of the Market Square (Kauppatori). It’s part of the city transport network HSL, and all HSL tickets are accepted. Single-tickets (2,90 €) can be bought from the machines near the departure point, or via HSL app (2,20 €). Check ferry timetables from  HSL journey planner . In the summer season (May-September), there is also private waterbus connection by  JT-Line  – however, it costs more than the public ferry. If you wish to visit other islands such as Vallisaari or Lonna, the waterbus might be the best option. You also have a chance to take the combined 5-hour tour of Helsinki and Suomenlinna  and get informative insights from a local guide.

2. Vallisaari Island

The islands of Vallisaari and Kuninkaansaari are a fantastic destination to visit. Just 20 minutes by boat from Helsinki Market Square, you will reach this national park area that was open to public only 2016. Their range of flora and fauna is winder than anywhere else in the metropolitan area. Earlier the islands used to be in military use, and they have an interesting history.

There are two marked trails: the Alexander Tour (3 km) and the Kuninkaansaari Island Tour (2.5 km). You should stay on the trails because beyond them are dangerous structures; also the environment is very sensitive. Suomenlinna is very near Vallisaari, and you can see it from many spots.

In the islands, you will find water points, dry toilets and picnic tables. During summer, there is also a café and some guided tours. No winter maintenance. Before visiting, please read the  rules and regulations   that apply to the area.

How to get to Vallisaari Island?

There is a waterbus connection to Vallisaari Island during the summer period May-September. Check timetables and information:   JT-line   and  Aaval ines . Waterbuses departure from Market Square. With JT-Line, it is also possible to combine visiting other islands, such as Lonna and Suomenlinna to one “island-hopping” ticket.

3. Nuuksio National Park

You might easily think that to experience typical Finnish scenery with wild woods and pretty lakes, you would need to head further from Helsinki than you actually do. The Nuuksio National Park is located in the neighbouring cities of Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti and can be reached quite easily by public transportation from Helsinki. It makes for one of the best nature day trips from Helsinki.

There are several marked trails and nature trails, varying from easy to difficult (1.5-17km). Some of the trails are suitable for biking or horse riding. The landscape is very typical to upland Finland; green forests and blue lakes and ponds. You can also explore the woods beyond the trails; berry- and mushroom picking is also permitted. The area is well-kept, and there are dry toilets, water points, campfire places and cooking shelters. The trails and routes are clearly marked.

For a truly Finnish experience, I recommend packing a good lunch: sandwiches, Finnish pastries such as cinnamon buns and Karelian pies and fruits. And naturally sausages and corns for BBQ; making a campfire is the highlight of a forest hiking trip! Don’t forget to bring some coffee, hot chocolate or warm juice if you are there during the cold season. You can sit by the pretty ponds and marvel the beautiful nature while enjoying your campfire barbeque.

Most of Nuuksio’s marked trails are not being maintained in the winter. However, it is possible to go there in the winter. At least the easiest trails should be doable in the winter, too. Just be cautious for ice/slippery parts and wear enough warm clothing. You can also walk on the ponds (just make sure that the ice is strong enough). How to get to Nuuksio National Park?

The starting point called Haukkalampi, Espoo (Haukkalammentie 32) can be reached by taking a local train from Helsinki to Leppävaara, Espoo. From Leppävaara station, take the bus number 238 or 242 towards Siikaniemi. The stop is called Kolmoislammentie, and from there you will walk around 2,5 km to Haukkalampi. Porvoo is a city around 50 km east of Helsinki. It is a very popular place to visit – also for Finns. The city has a very idyllic old town with wooden houses and cobblestone streets. Porvoo is the second oldest town in Finland – it became a town already in 1380, and many houses originate from the 18th and 19th century.

Wander around the picturesque Old Town and visit the cute shops and pretty cafés. If you are interested in culture, you could visit Finland’s national poet   J. L. Runeberg’s home  – which is also the oldest home museum in Finland, one of the many  art galleries  or  Postimäki Outdoor Museum , where you can see how the craftsmen lived in the 19th century.

For outdoor activities, visiting the National Urban Park is a must. It extends approximately 10 km south from Old Porvoo and 8 km east. There are many interesting routes – you can find  suggestions with maps here . Canoeing the Porvoo River or the nearby archipelago is also very popular, and you can try stand-up paddleboarding! For a tasty lunch or dinner, I recommend trying restaurant   Zum Beispiel . It offers high-quality food in a relaxed atmosphere and is also a certified organic restaurant. Reservation is recommended and can be made online. For a coffee break, try for example  Bar & Café Porvoon Paahtimo , which has its own roastery, or small, family-run  Café Fanny . Don’t forget trying Runeberg’s cake – it is a traditional Finnish cake developed in Porvoo in the 19th century.

How to get to Porvoo?

Porvoo can be reached by a bus from Helsinki. There are several daily connections by different providers; tickets are typically around 5-9 euros one-way. The bus trip takes about 50-60 minutes. 5. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, located around 80 km to the south of Helsinki. There are several daily ferry connections between Helsinki and Tallinn, which makes it easy to go for a Helsinki to Tallinn day trip. There are a lot of great things to do in Tallinn. The city was first established in the early medieval era and is actually the oldest capital in Northern Europe. Nowadays, Tallinn is a fascinating mix of both old and new – there are both trendy neighbourhoods and historical attractions and atmosphere.

The city centre of Tallinn is quite compact. On a day trip, it is easy to see the beautiful Old Town, which is one of the best preserved Hanseatic centres in the world. Visit some of the other main attractions – or focus on wandering around the pretty streets, dining or shopping. For the most popular photography spot, you should visit the Kohtuotsa viewing platform on the northern side of Toompea hill. You will have great panorama views over the roofs of Old Town, the modern city and the Gulf of Finland. During the summer, I recommend visiting  St. Olav’s Church tower and observation area  – the views are spectacular and well worthy of the 232 steps!

Tallinn has lots of great restaurants, eateries and cosy cafés – they are also much cheaper than in Helsinki. For lunch or dinner, I recommend trying  Salt , which is a nice bistro-style restaurant. It mixes different cuisines with a local twist, and the food is of excellent quality.

How to get to Tallinn?

The Helsinki Tallinn ferry trip is around 2 hours one-way, depending on the ferry. The day cruise ticket prices start from about 12-15 euros return but in popular times can be around 30-50 euros. 6. St.Petersburg, Russia

Good news, now, you can go on a day trip to St.Petersburg from Helsinki or Tallinn and take advantage of the 72-hour visa waiver. It works for all passengers arriving by ferry as a part of the organised excursion group. Check the exact visa rules before departing, as they can change at any time. From Helsinki, you can also travel to St. Petersburg by train, which takes 3,5 hours. St.Petersburg is a fantastic destination with its charming architecture, famous bridges and wonderful Hermitage museum .

Helsinki is one of those places that should be on everyone’s bucket list. It has so much natural beauty, unique history, and it’s popping with fun Scandinavian culture. I always recommend spending a couple of days in the city to really get a feel for the place. However, there are also some stunning day trips from Helsinki that are really accessible and easy to do.

I love a good day trip. It means that you get to see a ton of different places all in one trip, and honestly, Helsinki is the ideal base to explore from. 

Whether you’re looking for the wild spaces of Nuuksio National Park, want to indulge in sauna culture in Tampere, or check out a neighbouring capital with Estonia’s main city, Tallinn , there are so many options when it comes to Helsinki day trips.

There’s a little something for everyone with these awesome day trips. It doesn’t matter if you’re travelling with kiddos, are looking for a romantic weekend away, or are a solo adventurer looking for that next wild spot. Finland can deliver it all and more!

All of these day trips list here are a maximum of two hours away from Helsinki, so they really are doable in a day. I’ve also listed a few of my favourite tours too to make things even easier.

Day Trips from Helsinki, Finland

Nuuksio national park.

Considering that Nuuksio National Park is just an hour and a half away from Helsinki, it really does feel like you’re in a whole other world. This stunning and wild national park is filled with beautiful forests and lakes, and it’s the perfect antidote to city life.

Strap on your hiking boots and head out on one of the many well-marked trails around the national park. If you’re looking for a truly special way to see the park, join a guided tour on horseback – there are plenty of horse trails here too! 

This is one of the best national parks in Finland, so it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. If you’re looking for a tour from Helsinki, I’d really recommend this one which will take care of everything for you.

If you’re looking for old-world charm and quirky wooden architecture, head to the city of Porvoo . It’s around a 45-minute drive, or you can take a direct train which lasts around 50 minutes. One of the cool things about Porvoo is that it was the home of royalty way back in the 14th century, so there is a ton of history all around the city. 

More recently, Porvoo has become a home for amazing restaurants and cafes, looking to put the city on the map as a foodie destination. Wander around the cobble streets, take in the famous red houses, and enjoy the old port before sitting down for a delicious meal. Sounds like a perfect Helsinki day trip to me!

You might not have heard of the Finnish Riviera before, but after spending a day on the sunny and sandy shoes of Hanko, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t come sooner! It’s a classic summer spa town that has everything you need to enjoy a day of fun in the sun.

It’s two hours south of Helsinki and is the warmest part of Finland. Spend some time on the soft sands, enjoy the beach huts, and have some world-class cuisine and sun-filled cocktails on the East Harbour. There are also a ton of boutiques if you’re in need of a souvenir or two…

While Tallinn isn’t the closest Helsinki day trip on this list, it’s certainly one of the most popular. Hop on the 3-hour ferry from Helsinki and arrive in the beautiful Estonian capital city for your Tallinn day trip. Stop off in the Old Town, which is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and get lost in the cobbled alleyways and side streets.

As Tallinn has an interesting history that blends Soviet Russia and Scandinavia, I can honestly say it’s unlike anywhere else. There’s also a huge tech boom in the city, so there are always tons of creatives working alongside the old, fairytale architecture – it’s a super cool city to visit.

Step back in time to the UNESCO World Heritage site town of Rauma. With Old Rauma being filled with red wooden buildings that go back as far as the 18th century, this town feels like you’re time-traveling. From rows of shops to a market hall and more, Old Rauma sometimes feels like a living museum, but there are around 800 people who live in the 600 wooden houses. 

Located just under three hours away from the capital, a visit to Old Rauma is one of the best day trips from Helsinki!

Saimaa Lake District

In need of some water-based fun and relaxation? Head three and a half hours east to Finland’s largest lake, Saimaa , and the surrounding lake district. Whether you want to indulge in some watersports or fishing, or your want to stay on dry land and hike around the forests that surround the lakes, Saimaa is one of the most peaceful spots in Finland. 

Around the lake district, you’ll find several towns and villages with cafes, shops, and other amenities, but I’d recommend packing up a picnic and other seasonal supplies and getting back in touch with nature!

Suomenlinna

Located just a 15-minute ferry ride from central Helsinki, Suomenlinna is the perfect day tour if you’re short on time or don’t want to travel too far. This UNESCO site is a bastion of Finnish military history, as the whole island is one big sea fortress.

In fact, Suomenlinna has an interesting nickname – the Gibraltar of the North! You can wander around this island at your leisure – there are still plenty of barracks, cannons, and other 18th-century military items to learn about. It’s a great place if you love history and naval architecture!

You can even get a boat ticket and tour of the island together, so it’s a great way of exploring this fascinating fortress.

One of the things that Finland is most well-known for is its sauna culture. It’s amazing. Tampere is widely considered to be the sauna capital of Finland, which is why it’s undoubtedly one of the best day trips from Helsinki! The best bit? You can get there on public transport from Helsinki by taking a direct train north, lasting about an hour and 50 minutes. 

Traveling with kids in tow? Tampere is probably one of the best cities in Finland for family holidays with Särkänniemi Theme Park, the Spy Museum, and the Moomin Museum all calling this awesome city home. 

The former capital of Finland and the oldest city in the entire country is definitely one of the most popular Helsinki day trips that you can go on. Turku is around two hours away from Helsinki, so it’s a full-day trip, but there is so much to see and do when you get there, you’ll have no problem filling your day!

Turku is actually really well-known for its castle, which harks back to the 13th century. and its stunning cathedral. So, if you’re into history and architecture, you need to make sure that Turku is at the top of your Helsinki day trip itinerary!

Pihlajasaari

If you’re in Helsinki during the summer months and want a quintessential Scandinavian island day trip, jump on the 15-minute ferry out of Helsinki and head to Pihlajasaari . It’s super popular with tourists and locals alike thanks to its nature trails and sandy beaches. 

Be aware though, some of the beaches on Pihlajasaari are actually nudist beaches, so if you’re more reserved check which beach is which before you show up looking a bit overdressed! On the trails, you can also see a whole host of native flora and fauna, if you’re interested in the biology of Helsinki.

Located just a 25-minute drive or direct train ride away from Helsinki is the vibrant small city of Espoo. Here you’ll find tons of amazing museums including the Espoo Museum of Modern Art, as well as an amazing cathedral that can trace its roots all the way back to the 5th century!

Aside from museums and history in Espoo, you can also have tons of summer fun. Whether you’re looking to hop around the islands or descend on the Serena Water Amusement Park, it’s definitely the place to be on the long Finnish summer days. 

Hämeenlinna

If it’s history you’re after the town of Hämeenlinna has it by the bucket-load. This amazing old town traces its history back to medieval times and it shows in the architecture all around you. The main attraction is probably Häme Castle, located right on Vanajavesi Lake.

Over the years, Häme Castle has been a military fort, a residence for Swedish nobility, and even a prison. In fact, it only stopped being a prison in the 1970s after operating as one for around 150 years! Nowadays there are tons of cultural exhibitions and events that bring the history and culture of the town to life.

Looking for a city with a completely different vibe? Lahti is located around an hour north of Helsinki and was well known for being an industrial city. Like a lot of industrial towns and cities nowadays, Lahti has had a ton of investment and gentrification in the past few years, so it’s a cool blend of industrial and modern. 

One of the most famous things in Lahti is the symphony orchestra, so it’s well worth trying to grab tickets for a performance while you’re there for the day. You can also find a load of amazing eateries on the waterfront and a twice-daily fountain show which is pretty cool!

7 Epic Day Trips from Helsinki

Finland’s capital city, Helsinki, is a delight, especially in the long, long days of early summer.  The endless daylight makes you feel like you should fill every minute and be out exploring all the time.  The city is filled with Finns (and tourists) making the most of the light nights, but it’s a relaxed kind of full, not busy and frenzied.  It’s this liveableness of Helsinki that makes it perfect as a base, to explore some of the nearby locations on a day out.  So here’s our guide to taking day trips from Helsinki.

Moving on every day when you’re traveling is positively exhausting, and it’s so much better to stay in one place for a few days, a week, or longer and use that as your base, and simply head out for the day and come “home” to the same place.  It’s much more restful and I do think you actually see more and appreciate it more this way.  And so we stayed in Helsinki (and our itinerary for Helsinki is here ) and explored from there, on day trips to explore various places. 

#1 DAY TRIP

Visit Porvoo on a day trip from Helsinki

If you take just one day trip from Helsinki,  then head to the second oldest town in Finland, the UNESCO World Heritage Porvoo.  It’s an absolute delight.

The 7 Best Day Trips from Helsinki

Much of what is best about Finland is out of the cities, it’s in the old towns, in the National Parks, and on the waterways that are so much a part of Finland.  Using Helsinki as a base means that you’ve got a great variety of places that you can go to just for the day, or heck actually even half a day – here’s the best of them.

1. Take a Day Trip from Helsinki to Porvoo

My first pick is the number one place to go to for a day trip from Helsinki and it’s Finland’s second oldest town, Porvoo.  It’s one of Finland’s famous “wooden towns”, still sporting the riverside wooden houses that were built in the 1760s.  This is the home of one of the founders of Finnish independence (which was won in 1917), it’s the home of Finland’s National Poet, Johan Ludvig Runeberg and it’s a glorious place to visit.  This is the easiest way to visit.

Now you can easily jump on a bus from Helsinki to get here.  Or you can take a day trip and make it easy on yourself (and get an English-speaking guide to help you explore and understand Porvoo and Finland – I recommend this tour ).  If you’re driving you can easily get here too, just take care to park in the right place, and display the parking disc to make sure you don’t get a ticket.  There’s more about buses to take to Porvoo, parking, things to do, and what to eat in Porvoo in my guide here .

2. Take a Day trip to Tallinn, Estonia by Ferry from Helsinki

There is something very cool about visiting another country on a day trip.  And Tallinn, Estonia’s capital city is perfect for that from Helsinki.  It’s just 2 hours across the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia on the ferry.  And it’s a fabulous way to maximize your travel time too – sleep, eat, or just plain relax.  You can even upgrade on the ferry and travel in one of the Comfort Class or Business Class Lounges and make it a real treat of a day trip.  Check ticket availability here.

Visiting Tallinn from Helsinki means that you’ll get to sightsee on the way there and back as well – the views of the archipelago as you go are superb.  We first visited Tallinn in 2014 and this city is absolutely glorious and well worth the second, or third visit.  Day trips on the ferry mean that you’ll get about 10 hours to explore Tallinn.  So take a walking tour, visit the Viru Hotel and learn about the KGB (yes that KGB), and eat some amazing food at the Maiasmokk Café:   It’s a fabulous place to visit.  Book your Ferry to Tallinn here.

3. Take a day trip on the water in Helsinki’s Archipelago

The archipelago surrounding Helsinki has more than 300 islands, and spending at least some of the time on the water around here is beautiful.  There are heaps of ferries here and even if you just take the ferry to Vallisaari Fortress Island then you’ll see some of it, but for the best experience of the archipelago and a slice of Finnish life, you’ll want to head out to a smaller island, find yourself a summer cottage, have a BBQ and a sauna.  

Now that is Finnish life encapsulated.  There are a variety of ways that you can do this.  Obviously, you need to know someone with a summer cottage if you want the entire experience.  However, this day trip includes it all.  

If you prefer not to go the whole hog with the summer cottage, BBQ, and sauna, then there are other options too.  Simply buy a ferry ticket to Vallisaari Island , which is located near Suomenlinna Island.  There are a variety of departures each day from the Helsinki Market Square Keisariluodonlaituri-pier next to the Korkeasaari Zoo ferry.

4. Spend a day on the fortress island of Suomenlinna

I’m staying close to Helsinki for my next option – as I truly loved our visits to Suomenlinna.   This UNESCO  World Heritage site is just a scenic 30-minute ferry ride from Helsinki and it’s a stunning day out.   This is a great Helsinki day trip for exercise, as you can wander to your heart’s content on Suomenlinna.  Just buy a ferry ticket and head out. 

Once you get to the island, Suomenlinna is home to a famous fortress, but there is a LOT of the island to discover.  There’s more detail on why this is a UNESCO World Heritage site here. – to bring the history of the island (and there are centuries of it), then taking a guided walking tour of the island is the best option.  We spent hours here – and actually came twice during our visit to Helsinki, we loved it so much.  This small group guided tour of the city then takes you over to the fortress and provides a walking tour there as well.  It’s a great value deal with which to understand and see more of both Suomenlinna AND Helsinki.

5. Visit Turku & Naantali for the Day from Helsinki

Turku is Finland’s oldest city, dating from 1229, and it is home to an archipelago of 20,000 islets and islands.  It is a fabulously laid-back city, in Finland’s southwest it is easily reachable from Helsinki for a day trip.  Extremely close by is the waterside town of Naantali.  Not only is this gorgeous town, rated as one of the best summer towns in Finland, but it is home to one of Finland’s most famous exports – Moomin World – a theme park based on the best-selling Finnish author Tove Jansson’s books, about the Moomins.  Leaving the theme park aside, Naantali has gloriously painted wooden houses on the waterfront and fabulous places to eat and drink too. 

A trip here is like coming to another world.  So, yes, definitely take a day trip to Turku and Naantali.  You can read about Naantali in my guide to the Finland Archipelago . The best way to take a trip out here from Helsinki is to rent a car and drive, it will give you the most flexibility and it means that you’ll be able to visit both Turku and Naantali easily.  I covered what you should do while in Turku in my guide here.

6. Visit Nuuksio National Park from Helsinki

Nuuksio National Park is actually located within the boundaries of Helsinki – and that means that getting out into nature this close to the city was never easier.  You can get here easily on public transport, it’s just 90 minutes traveling that way from Helsinki.  And that means you’ll be able to visit one of Finland’s top 10 natural attractions right from the city center.  Exploring the National Park with a biologist guide is the best way to see this park, as there’s the chance to see rare wildlife, such as the Siberian flying squirrel, seen only here and in Estonia within Europe’s borders.  Check availability for this small group guided tour here.

7. Go Wild Bear Watching from Helsinki

I can’t pretend that this isn’t one of the best ever things to do.  We went to this bear house and spent the night watching for bears in the long nights of June.  And it was glorious.  Now you can book Bear Watching here  

We’ve seen bears in Alaska, and California, but never here in Europe (apart from at the Dancing Bear Rescue center in Bulgaria ) so this was a magical experience.  While most wild bear-watching means that you need to spend the night in a hide, you can actually spend the night in the bear-watching house that the Bear Center has built.  It is an amazing experience.  You can read about our experiences bear watching in Finland here.

Truly once in a lifetime. Although, you know writing this I am very tempted to go again. This is available between April and October and there’s a more than 80% chance of seeing bears, which is phenomenal.  Check availability and book your dates ASAP.
