From the African Bushes to Indian Bureaucracy: The Long Journey of the Safari Suit

When a sarkari babu (government officer) or baniya (Marwari businessman) stepped out of his home in a safari suit, the sheen of the outfit accorded him a sense of respectability and sincerity.

From the African Bushes to Indian Bureaucracy: The Long Journey of the Safari Suit

In the series ‘Icons of India’ , we take a look at the iconic objects that collectively defined the Indian experience over the past 68 years. From things that brought the world to our living rooms to tasty treats, take a nostalgic journey down memory lane!

M y late grandfather was a simple man. He grew up in Rajasthan and helped his elder brother farm.

Upon realising that the older sibling was taking advantage of him—minimal rations for food, some scraps for cloth and no money—the elders intervened, and my grandfather moved to Hyderabad to eke out a living for his wife, and their five children.

With help from family, he set up a small business, selling edible oil. It did well enough to meet their basic needs—“ mota khana, mota pehnna, mast rehna ,”—my grandmother often says, recalling the times.

It simply meant that coarse cloth and wholesome food was all they needed for a good life.

The lady of the house made do with a handful of sarees , while younger kids used books passed down from the older ones. Cloth bought from the wholesale market sufficed for all their clothing needs.

As the years went by, the business took off, and the family’s fortunes turned. This began to reflect in Bapu ’s style as well—well-oiled hair, jutis and a safari suit.

Come hail, storm, or the 500 days of Hyderabad’s summer, if my Bapu stepped out of home, this was his attire. (While Bapu means ‘father’, I used it for my grandfather.)

At approximately Rs 40 per metre, the safari cloth was a luxury. Along with the tailoring cost of Rs 45-50, this safari suit, once made, would last years.

You would be lucky if you could get basic tailoring mends done at that rate today, forget getting a fully-stitched safari suit for an adult man.

While it appealed to the masses, it certainly wasn’t an affordable piece of clothing.

The appeal of the safari suit

indian safari dress

It was the cultural elite of the society—the educated middle or upper-middle class—whose acceptance of the outfit adorned it with qualities not necessarily intended.

Many of them still entertained a hangover of its colonial past, so those who held positions of power—like businessmen and bureaucrats—were considered by themselves and others—to be a class apart.

When a sarkari babu (government officer) or baniya ( Marwari businessman) stepped out of his home in a safari suit, the sheen of the outfit accorded him a sense of respectability and sincerity.

Geeta Khanna agrees. She says, “Post-independence, the British ‘hangover’ has unfortunately lingered on way too long, and the safari suit was an acceptable formal/official outfit for the ‘summer’ of India. It also spelled prosperity and an anglicised mindset that was considered superior.”

She is the principal director of the Hirumchi Styling Company , which provides creative and design solutions in India and abroad.

From the African bushes to Indian bureaucracy—the long journey of the safari suit

Ted Lapidus and Yves St Laurent , designers from the style heaven, France, are credited with designing the two-piece safari suit.

Initially intended for safari tours in Africa, variations of the suit can also be traced to the uniforms of the British Army stationed in South Africa during the Second Boer War.

The soldiers needed light and breathable clothing to be active in the heat. For this, their uniforms had to be made of cotton to keep them cool. The button-down shirt would have four large pockets on the chest and waist areas so that they could carry bullets, weapons, and binoculars, perhaps a bottle of water. The shirt had a large collar and a belt at the waist, which kept everything together; and the pants too would come with pockets.

In the book Fashion and Masculinities in Popular Culture , Adam Geczy and Vicky Karaminas explore how popular culture aided the general acceptance of the outfit.

The tailored suit gained popularity during the 1930s and continued to be fashionable attire for men up until the seventies when the unisex safari suit became du jour. While the tailored suit is associated with the ‘Establishment,’ the safari suit made popular by Yves St Laurent, represented adventure and freedom from life’s constraints (like that offered by the hunt) and worn later by Roger Moore as James Bond. As Sarah Gillian suggests, the suit initially signified ‘sobriety, simplicity, conformity and restraint’, the man’s tailored suit functions to construct an image of an idealized male body.’ The 007 fandom in the western world and that of the ‘angry young man’ in Indian cinema caused people to imitate their styles. Young employees of corporate organisations and bureaucrats wore them to the workplace as Little Master Sunil Gavaskar modelled them in advertisements, while actors Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Khanna wore them on the screen in dazzling colours .

Politician and bureaucrat Kunwar Natwar Singh was commonly seen in the outfit. As a young diplomat in Indira Gandhi’s secretariat in 1966, he was part of a group of six, of varied ages, from different backgrounds and mother tongues. But they all shared a similarity.

“Seven out of seven of us wore safari suits,” said Mr Singh. “That’s how common they were.”

Another politician, SMI Asseer, told the India Today magazine that he had as many as 25 safari suits in his wardrobe. Similarly, renowned industrialist Rahul Bajaj seemingly had an inexhaustible wardrobe of the suits.

They seemed to be everywhere—synced with people’s aspirations and their fashion sensibilities.

Rishabh Khandelwal feels that the shirt-like comfort, combined with the suit-like “sophistication” made the safari suit a popular choice for people, ideal for Indian weather.

He is the co-founder and managing director of Hangrr , a custom clothing brand for men. He points out how the “unlined, unstructured” safari suit jackets are similar to military uniforms in style and design.

Rishabh says, “It became easier and inexpensive to produce. Considering the socio-economic landscape of the time, it found the perfect fodder to reach mass popularity.”

Raymond, Vimal and DCM Textiles became some of the foremost suppliers in the country. However, around the same time, the 80s, he notes how the outfit began to lose its relevance in the west.

“With a slimmer silhouette governing the world of fashion, the safari suit started losing its dominance.”

The relic of a bygone era

indian safari dress

The liberalisation of the 90s opened up India’s economy to a host of western products. It also marked a shift in the country’s geopolitical landscape at the turn of the century. We could bid adieu to the pains of colonialism and move away from the uncertainty of post-colonialism, and finally herald a new kind of modernity.

One such change was in the representation of ideals through clothing.

Khadi , for instance, was a symbol of nationalism during the struggle for Indian independence, when one was not simply accepting a piece of cloth made from a particular yarn—the crucial point was the rejection of foreign fabric.

When viewed in the “objective” light of the present, far from the yoke of colonialism, khadi was losing its sheen.

Dipesh Chakrabarty explains this change in his paper Clothing the political man: A reading of the use of khadi/white in Indian public life .

Khadi, once described by Nehru as ‘the livery of freedom’ and by Susan Bean (to whom I owe this quote from Nehru) as the ‘fabric of Indian independence’, now stands unambiguously for the reverse of its nationalist definition.

I have therefore read it as the site of the desire for alternative modernity, a desire made possible by the contingencies of British colonial rule, now impossible under the conditions of capitalism and yet circulating insistently within an everyday object of Indian public life, the (male) politician’s uniform. I do not think that khadi convinces anybody any longer of the Gandhian convictions of the wearer but if my reading of it has any point to it, then its disappearance, were it to happen, would signify the demise of a deeper structure of desire and would signal India’s complete integration into the circuits of global capital. Although  khadi and the safari suit are less common today, they have not yet been rendered irrelevant. Whether for the sake of nostalgia or as experiments of retro fashion, these icons have been etched in the patchwork of Indianness.

Rishabh notes that there has been an increased demand for safari suits over the past few years, with the attempts to “bridge the gap between the old and the new, and provide safari suits with a modern fit and cut”.

He tells me about designing clothes for a recent beach wedding, where the party was dressed in light blue and beige safari suits, which were “structured, sweat-resistant and wrinkle-free fabrics”.

He adds, “They were slim-cut like modern suits and remained airy for a perfect beach wedding.”

Apart from his team at Hangrr, he tells me that designers across the world are incorporating similar designs into their clothing lines. Some examples are four-buttoned military jackets with shorts and safari-style shirts and jackets.

He concludes, “The traditional colours, patterns, cuts and designs might no longer be relevant, but innovation and modern techniques will keep safari suits trendy for quite some time. And, like everything else, personalisation plays a great role in getting it right—we must make the safari suit relevant to the person’s style, taste and need. This has helped us keep this timeless outfit relevant and desirable, not only in India but across the world.”

The Guide To What To Wear On A Tiger Safari In India

Published by vibhav on 05/01/2024 05/01/2024.

When planning the first trip to a new location, the question of what to pack and what not to pack always arises. If it’s a foreign country, we must consider various cultural and local customs concerning our clothing. Additionally, climate and weather conditions play a crucial role in deciding what clothes to pack.

The most challenging aspect of packing arises when planning a safari in a new location. Every location and forest differs significantly; what might be suitable for the African savannah’s climate and landscape may not be appropriate for the forests of Southeast Asian countries or the Amazonian rainforests.

While most travel agents can efficiently help plan your trip, only a ground agent can provide information on all the minute details of your journey. With a team of experts boasting over three decades of experience, Nature Safari India understands the challenges tourists face when planning their tiger safari in India. Therefore, we’re here to offer suggestions on what to wear when planning a tiger safari in India.

Table of Contents

1. Understanding the Terrain for a Tiger Safari in India

1.1. climate variability across national parks & tiger reserves in india.

India, being a vast country, is divided into 10 distinct biogeographic zones encompassing diverse terrains such as deserts, rainforests, mountains, mangroves, and more. The nation proudly boasts an extensive network of 998 protected areas, comprising 106 national parks, 567 wildlife sanctuaries, and 325 other categories of protected areas. Additionally, there exists a network of 54 tiger reserves.

Tigers, being highly adaptable big cats, are distributed across the country, except for the high-altitude Himalayan region and the deserts in the western region. Each tiger reserve features its own microclimate within a landscape, and dressing appropriately for these climatic conditions not only ensures our comfort but also aids in better camouflage to prevent startling the animals.

1.2 Insight into Terrain Challenges

Tiger reserves across India showcase diverse landscapes and microclimates that foster a wide range of natural vegetation. This encompasses the lush evergreen forests of the Western Ghats, the arid expanses of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in western India, the humid mangrove forests of Sundarbans, the coniferous woodlands of the Himalayas in Corbett Tiger Reserve, the deciduous forests of central India, and the high elephant grasses of Kaziranga.

Tigers, well adapted to these varying climatic conditions, inhabit terrains within the reserves that span mountains, rivers, plains, grasslands, steep hills, and ravines. However, they remain unaccustomed to human disturbances, which explains their avoidance of urban areas. Each ecosystem—forests, grasslands, and savannah—holds its uniqueness, requiring appropriate attire not only for comfort but also to blend harmoniously with the surroundings.”.

2. Practical Attire for a Tiger Safari in India

2.1 optimal clothing choices for a tiger safari in india’s varied climate.

India, being a tropical country, experiences four distinct seasons across most of its regions: summer, winter, monsoon, and autumn. While most tiger reserves remain closed for safaris during the monsoon due to heavy rainfall, some reserves open certain areas that receive comparatively less rain.

Winters tend to be harsh in many reserves, necessitating the use of multiple layers of warm clothing during early morning safaris. As the sun rises, these layers might need to be shed to adapt to the increasing warmth. Summers are notably hot, demanding light and breathable cotton clothing . Autumns offer a comfortable climate, sometimes requiring a light woolen garment during the early morning tiger safaris.

During the monsoon, it’s essential to carry rain covers, typically provided by most lodges for safari outings. In some reserves, rain can be unpredictable, leading to experiences ranging from light showers to heavy downpours, occasionally accompanied by storms.

2.2 Selecting Clothing that Offers Protection from Insects and Sun During a Tiger Safari in India

Tiger reserves are not only habitats for large mammals but also home to numerous insects, some of which can cause significant pain from stings, although they are not venomous. Additionally, mosquitoes are prevalent, particularly during the early and late hours of the day. Visitors are advised to use insect repellent creams to prevent such encounters. It’s also crucial to avoid using perfumes or scents that attract insects, particularly wasps and bees .

Wearing full-sleeved clothing serves a dual purpose: it not only shields against insects but also provides protection from the intense tropical sun. These reserves, located in tropical regions, experience direct sunlight, especially during the warmer parts of the day. Utilizing sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and full-length clothing aids in safeguarding oneself from harmful sunrays .

3. Safari Gear Selection for a Tiger Safari in India

3.1 essential accessories to carry during tiger safari in india.

Hats, sunglasses, and scarves are essential items to pack for your tiger safari in India . A quality hat serves the dual purpose of shielding your head and face from harmful sun rays and safeguarding your hair from dust. While on a jeep during a tiger safari, dust stirred by the preceding vehicle might be a concern. To shield yourself from the dust, it’s advisable to cover your face with a mask or scarf . Additionally, using sunglasses is crucial for protecting your eyes , not only from the sun but also from airborne dust particles.

3.2 Footwear Selection for Wildlife Safari in India

There are comfortable and durable footwear options available for exploring wildlife in India. While tiger safaris in India are primarily conducted via jeeps, some reserves such as Satpura Tiger Reserve and Kanha Tiger Reserve in Central India offer walking safaris as well. The safari hours vary depending on the time of year and the specific tiger reserve.

Spending extended periods in jeeps during safaris necessitates comfortable and breathable shoes . It’s essential to choose footwear that provides comfort and durability to ensure an enjoyable and hassle-free wildlife exploration experience.

4. Respectful Dressing During a Tiger Safari in India: Cultural Considerations

4.1 dress codes and cultural etiquette in indian wildlife reserves.

While on your tiger safari in India, there might be opportunities to visit local communities. During such visits, it’s advisable to carry a scarf and wear clothing that doesn’t expose much skin . The scarf can be used to cover your head when visiting religious places or out of respect for local customs . While on the tiger safari in India itself, there’s less concern about clothing choices, but it’s preferable to avoid garments that excessively expose skin .

4.2 Balancing Comfort with Respect for Local Customs

During a visit to a tiger safari, it’s essential to strike a balance between comfort and respecting local customs. Carrying a scarf or a piece of cloth allows you to cover yourself whenever and wherever necessary.

5. Packing Tips for a Tiger Safari in India: Efficient and Versatile Wardrobe Choices

5.1 efficient packing tips for your safari tour in india.

Its necessary to pack the things efficiently so that whenever it is required you don’t need take out each item every time. Make a list of all the items required for different occasions and pack all the items accordingly in different pouches.

5.2 Layering Techniques for Temperature Fluctuations During a Tiger Safari in India

During a tiger safari in India , temperatures can fluctuate significantly. For instance, during an early morning safari in central India, temperatures might drop to around 5⁰C, but as the day progresses, they can rise to approximately 25⁰C. This fluctuation necessitates wearing different layers of clothing that can be gradually removed as the temperature increases. Similarly, during an afternoon safari, you may start with more layers as the temperature begins to decrease.

6. Outfit Ideas for a Tiger Safaris in India

6.1 practical outfits for early morning and evening safaris.

It is recommended to wear loose and comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather and climate conditions during morning and afternoon tiger safaris in India. It’s advisable to avoid bright colors and, if feasible, consider wearing tropical camouflage outfits for better blending with the surroundings.

6.2 Fashionable Yet Functional Attire for Enjoying Wildlife Safari Experience in India

Wearing a branded cargo pant and shirt along with a multi-pocket vest and a hat not only offers a stylish safari look but also provides great comfort. The multiple pockets are convenient for keeping various items organized and separate during the excursion.

Preparing with the right attire is key to ensuring an unforgettable tiger safari experience in India. By adhering to the recommended clothing choices – opting for comfortable, layered outfits suited to fluctuating temperatures, avoiding bright colors, and considering camouflage for blending in with the surroundings – adventurers can embark on an immersive journey with confidence. Remember, the perfect combination of comfort, practicality, and respect for local customs sets the stage for a truly remarkable tiger safari in India, where every moment amidst the wilderness becomes a treasured memory.”

Safari Suit

Safari Suit

Indian Safari Suit (Image Courtesy: Fashionably Desi)

Safari Suits means clothing created for cross-country expeditions. Due to its cool fabric, safari jackets were initially designed for military purposes in Britain woven out of the cotton drill and were to be used in warm climatic conditions.

Another use of Safari suit was during Safaris in jungles where its light green color was used as a camouflage which made the militants blend in with the natural surroundings. It was also the most common form of clothing among professionals working in both government and nongovernment organizations.

Origin and History

The safari suit was a gift by British Raj to India.

In India, Safari suit was seen as a big shift from the Gandhian Khadi to new modern western dress code. Safari Suits became popular amongst masses only after 1990 when Reliance Industries started producing Safari Suit clothing within India. Before that the access was limited to bureaucratic and political classes.

Another prime reason for the popularity of safari suits in India is its low cost and better usability. Few popular Indian personalities who flaunt the understated charm of the Safari suit include Industrialist Rahul Bajaj, Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, and late Bollywood stars Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Khanna.

Apart from India, Safari suits became popular in United Arab Emirates, South East Asia, and Africa as well. Moreover, Safari suits were a common style during the Pop culture and were commonly seen in James Bond movies as well.

The acceptance for safari suit had become so apparent that unofficially it was the official uniform for the urban educated professionals. As the popularity of safari suit increased, the bureaucratic uniform soon became a fashion statement during weddings, parties and other public occasions. Safari suit truly became the status symbol of the urban elite and professionals.

Safari suits were also known as Leisure suits due to their casual and comfortable design. Initially, safari jackets were made for military purposes, thus it carried rough and tough styles with patch pockets and open collars. The fabric used was also coarse and thick. The suit can be worn with or without a belt. One of the most common additions to the safari suit is a round hat.

Safari Jacket

Safari Jacket

The overall style has evolved over the last several years which has made this timeless piece of clothing even more appealing and in sync with today’s trends. Finer fabrics are also used, which are in contrast to the coarser forms of materials used initially. These days women don the Safari jackets as well with skirts or jeans. Several designers have given the masculine Safari Jacket a touch of elegance in order for it to appeal to more feminine tastes.

Innovations

Safari suits have undergone many changes over a period of time, including the changes in the purpose for which it is worn. With the change in usability, finer cloth is used to make the Safari Jackets for example Linen, Khadi, and Cotton. Moreover, the collars have been modified to a large extent and are more ‘shirt like’ and smaller.

If a woman wishes to dress with an ‘on the edge’ appeal, then a Safari jacket can do complete justice to that. At the same time, a Safari jacket helps any man to bring about the manliness’ in his style while giving a chic and understated style statement. The safari suit can be both with full sleeves and short sleeves. The colors are generally in lighter shades.

Making a Fashion Statement

Ladies Safari Suit

Ladies Safari Suit

For men, a nice tie in a contrasting color would add the X-factor which would look classy and trendy all at the same time.

For women who wish to wear the Safari Suit should opt for minimal accessories since the basic essence of the Safari suit exhibits simple elegance and understated style. A nice chunky watch or bracelet would add the perfect feminine touch to the overall style.

Weather Suitability

The traditional Safari Suits are best for hot and humid weather conditions since they are mostly made out of heat beating’ fabrics such as Cotton , Linen or Khadi. However, due to fashion revamping the basic style of the Safari suit, one can now find them in warmer materials like Tweed or wool which make it perfect for colder climates as well.

Maintenance

For Safari Suits made out of Cotton or Linen, a machine wash would be best. However, for sturdier fabrics that require more care like Tweed or Wool, a dry clean method would be the best option.

Interesting Facts and Comparisons

  • Roger Moore wore safari in more than 3 James Bond movies: The Man with Golden Sun, Moonraker and Octopussy.
  • Natwar Singh, an Indian diplomat and ex-foreign minister, while returning from United Nation’s summit with his colleagues from different ages, regions and backgrounds, noted that each one of them were wearing Safari suits.

What to Wear On Safari: A Complete Packing List & Outfit Examples

Home » Asia

I’ve been on a few safaris as a backpacker in India but hadn’t seen a tiger yet, so was stoked to get to visit Bandhavgarh Park – the park with the highest density of tigers in India. I wasn’t sure what to wear on safari, though! As a backpacker, I just threw on what was in my backpack but I’m not really rocking ali baba pants anymore and as this was a boutique safari lodge it required what they call “smart safari clothing”.

I actually had some cute safari outfits in mind from pieces I had picked up, so I didn’t need to go shopping for this trip. I’m going to share a detailed safari packing list and some exact women’s safari clothing that is stylish AND comfortable while still being “smart”.

You’ll also need some safari gear to go along with your outfits, so I’ll share all those details, too! I’m going to start out with some tips on just want to expect on safari in terms of the dirt, sun, weather, colors to avoid, and other things to make note of.

What to Wear on Safari | My Safari Packing List

Just how dirty will you get.

The roads are so dusty! Most safari parks are shut during the rainy season, so you’ll likely be on a safari when the roads are dusty. With an open-air vehicle, you’ll have the dust get on your skin, hair, and face plus of course all your clothes. Add on top of that there will be more Jeeps around that are kicking up dust.

Beyond dusty roads, there are some times when you might be able to get out of the safari vehicle (when it’s safe) so you’ll want to make sure you’re covered from your ankles to your collar bones! It just will make it so much nicer when you strip off your dirty clothes at the end of the day. Basically, this is not the time for a silky white dress! If you take a backpack, camera, hat, or anything – just know it’s ALL going to be covered in dust.

One other thing to avoid? Fleeces. They just attract the dirt in a big way! Fabrics that are similar to a windbreaker are best. You’ll likely wear the same jacket again and again. and it’s nice to just shake the dirt off so it’s fairly clean the next time you put it on.

What should I expect from the weather?

You are going to need layers. Safaris are usually sunrise and sunset that means it can be cool at the start of a morning safari and the end of an evening safari. But, when the sun is high in the sky, it’s HOT. It’s not a big problem; layers are key.

Don’t forget sun protection!

I wore a baseball hat the whole time. It protects from the sun but it also keeps my hair from getting tangled from the wind. I wore Sun Bum face stick sunscreen .

What colors to wear

You have to wear neutral earth-tone colors. Don’t be the person in a bright pink dress scaring off all the animals! You want to blend in. Tans and browns are good. Don’t wear white.

What about when I’m back at the hotel?

My resort was pretty luxurious, and if yours is too, you want to wear something “smart”. A nice midi dress, culottes with a button-up, or jeans and a linen top would be good options.

What Safari Gear You’ll Want to Bring

Safety/first aid.

Your safari car will likely have all the basic first aid things you might need but it doesn’t hurt to take some to have in your room or in your backpack (or in my case, fanny pack ). One thing you need? bug repellant. I love the [easyazon_link identifier=”B004NRPD7G” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]mosquito wipes[/easyazon_link], so much easier to use than spray.

Camera Equipment

My camera is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B079VDF7ZG” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]Panasonic Lumix GX85[/easyazon_link] and for the safari, I used my favorite zoom lens, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MU3WOVP” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]Lumix G Vario 35-100mm F2.8[/easyazon_link] . This is zoom but not one of those intense ones that are huge. It’s small, and I carry it in my purse. I also recommend using a [easyazon_link identifier=”B07CGTVKSP” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]MegaGear leather case[/easyazon_link] to protect it from dust and dirt.

You safari might have [easyazon_link identifier=”B06XT7M6P5″ locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]binoculars[/easyazon_link] you can use, but if they don’t you DO want to have some yourself. You will also want an [easyazon_link keywords=”travel alarm clock” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]alarm clock[/easyazon_link] in case you don’t use your phone and for the lodge grounds, [easyazon_link keywords=”headlamp” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]a headlamp[/easyazon_link] is so helpful.

My Safari Outfits in India

samode safari lodge review

Cooler Weather Safari Outfit

I am a fan of Anatomie clothing . It is lightweight, takes up essentially no luggage space, is wrinkle-resistant, can be hand-washed in cold water with hardly any effort, and dry in five minutes with a hair drier. According to their site, two pairs of pants weigh less than a banana. That saves a lot of space compared to two pairs of jeans! Plus, they are comfortable, neutral, and look safari-smart.

It’s expensive, and it’s something that you should invest in if you will be traveling a lot and want something you can pack without thinking. I wore these same outfits in Panama for all my adventure days and it’s nice to just have it for future trips.

This outfit is the “Kenya Safari Jacket” in Khaki . The pants are the “Luisa” in Khaki .

Not pictured, I also took the metallic Merika windbreaker.

I wore my FAVORITE UGG sneakers which I’ve shared about over and over, the “Tye” ones in the color “Slate”. I wore a black Free People bandana shirt with the Rolling Stones on it so it would look more chill and not like a “safari outfit”. I also took my NY Yankees hat , which is on every trip with me. I wore my Ray-Ban Wayfarer’s because they are big and cover a lot of my face. Take a scarf with you as well for on the car to protect your face.

Warmer Weather Safari Outfit

The above outfit is also Anatomie. The pants are the “Techno Chino” in grey and the top is “Melissa” tee in Grey . Again, I wore my UGG Tye tennies ,  Ray-Ban Wayfarer’s , and my NY Yankees hat . With this, I wore the same Merika windbreaker I mentioned above.

You might do four safaris on a trip (there are two a day at most places and many people do 3 nights/2 days on safari because it’s kind of pricey to do more), so I wore these two outfits twice each, except I changed tee shirts! But the same pants and jackets because they are that Anatomie fabric that you just brush off the dirt and it’s fine. They are so thin that you don’t sweat in them but also protect from the chill in the mornings.

Our safari gave us blankets to cover up with when it was cold!

indian safari dress

I also just throw in my Homebodii monogrammed pink satin PJ’s . I’m sure now you’ve seen them in basically all my packing posts! I almost always travel with a hair scarf these days and I’m wearing an Anthropologie ones in the photos above. I wore it up to the lodge with jeans and a linen button up one evening and it dresses up any outfit.

Hotel Lounging

I have two Free People “Love to Love You Midi Dresses” . I have a yellow one I loved but they went on clearance (and still are) so I got this sage green one which was $39 (steal) and perfect for a safari lodge. I took my UGG Kari Slides .

Really the UGG Tye sneakers and Kari slides are all I need these days when I travel in terms of shoes!

I didn’t take more photos at the lodge, but I did wear other clothes. My lodge safari clothes were:

  • Levi’s that I wore with a GAP linen button-up in a cream color
  • Linen overalls in navy blue that I wore a long-sleeve shirt underneath
  • A long maxi dress from Lulu’s – maxi dresses are great, and the linen button-up over it

Samode Safari Lodge Review

I took two swimsuits only because I was also on vacation going to other places. I took my favorite Melissa Odabash swimsuit , the “Mexico” which I have in black and brown. I also took my L*Space “Crossroads Texture” bikini with the Rebel top and Frenchi bottom .

A Sample Safari Packing List

Luggage & carry-on.

For luggage, I took my large Ebags Fortis bag and my small Ebags Fortis Pro ( review of this one here ). I’ve been such a Delsey luggage fan for so long, but lately have been gravitating to this set. The carry-on especially is my favorite by far right now. It blows away the “Away” bag!

Personal Item / daily bag

I took my current favorite backpack, the Lo and Sons Hanover , as my personal item on the plane ( review of the brand here ). This is IDEAL because it has all my electronics in it but they are in the organized, pocketed inner-shell. You then unclip that and take it out, leaving an empty backpack and all your stuff that was in it, still in the inner-shell, in the hotel room. I then took the outer shell as my safari bag! It was perfect. I threw in my hat, scarf, sunglasses, ID (you need to take ID for parks!), bug repellant, camera, and lenses.

10 Things to Know Before Taking a Bandhavgarh National Park Safari

Safari Clothing

  • 4 Shirts (two long-sleeve and two short-sleeve)
  • 2 jackets (one heavier than the other)
  • 2 Safari pants
  • 1 linen button-up shirt
  • 1 Leggings for layering if it’s very cold
  • Baseball Hat
  • Tennis Shoes for the safari
  • Scarf (large for face and small for hair)

indian safari dress

Hotel Clothing

  • Pantsuit (linen is nice because it’s warmer than cotton and looks nicer)
  • Culottes (I love the chinos from Anthropologie )
  • 2 maxi dresses
  • Button-up shirt
  • 1 long-sleeve shirt
  • 1 tee shirt
  • Swimsuit cover-up
  • Conditioner
  • It’s a 10 (you’ll need detangler from all the wind!)
  • Lotion (you need some serious body lotion because the dust dries you out, I like Aveda )
  • Because it’s dry, also Vitamin C serum and a face mask (loving the Milk mask from Patchology )
  • BB Cream or Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer
  • [easyazon_link identifier=”B079VDF7ZG” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]Panasonic Lumix GX85[/easyazon_link]
  • [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MU3WOVP” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]Lumix G Vario 35-100mm F2.8[/easyazon_link]
  • [easyazon_link keywords=”Headlamp” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]Headlamp[/easyazon_link]
  • [easyazon_link identifier=”B07CXG6C9W” locale=”US” tag=”Hipinhee-20″]Kindle[/easyazon_link] (so much downtime and many lodges won’t have WiFI!)

Overall, the thing that made my trip easy was the Anatomie outfits. If I had the budget, I’d get one more to take with me but they are pricey – I’m happy I have the two I do, and they take up NO space and are so nice to throw on and feel totally “ready” and looking good and “smart” but also cute and blending it safari-style!

India is a land of culture, but it’s also the land of amazing safari tours! Whether it’s your first time to do an Indian safari, or you’re just looking to make your next experience better (because let’s face it, when is just one safari enough?), here are some handy tips to make your tour a blast.

Indian Safari Packing List

1. pack appropriate safari clothing.

Simply packing your favorite outfit won’t do. As in many parts of Asia, Indian weather can change drastically from the humid heat of summer to the chilling frost of winter. You won’t want to go on a wintertime morning safari without a warm coat.

Also, you wouldn’t want to trek through the jungles in summer without appropriate clothing. So do your research on the weather and dress appropriately. Little things like a blanket, a scarf, a hat, or a fan could go a long way, too.

The best solution is to dress in layers as the temperature can go from freezing to hot within a few hours.

2. Bring some shade

The Indian sun makes the safari look all the more vibrant, but it can be merciless on your skin! Bring some shade along with you, preferably a hat and some sunscreen. You will most likely be sitting in an open jeep, so it helps to have something to fight the sun’s rays with.

Hat, sun screen and sunglasses - Packing list Safari in India

3. Bright colors are a no-no!

I learned it the hard way — wearing bright colors is a big no-no for safaris. I wasn’t able to use the coat I brought because of this! Nature isn’t used to bright colors, and it tends to agitate animals when they see these.

Choose clothes in dull colors like mute shades of green, brown, or black. Don’t go for bright reds, yellows, oranges, and pinks unless you want to be seen as a moving target for the animals you’re following!

4. Bring something for the dust and grime

Being in an open jeep will expose you to a lot of dust, and if you’re there on a rainy morning then the tires could also kick up some mud. Even if you’re in a bus, you’re still exposed through the windows. It’s best to bring a hanky, some hand sanitizers or some wet wipes. It’s also important since the safaris often end with a meal back at camp.

Don’t wear clothes that you absolutely wouldn’t want to get stained, too. If you’re bringing a good camera with you (as you’re well-advised to), bring something to protect it from the elements.

5. Bring water

This is very important, as even when you’re not on a safari tour you’re still in danger of being dehydrated, especially if you’re not accustomed to the heat that comes with the humidity. During the trips themselves, you will be exposed to the sun for hours so make sure you have enough to drink.

6. Bring some cash

While most safari companies will provide you with a breakfast/snack, chai, and water, you might also stop to where you have the opportunity to by some souvenirs and snacks. You also need a little cash to tip your local guide/national park guide at the end of the safari (2-300 RS per person is appropriate).

7. Your passport

Do NOT forget your passport! Most National Parks require your passport to verify your reservation and if you forget yours, you won’t be allowed into the park. This is more important than your camera!

8. Your camera

Yes, I know your cell phone has a camera, but if you want some great shots of the wildlife, you need to bring a good camera and lenses.

What to See on an Indian Safari

Leopards and tigers.

Each Indian safari destination has a different main attraction. Most people who take these tours come for the true king of jungle animals, the tiger.

Seeing these magnificent creatures in person, in their natural habitat, is an experience that could never be replicated by zoos or even the best documentaries! But the tiger is extremely elusive, and not all safari guides can find them all the time.

In their lieu, there are other wonderful creatures to see if you keep your eyes peeled. The leopard, the ghost of the jungle, can even be more elusive than the tiger and maybe even more elegant than his bigger cousin.

Tiger walking through tall grass - Tiger Safari India

There are also rare species of deers, such as the very common spotted deer and the rare Barasingha, and the large Sambar deer.

Always entertaining are the langurs, macaques, and various species of monkeys as they jump from tree to tree.

There are also wild boars, huge Gaur (the Indian bison), jackals, and wild dogs (which can be seen even outside safari tours). Depending on the region, where you do your Safari in India, you might also spot elephants or rhinoceros.

Large Gaur bull - Indian Bison with horns on Safari in India

India is home to a wide variety of birds and the naturalists going with you on safari will help you spot them, as they are quite elusive for the untrained eye.

There are over 1260 bird species to be found, many of the endemic to the Indian subcontinent. Many of those birds are part of the Paradise bird family and are absolutely stunning, but quite rare. More common is the national bird of India – the peacock.

indian safari dress

That’s not even counting the magnificent flora of the subcontinent. Safari rides are done with trained naturalists, and they’re very keen to point out the names of every tall tree or bright flower that you see.

Indian Safari Tips

The safari is a luxury trip on its own. Sans the posh trimmings, though, you are given what the very best of unadulterated nature has to offer! Here are some tips to making the safari even more of a blast.

1. Stay quiet

It’s a pain to see that some guides and naturalists speak so loud during these safari tours, when their ears are their greatest assets when finding the elusive jungle animals. Animals typically have distinct alarm calls, and when the guides hear this they can be used to locate the direction of the big cats.

During our safari, we were taught to be as quiet as possible especially during the times we were waiting for the tigers and leopards to show themselves.

Group of 30+ Indian Spotted Deer in a foggy forest in Kanha National Park

2. Stay curious

Many safari tourists have eyes just for the big cats and go home disappointed when they don’t show themselves. This causes them to miss the real magic of the trip! Keep an open mind and observe your environment.

Your naturalist guide will be heralding you with mesmerizing nature stories, and on the safari jeeps or canter buses, you can see these stories unfolding in a panorama right before your eyes.

3. Stay put

Your guides will be giving you important rules and reminders from the moment you set foot in the lodges. These are not just meant to facilitate the smooth operation of the camps but are also meant for your safety.

Out there, there are no leashes or fences. You are in the animals’ territory. That’s what gives everything such a raw and exhilarating feel! While these safaris are perfectly safe, it can’t hurt to watch your own back by following the jungle rules.

Grey Langur Monkey with baby

4. Get up early

Frequent travelers know that being early is a virtue, and it’s a supreme one for safari trips! Book early, since the number of vehicles is limited. Wake up early because entering the jungle as early as possible gives you the best chances of getting good sightings.

5. Use a Safari Company that works sustainably

Pick a safari company that puts the animal first. Read reviews on how ethical they are. If you read that tourists were disappointed, because the guides “wouldn’t get closer” or similar things, take that as a good sign. I have been invited by a few safaris in Madhya Pradesh with Pugdundee Safaris, and for them, sustainability is much more important than a quick buck. Also, take a look at how gorgeous their luxury safari lodges are.

Kanha Earth Lodge Lobby - Pugdundee Safaris India

These are pretty simple tips , but trust me, they can take your Indian safari experience to the next level! But the most important tip, of course, is to enjoy and savor every moment you spend in the jungles of the Indian subcontinent.

Safari Suit shop

INTRODUCTION

Safari Suit, also referred to as Leisure Suit is a perfect choice for the sartorial folk or for those who feel colorful hues aren’t for them. It serves as a slightly more refined alternative if you’re looking for subtle discrete tones or planning to go neutral this season. Myths surrounding Safari Suits include, that they are representations of the disco culture or former status symbols of the elite and professional, or that they are fashion statement suits worn only till the 1970’s for cross country expeditions. But, are these true? Well, we got to dig a little deeper to unravel the mystery.

Safari Suit had its heydays in late 60’s and 70’s and was popularly associated with the British Colonial rule. It goes without mentioning, actor Roger Moore popularized them in his James Bond movies like The Man with the Golden Gun, Moonraker and Octopussy. These coveted looks in the Golden Era, have made a comeback, albeit in a new avatar. The practicality of Safari Suit , combined with its versatile and unfussy nature gives a distinguished look. This suit is not only economical, but works in a formal setting, as well as out of the workplace.

FASHION COMEBACK

Safari suit has made a great comeback for men who want to opt for subtle choices and prefers to go for neutral earthy shades and neutral styling. Even though the latest fashion magazines would suggest you wearing colorful prints and patterns. Even though, the concept of men’s safari jacket though is traditionally considered to have been emerged in the deepest villages of Africa where donning this desert suit is considered synonymous to being a man who is full of pride, is athletic and is full of adventure, in popular understanding safari suit for men is considered to be a sartorial fashion of the British.

CONTEMPORARY DESGINS

1. The fabric : Natural fabrics like cotton, linen and wool are good options for making a safari suit. Overall fall, drape and the feel of these fabrics work very well with the extremely functional designing of the safari suit. 2. The functionality: Utilitarian pockets are given in the safari clothes for men for practical purposes and styling can be enhanced by adding hunters’ loops, flared lapels and fancier buttons.

What to Wear on Safari

When many of us travelers think “Africa”, we think “safari”! Africa is a massive continent (yes, you can indeed fit the USA, China, India, and all of Europe inside - scope out this map !), and so there are all kinds of ways to experience this land that stretches from Algeria to South Africa. But the iconic adventure endures in the safari, a journey of nature and culture that typically takes place in a handful of Africa’s countries.

The classic safari countries like Kenya and South Africa, as well as the specific sites like the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater on Tanzania safari tours ,are amazing to say the least. But, so are countries newer to the safari industry, like Zambia, Botswana and Namibia . But what to take clothing-wise on trips like this is an enduring question that all safari-goers could use some guidance on. Let’s dive into what to wear on safari!

The term “safari” is from the Swahili language, meaning “journey”. Don’t be surprised if locals ask how your safari is going before you hop in your jeep to head out to the savannas, as it can just mean “how is your trip?”

Tanzania Safari

Our What To Pack For Your Trip Guide is a great place to start when it comes to a bird’s eye view of what great gear to be sure to bring on your trip. However, what to wear on African safari tours calls for a few more specific considerations. Our guide shares everything from luggage to personal care to food and hydration - all kinds of travel and safari gear - and covers clothing as well. But the somewhat specific environments that safaris take place in definitely deserve some extra attention.

What To Wear On a Safari

Whatever kind of trip you are going on, the clothing you bring with you should be multipurpose, comfortable, durable, “easy care”, and appropriate for the settings you’ll be in. Your clothing should be constructed in such a way that they serve well in a variety of settings, from adventure to a night on the town in a variety of weather conditions. It should be able to withstand the stresses of the road, easy to hand wash when needed between activities, and both styled in a way that fits your tastes as well as the local culture.

The materials and features of clothing best taken on safari are:

  • Earth tone colors to blend with the surrounding natural environment
  • Having some stretch. flex and breathability to make sitting in the game drive jeeps as comfortable as possible
  • Combinable in a number of outfits that will be adaptable to the highly varying temperature swings (cool-to-cold mornings, hot days, cool evenings) that the desert and savannas where safaris usually take place. ALWAYS study the climate and weather that your destination country will feature carefully before you travel!

A larger number of lighter weight garments that can be worn in layers, added or removed to fit changing weather, are better than fewer, heavier garments that offer fewer choices for outfit combos.

Download Packing Guide

While out in the remote, breathtakingly beautiful natural areas where safaris take place, it’s important to be ready for anything save for an ice storm! As stated above, the temperatures in the far inland of sub-Saharan Africa go from quite cool to notably hot on a daily basis, and can be hit with rain as well. This calls for a well selected wardrobe, as we’ll describe below.

Safari Clothing

Travel clothing, including the best to take on safari, can be understood using seven categories:

  • Base Layers
  • Casual Wear
  • Semi-Formal Wear
  • Insulation Layers
  • Hand/Headwear

Having a set of safari attire that covers these bases will set you up to have a safe and comfortable trip to remember forever! Let’s look at some examples of each of these categories.

This layer (a.k.a. underwear) is essential for comfort, day or night. Lightweight, synthetic and breathable undergarments, both “regular” cuts for the day, and some lightweight long bottoms and a top for nights or cool days, are essential.

Having a tee shirt and pair of shorts is of course a standard casual outfit, good for relaxation between game drives. Having the ability to give your arms and legs some room to breathe on the hottest days can be great, but be careful of the low-latitude sun! This comfy safari wear is best for use around camp - see the note below this list for important info on proper dress code while on safari.

  • Semi-formal Wear

Much travel clothing can be dressed up or down with their stylish cuts and neutral colors. Long pants are the way to go most days for protection from the elements and brush if you’re out on a walking safari, and most long-sleeved travel shirts have a collar and can look nice at the lodge dinner table or our on the town before or after your safari.

Having a light- to medium-weight fleece jacket with you is a must. Fleece can be substituted by a synthetic or down fill jacket - go for one with a hood if possible.

Having a lightweight, waterproof-breathable shell jacket to cut the wind and keep rain off is critical. This jacket will likely not be needed, but when it is, it’s priceless for your comfort and safety. You’ll pretty much always be within easy retreat to the safari jeep or camp lodging, but this is still an important garment for the traveler no matter what trip they’re on.

  • Hand- and Headwear

Some travelers who have cold-sensitive hands like to have a medium-weight set of gloves, and both a wide-brimmed sun hat and a beanie are good to have.

A sturdy set of trail shoes or lightweight hiking boots are the call for footwear, as is a pair of sandals (heel strap is a good idea) for wearing around the camp.

Botswana Safari

One important factor to keep in mind is that your safari will be taking you to remote African communities where most peoples will be conservative and traditional. Wearing a modest and unobtrusive safari outfit is important to ensure you are being respectful of the locals and setting yourself up for good intercultural relations. Also be sure to bring a selection of clothing that will keep you prepared changing weather and daily temperature swings. You’ll want to bring these items with you everyday when the jeep leaves camp - you will be altering your outfit throughout the day as nature brings its changes in temperature, sunshine and precipitation.

African safari clothing is an important part of the larger packing list of gear that should come with you to Africa. See our packing guide ,as well as another blog post detailing what to bring on your safari. Getting educated about the right clothes for safari is just one more step to check off your list before you start planning with our Travel Specialists and make your trip to Africa a reality!

Indian safari the 6 faces of india, rediscovering india the diversity of indian safari.

Indian safari has returned, and the country that has amazed explorers for centuries is welcoming travellers back to its diverse and resplendent landscapes.

Historically fascinating, naturally abundant and culturally captivating, this vast and multi-faceted land has so much to offer every flavour of traveller. From verdant tropical islands to bustling blue cities, profound religious festivals to exhilarating tiger tracking, calm waterways to arid desert regions, India is a country of many faces, invariably beaming at you with unprecedented warmth and hospitality.

Indian Safari

Exploring the dichotomy of India’s landscapes and experiences, these six perspectives are by no means comprehensive, but offer a tantalising amuse bouche to India’s rich and extensive menu.

THE ICONIC INDIAN SAFARI

The region of Rajasthan was, for many years, the centre of regal safaris and tiger hunting. Elephant would be ridden through the jungle, vulnerable to the ferocity of the threatened big cats, while Rajas perched safely atop their beasts of burden.

Thankfully, these are scenes that have disappeared in time like dust in the wind, and the only shooting of tigers nowadays is done with cameras, the preservation of the world’s biggest of big cats now far more precious than the cost of their pelts. The royal elegance, however, remains, and the exceptional opulence of India’s erstwhile royalty can be enjoyed by visitors from around the world.

Staying at one of Rajasthan’s decadent palaces may seem like the best way to invoke the lifestyle of princes and princesses past, but an Indian safari camp reaches unparalleled echelons of luxury. Sweeping white canopies emulate the tent designs of generations past, staff cater to your every need, cuisine is served upon the finest china coupled with gleaming gold cutlery and elegant champagne flutes, and no effort is spared in the pursuit of absolute luxurious perfection.

Indian safari

They say the lion is King of the Jungle, but when looking upon the much larger, more powerful and spectacularly patterned Bengal tiger, one must consider a zoological coup d’état, a feline usurping, for the tiger is truly king of all he surveys.

As you wend through the dry grasses and dappled woodlands of the region, it is little wonder tigers have developed their distinctive colouring, and every pool of shadow or tussock of grass will make your heart leap in wishful hope that the striped scenery contains your quarry.

Colonial elegance remains in abundance. Your attendees dress in crisp, traditional linen, your sundowners served in crystal tumblers from antique leather portmanteau. Contemporary dwellings and modern properties can offer five-star luxury, but on an Indian Safari, you can truly and quite literally live like a king or queen.

The Serai1

SRI LANKA, FROM RIVER TO ROCK

A Mecca for surfers, a haven for hippies and a muse for creatives, Sri Lanka is as numerously enjoyed as the Indian mainland.

The fascinating waterways of Negombo and the 400-year-old Galle Fort offer an aquatic connection to this fascinating island, not to mention the exquisite beaches of Arugam Bay. Fishing is an integral part of life in Sri Lanka, and the fascinating stilt fishermen found in the Galle region are truly an incredible sight to behold.

Stilt Fishermen, Sri Lanka

While other areas of the Indian mainland, such as Kerala, incorporate seafood into their cuisine, Sri Lanka is particularly renowned for it, infusing classic Indian spices with local fish and fresher, zesty flavours particular to the island culture, especially cinnamon, for which it has been known since the time of the ancient Egyptians.

Spanning over 25,000 square miles – about the size of West Virginia – Sri Lanka is ripe for exploration, from its centuries-old Portuguese heritage to the millennia-old history of Indian Rajas a profound spiritual devotion. The World Heritage Site of Sigiriya is of particular significance. Rising from the forest floor, this mighty monolith is a peculiarity of the landscape, but this geological anomaly has another secret. Over 1,500 years ago, King Kashyapa decided to build a fortress city on its summit, where many ruins, and even elaborate frescos, can be found to this day.

Indian safari

Yala National Park provides a stunning safari experience, with the elephant so emblematic of the island nation in abundance. Here too, you will find leopard, Macaque monkeys, spotted deers, crocodiles, monitor lizards, sloth bear, wild boars and a cornucopia of birdlife.

The Blue Train, which runs through the spectacular mountainous countryside between Ella and Kandy is also a superb experience, yet despite the renown of their cyan siblings, it is the red trains that will provide a truly memorable journey. Weaving across a scenic network of routes, the red trains are of a more classic design, and even the staff wear more traditional uniforms. From the hill passes of the interior to the stunning shoreline of Galle, the journey of three or four hours will leave you breathless.

Sri Lanka Blue Train

THE CUISINE & CULTURE OF KERALA

Kerala is a singularly spectacular destination, however you experience it. Known as God’s Own Country, it isn’t hard to understand why, and National Geographic Traveler has notably declared it one of the world’s ten paradises. With a history of over 7,000 years, Kerala – on the south-western coast of India – has many fascinating destinations, with a culture that equally reflects such an extensive past.

The alluring waterways of Alleppey provide captivating cruises and aquatic accommodation, with houseboats handcrafted in the traditional style drifting upon the tranquil canals. Similar to Sri Lanka, this southern Indian destination also has a wonderful range of stunning beaches, and the mineral springs of Varkala have been renowned for centuries for their therapeutic qualities.

Indian safari

Both tea and coffee are grown abundantly in the region, and sampling these celebrated beverages fresh from the plantation is simply unmissable. Kerala is a gastronomist;s delight, and traders have been exporting spices from the area for hundreds of years. Though Indian cuisine is highly distinctive, Kerala has its own flavours, dishes and ingredients that make it both unique and intriguing, spicy yet more suited to a Western palate. Stepping into the kitchen for an afternoon with one of Kerala’s expert chefs reveals the fascinating nuances of the region’s dishes incorporating locally-grown black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and the rich floral vanilla found in numerous delectable desserts.

Kerala is also a wonderful destination for nature. National parks, elephant sanctuaries and expansive forests allow visitors to enjoy Kerala’s fauna and help to protect and preserve endangered species.

This enchanting combination of cuisine, culture and nature makes Kerala an essential destination to add to your India safari itinerary,

INTO THE MOUNTAINS

Though tigers are definitively the big cat of India, the snow leopard – dubbed the ghost cat of the Himalayas – is possibly the most revered and precious sight. An Indian safari through the foothills of Ladakh in search of these profoundly elusive creatures is the journey of a lifetime, despite there being little guarantee of observing the timid ghost cat.

Snow Leopard, Ladakh

Hemis National Park is recognised as one of the best places for the opportunity of seeing snow leopard, but this is no average Indian safari. The park’s elevation requires altitude acclimatisation and, as the cat’s name suggests, the snowy hills present a challenging terrain. While it is the primary purpose for many travellers, spotting a snow leopard is not the only reason to visit Ladakh and, owing to the cat’s exceptional timidness, camouflage and rarity, nor should it be. The incredible mountainscapes, ancient temples, villages and vistas are, in their own right, equally as breathtaking and reason enough to visit this exceptional outpost of India.Treks reveal spotted ibex, wolf, blue sheep, Tibetan hares, and vibrant migratory birds that call Hemis National Park home at various times of the year.

View of Tibetan Hemis Monastery Ladakh, Jammu And Kashmir ,india

Though your ultimate quest isn’t assured, with the right guide, enough time and a lot of patience, you may well be fortunate enough to spot a ghost cat in person, padding gently through the soft snow, its thick, patterned coat blending superbly with the dappled, rock-strewn landscape. Diligently protected, word of a snow leopard sighting on the surrounding mountains travels quickly, and the network of well-connected guides shares the news to provide opportunity for guests to witness the snow leopard as well as allow rangers to ensure its health and safety.

Though cold, challenging and potentially a fruitless journey, trekking through Ladakh in search of the ghost cat is absolutely unequalled, and at the very pinnacle of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

RELIGION & CULTURE

While an Indian safari may be considered the pursuits and observation of wildlife, a cultural safari is an unmissable element of a visit to this marvellous nation.

India is a country of powerful sensory experiences, from the spices and flavours to the song and dance and almost overwhelming vibrancy and colour. So much of life is a celebration in India and nothing is done by half. Strangers are welcomed into weddings, meals are a profoundly communal affair, and the jubilation in every occasion is palpable.

Holi

This is rarely more true than with India’s, possibly the world’s, most famous mausoleum, the Taj Mahal. Often thought of as a temple, the Taj Mahal is, in fact, an opulent tribute to the life and memory of Mumtaz Mahal, third wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Of course, the Taj Mahal is far from a unique or exclusive destination, but taking a sunset drink in the stunning park on the opposite bank of the Yamuna river is an experience only available to the elite few.

Religion is integral to daily life in India. Whether it is the powerful connection to the Ganga River, the vibrant, colourful celebration of Holi in honour of the victory of good over evil, or the fascinating swamis of Varanasi, India has a way of moving even the least religious of visitors.

Varanasi, India

Donning white linen garments, taking to the streets and revelling with the masses in the extensive plumes of coloured chalk dust of Holi is an incomparable experience, and one that often dictates the timing of travellers’ visits.

HISTORY THROUGH ARCHITECTURE

We have already mentioned the Taj Mahal – arguably India’s most recognised architectural monument – but the nation has a significant history of impressive architecture dating back well over 1,000 years.

The stepwells of Rajasthan have quenched the thirst of many generations and staved off even the hardest of droughts, giving life throughout the region, and across much of India. Spectacularly crafted, sometimes incredibly ornate, these multi-tiered structures are used to this day as never-ending water sources, and attract visitors from around the world.

Indian safari

Constructed in the mid-18th century, the Taj Lake Palace, a glistening jewel appearing to float on the tranquil surface of Lake Pichola in Udaipur, is probably best known in the modern western world as the magnificent haunt of James Bond’s paramour, Octopussy, in the movie of the same name.

Now a luxurious hotel, it is a simply divine venue that transports you into bygone days and allows you to live the life of a Raja or Ranee in impeccable style and class.

Taj Lake Palace

Overlooked by the equally impressive Mehrangarh Fort, the Blue City of Jodhpur is an essential destination for any Indian traveller. The city itself is wonderfully traditional, and wandering the narrow laneways and exploring the marketplaces is reward in itself. The fort, too, is a breathtaking feat of 15th-Century architecture and worthy of a half-day’s exploration. But it is the blue-washed buildings of the old town that Jodhpur has become most recognised. In an Indian reflection of Morocco’s Chefchaouen, a portion of Jodhpur’s city is swathed in sky-blue paint, ornate religious paintings adorning the azure walls, making for fascinating strolls and spectacular photos.

Indian Safari

Wherever you look in India, there is an architectural example that will stop you in your tracks, whether in its resplendent majesty, its feat of human toil or, as with the Blue City, simply in its absolute uniqueness.

To define India in just six facets is to not do the wonderfully diverse, exciting and enthralling nation justice in any regard, but this handful of suggestions will, if nothing else, hopefully pique your curiosity and reflect the viability of India as the most magically varied vacation destination, from remote luxury safari to tropical coast and ornate palace.

Introduction

Your long-awaited safari adventure is finally here! But amidst the excitement, a question niggles at the back of your mind: “What should I wear on safari?” Fear not, this guide will unveil the secrets to conquering the savanna (or any other safari destination) in style and comfort.

Whether traversing the African savanna, exploring Indian jungles, or braving polar expeditions, it’s clear that careful consideration of clothing and gear can greatly enhance comfort and enjoyment.

Packing for Paradise: Essential Considerations

Before diving into specific destinations, let’s explore some key factors to consider when assembling your safari wardrobe:

  • Climate:  This is paramount. Research your destination’s average temperatures, rainfall patterns, and potential for chilly mornings or evenings.
  • Activities:  Will you be primarily on game drives, participating in walking safaris, or enjoying boat excursions? Activities can influence your clothing choices.
  • Terrain:  Dusty environments or encounters with prickly bushes might necessitate sturdy footwear and protective clothing.
  • Respecting the Environment:  Opt for neutral tones that blend with the natural surroundings to minimize disturbing wildlife.

Must-Haves for Every Safari

Here are some essential items to pack, regardless of your safari destination:

  • Neutral-colored, breathable clothing:  Khaki, beige, olive green, and earthy tones are ideal. Opt for natural fabrics like cotton or linen that allow airflow in hot climates.
  • Sun protection:  A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses (polarized lenses are great for reducing glare), and UV-protective clothing are essential.
  • Convertible safari pants:  These pants often zip off at the knee to transform into shorts, offering versatility for changing temperatures.
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes:  Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial for uneven terrain.
  • Quick-drying layers:  A light sweater or fleece can be handy for early mornings or cooler evenings.
  • Refillable water bottle:  Staying hydrated is vital, especially in hot climates. Consider an insulated bottle to keep water cool.

Dressing for Diverse Destinations:

Now, let’s explore some specific destinations and their unique attire considerations:

  • African Safaris: Pack for warm days and potentially cool nights. Consider a safari shirt or light jacket for evenings.
  • Indian Jungles: Long, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen is ideal for hot, humid climates. Opt for clothes that cover your arms and legs to protect against insects and thorns.
  • Polar Expeditions: Layer up! Thermal underwear, fleece jackets, waterproof pants, and a warm parka are essential for frigid temperatures. Don’t forget insulated boots and gloves.

Beyond the Basics: Adding Flair to Your Safari Look

While practicality is key, you can still inject some personality into your safari attire:

  • Scarves:  A versatile accessory for sun protection, warmth, or a touch of color.
  • Safari hat:  A classic wide-brimmed hat not only protects you from the sun but also adds a touch of safari chic.
  • Binoculars:  A must-have for any wildlife enthusiast! Consider a comfortable neck strap for easy carrying.

Remember, the goal is to feel comfortable, confident, and prepared to embrace the adventure that awaits!

Bonus Tip: Pack a small backpack for carrying essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera, and your binoculars during game drives.
