The RPF bans visitors entry to Dudhsagar waterfalls, tourists upset

HUBBALLI: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has put a ban on the entry of tourists to scenic Dudhsagar waterfalls located on the borders of Karnataka and Goa. The waterfalls that is located about 15 km from Castle Rock railway station in Uttara Kannada district attract large numbers of visitors from throughout the country during the monsoon season when the cascades return to its fullest glory.

But due to the rush of tourists on the sensitive Ghats which are only accessible through the railway line, the RPF is having a tough time controlling the influx of tourists during this monsoon. A squad of RPF is now sending back the tourists in the same train towards Goa and not allowing them to get down at the Dudhsagar station. Last weekend, nearly 400 people who had come from different parts of the state were made to board the train and sent to Goa.

In the last few years, with the increase in the numbers of tourists, there have been incidents of life loss, damage to railway properties and hurdles in train driving due to trekkers. The region has also witnessed landslides for the last few years and the security agencies are in no mood to take any chance with the tourists.

"The place is not accessible to the public. Any kind of entry is illegal. As of now we are warning people and sending them back from the Dudhsagar railway station. In future, we are planning to take legal action by booking cases under trespassing and other offenses. Most of the time the large group of students and youngsters come here putting themselves at risk," pointed out an RPF official.

"The Castle Rock and Dudhsagar areas are often on red alert during the monsoons. The RPF officials are now making regular announcements at Castle Rock railway stations that no tourists will be allowed to alight at the Dudhsagar railway station," the official added.

The tour organisers however demanded that the state government must make plans to encourage monsoon tourism in this sector. "The Castle Rock railway station has its own history and the Dudhsagar waterfalls is best viewed during the monsoon. Control tourism set up can be floated to help those who come during the monsoon months," suggested a tour operator from Dandeli.

Viral videos from Dudhsagar Falls show why Goa govt banned all tourists

To ensure public safety and prevent drowning incidents, the Goa Forest Department and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have enforced a ban on visitors accessing the Dudhsagar Waterfalls in Goa.

According to a Twitter video, trekkers and tourists attempting to reach the falls by walking along the railway tracks have been stopped, and railway authorities have issued warnings against such activities.

Another viral surfaced video on social media depicts a sizeable gathering of trekkers who are subjected to sit-ups for attempting to trek along the Konkan railway line. Although the exact location of the incident remains unverified, the surrounding scenery visible in the video suggests it took place somewhere within the Western Ghats.

Why the ban?

The surge in tourist influx at the waterfalls can be attributed to vacationers seeking a monsoon retreat during the previous weekend.

  • The ban came after recent fatalities and heavy rainfall, which led to the closure of roads leading to the waterfalls.
  • Despite the absence of official permissions for trekking activities this season, certain individuals persisted in trekking illegally, disregarding the regulations.
  • Previously, this month there had been several reports of drowning in the lakes and waterfalls of Goa. Many other accidents including landslides and flash floods, have also from the state.

  • In order to prevent and mitigate any such incidents, the authorities banned trekking and visiting waterfalls, lakes, canyons, open mines etc, owing to the accessibility and remoteness of these locations.
  • Many trekkers said they were unaware of the ban enforced.

Consequently, there had been demands from the government and forest department to implement stricter regulations for accessing wildlife sanctuaries, particularly on weekends. The objective is to strike a harmonious balance between enabling visitors to appreciate the natural splendour and ensuring their safety throughout the monsoon season.

Trekkers unabated despite the ban

Despite the ban, hundreds of tourists were spotted walking along the railway tracks near the picturesque Dudhsagar waterfalls. They were en route to the falls as some roads had been closed due to heavy rain.

The forest department in Goa has prohibited visitors from accessing waterfalls within wildlife sanctuaries due to heavy rainfall and a series of drowning incidents. The ban, effective from July 11, aimed to prioritise public safety and prevent accidents.

Railways warn again

After the incident, the South Western Railway warned travellers, urging them not to walk along or on the railway tracks. According to the railways, such activities pose risks to personal safety and are considered offences under Sections 147 and 159 of the Railway Act. The railway authorities stressed that de-boarding at Dudhsagar or any other station along the Braganza Ghat is strictly prohibited.

Hundreds denied entry to Goa’s Dudhsagar falls, railways cites track safety

Videos emerged on social media showing hundreds of tourists being turned around by the rpf, the goa forest guards and goa police, deployed in a bid to control the crowds.

The railway authorities have warned travellers, tourists and passengers against alighting from trains and walking along tracks to visit Goa’s picturesque Dudhsagar waterfalls – which is at its glorious best during the monsoons – after hundreds of tourists and trekkers who sought to visit the falls, were stopped from doing so by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), citing a ban during the rainy season.

Videos emerged on social media showing hundreds of tourists being turned around by the RPF, the Goa Forest Guards and Goa Police, deployed in a bid to control the crowds.

“We urge you to savour the beauty of Dudhsagar Falls from WITHIN your coach. Walking on/along tracks not only endangers your own safety but is also an offence under Section 147, 159 of Railway Act. It can also endanger the safety of trains. De-boarding at Dudhsagar or any other station along the Braganza Ghat is prohibited. All passengers are requested to cooperate & follow rules laid down for your own safety,” the South Western Railway said via their official Twitter handle.

With the road routes to the falls shuttered by the Goa Forest Department fearing flash floods and swollen streams along the route, trekkers and tourists opt for trains passing along the route – the Nizamuddin – Vasco da Gama Goa Express and the Yesvantpur – Vasco da Gama Express – both trains which traverse the route daily.

On Sunday, visitors from both directions – the Karnataka side and from the Collem station in Goa attempted to walk to the Dudhsagar Falls via the tracks but were stopped by the police.

“We were told that there were deaths and so entry to the waterfalls is banned. The government needs to put measures in place so that everyone can enjoy the falls and not disappoint the tourists who have come from very far to witness it,” said a visitor who was told to return.

The Goa forest department has banned the entry of revellers, picnickers and the general public at waterfalls located within wildlife sanctuaries of the state. The move comes after two persons died at a waterfall in South Goa on Sunday.

During the monsoons, waterfalls in Goa are a huge hit among picnickers and revellers. However, sadly, drownings at waterfalls are an annual occurrence as fast-flowing rivers claim lives on a regular basis.

This year, however, social media was flooded with complaints of overcrowding and misbehaviour at popular waterfalls prompting calls for the government and forest department to regulate entry into the sanctuaries, especially on weekends.

This monsoon trek is so good, it's now illegal: Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Photo of Sushantika

The Dudhsagar Waterfalls in Goa is a four-tiered beauty located in Goa, India. Considered one of India's tallest waterfalls, she's a force to reckon with at a height of about 1000 feet.

The Castle Rock trek involves walking on train tracks and has been banned since 2016 or so when the rules became stricter. You can however research alternate routes which may not involve the train-trek and are through the neighbouring forests. These options offer a more distant view of the falls.

Best experienced during the monsoons when the water is at full force, it's advisable to opt for an experienced guide to ensure you don't get lost along the way. We managed to experience the Castle Rock route in 2015. This route is considered more scenic than others with the trek leading you through multiple tunnels and tiny waterfalls which are enjoyable on its own. The trek window is typically in July-August each year and typically unavailable otherwise.

We reached the Dudhsagar Waterfalls from Bangalore by traveling on the Vasco Da Gama express. This train also halts briefly in front of the falls as people shriek with excitement and the anxious TTs prevent them from jumping on to the train tracks to take selfies with the gorgeous beauty in full force. After our preview of the falls, our excitement to begin the trek grew stronger.

While we stared at the waterfalls at this halt, our guide reminded us to grab a hold of our bags and prepare to jump out of the train. A little confused at first, we hopped out of the train a few stops prior to Castle Rock train stop.

This unknown spot then led us down muddy trails to a make shift camp site which was a roof over our heads - literally it's all it was! As the rain continued to pelt down, we were full of excitement at reaching the waterfalls which we'd already passed by earlier on.

Preparing for a monsoon trek:

I recommend investing in a sturdy pair of trekking shoes because walking on train tracks requires a shoe with a thick sole - most sneakers won't be able to withstand the weekend of walking over tracks in the rain and regular sports shoes will end up hurting your feet.

Additionally, a good rain coat/poncho if you're carrying a bag is essential. You are amidst nature with no access to any shops or resources. Stock up on drinking water, snack bars and only the essentials to avoid feeling weighed down as you make your way to the falls. If you're someone who can't live without luxuries, best stay away from this experience because you're likely to also come across leeches, bugs and more. Odomos, a flashlight, power banks and waterproof covers for your phone/camera is definitely a must-have. I for one didn't bother carrying a phone on this trek and luckily had friends who took lots of beautiful pictures!

The Dudhsagar Waterfalls trek itself is about 12 kilometers long. It was raining continuously which made the experience so much more enjoyable! We set out to keep a sturdy pace as we walked along the tracks, made friends with the other trekkers and introduced ourselves to each other. We even sang songs to keep our pace up as it can get a little daunting with bullets of rain hitting your face, temperatures reducing and the train tracks for your feet to get used to. But as long as you enjoy the great outdoors and have good company, you're great!

You often have friendly train drivers pass by while they sweetly slow down the train as they make time to wave out and wish you the best for the trek ahead. It's a blessing when they slow down as there are narrow turns which you can't overcome no matter how much you try. Your feet tend to get caught in the tracks and with very little or no room on the ground to walk on beside the tracks, this is your only path.

The most beautiful part of the path heading to the waterfalls is walking through the numerous tunnels. This is something else altogether and adds to the mysterious charm of the place. The many waterfalls pouring over the marshy-green surroundings truly become the 'light at the end of the tunnel'.

As you walk along, you get easily lost in the trail. We were rushing to make it to the falls before sunset as staying out in the wilderness at night is unsafe.

You keep mustering on and soon enough you can spot the majestic waterfalls from a distance. This can be deceptive as it appears closer than it actually is.

The surroundings are rather enchanting too. Filled with mist and clouds overshadowing the hills, it results in quite a magical sight.

Photo of This monsoon trek is so good, it's now illegal: Dudhsagar Waterfalls  3/5 by Sushantika

As you inch closer to the waterfalls, you'll hear the roar of the water gushing on! Your heart brims with joy at the thought of reaching it.

Photo of This monsoon trek is so good, it's now illegal: Dudhsagar Waterfalls  4/5 by Sushantika

Once you reach the falls, you're astonished at its sight. All you want to do is stop and stare as you let the white mist hit your face. The treacherous edge of the flimsy barricade keeping you from a deathly fall is easily forgotten when you're standing in front of it. Our guide reminds us that it's time to return back to the camp site and with a heavy heart we leave this beauty.

You make your way back through the beautiful tunnels which led you to this gorgeous location in the first place. But this time, the tunnels seem to look different as the surroundings get more misty and dull. It's a brand new experience once again!

Once you make it back to the camp for the night you realise how tired you are. You try to settle into the night in your sleeping bag with the rain beating down and mosquitoes for company.

The next day, we had an early start and decided to walk back to the Castle Rock train station. This route was again about 13 kilometers. With our bags we were more tired but the thrill of having witnessed the waterfalls first-hand kept our spirits up.

Photo of This monsoon trek is so good, it's now illegal: Dudhsagar Waterfalls  5/5 by Sushantika

The walk was adventurous as we treaded through rivulets and realised that rain coats were pretty much useless at this point. Still it was something we all braced ourselves for and enjoyed it anyway. Sometimes screaming about stepping on an animal in the river too. Your trekking shoes will help you make it through the river bank with the many twigs, critters and stones that are sharp from the river's turns threatening to cut your feet.

We eventually made it to Castle Rock where we patiently waited for the train to arrive as we chatted along about the trek. It was still something that we didn't fathom - did we really spend a night in the wilderness, with nothing around us and walk about 26 kilometers for the Dudhsagar waterfalls?

This monsoon trek was amazing in many ways - the beauty of the monsoons, the train tracks and most of all getting to experience this trail with a group of girlfriends made it memorable. The silly moments and the teachings you gain from this experience are priceless and led to some wonderful memories. It may have been a few years since I walked this path but every monsoon, the memory flashes before me as if it were yesterday.

It's always best to check the rules and whether the travel guide is a responsible one before booking a monsoon trek. Typically such experiences also require passes from the forest department. Don't forget to travel responsibly and ensure you don't litter the beautiful route as you trek.

Is this true? Since I really wanted to visit the falls, I enquired with few other trekking agencies and they say that trekking is still available. So I am confused. Please help.

It is illegal and the railway police have been cracking down on illegal guides and hikers as someone got seriously injured a couple of weeks back after being struck by a train.

You do it at your own risk.

Manoj, at your own risk.

Illegal means not legal which means banned, suffer the consequences if you wish to go ahead with the trek

I went a few years ago in March and the water fall wasn't very powerful compared to the pictures I have seen in monsoon season.

Many tourists and trekkers used to visit Dudhsagar waterfall during weekends.

Panaji: The Goa government on Saturday issued an order banning the entry of tourists, trekkers and all persons to the picturesque Dudhsagar waterfall in South Goa, which is located on Goa-Karnataka border.

A. Asvin Chandru, South Goa Collector, in the order has stated “Visitors shall be allowed to enter the Base of the Dudhsagar waterfall area through the prescribed routes only with permit / tickets purchased from designated entry points by Forest Department,”

MS Education Academy

“There shall be a complete ban for the entry of tourists, trekkers and all other persons to the Dudhsagar waterfall (at or near the railway bridge/ Dudhsagar railway station) either by trekking/ by train/ walking along the track as it is not a designated tourist point except for authorised personnel of Police, Railways, Forest department and other Government officials on duty,” order stated.

Last week, when unauthorised visitors allegedly walked on or along railway tracks to visit Dudhsagar waterfall, were caught by authorities and made to do ‘sit-ups’ while holding their ears.

According to the order, there have been incidents of drowning and missing tourists visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls and during attempts at trekking along the railway track and other routes in the past, especially during monsoon season.

The government has also taken steps to restrict entry of any unauthorised persons towards the waterfall area by establishing check posts. Dudhsagar shot to fame in 2013, after it was portrayed in ‘Chennai Express’, a Bollywood film, starring Shah Rukh Khan.

5 Different Routes To Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall

1. jeep safari from kulem.

Best time: Post-monsoon (October to May)

Foot of the waterfall during summer where you can take a dip

The most ideal way for large groups with family and kids to visit this place is to opt for a Jeep Safari at Kulem, which is organized by the Goa Forest Department from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. A maximum of 7 adults is allowed in each jeep which costs you Rs. 2800 for a single journey (which may vary depending on the season). Rs. 30 will be collected for the lifejacket and an entry fee of Rs. 50 for entering Bhagwan Mahavir National Park. Rs. 30 is charged for a still camera and Rs. 250 for a professional camera.

The jeep will drop you close to the foot of the waterfall. It’s just a 1 Km walk from here. You can swim in the water pool for around 60-90 minutes and then return to the jeep.

Online booking of tickets for Dudhsagar Falls is now available. For details, check Goa Tourism to skip the queue during peak season.

Note: Jeep safari is not available during the rainy and monsoon seasons, as the route is slippery/muddy. It may resume in October depending on the rains.

2. From Castle Rock Railway Station, Karnataka

Best time: Monsoon (Mid July to October)

The most popular trekking route to the waterfall leads you to the railway track or the middle bridge which is in-between the waterfall. It is a 14 Km trek that takes around 5-6 hours one way. It has the most picturesque views of the Western Ghats and valleys with approximately 11 instagrammable tunnels. Be very careful while walking in those tunnels as trains may pass any time.

Instagrammable tunnels during the trek

After crossing the 13 th tunnel, there is a viewpoint of the Dudhsagar waterfall. We can’t say this enough but the view from here left us mesmerized and we just couldn’t get enough of it.

You will not be able to go to the bottom tier of the waterfall through this route.

Note: The Castle Rock trekking route is permanently closed due to mishaps and tragic incidents in recent years. One will be heavily fined by the railway police and is forced to go back if found trekking on this railway route.

3. From Kulem Railway Station, Goa

Side view of the top waterfall amidst greenness

The official trekking route is the Kulem- Dudhsagar route which is 11 km one way and takes approximately 3-4 hours. We trekked through this route. You need a compulsory guide to trek through this route.

Human bridge made by joining hands to cross water streams

This trek takes you to the bottom tier of the waterfall where you can click pictures of trains passing over the middle bridge from the front of the waterfall. Start as early as possible from the trek starting point, Kulem. Wear life jackets and start trekking to catch the sun’s golden light reflected from the tracks. Halfway along the route, you have to go down from the railroad to the jeep road. This road is closed for Jeeps during monsoon.

Alternatively, you can also walk to Sonaulim station to save 2 km on the mud route and cross the only tunnel in this trek route. Along your way, you’ll encounter the wild beauty of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park as you trek through the woods. You can also refill your water bottles while crossing small streams.

Cross bridges along the way and watch the massive flow of dudh from the viewpoint.

Bridge along the way in Kulem route

Beware of monkeys as they take away the munchkins or even bags from you. Start your return journey before 3 PM as the sun sets early during the monsoon.

4. From Kuveshi Village, Karnataka

Best time: Post Monsoon (November to February)

Top view of the waterfall during summer - kuveshi route

This is the most difficult but adventurous route that will lead you to the head and edge of the waterfall from where it plunges down into a pool of water. The trek starts from Kuveshi village which is 10 km from Castle Rock station. Take a cab to the village which has less than 50 families with no electricity and mobile signal. But the locals will guide you. You have to trek through the forest and cross the jungle canopy which is built by the locals about 30 feet high and for a distance of about 240 m. Directions are marked on poles that are quite visible along the route.

Note: You cannot take this route during the monsoon as you will have to cross the Mandovi River which is full and rough in the rains.

5. From Dudhsagar Railway Station, Goa

Best time: Monsoon, Post Monsoon (July- February)

Dudhsagar rail stop is not a station where passengers expect a platform. All trains crossing the waterfall will have a short 1-2-minute unscheduled stop at the Dudhsagar station. Passengers have to get down from the train in that short period. From this rail stop, visitors have to walk a km on the tracks crossing a 200 m dark train tunnel to reach the waterfall. On your way back, either trek or hop on a locomotive train and head off to Kulem or Castle Rock Station, which is not recommended though.

Dudhsagar railway station with no platform

Note: Indian Railways has banned people from getting down the trains at the Dudhsagar station and walking along the rail tracks as it is deemed too risky. During monsoon, railway police stand near the Dudhsagar station to ensure no one gets off the train. So, officially this route is not allowed.

Dudhsagar Falls Name & It's Legends

Dudhsagar Falls Name & It's Legends

Dudhsagar Falls is a four-tiered waterfall which is well-known for its cascading appearance. The term ‘Dudhsagar’ translates to ‘milky white sea’ due to its white sprays and foam.

There is an age-old legend associated with the name of Dudhsagar Falls. Once upon a time, there was a princess who was a popular daughter of the King of Ghats. This lady was both modest and beautiful and believed in the piousness of heart, mind, and soul.

According to the legend, this princess would regularly bathe in a lake located close to her father’s castle.

After bathing, she, along with her handmaidens, would assemble alongside the lake. The princess would consume a whole jug of milk when she was out with her handmaidens. Made of pure gold, the jar was inlaid with some brightly sparkling diamonds.

Once, while she was busy drinking her jug of milk, she came across a young and beautiful prince who trespassed the nearby woods. The moment he heard the laughter of these ladies, he stopped then and there.

The princess was only wrapped in minimal bathing attire. Thus her handmaidens poured the same jug of milk over the hills to produce a cascading effect. It was done to cover the princess, who could then immediately wrap herself in her royal clothes.

This cascading milky appearance, which was believed to guard the modesty of the royal princess, is today considered the legend of Dudhsagar Falls.

In the last few years, the Dudhsagar waterfalls have become a popular weekend destination, especially for those travelling from cities like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore (all thanks to a certain Bollywood movie). Most tourists to Goa these days make the Dudhsagar waterfalls a part of their itinerary for Goa.

Because they are so huge, there are a number of ways to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls. They can also be visited from different location via different routes. All of these options can make planning a trip to the Dudhsagar waterfalls really confusing. If you’ve got just a weekend, you can’t afford to lose a day in a messed up travel plan. We hear you!

This guide to the Dudhsagar waterfalls will break down all your options for a visit to these waterfalls. This guide covers trekking to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, as well as doing the jeep safari, on a self-planned trip or a package group tour. This guide will help you plan any kind of visit to Dudhsagar waterfalls.

But first up, the thunderous cascading star of the visit – the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

A picture speaks a thousand words. But even a thousand pictures fall short of what hit us when we first laid our eyes on these Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Dudhsagar waterfall on the border of Goa and Karnataka in India are four tiered waterfalls resembling a cascading fall of milk.

We have visited the Dudhsagar waterfalls twice:

  • By trekking over the railway tracks independently, in the monsoon
  • By taking a jeep safari tour to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

In this guide, we will address all the issues we faced while visiting these waterfalls.

There are three different ways of visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls:

  • Trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – most popular in the monsoon months (June to September). Jump directly to this part .
  • Jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – starts post-monsoon (typically operates from October end to May). Jeep safaris for 2019 have already started. Jump directly to this part .
  • A third not so popular way of visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls – for seasoned trekkers.

Where are the Dudhsagar waterfalls located?

The Dudhsagar waterfalls ( Dudh : milk, Sagar : sea) are located on the Goa-Karnataka border. They are part of the Western Ghats – a mountain range in Southwest India.

It is a four-tiered waterfall with different ways to reach each level. The mountains from which the Dudhsagar waterfalls emerge are in Karnataka and the forest in which they fall is in Goa.

The base of these waterfalls is in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in the Mollem district of South Goa. It is a lush green sanctuary, characteristic to the forests of the Western Ghats.

Watch out: The station just before Kulem is Kalem. The names look and sound familiar. We have seen travellers mix up Kulem and Kalem . Do not get off the train at Kalem. Kulem is the last station for the passenger train.
  • The direct trains from Bangalore to Castle Rock ( Yesvantpur Vasco da Gama Express / Velankanni Vasco da Gama Express / Chennai Central Vasco da Gama Weekly) do not run daily.
  • There are several trains from Bangalore to Londa Junction and take a connecting train from Londa to Castle Rock . You can also take a taxi from Londa. The distance of Londa to Castle Rock is around 30 km.

Your mode of transport primarily depends on whether you want to trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls or take the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls

  • In Goa, your trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls will start by climbing up the railway tracks from Kulem. You will climb up the Braganza ghat, crossing several tunnels and reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The trekking distance from Kulem to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is 11 km . It is a slightly uphill walk.
  • If you start in Karnataka, you will trek over the railway tracks from Castle Rock. The trekking distance from Castle Rock to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is roughly 14 km .
  • You can get off the Amravati Express at Sonalium which is an unscheduled stop. At Sonalium, you will have to climb down the ladder and jump off the train. There is no platform here. From Sonalium you have to walk roughly 3 km to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls .

Tunnels on the railway tracks on the way to the Ddudhsagar waterfalls

Start of the trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls

It’s fun walking through this section of the railway tracks in the middle of the forest through numerous tunnels. But you have to be mindful the whole while to the sound of approaching trains. By trekking over the railway tracks, you reach the middle tier of the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

The railway tracks trace a horseshoe (U) over the valley approaching the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The first glimpse of the waterfalls is, hence, from across the valley.

Our guide knew the exact point at which we would see the waterfalls. When the train got there, he started shouting “camera ready, viewpoint, viewpoint”.

We readied our cameras. The train slowly (and extremely steadily) approached the viewpoint – and we froze. We just couldn’t take our eyes off the majestic Dudhsagar waterfalls. At that moment, we couldn’t care about the camera, the photograph, the viewpoint or anything else.

The Dudhsagar waterfalls, even from that far across the valley, had hypnotised us.

The milk like water of the Dudhsagar waterfall on the border of the states Goa and Karnataka in India.

Trekking to the pool at the base of Dudhsagar waterfalls

At this point, you can trek down from the tracks into the forest of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Companies which offer trek to Dudhsagar waterfalls, often take this route. Through the forest, you reach the bottom tier of these waterfalls. You can return to Kulem via the forest route.

Important point note: This trekking option is not available in the monsoon. The Mandovi river, over which the Dudhsagar waterfalls are located swells in the monsoon and flow with an enormous force.

Walking on the railway tracks at the Dudhsagar waterfalls

You can combine trek and travel by train to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls

  • Dudhsagar Railway station is part of the Southwest Railway division of the Indian Railways. Passenger trains do not stop at Dudhsagar railway station. There is no platform here. You can get off the train only if the train gets a signal at Dudhsagar. You will then need to climb down the ladder and jump onto the ground. Words of caution: You need to be fit enough to jump off the train directly on the railway tracks. Travelling with babies or dependent seniors is a strict no-no.
  • If you manage to get off at the Dudhsagar railway station, you will have to walk back for around 1 km to reach the waterfalls. Be warned: Boarding and deboarding at the Dudhsagar railway station are officially not allowed by the Railway Police.
  • If you take the Amravati Express or the Vasco Kulem passenger in the morning, you can easily return to Madgaon by boarding the Amravati Express from Sonalium ( doesn’t operate on Sundays ).

Our journey to Dudhsagar waterfalls

We travelled on a passenger train from Madgaon to Kulem. At Kulem, we boarded a goods train. Some local guys agreed to be our guides and fixed us up with the motorman of the train that was going to leave soon. We stood on the edge holding onto the railing outside the engine of the goods train. Travelling up the steep Braganza pass on the seamless tracks through a lush green forest in a rhythmic motion, with the wind in our faces, we felt one with nature!

From a distance, it looks like the surroundings of the Dudhsagar waterfalls are covered in clouds. It is actually just the spray from the waterfalls. Its momentum is so strong, it actually crosses over to the other side of the railway tracks. We had to put our camera away to prevent it from being sprayed over.

A tree stands leafless in the spray of the Dudhsagar waterfall on the border of Goa and Karnataka in India.

Rules about trekking to Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks

Before we go ahead, read this: Walking on the railway tracks is banned by the Railway Police. You are officially not allowed to access the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks.

Since the ban was put in place, we have received contradictory feedback from our readers who visited the Dudhsagar waterfalls individually. While some managed to easily walk over the railway tracks, others were stopped by the Railway Police and forced to turn back. We have also heard narrations of Railway Police standing near the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the monsoon and ensuring no one gets off the train.

When we travelled to the Dudhsagar waterfalls by the goods train, the ban was NOT in place and we did not face any problems.

If you are planning a self-organised trek to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, there will be some uncertainty.

Jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

Map of the route to dudhsagar waterfalls by jeep safari.

A jeep safari through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is the recommended and the officially permitted way to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Why we chose a tour to visit Dudhsagar waterfalls by jeep safari?

“Jeeps cross several streams through a dense forest”, we had heard of the drive to the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. This line had stayed with us ever since.

To visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls along this route via the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, we had to first reach Kulem. It’s a roughly 2-hr drive of around 80 km from Baga/Calangute to Kulem.

Once you cross the bridge to Panaji and take the road to Ponda, the winding road starts. It’s a beautiful forested route, through the hilly villages of Goa. This isn’t your typical landscape of Goa of the sand and waves.

We didn’t feel like venturing on such a long undulating route on a bike. And it’s a well-known fact that cabs can be prohibitively expensive in Goa. We felt it made sense to sign up for a jeep safari tour to Dudhsagar waterfalls.

What all did our tour to Dudhsagar waterfalls include?

  • Pick up and drop right our hotel on the Baga-Calangute road in North Goa
  • Tickets to the Dudhsagar waterfalls – cost of the jeep safari and life jacket (which is compulsory). We had to pay separate camera charges at the gate of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Local Goan lunch at a spice plantation
  • Sightseeing in old Goa

It was a good deal, freeing up our time to soak in the sights of Goa we weren’t familiar with.

The driver called us the previous night to confirm the pickup location and time. On the day of our jeep safari, we received another call from the driver ten minutes prior to our pick up time, to ask if we were ready. Promptly at 6 AM, we were picked up from the Baga-Calangute road, 2 minutes away from our Hotel Santiago Resort . We were impressed with this promptness of service, right at the start.

The jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls starts at Kulem

Reaching kulem before the jeep safari starts.

Everything about Kulem suggests that it has been woken up from its long hibernation by the sudden fame of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Otherwise, it’s one of those little villages that minds its own business.

Because Kulem is at the base of the Braganza ghat, long-distance trains have to halt at this railway station to attach an additional locomotive to pull them up towards the Dudhsagar waterfalls and further up to Castle Rock in Karnataka.

These days you see a series of breakfast joints no bigger than holes in walls but overflowing with tourists – both Indian and international. Our minibus dropped us at the parking lot in Kulem from where we walked to the Dudhsagar taxi stand (just outside the Kulem railway station). While we had our breakfast (does the needful but don’t expect anything much), our driver cum tour guide went ahead to sort out our jeep tickets.

“Refreshment

The ticket counter for the jeep safari in Kulem

The jeep safari for Dudhsagar waterfalls starts from the entrance to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Kulem. These jeep safaris are organised by the Goa Forest Department. They take you to the bottom of the waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

If you have driven down to Kulem, you can park your vehicle in the parking lot which is a 2-minute walk from the Kulem jeep safari ticket counter. The Kulem railway station is also not more than 5 minutes away.

Not surprisingly (this is India after all!), chaos reigned at the taxi stand. It was a huge relief having someone take care of these logistics for us and not having to scamper in the unruly semblance of a queue. Instead, we busied ourselves in some people watching. Some excited, other restless, everyone waiting. Some local grocery stores were opening up. Only in Goa, you have a grocery store clubbed in with a “wine shop”!

Meanwhile, our driver had split us into groups of seven. And instructed us, repeatedly, to not disperse. “If the group is not together, there will be grave problems”. We appreciated that he was taking his responsibility to send us to the Dudhsagar waterfalls so seriously. After around 30 minutes, we were finally seated in our jeeps to take us to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

If you aren’t taking a tour for the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls…

We recommend you reach the ticket counter at Kulem as early as you can.

What’s the hurry? Allow us to explain.

  • The charge for a jeep to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, which seats 7, is Rs. 2800. If you aren’t a group of seven, you’ll have to form a group with other solo travellers or smaller groups. It is not advisable to go to the jeep safari ticket counter without a pre-formed group. The staff here doesn’t help you with group formation.
  • Chaos looms here in the group formation stage. This was one of the main reasons we were happy to have taken a tour of the Dudhsagar waterfalls since our driver cum guide took care of all these logistics.
  • The Dudhsagar waterfalls close at 4.30 PM. To make sure that all vehicles and tourists are out of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary by this time, they stop the sale of tickets by roughly 2 PM.
  • Dudhsagar waterfalls are no longer just a weekend destination. People vacationing in Goa also visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls these days. International tourists make a huge chunk of the visitors. This popularity of the Dudhsagar waterfalls means that there is quite a rush for the jeep safari even on a weekday.

Your best chances of a peaceful visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls are by reaching the ticket counter at Kulem at the earliest. We would recommend being there by 9 AM.

If you are committed to being among the first ones to enter the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to have the Dudhsagar waterfalls all to yourself, we recommend staying somewhere closer to Kulem.

The total ticket for the jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls is:

  • Cost of the jeep safari – Rs.2800 per jeep, seats 7
  • Rent for the life jacket (compulsory) – Rs. 30
  • Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary entry fee – Rs. 50
  • Additional charges for the camera.

Inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary on a jeep safari to Dudhsagar waterfalls

The dirt track starts right after we left the Kulem taxi stand. An arc saying Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary welcomes you in. The jeeps halt here to pay the sanctuary entry fees. This is also where you pay the camera fees.

Interestingly, among the list of attractions listed by the forest department, “Nature all through the route” makes an appearance! The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a plastic-free zone. Our jeep driver asked us if we had any plastic bottles with us. You have to report the count here and on the way back they ensure you’re carrying them all out. Do not leave any plastic objects behind, at the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

“Inside

We were now in a dense forest. This is part of the western ghats is mostly evergreen. We were just settling into the unsettling feel of the rickety drive when we were faced with a huge river. Our driver deftly drove the jeep through this water body without even a slight flinch. The seven of us were, however, holding onto the seats in front, as if our lives depended on it.

This route to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls opens only in October after the monsoon ends. The river was swollen enough to give us goosebumps even as the water levels had started receding. We shuddered to think what it would look like in the monsoon!

A few locals take tourists on bike rides through the sanctuary to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the monsoon. The forest department doesn’t officially approve of this. And after seeing the might of the river in late November, we do not recommend venturing out in the rains to the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

The dirt track continued with the Dudhsagar river now flowing to our left. We were driving through the stillness of the forest now. It was late morning, around 10 AM. The birds had retreated. The mild breeze rustled some leaves. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the end of the motorable track. We saw a temple towards the end and a tribal settlement of a handful of huts. We were surprised that someone actually lived here inside the forest.

“Dudhsagar

The driver now gave us the life jackets (these are compulsory) and told us to be back in an hour. There’s a watchtower here which gave us the complete view of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. But this time we were more interested in being in its waters at the waterfall’s base pool.

The walk through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A flight of steps took us to the floor of the forest and we began our 15-20 minute walk to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. It’s a rocky uneven patch. The rocks can be slippery, so appropriate footwear is recommended. It’s an easy walk and anyone with moderate fitness can easily reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls. However, it is not suitable for those needing wheelchair assistance.

“Monkey

Playful monkeys gave us company throughout the walk. By now, they are quite used to having humans around. They might even give you a nice pose for your picture, but please do not feed them . They live in their natural habitat, the forest, and are smart enough to gather their own food, without human assistance. Let’s not ruin that pleasure for them by introducing them to the evils of chips and the likes.

We crossed a small wooden flat bridge and got the view of the Dudhsagar waterfalls cascading down. The railway bridge is clearly visible.

The pool at the base of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

We made our way through the rocks, found a safe (and dry) place to keep our shoes, tucked our camera bag under a bigger rock and stepped into the water. The freshness of the cold water at the base of the Dudhsagar waterfalls hit us like a bolt.

From within the pool, only the bottommost tier of the Dudhsagar waterfalls is seen. This itself can qualify as a nice big waterfall to chill under. The pool is safe to swim and you can reasonably easily reach under the waterfall. Even with the sun above our heads, the water, however, is pretty cold! The water is also clear enough to see several mid-sized fish swimming in.

“Sandeepa

The force of the waterfall in the monsoon is prohibitively massive to feel anything other than the spray of its water at a distance of several meters. We were delighted that we had finally stepped foot in the waters of the Dudhsagar waterfalls. We spent a long while soaking in the natural pool.

is dudhsagar trek banned

It struck us after a while that none of our co-passengers on this tour to the Dudhsagar waterfalls could be seen around. We had lost track of time and imagined our jeep driver fuming with rage at our delay. We got into dry clothes (changed at a pretty sketchy arrangement, right there on the rocks) and ran through the rocks and forest.

The driver smiled as he saw us run. He probably was used to his passengers losing track of time at the Dudhsagar waterfalls. He knew the time wasn’t enough. But he had to stick to the schedule to enable smooth functioning of the Dudhsagar jeep safari tours. We took the same route out, through the dirt track and the Dudhsagar river.

Tips for going on a jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

  • You have to reach the ticket counter for the jeep safari in Kulem early in the morning.
  • We started from North Goa at 6 AM. By the time we entered the sanctuary, some jeeps were already returning back from the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • The Dudhsagar waterfalls close at 4.30 PM and tickets are not sold after roughly 2 PM.
  • It’s best to have a pre-decided group of 7 before you buy your tickets so you don’t waste time waiting for your jeep to fill in.
  • To avoid all this logistical management, we are glad we pre-booked our jeep safari tour for the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • Wear comfortable footwear on this journey as it involves a 15-20 minutes walk through the rocky forest patch.
  • Life jackets are compulsory and should be worn before entering the pool at the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • Women can feel free to wear a swimming costume inside the pool at the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Sketchy changing facilities do exist near the pool.
  • Toilets are available inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Their cleanliness is a whole other topic, but the facility exists.
  • Locker facilities are not available. If you need to take a camera, it’s security and safety (keeping it dry) is entirely your responsibility.

Lunch at a spice plantation and visiting parts of old Goa after the jeep safari

All the swimming and adventure of the river crossings meant our bellies were all fired up. We drove to a spice plantation that seemed hidden in the forest. A quick tour through the plantation and introduction to the spice trees later, we attacked the lunch spread. Fried mackerel, chicken curry and of course, the Goan feni were waiting for us.

Our return journey took us through the quarters of old Goa, stopping at a few churches. We reached our hotel in North Goa just in time to enjoy an orange streaked sunset at the Baga beach .

Trekking expedition to the Dudhsagar waterfalls

The Youth Hostel Association of India organises an 8-day trekking expedition to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The expedition starts at Panaji. You trek up to the village of Kuveshi via the Dudhsagar waterfalls. This expedition includes a trek to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls as well.

What else is to see in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary besides the Dudhsagar waterfalls?

  • While there are several smaller waterfalls particularly just after the monsoon, another bigger waterfall is the Tambdi Surla.
  • It is within the Mollem National Park of which the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a part. However, it is far from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and clubbing the two waterfalls in a day will not be possible.
  • Another interesting feature inside the sanctuary and actually close to the Dudhsagar waterfalls is the Devil’s Canyon. Even though it is en route, having a strict schedule means that your jeep driver will not halt at the Devil’s Canyon.
  • We recommend hiring a local guide and planning a separate visit than the jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. The guide can take you to the Tambdi Surla waterfalls as well as the Devil’s Canyon.

Map to the Tambdi Surla waterfall

Where can you stay to explore the Dudhsagar waterfalls and the Mollem National Park?

There are a few eco-resorts between Mollem and Kulem which are a perfect place to stay if you want to take your time exploring the Mollem National Park. Most of these are located midway to the Dudhsagar waterfalls and the Tambdi Surla waterfalls.

Some options to stay are

  • Nature’s Nest : A perfect spot for those into birding. Day trips to Dudhsagar and Tambdi Surla waterfalls are easily possible. A place to disconnect from the world, no Wifi and mobile phone network can be a problem in these hills.
  • Jungle Book : A unique little stay option. Excursions into the National Park are easily possible. These are nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.
  • Dudhsagar Farmstay : You can while away your time within this property (Wifi and a natural water swimming pool!), this place is also equidistant from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and Tambdi Surla.

Castle Rock – a dreamy hamlet ahead of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

A visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls should not end with just a visit to the waterfalls. Because further ahead is Castle Rock, a town that looks like it’s emerged straight out of a storybook. Where goods trains are the most common mode of transport. And the locals seem unaware of the hidden gems their town (hamlet, really!) has to offer.

The name “Castle Rock” was inviting enough and a 30-40 minute train ride ahead got us there. When we got off the train at Castle Rock, the station master there was surprised. He assumed we were there by mistake. He vehemently insisted there was nothing to see in Castle Rock and asked us to leave for Dudhsagar waterfalls!

Castle Rock railway station in Karnataka, ahead of the Dudhsagar waterfalls

Castle Rock was a sleepy little hill town. The Castle Rock railway station seemed to be the only reason the town existed. All the infrastructure belonged to the Indian Railways and being a Sunday, everything was shut. Apart from these railway buildings, the place is a small village. Families keep poultry at homes and they cook in wood-fired stoves.

castle Rock Adventure Camp

It felt like we were part of a story, wandering around in a magical land in search of a treasure. And sure enough, we found one, in the form of a board saying “Castle Rock Adventure Camp” run by the Karnataka government. “Discover a new trail every time” was their charming tagline!

We followed the tree-lined misty trail. It eventually led us to the fully functional campsite – that apparently no one knew about!

castle_rock_cabin

There were a couple of cabins for stay, each equipped with 12 bunk beds. The outdoor seating and dining arrangements were at the perfect vantage points. We even met the trained staff, who took care of food and security.

On that cold misty afternoon, it looked really picturesque. Had we known of this place earlier, we would have definitely planned to stay here for a night at least, after our visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Visit to the Spice Plantations near Dudhsagar waterfalls

The cool temperatures on these hills of the western ghats mean that the weather here is conducive to grow spices. After your jeep safari to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, you can have lunch at one of the many spice plantations in the vicinity. These plantations often organise a tour of the spice garden followed by a Goan lunch, a taste of the famous drink of Goa, the feni , included. You can also buy some farm fresh spices from these spice plantations.

After researching a lot on the web, last year I visited Dudh sagar falls passing by through train from Madgaon to Castle Rock (Vasco Howrah Exp – 18048, De. 07:50 Ar. 09:20) and return from Castle Rock to Badhaon (KCG Vasco Exp – 17603 De. 11:30 Ar. 13:55) on Thursday because you have a proper passenger train only on Thursday both up and down to get you through the Dudhsagar Falls. You should not depend on Freight trains as their timetable is not fixed. I also had an option of trek from Kulem to Dudhsagar but my hard luck, none of my friends agreed. However you should keep all trecking clothes, shoes and abandunt water with you, for this I have a number Mr. PURUSHOTTAM 8975745140. It was good luck that the railway track was open because a day before I visited there happened a landslide and the work was in progress.

Great post. I had visited the falls in May 2013 via the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and I am planning to visit again this May end. However, this time, I would like to take the train route from Madgaon. Can you tell us whether walking on the tracks are allowed / will be allowed in May this year? Walking on the railway tracks is officially banned. You can visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. Tickets are available at Kulem, at the taxi stand outside the railway station.

What is the distance from Sonalium station to Dudhsagar bridge by walking and can I get train to Sonalium from Goa ? Also please advose currently can we see good fall, I am planning to go there on 25th November.

It is a leisure 40-minute walk from Sonalium to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. If you are allowed to get on the railway track, you can board a train from Sonalium to get back to Madgaon (that’s what we had done). Another alternative is going through the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary by buying the tickets in Kulem. The waterfalls in November will be much reduced than in the monsoon, but the drive in the forest and the lower part of the falls where you can also dip in the waters is fantastic.

Is there locker facility and Cloak rooms available near dudhsagar falls?

' src=

Locker facility is not available here. You’ll have to leave everything in the car. Even plastic is banned beyond 4WD taxi stand.

Hi All, We are planning to go to visit dudhsagar falls around September mid-end 2017 from pune. Only option seems feasible is train & then walk. Does anyone know whether Goa express stops at dudhsagar or sonalium station? Also, as an alternate, whether to walk till falls from kulem or castle rock?

Thanks, Rajneesh

Our contacts at Dudhsagar have told us that this year the railway police have banned people from walking on the tracks. You can visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls by accessing the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary from Kulem.

' src=

May I know whether car parking is available in Kulem or not

It should be available at the Kulem railway station.

' src=

Thanks Ashique, I am from Bangalore and as Castle Rock comes first in my route choose that and aslo trek from here was more adventurous. However now I have to change my plans to start from Kolem.

' src=

Such a nice blog … so much information about doodhsagar …. guys I m planning to visit this Aug’17 by railway track …. I m planning to catch a train from madgaon to kollem or sonalium and from there I will walk through the railway tracks to doodhsagar …. I have just one query … after reaching kollem or sonalium, whether I will be permitted to walk through the tracks or not ?? some of the below post I ve seen that, CRPF is not allowing to walk through the tracks … do u ve this information, what is current situation over there ? …. I just don’t want to get disappointed after reaching there.

Hey Rupam, the railway police have been closing the track for walking every monsoon. But you will know the exact situation only closer to your date. We suggest you touch base again in the monsoon and we will update you about the situation after talking to our local contacts there.

' src=

So did u guys were able to trek to dudhsagar? We are also planning n it will be helpful if u can share ur experience

' src=

When did you go to. Dudhsagar? As far as I know approaching the falls is banned now

Hello Muniraj, yes – the railway police had banned the access tot he Dudhsagar waterfalls through the railway tracks for security reasons. But we have been told that post monsoon, it will be opened again.

' src=

I would like to know if November the falls would run dry and doesn’t make sense to go there?? Completely understand the monsoons is the best time but unable to go now and looking at your pictures want to see it soon.

November is a good time to see the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Esp this year, since the monsoon has been great and falls are in full flow!

' src=

Beautiful falls. Looks like you went there at the peak season. Thanks for the travel tips.

' src=

This is so amazing! The photos and description give an immediate need to visit the place. This looks really special 🙂

' src=

Ah! Too bad it’s off limit now. We were turned back from Caranzole.

You have captured the gorgeous falls wonderfully!

' src=

' src=

' src=

Beautiful. No wonder it’s called majestic.

We have no idea about any cottage or accommodation near Kulem. Your best bet for finding information regarding this would be to contact the forest department’s office there and ask. We do not have the numbers however. Wish you a happy travel experience to the Dushsagar waterfalls!

Hello Guys,

Please let me know how can I reach Dudhsagar from Mumbai by train.

' src=

Take 11029 mumbai-kolhaur Koyna Exp get down at pune. You have other train at 16:30 from pune 12780 NZM-VSG GOA Exp which reach Dudhsagar Waterfall cabin at 03:30 next morning

Is this an only way to reach Dudhsagar from Mumbai? I have been told that Amravati Express too passes somewhere near from Dudhsagar. Do you have any idea about it?

Hello Swapnil, monsoon is the best time to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls. You can take the goods train from either Kulem or Castle Rock (depending on whether you are traveling from Goa or KArnatake respectively) and get off at an earlier signal to avoid too much trekking and yet experience some adventure. Rains should not hamper your visit to the Dudhsagar waterfalls by train.

Hello Swapnil

Wish you a great travel to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. There is probably a canteen at the Kulem railway station. However it doesnt open early in the morning. More food options are available only at Madgaon on the Goa side of the Braganza ghat. We recommend carrying food supplies from there on the way to the Dudhsagar waterfalls and not relying on food options on the way.

Hello Sandeepa and Chetan,

I wanted to know where can I get the details about the “Castle Rock Adventure Camp” run by the Karnataka government. Is http://www.ecotrails.in , the appropriate website for it? Let me know whatever information you may have about it. Thank you and Happy travelling to you both!

Love, Gaurangi

Hello Gaurangi, this is the link to the adventure resort we saw in Castle Rock. http://www.indiatourismecatalog.com/india_states_travel_guide/karnataka/karnataka_wild_jungle_camps_trails.html If this isnt helpful, try these options which is a friend suggested. There is a Dilip SHinde guest house, very close to the Castle Rock railway station gate. Else, there is a PWD guest house. You can try to contact the caretaker, Prakash at 9535552603. Wish you a great travel to the Dudhsagar water falls and Castle Rock.

Hello Ankur, yes tickets are available for Kulem from Madgaon. An alternate way to get to Dudhsagar waterfalls from Kulem is to walk through the railway tracks over Braganza ghats. On weekends in monsoon, you will find groups doing this. There might be passenger trains going up at your time which can halt at Sonalium. From there its only a short walk to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

' src=

Friend, you have written that take a Railway train like Amravati Express and get off at Sonalium. But when we saw the railway timetable, there is no stop at Sonalium for Amravati Express. I want to know whether the train Amaravati express really stops at Sonalium so that we can get down at Sonalium and trek to Doodhsagar. Kindly clarify, thank you.

Hello K N Nagaraja, the station Sonalium is probably not mentioned because Sonalium is not a full fledged station. You can not but ticket at Sonalium. When we boarded at Sonalium on the way back from the waterfalls, we bought the tickets for the journey at Kulem.

' src=

Thanks for such valuable info… i will be coming from HYD…Getting down at castle rock..then walk or goods train to falls… but while coming back.. what is best route… from falls to kulem to hyd? or falls to londa stn to hyd? how much is distance upto londa stn from falls and how to get there?..or any other best route, pls suggest… thanks and regards, parag

Hello Parag, we saw a lot of families on a day picnic traveling to and fro from Castle Rock to the Dudhsagar waterfalls in a goods train. If you intend to go back to Hyd from the Dudhsagar waterfalls (and not go towards Madgaon), then there is no point going towards Kulem. Stay on the Karnataka side of Dudhsagar.

' src=

Is tickets for kulem is available at madgaon railway station? and what is alternate way to reach falls from kulem other than goods train?and what for return?

It is possible. You trek through the forest, cross the railway track and trek up mountains to Kuveshi. Have a look here for one such trek http://travelnew.tumblr.com/post/107399990600/goa-beach-forest-trek-on-new-year-eve

' src=

Thank you for the reference (came across this while surfing) 😀

Haha…cool!

Dudhsagar Trekking Information

Trekking has been banned for the tourists. Anyone undertaking it would be fined or even imprisoned by the Indian railways officials. Railway protection force policemen would be present in each coach of the train which goes from Castle Rock to Kulem. They will keep an eye on passengers and won’t allow the passengers to get down at Dudhsagar Station. R.P.F policemen are deployed in the areas near the waterfalls too. The ban has been put because some time back people threw stones at Dudhsagar railway station as they couldn’t board the train. Now, you can only enjoy the beauty of Dudhsagar waterfalls through the moving train. When the monsoon season is over, you can also visit the falls through jeep safaris. It is only the karma of people that a lot of other people miss out the fun of trekking.

12 Actors Who Did Not Accept Their Oscars (Live Or At All)

The original ending of pretty woman explained (and why it changed), this thriller with 80% on rotten tomatoes that just hit netflix is a reminder of how good mark wahlberg can be.

  • Richard Gere was banned from the Oscars and China for making political remarks as an Academy Awards presenter in 1993.
  • Despite the ban, Gere made a successful return to the Oscars in 2003 and again in 2013, showcasing his resilience in Hollywood.
  • Gere's career faced challenges post-1993, but he has returned with a 2023 film and three upcoming projects, including Paul Schrader's "Oh, Canada."

Fans of the vaunted award ceremony or those who love the films of the '80s and '90s heartthrob may be wondering, "Why was Richard Gere banned from the Oscars ?" Richard Gere is an award-winning actor whose credits include some of the greatest romantic comedies and successful romantic dramas of all time with Pretty Woman , An Officer and a Gentleman , and Runaway Bride . With four Golden Globe nominations and one win for Best Actor in Chicago , and two SAG nominations with one win, again for Chicago , it's a wonder Gere has never been nominated for an Oscar .

There are plenty of talented actors who have never had the honor of being nominated. In Richard Gere's case, however, part of his misfortune stems from the fact that Gere was banned from the ceremony for 20 years. There have been plenty of strange and dark moments at the Oscars over the years. Some of these have led to actors being banned from the event. People like Carmine Caridi, Will Smith, Roman Polanski, and Harvey Weinstein have all been banned for progressively more concerning reasons, but Gere's ban was under unique circumstances.

Winning an Academy Award is a huge deal but some actors have either not received theirs live or completely refused it altogether.

Carmine Caridi was banned for sharing screeners of nominated films with people outside the Academy's purview.

Richard Gere Was Banned From The Oscars (& China) For Making Political Remarks As A Presenter

China banned gere from entering forever for his comments.

At the 1993 Oscars, the 65th Academy Awards, and just a few years after Pretty Woman , Richard Gere was asked to present the award for Best Art Direction, which ended up going to Luciana Arrighi and Ian Whittaker for Howards End . During his speech, Gere went off-script and began berating the Chinese government for its treatment of the Tibetans and the Chinese people (via Hello! Magazine ). A long-time and vocal adherent to Tibetan Buddhism, Gere was and has since been outspoken against China.

After noting in his presentation that over one billion people were watching the 1993 Oscars ceremony, Gere made comments about the " horrendous human rights situation there is in China ." The actor elaborated that he wanted this moment to send " love and truth and a kind of sanity to Deng Xiaoping ," who was the leader of the People's Republic of China until his death in 1997, while imploring him to remove troops from Tibet and allow them to live independently again . This portion of Gere's speech only lasted about one minute, but was enough for the Oscars to ban him from the ceremony until long after the turn of the 21st century.

After noting in his presentation that over one billion people were watching the 1993 Oscars ceremony, Gere made comments about the " horrendous human rights situation there is in China ."

Pretty Woman is a well-known movie, starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. However, the original script had a not-so-happy ending.

How Long Did Richard Gere's Oscars Ban Last?

Richard gere had a lengthy ban from the ceremony.

This speech ended up getting Gere banned from the Oscar ceremony for 20 years and also earned him a lifetime ban from China . However, he was permitted to attend the 2003 ceremony when Chicago , in which Gere played silver-tongued lawyer Billy Flynn, was nominated for and won Best Picture. He also returned to the Academy Awards in 2013, the 85th Oscars, to introduce the performance of Best Song nominee "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" and present Best Original Score and Best Original Song alongside his Chicago castmates Queen Latifah, Renée Zellweger, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Gere winkingly told Huffington Post ,

"Apparently, I've been rehabilitated. It seems if you stay around long enough, they forget they've banned you."

Richard Gere's Oscars ban was technically lifted in 2013 , but the actor hasn't made any appearances at the ceremony in the decade since. However, this isn't too surprising considering Gere hasn't been in too many movies since then. With the Academy Awards' trend of reuniting actors from classic movies for presentations, such as Beetlejuice 's Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara or Twins ' Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito at the 2024 Oscars, it's still possible that a future Oscar ceremony could see Gere return alongside one of his former co-stars like Julia Roberts to present an award.

What Other Actors Have Been Banned From The Oscars

Richard gere is among only a few people who have been banned for various reasons.

Getting banned from the Oscars is rare, and has only happened on a few occasions since Richard Gere's expulsion in 1993. In addition to Richard Gere, the other actors who have been banned from the Oscars include The Godfather Part II 's Carmine Caridi, The Cosby Show 's Bill Cosby, and King Richard 's Will Smith . Actors aren't the only Hollywood figures who have been banned from the ceremony, however, as producer Harvey Weinstein, director Roman Polanski, and cinematographer Adam Kimmel have also been prohibited from attending the Oscars in recent years.

The length of the ban and the reasons for being barred from the Oscars vary by person and reason. Gere's ban lasted 20 years for his off-script speech, whereas Carmine Caridi was permanently banned after illegally distributing VHS "screeners" of movies to his friend. Furthermore, the Academy gave lifetime bans to Harvey Weinstein in 2017, Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski in 2018, and Adam Kimmel in 2021 after each received sexual assault or misconduct charges, convictions, or allegations. The latest person to be banned from the Oscars is Will Smith , who received a 10-year ban after slapping presenter Chris Rock on-stage at the 2022 Academy Awards.

Gere Stepped Out Of The Spotlight, But He's Returning To Hollywood

Richard gere appeared in a 2023 film and has three more on the way.

Richard Gere had difficulty finding work in major Hollywood productions after 1993 , a fact he claimed was because of Hollywood's financial relationship with China, but he still acted in smaller independent films. However, in 2017, after starring in The Dinner and Three Christs , Gere stayed out of the spotlight for six years. It wasn't until 2023 that he finally appeared in a movie again, playing Howard in Maybe I Do , a romantic comedy where he costars in an ensemble alongside Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey, and William H. Macy.

Despite the stellar cast, the film was a flop, earning a paltry 32% on Rotten Tomatoes , but it was a sign that Gere was back. Now Richard Gere has three films on the docket. Longing and The Making Of are in early pre-production but Paul Schrader's Oh, Canada is an upcoming 2024 film where Gere will play the older version of Jacob Elordi's character, Leonard Fife. Jacob Elordi is a major star at the moment and with Gere attached to a film with him, there's a hope that the veteran's star may rise once more.

Oh, Canada (2024)

Oh, Canada is a lighthearted comedy about an American businessman who unexpectedly inherits a maple syrup farm in rural Canada. As he navigates the quirks of small-town life and syrup farming, he learns valuable lessons about community and simplicity.
