What you need to know before you visit Xcaret

Located in Mexico’s popular Riviera Maya, Xcaret is an eco-archaeological park with over 50 attractions. Visitors come to Xcaret to snorkel with fish, explore underground rivers and caves, learn about Mayan culture, see wildlife and enjoy its tropical surroundings. It has a lot of similarities to nearby Xel-Ha Park .

This family friendly adventure park is situated 60 km south of Cancun International Airport, 6 km from Playa del Carmen and 57 km north of Tulum. It takes about an hour to drive to Xcaret from Cancun .

We have visited the Riviera Maya several times before, but this was the first time we visited its amusement parks. After researching each one, and reading the recommended ages (our youngest is 4 years old), we decided to visit Xel-Ha and Xcaret on our most recent trip to Mexico.

Should you visit Xcaret? Is it worth it?

In our opinion, the answer is yes. However, you’ll want to be prepared before you go.

We learned a lot during our first visit to the park. The big realization was that we were not fully prepared for our visit. The purpose of this post is to share our firsthand experience with you so you don’t make some of the mistakes/assumptions that we did.

Below are a few things we learned while visiting Xcaret.

Xcaret map inside Mexico amusement park, Xcaret travel guide for travelling families

Xcaret park is really big

Xcaret is over 200 acres (81 hectares)! You’re unlikely to explore the entire park in one visit, especially with young children. It’s just too big to do it properly in one day.

We suggest you take a look at the map  and plan your activities in order of location.

A good way to organize your day would be to group your activities by sections, like South, North, East and West. Or, by water activities versus land activities. For example, you would do land activities in the morning and evening, and water activities mid-day so you avoid changing clothes multiple times a day.

If you’re traveling with young kids, we suggest you bring a stroller or rent one at the park.

They have single (299 pesos) and double strollers (399 pesos) available to rent. It’s a big park, so this is money well spent. Our boys were 6 and 4 years old during our visit and they complained that we were walking too much.

Keep in mind, it’s quite hot during the day. Bring hats and reef safe sunscreen .

Xcaret is very family friendly

If you’re traveling with kids 4 years old or under, admission to the park is free. Children between the ages 5 to 12 years old will get a discounted rate on admission.

It’s a good idea to bring or rent a stroller if you have younger children. Most of the park is flat and there are stroller friendly paths to most exhibits.

Kid friendly activities include: viewing jaguars, turtles of all sizes, sharks, manatees and coral reef aquarium. Children’s World , one of the newest attractions at Xcaret, has water slides, hanging bridges, cenotes, a parakeet habitat and a playground. There’s also a butterfly pavilion and wild bird aviary inside Xcaret.

Information about Xcaret activities can be found here .

Xcaret restaurant not all inclusive, things to know about Xcaret Mexico

Xcaret is NOT all-inclusive

Xcaret is NOT all-inclusive. If you are staying at an all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya, this may feel like a surprise. Some of the other adventure parks in the area are all inclusive, so this can be confusing.

You will need to bring cash and a credit card with you. There are extra charges for day lockers, strollers, snorkel equipment, towels, food and beverages.

Should you watch Xcaret Mexico Espectacular?

We made the mistake of not properly planning our time inside the park. We arrived early, around 9:30 AM. On the surface, this seemed like the right idea. However, if you want to attend the evening shows, we learned that an early arrival time is not ideal.

Our boys were pretty tired and cranky by 6:00 PM. There was no way they would survive the Xcaret MĂ©xico Espectacular evening show.

Because of this, we did not get to see the big show. This was unfortunate because we’ve heard it’s the highlight of Xcaret. We did see some of the actors in costume before the show began. It looks like quite the spectacle.

Travel tip – Plan your visit to include the evening show. If you have young kids, it might be wise to arrive at the park late morning or mid-day.

We did watch the evening horse show.

This Mexican cowboy show is quite entertaining and worth watching. If you haven’t had dinner yet, consider eating at La Cocina (located near the park entrance) because it’s right beside the horse show. The restaurant has some of the best seats to watch the show.

The horse show finishes before the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular evening show.

Should you spend time at Xcaret Beach?

If your hotel or resort does not have a nice beach, you may want to save some beach time for Xcaret. It’s beautiful stretch of beach with safe and calm water, which is ideal for young children who cannot swim. The water is warm and crystal clear (see photo above), and the sand is silky smooth. And there are plenty of chairs and loungers available.

To keep the cove water clear, and the fish safe, you’ll want to bring special sunscreen with you. Xcaret asks that guests only use biodegradable sunscreen, because normal sunscreens contain oils that pollute the water and cause illnesses to the marine life. The park strives to protect the environment and they ask visitors to do the same.

If you don’t have biodegradable sunscreen with you, you can purchase a bottle inside the park. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to purchase before you leave home. You can  order it on Amazon here .

Should you buy the Xcaret Plus Package?

Because Xcaret is NOT all-inclusive, you may find that the expenses start to add up. If you plan to eat while inside Xcaret, we suggest you purchase the Xcaret Plus package. Full details here .

The difference in price, from the basic admission, is an increase of $35.00 CAD per adult ($17.00 CAD for kids). The Xcaret Plus package gives you the following:

  • Access to Area Plus facilities including restrooms, dressing rooms and showers
  • Use of snorkeling equipment, life jackets and inner tubes
  • Safety bag service during the river journey
  • 1 Buffet lunch including 1 beer and unlimited beverages (soft drinks, flavored waters and coffee). There are 5 restaurants to choose from. The buffet costs $29 USD per adult, so if you plan to eat at the buffet, the price of the Plus Package will cover this cost.

Xcaret has optional activities for additional cost. Here’s the list

Build your own package and choose 2, 3 or 4 of the best Tours in Cancun and Riviera Maya.

Book online and save up to 25% at Xcaret

floating river inside Xcaret Cancun, Mexico family travel guide

Swimming in Xcaret’s underground caves

There are lots of things to do at Xcaret. Too many, actually (see the list of activities  here ). So, you have decisions to make.

One activity you can’t miss is swimming and snorkeling through the park’s network of underground rivers and caves. These sacred rivers and caves are unique to the Riviera Maya.

We underestimated the length and darkness of the caves, but you can exit at several stops along the way if you find it too long. Our 4 year old was a little scared of the darkness, and my father and mother (the kids grandparents, age 70 and 75 years old) found some sections to be too long.

Make sure you get a pair of fins. They make swimming through the caves so much easier.

If you purchase the Xcaret Plus package, you’ll want to find the dedicated Area Plus facilities to store your belongings. If you purchased basic admission, you’ll want to find day lockers to rent.

Last minute personal items, like shoes, hats, towels and wallets, are stored in a locked bag and transported to a station at the end of the river. You keep the key with you and pick up your belongings at the designated station. This is a nice service but it can be a little confusing.

When in doubt, ask questions.

What to pack for a day trip to Xcaret?

Here’s what we recommend you bring with you:

  • Bottled water
  • Biodegradable Sunscreen
  • Snorkel gear
  • Waterproof Camera ( we use this one )
  • Stroller (if you have kids)
  • Wrap for over your bathing suit
  • Extra change of clothes
  • Sweater (it gets chilly in the evening)
  • Small snacks for kids
  • Comfy shoes AND a pair of flip flops (you will do a lot of walking)
  • Cash and credit card

Travel tip – write your name and phone number on your kid’s wrist band (guests receive a wrist band upon entrance). That way, if your child gets lost, they can show an employee the phone number to call.

Also, it’s wise to explain to your kids what to do should they get lost. Create a plan and communicate it to them. Have them repeat the plan back to you.

Bring snacks and water with you

The park does not allow outside food, however, it’s a good idea to bring some bars and snacks for your kids. Our boys are always hungry, so they’re constantly snacking.

Our youngest boy is allergic to dairy and eggs, so we don’t know what food will be available for him. The park says it’s okay to bring baby food and milk/formula if you’re traveling with an infant.

Xcaret Park Hours of Operation

Xcaret Park is open 365 days a year from 8:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Regardless of when you plan to visit the Riviera Maya, you’ll be able to visit Xcaret.

According to the park website, the best days to visit are Saturday and Sunday because most hotel packages arrive and depart on those days.

If you’re traveling with young kids, and you want to watch the evening shows (it ends at 9:30 PM), we suggest you arrive a little later in the day. Have breakfast at your resort, then plan to arrive around noon and stay for the evening shows.

Xcaret Prices and How to get Xcaret Tickets

You can save 15% by booking online . There are different packages that include transportation, all inclusive food and options for additional activities like the Stingray Encounter and Swim with Dolphins.

The Xcaret Basic admission is $120.99 USD, while Xcaret Plus is $164.99 USD.

You can also purchase Xcaret tickets at most of the resorts in the Riviera Maya, and if you stay at the Xcaret Hote l admission is included.

Xcaret Ticket Price for Children

The admission is free for children under the age of 4. Children ages 5 to 11 get a discounted rate from the adult ticket price. ID is required in both cases.

Accessing your Xcaret tickets after online purchase

When you purchase Xcaret tickets online you will receive a coupon. This means your purchase was completed. This coupon must be printed and presented at the park’s ticket booths, with the signed credit card used for the payment and an official ID. Then, you will receive your access bracelets.

Expect long lines to get your tickets at the Xcaret entrance. Because there are so many vendors, tour operators and hotels selling tickets to guests, it can be a long process.

Get up to a 25% discount on activities and tours in Cancun and Riviera Maya.

How do you get to Xcaret Park?

Getting to Xcaret is easy. If you purchase a package, transportation is often included. Or, you can get a private transfer from your hotel or resort (that’s what we did).

The private transfer will pick you up at your hotel and drive you directly to the park entrance. It will also bring you back to your hotel at a time of your choosing.

We used Cheap Transfer Cancun. We actually used this company multiple times on our vacation to the Riviera Maya . The vans are new and they offer the proper car seat for our 4 year old. We would recommend them. Prices vary depending on distance and number of people. More info here .

We stayed at the Iberostar Del Mar and the trip to Xcaret was about 45 minutes. We paid $100 USD for a private transfer for 6 people (including car seat).

Staying at Hotel Xcaret

Another option is to stay at the all-inclusive Hotel Xcaret , which is connected to the park. This is by far the most convenient resort for Xcaret. The benefit to staying here is that admission to Xcaret parks and/or tours is included in the hotel price.

Read this hotel review to learn more about Hotel Xcaret. Hotel Xcaret is a 5 star property so you’ll want to compare prices to find the best deal.

We visited XCaret a few weeks ago. To say that it’s beautiful doesn’t do it justice! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Every question was greeted with a smile and useful answer with suggestions. The food is scrumptious and authentic. Please taste the molĂ© and flan. You won’t regret it! The activities are unique and fun for all ages. Never a dull moment everywhere you go. The evening show, Spectacular Mexico, is a definite must-see! You will learn everything about the Mayan history and Mexico’s culture from it’s early beginnings that encompasses every state in the country. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you love Mexico’s culture. It really takes 2 days to enjoy and experience everything. Wear comfortable shoes and swimwear underneath light clothes. You will WANT to get wet and jump into every watering hole. Just delightful!

We just booked our trip and are staying at the Occidental at Xcaret which is right next door to the park. My question is, can you enter and exit the park throughout the day or is it as soon as you leave you are done?

My husband and I will want to do a lot of things, but could also see us wanting to pop back to the resort next door for meals, shower, etc. but then go back for dinner show at Xcaret. Is this feasible?

We just got back 2 days ago from our family trip in the Riviera Maya. Xcaret park is amazing and yes you definitely need 2 days to cover all the park, we were able to go in and out as we pleased to any of the parks along with transportation but we stayed at Hotel Xcaret MĂ©xico (best decision it’s beautiful) which includes all the parks even Chichenitza one of the seven wonders of the world.

I have also booked the unlimited access to Xcaret through Occidental. Does this just include the in and out, or is the snorkel gear, river life vest, meal, included?

How long a walk is it into and out of the park to Occidental?

Followed your post. Got good tips. We are here now. We are staying at Hotel Xcaret. NOT Occidental. The hotel resort itself is only 1yr old. This place is is amazing. I booked this because i never heard of an ALL inclusive that included ALL PARKS and Tours. This included buffet food at the parks. The hotel is built into the environment and ecologically responsible. This was one our 1st all inclusives and i dont think anything will come close to this in awhile.

This place is incredible. If you can stay in Hotel Xcaret its worth every penny. You may need at least 5 days to see this area.

I was just there, for my first time, since moving to Playa del Carmen, over four years ago. LOVED IT!!! (I am a resident of Quintan Roo so I was able to purchase a one year pass-card for free admission to Xcaret for a year, as many times as desired. I will certainly be using it a LOT.

I brought a 1 liter bottle of water only half full to refill at the free water-refill stations throughout the park. That was suggested to me, the day before when I confirmed my ticket with official park office. She also advised taking only a small towel for drying off.

My friend, a Canuck, and a resident of QR, too, brought a giant beach towel and it really added a lot of weight to her back pack.. We are old broads and there is a lot of walking especially making ones way over to the beach area.

Thanks for the information, it really helps us plan. Wondering what time the show starts (sorry you missed it). Is there plenty of seating or do you have to get there early? Do you have to bring your own water or can you get it there? Thanks!

07/09/2019 at 9:28 am

The horse show is at 6, and the evening show is at 7. When we were watching the horse show, we did see a lot of people walking to get seats for the evening show. I think they will always have room, but if you want the prime seats then it’s best you go a bit early.

We did bring a bottle of our own water into the park. They didn’t ask to check our bags.

Our 4 year old will get free admission, but how much will they charge for his lunch?? (we will get Xcaret plus with lunch included)

My assumption is that if you get lunch included, so will your child. But you’d need to confirm with Xcaret.

Oyster Hotel Review

Huge resort with stunning, eco-minded design and caribbean views.

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

This eco-minded, all-inclusive hotel opened in December 2017, owned by the company Experiencias Xcaret that manages several area parks devoted to Mexican and Mayan history, landscape, and culture. Certainly the Hotel Xcaret's biggest appeal is that guests get free admission and transportation to the parks, as they can simply hop on a bus or shuttle boat numerous times each day. However, there's a lot to see on-site as well, with the design beautifully integrating with the natural rocks, rivers, and jungle. Housing a whopping 900 rooms across five "casas," some of which have special perks and exclusive amenities, grounds are expansive and well-manicured. Guests first drive down a long road past park entrances to reach the big palapa-style lobby, which has hanging planters, various natural materials, and casual cream poofs next to tree stump tables. From there, steps lead down to a stone path flanking a water feature that comes upon the ocean-view infinity pool with a swim-up bar. The resort of the resort is a jaw-dropping mix of caves and coves surrounded by lush greenery, which guests can explore by foot, kayak, or snorkeling -- visitors should keep an eye out for flamingos, iguanas, and tropical fish.

Hotel Xcaret has a breathtaking design with lots of nooks and crannies for guests to explore, and numerous areas take advantage of the lovely Caribbean views. Guests wear wristbands that act as room keycards, access to all-inclusive dining, and even sensors for various cameras spread across the resort. The property attracts an even mix of international and domestic couples and families, and because many spend their time at one of parks, the atmosphere is relaxed. The only time guests will likely feel the crowds are at check-in and check-out, when lines can be quite long. On the downside, swinging bridges and a lack of railings in certain areas can be difficult for those with mobility issues.

The property is undeniably impressive, but rates are high. For a cheaper option with direct park access (but not free admission), consider the Occidental at Xcaret Destination . For a smaller, more intimate property in Playa del Carmen, the luxurious Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a standout.

Coastal setting next to popular Xcaret eco-park

The beachfront Hotel Xcaret has a fantastic location for travelers planning on spending a lot of their time at one of the nearby parks. Guests get free admission and transportation (by boat or bus) to all the parks, including Xcaret eco-park (with raved-about Mayan shows), adventure-filled Xplor, and Xel-Ha, a great snorkeling spot. Additionally, tours of Chichen Itza and area "cenotes" are part of the all-inclusive package, with the former about a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. Guests aren't within walking distance of anything, but central Playa del Carmen is about an 18-minute drive away. Laid-back Tulum and its ruins are a 45-minute drive south, and Cancun is an 80-minute drive north. Cancun International Airport is a free hour's long shuttle ride.

Gorgeous, spacious rooms with jetted tubs and hammocks

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

The 900 rooms at Hotel Xcaret are all decorated similarly, done in a contemporary, beachy aesthetic with lots of locally inspired elements. Expect modern wood furniture, beige marble floors, pink accent walls, embroidered tapestries from Oaxaca, and turquoise pillows. The crowing feature of each room is the furnished outdoor terrace, which has chairs and a hammock, plus loungers and ocean vistas in some. Starting at 575 square feet and getting considerably larger in upgraded units, rooms are spacious and all fit a sofa bed, glass table and chairs, desk, and jetted tub. Bathrooms also come with separate rainfall showers, luxe toiletries that include bath bubbles, digital scales, hairdryers, robes, and slippers. Also standard are flat-screen TVs, free minibars with beer and soda, Nespresso machines, closets with laptop-sized safes, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning.

Rooms are spread among five buildings, each with their own theme. Casa Fuego is for adults only, and it has an exclusive ocean-view rooftop pool and bar, and restaurant. Casa Agua is by the spa and centers around wellness, while Casa Tierra is geared toward families. Rooms on levels 1 and 2 are typically overlooking the river or garden. Large suites are available, some of which have separate living spaces or swim-up access.

All-inclusive covers array of water-based features and parks

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

Hotel Xcaret is packed with on-site features, plus guests receive free admission and transportation to the Xcaret parks for Mayan shows, snorkeling, and zip-lining, to name a few. Reservations are required for a few of the parks, as well as free tours of Chichen Itza and area "cenotes" (swimming holes). While on the property, there's also a ton to keep visitors busy. Multiple pools, a lagoon, and river offer spots to take a dip, snorkel, or use the free kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. The ocean-view infinity pool with a swim-up bar is a favorite, as is the lagoon with its own stretch of sand and tropical fish. Toward the back of the resort is a family-friendly kids' pool with waterslides, plus an adjacent bar for adults. Casa Fuego has its own sleek rooftop pool. The oceanfront beach is long and lovely, kept natural with rocky areas. Loungers sit under umbrellas and flags designate the swimming conditions -- red means dangerous, while green is safe.

The elegant spa is gorgeous, featuring 15 individual cabins in their own cave-like structures, a hydrotherapy area with hot and cold pools, a sauna, and salon for nail and hair treatments. A well-regarded kids' club has organized activities all day, and it's next to the children-friendly buffet restaurant, Chibali. Tennis courts and three gyms (a couple exclusive to certain buildings) are available, plus the hotel puts on free yoga, meditation, and Tai chi each day. A gorgeous chapel is also on-site, and it provides gorgeous vistas of the surrounding landscape and Caribbean.

Wedding and function spaces are available, and there was a conference being held near the lobby during our visit. Also near the lobby are a store selling snacks and sundries, and an ATM machine. Wi-Fi is free across the resort.

All-Inclusive / Food

10 quality restaurants and several bars.

There are 10 restaurants and eight bars on-site, almost all of which are free for everyone to use. The Ha' restaurant is a gourmet tasting menu eatery run by Michelin-starred chef Carlos Gaytan; it's only open for dinner and it requires an added fee and reservation. Adults staying in Casa Fuego have exclusive access to an all-day a la carte restaurant and rooftop bar. The main buffet restaurant is Mercado 17, which has 10 themed stations to resemble a Mexican market. Other standouts include the dinner-only Xin-Gao, with Teppanyaki and a sushi bar, and Las Cuevas, a Mexican-meets-international spot serving dinner in a cave setting by the river. Eight bars are spread among the resort, including a swim-up bar, and all liquor, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages are covered. Guests can also find stands selling tacos, fruit, or juices set up. Food receives positive reviews across the board.

Is It Safe to Travel to Mexico? Here’s What You Need to Know.

A spate of incidents, including a kidnapping and the death of two Americans near the border, have prompted travel warnings from the U.S. government.

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

By Elisabeth Malkin and Isabella Kwai

Two Americans found dead after they were attacked and kidnapped near the border. Airports shuttered amid gang violence in Sinaloa. Turmoil among taxi drivers in CancĂșn.

A number of recent security incidents have raised concerns about the risks of traveling to Mexico, where more than 20 million tourists flew last year to visit the country’s beaches, cities and archaeological sites, or to obtain health care .

Ahead of the spring break holiday, a popular time for American tourists to visit the country, the U.S. Embassy issued a travel alert , urging visitors to exercise caution by avoiding dangerous situations and drinking responsibly, among other recommendations. “Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations,” the alert said. And the State Department has warned tourists to steer clear of six states, including the state of Tamaulipas, where the recent kidnapping occurred — and to exercise increased precautions in other popular destinations like Playa del Carmen, CancĂșn, Tulum and Mexico City.

An overwhelming majority of visitors enjoy a safe vacation in Mexico, and tourists are largely sheltered from the violence that grips local communities. But the attack and kidnapping of four Americans in the border city of Matamoros, two of whom were later found dead, along with recent disorder in CancĂșn and violence in early January that forced the closure of three airports in northwest Mexico, is prompting questions about whether the country’s broader unrest is spilling into other destinations.

What happened on the border?

On March 3, four Americans from South Carolina traveling in a white minivan crossed the border from Brownsville, Texas, into the city of Matamoros, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. One of the Americans was scheduled for cosmetic surgery.

Soon after the Americans crossed the border, gunmen fired on their vehicle and then abducted the group in a pickup truck. Officials later said that two of the group were found dead at a rural location alongside the other two, who had survived.

The Americans were attacked as a result of “confusion,” according to Irving Barrios, the state prosecutor in Tamaulipas. Matamoros has a long history of violence and highway shootouts, though that reputation has partially subsided in recent years. Then, in late February, one gang moved into the city to wrest control of drug sales from another, said Eduardo Guerrero, the director of Lantia Intelligence , a security consulting company in Mexico City.

“There are places in the country where the situation can change abruptly from one week to another,” he said. While the motives in the attack remain unclear, the Americans had “very bad luck,” Mr. Guerrero said, because they likely stumbled into a battle between the two gangs.

What happened earlier this year in CancĂșn?

Uber has been challenging the taxi unions for the right to operate in CancĂșn and won a court decision in its favor on Jan. 11. The ruling infuriated the powerful unions, which are believed to have links to local organized crime figures and former governors. Taxi drivers then began harassing and threatening Uber drivers.

The conflict generated widespread attention after a video of taxi drivers forcing a Russian-speaking family out of their rideshare car went viral, and after unions blocked the main road leading to CancĂșn’s hotel zone. That prompted the U.S. Embassy in Mexico to issue a security alert .

Mr. Guerrero said that the authorities will try to negotiate some kind of compromise, but there was a probability of more violence ahead.

Have authorities curbed violence that might affect tourists?

As a rule, criminals in Mexico are careful not to kill tourists, Mr. Guerrero explained, because doing so “can set in motion a persecution that can last years,” the consequences of which can be “very dissuasive,” he said.

But the rule doesn’t always hold. And in two popular destinations for foreign tourists — Los Cabos , at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, and the Caribbean coast — local and state officials have recently sought help from the United States to take on organized crime that threatened to drive off tourists.

A spasm of violence at the end of 2021 and early 2022 rattled the tourist industry along the Riviera Maya, the 80-mile strip of Caribbean resorts south of CancĂșn. Two visitors were killed in crossfire between local gangs in Tulum; a gunfight on a beach in Puerto Morelos sent tourists running for cover into a nearby hotel; a hit man gained entry to a luxury hotel in Playa del Carmen and killed two Canadian tourists believed to have links to organized crime.

The federal government sent National Guard units to patrol the beaches, and Quintana Roo state authorities asked U.S. law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration, to provide intelligence, Mr. Guerrero said. Local authorities, flush with tourism revenues, invested in the police, which is typically the weakest link in Mexican law enforcement.

The joint approach led to a lull in gangland gun battles in Quintana Roo’s tourist areas, and experts say that drug sales to meet foreign demand no longer take place on the street, although they are continuing more discreetly.

The success in tamping down drug violence in Quintana Roo follows a similar improvement in Los Cabos a couple of years ago when U.S. authorities also collaborated with local officials in the state of Baja California Sur. The murder rate soared in Los Cabos in 2017 amid cartel wars, and although tourists were not targeted, that year police chased gunmen into the lobby of a luxury hotel in San José del Cabo, and a cooler containing two heads was left in a tourist area.

What about tourist areas in other states?

Even in states where crime is very high, tourist areas have generally been spared. San Miguel de Allende, a haven for U.S. retirees, is an island of relative peace in a state, Guanajuato, that has been riddled with cartel violence .

The Pacific Coast state of Jalisco, home to the resort of Puerto Vallarta, picturesque tequila country and the cultural and gastronomic attractions of the state capital, Guadalajara , is also the center of operations of the extremely violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel . The cartel’s focus of violence is in the countryside; Puerto Vallarta and the beaches to its north, including the exclusive peninsula of Punta Mita and the surfers’ hangout of Sayulita, are all booming — and, despite drug sales, the cartel’s control seems to limit open conflict.

Mexico City has become a magnet for digital nomads and shorter term visitors , and concerns about violence there have receded. The city’s police force has been successful in reducing violent crime, particularly homicides, and the number of killings has been cut almost in half over the past three years.

Are there any other safety concerns?

Street crime is still a problem almost everywhere, especially in bigger cities and crowded spaces. Kidnapping and carjacking are a risk in certain regions and many businesses that cater to tourists operate under extortion threats. While tourists may not be aware of underlying criminal forces, their power sometimes spills out into the open in spectacular shows of violence.

The attack in Matamoros is only the most recent example. Mexican border cities, which have long endured waves of violence, are not typically tourist destinations, although Americans often cross the border to visit family, seek out cheaper health care or dine at restaurants.

Three airports in the state of Sinaloa, including the beach destination MazatlĂĄn, were closed on Jan. 5 amid gang violence after Mexican security forces arrested Ovidio GuzmĂĄn LĂłpez, a son of JoaquĂn GuzmĂĄn Loera, the crime lord known as El Chapo, who is serving a life sentence in the United States. A stray bullet fired by cartel gunmen shooting at a Mexican military plane as it landed at the airport in the state capital, CuliacĂĄn, clipped an Aeromexico plane preparing to take off for Mexico City. Nobody was hurt and the plane returned to the terminal.

In August, gunmen positioned burning cars and buses to block roads around Guadalajara in response to a military raid on a meeting of criminal bosses. In October, a local politician was shot and killed in an upscale steakhouse in suburban Guadalajara as terrified diners crawled to safety.

Pierre de Hail, the president of Janus Group Mexico, a risk management company in Monterrey, is skeptical that security has improved. “There is too much random risk,” he said. “It’s all about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

What precautions should tourists take?

Mr. de Hail recommends researching the resort and news from the area you’re visiting. The U.S. State Department provides state-by-state information about travel risks in Mexico. As of early March, the department had issued its strongest possible warning — Level 4: Do Not Travel — for six states, including Tamaulipas and Sinaloa. Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur are at Level 2, indicating that visitors should exercise increased caution. (By comparison, the same Level 2 advisory is applied to France and Spain.)

The Matamoros incident shows how violence can flare up in places that have been quiet recently. Mr. Guerrero suggests searching on the internet before traveling for news of recent outbreaks.

Mr. de Hail also suggests buying travel insurance in case of a medical emergency or theft, and recommends that tourists keep a low profile to avoid attracting attention, he said, warning that it is easy to misread situations.

As anywhere, common sense should prevail, Mr. de Hail said: Don’t wear expensive watches or jewelry, and avoid dark and deserted places. He recommends making a copy of your passport, remaining alert while walking home at night and not leaving your drinks unattended. “I have had numerous cases of people asking for help because they were extorted coming back from bars,” he said.

He added: “If you’re staying in a place that has a report of strikes or demonstrations, don’t go there. You’re a fish out of water.”

5 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING HOTEL XCARET MEXICO

“hotel xcaret mexico makes you feel like you’re in the middle of a tropical jungle theme park, not an all-inclusive resort”.

Our favorite way to travel is by enjoying the natural surroundings and local culture, which we don’t often get to experience at resorts. Last month we visited Hotel Xcaret Mexico with Air Canada Vacations and had an amazing taco-fuelled experience. It honestly changed the way we look at vacations as it has both of our favorite travel qualities and more. It immerses you in a world of adventure, Mexican culture, and all-inclusive fun!

Looking back, we wish someone has told us these tips before visiting, which is why we’re sharing them with you! The following are suggestions on things you can do, see, and eat all around the hotel. This is what you need to know before you visit Hotel Xcaret Mexico .

Take Time to Explore the Property (Pick up a Map)

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

The property is truly a park in itself with jungles, a winding river with coves and inlets, and tropical surprises around every corner. To maximize your time it’s best to plan so you cover the highlights during your stay. Our favourites included sunrise at the Catholic Church, kayaking the river, discovering waterslides, and walking along the jungle paths.

The lagoons and rivers wind in and around the property

For an authentic beach experience, take the far east swing bridge from the church, over the lagoon, on your way to the beach hammocks. Unlike the other side of the beach, which can be rocky, this side is semi-private, quiet, and gorgeous!

Ask for a map once you arrive at the hotel, you’ll find it helpful to reference later in your trip. I found the map most useful in finding where each photo station was around the property.

Take a look at the property from a bird’s eye view in the video below to get a better idea of its layout. And get a serious dose of wanderlust while you’re at it..

The Magical Wristband

From the moment we got our wristbands, we knew we were going to love them! They allow you to take pictures of yourself at photo stations around the hotel and all parks. You can find each ‘Xelfie’ photo station by using the hotel map.

You’ll get optimal camera angles without the hassle of carrying around bulky cameras or having to attempt your best photography skills. Simply tap your wristband on the photo circle, look towards the colourful ‘Xcaret Eye’, and say CHEESE! You can purchase the digital photo packages at the end of your visit for a reasonable price (beginning at $58.99 for all photos of 2 people at both the hotel and 1 park).

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

Stop digging through your pockets and beach bag looking for your dreaded room key.  That won’t happen at Hotel Xcaret Mexico as your wristband serves a few purposes, another being your room key.

It’s also waterproof and has an adjustable strap, which allows you to take it off when you need to. I appreciated this feature while I showered and slept, much more comfortable if you ask me!

All-Fun InclusiveŸ

What is All-Fun InclusiveÂź? Not only are your accommodations, drinks, and food included, but so are your excursions! More than the traditional all-inclusive resort, Hotel Xcaret Mexico goes beyond and includes all 9 of their parks and tours in your stay. That means you could visit a park every day for a week and still not visit them all!

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

This also includes your shuttles to and from all parks, with rides leaving every 20 minutes from the hotel lobby. Walk a few hundred yards east from the lobby and keep your eye out for the big pink Xcaret bus.

Xcaret Park

We visited the emblematic Xcaret Park which has over 50 different attractions to choose from. It’s a park that renews the spirit of Mexican culture and folklore through food, exhibitions, and celebration.

Grab an Xcaret passport to keep track of where you’ve visited and try to explore them all! There are 37 different Xelfie stations here and we hardly got through them during our visit. Remember to use the coloured lines on the pavement to guide you through each area.

Xenses Park

Prepare to have your senses come alive as the Xenses Park is filled with optical illusions and fantastic Instagram opportunities.  This is the only half-day park available and you can’t miss it!

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

Thoughtfully designed, you immediately enter into the pinwheel room that’s a colourful sensory celebration of rainbow colors. There are two circuits of activity from here and over 50 mind-blowing attractions, games, and sensory scenarios to cover. Our favourites included the town where you didn’t know up from down, and the Xitric garden where you could drink lemonade directly from a tree!

Everything’s Included

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is a one-stop shop for a complete vacation experience. When you book with Air Canada Vacations , it includes your flight, hotel accommodation, all transfers and 1 free checked bag per person. Your package even includes your meals at each park plus a beer at Xcaret Park and both tequila and beer at Xoximilco Park.

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

The All-Fun InclusiveŸ perks don’t end at the parks, as you’ll also enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, tennis, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, and access to the kids & family club during your stay.

The Food at Hotel Xcaret Mexico

There are ten restaurants, eight bars, and a room service menu that we didn’t even scratch the surface of. We’ve become passionate lovers of local foods since visiting Mexico several times over the past few years. So it’s no surprise that we loved the authentic flavours of the Mexican buffet, Mercado de la Merced. Most mornings you’d find us here filling our plates with salsa verde, succulent chicken and beef tacos, and sipping on rich Mexican coffee.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Main Buffet Restaurant

For lunch, we loved the carefree vibe of Las Playas, which was tucked under the main pool, and directly in front of the lagoon. There are beautiful swings to sip your cocktail on and tables in the sand so you can sink your toes in and truly relax. Each dish we enjoyed here was an elevated version of a classic and we enjoyed it so much that we came back every day to try something new on the menu.

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

The only problem we had during our stay was trying to choose what to eat for dinner. Our most noteworthy meals were the Teppanyaki table at Xin-Gao, dinner & show in the theatre, and a special dinner at Ha Restaurant.

Shadi was elated to discover the taco stand that was set-up in front of the main buffet each evening. You’d often see a line-up in front of this famous cart which also included fresh cilantro and lime. There are no frills here, just authentic, generous flavour. We had a second dinner at this stand on the regular, they were addicting!

Another great find was the fruit stand that’s set up in the archway in front of the main pool. With so many fresh options at my convenience, I made it my goal to try a new fruit here each day.

We walked by Cantina Los Faroles a few times but never had the chance to try their menu. We did, however, return after 11 pm to enjoy the nightlife and lantern light show around the bar.

Needless to say, we think you should add these restaurants to your culinary bucket list at Hotel Xcaret Mexico.

Sustainability & Mexican Culture

Everything at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is made with sustainability and the preservation of the Mexican culture in mind. All elements of the resort are acquired with fair trade and are locally sourced. Many of the items around the hotel are also handmade, such as the hand pillows, tiles, and hammocks.

As sustainability is a focus of the hotel, many things in the hotel are made of sustainable materials, such as the pillows, duvets, and coffee pods. The coffee pods are biodegradable and actually made of corn! My favourite feature of our room was that all of the amenities were eco-friendly. The materials are locally sourced AND good for the environment. The grape lotion smelled and felt amazing and I want to buy it by the tub!

From the hotel’s eco-integrative design to their contributions to the local economy, Hotel Xcaret Mexico constantly demonstrates its promise to practice sustainable tourism.

Bonus! Book With Air Canada Vacations

As Air Canada Vacations ambassadors, we travel with Air Canada Vacations often. What we love the most about booking our vacations with them is that we literally don’t have to stress about any travel details.  Air Canada Vacations takes care of everything from the flights, hotel, and even at destination transfers.

They’ve been around for over 35 years, so you’ve got peace of mind.  You also don’t have to pay for your first checked bag when you book a package with Air Canada Vacation (which we really appreciate). Awesome article guys! We are traveling with Air Canada Vacations this coming trip! Thanks for the heads up on the taco stand, that wasn’t there this past March.

Thanks Craig! We are all about that taco life my friend, glad to help out. Love that you traveled with Air Canada Vacations when you returned! Where are you guys headed next?

I was Hotel Xcaret January 2018. I just booked our second trip today! I’m so excited to return and see the changes. I booked with Air Canada Vacations. I noticed you said the first checked bag is free, is that still the case?

That’s so wonderful to hear Laurie. We want to go back to Xcaret soon too. To answer your question, YES! When you book your vacation package with Air Canada Vacations your first checked bag is always included!

I’m a little confused – all of the parks admission fees are included in the package price for the Xcaret Park?

Hi Molly! Yes ALL of the parks admission fees are included in the price package for Hotel Xcaret (no matter who you book your vacation with). AND when you book with Air Canada Vacations, you pay one price that includes all accommodations (and park admissions), transfers to and from the airport, round-trip flights and your first checked bag free too. It’s a great cost-effective option for the adventurous traveler!

Very helpful read, thank you! Not sure if I missed it, but does anyone know if you have to be in a Fuego from to experience that awesome rooftop pool with glass bridge?

We’re so happy to hear that you’ve found our post helpful Michelle! Yes you must be booked in a Fuego room category to have access to the adults-only rooftop pool. It’s such a great perk with stellar views. We received great service up there and would absolutely recommend it. Thanks 🙂

My husband and I just got back from cancun in February! We purchased a go Cancun pass since we did not stay near Xcaret, we stayed in the zona hotelera. We went to xplor by xcaret! It was an absolute blast, we did 7 ziplines, water rafting, enjoyed their lunch buffet! They also have a river swim and a hammock zipline! It was incredible to say the least!

When you have gone to Xcaret, and flown Air Canada, was the carrier Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge? How was the flight to Cancun and home?

We flew Air Canada Rouge on this particular trip Stephen. The flight both there and back was great! No delays and great service.

This is great!!! How do you book the tours and reservations ahead of time?

You can attend any of the parks at your leisure with no reservations required. Just hop on the bus to whichever park you want as they run from the hotel each hour. Or you can even take the boat right at the resort, its right down the path from the children’s area with the Octopus slide.

How to get to Xcaret? Transportations options and maps

March 16, 2021

Visiting Cancun and Riviera Maya is easy and simple

here we show you how to do it .

Without a doubt, one of the most popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean is Xcaret , famous for the Xcaret MĂ©xico Espectacular show, its majestic underground rivers, and its varied Mexican cuisine.

Its shows, optional activities, beaches, and coves undoubtedly make it a must-see for your next vacation. But first, where is Xcaret park located? This incredible place has a privileged location between Xplor Park, Xenses Park , Hotel Xcaret MĂ©xico , and just a few minutes from downtown Playa del Carmen in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

These are just some of the reasons why this Mexican paradise has become the favorite destination of many travelers. If you come to visit Quintana Roo and want to go to Xcaret, here you’ll find ways to get there from Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

How to get to Xcaret

Transportation

In the YucatĂĄn Peninsula, there is a bus line called ADO or Autobuses de Oriente, which provides its services to practically any destination in the Mexican Caribbean, including Xcaret park. Direct transportation to the park is available from any of the three cities I mentioned above.

You can purchase your tickets through the website, mobile application, or directly at the ticket office. If you buy your tickets in advance, you can get discounts.

  • You will travel in grand tourism buses with all services.
  • You won’t worry about driving.
  • You will be able to sleep during the journey to Xcaret park.
  • They are very punctual with their departure times.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Service hours are very few.
  • They usually take a little longer due to their controlled speed.
  • You will have to go to the terminal on your own.

Xcaret Group included transportation

When purchasing any of the admissions offered by Xcaret park, you can add your transportation from your hotel. This is a roundtrip service, just make sure your hotel is on the pick-up list or check the closest pickup point.

  • They will pick you up at the lobby of your hotel or the closest point.
  • You can rest during the journey to the park.
  • You will have a guide who can answer all your questions.
  • You will be safe with Grupo Xcaret’s transportation.
  • It will be slow since it will make several stops until you arrive at the Transfer Central.
  • You must respect the assigned schedule of your pickup so as not to lose it.

  • You decide the time of your arrival and departure from Xcaret park.
  • You can visit other destinations if you wish.
  • You can plan your visit with friends or family.
  • You will have to drive day and night and you may feel exhausted.
  • If you do not know the route, you can get lost, but nowadays this is almost impossible.
  • As you can see, there are several ways to get to Xcaret so feel free to choose the most appropriate for your trip.

How to get to Xcaret?

If you are in Cancun , you must go to the bus terminal located on Tulum Avenue. It is a well-known point of the city, and you can get there by taxi or public transport.

If you are in Playa del Carmen , you must get to the ADO bus terminal located on Fifth Avenue, which is also known as the Tourist Terminal. It is very close to the dock from where the ferries departures to Cozumel Island.

From Tulum , you also must locate the ADO bus terminal, which is smaller compared to the previous two stations and is on the main avenue.

With this option, you only need to get up early, have a rich breakfast and go down to your lobby to wait for one of our operators to pick you up on the official Xcaret transportation.

In case your hotel is not on the pickup list, we have options to pick you up at the point closest to your hotel.

Besides, Grupo Xcaret guarantees that your trip will be safe since the 360° Xafety protocol is applied in all buses. Some of these actions include cleaning the buses on each of the routes, taking the temperature, the application of antibacterial gel and the use of a mask as requirements before you get in.

Open your favorite maps application: Google Maps, Here We Go by Nokia, Maps.Me or Waze and place Xcaret in the search bar to find the ideal route to the park.

If you are in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, you only need to take the road to Tulum. In the case of Cancun, the trip to Xcaret takes 90 minutes. From Playa del Carmen, you will arrive in 20 minutes.

If you are in Tulum, you must take the federal highway towards Playa del Carmen and you will be in Xcaret in 50 minutes.

Extra option!

Being close to Playa del Carmen, you will have another option to get to Xcaret: taxi. You can find taxis near the ADO bus terminal on Fifth Avenue.

  • You can get to the park faster.
  • You choose the time you want to arrive.
  • You will be comfortable.
  • If you travel on your own, it could be expensive.
  • It may take a while to get a taxi.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Questions & Answers

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

I understand there is a lot of crime in your area. How do I keep my family safe and my belongings while there

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

I am not worried about crime at xcaret. I am worried that the hotel itself is going down hill. All the food and drinks were subpar and they’re better restaurants the food was over seasoned and lacked any kind of originality which the hotel prides itself on their Covid protocols as far as keeping everybody wearing masks and hand sanitizing is good but beware beware beware if someone in your party comes down with Covid you are now paying $800 a night for room service that comes cold and soggy one of our party tested positive and my daughter and I were both negative she left the hotel we tested again we were still negative they would not let us out of the room finally when I was able to get some thing arranged for us they would not let us come through the lobby and would not let us leave the room it was 45 minutes that my cab was waiting for me downstairs because they would not let us out

Lol it seems like someone is getting money to say this...the accident that my wife had happened inside the hotel in La Cantina bar.. so my point I tried to make is that the hotel Xcaret IS NOT SAFE! The hotel should habe not allowed glass on the second floor specially in a bar! On top of this there are not cameras in the second floor.. thank you for your comment though.

While there has been some unfortunate crime / violence in the Cancun area, I can certainly attest to the safety that Hotel Xcaret provides. Not only is it 50 miles / 90 kilometers south of Cancun, but the gated entrance and resort security is plenty adequate to shield you from any random crime / violence. Bottom line....you keep yourself safe by staying at a resort like Hotel Xcaret!

Park Xcaret Tips & Tricks Before Your Visit

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

Before you visit Xcaret Park , it’s important to understand what it is and what it isn’t. You can think of XCARET! Park kind of like a Mexico theme park, but instead of focusing on illustrated characters and thrill rides the attractions are centered around Mayan culture and YucatĂĄn peninsula wildlife. That doesn’t mean it’s all fake: the Mayan ruins within the park are genuine remnants of the ancient seaport town, while the cemetery contains recreations of unique and colorful graves from around Mexico. Visiting Xcaret isn’t a substitute for exploring the Yucatan peninsula but it’s an extremely fun way to get a taste of the Indigenous culture and nature. It’s part theme park, part eco park, and part water park. A good way to describe it is the Xcaret adventure park!

Expect crowds, especially during holiday periods. We visited the week before Christmas and it felt packed. The crowd was a mix of Mexicans and Americans with a smattering of other nationalities thrown in. It’s popular with everyone who vacation in the area, especially those visiting Riviera Maya with kids! If your travel crew includes any small children, be sure to explain to them how important it is to stick together. If you’re blessed with a runner, you may need to use all the tricks up your sleeve!

Try to arrive as close to opening as possible – 8:30 as of this writing. It won’t be as crowded and you’ll be able to see and do more!

Xcaret Park Tickets

If possible, buy your tickets in advance rather than buying Xcaret tickets at the door. We didn’t because we’d had some stomach upset in the family and weren’t confident everyone would be up for such a big day, and it cost us an extra $10 per adult and $5 per kid. Ouch! Sometimes you can even get additional promotions here. In addition, the line to enter was quite long – about 20 minutes. There are also additional ticket booths inside, and you can try your luck with those to see if they’re faster.

Annoyingly, you have to walk alllllllll the way through the gift shop to enter. This is an easy place to get separated, especially with small kids. If you have young ones who can’t resist the power of a souvenir, you may want to carry them. Just power through and find the exit so you can get to enjoying the park!

What to Bring to Xcaret Park

Prepare to walk a ton! We clocked about 15k steps. I was fine in my favorite flip flops because they’re very supportive but if you have grumpy feet, wear something comfortable.

Wear your swim suit instead of (or under) regular clothes. My daughter and I wore two-piece suits topped with a rash guard and shorts, while the boys wore trunks and rash guards. That saved us time so that we didn’t have to change for water activities. We packed everyone’s dry clothes and our travel towels in these wet bags , so at the end of the day we had the perfect spot to store our wet swimsuits.

Bring sunscreen and bug repellant. We made it just fine with a single application of sunscreen, but if we’d spent more time in the afternoon sun we probably would have reapplied. We didn’t find the mosquitos too vicious but perhaps that’s because we preemptively wiped our legs down with these . They’re super handy and I just wish I’d done another round in the late afternoon!

There are water bottle filling stations everywhere. Just bring one bottle – I recommend this insulated bottle , which we bring everywhere!

If you plan to experience the underground rivers (which you should) I recommend bringing a waterproof pouch for your smartphone . You’ll definitely want Xcaret park photos and videos of the experience!

Xcaret Activities: The Best Things To Do In Xcaret

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

There’s a giant Xcaret park map when you enter with a QR code. Open it and save it to your phone. You’ll need it! We found the park to be pretty confusing to navigate, even with the map. There are signs everywhere but they don’t always work out exactly as you plan. We managed to get ourselves lost a few times unfortunately and definitely burned some much-needed time that way.

The different zones are broken up by colored lines on the ground. Our recommended Xcaret park itinerary is to start your day with the white line, which takes you to the Mayan Village (including the birds, butterflies and jaguars). Pro tip: start with the aviary when you get here. There’s strong directionality to it and it feeds you in to the butterflies. Of course don’t miss the cultural attractions in this section as well! Next, try to find your way to the blue line for aquatic creatures. Then hook up the the green line (Playa) to make your way to the “snack bar.” After lunch, go back toward the park entrance to begin the underground river.

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

Speaking of snack bar
clearly the definition isn’t the same as in America. This is a sit-down eatery with waiters bringing hot food and cold drinks. It can be extremely hard to find, but is worthwhile. Why? Because in the blue section you’ll encounter an extremely crowded buffet restaurant that charges $35 USD per person (same for kids) for a crowded and heavy buffet lunch. By contrast, the snack bar offers a la carte option like chicken fajitas for $10 USD and a hamburger for $12 USD. It also has a fantastic view out to the water! It can be hard to find but it’s worthwhile if you’re put off by Xcaret food prices; just follow the green line and if you aren’t sure, ask a staff member. Note that guests of Hotel Xcaret have access to the buffet for free and it’s also included in the Xcaret Plus package.

Don’t plan to do everything, you’d really need two days for that. The Mexico Xcaret park offers far too much to fit in one day! We plan to return again a different year to experience even more. For example, our kids were really excited to do the cacao workshop, but it’s a 45 minute experience and the timing wouldn’t have worked out for us this time. We didn’t make it anywhere near the Children’s World either!

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

One activity we deliberately skipped (and we hope you will too) is Xcaret’s extensive dolphin encounter program. They have several options that range from hanging out in the water with dolphins in a group of 10 people to actually riding on the dolphins. We don’t consider ourselves zealots, but can’t get on board with that kind of forced up-close animal interaction. If you’re on the fence, please research carefully before you book one of these experiences. Our kids were pretty upset to see the dolphins being handled by other visitors.

We brought our own snorkel gear, but honestly the snorkeling inlet (near the snack bar, in the green section) didn’t look that great. It’s also extremely crowded and when we walked to the steps fully geared up we could see that there were very few fish. We didn’t end up using our gear despite lugging it around all day. When we return to Xcaret in the future, I’ll consider the add-on snorkel tour that goes out to the reef. We’re probably just spoiled by all of our experiences snorkeling on Oahu and Big Island but we couldn’t get excited about this one, and our snorkel tour on Isla Mujeres the following week was a much better experience.

The family favorite was the underground river. If your kids are school age on up (or you’re going without kids), don’t miss this! It worked well as our last daytime activity, but you really need to allow yourself tons of time for it. We went from beginning (near the park entrance) to end (right back at the playa) and wouldn’t have done it any other way but in total all of the preparation, swimming and then changing afterwards will take you at least an hour and a half – it took us a little longer even since we lingered.

You need to go down to the river entrance first to deposit your belongings. Go to the cashier in the center and pay to rent a bag and fins. Trust me, you want the fins! Life jackets are free. Additional snorkel gear isn’t necessary. You’ll put everything you don’t want to take in the water in the giant bag – we just put our whole backpack in there along with our flip flops. Keep your phone with you in its waterproof pouch ! They gave us a locker key but we didn’t bother with it, as we had the only key to the bag (Ronnie wore it around his neck). Thankfully the bag gets transported up to the end of the river so that you’re met with your flip flops and towels! When you’re done there are changing rooms through the gift shop, and feel free to enjoy the stunning views at the top from a hammock while you warm up.

At least during our visit, most of the live performances were late in the day – around 5-5:30pm. Unfortunately that means you’ll have to choose what you want to see. Those shows do get busy, so you may have to jockey for position if you don’t arrive in advance. We opted to watch the horse exhibition, which was wonderful and featured live mariachis and bilingual narration.

Xcaret Mexico Espectacular

Speaking of jockeying for position
the evening spectacular begins at 7, but I recommend that your group starts heading that direction after you finish watching the live performance. Catch a glimpse of the horses as they cool down, poke into the art museum and church and slowly make your way to the massive open-air theater. There are costumed performers along the way showcasing Mayan costumes and music, so take your time as you go. Unless you’ve purchased dinner or an Xclusive ticket, seating is first-come, first-served.

If you don’t purchase dinner, there are snacks available for purchase as you enter the theater. Most of them weren’t that great (especially the paletas and nachos), so I’d save your money. The popcorn is a solid option and you can buy it from your seat with pesos before the show begins.

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

The evening spectacular at Xcaret eco theme park runs 7-9pm, which is prime dinner time at most resorts. Even if your resort serves food until 10, staying until the end of the show guarantees a massive crowd upon departure – through the park, the gift shop and the parking lot. I can’t imagine being able to stay for the entire show and still arriving in time for dinner. We left shortly after intermission during the state-by-State cultural performances. I was sad to miss some of them, but we walked through the positively empty park and faced no challenges getting our car out. We made it back to our hotel just in time for dinner! Next time we go, I’d book the dinner package and stay for the evening to avoid stressing about it.

Xcaret in Cancun Mexico: Our Review

After spending more time in Mexico’s Mayan Riviera area this winter we decided to check out some of the nearby eco-parks. Our kids loved our last visit to Xcaret  Cancun so much that we decided to go back again.

There’s plenty to see and do at Xcaret, which is just outside Playa del Carmen, including floating down the underground river, lounging on hammocks by the lagoon, enjoying a buffet lunch, touring the aviary, checking out the many animals and marine life as well as all the cultural centers and the huge Xcaret Mexico Espactacular night show.

Important tip : If you’re looking for the best price, we’ve found the best discounts online through Xcaret’s website , where you can get 10-15% off booking at the gate.

Since it’s been a couple of years and a few things have changed, including some great new attraction additions, we’re writing a brand new review of Xcaret in Cancun Mexico , with plenty of information to make your visit easier and more affordable.

In this Xcaret review, we’ll tell you:

  • How to get to Xcaret from Cancun or Playa del Carmen
  • The best things to see and do at Xcaret
  • Tips for making your Xcaret visit easier
  • How to get the best price on your Xcaret tickets

Before we get to our Xcaret review, let’s take a quick look at how to get to Xcaret from Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

Xcaret Transportation Information

Xcaret is 37 miles (60 km) south of Cancun , 4 miles (6 km) south of Playa del Carmen , 20 miles (30 km) north of Akumal and 34 miles (55 km) north of Tulum .

We’ve spent a lot of time in the area, including several weeks in Cancun , and months at a time as a family in Playa del Carmen .

By far, the simplest way to get from Cancun to Xcaret is to get a transportation included package from Xcaret. They’ll pick you up at your hotel, drive you to the front door at Xcaret, and pick you up after the evening show to whisk you back to Cancun. You can also get transportation to Xcaret from Playa del Carmen and practically anywhere in the Riviera Maya. The cost is currently about $27 USD for return transportation from your hotel, however that varies on which package you go with.

Tip! If you book online through this link  you can get up to a 15% discount on your Xcaret transportation and admission from Cancun. Click here to check prices.

Click here to see options further down for driving yourself to Xcaret, taking the bus to Xcaret, or taking a taxi to Xcaret.

Our Xcaret Cancun review

First, we’ll talk about our trip and what Xcaret has to offer, and then give you some helpful tips to make your trip easier (and hopefully save you some money, as well).

Animals everywhere!

Our kids are huge animal lovers, and Xcaret doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

There are plenty of animals scattered throughout the park, including a huge variety of butterflies and birds like parrots, macaws and flamingos. There’s also tons of animals like monkeys, jaguars, panthers and deer as well as marine animals such as stingrays, sea turtles, sharks, manatees, and a sizable aquarium full of colorful fish and jelly fish. A lot of the animals, like the giant tapir above, are native to the area so it’s nice to get to see them up close as well.

Aquarium with many different fish

Be sure to set aside a good half hour to walk through the Xcaret aquarium. We’ve seen quite a few aquariums worldwide, from the wonderful Vancouver Aquarium to the Aquarium in Lisbon, Portugal , and we still enjoyed Xcaret’s display with over 500 coral reef structures, hundreds of colorful fish and varied marine life.

Inside, besides for the fish exhibits, there are shark and jellyfish exhibits as well a touch pool for the little ones complete with starfish and sea cucumbers.

Outside exhibits house giant sting rays, a manatee lagoon, and, our favorite, sea turtles. Not only can you see baby sea turtles, but large adult ones as well. The sea turtle lagoon where they stay is gorgeous and we could sit and watch the sea turtles swimming around the natural pool for hours.

Both times we visited Xcaret, the bat cave was a huge hit with our kids. Unlike most bat exhibits, this one is in a real, underground cave. To see the bats you enter via a long set of stairs and stand in semi-darkness until your eyes adjust to the lack of light. Once your eyes are acclimatized, you realize you’re in a real bat cave with live bats flying around you.

Bird aviary

Xcaret’s bird aviary sanctuary is gorgeous, with waterfalls and ramping pathways on multiple levels. We visited this as one of our last stops in Xcaret, but I really wish we’d had time to linger more. There are over 1,500 birds in here, most housed in one giant aviary, with verdant vegetation and blooming tropical flowers everywhere. It’s well worth an hour or so to visit if you’re a bird lover.

Butterfly Pavilion

Right next to the Bird Aviary is Xcaret’s Butterfly Pavilion. Here you can see 20 different species of butterflies in one of the largest butterfly enclosures in the world. Similar to the aviary, there are pathways and waterfalls aplenty, as well as a hatching area complete with explanations of for all stages of the butterfly life cycle.

Monkey Island

Xcaret features both spider monkeys and howler monkeys in the park. Though they tend to quiet down in the heat of the day, you can see them climbing around in the morning and right before dusk.

Xcaret Underground River

One of the most popular attractions at Xcaret eco theme park is their underground river. The river winds its way through naturally formed caverns and caves under Xcaret. The water is a crystal clear aquamarine, and you can even find little fish along the bottom. Floating from beginning to end can take about an hour, however there are numerous locations along the way to get out if you want to.

Tip! We found that the water got a little cool for our eight-year old after a while and we decided to exit around the 3/4 mark. Because of that, it’s a good idea to rent or bring flippers to speed up your journey (we didn’t have any) since the water slows down in certain areas and the flippers will help you along. If you get a Xcaret Plus pass , snorkeling equipment is included in your ticket price. Life jackets are free (and mandatory) for everybody.

At the start of the underground river, Xcaret staff put your belongings in a duffel bag, and transport it to the end of the lazy river for you to pick up. You’ll get a waterproof label with your number on it for pickup, and the duffel is stored in an area with Xcaret staff at the end of the river. You’ll need to show the number to pick up the duffel.

We did find that the duffel bags were slung around and piled on top of each other. If you have any breakable equipment or valuables, you may want to rent a locker instead of using the free duffel bags. Because we were going to the lazy river, but we had our DSLR camera with us, we elected to use the secure locker area. It’s $5 for the day and there is also a $10 key deposit that is returned once you leave.

Tip! You may want to bring water shoes or waterproof sandals for the Underground River. Charles found that the rocks along the underground river were a bit hard on his feet, and sandals or water shoes would make standing up in, and getting out of, the underground river much easier. I was wearing my trusty waterproof Keen sandals  (with an enclosed toe), so I had no problems.

There are showers and washrooms at the main exit point of the underground river, however it’s a long walk back to the rental lockers if you need to pick up any of your other personal belongings. It’s definitely a good idea to throw some sandals or shoes in the provided duffel bag if you elect to go barefoot or use flippers down the river for your return walk.

Lagoon and hammocks

Xcaret has a gorgeous location on the Caribbean sea, with a calm-water lagoon between the beach and jungle areas at Xcaret. There are lots of hammocks along the beach to the right of the lazy river exit, as well as lounge chairs and tables set out around the inner lagoon.

We loved lounging in the hammocks on the white sand, watching the little blowhole spray and looking out over the ocean. There’s also a protected lagoon for swimming nearby and some fantastic photo opportunities all along the water.

Xcaret Children’s World

Xcaret’s new Children’s World area is lots of fun for kids aged 0 to 12. There’s a playground, a small splash park, a small beach, a parakeet habitat and a cenote (natural freshwater pool). We found the cenote to be a little full of leaves the day we visited, but otherwise looked like a great way to cool down in the hot afternoon.

Our eight and eleven year old both loved the Children’s World Secret Adventure area, which has four water slides, hanging bridges, a waterfall and lots of rope climbing. It’s like a mini adventure for kids and is a good distance from nearly everything else in the park so it’s a fairly quiet area.

Parents can walk alongside on a separate path around the activities, but the adventure area is meant for 4-12 year olds and most adults won’t fit through the ropes even if they wanted to join in.

Note: To get the most out of the area, kids should wear water shoes, otherwise their feet could get sore on the ropes and rock walkways. Ours didn’t have any and had to be a lot more careful where they stepped and while playing in the water than other kids we saw wearing some. The cenote is a natural pool and as such, there are rocks and sharp areas along the sides as well if they decide to explore a bit.

The Children’s World zone also has it’s own washroom and a small store complete with drinks, small snacks and beach toys. There’s also a small sandy area for the little ones and lots of seating for everyone in the shade. The children’s area is not near the ocean side of Xcaret and is off to the side, far away from the crowd. Expect a bit of a walk getting to it.

Xcaret restaurants, buffets and snacks

Xcaret natural adventure park has many snack areas and several buffet restaurants.

Tip: We found it a much better value to get Xcaret Plus  than to pay for the buffet and flippers separately.

Both times we’ve visited Xcaret, we’ve eaten at the largest buffet restaurant, La Laguna. There’s a wide variety of food there, and it seems to be restocked quickly. Our kids loved the desserts and the soft serve ice cream bar.

The first time we were at Xcaret, we ate around 2 pm and it was quiet. On our second visit, we ate right at 12:30, and it was very busy. Servers were constantly re-stocking the buffet, though we only needed to wait ten minutes for items to be refilled, as the restaurant looked to be at full capacity. I’d suggest eating slightly before or after noon to make sure the buffet was less busy.

Soft drinks, coffee and tea are included in the buffet price, but you’ll pay extra for fancy drinks or additional alcohol at the bar.

Here’s a list of the restaurants at Xcaret.

This is the restaurant at the beach area, where you can get a Mexican snack or a Caribbean buffet.

La PenĂnsula

La Peninsula specializes in seafood and offers a buffet.

A large restaurant near the center overlooking the Jaguar exhibit, La Luguna is an international buffet, with plenty of pasta, pizza and sushi.

A smaller restaurant near the park entrance, La Cocina offers Mexican snacks and is a great place to sit and watch the daily equestrian show while enjoying a cold beverage.

La OrquĂdea

This restaurant offers a la carte breakfasts and snacks.

If you’re a carnivore, this is the buffet restaurant that specializes in meats.

El Manglar is only open during high season, and focuses on seafood.

This is a restaurant for private events, like weddings, that seats up to 500.

Mexico Espectacular Dinner

This is where you’ll sit if you opt to buy supper with your Mexico Espectacular night show tickets.

As well as the above, there are many other smaller snack areas and bars all throughout Xcaret Park Cancun.

Cultural activities in Xcaret

If you’re interested in Mayan or Mexican culture, there’s a lot to see at Xcaret. The big draw, of course is the Mexico Espectacular show at night (more on that later), but there are also many interesting smaller attractions in the park like watching the high flying Voladores.

Unfortunately, we always seem to be in a hurry to finish and grab supper before the nightly show when we visit the Mayan villages and colonial Mexican areas. It’s a shame, because the traditional Mayan mini villages, with displays of traditional houses and cooking, look interesting.

The Mexican graveyard, next to the bird aviary, is colorful and gives a glimpse into Mexican culture, though I do wish there had been more signs explaining its significance.

We saw the equestrian show on our last trip to Xcaret, and it was well done and interesting. I suggest you check out our previous Xcaret review if you want to read up a bit more on the traditional aspects of the park.

Some of the cultural highlights in Xcaret include the Mayan archaeological sites found throughout the park, the Hacienda Henequenera with its 19th century story, the views from the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel overlooking the bay and the Mayan Village with its fascinating take of pre-Hispanic living.

There’s also a chocolate cafe, and chocolate and coffee workshops. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have time to visit them on this trip, but it’s high on my list for our next visit!

Nightime Xcaret Mexico Espectacular show

This is a huge draw for Xcaret, and it’s easy to see why. The show is two hours long and it has a cast of hundreds, colorful and varied costumes, plus a spectacular lighting show. The performances showcase Mexican culture and history, from the time of the ancient Mayans, through the arrival of the Spanish, to modern Mexican culture and music.

You can buy tickets for the night Espectacular show only, if you don’t want to visit the Xcaret park. The Xcaret at night includes admission to Xcaret from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm so you can see a few exhibits before the big show.

Honestly, the full Xcaret admission is only about $20 more than Xcaret at night, and you get a lot more, including admission for the full day.

Click here for our link  to get up to 10-15% off admission to Xcaret.

You can also add the  Xcaret Xclusivo to get a reserved seat at the Grand Tlachco Theater, a selection of dried fruits, one bottle of sparkling wine, soft drinks for kids and personalized attention.

We’ve been to see the night Espectacular show twice, and enjoyed it both times. It’s fun for adults and kids, and both our kids watched the entire two hour show without fidgeting in their seats. It may have helped that we fed them cotton candy from the snack shops outside.

Tip! Head over to the night show by 6 pm if you want to be near the center lower down for a better view.

Xcaret Amenities

There are plenty of photo ops throughout the park. When you enter, you’re given wristbands that are tied to your ticket. Throughout the park there are locations that allow you to scan in your wristband and take a picture with fixed cameras. The online system keeps track of your photos throughout the day. There are also photographers on site at various locations, with distinctive yellow shirts and plenty of signs indicating they work with Xcaret.

At the end of your visit, you stop by a kiosk, and can get all your photos. The cost onsite is $100 USD for digital photos of your entire group, or you can opt to pre-pay for them as part of your admission.

We found the onsite cost for photos a bit pricey for us, so we just used our own phone cameras at their photo op locations (since they’re so well placed). That said, there are plenty of photo stations throughout the park and it saves you from having to carry your camera throughout the day so they can be a great way to keep your memories alive once you leave the park.

Tip! The best deal for photos is online, where you can buy a photo pass with your park tickets  for around $59 USD. Even better, that photopass covers ALL the photos for up to a group of 10. You can get details on the photopass here .

There is no shortage of souvenirs at Xcaret, ranging from T-shirts to stuffed animals to magnets and postcards.

Pick up your souvenirs before the nightly Mexico Espectacular show. We were busy during the day, so we decided to pick up a small souvenir for Jordan on our way out of the night show.

Unfortunately, after the Espectacular show, the gift shop was so packed with people leaving for the front gates that we decided it wasn’t worth the wait. It would have been much easier to pick up a souvenir during the day when the gift shop was quieter.

Need a break?

Xcaret is a lot of fun, and it’s also a lot of physical activity like walking and swimming. Our favorite place to take a rest are the hammocks on the beach, which are a beautiful place to relax for a while. However, if you have little ones, the new Children’s Area is a great place to unwind away from the crowds and in the shade.

Xcaret wants to encourage using biodegradable sunscreen. You can deposit your regular sunscreen at a booth when you get there and they give you biodegradable samples for free. Be sure to remember to grab your own sunscreen on the way out. You’ll need to show the claim ticket they give you.

Lockers are by the Xcaret Plus zone. The cost for lockers is 100 pesos (about $5 USD at the time of writing), with a 100 peso deposit fee for the key. There are changing booths in the locker area, along with benches and shade. Because we were going to the lazy river, and had our DSLR camera with us, we elected to use the secure locker area.

Unfortunately we didn’t have a chance to check out the Xcaret Spa, but it definitely looked inviting. It would be a great way to spend a few hours away from the kids and be pampered so maybe next time!

While we were there, we happened to see a wedding by the lagoon at Xcaret! It’s a gorgeous setting, and I would have loved to see more, but unfortunately we had to leave for the evening show. You can contact customer support if you’re thinking of having a wedding at Xcaret to find out what kind of services they offer.

Xcaret Admission Plans

Xcaret plus.

Regular (Basic) Xcaret admission doesn’t include lockers, flippers, or any food (but it does include life jackets for the underground river).

When you get an  Xcaret Plus admission , you get lockers, flippers, snorkel and mask, towels, and a buffet meal, as well as access to the Xcaret Plus locker area. It’s a good value if you’re planning to do the underground lazy river and eat at one of the buffet restaurants.

Your buffet meal includes one beer and unlimited beverages (soft drinks, flavored waters and coffee) while consuming food at the buffet.

The Xcaret Plus admission was $109 USD at the time of writing, while basic admission is $84. Both prices are the discounted online price you’ll pay, 21 or more days in advance, on the Xcaret website.

Xcaret Optional Activities

You can add on optional activities like SNUBA, the Adrenelina jet boat, the Mexico Espectacular Dinner, Dolphin Ride, Swim with Sharks, Stingrays Encounter, Sea Trek Stingrays and Adventure Kids, a children’s ray and shark encounter, when you buy your tickets online.

You can see all of Xcaret’s optional activities here .

Xcaret Total

The  Xcaret Total admission package , which will get you one optional activity from three Optional Activities: Adrenalina, Sea TrekÂź or SnubaÂź. You also get the lunch buffet and Xcaret Plus admission. This is a great deal if you’re already planning to check out one of these activities anyway.

See Xcaret Total prices here.

Xcaret Tips!

Xcaret is a big park, and planning a bit before your trip can help make it a lot more comfortable and fun for the whole family.

Plan your day

Xcaret is a huge place with lots of walking. We found that with kids, it just wasn’t possible to see and do everything we wanted in one day (though we came close!). You may want to make a list of must-see items, and do those first, to ensure you don’t run out of time.

Our must-see list this time included seeing the animals, checking out the aquarium, lounging in the hammocks, floating down the underground river and watching the Xcaret Espectacular Show.

Prepare for the heat

Even in Mexico’s cooler season, it’s hot. Make sure you wear lots of sunscreen, a hat, cover up, and drink lots of water or non-alcoholic liquids.

Wear comfortable shoes

Xcaret is big, so you’ll be doing a lot of walking, with some of it up and down stairs. Make sure your shoes are comfortable.

You may also want to bring water shoes or waterproof sandals. These will make standing up in, and getting out of, the underground river and some of the play areas much easier.

Xel-ha vs Xcaret

We get a lot of questions as to whether Xcaret or Xel-Ha  is best for kids. While Xcaret is a huge park with an underground river and lagoon, it also has a lot of space devoted to aquarium, cultural and animal displays. Xel-Ha’s focus is much more on water activities and adventure, with snorkeling, zip lines over the water, caving, cliff jumping into the water, rope swings, and more.

It very much depends on your children’s level of activity and adventure, but parents of children under six, or kids who aren’t as comfortable in the water, will probably enjoy the activities at Xcaret more than Xel-Ha . Teenagers or those kids who crave wilder adventures might prefer Xel-Ha however, that said, no one is too young or too old to enjoy Xcaret.

Xenses vs Xcaret

If you only have a limited amount of time, you can read our Xenses review as well. (Subscribe to our newsletter above to be informed when that gets posted in the coming days).

Just across the road from Xcaret, Xenses is a unique park, owned by Xcaret, that delights in shocking your senses. If you have around 4 hours to spare (it’s also cheaper than Xcaret) and you’re looking for a different experience, then this newly built park might be for you.

I don’t want to spoil too much but if you like to experience new things, have a sense of humor and a sense of adventure then you’ll probably enjoy Xenses. It’s such a different take on a theme park that Xcaret vs Xenses can’t really be compared but to give you an idea, our older son actually prefers Xenses while our younger daughter says Xcaret is still the reigning champ of eco-parks.

How to get to Xcaret park cancun

We talked about this at the beginning of the article, but the easy button for getting from Cancun to Xcaret is to add transportation to your Xcaret ticket. They’ll pick you up at your hotel, drive you to the front door at Xcaret, and pick you up after the evening show and drive you back to Cancun.

If you book through this link  you can get up to a 15% discount on your Xcaret transportation and admission from Cancun.

Driving from Cancun to Xcaret

If you want to self drive, it’s an easy, flat road from Cancun past Playa del Carmen to Xcaret. The 50 miles (80 kilometres) should take you about 60 minutes from the Hotel Zone in Cancun. The highways are in good shape and signs are everywhere for Xcaret. Parking at Xcaret is free.

Tip! Whenever we rent a car, we quickly do a search on Expedia or another booking site to compare costs for different rental car companies.

Driving from Playa del Carmen to Xcaret

It’s just a short 15 minute (6 mile/10 kilometer) drive from Playa del Carmen to Xcaret. Just head south down Highway 307 (the main highway) and follow the signs to Xcaret. The turn is on the right from the highway but veers over. Parking is free.

Taxi from Cancun to Xcaret

Few people opt to take a taxi all the way from Cancun, because of the cost, which should run between 60 and 100 USD one way. You may also have trouble finding a taxi at the end of the day outside Xcaret that’s willing to drive you all the way back to Cancun.

Taxi from Playa del Carmen to Xcaret

From Playa del Carmen, it costs about 150 pesos ($8 USD) to get a taxi to Xcaret, and typically about 180 pesos ($9 USD) to get back. You can hail down a taxi anywhere in the city however if you’re having a hard time finding one you can try outside either of the ADO bus stops or outside any of the larger stores like Walmart or Chedraui. Like anywhere, it’s not a bad idea to agree on the price before you get in so there are no surprises when you get there.

Uber to Xcaret

Uber has just started operating in Cancun, but isn’t in Playa del Carmen as of mid-2017. You’ll need to check the Uber app to see if a driver is available to pick you up in Cancun for drop off at Xcaret, but you may need to arrange alternate transportation back to Cancun.

Bus from Cancun to Xcaret

You can take the ADO bus from Cancun Airport or the downtown Cancun bus terminal to Playa del Carmen. It’s about 114 Mexican pesos, or 6 USD).  Once in Playa del Carmen, you’ll need to transfer from the Playa del Carmen bus terminal to either the ADO bus that runs past Xcaret (ask at the terminal), or grab a collectivo (shared van/taxi) for about 3 USD on Calle 2.

However, and this is important, the collectivo will only drop you off at the highway. There’s a tunnel you need to walk through off the highway and then there should be an Xcaret bus waiting that will shuttle you to the park entrance. If for some reason the shuttle is not available, I estimate that it’s at least a 20 minute walk (1 mile) from the highway to the Xcaret entrance.

On the way back to Cancun or Playa del Carmen, you’ll need to grab the ADO bus back since there are no collectivos available then. It was a long wait, and we were all tired and worn out, so we took a taxi. It cost us about $10 USD to get back to Playa del Carmen from Xcaret via taxi.

We did Xcaret on our first visit to the area and Xel-ha a few years later. We loved them both and would highly recommend them to anyone, with or without kids. This is an awesome review and just makes me want to go back again.

hi, Thank you for the helpful tips. We will be staying at Ocean Riviera Paradise, which is north of Playa del Carmen downtown, but still part of PDC (zone 4 in the taxi map). If we buy transportation from xcaret, it will be $81 for 3 of us. So we are thinking taking taxi from hotel to xcaret, but afraid that we maybe over charged. Do you know what will be the approximate cost from our hotel to xcaret? Then after the dinner show, will it cost us more to go back to the hotel (more demands)? Thank you in advance

This is really helpful, thanks.

Hi Great tips thank you. Visiting in July and wondered if I buy the photo wristband package will it include photos from any extra activities I pay for such as swim with dolphins?

Hi. I really enjoyed reading your information. We were there 19 years ago and loved it there, but things have really changed since then. I am a bit unclear yet as to whether or not the evening show is included in the cost of the plus admission. Could you please let me know if the show is included or do we have to purchase a separate ticket for that? Thanks so much.

I really enjoy your post. Good tips and informations Thanks for sharing

The Ultimate Guide to Exploring Mexico's Xcaret National Park

Xcaret

Mexico’s Xcaret park in Cancun is an eco-extravaganza of things to see and do. Formerly an important Mayan port and town, Xcaret is the size of 40 football fields, and although it has been called Mexico’s Disney World, it’s unique for its insights into traditional Mayan culture and its luxurious location right on the beach.

Xcaret

Prices and Tickets

Entrance to the park is not cheap. Tickets usually cost just over US$100 for adults, and while there any many packages and optional activities available (including swimming with sharks, dolphin rides, and a traditional sweat lodge) most visitors find that the park’s regular activities keep them pretty busy for a day or even two days. The food here is expensive, so our advice is to buy the Xcaret-plus package that includes one meal while you are here. The package also includes free snorkel rental, which you will definitely want to have.

You can also buy tickets more cheaply online or direct through the Xcaret website. Do also remember to bring biodegradable sunscreen with you, or the park will force you to buy their own expensive brands. You can buy combo tickets that will give you access to both Xcaret and other adventure parks in the area such as Xplor , Xel-ha , Xenses , and Xoximilco .

There are several routes suggested by the park for different types of guest. The truth is that you don’t have to follow a route at all, but if you think your interests line up with a certain set of activities, it might be worth letting someone else plan your day. On the Ruta Del RĂo you will see all kinds of wild creatures up close, as well as archeological sites and an orchid museum; the Ruta Acuario allows you to see and interact with marine life such as sea turtles and sharks; the Ruta Playa focuses on the beach and snorkeling in the clear Caribbean waters; Ruta Delfines has more snorkeling options, lots of relaxing, and spa amenities; the Ruta Pueblo Maya engages guests with the history and culture of the area’s original inhabitants, including the games they played and the way they lived; and the Ruta MĂ©xico Espectacular offers Mexican folk art and the Virgin of Guadalupe Chapel.

Xcaret sea turtles

There are lots of eating options in the park, none particularly cheap, but many good. We suggest that you check out the traditional Mexican restaurants and skip the international food (you came to Mexico for the real thing, right?). El Manglar is probably the most highly recommended, but there are also La Cocina, and Cenas Mexico Espectacular, which is located right next to where the end-of-the-day show is held.

There are snack bars scattered throughout the park that sell cold drinks and simple stuff like hamburgers, and this makes for a slightly cheaper menu than at the full restaurants. You can’t bring food into the park, but you can re-enter if you would like to have a parking lot picnic and then come back. As mentioned above, paying for an Xcaret-plus ticket is a good idea if you know you are going to eat at least one meal here.

Unmissables

You won’t want to miss the incredible water activities available in the park: swimming in underground rivers, snorkeling in the Caribbean, even lying on the beach for a spell – the park’s location make it ideal for water babies of all ages. You also shouldn’t miss the end-of-the-day spectacle, which includes art, dance, music, and lights. It’s an homage to Mexico’s history, from prehistoric times through to today, using music and dance to illustrate the passage of time. The cost of the show is included in every ticket price and it starts at 7 p.m. daily.

End of the day show at Xcaret

Unusual Extras

Xcaret offers a few activities that you won’t be able to get at just any theme park . Though all their optional activities cost extra, if you are looking for a special something to do during your visit, look no further. The Xpá is located in a lagoon surrounded by underground rivers and you have the option of choosing between two different kinds of relaxing massage. The Xcaret Temescal is a ancient indigenous tradition that involves several ritual stages in a sweat lodge to cleanse your mind, body, and spirit, and a cooling swim afterwards. Xcaret also offer wine tasting in their wine cellar, with delicious Mexican wine and food pairings. Adrenalina is a high-speed boat ride out in the Caribbean. There are also a myriad of options for snorkeling, diving, swimming with dolphins and sharks, and visiting underwater landscapes as a couple or a family.

It’s important to get the lay of the land, and for first-time visitors, it’s recommended that you head to the top of the park’s lookout tour to get a sense of the park’s layout. Below is a sneak preview of the park; take a look in advance to help plan your day. You can use credit cards or cash here, and there are ATMs, but we suggest you take you cash out in advance and avoid high transaction fees.

Make sure that you take a look at the day’s shows and events when you arrive, so you can plan you time accordingly. You don’t need to rent a locker if you want to snorkel in the underground rivers, as at the beginning of the route you can lock your things into a bag that only you have a key to, and they will be sent to the end point of your swimming route.

Both experts and travelers say Xcaret is a sort of Yucatán-style Disneyland , a large outdoor "eco-park" filled with an aviary, a dolphin aquarium, a turtle sanctuary and a beach perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling. The park also offers various excursions like dolphin interactions, stingray encounters, shark swims, snuba tours and speedboat rides. Stay the day at Xcaret then enjoy the evening events, which include a dinner show that showcases more than 500 years of Mexico history through historical reenactments, traditional dance and live music. Xcaret is home to a few dining venues as well.

Past visitors were big fans of Xcaret, noting that the park was filled with attractions, things to explore and activities to enjoy, though some do say it can get very crowded. Some also note Xcaret's admission fees are expensive, but most say it's worth it, calling out the well-maintained exhibits and beach, as well as the pleasant staff. Past visitors recommended setting aside at least one full day to take advantage of Xcaret's attractions and experiences. In fact, some said you could spend two days here and not see the same thing twice. Travelers also note you can save money by purchasing your tickets in advance online.

Xcaret is located about 6 miles south of Playa del Carmen. If you don't have your own set of wheels, you can reach the park via taxi (fares cost approximately $14 to $15) or by public bus. Buses to the park leave from Playa's main bus station on 5th Avenue. For additional information on Xcaret's attractions and admission costs, check out its  website .

Nearby Hotels

If you're hoping to spend lots of time at Xcaret during your Playa del Carmen vacation, it can help to book a nearby hotel. Options closest to the park include Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Occidental at Xcaret .

The park is open daily year-round from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Prices for admission vary depending on the ticket you purchase and the number of days you want to spend at Xcaret. If purchased online in advance, tickets start at about $109 for adults and around $82 for kids ages 5 to 11. There are build-your-own package options available and discounts if you book combo packages with photos, add-on activities or admission to its sister attractions. Keep in mind: Not all activities are included in the admission price. You can also add on transportation to and from the park.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Travel Guide – Escape to Paradise in the Riviera Maya

hotel xcaret mexico

Hotel Xcaret Mexico provided me with transportation and accommodations for the purpose of this travel guide. This article contains affiliate links at no cost to you.

Recently I took a trip to the Riviera Maya to be among the first ever to visit Hotel Xcaret Mexico both before its official opening and during its opening ceremony. I’ve put together this guide for those who want to escape to paradise but don’t have the skinny on where they can find it.

What is paradise? For some its toes in the sand, exotic birds, and Mai Thais by the sea. others, it’s any place that takes you away from your everyday life.

For me, it’s a place far away from work, but close enough to return to work without being jetlagged, teeming with mythology and folklore, and visually breathtaking. Mai Thais by the sea welcomed.

Tucked away in the Riviera Maya this all-inclusive luxury hotel is benchmarking paradise. Overlooking the Caribbean Sea and surrounded by ancient mythology adventures, it is the first eco-friendly resort built from the ground up in Latin America.

All you have to do is pack your bags to reach there through Cancun Airport Transportation . Leave the rest to them.

Tell you more? Gladly.

Paradise by the Sea — Hotel Xcaret Mexico is a Luxury All-Inclusive Masterpiece of the Riviera Maya

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is the latest addition to the Xcaret family. It’s a magical place where eco-friendliness, sustainability, luxury, and adventure come together offering all-inclusive accommodations to guests traveling to the Riviera Maya.

Its contemporary rustic design blends Mexican culture with an organic, spa-like environment both in the suites and on the property. By day it’s an otherworldly paradise of caves, coves, rivers, and jungle.

By night fire-lit torches and lighting command attention as you are immersed in 360 degrees of ambiance.

hotel xcaret mexico

When I first arrived back in October for a site visit (pre-opening) I was completely blown away. Quite literally this hotel seemed like a mashup of Avatar’s Pandora and something from a far-off planet in Star Wars. I immediately fell in love with its organic lines and rustic contemporary design.

This place is not only surrounded by water, but the river runs through it offering spectacular views at every turn. Still, I had no idea what it was truly like until my recent overnight visit for its opening ceremony when I had the opportunity to stay for two evenings.

At this point, I was already sold on the ambiance of the property, but arriving would prove outstanding hospitality and comfort. From my bathrobe to my mojitos, every single thing was perfect.

It truly is paradise, and one I’ll be visiting for the rest of my life. If you’re planning a trip, here is just about everything you need to know about Hotel Xcaret Mexico.

Wait, what are Xcaret Parks and Tours?

If you’ve been following my adventures then you’ve likely seen that I’ve been working with Xcaret Parks for years now. Xcaret Parks and Tours are eco-archaeological parks set in the natural landscapes of the Riviera Maya where the jungle meets the sea.

Wrapped in underground river systems, waterfalls, caves, and cenotes, Xcaret Parks offer unforgettable experiences rich in the culture and ancient mythology of Mexico. Each park is like a magical jungle adventure where no expense is spared on details.

You could find yourself in underground caves, beside waterfalls or rope swinging into a crystalline river. The adventures are countless.

Here’s a brief summary of each park:

Sacred Mayan Journey Xcaret, Gauge Rybak, Kidfriendly

Xcaret Park — Cultural heritage and love for the environment await you in one of the best family theme parks in the world. Delve into the trails of Xcaret to discover how the Mayan jungle and culture of Mexico combine in more than 50 attractions.

Located on the seashore in the Riviera Maya , Xcaret is truly a magical place.

Check out my photo journal of Xcaret Park or my Day of the Dead Festival experience from last year.

Xplor — 65 million years ago a 10 km-diameter asteroid struck the Yucatan peninsula. Over millions of years, nature sculpted the underground landscape of caves, caverns, and rivers. Miraculous stalactites and stalagmites began taking shape creating stunning underground decorations and exposing precious fossils.

In this adventurous eco-archaeological setting you can experience six activities: zip-lines, amphibious vehicles, rafting and swimming in underground rivers, and spelunking, and a hammock splash.

Check out my last adventure to Xplor here .

Xplor Fuego —  After sunset, Xplor Fuego takes Xplor to another level that invites you to discover new adventures to the scene of fire-lit torches, fireflies, bonfires, and stars that light up caves, paths, and bridges.

Zipline at sunset, venture into the dark jungle, plunge into refreshing waters of an underground river, or just enjoy the atmosphere of the jungle at night.

xenses park

Xenses —  15 activities will take you on a fantastic journey through air, land, and water to revive your senses and awaken those you didn’t know you had. This is an experience full of challenges for your mind and body in a world of sensations.

Harmonize your senses as you journey through caverns, gardens, a town, rivers, waterfalls, and much more. It’s an attraction unlike any I’ve ever experienced before.

Check out our associate Editors Nia and Tim’s adventure to Xenses here .

Xilco Milco — Your party night out in Cancun and Riviera Maya! Live the joy of the Mexican culture, customs, and traditions through music, dance, games, and food in an excursion onboard colorful party barges across unique scenery from Mexico accompanied by family, friends and an animated host.

Xenotes Tour — Cenote is Mayan for “cave with water”. These caves are deep and filled with water from underground rivers. Ancient Mayan communities had a strong connection with cenotes, as it was their source of water and the entrance to the underworld.

A professional tour of four different types of cenotes in the heart of the Mayan jungle will challenge you as you descend by assisted rappel to a wonderful turquoise blue water cenote, sheltered by an ancient cave. You will be refreshed as you zip line into a cenote and you will feel adventurous as you kayak through a magical cenote of exotic vegetation and stone walls.

Xel-Há — Imagine a magical seaside paradise steeped in mythology and lore. This nature lover’s dream is a natural aquarium that sits on the Caribbean Sea in the Riviera Maya and is a model for sustainable tourism development.

Ancient Mayans baptized this site with the name Xel-Há which means, “where water is born.”

Xel-Ha Park, Gauge Rybak, Kidfriendly

Legend says that Xel-Ha was created by Mayan Gods. Pleased with its beauty, they permitted mortals entry to their paradise. But first, the Gods appointed three guardians to care for it:

Huh, the Iguana, Guardian of the Land, Chuc Kay, the Pelican, Guardian of the Air, and Kay Op, the Parrotfish, Guardian of the Water. It is said that these guardians still protect and care for the Park and everyone who comes to visit.

Check out my last adventure to Xel-Ha here .

Xichen Tour —  Three spectacular archaeological ruins of ancient Maya and two mysterious cenotes can be toured with Xichen Tours to include; ChichĂ©n ItzĂĄ , Tulum, CobĂĄ, ZacĂ Cenote and the Sacred Blue Cenote at Ik’kil as well as La Casona, an 18th-century colonial mansion.

Chichén Itzå is an ancient Mayan city known for being the first one to worship the feathered serpent god, Kukulcån. Its main building, the Pyramid of Kukulcån or El Castillo, is an exact three-dimensional calendar, perfectly represented throughout its structure with the number of days, weeks, months, and years, which we use to this day.

It is the most representative icon of Mayan culture . Nearby the Pyramid of Kukulcán you will see “The Sacred Cenote” for the remains and jewelry discovered inside confirm that it was used for religious ceremonies in honor of the rain god.

Tulum is the only archaeological site built beachfront and is the best-preserved. Its natural beauty paired with architectural magnificence draws spectators and is heavily photographed.

Cobá is home to the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan and the second tallest in the Mayan world. The pyramid of Nohoch Mul measures 138 feet, the equivalent of a 10-story building. Here you can find the famous “end of the world” inscription, the Stela One.

Zací Cenote is one of the largest, most impressive open cenotes in Yucatan . It is located a few blocks from the main square of Valladolid and it is the place where the legend of the love of Zac Nicté and Hul-Kil arose.

Sacred Blue Cenote at Ik’kil allows you to immerse yourself in waters once only accessible by Mayan kings. Surrounded by trees and lush vegetation falling like waterfalls you’ll find yourself in 131 feet of crystal clear waters, ideal for swimming and admiring goldfish, catfish, even small turtles.

La Casona is an 18th-century colonial mansion once owned by a governor of Yucatan, General José Iturralde Draconis. Here past splendor is combined with the mixture of flavors of the present as guests are invited to admire its architecture and culinary delights of pre-Hispanic ingredients such as corn, achiote, pumpkin seeds, and habanero chile, with those brought from distant lands like garlic, pork, chicken, and almonds.

What Can Kids do?

hotel xcaret mexico

Little kids can learn about Mexican culture as they enjoy a wide array of activities that have been specially designed to let their imagination and creativity run free.

There is a Kid Zone for younger kids and a teenager zone for older kids. So, you can sit back and get some much-needed you time. There is also a place for teens to hang out and a kid ‘s-only only pool.

What’s Casa Fuego all about? The adults-only section of the resort

hotel xcaret mexico

Casa Fuego is a seaside building with a rooftop bar designed for adults only. This means no kids around for those looking for peace and quiet.

Let’s talk about dining!

hotel xcaret mexico

Ten restaurants and eight bars at Hotel Xcaret Mexico will prove mouth-watering as you’re taken on a culinary journey across the globe. Elegant Mexican-inspired ambiance, Asian-inspired contemporary design, ancient Mayan-inspired seaside eateries, and romantic cave dinners are just some of the scenes that you’ll find on the property.

And need I even tell you how fabulous swim-up bars are?

hotel xcaret mexico

Among the many amazing restaurants on-site, several stood out to me for their incredible food, convenience, and atmosphere. The El Mercado Restaurant which is the main go-to spot for buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner offers farm-to-table ingredients and a chef who will make your food fresh.

There were a lot of options here for anyone with special dietary needs as well, including fresh seafood.

I also love the atmosphere and outdoor seating option. Xin-Gao also delighted my senses with ambiances and delicious Asian offerings like Hibachi and sushi.

La Trajinerawon my heart for its location by the sea, view of one of the hotel’s infinity pools, and the option to strip down into my bathing suit and hit the swim-up bar immediately after. The fact that my server told me I was “his Queen” didn’t hurt either.

hotel xcaret mexico

Holding a special spot on my list is Ha.  This contemporary dinner restaurant   invites guests (at an extra cost) to enjoy a water vortex, a unique cocktail bar, and a private cava and dining room. But even more appealing are the culinary masterpieces created by Executive Chef Carlos GaytĂĄn.

GaytĂĄn, known as Mexico’s first Michelin Star chef , owns and operates Mexique Chicago and is also the third placeholder for America’s Top Chef. I had the chance to meet Chef Carlos and enjoy his distinctive offerings to which I was officially addicted and am now considering dinner in Chicago.

Yeah, it was that good.

Additional Adventures and on Site Amenities

You don’t have to leave the hotel to have an adventure. You can spend the day kayaking in the hotel’s turquoise river, jump out and explore caves or relax in a riverside hammock.

Or maybe you’d rather hike in the jungle? After a long day of relaxing, why not relax more at the hotel’s spa where you can get hydrotherapy, massages, facials, and even sit in a traditional Mayan cave sauna. If you’re really dedicated, make your way over to their massive gym equipped with every Life Fitness machine you can imagine.

Practical Advice

Be sure to pack clothes for resort casual wear, resort dress wear, adventure wear and multiple bathing suits. You’ll also want that backup charger for your phone so you can be sure to always get a photo (there are many places to be inspired).

Also, I highly recommend you get a waterproof case for your phone so you can adventure on. Sandals and comfortable footwear is recommended for both the hotel and the parks. Also, bring a small backpack for day trips.

Best Time to Visit Xcaret in Mexico (2024 Guide)

is it safe to travel to xcaret mexico

Planning a trip to Mexico and considering a visit to Xcaret? You’re in for a treat! Xcaret is one of the best theme parks in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, offering a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages.

I’ve been living in Mexico for the past year and have had the pleasure of visiting Xcaret. It’s a great destination that will provide unforgettable memories for your vacation.

But when is the best time to visit Xcaret? Let’s explore the different seasons and key factors to help you make an informed decision.

Best Time to Visit Xcaret

Stone Xcaret sign (best time to visit Xcaret)

For me, the best time to visit Xcaret is April. The weather is perfect and crowds aren’t terrible.

But the best time to visit Xcaret for you depends on several factors: weather, crowds, and special events. Knowing what to expect from each season can help you decide when the best time is for your visit.

Overview of Xcaret

Xcaret is an extraordinary ecological and cultural theme park located in the stunning Riviera Maya region of Mexico. It is considered one of the top attractions in the country, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience that combines nature, history, culture, and entertainment.

Man in body paint

Xcaret Park is named after the nearby archaeological site of Xcaret, which was once a significant Mayan trading port. Today, Xcaret showcases the rich heritage and biodiversity of the region in a captivating way.

It spans over 200 acres of lush jungle, pristine beaches, and underground rivers, providing a diverse range of activities and attractions for all ages.

One of the highlights of Xcaret is its emphasis on ecological conservation and sustainable practices. The park is home to various conservation programs and supports the protection of local flora and fauna, including endangered species.

Visitors can see the park’s commitment to environmental preservation through interactive exhibits and educational presentations.

For nature enthusiasts, Xcaret offers breathtaking natural wonders. Visitors can explore underground rivers and swim in crystal-clear cenotes, which are natural sinkholes unique to the Yucatan Peninsula.

Snorkeling and diving opportunities abound, allowing guests to observe a variety of marine life and coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea.

Beach at Xcaret

The park also celebrates Mexican culture and traditions through live performances and cultural displays. The “Xcaret Mexico Espectacular” show showcases the history of Mexico through music, dance, and folklore.

Visitors can experience traditional ceremonies, visit a replica of a Mayan village, and interact with local artisans to learn about their crafts.

Animal lovers will delight in the park’s wildlife exhibits, including a butterfly pavilion, a jaguar island, and a sea turtle conservation area. Xcaret is committed to animal welfare and offers educational experiences that promote understanding and respect for these creatures.

In addition to its natural and cultural offerings, Xcaret provides numerous recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy thrilling adventures such as zip-lining, snorkeling with sharks and stingrays, and exploring a replica of a Mayan jungle trail.

There are also relaxing options like floating along the underground rivers or lounging on pristine beaches.

Underground river at Xcaret

Xcaret takes pride in its culinary experiences, featuring a wide range of restaurants offering delicious Mexican and international cuisine. From traditional dishes to gourmet delights, visitors can savor a variety of flavors while enjoying the park’s scenic surroundings.

Overall, Xcaret is a truly remarkable destination that seamlessly blends nature, culture, and entertainment. It provides a memorable and immersive experience for visitors, showcasing the beauty and richness of Mexico’s heritage and biodiversity.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Xcaret offers something for everyone and is a must-visit attraction in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Xcaret Weather

The weather in the Yucatan Peninsula, where XCaret is located, can vary throughout the year. It’s essential to take into account factors such as average temperature, rainfall, and the occurrence of tropical storms or hurricanes. By considering these elements, you can plan your visit to Xcaret accordingly.

Sunny Caribbean beach

High Season (December – April)

If you prefer to visit when the weather is consistently warm and the skies are clear, the high season from December to April might be the perfect time for you.

During this period, the average high temperatures range from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, making it ideal for enjoying water activities such as snorkeling , swimming in the underground rivers, and exploring the coral reefs.

However, it’s important to note that this is also the peak season, and the park may be more crowded than usual, especially in January. It’s advisable to book your Xcaret tickets and hotel accommodations well in advance to secure your spot.

Low Season (May – November)

If you’re looking to avoid crowds and score a great deal, the low season from May to November might be the right choice for you. However, keep in mind that this period coincides with the rainy season and hurricane season in the region.

The wettest months tend to be September and October , with higher chances of rain. Although rainy days can limit some outdoor activities, Xcaret remains open, and there are still plenty of cultural activities, live music, and shows to enjoy. Plus, you’ll have the advantage of lower hotel rates and fewer people, providing a more tranquil experience.

Shoulder Season (April/May & October/November)

The shoulder seasons, which fall between the high and low seasons, offer a balance between good weather and fewer crowds. The months of April and May, as well as October and November, are considered the shoulder seasons in the Yucatan Peninsula.

During these times, you can expect pleasant temperatures and limited chances of rain. It’s an excellent time to explore Xcaret and enjoy the different attractions without the peak season crowds. Additionally, you might find more favorable rates for hotels and Xcaret tickets.

Special Events and Celebrations

People in Mayan costumes and body paint

Xcaret in Mexico is not only a place of natural beauty and cultural immersion but also a venue for special events and celebrations. Throughout the year, the park hosts a variety of exciting and unique experiences that add an extra touch of magic to visitors’ journeys.

Here are some of the special events and celebrations you can expect to encounter at Xcaret.

Xcaret Mexico Espectacular (Daily)

This nightly show is a grand celebration of Mexican culture and history. With over 300 artists, including dancers, musicians, and actors, the performance takes guests on a journey through time, showcasing the country’s rich traditions and folklore.

Colorful costumes, vibrant music, and breathtaking performances make it an unforgettable experience.

Sacred Pre-Hispanic Journey (Last Friday & Saturday of May)

Pre-Hispanic Journey performance

This unique event recreates the ancient Mayan pilgrimage to the island of Cozumel . Hundreds of participants, dressed in traditional Mayan attire, paddle across the Caribbean Sea in canoes, just as their ancestors did centuries ago.

The journey culminates in a celebration, where visitors can witness the rituals, dances, and ceremonies that bring the pilgrimage to life.

Independence Day (September 15)

September 15th marks Mexico’s Independence Day, and Xcaret joins in the nationwide celebrations. Guests can witness the “Cry of Independence” ceremony, where the Mexican President reenacts the historic call for freedom.

The park is adorned with patriotic decorations, and visitors can enjoy traditional music, dance performances, and fireworks to commemorate this important occasion.

Festival of Life and Death Traditions (October 30 – November 1)

Cemetery at Xcaret

Xcaret pays homage to the revered Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), a beautiful celebration of life and remembrance. During this event, the park transforms into an enchanted realm, adorned with marigolds, colorful decorations, and altars dedicated to loved ones who have passed away.

Visitors can witness traditional ceremonies, art exhibitions, and theatrical performances that capture the essence of this meaningful cultural celebration.

Xcaret Posadas (December)

Posadas are cherished Mexican celebrations held in the lead-up to Christmas. Originating from the arrival of friars in the 16th century, they have evolved into a beloved tradition.

These festivities reenact the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph in search of a birthplace for Baby Jesus. The celebrations culminate with piñatas brimming with delightful surprises.

These special events and celebrations at Xcaret provide visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.

Whether it’s witnessing captivating performances, participating in traditional ceremonies, or enjoying seasonal festivities, these events enhance the already incredible experience of exploring the park’s natural wonders and attractions.

  • Check weather forecasts: Stay updated on weather conditions, particularly during the rainy season and hurricane season. It’s always a good idea to have a backup plan if inclement weather arises.

Pro Tips for Your Mexico Trips

Do i need travel insurance.

YES . No matter when you visit Mexico, don’t forget to buy travel insurance. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. If you need it once it will pay for itself many times over. I highly recommend Safety Wing . They have a proven track record for customer satisfaction and a variety of coverage levels.

Is it safe to rent a car in Mexico?

YES. Renting a car in Mexico is not only safe, but it’s a great way to explore. Discover Cars is hands down the best rental car company . They check international and local companies to get you the best rates.

Will my phone work in Mexico?

Maybe  — It depends on your company, so check with your provider. If you don’t have free service in Mexico, the least expensive option is to buy a Telcel SIM card . As Mexico’s largest carrier, Telcel has the best coverage of any Mexico SIM Cards. I have one and it’s been a lifesaver.

You can also get an eSIM. Airalo has coverage in over 200 countries/regions, including Mexico.

What’s the best way to book my Mexico accommodations?

For Mexico hotels,  Booking.com is the best site , but for hostels,  check out Hostel World . If you’re considering a Mexico Airbnb, don’t forget to  check VRBO , which is often cheaper with more options.

What do I pack for Mexico?

My Mexico packing list has all the info you need on packing for your trip to Mexico.

What’s the best site for great deals on flights to Mexico?

For finding cheap Mexico flights, I recommend using Skyscanner .

Do I need a visa for Mexico?

Probably Not . U.S., Canadian, and most European passport holders don’t need a visa for Mexico. To verify if you’ll need a Mexico travel visa  check the Mexican Consulate’s website. For assistance with all your worldwide visa questions, check out iVisa .

Hotel XCaret Mexico

First and foremost, Hotel XCaret is stunning.  The buildings blend seamlessly with the flora and fauna of the Yucatan’s landscape.   The jungle, lagoons and rivers flowing throughout the resort make you feel like you are miles away from civilization.  The hotel itself is located about one hour south of Cancun in Playa Del Carmen.

Hotel XCaret is a large scale resort with 900 rooms, although it doesn’t feel that large.  The resort is spread out and designed in a way where it never feels crowded.  During our week we never waited in line for a meal or had a problem finding a pool or beach chair.  We had no problems with loud rooms or even having to wait for an elevator.

The resort has 11 restaurants, 13 pools, and an extensive beachfront lagoon that is perfect for kids and adults alike.  We especially appreciated the beach lagoons considering much of the Cancun area is plagued with seaweed that is currently congesting the nearby beaches.  There was no seaweed to speak of here.

The pools and  beach both have drink service.  However, there isn’t any food service, which we kind of missed.  There were times when we wished we could order some snacks by the pool instead of having to pack up and head into a restaurant.  They do however have quick-serve food carts around the pool areas serving things like burgers, crepes, elote, and ice cream. You just need to go to them instead of them coming to you.

Hotel Xcaret

All Fun Inclusive

Hotel XCaret takes the all-inclusive concept to a whole new level.  They consider themselves an “all-fun” inclusive, which means so much more is included here than at a traditional all-inclusive resort.  A stay at Hotel XCaret includes unlimited access and round trip transportation to all of the nearby parks: Xcaret, Xel-HĂĄ, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xoximilco, Xenses, Xavage and Xenotes.  In addition to the parks, excursions are also included to places like Tulum, ChichĂ©n ItzĂĄ, and Isla Mujeres.

The only problem I faced with all of these activities and options was feeling the need to try to fit them all in.  Once I realized that there was no way to do it all in one week, I planned out what we were most interested in doing and went from there.  During our stay we visited Xplor Fuego, XCaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum and Xenses.  We also felt it was important to make sure we planned a few days to also relax and enjoy the resort.

Accommodations

The rooms are spacious and nicely appointed.  Our room had two queen beds and a pull out couch, which gave our family of four plenty of room to sleep.  The rooms have somewhat of an open concept when it comes to the bathroom area.  The sink and whirlpool tub are in the room, while the toilet and shower are tucked away behind a sliding mirror.  I wasn’t the biggest fan of the room’s layout, especially since we were traveling with our kids.  Having the sink in the sleeping area makes it hard to do things like washing hands and brushing your teeth without waking everyone up.  The room could also be better when it comes to storage.  The drawers and closet provided barely enough room for our clothes. The accommodations seem to be more for double occupancy, not quadruple.

Halfway through our stay, we decided to splurge a little and upgrade our room.  We switched from an ocean-view suite to a jump-off river suite.  I have to admit that this was a great decision.  It didn’t only give us the chance to experience an entirely different section of the resort, but it also gave us the ability to enjoy the lagoons and river straight from our room.  If you can, I highly recommend booking one of these rooms.  These rooms are different from the swim-up suites.  The swim-up suites give you direct access to a pool, while the jump-off lagoon suites give you direct access to the ocean-fed lagoons and rivers.

hotel xcaret

The resort has 11 restaurants plus a 24-hour room service.  The room service is actually quite fabulous.  We enjoyed many breakfasts out on our patio overlooking the lagoon while watching the fish swim by.  It’s also worth noting that the resort also offers lots of vegan and vegetarian choices, including Bio, their fully vegan restaurant.

During our week-long stay, we tried six of the eleven restaurants.  I can honestly say that we never had a bad meal or experience, although my husband did end up eating a bowl of bugs, but that was his choice.  He didn’t realize that chapulines in Spanish translates to fried grasshoppers! It was dark inside the restaurant and he just kept popping them in his mouth until my daughter yelled out, “I think those are bugs!”  Oh well, to be honest, he said even the grasshoppers were quite good.

Hotel XCaret

Is Hotel Xcaret Kid Friendly?

You bet it is.  Hotel XCaret Mexico is open to all ages.  However, its sister resort, Hotel XCaret Arte, is adults-only.  My kids are 12 and 15 and they absolutely loved everything about Hotel XCaret Mexico.  They were able to do as much or as little as they wanted.  My only complaint is that the game room requires an adult present for anyone under the age of 18.  That was a bit of a bummer since my husband and I were looking forward to a little alone time while the kids played.

hotel xcaret

Travel Sustainability and Cleanliness

I feel it’s worth mentioning Hotel XCaret’s commitment to sustainability.  Hotel Xcaret MĂ©xico received the EarthCheck certification for Planning and Design in 2017, making them the first hotel on the American continent to receive this international award before its opening.  You won’t find things like single-use plastic water bottles here.  Instead, you will find purified water in reusable glass bottles.   Now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t recall seeing any single-use plastic at all during our trip.

I also wanted to point out something that is really important to me when I’m staying at a hotel or resort, and this is cleanliness.  Nothing can ruin a vacation quicker than feeling dirty or seeing garbage all over.  I was absolutely impressed by the cleanliness of this resort — especially considering the resort was at capacity and it was spring break.  Everything was absolutely pristine.

Hotel Xcaret

Would I Go Again?

This is solid yes!  While I love to visit new places when I travel, I would definitely vacation at Hotel Xcaret again.  I feel like we barely scratched the surface of things to experience at this resort.  Despite all of the amazing things Hotel Xcaret gets right, there were some things I would like to see improved upon.  First, I would like to see a bigger variety of room options with different layouts, which I know is a pretty big ask. On the easier side, pool-side food service with a selection of easy-to-eat-by-the-pool and kid-friendly options would be amazing.  Despite these minor inconveniences, the plusses greatly outweighed the minuses we experienced during our stay.  We would most definitely visit Hotel XCaret again.

I don’t know about you, but my favorite type of shopping is vacation shopping! I am headed to my annual girl’s trip to Mexico this weekend and I have been shopping like crazy for that and for Greece this summer! What do you think, are they all keepers? Don’t you love discovering new things in familiar places? I had to update an older blog post to add a new favorite place to relax at Disneyland. I can’t believe that we only recently discovered The Golden Horseshoe! We’ve probably walked by it 100 times but never went in. It’s seriously the best spot to kick back, grab a quick bite, and relax on a hot day at Disneyland. Do yourself a favor and be sure to get a root beer float! So yummy! Yay for sunny weather! I don’t know how it is in your neck of the woods, but it seems like we’ve had an extra long, cool stretch of winter and spring this year, but it seems that we finally might be turning a corner. By the way, if you were in the market for some new shorts for the summer, I highly recommend checking out these by @democracyclothing . Having a nice sit down meal is essential to making our Disney trip as magical as possible. We have a few restaurants that we look forward to each time we visit. In order to get the reservations we want, even at the hard to get restaurants, we use a few techniques that have worked for us each and every time. 1. Book Early: Reservations open up at 6 AM, 60 days in advance. 2. Be Flexible: Book what ever time you can get. You can always try to change the time after you get the reservation. 3. Check for Cancellations: These do pop up every so often. 4. Join a Walk-up List: these actually work a lot better than I thought they would. 5. Visit in Person: if all else fails, go visit the restaurant where you would like to eat. If you visit, especially in the off hours, there is a chance they can get you in. You can find more about these five simple tips over on StayingBlonde.com. Since you can’t go to Xcaret/Arte’s beach (ocean), is there anywhere that is safe enough to get into the ocean without all the rocks? Seems as though the whole beach along the ocean is large rocks.

Our Visit To Xcaret Park: Tickets, Tips, Photos and More

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

We just returned home from a wonderful Spring break in Mexico! We split our time between an all-inclusive resort near Cancun and an Airbnb in Playa del Carmen. While in Playa del Carmen, we took a few day trips and even spent the day at  Xcaret Park . It’s one of our favorite places, and today, I want to share my Xcaret tips, how we buy our Xcaret park tickets, and more with you!

This post is specifically about the park Xcaret, which we have now visited twice. This group also owns the new Xcaret Hotel and several other nearby parks, such as XPlor, Xel-Ha, Xenses, Xavage, Xoximilco, and more. These are located all over Quintana Roo. I have heard many great things about the  Hotel Xcaret Mexico  all-inclusive resort.

So, let’s get started!

Xcaret Park

Xcaret  is a large ecological park located in the Riviera Maya. It is home to three natural rivers (some parts underground), ancient ruins, and a beautiful coastline. Additionally, there are animal habitats and encounters, snorkeling, cultural experiences, great shows, and so much more!

Xcaret opened in 1990 and is celebrating its 35th anniversary! It’s not all waterpark or theme park. But don’t expect it to be a Mexico Disneyland!  It’s truly an eco-adventure park.  There are over 50 natural and cultural attractions at Xcaret in Mexico.

This cultural theme park is truly a destination in itself, and I recommend a day at Xcaret to anyone visiting the Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum areas. And make sure to budget the whole day because you will not run out of things to do.  On both of our visits to Xcaret, time flew by as we enjoyed the natural water activities.  I will say that we enjoyed it when the kids were younger but loved it now that they are 13 and 15.

Check out  this cute Instagram reel  for a side-by-side photo reenactment of both visits. They have grown so much!

Where is Xcaret?

Park Xcaret is located near  Playa del Carmen  in the Yucatan Peninsula. The map below shows its exact location. The easiest way to get there is by Taxi, but many resorts also offer transportation. The taxi ride from our rental in Playa del Carmen took less than 10 minutes!

Buying Xcaret Park Tickets

You can buy your  Xcaret tickets directly from Xcaret Park  or through a third party. Many hotels also offer tickets through their concierge. These are all safe options. However, I would avoid buying tickets from street vendors or random kiosks.

For this trip, we bought our  Xcaret tickets through Get Your Guide  for several reasons.

(1) The tickets were basically the same price when I booked.

(2) I like the Get Your Guide app for both translation and staying organized.

(3) Tickets are changeable.  In fact, a couple of days before our trip, we changed ours from Thursday to Friday after realizing that I had several Airbnb check-ins on Thursday that would require by phone nearby all afternoon.

(4) You can cancel your ticket up to 24 hours in advance for a refund.

However, buying Xcaret tickets directly from the park can offer advanced pricing deals. All tickets include access to the popular evening Xcaret MĂ©xico Espectacular show!

IMPORTANT TIP: You need to ensure you have your ID  to claim your tickets at the ticket booth.  I didn’t have mine and thought we were out of luck. Thankfully, I had a scan of it on my phone, and they took that. Make sure the ID you have in hand matches the name on the ticket receipt.

Xcaret vs Xcaret Plus Tickets

There are two main types of tickets: the regular ticket and the Xcaret Plus ticket. We purchased the basic full-day ticket for both of our trips.

The  regular Xcaret tickets  include access to most parts of the park.

The Plus ticket also includes these 3 additional items:

(1) Use of snorkeling gear

(2) Access to Plus Area facilities, including dressing rooms, restrooms, and lockers

(3) One lunch buffet. Includes one beer and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages while consuming food

You can still add additional experiences, such as the dolphin encounter, Sea Trek, Snuba, boating, etc., to either ticket.

Which Xcaret Ticket Should You Choose?

They essentially break even if you use all three extras with the  Xcaret Plus ticket , so you can choose either option.

In my opinion, if you want to do the buffet, just buy the  Xcaret Plus Ticket . We preferred to graze and snack throughout the day rather than have one big sit-down meal, but we probably ended up spending the same amount of money, if not more. You can also rent the lockers and snorkel equipment that’s included in the Plus ticket separately.

There is also a cheaper afternoon-only ticket and a Total ticket with one optional activity. However, I think you need a full day to really enjoy the park, and there is plenty to do without adding on the extras.

You can click the below links to look at the various tickets and prices!

The Xcaret Park Photos Pass

I  want to stop here and HIGHLY recommend that you purchase the

Xcaret photo pass ! We did this on both trips, years apart, and cherish the photos from both trips. Getting all four of us in photos is challenging, as I am typically behind the camera. However, with the photo pass, we ended up with 100+ fun family photos.

Years ago, our photos came on a USB drive, but in 2024, we simply downloaded the images from the website within 30 days of our trip. It was very easy! They do have a small Xcaret watermark on them.

Visiting Xcaret with teenagers this time made the photo pass extra fun! They were often off on their own or ahead of us on the rivers and took a photo at every opportunity. We all loved looking through their Xcaret Park pictures.

Most of the photos you see in this post (with the Xcaret watermark) were taken with our  Xcaret  photo pass.

When purchasing your photo pass, you must include everyone in your family to ensure you can all participate in the group photos. Most photo opportunities are self-serve, where you scan your band and look toward a mounted camera. However, they also have photographers walking around taking pictures!

Xcaret Park Map

As I mentioned above, Xcaret is a huge park. To make it easier to navigate, six different lines or paths are color-coded by both an actual line on the ground and signs. You can see these on the Xcaret map below.

Click here to view the Xcaret park map !

Our Xcaret Park Review

We loved this year’s visit to Xcaret even more than our visit when the kids were younger. It’s a beautiful and safe place to give older kids some independence. Yes, it’s an investment, but you can get an entire day of fun out of it. I 100% think that Xcaret is “worth it.”

As I shared above, we didn’t buy the Plus ticket on either trip or add on extra activities. That said, I think the various tickets and add-ons are fairly priced. So, if you want to do any of that, do it!

In the following sections, I will share some of the included Xcaret activities and add-ons and my first-hand tips so that you can make the most of your family visit to Xcaret. I wish I had someone to tell me these things before our visit, especially regarding locker locations!

Top Xcaret Activities

The activities at Xcaret can be divided into two sections: included activities and add-ons. First, I will list the free things you can do at Xcaret, which are included with your  regular admission ticket .

As I mentioned earlier, Xcaret has over 50 natural and cultural attractions, so these lists by no means include them all. They are just highlights!

FREE Things To Do

Here are some “free” or included things to do when visiting Xcaret Park near Playa del Carmen. The park itself is an attraction, as most of the trails are tropical jungle trails, with Mayan ruins surprising you around the corner!

  • 3 rivers (partially underground)
  • beach, lagoon, and natural pools
  • lounge chairs and tables throughout
  • Xcaret MĂ©xico Espectacular show
  • Children’s World for little kids
  • Aviary, Butterfly Pavillion
  • the Mayan Village
  • horse exhibition

There are also many opportunities to view animals, including monkeys, deer, sea turtles, dolphins, manatees, sharks, and more!

Popular Add-Ons

There are also many different  add-on activities at Xcaret , and honestly, there is something for everyone! Here is a list of some of the most popular add-ons.

  • Swimming with Dolphins
  • Dolphin Rides
  • Hands-on Shark Encounter
  • Stingray Encounter
  • Paraxute Parasailing
  • Adventures Kids
  • Adrenalina Speed Boat
  • Spa Treatments
  • Wine Pairings

What Should You Bring to Xcaret?

You don’t want to overpack, but you will spend the entire day at the park and want some essential items.  You can access lockers whether they are included in your Xcaret Plus ticket or you purchase one ala carte.  They are large enough for a backpack and a day bag.

I recommend bringing:

  • eco-friendly sunscreen
  • lightweight, quick-dry towels
  • a  waterproof phone case
  • sunglasses with straps
  • regular clothes
  • water bottle
  • a  wet bag

Many of these items are available in gift shops, but they will cost much more! So, I recommend bringing everything in a lightweight bag ( this is my favorite ) or a backpack.

We wore our swimwear under our clothes and then just put our clothes back on top later in the day.  But, many people bring underwear to get out of those wet suits for dinner and then the evening show.

I highly recommend  Dock and Bay towels . We use them on all of our travels. The large size is plenty big. They fold up very small and can fit in the palm of your hand and dry quickly, making them the perfect towel for travel!

Please note that outside food and drink are not permitted at Xcaret Park.

Xcaret Tips:

This is the most important section of this Xcaret blog post! These are my first-hand tips and recommendations. I hope they help you make the most out of your stay.

We did the ala carte lockers; however, we regret choosing the first ones we saw because it was a long walk back to them when we needed something. I recommend getting the lockers along the red line as that is nearest to the beach and water activities.

#2 Lazy River

These take quite a while to traverse. I would budget 45 minutes to an hour, so make sure you don’t get hangry or close to another pre-scheduled activity. Also, they have large waterproof bags at the start of the river for you to put your clothes, bags, etc. (for free). They then bring them via truck to the end of the river, where you pick them up. So, you don’t need to stop by lockers beforehand.

We opted not to do the Xcaret Plus ticket because we prefer to graze all day vs have one large meal. Keep an eye out for the bakery items and sandwiches by the coffee shop, which were filling and at a great price. Also, most food stands offer combo meals such as hot dogs, chips, and a drink. We did that twice!

I hate to say this, but we didn’t stay for the show on either trip. By 7:00 p.m., we were wiped out and ready to go. So, judge your own situation and know that it’s okay to skip that! On the plus side, traffic leaving the park was basically nonexistent when we left at 7:00 pm!

#5 Bring ID

As mentioned earlier, you need your ID at the ticket counter and to buy drinks. I always recommend taking a photo of your ID and passport anytime you travel!

Arrive in your swimsuit with clothes over the top. Bring a wet bag and fresh undergarments to change into later. I recommend you bring a plastic bag or wet bag for your wet swimsuits.

#7 Buy Ahead

Your kids (and you) will really want a  waterproof phone holder  from the park. Save yourself some money and buy that in advance. The same goes for  towels . If you don’t bring your own, they will be much more expensive at the park.

#8 Get AirTags For Young Kids

I highly recommend putting an Apple AirTag bracelet on your kids while at places like this! It gives you an extra piece of mind and as easy way to keep tabs on them!  Click here  to learn about innovative ways to use AirTags for family travel.
