Have a family road trip planned sometime soon?  Traveling with kids isn’t always the easiest.  You have the bathroom stop requests right after you just asked them if they had to go.  There’s the yelling, whining, and screaming at times.  And then there’s the infamous snack request every five minutes.

Finding healthy snacks for kids at home comes with its challenges, but now you’re supposed to pack healthy road trip snacks for kids?  How is that even possible?

When you’re traveling with kids, your routine is likely off and so is their diet.  That’s why packing healthy road trip snacks for kids is so helpful.  It always feels like all they eat are snacks anyways, so why not leverage this and make sure you’re packing balanced snack options?

In this post, I will share how to make a balanced snack for kids, plus 42 dietitian, mom, and kid-approved road trip snacks for kids, how to pack road trip snacks for kids, and tips for keeping perishable foods cold.

Even if you don’t have a road trip planned any time soon, these snacks work great for anywhere on the go, sending to school with your kids, and at home too!

How to make a balanced snack for kids

It’s easy to just throw your kids a package of goldfish crackers and call it a day.  Heck, I do this sometimes too.  When serving your child a snack, it’s to both of your benefits to make sure it’s balanced.  And a “naked carb” aka goldfish by itself, will just leave them asking for a snack five minutes later – I know you want to avoid this!

To build your child a healthy and balanced snack that will keep them fuller for longer and provide more of the nutrients they need for their rapidly growing bodies, follow my Super Simple Snack Strategy.

healthy snacks for kids

By making sure you provide at least one fruit or vegetable with one protein/fat or grain, you’re exposing them to a wider variety of nutrients their body needs and holding of the snack requests.

Plus we know that kids don’t get in enough vegetables and are barely eating enough fruit according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans . Pairing fruits and veggies with their favorite snack gives them more exposure and opportunity to try it and eventually eat it. Never assume they won’t eat it either. Just give them a teeny tiny piece instead.

Benefits of offering a balanced snack:

  • More exposure to a variety of foods
  • Maximizing opportunities for more nutrition.
  • More filling, leaving them fuller longer and not asking you for a snack five minutes later (never guaranteed).

Dietitian approved road trip snacks for kids

Below are 42 different snack options that work great for road trip snacks for kids. This list is not exhaustive, nor is it perfect, however they all provide some form of nutritional value, some more than others.

More important than any single ingredient or gram of sugar in a particular food is overall variety. As long as you are pairing your child’s snack, and yours for that matter, with a fruit or veggie, you’re providing balance, exposure and potentially more valuable nutrients.

Choose whatever snacks you’d like for your kids, consider their preferences and don’t forget to try and keep to a meal time schedule of snacks and meals every two to three hours. This will make sure they’re actually hungry come meal time.

With each road trip snack I mention below, you will also see what Super Simple Snack group it belongs to to help you easily identify and pair food together to make a more balanced snack.

Super Simple Snack groups = fruit, vegetable, protein/fat, grain.

42 road trip snacks for kids

road trip snacks for kids banana

Fresh is a great option, but isn’t always the easiest to travel with. Whole fruit like bananas, apples, oranges, and pears are easier than berries and other fruit.

Super Simple Snack Group = fruit

Mini Raisin Boxes

road trip snacks for kids raisins

Golden Raisins

road trip snacks for kids golden raisins

If your child enjoys regular raisins, switch things up with golden raisins . Providing a different version (golden raisins) of food they already like (regular raisins), helps your child get used to trying new foods without even realizing it!

Freeze-dried Fruit

road trip snacks for kids freeze dried fruit

Freeze-dried frui t is the perfect road trip snack for kids because not only are they getting fiber, vitamins, and minerals as they would from fresh fruit, it’s a crunchy snack that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Look for options with no added sugar if possible. Fruit is sweet enough as it is.

Super Simple Snack Group = veggie

road trip snacks for kids cereal

Cereal is an easy go-to road trip snack for kids. They like it, it’s easy to throw in a bag and it’s fortified with so many valuable vitamins and minerals like B Vitamins and Iron. Super Simple Snack Group = grain

road trip snacks for kids pretzels

I love these peanut butter puffs for any occasion, but they’re especially good as a road trip snack for kids. This snack alone contains fat, protein, fiber, and iron. Hippeas Chickpea Puffs

Super Simple Snack Group = vegetable – kinda sorta

Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars

road trip snacks for kids fig bar

With traveling and being off schedule, constipation is a common challenge many children and adults face. That’s why packing snacks that contain fiber is so important. Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars contain 2 grams of fiber per serving, plus some protein, fat, and iron.

Nature’s Bakery Baked-In Bars

road trip snacks for kids baked ins

Another great option from Nature’s Bakery is their Baked-In Bars. These have even more protein, fat, fiber than the fig bars. Plus you even get a little taste of chocolate too.

That’s It Bars

road trip snacks for kids thats it

Fruit bars have quickly gained a lot of popularity due to their minimal ingredient list and convenient packaging making it super easy to eat more fruits and veggies. That’s it bars come in a large or mini size. I’m a sucker for mini versions of foods because if they don’t eat all of the full size version, I feel bad tossing it. Sometimes less is more.

road trip snacks for kids dino bar

These fruit bars are unique in that they have an edible wrapper made from potato starch to prevent sticky fingers. They also have a solid amount of protein and fat for a fruit bar which can help keep your kids fuller longer. Use code familynutritionist10 for 10% off!

road trip snacks for kids off the eaten path

You can certainly include chips on your list of road trip snacks for kids, but these Off the Eaten Path Crisps are crunchy, contain fiber, fat, and protein (remember this keeps them fuller for longer) and they’re delicious. Plus they’re a great way to help introduce your child to beans and other vegetables that are sometimes hard to sell.

Super Simple Snack Group = vegetable

Cosmic Carrot Chews

road trip snacks for kids cosmic carrot chews

Cosmic Carrot Chews are basically vegetable fruit snacks made with carrots, but with way less added sugar. They’re literally carrots sweetened with fruit juice and are an excellent source of Vitamin A. Because veggies aren’t the easiest to pack for on the go, nor are they often kids’ favorite, Cosmic Carrot Chews are a must!

Sweet Potato Crackers

road trip snacks for kids sweet potato chips

These sweet potato crackers are so tasty and a great option to add to your cracker collection because if you have kids, you definitely have a cracker collection. For a cracker, this is a pretty decent option with 1 mg of iron, 1 gram of fiber and even some fat and protein too.

That’s It Crunchables

road trip snacks for kids crunchables

The same brand as the popular That’s It Fruit Bars, they also have these crunchable apple snacks that are basically like dried apples. A great shelf-stable way to include apples that are easy to eat because sometimes whole apples are hard for kids to eat.

Annies Cheddar Bunnies

road trip snacks for kids crackers

Another great cracker to add to your cracker collection! We also love their bunny grahams and cheddar squares too because variety is key when it comes to your cracker collection.

Pirate’s Booty

road trip snacks for kids pirates booty

I love Pirates Booty anywhere, anytime! It’s a safe alternative to popcorn for kids four and under since popcorn is a choking hazard . Pirates Booty is easily dissolvable and a delicious snack to add to your pantry, especially the individual packs for on the go or use the large bag to portion into reusable bags.

Mission Mighty Me Puffs

road trip snacks for kids peanut butter puffs

Another dissolvable option that’s great for on the go are Mission Mighty Me Puffs . They have a peanut butter and nut butter option that are great for infants (6 months +), toddlers and even older kids. They’re an easy way to incorporate peanuts and tree nuts, common allergens, on the go or at home.

RX Kids Bars

road trip snacks for kids RX kids bar

Just like your cracker collection, it’s important to have a wide variety of options in your bar collection. RX Kids Bars have minimal ingredients, but plent of fiber, fat and protein.

Peanut Butter Pretzels

road trip snacks for kids peanut butter pretzels

I’m pretty disappointed that I only just recently discovered peanut butter pretzels because they are now one of my favorite snacks. They’re the perfect salty snack and still provide fat, protein and even 1 gram of fiber per serving.

Super Simple Snack Group = protein/fat or grain

Terra Root Vegetable Chips

road trip snacks for kids chips

A chip is a chip is a chip, so eat the chips you love because life is too short – yes, let your kids eat the chips they love too. I did recently discover these Terra Root Vegetable Chips at Costco and they’re super tasty. Plus they’re a great way to help your kids try new foods and eventually learn to like root vegetables not in chip form.

Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Baked Crackers

road trip snacks for kids crunch master

Here we go adding another cracker to the collection. These Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Baked Crackers have 3 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber and .9 mg of iron per serving. If your kids enjoy crackers, throw this option in the mix to switch things up.

Crunch Roasted Edamame Beans

road trip snacks for kids edamame beans

Honestly, Crunchy Roasted Edemame Beans might just be one of the best on the go snacks you could include on your list of road trip snacks for kids. They have 11 grams of protein (11 GRAMS!), 4 grams of fiber and 1 mg of iron. If your kids enjoy a crunchy snack, these are a great option to include variety.

road trip snacks for kids popcorn

Popcorn is a great whole grain snack, but it’s also a choking hazard for children under four. If you have kids under four you can opt for the Pirate’s Booty for a safer option.

Whisps Cheese Crisps

road trip snacks for kids whisps

Because Whisps Cheese Crisps are literally baked cheese, they contain protein and calcium. If your children enjoy cheese, these are an easy way to include protein on the go without worrying about keeping cheese cool.

road trip snacks for kids trail mix

Literally designed for hikers on the go, trail mix is the ultimate road trip snack for a bunch of energy in just a small portion. The nuts provide plant-based fats for long lasting energy and the dried fruit give you quick energy to use right away. By all means go for the variety with M&Ms, but I also love this variety pack that includes seeds and different dried fruits.

Just remember that whole or even large pieces of nuts can be a choking hazard for kids under four years old. Always remember to take a CPR course so you know what to do incase your child chokes. I recommend the Thrive Trainin Institute Choking Prevention Course for any parent or caregiver. Use code ALEX10 for $10 off.

Super Simple Snack Group = fruit and protein/fat

Cerebelly Smart Bars

road trip snacks for kids smart bars

If you’re looking for a another bar to add to your collection that doesn’t have any added sugar, Cerebelly Smart Bars have zero. Plus they also have 3 grams of fiber, fat, and protein each so overall it should keep them fuller longer than your standard granola bar.

Super Simple Snack Group = fruit, vegetable and grains

Roasted Chickpeas

kid friendly road trip snacks

Roasted chickpeas are another portable protein option, but also nut free for any families with nut allergies. It also hits the spot for a crunchy snack and checks the box for having fat, fiber, and iron too.

On the Go Beverages

As for beverages, I recommend sticking with water in a reusable water bottle .  Check out a few options in my Amazon shop that we love and use with our kids.  You can also pack shelf-stable milk and 100% fruit juice boxes for variety.

Of course, there are many more options out there and you should always remember to pack your favorites, even if it’s chips, cookies, or your favorite crunchy snack. These foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle too. The most important thing is variety and to pair foods together.

If you find that your child obsesses over sweets, treats, desserts, and other novelty foods read more here to help minimize the obsession.

Pairing balanced road trip snacks for kids

Many of these snacks would be a great option by themselves, but because of your child’s rapid growth and development, it’s advantageous to always use the Super Simple Snack Strategy (fruit or vegetable + protein/fat or grain).

This doesn’t mean you need to plan out a huge meal for their snack. Below are a few examples using the snacks recommended above.

road trip snacks for kids easy

How to pack road trip snacks for kids

When you’re traveling with kids, it’s important to be as organized as possible.  This means easy access to diapers, wipes, and snacks, lots of snacks.

To help make choosing a balanced snack on the road with whatever options you have easier, here are a few recommendations:

  • Prepack two snacks together in a reusable or Ziplock bag using the Super Simple Snack Strategy .  You can pack multiple snack bags and give them the choice of which combo they’d like. This way they automatically get a balanced snack and a choice.  Now whether they eat or not, that’s never guaranteed.
  • Categorize your snacks by food groups into different bins or gallon Ziplock bags; fruits and veggies in one and protein/fat and most likely grain in this case in another.  When it comes time for a snack break, ask them to pick one from each bag/container.

Check out how I packed my kids’ snacks when they stayed at their grandparent’s for a week over the summer.  My intentions were to help make things as easy as possible for Grandma and Grandpa.

While snacks may keep your kids busy for a little while, we love our Yoto Mini for car rides!

We use the Yoto Player when at home, but the Yoto Mini with our travel case , headphones , and the mini adventure jacket to keep it protected.

How to keep perishable road trip snacks for kids cold

The 42 road trip snacks for kids I recommended above do not need to be refrigerated, but adding perishable food items can definitely help increase the variety and overall options. Packing perishable road trip snacks for kids is definitely doable but requires more consideration with how it’s packed and stored.

Perishable foods that need to be kept cold like eggs, yogurt, cheese, sliced fruits and veggies should really be kept 40 degrees Farenheight or lower.  If your perishable road trip snacks for kids are kept above this temperature, they should be thrown out after four hours, I know, sad.

Why do they need to be thrown out after four hours?  They look fine, right?  Well, it’s not that you will get sick from these foods, but the opportunity for bacteria growth and the chances that you could get sick increase.  When you’re on a road trip with kids, the last thing you want to deal with is any illnesses.

To help keep your perishable road trip snacks for kids cold try these snack hacks:

  • Pack perishable road trip snacks for kids in a cooler with one or several ice packs.
  • Use frozen water bottles as ice packs to keep perishable snacks cool.
  • If packing yogurt tubes or pouches, freeze them first and use as an ice pack and eat once thawed.

Before you hit the road

Remember to keep in mind the Super Simple Snack Strategy when packing road trip snacks for kids. Variety is key. Try to include foods from these food groups:

  • Protein/fat

It’s likely most road trip snacks for kids will end up being fruits and grains. That’s simply because they’re easier to travel with, there are more shelf-stable options and kids love them!

And don’t forget to pack a beverage. Water is always a great option.

17 Best Road Trip Snacks for Kids

' data-src=

Snacks are mandatory when it comes to traveling, but what snacks travel well?

The best road trip snacks are ones that don’t melt easily, are mostly on the healthier side, and curb that hunger before the hanger sets in.

I’m not a nutritionist, but these snacks are what we pack for our road trips with our girls (ages 4 & 7 at the time of creating this list). My husband and I take road trips with our girls every month. Our weekend road trip distance can often take up to 6 hours to get to our destination.

We’ve gone on road trips with our kids to multiple National Parks, Las Vegas, and Monterey Bay. We’ve driven long distances for snowboarding weekends and dozens of camping trips. As Magic Key holders, we also make the 2-hour drive to Disneyland very often.

It’s amazing what a good road trip snack can do. I’ve had snacks help prevent meltdowns, stop whining, and help keep a positive attitude.

So let’s take a look at my favorite options and narrow down the best road trip snacks for your kids.

(And don’t forget, my girls aren’t babies or toddlers anymore so some of these snacks will need to be bite-sized or not given to your youngest ones)

Happy family on a road trip with two kids holding a book and a drawing tablet, enjoying each other’s company and ready with snacks for the journey.

Best Protein Snacks

With a sugary road trip snack, your kid might ask for another snack 10 minutes later. Protein snacks help them feel full for longer .

Nuts and dairy are great sources of protein for kids!

1. Kate’s Real Food Energy Bars

We love Kate’s Bars, and I’m not just saying that as an ambassador of the brand.

I don’t normally like protein bars. Many are pasty and taste like protein powder.

My husband loves tons of protein bars- he’s not a picky eater like I am. Our girls have been hit-or-miss with protein bars, but most of Kate’s Real Food flavors are approved on their list.

The bars are organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free, and made with honey. There are 2 servings per regular-size bar, or single-serving mini bars to help refuel, reenergize, and curb that appetite.

There are so many flavors with either peanut butter or almond butter. My favorites are lemon and coconut, mango and coconut, and peanut butter milk chocolate.

We take them in the car as road trip snacks, on planes, on hikes, for camping- you name it! The minis are a perfect size for our kids’ lunches.

2. Non-Perishable Yogurt Pouches

Sometimes your kid isn’t in the mood for a new flavor or chewing a granola bar, so it’s great to go back to a classic: yogurt.

It’s easy to eat with kid-friendly flavors like blueberry and strawberry. We get the GoGo Squeeze Yogurtz pouches because they are shelf-stable. They have 4 grams of protein plus calcium and vitamin D.

You can stick them in the cooler if you want, but they don’t need to be refrigerated. Store them in the cupboard, pack them in your road trip snack bag, and hit the road!

3. String Cheese

This travel snack can be a bit difficult. Some people say string cheese can last up to 2 hours without refrigeration while others say 2 weeks since it’s individually wrapped.

For me, I don’t like strong cheese that’s room temperature. For my girls, one likes string cheese and the other wants nothing to do with it.

If you know your kid likes string cheese, it’s one of the best road trip snacks you can pack. I would just stick it in the cooler and transfer it to the hotel fridge, but that’s up to you and your preferences.

4. Nuts & Trail Mix

Nuts or nut-based trail mix fits easily into travel-size containers. If your kid loves peanuts or almonds, those are great nuts to snack on for an extra protein boost.

Keep in mind: if your kid is too young to chew nuts or hasn’t tried them yet, don’t pack them. They can be a choking hazard for babies and toddlers or a possible allergy.

My girls don’t like most nuts, but they go crazy over pistachios.

It’s cheaper to buy pistachios already shelled, but I recommend splurging on pre-shelled pistachios or taking the shells off before your trip. They get very messy.

Stay away from trail mix with chocolate added if it’s going to be a warm-weather road trip because chocolate melts.

Extra Tip: Always have wet wiped in the car for messy snacks, carsick kids , or any other clean-up necessities.

5. Peanut Butter or Hummus

Peanut butter or hummus is a perfect road trip snack for kids.

Eat it with a spoon or dip vegetables in it. Carrot sticks, celery, or slices of bell pepper go great with hummus or peanut butter.

We forgot spoons for the travel peanut butter packets, but we had carrots.

Our girls thought it was so funny to use the carrots as a spoon, and they ended up loving the taste of peanut butter with carrots! Now it’s a road trip staple, and perfect for eating in the car.

The Dollar Tree has small cups of peanut butter or you can use these travel-size peanut butter squeeze packs .

Young child holding up two fried plantain chips, a tasty and crunchy alternative to traditional road trip snacks for kids.

Best Energy Snacks for Kids

If you’re on a long trip, you want your kids to sleep in the car, but you also want them to have energy for your adventures.

These snacks are great for on-the-go pick-me-ups, minimizing the “I’m hungry” whining between meals.

Fruits, vegetables, and honey are healthy sources of carbs that give your kid energy.

6. Honey Stingers Waffles

Honey Stingers Waffles are made with real honey. They are sweet and delicious and our girls can’t get enough of them.

On a snow hike one year, we stopped to snack on a few mini Honey Stinger waffles . The snack gave us all the extra boost we needed to dig us out of a tired, grumpy mood.

The best road trips are full of active adventures. It’s great to have a snack like these for on-the-go fun.

7. Carrots

Carrots are the best healthy snack for road trips with kids since they are a vegetable that doesn’t have to be refrigerated.

As long as your kids are old enough to eat carrots, I recommend always bringing some with you for a travel snack.

They go great with peanut butter and help balance out other snack options.

8. Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are another great option if you’re in the car. Cut them into long strips and keep them fresh in a car cooler .

Dip the bell peppers into hummus or peanut butter to add some extra protein to your kid’s snack.

Picky eater on your hands? Try the different colors of bell peppers.

They taste slightly different and it can be made into a game to guess what color your kid is eating.

Fun fact: the reds, oranges, and yellows have the most vitamins.

Open cooler filled with healthy road trip snacks for kids including oranges and milk boxes, ensuring nutritious options on the go.

Cuties are one of our favorite road trip snacks for kids because they take longer to eat.

You can give your kid one slice at a time to help make it seem like it’s more than one snack.

We use this trick all the time on the road but also while waiting in line at Disneyland .

Grapes are a road trip food you need to be careful with. It’s best to cut the grapes lengthwise unless you’re sure your kid can handle chewing whole grapes well.

That being said, they are refreshing whether they’ve been in a cooler or not. Grapes are easy to pack and travel with.

Just like the bell peppers, you can get different colors of grapes to mix things up and make snack time on a road trip more exciting.

11. Apples

Apples travel well and are refreshing, crunchy, and healthy road trip snacks.

If your kid is better at eating slices than the whole apple, then pre-cut them. Add a bit of lemon juice to help the apple slices not brown as quickly.

At ages 7 and 4, our girls love eating the whole apple. It’s a great snack for the care, especially after one of our family hikes .

Best Behavior Reward Snacks for Kids

I have a major sweet tooth my daughters inherited, but I know too much sugar makes them CRANKY. Do yourself a favor and use the candy sparingly so it’s more meaningful and you avoid that sugar-crash attitude.

Also, avoid chocolate. It melts into one big chocolate mess.

12. Skittles or Jelly Beans

Since candies like Skittles and Jelly Beans have multiple pieces per package, it’s easy to make it a longer-lasting snack.

We try to give candy as an occasional treat instead of a general snack. If your kid is being well-behaved in the car, it’s a fun snack to reward them with.

Predetermine how much candy you’re good with your kids eating on your road trip and think through the timing of when they can eat it.

13. Fruit Snacks

Fruit snacks are a favorite in our house, and also good travel snacks for kids to share or stretch out over time.

They fall into the extra treat category for us since most brands have added sugar and fruit flavoring.

Because our girls don’t eat fruit snacks all the time, they get extra excited when we bring them as a snack on road trips.

Other Snack Ideas

14. cheerios .

Cheerios go everywhere with us. The regular cheerios are low in fat and are made from whole grains.

It’s the perfect road trip snack for kids because it can work as breakfast on the go or a bite between meals.

The only problem is they aren’t exactly mess-free snacks. We gave the baby car seat to my sister when our daughter upgraded to a booster seat. When taking it out of our car we found a bucket full of Cheerios!

15. Raisins

One girl likes raisins, one doesn’t. They sure are a convenient travel-size snack for kids though.

Any dried fruit is a yummy option for younger and older kids, just make sure your little kids are good at chewing them before using them as a car snack.

You can get a whole jar to refill a travel container, or just buy the tiny snack-size boxes.

16. Fruit Pouches

We try to buy fruit pouches that also have vegetables in them. Our girls love them and the pouches are perfect for on-the-go adventures and in the car!

Most brands don’t have to be refrigerated, but it’s good to stick them in your cooler on warm-weather road trips. This makes it more refreshing, plus fruit pouches are great for kids and toddlers!

17. Crackers

There are so many crackers to choose from! We rotate through Goldfish crackers, wheat thins, peanut butter crackers, Triskets, and Ritz crackers.

You can also get crackers specifically for your baby or toddler. We used to love these teething crackers when our girls were younger.

They are a good car snack for kids but do leave a lot of crumbs behind. Just be ready for that!

Road Trip Drinks for Kids

Water is so important to bring everywhere for everyone.

You might think not drinking as much when you’re stuck in a car for hours will help prevent extra pit stops, but 1) that’s not good for you, and 2) you’re still going to have to make extra pit stops. Might as well stay hydrated.

We have tips on how to encourage kids to drink more water while hiking , but a cool water bottle is the best tip for family road trips.

Electrolytes

Kids don’t need anything other than water for hydration, but after a long day of tough hiking or extra running around, we like to give our girls some electrolyte drinks.

If you’re not sure what might be okay for your kid to drink, just stick with water and ask your pediatrician for recommendations if you think your family adventures will leave them needing to replenish their electrolytes.

The best electrolyte mix we’ve found is Ultima. If we’re splurging we might get the girls some Gatorade, but Ultima has zero sugar and is our preferred option. Ultima has so many flavors and we all love the taste.

This is coming from someone who usually hates electrolyte powder mixes. Ultima is delicious and has zero sugar with zero carbs.

Road Trip Snack Storage

Reusable zip bags or travel containers are our go-to snack to pack on road trips.

Our favorite is a stackable snack tower we got at Costco. It’s a great way to keep the snacks organized and have a little dish for them to eat out of.

Always have a snack bag and water bottles for the car ride separate from your trip’s food. This way you know what you can eat now without digging into the snacks for your vacation too early.

Plus, it’s a good opportunity to make the road trip snacks for your kids stand out and have something special on the long car ride.

Road Trip Snacks for Kids Summary

What are the best road trip snacks for kids?

Snacks that have a good source of protein like Kate’s Real Food mini energy bars or non-perishable yogurt pouches are great for kids on long car rides. It might be a few hours until the next meal, so the protein will help curb their hunger.

Sometimes an energy booster is needed. Fruit and veggies are easy road trip snacks. There’s only so much napping a kid can do in the car, so a treat with carbs will keep kids happy.

Cheerios are always my go-to snack for road trips or any trip and are good at any time.

Fruit snacks work great for rewarding good behavior. We try to avoid too much sugar so it’s appreciated when they do get a goody, and there’s less chance of a cranky sugar crash or upset tummy.

What snacks will you pack for your next road trip?

This cabin is amazing. I felt like I was in an adorably decorated tree house. Each room is so put together and has a color theme without being overdone. The owner mentioned it wasn’t really designed with kids in mind as there are 2 spiral staircases (one going up to the loft, one going down to another bedroom), but we decided it was nothing that a couple of baby gates and the watchful eye couldn’t handle. The girls absolutely loved the cabin- especially the fun stairs and the piano…

45 Healthy Road Trip Snacks for Kids & Toddlers

' src=

Road trips are fun, but they can also be stressful. As a mom (or dad), you have to pack all your gear for vacation plus snacks and food for the trip. Not to mention the great art of keeping your kids happy during the drive.  It can be hard enough just getting toddlers, especially out the door for a grocery shopping trip, let alone a long car ride. Here are some of my favorite healthy road trip snacks for kids !

What You’ll Need

If you are going on a long road trip with your family, packing some cold and refrigerated snacks is a great way to offer fresh and healthy snacks all day long. While you can get by on non-refrigerated snacks for shorter time periods, packing a cooler can be especially helpful for longer days or if you are packing lunch as well.

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click & make a purchase, I receive a commission! Read my full disclosure policy .

Here are some of the things we find helpful when packing travel food for our toddlers:

  • Cooler – Soft or Hard Coole r depending on the length of our trip and the activities involved.
  • Water Bottle – This is our favorite insulated toddler water bottle to pack for travel for small toddlers and this one is great for older kids .
  • Zip Top Reusable Silicone Snack Bags – We have both the piggy and the blue bear and my toddlers love these. They fit in cup holders well and I like that they hold their shape better than the cloth bags for small toddlers.
  • Reusable Bumkin Bags
  • Bento Boxes – These are great for prepacking lunches to eat on the go or as a picnic. We use either stainless steel or collapsable silicone bento boxes .
  • Stasher Bags to store produce and homemade snacks in.

Road Trip Snacks for Kids

These kid’s road trip snacks can work as travel food ideas for older kids or toddlers. Packing your own snacks and food will not only help you eat healthier on the road, but save you time along the road since you will not have to buy food as often.

Healthy Non-Refrigerated Packaged Snacks

First, we’ll start off with some of the best non-refrigerated snacks to bring. Many of these include healthy packaged snacks for toddlers .

  • RX Kids Bar
  • Dino Bars (great texture for younger toddlers as well)
  • Skout Bar Kid
  • Larabars – Be careful with child’s age as some do contain larger pieces of nuts.
  • Chewy Honey Oat Kid Kind Bars – At 5g added sugar these are higher than I usually serve my kids, but they are a fun road trip treat and something different for older kids.
  • Triscuits (check out my other favorite crackers for toddlers here)
  • Bitsy Brain Food Crackers – Opt for Cheddar Chia flavor for a low sugar option.
  • Simple Mills Almond Crackers
  • Annie’s Whole Wheat Bunnies
  • Snap Pea Crisps
  • Puffs (I love this grain-free brand best)
  • Unsweetened Applesauce or fruit pouches
  • Pirate’s Booty
  • Freeze-Dried Fruit
  • Peanut Butter (for spreading on crackers, produce, etc)

Refrigerated Packaged Snacks for Travel

If you are packing a cooler and ice or ice packs, it opens your options up a lot more for snacks you can pack especially by allowing you to pack a larger variety of protein and produce.

  • Stoneyfield Yogurt Pouches – While I typically buy unsweetened yogurt and sweeten it at home, these are great for travel. They do contain 4g added sugar so I do not recommend below age 2 .
  • Babybel Cheese or Cheese Sticks
  • Cottage Cheese Singles

Road Trip Snacks to Make

If you have some extra time to do some baking of food prep, here are some of my favorite homemade road trip snacks. It is always nice to have something homemade when you are going to be away from home for a while. These healthy recipes are perfect for kids of any age and even for adults!

  • Toddler Cookies
  • No Sugar Pumpkin Muffins
  • Toddler-Friendly Overnight Oats – Can make a great breakfast or snack if you have a cooler.
  • Homemade Trail Mix – Just ensure it is age-appropriate for your children (ie no large whole nuts for toddlers)

Produce to Pack for Road Trips Snacks

With produce be sure to cut appropriately given the age of your child . Here are some options to consider prepping and packing. I like to prep my produce and then pack in stasher bags for travel.

  • Grapes – Cut in half or quarters for toddlers age 4 and below.
  • Berries – Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries
  • Bananas – No prep needed!
  • Apple Slices – Can be a choking hazard to young toddlers. Follow guidelines.
  • Small carrot sticks
  • Cucumber sticks
  • Pepper sticks
  • Roasted veggies – It takes a bit more prep, but I have certainly cut up and roasted sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and other veggies before road trips, especially when my kids were babies and I needed healthy baby led weaning lunch options.

Road Trip Breakfast & Lunch Ideas to Pack for Kids

There are so many great options for road trip meals for kids as well. My personal favorite is to pack healthy sandwiches, fruits, vegetables and snacks that the whole family can enjoy and make a meal out of.

Here are a few of my favorite breakfast and lunch ideas to pack for a road trip:

  • Favorite Homemade Muffins
  • Overnight Oats
  • PB & J Sandwiches – I prefer to buy Crofters Just Fruit spread
  • Ham Roll-Ups (cream cheese middle)
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Crackers with cheese or peanut butter
  • Tuna Salad with Greek Yogurt
  • Chicken Salad
  • Fruit Salad
  • Carrot Sticks with Peanut Butter

Here are some of my favorite Healthy Toddler Lunch Ideas including packable ideas that may work for your road trip!

Tips for Packing Healthy Road Trip Snacks for Kids

Here are a few of my favorite tips to make packing road trip snacks for your little ones a bit easier and go a bit smoother.

  • Start by making a list of all the snacks you plan to take and then create your grocery list.
  • Pack more than you think you will need. It never hurts to have extra! You never know when you will end up needing to eat lunch late or even have an unexpected picnic. We have gone on many trips to National Parks or other rural areas where we ended up further than expected from restaurants and were grateful for our car stash!
  • Pack healthy snacks and lunch for kids and toddlers in separate baggies or containers so you can pass them out quickly when you stop.
  • Pack plenty of paper plates, napkins, spare baggies, trash bags, and eating utensils – you never know what you will need when you are traveling and eating on the go.
  • Don’t forget to consider choking hazards and appropriate safety measures if you are allowing your children to eat in the car. For example, we do try to pull over to eat at a picnic table, but sometimes this isn’t an option. I usually only feed my kids in the car once they are older and with low-risk foods depending on their age.
  • Don’t forget to pack easy snacks for yourself and your spouse! Adults need plenty to eat on long trips as well.
  • Bring extra water to use to refill their water bottles .

Kids Road Trip Snacks: 48 Ideas for a Peaceful Drive

This post may contain affiliate links. See the disclosure tab for more details.

Are you getting ready for a road trip with the kids ? Be sure to pack some snacks!

Road trips can be a lot of fun, but they can also be hard on little ones who get hungry.

It's important to have healthy, mess-free road trip foods available if you want to keep them happy.

Today I’m sharing some of the best kids road trip snacks that are nutritious, *mostly* mess-free and will keep everyone satisfied during your travels!

kids road trip snacks

Why Bring Your Own Road Trip Foods?

It may take some extra work, but here are the reasons to bring your own kids road trip snacks!

Buying food ahead of time can save you money by eliminating stops at gas stations or convenience stores for snacks.

The prices are usually marked up and will cost you much more.

Healthy Road Trip Snacks

If you are trying to eat a balanced diet, it can be difficult to do without planning ahead.

One way to stay on track with eating healthy is by purchasing snacks and meals in advance.

This way, you'll have plenty of healthy options to choose from when you're feeling hungry.

Plan for the Worst

Caught in traffic? Road trip taking much longer than expected?

Being prepared with a few road trip meals can keep everyone's hanger levels low.

Picky Eaters

Packing food for picky eaters can be challenging.

While you may want them to try new foods, it's often easier to stick with foods they already enjoy.

With a little creativity, you can still offer them a variety of healthy options that they'll look forward to eating.

Preparing Food for a Road Trip

kid friendly road trip snacks

Shopping for Road Trip Snacks

Prepare for your road trip by choosing a shopping day close to your trip.

Shopping about two days in advance ensures food stays fresh but it's not last minute.

Create a list of everything you need to pick up so you know you have enough to feed everyone on your trip.

Grabbing bulk items at Sams' Club or Costco can get your shopping done more efficiently.

How to Store Food for a Road Trip

kid friendly road trip snacks

Bag of Snacks

My preferred method of packing snacks is putting them in a small, organized tote bag.

It keeps all snacks together so the passenger is in charge of handing them out.

The bag is then stored behind the driver's seat and we can access it easily.

A Bento box is a great way to present several snacks to kids.

The separate compartments are perfect for adding multiple types of food so picky eaters have several choices in front of them.

It also seals shut so you are able to tip it without it spilling – perfect to hand to the bigger kids in the backseat on a road trip!

For an inexpensive road trip snack box, try a tackle box and fill it with 20+ different snacks!

This method risks spills, so make sure your kids are old enough to handle the responsibility.

Ziplock Bags

Baggies can be used in a few different ways.

You can bring a box of sandwich bags and fill bulk snacks as needed or you can portion out bags and have them ready to hand out when kids get hungry.

Either way, packing ziplock bags is a must!

In addition to sandwich size bags, gallon size bags are equally useful on road trips.

I give each kid a gallon size ziplock with all their snacks in it for the trip.

They can then choose to eat them whenever they want and pace themselves along the way.

Road Trip Snacks for Kids

kid friendly road trip snacks

Kids are pretty easy to shop for but are great at snacking.

I'm always sure to pack more snacks than I think I'll need because kids will eat out of boredom on long road trips.

Here are a few of our favorite snacks for the bigger kids.

Road Trip Snacks Non-Refrigerated

  • Granola Bars
  • Oranges or Mandarins
  • Bananas: store these in a safe place where they won't get bruised
  • Avocado: Bring a spoon to eat this one
  • Dried fruit or Freeze-dried fruit: Look for no sugar added
  • Peanuts or other mixed nuts
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Fruit Snacks
  • Rice Cakes (bite-sized)
  • Mini beef sticks

Road Trip Snacks for Toddlers

kid friendly road trip snacks

Planning a road trip with your toddler? Here are some great snack ideas to keep them happy and fueled during the journey:

  • Veggie straws
  • Applesauce pouches
  • DIY trail mix (based on their age and favorite finger foods)
  • Fruit strips
  • Cheese crackers
  • Graham crackers

Snack Cups for Toddlers

Toddler-friendly snack cups are a must for toddlers in the car.

With long car rides, snacks cups are the perfect way to make sure they can always have a snack when they need it.

Make sure you choose one that you are able to refill and attach to their car seat so it won't get lost!

Refrigerated Snacks

Sometimes it's worth it to bring a cooler or even plug in a tiny fridge to store some cold foods. This really opens up the variety of road trip foods you can bring.

  • Carrots and dip
  • Celery and peanut butter
  • Sliced peppers
  • String cheese
  • Babybel cheese wheels
  • Yogurt tubes or drinkable yogurt
  • Hard boiled eggs

Best Cooler Bag

The RTIC Soft Cooler 30 is my personal favorite for road trips.

With a capacity of 30 cans plus ice, this thing will keep your food and drink cool from start to finish!

It's lightweight durable, leak-free and sweat-free which is ideal for keeping in your car.

Portable Refrigerator

If you have a multi-day trip and can't maintain ice packs with a cooler, try a mini refrigerator .

These can plug right into the outlet in your car and keep all your kids road trip snacks cold without the mess of ice.

Road Trip Lunch Ideas

Choosing a stopping point for lunch is always a good idea.

You could go into a restaurant and stretch your legs.

The kids could definitely use a break if this is a long trip.

If you want to pack your lunch, here are some of the easiest options:

  • Uncrustables (Frozen peanut butter & jelly sandwiches)
  • Bean or beef burritos: Freeze these ahead of time and let them thaw
  • Lunchables – or homemade lunchables
  • Protein meal bars
  • Wrap with tuna packet
  • Bagel with almond butter
  • Chicken salad on a wrap
  • Deli meat sandwiches or wraps
  • Premade, frozen smoothies

healthy snacks for travel

Tips for Packing and Prepping Road Trip Meals

  • Decide how you will be handing out road trip foods: As kids get hungry or all at once before the trip
  • How will you serve the snacks: Bento box, tackle box, or individual packaging
  • Choose where to store the snacks on the road trip – a bag or tote? Convenient to the passenger or back seat?
  • Stock up! Plan your shopping trip and buy all the road trip meals you need!

Road Trip Ready with Kids Road Trip Snacks

Road tripping with kids can be fun if you're prepared.

Packing the right snacks is key to a successful trip.

If you’re not prepared, you may find yourself making expensive and unhealthy stops.

By packing your own snacks, you can control what you eat and save money.

The Best Road Trip Foods: Awesome Kid Snacks for Road Trips

When thinking of food to pack for a road trip, snacks are always a top priority!  There are three main reasons we pack kid road trip snacks, but basically, it is all centered on the idea that children are always hungry.

  • When kids are eating, it passes the time.  If only an hour after you leave home you hear a small voice saying, “I’m hungry!” the problem can be immediately solved as you can pass out snacks.  Without stopping the car.
  • If your kids are like mine, they will eat a lot.  So by having road trip snacks on hand, you can avoid spending a small fortune.
  • By avoiding stopping at roadside shops, we tend to eat much more healthily than if we were picking up items like ice-creams, candy, and sweets at each stop.  As long as we choose more food to bring on a road trip, that is!

If you are heading off on a trip with a toddler, take a look at Tips on how to survive a Road trip with toddlers .

The cost issue can apply to adults too.  Not long ago Master – aged 7 – observed that the adults in the family were buying 2 coffees a day, at a cost of about $5 each.  He calculated that added up to $20 a day – $100 for 5 days spent on holiday.  His next step was to propose that the kids be bought a toy of the same value.  Yes, he is way too smart for his own good!

The moral of the story is that we do have to model the behavior we want the kids to emulate.  Since then, I have been filling the thermos with coffee to save money.  I do actually find that the kids ask for purchased snacks a lot less when they see that I’m bringing coffee from home!

The Best Road Trip Foods: Awesome Kid Snacks for Road Trips

READ THIS before you Begin to Feel Guilty or Overwhelmed

Remember that this is an ideal road trip food list, containing ideas for kid snacks for your road trip.  No way is it set in stone.  As a solo mum of 3 kids, packing for road trips requires days of logistical planning.  I’m not only packing the bags but also filling the car in a series of geometric puzzles to make sure everything fits in (don’t forget the scooters and sand toys)!

Ideally, before any road trip with the kids, I’ll check the oil and water in the car, clean the windscreens, and occasionally even get the kids to help me wash the car.  But not always, as it will end up filthy after the trip anyway!  That’s before we even think about the food to pack for a road trip.

One of the most important – actually, I will say the number one MOST important thing to do before a road trip is to get a good night’s sleep.  After all, you are going to be driving for long periods of time and want to stay safe.  And – let’s face it, dealing with the cacophony in the back seats can be hard to cope with at the best of times, so you do want to be well-rested.  Ideally, with oodles of patience at your disposal!

So sometimes I’m super organized regarding good road trip food and have time to cut up all the vegetables and fruit the night before.  However, if I’m not, what’s the point in beating myself up about it?  They can eat food from disposable bags for once.  I know only too well that it’s not ideal for the environment, and nor is it a best practice – but me having a good night’s sleep is the most important thing!

If you need help with planning your road trip –  take a look at our Travel Hacks and Road Trip Essentials for Kids.   It contains amazing information and hacks for traveling with kids.

When you have a road tripper in your life, our detailed guide to road trip gifts might help you out with the tricky issue of picking the right present.

What about the Mess?

Offering kids snacks on a road trip is great for passing the time.  However, it can make a huge mess if you pick the wrong things.  Believe me, I’ve been there, done that – and tried to get the stains out of their clothes and the car seats afterward.

What sort of road trip snacks ideas are out there?  How can you make sure your car stays as clean as can be reasonably expected?

The Worst Food for a Road Trip Ideas

Firstly, let’s eliminate the worst road trip snacks for kids.  Potato chips will end up crumbled all over the seats and floor, as well as leaving greasy stains everywhere.  Chocolate that will melt into a sticky brown mess – say no more.  Ice cream, ditto.  Plus all of these are unhealthy, being packed with salt or sugar, and could also make some kids hyperactive.  As for soda – you can read more about that under drinks further down the page.

Get Stuck In – Make Sure the Kids are Involved in Cleaning up their Mess

This can you make you feel like you are nagging them, but we are teaching them to be self-sufficient human beings.  Eventually, they will have their own cars, and we’d like it if they knew how to keep them clean!

The Best Road Trip Foods: Awesome Kid Snacks for Road Trips

Keeping it Clean – Items to Add to your Travel Snacks for Kids Packing List

  • Napkins – A pack of paper napkins is a must.  We like to use recycled, unbleached, compostable napkins .  You can buy these in bulk, or in smaller packs that are ideal for the car.
  • Wet Wipes – Various brands of eco-friendly wet wipes are available, and these are a must for cleaning small fingers and faces!
  • Trash Container – A car trash can makes a great alternative to throwaway single-use bags.  There are plenty to choose from, and they hang on the back of the headrest for convenient waste disposal.  You can empty the can whenever you take a rest stop to keep the car smelling fresh.   Small compostable plastic bags are another alternative or can be used to line the garbage can.
  • Stain Remover Stick –  A stick-like Tide To Go is ideal to keep in the glovebox, just in case those accidents do happen!

How to Carry Food for a Road Trip

  • Cooler or Bag – A cooler for the car or cool bag is a must when you need to keep food and drinks fresh and chilled.
  • Ice Packs – Even in a cooler or bag, items won’t stay chilled for long unless you add some suitable ice packs .  Don’t forget to freeze them before you go!
  • Ziploc Snack Bags –   Ziploc Bags are ideal for storing food while on the move.  The open bag can even help to catch crumbs and spills while the snack is being eaten.
  • Rubbermaid Take Along Containers –  The small food containers available from Rubbermaid or other manufacturers are ideal for holding snacks for traveling with kids.

Good Food for Road Trips

In terms of food to pack for a road trip, snacks fall into six main categories.  These include fresh and dried fruit and vegetables, crackers or cookies, homemade foods, snack bars, fresh savoy items like meat and cheese, cereals, and snack bars.

Travel Snacks for Kids Packing List

Homemade Road Trip Snacks

Of course, homemade snacks for road trips are a great idea – but remember the tiredness issue mentioned earlier.  There is no point in having cute mini quiches if you will be exhausted from making them!  Some simpler suggestions are also included below.

  • Mini quiches.
  • Cooked pasta.   Add a light coating of pesto while it’s still warm – if your kids like it and don’t mind eating cold pasta.  Many do love pasta so much that they will even eat it cold.
  • Hard-boiled eggs.  Beware the smell.  You may want to open the windows for this one!
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.   You could use fun-shaped cutters to make these more attractive to younger kids.
  • Energy balls.  Many recipes are simple and contain just a few ingredients.
  • Homemade muffins.  They don’t have to be packed with sugar and are a good alternative to store-bought.
  • Granola bars.  If you like baking, these can be pretty easy to make.
  • Trail mix.   It’s easy to mix your own using nuts and dried fruit.

Fruit and Vegetables

  • Dried fruit .  The best dried fruit packs for kids contain foods like raisins, apples, apricots, mango, and pineapple.  Other options include yogurt raisins and fruit roll-ups .
  • Grapes.   Always cut grapes in half for kids aged under 4 as they may choke otherwise.
  • Pears .  Cut into sticks or chunks if you like, or leave whole.
  • Cucumbers.  You can buy mini ones or cut them into sticks.
  • Bell Peppers.  You can buy mini ones or cut them into sticks.
  • Carrots.  Buy the mini carrot sticks or baby carrots are ideal.
  • Sugar Snap Peas . The sweetness of these appeals to kids and they’re easy as they come ready to eat.

Other Fresh Foods

  • Cheese –  Cubed cheese or Babybels are the best options.
  • Mini salamis are very convenient to use.  Although perhaps not the best food to pack for a road trip if the smell will bother other people!
  • Diced chicken or ham.  You can cut these up quickly at home, and store them in a container or ziplock in your cooler box or bag.
  • Mini bagels or pitta.  These are less messy than other bread due to their more moist texture.

Cookies, Crackers, and Other Items

  • Teddy Graham Crackers.  Mini packs of teddy-shaped graham crackers make some of the best travel snacks – for toddlers in particular.
  • Fig Newtons.  These fig bars are also ideal car snacks for kids.
  • Rice crackers.  Packs of rice crackers are also great.
  • Ritz crackers.   Ritz Bits or crackers make a good savory snack.
  • Chex Mix.   Ditto for Chex mix !
  • Goldfish Crackers .  Fun fish-shaped snacks for kids.
  • Snack bars.  There are so many brands and types of kids’ snack bars to choose from, including the likes of Dino, Made Good, Nature’s Bakery, Perfect Kid, Kashi, RX, Kind Breakfast, and Larabars.
  • Beef jerky.  Beef jerky can be bought in snack packs and makes a good alternative to meat that must be kept cold.  We think that beef jerky is one of the best kid snacks for road trips.
  • Nuts.   These are packed with nutritional value and can be bought as an individual or mixed packs .
  • Pretzels .  These also come in small packs that are ideal as road trip food for kids.
  • These crispy corn puffs are good for nibbling in the car.
  • You can buy honey nut, rice, cinnamon, corn, or even chocolate Chex .
  • As with Chex, there are many varieties of Cheerios to choose from.
  • Fruit Loops .   Kids can even string together Fruit Loops to wear as a colorful, edible necklace!

Of course, treats are a must on vacation!  It is a vacation, after all.  As an in-car or rest break treat, why not look for something new to try with the kids?  The following options are also less messy than some choices.

  • A Pringles carton makes for less mess than a regular pack of potato chips!
  • Pirate’s Booty .  These cheese puffs are baked, not fried, so they are a little healthier.
  • Some kinds of popcorn are actually pretty healthy, but don’t tell the kids that!  The super sticky caramel corn is best avoided, though.
  • You can never go wrong with Haribo Gummy Bears and snacks where kids are concerned!
  • These sweet treats on a stick last a while and can be good to suck when traveling up and down hills to help with kids’ ears popping.

You can also save large amounts of money by bringing your own treats.  Knowing where to buy these in bulk or at discounted prices can be key.  For example, my kids are rather partial to Drumstick ice-cream cones.  These are absolutely delicious but are sold for about $6 at most stores.  Going to a supermarket instead means buying a family pack of 4 for the exact same price of $6!

Drinks for a Road Trip with Kids

Drinks for a Road Trip with Kids

Water only – why this is essential.

When considering the best road trip food, don’t forget about drinks.  Or perhaps I should say drink – singular – because we only allow water when traveling by car.  Why?  Because for this short time only, it’s best not to let the kids drink too much.

Children’s bladders aren’t the biggest, which means you can waste a lot of traveling time in stopping to use the bathroom.  To avoid them drinking more than they need to, we don’t take fruit juices, soda, or any other sweet drinks that will tempt them into drinking more than necessary.  A bottle of water allows them to remain sufficiently hydrated.  They can always enjoy a flavored drink as a treat later on, once you get to your destination.

Also bear in mind that if the kids spill a sugary drink, it will make a horrible, sticky mess in the car (been there done that too).  Just imagine the smell if they spilled a milk-based drink – you might just end up crying over split milk!

If you want cold water for later in the journey, you could freeze bottles the night before setting off.

The Best Road Trip Snacks for Toddlers

The Best Road Trip Snacks for Toddlers

When I think of road trip snacks for a 1-year-old or toddler, – I think of:

  •  Choke hazards!

Some of the suggestions on a typical food for a road trip list just don’t work so well for toddlers.  For example, grapes need to be cut up small – or at least in half for toddlers to avoid the risk of choking.

Blueberries can stain their clothing and your car’s upholstery badly – and have you ever bitten into a cherry tomato and had the seeds squirt all over the place?  Multiply that by 4 cherry tomatoes and the back of your car will never look the same again!  Mandarin oranges can also be messy, and the juice does stain.

Toddler Food for your Road Trip list

Packing good road trip snacks for toddlers is essential if you want them to be happy!  It also requires more thought, as they are both messier and more likely to choke.  You can use the suggestions above for inspiration.

For example, the best road trip snacks for kids under four should NOT include nuts or whole grapes.  Cereals, crackers, and cookies are great, but there will be some mess to clear up! Fruit, vegetables and other fresh foods are good too.  Dried fruit is perfect, as it allows them to nibble on something sweet but not too sugary.  Don’t forget to take a treat or two as well.

If you want to know how to keep toddlers and one-year-olds entertained, do check out our post on the Best Travel Toys For 1-Year-Old .

Top Tips for Packing Family Road Trip Snacks

It’s all very well having a list of long road trip food ideas, but what about doling out the spoils?  We have a couple of useful tips here for doing just that.

Solo Cups.   These are great to use for dishing out snacks and could be washed and reused if you want to do that.

Snack bags .  A snack bag per child makes them feel as if they have their fair share, and they also have control over when the goodies get eaten.  This could be included as part of a kids’ backpack for the journey, filled with snacks, toys, and other entertainment items.

The Verdict – Packing Food for a Road Trip

Packing snacks for kids on a road trip is an absolute must.  It keeps them busy for a while, as well as fed.  There are plenty of options, whether you plan for buying food in bulk before you set off and prep it before sealing into Ziplock Bags or reusable food containers.

Don’t be put off by the word ‘prep’.  This can be as simple as cutting cheese, ham, or fruit into cubes or transferring a handful of cereal to an airtight container.  Some of the best road trip food ideas can even be prepped by older kids themselves, who could help in making up snack bags for themselves and any younger siblings.

Remember – you’re on vacation!  So pack a few treats and make life as easy for everyone as possible.  Even with minimal time for organization, this can help to ensure the whole family has a fun-filled trip, including YOU!

the best healthy road trip snacks

There’s something so great about taking a long road trip…until the tummies start grumbling and the kids get bored.

Instead of eating your way through gas stations and fast food restaurants, pack a bunch of healthy snacks to satisfy the whole family.

This list of the best road trip snacks includes healthy homemade options, like naturally-sweetened muffins and make-ahead breakfast bars, and healthier options (that still taste great!) that you can grab from your local grocery store or a convenience store.

Healthy Cold Lunch Ideas

Benefits of Healthy Road Trip Snacks

  • Save money : Those easy snacks at the convenience store add up, especially for fresh produce or healthier options. Save a little cash by planning ahead!
  • Limit the added sugar:  If your kids aren’t used to eating a lot of processed food, the extra sugar can really affect their moods! Keep things mellow by reducing the sugar content and avoiding unhealthy fats, preservatives, and additives.
  • Happy tummies:  Processed convenience foods are often tasty, but usually filled with ingredients that can upset stomachs. Everybody knows, that’s no fun for a long drive!

Car Snack Tips for Young Kids

  • Before you leave home, pack snack bags with your favorite healthy road trip snacks. To reduce waste, you can use silicone bags or a small container.
  • Use bento boxes or  stainless steel lunch boxes  to keep your kids’ snacks separated and organized. Even better, they’ll be able to serve themselves!
  • Fill a small cooler with  ice packs  & snacks so your kids can serve themselves during long car rides.
  • Give everyone a reusable water bottle, and bring jugs of water to refill anytime.
  • During the drive, offer dry or easy-to-clean snacks kids can eat with their fingers. Save messier items that require utensils for a rest stop. Be sure to pack some hand wipes as well!

Is it safe to snack in the car?

Unfortunately, as convenient as it is, feeding children in the car can pose a risk for choking. The safest option is to stop the car and have your road trip snacks when the car isn’t moving. That way, you’re readily available to assist if there is a choking incident. However, as a parent, I know that sometimes there are circumstances where you need to feed your child in the car.

If you opt to provide snacks to your child when the car is in motion, follow these safety tips:

  • Never nurse your baby while the vehicle is moving. This practice is hazardous for both the infant and the mother.
  • Take into account if your child is seated in a reclined position. It’s advised that you refrain from offering snacks to children under the age of two due to their reclined seat.
  • Steer clear of sticky foods such as peanut butter, cream cheese, or fruit snacks.
  • Avoid offering raw vegetables and fruits like carrot or apple slices .
  • Exercise caution when it comes to hard candies and lollipops within the car, as they present a significant risk of choking.

If the snack attack hits, focus on safer snacks in a moving car like applesauce pouches or yogurt tubes.

How do you create a healthy snack?

When discussing nutritious snacks with my children, we emphasize combining protein and/or healthy fats and with a source of fibre-rich carbohydrates. This combination helps you to feel full for longer, while also providing more energy.

In preparation for a road trip, we make an effort to include protein choices that can subsequently be matched with fibre-rich items. For instance, if our kids want crackers, we’ll pair it with cheese or peanut butter. Similarly, if they request a piece of fruit, we’ll also provide them with yogurt or another protein source.

Try these banana oatmeal pancakes or 3-ingredient protein waffles !

Pro Tip: Prevent Travel Tummy!

Traveling can really affect your digestive system. To keep things moving, offer snacks high in fiber, like whole grains, fresh produce, nuts, and seeds. Don’t forget to chug that water too to keep everything moving!

Favorite Healthy Roadtrip Snacks from the Store

If you need something quick you can grab at a convenience store, look for these healthy options. Grab some at your next stop!

1. Unsweetened Applesauce Pouches

Made without added sugar and packaged in easy-to-use pouches, these are so convenient and make the best travel snacks!

2. Freeze-Dried Fruit

Crunchy and sweet without any added sugar or oils, freeze-dried fruit is the best road trip food since it’s shelf stable and doesn’t easily perish. Plus, it doesn’t result in sticky hands!

3. Whole Grain Crackers

Grab a package of whole-grain crackers for an easy snack on the go. Look for lower sodium crackers wherever possible to help prevent dehydration.

4. Cheese Sticks

String cheese is a good source of protein, yet has a mild flavor, so it’s a great option for picky eaters.

5. Lower Sugar Dry Cereal

You don’t need milk to enjoy cereal! It makes a nice crunchy snack you can easily eat from a cup or bag.

6. Baked Sweet Potato Chips

Baked veggie chips are an excellent alternative to potato chips! Sweet potato chips are naturally sweet, so they appeal to little kids.

7. Energy Bars

Choose any low-sugar energy bars whether those are granola bars, protein bars, or anything else. They’re big enough to hold you over before your next meal. Ideally, you’ll want to look for bars with at least 4 grams of fiber and less than 8 grams of sugar per serving.

8. Veggie Straws

Look for crunchy snacks made from veggies instead of cornmeal or flour. Some of these sneak in a lot of sugar, so always check the ingredients list first.

9. Beef Jerky

Jerky can be a great road trip snack but avoid high-sugar options like teriyaki.

10. Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are a great snack! Give smaller kids shelled roasted seeds or offer older kids whole sunflower seeds (and a place to collect the shells).

11. Deli Turkey or Mini Pepperoni Sticks

Look for uncured low-sodium meats for an excellent savory option.

12. Animal Crackers

These are classic car snacks! They aren’t too small or crumbly, so they shouldn’t make too big of a mess. Annie’s Bunnies can be a good option!

Serve unsweetened yogurt for a quick, healthy snack! Yogurt cups can be topped with granola or fresh fruit and served at a rest stop. Serve yogurt tubes when you’re on the road. You can even freeze them ahead of time for a cool refreshing treat!

14. Peanut Butter & Veggie Sticks

Peanut butter has healthy fats to satisfy you, and it tastes great as a dip for celery sticks, baby carrots, or sliced apples. The best way is to portion some peanut butter into small cups or bring these and offer a baggie with the fruits or veggies.

15. Fruit Snacks or Bars

Be careful with this one! Most fruit snacks are full of corn syrup. Look for naturally sweetened options made with real fruit, like these  fruit bars .

16. Apple Chips

Apple chips are a great convenient alternative to fresh apple slices and you don’t have to worry about them perishing since they’re already dry and crunchy!

Nuts are easy to munch on and are a great source of healthy fats. Choose your favorite nuts (preferably unsalted) like cashews, pistachios without the shell, almonds or peanuts. Avoid serving nuts to children under the age of 4 as they may be a choking hazard.

18. Drinkable Yogurt

Did you know that you can now purchase yogurt drinks with no added sugar? They’re naturally sweetened with fruit puree and are basically like a yogurt smoothie packaged up in small easy-to-pack containers perfect for the road.

19. Granola Bites

Granola bites are like mini crunchy energy bites and often come in a variety of flavors. We like the “ Made Good ” brand since they often are nut-free, lower in sugar and incorporate veggies as well!

20. Nut Butter Packets

Nut butter packets (we love these ones from Yum Butter ) offer a convenient option when travelling. They can be enjoyed directly from the packet or paired with sliced apples or bread during rest stops. The resealable squeeze design eliminates the need for utensils, meaning more convenience and less mess!

Remember that whole nuts, popcorn, and roasted chickpeas are choking hazards for young children. Avoid serving these options to children under the age of 4 years old.

My Feeding Philosophy

I get it. Feeding kids can be tough. I’ve learned that the key to getting kids to try new foods is to keep it fresh and exciting, get them involved, and inject a little enthusiasm and creativity into how you serve them up. Above all else, don’t give up. If you’re serving balanced meals and snacks throughout the day, then you’re doing a good job!

30+ healthy road trip snacks for kids.

kid friendly road trip snacks

Perfect toddler & child snacks on the move

I’m not gonna lie; I’m the type who’d happily like to binge on a big family share pack of sweets when we’re on a long road trip.

But as any well-travelled mamma will tell you, there’s definitely a point where you’ll regret giving your kids too much sugar on long journeys.

As I am looking to vastly improve my own healthy snacking habits this year, I have been researching what is best for the kids, too, both for convenience and ease to access (trust me, not all countries are the same when it comes to snack food availability!).

And we know there are fussy eaters too. We have that one who will seriously only eat one brand of rice cake!  We hope this guide will help you plan ahead for even your fussiest ones when trying to prepare a road trip snack bag to please the whole family.

This post is part of our family travel advice series – you can check out everything from breastfeeding on the move to dealing with jet-lagged kids

Our top 30 road trip travel snacks.

Am I the only one whose kids actually prefer their cereal with no milk? I can’t stand the idea, but they love it! Cheerios with Honey have proven a favourite (other’s call them O’s), but they’ll even much away on rice crispies, and corn flakes.

Granola bars

Sadly, only one of mine will eat an oldie but a goldie, so I’ve not taken to baking them myself, but these are packed full of good energy food. Bake your own to the perfect mix, or shop-bought is also fine; just check how much added sugar is in them.

healthy snacks granola bars

Squeezable yogurt tube

Have them from the fridge or freeze them overnight ready for an icy treat. These are easy shop bought but be warned depending on the age group can be messy!

Another super easy win for the road, you can buy in small individual packets, but the cost does significantly add up. Its worth a few minutes to divide them into your own containers, and you can mix them to trail mix too (see below).

String cheese

Ok these are a little too processed for my liking and I feel a lot of plastic waste, but needs must this one is a snack box filler that they can have some fun with. Great for little ones practising their fine motor skills and packed with protein.

Squeezy fruit packets

Don’t think that this is just the domain of baby food, no these handy little packets can also suit your toddlers and little kids for a quick and easy meal on the go. They are TSA approved as well if you’re looking for little treats on a flight.

Individual snack size or a family share bag, these are a great filling snack.  Just be aware of packets that are over salted, not ideal for kids.  And nuts are a no-no sharing transport with others such as on a plane.

NB – make sure you’ve given your kids nuts before travelling!

kid friendly road trip snacks

Not just a fun treat at Japanese restaurants, these are really becoming a mainstream snack now. High in iron, protein and fibre, this superfood snack can keep hands busy – just be prepared for where the scraps go if they’re fresh! (Though you can also buy just the beans in packets now – takes away some of the fun but a lot cleaner!).

Dried fruit

Finally, something my Mr Fussy DOES love, probably because they are so naturally full of sugar but he has wised up that they are fruit so allowed in Mum’s health snack regime! All in moderation to avoid upset tums – try apricots, mango, apple, pear, pineapple.

A step on from the dry cereal, trail mix is where you can add some filling extras such as choc chips, coconut, raisins, and a variety of nuts and fruits – cranberries are great! We make a big bag of the basics then each kid can add their favourite extras to their own little snack bag.

kid friendly road trip snacks

When you’re on the road, many highway service stops will also sell this (under varying names) as grab an go snack bags; we try to veer the kids to these over sweet packets – with varying success!

Cut veggies

Ok, yes, once again, only one of my 3 has ever taken his idea on, so don’t worry if your carb-loving kid’s baulk at this idea. For the more willing tot though, you simply can’t go past this as your healthiest road trip snack. Try cucumber, peppers and carrots, make it colourful and fun.  If you can add a dip too – try hummus or a capsicum dip (be warned though this can add to the mess factor!)

Fresh cut fruit

If we can’t convince them on the veggies, then fruit is your next best friend – though be aware some fresh fruits brown easy. We love apple slices, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, melon.

health snacks fresh fruit

Take it as you like it plain, sweat, salty (or both), a super easy snack to whip up in a big share bag or individual-sized serves. It is high and fibre and packed in whole grains, so as long as you go easy on the toppings, it’s actually an incredibly healthy snack.

Animal crackers

Cute, fun shapes in a moderately healthy dry biscuit? Yep, even your fussy ones are probably going to crack at the offer of a biscuit. Little ones especially will have fun picking out their favourite animals.

These are the big, circular rice snacks. Gone are the days when these taste like cardboard; they’re now available with a huge variety of flavours to make them more interesting. Packed full of fibre, they are a good one to improve energy levels – though can leave quite the crumbly mess.

Rice crackers

These are smaller and harder than rice cakes and can come in plain, lightly salted and a variety of more exotic tastes, far more healthy than a crisp packet. As an extra tough, why not prepare them with a little peanut butter?

These are absolute winners with our kids! They can be a little on the salty side, like all things in moderation, but they certainly add some fun to your kid’s snack packs and when we serve them on a mixed tray, they are always the first to go.

All different shapes and sizes – though they can be salty so water at the ready and be prepared for pee stops!!

healthy snacks pretzels

Hard-boiled eggs

Best pre-peeled, some kids will eat them on their own, or you can add them easily on top of bread or other crackers, such as those we’ve listed above.

For those that can eat pork, these are simply superb little snack fillers. Keep them in their individual wrappers until they’re about to be eaten as they do have a strong smell. (Or Beef sticks are another great alternative)

Veggie crisps

Ok, these are maybe more my favourite than the kids! But a great alternative to your traditional potato chips in a packet. You can also look out for apple crisps, banana crisps may be more to some kids’ taste.

And don’t forget drinks!

You will want a reusable drinks bottle for every child (and adult!) that can be refilled at pit stops along the way. You can also pack as a special treat a chilled juice pouch; we normally save this up as a special treat as they can still be quite sugary, and time it when we know a pit stop is coming up!

Extra special treats on a long road trip

These are definitely on the sugary end of the scale and should be used in moderation! When you are getting constant “nos” and snack time refusal, though, you may want to mix in a couple of these extra treats to help them go that extra mile:

Fruit Roll-ups / Fruit Leather

These pre-packaged snacks are great for grab-on-the-go, but we warned “fruit” isn’t always one of the key ingredients.

Mini cookies

Mixing in a few extra mini choc-chip cookies can be a fun addition to their snack pack.

Fruit Loops

These fit in the dry cereal and whole grains category but are definitely at the more sugary end of the scale so include them sparingly.

healthy snacks fruit loops

These chewy little treats are what we keep up our sleeve for special rewards, and also an awesome one for keeping in your handbag ready for flights so kids can suck on them for take-off and landing to help equally ear pressure – you can see more of our flying with kids tips here .

How to transport your snacks – To share or go it alone?

When we’re travelling I hate having too many individual bags and boxes that need cleaning at every stop. With such individual tastes and degrees of fussiness – and to avoid fights over contamination of the box because there was meat or cheese in it (I suspect I have a future vegan on my hands!) – I think individual serves work best.

And as cute as those mixed tray snack boxes look on Pinterest, it only takes the back seat of your car being decorated with them once by an over enthusiastic toddler to remind you it’s simply NOT the practical way to serve snacks on the go.

If you are still insistent on giving snack boxes to kids in a single-serve box, do monitor how many snacks they are having. You are better off using snacks to stave off the munchies at appropriate times in your trip than all-day grazing.

Perhaps set an hour or mile markers when snacks can be opened or a fresh round handed out. Allow the more sugary snacks when you’re close to stopping points so the energy can be burnt off, and avoid over filing before a lunch or dinner stop so you can be guaranteed they’ll eat some proper meals too.

And it’s always wise just to keep a little something extra hidden in your handbag or out of site in case of emergencies!

Healthy and fun ideas to enjoy while you’re on the move

Do kids seriously grow an extra stomach the second your car’s wheels hit the tarmac?

At home or in a child’s usual routine, it’s much easier to have structured meal times and deny the repeated whining for a snack. However, when you’re in a confined space and hurtling along at 65 miles an hour trying to keep to a schedule… you want to be prepared!

Our Top 5 Tips for Packing Road Trip Snacks for Kids

Why Are Road Trips So Tiring? (And How to Fight It!)

Essential Safety Tips For Driving in the Desert

Essential Tips for Planning The Big Lap Australia (With Map)

  • Eat Well! Keep the snacks as healthy as possible; Your aim with a car trip snack is to satisfy bellies until the next proper meal stop. If you give kids highly sugared snacks, they will likely have their energy peak while strapped into the car. Aim for foods that give longer-lasting energy and save sweets for special treats.
  • Portion Control . Keep the number of snacks you give kids in one go contained. If they open up a delightful big bento box of treats all in one, go you’ll find everything’s gone before lunch, they don’t eat lunch, then they whine all afternoon for something more!
  • Fresh or Packaged? Think practically about what will keep and what prep tools you will have when traveling. A weekend away, you can certainly bake up a storm and have lots of fresh homemade goodies to go. However, a multi-day road trip without a fridge or stove can limit your options.
  • Provide Choices . Yep, that same kid that ate 4 rice cakes yesterday can’t stand them today. We all have our moods and moments, so it’s wise to have a range of options in your goodies bag each day.
  • Bin it or wash it? It’s essential to have a cleanup process in place on a long trip. If food comes in disposable wrappers, have a trash bag system . Containers to wash? You’ll need a separate spot for empty containers, so they don’t leak and mess through the rest of your supplies, as well as a few small washing tools with you.

After countless hours on the road with our kids, here are the finger food snacks that we’ve found work best for a family road trip.

Top 40 Road Trip Travel Snacks For Kids

Kar's Nuts Variety Pack Trail Mix Snacks - Sweet 'N Spicy Mix, Yogurt Apple Nut, Mango Pineapple Mix, Individual Packs (Pack of 24)

Our favorite make-ahead road trip snack is to prepare our own trail mix. What you fit in is totally up to you but could include various nuts, raisins, and other dried fruits, seeds, and grains and even throw in a few extras like desiccated coconut or choc chips.

Make them up into portion-sized treat bags and share them out as you go. You can also find some fun and interesting packet trail mixes too.

Plain, buttered, salty, caramel, sugared – however you like it, the base ingredient here is pretty simple! Popcorn is a super easy snack to pop in your motel microwave at the start of the day, then loads of munching fun whenever your kids start to feel famished.

Veggie Sticks

Premium Ceramic Knife 4 inches, Kitchen Paring Knife - Ultra Sharp Fruit Knife for Vegetable Food with Hippo Shaped Cover, Small Portable Pairing Knives Food knife with Sheath, Green, by Jonbyi

Packed with nutrients and delivering a satisfying crunch, mix and match to your kids’ taste for a colorful rainbow treat in the car. Try cucumber spears, sliced peppers, celery sticks, and carrots (just remember you’ll need to pack a sharp travel knife if you’re preparing snack boxes on the move).

You can add a dip with veggie sticks too to make them more interesting, but be warned this does increase your chances of sloppy spillages!

Cherry Tomatoes

These sweet little treats are the perfect healthy road trip snack, on their own or in a snacking box. Slice them in half so there’s no choking hazard.

Fresh Cut Fruit

Humangear GoBites Uno Portable Silverware Utensils Camping Gear Accessories Kitchen Equipment for Cooking or Lunchbox, 1-Pack, Gray

Fresh fruits are arguably one of the best natural sweet treats you can give kids. Understandably, though, in a car, chopping an apple, peeling a banana, or dissecting an orange isn’t always so easy. If you’re going with fresh fruits, try and chop ahead and avoid overly juicy chunks. (Looking at you, sorry, watermelon!) Including a little spork is helpful.

Raisins & Craisins

Sun-Maid Raisins Seedless. 1.33 OZ, pack of 6 (36 total)

Another super easy win for the road. Raisins and Craisins (dried cranberries) can be purchased in small individual packets, but the cost does significantly add up. If you can buy a bulk pack for mixing with your trail mix or dividing them into their own containers you’ll save a lot.

A super simple snack for when you’re on the move (and especially good for when you’re making an early morning start). Honey Nut Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes, and Corn Pops all make great finger food snacks for the car that can be consumed without milk.

Granola Bars

Nature Valley Protein Granola Bars, Snack Variety Pack, Chewy Bars, 15 ct

Bake granola bars yourself ahead of time or store-bought (but do check how much added sugar is going in). These are a wonderful, chewy energy treat packed with goodness to fill grumbly bellies on the road.

Veggie Straws

Sensible Portions Garden Veggie Straws, Sea Salt, Snack Size, 1 Oz (Pack of 24)

Rather than traditional highly salted potato crisps, introduce your kids early to the fun flavors of veggie straws! Although not AS nutritious as fresh veg, they have way less sodium and more fiber than potato chips, and are a lot more colorful!

Squeezable Yogurt Tube

YOPLAIT YOGURT GO-GURT FOR KIDS 16 TUBES VALUE PACK STRAWBERRY SPLASH & COOL COTTON CANDY PACK OF 2

I can’t believe after how many post-road trip car cleans I’m still going to recommend these – but they are a great fun travel snack! Keep your yogurt tubes chilled, and if you can, freeze them overnight for a special icy treat in summer! Be ready with the Kleenex though…

String Cheese

Natural String Cheese Low Moisture Part-Skim Mozzarella. Walnut Creek. 12 oz., 12.0 Ounce, 12.0 ounces

I don’t love how processed and packaged these are, but they definitely DO keep little hands busy on the road. Packed with calcium and protein, cheese strings are a fun little snack and so easy to add to a snack box.

Jack Link's Beef Jerky, Original - Flavorful Meat Snack for Lunches, Ready to Eat Snacks, Great Stocking Stuffers - 7g of Protein, Made with Premium Beef - 0.625 Oz Bags (Pack of 5)

Make your own or pre-packed and store-bought? However you like your jerky this is a great protein-filled and flavorsome special treat, finger-sized pieces make them ideal for the car.

Amazon Brand - Happy Belly Mini Twist Pretzels, 40oz

Whatever shape or size you prefer your pretzel in, these are a great salted snack ideal for snack boxes.

Oh! Nuts Trail Mix Snack Pack - Healthy Meals for Office, Travel, School, Hiking - Rich in Protein, Antioxidants - Assorted Box of 12 Individual Bags (Dried Fruits & Nuts)

A family pack to share, in a bento box, or an individual snack size – nuts are a GREAT energy-rich snack for kids. Look for mixed nuts, peanuts, and almonds – just check how much added salt (Always check there are no nut allergies before traveling!)

Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame, Sea Salt, Vegan, Gluten-Free, Kosher, and Non-GMO, Crunchy Snack for Healthy Snacking, 100 Calorie Snack Pack (12 Boxes)

High in iron and protein and packed with fiber! You can buy these pre-packaged or as a fresh treat. Parents looking for a healthy road trip snack, here is your solution!

Dried Fruit

Mavuno Harvest Organic Dried Fruit Variety Pack | Dried Mango, Pineapple, and Jackfruit | Healthy, Vegan, No Sugar Added, Non GMO Snacks for Kids & Adults | 2 Ounce, Pack of 3

Naturally bursting with sweet goodness, we love sharing a bag of dried fruits. In moderation, of course, as too many can upset bellies. Try a huge variety of fruits including apricots, mango, apple, peach, pear, pineapple, and paw paw.

Animal Crackers

Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers 48oz jug

Cute and fun little crackers in the shape of your kids’ favorite animals, need we say more! Have fun lucky dipping and swapping and trading, they may even eat them too!

Quaker Rice Cakes Variety Bundle - Pack of 3 Flavors, Chocolate Crunch, Apple Cinnamon, Caramel Corn

A wonderful crispy treat for kids that’s light on the calories. Long gone are the days where these were a horribly boring snack for dieters, rice cakes come in many varieties packed with flavor – though be warned, these ones can leave the car in a bit of a crumbly mess in their car seats!

Rice Crackers

KA-ME Original Rice Crackers 3.5 oz, Authentic Asian Ingredients, Certified Gluten-Free, No Artificial Flavors/Colors, Non GMO, Served with Asian Salmon, Cream Cheese, Egg & Tuna Salad, Asian Guacamole, Hummus & Many More

These small, round crackers are harder than rice cakes but deliver a lovely crispy, salty treat. You can get rice crackers or rice thins in a variety of flavors to make them a little more interesting, or if you trust the kids with a dip in the car they are the perfect dipping cracker.

Variety Crackers Snack Bulk Packs - Honey Maid - Cheeze it - Goldfish - Animal Crackers and more. (Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Baked Snack Crackers, Var)

The perfect finger-sized salty treat for the car, Goldfish are ideal for mixed trays or just eat your favorite flavor all on its own! Watch the sodium levels though, the more kids eat, the more they then drink!

Chex Mix Classics Snack Mix, 1.75 Ounce (Pack of 30)

If you’re going for a salty pre-packaged snack, then Chex Mix really hits the spot with kids. They come in salty, sweet, and savory flavors and a variety of different shapes including pretzels and mini bread sticks.

Peanut Butter Sandwich

Keeping it super simple, a swipe of peanut butter between two slices of bread can be the perfect filling energy snack between meals. The only question is, crusts on or off?

Hard-boiled Eggs

Good for the start of your trip, where you can freshly boil eggs. We pre-peel them too to prevent too much mess in the car. Eat them on their own or with some crackers, the perfect protein hit.

Energy Balls

A lovely homemade treat you can prepare in advance with the kids. Naturally sweetened with honey, these pack a powerful pick-me-up. And when the kids have helped make them, they’re more inclined to try their own creations!

Pepperoni/Pepperami

Old Wisconsin Snack Sticks, Pepperoni, 6-Ounce Package

These chewy little meat treats are an absolutely super filler snack. Keep them in their wrapper until they’re ready to eat though, they do omit a rather strong smell!

Rolled Sandwich Meats

You don’t have to eat sandwich meat in a sandwich! Cos, you know bread is fine, meat is fine, but together?! They are a great quick and easy treat and keep well in the car with some cooling. We look for multi-packs in the supermarket with different types of ham and turkey.

Pringles Potato Crisps Chips, Lunch Snacks, Office and Kids Snacks, Grab N' Go, Original (12 Cans)

The convenience of the cylindrical container releasing one chip at a time makes these the road trip crisp of choice around the world! Far fewer crumbs to deal with than regular bags of chips and as they say, once you pop, you can’t stop!

Mini Bagels

A simple and filling treat. If your tot prefers a little more flavor you can add some cream cheese and jelly or whatever their favorite filling is.

Fruit Pouches

GoGo SqueeZ Fruit On The Go Variety Pack, Apple Apple, Apple Banana, & Apple Mango, 3.2 oz. (20 Pouches) - Tasty Kids Applesauce Snacks - Gluten Free Snacks For Kids - Nut & Dairy Free - Vegan Snacks

Don’t think these are just for babies! Well, into our toddler and preschooler years food pouches were one of the most convenient and easy-to-grab meals on the go for our kids. The fact they can suck on them straight from the packet tends to minimize mess, and unlike fresh fruit, refrigeration is not essential.

Some Slightly Sweeter Road Trip Treats

These all make great road trip snacks but are higher in sugar. Include them in your snack arsenal in moderation.

Fruit Roll-ups / Fruit Leather

Betty Crocker Blastin' Berry Hot Colors Fruit Roll-Ups, 72 ct. SA

If you’re looking for pre-packaged snacks that are easy to grab and pack, these are a sure-fire winner. They are exceptionally sweet (why most kids love them!) so in moderation but they’ll keep kids busy sucking and chewing (pack wipes for after!)

Fruit Crisps

Brothers-ALL-Natural Fruit Crisps, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Variety, 0.35 Ounce (Pack of 12)

Another great option when kids are craving something crispy but you’re trying your best to keep it healthy. So many delicious flavors to try – think apples, bananas, peach, and strawberry. Warning though – even when packaging marks them as 100% fruit – they are still super packed with natural sugars so in moderation.

Mini Cookies

CHIPS AHOY! Mini Original Chocolate Chip Cookies, 12 - 3 oz Big Bags

A few mini choc-chip cookies or Oreos can’t hurt as a sweet addition to their snack pack.

Teddy Grahams

Teddy Grahams Honey Graham Snacks, 4 Boxes of 12 Snack Packs (48 Total Snack Packs)

Sweet crackers in the shape of a teddy bear. Clearly, very, very different to animal crackers (when you’re under the age of about 6!) You just gotta judge what sort of cracker fan you have on your hands!

Fruit Loops

Kellogg's Froot Loops Cold Breakfast Cereal, Fruit Flavored, Breakfast Snacks with Vitamin C, Variety Pack (4 Boxes)

Another that fits within the dry cereal category but a little more sugary so we’re including them separately down here in sweet treats! You’ll still get the carbs and protein kids need though with the wholegrain base.

Mini Muffins

A great make at home treat if you can, as they can freeze until you need them ready for your trip! Otherwise, we won’t judge if you go the store-bought option. A sweet treat but packed with fiber.

Yogurt Covered Raisins

Mariani Vanilla Yogurt Raisins - Gluten Free, Healthy Snacks for Kids & Adults, 4oz (Pack of 4)

These can be a little messier and a little sweeter than raisins just on their own, but oh so delicious! A much better alternative than actual sweets or chocolate covered fruits.

Mentos Chewy Mint Candy Roll, Mint, Non Melting, Party, 14 Count (Pack of 15) - Packaging May Vary

Our special reward of choice! Mentos take a little longer to suck and chew on than other sweets, so we feel like we get the best bang for buck from this sweet treat. They are also a great sweet for airplanes when you need kids to suck for take-off and descent. Obviously, reserve these for your older kids as they can be a choking hazard for your under 3’s.

And don’t forget drinks!

Takeya Kids Insulated Water Bottle w/Straw Lid, 16 oz, Blush/Super Pink

The need to stay hydrated whilst on the road is crucial, but obviously needs to be balanced with the subsequent need to pee! Make sure every person in the car has their own water bottle, and save fruit juices and sodas for special treats only.

We aim for a 12-16oz insulated bottle for the kids and adults a 24oz insulated bottle .

How To Transport And Distribute Your Road Trip Snacks

Shared containers or one each.

I personally hate having too many boxes to clean each night when we get to our destination. However, with such individual tastes – plus fussy ones who will simply cry if the meat has been placed in the same container as their fruit – I have taken to providing kids with an individual box each or separate zip lock bags of dry snacks.

We try to give these out at set times, then collect them back in once they’ve had a few bites, so they don’t eat everything all at once, and we have a few things left for the next driving stint.

We also keep a bag of packaged snacks they can pick and mix from once they’ve had something from their “healthy box”. Even if they’re still healthy, anything with the shiny wrappers seems to be viewed as a special treat!

Others prefer to go bento box style lunch boxes which offer a variety of choices in one tray which can then be shared around. Our experience has been these have a higher probability of spillage occurring. Nonetheless, they make for simpler packing and cleaning and give everyone a wide variety of choices.

Little Hands Need Special Containers

When it is safe to start giving your toddler unsupervised snacks in the back, be conscious they will, of course, try and tip it out! We highly recommend if you’re giving dry cereals and crackers to use a cup with a spill-proof lid.

And of course – wet wipes! Always have wipes to hand for before and after handing out snacks to little ones, along with a good spritz of hand sanitizer.

The Emergency Snack

No matter how you store and hand things out, ALWAYS keep at least one emergency snack packed away! Especially if you get stuck in traffic or delayed in your final arrival for the day, this might be just the trick to get you over the line without a total backseat meltdown.

Keeping It Cool

If you have perishable items such as fresh-cut fruit and veg, you’ll want to transport them in a suitable car cooler to keep them fresh for as long as possible. You will need to keep up with remembering to freeze ice packs in your motel fridge each night to keep things fresh for the following day.

Drinks on the Road

Water is your best option! But just like I think moderation is best with snacks, it sometimes makes sense to get a special drink when you stop. We usually try to get our kids to fill up their reusable water bottles when we stop or we keep jugs of water in the car to refill so they are ready to go whenever we stop. If you do stop for drinks, consider getting a large drink and sharing or getting real fruit juice or other healthy choices.

You can click on the image below with all the snacks in one place and save the image to your phone or even print it so you have a list of the best car snacks right at your fingertips or to take with you into the grocery store.

Packing Your Car for Easy Snacking

How you pack your car is almost as important as what snacks you get. If the snacks aren’t accessible when you need them then no one will eat them. We try to keep a general snack bag accessible for everyone, AND each person in the car packs a car bag with a few snacks for the day. This ensures that no matter what, there is a snack available for everyone when you most need it.

If you are taking a cooler, try to keep it accessible from the inside car seats so you can get snacks and drinks easily while you’re underway. Also remember that a cooler with ice will need to be drained periodically.

Kid-Friendly Snacks for Your Family Road Trip

kid friendly road trip snacks

Road trips—whether you’re traveling cross-country or across town to grandma’s house—can be a lot of fun. There’s nothing as adorable as when your kid hears a song they love on the radio and starts singing along to it—except when it happens over and over again. Unfortunately, besides the adorable singing, the most common road trip phrase to come from the “backseat gang” isn’t as cutesy. It’s “Mom, I’m HUNGRY!” Those words can usually be heard about five seconds after pulling out of the driveway…and then about every 30 minutes.

It’s Snack Time

To fill those hungry tummies, there are actually much better snack options on the roads these days.

Fast food places are offering up healthier menus and some of those super-sized gas stations have much more than jerky and coffee. There are all sorts of gourmet nuts and fresh fruits to check out while you fill up the tank. But here’s the thing…those options can be super expensive! And not only that, but who wants to get in line at the drive-thru or drag the kiddos inside a gourmet mart every time they’re bellies rumble? Wasted money and wasted time!

The ultimate road-trip-tip: PLAN AHEAD!

To help you and your family enjoy your time together on your travels, we’ve created a checklist of kid-approved snacks to make the road traveled a lot less bumpy.

1. Annie’s Organic Fruit Snacks

3. Pretzels

4. Chewy bars

5. Applesauce squeeze packs

6. Juice boxes (TIP: freeze them the night before so they stay nice and chilled)

7. Healthy cheese puffs

8. Energy bars or granola bars

9. Sandwich crackers

We also love to make our own trail mix for road trips. In a sandwich bag, add a handful of pretzels, nuts, cereal and crunch dried fruit, and shake it up. You can also get the kids to help prepare for their road adventure by letting them create their own trail mix: put out bowls of ingredients and have them select the ingredients they like most.

And make sure your kids are part of the planning process. Let them help pack their lunch boxes, backpacks and coolers. If they’re part of the pre-trip fun, they’re much more likely to understand and embrace the actual road trip. Plus, you can just see the sense of pride in their little face when you say, “Hey everybody, Becky made trail mix for this leg of the trip!”

10 tips for surviving and enjoying a road trip with kids

By Tamara Tsaturyan

| Updated: May 8, 2024

Planning a road trip with kids? Whether you’re cruising down Route 66 or winding through the mountains, these tips will help you not only survive but also enjoy the time spent in the car with your kids.

A family packs camping gear into the trunk of their car, with a happy child holding a fishing rod, and parents arranging bags.

Any parent knows that traveling with kids comes with the potential for chaos. From lots of whining and sing-alongs to questionable tunes and backseat bickering, the thought of enduring a long road trip with kids can seem brutal. That being said, with the right preparation and a healthy dose of flexibility, road trips can also be incredible adventures that create lasting memories for the whole family. From snacks to entertainment and everything in between, this is your guide for a successful family road trip with kids.

Plan everything ahead

The planning phase is the most important part of traveling with kids. Gone are the days when you could be spontaneous with minimal prep, stopping wherever and whenever needed. Now, you need to plan what to bring, what to wear, where your stops will be and what time of the day you will start driving. Do your research and be overprepared.

kid friendly road trip snacks

Timing is everything

When it comes to road trips with kids, timing can make or break the experience. Consider your children’s schedules and try to plan your travel around their nap times or bedtime. A sleeping child means peaceful driving for you. Early morning starts can also be beneficial. Kids are usually in a better mood after a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast .

“Every year, we do a 24-hour drive straight with our three kids to one of our favorite vacation spots. Some of my biggest tips are to leave before dusk so that they sleep a good chunk of it and to have new activities on hand. They make travel-size games of classics like Trouble, which are perfect for siblings sitting side by side.”  — Shelby, Fit As A Mama Bear

Bring personal items

This may come as new information to some, but bringing personal items such as pillows, blankets and your child’s favorite stuffy leads to better sleep in the car. If you’re traveling with a toddler , make sure to bring a travel potty in case your child needs to go when you’re passing through the middle of nowhere.

Pack plenty of snacks

Hungry kids are not happy passengers. Pack a variety of snacks that are easy to eat in the car — think finger foods like pretzels, cheese sticks, sliced fruits and vegetables. Avoid anything too messy or sugary to prevent sticky situations. Don’t forget to have water bottles handy too.

If your kids are picky eaters and prefer homemade food, make sure to have more filling options as well. More often than not, kids refuse to eat the food at the fast food stops, so you’ll be glad to have packed sandwiches and other hot food in a travel thermos.

Kids get bored during road trips. Even if you give them everything, they will eventually become frustrated and start throwing tantrums. So it’s essential to stop often. Plan your stops and make them efficient. While stopping for gas, food and other necessities is important, plan a couple of stops at places where your kids can run around and burn off some energy.

“I have survived a lot of road trips with a 3-1 kid-to-parent ratio. My secrets? I plan plenty of kid-friendly stops that help them move, like a stop at a playground, a visit to a children’s museum or even a nature walk.” — Sage Scott, Everyday Wanderer

Prepare entertainment

For the times when your kids are awake, keep them busy and entertained with fun road trip games . Have some new or forgotten toys and books on rotation too. Coloring books, stickers and travel-size board games are all great options. During particularly long stretches of the trip, electronic devices can be a lifesaver. Make sure your child’s iPad is fully charged and loaded with kid-friendly content before you hit the road.

Don’t forget the essentials

There are a few things that are simply must-haves on a road trip with kids. You never know where you might be stuck and for how long, so always expect the unexpected and be prepared. Here are some of the essentials to have in the car:

  • Extra clothes
  • First aid kit
  • Charging devices
  • Extra water

Create a kid-friendly playlist

Music is a great way to keep spirits high during long stretches on the road. Involve your kids in creating a playlist with their favorite tunes. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing along to “Baby Shark” or “Let It Go” more times than you can count — it’s all part of the fun.

Embrace the journey, not just the destination

Road trips are more than just getting from point A to point B. They offer a chance to bond as a family, create lasting memories and experience new things. Enjoy the scenery by discussing with your kids the fun facts about the places you pass through. If you see something interesting along the way, take a detour and explore. You might stumble upon a hidden gem or create an unexpected adventure.

Be patient and flexible

Road trips with kids rarely go exactly according to the plan. Be ready to adjust your schedule and route if needed. Traffic jams, bad weather and meltdowns can happen. Stay calm and have a backup plan for unexpected situations.

One last thing

A road trip with kids can be a test of patience, but with the right approach, it can also be incredibly rewarding. By planning ahead, staying flexible and focusing on making the trip enjoyable, you’ll create lasting memories that your family will treasure. So, load up the car, hit the road and enjoy the adventure together. Safe travels!

Understanding Road Trip Snacks

Road trips can be long and tiring, and it’s important to have snacks on hand to keep you fueled and satisfied. But not all snacks are created equal when it comes to road trips. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting the best road trip snacks:

Portability is key

Choose snacks that are easy to pack and eat on the go. Avoid anything that requires utensils or is too messy to eat in the car. Think finger foods like trail mix, granola bars, and beef jerky.

Balance is important

While it’s tempting to load up on sugary snacks and junk food, it’s important to maintain a balanced diet, even on the road. Pack a mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to keep you feeling full and energized.

Consider dietary restrictions

If you or your travel companions have dietary restrictions or preferences, make sure to pack snacks that accommodate those needs. There are plenty of options available for gluten-free, vegan, and nut-free diets.

Don’t forget hydration

Staying hydrated is crucial on long road trips, so make sure to pack plenty of water and other hydrating beverages. Avoid sugary drinks that can cause a crash later on.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can select the best road trip snacks to keep you fueled and satisfied on your journey.

When it comes to road trip snacks, making your own can be a fun and cost-effective way to ensure you have healthy and delicious options on hand. Here are a few easy DIY snack ideas to try on your next adventure:

Homemade Trail Mix

Trail mix is a classic road trip snack that can be customized to your liking. Start with a base of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit, and add in any other ingredients you enjoy, such as chocolate chips, pretzels, or popcorn. Here’s a simple recipe to get you started:

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl and store in an airtight container. This trail mix is packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, making it a satisfying and nutritious snack.

Baked Veggie Chips

Instead of reaching for a bag of greasy potato chips, try making your own baked veggie chips. Try making these DIY snacks before your next road trip for a healthier and more satisfying snacking experience .

Storage and Packing Tips

Keeping snacks fresh.

When packing snacks for a road trip, it’s important to keep them fresh. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

  • Use airtight containers: This will help keep your snacks fresh and prevent them from getting stale.
  • Keep snacks dry: Moisture can cause snacks to spoil quickly, so make sure to keep them dry. You can use a desiccant packet or a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture.
  • Store in a cool place: Heat can cause snacks to go bad quickly, so store them in a cool place, like a cooler or a shaded area of the car.

Portion Control

It’s easy to overindulge on snacks during a road trip, but practicing portion control can help you avoid feeling sluggish and lethargic. Here are some tips to help you keep your portions in check:

  • Use portion control containers: These containers are designed to help you measure out the perfect portion size for your snacks.
  • Pre-portion snacks: Before you hit the road, take some time to pre-portion your snacks into individual bags or containers.
  • Choose snacks wisely: Opt for snacks that are low in calories and high in protein, like nuts or jerky. These snacks will help keep you feeling full and satisfied without weighing you down.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your road trip snacks stay fresh and delicious, and that you don’t overindulge and feel sluggish during your trip.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, choosing the best road trip snacks can make or break your journey. It is important to choose snacks that are easy to eat, mess-free, and provide the necessary nutrition to keep you energized throughout the trip.

Some of the best snacks for road trips include granola bars, trail mix, beef jerky, and fresh fruit. These snacks are not only delicious but also provide the necessary nutrients to keep you going.

It is also important to stay hydrated during the trip, so don’t forget to pack plenty of water and other hydrating drinks. Avoid sugary drinks and opt for water or unsweetened tea instead.
