15 Best Things to Do in Medan (Indonesia)

The city of Medan in North Sumatra sees a large number of tourists as it is the entry and exit point for stunning neighboring attractions like Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang. Unfortunately however, many people stay overnight in Medan and leave as quickly as possible, thinking that this is just another big city in Indonesia. They couldn’t be more wrong however, and Medan sees a lot of domestic tourists who realize its charms and who also recognize that it has some of the best food in Indonesia.

People flock here for the food scene, and whatever your tastes you won’t go hungry in the city. Most of Medan’s top attractions are focused around food and you can sign up for a food tour, or simply go it lone and explore the sights, smells, and tastes of the city by yourself. In addition to the restaurants, stalls, and food courts, Medan is known for its diversity, and this is reflected in the range of attractions that you can experience here including a strong Tamil influence, a large Chinese community, and the indigenous Batak people who also call Medan home.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Medan :

1. Tour Tjong A Fie Mansion

Tjong A Fie Mansion

Anyone who has been to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Penang in Malaysia may find Tjong A Fie Mansion familiar, and Tjong A Fie was actually a relative of Cheong Fatt Tze hence the similarities between the two buildings.

The mansion is one of the top attractions in Medan and is a great place to see how people would have lived in this city in the 1900s.

You can take a guided tour around the mansion which will take around an hour and hear all about the history here with one of the attentive guides.

As you walk around make sure to check out all the ornate decorations and the pretty garden for which the mansion is famous.

2. Have a bowl of soup at Soto Kesawan

Soto Kesawan

Soto Kesawan is one of the reasons why people flock to Medan for its food and is one of the most famous restaurants in the city.

It is actually not really a restaurant but more a small shop with a few tables, but it serves up one of Medan’s most well known dishes called Soto Medan.

In essence this is a soup which is thickened with coconut milk and has shredded chicken or prawns added to it as well as crunchy bean sprouts and potato cakes.

The eatery closes around 4 pm, so make sure you get here early if you want to score your own bowl of this delicious and soothing soup.

It is close to Tjong A Fie Mansion so it’s a good idea to visit both of these attractions at the same time.

3. Admire Mesjid Raya Al Mashun

Mesjid Raya Al Mashun

Mesjid Raya Al Mashun, or simply Mesjid Raya as it is often referred to, is Medan’s main mosque and is known for being one of its prettiest.

The mosque was built using imported building materials such as Italian marble and you can take a tour and check out all the exquisite details here.

Some things to look out for include the pretty stained glass touches as well as the emerald green tiles, and the mosque is topped with dark elegant domes.

Non-Muslims are welcome to tour the mosque outside of prayer hours, but make sure to dress respectfully.

4. Have lunch at Tip Top Restaurant

Tip Top Restaurant

Conveniently located across the street from Tjong A Fie Mansion, Tip Top Restaurant is something of an institution in Medan and first opened its doors in 1934. Little has changed since that time and this is an example of the pretty colonial style architecture that is found all over Medan.

The restaurant serves a range of Indonesian and international food, and also has an in-house ice cream parlor as well as a bakery that turns out delicious cakes.

The real reason to come here though is to enjoy the period setting and get a taste of how Medan would have looked years ago.

5. Dress up at Istana Maimun

Istana Maimun

Istana Maimun is the name of the royal palace in Medan which belonged to the Sultanate of Deli.

Nowadays parts of the palace are open to the public and have been turned into a museum.

These include the throne room and there are a few displays that explain the history of the royal family and some collections of ancient clothing and other objects of interest.

One of the big draws here is that for a small fee you can dress up in period garb and take pictures in the throne room, and you can also walk around the lush grounds that encircle the palace.

6. Have dinner at Merdeka Walk

Merdeka Walk

Medan is famous for its food but if you are not sure what you want to eat then head to Merdeka Walk.

This is basically a kind of promenade which is lined with different restaurants and stalls selling all different kinds of food in the center of the city.

This means it is perfect if you are traveling with a large group as everyone can choose something different to eat and it offers you a snapshot of Medan’s varied food scene.

Just some of the choices here include noodle dishes, soups, rice, curries, fresh juices, and toothsome desserts.

7. Visit the Museum of North Sumatra

Museum Of North Sumatra

The Museum of North Sumatra is the best museum in the city and a must-visit if you want to know more about the history and culture of the province.

At the museum you will find galleries that tell the story of the different periods of North Sumatran history and take you through the Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim eras as well as the Dutch colonial period.

There are also collections dedicated to ancient weaponry, textiles, farming equipments, and sculptures, and you will also find some amazing wooden coffins carved in the shapes of dragons.

All in all, this is a treasure trove of history and a great introduction to Medan.

8. Enjoy a feast at Garuda Restaurant

Garuda Restaurant

If you want to try some quintessential Medan style food then you need to go to Garuda Restaurant.

This is actually a chain so there are a few dotted all over the city and the main reason to come here is to enjoy the Nasi Padang.

Literally meaning ‘Padang Rice’, the staff will bring you a range of around 20 small dishes filled with different curries, fish, vegetables, and sauces as well as a plate of rice.

You pay for the food you eat, so you don’t need to sample every dish and some of the highlights include the spicy beef curry called rendang, the potato cakes, and the eggplant covered in chili sauce.

Whatever you choose however, this is one of the best food experiences that you can have in Medan.

9. Walk around Kampung Keling

Kampung Keling

Kampung Keling is the traditionally Tamil part of Medan and you could be forgiven for thinking that you were actually in India.

The area is covered in shops selling colorful saris and Indian jewelry and there are also a wealth of Indian restaurants here that serve traditional Indian dishes.

It is also the spot of the Sri Mariamman Temple which was built in 1884 and is a riot of color.

Make sure to check out the ornate carvings that make up the temple roof, as there is nothing else like this in Medan.

10. Visit Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni

Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni

Also known as Our Lady of Good Health Church, Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni opened in 2005 and is something of an optical illusion.

Dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health, this is a Catholic church but it is modeled on an Indian temple and you can enjoy the ornate furnishings here and the elegant and colorful effigies on show.

It is also a powerful symbol of Medan’s diversity.

11. Have dinner at Cahaya Baru

Cahaya Baru

Located in Kampung Keling, Cahaya Baru is one of the most famous restaurants in the city.

This simple eatery is dedicated to serving up delicious and cheap Indian food and this is the place to come if you want to try authentic curries and dhal.

If you want to get a taste of everything you can order the tali which comes on a metal tray that is separated into compartments and has a range of curries, rice, and vegetable dishes.

Unlike many restaurants in Medan you can also buy beer here and enjoy a cold one with your meal, or you can opt for the fresh juices or lassi.

12. Visit Medan Post Office

Medan Post Office

Medan Post Office sits in the center of the city and is one of the most recognizable buildings in the area.

The post office was built in 1911 during the Dutch colonial period and was designed by a Dutch architect who built it in the traditional colonial style.

The post office has a large done on the top and signature half circle windows and is one of the best examples of colonial architecture in Medan.

13. Visit Vihara Maha Maitreya

Vihara Maha Maitreya

Vihara Maha Maitreya is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Indonesia and a pretty spot to visit if you want to tour around all of Medan’s key religious attractions.

There is a large Buddhist community in Medan, and this is an important place of worship although visitors are also welcome to tour the building.

Make sure to look out for the pretty pools here and there is also a canteen here that sells delicious vegetarian food so try to time your visit to coincide with lunchtime.

14. Explore Rahmat Gallery

Rahmat Gallery

Rahmat Gallery is one of the quirkiest attractions in Medan and is a great choice if you want to do something a little unusual.

The gallery is notable as it is filled with preserved animals, so anyone with an interest in taxidermy definitely shouldn’t give it a miss.

The gallery is also a great way to check out a range of different species that are indigenous to Indonesia.

15. Enjoy the nightlife at Cafe Raya

Cafe Raya is an institution in Medan and is known as the best place to stop off for a few beers.

Not all cafes in Medan serve alcohol, so this makes Cafe Raya a favorite with the expatriate community and with anyone looking for a quiet corner away from the bustle of the city.

Located in the center of town on Jalan SM Raja, Cafe Raya also serves a range of international dishes and some simple Indonesian noodles and fried rice, and as many of the city’s hotels and guesthouses are located along the same road, this is a convenient place to come in the evening and relax before you turn in for the night.

11 Best Things to do in Medan, North Sumatra

Years ago, we had a joke that one of the best things to do in Medan was to leave it. But times have changed, and so has our opinion on North Sumatra’s biggest city.

Home to around 2.5 million people (3.4 million if you include the wider urban areas), there’s no denying that Medan has an air of somewhat grubby chaos. But look past the traffic jams and seemingly disorganised streets and you’ll find a metropolis that is very much full of vibrant life, intriguing sights, and yes – rich culture and history!

The best things to do in Medan reflect the diversity of Sumatra: impressive mosques, churches and colourful temples attract worshippers and tourists alike.

Discover grand palaces and mansions that boast historical knowledge as impressive as their architectural designs.

And of course, indulge in some of the incredible cuisine unique to this part of the world.

If you have a spare day to check out some Medan attractions – here are the top places to add to your list.

Explore Royal Life at the Maimun Palace (Istana Maimun)

A landscape photo of Maimun Palace in Sumatra. A large, multi-story building with domed rooves, painted white and gold.

10,000IDR per person Open daily from 8am-5pm

Before Sumatra split into the 9 provinces we know today, it was divided into various kingdoms. One of these kingdoms was the Sultanate of Deli, a 1,820 square km area in east Sumatra. This area was ruled over by the Sultan of Deli.

While the kingdoms are ancient history from hundreds of years ago, the sultanate remains as a nod to the history of Medan City – as does the impressive family palace – Istana Maimun.

Interestingly, the Sultan of Deli and his family still live in the palace, so only restricted parts of it are open to the public.

The gorgeous Maimun/Maimoon Palace was constructed in 1891 and is one of Medan’s best attractions for numerous reasons.

Firstly, it’s the last remaining Melayu palace. The rest were all destroyed during conflicts in the 1940s.

On top of that, it is completely impressive. Thirty opulent rooms cover 2,772 square metres and the design is inspired by Malay, Islamic and Indian architecture.

A visit to the palace is a glimpse into the history of Medan – and wider Sumatra. Explore the reception hall, throne room, living quarters and tower. Browse the historical artifacts and marvel at a kingdom that has faded into the history books.

Even better, get into some cosplay by hiring some of the royal costumes and wandering around the palace fanning yourself and pretending you’re wealthy!

Yes – visitors can pay 90,000 to be clad in royal costumes and pose for pictures throughout the palace. There are outfits for men, women and children. This is certainly one of the most memorable things to do in Medan.

Admire the Grand Mosque of Medan (Masjid Raya Al-Mashun)

Landscape photo of the Grand Mosque in Medan. A large building with multiple domes, painted white, gold and blue.

Donation to enter the area

You must wear appropriate clothing to enter: that means covered legs and shoulders for men and women, as well as a hair cover for women.

Just across the road from Maimun Palace, you’ll find another of Medan’s top attractions, the enormous Grand Mosque of Medan – locally known as Masjid Raya Al-Mashun.

This beautiful building took three years to build. Completed in 1909, it was originally on the grounds of the Maimun Palace. In fact, the then Sultan of Deli himself commissioned the building.

He wanted to ensure that the Grand Mosque wasn’t overshadowed by his own palace, so no expense was spared in the design and construction of this Medan icon. Another Medan icon, wealthy businessman Tjong A Fie, was a key financier in the project.

The Grand Mosque features marble imported from Germany, Italy, and China, and stained glass for the chandelier from France.

The building itself features elements of Spanish, Indian and Middle Eastern design.

Bear in mind that the Masjid Raya Al-Mashun isn’t just for decoration or tourists: it is an active mosque with regular worship. You may wander around outside whenever you like, but if you wish to go in for a look, you’ll need to dress appropriately and avoid prayer times.

Step Into the Past at Tjong A Fie Mansion

A yellow painted building with manicured gardens in front.

35,000IDR per person Open daily from 9am to 5pm

As the saying goes, it’s not what you know but WHO you know. And if you’re at all interested in the history of Medan, you need to know about Tjong A Fie. He was THE man in Medan back in the day.

Why? A visit to Tjong A Fie Mansion will tell you all you need to know about this wealthy businessman/philanthropist from 100 years ago.

This house may not be a palace, but it’s definitely semi-palatial. A present from Tjong A Fie to his 3 rd wife, the Dutch colonial style home has 35 rooms and combines Chinese and Victorian design styles.

There are hand-painted ceilings, an open-air courtyard, lavish bedrooms and even a ballroom.

But even more intriguing than the mansion is the story of the man who built it. At 17 years of age, Tjong A Fie left his very humble family home to find his fortune in Sumatra. And boy did he ever find it!

He and his brother started businesses and rapidly became successful, accumulating wealth via real estate, mining, banking, railroads, coconut, tobacco, tea, rubber, palm oil and sugar plantations. So he really had a finger in ALL of the pies!

But Tjong A Fie also used his wealth and connections for good. He set out to unite the multiple ethnic groups living in Medan, promoting peace and cooperation. He gave back to the Medan community without prejudice, funding everything from temples, mosques and churches to schools and hospitals.

The mansion now mostly functions as a museum (although some areas are still lived-in and remain off-limits). It’s beautifully set up and well worth a visit for history buffs.

If you’d like to get the full experience, we highly recommend hiring one of the guides working at Tjong A Fie – their depth of knowledge will really make this one of the most interesting things to do in Medan, Sumatra.

Explore Sumatran Culture at the Museum of North Sumatra (Museum Negeri Sumatera Utara)

An intricately carved wooden statue resembling a dragon

30,000 IDR per person Open daily 8:30 to16:00

Escape the stifling humidity of the city by entering the clean, crisp, air-conditioned interiors of Medan’s Museum of North Sumatra.

North Sumatra is home to a range of different cultures – and this is a great place to learn a little more about them before heading off to see them in “real life.”

You’ll find a wide variety of displays here – from fossils and dioramas reflecting early Sumatran life to artefacts and artwork from various cultural groups.

There are stone and wood carvings from Nias, textiles from the Batak tribes (like you’ll find in Lake Toba ), remnants of the Dutch colonial era and much more to discover.

Go Wild at Rahmat International Wildlife Museum & Gallery

Several stuffed tigers mounted on a fake display

150,000 IDR per person Open daily from 9 am-5 pm

The next thing to do in Medan isn’t really our cup of tea, but it is a popular Medan attraction that may appeal to you – so it has made the list!

Marketed as a natural history museum, this building houses around 5000 stuffed animals representing a massive 2,500 species (many of them endangered).

Owned by avid conservationist/sports-hunter Rahmat Shah (who also happens to be the head of the Indonesian Zoo Association), the Rahmat Wildlife Museum apparently exists to inspire people to love and appreciate the diversity of nature.

Here, you’ll wander through various rooms featuring a range of stuffed and mounted animals. There is some information on the animals and a little focus on conservation.

If you have time to kill in Medan and would like to get up close to a tiger or a lion, this is your spot.

However, if you are more interested in seeing your wildlife alive and enjoying the jungle, we recommend making the four-hour trip to one of the jungle villages bordering the Gunung Leuser National Park to admire them from a respectful distance! Find out more here:

Drop in to See Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni (Our Lady of Good Health Church)

An ornate brightly coloured church with peaked roofs resembling a temple.

North Sumatra has a sizeable Christian population, so there is no shortage of churches throughout the province. But none of them is as eye-catching as the Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni – also known as Our Lady of Good Health Church.

This isn’t just any old Catholic church – it’s a Marian shrine with a seven-floor tower designed in a uniquely Indonesian style. And it’s a key pilgrimage site for worshippers all over Asia.

In the spirit of diversity, the church’s founder wanted the building’s design to be welcoming to all races and religions. That’s why it’s decidedly un-church-like, with aspects of mosque and temple design features.

Even the scripture quotes on the walls are written in Indonesian, Tamil, English and Chinese to cater to the various ethnic groups in Medan.

While not the grandest building in Medan, the Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni is an interesting addition to your Medan things-to-do list.

Marvel at Maha Vihara Maitreya Cemara Asri

An orange Buddhist temple with multiple floors

You’ve probably heard of Borobudur – the mindblowing Buddhist temple located in Java – but have you heard of Maha Vihara Maitreya Cemara Asri?

This Medan attraction may not be quite as impressive, but it is said to be the largest modern Buddhist temple in Indonesia – and it’s certainly one of the largest in Medan.

Set on a sprawling 4.5 hectares the temple grounds feature a pond, a convention hall, a vegetarian restaurant and various sculptures.

This is an interesting thing to do in Medan as it’s located on the outskirts of the city in a residential complex known to be the culinary centre of Medan. Take your time to look around, then go try out one of the many restaurants in the area.

Sample the King of Fruits at Ucok Durian

A large pile of spiky durian fruits with staff standing next to them in yellow tshirts

Free entry Open 24 hours

Have you REALLY visited Sumatra if you haven’t sampled the King of Fruits – aka the durian? The pungent flesh of these exotic fruits is safely stored away in a very spiky shell, and there are many different varieties.

While durian can be an acquired taste for newbies, they are an absolute treat for most locals, who eagerly await durian season to chow down on the custardy flesh.

If you don’t have time to wait for durian season (which varies across Sumatra), then a visit to Ucok Durian to sample some is essential. They always have plenty of stock and are open 24 hours, so there’s no excuse to miss out!

When you arrive, the fantastic staff will escort you to a table and give you one of these enormous fruits to try. Some are sweeter, some more bitter, but the well-trained “tukang durian” can tell exactly what the taste will be just by looking at the outside.

Hit the Shops at one of Medan’s Fancy Malls

A brightly lit, nodern. mall with a variety of shops

The best things to do in Medan don’t have to be all about culture and history: if you’re into a spot of shopping, there are plenty of shiny, air-conditioned malls to wander around.

Help the kids burn some energy at the fun and games of the arcade at the Centre Point Mall. Wander around the 400+ shops or catch a movie at Sun Plaza, indulge in the Foodcourt at fancy DeliPark Mall… the choice is yours!

There’s also Plaza Medan Fair, Cambridge City Square, and the more locally-oriented Medan Mall.

With so many Medan malls to choose from, there’s bound to be one close to your hotel. Even if you just want to window shop, it’s a great way to escape the heat of the streets for a while and indulge in some familiar comfort food at a Pizza Hut, Burger King, McDonald’s or KFC.

Treat Yourself to a 5-Star Hotel Stay

A spacious hotel room with a large bed and floor to ceiling windows looking out over the city of Medan

Sumatra may attract its fair share of budget backpackers, but there are some fantastic options for those who like a bit of luxury from time to time!

After a few days sleeping on the floor of the jungle, we think one of the best things to do in Medan is check into one of the fancy 5-star hotels and treat yourself to a hot bath, a massage, and a buffet breakfast.

Our absolute favourite 5-star hotel in Medan is the swanky JW Marriott. The service is exceptional, the rooms are luxuriant, and the food is top-notch.

Plus, it’s only around a 10-minute drive from the JW Marriott Medan to some of the top attractions on our list, such as Tjong A Fie Mansion, Maimun Palace and the Grand Mosque.

It’s also just up the road from one of Medan’s best malls – DeliPark Mall.

Have a look here at the JW Marriott Medan.

Chinese-Indonesian, local Batak, and Malaysia influences permeate the dishes and the flavours of the majority of the dishes and snacks are a wonderful delight to the senses. Be sure to head to the al fresco dining strip on Merdeka Walk where hungry travellers can try everything from a fast-food burger to a traditional durian pancake.

Aside from the culinary tourism, Medan has a host of attractions and activities that any culture buff would be interested in. Museums, religious sites and stunning architecture are the foundation of Medan’s charms and attractions and cultural aficionados and photographers would enjoy exploring the city with very few other tourists. Below are our top ten attractions and activities to see and do while in Medan.

1. Feast on a culinary feast at Garuda Restaurant.

For those wanting to sample quintessential Medan food then the famous local, restaurant chain called Garuda Restaurant is a must visit. With a few of these restaurants scattered around Medan, locals and tourists flock here to devour the delicious Nasi Padang that the chain is so popular for. Translated directly to ‘Padang rice’ the restaurant is known for bringing over twenty dishes to each table and then charging you for what you choose to eat. Select from a variety of flavoursome curries, fish dishes, vegetables, sauces and of course an array of rice dishes. Be sure to try some of Garuda’s highlights, such as the beef gulai, the fried chicken, chili eggplant and the potato cakes.

2. Savour the nightlife of Café Raya

A stunning mismatch of colonial-style buildings standing side by side with olden-day Indonesian food stalls contribute to the vibrant nightlife scene that comes alive at Café Raya once the sun goes down. Due to the no-alcohol laws in most restaurants in Medan, many locals, travellers and expatriates flock to Café Raya for a cold beer and a tasty local or international dish after a long day. Located in the heart of town, Café Raya is the ideal spot to unwind before turning in for the night.

3. Pay a visit to the Mesjid Raya Al Mashun

The Mesjid Raya Al Mashun or the Great Mosque of Medan is a wonderous sight to behold and is one of the oldest mosques in the city. The mosque was constructed in 1906 and formed a part of the Maimun Palace Complex which was used for royalty here in the city. The architectural design and style of the mosque has Middle Eastern, Turkish, Moroccan, Spanish and Indian influences and what makes the building structure so fascinating is the octagonal shape. The mosque is a stunning fusion of materials from all over the world and makes for a very striking first impression. Those with an eye for architecture and design might find it interesting to know that the gorgeous stained-glass from the chandelier is from France, and the gorgeous marble is from China, Germany and Italy.

4. Marvel the sights at Istana Maimoon

Now serving as a museum and a recognized landmark in Medan, the Maimoon was once a royal palace with thirty rooms that belonged to the Sultanate of Deli. This architectural masterpiece is a famous tourist attraction in the city for its unique and breathtaking interior design and its rich historical status. The palace is a wonderous blend of various elements from Malay, Islamic, Indian, Spanish and Italian; and is the ideal outing for anyone who enjoys stepping back in time and learning more about the history of Medan. Entrance is a mere IDR 10,000 and after strolling around the palace and garden travelers might enjoy stopping for a bite to eat at the scattering of local eateries or buying a souvenir at the tourist stores.

5. Stroll around Tjong A Fie Mansion

Tjong A Fie was a very successful Chinese banker and businessman who constructed and owned a massive plantation business in Sumatra. This mansion serves as an embodiment of his mass wealth, family lineage and history. The mansion is gorgeous and spacious with light streaming in and is filled with antiques and collectables that have been carefully preserved for tourism purposes. Situated on Keswan Street, the mansion is an intricate fusion of Malay, Tionghoa and European influences. The mansion consists of two floors and is made up of forty rooms each floored with hand-painted tiles from Italy. The walls of the rooms all depict elaborate scenes of life in China and visitors will have no shortage of things to look at during their visit to this cultural heritage landmark. Travelers interested in history, design and architecture and the finer things in life would enjoy walking around the grounds of the Tjong A Fie Mansion.

6. Spend a quiet afternoon at the Museum of North Sumatra

All travelers who wish to learn more about the culture, arts and crafts, and history of the city and of the region in general, will have an excellent time at the Museum of North Sumatra. The museum contains galleries that depict the lifestyle of different periods of North Sumatran history that take museum-goers on a visual journey through the Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and even the Dutch colonial era. A treasure trove of ancient weaponry, artworks, textiles, farming equipment, carved wooden coffins, fossil replicas of early humans, and depictions of prehistoric life, this museum is a must-see.

7. Rahmat International Wildlife Museum and Gallery

One of the city’s quirkiest attractions, this natural history museum has a massive collection of preserved animals in various displays from the very smallest critter to the largest beast. The stuffed animals are grouped and categorized according to habitat and invites the viewer to better appreciate and recognize the diversity of wildlife that occurs throughout the world and to acknowledge their significance. This is a good way for those interested in Indonesia’s indigenous animals to learn a bit more about the unique wildlife, creatures and critters that walk these lands.

8. Visit Vihara Maha Maitreya

Being one of the biggest Buddhist temples in all of Indonesia, this temple is a great spot to come for those interested in learning more about Medan’s religious background, beliefs and traditions. Vihara Maha Maitreya also offers reprieve from the hustle and bustle and the lovely pools and grounds make for a relaxing afternoon spent strolling leisurely around the building. The walls of the temple are beautifully decorated with reliefs of dragons, a phoenix and other mythical creatures which makes for pretty photographs. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the unusual floating teapot fountain too. This spot is also ideal for vegetarians as there is a canteen on site that sells delicious vegetarian dishes at lunchtime.

9. Explore the sights at Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni

This unique and interesting church comes highly recommended as one of Medan’s best sights and attractions. The architecture and design of the building itself is striking and imposing and grabs the attention of pedestrians even from the main road. The building is made up of two bigger levels at the foundation, and a smaller tower that consists of seven Indonesian-style stories on top. The grounds are well-maintained, the detail of the building a work of art, and all in all a visit to this temple is a humbling and memorable experience. Opening hours are from 6am until 11pm.

10. Stroll through Kampung Keling

Walking through the colorful stalls selling ornate saris, Indian jewelry and a plethora of Indian eateries that make up Kumpung Keling, you’d believe that you might in fact be in India rather than the city of Medan. Ideal for those craving a bit of culture and flair, these streets are the traditionally Tamil areas of Medan and even the roofs of the buildings have beautiful, ornate carvings. Keep your camera out and your eyes peeled for the vibrant Sri Mariamman Temple that is located here too.

Around Medan:

5) check in to a room with panoramic views of lake toba — taman simalem resort.

Breakfast View at Taman Simalem Resort- Lake Toba Itinerary-21

At 1200m above sea level, Taman Simalem Resort makes a popular getaway for the local Medan-ese as it offers a cool escape from the warm bustling city. That aside, it’s also one of the best places to experience the beauty of Lake Toba, also known as the largest volcanic lake in the world.

Taman Simalem Amphitheatre - Lake Toba Itinerary

The resort itself offers many activities that will make leaving its compounds a difficult mission; take a yoga-class on the hills over-looking Lake Toba, sign up for a  jungle trek  or just sit back and pamper yourself with a  relaxing Indonesian massage or Ayurvedic treatment .

6)  Catch the most beautiful sunrise overlooking  Lake Toba — One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill Hiking Lake Toba - Medan Itinerary-3

In fact, I dare say it’s probably one of the best places to catch the sun rising above Lake Toba. Feast your eyes as the darkness recedes to reveal the gorgeous caldera. On clearer days, you might even spot the island Pulau Samosir — the world’s largest island within an island.

7) Pulau Samosir: Explore the largest island in the world within a volcano

Ferry to Pulau Semosir - Lake Toba Itinerary

At 640 square kilometres, this island is often compared to the size of Singapore (719 square kilometres). Most of the residents living on the island are of Batak descent and speak a slightly different dialect. The island also caters to travellers looking to experience Lake Toba up close.

Kayak rental from Tabo Cottages - Lake Toba Itinerary

Take your pick from one of the many resorts lined on the edge of the island offering panoramic, waterfront views.

8) Spot Rainbows at Indonesia’s tallest Waterfall — Sipiso-Piso

Air Terjun sipiso piso waterfall - Lake Toba Itinerary - things to do in and around Medan

This epic 120-metre waterfall happens to be the tallest one in Indonesia and you can spot rainbows easily on sunny mornings — you might even spot doubles! Located in Tongging, it’s only a 20 minute drive from Taman Simalem Resort to the lookout point on top. Take a 20 minute trek down to the base; we say it’s worth it!

9) Swing your cares away at Bukit Indah Simarunjung

Swing at Simarunjung rest house - Lake Toba Itinerary

A popular pitstop from Medan or Berastagi towards the ferry to Pulau Semosir is the Simarunjung Rest house . They serve pretty strong ginger tea and goreng pisang (banana fritters) but perhaps the main attraction is the installations that are perfect for photos.

Our favourite installation of all was the giant swing that hung between 2 tall trees, strategically built with a perfect view of Lake Toba.

10) Trek up smoking volcanoes of Gunung Sibayak

Hiking up gunung sibayak - Lake Toba Itinerary

Down by the crater, you can even dig up fresh & warm mud laced with loads of skin-loving minerals for an express facial.

11) Treat your well-worked muscles to a relaxing soak  at the Semangat Gunung Hot Springs

Hot spring at the base of Gunung Sibayak - Lake Toba Itinerary

The perfect treat after trekking Gunung Sibayak, you’ll find a handful of public hot springs at the base of the volcano. With entrance fees ranging from Rp.5000 – 7000, treat yourself to a relaxing dip while being surrounded by mountain views all around. Its water is also filled with healthy minerals that are great for the skin.

I grew up in Medan. And I’m glad you gave the food thumbs up, because if there’s one thing I absolutely love and would return to the city for, it’s the FOOD! Lake Toba is a national treasure, no doubt. Those with more time can also check out the orangutans in Bukit Lawang. I didn’t manage to see the rainbows in Sipiso-piso, but it was great fun getting drenched there with a bunch of friends back in my high school days… it’s just so nostalgic! 🙂

I wrote a list of other 8 places you can also check out while you’re in Medan, thought it might contribute to some additional ideas 🙂 https://scarletscribs.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/8-great-places-you-can-visit-in-north-sumatra-from-medan/

"A melting pot of diversity."

Medan tourism.

The fourth-largest city in Indonesia, Medan is one of the most diverse areas in the country. With sprawling lawns, old government buildings, the heavy traffic and glistening new malls, Medan also offers an interesting contrast between old and new. Each ethnic group contributes to Medan's wide variety of food, making it an excellent place for food tourism, and a must-visit for foodies and connoisseurs alike. Lake Toba, in Medan, is the world's largest volcanic lake and is another popular attraction in Medan.

Usually, Medan is overlooked by tourists as a mere transition point to Malaysia or other Indonesian cities, the island of Penang or the beautiful Lake Toba, but the city in itself has plenty to offer in terms of culture, food and sights. Medan is a cultural mix of many ethnicities and religions, so its landscape is dotted with Dutch buildings, mosques, Hindu and Buddhist temples, churches and many other places of worship. With people from almost all kinds of Asian ethnicities, including Chinese, Javanese, different Indonesian tribes, Southern Indians, and Northern Indians, Medan has a vibrant culture, making it a must-visit for tourists wishing to explore Indonesia.

Indonesia’s third-largest city, Medan is the gateway to North Sumatra. Often railed against by fast-transiting tourists as one of Southeast Asia’s least charming cities, Medan makes a better impression on visitors who stick around a bit longer. Chaotic as any Indonesian metropolis, it certainly has its fair share of pollution and traffic jams, but also boasts more urban comforts than anywhere else in Sumatra .

Medan has a diverse population hailing from all across the archipelago and beyond, including substantial Indian and Chinese minorities whose roots in the city predate the arrival of the Dutch, the latter having left a few graceful examples of colonial architecture – evidence of the wealth generated from the vast plantations that to this day stretch up the slopes of the Bukit Barisan to the west of the city. The city has some interesting early 20th-century architecture, a decent museum, plus a number of alluring temples in its Indian Quarter. Stick around.

There may not be that much by the way of things to see and do in Medan, but even taking in the cacophony of Indonesia’s third-largest city can be a compelling reason to stick around a bit.

#1 Puruse the Museum of North Sumatra

The large, informative Museum of North Sumatra, 500m east of Jalan Sisingamangaraja (often shortened to SM Raja) on the southern side of the Bukit Barisan cemetery near the stadium, tells the history of North Sumatra, and includes a couple of Arabic gravestones from 8 AD and some ancient stone Buddhist sculptures.

#2 Admire the Grand Mosque of Medan

The black-domed Mesjid Raya (Grand Mosque of Medan) is one of the most recognisable buildings in Sumatra. Designed by a Dutch architect in 1906, it has North African-style arched windows, blue-tiled walls and vivid stained-glass windows.

al-mashun-great-mosque-medan-indonesia-shutterstock_701192206

#3 Seek out some stunning architecture

Jalan Brig Jend A Yani, at the northern end of Jalan Pemuda, was the centre of colonial Medan, and a few early twentieth-century buildings still remain. The weathered Mansion of Tjong A Fie (no. 105), a beautiful green and yellow two-storey house built in 1900 for the head of the Chinese community in Medan, the fine 1920s Harrison-Crossfield Building, and the grand, dazzlingly white headquarters of PT Perkebunan IX, a government-run tobacco company.

#4 Wander around the Indian Quarter

In the west of the city is the Sri Mariamman Temple, Medan’s oldest and most venerated Hindu shrine. It was built in 1884 and is devoted to the goddess Kali. The temple marks the beginning of the Indian quarter, the Kampung Keling, which is the largest of its kind in Indonesia .

In recent decades, the shrinking Indian population has been offset by an increasing number of Chinese, whose presence is made known by the nearby Vihara Gunung Timur (Temple of the Eastern Mountain), the largest Taoist temple in Sumatra. Its multitude of dragons, wizards, warriors and lotus petals are tucked away about 800m south of Sri Mariamman.

The best accommodation in Medan is found to the southeast of Mesjid Raya. There is nothing here to blow your socks off – most hostels and hotels are compacted or super basic

Around Jl Sisingamangaraja

There is a clutch of half-decent, cheap hotels running alongside the western side of Jl Sisingamangaraja and in the shadow of the Grand Mosque of Medan. This is the most convenient place to stay for the city’s sights.

The best places to stay in Medan

Looking for specific hotels? Look no furhter. Our local travel specialists have selected the best options to stay in Medan.

  • Pondok Wisata Angel The most popular backpacker spot in town, with clean, bright rooms with fan or a/c. Staff are helpful, and there’s free wi-fi and tasty food in the downstairs Angel Café
  • Residence Clean and all-green hotel by the Grand Mosque with a decent range of compact rooms: top-floor rooms have a/c and TV, while standard rooms can be a tad musty (ask for one with a window) with a cramped, inside mandi. The café/restaurant downstairs is good value with free wi-fi, and there’s a pleasant rooftop garden.
  • Sultan Homestay Right in the thick of the budget hotels, this cheapie has super-basic rooms with shared bathrooms. Escape the heat in one of the otherwise identical a/c rooms upstairs. Breakfast is included, and there’s friendly staff and free wi-fi.

Medan has its own style of alfresco eating, where a bunch of stall owners gather in one place and put out chairs and tables. Servers then bring around menus listing all the food available from each of the stalls. At night, travellers tend to go bowling at Yuki Simpang Raya or drink in ex-pat hangouts like the Tavern Pub, which also hosts live music.

The best restaurants in Medan

  • Cahaya Baru The best of the Indian restaurants in Kampung Keling, set in clean, a/c surroundings. The menu is mostly North Indian (think veg or chicken thali), with a handful of South Indian favourites (like masala dosa) and local dishes. Authentic flavours, colourful decor and local patrons combine to make you feel as though you’re in Delhi.
  • Tip Top Restaurant Part-restaurant, part-Medan institution – this is a venerable old place that’s been serving European and Indonesian food since 1934. The large menu includes Western, Chinese and Indonesian dishes as well as an extensive selection of cakes and ice creams.

Motorised becaks are one of the best ways to get around Medan © Worldpics/Shutterstock

For most visitors, the best way to get around Medan is using motorised becaks (rickshaws), though regular angkots (minivans) and taxis are handy for longer journeys.

The mainstay of the city transport network; they are numbered, and many have names too. The main angkot station is at Sambu, west of the Olympia Plaza, though the Medan Mall stop is more useful for travellers.

Motorised becaks

Another convenient way of getting around the city centre. Agree on a price before you set off.

Cheap and common, a taxi can be a helpful way to get around, especially at night. Only use metered cabs.

Most travellers spend no more than a day or so in Medan, using it as a transit point to Bukit Lawang, Danau Toba or Malaysia. As all the sights can be visited within 24 hours, it’s not worth sticking around any more than two days.

Medan has some great local festivals © Denis Moskvinov/Shutterstock

Medan has a hot and humid climate that varies little throughout the year, except during the annual monsoon season. The city's wettest months are August to December when daily rainfall can arrive one hour and leave the next. Expect overcast skies and regular downpours.

Some of the hotels will offer discounts during this time but as Medan is such a busy, city rooms can still be needed by those visiting on business. Good sunny weather between March to May make it the best time to visit ahead of major holidays or events.

Find out more about the best time to visit Indonesia .

The easiest ways to arrive in Medan are by plane or bus. The city has two major bus stations, both serving destinations in different parts of the county.

Medan’s Kuala Namu International Airport, the second largest in the country, is about 30km east of the city. The airport is linked with the city by rail and bus. The trip is quicker but pricier by rail with becaks (cycle rickshaws) connecting Medan’s train station to the Mesjid Raya area.

Buses connect the airport to several spots in the city, departing roughly every 15min. Recommended taxis for the trip between the airport and city centre include Blue Bird and Express.

Medan has two main bus stations. The sprawling Amplas station, 5km southeast of the city centre, serves buses for all points south, including Bukittinggi and Danau Toba. The Pinang Baris bus station, 10k west of the city centre, serves buses for destinations to the north or west of the city, including Bukit Lawang, Berastagi and Aceh.

Splash and Burn: A Sumatran Conservation Mural Tour

T he earth belongs to not only some humans, but  all  humans and other species that co-exist together. So it’s important to ensure everyone is on board in a conservation initiative. It is also very important to remember that contributions towards conservation can be done in many different ways. No matter how small, every single thing counts. It is about how we come together to create a better future for the planet we live on.

There is a beautiful and creative initiative from a group of mural artists worldwide who have come together to amplify the voices of Sumatran conservation through their work, which is displayed in many different places in Sumatra. While the artists hail from different countries, they are bound by their passion.

Taking a journey around Sumatra to view these works is becoming an iconic activity to not only learn about conservation but also to get inspired to move forward sustainably on your own!

Here are some beautiful murals from the  Splash and Burn  initiative, which highlights Sumatra while sharing important messages. Visit them as part of your slow travel experience around the island.

Racing Extinction by Ernest Zachrevic

From a Lithuanian artist who is now based in Malaysia, this mural highlights an orangutan baby with Sumatran children on Becak (Sumatran Tuktuk). This work is simply stunning and captures special things about the Sumatran people, culture, and biodiversity all at once.

Located in the old town of Sumatra—an economic center during the Dutch colonial period—this work is a must-visit if you’re roaming and wandering around the time machine that is Kesawan.

Ernest is the creator and leader of the Splash and Burn project and invited many other mural artists to join his endeavor.

Orangutan Tapanuli by Vhils

Bundaran sib.

Vhils is the latest artist to join the project and his work is remarkable. Located in Bundaran SIB in the center of Medan, he focuses on the importance of conserving the species of Tapanuli orangutan.

With just 800 remaining in the wild, the Tapanuli orangutan is the most critically endangered species. This piece was made to expose the urgency of the orangutan Tapanuli conservation program, as their habitat is threatened by many projects such as hydro dam, oil palm plantation, and mining. Thus, this piece is very special as it advocates such a strong message behind the beauty.

If you’re doing a city tour of Medan, make sure you take the opportunity to see this work. This is my favorite mural in the town, perhaps because I was involved in its production. It was an honor to see this amazing work made from scratch! I saw with my own eyes how this piece was done within less than 24 hours. Simply talented and amazing artists!

Kampung Multatuli Mural Spot

This spot is quite special as it’s located in the slum area of Medan next to the Deli river, a historical river during the Dutch colonial period.

The village has a number of beautiful murals scattered on its walls—but one, in particular, stands out. Gabriel Pitcher created a mesmerizing picture of an old Sumatran woman, which portrays Sumatran human development and the way we’ve changed and impacted our land.

In any Indigenous community, the elders are key to unlocking stories of life in the past. The elders are part of us and help us understand our purpose as Indigenous Sumatran people. They connect us with the past through beautiful stories, mythology, songs, and other things.

There is also a piece in this  kampung  (village) made by Axel Void. It portrays children playing inside palm oil trees—and it’s important because it shows the reality of the millions of children who grow up in palm oil plantations. It’s a remote existence, with limited access to facilities and even electricity.

I was one of those children. My childhood is filled with memories of roaming inside the plantation rather than the forest. This work has a message that resonates and helps us all understand the complexity of the palm oil industry in Indonesia.

Hornbill by Bibi Chun

  kesawan.

This piece focuses on the hornbill, a stunning yet endangered species. Located near the Medan rail station, this piece can seem hidden—but it’s well worth the effort to find. It’s a strong reminder that bird species are just as important as the larger species. The hornbill is one of the most endangered species as it is also poached for its horn, and this piece is very important to remind us all about this fact.

Using art to share conservation messages

All of these works are very special, sharing strong messages about Sumatran forest conservation through beautiful, inclusive street art that anyone can access. They exemplify how important it is to value conservation and contribute in our own way.

Conservation needs each and every one of us to understand our role as  part  of the ecosystem, not outside of it. We live together on this earth and we must change our ways of life as our current ways bring many destructions to the planet. We have to change not only for the sustainability of other species but also for our own species.
