Dans ce pays, les déserts et les forêts tropicales alternent avec les villes coloniales qui dévoilent leur patrimoine, sans égal, et s’animent lors des fêtes traditionnelles. Dans ce guide, vous trouverez toutes les informations dont vous avez besoin pour préparer votre séjour par vous-même.

• Lorsque vous préparez votre itinéraire, ayez conscience des distances et des temps de trajet.
• Apprenez quelques notions d’espagnol pour dialoguer avec les Mexicains.
• Louez une voiture pour plus de liberté.
• Évitez les zones très touristiques de la côte caraïbe.
• Goûtez la cuisine des vendeurs de rue et des petits restaurants « non officiels ».
• Visitez les sites archéologiques très tôt le matin.
• Favorisez les états de Oaxaca, du Chiapas et Guanajuato pour plus d’authenticité.
• Ne négligez pas le Nord si vous avez le temps.
• Préférez les cénotes moins célèbres.
• Ne vous inquiétez pas trop pour votre sécurité en dehors des zones déconseillées.

3 semaines au Mexique : l’itinéraire détaillé

Nous sommes tombés amoureux du Mexique lors de notre voyage de 3 semaines en Novembre 2021. Un pays qui offre tout ce que vous pouvez imaginer d’un grand voyage : soleil, paysages paradisiaques, eau turquoise, culture, faune et flore. Après avoir résumé notre voyage juste ici , je vous laisse avec notre itinéraire détaillé.

Jour 1 – Arrivée & Playa del Carmen

Après 11h de vol, nous sommes arrivés à Cancun en fin d’après-midi. Nous avons récupéré la voiture chez le partenaire de Touracancun, et avons directement filé vers Playa del Carmen, où nous avons pu fêter Halloween & voir les décorations de Dia De Los Muertos sur la 5 ème avenue, la rue la plus animée du centre-ville.

👉🏼   Qu’est-ce que Dia de Los Muertos ? En français cela signifie « le jour des morts ». C’est une célébration des défunts qui s’étend du 31 octobre au 2 novembre. Les Mexicains vont alors préparer des autels, décorés et avec les photos des défunts. Le 31 et le 1 er , ce sont les enfants qui sont célébrés. Le 1 er et le 2, ce sont les adultes. Le 2 novembre est officiellement la journée de la commémoration des fidèles défunts.

C’est une cérémonie très locale, que vous ne pourrez pas célébrer dans les lieux les plus touristiques (excepté Mexico, avec le festival, et Valladolid qui reste authentique). À Playa del Carmen donc, il y avait beaucoup de décorations, d’autels, mais pas de réelle cérémonie. On s’y attendait, mais cela est resté très joli à voir.

Jour 2 – Playa del Carmen & Puerto Morelos

Le deuxième jour, nous nous sommes rendus directement sur la plage principale. Ensuite, nous avons visité la 5 ème avenue, manger en ville, et sommes partis direction Puerto Morelos, à 30mn de route.

Puerto Morelos, c’est un petit village entre Cancun et Playa del Carmen. La plage et son récif coralien sont très jolis. On pensait pouvoir faire du snorkeling mais l’accès seul est restreint… Il faudra prendre un bateau pour accéder à la barrière de corail.

Jour 3 – Akumal, Cenote Dos Ojos & Tulum

Pour notre 3 ème jour, direction Akumal. On nous avait conseillé d’y aller le matin, donc on y était pour 10h30. Mais on ne savait pas très bien si on pouvait y aller seul ou si on devait prendre un guide.

Pour tout vous dire, on ne sait toujours pas si un guide est obligatoire. Ils disent que oui, pour protéger les tortues (des touristes s’amusaient à les prendre dans leur bras, les toucher…) mais on ne sait pas si on est rappelés à l’ordre en allant dans l’eau tout seul.

👉🏼   Alors comment nager avec les tortues à Akumal ? À notre arrivée, dès le passage du panneau « Akumal », beaucoup de guides nous sont tombés dessus. Un conseil : dîtes non, et attendez au guichet ou sur la plage directement. Les prix seront bien moins élevés. Ensuite votre guide vous mettra à l’eau et vous pourrez voir les tortues et les raies.

Ensuite on a profité de la plage, vraiment magnifique, puis on s’est dirigés vers le Cenote Dos Ojos. Le premier du voyage, et de notre vie !

👉🏼 Les cenotes sont des puits naturels, conséquence de l’impact d’une météorite. Ces grottes remplies d’eau douce sont sacrées pour les Mayas. Et sans vous mentir, c’est l’une des plus jolies choses que j’ai pu voir de ma vie jusqu’à maintenant ! Toutes les photos n’expriment en rien ce que ça fait de voir ça de ses propres yeux, la nature fait des merveilles !

Le Cenote Dos Ojos est néanmoins celui qu’on a le moins aimé du voyage. Il est superbe, mais l’entrée est beaucoup trop chère comparé à tout ceux qu’on a pu voir ensuite. (350 pesos (15€)/pers…)

Jour 4 – Les ruines de Coba & la réserve naturelle de Punta Laguna

Le lendemain, direction les ruines de Coba. Nous avons loué un vélo après l’entrée (impossible de les rater, c’est sur l’allée principale). On a choisi de ne pas prendre de guide, notre visite a duré 1h30.

Ensuite, nous avions rendez-vous avec Jesus, notre guide français, pour une visite de la réserve naturelle de Punta Laguna. Au programme : tyrolienne, kayak, observation des singes, cérémonie Maya et baignade dans un cenote atypique. Si vous le faites sans guide, vous avez 100% chance de vous perdre, et de ne pas trouver les singes.

👉🏼 Nous avons réservé sur WhatsApp à partir du numéro renseigné sur Google, pour le prix de 700 pesos/pers. Une superbe balade de 3h que je vous recommande fortement. L’argent revient aussi à protéger cette réserve et les locaux qui y habitent.

Jour 5 – Route des cenotes : Gran Cenote & Cenote Calavera

Pour cette journée cenotes, on a commencé par Gran Cenote, conseil : arrivez à l’ouverture pour ne pas connaître l’afflux de touristes de 11h. On a vu des tortues et on a adoré nager dans celui-ci. Prix de l’entrée : 300 pesos.

Ensuite, direction Calavera, un cenote insolite (aménagé aussi !) où l’on peut sauter. On n’y reste pas forcément des heures mais c’est amusant. Prix de l’entrée : 250 pesos.

Jour 6 – Réserve naturelle de Sian Ka’an

Réveil très tôt, mais cette journée a été une des plus jolies du voyage. Sian Ka’an est reconnue réserve de biosphère par l’Unesco. Mangroves, plage paradisiaque, eau translucide, lamantins, dauphins, crocodiles, oiseaux et tortues sont au rendez-vous. On a réussi à cocher un de chaque !

Au programme : Départ de Tulum jusqu’à l’entrée de la réserve. On prend le bateau, et on cherche les crocodiles et les lamantins. Ensuite, le bateau s’arrête devant l’île aux oiseaux. Un air de Jurassik Park : un petit bout de terre avec des dizaines d’oiseaux qui le survolent.

Le guide nous emmène ensuite chercher les dauphins, et une fois aperçus, direction la barrière de corail pour y faire du snorkeling. L’eau est splendide, les coraux et les poissons aussi. Légèrement plus loin, se trouve une piscine naturelle d’un bleu incroyable, où l’on peut nager librement.

On voit une tortue sur le chemin pour nous emmener à Punta Allen, qui est un gros coup de cœur. Un petit village dans la biosphère, où on peut déguster la langouste locale dans le restaurant au bord d’une plage qui n’a rien à envier à une autre.

On prend ensuite le café dans un petit boui-boui un peu plus loin, pendant que le guide nous explique l’histoire du village.

Ensuite, nous avons repris le bateau pour retourner vers la côte et revenir à Tulum vers 16h30.

👉🏼  Nous sommes passés par Secretoo pour faire cette excursion. On a opté pour « Sian Ka’an Absolute » que vous trouverez juste ici , qui fait éviter une heure de route sinueuse et désagréable, et nous fait arriver dans la réserve avant tout le monde.

Je ne peux que vous conseiller cette excursion. Elle vaut largement son prix, en sachant qu’une partie est réservée aussi à la réserve. C’est un des plus jolis souvenirs qu’on gardera de notre voyage.

Jour 7 – Kaan Luum Lagoon & direction Bacalar

Le temps n’était pas avec nous donc pas de Kaan Luum Lagoon. Je vous partage le nom quand même et vous laisse juger par vous-même suite aux photos d’internet ! On est allés directement à Bacalar.  Village où se trouve le lagon aux 7 couleurs, et le célèbre canal des pirates. Le centre-ville est aussi adorable, surtout la nuit quand il s’anime et prend des airs de marché de nuit.

Si vous avez plus de temps, je vous conseille fortement Mahahual aussi, un paradis moins touristique.

Jour 8 – Cenote Cocalitos & Canal des pirates

On a commencé par le Cenote Cocalitos pour aller observer les stromatolites. Et surtout profiter des hamacs, des balançoires, du banc de sable et de cette eau d’un bleu magnifique ! C’est vraiment LE spot de Bacalar pour nous. Prix de l’entrée : 50 pesos.

Ensuite, on a loué un canoë pour aller jusqu’au Canal des Pirates (environ 20-25mn de pagaies). Le temps n’était pas avec nous, mais l’eau restait d’un bleu/vert magnifique !

Jour 9 – Los Rapidos

On est arrivés à l’ouverture de Los Rapidos, ce célèbre « lagoon club » qui donne accès aux rapides de Bacalar. On peut manger, boire un coup, louer des kayaks ou tout simplement profiter du lieu, vous pouvez prendre un gilet et vous laisser flotter avec le courant. Les rapides sont vraiment magnifiques et agréables !

On est ensuite allés au bar “Catch” qui dispose d’un joli ponton sur le lagon.

Jour 10 – Cenote Cocalitos & direction Valladolid  

Avant de prendre la route vers Valladolid, on a décidé de retourner au Cenote Cocalitos. Et ensuite direction notre nuit étape ! Pour profiter pleinement de Bacalar, ne pas faire trop de route, ni passer la frontière vers le Yucatan de nuit, on a pris une nuit étape dans un petit motel à Felipe Carillo Puerto.

Jour 11 – Valladolid, Cenote Oxman & Dzinup

On a commencé cette journée par visiter Valladolid, qu’on a beaucoup appréciée. Puis on s’est dirigés vers le Cenote Oxman. Je l’avais tellement vu sur les guides, les réseaux et internet. J’avais vraiment hâte de le voir de mes propres yeux. Aucune déception, bien au contraire, énorme coup de cœur. Prix de l’entrée : 150 pesos.

Pour continuer la découverte des cenotes, on est allés voir le cenote Samula & X-kenken, aussi appelés « cenotes Dzinup ». Autre style et vraiment superbes.

⚠️  Attention ici : des « guides » sont à l’entrée, vont vous demander si vous voulez juste regarder, ou nager… Répondez que vous voulez seulement regarder, et si l’un d’eux vous suit arrêtez-le : sinon il demandera de payer le « tour » à la fin.

Jour 12 – Chichen Itza, Cenote Ik-kil & Valladolid

Réveil très tôt pour éviter la foule et arriver à l’ouverture du Chichen Itza. Très bonne décision, nous étions pratiquement seuls. Prix de l’entrée : 533 pesos (sans guide).

Le Chichen Itza fait partie des 7 merveilles du monde moderne. Les photos parlent d’elles-mêmes, il est réellement impressionnant.

Ensuite nous avons rejoint le cenote Ik-Kil, qui se trouve à côté du Chichen Itza. On l’a trouvé très beau, mais plus fabriqué et plus peuplé que les autres. Privilégiez l’ouverture ou l’heure du déjeuner pour le voir.

Jour 13 – Direction Holbox

Le lendemain, nos 15 premiers jours de découverte intense touchent à leur fin. C’est un peu le cœur lourd qu’on se dirige vers l’aéroport pour rendre la voiture et se rendre sur les îles où passer notre dernière semaine.

Première île : Isla Holbox. On a pris le bus de Cancun pour rejoindre Chiquila, le port où prendre le ferry pour Holbox. Prix du trajet : 220 pesos aller, 220 pesos retour.

On s’installe à l’hôtel, et on longe la plage pour trouver un joli spot où regarder le coucher de soleil, célèbre à Holbox. Gros coup de cœur pour le bar de l’hôtel Zomay : Une petite paillote sur la plage avec une musique chill, et ces gens qui ont tous la même intention : profiter du sunset et du moment. Une ambiance superbe que je garderai en tête !

Jour 14 – Holbox : centre-ville

Premier réveil à Holbox, petit-déjeuner à l’hôtel et ensuite direction le centre-ville pour manger un coup et admirer les petites ruelles colorées. Pas une journée très rythmée, l’après-midi, le temps n’était vraiment pas avec nous ! On a chillé dans les petits restos, bars et à l’hôtel.

Jour 15 – Punta Mosquito & Punta Cocos

Pour les deux derniers jours sur l’île, on a décidé de louer un vélo. Et on commence notre petite aventure par Punta Mosquito, ce célèbre banc de sable de l’île d’Holbox ! Un énorme coup de cœur durant ce voyage. On y accède par la mer. Comme tous les autres points touristiques, je vous conseille d’y aller tôt le matin, pour éviter la foule. 

Comme pas mal de lieux victimes de son succès, le banc de sable possède maintenant une limite, l’autre côté est maintenant préservé. Sachez que les drones sont également interdits. Beaucoup l’utilisent, mais ce n’est pas autorisé pour préserver la faune et la flore… ils faisaient fuir les flamants roses par exemple.

Ensuite, on s’est dirigés vers Punta Cocos, tout à l’ouest cette fois. On a surmonté les flaques en rigolant, et l’endroit est vraiment joli, même avec le mauvais temps ! (Alors imaginez avec du soleil…)

Jour 16 – Punta Mosquito & les plages de l’Est

Comme on a eu un coup de cœur pour Punta Mosquito, on a décidé de rester sur ce côté de l’île pour notre dernier jour à Holbox, on y est retournés et on a aussi fait les plages de l’ouest.

Le soir, on est retournés au Bar Zomay, pour observer notre dernier coucher de soleil sur l’île.

Alors finalement, c’était super triste de quitter cette île. Avant notre arrivée, il y a eu beaucoup d’avis négatifs sur les pages Facebook, sur Instagram… Même aux hôtels, des personnes demandaient le remboursement sous prétexte que l’île « était catastrophique ». Donc on appréhendait.

👉🏼 Je vous explique : entre novembre et décembre, il y a les « vents norte ». Ces vents ramènent des algues (maritimes et non des sargasses !) sur les plages. Donc sur certaines parties, il y a des algues, et l’eau n’est pas bleue comme sur les photos. C’est aussi la fin de la saison des pluies et c’est une île : très peu d’évacuation. Il y a donc des flaques parfois… Quelques inconvénients qui font finalement des souvenirs rigolos. Ces phénomènes sont normaux, et préservent le reste de l’année l’île et les locaux des ouragans. On a adoré l’île, l’ambiance y est vraiment spéciale, il y fait juste bon vivre, et c’est vraiment dommage de passer à côté/ou de ne pas l’apprécier à sa juste valeur car « ça ne ressemblait pas aux photos Instagram »…

Donc on part d’Holbox avec des souvenirs merveilleux, et on se dit que ce n’est sûrement pas un adieu !

Jour 17 – Direction Isla Mujeres

Direction Chiquilà pour prendre notre collectivo qui nous emmène directement à Cancun Downtown. On a ensuite pris un uber pour aller jusqu’au port, et ensuite prendre le ferry jusqu’à Isla Mujeres. Ça nous a pris pas mal de temps donc en arrivant on a surtout profité de l’hôtel. On a décidé de loger au sud de l’île, car le nord est connu pour le centre-ville mais aussi pour la fête et on voulait être au calme. On a choisi de ne pas louer de voiturette et se déplacer en taxi. La météo était bancale et on a eu peur de pas pouvoir pleinement en profiter (on a eu raison finalement !) mais ça doit être vraiment agréable sous le soleil.

Jour 18 – Isla Mujeres : centre-ville & Playa Norte

Direction le centre-ville d’Isla Mujeres, au nord de l’île. Très joli, beaucoup plus touristique et américanisé qu’Holbox, mais on le savait en y venant.

Ensuite, nous allons à Playa Norte, qui est classée comme une des plus belles plages du monde. L’eau même avec un temps nuageux est d’une couleur incroyable. Cependant, on voit en face les constructions de Cancun donc ça fait perdre un peu son charme. Mais on ne peut qu’affirmer qu’elle est vraiment splendide !

Jour 19 – La plage Garrafon & retour sur Cancùn

Pour le jour 19, le temps n’était malheureusement vraiment pas avec nous.

Nous devions admirer le lever de soleil à Punta Sur et aller à la plage Garrafon, avant de repartir sur Cancun. Je vous laisse regarder les photos sur internet vu que nous sommes restés à l’hôtel.

Pour quand même essayer de profiter, on est retournés à Playa Norte et on a mangé dans le centre-ville. Nous avons pris le ferry vers 15h30 pour retourner sur Cancun et aller à notre hôtel, qui était vraiment magnifique.

Jour 20 – Chill à l’hôtel & direction l’aéroport

Tellement heureux d’avoir réservé à l’hôtel Alamos Inn notre dernière nuit au Mexique, un petit havre de paix reposant avant de repartir en France. Éloigné de l’agitation de Cancun, il offre piscine, jacuzzi, baignoire spa, restaurant pour dîner et petit-déjeuner, jeux de société, et service de taxi. Tout était parfait. On en a profité et ensuite direction l’aéroport pour notre retour à la maison.

Et voilà pour notre itinéraire détaillé de ces 3 semaines merveilleuses. Comme je vous le disais dans mon guide pratique du Mexique , ce voyage s’est hissé numéro 1 de mon classement sans hésitation. Nous garderons des souvenirs extraordinaires, et espérons bien y revenir un jour ! ✨

Je vous conseille vraiment Holbox, vous pouvez facilement terminer par 2 nuits (par exemple, en enlevant Puerto Morelos du planning, une nuit à Bacalar, et la nuit étape). Surtout en décembre, c’est la meilleure période pour visiter l’île. Bon voyage à vous !

Je peux comprendre le ressenti ! Il y a beaucoup plus de voiturettes et de chantiers de construction par exemple. Honnêtement, je pense que l’île “tient le coup” niveau nid à touristes, pour l’instant. On y trouve encore cette superbe ambiance et les plages magnifiques. Dans quelques années, le ressenti sera sûrement différent malheureusement…

Quand partir au Mexique ?

La meilleure période pour partir au Mexique   va de novembre et avril, durant la saison sèche. Entre juin et octobre, les pluies sont en effet fréquentes, mais restent courtes et n’empêchent pas de voyager dans la plupart des régions. Le mois de mai est sec mais trop chaud, on évite donc de le choisir pour visiter le pays. On note de grandes différences de climat selon qu’on se situe en altitude ou non. L’hiver est froid en montagne et le soleil s’y couche tôt, alors que le Sud du pays connaît la chaleur toute l’année. On choisit donc globalement les mois secs et pas trop chauds pour visiter le pays des anciens Mayas.

Pour les Français, les Belges, les Suisses et les Canadiens, pas besoin de visa. Seul le passeport valable jusqu'à la fin du séjour est nécessaire. Bien conserver son document FMM pour la sortie . Vous êtes autorisés à séjourner 180 jours sur le territoire. Nos compatriotes des DOM-TOM seulement 30 jours.

Aucun vaccin n'est obligatoire. Ceux contre la Typhoïde, et l'Hépatite A sont très vivement conseillés. Celui contre la Rage également mais une moindre mesure.

To help you plan your trip, I have prepared the best 3-week itinerary in Mexico. It will allow you to discover the great diversity of the country while exploring several of its very interesting states.

Your trip will start in Mexico City , then you will go to Puebla , the birthplace of the Mexican Revolution, before heading to Oaxaca , known for its cultural richness!

You will then explore the fabulous Chiapas to discover its most beautiful natural sites, traditional villages, and the ancient city of Palenque , hidden in the jungle.

For the second part of the trip, you will tour the Yucatan peninsula , starting with Campeche , followed by Merida , the archaeological site of Uxmal , and a sight of the pink flamingos of Celestun .

You will visit the famous Mayan city of Chichen Itza and the colonial city of Valladolid , before resting for a few days on the paradise island of Holbox .

You will then arrive in the Riviera Maya , where the white sandy beaches of Tulum , the Mayan cenotes, and the Sian Ka’an reserve await you!

You will spend the last days of the trip in Playa del Carmen , which is ideally located to allow trips to the island of Cozumel and the underground river of Rio Secreto .

2) Cholula and Puebla (1 day)

In the morning, leave Mexico City for Puebla , a state not to be missed on a 21-day tour of Mexico .

Go first to Cholula , known above all for its great pyramid: it is the pyramid with the largest base in the world at 400 metres per side!

You can walk through its tunnels to discover the different stages of its construction which lasted between 500 and 1000 years !

Then, spend the rest of the day visiting Puebla , only 25 minutes from Cholula .

It is a colonial city known for its traditional pottery , its cultural richness, and for its historical importance as the cradle of the Mexican Revolution .

You will be able to discover on foot the historic center of the city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site :

• The Zocalo , which is the main square of Puebla with its cathedral (the 2nd largest in Mexico!), its municipal palace, several restaurants, and cafés with terraces.
• The Palafoxiana Library , which was the first public library in America (17th century) and contains 43,000 volumes!
• The Chapel of the Rosary in the Temple of Santo Domingo (17th century), a great example of Mexican Baroque.
• The International Baroque Museum , the Amparo Museum with its beautiful terrace, and the Museum of the Revolution.
• The handicraft market of El Parian , the best place to buy traditional handicrafts such as the famous “talaveras”.
• The Calle de los Sapos , a pedestrian street with colourful facades, restaurants, cafes, shops, and bars – one of the best places in Puebla to take pictures!
• The neighbourhood of Analco , one of the oldest in Puebla, and the neighbourhood of Xanenetla which has become the heart of  street art for the city with its 75 murals.
• Explore the secret tunnels built throughout the 17th and 19th centuries between the Puente de Ovando and the Pasaje Histórico 5 de Mayo
• Discover Puebla’s forts area with the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe, the cable car and the free projection show (Thursday to Sunday at 8:45pm)

Also try Ancho Reyes , a local liqueur made with poblano peppers , and the traditional sweets of the Calle de los Dulces .

Spend the night in Puebla .

How to get to Puebla from Mexico City:

• By car: 2h15 on the Mexico – Puebla/Mexico 150D highway
• By bus : Estrella Roja or ADO bus to Puebla, departing from the terminal TAPO .

My advice If you go by bus , I recommend that you only go to Puebla (without Cholula), because there is a lot to see.

• With a tour: it is a very convenient option to visit Puebla and Cholula from Mexico City if you are not traveling by car. It includes pick-up from your hotel, a visit to the Great Pyramid of Cholula, with lunch and a tour of Puebla’s main attractions. Book the tour here:
• Hotel Santiago : the ideal hotel for a cheap stay in Puebla , practically on the corner of the Zocalo, with a rooftop terrace offering a beautiful view of the cathedral . Rooms are only 30 $usd per night!
• NH Puebla Centro Historico : a hotel in the historic center of Puebla,  with a rooftop terrace that has a swimming pool , a gym, available parking, good wifi and a buffet with breakfast included , starting at 48 $usd per night!

• Banyan Tree Puebla : this is my favorite hotel in Puebla , the perfect choice for a romantic stay or to enjoy real luxurious comfort in the heart of the city. There’s a terrace garden, a rooftop , a pool and spa overlooking the volcanoes, a restaurant with a terrace, and a good breakfast. For 226 $usd per night.

3) Oaxaca (3 days)

The state of Oaxaca is known for its rich culture, handicrafts and gastronomy!

There is a lot to see as it is a very large region, but as you will only spend 3 days in Oaxaca on this 21 day road trip in Mexico , this is what I suggest as a program:

Day 1 – Oaxaca de Juarez City

In the morning, leave Puebla for the city of Oaxaca de Juarez , the beautiful capital of the state of Oaxaca .

The church and former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzman is a must-see in Oaxaca with its baroque façade, chapels, pure gold altarpiece and beautiful cloister with a fountain.

The church houses the Museum of Cultures , considered the most important museum in the state of Oaxaca, with an exhibition ranging from 10,000 BC to the 20th century.

There you will also find the famous Ethnobotanical Garden of Oaxaca , with hundreds of species of plants from different regions of the state of Oaxaca, including a 5 ton cactus that is 1000 years old!

Don’t miss the Mercado 20 de Noviembre , the most famous market in Oaxaca, with its roasted meat aisle called “ Pasillo de Humo “.

Besides meat, there is also a great variety of gastronomic products , making it the best place to try traditional cuisine at a good price : tlayudas, tamales, mole negro, Oaxacan chocolate, etc.

Explore the main square , the Metropolitan Cathedral of Oaxaca, the Government Palace with its beautiful murals, and take a stroll along the Andador Turistico , one of the most beautiful streets in Oaxaca with museums, art galleries, restaurants, and craft shops.

How to get to Oaxaca from Puebla:

• By car: 4h via Cordoba – Puebla/Mexico 150D, then Mexico 135D International Highway to Oaxaca de Juarez
• By bus : 4h40 by ADO bus. I suggest you take the bus that leaves at 8:25 to arrive at 13:05 and not waste the day

Day 2 – Hierve el Agua

70 km from Oaxaca City, Hierve el Agua is a set of petrified waterfalls with beautiful views over the valley.

You can walk along the trail to reach the bottom of the falls (20 min), and then continue to the water ponds and enjoy the viewpoints.

It is an amazing place to take pictures, as the scenery is unique, but you can also enjoy the hot springs all year round!

How to get to Hierve el Agua from Oaxaca:

• By car : take Highway 190 to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, then take the detours to Hierve el Agua on Highway 179
• By bus : take a colectivo or bus from   this bus stop to Mitla (50 min), then another colectivo from the Mitla bus terminal to Hierve el Agua (50 min)
• With a tour : this is the best option so you don’t have to worry about transportation as it includes pick up from your hotel in Oaxaca .

The tour starts in Santa Maria del Tule to see its giant 40-metre high tree, then you will go to Teotitlan del Valle , famous for its textile handicrafts.

You will then visit Mitla, the second most important archaeological site (after Monte Alban ), before going to Hierve el Agua .

The day will end with a visit to a traditional mezcal distillery , with tasting, before returning to Oaxaca .

Day 3 – Monte Albán and small towns

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Monte Albán is the most important archaeological site in Oaxaca and a must-see on a 21-day tour of Mexico .

It was an important urban, political, and ceremonial centre, occupied for more than 1,500 years by the Olmecs , Zapotecs and Mixtecs .

You can visit the  museum site and climb the numerous structures with magnificent views of the surrounding area.

Monte Alban is only 20 minutes from the centre of Oaxaca City, making it easily accessible.

For the full experience, I suggest you take this tour to Monte Alban , which then takes you along the artisans’ route :

• The village of San Antonio Arrazola , whose artisans specialize in the creation of alebrijes , which are colorful figures known throughout the country that often represent fantastic creatures.
• Cuilapam de Guerrero , a town of Mixtec origin, where a Dominican monastery was built in the 16th century and is considered an architectural jewel.
• San Bartolo Coyotepec , famous for its art of “barro negro”, a black clay pottery that can be seen being made in a workshop.

Highlights include a rooftop bar with stunning views , a delicious breakfast, an on-site restaurant, and a café serving freshly baked bread!
• Quinta Real Oaxaca: Located in a former convent from the 16th century, 500 meters from Santo Domingo Church and 700 meters from the Zocalo. Elegant room and romantic atmosphere, from 400 $usd per night . Strong points: the stunning architecture, the outdoor pool, the gourmet restaurant. This is my choice for a luxury stay in Oaxaca!

4) San Cristobal de las Casas (3 days)

Leave Oaxaca to discover another must-see region on a three-week tour of Mexico : fabulous Chiapas !

Day 1 – Today you will head to San Cristobal de las Casas , the cultural capital of Chiapas .

You’ll need to leave early to make the most of the day, as it’s a 9 hour journey .

If you are travelling to Mexico by bus, you can take the night bus the night before .

In San Cristobal de las Casas you can visit the cathedral, the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya with its exhibition of 500 beautiful textiles from Chiapas and Guatemala , the Guadalupe church, and the Na Bolom cultural centre .

Stroll along Real de Guadalupe, a charming pedestrian street with cafes and restaurants.

Overnight stay in San Cristobal de las Casas

How to get to San Cristobal de las Casas from Oaxaca:

• By car : 9h20 travel time via Carretera Oaxaca – Tehuantepec/Tehuantepec – Oaxaca/Mexico 190; La Ventosa – Salina Cruz Superhighway 185D; San Pedro Tapanatepec/Mexico 190 to Tuxtla Gutierrez and finally Carretera 190D to San Cristobal de las Casas.

Day 2 – El Chiflón and the Montebello Lagoons

Today you will discover two of the most beautiful natural sites in Chiapas .

In the morning, start with the waterfalls of El Chiflón , hidden between the mountains and the jungle.

You will walk along the trail (1km) of an ecotourism centre that runs along five waterfalls , the highest of which is 120m high!

After the 1h-1h30 walk, continue to the Montebello Lakes,  which are located on the border with Guatemala .

This 60 km² national park is home to some 50 lakes and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve .

Of course you can’t see them all, but I recommend the lakes of Tziscao, Pojoj, Cinco Lagos, and Montebello .

How to get to El Chiflón and Montebello from San Cristóbal:

• By car : 2h to El Chiflón in the direction of Comitán de Domínguez. To get to Montebello Park (1h40) you have to return to Comitán, and take Highway 190 and 307. Drive carefully because there are many curves and speed bumps on the road!
• By public transport : this is not a recommended option, as you will have to make several connections and the return transport will be quite complicated.
• With a tour : this is the option I chose as it is the most comfortable since it is a very long day’s visit . The tour starts at 8am and ends at 8pm, with pick up at the hotel, free visit to the waterfalls of El Chiflón, and visit to 4 lakes of Montebello.

Day 3 – The Sumidero Canyon or Tzotzil villages

For this last day in the region, choose between two tours: the Sumidero Canyon or, to discover the local culture, the villages of Zinacantán and San Juan Chamula .

Option 1 – The Sumidero Canyon

It is a national park of more than 20,000 hectares that protects a large canyon formed more than 35 million years ago.

You can get different views of the impressive canyon by taking a boat ride on the Gijalva River (2h30) that runs through it and by following the route of the viewpoints .

Ideally you should do both to enjoy the full experience!

How to get to the Sumidero Canyon from San Cristobal:

• By car : take the Libramiento Norte highway and follow the sign “Calzada Al Sumidero” to the northeast
• By public transport: if you travel by bus, I recommend that you do only the boat trip, as it is the most accessible. Take a bus (1h15) to Tuxtla Gutierrez, then another bus (45 min) to the main square of Chiapa de Corzo. From there, head to the Chiapa de Corzo pier .
• With a tour: this is the option I chose like many travellers and I loved the experience! The tour is in small groups, and includes transportation from San Cristobal, the boat tour with the viewpoints, and a stop in the town of Chiapa de Corzo.

Option 2 – Zinacantan and San Juan Chamula

These traditional Mayan Tzotzil villages are only 30 minutes from San Cristobal de las Casas and can easily be visited in half a day.

In Zinacantán you can see the typical church of San Lorenzo and learn about the traditional weaving techniques for which the town is famous for.

San Juan Chamula is mainly known for its church, where you can see an impressive mix of Catholic beliefs and Mayan rituals .

My advice These are autonomous communities that have their own laws.

How to get to San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán from San Cristóbal:

• By car: to go to San Juan Chamula, take the Puerto Caté-San Cristóbal road (23min), and to go to Zinacantán, turn off at km9 onto Calzada Juárez/Zinacantán (24 min).
• By public transport : by colectivo (15$mxn) leaving from the municipal market
• With a tour: I went with a day tour and I recommend it because the guide’s information was very interesting. It includes a visit to Zinacantan (textile demonstration and tasting of pox , a traditional liquor) and a free visit to San Juan Chamula. You can booked it here:

• The Coffee Bean Hostel : a very cozy hostel with nice common areas, a restaurant and bar, a garden, terrace with hammocks, pool tables and several breakfast options, starting at 12 $usd in a shared dorm!
• Parador Margarita : only 3 blocks from the main square and the bus station, it is a small haven of peace with a garden and very comfortable beds. Wifi and breakfast are included, only 46 $usd per night!
• Hotel Diego de Mazariegos : a magnificent 18th century mansion with a preserved Mexican colonial style, a charming interior courtyard with a fountain and classic decoration in warm tones. The hotel has two restaurants and a bar. Wifi and breakfast included, from only 73 $usd per night!
• Casa Lum Hotel Boutique my favourite accommodation in San Cristobal de las Casas ! It is a small and sophisticated hotel decorated between modernity and traditional design. Includes a great restaurant, a terrace with a panoramic view over the city and a garden. A few steps from the main square, it is the ideal place for lovers, from 164 $usd per night!

5) Palenque (1 day)

Discover Palenque , one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, which should be included in a 21-day itinerary in Mexico .

From San Cristóbal de las Casas it will take you between 5 and 5h30. To make the journey easier I recommend these stops:

• Toniná : a Mayan site whose main pyramid is twice as high as Teotihuacán’ s Pyramid of the Sun!
• Cascadas de Agua Azul : turquoise waterfalls located in a Biosphere Reserve.
• Misol-Ha: a 30-metre waterfall in the jungle where you can also go swimming!

When you arrive in the city of Palenque, take the time to have lunch and recharge your batteries before visiting the ancient city of Palenque .

This city, protected by lush vegetation, was one of the most powerful of its time , like Tikal in Guatemala or Calakmul .

Start at the Palenque Museum, one of the most important museums dedicated to Mayan archaeology, which offers a very good introduction to the site.

There are many structures to discover, such as the Palace, which is the complex of Palenque , the Group of the Crosses and the famous Temple of the Inscriptions where they found the tomb of the ruler K’inich Janaab’ Pakal (7th century).

If you have visited the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City , you will have seen the impressive reconstruction of his burial chamber.

Spend the night in the city of Palenque .

How to get to Palenque from San Cristóbal de las Casas:

• By car: take Highway 199 through Ocosingo (5 h). Misol-Ha and Agua Azul are on Highway 199. For Toniná, take the detours on Highway 218 in Ocosingo.
• By public transport: 9h by bus direct to Palenque (departures at 5h and 8h). For Misol-Ha and Agua Azul, you can take a colectivo to Ocosingo, then another colectivo to Palenque.
• With a a guided tour: considering the long trip, if you don’t have a car, the easiest way is to take the tour from San Cristobal de las Casas . It includes pick-up from your hotel, breakfast, visits to Agua Azul, Misol-Ha, and Palenque.

• Mitico El Castillo : the most unusual hotel that looks like a movie decor. It’s a castle that houses a room, a shared room, a swimming pool, and a kitchen. This is the best cheap hotel in Palenque, starting at only 14 $usd for a bedroom or 38 $usd for a room!
• Cabañas Kin Balam Palenque : another budget hotel in Palenque that has the advantage of being in the jungle, with fruit trees and exotic animal sounds and within walking distance of the ruins . Includes a pool and a restaurant, starting at only 24 $usd for a dorm or 43$usd for a private room!
• Adriana Villas : an  oasis of tranquility ideal for couples,  with rooms and villas in the jungle, a swimming pool, hammocks, large gardens, and a rooftop terrace.  With delicious breakfasts included, starting at 80 $usd per night!
• Chan Kah Resort village : ideal for relaxing during a family trip to Palenque , offering excellent value for money . Bungalows for 2 to 4 people, 2 large natural pools, a bar, restaurant and spa, from only 100$ usd for a bungalow!

6) Campeche (1-2 days)

Campeche is a rather quiet colonial city, not very touristy, and its ancient walled city , declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site , has a lot of charm.

In one or two days in Campeche , you can:

• Stroll along the city walls from Baluarte San Francisco to Baluarte San Carlos , which houses the city museum.
• Visit the museum of Mayan architecture.
• See the main square , with the cathedral, the cultural centre El Palacio, and Casa No. 6.
• Take the tourist tram that takes you around the main attractions of Campeche (45min-1h).
• Visit the archaeological site of Edzná founded in 600 B.C., just 1 hour from Campeche.
• Taste the chocolates of Chocol’Ha , with its beautiful Mexican decoration.
• Walk along the Malecon in front of the Gulf of Mexico , the perfect place to watch the sunset.

How to get to Campeche from Palenque:

• By car : 4h40 via Highway 199 Palenque-Pakana, then Villahermosa-Chetumal 186 to Escárcega and Highway 180D to Campeche.
• By bus: there are two ADO night buses (00h50-6h50 and 2h20-8h20) and a day bus at 11:20 that arrives at 17:20.
• Melisa Hostal : very well located hostel in a beautiful typical house in the center of Campeche , friendly staff, with a small pool, access to a kitchen, and very clean and comfortable mattresses. Bed in shared room, from only 20 $usd per night
• Casa Serena Beautiful Colonial Loft : a spacious apartment in the center of Campeche that offers excellent value for money . With air conditioning, a living room, kitchen, terrace, good wifi with breakfast included. Sleeps 2 to 4 people , starting at 125 $usd per night
• Boutique Hotel Casa Don Gustavo : an elegant 18th century manor house completely restored on a pedestrian street in downtown Campeche. A beautiful blend of modernity and colonial decor, with comfortable air-conditioned rooms. Wifi, outdoor pool, jacuzzi and a very tasty à la carte breakfast await guests . Starting at 65 $usd!

7) Merida (2 days)

On the next leg of your 3-week Yucatan trip , leave Campeche for Merida , the capital of the state of Yucatan .

It’s a city that, although larger and more touristy, will certainly remind you of Campeche for its architecture.

In two days in Merida you can:

1. See the flamingos of Celestún

The town of Celestún is the gateway to the Celestún Biosphere Reserve: the best place to see pink flamingos in Mexico!

You can get close to them with a boat trip (1h20-2h30) that will take you to discover the reserve and to swim in a natural pool.

In addition to the boat trip, you can also enjoy the beaches of Celestun , much quieter than the beaches of the Riviera Maya that await you later on in your  road trip through Mexico .

How to get to Celestún from Mérida

• By car : 1h30 on Highway 181
• By bus: 2h30 with an ADO leaving from the Terminal Noreste
• With a tour: it is also possible to take this tour to Celestún from Mérida with hotel pick-up, a boat trip to see the flamingos, a visit to the mangroves, and a lunch on the beach. Book it here:

2. Strolling around the city of Merida

Mérida is known as the safest city in Mexico .

You can explore the Plaza Grande , home to the Casa de Montejo, the cathedral, and the Macay Museum, and then walk along Calle 64 to see its beautiful and colorful houses.

Visit the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya and its collection of 1000 archaeological pieces.

Walk along Paseo de Montejo to the Canton Palace , home of the Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatan.

At night, don’t miss the atmosphere of Parque Santa Lucia with its terraces and music!

3. Visit the archaeological site of Uxmal

Uxmal was one of the most important Mayan cities, and a great ally of Chichén Itzá .

Built between the 5th and 6th centuries, it stands out for the richness of the reliefs on its façades, typical of the Puuc style .

You will be able to see the Pyramid of the Magician, the Great Pyramid, the Nunnery Quadrangle, the Mayan ball court and go up to the Governor’s Palace, which offers a beautiful view of Uxmal.

After the visit, you can also explore the Choco-Story chocolate museum with its beautiful tropical garden and the Mayan site of Kabah .

How to get to Uxmal from Merida:

• By car: 1h15 on Federal Highway 261 towards Santa Elena. Parking costs 80 pesos. Kabah is further along the same road, 20 minutes from Uxmal.
• By bus : 2h, ticket 84 pesos, 1 departure per day at 9h05 from the TAME terminal and 1 return at 15h
• With an organised tour: this is the ideal option for not having to worry about transport! The tour from Merida includes transportation in an air-conditioned van, the guided visit to Uxmal with free time, and the visit to Kabah.

How to get to Merida from Campeche:

• By car : 2h15 on Highway 180 to Merida
• By bus : 2h30 by bus ADO
• Nomadas : the best hostel in Merida with a very nice atmosphere, located in the center of Merida. It has a swimming pool surrounded by hammocks and plants, possibility of classes (yoga, cooking classes, etc.). Starting at only 18$usd per night!
• El Gran Hotel : ideally located in the very center of Merida, right next to the cathedral. It is a very charming hotel, where time seems to have stopped with its colonial look and beautiful woodwork. There’s a restaurant, the rooms are spacious and the wifi works well. Good value for money, starting at only 59$usd per night!
• Hotel Hacienda Merida VIP : this small, luxurious hotel is the ideal place to spend a few romantic days in Merida . Located in the historic center, it is an elegant hacienda-style building, illuminated by candlelight at nightfall. Here you will find a charming swimming pool, comfortable rooms, a restaurant, and a bar. Starting at 165 $usd per night
• Hotel Boutique Mérida Santiago : this is a small, comfortable hotel with a colorful hacienda look, modern and with a traditional Mexican touch. There’s a swimming pool with sun loungers and umbrellas. With excellent homemade breakfasts and spacious rooms, it is the ideal hotel if you are looking for comfort without falling into luxury. Starting at 197 $usd per night

8) Chichen Itza and Valladolid (1 day)

Say goodbye to Merida and head to Valladolid , a beautiful colonial city that you can explore in one day!

On the way you will find the must-see of your Mexico sightseeing tour: Chichen Itza !

Founded in the 6th century by the Itzaes and then controlled by the Toltecs from the 10th century until the 13th century. It was, at its peak, the most powerful city in the entire Yucatan peninsula .

Today it is the most famous Mayan site in the world, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World .

In 3h you will see many structures (temples, plazas, platforms) such as El Castillo, which is the main pyramid of Chichen Itza, the astronomical observatory, the court for the Mayan ball game and the temple of the Jaguars.

To avoid long lines, I suggest you buy these skip-the-line tickets to Chichen Itza here :

After visiting Chichen Itza , cool off in a cenote .

For example, you can go to Cenote Zací in the centre of Valladolid . Also, if you eat 100 pesos in the restaurant of the cenote, the entrance is free .

Spend the afternoon visiting Valladolid .

Discover the Francisco Canton Park , the San Servacio Church, and the murals of the Municipal Palace, and then the San Roque Museum .

Stroll along the beautiful Calzada de los Frailes to the Convent of San Bernardino .

How to get to Chichen Itza from Merida:

• By car : 1h30 by Carretera Costera del Golfo E/Mérida – Valladolid/México 180 E and Kantunil- Cancun /México 180D
• By bus : the ADO bus leaves at 7.15 am and arrives at 9.00 am, it leaves you right in front of the entrance
• With a tour :If you want a guided visit of Chichén Itzá , this tour is a great option. It includes hotel pick up in Mérida , a tour of Chichen Itza with free time, breakfast and lunch, a cenote stop, Izamal and Valladolid. You can book it here:

How to get to Valladolid from Chichén Itzá:

• By car : 40 minutes on the Gulf/Mexico Coastal Highway 180 E
• By bus : there is an ADO bus at 16h30 that arrives at 17h but I think the timetable is not ideal and you will lose part of your day waiting. I suggest you take a taxi or colectivo to Pisté (8 min) and from Pisté take the bus to Valladolid (47 min).

• Le Muuch Hotel : A hotel located 5 minutes away from the main park Francisco Canton Rosado . Excellent service, with indoor and outdoor swimming pools with hammocks, rooms with garden view, air conditioning, and a bar and restaurant. A la carte breakfast included, starting from 140 $usd per night.
• Hotel Zentik Project : This is definitely one of my favorite hotels in Mexico and the best hotel in Valladolid ! Beautiful Mayan-style cabanas with murals done by local and international artists. There’s a restaurant and bar, an outdoor pool with hammocks, and a saltwater pool in an underground cave . Very good breakfast included, starting from 380 $usd per night.

9) Holbox (2-3 days)

Follow your 21-day Mexico itinerary to Holbox , the ideal island to relax for the next few days!

In the morning, head to the port of Chiquilá and take the ferry to Holbox .

The great thing about Holbox is that, although it’s quite close to Cancun and Playa del Carmen, it’s far away enough from the hustle and bustle of the Riviera Maya .

People come here to relax with a margarita in hand and their feet in the sand. So enjoy it!  😊

There are small streets with lots of colorful murals and long sandy beaches, such as Punta Mosquito and Punta Cocos , not to be missed!

I also recommend you to take the boat trip (3 hours) to Isla Pájaros, Laguna Yalahau, and Isla de la Pasión, where you can see many species of birds and swim in a refreshing lagoon.

Between June and September , you can swim with whale sharks in the Yum Balam reserve!

How to get to Holbox from Valladolid:

• By car : 3h50 by car on Carretera 180D to Cancún, then QROO5 to Chiquilá. Then take the ferry to Holbox (30 min trip, leaves every 30 minutes). Leave the car in one of the secure car parks as you cannot board the ferry with the car!
• By bus : take a bus from Noreste Yucatan (4h) to Chiquilá, then the ferry to Holbox (30 min)
• Kin Camping : This is the best place to sleep cheap in Holbox ! They are tents (camping) with double beds, hot water, a good atmosphere, hammocks, and a bar. They also propose several fun activities, from only 28 $usd  per night!
• Casa Chujuk : A hotel offering excellent value for money , which is becoming increasingly difficult to find in Holbox! Very clean and bright rooms, with comfortable mattresses, a small pool to cool off, and good wifi, from 50 $usd per night!
• Ensueño Holbox & Beach Club : Suites and flats with kitchenette for up to 5 people . Roof terrace, two swimming pools, a beach club with good food and music! Breakfast is included, from 130 $usd per night!
• Beachfront Hotel La Palapa – Adults only : A nice hotel very well located near the centre, with a beachfront, and a quiet beach that has excellent cocktails at the bar. Spacious rooms and very good service. Excellent breakfast included, from 250 $usd per night!
• Villas Flamingos : Located on a private beach on Holbox Island, this 4-star hotel offers cozy and colorful bungalows with private terrace and hammock. From 387 $usd per night, breakfast included. Strong points: the stunning sea view, the relaxing atmosphere, the friendly staff, the delicious food. This is my suggestion for a peaceful and charming stay in Holbox!

10) Tulum (2 days)

It will be hard to leave a paradise like Holbox , but luckily this 21-22 day trip to Mexico continues in Tulum , which is also a destination known for its beautiful beaches.

Day 1 – Visit the ruins of Tulum and its beaches

In the morning, take the ferry back to Chiquilá and then take the road to Tulum.

Start with a visit to the archaeological site of Tulum , one of the most emblematic places of the Riviera Maya . It has to be said that it is situated in an exceptional location, facing the Caribbean Sea .

In 2h you will have time to visit the main structures of the site such as the Castle, the wall, the temples of the Frescoes, and the Descending God, then go down to the small beach.

Depending on the time of day, you can cool off in one of Tulum’s cenotes or head to the Beach Strip , the street in the hotel zone with various cafes and restaurants.

Afterwards, enjoy Tulum’s famous beaches , such as Playa Paraiso or Playa Las Palmas.

Spend the night in Tulum

How to get to Tulum from Chiquilá

• By car: 2h30 on Carretera QROO 5 and then Quintana Roo Nuevo Durango – Coba/QROO 109
• By bus: take a colectivo (leaving at 8:00 am or 11:30am) to Playa del Carmen (2h), then an ADO bus or colectivo to Tulum (1h)

Day 2 – Sian Ka’an Reserve

Today, continue your three-week road trip to Mexico to the Sian Ka’an Reserve , located south of Tulum .

This is a large protected area, declared a Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is home to a rich biodiversity and is truly a beautiful scenery.

As it is impossible to see everything in one day, you will have to choose between an tour to Punta Allen (1 day) or Muyil (half day):

Option 1: Punta Allen

Punta Allen is a fishing village that offers a more complete experience than most as it is actually inland from the reserve . The visit allows you to see the coast of Sian Ka’an with its beach, or take a boat ride to see dolphins , manatees , and other animals!

As the road is complicated (and not in good condition) you will need a car with good suspension, ideally a 4×4, to get there. Or you can take a tour from Tulum which you can book here :

Option 2: Muyil

Muyil is much closer to Tulum than Punta Allen . You will be able to see the Mayan site of Muyil surrounded by jungle, and enjoy the clear waters among mangroves and orchids.

As Muyil is easier to reach , you can even take the ADO bus (20 min) in the direction of Chunyaxché or take this tour from Tulum with lunch included :

• Mayan Monkey Tulum : an excellent value for money . Nice modern hostel with a good atmosphere, a pool, bar and garden. Including fast wifi, kitchen access, yoga classes, coworking spaces, and bike and motorcycle rentals. Dorms and private rooms starting at only 24 $usd per night.
• Casa Almendro : if you are looking for a little more comfort, you will like this small cheap hotel in the center of Tulum . It’s a green oasis with a rooftop terrace with chairs and hammocks. There are king size beds and breakfast is included, from only 50 $usd per night!
• Diamante K : is a high-end hotel but at a very fair price , which is exceptional in Tulum, especially for a hotel with direct access to the beach in the hotel zone! Bohemian chic atmosphere, including a restaurant, hammocks and beds on the private beach, and a massage service. Bungalows are 207 $usd per night.
• Habitas Tulum : this small eco-friendly hotel with a chic design is ideal for a romantic stay in Tulum . It is a true oasis of peace, hidden among the palm trees, with a magnificent swimming pool and a private beach. There are also yoga classes on the terrace at sunset. From 371 $usd per night!
• Kanan Tulum- Adults Only : this is the ultimate option for a luxury stay in Tulum . It is an ecological hotel for adults only, located on a beautiful private beach with hammocks and beds. With a fantastic rooftop terrace with a bar; the hotel also has an excellent restaurant, great rooms and a very friendly welcome. From 566 $usd per night!

11) Playa del Carmen (2-3 days)

For the last leg of this 20-21-22 day road trip through Mexico , return to Playa del Carmen .

This small town has grown tremendously in recent years, positioning itself as an alternative destination to Cancun , with some cheaper options and some easy to access beaches.

Many come here to party and hang out at a beach club, but what I really like about Playa del Carmen is that it is strategically located to explore the entire Riviera Maya .

Day 1 – Rio Secreto Caves and Xpu-Ha Beach

Today, start by discovering the incredible world of Rio Secreto , one of my  favorite places in the Yucatan!

This is a 600-metre guided tour that takes you through some semi-flooded caves and an underground river that forms part of a giant 40 km network of stalactites and stalagmites.

The tour alternates between walking and swimming in the crystal clear water, with a helmet, headlamp, and wetsuit as the water is cool.

Visits only take place in small groups in order to preserve the site and booking is compulsory :

After the tour to Rio Secreto , which lasts 3h-3h30, you can go to Xpu-Ha beach : it is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Riviera Maya , with its calm waters and white sand!

Or if you prefer, you can cool off in the nearby Cenote Azul .

Spend the night in Playa del Carmen

How to get to Playa del Carmen from Tulum:

• By car: 50 minutes on Highway 307 along the Riviera Maya
• By bus: 1h by ADO or colectivo bus

How to get to Rio Secreto from Playa del Carmen:

• By car: 12 minutes, on Highway 307 towards Tuulm
• By public transport : ADO bus or colectivo, frequent departures

Day 2 – Cozumel Island

Easily accessible by ferry from Playa del Carmen , the large island of Cozumel is a must-see if you have 3 weeks to visit Mexico .

This destination is known as one of the best places in the world to dive because of its clear, calm waters and location which is very close to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef .

There are many reefs to explore, for all skill levels: Palancar , Columbia, Paraiso, Punta Tunich, Chankanaab , Santa Rosa, the Devil’s Throat (an underwater cave), and the Felipe Xicoténcatl wreck.

The island also has beautiful beaches: the Punta Sur reserve , the Chankanaab park, and the archaeological site of San Gervasio .

• If you are not going by car: 45min-1h by ferry from the Terminal Marítima Navega with Ultramar or Winjet Fast Ferry
• If you decide to cross with your car: by ferry from Punta Venado  with Transcaribe or Ultramar Carga
• Several tours to Cozumel already include transportation from the Riviera Maya

Day 3   – Free day in Playa del Carmen

As this 20-21-22 days tour in Mexico covers a lot of ground, I think it’s a good idea to take this last day of your holiday in the sun to relax!

Relax on the beaches of Playa del Carmen like Playa Mamitas, Playacar or Punta Esmeralda, also walk along Quinta Avenida , the main street with many bars, restaurants, and shops.

If you are travelling by public transport, it is best to take an ADO bus , which will drop you off directly at the airport.

There are many routes a day, I recommend you visit the ADO website to check for timetables and to buy your ticket in advance.

This incredibly diverse country stretches from the deserts and canyons of the north to the grand colonial cities of the centre and the Maya ruins, beaches and jungles of the south. Given the vast breadth of Mexico, it’s more sensible and rewarding to concentrate on one or two sections of the country when planning your travel. Here are some of the best places to visit in Mexico:

Mexico City

Mexico City , though a nightmare of urban sprawl, is totally fascinating, and the capital of the nation in every way – artistic, political, cultural. It is one of the world’s mega-cities, with over 25 million people occupying a shallow mountain bowl at over 2400m above sea level. Spreading out beyond the federal district which is supposed to contain it, the city is at once edgy and yet laid-back at the same time. Around the city lie the chief relics of the pre-Hispanic cultures of central Mexico: the massive pyramids of Teotihuacán and the main Toltec site at Tula.

East of Mexico City is the elegant city of Puebla , known for its colonial architecture and fine cuisine. The republic’s fifth-largest city is an easy 40-minute trip from Tlaxcala or a couple of hours by bus from Mexico City, with glorious views of snow-capped Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl on the way. Puebla has a remarkable concentration of sights, including a fabulous cathedral, a “hidden” convent, museums and grand mansions, while the mountainous surrounding country is in places startlingly beautiful.

To visitors, Tulum can mean several things. First, it’s one of the most picturesque of all the ancient Maya sites, poised on 15m-high cliffs above the Caribbean. Tulum also refers to a stretch of white beach, with turquoise water and candlelit cabañas. Finally, it’s a booming town (often called Tulum Pueblo to distinguish it from the beach) that has evolved from roadside waystation to real population centre with a thriving tourism core.

The state of Oaxaca is one of the most enticing places to visit in Mexico. The state capital, cosmopolitan yet utterly Mexican, encapsulates much of what the region has to offer. Nowhere else in the country are the fiestas so exuberant, the markets so colourful or the old languages still so widely spoken. There are indigenous traditions in the villages that long predate the Spanish Conquest; yet the city can also offer sophisticated modern dining, great accommodation and wild nightlife.

Acapulco and Pacific Coast

The journey north from Acapulco to Puerto Vallarta, some 800km along the Pacific coast, is defined by languid beach life at its finest. There’s history here, to be sure, but it’s the buttery sands studded with palms, the makeshift bars on the beach, lagoons and torpid villages that dominate. Separating these stretches of wild, untouched coastline are some of the most popular and enjoyable resorts in Mexico.

Few tourists venture over to the Gulf coast, despite the attractions of Veracruz and its mysterious ruins. A pity, as for music and general bonhomie, the city’s central plaza is one of the finest places to visit in Mexico. The fertile, tropical coastal plain gave rise to the earliest Mexican civilizations: Olmec culture thrived in southern Veracruz from 1200 BC, while Classic Veracruz flourished between 250 and 900 AD at centres such as El Tajín. Today, Huastec and Totonac culture remains strong in the north.

Independent travellers often find the glitz of Mexico’s mammoth resort city off-putting. Certainly, all the concrete can be a downer. But a night spent in Cancún doesn’t have to be wasted, so long as you appreciate the energetic city as a successful frontier experiment, rather than lament its lack of history. A closer look reveals hidden beach bars and inexpensive taco stands frequented by friendly cancunenses .

Playa del Carmen

Once a soporific fishing village where travellers camped out en route to Isla Cozumel, Playa del Carmen is now a hot spot with pretensions of being the next Miami Beach. Mexico City’s elite pop in to “Playa”, as do day-trippers from Cancún and passengers from cruise ships docked on Cozumel. The quieter north side is relatively cosmopolitan and calm, and the nightlife, in particular, has a hip edge.

Guadalajara

Mexico’s second city, easy-going Guadalajara is packed with elegant buildings and vibrant little squares. One thing no visitor should miss is hearing mariachi in its home town, specifically at the Plaza de Los Mariachis. Outside the city, the land is spectacularly green and mountainous, studded with volcanoes and lakes, most famously Laguna de Chapala.

Baja California

Graced with tantalizing desert landscapes, lush oases and rich marine life, Baja California is one of the most compelling places to visit in Mexico. Its human history is no less enticing, with a legacy of remote cave paintings, crumbling Spanish missions and fabulous seafood. Among the most magical sights in Baja is the annual grey whale migration from December to April. Spot the magnificent creatures at the Laguna Ojo de Liebre, just off Guerrero Negro, or the lagoon near San Ignacio.

Yucatán Peninsula

In the Yucatán, traditional indigenous life sits side by side with massive tourist attractions such as the great ruins of Chichén Itzá and the super-resort of Cancún. Once the province of Maya rebels and palm-plantation owners, the Caribbean coast is now the so-called Riviera Maya, which includes the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. But beyond these big centres, you’ll discover underground springs known as cenotes to the north, along with flocks of flamingo and sea turtles along the coast.

Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is the most famous, the most extensively restored and by far the most visited of all Maya sites. It lies conveniently along the main highway from Mérida to Cancún , a little more than 200km from the Caribbean coast. Arrive early to wander in relative peace around the extraordinary ruins, with its vertiginous temple, Chac-mool figures and dramatic, snail-shaped observatory.

North Mexico

Rich in legends of the country’s revolutionary past, Mexico’s north has a modern history dominated by its relationship with the neighbouring United States. Though the region is far less visited than the southern states, cross-border trade – as much about the movement of people as goods – means it’s one of the most dynamic parts of Mexico. It’s not all business, though. Rugged and untamed, the north is home to deserts, mountains, seedy frontier towns, archeological remains and modern cities, as well as a rich ranching culture.

Mexico is a year-round destination, with most visitors sticking on the whole to the highlands in summer and the coasts in winter. June to October is generally the rainy season, though the intensity of rainfall varies from place to place. Late winter is the traditional tourist season; December through to April the busiest months. November is probably the best time to visit Mexico, with the rains over, the land still fresh and the peak season not yet begun.

It is possible to travel to Mexico overland from the US via train, bus or car, though be prepared for long and often uncomfortable journeys. It is much quicker and easier to get to Mexico by plane. There are plenty of direct and connecting flights from major cities in North America into Mexico City and other popular resorts. Canada is not as well connected as the US, though Air Canada and Aeroméxico serve Mexico City. Several direct flights run to Mexico City and Cancún from London , Birmingham and Manchester , though you will have to change planes if you fly from anywhere else in the UK or Ireland. Bear in mind Mexico is a large country, and journeys between key destinations can be very long. Although public transport is frequent and reasonably efficient everywhere, taking an internal flight at least once may be worthwhile for the time it saves. If you’re travelling around Mexico on a budget, buses are your best bet. Only a couple of tourist train routes exist: the Copper Canyon railway in Chihuahua and the Tequila Express from Guadalajara. Ferries connect Baja California with the Pacific mainland, and smaller boats serve islands off the coasts. Driving in Mexico requires care, but renting a car is often an extremely good way of quickly seeing a small area that would otherwise take days to explore using public transport. • Cenotes of Yucatán . Vast sun-lit caverns filled with water, the cenotes of northern Yucatán are magical places for a refreshing dip. X’keken and Samula are two of the best.
• Acapulco’s cliff divers . Watch the clavadistas plunge into the sea from precipitous cliffs.
• Chichén Itzá . The most famous of the Maya cities, the sprawling ruins and complex carvings will take a couple of days to explore.
• Tulum . This important Maya spiritual and cultural centre is one of the most picturesque, with a spectacular beach.
• Tequila . Visit the town that gave birth to Mexico’s favourite tipple, surrounded by fields of blue agave, and enjoy tours of local distilleries.
• Baja Whale watching . From December to April, thousands of grey whales come to mate in the lagoons of Guerrero Negro and San Ignacio.
• Real de Catorce . This picturesque ghost-town once thrived on the wealth of its silver mines. Huichol pilgrims visit the nearby desert in search of peyote.
• Museo Frida Kahlo . Politics, art and national identity combine at the home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
• Diving . The pristine islands and shimmering reefs just off the Pacific Coast are prime diving destinations.
• Lago de Pátzcuaro . Most famous for its Day of the Dead celebrations, this enchanting lake is a worthy destination year-round.
• Oaxaca markets . Any market in Mexico is a feast for the senses, but Oaxaca’s are especially vibrant, with everything from fresh produce to some of the country’s most imaginative textiles.
• Street eats . Sample tortas and tacos at street food stalls and stands clustered along the pavements of Mexico City .
• Xochimilco . Take in the carnival atmosphere and colours while being punted around the canals and serenaded by mariachi bands at the Mexico City suburb of Xochimilco.
• Driving Hwy-1 . One of the world’s greatest road journeys, driving from the US border to the southern tip of Baja California takes you through deserts, isolated mountain ranges and tropical beach towns.
• Lucha libre in Mexico City . Watched masked heroes and villains partake in fantastical wrestling ( lucha libre ) competitions, held in over a dozen venues throughout the capital.

Itinerary 1: Classic Mexico

This three-week tour focuses on the southern and central parts of the country, traditionally the most popular targets for independent travellers.

Soak up the museums, murals and markets of the nation’s crazy, high-octane capital, leaving a couple of days for Cholula and Teotihuacán.

Head to Mexico’s most enticing state, its capital the best place to sample mole, mescal and indigenous crafts.

• Zapotec and Mixtec heartland After the obligatory visit to Monte Albán, spend two to three days exploring the indigenous markets and lesser-known ruins around Oaxaca .

Heading east into Chiapas this colonial city is worth at least two days, plus a day or two to take in the remarkable Maya villages nearby.

Heading north, these are some of the grandest jungle-smothered Maya ruins in the country, all easily accessible.

From Palenque you can strike out into the Lacandón Maya heartland and these more isolated, romantic ruins.

Hit the Caribbean coast for the spectacular diving from this offshore island.

Back on the Yucatán mainland enjoy the balmy beaches and nightlife of the Riviera Maya.

End your trip by soaking up Mexico’s most magical Maya ruins followed by a dip in the cooling waters of a giant sinkhole.

Finding accommodation in Mexico is rarely difficult. In areas that are not overly touristy, the inexpensive places to stay are usually concentrated around the main plaza (the zócalo). Others tend to be near the market, train station or bus station. In bigger cities, you’ll find the cheaper accommodation clustered in a relatively small area. The more modern and expensive places often lie on the outskirts of towns, accessible only by car or taxi. The only times you’re likely to have problems finding somewhere to stay for your Mexico trip are in coastal resorts over the peak Christmas season, at Easter, on Mexican holidays and almost anywhere during a local fiesta, when it’s well worth trying to reserve ahead.

Food in Mexico bears very little resemblance to the concoctions served in “Mexican” restaurants in other parts of the world – you certainly won’t find chile con carne outside the tourist spots. Nor, as a rule, is it especially spicy. The basic Mexican diet is essentially one of corn (maíz as a crop, elote when eaten), supplemented by beans and chiles. These three things appear in an almost infinite variety of guises. Traditionally, lunch is the main meal of the day, taken around 2pm or later. Eating a large meal at lunch time is a money-saver – almost every restaurant serves a cut-price comida corrida (daily-changing set meal).

As delicious as most Mexican cuisine is, there are some slightly more unusual additions , like corn smut fungus, or huitlacoche (“sleeping excrement”). Yum!

A great deal of coffee is produced in Mexico, and you’ll be served superb coffee in the growing areas, especially Veracruz , as well as in the traditional coffeehouses in the capital. On any visit to Mexico, you have to try the country’s most famous spirit, tequila, distilled from the cactus-like agave plant in Jalisco and usually taken with lime and salt.

Visit Mexico and you’ll be rewarded with long-standing cultural traditions, such as the popular spectator sports of bullfighting and lucha libre (masked wrestling). For action, the pristine coastline offers sea-based adventures galore, from surfing on the Pacific coast to snorkelling and diving offshore islands.

Football and Baseball

Mexico’s chief spectator sport is soccer ( fútbol ). Mexican teams have not been notably successful on the international stage, but going to a game can still be a thrilling experience. The capital and Guadalajara are the best places to see a match. Baseball ( béisbol ) is also popular, as is American football (especially on TV). Jai alai (also known as frontón , or pelota vasca ) is Basque handball, common in big cities and played at a very high speed with a small hard ball and curved scoop attached to the hand; it’s a big gambling game.

Rodeos and bullfights

Mexican rodeos (charreadas), mainly seen in the north of the country, are as spectacular for their style and costume as they are for the events. Bullfights remain an obsession, with every city home to a bullring – Mexico City’s Plaza México is the world’s largest. The country’s toreros are said to be the world’s most reckless, much in demand in Spain.

Lucha libre

Masked wrestling (lucha libre) is very popular in Mexico, too. During this curious sport, the participants, Batman-like, are out of the game for good should their mask be removed and their secret identity revealed.

Originating in Mexico, mariachi bands comprise a mix of violinists, trumpeters and guitarists, headed up by a vocalist. You’ll find mariachi played the length and breadth of the country but most notably in Mexico City’s Plaza Garibaldi. Here, bands compete for your attention in a frenzy of music and singing.

Diving, snorkelling and surfing

Diving and snorkelling are big on the Caribbean coast, with world-famous dive sites at Cozumel and on the reefs further south. Over on the Pacific coast is something of a centre for surfing, despite few facilities as yet, though you can rent surfboards in major tourist centres such as Acapulco and Mazatlán . Nonetheless, plenty of Californian surfers follow the weather south over the winter, crowding the waves at Baja California, Oaxaca and Lázaro Cárdenas in Michoacán .

Despite soaring crime rates and dismal-sounding statistics, you are unlikely to run into trouble in Mexico if you stick to well-travelled paths. Even in Mexico City, which has a dangerous reputation , the threat is not that much greater than in many large North American and European cities. Obviously there are areas in cities where you wander alone, or at night, at your peril; the best precaution is common sense.

Some basic Mexico travel tips include avoid hailing a cab in the street in Mexico City (phone for a radio cab instead); don’t leave cash or cameras in hotel rooms (use the safe), and never leave valuables visible in your car. Drug offences are the most common cause of serious trouble between tourists and the authorities, and if you’re caught with quantities reckoned to be for distribution you can wave goodbye to daylight for a long time.

Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most EU countries do not need visas to enter Mexico as tourists for less than 180 days. Other Europeans can stay for ninety days. Non-US citizens travelling via the US, however, may need a US visa, even if they will only be in the country in transit. Citizens of the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and most Western European countries can enter under the Visa Waiver Program . South African citizens need to obtain a visa. The colour and bustle of Mexico’s markets is hard to beat. Even if you’ve no intention of buying, half an hour is always well spent meandering through narrow aisles surrounded by heaps of perfectly ripe fruit and stacks of nopal cactus leaves (though stay away from the meat sections if you’re at all squeamish). In small villages, like those around Oaxaca, inhabitants still recognize one day of the week as the traditional market day.

Towns of any size will have a market, usually daily, an important centre of local life and source of cheap eats (San Cristóbal de las Casas and Papantla are good examples), while in the cities, each barrio has its own vibrant mercado: among the best are Mexico City’s La Merced and the arts and crafts-oriented Ciudadela. Markets in San Miguel Allende are also better known for arts and crafts, as are Oaxaca’s city mercados . Toluca is the mother of them all, Mexico’s largest market held every Friday.

Notre itinéraire de 50 jours au mexique.

Enfin, ça y est ! Après de mutliples reports et un road trip en van de 5 mois, nous quittons finalement l'Europe. 

Notre 1ère destination ? Le Mexique. On vous avoue tout net : ce n'était pas du tout notre premier choix, on avait décidé de commencer par l'Asie et de finir par l'Amérique du sud, en ne remontant pas plus haut que la Colombie. 

On dira donc qu'il n'y a que les idiots qui ne changent pas d'avis et on se dit à nous-mêmes : "mais pourquoi on ne voulait pas aller au Mexique déjà ?" 

Je suppose que vous avez compris que le Mexique, on n'a pas juste aimé, on a adoré ! Il y a plein de choses à faire, à découvrir, et le pays est tellement vaste que l'on n'a jamais fini... 

Des cités Mayas aux plages paradisiaques en passant par les magnifiques parcs nationaux et réserves naturelles, nous n'avons cessé de nous étonner tout au long du voyage.

En 50 jours, nous avons parcouru 6 états, et plus de 4000 km à travers le pays. La destination

Situé dans la partie méridionale de l'Amérique du Nord,  le Mexique compte parmi les plus anciennes civilisations . C'est un beau mélange de culture qui s'ouvre à vous. Au delà de l'espagnol qui est la langue nationale du Mexique, ce sont  60 langues indigènes qui bercent le pays  avec en tête de liste le maya et le nahuati. Ce beau pays a le pouvoir de capter votre attention à différents niveaux :

Plus original, les hamacs, originaires du Yucatan, qui constituent des souvenirs typiques, qui vous replongeront en vacances une fois installés dans votre jardin.

Pour les fashionistas, craquez pour les Huipils, ces chemises brodées que portent les femmes amérindiennes. On trouve aussi dans tout le pays de splendides tissus et sacs colorés. Pour les accros aux bijoux, offrez-vous des parures faites d’ambre à un prix bien moins élevé qu’ailleurs. Les Mexicains représentent la mort à travers leur artisanat.

La Catrina, un squelette de femme habillé et paré soigneusement, constitue la figure traditionnelle de la Fête des Morts. Les gourmandes, ramenez du chocolat, sans oublier, les alcools typiques comme la tequila et le mezcal, plus fort et moins connu.

La cuisine locale

La tortilla : c'est la base de la cuisine mexicaine et elle accompagne la plupart des plats. Préparée avec des grains de maïs détrempés dans une mixture de chaux et d'eau. On lui donne la forme d'une galette.

Le taco : tortilla garnie de viande de bœuf, de porc, de poulet, de foie ou de cervelle.

L’enchilada : tortilla fourrée de viande ou de poulet, avec du fromage, mijotée dans une sauce au piment, avec de la tomate et des oignons.

La quesadilla : tortilla garnie au choix de fromage, viande, champignons, flor de calabaza (fleur de courgette), cervelle... Elle peut être frite dans l’huile ou cuite sur une plaque.

Le guacamole : purée froide d'avocat écrasé, additionnée d'oignons et de coriandre fraîche, relevée d'une pointe de piment, et arrosée d'un filet de citron vert.

Les gorditas : petites galettes épaisses, nature ou fourrées au fromage, à garnir de l'accompagnement de son choix.

Les burritos : de la viande, des haricots, des oignons, des épices, du piment et des légumes enroulés dans une tortilla de farine de blé.

Le Mexique est le paradis des fruits tropicaux : ananas, bananes, papaye, mangue, goyave...

La bière : presque une boisson nationale. Outre la Corona, on connaît la Sol, mais il existe des dizaines d'autres marques de bière mexicaine.

Les licuados sont des fruits mixés avec du lait, la version mexicaine du milk-shake.

La tequila : c'est LA boisson nationale. Il y a l'embarras du choix avec plus de 500 marques et autant de bouteilles.

Les coutumes

Petits groupes de musiciens mariant guitares, violons et trompettes, les mariachis sont omniprésents et les Mexicains en raffolent, dépensant des sommes considérables pour entendre quelques airs traditionnels. Les chansons des mariachis évoquent l’amour de la terre, du pays d’origine, de la ville natale, de la religion, de la nature, des compatriotes et de la force du pays.

- Les ferias ont lieu un peu partout dans le pays (Puebla, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí) et marquent en général la pleine saison d’un fruit (ananas, raisin, etc.). Elles donnent lieu à des concours de beauté, des corridas, des courses de chevaux, des combats de coqs. Ambiance populaire torride garantie.

- Héritage de la présence espagnole, la corrida, bien que moins populaire au Mexique que les combats de coqs, a ses adeptes.

Mexico possède la plus vaste plaza de toros au monde, avec 50 000 places.

- Les combats de coqs, encore un spectacle cruel que ces peleas de gallos, assez répandus dans les campagnes. Ils ont lieu dans des arènes spéciales (palenque)... Les paris montent à toute allure, les plumes volent, les propriétaires vocifèrent leurs encouragements...

- À l’origine en terre cuite, celles d’aujourd’hui sont le plus fréquemment en papier mâché et demeurent incontournables lors des fêtes. Les missionnaires espagnols introduisirent les piñatas pour convertir les Aztèques qui les adoptèrent rapidement, ces derniers ayant déjà un jeu assez proche. Il n’y avait plus qu’à donner un sens religieux à cette coutume ludique.

Les petits plus à savoir

Il est très vivement conseillé d’avertir votre banque avant votre départ (destination et dates). En effet votre carte peut être bloquée dès le premier retrait pour suspicion de fraude.

Avec votre CB vous pouvez retirer de l’argent facilement dans les banques, moyennant une commission variable suivant les banques. C'est souvent le plus simple.

Vous pouvez également changer des euros en arrivant à l’aéroport ou alors dans les « casas de cambio ».

Attention, au moment de changer de l’argent dans les maisons de change, vérifiez bien les opérations. Il existe des billets de 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, et 20 pesos.

Le Mexique connaît quelques problèmes d'insécurité. Certaines zones de pays sont ainsi formellement déconseillées. Effectivement, il est préférable de ne pas se rendre dans le Tamaulipas, Guerrero, le sud de Michoacan, Veracruz, Basse Californie di Nord, Chihuahua, ou encore Nuevo Leon.

Jour 2 - Mercredi 7 novembre : Cancun - Ek Balam - Valladolid

Après le petit déjeuner, vous rencontrez votre guide francophone et chauffeur.

Découvrez  Ek-Balam, un site archéologique maya  situé à 30 km au nord de la ville de Valladolid, à 2 kilomètres d'un village maya du même nom. En Yucatèque Ek' Balam signifie «Jaguar noir». Ce site est peu fréquenté par les touristes mais reste  un des plus beaux de la péninsule  car l'un des mieux conservé en raison de son histoire.

Déjeuner dans une communauté maya.

Vous vous rendrez ensuite au Cenote Xcanche. Après une vingtaine de minutes en VTT sur un joli petit chemin au milieu de la nature, vous découvrirez ce  superbe cenote.

Et pour celles à qui la baignade ne suffit pas, vous pourrez vous régaler avec des activités comme la tyrolienne et le rappel.

Vous rejoindrez finalement votre hôtel pour profiter de votre soirée libre.

Jour 3 - Jeudi 8 novembre : Valladolid - Rio Lagartos - Valladolid

Après votre petit déjeuner, direction la péninsule de Rio Lagartos, située à 100 Km au nord de Valladolid, pour une excursion en bateau !

Rio Lagartos est aussi un petit village de pêcheurs de 4 000 habitants situé sur les rives d’un immense bras de mer, à l’entrée de la réserve du  parc national Rio Lagartos  d’une superficie de 47 000 hectares. C’est un  vrai paradis pour les ornithologues en herbe , plus de 200 espèces d’oiseaux, cormorans, pélicans, ibis, échasses, hérons, ainsi que plusieurs sortes d’aigrettes. C’est également le lieu de refuge pour  une des colonies de flamants roses la plus importante du Mexique .

Vous naviguerez jusqu'à la saline, pour profiter d'un bain maya d'argile riche. Bon pour la peau, relaxant et... fun! Au retour, vous pourrez apercevoir des crocodiles.

Après votre déjeuner, vous découvrirez le  Cenote Dzitnup  ou Xkeken. Ce cenote fut découvert grâce à un porcelet (Xkekén en maya) qui s'était perdu et qu'on a retrouvé tout mouillé !

C'est l'une des rares formations dont la voûte soit a peu près intacte.  La lumière naturelle y pénètre, teintant de turquoise cette nappe profonde  et hospitalière où vous pourrez vous baigner sous d'énormes stalactites.

Retour à l'hôtel et fin de journée libre.

Jour 4 - Vendredi 9 novembre : Valladolid - Chichen Izta - Izamal - Merida

Vous avez bien dormi ? Tant mieux, parce que voici une grosse journée qui commence !

Vous prenez la direction de Chichen Itza, le plus impressionnant et le mieux préservé des sites du Yucatan.  Chichen Itza a été la plus grande capitale de la zone maya  entre 750 et 1200 après J.-C. Le site passionne par ses énigmes et ses mystères mais aussi par son fameux  Castillo (Temple de Kukulcan) dont vous aviez peut-être rêvé en lisant Tintin et les Picaros !

Vous ferez ensuite une escale rapide sur  Izamal, charmant village colonial construit à l'emplacement d'un grand centre religieux maya  hérissé de cinq pyramides. Le monastère est réputé pour son gigantesque atrium, bordé d'un passage couvert ajouté au 17e s., et dont la rayonnante couleur ocre-jaune a été adoptée par presque tout le village. La ville est encore aujourd'hui un important  centre de pèlerinage où l'on vient vénérer la Vierge d'Izamal  depuis l'époque coloniale.

Puis vous partez pour votre  cours de cuisine dans une hacienda . Vous participerez à un cours où vous apprendrez à préparer les spécialités de la région visitée.

Après avoir dégusté vos préparations, vous prenez la direction de  Mérida , capitale de l'État du Yucatan. Cette  « Ville blanche » , dégage un charme inoubliable. À la fois espagnole et indienne, elle compose une étrange  alchimie d'atmosphère provinciale et de vitalité cosmopolite , de langueur méridionale et d'élégance aristocratique. Les curiosités abondent, entre les musées et les théâtres, les hôtels particuliers du paseo Montejo, les édifices majestueux de la plaza Grande, les parcs ombragés d'amandiers et de lauriers, les boutiques d'artisanat et les terrasses sous les arcades, les soirées animées par les sérénades yucatèques et les concerts de salsa, de jazz et de rock.

Dans la soirée,  vous apprendrez à danser la salsa , et pourrez prolonger, si vous le souhaitez la nuit dans cette ville chaleureuse.

Jour 5 - Samedi 10 novembre : Merida - Uxaml

Après votre petit-déjeuner, direction la  coopérative Munha, véritable petit coin de paradis  au coeur du Yucatan.

Si vous aimez les environnements calmes, authentiques et hors des sentiers battus alors vous serez séduites par Munha Uxmal. Munha-Uxmal est né d'un projet de la coopérative Chac Lol (qui signifie fleur rouge en langue maya). Cette coopérative réunit une centaine d'associés, dont la plupart sont des agriculteurs et vivent dans les communautés proches du complexe. La coopérative souhaite, par le biais de ce projet touristique,  offrir de nouvelles opportunités de générer des ressources à la population locale  en créant des emplois et en faisant revivre certaines activités comme l'artisanat yucatèque. Leur but est aussi de permettre aux visiteurs de  s'imprégner de la culture Maya de la région dans un environnement harmonieux et traditionnel.

Déjeuner avec des femmes de la communauté.  L'occasion d'en apprendre d'avantage sur leur quotidien et leur cuisine traditionnelle.

Vous découvrirez ensuite  Uxmal . Ce fabuleux site, portant le nom de « trois fois construite », trouve son sens à la vue de la  pyramide du Devin plusieurs fois surélevée.  Les silhouettes de pierre apparaissent à l'horizon comme un mirage. Seuls les abords des monuments ont été dévêtus de l'inextricable  jungle sèche qui s'étend à perte de vue , attirant dans ce solarium écrasé de chaleur, une colonie d'iguanes impavides.

En fin d’après-midi, profitez d'un autre  rituel de beauté maya, le Temazcal, un bain de vapeur.

Jour 6 - Dimanche 11 novembre : Uxmal - Oxkutzcab - Bacalar

Petit déjeuner.

Commencez la journée par le marché de Oxkutzcab, un des marchés typiques les plus importants du Yucatan.

Note : Il est important d'arriver avant 11h 

Vous emprunterez ensuite  la route des couvents , un circuit qui vous mènera loin des grandes routes touristiques  au coeur de l'ambiance rurale maya .

Il est remarquable que, en dépit de tous les efforts d'évangélisation dont témoignent les anciens couvents et églises que l'on découvre le long de cette route, les villages demeurent nettement mayas, avec leurs huttes typiques et leurs femmes vêtues de chemises blanches brodées (huipiles).  Les traditions des ancêtres restent ici vivaces et le maya est toujours la langue que l'on parle sur les marchés.  Les couvents franciscains qui jalonnent cet itinéraire présentent une unité architecturale caractéristique des monastères du 16e s. Ces complexes n'étaient pas destinés uniquement à l'évangélisation, ils étaient construits aussi dans un but éducatif, et comme point de départ d'une structure urbaine.

Puis vous rejoindrez la  Lagune Bacalar . Le temps semble s'être arrêté à Bacalar,  village installé au bord de l'eau . Le regard ne se perd pas vers le grand large mais se régale des  tons changeants de vert et de bleu de la lagune , long serpent turquoise niché près de la baie de Chetumal.

Jour 7 - Lundi 12 novembre : Bacalar - Akumal 

Aujourd'hui vous partez pour  une excursion en bateau de 3h  durant laquelle vous allez connaître certains cenotes qui alimentent la lagune, un des 2 donne un accès à la mer qui s'appelle le canal des pirates et l'île aux oiseaux.  Vous nagerez dans plusieurs endroits paradisiaques !

Le bateau possède un toit pour se protéger du soleil et des coussins sur les bancs, une agua de fruta et des fruits vous seront proposés. Gilets de sauvetage et  masques avec tuba sont à votre disposition. Vous reviendrez de cette excursion le sourire aux lèvres et les yeux pleins de couleurs laguna Bacalar !

Vous partez ensuite  pour la visite de Tulum.  L'emplacement idyllique du site, se mirant  dans les eaux turquoise de la mer des Caraïbes,  justifie sa renommée grandissante. Les iguanes, sentinelles immobiles des cités du Yucatan, sont nombreux ! Tulum fut l'une des dernières cités mayas à disparaître, près de soixante-quinze ans après la conquête espagnole.

Jour 8 - Mardi 13 novembre : Akumal - Isla Mujeres

Ce matin, profitez d' Akumal plage, connue pour ses énormes tortues de mer  que l’on peut voir en toute saison et qui viennent brouter les herbes au fond de l’eau. Vous pouvez louer sur place masques, palmes et tubas (non inclus). Nagez  à peine 30 à 40 mètres de la côte  et vous pourrez observer les tortues à tout juste 2 mètres de profondeur. Les plus grosses font plus d’un mètre de long et pèsent jusqu’à 300kg.

Vous partirez ensuite en transfert privé vers Puerto Juarez puis en ferry pour Isla Mujeres. (vous aurez une assistance Française pour vous aider).

Une fois sur l'île, un taxi vous emmènera à votre hôtel, dont vous pourrez profiter librement.

Jour 9 - Mercredi 14 novembre : Isla Mujeres

Journée libre sur Isla Mujeres, l’ile des femmes.

Isla Mujeres est idéale pour le  farniente sur la plage, les sorties nocturnes, les balades ou la plongée libre . Le calme de cette île accueillante contraste avec la vie animée de Cancun.

En 1517, les Mayas l'utilisaient comme sanctuaire et lieu de production et d'exploitation du sel. L’île était dédiée à Ixchel, déesse de la Fertilité. Plages : playa Norte, playa Paraiso, playa Lancheros.

Jour 10 - Jeudi 15 novembre : Isla Mujeres - Cancun - Départ  

Le matin, vous prenez le taxi collectif pour rejoindre l'embarcadère, puis prenez ensuite le ferry pour Cancun. Un transfert vous emmène ensuite à l'aéroport en fonction de votre heure de vol.  Attention,prévoir des vols à partir de 14h.
