Did Bruce Lee Really Teach Chuck Norris Kung Fu?

Chuck norris' 10 best fight scenes, ranked, new 90% horror movie is the perfect blueprint for how to revitalize friday the 13th.

  • Chuck Norris excels in various martial arts styles and has created two of his own: American Tang Soo Do and Chun Kuk Do.
  • Norris' blend of martial arts training and acting talent made him a star in Hollywood, including his iconic role in Walker, Texas Ranger.
  • Known for his fight scenes in 1980s action movies, Norris has studied and mastered numerous martial arts styles to become a massive success.

Chuck Norris is experienced in many different fighting techniques and has used them throughout his career in martial arts and film. Norris' first major film role came at the invite of his friend and fellow martial artist Bruce Lee , who insisted that Norris play the villainous role of Colt in 1972's The Way of the Dragon . Norris and Bruce Lee's illegal showdown in the film became one of the most recognizable fights in cinematic history. Fom there, Norris, who was encouraged by his student at the time, Steve McQueen, started a storied journey in Hollywood action.

Norris is known for some of the best fight scenes in action movies in the 1980s, like Silent Rage , The Octagon , and The Delta Force , but his biggest claim to fame came from his role as Cordell Walker in Walker, Texas Ranger for 196 episodes. Norris' ability to expertly fuse his martial arts training with his acting is a rarity for American actors, and his knowledge of several styles has helped him become a massive success. However, there is one style Norris is more experienced in.

Is it true that Chuck Norris was one of Bruce Lee's students? Here's what's been said about the relationship between the two martial arts legends.

Chuck Norris Is Best Known For His Karate (But Uses Other Styles Too)

He is a black belt in brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, and tang soo do.

In the late '50s and throughout the 1960s, after a stint in the United States Air Force, Chuck Norris started deeply exploring the martial art of karate. He opened a martial arts studio and began training and competing in major karate tournaments. It wasn't until 1967 that he won the All-American Karate Championship , after beating seven opponents. He defended the title the next year and retired from the tournament, but that was also where he met Bruce Lee, who would become a new training partner.

Outside karate (both the ancient arts of Shitō-ryū and Shotokan) and Tang Soo Do, Norris is expertly practiced in the Korean arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido. He has also learned martial arts from other regions, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Filipino Arnis, and Judo. However, his knowledge of Japanese martial arts doesn't end with Judo, as he's also studied the full-contact art of Kyokushin, Gōjū-ryū, and Kenpo. He holds a Black Belt in Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Tang Soo Do is a hybrid version of karate that is fused with Korean martial arts.

Chuck Norris Created Two Fighting Styles Of His Own

Chuck norris system (chun kuk do) and american tang soo do.

Chuck Norris is also credited with founding his own two styles of martial arts, known as American Tang Soo Do and Chun Kuk Do (Chuck Norris System). American Tang Soo Do is a combination of five different martial arts styles, which include the Korean arts of traditional Tang Soo Do and Moo Duk Kwan-style, Judo, and the Shitō-ryū and Shotokan styles of Karate. According to American Tang Soo Do Association , Norris started the American Tang Soo Do system in 1973 , as well as the National Tang Soo Do Congress, which Norris would eventually branch off to the United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF).

With the evolution of Tang Soo Do and the addition of more martial arts styles, Norris would form Chun Kuk Do, now known as the Chuck Norris System. Norris created his own moral code of honor for the system, consisting of 10 rules for its members to follow. Norris' United Fighting Arts Federation continues to hold tournaments and training conferences in Las Vegas and has 90 schools worldwide, in several different countries. There are more than 4,000 active members of the UFAF.

At the age of 84, Chuck Norris has become one of the few actors who has left his imprint in multiple ways. The fights in Norris' movies and real life are legendary , and his personality and talents have had a lasting impression on pop culture. Chuck Norris ' contributions to martial arts with the systems he created and his memorable place in Hollywood have cemented him as an important figure in both areas forever.

The Journey to a BJJ Black Belt: Look Back to Move Forward

If you're just starting in BJJ and want to get a black belt someday, you're in for a long journey. Seasoned BJJ practioners share how to make the most of it.

Samuel Spiegelman

Written by Samuel Spiegelman Last updated on Nov 22, 2021

Students often think of Brazilian jiu jitsu as a journey that will one day take them to a black belt. If you are a new student or someone thinking about starting Brazilian jiu jitsu, realize you are going into this for the long haul if you want to reach your black belt . For most black belts, the journey does not stop the day they are promoted. In fact, a black belt is just beginning.

Recently I talked with with some of the students at New Breed Training Center after a class I was teaching. Upon hearing the questions and seeing the hunger for knowledge about Brazilian jiu jitsu, I couldn’t help but think about what it was like when I was the new student. I wondered what I would have done differently if I could go back.

“No matter how difficult the road may seem at times, follow the advice of others who have worn the path.”

However, I am just one tiny piece of the Brazilian jiu jitsu community. So I figured I’d ask those around me the same question: What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were a white belt? I asked a variety of Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners: black, brown, purple, and blue belts. My goal in this article is to take their advice and provide you with some helpful tips to set the foundation for a long, healthy Brazilian jiu jitsu journey.

1. Consistency and Mindset Are Key

There is a common saying in the Brazilian jiu jitsu world: “Leave your ego at the door.” But in order to leave your ego at the door, you need to actually show up. You won’t get good at Brazilian jiu jitsu unless you are consistent. You’re better off training two days a week for years than four days a week for a few months.

Brick Welch, Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt and instructor at Team Redzovic , shared a simple motto he uses to emphasize the importance of showing up. He always tells his white belt students, “Good things happen if you stick with jiu jitsu.”

Brick is not the only one who feels that way. Mike Cimmarusti, Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt and owner of Illinois Grappling Club , shared a similar thought process. Mike’s advice was to come to class ready to learn, not compete. The difference is the mindset. Both Mike and Brick agreed that you have to learn as much as possible. Brick suggested becoming a fan of the sport, and Mike suggested watching videos and learning from as many sources as you can.

2. Remember Jiu Jitsu Is a Team Sport

Brazilian jiu jitsu appears to be an individual sport, but it is best looked at as a team sport. Without training partners, you cannot get better.

“[G]etting better is not just about you. It’s about helping the people around you.”

Danny Midell is a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt and instructor at New Breed Training Center. He shared an important insight about the relationship between you and your team: getting better is not just about you. It’s about helping the people around you. His advice to new students was to be a good training partner.

3. Don’t Neglect Aspects of Your Game

When you first start training, there is a lot to take in. Often you will find yourself wondering why you are learning what you are being taught. That question is often asked when it comes to learning takedowns.

Mark Vives, head instructor and owner of New Breed Training Center, said looking back he would have spent more time learning takedowns – either judo or wrestling. Matches start on the feet, and it is easy to see how uncomfortable some competitors are in the stand-up game. Mark suggested to start learning takedowns early and learn how to combine different takedowns.

4. Train Smarter

Everyone who has trained Brazilian jiu jitsu for a long period of time has over-trained at some point. The longer you train, the harder you can push yourself, and that means you need more recovery time. Most people think the longer and harder you push yourself, the less recovery you need.

Mark Vives told me he wishes he would have learned about proper training and nutrition earlier in his BJJ career. This is an often-overlooked aspect of the game. In order to reach the level of black belt, you need to spend years on the mat. If you are new, spend some time learning how to train both on and off the mat.

Carlos Archila, a Brazilian jiu jitsu brown belt and owner of Lake County BJJ , talked about the importance of drilling and specific training. He explained that drilling sessions are perfect for the days you want to get some training in but your body is a little beat up. Training specific positions is another great option because it takes away some of the unknown variables. Pick a position, set some rules, and train. For example, you could practice a guard drill, where one person starts in closed guard and the other simply works to get out. This type of drilling is great for improving weak areas of your game.

new journey jiu jitsu reviews

A Different Perspective

The longer you train, the easier it is to lose sight of what it took to reach a high rank in Brazilian jiu jitsu . I asked a number of purple and blue belts of various ages the same question to see if there were any dramatic differences in answers. Surprisingly, there was barely any difference.

  • Mike Leighton, Brazilian jiu jitsu blue belt, suggested new students have an open mind. While your instructor may show you one way to do a technique, try to make it your own.
  • Marcelo Corpuz, a Brazilian jiu jitsu purple belt, said he would tell new students to focus on the fundamentals and work transitions when rolling, instead of holding a position for a long time.
  • Brian Pufundt , a Brazilian jiu jitsu blue belt, told new students strength does not matter. He advised them to focus on the technique and not to worry about your belt color.
  • Matt Leighton, Brazilian jiu jitsu purple belt, told new students to stay on the mat. “Focus on building up mat time in the beginning and everything will come in time.”

The Brazilian jiu jitsu journey is long and filled with peaks and valleys. No matter how difficult the road may seem at times, follow the advice of others who have worn the path.  Be consistent, train smart, don’t neglect parts of your game, and you will be just fine.

Xmartial: More Than a Brand, a Movement in Motion

X martial was born from one man's burning passion for martial arts and his desire to make a mark in the combat sports world. Yosef Mogh realized early on that he wouldn’t be an elite-level competitor, but that didn’t stop him from making a name in the industry.

Think of XMartial as a blend of style and substance. There was a gap in the market for No-Gi Jiu Jitsu gear with real flair and flashiness. Jiu Jitsu competitors and hobbyists alike have a great sense of humor, and creating a line of gear that catered to their playful side set XMartial apart from the competition. XMartial always approached business from a customer's perspective, constantly improving products based on feedback, always going the extra mile to ensure satisfaction. The online reviews are a testament to that hard work.

Three years in, XMartial is one of the biggest names in the sport of Jiu Jitsu and is making waves in Muay Thai. The massive and rapid growth of the company is unprecedented in the martial arts clothing space, but Yosef’s intense work ethic made it happen. In 2023, XMartial became community-obsessed, giving back to the community that helped build the brand. XMartial gave away over $50,000 in free gear to talented up-and-coming athletes, seasoned individuals, and underprivileged kids who needed a little help on their martial arts journey. XMartial also sponsored over 300 athletes of all levels to provide extra support.

2023 was also the year that the core XMartial team hit the road, embarking on their US tour, documented in the popular YouTube series ‘ The Dojo Roadshow ’ The plan was to visit a few gyms and shake a few hands, but on the very first day, the team found themselves sitting down to dinner with the Godfather of No-Gi, Eddie Bravo . At that point, they knew the tour had to be ramped up. The XMartial RV was soon added to the mix, and the team spent the better part of six months living on the road, in an RV plastered with graffiti, courtesy of Fedor Nikolov, one of Jiu Jitsu's top up-and-coming talents and a street artist. The tour was wild, with the XMartial team randomly showing up at gyms to throw down challenges, giving away lots of gear, and adding new athletes to the roster. The team also hit up competitions and events, always dripping in style.

The Dojo Roadshow started at 10th Planet HQ, Eddie Bravo’s gym, for the qualifier event for the PGF, the Professional Grappling Federation Season Five, which took place later in 2023 in Decatur, Alabama. XMartial was in attendance, helping out as one of the event sponsors. At that point, the PGF was not a well-known event, but that changed when Zoltan Bathory from Five Finger Death Punch got involved. After meeting the creators of the PGF, Brandon McCaghren, and Keelan Lawyer, they set about making the competition one of the biggest in the Jiu Jitsu calendar.

It was poetic that the XMartial tour, The Dojo Roadshow, would conclude at the PGF Season 6 in Las Vegas in April 2024, six months after that first PGF qualifier for Season 5. XMartial had invested in having a team at the Season 6 event, and it was a star-studded occasion, with Jiu Jitsu royalty like Eddie Bravo , Roger Gracie , Jean Jacques Machado , and Dean Lister in attendance. But it was the presence of stars from outside the Jiu Jitsu world, like Ali Abdulaziz, Russell Peters, and Paulo Costa, that demonstrated how big the sport was getting.

Team XMartial emphatically won the PGF, beating Team First Form, Black Rifle Coffee, and Team Epic Roll. Leading the scoreboard from the first day till the last, Team XMartial took home the grand prize of $100,000, giving each of the five athletes on the team a $20,000 payday—big money indeed for a Jiu Jitsu tournament.

On the horizon is the ADCC World Championships in August, and XMartial will have plenty of representation at the event. This year will also mark the inaugural Youth Championships at the ADCC, with so many talented youngsters in the sport, they had to open up the competition to the kids. Be on the lookout for some of the best young talent in the world— JP Tran ( ADCC Open Champ, IBJJF Pan Kids Champ ), Herra Rose , Sofina Grajo ( ADCC Opens champ, IBJJF Con Kids Champ, Pan Kids Champ ), Joselyn Molina , Cam Thompson , and Mila Martorano —all superstars of the sport and sponsored by XMartial, aiming to take home gold.

If you live anywhere near Thousand Oaks, you've just been gifted one of the most talented jiu jitsu instructors of all time. Professor Eric Ramey puts the science in the sport with a mastery I have yet to see rivaled in the 10 years of my doing this martial art. "Attention to detail" would be putting his teaching style lightly: you come away with not only a full understanding of a skill, but also, the most important part, the why of doing the technique. It changes how you look at everything we do on the mats to a degree where you change your own game because of the understanding of the skill. You progress faster than anywhere else because the systems of offense are defense are intertwined at the highest levels of the sport. The gym is an a state of the art facility, with spring flooring under the mats so you can practice repetitions safely. There are showers so you can be clean and good to go after class. The gym is conveniently located in a shopping plaza with plenty of parking. If you are at all curious, go in a for a free trial and see why 10th Planet Thousand Oaks is the top school in the area!

Dropped in yesterday to take a class and Coach Eric is top notch! His ability to explain the concepts, simplify the techniques and provide real world application is like no other. Thank you Coach Eric for your hospitality. Hands down the best no gi experience I've ever had!

Great new gym for all types of practitioners. Spring floor mats with plenty of space to practice takedowns. There's a caged wall for mma athletes, and multiple showers for your after training needs. Eric Ramey's system promotes solid defense leading to offense. Fundamentals class usually involves defensive mechanics and positional sparing while the Advance class deals with offensive tactics with about an hour of live sparring. Gym instructors and members are very friendly and give detailed feedback. Good place to learn for all ages!

Awesome instructors great vibe. Eric Ramey is a wealth of knowledge and his philosophy for the sport is open to all applications of the techniques. Whether that's sport, self defense, MMA etc. All of the instructors have a passion for the sport and are very welcoming to new students. Couldn't recommend this gym enough.

Most fights end up on the ground or in the clinching position and knowing what to do could win a fight - or even more - save your life.

Using leverage and proper technique, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can negate size and power with the use of joint-locks, choke holds and superior positioning, making it one of the most effective forms of self-protection in the martial arts industry. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or an experienced Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program right here in Carrollton offers a class for you.

Adult Sport Competition Training

new journey jiu jitsu reviews

Competition classes are designed to give our competitors more conditioning and training that is needed to compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This class will be different from our adults' all-levels focusing more on drills, position training, live matches, endurance and advanced technical positions.

new journey jiu jitsu reviews

Our competitor's class is open to all skill levels. You do not need to be a competitor to participate in competition class. If you want to compete, this class is for you! Although it focuses on competition, it is great for endurance training as well. We have ranks ranging from white to black to help grow your jiu-jitsu game.

Adult No-Gi

new journey jiu jitsu reviews

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we train in Gi’s (Kimono’s). These classes will focus on ground control without grips. No grips make it difficult to stall or grapple an opponent. In real life situations, you won’t always have clothing to use, this is where no-gi grappling is helpful. No grips promote better escapes and produce more controlled positioning. Training No-Gi will accentuate the need to tighten up your movement and positions creating an opportunity to learn and grow. There is less room for error in No-Gi grappling. This puts pressure on athletes for body awareness and to fix mistakes.

On top of a great workout and world-class self-defense, students at Journey BJJ will enjoy dozens of other benefits as well. When you train with us here in Carrollton, you'll master our unique style of Jiu Jitsu with techniques including grappling, ground fighting and submission holds!

  • This great workout will tone your muscles and burn fat
  • You'll build confidence and discipline as you learn self-defense and effective MMA techniques
  • You'll enjoy newfound energy that will keep you focused at work, at home and in the gym
  • You'll be better equipped to deal with normal stresses
