What people love about Rio De Janeiro Tours

Luma was amazing. The trip was basic, but she made the trip
Guillame and Talus were both both excellent guides, professional, friendly, knowledgeable and open to exchanging stories. Both have good English with Talus's being excellent. The refugios leave something to be desired. The buildings are kept basically clean but are damp. The mattresses were saggy and I suspect the bites we had were bed bugs. We realise, that this is not something that Nattrip is directly responsible for but perhaps sleeping maps would be better and the mattresses removed. The walk was wonderful none the less due to the spectacular environment and guides and is recommended to those happy to have a little discomfort to experience this wonderful landscape.
Sooo nice to not have to worry about booking transfers and hostels myself and just check the app for pickup times! (Just be patient with that, as they're rarely on time, in normal true Brazilian style.) Breakfast wasn't booked on my second hostel, but I let Bamba know through the Trip Plans app and they fixed it. Also, my boat tour was cancelled on Ilha Grande due to the weather but replaced with another one, which I enjoyed anyway, so all good. In Paraty, you must pick up your boat tour ticket at the tour office in town, do that the day you arrive! I didn't think the shuttle transport times were too bad (like the other review says), it's nice to just sit back and relax sometimes. Enjoy!

The 5 best day trips from Rio de Janeiro

Ruth Ellen Davis

Sep 30, 2023 • 5 min read

The undulating landscape that surrounds Rio de Janeiro is studded with wilderness-backed beaches, ancient sites and fascinating smaller-scale urban hubs.

But the fact of the matter is that public transport outside the city lacks efficiency. Trips to destinations that, on paper, appear potentially close – such as the cobbled streets of Paraty or the island charms of Ilha Grande – could well take most of the day, realistically requiring at least a night’s stopover.

With that in mind, here are five amazing day trips from Rio de Janeiro – three doable using public transport, plus two for those with their own set of wheels.

1. Head to Ilha de Paquetá for an island escape

Travel time: 1 hour 10 minutes

As you stroll the sandy simplicity of peaceful Ilha de Paquetá , it can be difficult to believe that a mere hour or so ago you were in central Rio.

This small island of fruit trees, pastel-hued buildings and golden sand is just an hour-long ferry ride from Praça XV in the city center. The island is gloriously car-free, and the most popular way to get around is by bicycle. Rent one from the main street in front of the ferry terminal.

A short cycle from the ferry is Parque de Darke de Mattos, a leafy public park with trails leading to viewpoints such as Mirante Boa Vista, from which you can look back to Sugarloaf Mountain. One Sunday a month, the streets erupt with samba, and the rhythmic festivities continue well into the night.

How to get to Ilha de Paquetá from Rio de Janeiro:  Ferries leave every 90 minutes from Praça XV (Quinze) de Novembro in Centro, starting around 7am.

2. Catch a wave at Prainha

Travel time: 1 hour

West of Rio, the unfurling shoreline becomes wilder and increasingly more secluded. Those with time on their hands have endless swathes of rustic coast to explore, but if you’re looking to step out of Rio for a quick slice of tropical beach life, Prainha  is one of the more accessible beach options.

Lush ascending greenery hugs this wedge of white sand, and its dramatic backdrop is matched by some seriously powerful waves. Prainha is a regular hangout for Rio’s more experienced surfers, and its beauty is no secret – weekends and holidays see the cove fill with Rio residents taking a break from the city.

Large rock formations and strong currents mean that only the most confident swimmers venture out of their depths; the beach has no lifeguards. A scattering of rustic eateries provide simple refreshments.

How to get to Prainha from Rio de Janeiro: Catch the orange “surf bus” that passes through Copacabana and Ipanema or take a taxi. The beach is also accessible by bicycle.

3. Eat fresh seafood in Niterói

Travel time: 10 minutes

An 14km (8.7-mile) bridge connects Rio with its little sister city of Niterói, and it takes just 10 minutes by bus or 20 minutes by ferry to get there, making it an easy day trip.

Locally renowned fish market Mercado Sao Pedro on Av Visconde do Rio Branco sits a few blocks from the ferry dock and is frequented by many of Rio’s top chefs sourcing their menus. Upstairs, several small restaurants serve affordable seafood. For an agreed price, chefs here will also prepare fish you’ve purchased in the market.

Renting a bike is a pleasant option in Niterói, and a 15-minute cycle from the market is the futuristic-looking  Museu de Arte Contemporânea . Famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer designed this looming flying saucer of a museum. The contemporary exhibits can be interesting, but go for the sweeping architecture and panoramic views of Guanabara Bay.

How to get to Niterói from Rio de Janeiro:  Take a bus from Novo Rio Bus Terminal (Av Francisco Bicalho). Boats leave from the Praça XV ferry terminal.

People walk around Praca da Liberdade Square in Petrópolis, Brazil

4. Explore Brazilian history in Petrópolis

A little more than an hour’s drive north of Rio, at a cooling elevation of 2749ft, sits the city of Petrópolis . Known as the Imperial City, Petrópolis is a stately reminder of Brazil’s days of empire. Created under the instruction of Emperor Dom Pedro II and designed by German engineer Júlio Frederico Koeler, the city was initially populated by German immigrants.

Don Pedro’s chunky pink-and-white palace is now home to the Museu Imperial , where a collection of objects from his rule is on display. To see contrasting architecture from the same time period, take a turn around the glass and iron Palácio de Cristal .

Down the road is Brazil’s oldest brewery,  Cervejaria Bohemia . Swing by for a brewery tour and a swig, plus a limonada for the designated driver.

How to get to Petrópolis from Rio de Janeiro:  Take Elevado Professor Engenheiro Rufino de Almeida Pizarro in São Cristóvão from Av Pres. Vargas and follow the expressway Via Expressa Pres. João Goulart/Linha Vermelha and BR-040 to Av Ayrton Senna to Petrópolis.

A surfer cuts through a frothy wave in Cabo Frio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazi

5. Find your perfect beach in Cabo Frio

Travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes

About 150km (93 miles) east of Rio de Janeiro is the small coastal city of Cabo Frio. The intricately weaving shoreline means stunning beaches are in plentiful supply, and each has its own personality. Favorites include Praia do Forte and Praia das Conchas for their bright blonde sands and smooth turquoise waters.

Fans of surfing and other water sports flock to Praia do Peró and Praia das Dunas.

A short boat trip away is Ilha do Japonês (Japanese Island), where paddleboarders and kayakers glide over shoals of colorful fish.

For an extended road trip with a hefty dollop of glitz, drive for less than an hour further up the coast to the resort of Búzios . This idyllic fishing village has been liberally injected with cosmopolitan chic. Stop for swanky cocktails and sunset dining.

How to get to Cabo Frio from Rio de Janeiro:  Take Via Elevado da Perimetral in Caju from Túnel Rio 450 Anos and Via Binário do Porto. Follow BR-101, Via Lagos and RJ-140 to Rua Alex Novelino in Ville Blanche, Cabo Frio. Continue straight onto Rua Alex Novelino.

The marvelous city of Rio is located on the South Atlantic coast and is the second largest city in Brazil with several districts. Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1565 by Portuguese colonialists. This captivating city is famous for its laidback beach culture, its breathtaking landscapes, the mixed architecture, villages that have been transformed into hip towns, and most of all, its annual carnival. It is one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere.

Parts of Rio have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their spectacular beauty. There are so many places to explore on a day trip, to experience the incredible city and its neighboring areas. Here is our list of the 15 best day trips from Rio:

The gigantic statue of Jesus Christ was designed by Paul Landowski, a Polish-French sculptor, and constructed by engineers Heitor da Silva Costa and Albert Caquot. The construction of this symbol of Christianity is famous across the world was almost entirely financed by the Brazilian Catholics.

The open-armed statue is strategically situated at the top of the Corcovado Mountain which is found in the Tijuca Forest. The mountain is 700m high and for this reason, the statue is visible from almost every corner of the city.

The park protects the Tijuca forest which was the first replanted forest in the world, starting in the 1850s after the land was almost destroyed completely by coffee farmers. It also protects a couple of waterfalls and a multitude of trails as well as the historical ruins of the coffee age.

Tijuca National Park is home to the Christ the Redeemer statue which stands on Corcovado. The park also has several viewpoints that overlook the city. For this reason, the Tijuca National Park is a popular tourist destination.

Sugarloaf got its name from its conical shape. It’s perched on a point on the shore that extends out into the ocean and surrounds the harbor. Sugarloaf is connected to Rio by a low-lying strip of land.

Recommended tour : Sugar Loaf Mountain Half Day Morning Tour

Paraty, Brazil

At the back of the city is the Bocaino Mountains, which are not only delightful to the eyes but also provide the perfect natural setting to explore the jungle.

Paraty is slightly further away (a 4-hour drive) from Rio compared to other day trip destinations, but you will fall in love with this beautiful city and its cobbled streets.

If you have extra time, make a stop by the sugarcane plantations.

11. Maracana

Maracana Stadium

Any avid football fan must visit Brazil’s largest stadium which can accommodate more than 78,838 spectators. The stadium is used to hold matches as well as concerts.

The Maracana stadium is named after the River Maracana. The stadium includes an arena called the Maracanazinho which translates to “The Little Maracana.”

Baruch, Lloa Lloa and Cerro Campanaro......... maybe you can explain what you mean by that?

' class=

Also, you have all the lake excursions that are really nice (also the most expensive)

You should look into spend some $$$ if you plan on staying at the Llao Llao Hotel.

Sorry, I was using talk to text and those were misspellings

A cheaper option would be La Deseada, Charming Lodge and Spa (the Stag restaurant, perched on the lake shore is phenomenal) or any other place in that area. And you're on the main road, and close to some of the chairlifts. Consider Cero Campanario, Cero Otto, Cero Catedral [4 hrs to Refugio Frey and back, via Punta Princesa], or Piedra de Habsburgo in terms of short hikes.

I can't opine on the Siete Lagos drive, but instead of a long drive, maybe do just a portion of it and spend some time in Parque National Nahuel Huapi (I heard great things!)

Quick trip report of our New Year's stay in Bariloche (extremely short, but might give you a chance to inform your itinerary)

'freaked out' jason day admits olympic games regret as paris offers redemption.

Damien McCartney

Aussie golfer Jason Day has admitted regret over not taking his spot in the Australian Olympic team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Day – who was world No.1 at the time – opted out of travelling to the Rio games amid concerns over the Zika virus.

But he was far from alone. Six of the top-10 ranked players in the world – Dustin Johnson (2), Jordan Spieth (3), Rory McIlroy (4), Adam Scott (8), and Branden Grace (10) – all opted to skip golf's first Olympics appearance in a century for the same reason.

"Looking back on it, I wish I would've gone to Rio," Day told media ahead of this weekend's Byron Nelson, where he will enter as defending champion.

"I had one of those spots, and at the time we were having kids, and then obviously there was that (Zika) scare, so I was kind of like a little bit freaked out about that."

Zika virus can cause birth defects if a woman is infected during pregnancy. While usually transmitted through mosquitoes, it can also be sexually transmitted.

"I wish I would've gone, but if I get the opportunity to go and represent the country, my country, Australia and get to go to Paris, that would be an absolute blast, an honour to do that," Day said.

"To be able to call yourself an Olympian would be even better. If I get the opportunity I'm 100 per cent going."

With Day and Scott both out, Marcus Fraser and Scott Hend were Australia's representatives in Rio. Fraser finished in a tie for fifth, and Hend a tie for 39th.

A drop in form and a back injury kept Day out of contention for selection in Tokyo, where Australia was represented by Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman, who have both since moved to LIV Golf.

A lack of rankings points on the LIV tour has seen Smith – arguably still Australia's best golfer – drop to 55th in the official rankings.

Although calls are growing louder for the Olympics eligibility criteria to change, world rankings position remains the sole qualifier. The cut-off for Paris is June 17 for men – the day after the US Open – and June 24 for women.

Day is Australia's highest-ranked player in 22nd, with Min Woo Lee ten spaces below him. Adam Scott is also above Smith in 52nd, but has indicated he won't go to Paris if chosen.

To make it even harder for Smith, Ryan Davis lies only three spots beneath him in the rankings, and can play in PGA Tour events every week until the cut-off should he wish to.

But Smith still has two majors – the PGA Championship at Valhalla in a fortnight and the US Open at Pinehurst from June 13-16 to potentially vault back into contention.

The Byron Nelson will get underway on Friday morning (AEST), although a poor weather forecast is threatening the event.
