The Srikhand Mahadev trek is classified as a trek of  moderate difficulty .

Cardiovascular endurance

For two days, you will cover a distance of 26 km and you will be trekking up to an altitude of 16930 feet. The secret to covering this distance comfortably lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can  begin by jogging every day . Ideally, you should be able to  jog 4 km in 20 minutes  before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace every day. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too.

This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around  3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set . Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your workout.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises - stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek.

Working out indoors

Alternative Treks by Indiahikes

Shrikhand Mahadev is, of course, a great trek. But more than that, it is a  yatra –  a pilgrimage. Therefore, during September, the trail is full of devotees making their visit to the holy peak. And therefore, somewhere along the trail, the feeling of being on a trek gets lost.

It’s not an out-and-out trek, and you’ll miss the wilderness and the solitude that you seek while on a trek. And you’ll also miss the camaraderie of fellow trekkers.

Therefore, if that is what you’re looking for we have an alternative trek for you.

Bali Pass -Ruinsara Tal

There aren’t many treks that let one experience the raw grandeur of a Himalayan pass crossing. Connecting Har Ki Dun valley with Yamunotri, the Bali Pass is an exhilarating trail. It traverses the confluence of Tons and Ruinsara rivers, the undisturbed serenity of the Ruinsara Valley and the lush meadows of Devsu Thach.

At 16,207 ft, the Bali Pass offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Bandarpoonch, Kalanag and Swargarohini peaks. This reward doesn’t come easy, as this trek is a difficult one, not suitable for beginners.

Shrikhand Mahadev

The trek can be undertaken by two different routes, one beginning from Nirmand and the other from Arsu. The most popular and well-travelled is the Nirmand-Jaon village option. To reach the base camp, you would have to drive from Shimla to Rampur, crossing the Satluj river and continuing until Jaon Village. This trek can be completed within a span of 5-6 days, including three days of trekking and the full Delhi-to-Delhi journey.

Fascinating Facts about Trekking

Singhgad or Jaon Village can be used as the  base camp .

Brief Travel Plan For Shrikhand Mahadev Trek

Beginning in Jaun, a village in the Kullu district that stands at 6,397 feet, the trek to Holy Shrikhand Mahadev commences. This small settlement is situated along the right bank of Kurpan River, which springs from the base of the Shrikhand Mountain Range. Kurpan is a swift-flowing stream with sparkling water, and in the monsoon it appears to be a wild and dangerous river.

Located in the Himalayan range , Jaun is a small village of about 50 houses and a temple dedicated to Mata Katyayni. The area is approachable from Baagi Pul via a Kuccha road of 8 Kms. The village is surrounded by the picturesque views of mountains, streams, homes and temples, as well as the luscious apple orchards. On a clear day, visitors can also get a glimpse of the holy Shrikhand peak from Jaun. Additionally, it’s the last place to buy some basic necessities for the trek.

You will find the locals of Jaun smiling innocently, welcoming visitors with open arms. Inhabitants of this region are known for their hospitality. To get to know more about the surrounding area, spend time with the locals and learn about the Shrikhand Yatra and how it has become a source of income for the people here.

Heading to Singhgad from Jaon is an undertaking that many take on. The journey often involves making a trek through the hills and valleys of the region. It can be an exciting adventure that many find enjoyable and worthwhile.

Singhgad, located at 6,873 ft., is a 3 km trek away from Jaon. Along the right bank of Kurpan, you will pass through several apple orchards, streamlets, and a village with traditional homes, most of which have two stories. It takes approximately 1 hour to reach Singhgad, as it is a paved path beside the river.

Singhgad is an ideal spot to rest or stay for a while. The location is a holy site and visitors often come to perform rituals during their pilgrimage. Visitors can also visit the temples located here. The area is characterized by its verdant forests and Deodar trees. This is what makes the area renowned for its thick woodlands.

A view of Kurpan along the journey to Barathi Nala -Day 1

From Singhgad to Thachru – that’s the route one would take.

The next stage of the journey leads to Barathi Nalah, a peak standing at 7,283 ft. This trek of 3 km can be completed within 1.5 hours, and the views along the way are stunning. Part of it involves crossing a wooden bridge made of a Deodar tree, providing an exciting and thrilling experience that brings the adventurers close to nature.

At Barathi Nalah you can take a break before the 6 Km vertical climb of Danda Dhaar up to Thachru. This trek can take up to 6-8 hours and demands a great deal of stamina. You can make rest stops along the route, which passes through the dark deodar forests, where it is impossible to discern anything due to the thickness of the trees. You can however make out the sound of rivers, streams and waterfalls quite clearly. As there is no access to water on the way to Thachru, it is essential to carry enough water to last the journey.

Heading to Taacharu

When you are hiking up the hillside, you can observe the varying vegetation and from numerous vistas, the Kullu Himalayas can be viewed. Along the journey, one can come across some large Deodar trees which are many years old. Spectacular birds can be seen on the way to Thachru. Additionally, there are some rocky areas where one can appreciate the scenery of the thick woods and small streams near Danda Dhaar and its surrounding areas.

At an altitude of 11,318 ft, Thachru is the endpoint of the tree line. Herbs and shrubs are the only vegetation in this area. In the evening, the views of the Sarahan and Kotgarh region to the South, Shrikhand peak to the East, and Kullu Himalaya to the West are breathtaking. It is also the ideal spot to spend the night after a 6-8 km climb, as the trek from there to Parvati Baag is gentle and less demanding.

The sacred Thachru, the sacred Kaali Ghat, and the holy Kunsha

A 3 km straight climb from Taacharu to Kaali Ghat takes around 1.5 hours. On the trek, one can come across some of the rare Himalayan flowers. The path is north-facing and has a deep ditch on one side. After an hour of trekking, an open space full of big rocks appears. This area offers a clear view of the surrounding mountains and one can reach Kaali Ghat in the next 15 minutes. It is situated at 12,778 ft and is the top of Danda Dhaar. The vertical ascent that started at Barathi Nala culminates at Kaali Ghat; giving a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas.

The picture illustrated below offers a view of the mountain ranges from Kali Ghati.

A view of the ranges from Kali Ghati

At Kaal Ghati , there is a temple devoted to the Goddess Kali that marks the beginning of the next journey. This trek is a gentle one and will take only half an hour to complete the 1.5 km distance to Bhim Talai. This spot is said to be where one of the Pandava brothers, Bhim, once took his bath. It is situated 11,279 ft. above sea level and is encompassed by tall mountains, grasslands, and little cascades. Shepherds can also be found in this area.

The trek from Bhim Talai to Kunsha, which is a distance of three kilometres, can be completed in 1.5 hours. After traversing a large grassland, the path passes through a glacier that is 500 metres in length and 80 metres in width. Following this, there is a vertical climb through rocky terrain to Kunsha, which stands at 12,746 feet. This spot is surrounded by large waterfalls and stunning natural beauty. Here, one can spend many hours admiring the gorgeous waterfalls, clouds and flowers. It is an ideal place to relax and be re-energized by the surrounding nature.

Beginning at Kunsha and extending to Bheem Dwar, there is a flat track with some slight hills. This 3 kilometer stretch takes an estimated two hours to traverse. The trail is dotted with rare Himalayan blooms and numerous shrubs. This location is similar to the Valley of Flowers in Uttrakhand, with a plethora of unique flowers easily visible. The area is expansive, affording a stunning view of valleys, ravines, towering waterfalls, and many small rivulets. Kunsha valley enchants with its captivating sights, from the clouds, mountains, and snow patches to the pleasant sound of cascading streams. It is a picturesque dreamscape.

After your two-hour journey in the meadow of nature, you come across Bheem Dwar, which is situated at an altitude of 12175 feet. As per the stories, it is believed that during the Pandavas’ exile, they stayed here. Nowadays, this place is referred to as Bheem Dwar and it is a large Bugyal encompassed by a multitude of waterways and glaciers. While en route to Parvati Baag, you have to traverse the largest waterfall of the trek.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra, held each July, has its starting point at Bheem Dwar. Shepherds often take their sheep and goats to graze in the area. There are caves here that provide shelter to pilgrims who need to rest. The stunning beauty of the area has a captivating effect, easily drawing people in and making them want to linger and take in the natural wonders.

This picture shows the peaks that can be seen from Bheem Dwar.

Located at 13,622 ft, Parvati Baag is just a 3 Km trek from Bheem Dwar and the journey to get there takes around 2 hours. The hike up until the large waterfall is mild, but after crossing it there is a steep 2.5 Km climb to Parvati Baag. It has gained its name due to the legends of Mata Parvati staying in this area. It is a stunning location, abundant with rare flowers from the Himalayas and is particularly renowned for the Brahma Kamal, a flower which can be easily found here. Parvati Baag is situated just beneath the Shrikhand Mountain, and it is said that at night it is possible to touch the sky with your hand.

A journey from Parvati Baag to Nain Sarovar and back can be made. This route can be traveled, with the end point being where it began.

At dawn you must set out heading to the Holy Shrikhand Peak. The last place to find vegetation, such as grass, shrubs and herbs is at Parvati Baag. Moving beyond this location, your path is only moraines and snow. Shrikhand Peak is a mere 6 Km away from Parvati Baag. As you journey to Shrikhand, you will pass through glaciers, streams and stone tunnels.

Heading to Shrikhand Mahadev?

The initial section of the journey to Nain Sarovar Lake is mostly composed of snow and rocks. This lake at 14,527 ft is encompassed by a region of about two football fields and it takes 1.5 hours to get to it. The complete trek to Shrikhand Mahadev is connected with Lord Shiva and Nain Sarovar Lake; it is said that it was formed by the tears of Maa Parvati when she was venerating Lord Shiva.

Maa Parvati is venerated at Nain Sarovar Lake, which is a place of worship. After taking some time to get used to the atmosphere, visitors should return to Parvati Baag.

The picture shows Nain Sarover alongside the paths that lead to Srikhand

Backtrack to Nain Sarovar. The climb to Shrikhand is very abrupt and steep from this spot. The initial section of this hike from Nain Sarovar is a glacier of 200 meters. It takes around 45 minutes just to finish this 0.5 kilometer section. It takes a lot of stamina to accomplish this part. Once 45 minutes are spent, you arrive at the peak of a cliff at 14,967 ft. From this point, you can clearly observe the magnificence of Nain Sarovar Lake. Towards Shrikhand, large rocks and glaciers can be seen. If you reach early in the morning, the beauty of Kinnaur Mountains can be viewed from here.

A glimpse of the intertwining mountain ridges can be seen from Shrikhand Mahadev, as presented in the image above. The photo showcases the connected ranges located at this location.

Once you progress further in the hike, you will see snow and moraines in most places. Seven peaks have to be conquered in order to reach the peak of Shrikhand. As the sun rises, you will feel as if you are above the clouds. While making your way to Bheem Bailee, you will cross several glaciers and tunnels made of stones. Bheem Bailee is a holy area dedicated to Bheem, located at an elevation of 15921 ft.

At this place, various marks have been found on stones. Legends speak of Bheem constructing a stairway to Heaven, which was not completed due to the lack of time. By looking at the stones piled on top of each other, one can imagine the stairway. From Bheem Baiee, the holy Shrikhand Shila can be seen. It requires a half hour to reach Shrikhand and one has to go across a vast glacier in order to get there.

At an altitude of 17,150 ft, Shrikhand provides a spectacular view of the Himalayan Mountains from three directions and a captivating sight of Rampur Sarahan and the Shimla hills from the fourth side. Everywhere you go, you can bask in the aroma of nature.

From the summit of Shrikhand Mahadev, an impressive vista can be seen.

From this spot, one can have a view of the Kinnaur Himalaya to one side and the Kullu and Shimla mountains to the other. It is a place where all devotees believe that Lord Shiva is omnipresent.

Best time to do Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash Yatra:

When it comes to the best weather for the Shrikhand Mahadev trek, then we can say that the spring season is during the month of summer which is from June to September. It is generally considered one of the best seasons to do the trek because the weather conditions are good with clear sky. However, you may find some places a bit crowded.

Also, September to November is another time that is considered one of the best times to do the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek. The view and the weather are amazing with so little crowd which will give to some of the experience of life.

It is recommended that you do not plan your trek during June, July, and August because it is typically the monsoon season when the weather is bad and it is mostly raining all the time which can lead to landslides. Also, the months of December to February are very cold and full of snow which makes trekking again very difficult and dangerous.

Shrikhand Mahadev Trekking Tours

Positioned at an altitude of 5155 meters, Shrikhand Mahadev Peak looks like the Shivling. It is believed that Lord Shiva meditated at this peak and it was visited by Pandavas as well. The peak offers engrossing views of nature. The surrounding snow covered peaks add on to the natural charm of the place.

6 challenging routes to shrikhand mahadev

Last updated on october 29, 2019.

The Shrikhand Mahadev trek is considered one of the most difficult treks to do, but nothing can diminish the faith of a true Shiva Bhakt. Shrikhand Mahadev is a 72ft high fragmented Shivling. Each year, this holy place is officially open during Sawan Mas. Every year, the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra begins in July for 15 to 20 days. This year, the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra started on July 15th and ended on 31st July. Jathas or groups leave for the Yatra after their complete medical examination is conducted by the Trust and they are declared fit to take a trek to about 38 km.

It is surely a challenging trek but once you are in the holy place and Lord Shiva himself calls you to visit him. There is nothing that can prevent you from travelling forth to the Shrikhand Mahadev Peak. Lord Shiva himself gives its devotees the courage to reach up to Him. It is indeed an enriching experience one remembers for a lifetime.

In 2014, the journey has maintained by administrators. The online registration process has not started yet. The registration is done at the Base Camp Singhad accompanying the medical checkup of each devotee in ₹150. Shrikhand Kailash Mahadev is a religious journey. This place is linked to Lord Shiva and is one of the five Kailash. The devotees reach there by trekking on the very hard route which is 5140m from sea level.

Lord Shiva is established here in the form of fragmented ‘Shivling’. On the right-hand side of this mountain, there is ‘Kinnar Kailash’ and in the left direction, this mountain is connected with ‘Great Himalayan National Park’. It is fascinating to know that Shrikhand Mahadev can be reached in 6 different routes.

Shrikhand Mahadev

The mythology of Shrikhand Mahadev

The mythology of Shrikhand Mahadev is that the Devil Bhasmasur asked for a boon from Lord Shiva that whatever he keeps his hand on, that will be converted into Ashes. After getting the boon, Bhasampur became egoistic. Consequently, Bhasampur thought to place his hand on Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva arrived at Srikhand by entering the Devdhakkha cave in Nirmand place and was renovated as Shrikhand Shila. To shield Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Mohini to stop Bhasmasur’s plan. She persuaded Bhasmasur to dance with him. While the dance, Bhasmasur placed his hand on his head and was turned into Ashes.

After the death of Bhasmasur, Lord Shiva tried but could not get out of Shilakhandi rock. Afterthat Ganesh, Karthikeyan and Maa Parvati arrived at this place, then Mahadev came out after destroying the rock.

Two main tracks have been utilized largely to reach Shrikhand Mahadev, but some travellers are aware of the third way. But the truth is that Shrikhand Mahadev can be reached from 6 various routes, which are:

Nirmand – Baggul – Jao

This is the simplest route to reach Shrikhand Mahadev. People who are seen the vision of Shrikhand through this path know how easy it is, but if you compare it with other paths, then it is the only way you can feel comfortable. This journey starts from Jao village the distance of Shreekhand Mahadevis approximately 25.5 km. On this route of journey offline registration of each passenger is done in Sinhgad. Tourists get assistance in the journey, such as search and rescue, medical aid, district police and free boarding and lodging in several places. Due to the narrow path, and the constant climbing, mules, and horses are not available on this route yet. On this track, you can visit several temples like Nirvana Shiva cave, Parashuram temple, seven temples in Nirand, Nine gods including Mata Parvati in Jao, Hanuman temple.

Jury – Fancha

With 5373 m altitudes, the distance of this path is around 18 km. Ganavi village is established on the mouth of this valley, due to which this valley is also named ‘Ganavi Valley’ in the regional dialect. The jury is 1381 m above sea level and is found on this journey and begins from here. Direct climbing and ice make this route extremely tough. On this path to reach Shreekhand, there is no amenity other than the cottages, which makes it further hard.

After jury, Fancha is the first spot in this journey where lodging amenities are accessible. This site is about 15 km from Jury. The distance from Shrikhand to Fancha is approximately 18 km. When you arrive at Bhima Bahi, there is a sharp climb and the pilgrims have to face standing glaciers also. Due to the ice ahead of this place, travellers may have to face the problem of finding the way. Walking on this route is a good test for shoes.

Shrikhand Mahadev

Banjar-Badahad

Reaching Shrikhand Mahadev from Banjar-Badahad is considerably easier than another two routes. This route has also been used primarily by locals. There is no information of any kind on the internet about this route. Keep in mind that there is no facility of any kind on this path, so passengers will have to take the tents, sleeping bags and food items themselves, as well as locals, can also help you in this matter if they are available.

Badahad village is located at a height of 2050 m from sea level. This is where the journey begins. The first stop of this journey comes at the origin of the river Falacha, where the temple of GodFalach is also located. On the second day, the journey begins early in the morning. This day starts with a sharp climb, under which after walking 2-3 km the altitude increase to 650 m. On the next day, devotees instantly visit Bhim Dauri and visit Lord Mahadev.

Gushyeni-Banayag Marg

The fourth round to reach Shrikhand Mahadev proceeds from Gushyeni. This track is one of the dangerous tracks. The dangers of this route can be estimated from the fact that this path leads you directly to the base of the Kartik Swami Mountains which is 5100 m high. From Kartik Swami, the track raises the ‘Vimti Passenger’ from the back of Shrikhand Mountain. By this route, Shreekhand Mahadev will not be a journey but a mountain campaign. There is a good road worth travelling by Vehicle until Gusheni. Gusheni route leads along with the ‘Tirthan river’ flowing in ‘Tirthan valley’. The route reaches the crossing of many villages where the Tirthan river takes the form of a bayalag glacier. This track is also a section of the ‘Great Himalayan National Park’ and the Tirthan Valley. There are 11 hidden lakes on the glacier beyond ‘Baniyag’.

Shrikhand Mahadev

Jhakdi – Shreekhand Mahadev

Another route is situated between Nirmand and Jury by which the Shreekhand Mahadev can be reached. The fifth route to reach the place of Shrikhand Mahadev leaves Jhakdi which is 1181 m from sea level. According to locals, this path is even more challenging than Fancha road. So it is advisable not to travel through this route.

Kheerganga – Shrikhand Marg

The sixth route to reach Shrikhand Mahadev starts from Kheeraganga . Over time, this route has been buried under the glaciers. There is not much information available about this route.

The Trecking Journey

Thachru to bheem dwar.

The total distance from Shimla to Shrikhand Mahadev Peak is around 72 Km. Danda Chadai starts from Thachru to Kali Ghati, a 3 km trek. After this trek, pilgrims reach Kali Ghati and from Kali Ghati, Yatra will go to Bheem Talai and later to Kunsha valley. Then pilgrims will arrive at Bheem Dwar which is 8 km away from Kali Ghati. It is said that Bheem Dwar is the place where Pandu Putra Bheem made stairs to heaven which he could not complete in time. The rocks and big stones are arranged in a vertical position and something is written on these rocks which are fondly called Bheem Lipi.

Bheem Dwar to Parvati Bagh

From Bheem Dwar, the next stop is 4 km away called Parvati Bagh . As the name suggests, this place is full of rare Himalayan flowers. Parvati Bagh also contains the beautiful and rarest flower, Brahma Kamal, which is also considered to be Mata Parvati’s favourite flower. As you climb up, you will have to cross glaciers, etc. and then comes the Nain Sarovar Lake which is 3 km from Parvati Bagh. Nain Sarovar is a small lake/Sarovar which emerged from the tears of Mata Parvati who was waiting for Lord Shiva, but He took so long to arrive from the mountain top that Mata Parvati broke down and with her tears was made the Nain Sarovar Lake. This lake has frozen mountains and glaciers around it.

Shrikhand Mahadev

Parvati Bagh to Shrikhand Mahadev peak

The next and last step of this Yatra, the Shrikhand Mahadev peak can be noticed from the Parvati Bagh and Nain Sarovar Lake, if the climate is not hazy. After a trek of about 6 to 7 km, one can have the darshan of Shrikhand Mahadev peak, the abode of Lord Shiva. At this place the pilgrims can feel that their life is fulfilled, it is so divine. After having a proper darshan of Lord Shiva, pilgrims will have to trek down to Parvati Bagh the same day to have some rest at the camping site.

Estimated Cost for the trek

The entire expense or complete package of Shrikhand Mahadev Trek will be approximately ₹15,000 to ₹17,000 including accommodation and meals. However, this package may vary from agency to agency. The cost will also depend upon the number of people going to a Jatha (group).

Things to carry

One must carry the following essential things before starting with the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra, which is considered more difficult than the Amarnath Yatra.

Shrikhand Mahadev

1. A woollen sleeping bag 2. Good quality trekking shoes 3. Sleeping mats 4. A sweat protector backpack with its rain cover 5. Medicines such as cetirizine, ibuprofen, Ciprofloxacin, etc. 6. A small first aid box containing band-aids, cotton, and an antibiotic cream 7. Thermal wear and quick dry half sleeved t-shirts 8. 2-3 pairs of socks and comfortable clothes 9. Extra Phone batteries 10. Rehydration packets 11. Headlamp or torch 12. Some packaged food items such as nuts and dry fruits, but don’t overstuff your bag with food items

To sum up, the trek would probably be the toughest. But, the chants of Har Har Mahadev, Jai Bhole plus the satisfaction of reaching here will make this difficult trek an easy and fulfilling one.

Why register for this trek ?

Registration is recommended for this trek as it helps track the number of pilgrims going up and thus necessary steps can be taken to support them in case of an emergency.

How do I register for the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek ?

Online registration is not available for this trek. You have to register with the authorities at Singhad. The authorities set up camps at Singhad during the yatra period.

Is a medical certificate necessary for Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra ?

Yes a medical fitness certificate is necessary to perform this trek during the yatra period. Some devotees do skip the registration, however it is not recommended. This is a tough and dangerous trek and you should be physically and mentally strong to complete it. Also, there is a low oxygen level at the top, and some pilgrims do fall ill due to lack of oxygen. Therefore, please keep it in mind while planning for the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek.

Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra Route

Although there are other routes towards Shrikhand Mahadev, however the official Yatra starts from Jaon Village. Starting from the first, we have listed the main stops during this trek below.

Jaon Village

Jaon Village is where the motorable road for this trek ends. Jaun village is 170 Kms from Shimla via Bagipul and Nirmand. From Jaon, you’ll have to walk on a Jungle trail towards Singhad.

Distance from Jaun to Singhad is approx 3 Kms. Singhad is the last village on the Shrikhand Mahadev Trek. A Shiva temple with a beautiful idol of Lord Shiva is situated in Singhad Village. The authorities setup camps in Singhad for registration purposes. Starting from Singhad till Bhimdwar, you’ll find various camps setup offering free food/ bhandara to the pilgrims.

Bharatinala

The next stoppage is Bharatinala  which is 3 Kms from Singhad. At Bharatinala, there is an Ashram of Juna Akhada where the the Sadhus maintain the record of the Yatris. They also offer accommodation and food to the pilgrims.

Please refill your water bottles in Bharatinala as there is no source of water before Kali top. However some dhabas on the way might offer some water to you if available.

From Bharatinala, the steep climb also known as Danda Dhar starts. Danda Dhar goes all the way till Kali Top. The next stop would be Thachru, however there is a spot before Thachru where people have camps setup for trekkers.

Thachru is approx 5 Kms from Bharatinala. Thachru is the last place where you’ll see trees in this trek. After Thachru, the tree line starts decreasing and totally ends when you reach Kali top.

Kali Top is 3 kms from Thachru and it is the highest point in the area. Named after goddess Kali, it has a small stone temple dedicated to goddess Kali. You’ll get the best view of the Shrikhand peak and Shivalingam from Kali Top. The whole view from here is totally mesmerizing and makes you realize the grandness of the Himalayas. Although there are some camps at Kali top, but most trekkers prefer to continue further for overnight stay either at Bhim tal, Kunsha or Bhim Dwar if time allows. However, if you reach Kalitop in the evening, we would recommend you to stay overnight here only.

Bhim Tal or Bhim Talai

From Kali top, there is a trail downwards to Bhimtalai which is 2 kms approx. It is said that Bhim (Bheema) created the small pond situated here, hence the name Bhim taal. The next stop would be Kunsha which is another 2 Kms from here. There are 4 small glaciers formed on water streams, on the way till Bhimdwar which you have to cross very carefully.

Kunsha is unarguably one of the most beautiful spots during this trek till now. The distance between Bhimtal to Kunsha is 2 Kms approx. This place is extremely beautiful and very photogenic. After Kunsha, you’ll have to walk another 3 Kms towards Bhim Dwar. The trail between Kunsha to Bhimdwar is narrow but easy to walk.

Bhimdwar is the place which is said to be inhabited by the Pandavas for some period. Bhim Dwar is treated as a base camp for Shrikhand trek, as there is no accommodation options as you go up further except Parvati Bagh.

Parvati Bagh

Distance from Parvati Bagh to Bhimdwar distance is around 2 kms and it also has a few accommodation options during the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra. However stay at Bhimtal is preferred by most pilgrims as Parvati Bagh has a very few camps available. If one does not find accommodation there, then the only option left would be to come down 2 kms to Bhimdwar. It has happened to people many time, thus plan accordingly.

Nain Sarovar Lake

Now after Parvati Bagh, the next waypoint is the Nain Sarovar Lake. The distance from Parvati Bagh to Nain Sarovar lake is around 2 kms. This  lake is considered as a very holy lake and some people even take a dip in the icy cold water of the Nain Sarovar lake for blessings. From Nain Sarovar the terrain gets tougher and the trail gets narrow. This is where the trek gets toughest. Shrikhand Mahadev Peak is approx 6 kms from here.

Just before the Shrikhand Mahadev Peak, you’ll find huge boulders known as Bhim Bahi. There are very distinct marks on these stones, which are said to be written by Bhim while he was building a stairway to heaven.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Peak

After crossing the Bhim Bahi, you’ll finally reach the magnificent Shrikhand Mahadev Peak. The view from up here would be absolutely amazing if the weather allows you to see anything. People usually take off their shoes out of respect, when approaching the 75 feet Shiva Lingam(approx) to take blessings. The trek downhill is equally challenging if not more.

Please note that if you have any respiratory problems, please consult a doctor before attempting to do this trek. This is because the oxygen levels are low at the top. Due to this, it is also recommended to start the climb downwards as soon as possible and not to stay at the top for long.

Hope, it will be helpful for the fellow travelers during their trek. Please feel free to contact us for any additional information about the trek. May your journey be safe and successful by the grace of Lord Shiva!
