Is Edge of Tomorrow 2 now possible with Tom Cruise back at Warner Bros.?

A decade ago, Tom Cruise  and Emily Blunt starred in Edge of Tomorrow , a sci-fi alien invasion flick based on the memorably named Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill . However, Edge of Tomorrow didn’t bring in the big profits for Warner Bros. and it finished with $370.5 million worldwide against a $178 million budget. Nevertheless, the film has picked up a cult following that has clamored for Edge of Tomorrow 2 , and those hopes may actually come to fruition now that Cruise is back at Warner Bros. with a long-term deal.

Via The Hollywood Reporter , Cruise’s new pact with Warner Bros. includes teaming up with studio executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to develop and produce “original and franchise theatrical films.” Cruise’s other successful franchises — Top Gun and Mission: Impossible — are both lined up at Paramount. The only preexisting WB franchise that Cruise has already starred in is Edge of Tomorrow . That is, unless Cruise suddenly wants to star in a Harry Potter flick or put on a cape for DC.

Cruise’s frequent collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, co-wrote the script for Edge of Tomorrow . And McQuarrie first mentioned that Cruise came up with a concept for the sequel in 2015 . Director Doug Liman and Blunt have also expressed their desire to return for a sequel. As recently as last year, Blunt appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and said that she had already been slipped the script by Liman. But she cast doubt on the film happening anytime soon.

“I mean, I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how,” said Blunt. “And how many Mission Impossible s does [Cruise] need?”

As it happens, Cruise is filming his final Mission: Impossible movie this year, which will finish the story that began in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One . Cruise will than make a movie for Universal that will be partially filmed in the International Space Station. Beyond that, perhaps there could finally be room for Edge of Tomorrow 2 .

In 1986, the original Top Gun helped firmly establish Tom Cruise as a movie star. And unlike many icons from the '80s, Cruise has maintained that status and avoided the direct-to-video phase of his career. Now, Cruise is revisiting the franchise that started it all in Top Gun: Maverick. The film was actually finished three years ago, but it has faced numerous pandemic-related delays. Now that the new trailer has arrived, there are finally clear skies ahead for the sequel.

The trailer picks up with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) nearly 30 years after the original film. While Maverick's peers have gone on to bigger things, he remains a captain and a test pilot simply so he can keep flying missions. Maverick finds himself back in the Top Gun program while teaching a new generation of pilots the skills they will need to survive in hostile skies. But at least one of the cadets will remind Maverick of his darkest hour, when his friend, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), was killed in the original movie.

In theory, Warner Bros. Pictures should be basking in the spotlight of The Batman's impressive opening weekend, secure in the knowledge that three other big DC films are coming this year. However, those plans received a major shake-up today, as two of this year's marquee superhero films have been pushed all the way back into next year.

Via Variety, The Flash movie, which was previously slated to race into theaters on November 4, will now arrive on June 23, 2023. Meanwhile, the Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is not set to be released on March 17, 2023, three months after its former date of December 16.

In 2007, Warner Bros. adapted Richard Matheson's post-apocalyptic sci-fi classic I Am Legend as a film, with Will Smith in the leading role. While the ending of that film didn't leave much room for a sequel, Deadline is reporting that I Am Legend 2 has come together with some pretty serious star power. Not only is Smith slated to headline the sequel, but he will also appear alongside Michael B. Jordan as co-lead in the movie. Both Smith and Jordan will also produce the project.

In the first film, Smith portrayed Dr. Robert Neville, one of the creators of a failed attempt to cure cancer. Instead of curing mankind of a virulent disease, the customized virus killed most of the human population. The vast majority of the survivors mutated into vampire-like creatures known as Darkseekers. Robert was one of the only remaining humans, and he lived a solitary existence as he tried to find a cure.

EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Could Finally Happen Thanks To Tom Cruise's New Deal With Warner Bros.

EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Could Finally Happen Thanks To Tom Cruise's New Deal With Warner Bros.

Sci-fi fans have spent years waiting for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel to become a reality, and with Tom Cruise now set to produce and make moves for Warner Bros., it's one step closer to becoming a reality.

It was recently revealed that Tom Cruise is leaving Paramount Pictures in his rearview after signing an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com ) has since shed new light on that decision and mentions at least one of the projects the Mission: Impossible star could be mulling over: Edge of Tomorrow 2 !

According to the trade, Cruise has grown increasingly unhappy with the studio in recent years; for example, he went so far as to lawyer up in 2021 when they announced plans to give Top Gun: Maverick a 45-day run in theaters. Pressure was also being put on the actor to give his seal of approval to Mission: Impossible or Days of Thunder TV shows for Paramount+ which, given his love of the theatrical experience, was always unlikely.

Cruise caused them some problems too, though, specifically with the latest Mission: Impossible movies, which, under his watch, have gone way over budget ( Dead Reckoning - Part 1 is said to have lost as much as $25 million after underperforming last summer).

"Tensions have gotten higher between Tom and Paramount as relates to budget and collaboration," one insider explains. "He doesn’t send script pages, doesn’t let them see dailies. He used to be very responsible on budgets. That changed on Dead Reckoning."

At Warner Bros., Cruise reportedly plans to launch another big franchise; possibly a thriller or action movie. There's no word on the possibility of that being DC-related.

Back to Edge of Tomorrow , and Warner Bros. execs are eager for Cruise to move forward with a sequel to the 2014 movie. That's been in development for what feels like forever, and it sounds like it could finally become a reality with the actor now part of the studio which released the first instalment.

Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's critically acclaimed 2004 novel  All You Need Is Kill ,  Edge of Tomorrow  arrived in 2014 to positive reviews and a solid $370 million haul at the worldwide box office on a $178 million budget.

Directed by Dough Liman, the movie starred Cruise and Emily Blunt as soldiers trapped in a time loop, with the former using that as an opportunity to better his skills and eventually defeat Earth's alien invaders. It was a fun premise that left sci-fi fans desperate for a sequel.

While plans for a follow-up have yet to be confirmed, it was way back in 2015 that we first heard about tentative plans to expand the franchise. Blunt has said on numerous occasions that she'd like to reprise the role and we'd bet on her being enlisted for this follow-up too.

Keep checking back here for more Edge of Tomorrow updates as we have them.

‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ Director Doug Liman Gives Update on the Sequel

The filmmaker says scheduling is going to be the biggest hurdle.

Edge of Tomorrow is a miracle of a movie, and may become a prime example of goodwill and word of mouth actually pushing a sequel into reality. The Doug Liman -directed sci-fi film combined a juicy time travel twist with a cowardly Tom Cruise character and a downright badass Emily Blunt performance to result in a hilarious, surprising, and wildly entertaining ride. The Warner Bros. film grossed $370.5 million at the box office, which isn’t shabby but also not a runaway success given that its budget was near $180 million, meaning a sequel or follow-up seemed like a no-go.

However, people kept finding Edge of Tomorrow on home video, and the fanbase grew so loud that Liman, Cruise, Blunt, and writer Christopher McQuarrie convened to hash out a sequel (which, it turns out, may actually be a prequel ). The follow-up is still in development, but when Collider’s own Steve Weintraub recently sat down with Liman to talk about his new film American Made , he had to ask about the status of Edge of Tomorrow 2 .

“Tom and Emily [Blunt] and I are really excited to go do it. We have a script. We’re just trying to find a time to schedule it, between my schedule and Emily's and Tom's. But it's one of these things where it's a sequel whose origins come from the best possible place, which is, it's not a studio saying, ‘Hey, we think we can make some more money. Let's just stamp out another one.’ This sequel originated with fans of the original film who continually came up to Tom and myself and Emily and told us how much they loved the movie and would we ever consider a sequel. And enough people said that to me and to Tom and to Emily that we finally sat down and said, ‘What would a sequel even look like?’ We ended up with Chris McQuarrie coming up with a great story.”

Liman confirms that previously announced writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse wrote the Edge of Tomorrow 2 script under McQuarrie’s supervision (he was busy writing and directing  Mission: Impossible 6 ), but indeed the main issue regarding when and if Edge 2 happens is scheduling. Liman just started shooting the YA sci-fi adaptation Chaos Walking , which hits theaters in March 2019; Cruise is about to finish up Mission: Impossible 6 and then start shooting the Top Gun sequel Maverick next year; and Blunt just wrapped Marry Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place but remains one of the most in-demand actors working today.

With Chaos Walking hitting theaters in Spring 2019 and Top Gun: Maverick scheduled for July 2019, it seems like 2019 would be the earliest that cameras might roll on Edge of Tomorrow 2 , and that’s assuming Liman, Cruise, and Blunt don’t line up other big projects that might get in the way.

The good news is that all involved seem genuinely passionate about making  Edge of Tomorrow 2  happen, so it’s not some contractual obligation:

“It really comes from the heart. And by the way, I never worked with Tom on one of these giant tent-pole movies, so I don't ... Everything I've ever seen him do or worked with him on comes from the heart in the most pure place. I mean, he is always thinking about his fans. He's always thinking about the audience. He's not one of these movie stars that thinks he's an anointed movie star. He genuinely understands that he's a movie star because people like his movies. And he wants to deliver for those people.”

So be patient people.  Edge of Tomorrow 2  might actually happen, but it’s gonna be a bit.

What's Going On With Edge Of Tomorrow 2, And Will We Ever See It?

Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise, Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise isn't just one of the reigning kings of the box office. In recent years, the actor has also proven himself king of the box office revival , pumping fresh blood into his own decades-old franchises with sequels that have garnered praise and raked in returns across the globe. In 2018, the sixth "Mission: Impossible" film became the series' most lucrative, bringing in nearly $800 million worldwide ( per Box Office Mojo ). In 2022, Cruise one-upped himself with "Top Gun: Maverick," a sequel to a thirty-four-year-old action film that earned an astounding $1.48 billion at the global box office.

The 60-year-old action star has clearly got the juice, and the only question now is where he'll apply his cinema-saving stardom next. He's already set to return to the role of Ethan Hunt again in this year's "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1," a spectacle-filled follow-up that's set to include car chases, a fight atop a speeding train, and a motorcycle cliff jump that Cruise reportedly really did . Since Cruise is always apparently thinking ahead to his next big stunt, it's worth raising the question: what will he do next?

Live, die, repeat again

When it comes to returning to ground he's already covered, there's one Cruise film that seems like a natural choice for a sequel: "Edge of Tomorrow." The 2014 film, also sometimes called "Live Die Repeat," is based on a book by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and co-stars Cruise and Emily Blunt as two military leaders tasked with helping to save the world from aliens called Mimics. Only, their mission is interrupted and complicated when Cruise's character, Major Bill Cage, gets caught in a time loop after exposure to alien blood. The film was well-received, and /Film's own review called it a movie that takes "a rewarding time travel conceit" and "builds upon that construct in a way we've never seen, managing to entertain with humor, action and suspense."

Despite not making as much of a splash as expected in America, "Edge of Tomorrow" was a moderate financial success upon release, with a global box office gross of $370 against a budget of $178 million according to Box Office Mojo . Those aren't "Top Gun: Maverick" numbers by any means, but with Cruise's knack for punching up sequels, they're enough to warrant a second installment. The cast and crew apparently agreed as well: in 2016, a sequel was announced with "Race" screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse reportedly attached to the script, and original film director Doug Liman returning behind the camera. The project has since seen further script changes, with rewrites from both Jez Butterworth and Matthew Robinson over the years according to IGN .

'I think the movie is probably too expensive'

In the six years since it was first announced, an "Edge of Tomorrow" sequel has failed to materialize, but that hasn't stopped the cast and crew from speaking up about the prospect of another chapter. In 2021, Blunt told Entertainment Weekly she had read a script that was "in really great shape," while way back in 2016, Liman told IGN that the follow-up film is "going to revolutionize how people make sequels," but didn't elaborate further. The first "Edge of Tomorrow" film was a complex, special effects-heavy time travel story, and it sounds like the sequel would be equally ambitious. In 2021, Blunt spoke about the future of the film in an interview with Howard Stern  and worried that it might be "too expensive."

"Honestly, I think the movie is probably too expensive," Blunt shared . "Yeah, I just don't know how we're going to do it." The actress noted that she, Cruise, and Liman would each still love to do the movie, but that "it's hard to align everyone's schedules." In addition to budgetary and scheduling concerns, Blunt seemed to indicate that the film industry — at the time impacted by COVID-19 — is changing, and maybe not in a way that makes the sequel seem more viable. "Until we figure out what's going on with the industry ... Honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make?"

Liman and Cruise have another ambitious project in the works

Liman, meanwhile, seems confident in the idea behind the "Edge of Tomorrow" sequel but says it needs both its stars in order to get it off the ground. "If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it's going to happen," he told Collider in 2021. If both Blunt and Liman express interest and cite scheduling problems, it might be up to the third side of the triangle, Cruise, to make a second "Edge of Tomorrow" happen. The actor has had a busy schedule lately; in addition to the upcoming two-part "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Cruise is reportedly planning to make a movie in space with Liman. That project would reportedly be shot aboard the International Space Station, according to Variety.

If Cruise comes back down to earth long enough to film a second "Edge of Tomorrow," Blunt returns as well, and the project isn't too expensive, it sounds like the film may be a done deal. But those are some pretty big "ifs" that may take a while to sort out. In the meantime, Liman says the idea for the second film is one that would center its stars with a "character-driven" sequel. "I get sometimes the sequel just has to have more firepower or more explosions," Liman tells Collider , "but no visual effect is going to top what you're going to get from a great scene performed by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt."

Emily Blunt Hopes to Reunite With Tom Cruise for Edge of Tomorrow Sequel

Emily Blunt addresses the possibility of reuniting with Tom Cruise for Edge of Tomorrow 2.

For the fans hoping to see Edge of Tomorrow finally get a sequel, Emily Blunt is making it clear that she's not the one standing in the way of the potential movie happening.

Before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Blunt had participated in an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and the full conversation has now been posted online. During the chat, Horowitz brings up Edge of Tomorrow , and Blunt is quick to recall how much of a strain the heavy exo-suit she had to wear for the movie was on her body. She noted, "I don't forget. No, my back still tweaks out on me sometimes, you know?"

Related: Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt Says Nolan Doesn’t Talk Down to Audiences

Despite the back pain that came with filming the first movie, Blunt remains hopeful that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will happen. When Horowitz brought up the possibility of a sequel, the Oppenheimer star reiterated her interest in doing another movie. She confirmed how she's even read a screenplay for Edge of Tomorrow 2 and noted how she's game to return whenever Tom Cruise is ready to make the potential film. "I wish there could be [a sequel]," Blunt says. "There was [a script] that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me... I would love to make it a reality, but I just don't know when, or how, or how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need?"

Noting how the character her co-star played was different from his usual roles, Blunt added, "Come back to the side where you can be... you know, wasn't he brilliant [in Edge of Tomorrow ]? He was amazing as the cowardly hero... I adored him. He was the best." On making the sequel, Blunt then added, "I'm so ready. I'm not the impediment. I promise."

Will Edge of Tomorrow 2 Ever Happen?

Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow was written by Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth. The sci-fi action flick, released in 2014, is set in an alternate reality where Europe has been conquered by an alien race. Cruise plays a public relations officer caught in a time loop during the invasion wherein he attempts to learn from each repeating experience how to overcome the attackers. Blunt co-stars as a soldier who helps train Cruise's character to become a better fighter. The movie was a moderate success at the box office and was met with positive reviews, and while sequel talks have gone back for years , it remains unclear if Edge of Tomorrow 2 will ever really happen.

Edge of Tomorrow is currently streaming on both Netflix and Max.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 still hasn't been officially confirmed and if we're being honest, we're not exactly hopeful that we'll get to see it.

She had previously praised the script in December 2020 , but had no idea when everybody's schedules would line up to actually make the movie: "Yes, [the script] is really promising and really, really cool. I just don't know when everything's going to sort of align."

In fact, the most recent Edge of Tomorrow -centric news we've had was in December 2022 when Blunt had to clarify her story about Tom Cruise 'swearing' at her on set , after the original story was blown out of proportion.

Military, Military uniform, Soldier, Army, Military organization, Troop, Machine,

This lack of knowledge about the sequel will be nothing new to fans as there's been various stages of development on Edge of Tomorrow 2 (or Live Die Repeat and Repeat , which it may or may not still be called) since 2018.

It seemed as though things were finally moving on the long-awaited sequel when Matthew Robinson was hired as a writer in March 2019. But later on that year, director Doug Liman revealed that he has "no idea" if the movie will actually get made.

If Edge of Tomorrow 2 does actually happen though, what can we expect from the long-gestating sequel?

As mentioned above, Edge of Tomorrow 2 has yet to be confirmed as of December 2022 so we don't have an official release date – and we're no closer to finding one out either.

At the start of 2018, it looked like the sequel would be the next movie that Liman would work on. And in March 2018, Liman confirmed that he was working on a rewrite of the script with Jez Butterworth , who helped with the first movie.

The problem was that everyone was a bit too busy to film it at that time, and the sequel will only happen when everyone can do it and since Blunt and Cruise are two pretty in-demand stars, that's tougher than you'd think.

tom cruise edge of tomorrow

In September 2018, writer Christopher McQuarrie responded to a fan's question on Twitter about the status of Live Die Repeat and Repeat . "We're working on it. No idea how or when it will happen," he replied.

And then the next update came in March 2019 as we noted above. Even though the original idea for the sequel might have changed, Robinson will be developing the script with Liman.

Liman confirmed in October 2019 that "the script is ready" , adding that he hoped the sequel would film after Tom Cruise has finished working on Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 .

He told Collider : "Between my schedule, Tom [Cruise]'s schedule, and Emily [Blunt]'s schedule, it's tough. Certainly, it's a world that I love, and like with [his TV show] Impulse , there's a lot more story to be told."

That means we can expect some wait still for Edge of Tomorrow 2 if it happens, but the director is still working on the sequel though, revealing his planning stages on Instagram in early January 2020.

For now, all we can do is wait and see if 2023 brings us an unexpected gift of the sequel actually filming.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 cast: Who's coming back for Edge of Tomorrow 2?

Since they've waited for them to be available to make the sequel, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will be back Major William Cage and Sergeant Rita Vrataski.

Liman has been teasing another character who will be critical for the sequel, maybe even as much as its two leads: "There's a third character in the sequel that's going to, for sure, steal the movie."

Sadly, Bill Paxton passed away in 2017 , so it remains to be seen if the sequel will recast his character, Master Sergeant Farell.

bill paxton

Given the time loop ending of the first movie, any of the original characters could come back, whatever happened to them in the first movie. But without an official sequel announcement, we don't have any confirmed cast members yet.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 plot: What will Edge of Tomorrow 2 be about?

Perhaps given the first movie's complex timey-wimey plot, the original concept for the sequel was one you had to get your head around .

"First of all the story is so amazing – much better than the original film, and I loved the original film – and second of all, it's a sequel that's a prequel," Liman enthused, and he expanded on it to Digital Spy .

"If I'm going to do a sequel for the first time in my life I want to make it the opposite of what you'd expect from a sequel and we found a story that does that," he explained .

It's not yet clear how much Matthew Robinson's idea for the sequel differs from that, but with Liman having worked on the script as well, we don't expect the approach to have changed too much.

Tom Cruise, Edge of Tomorrow

Before the change of writer, Liman spoke about believing that a sequel should be "smaller" , adding: "I don't need an action sequence every two minutes."

If you need a quick refresher, the first movie ended with Major William Cage (Cruise) defeating the Omega that controls the aliens, seemingly dying in the process – although he floats towards the Omega's time-travel-permitting blood.

Cage then wakes up before his first meeting with General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) when he was sent to France to battle the aliens.

A news report states that all alien activity has ceased following a mysterious surge in Paris and Cage goes to Heathrow to find Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Blunt) who, unsurprisingly, looks like she's never met him before because – in this timeline – she hasn't.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 trailer: Any Edge of Tomorrow 2 footage yet?

Given all the delays with the project, we'll just be happy for the sequel to actually start shooting and even that feels a long way away yet.

So, in other words, a trailer won't be surfacing any time soon.

Tom Cruise & Warner Bros. Sign Deal to Make Movies Together, Could This Lead to Edge of Tomorrow 2?

Tom Cruise joins forces with Warner Bros. to make franchise movies, and fans are hoping this will lead to an Edge of Tomorrow sequel.

  • Tom Cruise signs new deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce films, solidifying his status as a Hollywood legend.
  • Cruise's recent success with " Top Gun: Maverick " proves his star power and ability to save theaters amidst the pandemic.
  • Fans hope this partnership will lead to the long-awaited sequel to " Edge of Tomorrow ," with Cruise and Emily Blunt returning.

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise has signed a new deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group to “jointly develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films” in what the studio describes as a “newly formed strategic partnership.” Over the last few decades, Cruise has carved out a legacy like few others in Hollywood and is often cited as the last remaining movie star. The actor continues to see huge success on the big screen, with his 2022 release Top Gun: Maverick reaching over $1 billion at the box office and being heralded as the movie that saved theaters following the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Who knows what cinematic delights Cruise’s joining forces with Warner Bros. will bring, but Co-Chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca & Pam Abdy are looking forward to bringing “more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead.”

"We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry. Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, 'We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!' Today, that becomes a reality and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition. We couldn't be more excited to welcome Tom back to Warner Bros. and look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead."

Cruise has also released a statement, paying tribute to De Luca, Abdy, and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav.

"I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience. I look forward to making great movies together!"

Could the New Deal Lead To Edge of Tomorrow 2?

Edge of tomorrow 2.

Tom Cruise has worked with a multitude of different studios over the years, and this includes Warner Bros. Pictures, with the actor having starred in such movies as Risky Business, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, The Last Samurai , and the 2014 sci-fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow . Set during an ongoing war between humanity and attacking aliens, Edge of Tomorrow stars Cruise as the arrogant-yet-cowardly Captain Cage, Edge of Tomorrow sees him caught in a time loop and teaming up with a warrior to save the planet.

Edge of Tomorrow was met with rave reviews upon release, and a sequel has been on the cards ever since. A script was completed way back in 2018, and star Emily Blunt is up for a return alongside Cruise. So, what is everyone waiting for?

Now that Cruise has officially partnered with Warner Bros., fans of Edge of Tomorrow have quickly turned to social media to call for the long-awaited sequel to finally come to fruition . But will it happen?

Alongside this new deal, Cruise has several other projects already in the pipeline, including a return as Ethan Hunt in the now untitled eighth Mission: Impossible movie.

Why Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Might Not Happen Anymore, According To Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow

Back in 2014, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt teamed up with director Doug Liman for the time loop action flick Edge of Tomorrow (or Live Die Repeat , if you prefer), and while the final product didn’t make that much of a splash at the box office, it earned a lot of positive critical reception. That was enough to warrant a sequel being officially announced by spring 2016, but five years later, there’s still no sign of Edge of Tomorrow 2 . At this point, Blunt is skeptical the sequel will still happen for one reason: money.

While promoting her latest movie, A Quiet Place: Part II , on Howard Stern , Emily Blunt discussed her time on Edge of Tomorrow with the eponymous host. When Stern inquired about if Tom Cruise had ever asked her to do a sequel, the actress answered:

We wanted to. Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive. Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make.

It’s understandable why Emily Blunt would be concerned about the cost of making Edge of Tomorrow 2 . The first movie worked off a $178 million budget and ended its box office run collecting $370.5 million worldwide. It’s one thing for a studio for shell out between $150-200 million on an entry in a massive franchise, like Star Wars or the MonsterVerse, but for something like Edge of Tomorrow 2 , Warner Bros might not be as keen nowadays pouring nearly as much money into it as it did with Edge of Tomorrow nearly a decade ago, especially considering that movie’s lukewarm theatrical performance.

But as Emily Blunt also noted, scheduling has also been a major obstacle with getting Edge of Tomorrow 2 off the ground. Back in January, Doug Liman stated that with the script ready to go, it’s just a matter of him, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt all finding the time to finally tackle the sequel . But that’s easier said than done; Cruise is currently working on Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 , Blunt recently signed on to the BBC and Amazon Studios series The English , and Liman is gearing up to re-team with Cruise on their outer space movie . So yeah, Edge of Tomorrow 2 is clearly lower down on their lists of priorities.

All this isn’t to say that Edge of Tomorrow 2 definitely won’t happen, but as things stand now, its chances of moving into production seem slimmer than ever. Doug Liman once described the project as “a sequel that’s a prequel,” and The Invention of Lying ’s Matthew Robinson wrote the most recent version of the script . But even now, we have no idea what Tom Cruise’s William Cage and Emily Blunt’s Rita Vrataski would deal with in their next adventure, other than that it would involve them going backwards in time . With the way things are going, if Edge of Tomorrow 2 doesn’t end up getting made, hopefully we’ll at least learn what in store for these characters.

But rest assured, if it’s announced that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is finally moving forward, we here at CinemaBlend will let you know. In the meantime, you can next see Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place : Part II when it premieres on May 28, followed by Jungle Cruise on July 30. Tom Cruise will return to the big screen for Top Gun: Maverick on November 19, and Mission: Impossible 7 will arrive on May 27, 2022.

Tom Cruise Joaquin Phoenix

In January, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy jetted to London to connect with the new crown jewel of the studio, Tom Cruise . The three met to identify a film that would kick off their nonexclusive “strategic partnership.” Sources say a raft of possibilities were discussed, including an “Edge of Tomorrow” follow-up and Quentin Tarantino ’s “The Movie Critic,” which currently isn’t set up with a distributor and has Warner Bros., like every major studio, salivating.

Popular on Variety

“The strategy at Warner Bros. right now and the reason they made some of these big star deals is they’re basically playing with other people’s money,” says one insider. “They’re shopping for Quentin or Cruise with the notion they can use it as a shiny object that is going to be additive when Zaslav sells the company.”

That time may be approaching. In April, Warner Bros. Discovery can entertain offers to buy, sell or merge with a studio like NBCUniversal, as many on the lot believe will happen. That’s when the two-year lock-up period expires as part of the 2022 deal that united WarnerMedia and Discovery. All of the recent moves, from a first-look pact with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap to the quest to land Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” follow-up are akin to painting a house before it hits the market.

And this is one splashy renovation. The budget for Todd Phillips’ musical “Joker” sequel — one of De Luca and Abdy’s first green lights — has ballooned to about $200 million, a significant bump from the $60 million cost of the first film. Sources say Joaquin Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the clown prince of crime, while Lady Gaga is taking home about $12 million to play Harley Quinn. “Joker” took in more than $1 billion, but musicals are tricky. Case in point: Warners lost $40 million on last year’s “The Color Purple,” according to sources. Though that one can be blamed on the previous regime.

Some argue that spending big is essential when releasing movies in theaters.

“There’s only so much top talent in Hollywood, and it’s very competitive and stretched thin because a lot of talent have deals in streaming,” says Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. “If theatrical is going to work, you need the A-lister like Tom and Leo, and Warner Bros. is spending what they need to spend to keep this talent.”

But executives across town believe Warners’ math sometimes doesn’t add up, with the studio decried as fiscally irresponsible. The Anderson film, for instance, was greenlit with a $115 million budget, according to sources. Underscoring the gamble, none of the director’s movies has crossed $80 million at the box office. His latest, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” made $33 million worldwide. Even with Cruise’s star power, “Magnolia” only mustered $48.5 million. (It was De Luca, then a New Line exec, who convinced Cruise to play “Magnolia’s” misogynistic self-help guru.) The pair are said to be less pumped about another auteur’s latest: Bong Joon Ho ’s “Mickey 17.” In January, Warner Bros. pulled the $150 million Robert Pattinson sci-fi starrer from its schedule and then moved it to 2025. A Warner rep insists: “There is, of course, enthusiasm for it.”

As merger mania draws near, De Luca and Abdy seem unwilling to push back on talent asks. But apparently they did just that during the Coogler-Jordan negotiations. The director and star wanted 25% of first-dollar gross to split and two guaranteed theatrical release slots for future films. Both deal points were nixed.

Despite the pressure to acquiesce to demands from top talent, De Luca and Abdy can still say no.

tom cruise edge of tomorrow 2

Untitled Tom Cruise Space Movie

tom cruise edge of tomorrow 2

Bientôt une suite à Edge of Tomorrow ?

tom cruise edge of tomorrow 2

“It’s that good”: Doctor Strange Director Puts Tom Cruise’s Most Underrated Movie in Top 5 Thrillers Ever Made That Actor Should Consider Reprising Soon

T om Cruise has made one thing crystal clear when it comes to stunts, he’s practically invincible, and there’s nothing he can’t pull off. Yet, now that he’s seemingly conquered everything there is to be conquered in the stunt world, fans are itching for him to return to some of his villainous roles.

With a career spanning decades and a resume that includes nearly every stunt imaginable, Cruise’s return to portraying compelling antagonists seems like the most logical next step to his fans. It’s not just fans who are eager for this, even esteemed figures like Scott Derrickson, the director behind Doctor Strange , have recognized the brilliance of Cruise’s past performances in thrillers. Derrickson’s endorsement, labeling one of Cruise’s films as one of the top five thrillers ever made, only adds fuel to the anticipation surrounding Cruise’s potential return to villainous roles.

Doctor Strange Director Scott Derrickson is Obsessed with Tom Cruise’s Collateral

Scott Derrickson recently took a moment to appreciate a Tom Cruise movie called Collateral , labeling it as one of the best thrillers ever made and even placing it in his top 5. This praise has sparked discussions about just how great of an actor Tom Cruise really is.

“Brad and Tom together?”: Tom Cruise Turning into Zombie Fighting Action God in Fan-made World War Z 2 Poster Has us Excited For a Sequel That May Never Happen

While the Mission Impossible series has undoubtedly been a lucrative venture for the actor, it doesn’t showcase all the facets and nuances of Cruise’s craft. It’s films like Interview with the Vampire and Collateral that bring out a certain dark side, which fans are absolutely in awe of. In the X post, the filmmaker wrote,

This led to the realization to dawn on many that when the actor steps outside the action genre, the magic he’s truly capable of is outstanding. The gritty thriller by Michael Mann features Jamie Foxx as Max , a cab driver hijacked by Tom Cruise as Vincent, a chillingly maniacal contract killer who coerces Max into chauffeuring him from murder to murder over one harrowing night.

Tom Cruise plays his role absolutely magnificently. The spine-chilling quality this handsome hero holds truly is amazing. His departure from the typical hero role was, in fact, refreshing and kept audiences on the edge of their seats. However, despite the excitement he brought to this role, Cruise has largely returned to playing standard hero characters in his subsequent films, leaving fans longing for more of his dark side.

Why Fans Believe Tom Cruise Shines Brightest in Villainous Roles

Since then, people have been yearning for the actor to delve into the role of a villain. Although the actor has done a few here and there, fans now believe it’s high time the actor returned to something he does truly amazingly. Another role that deserves recognition is Interview with the Vampire.

Cruise plays Lestat, the chief antagonist and primary character of Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles series of books and stories. And he absolutely nails it, Lestat is simultaneously amused by his detachment from humanity and utterly obsessed with it. Another gem was Magnolia . Here is what some fans have to say,

Cruise is a phenomenal actor with limitless capabilities. Cruise’s portrayal in Edge of Tomorrow, much like in American Made , breathed new life into him after years of somewhat anonymous performances in lackluster blockbusters such as Oblivion and Knight and Day.

“I suddenly saw the whole film collapsing”: Hugh Grant’s First Tryst to Become Tom Cruise Almost Ended Up Killing Him in a Movie That Didn’t Even Want to Cast Him

Fans truly hope the actor will soon make a comeback to villainy. Despite numerous speculations and rumors, no official updates confirming any of the news have been made. Fans will just have to wait patiently.

Directed by David Leitch, The Fall Guy is an action-comedy movie loosely based on the 1980s TV series of the same name.

The Fall Guy follows Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), a Hollywood stunt performer and stunt double for famous action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Colt retires after a stunt gone wrong that broke his back but returns over a year later when producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham) needs him to find Ryder before the movie they’re working on is canceled. To further complicate it, the director of the movie is Jody Moreno (Blunt), Colt’s ex-girlfriend whom he left after his accident. Despite being a main character, Jody doesn’t take part in the action, which makes the anticipation for another action movie starring Blunt even bigger.

The Fall Guy ends with a bang. With such an exciting conclusion to the story, we break down the action comedy's ending, sequel plans & major cameos.

Emily Blunt Only Gets 2 Action Scenes In The Fall Guy

Emily blunt was mostly kept out of action scenes in the fall guy.

Blunt is mostly left out of the action scenes of The Fall Guy except for two, but she is at the front and center of some of the movie’s best and funniest moments.

At the beginning of The Fall Guy , Jody is a camerawoman, which is how she met Colt and why they got together, as they worked on different movies together. The movie Ryder was starring in when he disappeared, Metalstorm , was Jody’s directorial debut, which Gail used to blackmail Colt and bring him in as a stunt performer while also doing his best to find Ryder. Because of this, Blunt is mostly left out of the action scenes of The Fall Guy except for two, but she is at the front and center of some of the movie’s best and funniest moments.

After Colt’s supposed death after a boat chase while escaping from Ryder’s henchmen, he sneaked onto the set of Metalstorm dressed as an alien. Colt entered Jody’s trailer and approached her from behind, with Jody fighting him as she thought she was being attacked by a stranger . The second action moment Blunt got in The Fall Guy was in the final fight between Ryder, his men, and Colt and Metalstorm ’s team of stunt performers and more.

It's disappointing that Jody didn’t get more than two action scenes in The Fall Guy , especially given Blunt’s background in the action genre.

Jody was taken by one of Ryder’s henchmen, whom she briefly fought . Although she wasn’t a stunt performer like Colt, it was still disappointing that Jody didn’t get more than two action scenes in The Fall Guy , especially given Blunt’s background in the action genre, particularly in the 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow .

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Can Finally Let Emily Blunt Be An Action Star Again

Edge of tomorrow 2 can be emily blunt’s full return to the action genre.

A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow has been in development since 2016.

One of Emily Blunt’s most notable action projects is Edge of Tomorrow . Directed by Doug Liman and loosely based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill , by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow starred Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, who is forced to join a landing operation against an alien race. Cage soon finds himself in a time loop, during which he meets Sgt. Rita Vrataski (Blunt), whom he saves and trains with over and over again. A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow has been in development since 2016, but it has come across various obstacles that have kept it from happening.

However, Tom Cruise’s 2024 deal with Warner Bros. has re-sparked hope for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, with Cruise reportedly meeting with Warner’s co-chairpeople to discuss plans for it. Edge of Tomorrow 2 can be the full-on return to the action genre that Emily Blunt deserves , especially after The Fall Guy only gave her two brief action scenes.
