Tour de France rebrands and drops the 'Le'

The cycling race gets a sunny new look.

Le Tour de France is now just Tour de France, according to its new logo. A new bright yellow version of the cycling race's logo was used throughout this year's competition.

And yes, we know, we're a little late to the party. But in all fairness, the event itself unveiled the new logo and identity with little fanfare, and we were too busy watching Wimbledon/reading our guide to logo design to notice.

The new logo (designer unknown) sticks with the same scrawly handwriting font as before. However, there are lots of subtle differences to the previous logo, which was created by Joel Guenoun in 2002 and incorporates a hidden cyclist – one of our favourite logo easter eggs .

The 'o' is now a full circle – which makes sense as it looks more like a wheel than before, the 'u' is less squished in and therefore easier to read, the 'r', or cyclist, is now slightly easier to read too. There are also subtle changes to the letters in the word 'France', which improve legibility overall.

The 'de' in the logo has also moved, making the logo less likely to be read as 'Le de Tour France'. And of course, the 'le' has gone altogether. This is perhaps the most interesting move in terms of the letters, because the competition is still known as Le Tour, even on its own Twitter feed.

Was it because the organisers were fed up of people who don't speak French butchering the 'le'? Or was it simply to make the logo neater and easier to place? The designer has also added a 'TM' to the logo, which feels a little unnecessary.

The refreshed colour palette is also with a mention. The use of bright yellow, although a little garish, does make sense for Tour de France. The yellow jersey (maillot jaune) is worn by the leader of the race at each stage, and by the winner at the end. And while the previous logo was a sort of nod to this, its circle was more of an orangey hue. This logo matches the jersey much more closely.

The dazzling yellow as the wheel/sun of the logo, as well as across the identity in general also reflects the summery feel to the competition, and many will already associate the race with long, hot days.

And while those who weren't keen on the previous logo will have hoped the logo would change more significantly, we're just pleased that the 'hidden rider' is still present. The enlarged 'u' does break this design up a bit, but we think the rider is easier to see now. Although that's perhaps because we can't 'unsee' it.

Taylor Swift debuted a whole new designer wardrobe at the first European Eras Tour show

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour continues to get bigger and better.

During the first show of its European leg — hosted in Nanterre, France, on Thursday — Swift stepped onstage in a new Versace leotard and matching Louboutin boots.

The designer outfit is one of multiple high-end looks Swift has added to her updated show, which now includes songs from her latest album "The Tortured Poets Department."

And each new ensemble is arguably better than the last, with leotards covered in crystals and gowns printed with her song lyrics.

They're outfits fit for a billionaire , which Swift became largely thanks to her massive tour. Here's a look at what she wore.

Taylor Swift stepped onstage in Nanterre, France, wearing an eye-catching orange bodysuit.

Swift has been wearing custom Versace bodysuits during the "Lover" portion of her shows since the start of the Eras Tour.

But her newest version is one of her brightest, covered in orange crystals and large magenta sequins.

She wore the form-fitting piece with knee-high Christian Louboutin boots and a gold Versace necklace.

She later added a sparkling blazer in the same bright shade.

A performance of "The Man" wouldn't be complete without Swift adding a glittering blazer to her outfit.

So, for her first Eras Tour show in France, the 34-year-old debuted a new version of the Versace design: a double-breasted jacket covered in orange sparkles.

She paid homage to her original "Fearless" era in a new dress-style bodysuit.

Fringe-covered minidresses hold a special place in the hearts of longtime Swifties, who saw Swift wear them regularly during her "Fearless" tour in 2009 and 2010.

So, it's fitting that she's consistently brought them back throughout the Eras Tour.

In France, Swift stepped onstage in a black bodysuit covered in silver, gold, and white fringe that made the piece look like a dress. She wore the metallic piece with sparkling Louboutin boots and her signature red lipstick.

It's unclear who designed the newest suit, but fashion house Roberto Cavalli has created Swift's other fringe pieces for the "Fearless" set of the Eras Tour.

Swift nodded to her business dealings during the "Red" set.

Each night of the Eras Tour, Swift begins the "Red" portion of her show wearing a sparkling graphic T-shirt similar to the one she wore in the 2013 music video for "22."

One is a replica that says, "Not a lot going on at the moment," while other versions are more playful with phrases like, "Who's Taylor Swift anyway? Ew."

However, the one she wore in France featured an entirely new message: "This is not Taylor's Version."

The T-shirt references Swift's ongoing project of re-recording her past albums after the original masters were acquired by Scooter Braun and the fans who regularly urge radio stations and casual listeners to switch to "Taylor's Versions" of songs.

The new shirt and others Swift has worn on the Eras Tour were custom-made for her by Ashish Gupta.

Swift combined her "Folklore" and "Evermore" sets and wore a new dress during the merged eras.

Alberta Ferretti has designed all of Swift's "Folklore" dresses throughout the Eras Tour, including the flowing white piece she's seen wearing in her 2023 concert film.

The new version she wore in France on Thursday appears to be the same silhouette as the latter garment but in a new yellow shade.

It features a tiered skirt, flowing long sleeves, and delicate swirls of sparkles and microbeads.

The "1989" portion of her show got an upgrade in the form of a new outfit.

Beaded, two-piece sets from Roberto Cavalli have been Swift's "1989" uniform on the Eras Tour.

But in France, Swift swapped the fringed pieces for a bedazzled pink crop top, a blue ombré skirt, and ankle boots in both colors. The outfit seemingly referenced similar ones Swift wore on her "1989" tour in 2015.

The fashion house is also responsible for this look, with creative director Fausto Puglisi adding a leopard-head embellishment in the middle of its neckline.

Cavalli was widely known as the "Leopard King" before he died in April.

A new "Tortured Poets Department" set called for multiple new outfits, including a dramatic gown.

To match the moody aesthetic of her new album and reference her "Fortnight" music video, Swift donned a custom Vivienne Westwood gown.

It featured a sleeveless, structured bodice, a high-low skirt, and lyrics from "The Tortured Poets Department" printed across it.

Swift wore the dress with white ankle boots from Christian Louboutin.

She later added a military jacket.

While performing "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," Swift and her dancers wore 18th-century-style military jackets in a stark white shade.

The outerwear featured thick sleeves, bodice buttons, and fringed epaulets.

Toward the end of the "Tortured Poets" set, Swift performed an onstage quick change.

In the style of a silent movie, Swift and her dancers acted out a scene in which a heartbroken Swift had to get dressed for a concert.

The two suit-clad performers helped Swift remove her jacket, and she slid off her dress to reveal a black bralette and high-waisted bottoms. They then handed her a gold duster that matched her new dance shoes.

She wore the showgirl-style outfit to perform "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart."

Swift surprised fans with two acoustic songs and a new dress.

Swift has worn custom pieces from Jessica Jones to perform surprise acoustic songs throughout the Eras Tour.

It's unclear if the designer created her latest look, but Swift's pink dress was all new.

It was sleeveless with a wrapped ruched bodice and a high-low skirt.

In true "Midnights" fashion, Swift was bejeweled by the show's end.

Zuhair Murad designed her latest "Midnights" bodysuit. It featured a halter neckline, a diamond chest cutout, smaller slits at the waist, fringe across its hem, and an intricate beaded pattern across the garment.

Swift wore the daring piece with knee-high boots, fishnet tights, and her now-signature garter in a matching blue fabric.

Taylor Swift kicks off European tour in Paris with setlist changes

Taylor Swift fans from North America are going the extra mile — literally.

The pop star kicked off the 18-city European leg of her “Eras Tour” on Thursday in Paris, where she was joined in the París La Défense Arena by thousands of American Swifties who flew overseas to see her.

Thursday’s concert introduced a new setlist that reordered certain eras — including by moving “Red” up to earlier in the night — and combining the “Evermore” and “Folklore” eras, according to social media users who posted from the concert. She also performed songs from “ The Tortured Poets Department ” for the first time .

More than a quarter of tickets for the four Paris shows this weekend were purchased by Americans, according to Frédéric Longuépée, CEO of the París La Défense Arena. Tickets for the venue’s shows all sold in under an hour, he added.

“To the best of my understanding, a lot of Americans chose to come to Paris to attend this show and obviously visit our beautiful city,” said Longuépée, who estimated “something like 25–30%” of the crowd would be Americans, “which is big.”

Kennedy Smith, 21, skipped her college graduation to fly with her mother, Kathleen Smith, 56, from Texas to Paris to attend Swift’s concert instead.

Kathleen Smith said getting to see the singer was “nothing short of a miracle” — the pair stayed up all night in hopes of securing tickets, which cost them around $1,500 each. The two were first in line Wednesday to purchase merchandise at the venue, walking away with two bags full of Swift-themed gear.

Her daughter called the experience the “trip of a lifetime.”

“This is my graduation-from-college gift at Texas A&M,” she said. “And I’ve always wanted to come to Europe. ... And then to be seeing Taylor Swift, it’s just a dream come true.”

Securing tickets for the North American “Eras Tour” initially proved so difficult that the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing criticizing Ticketmaster’s “monopoly” after the platform canceled ticket presales in November 2022 amid overwhelming demand.

Some fans had reported that their invite codes failed to work, while others said they abruptly lost the tickets they had already placed in their cart. The chaos, which garnered a response from Swift herself , led Ticketmaster to offer some scorned fans a second chance at buying tickets.

The saga continued last year when Ticketmaster halted ticket sales for the “Eras Tour” shows in Paris and Lyon, after the website crashed amid technical glitches and hourslong wait times plaguing the more than 700,000 fans in the queue.

Zoe McCormack, a Canadian fan who experienced the Ticketmaster crash , said she managed to get tickets the following week for multiple nights in Paris, where she now lives. She said her non-VIP tickets here cost €190 each, or about $205, making them more affordable than U.S. tickets.

Many tickets for Swift’s shows in Europe cost only a fraction of what tickets cost for her U.S. dates, making them more financially accessible for North American fans who either failed to secure tickets in the U.S. last year or found prices too exorbitant. Some resale tickets sold for tens of thousands of dollars.

“I’m so happy that she came to Paris, especially since she has that ‘Paris’ song. I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I moved to Paris,” McCormack said. “I’m so excited to be here. I can’t believe that it’s already here because we got the tickets almost a year ago. So it’s been a whole year of anticipation, getting the costumes ready, getting our bracelets ready.”

Traveling to see concerts abroad is not a new phenomenon, as buying tickets for concerts in the U.S. has become an increasingly competitive and highly expensive ordeal for fans of popular artists such as Swift, Beyoncé and Olivia Rodrigo . Many American fans of Beyoncé also opted to see her “Renaissance World Tour” in Europe instead .

Swift’s next stop, in Stockholm, expects to see about 10,000 American attendees, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist told The Associated Press . Airlines have also added extra flights from bordering Nordic countries, he added.

The pop star was lauded last year by the U.S. Federal Reserve and several municipal governments for her economic impact as “The Eras Tour” boosted tourism revenue nationwide. Europe may experience the same effect, as Bergqvist said Stockholm’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out for Swift’s three tour dates there, and that “Eras Tour” concertgoers are expected to inject around 500 million Swedish krona, or more than $46 million, into the local economy.

Despite fans' hopes that she would attend, it's official: Taylor Swift skipped the 2024 Met Gala. The star hasn't attended since 2016, and this year proved particularly tough schedule-wise: The Met Gala took place just three days before the European leg of Swift's Eras tour kicks off in Paris.

But as any Swiftie will tell you, Swift can make it anywhere, no matter the flight time: She made it to the Super Bowl to support boyfriend Travis Kelce after finishing up a show in Japan the night before. When Anna Wintour was asked about Swift's potential attendance this year, she played coy, saying, "I hope she comes and enjoys the exhibit.” Page Six also claimed that Swift would be in attendance, claiming "a source tells us that Swift will indeed be attending the lavish event."

But multiple outlets, including People and Us Weekly, reported otherwise: Swift would be "focusing on rehearsals and tour prep," per People.

It's now been eight years since Swift walked the Met's iconic steps. The singer had been a mainstay on the carpet for much of the mid-aughts, attending six times between 2008 and 2016, when she was co-chair. That year's theme was "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology."

She opted for a radical haircut—a bleach blonde shaggy bob—dark-toned makeup, and a snakeskin-printed silver midi dress designed for her by Louis Vuitton for the occasion.

Her night at the 2016 Met Gala foreshadowed the release of her edgiest album to date, Reputation, the following year. Many fans believe that one of the most popular songs from that album, "Getaway Car," is about her experience with Tom Hiddleston inside the museum that night.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 802

As the war enters its 802nd day, these are the main developments.

Emergency workers at an apartment building in Kharkiv that was hit in a Russian attack. The building is four storeys high and painted a peachy pink. The windows have been blown out. The workers are on a crane attached to a white truck parked in front.

Here is the situation on Monday, May 6, 2024.

At least one person was killed and 24 injured in Russian drone and bomb attacks on Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv and the surrounding region. Power cuts were also reported.

Ukraine’s Air Force said that Russia had launched 24 Shahed attack drones and 23 were shot down.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its forces had captured the village of Ocheretyne, in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. The village had a population of about 3,000 people before Russia began its full-scale invasion. There was no comment from Ukrainian officials and no mention of Ocheretyne in the evening report of the Armed Forces General Staff.

Drone footage obtained by The Associated Press news agency showed the village battered by fighting and not a single person in the street. No building in Ocheretyne appeared to have been left untouched by the fighting.

Politics and diplomacy

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in France for a state visit during which French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to press him over the war in Ukraine.

In a video to mark Orthodox Easter, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on his fellow Ukrainians to unite in prayer for each other and the country’s soldiers on the front line. God, he said, has a “Ukrainian flag on his shoulder” and with “such an ally… life will definitely win over death”.
