• अंडमान शब्द मलयाली के हांदुमन से आया है जो हिन्दू देवता हनुमान का परिवर्तित रूप है साथ ही निकोबार-जिसका अर्थ होता है “नग्न लोगों को भूमि”। इसी कारण यहाँ पर रहने पाई जाने वाली आदिवासी जनजातियों के लिए भी यह जाना जाता है।

• अंडमान निकोबार की सैल्युलर जेल या काले पानी की जेल कही जानी वाली यह जगह आज यात्रियों के बीच बड़ी प्रमुख है। सेल्युलर जेल का निर्माण 1896 में प्रारंभ हुआ और 1906 में यह पूरी तरह बनकर तैयार हुई। इसका मुख्य भवन लाल ईंटों से बना है। ये ईंटें बर्मा से लाई गई थीं। 
• इस जेल में 7 शाखाएँ हैं और बीचोंबीच एक टावर है। इस टावर से ही सभी कैदियों पर नजर रखी जाती थी। ऊपर से देखने पर यह साइकल के पहिए की तरह दिखाई देता है। जेल में कुल 698 कोठरियाँ बनी हुईं हैं जिसकी प्रत्येक कोठरी 15×8 फीट की थी।
• आज भी यह जेल भारतीय सैनिकों और स्वतंत्रता सैनानियों को दी गई यातना की कहानी सुनाता है। कितने ही सैनानियों को फाँसी दे दी गई, कितनों को तोप के मुँह बाँध कर उड़ा दिया गया, कितनों को तिल-तिल मारा गया और भूखा रख कर अँधेरी कोठरी में रखा गया। अब यह जगह एक राष्ट्रीय स्मारक के रूप में तब्दील कर दिया गया है।

• अंडमान और निकोबार के वांडूर में महात्मा गांधी मरीन नेशनल पार्क पोर्ट ब्लेयर से 29 कि.मी. की दूरी पर स्थित है। इस नेशनल पार्क में 2 प्रमुख द्वीप हैं: भूलभुलैया द्वीप और ट्विन द्वीप। यह नेशनल पार्क 17 द्वीपों से बना है जो 281.5 वर्ग कि.मी. में फैला है।

Andaman And Nicobar Islands Tourism / अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह एक पर्यावरण अनुकूल सुरक्षित पर्यटक स्‍थल के रूप में प्रसिद्ध है। इसे प्यार से “एमरल्ड आइलैंड्स” (पन्ने जैसे द्वीप) कहा जाता है। इसकी खासियत है इसकी अनुपम सुंदरता और चकित कर देने वाली वनस्पति और जीव-जंतु। यहां कई आकर्षक स्थान, सूरज को चूमते समुद्री तट, मोहक पिकनिक स्पॉट्स और कई अन्य आश्चर्य हैं। पर्यटक यहाँ सेल्‍यूलर जेल, रॉस द्वीप तथा हैवलॉक द्वीप जैसे विशिष्‍ट स्‍थानों को देखना पसंद करते हैं।

अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह – Andaman And Nicobar Islands Tourist Places in Hindi  

अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह भारत की सबसे बड़ी अपतटीय यूनियन टेरेटरी है, जो भारत के दक्षिण में और बंगाल की खाड़ी के बीच है। 8000 वर्ग कि.मी में फैला यह द्वीप अपनी प्राकृतिक सौन्दर्य के कारण कई सैलानियों को अपनी छुट्टियाँ बिताने के लिए मजबूर करता है। अंड़मान और निकोबार दो अलग द्वीप है जो एक दूसरे से केवल 10 डिग्री नोर्थ लेटिटूड़ की दूरी पर है।

पोर्ट ब्लेयर यहाँ कि राजधानी है। यह सब से ज्यादा आबादी वाला शहर भी है। पोर्ट ब्लेयर के हवाई अड्डे से आप किसी अन्य परिवहन साधन द्वारा इन दोनों द्वीपों की सैर कर सकते हैं, इस सैर में सैलानी उत्तर से दक्षिण तक 800 कि.मी पानी के नीचे फैली पर्वत श्रंखला देखेंगे। अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह के द्वीप राज्य के पर्यटन को मजबूती देते हैं। खूबसूरत द्वीपों में जॉली बॉय, हैवलॉक, क्लिन्क, चंथम, वाइपर, रोज, बारेन और रेड स्किन शामिल हैं। जहां प्राचीन काल में बनी जेलें, एक सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी, मध्ययुगीन आरा मिल, बहुरंगी मूंगे और कई अन्य पर्यटन स्थल हैं।

इन द्वीपों की यात्रा करने वाले पर्यटकों के रूकने की आरामदायक व्‍यवस्‍था के लिए पर्यटन विभाग की ओर से द्वीपों के विभिन्‍न भागों में विश्राम गृहों की व्यवस्था है। यहाँ के प्रमुख पर्यटक स्‍थलों में नेतृत्‍व संग्रहालय, समुद्री संग्रहालय, जलक्रीड़ा परिसर, गांधी पार्क उत्तरी खाड़ी (नार्थ बे), वाइपर द्वीप, रॉस आईलैंड, चि‍ड़िया टापू (बर्ड वाचिंग), रेडस्किन आईलैंड, कोर्बिन्‍स कोव बीच तथा नील आईलैंड, हैवलॉक आईलैंड, सिंक्‍बे, लघु अंडमान, डिगलीपुर (रॉस एवं स्मिथ) इत्‍यादि हैं।

अंड़मान और निकोबार केवल अपने सुन्दर समुंद्री तटों और स्कूबा डाइविंग के लिए ही नहीं प्रसिद्ध, बल्कि यहाँ के घने जंगलों में पाए जाने वाले कई प्रजाती के पक्षी और सुन्दर फूल इसे एक उत्तम हनीमून स्थान बनाते हैं। अब तक यहाँ के घने जंगलों में लग-भग 2200 प्रजाती के पेड़-पौधे पाए गएँ हैं, जिन में से 1300 प्रजातियाँ भारत में भी मौजूद नहीं हैं , जिसके कारण अंड़मान-निकोबार द्वीप को एक अलग दर्जा प्राप्त है।

यहाँ सैलानियों को स्कूबा डाइविंग का मौका मिलता है, जिसमें वे पानी के नीचे बसे कई जीव और अन्य प्रकार के पौधे देखते हैं। इस के साथ यहाँ और भी कई सुन्दर पर्यटक स्थल है जिसे देख मनुष्य का मन मंत्रमुग्ध हो जाता है। इसकि इन्ही खूबियों के कारन इसे “इको-फ्रेंडली” स्थान का दर्जा दिया गया है।

अंडमान निकोबार द्वीप समूह प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन – Andaman And Nicobar Islands Tourism in Hindi

1). सेल्‍यूलर जेल.

इस जेल की अंदरूनी बनावट सेल (कोठरी) जैसी है, इसलिए इसे सेल्यूलर जेल कहा गया है। ब्रिटिश शासन द्वारा भारत के स्वतंत्रता सैनानियों पर होने वाले अत्याचारों की मूक गवाह इस जेल की नींव 1897 में रखी गई थी। सेल्यूलर जेल के अंदर 694 कोठरियां हैं। इन कोठरियों को बनाने का उद्देश्य बंदियों को आपसी मेलजोल से रोकना था। ऑक्टोपस की भांति सात शाखाओं में फैली इस विशाल कारागार के अब केवल तीन अंश बचे हैं।

2). कार्बिन कोव्स बीच

हरे-भरे वृक्षों से घिरा यह समुद्र तट अंडमान निकोबार द्वीप समूह की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर का एक मनोरम स्थान है। यहाँ समुद्र में पानी के नीचे की दुनिया को देखा जा सकता है। यहाँ से सूर्यास्त का आकर्षक रूप देखा जा सकता है। यह समुद्र तट अपनी प्राकृतिक सुन्दरता के लिए प्रसिद्ध है।

3). रॉस द्वीप

रॉस द्वीप 200 एकड़ में फैला हुआ है। फीनिक्स उपसागर से नाव के द्वारा रॉस द्वीप पहुंचा जा सकता है। कभी यह ग्रेट अंडमानी आदिवासियों का अधिवास था। अंग्रेजी शासनकाल के दौरान अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीपसमूह का मुख्यालय रॉस द्वीप में था। अंग्रेजी शासनकाल के दौरान इसे ‘पूरब का पेरिस’ कहते थे, लेकिन 1941 में आए भूकंप ने इसे बुरी तरह उजाड़ दिया। अब यहाँ कुछ अवशेष ही बचे हैं, लेकिन पर्यटकों की दिलचस्पी इनमें भी रहती है।

4). पिपोघाट फार्म

80 एकड में फैला पिपोघाट फार्म दुर्लभ प्रजातियों के पेड़-पौधों और जीव- जन्तुओं के लिए जाना जाता है। यहाँ एशिया का सबसे प्राचीन लकड़ी को चीरने की मशीन ‘छातास सा मिल’ है।

5). बैरन द्वीप

बैरन द्वीपबंगाल की खाड़ी में स्थित है। इसका निर्माण लावा शंकु तथा राख के ढेर से हुआ है। यह अण्डमान एवं निकोबार द्वीप समूह में स्थित है।

6). डिगलीपुर

डिगलीपुर में स्टीमर से मायाबन्दर जाते समय मैंग्रोव खाड़ी के बीचों-बीच से यात्रा करने का अवसर उपलब्ध होता है। डिगलीपुर प्रकृति प्रेमियों को बहुत पसंद आता है। यह स्थान अपने संतरों, चावलों और समुद्री जीवन के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। डिगलीपुर पर अण्डमान की एकमात्र कल्पांग नदी बहती है।

7). वाइपर द्वीप

वाइपर द्वीप अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीपसमूह में स्थित है। ब्रिटिश शासन में ग़ुलाम भारत से लाए गए बंदियों को पोर्ट ब्लेयर के पास वाइपर द्वीप में उतारा जाता था। अब यह पर्यटन स्थल के रूप में विकसित हो गया है।

8). सिंक व रडिस्किन द्वीप

यहाँ के स्वच्छ और निर्मल पानी का सौंदर्य पर्यटकों का मन मोह लेता है। इन द्वीपों में तैरती हुई डाल्फिन मछलियों के झुंड दिखायी देते हैं। शीशे की तरह साफ़ पानी के नीचे जलीय पेड़-पौधे व रंगीन मछलियों को तैरते देखना पर्यटकों के लिए अविस्मरणीय अनुभव है।

9). माउण्ट हैरियट

माउण्ट हैरियट निकोबार द्वीपसमूह की सबसे ऊँची चोटी है। माउण्ट हैरियट पोर्ट ब्लेयर से सड़क द्वारा 55 व नाव द्वारा 15 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह चोटी सदाबहार वनों से आच्छादित है। वर्तमान में माउण्ट हैरियट 46.62 वर्ग किमी क्षेत्र में नेशनल पार्क के रूप में विस्तृत है और नवम्बर 1996 में इसे आरक्षित वन के रूप में चिह्नित किया गया।

10). महात्मा गांधी मरीन नेशनल पार्क

अंडमान के मनोरम दृश्यों में शामिल है- महात्मा गांधी मरीन नेशनल पार्क। यह नेशनल पार्क वांडूर में है। यह खुले समुद्र और संकरी खाड़ी के साथ ही 15 द्वीपों से मिलकर बना है। पर्यटक इस जगह आते हैं दुर्लभ मूंगों की खूबसूरती देखने और अंडमान के समुद्री जीवों की आकर्षक जिंदगी देखने। स्कूबा डाइविंग और स्नोर्कलिंग भी यहां की जा सकती है। इससे यह नेशनल पार्क अंडमान के मनोरम दृश्यों का स्थायी भाव बन चुका है।

कटचाल को पहले तिहन्यू के तौर पर जाना जाता था। यह 174.4 वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैला है। निकोबार का कटचाल द्वीप केंद्रशासित प्रदेश के 572 द्वीपों में से एक है। बेमिसाल खूबसूरती की वजह से, यह द्वीप दुनियाभर के पर्यटकों में खासा लोकप्रिय है।

कैसे पहुंचे

अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह बंगाल की खाड़ी में स्थित है। इस वजह से कोई भी जहाज पर सवार होकर अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप पहुंच सकता है। पानी जहाज से पोर्ट ब्लेयर पहुंचने में करीब तीन दिन लगते हैं। अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह पहुंचने के लिए राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर का एयरपोर्ट सबसे अच्छा रास्ता साबित होगा। चेन्नई, कोलकाता और पोर्ट ब्लेयर के बीच नियमित उड़ानें हैं। जेट एयरवेज, इंडियन एयरलाइंस और एयर डेक्कन की नियमित उड़ानें यहां पहुंचती हैं।

अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह की यात्रा का सबसे अच्छा वक्त दिसंबर और अप्रैल के बीच के महीने हैं।

अंडमान निकोबार में स्थित इस द्वीप का नाम ब्रिटिश जनरल सर हेनरी हैवलॉक के नाम पर रखा गया है। यह अंडमान निकोबार के प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक है, जहां पर हर वर्ष लाखों की संख्या में पर्यटक आते हैं।

इस द्वीप पर स्थित राधानगर समुद्र तट सन 2004 में टाइम पत्रिका द्वारा एशिया का सबसे खूबसूरत समुद्री तट घोषित किया गया। हैवलॉक द्वीप पोर्ट ब्लेयर से 55 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित है। यहां पहुँचने के लिए यातायात की अच्छी सुविधा उपलब्ध है।

एतिहासिक सेलुलर जेल, पोर्ट ब्लेयर- Cellular Jail

अंडमान निकोबार की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर में बनी हुई सेलुलर जेल यहां पर दी जाने वाली ‘काला पानी’ की सजा के लिए जानी जाती है। इसका निर्माण काल 1896 में प्रारंभ हुआ था, जो 1906 में पूर्ण हुआ था। यह जेल सात शाखाओं में फैली हुई है, जिनमें कुल 694 कमरे हैं। इस जेल के अंदर एक संग्रहालय भी बना हुआ है, जहां पर पुराने अस्त्र-शस्त्र देखने को मिलता है।

इस जेल तक पहुंचने के लिए काफी कठिन मार्ग को तय करना पड़ता है।

महात्मा गांधी मरीन नेशनल पार्क – Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

यह अंडमान निकोबार द्वीप समूह का एक प्रमुख राष्ट्रीय उद्यान है, जो यहां की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर से 29 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह पिकनिक के दृष्टि से काफी महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है, यहां की प्राकृतिक सुंदरता पर्यटकों को अपनी तरफ आकर्षित करती है।

• समय-सारणी- यह पार्क 24 घंटे खुला रहता है। परंतु नौका विहार का समय 8:00 AM से 10:30 AM तक का समय है।

चिड़िया टापू – Chidiya Tapu

चिड़िया टापू को ‘सूर्यास्त पॉइंट’ तथा बर्थ आईलैंड के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह अंडमान निकोबार द्वीपसमूह की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर से 18 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित। इस टापू की प्राकृतिक सुंदरता देखने योग्य है।

कार्बिन-कोव्स समुद्रतट – Carbyn Cove Beach

• रॉस द्वीप (अंडमान) – Ross Island

यह द्वीप अंडमान निकोबार की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर से 2 किलोमीटर दूर पूर्व दिशा में स्थित है। इस द्वीप का ऐतिहासिक महत्व यह है कि यहां पर ब्रिटिश राज्य से लेकर भारत के स्वतंत्र होने तक के कई ऐतिहासिक धरोहर मौजूद है।

इतिहास पसंद करने वाले सैनानियों के बीच यह द्वीप काफी लोकप्रिय है। यहां पर ब्रिटिश काल के कई ऐसी इमारतें हैं, जो हालांकि अब खंडहर में तब्दील हो गई है परंतु इन्हें देखने के लिए दूर-दूर से पर्यटक आते हैं। इस द्वीप के नजदीक ही स्मित द्वीप भी स्थित है। राजधानी के निकट होने की वजह से यहां पहुँचने के लिए यातायात की अच्छी सुविधा उपलब्ध है।

वाइपर द्वीप – Viper Island

रॉस द्वीप की भांति ही वाइपर द्वीप का भी ऐतिहासिक महत्व है। है कि ब्रिटिश शासन में जब गुलामों को भारत लाया जाता था तो उन्हें इसी द्वीप पर उतारा जाता था। पोर्ट ब्लेयर से इस द्वीप की दूरी 4 किलोमीटर है। वर्तमान में यह द्वीप अंडमान निकोबार के प्रसिद्ध पिकनिक स्थल के रूप में जाना जाता है। अंडमान आने वाले पर्यटकों के बीच में यह द्वीप काफी पॉपुलर है।

बेरन द्वीप – Barren Island

यह द्वीप अंडमान निकोबार दीप समूह की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर से 138 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर बंगाल की खाड़ी में स्थित है। इस द्वीप के बारे में बताया जाता है कि यह द्वीप भारत ही नहीं अपितु दक्षिण एशिया का में एकमात्र ऐसा देश है, जहां पर सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी पाया जाता है। 3 किलोमीटर के क्षेत्र में फैला हुआ यह द्वीप यहां पाए जाने वाले सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी की वजह से प्रसिद्ध है।

अपने नाम की ही भांति यह ज्वालामुखी भी बंजर है, क्योंकि यहां पर मनुष्य के वास नही है।

• डिगलीपुर – Diglipur

यह अंडमान निकोबार दीप समूह के उत्तर में स्थित  सबसे बड़ा शहर है। इस शहर के बीचोबीच से अंडमान की एकमात्र नदी कल्पोंग नदी बहती है। इसके साथ ही अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह का सबसे ऊंचा पहाड़ सैंडल पर्वत इस शहर से मात्र 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है।

• सिंक व रेडस्किन द्वीप – Red Skin Island

अंडमान निकोबार की राजधानी पोर्ट ब्लेयर में स्थित है। इस द्वीप पर आने वाले पर्यटकों को स्वच्छ पानी लुभाता है। इस द्वीप का पानी इतना स्वच्छ होता है कि उससे साफ तौर पर पानी के अंदर के जीव तथा पौधों को आसानी पूर्वक देखा जा सकता है।

यह अंडमान सागर में स्थित ज्वालामुखी द्वीप है। इस द्वीप की मुख्य चोटी समुद्र स्तर से 710 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। इस द्वीप पर पाया जाना जाने वाला ज्वालामुखी प्रसुप्त अवस्था में पाया जाता है।

• रुतलैंड द्वीप, अंडमान और निकोबार – Rutland Island

यह द्वीप अंडमान निकोबार दीप समूह के अंडमान द्वीप समूह पर स्थित है। रतलाम टू के बारे में बताया जाता है कि यहां पर पहले जंगली समुदाय पाया जाता था जो सन 1907 में विलुप्त हो गया। यह द्वीप अंडमान निकोबार के प्रसिद्ध द्वीपों में से एक है।

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of nearly 600 islands in the Bay of Bengal. Although part of India politically, they are closer to Indonesia and Myanmar than to the Indian mainland. They were just north of the epicentre of the earthquake in 2004 and were the site of dozens of aftershocks. The Nicobars were badly hit by the resulting tsunami , while the Andamans escaped with a few bruises.

Understand [ edit ]

1,400 km from mainland India and 1,000 km from Thailand, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the most remote spots on the planet. The original inhabitants are various aboriginal tribes, ethnically Melanesian , who exist more or less out of the mainstream. There are some tribes, most notably the Sentinelese, who have had almost no contact with the rest of the world. Of nearly 600 islands, only 9 are open to foreign tourists, and all of these are in the Andamans.

The islands exist in India's popular consciousness mainly because they were used as a penal colony during British rule to imprison rebels and freedom fighters, in addition to hardened criminals. The majority of people living on the islands are descendants of migrants from the mainland. Some of them descended from the prisoners.

During World War II , the Andamans were the only part of India that was, briefly, occupied by the Japanese. While notionally handed over to Subhash Chandra Bose's 'Free India", in practice the Japanese held the reins of power. The territory was run brutally — suspected resistance members were tortured and executed, and when food started to run out towards the end of the war, people were deported to uninhabited islands to fend for themselves.

Climate [ edit ]

Mid-January to mid-May has the best weather, and often the best diving conditions. The days are mostly sunny at this time of year, and the sea is sometimes flat enough to reflect the clouds. The monsoon usually hits around late May and lasts until the end of July. This is probably the worst time to visit the islands as there are strong winds, frequent rain and low visibility underwater. From August to November there are some occasional showers and slightly rougher seas but diving can still be great during this period of the year. The weather often takes a turn for the worse from the month of December to early January.

Geography [ edit ]

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands stretch out almost 500 km in length, with the Andamans in the north and the Nicobars in the south. The main island, aptly known as Great Andaman , is divided into three parts: North Andaman, Middle Andaman and South Andaman. The capital Port Blair is on South Andaman.

The main spoken languages are Hindi , Tamil and Bengali . Telugu and English are widely understood by the inhabitants of the islands that are open to tourism. Nicobarese is the mother tongue of the Nicobar Islands and is understood by the tribes.

Foreigners can hire a guide to communicate with local people. Most of the guides work as volunteers and have been serving tourists for many years.

Get in [ edit ]

Non-Indians need a Restricted Area Permit to visit the islands, but these are now issued on arrival at the Port Blair airport. If you plan to arrive by sea, you'll need to arrange your permit before arrival, either in Chennai or when applying for your Indian visa. Visitors usually receive a 30-day permit, although some travellers arriving without a confirmed flight back have only received a 15-day permit. Ask for 30 days on your application; if you write in your return flight date, your permit will be issued to end on that date, which will cause unnecessary pain if you choose to extend your stay or, worse yet, get unexpectedly delayed by weather.

Permits can be extended by 15 days in Port Blair , for a maximum single stay of 45 days, although this extension is granted only in, to quote the local police guidelines, "deserving cases". You must then leave the islands and can return after 72 hours. The permit is checked when arriving at most islands, checking into hotels and booking ferries, and must be surrendered when you leave the islands, so don't lose it.

The permit allows overnight stays in the following locations: South Andaman Island, Middle Andaman Island and Little Andaman Island (except tribal reserves), Neil Island , Havelock Island , Long Island , Diglipur , Baratang , North Passage and islands in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (excluding Boat Hobday Island, Twin Island, Tarmugli Island, Malay Island and Pluto Island). Overnight stays in the park are with permission only.

The permit allows for day-trips to: South Cinque Island , Ross Island , Narcondam Island , Interview Island, Brother Island, Sister Island and Barren Island which can be visited on board vessels only with landing possible.

Indian nationals do not require a permit to visit the Andamans. However, permits are required to visit the Nicobar Islands and other tribal areas, which are rarely given. Application on an official form should be addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman District, Port Blair.

By plane [ edit ]

The primary way to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by air is from the Indian mainland to Port Blair . There are talks of opening up flights from Bangkok , which could drastically change the situation in the islands, but as of 2022 these remain just plans. Flights can fill up in peak season and immigration doesn't look kindly on people arriving without confirmed flights back, so book a return ticket and change the flight date if you decide to stay longer.

The main airport of the islands, Veer Savarkar International Airport ( IXZ  IATA ) in Port Blair, is probably one of the most quaint and idyllic airports in India. There is a scenic view point where the whole airport can be seen. There are no night flights as the airport is handed over to the Indian Air Force after 15:00. As of 2019, it has only flights from elsewhere in India.

By boat [ edit ]

It's possible to take a ship from Kolkata (c. 60 hr), Chennai or Visakhapatnam (almost 4 days) to Port Blair. It is less expensive at only ₹1961 (as of November 2011). Facilities are basic, though and many prefer to sleep on the deck rather than in the cramped bunks. The ferries can take up to five days to arrive depending on weather and various other variables. This can be quite frustrating for many. The Bay of Bengal is not calm, and those who get seasickness easily should consider flying, instead.

Between islands [ edit ]

The Andaman and Nicobar is a vast archipelago, and aside from some erratic, infrequent and expensive helicopter shuttles and a pricey seaplane service to Havelock Island , passenger ferries [dead link] are the only way to move between the islands.

All passenger transport in the islands is handled by the government-run Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), which also runs the ferries back to the mainland. The DSS operates two kinds of vessels: small "tourist" ferries, and larger "local" ferries. Despite the names, fares are more or less identical on both, at ₹150–200 one way from Port Blair to Havelock Island .

Tourist ferries seat about 100 people in padded bucket seats in a notionally air-conditioned cabin (which can still get sweltering hot). While you can access the top deck, there are no seats, shade or shelter outside. These boats are faster and seaworthy, but top-heavy, and sway quite a bit in high seas. There is no canteen on board, so bring snacks or at least drinks.

Local ferries are considerably larger, seating up to 400 in two levels: padded "bunk" or "luxury" seating upstairs, and plain old benches on the "deck" downstairs. Neither class is air-conditioned, but ocean breezes keep temperatures tolerable, and a canteen dishes out chai, samosas and bottled water. Due to their larger size, they are more stable in heavy seas, but take about twice as long as tourist ferries to get anywhere.

An air-con catamaran ferry or private cruise from Port Blair to Havelock is also available. Tickets are ₹1171, 1289 or 1643 depending upon the class of seating (Premium, Deluxe, Royal) can be booked online in advance. Government ferry booking needs to be done via dedicated ticket booking window at the jetty in Port Blair.

During the high season demand often exceeds supply, so book your tickets at least one day in advance, either through a travel agent or directly at Port Blair's harbour. The ferry ticket booking system has become computerised. This means you can book any ferry from any jetty - i.e. Rangat to Havelock from the Diglipur ferry jetty. Services may be changed or cancelled at short notice due to inclement weather, notably cyclones in the Bay of Bengal.

Within the islands [ edit ]

• Auto-rickshaws are available in Port Blair and on Havelock Island .
• Taxis are available in Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island. All kinds of vehicles except for high end luxury vehicles are available to rent in the islands. Cab bookings can be done inside the airport on arrival from dedicated travel counter approved by the Airport Authority of India.
• Scooters and motorcycles used to be available for rent in Port Blair and Havelock. In Havelock Island two-wheelers are the best option to get around, especially to Radhanagar beach. 2 wheeler rental will cost ₹400-500 per day excluding petrol and security deposit.

The only place with historical attractions of note is Port Blair , which houses British-era colonial buildings, including the notorious Cellular Jail, and a few World War II bunkers dating from the brief Japanese occupation.

• Scan corals reefs in glass bottom boats off Jolly Buoy Island, at the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor, 29 km from Port Blair.
• See the only active volcano in India on Barren Island, but make sure it's smoking before you start on the overnight boat journey. The island is protected by the Indian Navy, and it is not possible to visit the Barren Islands.
• Don't take the Andaman Trunk Road. The ride is long, and the journey that takes you through some gorgeous reserve forests and up to Maya Bunder and beyond.
• Spot some sea cows and moon-bathe with plankton in a phosphorescent sea.
• Sea walking is a popular activity that allows visitors to explore the beautiful coral reefs and marine life of the Andaman Islands. The activity involves walking on the sea floor while wearing a special helmet that supplies air. This allows visitors to see the coral reefs and marine life up close without the need for diving or snorkelling.

Scuba diving [ edit ]

Havelock Island is the main dive destination, but the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park has reopened. South Cinque Island is another possibility, enquire at Anugama Resort at Wandoor.

The best dive sites in the Andamans are in remote locations and are impossible to get without a private yacht charter. The dive sites around Havelock are actually very ordinary by Andamans standards. The best diving in the Andamans is: Barren Island (an active volcano), Narcondam Island (an extinct volcano), Invisible Bank (an extensive seamount about 160 km southeast of Port Blair) and 4 spectacular but unnamed sea mounts off the west coast. There is also a good wreck dive just south of North Brother Island. There are a small number of companies that operate live aboard diving and adventure charters in the Andaman Islands. Be aware that many companies that advertise Andaman Islands trips have never been there before.

Snorkelling [ edit ]

Snorkelling is a fun, popular activity done at North Bay, MuaTerra Beach and Havelock Island . The equipment is cheap, and can be bought or rented.

• Surfing was possible on Little Andaman Island, but the island was devastated in the 2004 tsunami.

In Port Blair, you will find main shopping centre offering variety of seashell and coral souvenirs. Aberdeen Bazaar is considered as a prime commercial centre which houses various government approved shops such as Khadi Udyog outlets and Cottage Industries Emporium.

Apart from the main shopping centre, some other shopping places to explore include Prem Nagar, Machi Lane, Delanipur, Goalghar, Phoenix Bay and Junglighat. All these spots are within the range of 3-4 km from Aberdeen Bazar.

The local furniture, made from local wood and mother of pearl jewellery, is well-known. Handicrafts made from cane, ashtrays walking sticks and some eye catching lamp shades created from coconut shell are ideal best souvenirs. Other popular souvenirs are:

• Dried coral crafts
• Bamboo crafts
• Wood crafts made of paduk
• Beaded jewellery
• Mother of pearl artefacts like key chains and some other decorative items

There are a plethora of cafés and restaurants, private and government shops.

Eat [ edit ]

Seafood is the order of the day. From upscale restaurants in Port Blair to local dhabas on Havelock , fish abounds. Be prepared to pay a little more for good fish and seafood dishes than for standard Indian food, but it's well worth it. Basic Indian food is also available, and as cheap as on the mainland in most of the small dhabas. Resort restaurants on Havelock can also whip up a limited set of more or less Western dishes, but the resort restaurants are pretty expensive by Indian standards.

Drink [ edit ]

• Fresh coconuts are popular and widely available.
• Alcohol is available in some restaurants and at 'English Beer & Wine Shops' in Port Blair and on Havelock Island . The beers will not be cold except in local bars.
• Local bars are dingy and poorly lit, giving them a very eerie feel.
• There is no pub culture or nightclubs.

There are a variety of hotels around the islands which are run by Andaman & Nicobar Tourism. You can book all A&N tourism hotels in person at A&N tourism in Port Blair , by phone on 03192 232694, or by email on [email protected] (but they do not have access to email). Hours are 8:30-11AM, 2-4PM.

Stay safe [ edit ]

The Andamans are a fairly safe destination. Tourism is still in its early stages which makes it almost hassle free. That said, you should keep your wits about you as you would anywhere.

The Andaman Islands are, however, the home of some of the last uncontacted tribes of Eurasia. These tribes have resisted becoming a part of the globally connected world for a long time. The most famous example is the Sentinelese tribe, whose home is North Sentinel Island. They maintain their sovereignty over the island, and reject contact with the outside world. They have killed people who tried to contact them, and may shoot arrows at approaching boats.

Saltwater crocodiles are found throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and frequently attack people. While saltwater crocodiles generally remain within the rivers and coastal mangrove swamps, they do occasionally travel within the open ocean where most human encounters occur. The main crocodile populations are around Little Andaman Island (Northern and Western sides), Interview Island and in the narrow straits that separate the main islands MacPhearson Strait, Andaman Strait, Homfrey Strait and Austen Strait. Crocodiles also inhabit many of the Nicobar Islands.

Andaman and Nicobar are malarial , although generally not more than mainland India.

The Indian country code (91) applies, and the area code for the entire Andamans is (3192). So, from outside India, you dial +91 3192xxxxxx. Within India, you dial 03192xxxxxx (by mobile phone you can use the international format also locally).

Mobile phone coverage used to be poor on many islands but is now much improved. State-owned BSNL, and private operators Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are the operators providing mobile services there. Landlines are frequent in Port Blair but more erratic as you move around the islands.

Internet access is slow but tolerable in Port Blair. BSNL EVDO sticks on CDMA technology works best with speed up to 1 Mbit/s. BSNL 3G gives a speed of around 100 kbit/s and ADSL is un-serviceable most of the time. Private players like Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vi offer internet access through GPRS & EDGE which is pathetically slow. A project for the interconnectivity of the islands with an underwater international Chennai-Singapore marine cable is under construction.

The mobile data network is weak whichever provider you choose to use. Free Wi-Fi is available in big hotels and restaurants.

Respect [ edit ]

Tourism is still relatively new in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and as such the visitor has a special responsibility in guiding its development. Remember that this is India — local women are very conservative in their attire, and if you'd like to show sensitivity to their feelings, consider dressing conservatively yourself.

Alcohol should be consumed on the premises of your hotel only. The quiet and peacefulness of the islands are one of their best assets; help to maintain these.

घूमने के शौकीनों के लिए जनवरी से मार्च के बीच का समय सबसे बेहतरीन होता है। चूँकि यह द्वीपसमूह बंगाल की खाड़ी में है इसलिए यहां पर साल भर रुक-रुक कर बारिश होती रहती है। सिर्फ साल के शुरूआती 3 महीनो में बारिश में कमी दर्ज की जाती है। जनवरी से मार्च महीने के दौरान यहाँ का अधिकतम तापमान 28 से 33 डिग्री जबकि न्यूनतम तापमान 20 से 24 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक पहुँच जाता है। जिससे यहां आये सैलानी सुहावने मौसम के बीच इस द्वीप पर मौजूद हर एक नज़ारे का पूरा लुत्फ़ उठा पाते हैं।

स्काइमेट के मौसम विशेषज्ञों के अनुसार, अप्रैल माह की शुरुआत के साथ ही यहां मौसम में आये बदलाव के कारण बारिश की गतिविधियां भी बढ़ जाती हैं।

इस द्वीपसमूह पर मई से लेकर सितम्बर महीने तक रहने वाले मॉनसून सीजन में 2200 मिलीमीटर तक बारिश होती है। जबकि अक्टूबर माह में बारिश घट जाती है और अक्टूबर में करीब 300 मिलीमीटर बारिश होती है। दिसंबर में बारिश काफी कम हो जाती है। इसके बावजूद 100 मिलीमीटर बारिश होती है। तापमान की बात करें तो मई से लेकर दिसंबर के बीच इस द्वीपसमूह का अधिकतम तापमान 28 से 32 डिग्री जबकि न्यूनतम तापमान 21 से 25 डिग्री के बीच रहता है।

यह द्वीपसमूह सैलानियों को साल के हर महीने घूमने लायक मौसम प्रदान करता है। इसीलिए खिली धूप, रेत, और सुहावने मौसम के साथ समुद्री किनारों के शौकीनों के लिए यह जगह जन्नत से कम नहीं है।

Jet Ski Ride

Jet Ski is one of the most adventurous water sports activity. Most of the tourist use to have enjoyed this water sport. This water activity adventure is available at Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex.

A nominal rate is charged for this sport and after dressing up in a proper suit and heading the instructor’s advice you are ready to zip around on a Jet Ski. Do not ignore the advice and try not to get carried away by the high speed and excitement. A Jet Ski ride is safe and is handled by a certified rider and utmost care is taken regarding the safety of the tourist by the way of providing life Jackets. Remember to wear a life jacket and that it is the best enjoyed on a good day. During the monsoon, rains, and storms it can be a dangerous thing to go Jet Skiing. The Jet Ski is capable of reaching very high speeds and thus it is advisable that you go along with an instructor if you are trying this for the first time. Out of all the adventure activity in Andaman, Jet Skiing definitely stands out. However, the sport is best to enjoy during good weather only. Jet Skies are not difficult to drive, however, it needs proper caution from the driver. The thrill of cruising through the sea on a Jet Ski, with wind hitting you hard on your face, is truly mesmerizing for every adventure seeker, whether teenager or adult.

Seakart is a state of the art water sports craft. Bearing resemblance to go-kart, the Seakart is 3.5 m long and 2 m wide and offers great stability and comfort to the patrons onboard.

With a steering wheel, a paddle accelerator and push button engine on/off, the Seakart is extremely easy to drive. A Seakart can seat 3 people. One seat will be occupied by licensed instructor while the other two can be tourists. The licensed instructor will serve as a guide and supervisor whilst you drive your own Seakart. At Seakart Adventure Andamans, you get 30 minutes of excursion time starting from Corbyn’s Cove Beach till near Ross Island & back. A long route gives you and your companion ample time to drive, enjoy and explore the magnificent coasts of Port Blair. Dos and Don’ts: 1. Participate only after a thorough reading about the activity. Refrain from participation if you are apprehensive. 2. All incoming passengers above 02 years of age including partially and fully vaccinated arriving at VSI Airport, Port Blair have to mandatorily carry RT-PCR negative test report issued from an ICMR recognized laboratory within 48 hours before commencement of journey.

Remote and still a challenge to reach, the dreamy Andamans lie geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India (1370km to the west), and are populated by both South and Southeast Asian settlers, and (sadly threatened) indigenous tribal communities. Together with the off-limits Nicobar Islands (south of the Andamans), the archipelago comprises 572 islands, with just a handful accessible to visitors. How to get to the Andaman Islands

There are no international flights to the Andamans, so you’re looking at a domestic flight into Port Blair from mainland-India cities such as Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , Delhi or Bengaluru . It's also possible to reach the islands via the original route: by sea. A few ferries rattle across the Bay of Bengal to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam , though timings are unreliable and distances long.

The requirement for foreigners to have a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the Andamans was overturned in 2018. Now travellers can visit 29 inhabited and 11 uninhabited islands without permits, including Havelock Island, Neil Island, Long Island, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman (though always excluding tribal areas).

Best time to visit the Andaman Islands

December to March are the top months for warm, sunny weather, good transport links and the best diving conditions, and you’re also likely to spot turtles nesting on Middle and North Andaman. The shoulder months of October, November, April and May are less reliable weather-wise, though accommodation prices drop, crowds are down and there’s consequently less strain on the natural environment.

Everyone’s first (ahem) port of call is the bustling provincial capital Port Blair , on South Andaman. While in town sorting out travel arrangements, it’s worth exploring the chilling British-built 1906 Cellular Jail National Memorial , where political prisoners were once held, and the jungle-wreathed Victorian British–style ruins on Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the islands’ colonial-era administrative headquarters until 1941. But the best of this region is out in the wild: the 280 sq km Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a popular day trip from Port Blair (permit required). 

Where to stay: Andaman Homestay , Port Vista and Lalaji Bay View are reliable budget-to-midrange picks. Towards the upper end, go for Fortune Resort Bay Island or Sinclairs Bayview , both with sea panoramas.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

When people rave about the Andamans, they’re often talking about dazzling Havelock Island , the most developed of the islands. Silky beaches backed by thick rainforest melt into sparkling turquoise water, and the diving and snorkelling here rival the very best in South Asia. Established operators such as Dive India , Ocean Tribe and Barefoot Scuba lead you through underwater depths to spot wrecks, sharks, rays, turtles, schools of snapper and more.

Post-diving, laze away your days catching the sunrise at Kalapathar , swimming at sheltered Neil’s Cove and strolling along fabulous Radhanagar , one of Asia’s most spectacular beaches, before settling in for home-cooked Indian-international dinners, perhaps at Full Moon Café or Anju-Coco Resto . For something more active, hike into the lushly forested interior and to Elephant Beach , or join a kayaking expedition through the mangroves.

Where to stay: Eco-conscious British-run Jalakara offers boutique seclusion, a seductive infinity pool and seven uniquely designed rooms amid betel-nut trees and banana palms. Just back from Radhanagar’s sands, ecofriendly island original Barefoot at Havelock has graceful bamboo, timber and tented cottages. Budget-friendly haunts include Emerald Gecko’s beachside huts; Flying Elephant , with its bungalows overlooking electric-green rice paddies; and backpacker favourite Green Imperial . Most dive schools have simple accommodation.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

A few notches down in busyness from its sister Havelock just north across the water, Neil Island is a delightfully easy-going, pancake-flat world of rice fields, palm trees, rocky beaches, a small bazaar and a sleepy jetty that leaps into action when ferries arrive. Budget travellers head here for the rustic beach-hut vibe that originally lured people to Havelock (though mainstream tourism is on the rise on Neil, too). While Neil’s beaches aren’t fantastic for swimming, there’s excellent diving courtesy of pioneering schools like India Scuba Explorers and Dive India (you might even spot a dugong!). 

Where to stay: Fuss-free bungalows such as Emerald Gecko , Breakwater Beach Resort and Kalapani epitomise all that’s wonderful and laid-back about Neil. Waterside SeaShell is arguably the island’s most upmarket stay.

Little Andaman

The kind of deliciously isolated place mentioned in hushed whispers among enamoured travellers, Little Andaman is the southernmost island that it's possible to visit in the Andamans. It's bordered by powder-soft, sun-dusted white beaches, tangles of mangroves and tumbling teal waves that make for some of India’s most terrific surf, especially at sweeping Butler Bay and from February to April. Around 130km south of Port Blair, Little Andaman suffered serious casualties during the 2004 tsunami, but has since bounced back and now ranks among the most enticing destinations in the Andamans. Around 25 sq km of the island is a protected, off-limits tribal reserve for the indigenous Onge people.

Where to stay: Most accommodation is of the budget beach cottage genre; try Hawva Beach Resort or Ieshika Resort, just back from Netaji Nagar beach. Many guest houses rent surfboards.

Middle & North Andaman

Few travellers tackle the long journey north from Port Blair to Middle and North Andaman, but venture here and you’ll uncover outstanding snorkelling, pristine honey-gold beaches, impenetrable primeval jungle, a world-renowned turtle-nesting site, a string of eerie limestone caves, a smattering of serene offshore islets, and much more.

Kalipur beach  (just outside the Andamans’ second-largest settlement, Diglipur, in far North Andaman) is believed to be the only place in the world where leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles nest on the same coastal stretch (mid-December to March or April). There is simple accommodation at Kalipur, from where hikes up the Andamans’ highest mountain, 732m-tall Saddle Peak , can also be arranged.

In the remote area around Mayabunder, on Middle Andaman, you can stay amid glinting rice fields with a local conservationist family at self-sufficient Ko Hee Homestay , heading out on wildlife-spotting treks and learning about traditional crafts. Or get away from it all with a spell on quiet, untouristed Long Island, just off Middle Andaman, where bamboo-clad Blue Planet is the only place to stay.

Getting around

Once you’ve made it to Port Blair, the only way to reach most of the other islands is by ferry. Government ferry tickets are released just three days ahead (it can be a scramble at ticket offices!); tickets aren’t available online and you’ll need to ask locally for schedules (there’s an information office at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty). Buses trundle north from Port Blair through Middle Andaman and on to Diglipur on North Andaman – cheap, though time-consuming!

Thankfully, Havelock and Neil are also linked to Port Blair and each other by private ferries operated by Makruzz , Green Ocean , Sea Link and ITT Majestic ; these usually open for bookings (including online) at least a month ahead, making them the easiest option for travellers. On most islands, hiring your own bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore.

Visiting the islands responsibly

The Andamans’ fragile ecosystems and small, isolated communities remain seriously at risk from tourism (and other) development. Divers and snorkellers can help by choosing environmentally responsible operators, ensuring reefs aren’t damaged (by flippers, or by touching marine life etc), while more general practices include minimising single-use plastics, clearing any rubbish encountered, not removing shells from beaches, and supporting hotels, shops and restaurants committed to a green ethos. If you’re looking to donate your time, the NGO Reef Watch Marine Conservation accepts volunteers. 

Meanwhile, for both safety and dignity, the islands’ indigenous tribal communities live in regions off-limits to visitors. Heartbreakingly, many groups have become extinct in the last century, and there are serious repercussions for anyone caught trying to access these restricted areas. 

It’s also worth noting there have been several fatal crocodile attacks in the Andamans in recent years: check locally as to where it’s safe to swim and keep out of the water at dawn and dusk.

This show is rooted in the history of this isle and jail as if it were narrated by the oldest “Peepal Tree,” which is still surviving in the jail.

The Cellular Jail stands as a silent witness to the horrible sufferings of nationalists and freedom fighters imprisoned in its chambers. They even had to give up their precious lives as victims of the British and Japanese governments’ oppression and brutality. The show imparts a feeling of respect and pride and is a must-visit on the very first night!

2) Chidiyatapu – Enjoy a mesmerizing sunset

Chidiya Tapu is a calm small location great for bird watching and spending a few hours among the grandeur of nature, and this is one of the top tourist destinations in Andaman. It is home to hundreds of kinds of birds.

The sunsets here are breathtaking and should not be missed. The location is 25 kilometres from Port Blair’s city centre and is easily accessible by road. Summer is the best time to visit Chidiyatapu since the sky is clear.

3) Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

A boat ride from Mahatma Gandhi marine national reserve has to be taken to reach this place. Various coral reefs, starfish, sea anemone can be found when you visit here.

12) Baratang Island – Explore Limestone Caves Here

Explore the tropical side of the Andaman and Nicobar Island, Baratang Island in the middle Andaman offers some most unique experience in the Andaman archipelago. Here you pass through Jarawa tribal reserve and mangrove forest to reach the limestone caves . An awesome experience, if I have to say. The journey starts early around 3 AM and it is worth the effort to experience something unique.

Baratang is well-known for its natural attractions, which range from spectacular Limestone Caves to lush mangrove streams. There are tidal swamp woods and Mud Volcanoes , which are modest yet interesting. It is the first entrance north of the capital city, lying between the Middle and Southern Andaman Islands. Because of its proximity to Port Blair (around 100 kilometres), it is a popular one-day excursion destination.

13) Radhanagar Beach – Havelock Island- Andaman’s pride

Havelock is undoubtedly the prime destination for water sports and beautiful beaches within the Andamans. Havelock is home to several beaches including the Radhanagar Beach – This beach, ranked as being one of the best in Asia, is a must-see due to its natural beauty. Go to Radhanagar beach to spend the evening watching sunset as you’ve never seen before.

Radhanagar beach has been awarded with the prestigious Blue Flag Certification.

14) Kalapathar Beach – See the actual turquoise

This is the third most visited place on Havelock Island . The beach here gives an actual feel of the real turquoise color. A curvy road by the sea takes you to this place. Good for sunrise and photography, Kalapathar beach offers you a good experience and we recommend you add this place to your bucket list. Try to get to this beach in the early hours to enjoy a pleasant view.

15) Vijaynagar beach

A beach after Radhanagar beach where you can actually swim and enjoy. See, the fact is many beaches at Havelock Island are not suitable for swimming because of the rocks. Now, Vijaynagar beach offers a good experience of the sunrise along with a magical beach where you can actually swim. This beach is en route to Kalapathar beach.

16) Visit Laxmanpur Beach

The most famous place on Neil Island to experience a magical sunset, Laxmanpur beach . This beach us shaped like a triangle offers a good sunset view from its tip. The usual sunset time in Neil Island is around 5:30 PM so travellers can reach here at 4:45 PM and then walk to the tip of the beach to see the sunset. This beach is not recommended for swimming and water sports.

17) Enjoy water sports at Bharatpur Beach

Bharatpur beach is the hub for all water sports activities at Neil Island. Here at this beach, you can indulge in Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Boat Ride, Jet Ski ride and banana boat ride. At Bharatpur beach you can also indulge in boat scuba diving. We recommend visiting this place on the next day of the tour at Neil Island so that you get ample time to enjoy the beach and its water activities.

18) Visit the Natural Rock formation

Now, when you visit Neil Island. You have to visit this place which is loved by tourists. Small pits are formed around the natural rock formation which holds a variety of fishes that attracts many tourists.  This place is accessible during low tide and a small walk is required to reach this place.

19) Visit Diglipur    

Diglipur, the northernmost town and a wildlife lover’s favourite destination to visit in Andaman, is host to Andaman’s highest peak in the south Andaman, the Saddle Peak. Saddle peak is 732 meters high and takes atleast half a day to reach to its peak.

Diglipur Island is one of the main tourist attractions in Andaman and gives convenient access to a variety of guests’ needs, from lodging to sightseeing. Trekking the Saddle peak, witnessing the turtle nesting in the nights or The mud volcano sites are all attention-worthy locations in Diglipur city.

20)  Ross and Smith Island- The Twin Island

A 50-meter-long sandbank connects these lovely twin islands. During high tide, this silky white sand bar disappears into the ocean and rises while during low tide. The calm waters are extremely clear, and the unspoiled pristine coasts are among the most beautiful on the islands.

Unlike Ross Island, which has dense forest cover, Smith Island has the most facilities, such as large bamboo huts with plenty of shelters, changing rooms, and restrooms. The beaches’ beauty is wonderful, and it is strongly advised that you visit them at least once while in Andaman. A cab from Port Blair to Diglipur has to be hired and then a boat has to be hired to reach Ross and Smith Island.

21) Visit Turtle nesting ground – Diglipur

Turtle nesting grounds in Diglipur are pretty famous among tourists who prefer an offbeat experience. Different kind of sea turtles yearly comes to various beaches around Diglipur to lay eggs. The season from February onwards is very important if you want to experience such an event. Guides are available at Diglipur to help you with seeing these turtles laying its egg. The most important beaches for such an experience are Kalipur and Ramnagar beaches.

22) Visit Long Island

Long Island also serves as a gateway to numerous unspoilt beaches, including Lalaji Bay Beach , Guitar Island , and Merk Bay Beach on North Passage Island. The magnificent and clean virgin beaches, and the lush tropical woodlands, make it an excellent mix for natural rehabilitation, and it is the centrepiece of the Andamans. 23) Visit Barren Island- An only active volcano

Barren Island is the place to go if you want to witness something distinctive and heart-stopping at the same time. There’s an active volcano nearby! The island is 35 km away from the city of Port Blair. It is also regarded as one of the top scuba locations in Andaman. To visit Barren Island you will have to charter a boat from Havelock Island and then travel to this beautiful place.

The cost of the entire charter ranges from 120000 – 150000, because of its cost sometimes travelers let go a visit to this place.

24) Visit Rangat 

Rangat’s picturesque splendor is ideal for flora and animal enthusiasts. It is located on Middle Andaman Island and is well-known for Cutbert Bay Beach , which serves as a turtle breeding place. Olive ridley turtles, green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, and leatherback turtles are among them.  

On the shore, the Cuthbert Bay Wildlife Sanctuary offers an unobstructed glimpse of freshly hatched turtles rushing towards the sea. Visitors can also contribute to conservation efforts by releasing turtle nestlings. On this island, spend your days in the lap of nature, surrounded by fantastic ocean waves.

At Rangat you can visit Dhanninalah Mangrove Walkway which offers very unique experience to tourists. Here you can walk on a walkway that is surrounded by mangroves and it maintained by Andaman Forest department.

With an estimated cost of about ₹44,000 Crores ICTP will play a crucial for the economic and infrastructural development of the Region

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal visited the site of the proposed International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP), at Galathea Bay, Great Nicobar Island today and reviewed its progress with the senior officials. As envisaged in the Maritime India vision 2030 as well as one of the key projects in the Amrit kaal Vision 2047, the proposed International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP) project has reached significant milestones, solidifying its position as a transformative initiative with a total estimated cost of about ₹44,000 Crores. The project is strategically important for the country and crucial for the economic and infrastructural development of the entire region, has garnered key approvals and support from government bodies.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) granted environmental clearance on November 11, 2022. Additionally, stage 1 forest clearance has been obtained. Also, the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has granted "In-Principle" approval for the holistic development of the Great Nicobar Island and the DPR of the ICTP project is under finalization. It is planned to invited the tenders for the construction of the first phase of the project in early next year, after due approvals and concurrences.

The development of this Mega Container Terminal is a part of the holistic development of Great Nicobar Island. The project focuses on three key drivers, which can result in making it a leading container transshipment port, i.e. strategic location in terms of proximity (40 nautical miles) with the International shipping trade route, availability of natural water depth of over 20m and carrying capacity of transshipment cargo from all the Ports in the proximity including Indian Ports.

After his aerial visit of the site, Shri Sonowal also interacted with the local residents and representatives of all the stakeholders at the island and had a detailed review meeting of the proposed methodology of the implementation of the project and its timelines.

After reviewing the project, the Minister said, “This project will be a major landmark in developing India to become a self-assured and self-reliant Nation and will support the economic development of the country. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is continuously striving to fulfill the grand vision of making a New India as envisaged by our visionary Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji.”

The flagship program Sagarmala under MoPSW aims to modernize, mechanize, and enhance capacity of existing ports, making them more efficient and environment friendly. Upgrading & unlocking capacity at major & non-major ports is critical for supporting economic activities in the hinterland since ports serve as a vital link between sea and land transit. In the last 9 years under Port modernization, 94 Projects worth Rs. 31,129 Cr. have been completed, resulting in capacity addition of more than 230 MTPA. In terms of engaging the private sector, 21 projects worth more than Rs. 23,000 Cr. have been successfully operationalized under PPP, since 2014, indicating the considerable progress made in leveraging public-private partnerships.

India has a significant potential to set-up mega ports and compete with global ports. There are four key intervention areas highlighted under Maritime India Vision 2030, which include capacity augmentation; developing world-class Mega Ports; development of transshipment hubs in Southern India; and infrastructure modernization. Currently, India has 5 Major Ports and 2 Non-Major Ports with greater than 100 MTPA capacities. With this, there is a significant opportunity for India to set up Mega Ports and compete with global ports. Based on detailed evaluation across key criteria for Mega Ports and emerging growth potential of clusters, 3 Mega Ports - Vadhavan-JNPT Cluster, Paradip Port, and Deendayal Port have been identified to be developed into Mega Ports with >300 M TPA capacity.

The infrastructure initiatives marked in Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 focus upon development of four port clusters with capacity of >300 MTPA and 2 port clusters with capacity >500 MTPA . In addition to creating port clusters around the existing major ports, 2 new major ports – Vadhavan and Galathea Bay port are envisaged to be developed.

Vadhavan has a natural draft of about 20 meter and is therefore well suited for accommodating larger ships. Development of this port will enable cargo container vessels of 16,000-25,000 TEUs capacity. Similarly, proposed Galathea Bay Port, due to its strategic location in proximity to the East-West world-shipping corridor, is suitable to attract both gateway and transshipped cargo.

Ports in the country would also need to have higher draft available to accommodate larger vessels. Out of five ports from eight namely DPA, Vadhavan, VoCPA, Galathea Bay and PPA to have draft in the range of 18 meters to 23 meters by 2030. Further, 3 ports NMPA, CoPA and JNPA would be drafted in the range of 20 meters to 23 meters by 2047 in order to align with global standards.

Currently, nearly 75% of India’s transshipped cargo is handled at ports outside India. Colombo, Singapore and Klang handle more than 85% of this cargo with 45% of this cargo handled at Colombo Port. The strategic location of Galathea Bay is a huge advantage to EXIM trade as it lies on International shipping route. With the development of ICTP at Galathea Bay, Indian ports will be able to attract more transshipment cargo. Also, developing Galathea Bay Transshipment Port will accrue significant benefits such as forex savings, foreign direct investment, increased economic activity at other Indian Ports, enhanced logistics infrastructure and thus, efficiencies, employment generation, and increased revenue share.

The proposed facility is envisaged to be developed in four phases with Phase 1 is proposed to be commissioned in the year 2028 with handling capacity of ~ 4 Million TEUs, increasing to 16 Million TEUs in the ultimate stage of development by 2058. The estimated cost for Phase 1 of the proposed transshipment port is around INR 19,000+ crores, which includes the construction of breakwaters, dredging, reclamation, berths, storage areas, building and utilities, procurement and installation of equipment, and development of port colony with core infrastructure is going to be developed with the government support.

Shri Sonowal also visited the Indira Point, the southernmost point of India's territory at Great Nicobar Island of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to explore its tourism potential. After the visit, he has directed the concerned officials to explore the possibility of developing the Indira Point area as a tourism destination and develop required tourism amenities and facilities for the same.

During this visit, Shri Sonowal also reviewed the Campbell Bay Port project progress. This project is being constructed with a cost of about Rs.17 crores. It is to be noted that the existing jetty at Campbell bay is inadequate for berthing of larger size vessels. Considering this extension of the jetty for 50m was taken up to facilitate safe berthing of bigger vessels. On completion of the project, vessels of 150mtr long will be able to berth which will provide more passenger and cargo movement between Great Nicobar and other islands. This extension also will facilitate double berthing, which will add for double berthing which will add the port capacity. Considering the future development of Great Nicobar Island, and expected increase in tourists and traders, this jetty will be useful to capture the traffic growth of the island.
