Everything You Need to Know About Karimunjawa Islands, Indonesia

avatar-name

Farah Fazanna  •  Sep 15, 2023

Indonesia, with its vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands, offers a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural richness. Nestled within this vast expanse of paradise lies the Karimunjawa Islands, a hidden gem that promises pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and unforgettable experiences. Let's take you on a journey to explore everything you need to know about the Karimunjawa Islands, from how to get there and what to do, to the best time to visit and how to get around once you arrive.

Getting There: By Airplane or Ferry

The Karimunjawa Islands are located in the Java Sea, approximately 80 kilometres northwest of Jepara, Central Java. To reach this island paradise, you have two main options: by airplane or by ferry.

  • By Airplane: If you're short on time and prefer a quicker way to reach the islands, flying is your best bet. Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, the capital city of Central Java, serves as the primary gateway. From Semarang, you can take a domestic flight to Dewandaru Airport (also known as Dewandaru Kura-Kura Airport) on Karimunjawa Island. Several airlines operate flights to this charming destination, making it a convenient choice for travellers. However, do note that it can get quite pricey flying into the islands!
  • By Ferry: Traveling by ferry offers a more budget-friendly option, although it takes longer. The ferry departs from Jepara, and the journey takes approximately 4-5 hours. Ferries operate daily, but schedules can be subject to change, so it's a good idea to check in advance and arrive early to secure your tickets. The slow pace of the ferry ride allows you to soak in the stunning ocean views and build anticipation for your arrival on the islands.

What to Do on Karimunjawa Islands

  • Beach Bliss: Karimunjawa is renowned for its unspoiled beaches with powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Whether you're a beach bum or an adventure seeker, there's a beach for you. Notable beaches include Pantai Batu Topeng, Pantai Tanjung Gelam, and Pantai Legon Lele.
  • Snorkelling and Diving: The islands are a haven for marine life enthusiasts. The vibrant coral reefs teeming with a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, making snorkelling and diving a must-do activity. Dive sites like Menjangan Kecil and Karang Copong offer thrilling underwater experiences. A snorkelling trip would cost you around 200,000 IDR per person.
  • Island Hopping: Karimunjawa consists of 27 islands, each with its own unique charm. Take a boat tour to explore these hidden treasures. The nearby Cemara Kecil Island is famous for its mangrove forest and resident bats.
  • Sunset Spectacle: Watching the sunset from Bukit Love (Love Hill) is an unforgettable experience. The panoramic views of the surrounding islands and the horizon painted in shades of orange and pink create a magical moment.
  • Turtles and Sharks: Visit the Karimunjawa Shark Conservation and Turtle Hatchery to learn about conservation efforts and have the opportunity to swim with gentle sharks and release baby turtles into the sea.

Getting Around the Island

Getting around Karimunjawa is relatively easy and can be an adventure in itself. You can rent a scooter or bicycle to explore the main island. You can rent a scooter for 75,000 IDR and it's about 12,000 per litre for fuel.

For island hopping and snorkelling trips, chartering a local boat is the way to go. If you're not comfortable navigating the waters yourself, you can join organised tours offered by local operators.

When Is the Best Time to Go?

The best time to visit Karimunjawa Islands is during the dry season, which typically falls between April and September. During this period, the weather is sunny, and the seas are calm, making it ideal for water activities like snorkelling and diving. Keep in mind that July and August are peak tourist months, so if you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting in April, May, or September.

Karimunjawa Islands in Indonesia are a tropical paradise waiting to be discovered. Whether you're seeking relaxation on pristine beaches, thrilling underwater adventures, or a taste of local culture, this archipelago has it all. With various transportation options, it's easier than ever to access this hidden gem and create lasting memories in one of Indonesia's most enchanting destinations. So, pack your bags, book your tickets, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey to Karimunjawa!

Top 10 Best Things To Do In Karimunjawa, Indonesia

March 3, 2020 By //  by  Michael Leave a Comment

Want a great island break from Indonesian city life? Put Karimunjawa on your Indonesian bucket list right now! We spent 5 days here after visiting Halef’s family in Bandung and we discovered that there are so many awesome things to do in Karimunjawa that we had trouble narrowing it down to just our top 10.

A wooden boat in glassy water just off an island near Karimunjawa

If you haven’t heard of Karimunjawa (or Karimun Jawa or Karimun Java) then you’re not alone. The vast majority of people who visit Indonesia come for the beaches and partying on Bali. But we think you really should consider this group of islands off the northern coast of Java.

Where is Karimunjawa anyway?

Karimunjawa is an archipelago about 80 kilometers north of Jepara in Central Java. It’s most well-known for the Karimunjawa National Park – a marine conservation area that just happened to be the main reason we went there.

Google map of the position of Karimunjawa above the island of Java in about the center.

Karimunjawa National Park is famous for mangrove forests, beaches, and coral reefs. To get here, you can either fly (on Friday, Sunday, or Monday) or take the Karimunjawa Ferry from Jepara .

10 best things to do in Karimunjawa

The best reason to visit Karimunjawa, at least for us, was to just get away from the city – specifically the traffic in Bandung, where we happened to be at the time we decided to go. But there are a lot more reasons to visit than just get away from the craziness of the city.

In our opinion, these are some of the best things to do in Karimunjawa:

1. Kemojan Mangrove Forest

travel buddies karimunjawa

Did you know that Indonesia is the home to 25% of all the world’s mangroves? One-quarter! That’s insane! Mangroves are often called the nurseries of the ocean because a lot of fish species come to them to lay their eggs.

They also protect delicate ecosystems from storm surges.

Map of the Karimunjawa mangrove forest trails on a large sign.

Here you can walk along a huge boardwalk through a mangrove forest. These boardwalks go deep into the mangrove forests which span over 200 hectares.

The boardwalk route is about 2 kilometers, so be sure to have water with you when you do it. In addition to that, if it’s wet, the boardwalk can be slippery. Wear good shoes. Flip-flops don’t fit the bill.

I was wearing flip flops. Trust me on that one!

Michael in a selfie along the boardwalk in the Karimunjawa mangrove forest.

Mosquitoes in the mangrove forest: Yes, you’ll probably notice the mosquitoes here, so be sure to apply mosquito repellant before you go. We always recommend one with a high DEET content, like this at 40% . By the way, studies show that after 30%, it doesn’t get much better anyway. So if you find one for 30%+, you’re good.

2. Bukit Love

The Karimunjawa LOVE sign from a distance with the ocean in the background.

OK, we admit that this is a bit of a tourist trap. I’m not sure if I would put much effort into going to Bukit Love if I didn’t have to. That said, (Bukit) Love Hill is one of the most popular things to do here. And it’s the most popular Instagram site in Karimunjawa.

If you need a better reason to visit Bukit Love, come during the early evening. Love Hill in Karimunjawa offers the perfect vantage point to catch a view of an equally perfect sunset.

Michael with a stupid selfie in front of a large sign that reads LOVE.

It’s only Rp. 10,000 to enter, so why not? At least get that shameless selfie.

And even if you don’t care about sunset photos or selfies, you’re covered. Bukit Love has a bar and restaurant, so relax with a beer or coffee while everyone else takes their selfies!

3. Karimunjawa Square / Alon-Alon Night Market

One of the best things to do in karimunjawa is to visit the night market, or alon alon. Halef is sitting next to the silver sign at Alon Alon.

If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, then Alon-Alon is one of the best things to do in Karimunjawa at night. There are over a dozen stalls at the Karimunjawa Alon-Alon Night Market. They open up at around 6 pm and they sell everything from grilled fresh fish to grilled corn and sate ayam to pisang goreng (deep-fried bananas in batter).

Our favorite stall was that of a man on the corner making sate ayam . We were here for a few days and I went there three times – so good!

There are very few tables here though. Buy your food and sit on a mat in the field and eat with everyone else! Or sit at one of the tables by the stalls. You’ll take off your shoes and sit on the ground. This way of eating is called lesehan .

A line of food stalls on the square in Karimunjawa, including one that serves authentic Indonesian sate.

There is a small downside. Sometimes the grills get quite smoky. You might end up smelling of grilled fish smoke by the end of the night if you stay here too long.

Nothing a quick shower and a change of clothing can’t fix though.

Before you go: Here’s a quick introduction to Indonesian food !

4. Scuba diving in Karimunjawa

Not gonna lie. If there’s scuba diving to be done anywhere in the world, even if it’s mediocre, I’m probably going to do it. Fortunately, mediocre doesn’t describe scuba diving in Karimunjawa.

Michael wearing scuba gear with lots of colorful coral varieties in the background

What I loved most about the scuba diving in Karimunjawa is how healthy the corals are. You probably won’t see many big animals here, but you’ll see very colorful coral, plentiful schooling fish, and several varieties of nudibranchs.

We did three great dives in Karimunjawa with Salma Dive Center . They were great. Not only that, but the owner (well, we think he was the owner) is a member of the Coast Guard and one of the people who makes decisions on ferry schedules. He can help you with the unpredictable ferry in Karimunjawa.

5. Snorkeling in Karimunjawa

Michael snorkeling in Karimunjawa.

If scuba diving is not your thing – or if you just haven’t taken the time to get certified – the second-best way to see Karimunjawa underwater is with a mask and a snorkel. Karimunjawa has some of the best snorkeling in Indonesia. In many areas, corals sit just 3 or 4 meters beneath the surface, making the coral reefs here very accessible to snorkelers.

Remember, look but don’t touch. Prolonged exposure to human skin can kill a coral and some of the more sensitive ones can die on contact.

Michael holding a bottle of Burn Out sunscreen. We love this stuff.

Sunscreen and snorkeling: Obviously, you don’t want to be as red as a lobster after a day in the water. One of the downsides of many sunscreens is that they contain ingredients that kill coral systems. Be sure to wear what’s called “reef-safe” sunscreen. We use Burnout Ocean-tested sunscreen and recommend it to everyone.

6. Island hopping and beaches

travel buddies karimunjawa

I admit that, initially, I wasn’t excited about this. Island-hopping sounds like an overly touristy thing to do and I just wasn’t looking forward to it. But after island-hopping in Karimunjawa, I can understand why so many tourists recommend it!

Karimunjawa is home to plenty of nearby islands, so there’s a lot to hop!

A Karimunjawa beach from a distance with white sand lined with coconut trees

People who visit love to hire a boat for the day and just skip from island to island to soak up the sun and relax for the day.

You can join a boat tour for anywhere from Rp. 150,000 to well over Rp. 2,500,000 depending on what you want to do and how private you want it to be. Here’s an example of a company that does such things (we have no experience with this company, but we just wanted to provide an example to get you started).

Our Karimunjawa island-hopping boat, which we hired privately cost Rp. 1,020,000. That included the fee to hire the boat (from 8 am to 5 pm), snorkeling equipment, a guide, a visit to a shark sanctuary and turtle conservancy, and 3-4 different islands. We split that cost among 4 people. In other words, about $18 US each for an entire day.

Although it sounds touristy, it was one of our best days in Kawimunjawa. Highly recommended.

Karimunjawa Island Hopping recommendation: We hired a young guy named Pak Rofik (Mr. Rofik) to take us island hopping. He came to our hotel, sat with us, and we worked to customize our day. Pak Rofik was terrific. We also ended up renting his motorcycle and hiring him to drive us to the airport. You can reach Pak Rofik at +62-852-9071-4146.

7. Karimunjawa Turtle Conservancy

Michael and Halef in front of a sign that says "Taman Nasional Kawrimunjawa Konservasi Penyu" - which means, Karimunjawa National Park Turtle Conservancy

This was a bit of a wonderful surprise, at least to us, because we didn’t even know it existed before we went there. We stopped by the Kawimunjawa Turtle Conservancy while we were on our island-hopping excursion (above). Normally, it’s not a side trip that’s included, but we were offered the option and took it – because, well, it’s turtles!

When you exit the boat and walk up the dock, you’ll see a kind of net basket on the side of the dock that includes hundreds of baby and juvenile turtles.

The person leading our boat tour even took a couple of the babies out of the water to let us hold them.

Michael holding a baby hawksbill sea turtle in the palm of his hand

I’m no turtle expert, but I’m pretty sure this would be against the rules in the U.S. and other countries. But the turtles were handled very carefully by everyone.

To visit the conservancy (which is really just a beach with not much to see besides the turtles themselves) costs about Rp. 20,000 (about $1.50 US).

8. Pasar Karimunjawa

The front entrance of Pasar Karimunjawa

If you want to visit Pasar Karimunjawa – or Karimunjawa Market – you’ll have to get up early. While there may be people there at other times of the day, the market generally is open from 5 am to 7 am each morning.

People gather here to sell mostly fresh fish, but you’ll also find everything from children’s snacks to clothing.

Two women cleaning herbs at the Pasar Karimunjawa

The prices at the market are very inexpensive, as the majority of the people who shop here are local. This is definitely not a tourist market, so you’ll be able to find bargains here that you might not find at some of the touristy places around town.

9. Masjid Baitul Muttaqin

The bright green minaret of Masjid Baitul Muttaqin in Karimunjawa rises above a coconut tree.

Normally, I wouldn’t put a place of worship on a list of things to do (unless it was somewhere famous for them like Vatican City, Jerusalem, or Mecca or something).

It’s not because I have anything against them. As I often tell people, I’d much rather go to see a beautiful place of worship than to hang out at a theme park any day of the week!

It’s just that churches, mosques, and temples aren’t really places you can spend much time at. They’re usually a quick hit and leave.

The entrance to Masjid Baitul Muttaqinin Karimunjawa

But Masjid Baitul Muttaqin (sometimes referred to as Masjid Agung Karimunjawa) is really a beautiful complex. The unique green minaret on this mosque towers over this modest island. This mosque on Karimunjawa really stands out from everything else.

10. Rent a scooter and just drive

Michael wearing a blue raincoat next to a honda scooter.

In all honesty, Karimunjawa is a beautiful, quiet place, and one of the best things to do in Karimunjawa for me was to rent a scooter and just explore the island by myself. Currently, scooter rental prices in Kawimunjawa are about Rp. 75,000 per day.

Most of the best things to do in Karimunjawa involve boats and food, but renting a scooter in Karimunjawa is a sure way to be independent while you’re there.

Just remember, they drive on the left here!

Relax, you’re in Karimunjawa!

Seriously, you don’t have to go all the way to Bali to experience beautiful beaches and amazing scenery. Karimunjawa doesn’t see anywhere close to the number of tourists as Bali does, and it doesn’t experience the rowdiness and partying you get there either.

If you want “drinking and partying,” this probably isn’t the place to do it.

Your vacation in Karimunjawa is going to be peaceful and relaxing.

Final note: Avoid shark farms in Karimunjawa

Because we had heard so much about it, we decided to visit a place in Karimunjawa that houses sharks. I already knew that I was likely to recommend against visiting, but I decided to spend the $1.50 to check it out and be sure that I knew what I was recommending against – just to be sure.

This is what it looks like – nothing more than a pen with a bunch of blacktip reef sharks, a few white tips, and a guitarfish. No reefs, no other fish. Nothing.

10-12 black tip reef sharks swimming in a pen in Karimunjawa

Sharks are meant to live freely in the ocean. I think that’s obvious. But just in case anyone believes I am against captivity in all cases, that’s not true. I’m not against the proper display of sharks in aquariums (I was an enthusiastic volunteer diver at Georgia Aquarium for a couple of years). But if you’re going to house sharks, it’s got to be in a place where the sharks (or any marine animal) gets proper veterinary care. Water quality needs to be monitored constantly. Dietary needs need to be met.

As much as it might “look” like the sharks are OK in these places (and it kinda does, to be honest), they are not. They don’t have any of the proper care that they need. Basically, exploiting sharks is just a way for locals to make money.

This is money they need, by the way. But capturing and displaying sharks in an unregulated, unprofessional environment is just not the way to do it.

Please stay away. Looks are deceiving. Just because a place looks well-maintained does not mean the sharks are OK.

Insider’s Guide to Indonesia: Top Tips for Karimunjawa (Java)

Karimunjawa. Or, as it’s known, Indonesia’s Maldives. We’ve never seen water as crystal-clear and turquoise-blue as in the archipelago of the Karimunjawa National Park , anywhere else in Indonesia. Located about 80 kilometers off the coast of Java, you’ll find yourself in a true island paradise, a world away from mass tourism.

We’d go as far as to say: Karimunjawa is still something of a hidden gem in Indonesia . Probably because getting there takes quite a bit of time and a little preparation.

Planning a trip to Karimunjawa? Epic! It really is such a gem of a place. In the following article, you’ll find our tips for your journey to this island paradise.

Karimunjawa Travel Guide

1. Karimunjawa: A Glimpse into the Dream Islands & Overview

The Karimunjawa Islands are located about 80 kilometers north of Java’s coast in the Java Sea. This archipelago consists of 27 tropical islands , but only a few of them are inhabited.

The main island of the Karimunjawa archipelago is Karimunjawa (or Karimun), which is connected to the second-largest island, Kemujan , by a bridge. When people talk about Karimunjawa, they’re referring to both the main island and the entire group of islands.

On the Karimunjawa Islands, you can expect a lot of local flair , lush vegetation with mangroves and palms, and, of course, endless beaches and ocean. The most beautiful beaches aren’t so much on the main island, but rather on the tiny, mostly uninhabited islands. Here, you can look forward to a Caribbean vibe with white sandy beaches and light blue water – absolute dream!

Who Are the Karimunjawa Islands Suitable For?

  • For Explorers: Karimunjawa isn’t particularly easy to reach, nor does it offer a luxury vacation. Those traveling to Karimunjawa should be ready for a bit of an adventure.
  • For Adventurous Families: We’ve also met families with children and can imagine that it would be quite an experience for the little ones on the island.
  • For Island Lovers: You’re a long way from the mainland and surrounded by the ocean. A bit of a preference for beaches and saltwater would be good if you’re planning to travel to Karimunjawa.

In Karimunjawa, there are neither parties, shopping malls, nor luxury resorts – fortunately! Instead, you can look forward to plenty of local flair . Karimunjawa remains very authentic and the island group is especially popular with Indonesian tourists as a weekend getaway.

Travel Guide for Indonesia: Our Tip

Personally, we never travel without a printed guidebook. In Asia, we’ve got a clear favourite: Lonly Planet. We really like the Lonly Planet travel guides. They’re well-researched and perfect for independent travellers.

The Lonly Planet guidebook for Indonesia has been our go-to for several trips. It’s (as expected from LP) very detailed and filled with super tips. Karimunjawa also gets a few pages of coverage in this guidebook – impressive considering its remoteness. We definitely recommend it.

You can buy the guidebook here: Lonly Planet Indonesia (November 2021 Edition)

Best Time of Year for Karimunjawa

In Indonesia, there are two seasons: dry and rainy. Generally, the dry season lasts from April to October in Indonesia, and that’s the period we’d recommend for a trip to Karimunjawa. While the dry season doesn’t guarantee good weather (it can still rain!), the weather tends to be more stable.

During the rainy season, especially from December to February , the Java Sea can get extremely rough!! It’s not uncommon for boat services to be suspended for days due to strong waves. Besides, experiencing a tropical island in bad weather isn’t much fun.

Indonesia Travel Guide

2. Getting to Karimunjawa: Our Tips

The most common way to reach Karimunjawa is by boat from the port town of Jepara. Since the boats leave early in the morning, you’ll likely need to spend a night in Jepara. Additionally, since 2019, there’s been a flight option from Semarang to Karimunjawa.

By Boat from Jepara: Ferry vs. Speedboat

So there are two ports with boats to Karimunjawa: Jepara and Semarang. However, boat service from Semarang has been gradually stopped or paused, making Jepara the first choice to travel to Karimunjawa. As of April 2020, there are no boats from Semarang!

There are two types of boats: the slower, large ferry (Siginjai) and the speedboat (Express Boat Bahari). We’ve taken the slow ferry on the way there and the speedboat on the way back, so we can share our experiences with both.

Important: Whichever boat you choose, departure times can always change! Therefore, keep in touch with the respective company or contact your accommodation.

Option 1: With the Slow Ferry (Siginjai)

The local ferry is definitely the more relaxed way to reach Karimunjawa by water. The ferry doesn’t operate daily, but only on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and only once a day, early in the morning.

Important: Check the schedule before your trip! It can change depending on the season. There’s a website, but it’s only in Indonesian: Local Ferry .

We personally felt safer on the ferry than on the speedboat. Sure, the huge ship sways quite a bit, but it’s bearable. If you get seasick easily, you should definitely stock up on the appropriate remedies – many people around us were sick.

The departure time was officially around 6:45 AM for us, but from experience, we can confirm that the ferry often leaves earlier if it’s full. We were able to reserve our ticket through our wonderful accommodation (Ayu Hotel – more on that later). Otherwise, you have to buy your ticket on the morning of the crossing directly at the harbor. The ticket counter opens at 5 AM. In high season, you should be there no later than 5 AM.

The return trip from Karimunjawa to Jepara leaves every Tuesday and Sunday morning (around 7 AM) or Thursday and Friday at 1:30 PM. (Again, important: Check the schedule in advance to make sure the times are correct!)

Duration : About 5 hours Price : 92,500 IDR per person for Economy Class or 111,000 IDR for VIP Class + a small harbour fee

Option 2: With the Speedboat (Express Boat Bahari)

The faster option is a crossing with the Fast Boat. This operates four times a week from Jepara: Monday, Tuesday, Friday (each at 9 AM), and Saturday at 11 AM. More information on times can be found on the official website, which is unfortunately only available in Indonesian: Express Boat Bahari .

On the day of our crossing, there was quite high wave action , so we don’t exactly have the fondest memeories of the speedboat journey.

Heads up: if you get seasick easily, be sure to be prepared. Nice bonus: Plastic bags are included in your ticket and are distributed by the cabin crew in advance.

You can also book tickets for the Fast Boat in advance on this website: Direct Ferries .

Price : 200,000 IDR per person for Executive Class or 230,000 IDR for VIP Class Duration : About 2 hours

Important: Sea Conditions in the Java Sea

Before crossing to Karimunjawa, always keep an eye on the wave conditions. The Java Sea can be quite rough – for example, on our return trip, we were really shaken up. In case of doubt, it’s best to contact your accommodation in Karimunjawa.

You can view the forecast here: Wave Forecast (The page is only available in Indonesian – scroll to the section “Prakiraan Tinggi Gelombang” (= “Wave Height Forecast” in English).

By Plane to Karimunjawa

Karimunjawa has a tiny airport, Dewadaru Airport . Until the pandemic, it was served three times a week by Wings Air (a subsidiary of Lion Air) from Semarang: Monday, Friday, and Sunday.

The airport in Karimunjawa is located in the northern part of Kemujan Island, which, as mentioned, is connected by a bridge to the main island of Karimunjawa. It takes about 30 minutes by car from the airport to the main town in the south of the island. We recommend arranging transport to your accommodation in advance, as there is no public bus and taxis are extremely rare.

Currently (as of Autumn 2023), there are NO flights to Karimunjawa! Should Wings Air resume operations, you can book your ticket on the Lion Air website.

3. Getting Around in Karimunjawa

In Karimunjawa, there are no public transport options ! So, you’ll need a moped . You can rent one for 75,000 IDR per day (or more precisely, per 24 hours). And just a heads-up, there are no helmets available: “No helmet, no police, no problem”, as our guesthouse owner put it.

The roads can be a bit rough in certain places, but there’s hardly any traffic (apart from the neighbor’s kids on their bikes or mopeds). We usually don’t recommend learning to ride a moped in Southeast Asia for beginners, but in Karimunjawa, the roads are really quiet.

The biggest hazards are the potholes and gravel roads, but with a bit of practice, it’s manageable. Remember, traffic drives on the left in Indonesia. But don’t worry: You’ll get used to it pretty quickly.

Karimunjawa Scooter Tips

4. Beaches in Karimunjawa

First things first: the beaches in Karimunjawa are pretty pristine. Depending on the currents and time of year, you might find a fair bit of driftwood (branches, coral fragments, etc.) on some of the beaches. Personally, we didn’t mind this at all – in fact, we quite liked it!

During our visit, the beaches weren’t littered but were actually very clean – although we’ve read in other travel accounts that sometimes rubbish does wash ashore. This seems to mostly affect the smaller beaches, which are less frequently cleaned, if at all.

While the beaches on the two main islands (Karimunjawa & Kemujan) are stunning, in our opinion, the real dream beaches – with crystal clear, turquoise-blue waters – are found on the smaller neighbouring islands. On our snorkelling trip (which we’ll tell you more about shortly), we landed on secluded, paradise-like beaches straight out of a picture book.

Tanjung Gelam Beach (= Pantai Ujung Gelam)

This beach at the western tip of the main island of Karimunjawa is considered one of the most beautiful on the island . A small entry fee is charged here, but in return, the beach is regularly cleaned.

Tanjung Gelam Beach is great for swimming. However, it’s most popular at sunset. Because you can watch magnificent sunsets from this beach, Tanjung Gelam Beach is often known as Sunset Beach . There are also a few bars where you can buy drinks.

The beach is quite long – it’s worth walking a bit further. We climbed over some rocks and had a small bay all to ourselves.

Barakuda Beach (= Pantai Barakuda)

Barakuda Beach is located in the east of the island, near Ary’s Lagoon Bungalow & Hotel. During our visit, we were (almost) the only guests there. We opened a fallen coconut with our bare hands and drank the coconut water – Robinson Crusoe vibes at its best!

White Beach (= Pantai Bobi)

White Beach, also known as Pantai Bobi, is also in the east of Karimunjawa , specifically in the southern part, not too far from the main town of the island. A small entry fee is charged here, but in return, White Beach is one of the cleanest on the island.

If you want to experience the sunrise in Karimunjawa: White Beach is perfect for that, as it faces east. You’ll also find a few eateries on the beach where you can buy food and drinks.

Karimunjawa Indonesia

5. Snorkelling in Karimunjawa

Unlike in many other regions of Southeast Asia, the underwater world around the Karimunjawa Archipelago is still relatively intact. So, our tip: Don’t miss a snorkelling trip in Karimunjawa! Not to mention, the small islands around Karimunjawa are paradisiacally beautiful. Snow-white sand & turquoise-blue water – it doesn’t get much better than this!

We booked our snorkelling day trip directly at our accommodation (more on that soon). The trip takes place in small, manageable groups and starts after breakfast. In the morning, there’s plenty of time to explore the underwater world. All the necessary equipment is provided for you. You don’t need to bring anything (unless you want to, of course).

Around midday, the fishing boat heads towards a breathtakingly beautiful, tiny, and secluded island. Here, the crew whips up lunch , which you can savour right under the shade of the palm trees. After lunch, you’ve got some time to yourself on this solitary island – you could go for a swim or just bask in the sunshine. Then, it’s time to head back on the boat.

The cost of the day trip varies depending on the size of your group. We were a party of six and paid 250,000 IDR per person. Don’t forget: wearing a T-shirt will protect you from the harsh sunrays while snorkelling!

6. Our Accommodation Recommendation for Karimunjawa

Accommodation options in Karimunjawa are still quite limited, mostly ranging from simple to slightly more upscale guesthouses. Thankfully, you won’t find any massive hotel complexes here.

Our top pick: Ayu Hotel

We stayed at the stunning Ayu Hotel and wholeheartedly recommend it. The main house, with its lovely design and vast garden, is just the beginning. The rooms and bungalows are beautifully furnished as well.

We had the pleasure of staying in a bungalow with an open-air bathroom – simply marvellous! The entire facility was completely renovated in 2018, making you feel at home from the moment you arrive. This is thanks in no small part to the friendly hosts, Marco and Eryl, who go out of their way to ensure their guests’ comfort. The atmosphere is very family-oriented and personal.

The culinary experience was top-notch: the breakfast , prepared and served by Eryl in the main house, varied daily and was delicious. The dinners were equally exceptional. We also thoroughly enjoyed the snorkelling tour they offered. Our verdict: A clear recommendation with great value for money!

Just a heads-up: Many accommodations in Karimunjawa, including the Ayu Hotel, aren’t located right by the sea. But you can quickly reach the beaches by scooter. Handy to know – the friendly staff will pick you up directly from the pier upon arrival, which is a real plus after a tiring journey.

You can book the hotel here: Ayu Hotel Karimunjawa

Hi! I’m planning on going to Karimunjawa this summer but I am not sure how many days I should spend there. We could arrive there on Tuesday at 1 pm. Do you think that leaving on Saturday will allow us enough time to enjoy it? Thank you

Hi Gjulio, We stayed for 4 nights which was perfectly fine. So 5 nights will be even better. ;) Safe travels! Kathi

We’re planning a trip to Indo in June. How rough is the crossing to the islands? Are the waves big? My girlfriend has a problem with seasickness. Great blog!

Hi there, we were there in June too. Seasickness can indeed be a problem but it always depends on the current weather. Just make sure to bringt along some medications to prevent it and it will be fine! Safe travels! Katharina

It’s pretty cold where I am right now. Although the name of Karimunjawa Island, near to Java, Indonesia doesn’t readily spring to mind, it is certainly a place I’d rather be.

Hi!! I’m currently in Central Java, staying with a host family. They have informed me Karimunjawa is a MUST SEE while I am here. I am curious what airport you flew into/ how you got to Jepara, Indonesia? It looks to me like the closest major airport is Jakarta, but even that is a long journey, to fly there, bus to Jepara, take the ferry to the island and back again. What do you recommend to do if I am going up to N Java specifically to see the island?

excuse me,, you can fly to semarang air port, then go to jepara port with bus/taxy. then you can get ticket from there. hope this help. thanks

How to get to Karimunjawa Islands, Java’s Paradise

Wondering how to get to Karimunjawa Island? This is the blog post for you.

Please note that this blog post most likely contains affiliate links to products or services I use and love! If you click on the links, it means I get a little extra pocket money at no additional cost to you. This is what keeps my website ticking over – thank you!

The main reason to visit Karimunjawa is, essentially, the same reason why most people HAVEN’T visited yet – they don’t know how to get there. But this is why Karimunjawa is SO worth the effort; it remains a rare Indonesian hidden gem amongst a series of far more crowded paradise islands in Southeast Asia. Until recently, there wasn’t much information available in English and although there’s a pretty good tourism set-up in Karimunjawa, it was previously aimed at local tourists.

For more information on what to do on beautiful Karimunjawa and why you should consider it as part of your Java itinerary, see my Karimunjawa guide:

Karimunjawa Guide – Costs, Example Itinerary & Things to Do

If you’re already convinced, here’s how to get to Karimunjawa Island! I have also included information on cross-country transport in Java below so you can decide how you prefer to get to the ferry port.

Table of Contents

How to get to Karimunjawa Island:

Take the ferry between the mainland and karimunjawa.

First things first – to get to Karimunjawa, you will have to get the boat from JEPARA or SEMARANG. Both harbours have a slow and fast boat departing to Karimunjawa.

The general consensus is that the fast boat from Jepara to Karinjawa is the best way. I didn’t speak to anyone on the island who disagreed; firstly, the ‘ Bahari Express ‘ is very efficiently set up, and secondly, 2 hours rocking about on the sea is better than over 4, right?

None of the boats depart everyday so be sure to check the schedule before you go! If you have any problems finding an updated schedule, just email or WhatsApp your accommodation beforehand – they will be used to queries and happy to help assist you on your journey to their beautiful island.

KARIMUNJAWA BOAT SCHEDULE

SLOW BOAT: Jepara to Karimunjawa

10 days in Flores itinerary – Maumere, Ende, Komodos

FERRY COSTS

FAST BOAT (RECOMMENDED): 150K IDR – 2 hours

SLOW BOAT: 50K IDR – 4.5 hours

MAKE YOUR BOAT RIDE MORE COMFORTABLE

My journey was smooth on the way over but choppier on the way back. Thankfully I’d prepared with a relaxing playlist, filled my water bottle and had my eye mask at the ready to try and zone out.

There was a movie playing but it was the usual Dwayne Johnson movie that I’ve seen 47984 times on various boats across SE Asia. (Has anyone else noticed SE Asia ferries ALWAYS play a Dwayne Johnson movie? Like for real?) Take layers too – air con on ferries is known to get chilly.

Alternatively, you can also buy a ‘VIP ticket’ on the fast boat costing an extra 15K IDR. During my journey, the normal ticketing area was quiet (so many free seats, I lay down!) but at a busy time it can get crowded and noisy, so you will find the VIP area a lot more comfortable particularly if you’re prone to seasickness. At a glance, VIP tickets are an extra 20K IDR on the slow boat.

Karimunjawa Guide - Costs, Example Itinerary & Things to Do

HOW TO BOOK YOUR BOAT TICKETS TO KARIMUNJAWA

At the harbour: Most people book their tickets at the harbour before their boat trip without a problem. HOWEVER, It can get booked up on busy periods!

Although my journeys both had plenty of free seats, the FOLLOWING day after I left, the tickets were already booked out in advance! So bear that in mind if you’re on a tight schedule and consider booking your return ticket as soon as you arrive on the island. (I booked the evening before.)

Even during guaranteed quiet periods, still get there 30 minutes before to book your ticket, whereas arriving at the harbour an hour or more before departure is recommended for busy periods.

Online: You can book your tickets online before you go!! The cheapest option I saw was via Happinezz or Satu Dunia tour company from whom you can buy the tickets in advance for just a small extra cost.

A representative will meet you at Jepara harbour to personally pass you your tickets and even wait in the queue for you. It’s good peace of mind if you’re worried and particularly for families.

Book advance ferry tickets here: http://www.karimunjawaboatticket.com/ They can also book the onward journey too (ie, a minivan from Yogyakarta to Jepara).

Flights are available between Surabaya and Karimunjawa. I have not spoken to anyone who used this method since it’s a lot pricier and not aimed at backpackers – there are only TEN TICKETS per flight which must be purchased from the Surabaya office in advance and in person. Flights only go two or three times a week.

YOUR ONWARDS JOURNEY

It is not recommended to stay overnight in Jepara as it is not tourist friendly and there’s not much else there besides the harbour. If you do – perhaps your travelling with young children and don’t want to travel late at night before an 8am ferry – there are a few cheap accommodations available.

GETTING TO KARIMUNJAWA FROM JOGJAKARTA

I found this tiring (since the journey is overnight) but easy to organise. Most Yogyakarta accommodations will simply book transport (a minivan or shared car) on your behalf which will pick you up from your accommodation at 11pm and drive you to arrive at the harbour for around 5am – travel time can vary. They drop you at the harbour’s warung which opens at 4am. Myself and three other girls from the same van took a nap on the benches – thankfully it wasn’t too cold. If you do run into issues booking your transport from Yogyakarta to Jepara/Karimunjawa, you can also book a seat on the minibus through this website: http://www.karimunjawaboatticket.com/

GETTING TO KARIMUNJAWA FROM MALANG, BROMO OR SURABAYA

Once again, you can book a ‘travellers’ minivan from your accommodation on Karimunjawa to pick you up at Jepara harbour after you’ve taken the boat back across – ask your accommodation on Karimunjawa when you arrive. Although there need to be 3 people minimum going in the same direction, good accommodations will contact others to find you a seat if you’re solo.

HIKING IJEN AT SUNRISE – Travel advice for seeing a natural phenomenon – East Java

To Surabaya from Karimunjawa, (on the way to Malang and Bromo) this would cost 200k each. You can also ask your accommodation to help you book straight onto a tour to Bromo, though personally, I found it much cheaper to sort this out when I arrived at my hostel in Malang – Malang is a good access point to Bromo as well as being a base for amazing waterfalls and colourful local villages. I got a local bus from Surabaya to Malang – I booked my ticket directly from Surabaya bus station.

LOCAL BUSES

I used local buses for my route Karimunjawa – Surabaya – Malang. A shared taxi picked me up from Jepara harbour and took me to Semarang bus station, where it was easy to buy a bus ticket to SURABAYA with the assistance of a local. The journey took eight hours; I was squeezed between the locals and was the only tourist! From Surabaya bus station, buying a ticket to Malang was easy. That said, you can also book online in advance if you prefer.

I stayed one night in Surabaya to break the journey up. Buses regularly go throughout the day and leave as soon as they’re full. It’s not always comfortable but certainly an experience I won’t forget. Buy tickets at the bus station.

TRAIN SCHEDULES

Head to 12Go Asia to book onwards train journeys. On a later long-distance trip where I used train transport, I found it to be much much more comfortable than the local bus, albeit still crowded.

Karimun Jawa

Marine Paradise of Java Sea

The Karimun Jawa archipelago, located in the Java Sea, across the capital city of Semarang , has everything to offer for divers and backpackers who enjoy trekking and snorkeling along a gorgeous beach. The Karimunjawa National Park (not to be confused with the Karimun Islands in Bintan, Riau) is one of seven marine national parks in Indonesia. Taking only a four to five-hour trip from Semarang, you will be surrounded by a natural beauty so stunning, you wish you could stay here forever.

karimun jawa

Vibrant Marine Life in the North of Java

The sparkling beaches and pristine seas are home to healthy coral reefs that scatter around an 80 km wide area all the way to the coast of Jepara. Here, you can find two protected marine biota species. Namely, the black coral (Antiphates sp )and organ pipe coral (Tubipora musica). Others include the triton trumpet, the horned helmet, and the pearly-chambered nautilus. There are hawksbill turtles as well as common green turtles too. Above the surface, you can also witness the red-breasted parakeet and other tropical bird species.

karimun jawa

Flights to Semarang are available from Jakarta , Denpasar , and also from other cities. Karimun Jawa itself has an airport in Kemujan Island, called the Dewadaru Airport. Small aircraft land here although the flight schedule is still dominated by chartered flights from Semarang, Yogyakarta, or Bali.

Russia: One Week Itinerary

Russia , the largest country in the world has been on my bucketlist for the longest time. This is where the first ‘women only’ tour of Ticking the Bucketlist is headed. We are off tomorrow and would be spending one week in this enchanting land!

Here is what our ‘one week in Russia’ itinerary looks like….

Day 1: Moscow – Izmailovsky Flea Market and ‘Moscow by Night’

We start our trip from Delhi on an Aeroflot flight and reach Moscow at about 0835 in the morning. We head straight to our hotel to stretch our legs and get some shut-eye. We need to charge our batteries for the Russian sojourn. We are staying in the Best Western Vega at the Izmailovsky area, which is very famous for its local flea market. The  Izmailovsky Market is the best place in Moscow for souvenir shopping …dolls, porcelain, jewelry boxes…we will buy them all from here.

Day 2: Moscow – Moscow City Tour and Kremlin Tour

A red building at the Red Square of the Kremlin

Having seen the city’s light the previous night, it is time to see the city’s colours this morning. We will set off on the Moscow City Tour shows us the highlights of city, starting with the Red Square. This is our day to click a 1000 pictures in front of all the monuments that represent Moscow…St Basil’s Cathedral, the Bolshoi theatre, the Olympic Stadium and the Sparrow Hills.

Exploring the Kremlin

Today is also the day to visit and learn more about the most famous monument in Russia. Kremlin, literally means a fort inside a city. Dynasties built on the site, one century after another and the site came to known as the Kremlin in the 14the century. The walled structure of the Kremlin includes palaces and cathedrals… and a historical past!

Later in the evening, we will enjoy the Russian circus that many of us have seen to television ever so often. Acrobats, clowns and animals….its is time to let the little girl in you come out and clap her hands!

Day 3: Moscow – Metro Stations and Arbat Street followed by the Bolshoi Ballet

Mosaics on the walls of the metro station

Today, we set out to explore the metro stations of Moscow, each of which is a stellar work of art. Stunning frescos and chandeliers in marble surroundings… it’s a work of art! We will then walk along the Arbat street, which is the city’s only pedestrian street, lined with shops and cafes.

As the night unfolds, I intend to don a classy dress and get set to watch one of the finest shows on earth at the Bolshoi Theatre. I have always been awestruck by the art form and would love to see some of the best performers in the world move gracefully. A performance that is rated as one of the best in the world has to be ticked off my bucketlist!

Day 4: Moscow – Day Tour to Sergiev Posad followed by a crazy bar hopping night!

Sergiev Posad is one the strongest spiritual centres in Russia. Home to stunning churches, Sergiev Posad will give us a flavour of the famous ‘Golden Ring’ of Russia. The tour will take 5-7 hours and we will be back at the hotel in second half.

Exploring Sergiev Posad

This will be our last night in Moscow, and we are not going to leave the city without sampling some fine Russian vodka. So, this night is dedicated to bar hopping and pub crawling. Hope to meet some travellers and make new friends.

Day 5: Saint Petersburg – Sapsan train experience to Saint Petersburg and Matryoshka Doll painting class

Saint Petersburg , our next destination, is at least 700 km away from Moscow… and we will zip zap zoom on the Sapsan (the high speed train) to get there in about four hours! The high speed trains are engineering marvels, worth experiencing and we ride this iron horse in the afternoon, reaching St Peterburg in the evening.

As a group, we also join a masterclass to paint our own nested Matryoshka dolls… our own little souvenir to carry and remind us of a fun week in Russia.

With our very own Matryoshka dolls!

Day 6: Saint Petersburg – City Tour and Peterhof Palace

The day starts with a city tour of Saint Petersburg that will give us a peek into what this city has… many bridges, stunning castles, colourful cathedrals and fortresses.

Post lunch, we will head to the Peterhof Palace, also called the Russian Versailles. With spring having set in, the gardens would be green and the fountains will put up a show…I am excited!

Peterhof Palace

Day 7: Saint Petersburg – Hermitage Museum and Shopping

The highlights tour on the previous day will surely make us want to see more of Saint Petersburg…and we will do so by visiting the Hermitage Museum, which is also called the ‘Louvre of Russia’. The Hermitage complex itself is of architectural delight … and the collections have stories to speak which will hopefully, spike our interest enough to make to go back read our history textbooks.

The Hermitage Museum

The rest of the day is totally free to visit any of the other monuments or simply shop … it’s every girl’s favourite sport, isn’t it?

Our last night Russia… Oh Russia!!!! Tonight we will explore the party scene in SPB … or maybe … pack for the next day?

Day 8: Saint Petersburg …Bye Bye Russia

Memories, souvenirs and new friendships… it’s time take them all back to India! We check out of our hotel and take the flight from SPB to Delhi, via Moscow.

Farewell Russia!

Your photos are beautiful! I have always wanted to visit Russia, especially after seeing Anastasia (the Disney movie) 🙂 I can’t believe those mosaics are on the walls at the METRO STATION! How unreal. Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

Wow that is quite an awesome itinerary. I mean… huge Russia in 1 week. I am still dreaming of St. Petersbourg. So many people told me that it is gorgeous. And I would die to see the Ballet

You know I have never considered Russia but this itinerary looks amazing. St. Petersburg looks beautiful. I will certainly consider a trip there now

I’ve only been to St Petersburg so far, and did a few tours in the city and around. But I have a good friend in Moscow, so the incentive is definitely there to go back. I enjoy doing those by night experiences and see how cities transform in different times of day – especially if it’s topped with a circus visit, amazing 🙂

We are thinking of heading to Russia next Summer so will deffo use this itinerary, looks amazing! Would love to visit the Kremlin in Moscow! Thanks for sharing!

I have always been fascinated by Russia. I like the colourful rounds domes on the Palaces just like an Aladin’s Palace. FIFA Football World will be held in Russia next year and I will try my best to visit this beautiful country and will follow your itinerary and contact you. 🙂

Moscow and Kremlin city tour looks amazing. Your one week itinerary is helpful and complete tour of Russian delights. St.Petersburg city tour is also enchanting and splendid. I really want to have Russian vacation now after seeing your pictures

Wow, this is awesome. Well weaved itinerary! We had always dreamed of taking pictures of those onion-domed palaces and those colors on the palaces are just mind blowing. We didn’t know that there is a Versailles in Russia the exterior paint and the colors look much similar. We had loved it in France and would love to visit it in Russia too.

The Peterhof Palace is a delight to visit. Highly recommend it if you are in SPB

I haven’t visited Russia, but it’s definitely on the list! This a great itinerary, I love how you included things to do but also gave some leeway to do things on your own as well (like shopping haha). Beautiful pictures, the buildings and Russian dolls are stunning! I wonder if they’re all hand painted.

The dolls are all hand painted. The cost increases depending on the quality of work and the artist.
