Despite being a developed country, visitors and foreigners should not drink tap water in Russia as the tap water may cause diseases due to improper sanitation. Regular bathing with the water is not a cause for concern but you should use bottled water for drinking and for brushing your teeth. The water can be particularly high risk in St. Petersburg where the pipes are very old. It is also advisable for visitors to not drink unlabeled vodka. Russia is known for its love of vodka, but bootleg vodka can cause serious harm and even death. When Should You Travel to Russia?

The main tourist season in Russia is July and August due to warmer temperatures. This is also the time of “White Nights” in which the sun doesn’t fully set in some areas of the country. The U.S. Embassy Moscow does not advise travel to Russia as the embassy has limited capacity to assist U.S. travelers due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There is currently also a Level 4 travel advisory for the country by the U.S Department of State, advising U.S citizens not to travel to Russia due to ongoing conflict.

Travelers from foreign countries are required to have a visa to travel to Russia. For travelers from outside countries to obtain the required visa for entry into Russia, medical travel insurance is a necessity. The policy is required to last for the traveler’s entire trip to Russia, but there is not a minimum amount needed.

Although there is not a specific dollar amount required to visit Russia, Squaremouth recommends travelers buy a policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage, and at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. Do I need a visa and travel insurance for Russia?

My friend is travelling to meet her partner in Russia via Turkey from the UK in February. This is obviously against govt advice. Due to the evolving nature and complexity of the situation and sanctions in Russia, along with the exclusions within our travel insurance products, Allianz Partners Australia will not be underwriting any new policies or extend current policies for travel to Russia from 28 April 2022.

The Australian Government has currently increased its advice level to ‘Do not travel’ to Russia due to the security environment and military conflict with Ukraine. This situation is evolving and subject to change. Please refer to the  Smartraveller   website for up to date Australian Government advice on Russia.

Policy coverage:

• If you entered into a policy or became eligible after 28 April, 2022, we will not provide any cover for travel to or claims arising within Russia.
• If you have any questions, would like to submit a claim for consideration or require further information please contact us on 1300 725 154.

• If you have not yet departed but have purchased a policy, please call as you may be eligible for a premium refund on 1300 725 154.
• If your pre-booked travel arrangements are cancelled, delayed or rescheduled as a result the situation in Russia and you have a travel insurance policy that provides coverage for delays or cancellation of travel arrangements you may be able to make a claim for cancellation or rearrangement of your journey (whichever is the lesser).  Please refer to your Product Disclosure Statement or Credit Card Complementary Insurance Booklet for the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions that apply .

Making a Claim

Keep all receipts for any additional transport, food or accommodation expenses you incur. If you are claiming cancellation or additional expenses you will need to submit documents showing what your original planned pre-paid arrangements were, along with any receipts and documents showing your new arrangements, and advice from the travel provider indicating the non-refundable portion of the journey.

Where possible, ensure any replacement accommodation and additional expenses are of a similar standard to that which you had planned and pre-paid.

Please note that any compensation and/or refunds you receive from a third party (e.g. airline) for transport, food or accommodation will be deducted if your claim is accepted.
